New schools CEO ready to face challenges By J. Coyden Palmer When the news broke that Jean-Claude Brizard had resigned and Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett would begin immediately as the Chicago Public Schools CEO, most Chicagoans had no idea who she was. Byrd-Bennett is the former head of the Cleveland, Ohio schools and a former leader in the Detroit, Michigan school district, and said she was just as surprised as everyone else when the opportunity presented itself last week. Speaking with the Crusader from her new office at CPS headquarters downtown this week Byrd-Bennett said she is still getting use to Chicago’s culture. And with a district facing a nearly billion dollar budget deficit, the politics of Chicago and teachers coming off a strike less than a month ago, the New York City native knows she has her hands full. But Byrd-Bennett believes she has the skills and dedication necessary to make a positive impact on CPS. “I believe that God orders your steps,” she began. “Why am I here? I don’t quite know. But I know that I prayed on it, I talked with my family…I think I have the skills and the competency even though it is a bigger district. But I also think that you

get prepared with things that are supposed to happen to you in your life.” For the past few months she has been overseeing CPS’s curriculum. She has discovered several things that are troubling, many of which were stated publicly by Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis. She said there are long term plans to change the curriculum to incorporate more education in the area of personal economic skills like banking, stock investments, credit scores and insurance policies. However, her immediate change will be moving the district towards a universal curriculum for students in the same grade. “We are adopting the common core state standards so there will be common core curriculum across every school at every grade level. And I think it is important that it won’t be watered down,” she said. “It will be a high standard curriculum for every youngster. I recognize that not every student will be prepared with the background, but that is why we have to be prepared to provide the kind of tutorials and infrastructure necessary so that they can be ready. I’m not going to sacrifice the standards for particular schools or sides of the community because we think they are not (Continued on page 3)

By Wendell Hutson A group of Black leaders partnered 10 years ago to form an organization that today its president said is fighting causes that negatively affect the Black community. The Coalition of African American Leaders (COAL) has 2,000 members, according to Clarence Woods, president. But the non-profit, which does not have 501c3 status or an office, is still a “force to reckon with,” Woods said. One of its latest fights is for equality within the construction industry. This cause has attracted the attention of millionaire businessman Edward Gardner, founder of the former Soft Sheen Products Co. on the city’s South Side. Gardner, along with former U.S. Sen. Roland Burris and Alderman Dorothy Tillman, accompanied Woods to a meeting last week at

Congressmen Davis and Rush speak up on Tamms closure Mental Health Advocates Say Illinois Should Not Damage Men in Its Custody U.S. Representative Danny K. Davis was joined by the Director of Communications from Congressman Bobby Rush’s office, Illinois Senator-elect Patricia Van Pelt Watkins, mental health advocates and other members of the Tamms Year Ten coalition at a press conference recently in the Thompson Center to reiterate the mental health and human rights crisis at the prison and show their support for Governor Quinn’s decision to close it. Ordered closed last month by Governor Pat Quinn, the notorious supermax remains open by order of a judge in Alexander County following a lawsuit filed by AFSCME, the union representing prison guards and other staff at Tamms. Davis, who has for years spoken out against the supermax, reiterated his position that Tamms poorly represents our shared values, and that it constitutes a waste of lives and resources “Budgets are the real measure of our public priorities. So spending more than $26 million a year to keep 175 men locked in solitary confinement at Tamms, when we don’t have enough money to pay our teachers, that to me is a misplaced priority.” The Congressman also expressed support for the governor: “We must close Tamms, and I stand with the families and advocates who have worked on this issue for years, to express my appreciation to Quinn for sticking to his courageous decision. I suspect that the governor gets a bit of flack, but you know when the flack comes, the people in the community need to be there to protect those that would protect them.”

In his statement, Rush placed the issue in an international human rights context: “The U.N. Committee Against Torture considers such conditions to be cruel, inhuman and degrading, and when the isolation is indefinite—as at Tamms—to be a form of torture. What does it say about us when we seek to spread democracy and freedom throughout the world only to violate international law and our own moral and constitutional ethics in Downstate Illinois?” The Congressman also emphasized the unsustainably high cost – both financial and moral – of Tamms. “We cannot afford the cost to our nation’s reputation in the world…. We cannot afford the cost to the families of men who are driven to madness by Tamms’ regime of longterm solitary confinement and we cannot afford the cost to our own souls. Because to torture someone is to deny them their humanity, and in so doing, deny our own as well.” Van Pelt Watkins implicitly answered southern Illinois legislators who have repeatedly told Chicagoarea politicians and reformers to “stay out of their business.” She said: “This prison is not simply about southern Illinois. It is about the communities in Chicago where these men come from, and where these men will be returned. This isn’t about jobs, and it isn’t about money; it is about basic human dignity. And Tamms is a human rights catastrophe.” Since its opening in 1998, the regime of isolation and sensory deprivation at Tamms has been condemned by human rights monitors around the world, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, whose public statement is titled: “Conditions at Tamms Supermax Flout Interna-

Black leaders unite to form coalition communities. The focus must always be about what’s best for our people and not what’s the easiest route to go,” added Woods. “People look at us and think we are powerless because we do not have an office, but they are wrong. COAL is made up of 100 neighborhood groups and through these networks we are making a difference in the lives of Black folks.” One group that is a part of COAL is Save Our Community, which Joseph Watkins belongs to. “It was our group that brought the lack of Black construction workers in (south suburban) Evergreen Park to Mr. Gardner’s attention and people need to know that,” Watkins, a carpenter for 32 years, said. “I respect what Mr. Gardner is trying to do but he is not the only one fighting this cause but he seems to be the only one people are interested in hearing from.”

(Continued from page 1) at 8:30 a.m. on the first Saturday every month. Organization members also meet periodically to discuss other issues at hand, such as planning. During the meeting one of the members explained the media has erroneously reported Gardner brought the problem of no Black workers on a three-block stretch between 92nd and 95th along Western Avenue. Gardner acknowledged it was a member of the organization Save Our City that alerted him to the problem. At one point Gardner promised to have 10,000 people march on City Hall as a protest but that march was cancelled when Mayor Rahm Emanuel agreed to meet with Gardner before a Gardner-imposed deadline. COAL leaders called a special meeting last week to inform Black construction workers what COAL

and advocates like Gardner are doing to ensure that Blacks are included on city projects. “We wanted to bring everyone together to let you know what has taken place and what we plan to do next,” Woods told a crowd of 100 Black construction workers. “Mr. Gardner met with the mayor about

this issue and the mayor has assured him that he will personally make sure Blacks are working on city projects.” But beyond the current battle for more construction workers Woods said COAL routinely fights for such issues as affordable housing, health care, transportation, and education. “These are things hurting our

Gardner spoke extensively at their recent meeting. “I met with Mayor Emanuel and we discussed what can be done to make sure Blacks get their fair share of the construction pie in Chicago,” explained Gardner. “He told me he would look into it personally. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and see if he follows through on his word. He seemed sincere about the matter but I assured him I would not wait long to see immediate changes in how Blacks are hired especially for projects in their own neighborhoods.” Mayoral Press Secretary Tarrah Cooper confirmed that Gardner and Emanuel did meet at City Hall and that the meeting went well. Gardner now wants to meet with Chicago Transit Authority officials to find out where they are with hiring Blacks for the Red Line South rehab project, which begins May 2013. The Chicago Crusader

Olympian Gabrielle Douglas brought back home By Wendell Hutson Newly minted Olympic superstar Gabrielle Douglas may not live in Gary, Ind., but she has plenty of family there. The 16-year-old made two recent stops this week. On Sunday she attended a brunch hosted by the iGlow Mentoring organization for girls at the Donald E. Stevens Convention Center in Rosemont and on Monday the city of Gary honored her. Bringing her to Gary was important said the Olympian’s mom Natalie Hawkins, a native of Gary and alumnus of nearby Roosevelt High School. “I have family here and I wanted them to see her again because it has been awhile since they have seen her,” said Hawkins, a single mother of four. “We have visited a lot of cities together. We were recently in Chicago but none of those visits feel like the love I get when I come home to Gary.” Gary Mayor Karen FreemanWilson praised Douglas for her accomplishments this summer for winning a gold medal in the women’s (gymnastics) individual all-around competition and a gold medal in the team competition.

Douglas is not only the first gymnast to win both the all-around and the gold in the team competition, but she’s the first Black allaround champion in Olympic history. “I officially declare Oct. 15 ‘Gabrielle Douglas Day’ in Gary,” said Freeman-Wilson. “It’s Christmas here in Gary today because Gabrielle has graced us with her presence and inspiration. Thank you Gabrielle for allowing us to use this moment to shine a positive light on Gary.” Her mother, grandfather Theodore Hawkins and other family members at a luncheon hosted by the Barden Foundation, the City of Gary, Indiana University Northwest, Blackademically Speaking, and Foundations of East Chicago joined the Olympic gold-winning gymnast in Gary. For the teenager, who is the youngest of four siblings, she was overwhelmed with the 300 people who packed the Genesis Convention Center in Gary to meet and greet her. “I cannot thank everyone enough for their warm reception. Like my mother told you already, we have traveled to a lot of places and met a lot of people since the Olympics

hard.” Hawkins said she made a huge sacrifice to help prepare her daughter for the Olympics when she allowed her to move to Des Monies, Iowa, from their home in Virginia to practice with Liang Chow, who had coached Shawn Johnson to Olympic gold four years ago in Beijing. “She had never traveled that far without me. I knew it was a once in a lifetime chance for her and I did not want to stand in the way of her success,” added Hawkins. “But as you can see, my sacrifice and her determination paid off.” Douglas received presentations from not only Freeman-Wilson and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels but also from Illinois’ Secretary of State Jesse White and Sen. Jacqueline Collins (D-16th Dist).

continued hope of inspiration to young people across America. I want our youth to know that you can be anything you want if you are willing to sacrifice and work

“I came because I wanted Gabrielle to know that we in Illinois are proud of what she has accomplished and we encourage her to continue to inspire our youth,” Collins told the Crusader. “She is a role model now and that should not be taken lightly. I admire her dignity and hard work and in Illinois we believe in supporting anyone who live by these standards.”

We’re going to get our kids ready.” In high school for example, the district will be offering every student advance placement courses whether their scores say they are ready or not. Byrd-Bennett said for her it is more important that they get the exposure and opportunity to access equity. She also plans on exposing all junior high students to foreign languages and algebra. She believes algebra is essential to those who want to go on to college and said the changing American society dictates that Americans must become competent in multiple languages. While she recognizes there may be a shortage in foreign language teachers, Byrd-Bennett is considering using technological teaching tools like Rosetta Stone to fill in the gaps. Byrd-Bennett said she is committed to eliminating the inequities that Black and Latino students face in education when it comes to curriculum. She said she wants minority kids to get the same opportunities that children in other communities have, without taking away from non-minority children. “I’m not pulling anybody down, I’m talking about all boats rising,” Bennett-Byrd said. “One of the

Brizard was given by Mayor Emanuel. Byrd-Bennett signed a three-year contract. She said she plans on being in Chicago for a long time as she spent eight years in Cleveland. She believes her job is an investment in children and like any good investment it needs time to grow equity. “I know how to do this work, and with all due respect, I don’t think the mayor necessarily does,” she said. “He doesn’t want to run CPS. I think that if we agree on the vision about creating financial literacy and children creating business, that’s in the best interest of the city and will benefit the mayor. Therefore my goal for me and my team is to figure out what are the steps it will take to get us there. I think as long as I’m demonstrating to the mayor and the school board the plan that buys you the latitude you need to do the work.” Byrd-Bennett also spoke about the controversial issue of closing schools and the disruptive process that occurred after plans were implemented by previous CEO’s. Byrd-Bennett cringed when the subject of Derion Albert’s killing at Fenger came up and she has observed how the situation at Dyett High School is currently being handled and said it is an issue she is in

the process of gathering information on. She said the reality that she and the general public must understand is that there are too many underutilized buildings within the district so consolidation in some instances will have to take place. Some of the factors for this are population changes, families having less children and dilapidated buildings. However, she said before a decision can be made to close or move a school it is important that the nongeographical boundaries be learned and respected by CPS because it is unwise to just mix people from longstanding rival schools or communities together. She said because of the actions of the past, there is a well deserved mistrust of the community towards CPS. “We’ve got to figure out a sensitive, respectful, thoughtful and honest way to have that conversation with the community,” ByrdBennett said. “You’ve got to take all of your data to the community and ask their help on things that you can’t get from sitting in an office. I need to know what particular harm can come to children by a decision I would make.” Byrd-Bennett spoke specifically about the situation at Dyett and has a message for students, parents, (Continued on page 19) 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL DO WE WANT STYLE OR SUBSTANCE? The presidential debate season is well underway with Democrats and Republicans jockeying for a better position in order to shore up the polls. These debates are turning into spectacles in a reality show mode. Many observers are poised to see who “wins” the debates based on the style of delivery. What is needed, however, is astute analysis of content by average citizens. For example, in the first debate between President Barack Obama and Senator Mitt Romney, pundits and public alike lauded Romney’s style asserting that he was the “winner.” It made no difference among some individuals that his presentation was peppered with lies throughout. When observing this situation, it is easy to see why many educators are clamoring for more curricula that focus on critical thinking skills. As long as a candidate can “perform” well and play to the audience, he gains supporters. It does not actually matter what is being said, what matters is how it is said. We need to be reminded that a similar lack of discretion occurred during World War II in Germany. In that case, the mesmerizing speaker, Adolph Hitler, grabbed the reigns of history and almost won the world. We need to pay more attention to the actual policies advocated by the candidates, and this must include personal research. If this is not done, many people will end up voting against their own best interests! Regarding the best interests topic, healthcare is one that immediately springs to mind. Not too long ago, before Barack Obama ascended to the presidency, Americans lamented the fact that over 48 million Americans did not have healthcare coverage. This is a huge number of Americans, and a lot of advocates spent a lot of time trying to find a solution to this problem. Many of those without healthcare were what are considered to be the “working poor.” Other citizens were denied healthcare coverage due to what is termed “pre-existing conditions.” In other words, if you presented with a known malady, you would be denied access to health insurance basically because you were already health-challenged. In America, health insurance is for those who are already healthy! President Barack Obama changed that, and he was the first president since Bill Clinton to really try to implement a major overhaul of the healthcare system, and although his approach is not perfect, it represents a major attempt to address the issue. His system, derisively termed “Obamacare,” will result in a lot of people accessing healthcare that previously were left out in the cold. President Obama is big on helping the middle class and his striving to make college more affordable is an example of this approach. Republicans, on the other hand, seem bent on a one-trick pony; they continue to espouse tax cuts for the wealthy as a panacea that would solve most of our economic problems. Republicans have been singing that song at least as far back as the late President Ronald Reagan’s term when he advocated a “trickle-down” approach to economics. The thinking was, and is, that the wealthy, if able to retain more of their wealth due to reduced taxes, will pass the gains on to those on the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder. Not! It did not work then, and it will not work now due to the fact that, seemingly, a disproportionate number of those in the wealthier class do not have the political or social will to share adequately. The bank bailouts demonstrated this notion. As we navigate the waning edges of the 2012 campaign season, we’d be best served by paying attention to what is said, not how it is said, because if we don’t, we could end up on the short end of the political stick.

In September I traveled to Washington D.C. with cancer survivors and volunteers to call on Congress to support legislation that emphasizes patients’ quality of life during treatment for a serious disease such as cancer. Lawmakers have the power to improve the lives of cancer patients by making treatment of their pain and other symptoms standard practice during the course of care. I joined more than 600 cancer patients and survivors from across the country who volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to educate lawmakers about proposals that have the potential to better coordinate patient care and reduce the pain, fear and anxiety that many patients feel during treatment. When I met with Congressman Davis, I asked him to make a commitment to patients’ quality of life by co-sponsoring legislation that gives patients more control, makes sure that their pain is properly managed and provides better coordination between doctors and medicines so that patients know what to do when they’re discharged from the hospital. Thank You Mr. Gardner Dear Editor: I am sure the Chicago Crusader is being flooded with letters to the editor about Mr. Ed Gardner and the tremendous leadership he has shown over the past month or so regarding getting more Black construction workers on city projects. Even though I only have one theme to my letter I hope the Crusader will publish it. That single theme is thank you Mr. Gardner. As I watched and read about this drama unfolding and wondering whether the mayor was going to meet with Mr. Gardner I was very much reminded of an event all of us probably remember well. That event was when the grandson of Malcolm X set a fire in the kitchen of Malcolm’s widow – Betty Shabazz – and she was burned extensively over most of her body. The grandson, Malcolm Shabazz was charged with arson and went to trial. At that trial, the teenager was represented by former New York Mayor David Dinkins, and the

founder of Inner City Broadcasting Percy Sutton. Both men had accomplished enough in their lives and careers that they could have sat on the sidelines and watched whatever was going to happen to young Shabazz happen. No one could have faulted them for that. And like his contemporaries, Sutton and Dinkins, Mr. Gardner could have sat out the construction worker issue. Like Sut(Continued on page 14)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Psychotic Denial as Al Qaeda Grows By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist It was a great moment when our military brought Osama Bin Laden to justice. President Obama had three opportunities before this to whack the leader of 9/11 but his advisors including Vice President Biden and Valerie Jarrett convinced him not to do it for the fear of failure. But leaders must dare to be great as caution should not be considered in daring, great action. So, on the fourth opportunity the President did what he was elected to do. He ignored these naysayers and gave our Navy Seals the green light. Justice was indeed served. That was good. We killed Bin Laden in his retirement home. He had retired because he would be killed the moment he stuck his head out of hiding. He was at peace with a significant portion of his family and wives. He was protected by living next door to Pakistan’s military academy. Pakistan is supposed to be our ally but this proves they are not. Al Qaeda had reorganized into a new and sophisticated operation. As our White House began “spiking” the ball over this assassination they

Harry C. Alford wanted to send a message that not only was the founder of Al Qaeda dead but the organization died with him. Nothing could be further from the truth. Actually, Al Qaeda has blossomed into a multi-division organization. They have as many divisions as Procter & Gamble or Johnson & Johnson. There is no centralized target to attack and destroy the organization. They have many names and the focus depends on the particular division. The common component is their communication flow and pro-Islamist position. They are

committed to destroying everything that is not Sharia based law under the tenets of the Koran. Christians, Jews, Buddhists and everyone else is their enemy. It is a nutcase position but they are ready to die for it. The Obama Administration has decided to claim, because of the death of Bin Laden, that Al Qaeda is pretty much dead. That they are pretty much inept and not functional. They support this by just ignoring all that these divisions are doing around the world. They are betting on the possibility that they can convince the American public that anything happening by these cells is caused by some other reason. Things like the Arab Spring and occasional protests here and there. But the sham came to light when one of the Al Qaeda divisions targeted our Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens. He was stalked and marked for assassination. They even put it on their Facebook page. There were a couple of attempts on his life earlier and he pleaded with the State Department to provide more security but his pleas were not answered. It is so sad that when an Ambassador of the United States

has to plea for adequate protection in a “kill zone” such as Libya and he is ignored. More security would have meant recognition that Al Qaeda was still alive so they denied the justifiable request. Then came the cover up. The Administration began to lie to the American people. They claimed that the perpetrators of the murder of Ambassador Stevens and his three staffers plus six more wounded staffers was from street protestors upset about some You Tube video. Even the honorable UN Ambassador Susan Rice was ordered to go on television networks and lie to the American people. She should have resigned rather than play in this despicable cover up. She was very disappointing and it will stick to her forever. Libya is probably the most populated Al Qaeda operatives in the world. They are very active right now in Mali which borders Libya. The insurgents here have overthrown the government and are well stocked with weapons from the former Libyan regime. Speaking of weapons there are 10,000 to 20,000 anti-aircraft Stinger missiles in Libya that are

unaccounted for. These weapons are being distributed around the world and my prayer is that our Intelligence Forces will seize them before they are employed against our commercial aircraft. It gets worse. Syria, which is on fire as you read this, has an expansive supply of chemical weapons. Al Qaeda has run into that nation to interfere in its current civil war. The weapons are their mission. If they get a hold of this supply we will see terrorist attacks via chemical warfare like never before. Our government needs to intercede and make sure this doesn’t happen. Instead, its head is in the sand. They stand by their ridiculous claim that Al Qaeda is no more. Go to Somalia, Nigeria, Kenya, Indonesia, and the Philippines and on our border with Mexico. They are active with Al Qaeda divisions and they are coming at us. This administration can run but it cannot hide. Let’s deal with this terrorism before it bleeds us to death. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. University of Texas’ History of Racism By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The affirmative action program at the University of Texas now under review by the United States Supreme Court should not be looked at in isolation. As Justice Sandra Day O’Connor wrote in Grutter V. Bollinger, an affirmative action case involving the University of Michigan, “context matters when reviewing race-based governmental action under the Equal Protection Clause.” An amici curiae (friend-of-thecourt) brief filed by the Advancement Project, an equal opportunity advocacy group, in support of the University of Texas provides excellent context of how the issue of race has played out in Texas and the University of Texas for decades. “UT is the progeny of a state that seceded from the Union in 1861 with the explicit goal of preserving ‘negro slavery’ for ‘all future time,’” the brief observed. “Even after rejoining the Union and despite passage of the Reconstruction Amendments, Texas sought to implement its goal of excluding Blacks from public life and political personhood. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the Court repeatedly struck down Texas statutes designed to deny Blacks full citizenship.” The Chicago Crusader

The brief noted, “Nixon v. Herndon, 273 U.S. 536 (1927), ranks among the many Texas-based cases that illustrate the state’s relegation of Blacks to second-class citizenship. The litigation involved Dr. L.A. Nixon, a Black physician in El Paso, Texas and a member of the Democratic Party. Dr. Nixon filed suit claiming he was unlawfully excluded from participating in the Democratic Party primary elections. The case made its way to the Supreme Court, where Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, writing for a unanimous Court, held that Dr. Nixon’s rights had been violated under the Fourteenth Amendment.” Despite the ruling, Texas refused to allow Dr. Nixon to participate in the political process. He appeared before the Supreme Court again five years later and got another ruling that forced Texas to comply. Higher education was also subject to state-mandated segregation. “Texas’s flagship university was founded by white Texans for white Texans,” the Advancement Project brief stated. “UT categorically barred Black Americans from the University and from its graduate and professional schools.” In one of the most famous Supreme Court cases, Sweatt v. Painter, the court forced the University of Texas Law School to admit Herman Sweatt, a qualified African-American who had graduated from Jack

George E. Curry Yates High School in Houston and Wiley College. “As the public face of the struggle against segregation in higher education, Sweatt faced harassment, on and off UT’s campus,” the brief recounted. “During Sweatt’s first semester at the law school, a cross was burned on the law school grounds. Opponents of integration threatened Sweatt’s life, in person and by mail. Vandals defaced his home and threw rocks, shattering windows. Sweatt fell ill and struggled academically, financially, and personally. Life at UT became unbearable. Sweatt eventually dropped out of school—a “physical and emotional wreck.” Blacks who followed Sweatt at the University of Texas also faced barriers. “UT excluded Blacks from living in the on-campus dormitories desig-

nated for whites and specifically forbade all Black students from entering the living quarters of white women,” the brief recounted. “UT established separate and inferior residential housing for Blacks. UT barred Black students from intercollegiate athletics, excluded them from extracurricular activities such as music and theater, and permitted segregated fraternities and sororities. UT even banned Black students from using the same bathroom facilities as whites. All told, in Sweatt’s wake, Blacks faced an all-encompassing stigma, purely on account of race.” Not surprisingly, the Brown decision was not well received in Texas. “One of the most significant racial flare-ups in recent years at UT concerned a campus landmark built in 1954 and named in honor of William Simkins, a professor at UT’s law school from 1899 until his death in 1929,” the brief stated. “Within five weeks of the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, UT named its new dormitory in honor of Simkins … “Simkins was not merely a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He, along with his brother Eldred James Simkins (a regent of UT from 1882 to 1896), was ‘a criminal and a terrorist, a gun-toting, mask-wearing, night-riding Klansman who headed a group in Florida that murdered 25 people in three years in just one Saturday, October 20, 2012

county.’” The Advancement Projected brief stated, “Black students continued to experience a hostile environment. In 1969, for example, Professor Robert Hopper greeted Black sociology major Rosetta Williams on the first day of class in a most unwelcoming way. ‘I want feedback from the students because I don’t want you sitting around like a bunch of niggers nodding your heads not saying nothing.’” A campus statue of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was defaced in 2003 and again in 2004. The Daily Texan, the campus newspaper, came under fire earlier this year when it published a cartoon that mocked the killing of Trayvon Martin, unarmed Florida teenager, and ran a feature referring to him as “a colored boy.” As Justice O’Connor stated, context matters. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND THE AFRICAN CENTERED CURRICULUM (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill The movement to implement an appropriate African Centered Curriculum in predominately African in America inner city schools is critical to the on–going struggle for the liberation of African people in this country. We must continue to demand that the truth be taught as we continue to struggle to build the Reparations Move-

ment in America. This movement has now become popularly known as the African Centered Education Movement. Simple stated, it focuses on teaching the truth concerning the contributions of African people to the development of civilization in all subjects. We must heighten the dialogue concerning the import- ance of this movement, particularly as it relates to the question of reparations. Throughout the country, Africans in America are now becoming more sensitive to challenging the racist and white supremacist basis of the African public school curriculum. Through the National Black United Front (NBUF) and its world African Centered Education Plan, more Africans in America are beginning to see the need for massive curriculum change in the public schools of this country and the youth must take leadership in this project. There is not a day that goes by that someone does not call my office seeking information and help on how to start the process of changing the curriculum in their school. Parents are becoming more and more dissatisfied with what their children are being taught. They are also beginning to realize how much isn’t taught.

It is clear that the public school system is the place where African America children receive a significant portion of their view of the world and the history of the world. And, it also is a place where large numbers of African in America youth are miseducated under the system of white supremacy through the ideas and interpretation of history that is presented to them. Let’s turn to Carter G. Woodson’s great book, The Mis-Education of the Negro to get some further insights into this problem. Woodson observes “the so–called modern education, with all its defects, however, does others so much more good than it does the Negro, because it has been worked out in conformity to the needs of those who have enslaved and oppressed weaker people.” For example, Woodson says, “The philosophy and ethics resulting from our educational system have justified slavery, peonage, segregation and lynching. The oppressor has the right to exploit, to handicap, and to kill the oppressed.” Continuing on Woodson explains that, “No systematic effort toward change had been possible for, taught the same economics, history, philosophy, literature and religion which have established

the present code of morals, the Negro’s mind has been brought under control of his oppressor.” Concluding on this point Woodson states, “The problem of holding the Negro down, therefore, is easily solved. When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions.” Therefore, it is inspiring to see so many of our people waking up all over America and seeking the truth concerning the real contributions of African people to the world. Through study groups, conferences, Black talk radio, information network exchanges, African Americans are coming into a new African consciousness that seeks to reclaim the African mind and spirit. Through the Portland Model Baseline Essays, the work of the Kemetic Institute, the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), and other writings and curriculum materials, Africans are becoming much more aware of the following points that must be incorporated into the curriculum. 1. Africa is the home of early man. 2. Africa is the cradle of modern man. 3. Africa is the cradle of civilization. 4. Africa once held a position as

world teacher including the teacher for the western world. 5. There was and there still is a continental wide unity in Africa and in the African communities around the world. 6. The first time Africans left the continent was not on slave ships. 7. Africa and African people all over the world have been under siege for nearly 2,000 years and only recently by European slavery and colonization. 8. There is an African Diaspora all over the world today. 9. African people have resisted domination on the continent and all over the world. 10. Even under slavery, colonization, segregation, apartheid, African people have made monumental contributions to arts, science and politics. These ten points, and others, have become the basis upon which we can judge the white supremacy public school curriculums content in textbooks and other learning materials. In other words, these points have become the basis of determining whether the truth is being taught in the public schools of this country. In seeking the truth about the Reparations Movement, join an organization that is working on this great, just, and mighty issue. The Truth will set us all free!

Health Care is a Civil Right By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Our Constitution offers us “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” but we can’t pursue anything if we are unhealthy. Yet, health disparities in the United States are a fact of life. African Americans have shorter lives than whites for three reasons. One has to do with income and poverty. Poor people [27 percent of African Americans are poor, compared to about 10 percent of Whites] have less money and less access, often having to make a choice between medical treatment, food to eat, prescription drugs and rent. The second barrier to health equality is proximity and access. In other words, African Americans are more likely to be located a distance from hospitals. There are fewer hospitals and clinics in the ‘hood than in wealthier areas. And some preventative clinics (such as a diabetes clinic in Harlem) have been eliminated because of money. Another barrier to health access is simply atti6

room with a broken bone is less likely to get painkillers than a White man.

Part of this year’s presidential debate revolves around the issue of health care. Mitt Romney, the architect of Massachusetts health care system that resembles the Obama health plan, is now jogging (at least that’s healthy) away from himself, rejecting plans he once championed. Or is he? Recently, he said he would preserve some aspects of Obamacare, not others. I am sure you have been asked to name three people, living or dead you’d like to dine with. I’d like to dine with Mitt Romney and the truth – at the same time. Those who understand health care challenges understand that the world won’t be the way it was and our health care system needs to be revised. President Obama, offering the first tweak in the social insurance contract in 80 years, has done so by passing health care legislation that pushes the envelope. It’s not enough, but it is better than it has ever been. Still, the system will be strained by the aging baby boomers, and challenged by the need to offer patient education and preventa-

tive services to prevent costly interventions. The uncoupling of employment and health insurance allows more people the opportunity to deal with their health. Thus, the health care industry will be pushed to absorb people who are newly empowered to deal with their health. Too many folks ignore their health because they have few options. I spent last weekend in the Mississippi Delta: in Cleveland, Mound Bayou and Ruleville. I traveled there with members of the Sojourner Truth Statue Committee, under the direction of Pat Reid-Merritt, the Richard Stockton University Distinguished Professor who led the national committee. We had the pleasure of offering a statue of Fannie Lou Hamer to the Ruleville community in the peaceful garden where Fannie Lou Hamer and her husband “Pap” are buried. There are so many reasons that the moment was moving, especially the presence of hundreds of children who joined the celebration. Fannie Lou Hamer, an international treasure, a tribute to audac-

ity, a woman who endured a brutal beating because she exercised her right to register and vote, died at 60 from untreated breast cancer. This woman climbed every mountain, cleared every hurdle, stood down the biggest and the baddest in the majority community and in her own. Still, she did not have access to the health care that might have saved her life. She could stare down the Democratic National Committee on national television, but she could not stare down the breast cancer that killed her because she neither had the dollars nor the access to treatment. Fannie Lou Hamer died in 1977 at the age 60. Imagine what we might be as a community had she been able to live to 80, or to 90. She might have been able to shape and influence our movements, offer advice and influence, keep the Democratic Party accountable, and perhaps explore independent politics and the ways Republicans might be engaged in the struggle for freedom. We don’t know what she would (Continued on page 14) The Chicago Crusader

President Barack Obama

Ryan. Again the folks that support Romney tried to say Ryan was soooo good in the debate with the Vice President. He showed that they would have to do a lot of tutoring to get him up to Vice President speed if Romney wins for sure. He must have thought he needed to do more ‘cause he went uninvited to a restaurant and rolled up his sleeves, put on an apron and washed pots and pans that were already clean. Boy or boy, wonder what pr genius thought that one up? Biden tore him a new behind. The Commentators on TV tried to make something out of the fact that Biden smiled a lot, but when you think about it, sometimes it’s better to laugh than cry. The Republicans are pitiful!!! Tuesday night Barack took a page out of the Black handbook to win. TV commentators said he must have drank Red Bull or some other energy drink, but Ima say he had a gallon of “Kick A. . .” When I tell you he laid it on Romney, I mean he had the rich man stuttering, stammering and probably looking for the exit. It sure did make a lot of Obama supporters happy. It’s evident that it seems that CNN is proRomney and WNBC is pro-Oba-

A Black man in the White House is pushing some folks over the edge. What would happen if he was 100% Black? Ima shudders to think about it. Who wudda thought that the very rich and well-respected like Jack Welch would say some of the outlandish things he has recently. He accused folks of cookin’ the books about the unemployment numbers. He has joined the ranks of Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh

and Donald Trump! The Romney campaign was suddenly reinvigorated when President Barack Obama didn’t try to counter all of those lies Romney told in Denver. Maybe it was the altitude or maybe the President thought folks would know better. Most folks like blood and fire and neither flew in Ima’s estimation in Denver. I didn’t think that Romney was that good and maybe like the President said he was “too polite.” Will somebody tell the President that liars and savages don’t respond to polite. ma. Ima got a bit confused at Tom Brokow, he is tricky and hard to read, but there is no doubt about the NBC political analyst Chuck Todd. The polls are something else. Most said that Obama won the debate, but not by the big margins they said Romney beat the President in Denver. And then they tried to come back with some nonsense that in another category Romney was the big winner. How does someone win the economics debate when he tells you that he will allow Middle America to deduct a pot of $25,000 and doesn’t say what deductions will be scrubbed or whatever. Even Ima knows that his arithmetic is messed up. But what really held my attention was I kept thinking somebody was going to throw a punch any minute. And if the President had not shown Romney how a real debate is done, why was he holding his behind as he left. Ima was waiting to see who of the candidate’s wives would be the fashion plate of the evening when a radio announcer said that both of the wives were wearing hot pink. Let Ima tell you Michelle Obama won that hands down too!!! I wish Ima could have been on

the plane on Wednesday morning to see those faces of the Romney campaign as they took off for the next stop. All jokes aside, we Black folks might as well dust off the plan Marcus Garvey had in his Back to Africa movement, ‘cause Romney talked about the 47% as victims, and lowlifes. I would hate to know what he thinks of US. But better still we had better get to the polls and vote for Barack Obama. He ain’t shook no earth for US, but he hasn’t had us put in concentration camps either. Has anyone checked to see if that is the one plan Romney has? Well I’m just sayin.’

ed Republican governor Scott Walker starts with an “open for business” manifesto but soon morphs into a “divide and conquer” anti-union crusade that rips apart the state, triggers a historic recall election, and thrusts Wisconsin’s civil war onto front pages worldwide. A cautionary tale for a polarized country falling short of the American Dream, the film follows three years in the lives of laid-off workers struggling to survive, business leaders trying to reinvent their local economy, and a state senator caught in the middle, trying to negotiate a peace for his warring state while protecting workers’ rights. BUSINESS Social Security keeps 30 percent of retired African-Americans from poverty Others cope with poverty - double the rate for whites By Charlene Crowell Although many Americans are living longer, a new public policy analysis reveals that a disproportionate number of older people are also living in poverty – particularly if they are a person of color. According to the AARP Public Policy Institute, Social Security keeps about 30 percent of older African Americans and Hispanics from retirement poverty. Yet another 20 percent of these two ethnicities at ages 65 or older, live in poverty at a rate that is double that for whites. The reasons for these disparities are tied to multiple economic impacts incurred over lifetimes spent in the workplace. Years of working at lower incomes and wages do not easily allow for aggressive savings or investment portfolios. Additionally, many people of color have or held jobs that did not provide for pensions or retirement accounts. For other workers

Charlene Crowell whose employers provided some kind of retirement plan, often the benefits are smaller. Among all people of color, AARP found that higher-income Asian-Americans were the most likely to receive diversified in-

comes in retirement years that included interest, dividends and rental income from assets. For Black and Latino retirees, more than a quarter eventually rely on Social Security for 90 percent of their family income, says AARP. According to the report, “The median annual Social Security family income of older minorities is roughly 26 percent lower than that of older whites.” The worst disparities in Social Security benefits were found in comparing women by race and marital status. Never-married African-American women usually receive benefits at much lower rates than married women of color. By contrast, older white women regardless of marital status received benefits at much similar rates to white men. Fortunately, the Social Security Administration provides options to increase the amount of monthly benefits by determining the best time to retire.

For example, most consumers can receive Social Security benefits as early as age 62. The tradeoff is that the monthly payments will be lower than those choosing to wait for full benefits. People born before 1938 are eligible for full benefits at 65. For people born in 1960 or later, 67 is the age to receive full retirement. If retirement can be delayed until age 70, those extra years of working will earn higher benefits than those available at an earlier age. Regardless of when people choose to retire, Social Security recipients are eligible for cost-ofliving adjustments (COLAs). After no COLAs were offered in 2010 or 2011, this year retirees will receive a 3.6 percent adjustment. Earlier this week, the Labor Department indicated an estimated 2013 increase will be in the range of 1.5-1.7 percent. The Social Security Administration advises that a worker with average earnings can expect a re-

tirement benefit equivalent to 40 percent of his/her lifetime earnings. Each worker’s average index includes the 35 years in which the most earnings occurred. Anyone planning to retire is advised to contact Social Security three months before the date desired for benefits to begin. When applying for benefits, documents such as birth and/or marriage certificates and the most recent W-2 form must be submitted to determine eligibility. According to AARP, “Social Security is and will continue to be the main source of income for low-and moderate-wage retirees; but improvements in other programs would alleviate poverty and income insecurity among older Americans.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. YOU MATTER, NOW MORE THAN EVER! By Cheryl Pearson-McNeil NNPA Columnist We’re getting down to the wire in this year’s race for the White House. In our digital world of sometimes dizzying 24/7 information overload, both political camps are relying heavily on media in its plethora of forms to reach you and influence your vote. As we draw closer to November 6, you are correct if you think the intensity of the political ads has increased. According to Nielsen data, this is especially true if you live in any of this election’s nine key “swing” or “battleground” states – Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia or Wisconsin. Nielsen’s summarized Designated Market Areas (DMAs) within each state show that year-to-date through the beginning of September; President Obama’s reelection campaign has saturated those states with almost 230,000 ads, more than twice the ads from the campaign of his opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (87,000). The lone exception here is Wisconsin, where Gov. Romney’s campaign leads by 561 ads. How much influence do these

ads actually have? Data shows that an effective advertising campaign in a swing state can mean the difference between victory and defeat on Election Day. It might be most interesting to watch which way Ohio goes, as no Republican presidential candidate has ever won the race without the assistance of this critical state’s electoral votes. Thus far in Ohio, the margin of the number of ads is the greatest, with the Romney campaign running just over 17,000 ad units; and the Obama camp running nearly three times that amount – 51,000 ads. Then there are the Presidential debates. At this writing, Nielsen ratings show that an estimated 67.2 million people watched the first debate between President Obama and Gov. Romney. That was up 28% over the first presidential debate in 2008 between then-Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain. Eleven networks broadcast live coverage from 9:00 to 10:30 pm, while Telemundo aired coverage on tape delay. To put our viewership of this year’s first presidential debate in a different perspective, 111.3 million people watched the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl

this year, making it the highest rated TV broadcast in U.S. history. So, the Super Bowl still reigns supreme. As for the 2012 political conventions, according to Nielsen’s analysis of both the Republican and Democratic gatherings, nearly as many people (57% of all U.S. Households or 65.4 million homes) tuned into at least one of those political events as watched the first presidential debate. That, however, is down from 64.5% (or 73.2 million homes) in 2008. Taking a look at the viewership of each of the speeches by each candidate (given on the final night of each convention), President Obama had a slight edge, with 13.7% of viewers to Gov. Romney’s 12.5%. Breaking it down even further, both candidates were pretty much neck-in-neck with people over age 55. Almost 26% of this demographic tuned in to watch Gov. Romney, and 25% of the same demo watched President Obama’s speech. Each party, of course, selected high-profile speakers to address their respective conventions; with the Republicans choosing veteran actor Clint Eastwood and the Democrats engaging former President Bill Clinton. The ratings results there: Clinton drew slightly more viewers across all demographics. However, viewership among males was closest, with 9.7% watching Eastwood’s speech and 9.8% tuning into Clinton. Neil Elementary. “Thanks to Target and The Heart of America Foundation, our students have the resources they need to feel inspired and ready to learn when they walk through our school doors.” The new library at Jane A. Neil Elementary features 2,000 new books, furniture, carpet and shelves, and a complete technology upgrade, including new iPads. The program also provides seven new books for each student to take home following the unveiling celebration. “At Target, we understand that a quality education is integral to the success of a child’s future,” said

Through programs like this, Target is on track to give $1 billion for education, with a focus on reading, by the end of 2015. Target’s commitment to the Jane A. Neil Elementary community extends beyond the Target School Library Makeover program. In 2011, Target contributed more than $5 million to support the Chicago community. Target’s support included funding programs and initiatives, such as Target School Library Makeovers, Target Field Trip Grants and Take Charge of Education.

Laysha Ward, president of community relations, Target. “Through the Target School Library Makeover program, we aim to pave a path to graduation for more U.S. students by equipping them with the resources they need to excel in the classroom and beyond.” In an effort to combat hunger and its impact on learning, the Target Meals for Minds food pantry will provide monthly distributions of fresh produce and staple foods to students and their families. The food pantry is made possible through a partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. “Since 2007, our partnership with the Target School Library Makeover program has helped to turn more than 100 dilapidated libraries into vibrant centers of learning,” said Angie Halamandaris, president and co-founder of The Heart of America Foundation. “This year, we are proud to continue our partnership with Target. By revitalizing 32 school libraries across the country, we are helping to create new spaces that inspire students, parents and community members to love reading.”

ENTERTAINMENT

The NEW Four-One-One By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor YEAH....I SAID IT! It’s the uppercut that’s been seen around the world. It’s been discussed on “The View,” talked about on talk radio, been “tweeted” and “FaceBooked” for days and gone viral over the Internet. Plus, it’s caused more discussion than The Presidential Debates, Lindsay Lohan’s antics and Kim K’s booty combined. If you don’t know the story, here’s a capsule version. (You can also go to “Google” and put in ‘Bus Driver Uppercut’ to see the videos). A male Cleveland Regional Transit Authority bus driver, 59 year old Artis Hughes dealt quite the blow to a woman, 24 year old Shi’dea N. Lane, (it was first reported that she was a teenager) who had been taunting him during a ride, delivering an uppercut punch that Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali would have been proud of directly to her jaw. He hit her so hard it knocked her fake “ponytail” off her head. But what led to all of this drama and excitement, which was captured on videos recorded by several people who were on the bus that day and posted on the Internet? It seems that Ms. Lane got on the bus and wanted to ride for free stating that she had forgotten her backpack and couldn’t find any money to pay her fare. When Mr. Hughes denied her request and told her he would let her off the bus at the next stop. Ms. Lane proceeded to ask “Are you putting me off the bus?” and “Is this how you treat people in Cleveland?” Lane eventually paid her fare and called this almost senior citizen, who has been driving a bus for more than 22 years, an assortment of “bitches” and everything except a child of GOD. Words continued to be exchanged and Ms. Lane proceeded to threaten Mr. Hughes, his children, and grandchildren and even told him he could bring his “Mammy” and she would beat her ass also. Ms. Lane then made a major mistake when she reportedly proceeded to grab Hughes’ throat, spit in his face and strike him with her fist. Mr. Hughes, then stopped the bus, rose from his seat and twice declared “You’re going to jail now,” then delivers the uppercut to Lane’s chin, knocking her to the floor. Hughes throws her off the bus. She gets back on and continues to curse, threaten and fight. One passenger is heard yelling,”She’s a female!” Hughes responds, “I don’t care, she want to be a man, I’m gonna’ treat you like a man!” When the Cleveland RTA heard about the incident and saw the videos that have been posted they immediately suspended Mr. Hughes without pay and said they are investigating the matter. Mr. Hughes has refused to apologize and I totally agree with him. Meanwhile, FOX-8 News in Cleveland tracked down Ms. Lane and interviewed the young woman. This “hoodrat” declared on television that she “was amazed that he hit her back hard because she’s a woman and said he hit her so hard it “hurted her.” Yes.... “HURTED.” When the Reporter asked her about the reports she had hit Mr. Hughes and spat in his face, hoodrat said, she could not discuss any of that without her lawyer being present. I have ABSOLUTELY zero sympathy for Ms. Lane. She’s no innocent wallflower here, despite Mr. Hughes brutal retaliation. She’s “amazed” that he hit her back because she’s a woman. I am “amazed” that she puts her hands....and spit....on anyone—man or not—and expected that she could get away with it. In this day and age, as often as the “men should not hit women” rule is thrown about you can watch almost any evening newscast and there’s enough evidence that all men do not abide by this rule, so it’s best for everyone—man, woman, child—to keep their hands off other people. I ride public transportation everyday, and I have seen bus drivers verbally abused by customers on almost a daily basis......and most of the time it’s a young woman spewing the abuse. Who knows, this just might have been the day that Mr. Hughes had reached his tolerance level and decided no job was worth what he was being put through. This incident was an unfortunate way for Ms. Lane to learn the lesson of keeping her hands to herself and anyone who puts their hands on someone deserves anything they get! In fact, I think Mr. Hughes deserves a Medal!.and a raise. I really hope he does not loose his job over this incident, but it’s been reported that he’s ready if that should happen. I also hope that Ms. Lane does not think she’s struck “paydirt” and is going to receive some large settlement because of what happened. Yes, I know she lost her “fake ponytail,” but there’s a wig shop on almost every corner in “the hood.” She’s lucky she didn’t loose her teeth. I believe in treating everyone with respect, but, if Miss Lane had spit on me, I would STILL be beating her ass!....YEAH, I SAID IT! 12

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO - STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

48th Chicago International Film Festival Digest Following are a few movies that were screened at the 48th Chicago International Film Festival. Some titles are still being screened. In any case, many of these and the other films screened at the festival should soon be released in theaters or available for DVD rental. The festival runs through October 25. Tickets can be purchased at the box office at AMC River East 21 (322 E. Illinois St.) or by phone at 312-332FILM (3456). Full Circle Full Circle is a delightful film about a bunch of old timers who have been resigned to live out their final years in a nursing home. Most of the seniors have family members who are just concerned about their inheritances or who have kicked their parents out of the primary home, because they no longer want to look after them. To make the days go faster, someone comes up with the novel idea to enter into a talent contest; just to dust their brains off and keep them energized, instead of being lulled into dullness just waiting for the next meal or next card game. Full Circle is a film that had me at once crying and laughing. It is a commentary on society and what happens when people grow older and feel alienated and discarded from family. Mr. Sophistication Former Chicago school teacher and actor Harry Lennix Jr. is the lead character in Mr. Sophistication. He plays Ron Waters, a troubled comedian/actor at a crossroads in his career. Waters is married to Tatum O’Neal, and his career has seen better days. The marriage appears to be strained, because when he tells her that he is leaving Chicago to go clear across the country to Los Angeles because, in his words, folks out there had been asking for him, she is very concerned about their time away from each other. Waters heads to Los Angeles with hopes of a comeback and also with some relief to get away from his wife and the rut. But as the movie develops, Waters begins a relationship with a younger woman and pretty much finds himself behaving on stage in the same manner that helped derail his career in the first place. Mr. Sophistication is a strange movie filmed in an even stranger, dark

way. Tey (or Today) Tey is an introspective look at one man’s last day on earth. Satche, played by veteran performance artist, poet and actor Saul Williams, had previously been educated in America and is shown waking up in his mother’s home in what the spirits and elders have proclaimed as his last day. The movie can’t help but place on viewers’ minds: how would you spend your last day? Tey was celebrated by most in his

African village, before he attempted to tie up loose ends with friends and his immediate family. Walking through the streets of his home town in Senegal he takes in the sites of his past, but he is often questioned by friends as to why he even left the United States. At times, not many words are spoken, as coming to terms with the end of one’s life is strictly an internal and personal experience. I enjoyed watching Tey, as

Paradise – Love Paradise – Love takes a look at the sex tourism trade as a woman from Germany takes a vacation to a resort in Kenya. Initially, I don’t think she was looking to make a love connection, but she follows the lead of other “Sugar Mammas” who tell her that the Kenyan men are “horny beasts,” and they leap at the chance to have sex with white women. Conversely, the female tourists view the Kenyans as erotic men who “smell like coconuts all over” and are ready, willing and able to please—but at what cost? The women are actually being used, with one woeful tale after another of trouble in the Kenyan man’s family, or they need money for the hospital or want a donation for the local school. I am ambivalent about this movie, because it feeds into the stereotypes of Black male sexual prowess and at some points, the Kenyan men constantly bugging the female tourists to “try out their wares” becomes disgusting.

ENTERTAINMENT South Side Community Art Center presents Son of Man Book II Works by Artist Raymond Thomas offer a reVision of the Christ The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) is hosting a special art exhibit, “Son of Man (book II): A reVision of the Christ” that opened on Friday, October 5th with a reception. The exhibition is the second in a three-part series of acrylics, mixed media and collage works,

in which artist Raymond Thomas repurpose those images, stripping away dogma and traditionalized visual tenets to create a new vision of the Christ; a “re-vision” of personal spiritual relevance, not only for himself but for his community and for society as a whole. Thomas’ imagery for this series

is set within a contemporary urbanized landscape that echoes the sentiment of Matthew 11:19 which reads: “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.” He uses abstraction and abstract expressionism to create “mini-series” within the larger concept. His hope is when experienced together, his works will convey the idea of the multiple planes of reality in which The Son of Man exists and operates in our minds, body’s and spirits. The exhibit will run through November 3 at SSCAC at 3831 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago. For more information call 773-373-1026 About the South Side Community Art Center Currently the South Side Community Art Center continues to act as a resource for the arts community locally and abroad. As the oldest African American Art Center in existence it takes pride in its past and present contributions to the development and showcasing of emerging and established artists.

Englewood Film Festival set for sophomore year By J. Coyden Palmer For the second year, African American films will be showcased on the South Side during the Englewood Film Festival Oct. 2528. This year’s festival will be held at Kennedy-King College, 6301 S. Halsted; Team Englewood Community Academy, 6201 S. Stewart; and ICE Theatres, 210 W. 87th Street. The Englewood Film Festival is built to enrich the community of Englewood. The event continues to bring local access and exposure to a first class festival. Residents can enjoy opportunities to meet aspiring filmmakers and industry notables, learn about film careers, and enjoy a family friendly environment. The vision of local filmmaker Mark Harris, organizers this year have decided to expand the festival to multiple venues throughout the South Side. During its inaugural year, all events were held at Lindblom Math and Science Academy in Englewood. With more venues being used, Harris hopes to attract more people to the festival. “Obviously we want to build upon and grow on the success we had with last year’s festival,” Harris said. “I appreciate all that went into last year’s event and we be-

lieve having some of the films showcased at ICE Theatres, the only movie theatre on the South Side and in a high traffic area, will help us tremendously achieve this goal.” Harris added The Englewood Film Festival is also an excellent vehicle for filmmakers to enter their work and establish festival credits. The goal of the panels, films, and overall event is to highlight the heart of a community plagued with negative publicity. “There is good news in Englewood... it is in the residents, businesses and in ... The Englewood Film Festival,” said Alisa Inez, producer of the festival along with Harris. The opening reception for the festival will be Oct. 25th at Kennedy-King College starting at 7 p.m. The reception will feature a film about Chicago comedian Bernie Mac who died in 2008 from sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in tissue, most often in the lungs. The film is titled, “I Ain’t Scared of You,” taken from one of the comedian’s most famous lines. The documentary film directed by Robert Small features fellow comedians Cedric the Entertainer, Anthony Anderson, Bill Bellamy, Mike Epps and Tom Arnold. It

WORLD OF MUSIC

By Barbara Wright-Pryor

Ravinia Festival expands its commitment to music education To sponsor interactive music exhibit at Kohl Children’s Museum Ravinia Festival, North America’s oldest and most programmatically diverse, summer music festival, announced October 9, 2012 that it will sponsor an interactive musicmaking exhibit at Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago in Glenview, IL, furthering Ravinia’s mission of exposing young people to music. The hands-on “Music Makers” exhibit is one of 17 permanent vignettes for children ages birth to eight, aligned with the Illinois State Learning Standards, at the Museum. The Ravinia-sponsored exhibit is designed to help children discover how sound is created in a variety of

ways, how to recognize different types of sounds and the physical forces behind them, and how to manipulate melody, tempo and rhythm. “One of Ravinia’s missions has always been to develop broader audiences for classical music through education,” said Ravinia Festival President and CEO Welz Kauffman. “This is a new way for Ravinia to bring music and children together, which is key to our mission. Through our existing REACH*TEACH*PLAY school programs, which run the gamut from in-school training of teachers and students to after-school student orchestras to a community conservatory in Lawndale and the music appreciation program One Score, One Chicago— and, of course, our welcoming envi-

ronment at the festival, where young people can hear classical music for free—we have reach more than 75,000 people in the Chicago area each year. We look forward to partnering with the Kohl Children’s Museum to connect even more kids to music, especially during early childhood, which we know is such a critical time for connecting and learning.” Kauffman said Ravinia’s leadership is thrilled to link the festival’s name to such an inspiring and fun environment with a proven track record of engaging 300,000 visitors year-round. “No one not-for-profit institution can wholly change a child’s life, but when vital players like Ravinia and Kohl Children’s Museum team up, we’re more than just making cultural inroads for

children of all backgrounds; we’re making music together,” said Ravinia Festival Chairman Robert Krebs. The exhibit features such interactive activities as: • making melodies using bolts and wrenches • using soft-sculpture pegs to make a music box • moving musical notes on a staff to create a melody • feeling and seeing vibrations on string and percussion instruments • layering melody, harmony and rhythm to create a symphony • beating drums and other percussion instruments in the Jam Room • dancing and moving to music while watching your movements make patterns on a colorful video screen “We were thrilled to partner with the Ravinia Festival on the Music Makers exhibit,” said President and

CEO of the Kohl Children’s Museum Sheridan Turner. “Music is incredibly important for children’s development as it builds skills in language, math and listening and this exhibit allows for many interactive activities that kids love.” “The collaboration of two iconic institutions is a testament to our dedication of enriching children’s lives through the learning and the arts,” said Kohl Children’s Museum Chairman Donna Sims Wilson. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) ton and Dinkins, Mr. Gardner has already carved his place in the history, but he didn’t take a pass on what he saw as an injustice. Thank you Mr. Gardner. And thank you Mr. Gardner for taking a strong stand about meeting with the mayor, and after you met with him didn’t come out jumping for joy given Massa Rahm had sat down with you. You gave tempered responses about the meeting. I also want to thank Mr. Gardner for doing what he said he was going to do, and not exaggerate his success or try to milk it for more than it is worth. He has set

up a little heard of organization – the Coalition of African American Leaders to pick up the ball and run with it from here. And hopefully this group will be able to expand on Mr. Gardner’s work and more job opportunities for more Black Chicagoans. Thank you Mr. Gardner. Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Gardner for this powerful reminder that one has never achieved too much to give back, or becomes too old not to be outraged about injustice.

New schools CEO ready to . . . teachers and staff at the school, named after an African American military and community hero. “Perhaps the way in which people dealt with school consolidation in the past has been insensitive, inappropriate and one that doesn’t lead to trust,” Byrd-Bennett began. “I need to get all of the details and the facts and come to that community with that conversation. And we may not agree with what the outcome will be because we all know Dyett is being considered for closing. But very often people in school

districts get their data off of spreadsheets and it just looks like buildings. But if you don’t go to the people and true representatives of the people to gain additional information upon which you make a comprehensive decision, there’s going to be problems. I’m not going to allow what happened to occur in the same way as it happened in the past. As the leader of the system I can own that. I’ve got to come to the community and be the one to have those conversations. Being a victim of circumstances in my own life I understand that. It doesn’t feel good. It just makes people angry.”
