Mayor meets with Ed Gardner promises to hire Blacks Gardner ‘somewhat optimistic’ but says ball is in mayor’s court By Chinta Strausberg In a meeting with Mayor Rahm Emanuel Tuesday, (October 9) business icon Ed Gardner averted a mass protest on City Hall and emerged from the mayor’s office “somewhat optimistic” that African Americans will be included on construction sites throughout Chicago. Accompanied by his long-time friend and confidante, Carl McFerren, Gardner, who said last Saturday if he had not heard from the mayor he would march on City Hall this week 10,000 strong, told reporters his position is simple. All he wants is jobs for Blacks on city construction sites especially in the African American community, and he made it clear that his fight is far from over. “I want to see Black men and women working on all construction sites throughout the city of Chicago,” said Gardner. He wants half the jobs on these sites to be held by Blacks. At a press conference held outside of the mayor’s City Hall Office, Gardner said he is “somewhat optimistic about his meeting with Emanuel.
ED GARDNER PROMISED to lead a march 10,000-strong on City Hall unless Mayor Rahm Emanuel met with him no later than Wednesday. Gardner addresses a news conference to share insights about that meeting with Emanuel that occurred Tuesday afternoon.
He said the mayor “… seems to show some sign of being concerned about making a change. That is all I’m concerned about that the things are not like they have been for the past many years in the city of Chicago.” Last Saturday when he spoke at a standing-room-only meeting with C.O.A.L. officials at BJ’s Market & Bakery Restaurant at 87th and Stony Island, Gardner said if the mayor didn’t meet with him by Wednesday, he and his supporters would march on City Hall the next day. Today’s meeting averted a protest that could have proven embarrassing to Mayor Emanuel and just days before the Nov. 6th election. “The ball is in the mayor’s court…,” Gardner said. “Chicago can be an example of what changes have to be made to see that Afro Americans get their share of contracts in this city and it certainly can be done,” Gardner said explaining that cities across this nation have similar problems. “Somehow it’s easy for the union people, I guess, to go around, because I don’t think they have an innate desire to not want Blacks to work, but someone has an impediment that is stopping this from happening and I blame the mayor for allowing (Continued on page 3)

PROPOSED BULLETS AND gun tax, if enacted, is expected to help reduce the county’s budget deficit. The cost of a box of 9mm bullets purchased on line ranges from $10 to $11.50.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s bullet and gun tax idea may be a waste of time because most guns used in crimes were purchased illegally, said several Chicago police officers, who asked not to be identified. “Instead of creating such a ridiculous tax why not lobby for stiffer penalties for those caught with illegal firearms and even (Continued on page 2)

Chicago is the host city for education summit By Wendell Hutson Chicago recently played host to a one-day summit in Chicago analyzing public education in America. StudentsFirst, a non-profit organization in Sacramento, Calif. whose focus is reforming public education, brought other education reformers to Chicago last Saturday to discuss ways cities can improve their public schools. Many Black mayors from across the country were in attendance, including Mayor Antonio Blue, Dobbins Heights, N.C; Mayor Sylvester James, Kansas City, MO; Mayor Michael Blunt, Chesilhurst, N.J., and Mayor AC Wharton Jr., Memphis, Tenn. The National Education Policy Summit had several speakers, such as U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (IL D-7th Dist), former NBA star and now mayor of Sacramento, Calf. Kevin Johnson; Tim King, founder and chief executive officer of Urban Prep Academies, a Chicago nonprofit that manages Urban Prep Academy High School; and Roland Martin, former editor of the Chicago Defender. “We need to do more to improve our public schools. One thing we need to address immediately is funding,” Davis told the Crusader. “Not all school districts are funded equally especially those in urban cities like Chicago.” Johnson agreed. “If we are going to have a conversation about how we as a nation can improve our schools then we need to look at how schools are funded,” he said. “But money alone will not fix the problem because there are some schools heavily funded but
whose academic performance is weak.” “Schools are only as good as their leaders. Parents, teachers and principals make up a school’s leadership, not school board members or elected officials,” said Michelle Rhee. “Empowering parents is critical to improving schools because without strong parental input students will still fall short in the classroom.” “I know every mayor would want their schools performing as well as Urban Prep is here in Chicago. But the sad reality is that we, as mayors, need to fix what public schools we do have in our cities and not try to duplicate charter schools,” Mayor James told the Crusader.“The schools in my city and other urban cities are not performing as well as they should because there are internal problems that need fixing. Those internal problems include violence, lack of parental support and not enough resources. “That tells you that money cannot fix this problem,” Rhee said. “Last year this country spent $19 billion rewarding teachers for getting their master’s degree. And even with advance education their students continue to perform below average. At some point, we have to wonder if it is worth paying out so much money to teachers who get advanced degrees but whose students do not benefit from their education.” In Chicago though, teachers will continue to receive pay increases if they earn higher degrees. This component was a major sticking point during recent contract negotiations between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools,
according to Karen Lewis, president of the CTU. Chicago Urban League President and Chief Executive Officer Andrea Zopp, also attended the summit. Zopp, who is also one of two Black members of the Chicago School Board, praised the school board for its accomplishments thus far this year. “Other cities may want to look at the things we were able to achieve with this latest contract with Chicago Teachers Union. Teachers will now be evaluated (in part) by the performance of their students,” explained Zopp. “And now when layoffs occur it will be based on a teacher’s performance and not seniority.” She added that principals would also be held more accountable for their schools since they now have full power to hire teachers.
CHICAGO WAS THE HOST to a one-day educational summit which revolved around the theme how to improve schools. The summit attracted Black mayors and education reformers from across the country.
Proposed gun tax a waste of time (Continued from page 1) stronger penalties for those who discharge one,” said one 18-year veteran police officer. “I realize she is trying to come up with new ways to address gun violence but this is not the way to go.” At Crusader press time, no Black county commissioner would comment about the proposal. However, Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, had plenty to say. “What’s causing the violent crime in Chicago are the drug dealers, the gangs, and if you are going to put a tax on something,
why don’t you start taxing the gangs or the drug dealers,” Pearson said. “They are just making law-abiding citizens pay for something that they didn’t do. That’s all this is going to do, and drive business out of Cook County, of course.” At an informal meeting with reporters Wednesday, Preckwinkle tried explaining her proposal. She said it’s unclear how much she would charge for each bullet and gun purchased but planned on using revenue generated from the tax to aid victims of gun violence. On Oct. 18, Preckwinkle will present her 2013 budget proposal to county commissioners.
The county faces a $115 million deficit next year. “Gun violence is a real problem for us. It’s a problem for us in our criminal justice system, and it’s a problem for us in our health care system, and I make no apologies for the proposal,” she said. And her Chief of Staff Kurt Summner, added that the cost to county taxpayers when someone (without medical insurance) is staggering. He said it cost about $52,000 to treat a gunshot victim at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, the county’s only hospital with a trauma unit. And it cost $143 a day to house a person at Cook County Jail.
Preckwinkle’s proposed guns and ammo tax gets booed (Continued from page 1) Preckwinkle, in her first term, said the tax revenue will help balance the budget and provide monetary relief to the county, which treats uninsured gunshot victims at emergency rooms. She added the tax would also help pay salaries for law enforcement and court personnel that deal with gun crimes. Gun shop owners, Second Amendment advocates and social shooters said the bullet tax will not stop those who are committing crimes from doing so and believe that putting a tax on ammunition and guns will only drive legal gun consumers to other counties or across the state line to Indiana to make purchases. “Cook County will end up losing revenue because folks who can go outside the county to make their purchases will do so, and it also just penalizes the people in Chicago and Cook County who need their firearms and ammunition the most to protect
themselves in their homes and don’t have the funds to take on an added tax,” said Valinda Rowe, spokesperson for Illinoiscarry.com, a website dedicated to advancing right-to-carry legislation in the state. “So you are punishing those who need it the most and can afford it the least.” Rowe compared the proposed tax by Preckwinkle to another idea city leaders tried a few years back when they denied Walmart stores to be built within city limits. Rowe said residents merely went to suburban Walmart stores and shopped and Chicago lost millions in tax dollars. She sees the same thing happening if Preckwinkle gets her wish with this tax. Gun shop owners said if the tax is passed and they see it starting to affect their bottom line, they would consider packing up shop and moving their stores to other counties in the state. Don Mastrianni, who owns Illinois Gun Works LTD in Elmwood
Park said, adding that a good deal of his business comes from Chicago residents who live a block away from his business at 7229 W. Grand Ave. He said his business is well established and he would not leave if a tax was implemented, but he said other smaller shops might be forced to close. “I’m still miffed at why Chicago area politicians are targeting legal gun owners and legitimate businesses,” Mastrianni said. “The people they would tax are not out here committing crimes. We don’t sell ammo or guns to people without a valid FOID card. Gangbangers don’t come into my shop and ask me for a box of 9mm rounds because they know for one they can’t buy them and two they might get arrested on the spot,” said Mastrianni, a retired trucker. Larry Pelcher, a retired Lansing police officer and owner of Pelcher’s Gun Shop and Shooting Supply in the South Suburbs, said a new tax could mean many of his

customers would drive five minutes away to a shop in Hammond, Indiana and buy. He is concerned about that and thinks Preckwinkle has good intentions but is not seeing the big picture. “It’s a supply and demand business and people need ammunition for hunting, competition shooting and yes home defense,” Pelcher said. “Placing a tax on the products will not decrease the problem one bit, but it will hurt businesses and law-abiding citizens. And if the businesses are forced to close or leave the area, the county would lose on the tax revenue that the business generates, so I really don’t understand where she is coming from.” Pelcher and Mastrianni said a large portion of their business comes from ammunition purchases because for most people, buying a gun is a one-time purchase. Mastrianni also has a gun range in his shop that adds to his revenue and Pelcher is considering building
one. Tanya Gold, a Chicago resident, said she is not in favor of a tax but depending on how much it is, it would not stop her from purchasing in Cook County. Gold said she disagrees with Preckwinkle’s suggestion that a tax will somewhat lower crime because criminals do not follow laws to begin with. “The people doing all the shooting don’t have valid gun owner cards in the state anyway and usually get their guns and ammunition in illegal ways to begin with,” Gold said. “So I would have preferred if Preckwinkle had just come out and said ‘we need the money.’ I would still purchase from the gun shop I go to because I like the people there.” Preckwinkle is unfazed by the criticism she is getting. She said something must be done to stem the tide of violence that is sweeping the county not just in Chicago, but in south suburban Harvey and west suburban May- wood. The Chicago Crusader

Mayor meets with Ed Gardner promises to hire Blacks “somehow those journeymen who somehow the unions send out are not African American. They can certainly bid cheaper preventing Afro American contractors from fairly getting their fair share of business.” Two-weeks ago, Gardner held a jobs protest in Evergreen Park
where more than 2,000 people joined him in support; however, Mayor James Sexton has been working with Gardner and the two major developers of the 92nd to 95th and Western construction site, Meijer’s and Menards, to get as many Blacks hired as possible.
WBBM RADIO REPORTER Craig Dellimore interviews Ed Gardner following the news conference in which Gardner said he did meet with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the mayor promised to increase the number of Black workers on city construction jobs. (Continued from page 1) it to continue.” Gardner blamed the mayor for not working with the aldermen and his staff to prevent this lack of Blacks on the construction sites. “I am not going to stop at 87 years old until it is corrected,” he vowed. Mayor Emanuel told Gardner that the Red Line construction work is very important to him and that “many African Americans will be working on that project.” Gardner said the mayor “will be dealing with the union folks right away, but they know all of the answers. They know what they are doing and what they are not doing. “They know when I see a site with nothing but non-Blacks in the middle of a Black community that they sent the journeyman out to do this job. They know what they did. It’s nothing new,” said Gardner. He vowed to continue his direct action against job sites that have no Black workers but added, “Right now, the ball is in the camp of the mayor and the organization of Coalition of African American Leaders C.O.A.L., who will be meeting with his people on the Red Line and also on future construction sites throughout the city of Chicago.” Asked if he is going to shut down more job sites, Gardner made it clear. “Our job is not to shut down sites. Our job is to try to make life better for particularly African Americans. “If that is the next stage that we have to take, we will take it. We will give the mayor a chance to move forward and showing me
by actions, not by words, not by what he says he’s doing.” While Gardner said the mayor did not know why there is a scarcity of Blacks on construction sites, he says the evidence is crystal clear. “I walk the streets of Chicago. I will see if Black men and women are working,” said Gardner. Mayor Emanuel said he would be meeting with CTA Chairman Terry Peterson and members from the Coalition of African American Leaders (C.O.A.L.), which is headed by Clarence Wood. Referring to C.O.A.L., Gardner said this organization has promised him they will see that Blacks will get “an improved share of jobs throughout the city of Chicago.” “They have accepted the mayor’s challenge to see that more Blacks bid on contracts, more Blacks have a fair share of getting those contracts” in a manner that would be smoother and a more friendly process than in the past. “They know that I know that I am not satisfied with the history of how Blacks have been eliminated from construction sites in the city of Chicago. It must be corrected,” Gardner told reporters. Gardner told Mayor Emanuel, “As far as I am concerned, he is totally and finally responsible to see that this situation is corrected, and he promised me he would do as much as he possibly can to correct it. Time will tell.” When told by reporters that elected officials have to live within the law and how could they achieve what he wants and live within the law, Gardner said, “…there are laws, but they are

human beings.” Gardner said he told the mayor, “Look, I put my life on the line in 1943 for this country. They didn’t ask me if I lived East of Western or North of Western, whether I was Black or white. I served my nation. “I come back here and I see a thing 70-years later worst than what it was when I was struggling to be an American citizen trying to help this nation.” Gardner said no matter what the laws are, it is the mayor’s responsibility to change that, which is preventing Blacks from working on these construction sites. “If they are preventing Black African Americans from getting their fair share of job opportunity, that is his responsibility to see that it’s changed.” Asked if Mayor Emanuel committed to a percentage of jobs for Blacks, Gardner said he wants half of those working on city construction sites to be African Americans. Gardner said he is not against other ethnic groups working “but not at the expense of Black families who can’t feed their children, young Black men escaping into drugs and narcotics…no jobs and drug business very, very high and that should stop.” Gardner told Mayor Emanuel that he holds him “personally responsible to bring about changes” and doesn’t see why unions can’t hire African American journeymen on city construction sites. Having personally looked at several construction sites in Black communities, Gardner said many times Black contractors bid on jobs but are “bypassed” and Saturday, October 13, 2012

EDITORIAL THE SHRINKING BLACK MIDDLE CLASS An article, American Austerity, appeared in the Sunday, October 7 edition of the Chicago Tribune that highlighted the plight of a shrinking Black middle class. The article, written by Tribune reporter Dawn Turner Trice starts off with a quote: “Every generation wants the next to move up at least one more rung on the ladder, not backward-Never Backward.” The article tells the plight of several Black middle class families that have been impacted by the economic downturn in the United States. For example, one woman, a divorced nurse administrator, sold her home in Matteson, Illinois in order to ensure that her children will be able to afford college tuition when the time comes. Others are struggling to keep their homes. Many are vexed by the notion that costs for college are moving far beyond the reach of middle class families. When looking at the figures, African Americans are the group most impacted by the foundering economy. The unemployment rate has remained high while income has dropped dramatically. Many of those most affected are individuals without college degrees who made their way into the middle class via public sector and union jobs, but the public sector has lost about 600,000 positions since 2008. Changes in manufacturing have also contributed to this dismal scenario. Of course, the shrinking Black middle class is a big story. Yet, it is a subset of what’s happening all across the country, and by some accounts, the world. Because of economic policies created by the monied class, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. It’s ironic that in the same newspaper, the real estate section listed many homes for sale for more than a million dollars. Someone is able to afford them, or they wouldn’t be available. There were very few properties that an average middle class family could afford, and there were NO low income properties listed. A question remains: why is it that out of all of the groups affected by a poor economy, Blacks are at the bottom? In terms of median household income, Blacks fall behind Whites, Hispanics and Others! For example, the percentage change in income from June 2009 to June 2012 was -5.2% for Whites, 4.1% for Hispanics, -3.6% for Others, and -11.1% for Blacks! In spite of this, the Black community is projected to wield over $1 trillion dollars in buying power within the next two years, more than some countries. So why are we in such bad shape? Could it be our priorities? Could it be that we do not engage in wealth-producing behaviors? Could it be that our children are being lured by get-rich quick schemes like rapping and selling drugs rather than focusing on enhancing skills so that they can qualify for higher paying jobs? Contrary to what many may think, the answers to these questions are not limited to racism alone, as evidenced by those in the Hispanic community who also face discrimination. Then what is it? These questions must be answered if we are to climb out of the economic doldrums. One final note - No one in the current presidential race is talking about the plight of the very poor. In one sense, this is rather frightening; it is as though they have totally been disregarded and, of course, the Black poor, once again, are at the very bottom of this barrel. In truth, no one is going to save the Black community but Black people, and we’re going to have to find a way to do this soon. We can’t wait for the government or anyone else to ensure our survival, and it will involve changing some long-entrenched behaviors in order to succeed. A luta continua.
So often we hear about Black leaders. Usually they are men of high visibility and a track record of involvement. They generally are folks who are eloquent, or at least like we tend to say “well-spoken.” Unfortunately, many of these “leaders” are self-proclaimed and their skills are egos rather than any particular skills set, oratorical or otherwise. But if people want to see a real, unquestionable and humble leader in our community, they only need to look to Ed Gardner. My guess is most Black people in Chicago know Gardner has been getting a lot of news coverage based on protests he’s led at construction sites on the Southwest side. Gardner became outraged and decided to do something about the lack of Black workers at those construction sites. It was primarily Hispanic employees doing the masonry work. Gardener’s quiet but forceful demeanor caused thousands of people of all ages, some infirm to join Gardner at the last protest a couple of Sundays ago. Gardner, who is 87 years old, never called a news conference to say what he wanted to do about the lack of Black workers, he just started protesting. By the second protest, thousands of Chicagoans and neighbors

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Ed Gardner is a sterling example for all ages Dear Editor:
joined the founder of Soft Sheen, to walk along 95th Street and Western. These protests and the constant news coverage were enough to get the mayors of Evergreen Park and Chicago to agree to meet with Gardner and discuss the construction situation for potential Black workers. This is a huge test for Emanuel because like President Barack Obama many Black Chicagoans don’t believe the mayor has done, much if anything for the Black community. Gardner, because he has impeccable credentials and a huge amount of business success cannot be dismissed or taken lightly, he simply is a man people understand is not operating out of self-interest, but a strong belief that Black folks are getting the short end of the construction work stick. The issue that no one seems to be discussing is whether there is a legal way to add Black employees to public sector jobs and exclude other minorities and women. I wanted to believe that the Black members of the city council would step forward with a solution to that dilemma. So far though, the Black alderman haven’t even given good lip service. It looks like the only resolution will come from the mayor-the same guy who won every Black ward without visiting half of them during the election. Every positive that comes from the Gardner-generated protest should be solely credited to him. He has proven that he is indeed a leader – not just a Black leader, but
a leader generally. And if Black construction workers do not gain new jobs from the protest, those negatives belong to the Black members of the Chicago City Council. With four attorneys in their ranks the Black aldermen, who undoubtedly see the same thing that raised Gardner’s ire and did nothing, proves what they do best is sleep on the job. BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Minority Business Development Agency – Fading Away? By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist The Minority Business Development Agency is a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It was started during the Richard Nixon Administration. President Nixon gave a lot of attention to minority affairs. Along with this, he allowed Dr. Arthur A. Fletcher to implement Affirmative Action. The President was proud of this new agency and adequately funded it. The MBDA had regional offices throughout the nation and issued grants to dozens of consulting groups to provide technical assistance to minority businesses. They would assist in financial packaging, procurement, business planning and networking. In the beginning most of these grantees were Black owned firms. They were very aggressive and popular throughout the Black business network. Things started going in reverse during the Reagan Administration. The funding was cut by two thirds. The MBDA started downsizing to the point of irrelevancy. It was during the George Herbert Bush administration that a study was commissioned to find out what changes could be made to
Harry C. Alford reinvigorate the MBDA. My friend and minority business advocate, Joshua Smith, was appointed president of the commission. They held meetings around the nation taking valuable testimony from businesses and government officials. I remember going to Chicago to give my testimony. The final report was comprehensive and encouraged the government to transfer the 8a minority business program from the Small Business Administration to the MBDA. Joshua felt there would be better service if the MBDA could manage the 8a program and receive their ample funding.
We all awaited the President’s response and looked forward to the upcoming changes. It never came! President Bush refused to read it. However, the SBA read it and became enraged. They sought revenge. Joshua Smith’s main company was in the 8a program. The SBA kicked his company out of the program overnight and caused severe financial harm to this thriving Black owned firm. This was a very disgusting moment in Black business history. The 8a program stayed with the SBA and has been withering on the “vine” ever since. A new chance of hope came when William J. Clinton was inaugurated. He appointed the great Ron Brown as Secretary of Commerce. Ron was a legend in political leadership and entrepreneurship. He knew how to play the “game” and never forgot where he came from – Harlem, NY. He pledged to get the funding back into MBDA and technical support would rise to a new level. However, our hopes were dashed when he died in that infamous and mysterious airplane crash over Europe. With his unexpected departure went any hope of renewing the budget levels. There would never be afterwards a Secretary who would be as committed to making the
MBDA, once again, effective. I read the federal manual covering the Department of Commerce and viewed the entire mission and commitment of the MBDA. In the explanation it stated that the MDBA offices and grantees (Minority Business Development Centers) would work actively with minority chambers of commerce. This was 1994 and we had just set up our national office in Washington, DC. I got excited and wrote Courtney Cox, the Director of the MBDA at that time. There was no response. Soon I learned that the language regarding working with minority chambers of commerce had been taken out. Wow, as soon as we get a national network of Black chambers they renege on their commitment. Now we are at the beginning of the George W. Bush administration. The Clinton Administration never increased the budget of MBDA and my hopes during the new administration would be just to hold on to what we have. Things didn’t get better at the MBDA but we did maintain the budget. The above proved to be rocky times but the Obama Administration would become the worst in history. The budget has not
been increased but slashed even more to the point of being dysfunctional. The regional offices are being cut in half. The grantees (Minority Business Development Centers) are far and in between with most of them not being Black nor targeted to Black owned businesses. The procurement dollars and financing they report are suspect at best as there is no auditing documentation to support their claims. The final insult is there will be no more Annual Med Week events. For 29 years there would be a big networking event of minority firms and the MBDA plus the SBA. The 30th Anniversary will not be. As opposed to a week of events in September, they are having a day and a half in December and the SBA will not be attending. It is just a token of what this large event used to be. Last year they had 57 sponsors. This year there will be only 19. The operation is a mere shadow of the agency once touted by Presidents. Conservatives Conspire to Do a Job on Latest Jobs Report By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The birther issue – the preposterous idea that President Obama was not born in the United States – was finally put to rest, but that has not prevented conservative conspiracy buffs from seeing a plot behind the falling unemployment numbers. Conservatives, led by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have been pounding Obama for maintaining an unemployment rate above 8 percent. They cited federal Bureau of Labor statistics to support their claim. Yet, when that same source placed the August number at 7.8 percent, they are trying to persuade the public that it is all part of a liberal conspiracy to re-elect Obama. Led by the conservative Fox News network, the conspiracy about the conspiracy began long before the release of the latest numbers. Fox’s Sean Hannity said on May 12, “the vetting of Obama has begun, his economic record, his debt, his unemployment numbers which they are fudging, I don’t think are honest…” Two months earlier, Fox’s Eric Bolling said: “Four million peoThe Chicago Crusader
ple have left the workforce. If you add that 4 million people – under President Obama – if you add those 4 million back in, the same amount of jobs, the same number of jobs divided right now among people in the workforce would show about a 12 percent unemployment rate. “So, are they playing around with the numbers? Look, it’s the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s supposed to be non-partisan, but that’s the Department of Labor, Hilda Solis heads the Department of Labor. Hilda Solis works directly for Obama.” When Bolling was asked, “Are you saying they’re cooking the books?” he replied, “I’m saying, there’s room for error. There’s room. But when you’re talking about four million people, how do you know?” If there’s room for error, Bolling is in that room. As economist Justin Wolfers told Salon: “First, if you know and understand the BLS and its structure – its statutory structure and its employment structure – you understand this simply isn’t how things happen. The BLS is independent of the Department of Labor. If you go to the BLS website, you won’t even find a picture of the Secretary of
George E. Curry Labor there. It’s completely firewalled. “The one exception to this would be the Commissioner of the BLS. The president appoints a BLS commissioner, but for most of this administration it’s been a Republican [my emphasis]. When his term ran out, Congress refused to confirm Obama’s appointee. So the current commissioner is, in fact, a career guy from within BLS, and if you know the institution at all, the BLS is an institution of nerds, by nerds. “So you could even argue that Republicans have protected the BLS from political influence by refusing
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
to confirm an Obama appointee?” Joe Nocera, a New York Times business columnist, observed: “It is completely implausible to me that they would actively rig the thing to help Obama. The guys are green eye-shaded career bureaucrats who have no particular vested interest one way or another in who wins the presidential election. “[The numbers] come out of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, if you are going to cook them, how exactly would you go about it, it is pretty implausible that the career bureaucrats at the Bureau would cook the books for Obama. Everybody likes a conspiracy theory, but it is hard to understand how they would do it.” There’s a reason fewer people are seeking jobs under Obama – and it’s not because of a conspiracy. The Washington Post’s economic blog Wonkblog explained it this way: “…Since 2000, the labor force rate has been steadily declining as the baby-boom generation has been retiring. Because of this, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago expects the labor force participation rate to be lower in 2020 than it is today, regardless of how well the economy does.” But conspiracy buffs don’t let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory. Saturday, October 13, 2012
Former General Electric CEO Jack Welch, a Republican, has joined the conspiracy camp. After the latest job report, he tweeted, “Unbelievable jobs numbers… these Chicago guys will do anything…can’t debate so change numbers.” Under attack for his unsubstantiated assertion, Welch tried to defend his comment by saying he should have used a question mark rather than a comma at the end of his sentence, as if that would have made a difference. If there were a conspiracy, it failed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that they had understated official U.S. employment over the previous two months. If they were plotting to help President Obama, they did a poor job. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
THE MAROON WITHIN US (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill Our late, great ancestor, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard’s book, The Maroon Within Us, once again reminds us of a major problem that we, as African people in America, are besieged by. Dr. Hilliard described this problem as cultural surrender. In explaining the problem, Dr. Hill-
iard wrote, “African Americans remain one of the very few groups in the United States who do not honor their own cultural traditions, sometimes even when they are honored by others.” Continuing on this point, Dr. Hilliard states that, “If there is a major illness among African American people it is that we unceasingly honor and utilize our culture less. All great nations and people do the opposite.” As Dr. Hilliard further explains, “Cultural surrender is more than a matter of rejecting one’s father and mother culture. It means that one accepts a new definition as a person. The culturally dependent person is a mere spectator, a receptacle for the creativities of others. To demand freedom from slavery only to use that freedom to commit one’s self to a voluntary cultural servitude is to lose the chance to be human.” The erosion of many of our African cultural traditions and foundations are most evidenced in our family and community life. Far too many African people in America are getting away from the essence of family life. The cultural tradition of African family life is that of the extended family that centers itself on the rearing of children and caring for the elders.
Family life is the basis for which a people maintain their cultural traditions, traditions that are important to the survival of a people. The way we raise our children in the context of extended family life for African people was always connected to the overall development of the larger community. Dr. Hilliard writes“There have always been Africans or Black people in America who have been both physically and mentally free. We have also had far too many of those who have yielded their bodies— and worse, their souls— to people and systems whose purpose was to exploit to take all and give nothing.” It is in this context that Dr. Hilliard provides several reasons why this devastating trend of cultural surrender is taking place. He says, “…we have tended to accept certain false dichotomies,” such as the following: “1. We have tended to equate sophisticated technology with culture, believing that such technology is exclusively European and that to affirm African culture is to reject technology. 2. We have tended to equate modern with technology, and to value modern as if it were cultural progress. At the same time, we have
seen the affirmation of African/African American culture as a matter of retrogression. Further, we have seen African/African American culture as static rather than dynamic and adaptive. 3. We have tended to equate European culture with wealth and African/African American culture with poverty. 4. We have tended to associate education with the acquisition of all the cultural forms of Europeans, and find it hard to conceive of educated persons who live the African/African American culture. 5. We have tended to equate self-affirmation with the hatred of others. 6. We have tended to equate religion with particular forms of European interpretations of Christianity and have not seen our people as religious or spiritual. 7. Generally we have failed to study ourselves and to know our culture.” The challenges that African people face in America, and throughout the world, as we enter the twenty-first-century is to create programs, strategies, and institutions that will reclaim and preserve our rich culture. One such program that has emerged as one approach to preserving our culture and traditions
aimed at our youth is the growing Rites of Passage Movement. This Movement seeks to place African and African American people at the center of independently working with our young people. Children in Rites of Passage Programs are generally taught aspects of our history that included our literary accomplishments, our accomplishments in music, science and technology, and the spiritual concepts of African people that direct our moral and ethical behavior and treatment of others. As we look out and observe the African World Community, we can see a common set of problems that all African people face, as a result of hundred of years of exploitation by Europeans and others against African people. This exploitation has developed into a worldwide system of white supremacy and white domination aimed at wiping out African culture. We must resist and refuse any efforts to wipe out our culture. Finally, Dr. Hilliard writes, “Cultural surrender or cultural destruction leads inevitably to the loss of any possibility for a group to mobilize on its behalf. There can be no African/African American family in the absence of a cultural base.”
PERFORMANCE OR POLICY: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “WIN” A DEBATE By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist
asked. Too often, Romney ignored the President’s questions about specifics, trading bluster for facts and getting away with it. Jim Lehrer totally lost control of the debate, failing to push either participant on specifics. He was not even effective as a timekeeper, letting both debate participants run over time, although he decreed time lines. President Obama really needs to toot his own horn. When Romney says, “you have been President for four years,” our President needs to respond with his list of accomplishments, many of which blunted the effects of the Great Recession, which he inherited from George Bush. The intervention in the auto industry that Romney opposed has made a real difference in states like Ohio and Michigan. A research paper that was reviewed at the Rainbow/PUSH automotive summit found that for every 2,000 jobs created in automobile manufacturing in an urban area, another 5,200 jobs were created. While there are not enough jobs to go around yet, there are more jobs than there would have been had the economy been allowed to drift. The question about who won the
Somehow, the body snatchers came last Wednesday and took the fire (as in fired up, ready to go) out of President Obama, leaving a rather listless shell of a man who never truly engaged the audience. He looked down at his notes, fidgeted, and let his opponent, Mitt Romney, get away with multiple lies. The body snatchers were busy Wednesday; they also took Mitt Romney, the greedy venture capitalist who likes to fire people, and turned him into a facsimile of a human being. Of course, with Romney’s disrespect for both President Obama (interrupting him several times) and moderator Jim Lehrer (who he simply ignored), the faux human being turned out to be one that was rude, arrogant, overbearing, and clearly rehearsed. Romney threw out a line that he had five boys, thus he was used to hearing the same thing said over and over as if it were the truth. President Obama could not ask Romney who taught the little liars, but that’s what went through my mind. Before the debate was over, it was
not his own facts, and again, I might have said something snarly to the faux human being along the
lines of you’ve got your own billions, your own SuperPACs, but you can’t buy your own facts. While President Obama does not want to be as sarcastic as I usually am, he surely could have given Romney a better run for his money. Still, anybody who can do arithmetic knows that Romney has a penchant for mathematical fiction. How can you cut the taxes on the wealthy (which is done if the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire), cut tax rates by 20 percent, and end up with a revenue-neutral solution? He says by cutting spending, and he cites Public Broadcasting as one of the cuts he would make. Public Broadcasting represents less than one-thousandth of one percent of the entire federal budget, so cutting it won’t make much difference to the deficits he is quick to rail on. President Obama was right to push Romney on specifics to some of the plans he said he had. There were no specifics, just the frequent exhortation that “I have a plan to deal with that.” What plan? Voters can’t judge unless we know, but Romney behaves like a student who hasn’t started on a term paper and fumbles about its contents when

clear that Romney behaved in just the way he said his sons did, repeating lies about taxes, Medicare, and employment several times, as if there was any truth to them. He had another line, where he said President Obama was entitled to his own house and his own plane, but

debates turns out to be a question of policy versus performance. Too many pundits talked about Mitt Romney’s “performance” indicating that he performed well. The United States in not a stage looking for a leading actor, it’s a nation, looking for a leader who can make a difference. We are not looking for a contender who thinks that bluster means leadership. We are looking for a leader to finish the work he started. Those who were mesmerized by the body snatcher’s version of Mitt Romney fail to understand that a listless Obama is ten times better than an arrogant and overbearing Romney. It’s not over ‘til it’s over. There are two more debates, and many of the undecided will be swayed by these debates. Others will make their minds up as they walk into the voting booth. In the next debate, President Obama must be a stronger advocate of the policies he has embraced, and we who watch must not be fooled by a glitzy performance that is devoid of truth or substance. The more I think about how our President has had to distance himself from US the madder I get when dese other folks disrespect him in every way and he can’t call it what it is. Well, Ima can call it for what it is, pur ‘d RACISM. If President Obama was not 50% Black he would not have been subjected to this crazy birther stuff, he would not have been disrespected at his first State of the Union address be-
Ima was just as disappointed as most Obama supporters last week after the first presidential debate. Ima wanted to see President Obama kick Romney’s you know what, but obviously the President’s white handlers must have told him not to look like an angry Black man? So, the result was a less than desirable Barack Obama. I say to President Obammy stop listening to dem white men and listen to Michelle (a

BUSINESS CBC members oppose legislation aimed at minorities, unbanked consumers Measure would undermine CFPB enforcement and preempt state laws By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist At the urging of veteran Michigan Congressman John H. Conyers, a growing number of Congressional Black Caucus colleagues are actively opposing a bill that would negatively impact consumers of color and others who lack a personal bank account. Moreover, the bill, HR 6139 would also remove the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) from its current enforcement authority over nonbank lenders and additionally preempt state laws enacted to protect consumers. Joining Cong. Conyers in vocal opposition are Members of Congress representing minority-majority districts. In a September 14 letter to the full House, Conyers, along with Representatives Hansen Clarke (Detroit), Elijah Cummings (Baltimore), Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC), Barbara Lee, (Oakland), Charles Rangel (New York City) and Bobby Rush (Chicago) spoke directly to the effort to establish a
Charlene Crowell two-tiered financial regulatory system. “HR 6139 claims to help minorities, when in fact it would hurt them disproportionately by enabling predatory lending. Far from helping these communities stay in the mainstream banking system, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency charter would push them further into the economic margins. HR 1639 would preempt anti-
predatory lending laws in 17 states and District of Columbia while also circumventing CFPB oversight of non-bank creditors. Additional concerns regarding HR 6139 include: Carve-outs for the same lenders the Department of Defense found harmful to military families. After a 2006 Department of Defense report that found predatory lending practices targeted military members and their families, a bipartisan effort led to the enactment of the Military Lending Act of 2007. This law covered payday, car title and refund anticipation loans and also put an end to interest rates that ran as high as 800 percent. Interest rates on these loans were capped at 36 percent. Roll backs more than 40 years of consumer protections under the Truth in Lending Act (TILA). By exempting lenders from annual percentage rate (APR) disclosure, loans of one year or less could disclose the cost of these loans as a dollar amount rather than an APR that TILA now requires. Without an APR,
disclosure on these loans, consumers would be less likely to make a baseline cost of credit comparisons with other financial products. Additionally the Center for Responsible Lending research and analysis has found that: 1. Twelve million Americans are trapped every year in a payday loan debt cycle and generate $4.2 billion in predatory fees every year. 2. States that ban payday lending save their citizens an estimated $1.4 billion in predatory lending fees each year. 3. 76 percent of payday loans are the result of repeat borrowing on the same principal. 4. From 2008-2010, voters in three states have said ‘NO’ to triple digit interest rates when their state legislatures did not: Arizona, Montana and Ohio.
forcement. Already, more than five million consumers have turned to the CFPB for information, assistance and advice. Better than one-in-four consumers filing a complaint with CFPB have received monetary compensation. When Capitol Hill lawmakers return for the lame duck session that follows the November election, HR 6139 and other nonregulatory measures could reach a House floor vote. “Economic justice and financial freedom for all American households must remain priorities for Congress and financial service regulators alike,” said the CBC members. “We urge you to oppose HR 6139 and allow the CFPB to continue its work of facilitating a transparent and safe financial marketplace for all households.
Considering the economic chaos caused by the worst economy since that of the 1930s Great Depression, many lawmakers and consumers have called for more vigorous monitoring and en-

City Of Chicago announces new hiring preference focusing on high school grads The City of Chicago announced that it is implementing a new job application preference for City positions for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high school graduates in an effort to encourage students to stay in school and graduate. This is the first hiring preference for City of Chicago positions that is targeted for CPS students. “This new hiring preference encourages our students to stay in school and get their diploma so they are prepared for college and a career,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “From cradle to career, expanding access to pre-k programs, achieving increased time in the classroom with our teachers, and implementing our College to Careers program at the City Colleges, we are committed to helping our students succeed every step of the way.” With this new hiring preference, the City’s Department of Human Resources (DHR) will ensure that a minimum of 20 percent of the candidates referred for a position that has the CPS hiring consideration are CPS graduates. CPS
graduates will be able to provide either their diploma or transcript as proof of CPS graduation when applying. CPS keeps transcript records dating back 50 years, and transcripts may be requested atwww.cps.edu – the first request is free of charge. An example of the kind of City position that would be open for this new CPS high school graduate preference is the new position established at the City’s Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) thanks to a groundbreaking agreement with Laborers 1001 announced in May 2012. The new hybrid position, titled “General Laborer,” involves training to work on a variety of tasks that require different skills, including tree trimming, graffiti removal, sanitation removal, and hand labor work. “This is an important step as it not only encourages our students to stay in school and get their degrees, but also helps fill the gap between skilled employees we need with students we know have received a quality education in our public schools," said Soo Choi, Com-

Over the past five years, the CPS high school graduation rate has increased, with the 20112012 school year projected to see the highest recorded graduation rate for the District at 60.6 percent. “CPS students are making real progress, thanks to the hard work being done in classrooms across the city, but there is still
much more to do” said CPS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard. “The new full school day and year provide additional tools and resources for teachers and principals to support our students. We are encouraged by this step taken by the City to encourage our students to strive each day and work towards their diploma.”

MWRD staff help improve CPS students’ reading skills Participation in Working in the School program enters 10th year For the past nine years, staff from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) have descended upon Peabody School, 1444 West Augusta, Chicago, to read, provide one-on-one tutoring and mentor second and third grade students for an hour every Wednesday. The 10th year is now underway, and about two dozen MWRD staff have once again volunteered to forego their lunch breaks to help out students in need.
The Working in the School (WITS) Power Lunch Program promotes literacy and receives strong support from the MWRD Board of Commissioners. “We feel that this is a very worthwhile endeavor,” said Commissioner Cynthia M. Santos, Chairman of the Committee on Pension, Human Resources and Civil Service. “Our staff have a very positive experience, they build strong relationships with their students, and they enjoy watching the progression of improvement in the students’ reading abilities.” The WITS bus picks up volunteers at the MWRD’s main office
complex in downtown Chicago on Wednesdays, takes them to the school, and returns them to the office by 1 p.m. Two District employees are assigned to one student; the staff member rotates every other week. “The MWRD volunteers are an invaluable resource to the students of Peabody Elementary,” said Morgan O’Neil, WITS organizer. “The one-on-one reading support they provide cannot be duplicated in the classroom where the ratio of students to teachers is sometimes 30 to one.” More information about the WITS program can be found at www.witschicago.org.

Gateway Program Redefines Adult Ed Unique merit program provides academic support, career planning and tuition assistance to high-level ESL and GED students To support adult education students’ successful transition to college-credit courses, City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) has expanded its unique Gateway program to all seven of its colleges for the Fall 2012 semester. All students selected for the program —known as Gateway Scholars—take the new Gateway College Success Seminar as their first college-
dents with college aspirations, redefines adult education as an “on ramp” to college. Among other things, the program includes tuition-waived courses, mandatory advising sessions with college transition specialists and advisors, recognition events and the College Success Seminar course. It supports a key goal of CCC’s ongoing Reinvention initiative: to increase the number and share of adult education students who advance to and succeed in collegelevel courses. The College Success seminar, which was successfully piloted at
tor’s recommendation letter and an essay detailing college goals. “The College Success seminar taught me a lot. When it started, I didn’t know what to expect in college,” said Elizabeth Marquez, a Gateway scholar who completed the seminar this summer at Daley College. “The class taught us to be prepared, and informed us about City Colleges’ Wellness Center, tutors, and other tools that we can use to succeed. We are more prepared to be in college now.” A former ESL student who became a U.S. citizen in August, Marquez is the founder and president of the CCC’s first Gateway scholars’ student club. She is taking college-credit classes at Daley this fall while working part-time at CCC’s District Office, where she is helping to chart the future of the Gateway program as part of Reinvention. “As the largest adult education provider in Chicago, City Colleges has a responsibility to ag-
gressively help more students move through college courses to earn a credential to improve their lives and employment prospects,” said Chancellor Cheryl Hyman. “That’s what the Gateway program does: support the college dreams of some of our most promising and ambitious students.” This fall, more than 280 students are enrolled in Gateway, up from 138 in fall 2011, when the program operated at three city colleges: Daley, Olive-Harvey and Truman. Gateway is based on the successful Truman College Incentive Program, which received the 2010 Innovation Award from the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators. From fall 2007 to spring 2011, Truman College saw a steady upward trend of students who continued their college studies even after completing the Incentive Program. Program participants’ grades and course completion
rates surpassed those of the overall credit population. Incentive students earned A’s in 51 percent of all the credit courses they took in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009, while the Truman credit population overall earned A’s in 29 percent of their courses during the same period. The College Success seminar is part of Gateway’s Phase 1, during which students simultaneously enroll in adult education and college credit courses. In Phase 2, students make a full transition to college classes with support from mandatory sessions with a college advisor. In Phase 3, students advance toward their degree or certificate. World Trust Partners with Chicago Area Project A practitioner focused workshop on racial inequity based on the new documentary film, “Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity,” directed by Dr. Shakti Butler, was held on September 26, 2012 at DuSable Museum in Chicago. The event, co-sponsored by World Trust in partnership with Chicago Area Project, DePaul University and the DuSable Museum, preceded the official world premier of the “Cracking the Codes” documentary at DePaul University on September 27th. These events represent the beginning of a multi-city tour for the provocative film. The DuSable workshop, led by Butler included dialogue with violence prevention practitioners. The session featured a screening of “Cracking the Codes,” a documentary that helps disentangle internal beliefs, attitudes, and pre-judg-
ments about race. The movie is designed to incorporate thoughtful reflection and engagement. The “Cracking the Codes” film and workshop provided a framework for viewing racial inequity and oppression and built skills that address the structural drivers of social and economic inequities. At the event, film clips were braided with exchanges of experiences facilitated by Shakti Butler. Participants responded with enthusiasm to both the film and the facilitated experience exchanges. A sampling of their evaluations includes: “I was engaged on so many levels. The film is a must see to start the discussions about who we really are and how we must finally begin the discussions that will lead to effective action and change.” (Female, age 62, Muteeat)
“The film was excellent. It was meaningful because systematic injustice and racial inequality is in every fiber of American culture and history.” (Male, age 43, Kenton) “This is exactly what I needed to confirm my own personal path and accomplishment. The entire film was meaningful for me. It was the reinforcement that I needed to be-

Stew, the Tony Award-winning creator and star of the rock musical Passing Strange and his AfroBaroque band, The Negro Problem, return to MCA Stage. They perform a new song cycle portraying their experiences of and perspectives about Chicago, commissioned by the MCA and developed during an MCA Stage residency. They also perform songs from their 2012 album, Making It. The concert is presented as part of the MCA Composers Stage series on October 20 and 21, 2012. Stew’s concerts limbo between rock show and theater and the musical influences range from funk, baroque '60s pop, lounge music, '80s synth pop, classic Tin Pan Alley, and psychedelic rock. He crafts song lyrics that move from humorous, to poignant, to elegantly perverse. Onstage, Stew is as much an actor as a singer, setting up songs with witty introductions and transforming himself into the characters featured in the songs. During the summer residency in Chicago, Stew and his collaborator Heidi Rodewald visited a range of neighborhoods with artists, elders, journalists, and historians who shared their experiences and stories about life in Hyde Park, the former Robert Taylor homes, Bronzeville, Back of the Yards and Bridgeport. They also attended a White Sox game and the Slow and Low car show in Pilsen. Stew and Heidi are crafting songs about the people and places they encountered with their unique storytelling style and personal impressions.
Stew is the stage name of Mark Stewart, a singer/songwriter/playwright from Los Angeles. In the early 1990s, he and Rodewald formed a band called The Negro Problem, named to focus attention on the segregation of the music industry. He also released albums under his own name. He opened for Love singer’s Arthur Lee tour in 2002 and in 2003 he was invited to take part in the Lincoln Center's American Songbook series of concerts. He is a two-time Obie winner and in 2004 he and Rodewald, with the support of the Sundance Institute and The Public Theater, wrote and composed the musical Passing Strange, for which he received the 2008 Tony Award for “Best Book of a Musical.” The play closed in July 2008, with Spike Lee filming the final performances for a feature film that screened at the Sundance Festival in January 2009. He also composed “Gary Come Home” for SpongeBob SquarePants. Rodewald is a multi-instrumentalist who started in orchestras

Bookworm Sez “Divine Intervention” by Lutishia Lovely c.2012, Dafina $15.00 / $16.95 Canada 320 pages
Rain Wilson Featured Artist at eta October 13-31 for Chicago Artists’ Month
You’re a person who knows what she wants. You can make up your mind in a snap, decisively sizing up the situation, weighing the options in your head. You rarely regret the solution you choose. You know what you want – and you get it. That goes for relationships, too, but in the new book “Divine Intervention” by Lutishia Lovely, a whole church full of people can’t seem to settle on love. Princess Brook was about to take a big step. And it would start down a silk-covered aisle, praise God. Marrying Rafael Stevens was something she’d planned for so long. They grew up together and Princess knew Rafael loved her. He was a good man with an excellent future. But Princess couldn’t stop thinking that she was making a mistake. She couldn’t stop thinking of her ex, Kelvin. As pastor of Mount Zion Progressive Baptist Church, King Brook was a beacon of strength, both to his church and to his wife, Tai. Sure, the Brooks had had trouble in their marriage, but they worked their way through that and now had a good, solid relationship.
Abstract/collage artist, writer, director, and performer Rain Wilson will be featured in a one-woman exhibition at eta Creative Arts Foundation October 13-31, 2012. Opening reception is 6-8 pm, Saturday, October 13 in the eta Gallery, 7558 S. South Chicago Avenue. The multi-talented Rain will also present her original spoken word poetry. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Chicago Artists’ Month. It is open to the public. For info, call 773-752-3955 or visit www.etacreativearts.- org. A Chicago South side native, Rain Wilson paints abstract acrylic images on canvas, wood, paper and masonite. Her collage work is built using various papers, gloss mediums, charcoal pencil, and acrylics. Both forms of her art may incorporate or be coupled with phrases or poetic words that help illuminate the themes — often of youth struggle, oppression, the inner struggle to find peace and
Her work emerges out of a deep influence of Baldwin, Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez and others whose poetry and other literary works have deepened her own artistic voice. Rain has been writing poetry for over 20 years and has found it to be a way to help give voice to the voiceless. She has performed her poetry throughout Chicago, Los Angeles, New Jersey, New York and beyond. Through her writing and her art, she has found a new way to express her personal search for truth and for words and images that send a message of breaking chains and finding empathy.

truth, and the joy found when we lift each other. She believes that “abstract art is an undefined, unstructured space that we can stand inside of and each find what we need to find as only we understand it, without the constraint of having to see the ‘perfect picture.’”
More or less. The Reverend Doctor Pastor Bishop Overseer Mister Stanley Obadiah Meshach Brook Jr. spent fifty years with his wife, Mama Max, and forty years with his mistress, Dorothea. Sadly for both women, the years were spent at the same time. So when Obadiah left Kansas City to move in with Dorothea in Dallas, Mama Max figured it was time to move on. She found herself a man-friend and started going out a little – which made Obadiah jealous. His mistress was his mistress but Mama Max was his wife and God willing, she’d stay that way. lives. Their marriage had withstood old flames, new children, and a son Derrick didn’t know he had until the boy was a man. Yes, everyone at Mount Zion Progressive Baptist Church wanted a marriage just like the Montgomery’s. But could that marriage hold up against the biggest crisis of all? “Divine Intervention” started out better than I thought it would. I actually liked the characters a lot, and I was glad to be pulled into their world. But as I kept reading, I started getting tired. Tired of infidelity, tired of bedroom scenes that all felt the same. And while I suppose this is the formula for these kinds of books, I had to wonder, about halfway through, if any of these characters could manage to keep their pants on. Author Lutishia Lovely creates a wonderful Church community. She made me chuckle at some of the things that happened and things her characters said. For sure, Lovely tells a good story. Too bad it’s mired in too much two-timing. “Divine Intervention” is by no means a terrible novel. No, it has its moments but just know what you’re getting when you get it. There’s great character development here, so if you don’t mind an unlikely plot, then this might be a book you’ll want. 13

Chicago Fire is hot new series with Eamonn Walker By Elaine Hegwood Bowen Chicago Fire is a new television series premiering on NBC Channel 5 on Wednesday nights, and Eamonn Walker of Oz, Once in the Life and Cadillac Records fame plays Battalion Chief Wallace Boden. Chicago Fire is set in Chicago, of course, and chronicles the daily experiences of a fire company. The new series has been described as an “edge-of-your-seat view into the lives of everyday heroes committed to one of America’s noblest professions.” For the firefighters, rescue squad and paramedics of Chicago Firehouse 51, no occupation is more stressful or dangerous, yet so rewarding and exhilarating. These courageous men and women are among the elite who forge headfirst into danger when everyone else is running the other way and whose actions make the difference between life and death. It is great to see Chicago featured in yet another television series, and having Walker as Chief Boden is the icing on the cake. A premiere of the first episode was screened for supporters, agency principals, media and retired and working firefighters, along with their families,

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continuedd from page 4)
Did anyone win in the CPS-CTU negotiations? Dear Editor: I just read the other day that the bond rating firm Fitch lowered the rate of Chicago Board of Education bonds to A. The company said the lower rating is a direct result of the recent labor agreement between the CPS administration and the Chicago Teachers Union. The announcement said Fitch believes now is a time to cut, not raise spending. The new contract will probably cost the district (and taxpayers) about $74 million per year each of the three years of the contract. We cannot forget the district already has a half-billion deficit. The lower bond rating means it will cost more for the district to borrow money in the future, as it 14
will have to pay higher interest rates. The unfortunate part is none of this was mentioned when both sides were running to TV cameras to explain their positions. As a taxpayer I feel deceived. I believe both sides should have revealed all of the facts – especially the financial ones – when they were negotiating. Even though citizens had no say in the negotiations it would have been good to know what all the actual costs would be. The finance people on both teams had to know that the rating would be cut, but they did not convey that. They were both too busy trying to get the public on their respective side. We hear the word transparency associated with government all the time, here was the perfect chance for two organizations to demonstrate how it looks, but they blew it. harrowing experiences, but we try to balance those with the good situations.” He added that the response from the Chicago Fire Department community has been very tremendous. For those who may have missed it, the premiere episode featured paramedics going into an apartment building where a shootout had just occurred and a horrific traffic accident, where a young girl nearly died, among other situations. “The stories that you will see on Chicago Fire are based on actual facts,” Walker said. “So I don’t necessarily have to mentally prepare, as we depend on the real firefighters for their stories.” Many cast members make up the series for Chicago Fire, and Walker has said that this crew is one of the best with whom he has worked. Walker is a talented, compelling performer known for his depth, integrity and ability to give life to the most layered of characters. During his short interview with this re-
porter, although some of his other roles called for him to be intimidating, he seemed very humble and appreciative that those notable characters were well known and received. Born in London, Walker is perhaps best known to American fans for his portrayal of Kareem Said on Oz. He gave an amazing performance as Howlin Wolf in Cadillac Records, scenes which had many female audience members trembling in their seats. Walker has also starred in The Messenger, Lord of War and Laurence Fishburne’s Once In The Life—with the late Gregory Hines—among other films. Other Chicago Fire cast members include Jesse Spencer as Lt. Matthew Case; Taylor Kinney as Lt. Mrs. Beal, who can remember when airplanes were new, and World War I hadn’t occurred, no longer has a functioning memory. That is why her daughter Nora Bailey of El Paso, Texas, is asking celebrants at her mother’s birthday party at Arden Courts, 2045 E. 170th Street in South Holland on Oct. 13 to forego gifts. Instead, she wants them to print their names on an 8.5 x 11-inch piece of paper and sign it, then paste a picture of themselves, and tell her what her life has meant to them. The younger Beal said a personal story also will be welcomed. She added, “Mama has Alzhei-
mer’s and the attention span is mere seconds. She will not be able to remember who you are by looking at you. She will not be able to remember that you just told here who you are two minutes after you have told her. She cannot remember that she has Alzheimer’s and so she castigates herself what she used to be able to do but cannot do now. (One watches, hearing the connectors trying to connect without success; the yearning and the straining, trying to wrap the mind around what it is no longer able to grasp). So, if you could just tell her who you are each time you speak to her, the day will be a joy for her, and not an embarrassment and a trial. Tell her where you are from DuSable (high school), Quinn (A.M.E. Chapel), neighbor, former student. “Sometimes she has to ask what

It will bless her more than you will ever know.” Mrs. Beal has survived mouth cancer and a fall over the past two years. Mrs. Beal was born in 1912, the same year Oreo cookies went on sale, postage stamps were 2 cents and William Howard Taft was President of the United States.

She also lived in Oxford, England with her daughter, who was studying violin there. Mrs. Beal is a composer of civil and spiritual music as well as a professional accompanist. She was greeted by an overflow crowd at her retirement dinner in 1979. She also has been elected to the Chicago Senior Çitizens Hall of Fame. Quinn Chapel AME Church recently established an annual award in her honor. Mrs. Beal was married to Rev. Leon Bailey, who died in 1976. In 1985 she married Levi Beal, who died after a fall in 1987. Nora and Andrea are Mrs. Beal’s daughters.
Trinity UCC organizes, raises cash to fight voter suppression “We saw the changing of the guard in 2008 and in 2012 we will guard the change,” the Rev. Otis Moss III, senior pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ said during a recent interview. Moss said the faith community has a new challenge in the face of Republicans in more than half of the states who are pushing to suppress the Black and minority vote by requiring government identification. He recently took a special offering at Trinity to cover the fees anyone in those states must pay to get a new ID. The collection netted $10,000. The pastor explained that the current pushback against voter suppression is more expansive than past initiatives when churches primarily did voter registration rallies. Moss said now churches are coalescing and implementing a Tuesday Turnout campaign - http:// -
www.turnouttuesday.com/#!home /mainPage. The web site is a repository of information about registering, voting and voter education. Churches, synagogues and mosques can learn how to replicate the Trinity campaign and raise money to purchase voter IDs. The faith community is being charged with raising enough for 1-100 pieces of ID. They also are being encouraged to recruit other churches to participate. Moss said others involved with fighting voter suppression should share the turnouttuesday.com link with other sites. He cited an example of a church in St. Louis taking a lead role in the initiative and the number of participating churches has grown to 30. He added the churches have been asked to host prayer vigils on November 5. He said to attract younger voters the church is host-

There are several court challenges against the suppression laws. Moss explained if those working to suppress the vote are successful it will mean that 44 per cent of the young people who voted in 2008, when President Barack Obama was elected, will not be able to vote on November 6. “In 2008 we had the highest participation by young people,” Moss added.
