Chatham movie theater set to reopen By Wendell Hutson Last week’s abrupt closing of the only movie theater on the South Side could be reversed soon with the theater reopening under new management. Alderman Howard Brookins Jr., whose 21st Ward includes the theater said it will reopen within the next week or so. “Michael Silver, who is not Black, will reopen the theater. He also will rehire all former employees too,” Brookins told the Crusader. “However, I am not sure if it will still be called the ICE Chatham Theater.” Silver is a business partner of Alisa Starks, who previously owned the ICE Chatham 14 Theater, 210 W. 87th St., through Inner City Entertainment, which she founded and now serves as president. Starks was unavailable for comment at Crusader press time. The 2nd Annual Englewood Film Festival takes place from Oct. 25 to 28 this year and will be held at Kennedy-King College. Last year it was held at Lindblom Math and Science Academy. According to Mark Harris, a native of Englewood and now a Hollywood movie director, writer and producer (and sponsor of the Englewood Film Festival), four movies will be shown at the ICE Chatham

Write-in candidate looking to unseat Jackson By J. Coyden Palmer For more than 10 years Rev. Anthony Williams has been running for a variety of political offices without success. Despite the results, Williams continues to keep his name in the public with his latest stance being taken against incumbent Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. This time Williams is running as a write-in candidate against Jackson and is getting more publicity as the congressman continues to battle a public perception problem with his reported medical issues that have kept him from his duties since June. Williams, a resident of south suburban Robbins has called for Jackson to come out and address serious issues with his constituents or get out of the race. While Williams said he has some serious problems with Jackson even when he is healthy, he thinks what is taking place now is an

embarrassment to the people of the district and not giving them a voice in congress. (Continued on page 3)

Mayor Emanuel orders independent audit As part of improved oversight and accountability the parking meter contract, comprehensive audits will be performed regularly. In order to assure Chicagoans that the long-term contracts to manage City assets are being properly managed, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced recently that he has ordered the City’s finance and legal teams to enlist independent auditors to conduct periodic audits of the operational and financial management. The first audit will be of the Chicago Parking Meters, LLC concession agreement and will begin in November. In addition to the parking meters agreement, audits will be conducted on the lakefront parking garages and the Skyway concession agreements on a periodic basis. “To ensure we are responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars being paid to CPM, it is imperative this administration vigilantly exercise due diligence while effectively managing each contract. comprehensive, regular audits will help ensure accountability and keep those behind the agreements honest and responsible,” said Mayor Emanuel. CPM, a consortium of investors led by Morgan Stanley, has submitted invoices to the city totaling more than $50 million. As soon as Mayor Emanuel took office, the new administration began rigorous enforcement of the contract and started regular trainings for the staff in departments. The administration has also established a new computer based reporting system through 311 that requires advanced notice for all street closures. In addition, the Chicago Department of Revenue now verifies all changes to the meter system made by Chicago City Council, including installing meters, removing meters, changing rates, and changes to hours of operation. The audit - which outside consultants will start in November will cover two areas: financial and operational. The audit is expected

Grace period registration and voting is now available for eligible Illinois voters who missed the registration deadline but still want to vote in the Nov. 6, 2012 Presidential Election. “Procrastinators can still participate during the grace period if you need to register to vote for the first time, change your name or update your address,” Cook County Clerk David Orr said. The grace period is available until Nov. 3. Anyyone who registers during the grace period, you must vote at the time of registration. Roosevelt Road, which closed in 2007 but reopened in 2011. And ICE also closed its theater at 2258 W. 62nd St. in 2007. For now though, residents living on the Far South Side will have to travel to the South Suburbs or the South Loop to find a movie theater. “I don’t want to do either,” said Nedra Cox, who lives in the Roseland community. “It was convenient for me to drive to 87th Street to catch a movie. Now I have to burn more gas to go to the suburbs to see a movie that is already costing me $10. No way.” Every Tuesday was ‘Twlight Tuesday’ at Chatham, which meant the admission for movies all day was the matinee price of $6.75 per person. “That’s a whole lot better than $9.50. Tuesday was my day I would go to the show,” said Byron Temple, 47. “I don’t know any other movie theater that has this special price during the week unless you are a senior citizen, which I am not.” And Chatham residents also are upset that they now have to spend their money outside their community. “I like spending my money in my own neighborhood where I can see my dollars making a difference,” said Terrance Bell, 81, who has lived in Chatham, a Black, middleclass area, for 34 years. “I’m not sure what I will do now. To qualify to vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by Election Day (Nov. 6) and a resident of his or her precinct for at least 30 days prior to the election. If registering during the grace period, you must display two pieces of identification. Neither needs to be a photo ID, but one must include your current address. to include interviews with CPM’s CEO, CFO, representatives from its principal investor, Morgan Stanley, financial auditors, and senior Information Technology professionals; as well as key contractors. The audit will include a review of the following areas: Contract management and compliance (including M/WBE and local hiring requirements) for both the agreement and related key contractor agreements; revenue reconciliation between transactions and collections records; revenue recognition for reserve meters; and management of the operating standards. Depending on the initial review of these areas, the audits may be expanded to include additional financial and operational processes. “This administration will continue to fight any charges sent by CPM that we feel are not accurate or justified. As I have said before, the city does not cut a check simply because we receive a bill.”

CAUGHT BY SURPRISE was one movie goer as he arrived at the ICE Chatham 14 Theater last Friday to find signs taped on the door letting the public know that the Black-owned theater had temporarily shut down. wait to see if the theater reopens or I’ll start ordering movies at home.” The 14-screen Chatham theater opened in 1997 under much excitement by the community since it was the only Black-owned theater, said Alderman Roderick Sawyer, whose Sixth Ward includes the Chatham community but not the theater. “I hope it can reopen because if not it will be missed by the community,” he added. When patrons arrived at the Chatham Theater last Friday the doors were locked and two signs were taped on several windows. One sign read: “Temporarily closed. Will open under new management soon.” And the other sign was from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, which read in part: “All persons have been evicted from

these premises.” The theater closure follows an eviction entered in Cook County Circuit Court against ICE Development LLC on August 16, according to Nora Sheahan, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office. Brookins added that Starks was in the middle of refinancing the property and had hoped the process would be complete before the eviction was carried out by the sheriff’s office. Previously, Starks told the Crusader that she was attempting to lure a sit-down restaurant to the vacant land adjacent to the theater, so customers will have a place to eat before and after watching a movie. The theater is located inside a strip mall where there are no sit-down restaurants but several fast-food restaurants. The Chicago Crusader

Daley College, and Culinary and Hospitality at KennedyKing College. Over the next decade, over 80,000 job openings are predicted in these three fields in Cook County alone, representing a wide range of opportunities for Chicagoans. “Companies are continuing to look to Chicago as a city with top

College to Careers is a nationally recognized initiative that the Mayor launched in December 2011 that partners industry experts with City Colleges faculty and staff to develop current and innovative curriculum, directly preparing students for careers in high-demand and high-growth fields and working to close the skills gap that often keeps people from filling currently

Write-in candidate looking to unseat (Continued from page 1) “The Second Congressional District and our nation are facing challenging times,” Williams wrote in a press release earlier this week. “We are in need of leadership that is stable, clearheaded and visionary. This is not the case with the current Congressman who continues to be deceptive and insulting to us as citizens of the Second Congressional District. He has been a problem creator and not a problem solver in his 18 years in Congress.” Williams went on to say that he is not entirely sold on the idea that Jackson is ill. Williams said Jackson has become a distraction that the district does not need and has benefited from his father Jesse Jackson Sr.’s influence. “I am encouraging the citizens of the Second Congressional District to focus and see through Jackson’s camouflage,” Williams said. “Sympathy is the last thing he needs. He suffers from the illness of entitlement disorder. The incumbent is trying to avoid jail time. His burdens must not burden the citizens and our district.

Our prayers go out to him on his illness, but life goes on.” But winning a seat to the U.S. Congress as an independent write-in candidate in a district that has historically been strongly democratic will be a tough job for Williams. Having never being elected to any public office also is against Williams. But Williams said he believes that just like Eddie Murphy’s character in the movie “The Distinguished Gentleman” and real life example Lisa Murkowski, who in 2010 won election to the U.S. Senate as a write-in candidate from Alaska. Jim Allen, spokesperson for the Chicago Board of Elections said if voters want to vote for a write-in candidate, they must follow the proper format on the ballot and the candidate themselves must also have declared their candidacy. You have to write in the candidates name and also connect the arrow next to that person’s name,” Allen explained. “There also has to be a blank for you to write the candidate’s name in. Otherwise there is no valid candidate for that particular race. On a

touch screen you follow a similar procedure, you click on the writein space and then you type in the persons name and then you click on the box to indicate that you want your vote for this person, so make an X in that box. So it’s a two-step process; writing in the persons name and make your intent known. Just writing in the person’s name does not mean you have voted for that candidate and your vote will not be accepted.” Williams has declared his candidacy and said he believes he can win. He said the public is frustrated with both parties and career politicians. He said he believes his independent voice will appeal to voters who are dealing with several uncertainties in the district. “Education, healthcare, economic development, accountability and transparency must become the norm for the Second District,” Williams said. “The people of the Second Congressional District must be intelligent on their choice of who will be the next Congressman.”

State nabs more than 1,100 in unemployment scam Admitting, “Some are good people who made bad decisions,” an Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) spokesman said the state will be reimbursed by the 1,100 individuals who wrongfully collected $2 million in unemployment benefits. Exactly 296 Cook County Jail inmates racked up $722,689 in payments he wasn’t eligible for. One of those inmates hauled in $43,000. Greg Rivara, IDES spokesperson said that once an individual becomes eligible for unemployment compensation, that person is required to phone an automated number to verified their ability to work. He said only in a few cases would an inmate be able to answer the questions yes that he or she is able to work and is available for work-key questions for being eligible for unemployment benefits. A person who is already receiving unemployment benefits and jailed could be eligible for up to 72 weeks of those payments if the incarceration for one or two weeks. IDES Director Jay Rowell, said “cross-matching names of individuals collecting unemployment benefits with inmates lists from Illinois’ county jails and state prisons is the latest effort to protect taxpayers, prevent fraud and help the economy.” He added that “integrity initiatives” have saved $120 million. “Money that comes from funds the unemployment insurance program comes from businesses. Stopping fraud helps our businesses reduce costs, which leads to new hires

and a stronger economy,” Rowell added. The totals released this week include July, August and September figures. Rivara said many of those who collected the benefits illegally are no longer incarcerated. Those individuals have been contacted and offered the option of paying in full, or entering a program allowing them to repay in installments. Rivara said that the state will garnish state and federal tax returns from people who don’t comply with either option. If the individuals lose their jobs and still haven’t paid, the state will garnish that person’s unemployment benefits. Rivara explained that in the case of person who received $357 (the lowest amount of the 1,10 individuals on the crossmatching list); the state would take a small amount of his unemployment payments. He added, “It is unlikely that jail officials or local leaders could have prevented the wrongful payments.” Rowell said in the past year, his office has saved taxpayers $120 million by implementing the inmate cross-matching system, garnishing federal tax returns of unemployment cheats, bolstering anti-fraud unit from Attorney General Lisa Madigan; and created a new-hire directory to more quickly identify fraud. Fraud in other counties included Will County with 21 inmates and $85,159; Winnebago County, 20 inmates and $84,533; Lake County 20 inmates and $76,017; and Peoria 21, and $72,350.

OPINION

EDITORIAL CHOOSE WISELY There is a law of nature that is evident all around us. Opposition is the name of the game; whenever something comes into existence, its opposite does also. This was stated early on by the great scientist Sir Isaac Newton in one of his laws; for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Actually, the world of science does not always translate into the so-called “real world,” at least according to some people. But it becomes apparent that it does if we look at the world around us. One of the most obvious examples in American politics is the two party system. The two party system, i.e., Democrats and Republicans, exemplify the qualities found in oppositions everywhere; they are complementary. And as in the case of hot ice, if one goes to the extremes in one position, it becomes difficult to tell the differences between them. In other words, an extreme right wing Republican exhibits the same rigidity as an extreme left wing Democrat. However, even considering the foregoing point, there seem to be distinct differences between the Republican and Democrat camps. Republicans tend to attract the moneyed classes; they seem to be less tolerant of social justice issues. They are more prone to favor big business and rugged individualism. They tend to look down on the poor as less deserving. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney provided the best example of this outlook in his 47% comment that alluded to the notion that almost half of all Americans consider themselves victims who want handouts. It is interesting to note that Republicans, who have gained a reputation as the party of “No” during the Obama administration because of their penchant for blocking everything Obama, are the party that seems to have the most hawks. Democrats on the other hand, tend to be viewed as bleeding heart liberals who favor people over profit, who favor inclusion over exclusion. If you think about the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, the differences become obvious. The Republican convention gave us a sea of White faces. The Democratic convention, conversely, gave us diversity and inclusion; everyone was represented – it was a veritable salad bowl that more closely resembles current America unlike the retroWhite America of earlier times demonstrated by the Republicans. Mitt Romney, to many, conjures up this earlier America, the America that is intolerant of others and that values profit over people, the America that created the glass ceiling; the America that fights affirmative action; the America that was alright with the lynching of Black people, the America in which the “good ol’ days” were those back on the plantation; the tough guy America that wants to bully the world. Democrat Barack Obama presents a different face of America; one that demonstrates concern not only for Americans, but for the world. He has consistently reached across the aisle in an attempt to get things done. He has reached out and the Republicans have pulled back. Even though this is the case, he has still accomplished quite a bit. The question that we must ask ourselves is whether or not we want a party and a candidate that offers hope for all of the people, or one that looks down its collective nose at 47% of Americans with disdain; one that has spawned a very disingenuous “Tea Party” that in no way resembles those who originally adopted that moniker as a response to “taxation without representation.” We must choose between two options, and the choice that we make will determine the future of America and, by extension, Black America. A luta continua.

Thank God that Toni Preckwinkle’s heart is in the right place as she doesn’t t want to put an additional tax on Cook County homeowners, but her head certainly isn’t where it needs to be. Her announcement last week that she wants to raise the tax on cigarettes, guns, and ammunition is just dumb, dumb, dumb. The price of cigarettes in Chicago is already forcing thousands of smokers to get their smokes in the collar counties as well as Indiana. The only reason for anyone to buy cigarettes in Cook County after the new $1 tax is implemented is they can’t get a ride to DuPage County or across the border to Indiana. We can be assured driving business out of the city, as this tax will do, will cause some businesses to dry up. The tax on gun purchases makes even less sense. At $25 per gun how much money can the county really generate? And it’s not like legitimate gun owners are buying more than two guns per year –at the most. One has to question if the paperwork and thought that went into this tax idea is worth the perceived financial benefit. Preckwinkle’s budget pundits have her believing the county can generate $1 million in new rev-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Poor misguided Toni Preckwinkle To the Editor:

enues by putting a nickel tax on bullets. Have these people heard of the Internet? Don’t they understand a person can buy boxes and boxes of bullets online without the county having any clue? A lot of shooters enjoy making their own bullets, a chore that is neither complicated or untested. In this same paper a few weeks ago, small gun shop owners said this ammo tax would have a huge negative impact on their businesses. Some even said because the tax would drive customers away and the store owners might be forced to close. What needs to happen if Preckwinkle is serious about saving money, is to look at the size of county government and make some personnel cuts –starting with Preckwinkle’s office. These cuts, be they through attrition, traditional layoffs, or buy-outs need to occur merely to reduce the size of government, cut the cost of government, and bring some much needed revenues to the County. Any persons on the payroll, who are retired from state or city jobs, should be let go too; that is if the real reason for these weak taxes is to plug the budget holes. On public radio Friday morning, she said her plan is based on President Obama being re-elected. She refused to answer what would happen, although it is obvious, to her plan should the president be defeated on November 6. The wheels would come rolling off.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Cuba Begins the Road to Success By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist The National Black Chamber of Commerce® has been studying the evolution of Cuba for fourteen years. The evolution has been slow as we entered the 21st century but recently there have been some major economic developments. Last November Cuban residents were given the right to personal property. They can now buy and sell homes. Just last week they can now freely travel abroad with an authentic visa from the nation they wish to visit. During our first trip to Cuba in August, 2000, we were stunned by all the promising features of this island nation and its people. My mentor, the late Dr. Arthur A. Fletcher, marveled at this and said to me, “This nation will one day become the ‘Hong Kong’ of the Caribbean.” Art, it is about to start happening. Let’s look at the possibilities. Cuba has a great education system which is far superior to ours. These citizens are ready to take on the global market as they are adept at the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects. For exam-

Harry C. Alford ple, they are some of the best engineers and architects in the world. Much of this talent is used around the globe and helps generate revenue for the nation. The last time I was in Paris I took a stroll past a new five star hotel that was being built. I was surprised to see so many Blacks doing the construction. The next day I came by again and heard one of Fidel Castro’s speeches blasting out through some speakers. It became clear to me that the

construction company and probably the architectural team were indeed Cuban. I first witnessed this inspirational exercise while we were in Havana. Their prowess at infrastructure is becoming legend around the world. Africa, Europe, Asia and other places they are making a great reputation. This island nation is also known for its healthcare delivery system. Cuban doctors are so efficient that they travel around the globe helping to address health issues wherever it is needed. A Black Cuban has a lifespan at least a decade longer than an African American. Every Cuban is required to have a full medical exam twice a year. Did you know that they have eradicated sickle cell anemia in Cuba? Now that they can freely travel we should be sending for some of their health services here since it is superior to ours. Just think of the possibilities in all third world nations. The biggest provider of wealth for the average American is real estate equity (right now it is in a funk but it will return). Now that Cubans can buy and sell homes it is going to generate cash for prospective entrepreneurs. With

these proceeds they can invest in start-up businesses and begin the venture of wealth building and job creation. Banks in Cuba are as busy as ever. There is now a housing demand for over 600,000 new homes. Think of the construction companies popping up to meet that demand - JOBS, JOBS AND JOBS. The government is estimating that over 1 million new jobs can be created through this capitalistic activity. This nation has a population of about 11 million people and already 338,000 are now self-employed. Cuba is one of the hottest tourist destinations for Europeans and South Americans. Its white sand beaches, modern hotels (mostly European owned), best rum in the world, best lobsters in the world and slick Afro – Cuban music (actually straight from the Congo via the slavery years) makes it a festive nation. Did I mention the world’s best cigars? We saw some of the most beautiful Black women in the world living there. The “gates” of Cuba are unlocked. It is time for our nation to catch up to these changes and let us travel and do business with our brothers and sisters in Cuba

like the rest of the world. Cuba has survived all the sanctions, dirty games, spying and trickery we have thrown at it since 1959. It is now ready, willing and quite able to participate in the global economy. In fact, we should be going there right now and invest in this newborn economy. The best educated people with a natural work ethic should be value added human capital for our corporations. They would be excellent joint venture partners for our small businesses. God has blessed Cuba. Maybe it is that giant statue of Jesus in downtown Havana that is helping things out. Also, maybe it is that statue of Abraham Lincoln in the town square that compels us to go there and join this renaissance. Next year we need to organize a gigantic trade mission to spend a good two weeks in Havana, Santiago and the countryside. Hopefully, our nation will catch up to this modernization and extension of liberty in Cuba. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Romney Continues Campaign of Lies By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist As we have seen during three presidential debates and in his campaign speeches, Mitt Romney will say anything – even when he knows it is untrue – in his effort to dislodge President Obama from the White House. Romney charged in the second presidential debate that “it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.” Obama denied it, urging Romney to “Get the transcript.” FactCheck.org observed. “The transcript does show that Obama said in a Rose Garden speech on Sept. 12: ‘No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.’” In the same debate, Romney said a gallon of gasoline in Nassau County, N.Y. was $1.86 when Obama took office. It’s now “4 bucks a gallon.” As fact checkers for USA Today stated, “Gas prices were going through a period of exceptional volatility when Obama took office – largely because, as Obama noted, gas prices plummeted as the recession took hold and people drove less… The Chicago Crusader

But gas prices are still 34 cents below their all-time high during the Bush administration. In the summer of 2008, the national average hit $4.05 a gallon.” FactCheck.org noted, “Mitt Ro mney falsely claims in a series of TV ads that President Obama ‘will raise taxes on the middle class by $4,000.’ That’s nonsense. The ads cite a conservative group’s study, but even the group itself doesn’t say Obama will raise taxes on middle-income taxpayers. It says his budget could result in a ‘potentially higher tax burden’ over the next 10 years. “In fact, the group’s study considered two other budget scenarios – current law (allowing the Bush-era tax cuts to expire as scheduled at the end of this year) and current policy (extending current policies into 2013, including extending the Bush-era tax cuts) – and determined that Obama’s budget ‘provides a middle ground between these two extremes.’” Romney said during a Republican debate on Feb 22: “I said today that we’re going to cut taxes on everyone across the country by 20 percent, including the top 1 percent.” However, during a debate with Obama, he said, “I’m not looking to cut taxes for wealthy people.”

George E. Curry In that same debate, Romney said: “In the – in the last four years, women have lost 580,000 jobs. That’s the net of what’s happened in the last four years. We’re still down 580,000 jobs.” FactCheck.org found: “Actually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the net loss of women’s jobs since January 2009, when the president took office, is 283,000. Even the 283,000 figure is an overstatement. The BLS also has announced that its routine annual benchmarking process will result next year in adding 386,000 total jobs – men and women – to the official historical figures. It did not say how many of those would be women’s jobs, but about 49 percent of total em-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

ployment is currently accounted for by women. So about 190,000 will probably be subtracted from the 283,000 figure. That would put the current loss at 93,000, making Romney’s figure six times too high. “We assume Romney’s reference to ‘four years’ was meant to cover only Obama’s term. For the record, the number of women’s jobs lost in the last four months of the Bush administration was 833,000, according to the BLS. So the total over four years would come to 1.1 million, with the large majority lost before Obama was sworn in.” Romney has repeatedly charge that Obama has “cut Medicare by $716 billion to pay for Obamacare.” But FactCheck.org concluded: “Various incarnations of this claim have cropped up in Romney’s campaign speeches – including claims that Obama is ‘cutting’ ‘funneling’ or ‘raiding’ $716 billion from Medicare to pay for the health care law. But Medicare money isn’t being taken away. The Affordable Care Act calls for a $716 billion reduction in the growth of Medicare spending over 10 years, a move that – if successful – would keep the hospital insurance trust fund solvent for an additional eight years… Saturday, October 27, 2012

Furthermore, as we explained in detail in our story ‘Medicare’s ‘Piggy Bank,’ “ Medicare doesn’t have $716 billion sitting around that could be ‘raided.’ The president can’t take money out of the trust fund – which had $244.2 billion at the end of 2011.” Even on those rare occasions when Romney is telling the truth, there is deception. For example, he claims that he will create 12 million new jobs in his first term. But as fact checkers for USA Today pointed out, “Romney’s pledge to create 12 million jobs has been hotly contested in large part because economic forecasters, including Moody’s Analytics, predict roughly 12 million jobs will be created over the next four years – no matter who is elected president.” George E. COMMENTARY

Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

THE INTELLECTUAL CRISIS (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF), located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill One of our great ancestors, Harold Cruse wrote a book, The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, which was published in 1967, at the height of the Black Power Movement. This insightful book stirred up a spirited conversation in the African Liberation Movement. That conversation revolves

around the weaknesses of our movement, the direction of our movement, and inability of some of the leaders and thinkers of our movement to understand what Brother Cruse calls “The Great American Ideal.” This problem continues to linger with us today. Brother Cruse spent most of his activist and organizing days in Harlem, New York from the 1940s until he accepted a professorship at the University of Michigan and helped develop their Black Studies Program in 1967. In Harlem, Brother Cruse was an active participant in most of the major organizing activities that swept through New York for over twenty years. The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual is a summation of those experiences as it related to the literature and history of the African Liberation Movement. This year, 2012 marks the fortyfifth year of the publication of The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual. Its importance to our movement has still not received the attention it deserves, primarily because Brother Cruse was so honest in his criticisms of our movement and many of its wellknown leaders. Therefore, the book was blocked in many circles from receiving the kind of legitimacy its substance deserved.

However, a small group of scholar/activists have discussed and debated Brother Cruse’s ideas during this forty-five year period and have organized study groups from time to time that have aided in understanding the ideas that Cruse presents in his book. When we use the term intellectual we are talking about people who struggle around ideas—writers, poets, scholars, researchers, teachers, students, and activists. Intellectuals are people who grapple with ideas and who function in the cultural, political, educational, and economic domains of the society. As Dr. Anderson Thompson always says, “Ideas are weapons of war.” With this definition, let us review briefly some of the ideas and concepts that Brother Cruse presented in The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual. One of the major points Cruse makes is the African American intellectuals are pathological in their approach to the choices available to them. It is Cruse’s observation that they appear to adopt the values of the dominant group, which he describes as the white Anglo Saxon Protestant. It was in the first chapter of The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual that Cruse raised this question of the problem of identity of the

African in America people. The question of our identity still remains a fundamental problem with the African in America Community today. There is a tendency in the African in America Community to identify with, emulate, and support other races and ethnic groups at the expense of our own race. Cruse illustrated this in his book when he described the following: “In 1940, as one of my first acts in the pursuit of becoming a more social being, I joined a YMCA amateur drama group in Harlem. I wanted to learn about theater so I became a stage technician— meaning a handyman for all backstage chores. But the first thing about this drama group that struck me as highly curious was the fact that all the members were overwhelmingly in favor of doing white plays with Negro casts.” Cruse continued on this point. “I wondered why and very naively expressed my sentiments about it. The replies that I got clearly indicated these amateur actors were not very favorable to the play about Negro life, although they would not plainly say so. Despite the fact that this question of identity was first presented to me within the context of the program of a small, insignificant am-

ateur drama group, its implications ranged far beyond.” Another problem Cruse addresses is that the African in America intellectual’s conceptualization of our condition is not based on the ethnic reality of America. The American Ideal espouses one set of principles through the Constitution, but the basis of reality of this society is founded on ethnic and religious pluralism not individualism, according to Brother Cruse. From the point of view of Brother Cruse, the African in America intellectual is not accepted by whites and does not identify with their own racial group. Cruse concludes that the crisis of the African in America intellectual is an identity crisis and misunderstanding of the false postulation of the American Ideal. For Brother Cruse, the crisis was whether the African in America intellectual will accept the challenge of being the spokesman or spokeswoman of the African in America masses in terms of setting guidelines for our movement and of understanding the issues of our race, making proper analyses, and proceeding to help build our movement. This is still the crisis we face today.

WHAT YOU TALKING ‘BOUT WILLARD? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Halfway through the Presidential debate on Wednesday night, I remembered the show where Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges played Arnold and Willis Jackson. Little Arnold was always asking, “What you talking ‘bout Willis?” My question, exactly, only this time directed toward Republican nominee Willard Mitt Romney. What in the world was he talking about when he attempted to debate President Obama on October 16? The Republican nominee behaved as if he were on some kind of upper. Some may have thought his delivery was firm, but when he raised his voice and asked President Obama the same questions several times (Have you checked your pension? Will you answer my question? Well then how much oil production did you cut?). He came off as more obnoxious (or chemically enhanced) than forceful. Because President Obama is a world leader, he could not give the ‘hood response which 6

might have been “shut your mouth up” (or some such related rejoinder). Instead, he responded with dignity and clarity. Mr. Romney is flip-flopping more frequently than a pancake

prices to President Obama’s policies, not to the greater factor of world demand. Surely you know better than that! You are running away from your position faster than a gold medal-winning sprinter at the Olympics. Maybe Willard knows no better. This may be why he substituted raw aggression for actual facts. He disrespected both moderator Candy Crowley and President Obama, but then when you wear the mantle of the entitled white male, I think you think you can disrespect and insult anyone. Some of the spinmeisters are out calling this a “draw” or saying that President Obama was “too aggressive.” That means that when a Black man makes a point he is aggressive, but when a privileged and entitled white man just about beats on his chest, hollers, ignores directions, and does a spot-on imitation of Homie the Clown on steroids (sorry, Homie, for the insult), he is being firm. Were the spinmeisters and I watching the same debate? Or were their biases showing? In the last debate, some say the

on an IHOP grill. So he can’t make up his mind about his tax plan, women’s equality, coal pro-

duction, or anything. He says he has a five-point plan, but really it is a one-point plan, “Trust me.” Why should anybody trust him when he can’t say whether he will cut the mortgage deduction, the charitable contributions deduction, or college credits? He says he will have to think about it. What has he been doing for the past ten years when he was running for President? Clearly not thinking! If it takes him this long to think through his policy, may be he could join (or with his money, even start) a think tank for the cognitively impaired! What you talking ‘bout Willard? You don’t yet know whether you can support the Lily Ledbetter Act, the first piece of legislation that President Obama signed upon his inauguration as President of the United States. You have yet to figure out women’s equality. You forgot that you stood outside a coal plant in Massachusetts and talked about pollution. You are not sure about the tax breaks you took at Bain when you were exporting jobs. Moreover, you connect gasoline

gender gap closed and as many women favored Romney as President Obama. That implied disturbing things about some women. My mamma used to ask me why good girls liked bad boys. I don’t remember my answer, but back in the day I could find a bad boy faster than a penny in my pocket. If women tipped for Romney after that first debate, they were saying they liked their men loud, rude, and crude. Let’s see where the gender gap goes after the second debate, where Obama put his foot down with dignity and class, while Romney ranted as if he were out of control. What you talking ‘bout, Willard? You distorted the facts so badly about Libya that moderator Candy Crowley had to jump in and correct you. Your “I have to think about that” platform was pure comedy. Your flipping and flopping suggested that you will say anything to get elected, and raised questions about what you will do after you are elected. What you talking ‘bout Willard? Not much! ABOUT HORSES AND BAYONETS Obviously Mutt Romney’s advisors told him to look presidential and not like someone who would press the button on the red suitcase ill-advised. Well, he failed. He looked like a bumbling idiot and one out-of-touch with reality. His facts were wrong as usual, but that’s no news bulletin. Mutt has demonstrated that he can look into the camera and without any hesitation tell the biggest lies ever. The racists of the United States have tried every gimmick they can to kick America’s First Black President out of the White House. What gets Ima all of these learned political analysts

Mutt Romney seems to have forgotten that the racists announced that their biggest goal was to make Barack Obama a one-time President. Nobody seems to understand that instead of folks talking about what President Obama has failed to do they should be talking about what he managed to do in spite of roadblocks and booby traps the Party of NO set for the prexy. Any less of a man would have given up, cried and whimpered for four years. But instead President Obama kept plugging away. Instead unemployment has dropped, the housing market is showing a come back, he’s managed to keep Pell Grants afloat, he’s whipped the boys on Wall Street (maybe not as much as we would like it, but they know dey been taken to the woodshed), saved the Automobile Industry (in particular General Motors and Chrysler) and produced million of jobs (not what he could have achieved if the Congress had not

blocked every attempt). What dese crazy folks talking about, the President should receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Now I don’t know what debates the President’s opposition been looking at, but the President done kicked butt. Ima thinks the President was in shock during the first debate when Mutt Romney came out with guns ablazing as he told lie after lie. President Obama could not believe a person, in front of millions of viewers would dare tell the whoppers (lies) with a straight face like he did. He has flip flopped so much until he has changed all of his campaign points and just says when the President makes a point and takes a position he says “ME TOO!!” IN my neck of the woods folks would describe Mutt Romney as a “bald face liar.” Now the President can’t do that but Ima can and that’s exactly what he is. The best zinger the President got off on Monday night was the response he gave when Mutt told one of his big whoppers about the U.S. having less Naval ships now since 1916. The internet has blown up with the President’s response that we also have “less horses and bayonets.” Didn’t he look like a fool? But if dey elect this buffoon after he is so confused himself about his platform since he changes it hourly, Ima gonna be looking for a cave, cause anything is subject to happen. He has demonstrated that he will

Student Loan Problems Mirror those of Mortgages By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist

explain their products are probably not a good choice for the consumer. For consumers now considering a private student loan, invest some time to identify and pursue other forms of financial aid such as grants, scholarships, federal student loans, or work-study pro-

An adage counsels, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” When it comes to consumer debt, that advice is also a truism. After years of mortgage borrowers complaining about servicing – or the lack thereof – it appears that problems student loan borrowers face are remarkably similar. With student loan debt topping the trillion-dollar mark, another looming credit crisis could emerge just as the housing market is showing signs of recovery. According to the Survey of Consumer Finance, today one in four American households are headed by someone under the age of 35 with student loan debt. Private student loans account for more than $150 billion of outstanding debt. Moreover, more than 850,000 of these loans are in default and even more are delinquent. Like the many troubled homeowners who did not understand the terms of their mortgages, student loan borrowers are now having the same difficulty. Servicers, often hired by lenders, often do not share or know the terms of repayment, available options for refinance, or even the total amount owed. Recently, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released a report on the nearly 2,900 private student loan complaints it received since March of this year. Approximately 65 percent of complaints allege problems with servicers regarding fees, billing, fraud and credit reporting. Another 30 percent of borrowers filing complaints with CFPB were concerned with limited repayment options, debt collection practices and problems related to loans in default. “Student loan borrower stories of detours and dead-ends with their servicers bear an uncanny resemblance to problematic practices uncovered in the mortgage servicing business,” said Rohit Chopra, CFPB’s Student Loan Ombudsman. The vast majority of the student loan complaints received by CFPB were about private loans. Unfortunately, private loans typically do not have the consumer protections built into federal student loans, such as lower interest and fixed rates, incomebased repayment plans, military deferments or discharges upon death. Instead, the typical private student loan servicer actually works for the lender and may not have an incentive to provide a high level of customer service to bor-

rowers. In the face of financial hardship, unemployment or underemployment, these student loan borrowers often discover few or no options that can be adapted for their circumstances. In some cases, servicers encouraged borrowers to pay whatever they could, but failed to inform them their loan status would still be on a path towards default. With fewer options for refinance or forbearance, some private student loan borrowers are also claiming they were never advised of the difference between a federal and private loan either at the time the loan was first originated or later during repayment. If the original loan was sold or if the servicer changed, many servicers were unable to answer basic questions as to who actually owns the unpaid loan. Depending upon loan terms, it may not be possible to negotiate alternative repayment. Other complaints filed with CFPB expressed concerns with servicer errors or misinformation. For example, some servicers may take two to four days to process payments – even if the payment was submitted online. As a result, borrowers end up paying interest on a higher outstanding principal in the process. Others complained about faulty record-keeping, lost paperwork and errors that though promised to be quickly corrected were not. Still more complaints charged that even after getting transferred to multiple departments, no one was responsive or empowered to provide a clear answer. If there is a moral to these unfortunate consumer experiences, it could be summed up with CFPB’s slogan, “Know Before You Owe.” Before any debt is incurred, take the time and necessary persistence to fully learn obligations and responsibilities. Any business or its representative that is unwilling or reluctant to

grams. Need-based grants often offered by state and federal initiatives can help defray college costs without incurring debt. Other programs are available to promote the growth of minorities in specific career paths. “Know Before You Owe” is good advice. Knowing more

Azteca Foods recently announced that the Peer Ministry class of Maria High School has been awarded a $500 Shine On grant. The grant competition, which ran from April 1 – September 30, 2012 was open to teens and teen groups in Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin and was intended to help teen volunteers make a difference in their communities. The grant will allow the Maria Peer Ministry class, under the guidance of teacher and Campus Minister Judy Bumbul, organize and execute a campus wide food drive to stock the shelves of the Sisters of St. Casimir food pantry. The Sisters have requested the items most in demand by the families that visit them: peanut butter, jelly, and breakfast cereals.

Azteca Foods, Inc. Vice President of Marketing Joe Rabaglia notified Bumbul of the award via email and shared his enthusiasm for the project by saying, “It makes our heart happy to help teens who are helping others.” In its final year of operation, Maria currently shares the school building, located at 67th and California, with students from the Catalyst Maria elementary school and Catalyst Maria high school charter schools. ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO - STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

Lemon “So watch me be the artist who was born readymade. Watch me take my lemons and make the best god**** lemonade.” These words, from the staged memoir County of Kings, capture the essence of Lemon Andersen’s life, and frame the award-winning documentary Lemon, about the Brooklyn-born poet and playwright. After leaving Rikers Island, Andersen discovers poetry at the age of 20 and is a break out star on Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam, both the weekly series and especially Simmons’ award-winning 2003 Broadway play of the same name. However after finding some acclaim and running through his fast earnings, he is back to square peg one, with no income and a family to support. He also finds himself back in the projects, living in tight quarters with his wife, his wife’s family and at least 13 people in his in-laws’ home. He is desperate to get out, and he has what has sustained him for many years—his poetry. In a fantastic documentary that had me glued to my seat, Andersen pays homage to his late mother who died as a result of drugs and AIDS, and his big brother with whom he was left after his mother’s death. I call him a Def Jam poet/activist who was determined to, as he says, make lemonade out of the figurative lemons that he had been dealt and the figurative lemons that he brought to his own doorstep, gaining the distinction of being a three-time felon. But he ends up a one-time Tony Award winner. Lemon delves into six years of the poet’s life, as he goes back and forth trying to find and keep his niche in spoken word and performance art. He combs over stacks of personal notes detailing his mother’s addiction and trips to the Methadone clinic; his growing up with his brother and resorting to petty criminal acts to get by. He attracts folks at the American Place Theatre who invest in his production, as well as his life. They give him an outlet to reach students. Although there isn’t much money, everyone is filled with dreams. But luck comes Andersen’s way in the form of the prestigious Public Theater in New York, who want to just outright take over the reins of this production, without giving much credit or funds to American Place Theatre. Andersen is faced with hard

Andersen and Russell Simmons decisions that affect friendships, but that will finally bring his story to a wider audience. I loved Lemon, and I just fell in love with Andersen, because he was determined to share his story with others, so that it might be a light to propel those on the sidelines; those afflicted by poverty

Lemon Andersen

and bad circumstances to rise up and believe that they can do better. His poem where he urges rich people to pay attention to the poor, underclass is riveting. After his performances at the Public Theater, Andersen received many accolades. In 2011, he was chosen to join the Sundance Institute’s Playwrights Retreat and the TED organization invited him to perform at the inaugural TED Youth event, which was live streamed in 16 countries. In the spring of 2012, Andersen traveled to Australia and New Zealand where he participated in the Sydney Writers Festival and the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival. Lemon is produced with support from Spike Lee, Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and others. The film’s writers are Laura Brownson and Beth Levison. It is available on DVD and VOD from Cinema Libre. ALEX CROSS A Review by Bonnie DeShong Dr. Alex Cross is a psychiatrist and police detective with the uncanny ability to know what a crook is thinking by sniffing the air. He is a family man who deeply loves his wife and soon to be 3 children. He works with his best friend from childhood and believes in honesty and playing by the book. He is so good at his job; the FBI is courting him to become a profiler for the agency. All is good in Dr. Cross’s life. All is not good with the film itself. The main problem is, unfortunately, Tyler Perry as Alex Cross. I like Tyler Perry and all that is does outside of his moneymaker, the ‘Madea’ films. I see him removed from that character and I think there are great roles for him. Alex Cross was not one of them. Vänskä, Capuçon Brothers, CSO and Brahms Conductor Osmo Vänskä, music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, replaced Bernard Haitink as conductor with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) on Thursday, October 18, 2012. Haitink was forced to cancel the first week of his scheduled appearances with the CSO this season. The all-Brahms program remained unchanged. Following rave reviews of their respective CSO debuts, French classical musical prodigies, brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon returned to Symphony Center to team up with the CSO to present Johannes Brahms’ Double Concerto resulting in a lyrical and passionate outpouring of glorious musicmaking that electrified the Thursday night audience, bringing

In an article on last week’s “World of Music” page, it was announced that The Ravinia Festival is sponsoring a permanent, interactive musicmaking exhibit at Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago in Glenview, furthering the festival’s mission of exposing young people to music. The exhibit was officially unveiled by children on October 9 with Ramsey Lewis, Ravinia’s artistic director of jazz and an advocate of music education, performing for the live audience and news crews and trying the exhibits. “I wish they had something like this when I was a kid,” he said. The hands-on “Music Makers” exhibit is designed to help children discover how sound is created in a variety of ways, how to recognize

different types of sounds and the physical forces behind them, and how to manipulate melody, tempo and rhythm.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Cont’d from page 4) Mayor Rahm Emanuel. I know the media is reporting it was a resignation, but any thinking Chicagoan understands that jumping off a ledge and being pushed off yields pretty much the same results. At the root of it all was the mayor, who tried too many times to inject politics into the educational process instead of letting the superintendent run the district using educational expertise, something the mayor doesn’t have. When the mayor learned he couldn’t successfully browbeat the president of the Chicago Teachers Union, it was the beginning of the end for former superintendent J.C. Brizard. At that moment Brizard became the “fall guy.” The mayor was just waiting for the bus to arrive so he could drag Brizard under it. Well now Brizard is Black history, and we have to see what the new superintendent or C.E.O. or whatever the title of the top dog is does. That now is Barbara ByrdBennett, some call her B3. From everything on paper this New York transplant has all the credentials to be a top flight superintendent. Unfortunately, the Rahm factor is not on paper. Honestly, I don’t think Byrd-Bennett will last as long as the 17 The Chicago Crusader

months Brizard was in office. In a radio interview and a newspaper story, the new superintendent said she has things worked out with Rahm. Let me tell you sister, it won’t be the first time Rahm has lied. This mayor has put so much of his (limited) vision into his version of school reform, he will never take full blame for any educational shortcomings. Had he left Brizard to his own doing the district’s future would look much brighter. If Rahm even raises an eyebrow about Byrd-Bennett’s performance, the city will have a clear view of how the mayor operates. It is time for the community to rally around Byrd-Bennett and let Rahm know she is under our protection and we won’t stand for his foolishness to be her demise. We now must pay even closer attention to what is going on at the CPS Central Office and in all of our schools. Nobody elected Rahm to run the schools and we should not let him keep the impression that we did. Brizard was more than qualified, so is Bryd-Bennet. We cannot compromise our children’s and this city’s future by allowing Rahm to displace some of the best people we have in CPS.
