Marcus Theatre changes Dreadlock policy; Teen says

THANKS By J. Coyden Palmer The much-anticipated opening this week of the new Marcus Cinema in south suburban Country Club Hills is off to a rocky start after the company issued an apology to a Black teen who had been offered a job, but was fired because of her hairstyle. Set to open October 14 on 167th Street—

Tyler House two blocks west of Pulaski—the theaters have been renovated after filling a vacancy when Loews left the property earlier this year. The new theater will showcase upgraded audio and visual effects in addition to

customer amenities, like premiere food and beverage options and new stadium seating. Last week, there was public outrage against the company after Markham teen, Tyler House, was fired on her first day of work due to her dreadlock hairstyle. Earlier this year, a federal court ruled companies could ban certain hairstyles, so when Tyler showed up for training on October 3, a Marcus employee saw her hair and House was pulled aside and told of the policy. House stood her ground and decided to voluntarily leave for the day. She went home and told her mother, who was not happy, and went on a public tirade against the company. “Why is it that dreadlocks are not permitted in [sic] your employees, but it’s okay for us to spend our dreadlock money in your company?” asked House’s mom, Darnetta Herring. “They come to an African-American neighborhood, but they discriminate against some of us.” House’s mother’s comments were benign compared to her sister, Toi Perry, who took to Facebook to launch into Marcus Theatres. She said the company’s own stupidity allowed them to miss out on an intelligent, young lady, who would have added to their business. She said she was upset when her younger sister called her crying saying she had been fired because of her hair. “When your little sister calls you crying because a job revokes her job offer on the first day just because she has dreadlocks... it makes your heart hurt a little,” stated Toi

Perry. After people on social media started threatening to boycott the new business, the com-

pany reacted quickly to try to quell the controversy. (Continued on page 3)

Jackson’s 75th birthday bash prompts election countdown By Chinta Strausberg It was standing-room-only at Dr. King’s Workshop on October 8 where the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. celebrated his 75th birthday party for nearly six hours with tributes from many, including Rev. Al Sharpton. Sharpton used the occasion to launch a 30-day election countdown with the Black vote being the deciding factor of who wins the Oval Office. The four-tiered party, which included breakfast, live broadcast and a press conference at noon, followed by a luncheon, was organized by the powerful Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown. She called Jackson “an international icon, a Civil Rights legend, a man who has stood for over 50 years fighting for social justice…fighting for you” and a man who is “trying to make this world a better place for you and for me.” In the spirit of the movement, Sharpton, who was interviewed by

We’ve got to protect the right to vote, and we’ve got to get people out to vote. “There is nothing more appropriate than today on Rev. Jesse Jackson’s 75th birthday to have a 30-day countdown. Mayor paints brighter picture during budget address izen is still bearing most of the financial crunch to live and work in Chicago. “Mayor Emanuel continues his streak of asking working families to pay more while the wealthiest continue to not pay their fair share,” said Amisha Patel, Executive Director of Grassroots Work Collaborative. This is not sustainable. Plastic bags are not going to generate the resources needed to address the economic and racial inequality driving so much of the violence in our communities. It is our hope that we can build on the release of additional TIF funds and win more substantial progressive revenue in the near future.” Emanuel said since he took office he has reduced the city’s structural debt from $635 million in 2011 when he took office to $138 million in 2017. He also got big cheers from the gallery when he said he was able to do this without doing what his predecessor Mayor Richard Daley did, which was selling off city assets like the skyway and privatizing the city’s parking meters. The city is also for the first time in a long time paying into its reserve accounts.

By J. Coyden Palmer Mayor Rahm Emanuel told the City Council earlier this week the city’s finances are stabilizing and Chicago’s financial outlook is better today than it was five years ago when he first became mayor. The 30-minute address in council chambers on Oct. 11 highlighted several areas and promised no new taxes. That is a relief for taxpayers who are still fuming over an increase in garbage and sewer fees last year, drivers who have seen an increase in city sticker prices and proposed taxes on bottled water and everything else the city could tax the last few years. “It is a budget free of an immediate pension crisis, free of the black cloud of insolvency threatening the retirements of city employees and the financial future of Chicago,” Emanuel said. But others are not as optimistic as the picture the Mayor painted. While the city has made some financial gains recently as indicated by both Fitch and S&P Global Ratings upgrading the city’s debt rating to stable from the previous negative last week, the average cit-

Some have expressed concern, and their reaction has led us to re-examine that decision. Marcus Theatres operates in many communities across the United States, and our success is due, in part, to our talented team. Our associates come to work each day committed to delivering a best-inclass experience to everyone who passes through our doors. Effective immediately, no job candidate will be disqualified because they wear dreadlocks. We are in the process of reviewing our protocols, and will update them to ensure that they reflect our professional standards and commitment to recognizing the diversity of our associates.” The company also offered House her job back, but at Crusader press time, she had declined to accept their offer. House told the Crusader her first impression of the company was not a good one, and she found it ironic that their first impression of her was good enough that they hired her when she wore dreads during the interview, but was not told she would have to change before www.chicagocrusader.com

working there. She added she has no plans of patronizing the business either. In the meantime, the process of moving forward with the grand opening has not tempered the excitement for many moviegoers in the area. They say the theater will address several needs in the area, including jobs, quality entertainment and much needed tax revenue for Country Club Hills, which has yet to build an outlet mall it has been advertising for years. “The area has been kind of dying, and I’ve been quite concerned,” said former resident Kayla Hall, who now lives in Monee. “I blame the mayor and aldermen for not keeping businesses coming in. Nobody knows what is happening with the outlet mall. So, this is a great thing and should be celebrated. I plan on coming here with my kids a lot so they can see their old friends from the neighborhood.” On opening weekend, the new theater will feature five films: “The Birth of a Nation,” the story about the Nat Turner slave revolt; thrillers “The Girl on the Train” and “The Accountant,” along with the new Kevin Hart comedy, “Kevin Hart: What Now?” and the science fiction adventure, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel “Five years ago, Chicago was on the financial brink. Today, Chicago is back on solid ground,” Emanuel said. Patrick Brosnan, Executive Director of Brighton Park Neighborhood Council said some of the things the Mayor stated would be good for Chicago. But he said Chicago has a long way to become financially solvent for all parts of the city. “The declared TIF surplus is a

victory for Chicago’s families but we have to pass the Chicago Public Education Revitalization (CPER) Ordinance to institutionalize the surplus process. We started this campaign in July, knowing that it would be a long and hard battle. While we acknowledge that some of the surplus is being redirected to schools, it’s only the start of our fight to win education equity in Chicago.”

The city plans to spend $1.9 billion on aviation, neighborhood, and water/sewer capital projects throughout the city in 2017. All funds for 2017 total $9.81 billion. It is an increase from $9.3 billion in 2016. The budget includes $8.22 billion of local funds and $1.59 billion of grant funding. The city’s corporate fund – which serves as the general fund – totals $3.72 billion.

SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND FATE America’s origin is partially rooted in a desire of the settlers to break away from religious oppression meted out by the Church of England. The new Colonists founded their society upon a platform of religious freedom, which became part of the fabric of the new society. Today, most Americans are proud to tout our religious freedoms, which is why it is so ironic that contemporary Americans are behaving so badly in this regard. According to pundits, presidential hopeful Donald Trump is supported by a large bloc of right wing Christians. These same Christians stand behind a man who has said that he would ban Muslims from the United States. This is very paradoxical considering the freedom of religion underpinning American society. Actually, there really is no real separation of church and state in America. Our holidays alone belie this fact: we celebrate Easter Sunday, and the entire Christmas season. These are clearly religious, specifically Christian periods with holiday activities that permeate the entire society, and where there is actually a marriage between religion and capitalism. Now, since it is plausible to say that there is a Christian foundation to the United States, it calls us to examine whether or not we are really living by Christian principles. The main tenet of Christianity is Love: Love thy neighbor; do unto others as they would do unto you, etc. But if we look at what we have done since our nation’s inception, it becomes clear that we have NEVER really lived up to the Christian principles that the Trumpster camp is so proud to espouse. The founders came to this country, conquered the indigenous people through guile; enslaved Blacks and others, and proceeded to build a nation established on the principles of white supremacy. The atrocities that marked the history of America would cause the devil, himself, to blush. The religious right that is so vocal in wanting to make America great again, is actually founded upon ideas that are actually antithetical to those principles taught by Christ. In this regard, they are against the ideas of Christ: they are ANTI-CHRIST. They celebrate hate, not love, bigotry not inclusion, and think that it is alright to go into foreign countries and take their resources by force. The current situation in America that provides the fodder for the presidential campaign has its foundations in this unchristian behavior; while Trump criticizes Hillary Clinton because of her husband’s indiscretions, he openly stated that we should have just gone into the middle east and taken the oil and left. How, in good conscience, can a so-called Christian take this stance? We must remember, however, that there is a precedent; the Bush administrations, both of them, did just this. In fact, the United States and her Christian allies have gone around the world, raping and pillaging, under the shadow of the American flag. And everywhere non-Christian behavior was the hallmark of activity. The truth of the matter is that it is quite possible that the world would not be in the situation it finds itself in today if America, supposedly the leader of the free world, had behaved differently; had behaved with integrity in line with Christian principles. But the fact of the matter is that it didn’t happen. So we have a message to the current crop of presidential candidates, ALL OF THEM: we will not now or ever gain greatness if we continue to pursue anti-christic behavior on the planet. It just won’t happen. And the most pathetic thing about the current situation is that there are so many Americans blinded by bigotry that they are willing to throw their support behind an obvious Anti-Christic individual who has openly said that his supporters would back him even if he shot someone in Times Square. The people, though, can make a difference. As this campaign season comes to a close, those who want to hire a president who at least has some modicum of decency, though not perfect, had better eschew Donald Trump and his right ring “Christian” running mate, Pence. The World’s FATE depends upon making the right choice. A luta continua.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has come up with yet another story he wants us to believe, even though it makes absolutely no sense. I am sure everyone remembers a few months ago when Johnson was hired and he said he had never witnessed police misconduct. Many, if not most people, who heard that found it really difficult to believe someone could be a Chicago cop for nearly three decades and not have seen police misconduct. Fortunately for Johnson, nobody in the news business pressed him on that. In the months since that pronouncement, Johnson has had some other doozies. Last week he asked the general public to believe another whopper. This one is so far afield I almost feel sorry for Johnson, especially if he thinks people believe him. Johnson told the world that a female CPD officer who was being assaulted by a man didn’t shoot the man because she didn’t want to face the scrutiny that would have followed if she shot and killed the man. According to Johnson’s version the woman also said she didn’t want her family to be subjected to living in the me-

Johnson though is asking us to believe that despite all the training and life-threatening situations this officer has faced, her first thoughts were about public scrutiny. I don’t know which is harder to believe; Johnson not seeing police misconduct or this latest boondoggle of a story. He wants us to believe that despite nearly every cop who has shot a civilian in the past 20 years claimed he or she “feared for their life” when they shot a civilian, this woman’s life was in jeopardy and she did not shoot. Whole Foods finally comes to the hood Dear Editor: A slice of the South Side can finally get rid of its food desert label now that Whole Foods has opened in Englewood. The Whole Foods people have to be pleased that people lined up for blocks just to be in the first wave of shoppers. They also have to be pleased with how much media coverage the store is getting. Why advertise when one is getting put in the paper or on television for free almost every day?

It seems like the Whole Foods people bent over backward to make the opening and early stages a success. There were job fairs, community outreach, tours with local VIPS, and maybe most importantly, a commitment to use local vendors. I read that about two dozen local (read Black) vendors have been able to get products onto the store’s shelves. That (Continued on page 18)

The Jim Crow Segment of Professional Sports, Part 2 Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Yes indeed! Professional sports revolutionized our local economies. Some of our basketball and football stars would evolve into corporate and political leaders. Role models by the hundreds including successful entrepreneurs. All of this went to our middle class but what was still missing was the improvement done to the “Hood.” Poverty, blight and hopelessness was still there. Violence and particularly hopelessness was still there. We have more than a few “ballers” making serious money. Take Vaughn Bailey, defensive linesman for the Denver Broncos. This guy is making $70 million per year guaranteed! That is serious cash money and there are many more making in excess of that. So why are our inner cities not improving? It becomes clear that local leaders and elected officials are out of touch in recognizing what is missing. The answer lies with city and county officials. That is our city councils, school boards, county boards, mayors and state representatives and senators. These are the potential champions of our local communities. These officials interacting with our

new cash makers can team up and identify local opportunities besides the evil drug business. The sports teams of America are anchors for local growing enterprise cities. A professional football, basketball, hockey or baseball team bring in financial centers. The anchors are stadiums which draw in commercial interests such as hotels/motels, business centers, retail development and local housing. Shopping areas and restaurants start to pop up and provide a boom in job opportunities. Such a formula has been proven successful many times. A fine example is the “Tale of Two Cities” – one case is Birmingham, Alabama vs Atlanta, Georgia. The leaders of Atlanta sought out professional sport franchises to help the vitality of economic growth. It even pulled back on the apartheid system of Jim Crow and provided economic opportunity for its small Black owned businesses and neighborhoods. A couple of decades later Atlanta had become a major city in our nation – hosting the Olympics and being the home of professional sports stadiums with winning teams to match. Birmingham is still a much smaller town with little economic vitality compared to bustling Atlanta. The biggest factor in Atlanta’s success was integrating the indus-

poration. In that plan was a professional basketball and a football team as the anchors for industrial growth, expansive middle class communities with local business centers to match. Today, Indy has the Colts and Pacers with magnificent stadiums for both. New industry has come in plus a major airport and a Super Bowl and NBA all-star games every now and then. Ft. Wayne remains a sleepy town of 200,000 people with its old southern ways. Indy has mushroomed into a city of over a million people. It is settled that professional sports injects its geographical base with an infusion of serious capital. What is missing is the infrastructure component is not diverse. Big time construction unions move in like Mafioso factions and are racist to the core. We have these billion dollar stadiums built by union cartels that do not and, so far, will not include diversity in its workforce. The major blocking fact is that the unions of sport leagues deny Black labor and management activity by supporting their local construction unions without realizing that those local groups are still Jim Crow in its hiring and training practices. The local union organizations will come up with all types of excuses but the deal is they do not welcome Black

Harry C. Alford trial/commercial markets. Jim Crow left and the money started to flow in a diverse fashion. All factions became better. During the same period up north in Indiana an experiment was taking form. In the 1960’s Mayor Richard Lugar gathered business leaders and developed a plan to make Indianapolis a major city. He viewed the city of Ft. Wayne, up in northern Indiana, as competition. He formed the Greater Indianapolis Progress Cor-

workers. That goes for other minorities and females also. All we need to do is bust up these racial cartels by getting the support of our professional athletes, managers and owners. They certainly don’t approve of this but are left ignorant of the blatant truth – construction unions are racist in their hiring and training. Upper management and player associations can solve this if they become educated to the fact. A perfect example of this racism is when the baseball and football stadiums were being built in Detroit. In the end they could not reach the 8% level for minority employment. This is a city that is over 80% Black! Those same Blacks will be paying the industrial bonds on those two stadiums for decades to come!! This is a big reason for the violence, lost hope in cities like Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, Oakland, and Los Angeles, just to name a few. The time to start fighting these racist construction practices has come. The player associations of our professional sports associations need to wake up and recognize. CBC members join the call for Payday Lending Reform By Charlene Crowell (NNPA Newswire Columnist) Within days of the October 7 deadline for public comment on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s proposed payday rule, 104 Members of Congress from 32 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands together called for strong consumer protections, and an end to both regulatory loopholes and predatory debt traps. Joining the effort were 31 of the current 43 House members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), including its chair, Representative G. K. Butterfield from North Carolina. The Tar Heel State enacted strong laws years ago to end predatory payday loans. Additionally, many of these CBC members come from states that have failed to enact meaningful payday reform including Alabama, California, Michigan, Missouri, and Texas. Led by California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, their joint September 28 letter to CFPB Director Richard Cordray was as di-

rect as it was timely. “For years, some small-dollar lenders – offering products such as payday loans, deposit advances, vehicle title loans, and high-cost installment loans – have extracted billions of dollars in abusive fees and high interest rates from the very consumers and communities who can afford it the least,” wrote the representatives. “The result has left millions of consumers trapped in an endless cycle of debt…The CFPB’s final rule must close every loophole that is shown to harm consumers.” Citing earlier CFPB research on other small dollar loans like car-title, the Congress members noted that 14 states and the District of Columbia have already enacted interest rate caps of 36 percent. In their collective view, federal regulation should complement these state protections. “Though we applaud the CFPB for taking the necessary first steps to address predatory practices in the small-dollar credit market,” wrote the members, “we urge you to adopt a final rule with additional protections that will ensure responsible lending. Only a comprehensive federal framework, free of harmful loopholes, can supplement existing

www.chicagocrusader.coM

state protections and help stop consumers from becoming entrapped.” This strong congressional appeal continues the calls for fair lending that has included clergy, consumer advocates, civil rights organizations and others. For example in late September, Rev. Dr. Cassandra Gould, executive director of Missouri Faith Voices spoke to a September 27 nationwide call with concerned clergy and consumer advocates. “We have to pull the veil off unscrupulous lenders so they stop preying on people in our congregations and communities to make sure the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau puts forward and enforces a strong and effective rule,” said Rev. Dr. Gould. Also present at the gathering was Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who encouraged the White House in the aftermath of the housing crisis to create a financial regulator for America’s consumers. “Payday lending is an enormous problem for far too many people,” said Warren. “Billions of dollars are flowing out of communities that can least afford it and directly into the pockets of some of the sleaziest lenders in America.”

payday borrowers; • Over 75 percent of these fees are generated by consumers who are trapped into debt with 10 or more loans per year; and • Nearly 1 in 4 payday borrowers rely upon public assistance or retirement benefits as a major source of income. “To get it right, the CFPB must base its determination of whether a loan is affordable on whether a borrower has enough income, after the new loan payment, to meet basic needs like food, housing and transportation,” said Mike Calhoun, CRL President. “And the rule must be air tight: We are talking about an industry as notorious as any for exploiting loopholes in laws aiming to rein them in, and wreaking true financial ruin on working families in the process. “Without meaningful upfront underwriting and strong protections Charlene Crowell against loan flipping, lenders can trap For several years, payday lending re- borrowers in high-cost debt for years forms have been a prominent part of on end,” Calhoun concluded. the research and advocacy by the Center for Responsible Lending. Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill Day-by-day, African people in America are becoming more familiar with the concept of reparations and what it means to our continued struggle in America for self-determination, liberation, independence, and freedom. Therefore, we must be clear that reparations means “repair” for the damages inflicted on a people or a nation. In pursuit of this repair, we are conscious of the fact we must engage in the process and assume responsibility for repairing ourselves,

WHY THEY OWE US! which includes: changing the way we think, supporting our own institutions (particularly financially), supporting our families, supporting our own Black business enterprises, cleaning up our communities, and changing the way we relate to and think of each other as a people. These are just a few of the internal repairs we must constantly work on. In this connection, part of our internal repair is to struggle, fight, mobilize, and organize to demand external reparations from those governments, corporations, and institutions that are responsible for our historical and continuing state of oppression. Just as Jewish people proclaim, “Never Forget,” African people should do no less! We should “Never Forget” that “They Owe Us!” Part of our internal repair is to consciously understand that “We Are Owed” and that we have a historic responsibility to demand reparations from those forces of white supremacy that continue to benefit from what they did to us and that lingers on as part of the vestiges of our enslavement. As we continue to organize around the issue of reparations, we should be clear that “They Owe Us” for: 1. The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery: The United Nations World Conference Against Racism declared that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery were Crimes Against Humanity. Crimes against humanity have no statute of limita-

tions. 2. The Expropriation of Our Labor: For more than 250 years, we were forced to work for free. Our free labor was a major ingredient in the building of the United States and its wealth as a nation. Also, the thousands of white individuals and their families that accumulated wealth and continue to this day to benefit from this free labor. 3. The Slave Code Laws: The slave owners developed their own codes of what they could do to enslaved African people in America that permeated throughout the emergence of this country. In many ways, informal slave codes exist today (racial profiling). 4. The Destruction of the African Family: The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery had a devastating impact on destroying and dismantling African families. 5. The Raping of African Women: Our capture and enslavement provided white men with the power to rape African women and girls by the thousands without reprisal. 6. The Fugitive Slave Laws: When our enslaved ancestors resisted their enslavement and fled plantations, the government of this country sanctioned laws and policies that supported the capture and return of so-called “runaway slaves,” enslaved Africans. The Dred Scott Decision should be consulted to fully understand the implications of the Fugitive Slave Laws.

7. The Colonizing of Our African Culture: Created systems by law and societal practices that forbade African people, in our captured state, to engage in our traditional spiritual and cultural practices. 8. The KKK Night Riders and Lynchings: The Ku Klux Klan was established in the late 1860s as a secret society whose mission was to exterminate, by any means necessary, African people in America. They were known to have been responsible for the lynching, and murdering of thousands of African men, women, and children. 9. The 13th and 14th Constitutional Amendments: The abolishment of slavery was really a constitutional scam and the 14th Amendment that allegedly made African people citizens of America was imposed on us. We were never asked if we wanted to be citizens. 10. We Were Denied Our 40 Acres and Our Mule: We didn’t get it! We were sold down the river and the land was given to white confederate soldiers. 11. The Jim Crow Laws: The Jim Crow Policies of the United States of America became the fabric and foundation of American society after the period of Reconstruction. Jim Crow Laws and Policies reinforced the foundation of white supremacy and Black inferiority in every aspect of American society. 12. The Fighting and Dying in Imperialist and White Suprema-

cist Wars: We fought and died and continue to fight and die for the freedoms of others and were / are denied our own freedoms and civil rights. 13. The Assassination of Black Leaders: Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Fred Hampton, and Mark Clark, to name a few. 14. COINTELPRO: This was a government program, established by the FBI under the direction of J. Edgar Hoover, designed to destroy the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. 15. The Crack Epidemic: Research reveals that the United States Government, through the CIA, targeted Black communities for the dispensing of Crack Cocaine. 16. The Criminalizing of Our Youth: It should be obvious that the aim of the Prison Industrial Complex is to Criminalize Our Youth to insure a young and viable work force for this multibillion-dollar industry. 17. The Jailing of Our Freedom Fighters: The incarcerating of our Freedom Fighters, thus, making them political prisoners. 18 & 19. Centuries of MisEducation and Mental Atrocities: This has caused serious damage to our people, which continues to cause much mental confusion about our true reality as an African people in America and around the world. No matter how controversial it may be in these economic times, we as African people in the United States of America are “Still Owed!”

WHY TRUMP MUSTN’T WIN By Julianne Malveaux House Majority Leader Paul Ryan (R-WI) is anticipating a Trump win in November. Or, at least, he is preparing for it. He says that if Republicans hold sway in the White House, the House and the Senate, he plans to use budget reconciliation to repeal the American Care Act (also known as Obamacare) and to impose tax cuts on the wealthy. Ryan says he will not even attempt any bipartisanship as he shoves his regressive agenda down the throats of our people. Instead, he says that he can make it work, especially if he has a Trump White House. This is, perhaps, why Republicans who appear to have at least a little bit of good sense are going for the nonsense. They know that Mr. Trump, with his head in the cloud and his rhetoric in the gutter, will let them get away with anything they want. He will agree to their tax cuts because they coincide with his agenda to reward the wealthy. Trump will go along with cuts to Obamacare because he wasn’t loving it in the first 6

place. He will let conservative Republicans hold sway, especially if they reward him with their votes in November. Paul Ryan calls his plan a “Better Way” policy agenda. It is an aggressive move that assumes that Republicans will control both the House and the Senate. They might not – if people vote, and vote down ballot, there is a real chance that Democrats can control the Senate. The House is a much bigger challenge, and it is likely that Republicans will continue to hold sway in the house. But there are too many folks who say they won’t vote, and their votes could make a real difference. In Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Florida (among other states), those who choose to refrain from voting are really voting for a Trump-Ryan agenda. The attack on Obamacare is especially problematic. While the President’s Affordable Care Act is clearly flawed, it expanded health insurance for more than 20 million people. It isn’t the desired single payer care, but it provides opportunity and takes the first step in expanding the social contract since the Roosevelt years. The American Care Act can be used as a foundation to ex-

Dr. Julianne Malveaux pand health insurance coverage and, in my mind, single-payer is the ultimate goal. But legislators rejected the singlepayer plan that Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Ma) proposed for decades. The Affordable Care Act is a compromise. We need to move forward in improving the ACA, not backward in repealing it. Trump and Ryan would restrict rights instead of expand-

ing them. According to Politico, Paul Ryan thinks that a divided government contributes to gridlock. He’d be happy if the Presidency, the Congress, and the Senate were all Republican. What about the rest of us? Does he see our voice in this? Not according to Ryan. He tells Politico “I’m tired of divided government. It doesn’t work very well.” He seems to ignore the fact that there are legitimate differences among legislators and that these differences need to be worked out. He is uninterested in compromise. Instead, he wants to shove his position down the throats of other people. Paul Ryan has explicitly called Donald Trump a racist. He has eschewed many of his policies. Other Republicans have been openly repulsed by their bellicose standard bearer, disturbed by his racist bluster and his wacky wildness. But they have thrown their discernment to the wind, embracing the man they have described as a rabid racist because they prefer him to an embrace of integrity. As we count down to the November 8 election, people are coming forward

to say they are undecided, conflicted, and have to vote for third parties because they can neither tolerate Clinton nor Trump. But the bottom line is that either Clinton or Trump will win the Presidency. Really. Those Republicans who support Trump are openly supporting evil. They will dance with the devil to their detriment. African Americans, especially, need to look at that which Mr. Trump has promised. He has promised discrimination. He has described our lives as hell. He has been a bully and a documented discriminator. He has been too much. He should be enough to repel us. Paul Ryan has called Trump a racist, but he is willing to dance with the devil because it serves his purposes. What about you? Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Now I know Ima done talked about all hell breaking loose before, but this past weekend was truly a mess and describes “all hell breaking loose like no other time. Donald Trump has talked about women before, calling them pigs, fat, saying that a TV reporter was “bleeding from whatever, talked about Fiorina’s face being one “no one would vote for, but he talked about women so bad in that “Access Hollywood tape that it truly showed folks what he thought about women. He really thinks that women are stupid and only for one’s pleasure. Needless to say almost everyone pulled out their support. So his response was to bring four women to the Sunday night debate, three saying that former President Bill Clinton had sexually abused them and the fourth one Hillary Clinton supposedly laughed at when she was 12 years old and had been raped. Mind you Hillary had been appointed to represent the man accused of raping her. Most folks from listening to the remarks know she was not laughing at the

Ima was glad to hear it too, although she and Killer ain’t got no children, cause dese kids need to be in school every day and dey need to have teachers who care about them and are determined to reach as many as dey can. A good example is dey won’t be talkin’ like Ima, they’ll know correct English. It is expected that the teachers will probably ratify the agreement.

Whoever said Blacks Don’t Want to Work is Wrong The Chicago Urban League’s Workforce Development Director Andrew Wells recently issued the following statement in response to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) September 2016 jobs report: “It comes as no surprise that the September national unemployment rate remains steady at 5%. It’s unfortunate that we cannot say the same for Blacks in Chicago as the rate continues to be more than 3 times the national average. As a professional in the workforce development field, I find myself having conversations about why this number is so high and if in fact Blacks really want to work. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In late August 2016, the Chicago Urban League hosted a recruiting event for a construction company that was hiring 100 laborers and operators for a project in Washington, D.C. The strategy was to target tradespeople who previously registered with our Workforce Development Department, which boasts a growing database of more than 7,000

Black tradespeople throughout the city of Chicago. When news of this event was posted on social media, nearly 400 anxious jobseekers showed up looking for an opportunity. There were hundreds of Blacks, young and old, lined up – ready, willing, and able to not only work but relocate 700 miles away in order to support their families. The recent Open House Career Fair hosted by Mariano’s at Holy Angels Church on September 15th is another example. Nearly 1,000 people stood in a line that stretched four city blocks to interview for a mere 400 jobs for the new store set to open in the Bronzeville area this week. In a recent Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll, a large part of the U.S. electorate surveyed described African Americans as "criminal," "unintelligent," "lazy" and "violent." This stereotypical perspective gives way to the mindset that Blacks lack the drive and motivation to secure employment. Some blame dependency on public assistance, gang affiliation or opportunities to earn money illegally as reasons Blacks

Andrew Wells

aren’t gainfully employed. Instead of pointing out these symptoms of poverty and assigning blame to those most affected by it, more exploration of the root causes is needed. So today’s unemployment report is fuel for more talk about how the economy is steady and recovering, yet there is still an alarming rate of Black unemployment. Further, many who are working are underemployed and face wage disparities that prevent advancement and the improvement of their economic circumstances. The good news is that we are not giving up at the Chicago Urban League and will continue to work each day to be a part of the solution. Our Workforce Develop-

ment team provides employment counseling and job placement services to more than 1,000 job seekers each year. We recognize the pitfalls that await eager jobseekers and strive to be a resource to prepare our clients to become viable candidates who can stand against stiff competition in today’s job market. The League is only one part of the solution. We need help from our lawmakers to address the structural and institutional discrimination that still exists. There is also plenty room at the table for all sectors, including education, government, employers, the faith community and non-profit organizations to help affect change.”

More than 350 parents and students register for fall classes at CHIS&E Over 350 parents and students in grades 1-8 packed into the assembly hall of Donoghue Charter School in Bronzeville to hear from Dr. Percy A. Pierre, the nation’s first African American to receive a PhD in Electrical Engineering, and to register youngsters for the fall semester of the Chicago Pre-College Science & Engineering Program (ChiS&E). The program, presented by ChiS&E is held at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Dr. Pierre, a principal architect of the national minority engineering effort, opened by congratulating the parents and students just for “showing up.” Parents, he declared, should form a partnership with teachers for the education of their children. “Continue to show up for your children,” he urged, “particularly at PTA meetings. Kenneth Hill, founder and president of ChiS&E, agreed. “Parent engagement is at the core of our program,” he stated. “We have been deeply influenced by Dr. Pierre who we hold in the highest esteem.” Dr. Pierre’s inspiring message to the students provided a blueprint to a career as an engineer. Speaking of the rewards of the profession, he said “You can work on important problems and help improve the lives of people all over the world. You will be paid well and not have to worry about having a job,” He emphasized the importance of connecting with organizations such as ChiS&E at the high school, college

and graduate school level to help them along the way. He stressed that many programs are free, but he also suggested taking advantage of scholarships and financial aid. Dr. Pierre encouraged students to focus on learning and growing so that they would have many options and concluded by encouraging them to always strive to be their best. “You don’t know how far you can go,” he said. “Therefore, don’t put limits on your ambitions.” Following the presentation, parents lined up to ask questions and to learn more about ways they can support their children in pursuit of a future in engineering. “Encourage your children to have high expectations,” he said. The Chicago Pre-College Science and Engineering Program (ChiS&E) provides a pathway to a career in science or engineering. In partnership with Chicago Public Schools, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Colleges of Education and Engineering and Department of Mathematics, ChiS&E offers fun, hands-on learning activities on Saturday (three hours) for students in grades K – 8. ChiS&E offers four Saturday sessions each semester for grades 1 - 5, approximately six sessions per semester for grades 6 - 8, and four sessions in total for Kindergarten students. Parents of students in grades K-3 and 5th grade are required to be colearners and attend classes with

ChiS&E builds science, engineering, and math knowledge through grade levels K – 12; engages and empowers parents as valued partners in their children’s education; introduces and develops pre-algebra skills in early grades; and works with families to prepare students to succeed in undergraduate engineering and science programs in top universities The program is made possible with the support of AT&T, BP, Colonel Stanley McNeil Founda-

100 Black Men of Chicago’s College Scholarship Fair’ draws nearly 5K thousand Long lines circled the UIC Forum this past Saturday for the 14th Annual “College Scholarship Fair (CSF)” of the 100 Black Men of Chicago (BMC), the Chicagoland areas’ preeminent organization focused on mentoring African American youth. Parents and kids streamed into the Forum in search of information on college admissions and scholarships. With recruiters from more than 250 colleges and universities on site, it was a welcoming one stop shop for high school students seeking to further their education. Students and their parents from the Chicago area, downstate Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri met with recruiters, participated in seminars conducted by corporations and community organizations, and received vital information all focused on preparing the high schoolers for college. Recruiters ran the gambit from HBCU’s to Ivy League; Big 10 to the military. The CSF has long been known as a place where recruiters are prepared to make instant admissions, and proffer scholarships. Over its history, 10

millions of dollars in scholarship awards have been offered. Special guest at the CSF was the Chicago Police Department’s Fred L. Waller who is responsible for over 8,000 police officers as the Chief of the Bureau of Patrol. (Photos by LeVern Danley) About the 100 Black Men of Chicago Since its inception in 1994, the 100 Black Men of Chicago, Inc. (100 BMC) has worked to enhance the lives of those youth and their families who live in socially or economically deprived communities. The organization’s primary mission is to help improve the quality of life and enhance educational opportunities for young African American males throughout the Greater Chicago area. They provide on-going educational training programs, mentoring, tutoring, student scholarships, and economic empowerment seminars through the help of volunteers and community partners.

Englewood Square Development Makes History $20 Million Funding Secured By African American Land Developer And Construction By African American Construction Companies Leon Walker, managing partner of DL3 Realty Predicts the Ripple Effect for Englewood The opening of Whole Foods in the new Englewood Square retail mall at the historic 63rd and Halsted Street site marks a return of investment to Englewood and the revitalization of an area once known as Chicago’s busiest commerce center outside of the Loop. “Commercial investment is the lifeblood of any community, no matter where it’s located,” says Leon Walker, managing partner of DL3 Realty, Englewood Square’s developer. “Whole Foods’ presence as retail anchor in the new Englewood Square and history of community engagement across the country sends an important signal: together we can be the transformation agent needed to encourage more investment and reinvigorate the Englewood community.” Developer DL3 Realty, the general

contractor, Ujamaa Construction, and Whole Foods build-out contractor Powers Construction are all African American-owned. Englewood Square was financed through new markets tax credits (a program in which private investors are given federal tax credits for economic development projects in distressed communities), crowdfunding and land subsidies in partnership with the city of Chicago. Walker says DL3 Realty is the first commercial real estate developer in Chicago to use new market tax credits for new construction. He describes DL3 as an organization guided by a mission-driven philosophy focused on serving and strengthening the Englewood community. Anchored by three national retail brands, Whole Foods, Starbucks and Chipotle, the new Englewood Square development, located at the historic site of a previous Englewood Mall at 63rd and Halsted Streets, features 50,000 square feet of retail

Leon Walker space. The 5.5 acre site is located directly across the street from Kennedy King College. “The story of Englewood for much of the 20th century was a story of economic and social progress,” Walker continued. “Disinvestment and neglect brought that progress to a halt. Our mission is to reverse that trend and bring a ripple effect of investors and investment back to Englewood.” The three square miles that comprise Chicago’s Englewood community were annexed to the city of Chicago in 1889. For years, 63rd and Halsted was the community’s centerpiece: a well known commercial center, with three major department stores and hundreds of smaller businesses, second only to Chicago’s loop in both popularity and profitability. That began to change in the 1950s as other retail malls drew people away from shopping in the neighborhood and Dan Ryan Expressway construction caused broad population displacement on Chica-

go’s south side. After years of failed economic initiatives, Englewood Square builds upon the $250 million investment in Kennedy-King College. Kennedy King is located directly across the street from Englewood Square. Both developments are aimed at generating renewed interest in area housing and retail ven-

tures. “Local Investment kept 63rd and Halsted alive and thriving back in the day,” Walker said, “and local investment will be key to Englewood’s future.” For more information visit www.DL3Realty.com.

The Birth of a Nation is a riveting account of long ignored slave history By Raymond Ward LOVE SONGS: Setting down roots in Pittsburgh two years ago has borne fruit for alto saxophonist Richie Cole in the form of his beautiful new album, Richie Cole Plays Ballads & Love Songs. The album, his first all-ballads album will be released on October 21st. “I don’t play the saxophone, I sing the saxophone,” Cole says. “It’s all about telling a story. If you don’t know the melody or the words—which is true of a lot of musicians—-you can’t tell me the story.” Though Cole has probably been better known for his footloose ‘Alto Madness’ bebop style, dating to his early ‘70s association with vocalese master Eddie Jefferson, he’s hardly been a stranger to ballads. Yet the new album came about entirely by chance. CD producer (and bassist) Mark Perna booked studio time last September for Cole’s Pittsburgh Alto Madness Orchestra. When the horn section picked up a big-money road gig at the last minute, Perna decided to use the time instead for a “fun blowing session for our archives.” At the end of the evening, Perna realized that 8 of the 11 songs cut

The Birth of a Nation” is such a disturbing movie, but I know that it is based on a historical event. Director Nate Parker, in the role of celebrated slave Nat Turner, is a seasoned actor, but post-production he met with some controversy

By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, M.S.J.

NATE PARKER AS Nat Turner after the Nat Turner Rebellion began and the group smelled victory in their uprising of slave owners.

Richie Cole that night were ballads, and all were first takes. It occurred to him that Cole had never released a proper ballads album before. “We decided to finish the album at our next session,” he says. “Three more songs were recorded, the album was mixed and sequenced, and that was it.” Richie Cole Plays Ballads & Love Songs includes popular standards such as “Emily” (the name of his mother, who always asked him to perform it in his sets), “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” and “Alfie,” but also offbeat choices like “The Internationale,” the Soviet national anthem, “That Sunday, That Summer,” a minor early ‘60s hit for Nat King Cole; and “Chances Are,” a major hit in 1957 for crooner Johnny Mathis. Deepening and intensifying his always distinctive vibrato, Cole takes ownership of the Mathis song, which was featured on Shorty Rogers’s 1959 album, Chances Are It Swings, but few if any other major jazz releases. “It tells a story and has a beautiful melody, one you can improvise on without going crazy,” says Cole. “In the end, there’s no real difference between playing and singing. Chet Barker sang exactly like he played. He could break your heart with those melodies. Jack Sheldon is another example of what I’m talking about. Satchmo, too.” Another quality that sets Richie Cole Plays Ballads & Love Songs apart is the intimate setting. Cole is accompanied by a cool and companionable Pittsburgh-based quartet. A native of Trenton, New Jersey, Richie Cole has lived at various times in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas and also spent time in Chicago and San Antonio. In 2014 he moved to Pittsburgh and says, “I always liked this town,” of the city that claims Billy Strayhorn, Art Blakey, Stanley Turrentine, and Ahmad Jamal among its native sons. As Cole’s original composition, “I Have a Home in Pittsburgh,” suggests, things have worked out exceptionally well for him in the home of the Steelers, the Pirates, and a strong jazz scene in which he’s now a full participant.” Richie Cole Plays Ballads & Love Songs will be available at you favorite music store on October 21st. 14

around his rape acquittal while he was in college. The film centers on Nat Turner’s Rebellion, which occurred in Virginia in 1831, after Nat decides he has just had enough of the inhumane treatment under which the slaves were living. He had picked cotton as a young boy, and later was taught to read—but only the Bible. Nat’s father, played by Dwight Henry of “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” was forced to leave the home, when he killed a white man after he was caught stealing food. As the years progressed, Nat was an expert reader and eventually his master Samuel Turner, with whom he had an amicable relationship, used him to go around and preach Baptist doctrines to other slaves, as a way to make them more coopera-

tive and less likely to revolt. His preaching helped pay off his master’s debts. Nat wasn’t thrilled about doing this, but he complied until one day he had reached his limit—therefore the plan for the revolt. He had been beaten, because he took it upon himself to baptize a white man. He was beaten so severely that I believe it knocked some sense in his head that he and the Good Book were being used to brainwash the slaves into believing that God agreed with the violent environment in which they had been kept and conversely agreed with the white masters’ need to keep them as property. His grandmother and mother nursed him back to health, but the task was too much for his grandmother, who had revealed that she had seen this all be-

fore, lamenting the fact that any white master is able to break down a strong Black man. During the time before the rebellion, Nat was able to marry and have a child; other couples living around him were also married and enjoyed as best they could some good times among themselves. However, his wife was savagely beaten and raped, and another woman in the area, who was played by Gabrielle Union, was raped. As the film showed Nate’s wife immediately after the rape, the image reminded me so much of Emmett Till, when he was laid to rest in Chicago. I didn’t take this as being just a coincidence, neither did I take a comment made by one of the female slaves after the rebellion had began that “The whites were killing us, just because we are Black.” Many lives were lost; the first one being Samuel Turner, as he lay drunk in his bed, Nat gave him a few slices with a machete. One by one, Nat and the other men went to the white homes and killed the masters and destroyed property, until they were able to get to a spot called Jerusalem to gather up an arsenal. Historical accounts tell us that this was the first successful, sustained rebellion by slaves against whites in the United States. It lasted about two days and around 65 white people were killed. Nat was captured and eventually hung. Many people know about this insurrection, while many others may not. Parker’s Oscar-worthy reen(Continued on page 18) www.chicagocrusader.com

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment. Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted. PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Do is the Best. That was one of my mother’s favorite quotes when I would try to convince her that I was going to complete a task. It was like yesterday when I would say, “Moma I’m gon’ do it.’ She would retort, “Gon’ is a good dog, but do is the best.” She knew that too often we make plans or say we’re going to carry out a project and it ends up in words only. Someone said planning is always better than the plan. When you plan you are actually putting forth the work and details involved to bring about the manifestation. As we move into the last quarter of 2016, concentrate on your goals and strategies to map out what is necessary to get from step A to step B. No need to wait for the ‘ideal time.’ It does not exist! So often, waiting for the perfect situation only prolongs one from making the necessary steps to accomplish the very goals and desires we want to achieve. I believe the underlying reason that people wait before initiating a task is

the fear of the unknown. Most people would rather live in a known hell than an unknown heaven and it is because of fear. Not only is it common to have fear, but also it’s good to have fear in that it causes an adrenalin rush to get the job done. So feel the fear and experience it, more importantly, you just can’t allow that fear to hold you hostage of what needs to be accomplished. Resolve that the fear of not accomplishing your goals must be greater than the fear of doing them. Someone is waiting for what God has put in you to do. You hold the blessing, deliverance, courage and untold miracles for more than you could ever imagine. So do it, the worse thing that could happen is you fail to succeed. C.S. Lewis said, “Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.” No one is or ever will be exempt from mess-ups—it’s an integral part of life. Often our talk is backed by little action, as if the words alone will take Effie Rolfe wings and self manifest. This only happens when your talk equals faith done to you (Matthew 9:29).” Any“…according to your faith let it be one who has ever done anything

The way to change your life and impact the lives of others is to stop hiding behind fear. One word of encouragement could catapult someone into destiny. You don’t have to be perfect to live in an imperfect world. Not only are you imperfect, so is the world and everyone around you. God doesn’t require perfection—He only wants availability for you to be about kingdom work and begin to walk into a spirit of excellence. So step into your greatness and out of fear—just get it done. When you do what you have said—it really is the best. What can you do…?

probably didn’t accomplish perfection during the first trial run. In most cases, you have to fail your way to success. Winston Churchhill said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” Yes, timing is everything, but you can’t keep waiting and waiting until the so-called perfect time when EVERYTHING will be just right. Gandhi said “become the change that you desire to see.” Maya Angelou said, “Nothing changes unless you do…” Let’s end this year in the spirit of greatness, favor and blessings. However, the only way to get what is rightfully yours is to get up and get out. I remember several fond memories of growing up in Arkansas, one in particular was when I failed to do a chore in a timely manner. When my mother said, “Gon’ is a good dog, but do is the best” she reminded us not to simply talk about it but to be about it. Just do it. Since life is so short, why continue to wait unnecessarily—weight broke the bridge down.

The Birth Of A Nation, Is A Birth Of Awareness By Bonnie DeShong

other of his family or tribe. Nat Turner (Nate Parker) is a slave. We meet him as a child playing hide and seek with his playmate Sam Turner, the master’s son. Nat is a bright boy and is taken under the wing of his mistress and is taught to read the bible. That is the only book fit for slaves to read or know about. As he gets older playtime is over and life begins. He is sent to the fields to pick cotton, but on Sundays he is allowed to pastor a church for the slaves on the plantation. His boyhood playmate, Sam (Armie Hammer) is now his master. This film is seen through the eyes of Nat. We see the importance and respect of marriage, and the acceptance that the couple may be separated and living on different plantations. We feel the hope of GOD’s deliverance through the sermons Nat delivers to the congregation. We see the love and blessing of their children and the importance that the legacy of the ancestors and history be passed on. Nat is made to go from plantation to plantation to preach to the slaves that obedience to their masters is what GOD intended. However, the injustices that Nat

Growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s in the city Champaign, Illinois our history books didn’t dwell on Black history. We learned about Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, but Nat Turner and so many others were omitted from the very limited curriculum. While in college in the 70’s, a Black History class professor of mine screened the D.W. Griffith’s 1915 film ‘Birth of a Nation,’ based on the book ‘The Clansmen.’ I’m not sure if that was a wise move on his part as we all were highly upset about the ignorance of the film and became quite vocal. This film went on to inspire the second and more powerful coming of the KKK. As I sat in the theater waiting for Nate Parker’s “Birth of a Nation” film to begin I wasn’t quite sure if I was ready for what I was going to see. What Nate brought to the screen is a powerful, emotional, poetic, courageous, and moving mixture of emotions so deep I could hardly breathe. This film opens with African traditions. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) is a very good thing. Hopefully those men and women will be able to always meet the demand for their products. As long as they are successful other Black vendors should be able to walk through those same doors. While we celebrate the open-

ing of Whole Foods on West 63rd Street, I can’t help but wonder why as a community Black folks couldn’t pool our resources and open a grocery store the size of Whole Foods. I don’t know if it is because the expertise isn’t readily available here, or a community group couldn’t get the

needed financing, or what. I am no Black Nationalist, but it does seem we rely too much on others to ride into our communities and bring us what we need, rather than doing for self. It is great that Whole Foods comes in, gives us a new, clean and reasonably priced place to shop.

Wouldn’t it be cooler if a group of community people came together and put something in place for today, and for the next generation? We would provide pride and valuable lessons in self-determination if we had done it that way. Arthur Teasley

(Continued from page 14) actment brought it all to the big screen. As mentioned above, Parker is being maligned by critics, when other directors are able to create more art even after similar unacceptable acts or damning statements, i.e., Woody Allen, Roman Polanski and Mel Gibson. Parker hasn’t spoken much in his defense, but he has brought to America’s conscience a historic event covered from the perspective of the slaves, albeit reportedly some events may not follow historical accounts. Besides Union and Henry, Roger Guenveur Smith plays a house slave whose character reminded me of Samuel L. Jackson’s in “Django Unchained”—he didn’t agree with the rebellion and voiced his opinion that Nat would get them all killed. He figured the slaves were better off being slaves. I also noted white actor Jackie Earle Haley who plays the villain well; Aunjaune Ellis; Colman Domingo and Penelope Ann Miller. “The

three young Black men living in Bertie County, North Carolina; “They Charge for the Sun,” a socially-poignant futuristic film about humans living underground in fear of the harmful rays of the sun; “I Am Not Your Negro,” a film detailing legendary Black author and civil rights activist James Baldwin’s accounts of the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers and Malcolm X. This documentary breathes new life into Baldwin’s unfinished work; “Daughters of the Dust;” a panel discussion titled “Black Lives Matter and the Media” and a tribute to “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen. Mariano’s joins Bronzeville Community with fresh, healthy food options New Bronzeville Store Partners with Local Vendors and Organizations to Provide Opportunities for Local Residents Tuesday at 6 a.m., Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR), opened its doors in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, providing residents access to fresh, healthy food options along with signature Mariano’s experiences such as fresh squeezed juices, house-made Italian sausage, an award-winning produce department and freshly prepared meals for in-store or take-out dining. Located at 3859 South Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, Mariano’s Bronzeville is the banner’s 39th location and brings approximately 400 new jobs to the area. The new store features artwork by Chicago-based, multi-disciplined artist, Hebru Brantley and exterior murals by Chicagobased artist and urban planner, Chris Devins. The murals highlight famous Bronzeville residents such as Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Lorraine Hansberry. Mariano’s also partnered with organizations to provide job training and skills to individuals from the greater Bronzeville community as well as Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) residents. “From day one this store has been about the neighborhood,” said Bob Mariano, Strategic Adviser to Kroger and Roundy's. “Since we first identified this location in 2013, we have been working closely with local residents, leaders, architects, contractors and vendors to ensure this store reflects the values and flavors of the community. I am proud that when doors open tomorrow, we will bring high-quality, accessible food, complete with an extraordinary in-store experience. The new store covers more than 74,000 square feet and brings re-

newed life to a key intersection that has been vacant for the last ten years.
