A big secret unravels Homan Square exposed with second lawsuit By Erick Johnson For hours, three innocent Black men stood helpless as Chicago police allegedly stripped them, performed a cavity search and called them niggers. One man, whose repeated requests to go to the bathroom were ignored, urinated on himself after police officers took turns interrogating him over and over again. Those details are all part of a new lawsuit that gives insight into the Chicago Police’s mysterious confines of Homan Square, a massive brick building in North Lawndale. It’s where thousands of Blacks were secretly detained while loved ones and even defense attorneys asked for their whereabouts for days, sometimes months. Last March, another lawsuit was filed by three men who were also detained and allegedly abused at Homan Square. On Monday, Atheris Mann, Jessie Patrick

and Deanda Wilson filed their complaint as problems continue to mount for Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. The city’s top cop is already under fire in the Black community where he has created distrust from his silence on the shooting

death of Rekia Boyd and his deteriorating relationship with Black leaders who are calling for his resignation. Those calls may grow louder with the latest lawsuit involving Homan Square, a (Continued on page 2)

It took a Cook County jury three hours Monday night to return a guilty verdict against the third and final suspect in the robbery and murder of a beloved off-duty Chicago Police officer. Marcus Floyd, 24, said nothing as the verdict against him was announced. He along with three other men, including his cousin Brian Floyd, attempted to rob Thomas Wortham IV in May of 2010 outside his parent’s Chatham home on the corner of 85th and King Drive. Paris McGee and Toyious Taylor were convicted in 2014 and are currently serving life sentences. Brian Floyd was shot and killed by Wortham’s father, a retired officer as he came to the aid of his son during the robbery. The elder Wortham, along with his wife and daughter, have attended all of the trials. He said the conviction of the last suspect in the case will not bring his son back. But he is comforted by knowing they will never be on the streets again and the public is safer because of that. “There had to be some kind of justice — to keep these guys off the streets, keep them from killing again,” he told the media after the verdict. “We are losing too many good people in this world to senseless violence. Tommy was the best son a father could ask for.” Wortham IV was loved and respected by those in the neighborhood he grew up in. An Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran, just weeks before his death he held a press conference at Cole Park, across the street from his parent’s house, to talk about how the community was taking the park back. There had been several previous incidents, including shootings at the park and (Continued on page 2)

Broke and unemployed, mother beats breast cancer By Erick Johnson The news could not have come at a worse time. This past January, Camille Collins, 44, then an unemployed, single mother of two, was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. With few savings and little income, Collins had few options. She would either fight for her life or avoid treatment because of the overwhelming expenses and challenges. Today, ten months later, Collins is a happy mother who is cancer-free and living life to the fullest. Her life is an inspiring story of how she defeated one of America’s deadliest and costliest diseases with little resources, but an undying attitude to fight until the end.

Her plight raises questions about the astronomical costs of fighting breast cancer as Black women across the country continue to die from the disease more than any other ethnic group. On top of the physical and mental challenges that come with breast cancer, the financial tolls from medical treatments alone could discourage many Black women from fighting breast cancer. Broke and unemployed, Collins had nothing but faith and some help from above. During her emotional battle, there was also fear and disappointment. When Collins had a mammogram in April 2014, she was cancer-free. Eight months later, while in the shower, Collins discovered a lump in her breast after doing a self-examination. She already had a med-

ical appointment sched uled at the end of the month, but her doctor saw her the next day after she told him the news. After several tests, Collins was told she had Stage 2 breast cancer. Like most women Camille with Stage 2 breast Collins cancer, Collins had a tumor just over two centimeters. It had not yet spread to her lymph nodes. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 224,147 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. That same year, 41,150 women died from the (Continued on page 3)

Domestic Violence Awareness for young adults By J. Coyden Palmer October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. With several recent high-profile incidents of domestic abuse coming to light involving professional athletes, domestic violence awareness is now in the consciousness of Americans, according to those who work in the field. Once issues that Americans considered a private matter, cities across the nation are taking proactive steps to try to eliminate a crime that is tearing families apart. Many of those efforts are focusing on teenagers and young adults. Leaders in the Chicago area are remaining silent no more. A public service announcement featuring Mayor Emanuel, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and police Superintendent Garry McCarthy talking about the issue has been running on local television stations. Churches in the community are also stepping up and speaking out about the issue from the pulpit and schools are tackling the subject as studies have shown one-third of high school students have been victims of domestic violence. “Unhealthy relationships can start

early and last a lifetime,” according to the Centers for Disease Control. “Teens often think some behaviors, like teasing and name calling, are a ‘normal’ part of a relationship. However, these behaviors can become abusive and develop into more serious forms of violence.” Teen Dating Violence is defined by the CDC as the physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional violence within a dating relationship, including stalking. It can occur in person or electronically via cell phone or computer and might occur between a current or former dating partner. Many teen victims do not report it because they are afraid to tell friends and family, according to the CDC. A 2011 survey by the CDC found that 23 percent of females and 14 percent of males who ever experienced rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age. Those trying to eliminate this social pariah say that is why much of the awareness efforts must start with younger generations. “In every culture, it’s the younger generations that bring about much

They are eager to make change and correct the errors of their parents’ generation,” said Dr. Sarah Malone, chairman of the board for the YWCA in North Shore/Evanston, who herself is a domestic violence survivor. After a violent episode in her home several years ago, Dr. Malone and her daughter packed as much as

they could into black garbage bags and fled to a neighbor’s home. From there she called the domestic violence shelter at the YWCA where she got the support she needed. “I made a promise to myself many years ago that when I got back on my feet I would reach back and help other women,” Dr. Malone said. “Children and women experiencing do-

mestic violence need your help right now.” Corporations and professional athletes are also involved in the issue. For over 10 years, cell phone service provider Verizon has been campaigning to end domestic violence through its various business units, philanthropic foundation and (Continued on page 3)

Last February, a blistering report in the Guardian, a prominent British newspaper, uncovered disturbing details about a police operation that was kept hidden from the public for years. On Monday, October 19, fresh details emerged from the dark and mysterious confines of Homan Square as

The 11-count, 18-page suit was filed in United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The defendants in the complaint include two Chicago police sergeants: Frank Ramaglia and Brian Kane; officers Kathleen McCann, Kevin Connolly, Alejandro Miranda, John Doe, and the city of Chicago. Prominent Chicago attorney Flint Taylor is representing the three men. According to the suit, on the morn-

them. On the same block, Wilson was arrested while buying a soda. The suit stated after searching the men, police did not find any drugs on them. The suit also alleged that police “had no reasonable suspicion” to believe any of the men were committing or going to commit a crime. After failing to find any drugs on the men, police handcuffed the men and took them to Homan Square, 1011 South Homan Avenue. On the

ing hours of interrogations by various officers, the men were subjected to the “physical threats, beatings, assaults with a knife and other forms of physical brutality.” For hours, officers used insults and racial slurs to force the men to reveal the location of illegal guns and neighborhood drug sales information the men did not have, according to the suit. While they were detained, police did not tell the men’s relatives their whereabouts. And when the men repeatedly asked to speak to an attorney or even go to the bathroom, they were denied. The men were detained at Homan Square for a day, but their ordeal continued in court where the police officers allegedly made false statements and submitted fabricated police reports. As a result, the men spent fifteen months in Cook County Jail during the proceedings. The men were finally cleared when Judge William O’Brien found the men not guilty, saying prosecutors were unable to meet the burden of proof. For their entire ordeal, Mann, Patrick and Wilson outline in their lawsuit they are suing and demanding “substantial” or actual compensatory damages for their suffering. They accuse the officers of working “in concert in order to deprive each plaintiff his constitutional rights.” The men also seek punitive damages in addition to attorney’s fees. Chicago police did not respond to an email from the Crusader seeking a

comment for this story. Chicago police have reportedly denied the allegations made in the Guardian. In one news report, Chicago police said Homan Square houses the department’s organized crime bureau, evidence section, ballistics lab, and SWAT unit. But according to an investigative report in the Guardian, over 7,000 people have been secretly detained at Homan Square in arrests that occurred over an 11-year period. About 82 percent of them have been Black and 32 percent of them Hispanic. After they are taken to Homan Square, suspects “disappear” leaving relatives and loved ones unaware of their whereabouts, according to the report. Defense attorneys have reported waiting for long periods to get inside the building to talk to their clients. Out of nearly 6,000 Blacks held at the facility, only 68 have been allowed to see an attorney. Last March, Cook County Board Commissioner Richard Boykin and Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th) personally delivered a letter to thenU.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, requesting that the Justice Department open an investigation into Homan Square. The request came after Boykin toured the facility. “I left there with more questions than answers,” Boykin said. “It’s a dark place.” Boykin said he has submitted another request for an investigation to current U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. As for McCarthy, the unraveling of Homan Square could be the most damaging to his career as the city’s top cop. www.chicagocrusader.com

Parents oppose proposed charter moratorium Chicago Charter school parents gathered in front of Alderman Roderick Sawyer’s office at 8001 S. Martin Luther King Drive in the city’s sixth ward on Tuesday opposing a resolution that would call for a moratorium on the creation of charter schools. The resolution was sponsored by Sawyer. The group of parents and advocates was made up of sixth ward residents and charter parents from across Chicago with the purpose of holding. Sawyer accountable for his sponsorship of the moratorium. “It’s unfortunate that this has become about politics and not about how to improve our schools in our

communities. This moratorium affects every community in the city,” said Lucy Reese, parent and Charter Parents United (CPU) board member. “Although the resolution has not passed through the Education Committee, parents said they will continue to advocate for free, highquality, public schools and let the Chicago’s elected officials know families deserve quality options for their children.” The parents said a recent poll conducted by Illinois Network of Charter Schools found that four out of five 6th ward residents support school choice, despite Sawyer’s backing of the resolution.

“It is clear that I and my neighbors are supportive of charter schools. Over a thousand children from the ward attend charters, and the polling is clear that families support public charter schools,” said Jahmal Cole, community activist and sixth ward resident. The study focuses on sixth ward residents, voicing their concerns for the students and the disconnect between their opinion on charter schools and Sawyer’s views. “Unfortunately the political debate has created an ‘us vs. them’ mentality as opposed to supporting great public schools no matter what type of school it is,” said Carlos Perez, Exec-

HopeLine provides ways for individuals to take action against domestic violence by donating no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories in any condition from any service provider. Since its launch in October 2001, HopeLine has donated hundreds of thousands of phones and awarded millions of dollars in cash grants to non-profit organizations and agencies. “At Verizon, we’re committed to supporting local organizations yearround in their efforts to combat do-

mestic violence,” said Andy Brady, director of sales in the Midwest region. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson last year started his “Pass the Peace” campaign in conjunction with his Why Not You Foundation. Its purpose is to raise domestic violence awareness amongst teens via something they use everyday social media. Wilson admitted that he was a bully in some respects as a kid until he really got religion in his daily life. Now he says he wants to help others who have been bullied or been the bully to stop the behavior. “I was a bad kid growing up,” he

After his tragic murder those calls were heeded and Cole Park now hosts family nights during the summer where people come to watch movies and campout overnight. The playground area was rehabbed and the walking track upgraded. Now senior citizens use the track in the early morning, little league is played there and the famous basketball courts reopened and are a lot safer said Carolyn Wortham, the officer’s mother. “We want to make the park a part of my son’s legacy,” she said. “We have to engage young people in positive activities and teach them to respect life.” Since their son’s murder the Wortham family has been very active in trying to create strategies to reduce violent crime in the area. Last year the family settled a lawsuit against a pawn shop in Mississippi that sold the gun used in murdering their son. They said the stricter criteria agreed to by the shop’s owner could cut down on “straw purchases” where a legal buyer knowingly buys a gun for a person who otherwise would not legally be able to own one. Their daughter, Sandra Wortham ran for state representative and has been active with social organizations that are attempting to reduce violence. www.chicagocrusader.com

Harry C.Floyd Alford Marcus Floyd’s trial had been delayed several times due to his health. He was shot several times during the incident and suffered two heart attacks while in the hospital. In addition to Wortham’s murder, he was also convicted of attempted murder on the elder Wortham and murder in the death of his cousin. Illinois law allows for all parties who were involved in the commission of a violent crime to be charged when others are injured or killed regardless if they were the gunman. His attorney’s unsuccessfully attempted to argue their client was in no condition to stand trial due to injuries he suffered from the gun shots, which they said have damaged his cognitive skills. Marcus Floyd’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 17. He could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

But for me, I’ve been graced with a great family, with people that really have encouraged me rather than discouraged me. That’s what I want to do with the Why Not You Foundation and the ‘Pass the Peace’ initiative.”

charter schools. Started in 2013, the CPU parent coalition engages in charter school issues through local advocacy, public relations and public actions. The mission of CPU is to educate and mobilize parents to influence Chicago and Illinois communities to support the expansion and sustainability of quality public charter school seats.

Broke and unemployed, mother beats cancer (Continued from page 1) disease. Researchers say part of the problem is that Black women do not take precautions to halt the spread of the disease. While early detection has been known as the best solution to prevent death by breast cancer, Black women put themselves at risk by not visiting their doctor or getting mammograms and routine checkups. When Collins found the tumor in her breast, she began to worry about her life and taking care of her children. A biology teacher at Christ the King Jesuit College Prepatory in Bronzeville, Collins lost her job in September 2014 after being employed there for nearly three years. Three months after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Collins’ unemployment benefits ran out, leaving her without any income. “There were times when I didn’t have money for gas. When you’re broke and poor, you’re on your own.” Mentally, the next few months would be difficult for Collins. She would endure four aggressive chemotherapy treatments and would lose all of her hair, altering her appearance. Her two teenage sons would force her to wear a scarf around the house. “They couldn’t handle that. It was just too much for them,” Collins said. On her own, Collins could not handle the skyrocketing medical bills that piled up during her treatments. In addition to four chemo-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

therapy treatments, Collins had a double mastectomy, reconstruction, three MRIs, and several tests. Although Collins experienced minimal damage from Stage 2 breast cancer, she opted for a double mastectomy after doctors discovered that her genes did not produce enough protein to fight existing and future cancer cells. Collins said her doctor was also concerned about her father’s diagnosis of prostate cancer years before. The costs for treating breast cancer vary, depending on the type of drugs and surgery. The National Institute of Health states breast cancer patients pay on average $20,000 to $100,000. But in Collins’ case, the costs could soar around $100,000 for women undergoing multiple surgeries. More women with breast cancer are opting for a bilateral mastectomy—a surgery that removes both breasts. According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer was the largest medical cost in 2006 with Americans paying nearly $14 billion for treatments. Without her knowing it, Collins was prepared to handle most of her high medical bills. Two months before she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Collins qualified for Medicaid through her insurance provider, Family Health Care. Medicaid, the government assistance that provides free health care costs, took care of most of her medical bills. A cousin and a friend took turns cooking meals

and running errands while Collins was going through treatments. Despite her illness, Collins said she still drove her sons to school. Through her research, Collins was able to secure some donations from several organizations. While going through treatments, she raised $4,000 through the crowdfunding website gofundme.com. She also secured $500 from the Gene Roman Foundation—an organization dedicated to raising awareness and funding for women fighting breast cancer. Another organization, Cancer Care, gave $300. Recently, doctors told Collins that she was cancer-free. With little medical debt, Collins said she is fortunate and glad that she did not give up when she did not have any money to get treated. “I was prayerful and patient,” she said. “While I was worried, I had the mindset that I was already healed.” From her experience, Collins said she learned that Black breast cancer patients have a difficult time finding resources to help them fight the disease. “There are not enough resources for Black cancer patients,” she said. For help with breast cancer, patients can call the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship at 877-NCCS-YES (877-622-7937) or go to their website at www.canceradvocacy.org. One may also go to Medicaid’s toll-free Illinois hotline at 1-800842-1461.

EDITORIAL LAMAR ODOM BELLWETHER OF THE TIMES Former NBA star Lamar Joseph Odom was recently found unresponsive at Love Ranch, a brothel in Nevada. He apparently had OD’d, though it is not clear on what. He had cocaine in his system and also a variety of “herbal substances.” Odom is an American former professional basketball player who, as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association, won NBA championships in 2009 and 2010 and was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2011. At press time, he has come out of a life-threatening coma, but is not yet totally out of the proverbial woods. There may be some ongoing issues as a result of his near death experience. Lamar Odom reportedly grew up with a father who was a drug addict. His mother died of colon cancer when he was just 12-yearsold, and he was subsequently raised by his grandmother. Odom married Khloé Kardashian in 2009, but according to reports, the couple is estranged, and some observers are giving this as a reason for Odom’s forays into the world of drugs and prostitution. This may not be the case, though, because it has been said that he allegedly experimented with drugs and prostitution in the past. It has been reported that he spent $75,000 for what turned out to be a very unfortunate experience. Lamar Odom can arguably be seen as a bellwether, as an indicator of trends, as a vanguard of spiritual bankruptcy. It can be sensed in the winds of crass materialism and in the sinking into the depths of lust and unrighteousness that is gripping the planet; a wind that is not only sweeping the low ways and highways of America, but can be felt in the far reaches of the world. It is demonstrated by the abduction of African girls for the purpose of prostitution and slavery by Boko Haram; it is seen in the fundamentalism exhibited by teen girls who are willing to strap bombs to themselves for the purpose of unrelenting warfare led by Islamic fighters; it is seen in the United States in decaying urban ghettoes where Blacks kill Blacks and whites kill Blacks, as well as in the polished halls of Wall Street where greed rules. It can be seen in worldwide corruption. Now, to be sure, this is not to judge Mr. Odom. We are glad that he survived his harrowing ordeal and hope that he makes a speedy recovery. What he represents, however, is the idea that being rich and famous is not enough; money does not solve all problems, contrary to what some may believe. The $75,000 that he spent in that Nevada venue could have been put to much better use somewhere else than in the debauchery that resulted from his attempt to gain “paradise” in apparently the only way that he knew how. Recently, some high school teens were participating in what is called a “Peace Circle.” They identified topics that they wanted to address and then discussed them. Interestingly, the teens, seemingly without exception, could not think of anything to look forward to regarding pleasure other than sex and drugs. They could not be convinced that there are other, more positive avenues that can result in pleasurable experiences. These teens seem to be on the same page as the unfortunate Mr. Odom. For whatever reasons, with all of his success and fame, he had to sink to the lowest depths in his search for meaning; to find some semblance of happiness. And as it turned out, it almost killed him. And it is killing millions of people around the world who have not been able to see through the thick clouds of man-made oppression in order to see that there is a better way. This is why chaos is reigning on the planet. But as the saying goes, it is always darkest before dawn, and maybe, just maybe the pain that is visiting our world will ultimately wake us up so that we rise out of the ashes of agony to experience a new dawn of spiritual awareness. Until that time, however, there will be more people like Lamar Odom seeking to drown their pain in a “devil’s paradise” until the dawn arrives. Hopefully, it won’t be too late! A luta continua.

When we get past the mayor and the Chicago City Council, the rest of the politicians representing Chicago get by with very little scrutiny shined on them. That is until they do something really stupid, like embezzle money, or side with the wrong mayor. Well, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle just added a new layer to stupid moves amusement taxes. One of the areas she wants to tack on a new tax is golf. If she ever got away from her driver and fancy office she would know that a good number of golfers frequenting local courses are seniors on very fixed incomes. A 2 percent or 3 percent additional tax to golf might not seem like much to someone like Preckwinkle, who hauls in a $170,000 every year, but to the retiree surviving solely on Social Security those extra dollars are a wallop to the wallet. I guess she is pushing this increase, thinking the city’s proposed property tax increase will give her some cover. She is wrong. She picked the wrong time and the wrong things to try to slap another tax on. Maybe she didn’t have any competition in the last election, but if she keeps up this kind of mess she will have people lined up

Boycotting Christmas makes no sense Dear Editor: I am not sure whether this is a real movement or just wild gossip, but I keep hearing talk about Black people boycotting Christmas. At one point someone connected it with Minister Louis Farrakhan, and I really hope that part is not true. Seems like our people are quick the last several years to call for boycotts of this or that. I guess they are thinking that since the Montgomery Bus Boycott worked any boycott by Black men and women will work. That thinking is very flawed for several reasons including: no Black business could be harmed by a boycott then, there was a clear outcome that could be realized through a

boycott, and Black people and our sympathizers were prepared to keep the boycott going as long as necessary. With this recent talk about a shopping boycott around Christmas it is not clear who would benefit, or what the outcome can be. No one seems to be addressing the issue that a boycott would negatively impact employment for the thousands and thousands of Black people who get seasonal (Continued on page 15)

COMMENTARY

The Great Bill Crawford – Part I Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford On Friday, September 25, 2015 America lost a special leader. I have had the pleasure of working with three of America’s great leaders. Parren J. Mitchell, who brilliantly chaired the Small Business Committee on Capitol Hill – DC. Virtually every substantive minority business program today was evolved from the work of Mr. Mitchell. We haven’t had an equal in Congress since he retired. Arthur A. Fletcher worked his wonders serving under four Republican presidents (Nixon, Ford, Reagan and the George Herbert Walker Bush). He is rightfully known as “The Father of Affirmative Action.” He contributed a lot to the ending of segregation and the explosion of integration via administrative rules and the convincing of the presidents he served. The last “champion of economic equity” in Black communities was the Honorable State Representative Bill Crawford. Bill worked at the state level and that state was none other than Indiana. Many don’t know that when Bill was growing up Indianapolis was as segregated as anywhere in the South (schools, movie theaters, amusement parks,

Harry C. Alford etc.). Upon the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bill dedicated himself to fighting for change – a better life for Black Indiana. I first met Bill Crawford upon my appointment as Deputy Commissioner for Minority Business Development by Governor Evan Bayh. He was rather cold to me at first because the Legislative Black Caucus urged the Governor to appoint another person. It was very clear that I was on the “spot” and had to prove my worth quickly. I met the caucus members and other Black leaders throughout the state. I proclaimed that a new day was dawning in the Hoosier State. All state offices would

begin doing business with minority owned businesses like never before. Things started turning around quickly. The state went from 0.5% minority business participation to 6% within 18 months. It covered all industries and professions. Harry C. Alford was becoming a “hero’ but more importantly I proved my worth to Bill Crawford, who was passionate about this area and certainly a very important and powerful leader. Before long, Bill and I became more than friends. We were more like partners in the movement for economic equity. A big turning point came when Bill invited me to one of the weekly Saturday meetings of the Concerned Clergy. This was a group of influential Black ministers who would meet and create strategy. They were missing an economic component and Bill nominated me as the Chair of the Economic Committee. I would give a weekly report and we would strategize on how to deal with any particular situation. This was power! Here’s an example of the effectiveness of the Concerned Clergy. I reported that the two electrical companies in our marketing area were in noncompliance with the U.S. General Service Administration. Each

utility company in the United States is to send an annual Small and Disadvantaged Business Plan. The plan would discuss reasonable minority business goals and how the utility was going to attain the goals and show the performance achieved from the previous plan. Indianapolis Power and Light and Indiana Power were simply ignoring the required reports. Two things came out of my report. The scandal hit the front page of the Indianapolis Star newspaper. Then, Concerned Clergy President Rev. C.V. Jeter summoned the CEO’s of the two electrical companies to come and explain themselves. At the time, Jim Rogers was President of Indiana Power. He later would become CEO of the mighty Duke Energy. IPL sent their number two person, former Deputy Mayor Joe Slash. Both companies came in apologetic and went over the status of the minority business procurement. It was paltry and rather painful. Reverend Jeter would then ask “How are you going to correct this and how long will it take?” They committed to a reasonable time table. Rev. Jeter ended the session by saying, “You are to report to Harry Alford and he will let us know when you have improved to reason-

able levels.” Within two weeks my local chamber was engaged with the two companies and also received sponsorships from them for our annual event. The newspaper reporter was fired and run out of town (that stuff would happen in Indy). Black business with the two firms rose significantly. In sum, we were on to something here. Change could be made with proper strategy and organization. From that point on, the relationship with Bill Crawford and me became tight. My fledgling Hoosier Minority Chamber of Commerce was endorsed and backed by the Concerned Clergy and Indianapolis state representatives and city council members. It became apparent that all of the racial ills, from a business perspective, would be lined up and knocked down one struggle at a time. Feeling confident, I left my state job and Kay and I would live off her salary at the Hoosier Lottery and whatever donations our local chamber would receive. Indiana was about to change. Grading the Democratic Debate By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist The first debate among Democrats seeking to succeed Barack Obama as president may have been the first time a group of national politicians bragged on television about getting a failing grade. Speaking in the third person, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders began the show-and-tell by saying in reply to a question from moderator Anderson Cooper regarding his record on guns, “Let’s begin, Anderson, by understanding that Bernie Sanders has a D-minus voting rating from the NRA.” Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, directing his remarks to Sanders, said, “And I have an F from the NRA.” Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee didn’t have to brag about his grade when it was his turn. Anderson Cooper did it for him: “Gov. Chafee, you have an F-rating from the NRA...” Cooper also said, “Let me bring in somebody who has a different viewpoint. Senator Webb, your rating from the NRA, you once had an A-rating from the NRA...” One of the problems with the debate was there was so much www.chicagocrusader.coM

George E. Curry back-and-forth on how the National Rifle Association graded the presidential candidates and zero emphasis on the grades they received on issues of primary importance to Blacks. The NAACP has been compiling legislative report cards since 1914. It explains, “The NAACP Civil Rights Legislative Report Card demonstrates how every Member of Congress voted on the bread and butter civil rights issues and priorities important to the NAACP.” Sanders, the only Democratic candidate running for president who is still serving in Congress, consistently earned an A, voting

with the NAACP’s position on legislative bills 100 percent of the time in each of the four grading periods he has been in the U.S. Senate. Former First Lady Hillary Clinton, who served as a senator from New York from 2001-2009, also earned straight-As from the NAACP in each full term in the Senate. She voted with the NAACP 100 percent of the time during the 110th Congress, her last before being appointed Secretary of State by President Obama, 96 percent in the 109th Congress, 100 percent in the 108th and 97 percent in the 107th Congress, her first full term. Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee - who has been a Republican, an Independent and now a Democrat - has been at the opposite end of the spectrum. Serving in the Senate at roughly the same time as Clinton, he earned Fs in every complete session except the 109th Congress when he received a C. He typically voted with the NAACP only 42 to 51 percent of the time. In the debate, Anderson Cooper reminded Jim Webb, who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense and Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan: “...in 2006, you called affirmative action ‘state-sponsored

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

racism.’ In 2010, you wrote an op/ed saying it discriminated against whites. Given that nearly half of the Democratic Party is non-white, aren’t you out of step with where the Democratic Party is now?” Webb tried to defend his remark by saying, “I have always supported affirmative action for African Americans. That’s the way the program was originally designed because of their unique history in this country, with slavery and the Jim Crow laws that followed.” Webb is the most conservative Democrat running for president. NAACP report cards for the period he served in Congress were not immediately available. When O’Malley was reminded by Sanders that he hadn’t served in Congress, O’Malley retorted, “Well, maybe that’s a healthy thing.” CNN gets an unhealthy F when graded on including diverse voices in the questioning of the candidates. For the most part, it was left up to Don Lemon, the Black guy, to raise the “Black question,” though he asked a couple of others, and the Latino guy, Juan Carlos Lopez, to raise the immigration question. Fielding questions from thousands of viewers via Facebook, the first question Lemon allowed to be asked was perhaps the most

feeble of the night: “My question for the candidates is, do Black lives matter, or do all lives matter?” Was that the best question Lemon could find? When he got his turn, Juan Carlos Lopez’s questioning was pointed: “Senator Sanders, in 2013, you voted for immigration reform. But in 2007, when Democrats controlled Congress and the Bush White House was onboard, you voted against it. Why should Latino voters trust you when you left them at the altar at the moment when reform was very close?” It is evident that when it comes to the media - and these presidential debates in particular - Black questions matter. COMMENTARY

1983 AND THE INVASION OF GRENADA

Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill

Given the current media attention being shown to the war against terrorism, African people should not forget significant events in our history. One of the events we should not forget is the United States invasion of the island of Grenada. The Caribbean island of Grenada has virtually been banned from international news coverage. It was thirty years ago that Grenada was a major international news item as a result of the United States’ invasion of this African island of 110,000 people on October 25, 1983. The headlines of the October 26, 1983 issue of the New York Times was the following: “1,900 U.S. Troops, With Caribbean Allies, Invade Grenada And Fight Leftist Units; Moscow Protest; British Are Critical.” Just as we observe the United States destabilization tactics in the Middle East today, these were the same tactics used in Grenada thirty years ago. These tactics go something like this: Since the African people cannot govern and rule themselves; we must come to their aid in a humanitarian manner. We must provide them with food and other necessities of life. We must identify or create allies among the African people and create an at-

mosphere of support for the efforts of the United States to bring peace, harmony, and stability to the African people. Does this sound familiar? Obviously, the majority of the people in the Middle East oppose these tactics and are rebelling against them, just as the people of Grenada resisted the United States invasion twenty years ago. I began writing my weekly column thirty years ago because of what we, in the National Black United Front (NBUF), observed as the continuing white supremacy policies of the United States toward Grenada, the New Jewel Movement and its leader Maurice Bishop. This is what I wrote in my first column that appeared in the Chicago Defender on October 24, 1983: “The Black Liberation Movement worldwide is deeply saddened by the death of Grenada’s Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop. Mr. Bishop, along with other Grenadian officials, including Education Minister, Jacqueline Creft, Housing Minister, Norris Bain, Unision Whiteman, a former foreign minister, Secretary of Home Affairs, Vincent Noel and union leader Fitzroy Bain were killed by the new army forces on October 19 in a demonstration to free hundreds of

Grenadians who were arrested because of their support for Mr. Bishop. These supporters had been placed in detention in Fort Rupert Army Headquarters, named after Rupert Bishop, Maurice’s father.” As I continued to write in this first column— “This Caribbean identity simply means the interconnectedness of the African experience that resulted in millions of African people being captured and brought to this region of the world during the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade of the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries.” Further, as I explained in this column, “This area of the world is predominately African and the people in it have been struggling against white domination in an effort to achieve independence and sovereignty. Grenada under the leadership of Maurice Bishop was a shining example of an African government and nation seeking independence and sovereignty.” There are many lessons that the invasion of Grenada taught us. Lessons that continue to plague the worldwide African Liberation Movement that are steeped in the efforts of the white supremacy forces to always find some African person or persons

to keep us divided and fighting each other, rather than focusing on and fighting the real enemy. In the case of Grenada, an African man who Maurice Bishop had practiced law with and became the Deputy Prime Minister, was the chief architect of Maurice Bishop’s and the New Jewel Movement’s overthrow that provided the open door for the United States’ invasion of the island. As I wrote thirty years ago in my first column, and as so many had stated before me, “The real question for the Black Liberation Movement worldwide is when will we stop killing each other over political disputes? This was clearly a political dispute between different forces within the New Jewel Movement. All factions had pledged a commitment to bring about change for the people of the island, and Bishop was beginning to bring about that change as the popular outpouring of support for him during the fighting intensified. Did someone want that change to stop?” In the same context I wrote— “One thing is certain, African Movement forces must find political solutions to political disputes. Killing each other is not the answer to chang(Continued on page 15)

THE DEMOCRATIC DEBATE AND RACE – ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist In contrast to the most entertaining Republican Presidential candidate debate, the first Democratic Presidential candidate debate was more absorbing. We heard from grownups that refrained from personal attacks and offered solid information about their positions. While there were mild fireworks, there was much gravitas, and the sagacity with which these candidates discussed issues was most welcome. Hillary Rodham Clinton was gracious, graceful, firm and focused. She was the best I’ve seen her since she gave her incandescent speech at the 2008 Democratic Convention in Denver. Martin O’Malley missed his chance to shine. He seemed stiff and though he also seemed thoroughly prepared, he did not stand out. Senator Lincoln Chafee might as well have stayed home. The dog ate my homework is not a credible defense for voting to repeal Glass-Steagall, the legislation that regulated banks in some of their activities. He says it was his first vote, and his dad had just died. With all due sympathy, that’s no excuse. Finally we have “Whining Jim Webb” who complained that he 6

was not getting enough time. But he spent too much time saying he wasn’t getting equal time, and he did not jump in, as others did, to make his point. As CNN’s Anderson Cooper (who did a great job) correctly pointed out, Webb agreed to the rules in advance. And, really, had he equal time, what would he have said, and who would be interested? Bottom line, Webb and Chafee should go away, but they won’t. The real contrast is between Hillary and Bernie, with O’Malley, seemingly running for Vice-President, adding occasional spark to the fire. In response to the question, “Do Black lives matter, or do all lives matter? Senator Bernie Sanders was the only one who uttered the words, “institutional racism.” Whatever the Black Lives Matter team said to him back in August, it took. He invoked Sandra Bland, the woman who supposedly hung herself in Texas, and talked about mass incarceration. O’Malley and Clinton addressed the issue as well, with the acceptable answers that included police reform, education and mass incarceration. Clinton suggested a “new deal” for communities of color, but time prevented her from offering details. Neither Clinton nor O’Malley suggested that institutional racism had anything to do with the Black Lives

Dr. Julianne Malveaux Matter movement or the racial disparities that exist in our nation. Unless I missed something (I watched the debate twice and went through the transcript), Chafee did not address the issue. Whining Webb cited his work with African American veterans, which included defending a Marine who was convicted of murder and clearing his name. He also fought to include an African American soldier on the Mall. Great work, but where is the public policy? The fact that Bernie Sanders mentioned institutional racism is signifi-

cant. While as many as three-quarters of African Americans vote for Democrats, it is not clear that our Democratic allegiance is returned. In the Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton talked about the role entrepreneurship plays in empowering people in our nation. Did she (or any of the other candidates) know that the Democratic National Committee spent only 1.7% of the $500 million spent on consulting went to minorityowned businesses? African American support of the Democratic Party is not reflected in the dollars the DNC chooses to invest in our community. Black lives matter, and so do black dollars. African Americans have twice the unemployment rates of whites, earn less regardless of education and occupation, have a fraction of the wealth, and less homeownership. We are 13 percent of the population, but half of those incarcerated. Institutional racism is alive and well, but only one Democratic candidate for President chose to mention that. Some will say that Clinton and O’Malley alluded to institutional racism, but the concept has to be embraced, not simply alluded to. When people understand the concept of institutional racism, it allows them to work to dismantle it. Otherwise, we get a tepid response to racial injustices and ignorant atti-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

tudes about African American incarceration. Haven’t you heard some white person say they didn’t own any slaves, without understanding that slavery’s aftermath can be seen in disparity data? Union folks forget that African American people were systematically excluded from their unions, used as strikebreakers until a few decades ago. Others forget the advantages they gained because institutional racism dictated African American exclusion. Race matters are not the only matters that the Democratic nominee for President must deal with. But those Democrats who take African American fealty for granted must understand that they have to give as much as they get. If about 25% of all Democrats are African American, shouldn’t we get 25% of the dollars that the DNC spends? I am glad that Bernie Sanders raised the issue of institutional racism. I am wondering if the DNC and others will address the issue by doing a better job of distributing contracts and opportunities to minority-owned businesses. My mother used to say, “How can white folk lose when whites are for whites and blacks are for whites. They can’t lose.” If ever there was an example, it’s disgraced former Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett. She willingly allowed herself to be a tool of the white power structure. Everyone knows the Cleveland native was hired as CEO to be the black face to close 49 of the city’s neighborhood public schools in predominantly African American communities, the same as her predecessor— Jean Claude Brizard. Both of them were hired because they’re black and had no local ties to the South and West Sides of the city. This method of using black people to fool, control or harm other black people is nothing new. For centuries, the relationship between our nation’s white power structure and black people continues to be, “I can buy me a black person.” Instead of buying us from atop an auction block, today, they buy us to do their bidding with jobs, contracts or a title. I call it the “In The Room Syndrome.” Some of us are so happy to be in the room rubbing shoulders with the rich and/or powerful, after being denied access for so long, that we will do whatever it takes to maintain our spot. Now, I realize that everyone has to put food on his or her table, but it should not be at the expense of those who need an advocate the most. When the Walter H. Dyett High School protestors ended their hunger strike, earlier this month, some observers and detractors admonished them for not doing a “happy dance” when the administration announced the shuttered building would reopen as a neighborhood school. Never mind that no one from CPS ever talked to the protestors about the school’s future. For five years, some of the protestors diligently worked in tan-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Delmarie Harry C. Alford Cobb dem with the University of Illinois and community residents to create a 500-page plan for Dyett to remain an open enrollment, public high school specializing in Global Leadership and Green Technology. Instead, in what is being promoted as a compromise, the last neighborhood high school in Bronzeville will re-open with an arts curriculum. Hunger striker and Bronzeville resident Cathy Dale said, “We want to create a world-class institution that’s sustainable.” In other words, prepare the new Dyett students in the areas of the economy where experts predict growth for sustainable employment. Something former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke agrees is needed to help working families share in the nation’s prosperity. “We need better training and skills to get people prepared so they can compete in the global economy,” said Bernanke on “ABC This Week.” In yet another compromise, the University of Chicago and Sinai Health System announced construction of a Level 1 Trauma Center at Holy Cross Hospital on the city’s Southwest Side. This agreement is the result of years of protests by a myriad of groups— doctors, students, activists and residents. It’s another example of Chicagoans pushing back against the white power structure that purports to know what’s best for Black and Brown residents who

live in a trauma desert even though they are the disproportionate victims of traumatic incidents. Again, no one from the city sat down with the protestors to say, “How do we work together to ensure this collaboration best addresses the needs of our city?” The admission of guilt by Barbara Byrd Bennett managed to knock off another city appointee from the headlines. Since Superintendent Garry McCarthy assumed leadership of the Chicago Police Department hundreds of people have been killed and thousands shot. In what has become a rare sight, the City Council Black Caucus held a news conference calling for McCarthy’s dismissal. Both he and the mayor rebuffed the black aldermen’s demand. “My focus…and I want everyone’s focus…is on gangs and guns, not on Garry,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. For each of these examples, there were black people defending the status quo. Some even reprimanded protestors for daring to challenge the city’s white power structure. Just six months ago, Emanuel told black Chicagoans he would listen, if only we would re-elect him. So far, he has said NO to an elected school board, NO to the Dyett protestors, NO to the City Council Black Caucus and ignored the trauma center activists. In an 1857 speech former slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” He was foretelling the role of blacks in the Civil War. The most famous line from the speech is, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” With freedom comes responsibility. The responsibility to know your worth and to make the white power structure work to improve your quality of life, not maintain the status quo—no matter what color the face is looking at you. Barbara Byrd Bennett didn’t betray us by herself. She had help. She was not alone in the room.

BUSINESS

Redlining Black America By Charlene Crowell The old adage, ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’ seems somehow an apt description for what a growing number of communities are suffering: a lack of fair lending. In recent weeks and in varying locales, the issue of redlining has led to lawsuits that have been challenged or settlements that avoided courtroom dramas. Regardless of locale, allegations are remarkably similar: lack of access in mortgage lending coupled with a lack of convenient access to full-service banking. On September 24, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Department of Justice jointly ordered Hudson City Savings Bank to pay a total of $32.75 million. Of these funds, $25 million will be dedicated to subsidizing increased mortgage opportunity for Blacks and Latino neighborhoods, $5.5 million paid in penalties, and $2.25 million for outreach and community programs in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and both New York City and Staten Island. Although the Equal Credit Op-

portunity Act bans businesses from discriminating against applicants in credit transactions on the basis of race, color or national origin, 94 percent of Hudson City’s branches were in areas with scant consumers of color. Further, 94.5 percent of the bank’s top 50 brokers’ offices were concentrated outside of minority communities. In Philadelphia and in Camden, none of the bank’s 47 loan officers were based in Black and Latino areas. “Hudson City Savings Bank structured its business operations to systemically avoid providing credit services in predominantly minority neighborhoods,” said U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman of the District of New Jersey. “There is no room for such behavior in our banking system.” Nor is Hudson City Savings alone. Just a few days later on September 29, another Justice Department settlement noted redlining in the St. Louis area by Eagle Bank and Trust. Citing both the Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, a $975,000 settlement will now open two new locations in northern St. Louis among other changes.

Harry C.Crowell Alford Charlene The next day, September 30, a federal judge in Chicago denied efforts by HSBC Holdings to stop a fair housing lawsuit brought by Cook County in Illinois. On behalf of its citizens, Cook County charged that foreclosures dating to the late 2000s were the result of steering minority borrowers into high-cost loans even when their credit profiles made them eligible for cheaper

loans offered to whites. In his decision, U.S. District Judge John Z. Lee wrote, “These discriminatory actions increased the minority borrowers’ risk of default and foreclosure, resulting in a rash of foreclosures in the county, which in turn caused economic and noneconomic injury to the county.” HSBC must now decide whether to appeal the denial, defend its actions in court or broker a settlement with Cook County. In yet another case in Buffalo, NY, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman secured an $825,000 agreement with Evans Bank to end its discriminatory redlining that denied services to the largely Black east side of the city. In this action, Evans Bank was found to use a lending map that excluded Black consumers while including neighboring communities. It also disqualified east side mortgage applicants regardless of their creditworthiness. The largest portion of settlement funds - $475,000 – will be used to create a Housing Opportunity Fund to support development and restoration of affordable housing. Remaining monies will be dedicated to marketing

and advertising to communities of color ($200,000), a special financing program to increase lending activity in underserved areas ($100,000), and payment of fees and costs to the state ($50,000). In recent months, even more similar legal actions have been filed; but the pattern should be clear: communities of color often lack access to mortgages and/or fair credit. Artificially raising the cost of the single largest investment most consumers make is just as harmful as the failure to approve mortgages to creditworthy borrowers. The moral to this continuing saga is that once laws have been passed to correct discriminatory lending, vigorous enforcement will make those laws real for consumers and lenders alike. “Without access to affordable credit, neighborhoods deteriorate in the long shadow cast by unfair lending,” said Richard Cordray, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. IMPACT redirects student service to environment

Mount Carmel High School Freshmen students participated in a week long service learning program, IMPACT, aimed at heightening the Catholic and Carmelite identity and Mission, as well as expanding service learning opportunities for students to express their faith in action. “The theme of the week’s excursions was to focus on the gift of God’s creation and the responsibility to care for and maintain the integrity of that gift,” said Mr. John Stimler, principal of Mount Carmel. “Students learned about the need to take responsibility for the resources we have been given, while engaged in a variety of environmental-related service projects and learning experiences.” The freshmen began their week outside of the classroom hiking and removing litter in nearby Jackson Park, and touring the restoration that is taking place at the Japanese Garden and Wooded Island. The rest of the week was spent at various sites across the

city and suburbs, including Indiana Dunes, Eggers Forest Preserve, Chicago Park District and the Garfield Park Conservatory. The week concluded with an allclass retreat day, consisting of reflection and a class liturgy.

“What I think the students gained from this experience is a raised consciousness and stronger relationship with the environment,” said John Haggerty, IMPACT coordinator and Vice President of Mission Effectiveness at Mount Carmel. “Students and faculty worked together and spent over 2,000 hours at various volunteer sites.” This week was the first of three IMPACT weeks that Mount Carmel students will take part in this year. The sophomores will participate February 29 – March 4 and focus on the theme of hunger and poverty. The juniors will participate January 25 - 29 and focus on the dignity of the

Murray Language Academy student to raise 10,000 toys Sam Love picks up major support By Chinta Strausberg For his fourth annual disaster relief Christmas toy drive, 11-year-old Sam Love, a 6th grade student at Murray Language Academy, announced Friday, October 16, which cities will received the 10,000 toys and gift cards he plans to raise thanks to some major supporters. Walt Whitman, CEO, Soul Children of Chicago, is backing Sam in a very big way. “The Soul Children and Sam are going to do something later on in a concert to help him generate more toys. We’re working on a partnership.” Pamela Blackman, who was accompanied by Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose’s 3-year-old son, PJ Rose, said she too is supporting Sam’s toy drive. “When I saw Sam on Anderson Cooper’s show four-years ago, I was so touched that he at that young age was willing to provide Christmas for victims of the tsunami…. I gave Sam an iPad because I was so touched that he at 8 years old was so selfless to give. More people at our age should be so giving. I am very proud and supportive of Sam” The young humanitarian also gain-

ed additional support that he hopes will make his goal become a reality. Joining Sam at a press conference at his school were his father, Victor Love; his pastor, Rev. Keith Williams; Murray principal Greg Mason; his assistant principal, Rhonda Butler; Pamela Blackman and her 3-year-old grandson, P.J. Rose – the son of Chicago Bulls super star Derrick Rose; Felix LeShey, Sam’s Club manager; Soul Children CEO Walt Whitman; Wallace Goode of the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce; Christian Powell, representative for Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Epsilon Chapter and Diamond Arrington, a sophomore and vice president at the Lindblom Math and Science Academy. The guests were introduced by National Junior Honor Society members Mia Grover, 13, an eighth grader, and Glenn Dillard, 13, also an eighth grader. “We believe in the efforts that Sam has brought to Murray,” said a proud Mason who supports Sam’s spirit of charity. “Here is a young man at a very young age who three-years ago made a commitment to charity, and our school is built on those same principles. We believe in charity, in goodwill and humanitarianism and those principles he believes in fit into what we do as educators every day.

safety officials will bring together a community coalition to act as a policy task force to review local policies and ordinances; discuss the issues that teens face behind the wheel; and make recommendations to the community in order to strengthen local efforts. SADD and its partners believe that this program, when duplicated across the country, will move the needle in creating real and lasting change. SADD is proud to be at the forefront of this national effort to save lives. “We know that car crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for young people in this country. SADD and its partners believe that the best response to this community health crisis is a comprehensive community approach. We are proud to partner with the National Sheriff ’s Association (NSA) and the National

Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said Dawn Teixeira, SADD President and CEO. “We are very excited to bring so many high-school aged youth together to learn about the dangers of distracted driving,” noted Robyn Block, Illinois SADD State Coordinator. “One of the best things about DomeShift is that we are giving teens the skills to take back to their schools and communities, and to use what they learn on social media. As a result, countless teens and adults will benefit.” The highlight of the event is the annual march to the state capitol, which is planned for Tuesday, October 27, at 12 p.m. All 250 teens and advisors will wear matching shirts. The DomeShift event will culminate with a rally and group photo on the east side of the Capitol, at the Abraham Lincoln statue.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Jesus—the Center of it all. I truly believe it’s all about Christ being front and center in all things point blank period. God is looking for someone who is available to give Him glory in the earth realm. It’s not about your ability to sing, preach, pray or whatever you do, but rather your availability for the assignment God has for you. Your life and His plan for you are totally in His hand. Furthermore, your faith, prayer and salvation is all contingent upon God’s grace. We can do nothing without God. Even in our prayers we should be mindful not to give excessive or flashy words just for show. Eloquence of speech and long prayers does not impress Jesus. Matthew 6:7 states “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.” Long and powerful prayers do not move God. It’s faith that gets his attention, because without faith, it is impossible to please Him. God already knows what you need before you utter one word. If our

Effie Rolfe blessings were based on what we did or do, there would be no reason for Jesus dying on the cross or for his resurrection. It’s about the love He has for you and your belief that His love is enough. We must be confident that strong faith in a weak plank will get you wet. But weak faith in a strong plank will get you across the ocean to your des-

tiny. Jesus is the strong plank and He knows we are fragile. His only request is that we have a little faith the size of a grain of a mustard seed. Actually, all the faith you need is equivalent to about 5 grains of sand. How tiny is that? Not much. God wants to know that you trust Him with your whole heart. When it comes to church, some of us never miss a service. Maybe you’ve read the Bible cover to cover for the 15th time. And to top it off, you are in ten different ministries, as well as the #1 tither. Praise God for all that you do! It’s still not about your works. Remember, salvation is not about your works or how much you do. (Ephesians 2:9) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” According to one of my favorite songs, “It’s not you—it’s all about Jesus.” It must be about God’s unwavering love and His sufficient grace towards you. Don’t get me wrong, you need to attend church service at a Bible teaching and God-filled church. Also, reading

the Word each day is great, but the minute you misconstrue what you did for what God has already done, then the focus is on your works and not His love. Paul told the Galatians ‘you did run well, but who did hinder you that you would not obey the truth. A little leaven leavens the whole lump (Galatians 5:9). When you think some of your works will get God’s attention versus His love for you alone, then it’s about you and not Him. It must be one or the other. I choose God’s love. All or nothing – God is jealous. He wants all or nothing at all. People demand the same from others they love. You want all of your husband’s heart and soul. You want your wife to be totally devoted to you—nothing less will do. All relationships parent, friendships, married or dating requires the same stipulations…so why try to undermind God? He wants all of your heart. If it was just works, the rich young ruler would have been the prime candidate. However, Jesus wanted more…his heart. When Jesus asked him to give his riches to the poor, well, that was the end of

that story. The guy refused to let go of his material wealth instead he turned and walked away (Mark 10:21-22). It’s been said Jesus really didn’t want him to give everything away, but wanted to see if he was willing to be obedient. Guess what, he wasn’t. What he didn’t know is this was only a test. He got an ‘F’ for effort. Jesus was only testing his motive just as Abraham was tested with his son, Isaac (Genesis 22). Thankfully through faith, Abraham aced the test. Are you willing to give a Holy God what matters most? Your heart! Making Jesus center of your life is truly a heart thing. Without Him—our lives are unclean and liken to filthy rags… (Isaiah 64:4). Who’s at the center of your heart…? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. THE BOOKWORM SEZ “Prince of Darkness: The Untold Story of Jeremiah Hamilton, Wall Street’s First Black Millionaire”

By Shane White c.2015, Palgrave McMillan $27.99 / $32.50 Canada 368 pages Your numbers weren’t picked last night. Ah, another worthless lottery ticket. No shopping spree or mortgage payoff for you. You’ll have to go to work and get your incredible wealth just like everybody else. Or, as you’ll read in “Prince of Darkness” by Shane White, you could become rich the old-fashioned way: through grift. Though he showed up in New York City in the wake of scandal, nobody knew for sure where Jeremiah G. Hamilton had come from. Some sources said he was born in the Caribbean - which he admitted to, but he also claimed Richmond, Virginia, as his first home. Nobody knew, though, because Hamilton, an African Amer-

racism. He died in 1875 in a “comfortable and elegant” residence he shared with his white wife and family. So why are history books silent on Hamilton’s story? That’s a question author Shane White had, after he discovered Hamilton’s name and began digging. Could it have been due to the color of Hamilton’s skin? It’s possible, White says, but in “Prince of Darkness,” he also indicates that the lack of documentation may’ve been because Hamilton rankled white financiers and investors, and didn’t appear to care that he’d done so. That insouciance, in light of the racism that Hamilton surely endured, would be an interesting story itself but White embellishes the tale with an abundance of history and extensive biographies of other influential people of Hamilton’s time. That’s good – to a point – but it occasionally can also make this book deadly dull. I found my mind wandering much more than I might’ve liked. So is this book worth reading? I think so, but you may want to give it a rest now and then to regenerate yourself. Start it, take a break, repeat as necessary and you might find “Prince of Darkness” to be just the ticket.

ican man, spent most of his adult life hiding facts and creating fiction. Wherever he got his start, Hamilton launched himself early: in 1828, and “barely into his twenties,” he was involved in a counterfeit scam in Haiti that would’ve meant death, had he been caught. With the help of locals, however, he escaped and arrived in “Gotham,” but not without notice: newspapers of the day splashed the story, but Hamilton managed to keep mum on who’d helped him. Almost immediately, he started borrowing money in a “frenetic, almost desperate” way, money he had no intention of paying back, which ultimately landed Hamilton in court: there were at least ten lawsuits against him between 1830 and 1835, and there may’ve been more. Then came The Great Fire of 1835 in which “dozens of acres” of Manhattan were burned to the ground, along with the records of several businessmen who’d been convinced to invest with him. Hamilton denied the transactions, kept their $25,000, and gained the moniker of “Prince of Darkness.” For the rest of his life – even after being forced to declare bankruptcy - Hamilton always landed on his feet, “shunned” other African Americans, and even invested in companies that overtly practiced

$3.6 million raised at Angel Ball 2015 (Cont’d from page 12) Show and MSNBC. Nick Cannon presented the “Angel of Light” honor to his friend and “America’s Got Talent” co-host Heidi Klum, where he made note that Klum is a woman who is “beautiful inside and out.” In her acceptance speech, Klum dedicated her honor to those fighting to

beat cancer. “This one’s for you. I’m just going to keep it at my house because it’s so pretty,” Klum said with a smile. Simon de Pury orchestrated the live auction. Highlights included a 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 that was on display outside the event, which sold for $125,000; a stunning pair

of Lorraine Schwartz black and rose gold sapphire earrings, modeled by musician and actress Kat Graham, that sold for $70,000; and a 6-day Caribbean cruise on a luxury yacht that sold for $140,000. As dessert was served, LaBelle took to the stage singing “You Saved My Life.” The crowd leapt to their feet and hit the

as it sounds, given that Motley is in a country that is slowly but surely supposed to be getting back to securing themselves, with the United States pulling out after more than a dozen years of fighting. On the other hand, some of Motley’s clients are foreigners in Kabul, like the contractor from South Africa who had been imprisoned, along with a few others, on drug charges. After having spent about six years in jail, Motley started working on the contractor’s case. He essentially should have been released, but legal mumbo jumbo kept him imprisoned. Motley’s patience is tested, as she deals

with the Afghan officials in this case. She keeps insisting that paperwork has been filed, only to finally figure out, I suppose, that the prosecutor’s office wants to be paid off. The client refuses to pay any money, as he suspects the other men arrested in this case have done. Finally, after what seems like exhaustive wrangling, the client is released and heads straight back home to South Africa. “Motley’s Law” shows the commitment of Atty. Motley, even learning the Sharia legal system and studying the Koran. “I use their laws, and every case that I have tried in Afghanistan, I have won.”

As she vows to change the Afghan legal system and defend U.S. and European citizens amid dangerous circumstances and threats of her own assassination, she must also struggle to balance the needs of her husband and three children a world away in the United States. She said that she wants her children to be vested, not only in their communities, but globally. “I want them to use their talents in result-oriented ways to help those people now and in the future.” She even serves as head of a traditional Jirga, or extra-judicial proceeding, involving elders in a refugee camp, to release a father from an entangled deal that required him

to surrender his 6-year-old daughter in marriage to pay off a debt that he had with a man. The circumstances surrounding the Jirga and the settlement of the debt were inaccurately reported, Motley says, by the New York Times in 2013. She was livid, because she felt that the authenticity of the Jirga was being questioned, simply because she was named the authoritative head, as opposed to an Afghan. She was also irritated because she felt that certain women’s rights groups were trying to use her to herald their causes, but not really supporting this interest with any financial help. The documentary also shows Motley’s trips back to Wisconsin to see her family and Skype sessions between herself and her family members. One such trip is necessitated because her husband is shot in the face, while someone attempted to carjack him, as he made a trip to Milwaukee for a class reunion.

The documentary shows the pain and anguish that Motley—who is half AfricanAmerican and half North Korean—experiences as she laments the fact that she faced more danger and threatening situations in Kabul, but her husband, in fact, ends up a victim. Shortly after this incident, Motley travels to Uganda to help people in another legally repressed area on another continent. When she went to Uganda, she went not knowing anyone there. “I wanted to go to Africa, but I wanted to go where I didn’t know anyone. And people starting calling me from all around. This was so overwhelming for Motley. “The people also were so nice and friendly and welcomed me ‘back home’,” she said. She didn’t stop there, and, consequently, Motley has clients in Uganda, Bolivia, Cuba, Ghana, Australia, Dubai, the United Kingdom, Afghanistan and (Continued on page 16)

her around. But she doesn’t seem to be fazed, and her work goes on. “I just want to be a lawyer and bring honor back to the legal profession,” she said. Motley helps one lady who was sentenced to more than five years, because her husband was going to force her to have sex with just any random guy, and after her husband tried to strangle her into the decision, the 18-year-old woman ran away. She was found and some frivolous charges were levied against her. However, Motley met with her and petitioned the court for her charges to be dropped. It’s never as simple

The smarter thing to push for from my perch is to encourage Black people to spend their holiday dollars with Black stores, restaurants and other Black-owned businesses. I have a site called Bean Soup Times that list several Black-owned businesses that we need to patronize. We definitely need to get into the habit of buying Black as much as possible rather than spending time and brain cells on

tainly do not trust Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposal for a garbage collection fee. What has the man promised the citizens that he has lived up to? He always gives about 75-80 percent of what he says residents will get and then tries to run some okeydoke like he never promised the rest. Remember how much the city was supposedly going to save from the school closings? You can bet that if we do get a garbage collection fee, the mayor then will want to charge us for having the blue, and black garbage and recycling containers. Then there will be a square footage charge for how much space they take up in the alley. The problem is that he can probably get away with that. The Black aldermen don’t have any clout because they won’t stick together and stick up for Black citizens. I sure wish I knew how to change that. We all need to understand that with every new fee the city imposes it makes it that

much more difficult for low income, particularly Black low-income people to keep living here. I have heard some say that the mayor’s plan is to gentrify Black people right out of Chicago. It seems that idea is gaining credibility. Black residents need to stand behind the Black alderman and tell them what we need them to do. If they can’t or won’t listen then we need to get rid of them.

Next the documentary goes to New York for the DOC NYC Film Fest on November 16 and 17. To help those that need legal representation in such a dire way, Motley has started a kickstarter campaign called The Justness Project that “aims to put the laws of a

Foundation goes for the T.K.O on $500k commitment to Mount Sinai The Barbara Bates Foundation will host its third annual “Knocking Out Breast Cancer” Fashion Show at Macy’s at 111 S. State Street on Saturday, October 24. The funds raised will go to the creation of the Barbara Bates Foundation Breast Wellness Center at Mount Sinai Hospital to educate women in under resourced communities about the detection and treatment of breast cancer. To date the Foundation has raised over $430K toward a total commitment of $500K,

one year ahead of schedule. “Knocking Out Breast Cancer” is not just another fashion show, rather all the models are survivors of breast cancer or are currently battling the disease. Bates is pioneering the movement to support breast cancer re-

search for women of color through fashion. Bates has taken a ‘grassroots’ approach to meeting her commitment to Mount Sinai and earlier this year the Foundation hosted their second Annual 5k Walk-Run called “Walk Where You Live,” that contributed an additional $25K to this year’s efforts. Additionally, committee members have raised funds on the job, through special fundraising events and by collecting spare change. Team members even worked for tips at local restaurants, most notably Truth Italian Restaurant on Pershing Road. “Through my experiences I learned that breast cancer does not have a type and it can strike anyone despite their race, age, size or even family history,” says Bates, fashion designer and founder of The Barbara Bates Foundation, “I am humbled by the success we’ve had to date in raising these funds and excited about meeting our fundraising commitment to Sinai after this year’s KOBC Fashion Show.” “We are grateful for our partnership with the Barbara Bates Foundation,” said Karen Teitelbaum, Sinai Health System president and CEO. “It is a powerful grassroots commitment to fight breast cancer in our community. We look forward to this year’s event.” Serving as emcee for this year’s event will be Windy City Live’s Val Warner.
