Cook County Votes to Raise Minimum Wage By J. Coyden Palmer Its good news for those who live in Cook County suburbs as the Board of Commissioners voted Oct. 26 to raise the minimum wage to $13 an hour within the next four years. Commissioners say raising the minimum wage will put the suburbs on par with Chicago, which voted to raise the wage earlier this year. The commissioners also believe the hike for workers who are most vulnerable to becoming a part of the working poor will lift some people out of poverty. Kristi Sanford of Fair Economy Illinois praised the move. “This will bring a raise to over 220,000 workers in the Cook County area who deserve
a raise,” Sanford said. “They need this money; people are making choices between putting food on the table, paying their rent or putting gas in their car.” The measure calls for wages to increase to $10 an hour in July of next year, then go up $1 each additional year until 2020. Home-rule communities in the county can choose to opt out of the program. “The measure approved by the board takes a reasonable approach in raising the minimum wage to $13 per hour by 2020,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in her remarks. “It phases in over time to provide flexibility for employers to adjust and minimize any impact on their bottom line. At $13 an hour, no one will get rich. But that pay rate will help people pay their bills.” Preckwinkle said she knows there will be those opposing the measure. But she said it is important that government try to look out for (Continued on page 3)

Proposed Tax on Sweetened Drinks Leaves Sour Taste in Citizens’ Mouths By J. Coyden Palmer Continuing its role as the highest sales taxed county in the United States, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is adding to the legend by proposing a new tax on sugary drinks, like soda, lemonade and sports drinks. Preckwinkle says the new revenue is needed to close a $174 million budget shortfall. She said without it, there would be cuts to the county’s law enforcement, judicial and health services. Even with the tax, the county is still going to eliminate 300 present vacant posts and lay off dozens of current employees. “I could put forth a proposal that would significantly impair our criminal justice system over the next three years and undermine the progress we are making in public health. It would mean at least 1,000 fewer positions in our criminal justice system, including prosecutors, public defenders, sheriff’s deputies, and critical support staff, programs and services,” said Preckwinkle during an address to County Commissioners on Oct. 12. Preckwinkle added the tax would help improve overall health in the county, thus, reducing the strain on the county’s healthcare system. Sugary liquids have been linked to a sharp increase in diseases, like diabetes, over the last few decades. In the past 30 years, obesity rates have doubled to 600 million worldwide and diabetes to 347 million according to the World Health Organization. Taxing citizens to get them to change their habits has proven to fail in many other industries. Even those who are critical of the sugar industry do not believe taxing sugary products is the answer. “It balances budgets for governments, but doesn’t stop people’s addictions to certain products,” argues Gary Taubes, author of the book, Why We Get Fat. He said the sugar industry plays a large role in the aforementioned diseases, but he said taxing sugary products is not going to solve the problem. Instead, Taubes believes educating the public on what to eat and what not to eat is the better long-term solution, along with getting the food industry to stop placing sugar in so many items. Morris Smith of Coca-Cola and a representative of the Illinois Beverage Association visited the Crusader offices last week. He said the IBA thinks the proposed tax is unfair because it singles out one industry. He went on to say the law would require businesses to pass this tax on and the tax might likely drive consumers somewhere out of Cook County, which would affect the sales of businesses in the county. 2
“In any business, if you lose sales…it could affect how they employ people. They are in business to make money, and if they’re not making money, they can’t employ people,” Smith said. He also disagrees with Preckwinkle’s assessment that the tax will make people choose healthier products. “I don’t think you can tax people into changing behavior,” Smith said. “Even though obesity is a serious issue…you can’t single out a single beverage as the cause and everyone has the choice to eat or drink what they choose. If you look at a state like Alabama, which has a beverage tax—one of the highest in the country—they still also have one of the highest rates of obesity,” Smith said. Anything that is not 100 percent juice would be taxed under the plan. That would include popular sports drinks, like low- or no-calorie Powerade and Gatorade’s G2.
Morris Smith Many people recently switched to those drinks because they are a healthier choice. “I can understand you wanting to tax products that are full of sug-
ar, but what did Gatorade do to the county to get put on this list?” asks Rodney Flynn of Richton Park. “I switched to these products because they are healthier. If they tax them, I will simply drive five minutes to Will County and buy the products. I’m not going to deal with this county tax.” The American Heart Association said 6-9 teaspoons a day in added sugar is a healthy amount. Anything over that is considered excess. Americans consume 19.5 teaspoons of added sugar a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ironically, some of the beverages with the highest sugar counts are 100 percent pure fruit juices, which are exempt from the proposed tax. Nutritionist Dr. Jonny Bowden recommends eliminating fruit juice entirely because of its high sugar content and offers little to no
Toni Preckwinkle fiber that the real fruit does. Drinking fruit juice also makes people hungrier, which can lead to people eating more calories than they need in their daily diet, stated Bowden.
Services for Herb Kent brings closure to Icon’s life President Barack Obama is sending a message by Congressman Bobby Rush to the final services for the renowned DJ Herbert Rogers Kent, as throngs of admirers and listeners are expected to be in attendance. This service, befitting a man who was a Disc Jockey icon for more than seven (7) decades, is expected to be filled with stories and experiences as the city of Chicago mourns the loss of the consummate music authority. What is even more ironic is that Herb was to accompany Farley and the Hot Mix 5 DJ Team on Saturday, October 29th at 9 a.m. to the White House. It had been
Herbert Rogers Kent one of Herb’s greatest desires, according to his long-time girlfriend and companion Linda. It seems that previous attempts for the visit had been changed each time. Herb Kent, the “Cool Gent” as he was popularly known died on Saturday, October 22 at the age of 88. He had hosted his last broadcast on V103 on Saturday morning and had become ill as he prepared to attend an event that evening. It was noted by Joe Vince of the Patch, a community news network, as he quoted Mat Scarano regional president for iHeart Media Chicago, the parent company of V103, “Herb was an iconic talent, who for nearly 70 years entertained millions of listeners in Chicagoland and around the world. His passion for radio and work ethic was second-to-none as Herb worked to the very end, by hosting what unexpectedly was his final V103 broadcast on Saturday morning.” Through his lively exchange with guests and co-workers during his broadcasts, the everyday person felt like they knew Herb Kent, whether they had met him personally or not. He was a walking encyclopedia and was credited with furthering the careers of many of the famous rock and roll artists of the 60s, 70s and 80s. He was also popularly associated with the well-known dance called “Steppin.” Steppin’ parties are regularly held around Chicago and its suburbs and he hosted a “Steppin’ show on television from time-to-time. Local, National Haitians ask for Marshall Plan to rebuild Haiti Seek meeting with Clinton for reparations By Chinta Strausberg Already suffering from the loss of 1,000 victims of Hurricane Matthew, which affected two million Haitians, and not yet recovering from the earthquake in 2010, Judge Lionel Jean Baptiste said the Haitian Diaspora is seeking a Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of their country and reparations. Illinois Haitian leaders have joined with their Florida-based peers and organizations and written a letter to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton listing their priorities—many of them urgent. “We’ve suffered from all types of calamities. We’ve had to pay reparations to France— the equivalent of
$25 billion in today’s money,” said Baptiste. “The U.S. invaded and occupied Haiti depleting its treasury. Haiti has also suffered extreme population loss caused by the U.S.-backed Duvalier dictatorship that terrorized the Haitian people over the course of 29 years (1957-1986).” Baptiste cited data from the World Bank claiming that 86 percent of Haitian professionals live outside of the country. “With the rebuilding, will come reintegration of the Haitian Diaspora and the long-term stabilization of Haiti,” he stated That is why 27 Florida-based organizations and 24 other prominent Floridians have written a letter to Clinton demanding reforms and social justice for the embattled Haitians, including asking Homeland Security to immediately re-des-

The Healthcare Consortium of Illinois is putting more pressure on banks to follow the Community Reinvestment Act and give to the communities in which they are housed. The Community Reinvestment Act is intended to encourage depository institutions to help meet the credit needs of the communities in which they operate, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, consistent with safe and sound operations. It was enacted by the Congress in 1977 (12 U.S.C. 2901) and is implemented by Regulation BB (12 CFR 228). The regulation was substantially revised in May 1995 and updated again in August 2005. VOTE AND VOTE EARLY IF YOU CAN To say that voting in the upcoming presidential election is almost a life or death matter is not hyperbole. And please vote early if you can. The next president of the United States will be in a position to drastically change America. He or she will appoint new Supreme Court Justices which will influence laws for years to come. African Americans, in particular, should be vigilant about this issue, since the community has often borne the brunt of injustices meted out by the court system. And people who say that the election is “rigged” and that you should not vote are themselves participating in the rigging process. If they can encourage people to stay away from the voting booth, the opposition gets the advantage. If you question the importance of the vote, ask yourself this question: Why are there so many attempts to intimidate voters if the vote isn’t important? Logic would dictate that voting must be very important, or authorities wouldn’t go through the trouble of introducing voter ID laws and other blockages. The other thing to remember is that all politics are local. Elected officials can, through various avenues, influence what happens in your community. It is crucial, therefore, that everyone old enough to vote should participate in the process. What everyone must understand is that NOT VOTING IS VOTING; when you don’t vote enemies of your community get to have their say, but you don’t. This can be called voting by apathy. This year, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton is going toe to toe with Republican businessman Donald J. Trump in a bid for the presidency. Many people are allegedly throwing their support behind Trump because of his so-called business acumen. They ignore the fact that he has had to declare bankruptcy several times, has mistreated employees and vendors, and engaged in questionable hiring practices. More important, however, is the fact that we should not want our country to operate like a business – businesses are not democracies! In fact, capitalism and democracy are, in some ways, antithetical to one another. Donald Trump has made it very clear that he is not a particular fan of democracy. At press time, he has not even committed to accepting the outcome of the election if he does not win. This is a huge red flag. Add to this his admiration of Russia’s Vladimir Putin and you get a full picture. He tells you who he is: he has laid down a plan that if implemented will indeed take America back to more regressive times. He will deport immigrants, repeal “Obamacare,” add an amendment to the United States constitution, implement “law and order,” and more. Remember, Trump was the business mogul who took out four full-page ads in New York City newspapers calling for a return of the death penalty for the Central Park 5, who were eventually exonerated. Apparently, racism was at the foundation of his venom toward these teens. His obvious bigotry is also evident in his unabashed misogyny and in his attitude toward Muslims. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, though not perfect, has clearly had a long life of public service, much of it focusing on helping women and children. She is truly self-made, not getting her start with a loan of millions from her father as did Trump. She used her brains to get where she is. Moreover, she has always been concerned about making healthcare accessible to all. If The Affordable Care Act, i.e., Obamacare is repealed, there will once again be millions of people without healthcare access. One of the best aspects of Obamacare is that people are not being penalized for having pre-existing conditions. Now, why are we encouraging you to vote early? Basically because voter intimidation and shenanigans targeting minorities will probably cause some citizens to be deemed ineligible to vote. Voting early will allow voters the chance to challenge and to correct whatever situation arises in time for their vote to count. Finally, we have been warned that some voters using computers have voted for Clinton, but the computer registered the vote for Trump! Be cautious, be aware, vote, and vote early if possible. It is the best way to make your voice heard. A luta continua.
It is extremely rare that one can reach the age of 60 and have something to stay with him or her that entire time. For many of us Chicagoans at that age, and even older, that something was actually someone named Herb Kent. I doubt that back in the 60s any of us had thoughts that as we reached retirement age we would still be hearing the voice of Herb (the Cool Gent) Kent. The fact that we will never hear that voice live over the air anymore is a blow to the city. It is a loss that is extremely tough to quantify. His recent passing tells us that Herb Kent was not only enduring; he was without equal. It is pretty difficult to find anyone Black who grew up in the city in the 50s,60s or 70s who doesn’t have a favorite Herb Kent story or memory. The term now to describe what we used to call disc jockeys is “on-air talent.” Herb was so much more than just “a talent.” I think we would have to categorize him as an institution. While it wasn’t unusual for people in his industry to job hop or station hop Herb did so and always took much of his following from the station with him. I don’t recall anyone working in radio in the last 50 years who had the creativity, common man touch and wit of Herb Kent. I

It also seemed you could ask Herb a question about any singer or group from the heydays of Motown or the Philadelphia Sound, and of course Chicago; and he had a funny story about them. If there is such a thing as a radio renaissance man Herb Kent certainly fit the bill - DJ, emcee, party DJ and honoree. Despite all the accolades and praise, Herb was unfazed by it all. In fact, Herb seemed more comfortable lauding others than being recognized for his achievements. He also was one who didn’t try to hide his shortcomings, which in my opinion, made him even more endearing. Hopefully, there are some young people just starting out in radio or some part of the broadcast industry who are smart enough to closely study Herb’s life and use it as a blueprint for his or her career. An Epiphany – Sweet Home Alabama Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford The Coal Industry has been under attack since the beginning of the Obama Administration. The President has stated that “I want to kill coal.” Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has said, “I want to put all of the coal workers out of business.” They have caused an immense amount of damage. An enormous amount of coalmines has closed and a noticeable percentage of coal companies are in bankruptcy. The economic damage is real and its affect will hurt our nation and bring growth and profit to foreign nations like China and India who will fill in the gaps left by our foolish actions. It is depressing and I began to wonder if our coal industry is going to make it. This past week Kay and I took a tour in Alabama. It was sponsored by an energy group known as PACE (I have a board seat). This “Alabama Energy Tour” showed electric officials and others just how thriving the state is when it comes to energy resources. We went to the Warrior Met Coal Mine #7, the Miller Coal Power Plant, and the Nucor Steel Plant and cruised on the Megan Parker, a boat that pushes barges loaded with coal, operated by Parker Towing. On Saturday,
we closed the tour by going to the Alabama vs. Texas A&M football game. The Warrior Met Coal Mine #7 would be horrifying to many people. That is why Kay and I sat on the “sidelines” during this part of the tour. Participants were taken underground for over a mile into the earth. It was pitch dark and the only light was generated from the participants’ headgear. Once hitting the bottom, they went by car on tracks to the part of the plant that was being currently “clawed” for coal. Every now and then a transport would come and scoop up the clawed coal and deliver it to waiting rail cars for transporting to customers (plant facilities). After this 3 hour venture the participants returned and washed the coal powder from their necks and faces. The coal would travel by railcar to local power plants, storage areas, steel plants and industrial facilities. Some trips would be a few miles away while others would go across the nation. This world has a very strong dependence on coal. Coal is essential to our way of living. If some politicians and activists think they can “kill coal” they are terribly mistaken. Eliminating coal from our nation will not stop the need for coal. We can make the by-products ourselves which will be the economical thing to do or we can buy it from foreign nations who have
Harry C. Alford enough sense to produce the many bi-products and sell them to us. Prepare yourselves for finding out all of the by-products of coal: methane (oven burners in your home), fuel, carbon dioxide, artificial silk, acetylene, soda water, briquets, sugar substitute, synthetic rubber, linoleum, TNT explosives, electrical insulation, sulfuric acid, street lighting, paint pigments, sulfur, smelling salts, fertilizers, baking powder, rubber cement, laughing gas, ammonia, electric plugs, food preservatives, fire proofing, carbolic
acid, electric plugs, billiard balls, perfumes, medicines, moth balls, paint thinner, storage batteries, fungicides, storage batteries, insecticides, tar, insulation, paving, roofing, disinfectant, varnish, wood preservatives and gypsum (dry wall). Another byproduct is steel by fusing coal carbon with iron ore. Clearly, there can be no America without the utilization of coal. As you can see coal plays a major role in the American economy. Fortunately, gains have been made in the cleaning process, which makes our air cleaner at a growing pace. The Miller Plant Tour showed us how many of these by-products are produced and distributed throughout our nation. The Nucor Steel Plant was equally informative. Pipes, rebar, steel sheets, etc. were being made right before our eyes. Iron ore and carbon coal were blended via extreme heat (we were in a plant with the average room air temperature of 130 degrees). It was simply amazing to watch the finished products. Facilities like Nucor have provided the
materials to build America and will continue this great service during the future. Coal is a vital component to our infrastructure and will remain a vital resource. God put it here for us to use and for hundreds of years in the future we will continue to produce with improvements and environmentally safe methods. If anyone doubts this, take a drive through your city. See the construction, cranes, contractors and the developments they are building. It could not have been done without coal. As for the football game, it was simply a blast! Alabama remains undefeated and rated number one in the nation. It was a sight to see (better to be in). 105,000 cheering fans standing up most of the game. The citizens of Alabama have a great football culture and a fantastic reserve of energy materials. Black America’s still elusive dream of homeownership: Mortgage denials persist By Charlene Crowell (NNPA Newswire Columnist) In recent weeks, a spate of news coverage has referred to America’s “inner cities.” Some may even interpret it as a new code word for minorities, usually referring to Blacks and Latinos. Yet today, according to Richard Rothstein, a research associate with the Economic Policy Institute, the inner city experience does not encompass all of Black America. More Blacks now live in the suburbs than in urban ghettos, and approximately one-third of Black Americans have incomes higher than that of the respective median earnings. So why is access to homeownership still so out of reach for consumers of color? Why do so many Blacks and Latinos continue to suffer disproportionate denials for mortgage loans? A recent analysis of the 2015 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) sheds further light on the fact that even years after a national recovery from www.chicagocrusader.coM
the housing collapse, the American Dream remains elusive for much of Black America. “The HMDA data has shown a persistent difference in denial rates by race and ethnicity and this year is no exception,” wrote CRL. “20.8 percent of African-American applicants were denied a loan in 2015 compared to 16.1 percent of Hispanic applicants and 10 percent of non-Hispanic white applicants.” Last year more than 6 million home purchase mortgages were made, but only 51,202 or 2.7 percent were conventional loans to Black home buyers. By comparison, non-Hispanic Whites received 1,361,564 conventional loans, and Latinos received 96,975 of these loans. Conventional loans are the most widely available and often the most cost-effective and sustainable mortgages available. The vast majority of loans to Black consumers in 2015 continued a trend that has grown stronger year to year since the housing meltdown: government-backed loans like FHA or VA account for the overwhelming majority of loans made to Black consumers – 120,618, more than double that for conventional
loans. Latino consumers received more with 162,317 loans; but far less compared to 765,880 for Whites. Government secured mortgage loans are an important source of credit and also tend to be more costly than other home loans. Now contrast those dismal numbers with those from the Census Bureau that found Black Americans are more than 13 percent of the nation’s population, and 1.8 million ages 25 and older hold advanced degrees. So how is it that when Black college graduation rates are growing and many are living in the suburbs with higher earnings, why are conventional mortgage loans so rare for Black borrowers? One reason could be that the average credit score needed to get a loan has risen substantially. In 2015 the average credit score for all new loan originations neared 750, a near 50 point increase from the average used in 2001. Historically, federal housing policies also gave advantages to Whites that were not available to Blacks. As a result, many Whites were able to build up significant wealth that contributes to stronger credit profiles. At the same time, unequal mortgage
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
Charlene Crowell lending policies made it harder for Blacks to own homes and thereby denied many wealth-building opportunities that could be shared from one generation to another. “Although the nation’s banks have largely recovered from the financial crisis,” continued CRL, “the 2015 HMDA data illustrate
that they are not using their rebuilt capital to create homeownership opportunities, particularly not for borrowers of color and low-income families.” “Before the Great Recession,” added Rothstein, “half of all African-Americans owned their own homes. By 2013, it had fallen to 44 percent. Before the Great Recession, the net worth of AfricanAmerican homeowners averaged $144,000. By 2013, it had fallen to $80,000. This was not a natural calamity that befell the Black middle class but one precipitated in part by unlawful banking and governmental practices that have mostly gone unremedied.” When it comes to homeownership, the facts are clear. The real question for Black America is, ‘what do we intend to do about it?’ Economic inclusion – not exclusion – would offer a real chance to build more Black economic security. CONCEPTS AFRICAN PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.
Dr. Conrad Worrill At this current stage of history in the Black Liberation Movement, it is important that key concepts be revisited and re-discussed in our continued efforts to seek clarity on certain ideas that are fundamental
to the white supremacy foundation of America. First, there is the idea and concept of the “Maafa.” When we discuss genocide against African People in America, we must also discuss the Maafa, because it was this Maafa that has historically created the on-going genocidal conditions inflicted against African People in America. When we use the term “Maafa” we are talking about an African term used to describe tremendous suffering, indescribable atrocities, disaster, calamity, catastrophe, or injustice. This term is used to refer to the protracted suffering of African people and culture as a consequence of the Transatlantic Slave Trade System. As the African Maafa researcher Michael Scott explains— “No African was waiting as a slave to be traded to the Europeans. In all regions of Africa, from which Africans were transported, the African was involved in a brutal war declared by the European aggressor, interested in exploiting the human and natural resources of the richest continent on the earth.” Further, Brother Scott reveals, “These Africans who became prisoners of war were placed in deten-
tion camps and then transported to the Americas to be enslaved by the benefactors of their captors. No African began his or her ordeal as a slave. Africans were reduced to slavery by conquest.” It is important for African People to understand and internalize these brief historical facts. Just as the Jews, or any other group of people in the world, internalize their holocaust, and act on it, African People must come to the collective reality of our Maafa and act on it also. Finally, Brother Scott instructs us that, “Our foreparents were innocent victims of these heinous systems of forced labor. They were never able to comprehend being seized in early morning attacks on their villages by vicious raiding parties. They were never able to understand why they were being sold by the avaricious middle men. They could never fathom why they were being marched in fetters and chains to the coast where they were bartered for European merchandise especially rum and guns. They could never appreciate why they were being warehoused in hell-like dungeons in Elmina or Goree.” So now that we have some insight into the idea and concept of
the Maafa, it should make it easier to understand the idea and concept of genocide. In Olumenji’s book, White Genocide, Black Obsolescence, The Question of Black Survival In White America, he defines genocide very succinctly. He says genocide is the “deliberate and systematic destruction of Black people by white American socio-economic and cultural forces.” According to Brother Olumenji, America has created an ideology that justifies the annihilation of African people in this country. This is the function of genocide by those who inflict it on a mass of people. That is, they create a rationale for the annihilation and then try to explain that it does not exist. This was the case in the CIA involvement in cocaine distribution in Los Angeles in which the profits were used to finance the CIA backed Contra army in Nicaragua. This involvement of the CIA caused a proliferation of the distribution and sale of crack cocaine across the African Communities of America, causing serious devastation to our communities. The United States Government tried to downplay the CIA’s involvement in this incident by saying
that this is an isolated situation and in fact this is not true. As a result of the Maafa and the genocide against African People in America, we must step up the demand for Reparations as the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, N’COBRA, is advocating as are many other African organizations throughout the world. Reparations simply means repair for injuries, harm and damages. As it has been pointed out, over and over again, we were made chattel and worked for more than threehundred years without pay or other compensation for the value of our labor. The white man and white woman stole and criminally appropriated the services and the value of three-hundred years of labor and then passed it on through inheritance to their children. This process helped create the United States of America and this is fundamental to our demands for Reparations. We must continue to discuss these ideas in our efforts to dismantle our mental shackles. Every race and every ethnic group in the world protect their interests and African People should and must do no less.
VOTER FRAUD AND VOTER SUPPRESSION By Julianne Malveaux I watched the October 19 Presidential debate in both awe and horror. Awe – I truly do not understand Mr. Trump’s temerity to lie, interrupt, sniff, sigh, and interject offensive comments (“such a nasty woman”) in lieu of disagreement. The horror came when Mr. Trump asserted that he would not necessarily accept the result of an election he has described as “rigged.” (Actually, in Trump’s world, anything that does not go his way is rigged – debates, primary elections, Emmy Awards). Trailing in the polls, Mr. Trump is playing the same racial games he has played throughout the elections, suggesting that there is massive voter fraud in cities like Philadelphia and Detroit, cities with large African American populations, that dead people are voting, and that millions of voter registration records are wrong. There have been dozens of reports that refute the Trump claims. A Department of Justice report indicates that only 31 of more than 1 billion votes cast since 2000 have been fraudulent. The Brennan Center for Justice, housed at the New York Uni6
versity School of Law has studied voter fraud and found that allegations are most often unfounded (https://www.brennancenter.org/publication/truth-about-voter-fraud). Trump also cited a Pew Center study that indicated that one in eight voter registrations might be inaccurate. But Pew says inaccurate registration may not be fraudulent ones. As an example, some people have not changed their addresses, and will do so before they attempt to vote again. These folks aren’t committing fraud, they’ve simply moved. The Pew Center says that our nation’s voter registration system needs an upgrade (http://www.pewtrusts.org/~/me dia/legacy/uploadedfiles/pcs_assets/2012/pewupgradingvoterregistrationpdf.pdf). They have not identified massive voter fraud as a problem. Donald Trump, though, is the master of manipulative repetition. Just like he hammered on “Little Marco,” “Low Energy Jeb” and “Crooked Hillary,” now he is hammering on voter fraud, whether it is accurate or not. At least one factchecker has detailed how wrong Trump is (http://www.factcheck.org/2016/10/trumps-bogus-voterfraud-claims/) and has described his claims as “bogus.”
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2016
Dr. Julianne Malveaux Claims of voter fraud divert attention from a more significant issue, the voter suppression that may make it more difficult for many to vote. Too many states have instituted new voter ID laws, reduced the number of early voting days, consolidated precincts (forcing people to travel further to vote), and purged people from voting registration polls. Several organizations are providing backup for voters, in-
cluding the website http://www.iwillvote.com that allows people to check their voter registration. But with registration deadlines closing in this handful of days before the election, it is likely that some people who want to vote will not have the opportunity. This voter suppression has been deliberately, and it has had a partisan skewing. Why can a gun registration be used as appropriate voter identification, but not a student ID? Rule shifting has gained the attentions of conservative appeals courts. As an example, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Texas voided Texas Voter ID laws. Wisconsin’s voter restrictions were also disallowed. Most notably, a federal appeals court shot North Carolina down and, were uncharacteristically critical. The court wrote that, “Although the new provisions target African Americans with almost surgical precision, they constitute inapt remedies for the problems assertedly justifying them and, in fact, impose cures for problems that did not exist.” Is there voter fraud? If only 31 cases, out of a billion votes, were found fraudulent, we can say that there is a bit of fraud, something that is less than a fraction of one

percent. At the same time, voting restrictions imposed in 2014 and 2015 were set to block over 1.3 million voters in Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin, all swing states (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/07/29/courts-smashvoter-suppression-just-in-time-forelectionday.html). Should we be more concerned about voter fraud or voter suppression, about the 31 who may have been fraudulent, or the 1.3 million who have been deliberately and “surgically” excluded from the voting process. African Americans know rigged elections. Our voices have too often been rigged out of the electoral process. Fannie Lou Hamer was beaten to within an inch of her life because she dared organize people to vote. Medgar Evers was killed because he dared organize Black folks to vote. Our people overcame grandfather clauses, voter tests, and all kinds of other nonsense in order to vote. We know rigged elections. We know voter suppression. When Donald Trump talks about elections being rigged, he exhibits, again, his historical ignorance. Every time Black folks were excluded from the voting process, we accepted the out(Continued on page 7) www.chicagocrusader.com

Chicagoans Speak-Out Against GOP Following Final Presidential Debate Following the third and final presidential debate, women and men spoke out against Trump and the GOP’s long-standing physical and legislative attacks on women. The voices of diverse and powerful workers, teachers, leaders, immigrants and activists resonated today at Wacker and Wabash with the resounding mantra, “Women Demand Respect.” “Americans do not want candidates who will further divide us or strip away the rights of half of our population,” said Donna Miller, Board Chair for Planned Parenthood Illinois Action. She went on to say, “we need a champion, not a demeaning bully,” as she pointed out the countless anti-women policies pursued in Illinois over the last twenty years influenced by a conservative agenda that goes beyond Trump. “We must tell our friends and our families that it’s important for us to know these issues and vote on these issues. Why? Because women demand respect Trump has been offensive for months, and the GOP’s anti-women
Women Demand Respect! agenda has been offensive for even longer. Trump was nominated to represent the Republican Party, and his anti-women and hateful sentiments are perpetuated by the conservative officials who support him. “We are lucky to live in a state where the question is, by what margin voters will reject Donald Trump,” said Adrienne Alexander, AFSCME Council 31. “Unfortunately elected officials like the Governor of Illinois continue to support Donald Trump. We have an obligation to speak out against hate and violence, and support for a nominee for president that embodies these things should not be acceptable for anyone who purports to represent all of us.” Oren Jacobson, co-founder of Men4Choice added, “this isn’t simply about defeating a candidate who brags about sexual assault. It’s about recognizing our responsibility to push back on peers engaging in this kind of speech or behavior. We must demonstrate the respect women deserve in both word and deed.” Women not only deserve respect, today they were demanding it. Legendary director Ron OJ Parson does such good work that he is currently in charge of two productions, one on the North Side and one in the Northern suburbs. He is directing “Apartment 3A” at the Windy City Playhouse in the Roscoe Village area, and a 20year anniversary revival of East Texas Hot Links in Glencoe. His live theatre legacy runs many years, even when many productions were strictly geared toward white audiences or on the other hand toward Black audiences. Diversity is the word, now, since an audience member can see a Black woman playing one of the sisters in Anton Chekhov’s “Three Sisters” or, as in “Hamilton,” a tall Black guy playing one of the founding fathers George Washington. “There is more diversity in casting at many theatres, now, and the audiences have grown since I moved to Chicago in 1994,” said Parson. “For instance, this year the Court Theatre has a well-rounded diverse season.” Parson says he doesn’t necessarily pick the plays that he directs, but playwrights or theatres may seek out his expertise. “I usually don’t pick plays, they pick me. I wish I had the luxury of picking every play I direct,” he says. “At the Court, I have some input, of course, but usually the theatre has a play they want to do and they think it might be a good fit for me.” He admits that a strong marketing plan also helps in making a production successful, but marketing has to be aimed at all segments of the theatre-going population. He says that a good director will bring the full experience to bear when working with a play and cast members. “No one wants to be pigeonholed and limited, and the fact that I am Black makes me a Black director, but I don’t just direct plays for people of color.” Parson stressed the importance of reality-based theatre

In order to attract younger audiences, diversity must be a part of the dynamic of theatre,” he said. “It opens up many opportunities that otherwise would be lost and neglected.” Parson commented on today’s playwrights who are bringing good theatre in the manner of the late August Wilson. “Dominique Morisseau, Marcus Gardley, Katori Hall, Javon Johnson, Lydia Diamond and Keith Josef Adkins are a few of the notable playwrights.” Morisseau’s “Sunset Baby,” which Parson directed, was just recognized by the Joseph Jefferson Awards with its nomination of the lead actress, AnJi White. Parson attributes this recognition to the fact that

“Sunset Baby” was “a good play with good direction, good writing and good actors.” There are many challenges around directing, which include having the original vision and managing the entire production. “You also have to be persistent, have patience and perseverance,” Parson said. But he added that it is good to have fun in the process. He commented about the stability that being named Resident Artist at the Court Theatre in Hyde Park gives him. “This is rare for a freelance director, and there is more exposure on a regular basis,” he said. “I owe that to the Joyce Foundation,” which recently awarded a grant to the Court Theatre. Parson has fond memories of directing “Let Me Live,” by OyamO, which he directed at the Goodman Theatre and Steppenwolf at the same time. He has also directed more than 21 productions of August Wilson’s work, including “The Piano Lesson” at the inauguration of the Congo Square Theatre, an event which the late Wilson attended. “Apartment 3A” follows Annie as she attempts to get her life back on track after a recent painful breakup and impulsive day at work, where she experiences a meltdown on live radio. And while the apartment may be the best find in town and the best apartment in the building, Annie can’t shake her bad day. She is met by a mysterious new neighbor, and she thinks things are (Continued on page 19) www.chicagocrusader.com

Hillary Clinton for President This election is not as much about saving President Barack Obama’s legacy as it is preventing Republicans from throwing out the baby with the bath water. As Americans we must continue to protect what works and make improvements where needed, both on a national and local level. Electing a woman as President of the United States in 2016 is as history making as electing the first African American man. It might even be transformational. It all comes down to voter turnout. If Hillary Clinton wins and brings other Democrats along with her to Washington, her party might be able to take over
the Senate. Only five seats are needed for Democrats to gain control. In the short term, that could translate into an African American woman being confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. Since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, earlier this year, the nine-member Supreme Court is without its 5-4 conservative voting advantage. As a result, the Senate refused to consider the president’s nomination of District of Columbia Circuit Court Judge Merrick Garland until after the election of Obama’s successor. He has taken a leadership role in advocating on energy issues, consumer product safety and protection, infrastructure projects and quality healthcare. Most recently, he introduced a bill that would create the Bronzeville-Black Metropolis National Heritage Area. The legislation authorizes up to $1 million in federal matching funds per year to provide national recognition of the African American story in Chicago from the Civil War until today. Rush sits on the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the subcommittees on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, Communications and Technology, and is a ranking member on Energy and Power.
U.S. SENATE PUNCH BALLOT #9
TAMMY DUCKWORTH Currently representing the 8th Congressional District, Tammy Duckworth is running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Mark Kirk. This is the same seat once held by Roland Burris, Barack Obama and Carol Moseley Braun. In congress since 2013, Duckworth is the first Asian American woman representing Illinois and the first disabled woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Born in Thailand, her father was an Army officer in the Vietnam War and her mother Chinese. An Iraq War veteran, Duckworth was injured severely when the U.S. Army helicopter she was co-piloting came under enemy fire. She suffered the loss of both legs and damage to her right arm. She continued to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard and retired in 2014. Duckworth was appointed Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and later served as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Although Duckworth’s outreach to the Black community during her senate race is disappointing, this is one of those times when too much is at stake. The Illinois seat is one of the five that could help take back the senate and give a President Clinton the votes she needs to enact her policy agenda--which includes job creation, raising the minimum wage, making college more affordable and criminal justice reform--all of which Duckworth supports. Duckworth serves on the Committee on Armed Services and Subcommittees on Tactical Air and Land Forces, and Oversight and Investigations. She also sits on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and Subcommittees on Energy Policy, Health Care and Entitlements, and Economic Growth, Job Creation and Regulatory Affairs.

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE, 2ND DISTRICT PUNCH BALLOT #22 Robin Kelly took office in 2013, following a special election to replace Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. She is the first woman to represent the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Chicago’s far southeast side, and the suburbs of southern Cook County, Will County and Kankakee County. The population is 55 percent Black, 37 percent white, 13 percent Latino and .8 percent Asian. Kelly is known for being a strong advocate against gun violence. As a former Illinois state representative and U.S. representative, she is a champion of common sense gun reforms and responsible community policing. In August, the incumbent hosted the inaugural 2016 Congressional Black Caucus on Black Women & Girls symposium to explore public policy and community-based solutions to eliminating the significant barriers and disparities experienced by Black women. Since being elected, Kelly has worked to increase job opportunities, reduce health disparities, and increase public safety across the state. She also supports a South Suburban Airport. Serving since 1997, he was elected to the 7th Congressional District following the retirement of Cardiss Collins. The district represents a diverse population covering the city’s West Side, Gold Coast, Chinatown, Bronzeville, Englewood and Humboldt Park communities. Davis also represents parts of suburban Bellwood, Forest Park, Oak Park and Maywood. The district is 55 percent Black, 32 percent white, 13 percent Latino, 5 percent Asian and 6 percent other. A former educator, community organizer, health administrator, civil rights advocate and city and county elected official, Davis is well respected throughout the nation for his knowledge of healthcare issues. He also is an advocate for criminal justice reform. Early in President Obama’s administration, he signed the Second Chance Act, which provides transitional assistance to ex-offenders coping with the challenges of reentry. It reduces recidivism, helps reunite families and protects communities, enhances public safety and saves taxpayer dollars. Davis was a sponsor of the bipartisan bill in an effort to provide resources to the more than 650,000 offenders released from state and federal prisons every year. The West Side congressman serves on the Committee on Ways and Means, Oversight and Government Reform including subcommittees: Economic Growth, Job Creation and Regulatory Affairs; Energy Policy, Health Care and Entitlements; and Subcommittee on

Elected as the youngest African American to the senate in 1998, the Maywood resident became Senate Assistant Majority Leader in 2009. She is a leading voice on women’s issues, healthcare, criminal justice and education. Recently, a bill she sponsored to limit long-term suspensions and expulsions in Illinois schools became law. The legislation also eliminates the use of zero-tolerance policies, which disproportionately target African American students. Lightford is chairing a commission to find new ways to fund schools. Illinois is ranked as the worst in the country in school funding. The 4th Senate District includes a dozen suburban communities in western Cook County and the Austin community on Chicago’s West Side.

SUSANA MENDOZA COMPTROLLER PUNCH #16 The current Chicago City Clerk knows what it is like to be first. She is the first woman to ever hold the office and if elected Illinois Comptroller, Mendoza will be the first Democratic woman in charge of the people’s checkbook. Before being elected city clerk, she served six terms in the Illinois House of Representatives. As city clerk, she transformed the Chicago City Vehicle Sticker sales program from annually to year-round. Disbanding the 105-year-old program, proved to streamline the process, improve customer service, lower cost and save money. Earning her the “Bright Idea Award” from Harvard University. Running an efficient, effective and transparent office as comptroller are Mendoza’s top priorities. She also promises to be an advocate for the people of Illinois—especially, the state’s most vulnerable. Electing a democrat, as comptroller, will give the office the independence it needs from Republican Governor Bruce Rauner. The governor, following the sudden death of Judy Baar Topinka, appointed the current comptroller. Like the governor, the incumbent has no government experience. We believe Mendoza’s legislative understanding of state government and management experience will be invaluable to the Office of Comptroller.
JULIANA STRATTON STATE REPRESENTATIVE, 5TH DISTRICT PUNCH BALLOT # 42 Running unopposed in the general election, Juliana Stratton will bring an experienced voice to Springfield on issues of children’s advocacy, criminal justice reform, education and civil rights. A lawyer, she is the director of the Center for Public Safety and Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Stratton won one of the most hotly contested and expensive house races in Illinois when she defeated state Rep. Ken Dunkin for the Democratic nomination in the city’s 5th House District. All total, both sides spent more than $6 million on the race. Much of Stratton’s money came from unions and big labor organizations, while campaign financial disclosures show the majority of Dunkin’s contributors had ties to Gov. Bruce Rauner. The district stretches from Grand Crossing on the South Side to Goethe Street on the Near North Side. This seat is seen as crucial to providing House Speaker
DER ELECTION EDITION
DOROTHY BROWN CLERK OF THE CIRCUIT COURT PUNCH BALLOT # 64 For the past year, incumbent Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown has been in a fight on two fronts. First, to retain the office she has held since 2001 and second against the Democratic Party leaders, who withdrew their endorsement of Brown amid an FBI investigation into the sale of a building given to her husband. To no one’s surprise, Brown won re-election without the leaders’ support, just as she did in her initial race for circuit court clerk. The Cook County Court System is the second largest court system in the United States and is a very complex and complicated legal operation with 2,000 employees and over a $100 million budget. Brown is uniquely qualified for the office both as an attorney and Certified Public Accountant. Contrary to her critics, she has implemented many common sense, revenue-generating procedures in the clerk’s office, and continues to digitize court documents to improve access.
Foxx says she would leave cases like McDonald’s and the many others that have come forth since last year to independent prosecutors, to prevent the “politicization” of police shootings.
KAREN YARBROUGH RECORDER OF COOK COUNTY PUNCH BALLOT # 65 Karen Yarbrough is the recorder of Cook County, Illinois. First elected in 2012, Yarbrough is running unopposed for re-election in the general election on November 8, 2016. Yarbrough is a former Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing District 7 from 2001 to 2013. She is faced with political operatives that desire to eliminate her office and will undoubtedly be faced with a revived call for its elimination after the November 8 election. We oppose the elimination and endorse her reelection.

BARBARA MCGOWAN PUNCH # 51 KIM FOXX COOK COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY PUNCH BALLOT # 62 Kim Foxx is the embodiment of when preparation meets opportunity. An accomplished prosecutor and fierce advocate for children and families, Foxx defeated the incumbent Cook County State’s Attorney overwhelmingly. In response to public outrage over the release of police dashcam video showing the shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, the former assistant state’s attorney announced her candidacy. Her qualifications and personal story of overcoming homelessness and a mother struggling with mental illness and drug addiction, helped to focus attention on McDonald’s tragic life and so many other children. A Chicago native raised in the Cabrini-Green housing projects, she worked in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office for 12 years.

The night I went to see Kevin Hart’s new live comedy concert film What Now I was at the end of a very stressful, messed up day. All I wanted to do was go home and get under the bed covers. I couldn’t do that because I had made the commitment to see the screening of the film. I am so happy I did. About 20 minutes before the actual film begins, what I thought was going to be previews turned out to be a mini-film starring Kevin Hart as Agent 54, a James Bond type character; Haley Berry as his girl Friday, Don Cheadle as Don Cheadle, and many other great cameo appearances. The audience couldn’t believe they were seeing these top stars acting in a skit like this. This little film is a good lead into the comedy concert. We were already laughing and I was beginning to feel my shoulders relax a little. The main event begins and Kevin pops up out of the stage in the Lincoln Financial Field in his hometown of Philadelphia to a record breaking crowd of 53,000 people. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Living full to die empty. This statement depicts the life of my former co-worker and legendary radio personality Herbert Rogers Kent who made his transition last Saturday night. What I loved most is he never stopped living his passion. At 88 years young, he continued to live his life never skipping a beat. It was so obvious that he loved what he did and did
what he loved until his end. Some of Herb’s achievements included authoring an autobiography, hosting a television show titled, “Stepping.” In 2009, he was listed in the Guinness World Record as the longest running DJ on the radio for over 65 years. His career spanned 11 radio stations with the most popular stations being WVON and V103 where he worked the last three decades. The Guinness World Record also

many titles he held during his career. He was also inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame, as well as the National R & B Hall of Fame. Herb was confident and comfortable with what God had given him with a natural gift of gab. Even when challenged at a young age by a professor that admitted that although ‘he had the best voice in the class, there was no place in radio for a Negro.’ Did this stop Herb from pursuing his dream? Thankfully he was not deterred and continued 70 years strong. With the last 30 years being one of the highest rated shows on Sundays in Chicago radio. Unstoppable, Herb finished his final course gracing his listeners with musical favorites and a distinctive voice that can be stored in our memory bank for years to come —hours away from emptying his last breath. A few weeks ago, I posed the question of how will you be remembered when you’re laid to rest. At God’s appointed time this question will become real and the answer will come based on what
you did or did not do. Also, in the previous article, I talked about the dash is an indication of how well you live each day. Abraham Lincoln said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years.” Herb was full of life and died empty using what was gifted to him. He was twice blessed. Over the years, he blessed the careers of several artists while playing their music and using his voice, humor and love to bless millions of faithful listeners for 70 years with the best in Dusties. (Our thoughts and prayers are extended to his daughter Robbin and longtime girlfriend, Linda.) The Crusader Gospel Corner J.J. Hairston and Youthful Praise continues to make waves with “You Deserve It,” the praise and worship song that’s sweeping the nation. This week the new single charted at No. 3 on the Billboard Magazine Gospel Digital Songs sales chart. The song continues to gain traction on the radio as well as charting No. 12 on the BDS Gospel Radio Chart. “I’m really excited about how the song has taken a life of its own. It’s been a blessing to see so many churches around the nation, as well as other artists minister such a powerful song,” says Hairston. The rousing song of praise is the first single released by Hairston’s newly formed JamesTown Music label, which is exclusively distributed through Entertainment One Distribution. This single, “You Deserve It,” was recorded as a part of Youthful Praise’s live concert recording at City of Praise Ministries in Hyattsville, Maryland. Thousands were in attendance at the session that covers the group’s fifteen year recording history with updates of their classic songs like “Lord, You’re Mighty,” “Awesome God,” “Resting On His Promise,” “After This,” and “Incredible God, Incredible Praise.” *** J.J. has kept a busy schedule lately with many appearances including WBLS’s Circle of Sisters and Southern University’s celebrity packed Night of Restoration. Since that time, the group has become one of the most in-demand acts in gospel music with a string of hit albums and bestselling radio singles. That means with the Cubs in the World Series this week, the White Sox fans are ramping up their taunts and insults as Cubs fans continue with the obnoxious behavior they often exhibit regardless of their team’s record. With the Cubs now in the World Series for the first time since World War II, Sox fans are nervous and fear their worst nightmare; the Cubs winning the World Series. “I already know it will be hard to live in this city anymore because they will never shut up about it,” said Carlton Hales from the Woodlawn community, a lifelong Sox fan. “I’ve been giving all of my family and friends grief about the Cubs their entire lives and if the tables get turned on me, I really might get run out of town.” Hales represents the feelings of many White Sox fans. When their team won the World Series in 2005 for the first time in 87 years, it gave them bragging rights over the Cubs. But with the turnaround of the North Side club in recent years and the Sox going downward, the only thing Sox fans had on the Cubs was their 2005
championship. “Oh trust me my son has had no problem reminding me about it whenever the subject comes up,” said James Hampton, 72, who has been a Cubs fan since he was 20 and moved to Chicago from Alabama. “My son grew up here on the South Side, so that was his team from the start as I would take him to Sox games more because it was closer to our house. He loved the fireworks and all the wacky stuff then owner Bill Veck would do as promotions. One day he just told me he was done with the Cubs and that was it. We’ve been going at it ever since. He hasn’t called me or returned my calls in a week,” he said with a laugh. “He can run but he can’t hide. He’s probably going to call on me after the Cubs win it all, anyway out of fear I might have a heart attack.” Social media is lighting up with the battle between the two passionate fan bases. Cubs fans say Sox fans should be pulling for them to unite Chicago. Sox fans say “you gotta be crazy,” as many have vowed to never support the Cubs. But there are some Sox fans who say they wouldn’t mind if the Cubs won. “If they win I’ll be happy for them because right now they are the most miserable sports fans around,” said Jen Little from Bronzeville. “It’s like they try to act like it doesn’t hurt them, but I know it does. It’s embarrassing to say your team has not won
in over 100 years. It’s a disgrace, so I wouldn’t mind if they won just so they could have some peace in their lives.” Some Sox fans the Crusader spoke with said they will not be pulling for the Cubs, but they won’t be pulling against them either. In this town that should count for progress. But there are Cubs fans who say if the shoe were on the other foot they would not be supporting the White Sox. “Man in 2005 I was doing anything I could to stop them from winning,” said Darius Hayes from Hyde Park. “I was praying, using voodoo, hoping for a power failure anything so they couldn’t win. I hate the Sox and to see them suffering right now while we are on the cusp of making history is a beautiful thing. Living on the South Side all my life and being a Cubs fan ain’t been easy. So if the Cubs fail this year, I’m not going to be happy because we have the best team in baseball.” If you want to know how hardcore many fans are, all you have to do is visit some of the local establishments on the South Side. At McNally’s bar in Mount Greenwood, their sign says it all. “Fun starts now. Go Indians.” With things already on edge in the city between the two sides, the national media ratcheted up the pressure when they insulted Sox fans after the Cubs won the National League pennant last weekend. Two major media
Jones Family outlets headlined their articles saying Chicago would see its first World Series in 71 years, all but erasing the White Sox championship season and igniting a torrent of insults thrown in their direction by Sox fans. “I get that we will always be considered the second team in this city, it’s why I like the Sox, they’re the underdogs. But the media needs to get their facts right,” said Lisa Johnson, a nurse from the south suburbs. “When they did that, every Sox fan I know that would have supported the Cubs during this run stopped in their tracks and said I hope they get killed in the World Series.” But there is some civility taking
place in many households. Husbands and wives who have opposite rooting interests have vowed not to get divorced or physically assault each other. But some admit there is tension in the house. “She don’t want my team to win even though I said I wouldn’t taunt her and would become a better husband as I would be happy,” said “Dax” Jackson from Auburn/Gresham. “That’s because I know he is lying,” said his wife of five years, Tracie. “He’ll be running around the house naked singing that stupid song ‘Go Cubs Go’ if they win. He ain’t fooling nobody.”

Breast Cancer Awareness goes to the game Thornton Township hosts “Get your Pink On” event at football game While breast cancer rates have been stable overall in recent years, they have increased slightly in African American women. In order to get the message out about early detection, Thornton Township sponsored a “Get Your Pink On” Breast Cancer awareness event attended by more than 500 people, mostly dressed in some type of pink. Using the backdrop of the final regular season football game featuring Thornwood vs. Thornridge High Schools, the township organized interactive photo shoots, giveaways and motivational signs about breast cancer awareness. “We understand how important of an issue this is not only in October but all year around,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About one in 8 or (12%) of women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. This year alone, about 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and about 40,450 women will die from breast cancer, per the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an X-ray or felt as a lump. After increasing for more than 20 years, breast cancer incidence rates in women began decreasing in 2000. But in recent years while incidence rates have been stable in white women, they have increased slight-

ly in African American women. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death in women with only lung cancer kills more women each year. Thornridge and Thornwood students from District #205 volunteered with Thornton Township officials to educate people about breast cancer and post photos on social media with inspirational words. “It’s very important to spread breast cancer awareness because it is a disease taking loved ones away and causing people to suffer,” said Zaire Jordan, 15, a junior at ThornTHORNTON TOWNSHIP FANS hold signs supporting the wood. “I’m glad so many fundraisers and events are being created beBreast Cancer Awareness game.

She has been cancer free for nearly 10 years. Buckley recently joined dozens of breast cancer survivors, fighters and family members from across Illinois to help #Pink Out the United Center as part of Advocate Health Care and the Chicago Bulls’ efforts to promote Breast Cancer Awareness month. 18
Granddaughter, MaKalah Osbey, a student at Diekman Elementary School accompanied her to the Bulls game and was part of the “High Five Group,” which went into the tunnel to greet the players. A patient at Advocate Trinity Hospital, Buckley was first diagnosed in 1998 with cancer in her right breast shortly after refusing to get a mammogram. In 2008, the cancer returned in her left breast. Despite two rounds of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the lump from her right breast, Buckley does not consider herself a survivor. “That means there’s a risk of it coming back. As an overcomer, I’m through with it. I’m not looking for it no more.” Follow Advocate Health Care on Facebook or @AdvocateHealth on Instagram and Twitter for more photos from the event. cause I think it helps when people know that we care about them and that they are not standing alone.” Zuccarelli believes the key to sustaining good health is preventative programs because early detection saves lives. In an effort to keep the community healthy overall, Thornton Township offers blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings as well as light to moderate aerobic workouts by a certified instructor every weekday. “We want people to get these regular screenings and make sure they are healthy overall. We don’t want you to just wait for something to happen before you check your health,” he added. Enough of the hocus-pocus Mr. Mayor Dear Editor: I really hope the Crusader readers are seeing through the mayor’s shell game when it comes to police reform and police accountability. We were supposed to be fooled by the fact he said he was abolishing the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA) and replacing it with a new watchdog agency. This one is called the Civilian Office of Police Accountability or COPA. There were cries from across the city a couple of years ago
to dismantle IPRA after an off-duty cop shot and killed 22-year-old Rekia Boyd. The agency, charged with disciplining cops opted not to discipline the officer although there was overwhelming evidence he acted irresponsibly by shooting in a crowd of unarmed people. The calls to get rid of IPRA grew louder and more intense after the cop who murdered Laquan McDonald by shooting him 16 times only got a slap on the wrist from IPRA. Mayor Rahm Emanuel pretended he was listening to the people by creating COPA. The reality though is COPA is IPRA under a new name. If you look at the responsibilities of the two agencies side-byside, you will see they are nearly identical. COPA is just another Rahm Emanuel scam with a twist. COPA allegedly has “expanded jurisdiction” to investigate complaints of police misconduct. Problem with that part is that there is no budget to hire and retain investigators.
The COPA ordinance unlike IPRA calls for a civilian oversight board. My answer to that is whoopee. This board is supposed to be made up of citizens from across the city. I can’t help but think it will be overloaded with white folks. Even if I am wrong about that this civilian board can only hold hearings. I am not sure what good that is going to do. It is no accident the board has no teeth. All of the so-called activists who were pushing for changes in police accountability in the city overlooked the element that could have brought about the biggest changes – the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) contract. It is the pact that the rankand-file cops live by. Any effective efforts at police reform should have started and stopped with addressing the FOP contract. Changing ordinances, as was the case with IPRA, still left too many loopholes for cops to misbehave, and that misbehavior was covered in the contract.
It is time that Black people learned that in the long run doing things like shutting down Michigan Avenue boutiques and stopping traffic on Lake Shore Drive makes great television, but without some intellectual power at work at the same time, this mayor will continue to give nothing but vapors, hocus pocus to whatever demands the socalled activists are making. Is what the mayor doing wrong? It certainly isn’t helpful. He does it because he can get away with it. It is time for him to stop, but he will not do so unless our community combines the street work with some brainpower in our think tanks. Bill Green

turning around. But there’s more mystery to be unveiled, and the line between fantasy and reality gets thinner and thinner. Parson says the play presents one theory that “love is important in your life, and one should recognize it and embrace it, because it can change the world. “However, different people may get different messages from seeing the show, which is cool,” he added. The play runs until December 18 at the Windy City Playhouse, located at 3014 W. Irving Park Ave. The recently opened theatre has a unique configuration. “It is a really fun and comfortable atmosphere from the second you walk in. There’s a nice bar with themed cocktails and a fire place,” Parson added. “There are comfy swivel seats that allow for very unique staging, since audience members can literally turn the seat. It gives me, as a director a lot freedom to really use the space.” Parson has been acting since the 3rd grade and the bug continued to bite throughout high school in Buffalo, New York. He has the distinction of being the first American Black to direct at the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario. Parson is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s

Tickets are still available for this game, which will be nationally televised on ESPN. Prior to that, he was on the defensive staff of former NIU head coach Jerry Kill at Minnesota from 2011-2014. He began his coaching career with Kill and the Huskies in 2010 as a graduate assistant coach. As a member of head coach Tom Matukewicz’ staff at SEMO in 2015, Rice helped the Redhawks rank fourth in the Ohio Valley in scoring defense and in interceptions. As the defensive quality control assistant at Minnesota, Rice handled opponent scouting, self-scouting and day-to-day operations of the defensive staff as the Gophers played in three bowl games during his time there. www.chicagocrusader.com
Youthful voices chanted, “Soccer, soccer, soccer,” in the Moraine Valley Community College Cyclone Center on Oct. 6, signaling the end of a scrimmage game played by the women’s soccer team and 19 Special Olympics athletes from eight elementary and junior high schools from Oak Park School District 97. With assistance from their chaperones and teachers, the young athletes scurried around the gym for an hour. Cyclones and Special Olympians donned yellow, red or blue practice jerseys to distinguish teams, but everyone ran around wearing big smiles. Hosting this scrimmage was an opportunity for Moraine Valley athletes to give back to the community and offer a different experience for students with disabilities. “Being former athletes, coaches and teachers, we feel that it is our job to give back when we can. Athletes are automatic role models to many kids,” said Cyclones assistant Coach James Kline, who organized the event. “We can offer an experience that these students might not have had, and it’s really an experience for both sides. As a special education teacher, I always try to find ways to accommodate or incorporate the students with disabilities any
