Teachers Union and protestors say no more charters

By J. Coyden Palmer Claiming the proliferation of charter schools is hurting the overall quality of education in Chicago, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) held a press conference Wednesday calling for a moratorium and claimed conflict of interest from school board president, Frank Clark, who sits on the board of the Noble Network of Charter Schools. Citizen protesters also called on the mayor and City Council to reinvest tax dollars in neighborhoods after a report surfaced this week saying some schools have a freshman class of only a dozen students. Jesse Sharkey, CTU vice-president, stated that this week two more charter schools were put on probation and are vulnerable to the same bad results as neighborhood schools. Speaking in front of City Hall Wednesday morning, Sharkey said charter schools have many direct ties to city leaders who benefit from their operations. “Until we disconnect the line between charter schools and people on the school board and those who work in this building behind me, we are going to continue to have conflicts of interest and the potential for corruption,” Sharkey said. “But, most importantly, we will have thousands of CPS students who are getting shortchanged in their education as their resources are being stolen right from under them.” Official district enrollment numbers shows there are 38 high schools with fewer than 400 students in them. Nearly all of them serve predominantly African-American students on the city’s South and West sides. Those schools include: Robeson, Hirsch, Tilden, Harper, Manley, and Fenger. Fenger’s former principal, Elizabeth Dozier, resigned earlier this year without warning. She had been touted by Emanuel and others as one of the best principals in the city during the TV series on CNN last year titled, “Chicago.” Sources tell the Crusader Dozier left “frustrated” after being told her budget would be slashed because of a drop in enrollment. In 2004, Chicago had 88 high schools with just under 100,000 students. Present(Continued on page 3)

Obama returns home to support officers as policing gets riskier in neighborhoods By Erick Johnson Policing in the Black community. It’s a subject that has divided Chicago with leaders taking sides while police figure out how to crack down on shootings that continue to rip the city’s neighborhoods. It’s a tightrope police must walk every day as they police Chicago’s dangerous streets. To catch suspects, police officers risk their lives while combing dangerous neighborhoods, where they have been often accused of racial profiling. As video cameras around the country

continue to capture police killing and abusing civilians, protecting the Black community has become a risky challenge for officers who struggle to strike a balance between policing residents while maintaining healthy relations. In the past several weeks, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the scrutiny of police actions may be preventing some Chicago officers from doing their job, but White House officials have denied this claim. As homicides soar to new levels in Chicago, one fact remains clear: policing in the Black and Hispanic community has be-

come a dangerous and difficult task where many officers have died trying to keep neighborhoods safe. The policing issue is so thorny that even President Barack Obama was careful in overly praising many police officials as he wrapped up the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) at McCormick Place on Tuesday. The event was the largest gathering of law enforcement leaders in the world with more than 14,000 public safety professionals. The event was held as hundreds of police (Continued on page 2)

A breast cancer survivor’s story The following is a personal account of a breast cancer survivor’s experience shared with The Chicago Crusader Chicago Crusader staff report In November 2010, Cassandra Neal was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She clearly remembered at the time wondering “How could this happen to me?” Neal said she cried and prayed. She recalled thinking that God saw the tears she cried, but wondered why He allowed her to go through what she went through. Neal considered herself healthy. “I made a conscious effort to eat right and exercise. But how on earth could this be my diagnosis? After the diagnosis I had more tests to

follow – MRI’s and biopsies. After a second round of tests, I received more devastating news: I had to have chemotherapy treatments. I felt numb for a while, but I reme mbered my favorite scripture. It’s Philippians 4:13. It reads. “‘I Harry C. Alford Cassandra Neal can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’.” There have been studies done to support the positive outcomes achieved when women have friends and family to walk with them through the whole process–– from diagnosis and treatment to recovery.

Neal agreed with this as she describes the care she received from her mother. “During my treatments, my mother spent time with me and prayed for me daily. She rubbed me with healing oils, cooked meals and cleaned and supported me throughout my entire journey. While she took care of me, she also cared for her sister, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and my father, who had leukemia.” After Neal consulted with her doctors, they determined that she had to undergo six rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. Although they found the cancer in her right breast, she decided to have both breasts removed because her oncologist said, “There is a 50/50 chance it could (Continued on page 7)

ICYMI: ‘Stop the Cops to Fund Black Futures’ Over 60 Black and allied organizers arrested for shutdown of IACP Conference On Saturday, October 24th, members of the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100), We Charge Genocide, Assata’s Daughters, Not One More, and Organized Communities Against Deportations, shut down the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Annual Conference for over four hours. BYP100 and fellow organizers were bound together by lock boxes while they shut down three intersections surrounding the IACP’s conference location at McCormick Place; in addition to blocking an inside McCormick Place walkway and one organizer took down the American flag and replaced it with a flag titled, “ Unapologetically Black.” After four hours of protests, over 66 (47 women & 19 men) organizers were arrested. BYP100, allied-organizations, and community supporters conducted Saturday’s direct actions at the IACP conference to demonstrate an urgency to divest from police departments and organizations and reallocate funds to programs and policies that keep Black communities safe. “Together, we’re organized to demand that our lives, our communities and

The police chiefs who belong to the IACP, and their local departments have a debt to pay for the lives and the resources they’ve stolen and we’re here to collect,” says BYP100 National Director, Charlene Carruthers. The list of demands BYP100 has called for include: a divestment of local, state, and federal funding from police departments; a reallocation of funding towards social services, job creation, and quality education; and reparations for

chattel slavery. The direct action included not only Black organizers; but a multiracial and queer coalition of supporters for the Movement for Black Lives, “Our multiracial collective of individuals from several organizations demonstrated what it means to struggle in solidarity and center Black women & LGBTQ leadership,” says Assata’s Daughters organizer, Page May. In the City of Chicago, 40% of

the city's budget goes towards police departments, which is estimated to be over $4 million a day. Recently Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced he wants to hire 300 more police officers and spend $200 million more on the police department. "Mayor Emanuel and many others highlight the violence in the Black Chicago community. The Mayor sucks resources necessary for us to thrive out of our community and replaces them with more cops who will do nothing but inflict harm and terrorize

us. We need to fund Black futures, not more cops." says BYP100 organizer Maxx Boykin. BYP100 and fellow organizers received local and national support for their demonstration. The hashtag for the day, #StopTheCops, was used in over 25,000 tweets and the tag trended nationally in cities across the U.S. for hours. See the BYP100 Twitter Page for a recap of the action and updates including photos and video.

Obama returns home to support officers as policing gets riskier (Continued from page 1) officers in New York City attended a wake for one of their own, Officer Randolph Holder, 33. Holder became the fourth officer

grown weary in the past years while protecting many neighborhoods whom they feel do not appreciate their efforts. “Too often, law enforcement gets scapegoated for the broader

President Barack Obama in New York to die in 10 months after he was gunned down by a suspect on a bicycle on October 20. In front of thousands of people at McCormick Place, Obama encouraged hundreds of law enforcement officials who have 2

failures of our society and criminal justice system. I know that you do your jobs with distinction no matter the challenges you face,” Obama said. “That’s part of wearing the badge. But, we can’t expect you to contain and control problems that the rest of us aren’t

willing to face or do anything about; problems ranging from substandard education to a shortage of jobs and opportunity; from an absence of drug treatment programs to laws that result in it being easier in too many neighborhoods for a young person to purchase a gun than a book.” Obama joined Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and Emanuel in renewing calls for Congress to pass laws to increase and tighten background checks of gun buyers. More than 2,500 shootings in Chicago have occurred this year. From the gunfire, over 400 people have died. Obama praised the city’s police force as it continues to battle one of the highest homicide rates in the country, while its leader— McCarthy—faces heavy criticism from the city’s Black leaders. Obama also reminded the nation’s officers that “as they serve, America places high expectations on you.” On Tuesday, a video emerged from Columbia, S.C. where an officer flipped over a desk a teenage Black girl was sitting in and dragged her across the floor in the classroom full of students. While the officer has been suspended without pay, many Amer-

icans believed the officer could have handled the teenager less violently when she refused to leave the classroom. Obama said police officers should be open to criticism when it comes to policing. “That doesn’t mean we should not have a serious and robust debate over fairness in law enforcement and our broader criminal justice system when it comes to communities of color,” Obama said. “I’ve talked to enough chiefs and beat cops around the country to know you care about these issues and want to do the right thing.” During the IACP event, the Department of Justice released the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing Implementation Guide, a new guidebook to assist local leaders in implementing the Task Force’s recommendations by providing specific guidance on how to reduce crime while building community trust and improving policing. The creation of the guidebook came at the request of over 100 local leaders, including law enforcement leaders that convened in Washington on July 23 for the White House Forum on Community Policing.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

During the three-day event, law enforcement executives from around the world discussed relations between police and the communities they serve. On Sunday, over 60 people were arrested while protesting outside the conference at McCormick Place. The protesters accused the mayor of cutting social services in the Black community while increasing funding to the police department and were arrested for blocking traffic after they chained themselves and sat in the street. Security was tighter on Tuesday, as police blocked off Prairie Avenue and Cermak Road to help protect the president. Obama spoke in the massive Skyline Ballroom at the McCormick Place West Building, where he was embraced by his hometown audience who often applauded after his remarks. Before he spoke, a forum focusing on the community-police relations was held with NAACP President Cornell Brooks. He served on a guest panel that featured police chiefs from Seattle and Arlington, Texas. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch was scheduled to participate, but she cancelled after becoming ill before her appearance. www.chicagocrusader.com

County approves gun violence coordinator position Cook County Commissioner Richard R. Boykin, (1st District) on Wednesday, October 28, succeeded in passing legislation that authorizes Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart to appoint a Cook County Gun Violence Coordinator. The ordinance, aimed at sharply reducing the gun violence afflicting Chicago and Cook County neighborhoods, was approved by the Board at a meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. In addition to sanctioning Sheriff Dart to appoint the Gun Violence Coordinator, the ordinance, #15-5847, charges the County with assembling a 15-member task force to help facilitate a concentrated and cooperative gun violence reduction effort among government, law enforcement and community stakeholders. Boykin held a press conference praising county leaders for passing his legislation. “There is simply no more pressing issue in Cook County than

that of gun violence,” said Commissioner Boykin. “Today’s vote represents a significant step in breaking down bureaucratic barriers and creating working relationships across silos so that all County stakeholders are working from the same strategic playbook, in a coordinated fashion, to make progress on a single goal: reducing the number of shootings and gun violence in Chicago and Cook County.” In 2015, the number of shootings and gun homicides have risen dramatically in Chicago and Cook County. In fact, shootings are up 25% over this time last year. Over 2,400 people have been struck by bullets in Chicago this year and in Cook County, 527 people were shot to death, according to data provided by the Cook County Medical Examiner. Boykin originally proposed the position in August. Initially known as the gun violence czar, Boykin was concerned that 80

percent of victims of gun-violence were Blacks. In raw numbers, that translates into 455 gunshot deaths, with 363 of being Black. When he first proposed position, Boykin said gun violence in Illinois costs $9.6 billion annually, or $750 per person. Those are the costs of investigative police work, as well as emergency hospital treatment, and in many cases, lifelong care of victims who suffered paralysis or some debilitating injury. The Task Force will hold 3 public hearings chaired by the Gun Violence Coordinator to gather testimony and data about the economic, social, and cultural causes of gun violence in Cook County and the best methodology for reducing gun violence. The hearings shall take place over a period of time not to exceed 12 months and shall culminate in a written set of policy recommendations put forth under

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN CHICAGO City passes mayor’s $7.8 billion budget proposal By a 35-15 vote, the Chicago City Council on Wednesday, October 18, passed Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s $7.8 billion budget, which includes a four-year, controversial $588 million property tax increase and a separate fee for garbage collection. The largest increase in Chicago history will help pay for the city’s police and fire pensions, a crisis that has reached $20 billion. The garbage fee, which will be a first for Chicago, will be added to water bills that are sent to residents every other month.

Academic warning list proposed for charter schools Chicago Public Schools (CPS) on Monday, October 26, proposed an accountability policy that will hold charter schools to the same academic standards as District-run schools. Under the new policy, which will be voted on by the Board of Education at its upcoming Board Meeting, any charter that has a Level 3 SQRP rating, a two-year SQRP point value average of 2.5 or lower, or a Level 2 rating in three consecutive years will be placed on the Academic Warning List. School officials threaten to close underperforming charter schools if they do not improve. So far, 10 charter schools have been placed on an Academic Warning List. They include the Betty Shabazz – Barbara A. Sizemore Academy Elementary School, Bronzeville’s Lighthouse Charter Elementary School, Kwame Nkrumah Academy Elementary School, ChicagoQuest High School, Larry Hawkins High School and Justice Lozano High School.

Dorothy Brown loses endorsement amid federal investigation The Cook County Democratic Party on Friday, October 23, withdrew its endorsement of County Clerk Dorothy Brown after learning the four-term incumbent was under a federal investigation for a building she sold on the city’s West Side. The investigation had been going on since 2014 after Brown and her husband sold a building in North Lawndale to a developer for $100,000. The probe disappointed the Cook County Democratic Party, which voted to endorse Brown in August after she denied being under a federal investigation. The group instead voted to endorse Alderman Michelle Harris (8th Ward).

Enrollment down as CPS releases final tally for school year Enrollment in Chicago Public Schools is down according to the District’s final tally that was released on Tuesday, October 27. According to the District, nearly 370,000 students are enrolled in CPS’s K-12 schools. The amount is lower than the previous year, where nearly 374,000 students were enrolled in the District. Enrollment in CPS Charter Schools this year increased to 61,496 students, nearly 1,800 more than last year, according to the District. The total enrollment for all CPS schools, including public charter schools is just over 392,000 students, down from nearly 397,000 last year.

City may charge Uber drivers extra 2 cents per ride Chicago will charge Uber drivers and ride-sharing companies an additional 2 cents as part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposed 2016 budget. Emanuel said the money raised will be used to reduce some registration costs for traditional cabdrivers. The latest proposal came after hours of closed-door negotiations between Emanuel administration aides and aldermen who have pressured city leaders to pass tougher rules regulating the ride-sharing industry. City leaders said the new fee would raise about $2 million per year, which would be used to help defray the hundreds of dollars traditional cabdrivers have to spend on background checks, vehicle inspections and drug tests. www.chicagocrusader.com

gressively to staff the task force, centralize our gun violence prevention strategy, and mobilize the resources of County government to save lives. I also want to thank Sheriff Dart and State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez for their dutiful collaboration on this legislation”

CTU and protestors say no more charters (Continued from page 1) ly, there are 140 high schools for 100,670 students. Those numbers do not include alternative schools. Critics of the city say the oversaturation of high schools in the city is the reason why so many traditional schools are struggling to get students. “We have seen this now for over a decade, and the public needs to get more involved,” said Jitu Brown of the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization, who led the fight to have Dyett High School reopened. “It’s a waste of taxpayer dollars to have schools meant to hold 1,000 students open when there are only 175 students. But, the question is: ‘Where did the students go?’ The answer is charters because private schools cost too much and some of them have closed. They have duped the public into believing charter means better.” CTU President Karen Lewis is also calling on the Board of Education to rescind decisions made by former CPS CEO Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who was indicted earlier this month on corruption charges. Lewis said because there may be others indicted as Byrd-

Bennett is cooperating with federal prosecutors, nobody knows how deep the corruption was or who was involved. “As new information emerges in the expanse of the federal investigation into corruption on the part of former Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett, it is critically important for us to revisit the scope of her tenure in Chicago,” Lewis said. “The mayor’s hand-picked CEO’s admission of guilt is an also admission of bad management and the culture of failed leadership that have plagued our district over the last five years. I am calling for the Board of Ed to overturn every decision she made during her unethical tenure, including closing 50 neighborhood schools, the layoffs of thousands of educators and the awarding of lucrative contracts to politically- connected companies and allies tied to both her and City Hall. The disgraced CEO is at the tip of the iceberg. The CTU has been calling for an investigation into the Board’s dealings for several years. It is unfortunate that it took someone going to federal prison for them to take our pleas seriously.”

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL DEMOCRACY AND THE OTHER “D” WORD Very few people in America would disagree with the notion that “democracy” can be a good thing. Americans are often very proud of the fact that our country theoretically allows for equal participation in a system that was born out of struggle. The colonists came here to escape oppression, and the Founding Fathers adopted democratic government as a model for how they wanted to craft civilization in this “new world.” According to Wikipedia, Democracy, or democratic government, is “a system of government in which all the people of a state or polity ... are involved in making decisions about its affairs, typically by voting to elect representatives to a parliament or similar assembly,” as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary. Democracy is further defined as (a:) “government by the people; especially: rule of the majority (b:) “ a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.” Essentially, therefore, “the people” are a key factor in the direction that a democratic society will take. It must be said right off that it is obvious that the Founding Fathers did not have African Americans in mind when they were crafting their “warm and fuzzy mom and apple pie” democracy; Blacks were not considered “the people” that they were describing, as evidenced by the fact that the U.S. Constitution had to later be amended in order to address the plight of her darker citizens. It is also obvious that democracy did not have in mind the uneducated and the poor. A truly democratic system must rely on the “intelligence” of the people. Anyone, therefore, who wants to manipulate the system has but to use propaganda through the media and otherwise to “dumb-down” the populace. Dumbeddown is the other “D” word. Just how does this work? Citizens fed a steady diet of mindless entertainment and watered down discussion will eventually become mentally lazy, with the result that they lose the ability to discern what is real and what is not. This is especially true when it comes to the electoral process. Savvy politicians can promise the sky and deliver mud, without much of a whimper from a dumbed-down electorate. If you look around America today, this seems to be obvious. The prohibitive costs of a college education wherein people emerge with possibly a degree but almost surely with staggering student loan debt, speaks to one method of keeping people from thinking critically. In other words, when people are denied opportunities for education, and are then saturated with cultural fluff, they are almost guaranteed to be mystified by the electoral process and become basically non-participatory mentally, if not in actuality. In order for a democracy to work, there must be a critical mass of thinkers of a particular ilk; if the majority are preoccupied with various and sundry amusements, the wealthy, educated few have an opportunity to steer people in any direction that they see fit. Those on the losing end in such a scenario are the unwealthy thinkers who perhaps are awake and have what they consider a better way to craft a society, but are frustrated by the inertia of the unthinking masses, many of whom decide not to vote at all. With this said, it will be important to reach the hearts and minds of the disaffected masses in order for a true democracy to emerge in America; we need a participatory cohort of thinking citizens. If this does not happen, the “D” for Democracy will be replaced by the “D” for dumbed-down, with just about everyone losing out but the manipulators. A luta continua.

I bet by now most of your readers saw the news last week about more than 100 police chiefs from around the country went to Washington to talk about mass incarceration being the biggest problem in the U.S. justice system. They took that dog-and-pony show, led by Chicago’s inept police superintendent, to news conferences and never admitted they are the biggest problems. I guess they think we are too dumb to realize that. The first step of incarceration is being arrested by the police. All over the country police are targeting Black folks - either to shoot us in cold blood or arrest us for some of the same things they look the other way when white folks do them. But nope, they didn’t acknowledge that. Cops are going to court and lying under oath, falsifying arrest reports and doing whatever else they need to make their shabby cases hold up. That is what helps prosecutors lock up so many African-American and Latino men and women. Why didn’t the police chiefs talk about the disproportionate number of minorities in the country’s prisons? Because if they did that they would have to acknowledge they

arrest minorities in disproportionate numbers. They also claimed that overcrowding in jails and prisons could be reduced if people caught with small amounts of illegal drugs were not treated as criminals and locked up. Guess who is treating them like criminals? It is not their friends, families and neighbors. It is the same police that these whiners who were yapping in D.C. are in charge of. Before they go talking about solving a huge problem such as mass incarceration, they need to look at and address what is happening in their own areas. That would be the start we need. Frank Tolliver

COMMENTARY

The Great Bill Crawford – Part 2 Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Indiana was beginning to change. The Hoosier Minority Chamber of Commerce was taking form with the moral support of the Concerned Clergy and Indiana Legislative Black Caucus led by the efforts of State Representative Bill Crawford. We got the two major utility companies in Indianapolis to come into compliance with federal guidelines regarding minority business utilization. There were a lot of new targets for us and Representative Crawford picked the next one. It would be inner city housing construction. I was driving down College Ave. when I saw Bill step out into the street and flagged me over to the curb. He was intense and a local contractor, Mr. Powell, was with him. He said, “Harry, Powell’s 12 year old son looked across the street from their home and asked, “Daddy why aren’t you working on that home?” Powell then said, “Why wasn’t I working on that home across the street from my house which was financed by the Neighborhood Association? It is embarrassing and hurtful.” Here was a neighborhood association hiring white contractors from

Harry C. Alford outside the jurisdiction. There are plenty of Black contractors living in that association’s boundary. That’s a problem. I told them I would have a report at the next Concerned Clergy meeting. Most American cities have neighborhood associations. Their duty is to assist in the economic empowerment of local neighborhoods by affordable housing – particularly on empty lots, abandoned homes and buildings. I started detecting something “rotten” in this process. There are fourteen neighborhood associations in Indianapolis recognized by the City of Indianapolis.

They are governed by volunteers who live in those designated neighborhoods. They would let out the contracts, often no-bid process. Funding would flow from the Mayor’s office via HUD Community Development Block Grants, foundations, philanthropists, etc. The funding is first parked in a Community Development Corporation. Each CDC would oversee the spending process of a particular neighborhood association and, therefore, would have significant influence on the decisions of the neighborhood associations. This was the problem. CDC’s were being chaired by people (usually white) who did not live in the particular neighborhood association. Thus, the utilization of white contractors who did not live within the turf of the association they were working on. The local Black contractors were being boxed out of their own neighborhoods. There was another big problem. These “affordable homes” were being built for unreasonable prices. The contractors were jacking up the cost. Then local realtors would sell them at the high rate and declare a new comparable rate for homes in that block. If there is a sold home that is 3600 square feet with three bedrooms and two full baths, then

all future homes of comparable size will be valued at that rate. The contractors were overcharging; the CDC went along with the scheme and realtors can now sell homes at inflated rates. As the rates would increase, fewer Blacks could afford them. Thus, gentrification would start to set in. Black neighborhoods changing to white ones all with the blessing or ignorance of the neighborhood associations. This game is being played throughout the nation. I gave my report at the Concerned Clergy meeting. After our anger calmed down, we resolved to change the system. All Chairs of CDC’s must live within the neighborhood association they were governing. I wrote each CDC chair and demanded his/her immediate resignation. We had a press conference and proclaimed that contractors working within the neighborhood associations must itemize the cost of his labor, services and supplies. Some of our larger contractors would estimate fair selling prices for the work done and inform us with their opinion. Indiana license plates are coded by the first two numbers on the plates. Thus, we could determine which county a worker lived in. Any cars with outside numbers may get their

tires slashed. Any out of state cars would possibly be towed. This was all over the news as CDC chairs began to resign. One person from the upscale suburb of Noblesville called me asked me to explain. I asked would he want someone from East Indianapolis to be chairing a housing association or CDC in Noblesville. In the end he admitted that we made sense and resigned. Mayor Steve Goldsmith understood our issue and stayed in the background. At last, our neighborhoods were starting to really get empowered and contractors like Powell started getting significantly more work. It was all over the news. We completed the process within two months and the Concerned Clergy and Hoosier Minority Chamber of Commerce was starting to get a reputation. People with complaints would get speaking opportunities at the Concerned Clergy meetings and we would address their concerns. Those days were beautiful and I miss them - especially with Bill Crawford Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. An 11-hour Infomercial for Hillary Clinton By George E. Curry Media Columnist House Republicans’ Benghazi Hearing last week was designed to further lower Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers in her quest to become president. But the Republican strategy backfired as the televised hearing became an 11-hour infomercial for Hillary Clinton. Instead of a weakened opponent, Clinton emerged stronger than ever in the wake of Vice President Joe Biden announcing he will not make a third run for the White House. Time after time, she demonstrated her mastery of foreign policy, proved that she could remain calm under constant badgering and inane questioning by Republicans on the panel. Clinton couldn’t have created a more effective TV campaign commercial. I watched all of the charade except for a 30-minute break I took to watch national news. By the time the hearing wrapped up, the only thing new we had learned was that there are no limits on how low Republicans will sink to score political points - at a cost of nearly $5 million and counting. Instead of seeking answers to questions, more often than not, the GOP panel members would tell us what they thought the former Secretary of State was thinking at the time or shared their far-fetched “theory” about what was transpiring at the time. Curry the ranking member of the panel, said the special committee had one goal - to damage the presidential candidacy of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton “As we all know, Representative Kevin McCarthy, Speaker Boehner’s second in command and the chairman’s close friend, admitted that they established the select committee to drive down Secretary Clinton’s poll numbers. Democrats didn’t say that. The second in command in the House said that, a Republican,” Cummings stated. “Republican Congressman Richard Hanna said the Select Committee was, quote, ‘designed - designed to go after Secretary Clinton.’ And one of the chairman’s own, hand-picked investigators, a self- proclaimed conservative Republican, charged that he was fired in part for not going along with

these plans to, quote, ‘hyper-focus on Hillary Clinton.’ GOP panel members focused on trying to discredit Clinton. Rep. Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, offered: “Here’s what I think’s going on...” Peter Roskam, a Republican from Illinois, said: “...And let me tell you a little bit of a theory that I’ve developed from my reading and research and listening today...” Perhaps they relied so heavily on theory and their personal opinion because there were no new facts to add. In fact, they went over many of the same questions Clinton had answered when she testified before the committee earlier. “Of the 316 total questions, according to our count Republican members of the committee asked 249,” Media Matters, the media watchdog group, found. “About 75 of their questions - 30 percent - involved information that was already specifically discussed during Clinton’s first day of hearings in front of Congress in January 2013. “Those hearings (she appeared twice on the same day before both the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee) only lasted a total of about five hours and 35 minutes, but Clinton and her questioners managed to provide a plethora of information that yesterday’s Select Com-

mittee was apparently unaware existed.” It continued, “For instance, Clinton had already answered questions about who handled requests for increased security at Benghazi prior to the 2012 attacks. She had already answered questions about why, in the days following the attacks, she had - like the intelligence community and eyewitnesses on the ground - discussed the anti-Muslim video that sparked worldwide protests and which the alleged terrorists themselves cited as a motivation. And she had already explained that the compound in Benghazi was a ‘temporary’ facility, and thus not under the normal regulations for more typical consulates and embassies.” When Republicans callously tried to portray Clinton as uncaring after the loss of four Americans, she responded with passion and sensitivity. She said at one point, “I would imagine I’ve thought more about what happened than all of you put together. I’ve lost more sleep than all of you put together.” The hearing was roundly denounced by the media as fruitless. The New York Times observed, “The pointless grilling of Mrs. Clinton, who fielded a barrage of questions that have long been answered and settled, served only to embarrass the Republican lawmakers who have spent millions of dollars on a political crusade.”

A Washington Post editorial said, “The House Select Committee on Benghazi further discredited itself on Thursday as its Republican members attempted to fuel largely insubstantial suspicions about Hillary Clinton’s role in the 2012 Benghazi attacks. Grilling Ms. Clinton all day, they elicited little new information and offered little hope that their inquiry would find anything significant that seven previous investigations didn’t.” Cummings said, “When we first joined the Select Committee, I asked my staff to put together a complete report and database setting forth the questions that have been asked about the attacks and all of the answers that were provided in the eight previous investigations...The problem is that rather than accepting these facts, Republicans continue to spin new conspiracy theories that are just as outlandish and inaccurate.” George E. COMMENTARY

SELF-DETERMINATION AND DIGNITY Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill

In order for the African Community in America to continue our fight for self-determination and dignity, it is important that we remind ourselves of the nature of the American dynamic. Essentially, and at the foundation of the American-European dynamic, is the fact that it is made up of many nations who migrated to this country and continued to fight for and develop their national interests, inside this country. At the same time they maintained their economic, political, cultural, linguistic, and social relationships with their country of origin. We can witness this phenomenon on a daily basis by just taking a quick glance at the national/ethnic group practices and beliefs of the Jews, Poles, Irish, Italians, Germans, Swedes, Greeks, French, Slovakians, Czechs, etc., and how they have consolidated their political and economic power in America. They have all done this through their nationalistic unity on the fundamental life giving and life sustaining issues that affect their interests. In other words, they have maintained a strong sense of where they came from, who they are, and where they are going. This formula has

been at the heart of their historical efforts to acquire power in America. We can observe this same trend among the Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Jordanians, and Palestinians who are the new national/ethnic groups of America. In fact, the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and other Spanishspeaking national/ethnic groups are following this same pattern. They are fighting for nationalism in America, without calling it that. When African people in America talk about nationalism, we are often charged with being racists or antiwhite. However, the historical record demonstrates clearly that nationalism has been the primary method by which every national/ethnic group has achieved and maintains power. Harold Cruse describes this dilemma of the African Community in America, in his most profound analysis of our movement, in his book The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual. Cruse framed the American dynamic in this manner when he said, “On the face of it, this dilemma rests on the fact that America, which idealizes the rights of the individual above everything else, in reality, a nation dominated

by the social powers of groups, classes, in-groups and cliques both ethnic and religious.” He goes further to explain, “The individual in America has few rights that are not backed up by the political, economic and social power of one group or another.” Therefore, Cruse states, “…the individual [Black person] has, proportionately, very few rights indeed because his ethnic group (whether or not he actually identifies with it) has very little political, economic or social power (beyond moral grounds) to wield.” In our efforts to acquire Black Power, we should remind ourselves that the Black Nationalist Tradition has always been opposed to integration, assimilation, and accommodation as a solution to the problems of people of African ancestry in America. In this regard, the Black Nationalist Tradition has rejected the strategies and tactics of appealing to the morality of white people and their white supremacy system. Black Nationalists have been historically clear that people in power do not teach powerless people how to get power. And they certainly do not give power away, even though,

when challenged, they may make some concessions. It is so clear that every national/ethnic group understands their political, economic, and cultural interest. It is so natural for them to function in a nationalistic manner in their struggle to acquire and maintain power. The African Community in America has not fully conceptualized and reached a consensus on our nationalistic agenda. Many of us function as if we are scared of really acting out what we really know, for fear of being called racist. We need to stop denying our own reality. Being called racist because we believe in, and will fight for, the interests of our race with undying loyalty should become the most honorable badge of courage in our community. We should get off of this defensive “trip” when we fight for the interests of our race and some other national/ethnic group calls us racist. We should know by now, this is a tactic to sway us away from the path of acquiring power. Let’s continue our movement “to assert our own identity, define our own purpose, to make and enforce decisions and to move into our own national interest.” It is called nationalism!

QUESTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Bye, bye Biden. The Vice-President who might have given the Honorable Hillary Clinton a run for her money has concluded that the timing is not right for him. Clinton needs someone to rattle her cage, to push her to be more focused in the general election. Now, Senator Bernie Sanders will push her to the left. Biden may have pushed her back to center, enhancing her electability. No matter. The late Congressman William Clay (D-MO) often said that Black folks should have “no permanent friends, no permanent enemies, only permanent issues.” How hard will African Americans push candidates for President in 2016, whether they are African American or white, Democratic or Republican, legacy candidates (Bush, Clinton), or outsiders? We should directly challenge these candidates on race matters, and push it as aggressively as we can. Hats off to the #BlackLivesMatter movement for doing exactly that – pushing until our issues garnered recognition among Democrats. Republicans were not asked, nor did they volunteer, their perspective on race matters. 6

If I were questioning these candidates on race matters, here’s what I’d ask about their views: 1. What do you think about race relations in our nation? If you think they are broken, how would you fix them? If you think everything is fine, how do you account for the differentials we can measure in terms of income, employment and educational attainment? 2. Do you think that race matters? How? Do you think that the Presidential bully pulpit is an appropriate platform from which to raise this issues? Assuming that you are inaugurated in January 2016, what would be your first speech on race, and whom would you offer it to? 3. Do you believe in targeted programs? In other words since African Americans were disproportionately hit by the Great Recession, should this community get disproportionate assistance in recovery funding. How would you manage this? 4. How do you define affirmative action? Do you agree with its premise and support its implementation? 5. The African American unemployment rate has been twice that of whites for five decades. Do you feel any obligation to close the gap?

SATURDAY, October 31, 2015

Dr. Julianne Malveaux How would you approach that? Too many have accepted this employment gap as historic. Should the African American community accept this as a permanent gap? 6. How would you deal with some of the educational challenges in the African American community, from differences in high school graduation rates, to differences in college attendance? Would you increase the Pell Grant, and where would the money come from? How

strongly will you support HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), and can these institutions expect more support from your administration? 7. The criminal justice system seems biased against African Americans, and the recent spate of the killings of Black men at the hands of white officers magnify this. What are your plans to reform a system that is so clearly biased that half of prison populations are African American (yet only 13 percent of the population)? 8. African Americans disproportionately depend on Social Security, mainly because as few as a third have company provided pensions. Calls for Social Security reform have included proposals to cut benefits, raise the retirement age, or both. What is your position on Social Security changes? How do you think African Americans are affected by these changes? What will you do to mitigate the disproportionate impact of social security changes on African Americans? 9. Who are the African Americans on your campaign team? What are their roles? Will you contract with African American entrepreneurs to do your printing, or media buys and to provide other services? Do you have a goal for what percentage

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

of your campaign budget will be awarded to African American businesses? 10. Do you support the Affordable Care Act, which increases health insurance availability for African American, as well as all Americans? If you do not support the Affordable Care Act, how will you improve health access? Historically, African Americans heavily support Democrats, and from what I see in the Republican field, we should continue to do so. However, Democratic candidates should not take the African American community for granted and those Democrats in the race should be willing to answer these questions. Hillary Clinton enjoys significant support among African Americans. Our support should not excuse her from asking questions about her support of African Americans. If we don’t ask her these questions, we have no right to ask them of others. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist, her latest book “Are We Better Off? reoccur in your left breast.” She did not want to travel or take her family and friends on this journey again, so Neal decided to have both of them removed. In December 2010, during the Christmas holiday, Neal started her first treatment. It was easy. “I thought if all my treatments are like this, I will be just fine.” After her second treatment, she lost all of her hair. During a “girl’s day,” her mother and friends bought wigs for her prior to chemotherapy treatments. She said, “I think my mom and hair stylist were more emotional than me. Losing my hair was not a big issue because I knew I could put on a wig and wear it just like my normal hair. I also realized it was just hair that would grow back and look better than before.” By her third treatment, everything started to change. “I lost my eyebrows and my eyelashes. My taste buds faded to the point where I did not want to eat. I was often fatigued and nauseous. After my fourth and fifth treatment I was ready to give up. I cried and said to the Lord that my suffering was too much.” With deep conviction, Neal expresses her sincerest belief in divine intervention in her health. “But my faith in God and the support of my loving family, church pastor and friends helped me beat this terrible disease. I made it to my sixth treatment by God’s grace and mercy. Chemotherapy was over and I was ready to start living a normal life again.” She went on to say, “I was also thankful to God for leading me to help detect this disease. It happened one night when the Holy Spirit told me to check my right breast. It felt like little rocks were there. I said to myself, this feels strange. I called the doctor. During my appointment, my doctor

advised me to get a mammogram. I was 40 years old and it was about time to have my breasts examined. I scheduled an appointment to have my first mammogram. I figured everything would be fine. I thought my body was just going through a hormonal change. No one in my family had breast cancer. I went in for a routine mammogram, which took two hours. They examined both of my breasts. The left was fine, but they wanted to do additional testing on my right breast. The tests revealed two lumps and calcification, but we were able to stop the cancer before it reached Stage 3.” After chemotherapy treatments, Neal’s worries were not over. It was time for her double mastectomy. “The procedure took a lot out of me because I knew that I would not be the same again with what I had been blessed with. The surgery went fine and my breasts were replaced with implants. While at home recovering from the double mastectomy, I received a call from my surgeon who told me that I would have to have radiation treatments. I was convinced that I was totally finished after my double mastectomy. I cried many tears before I picked myself up and prepared to fight and overcome another hurdle. As it turned out, I had a total of thirty rounds of radiation

treatments,” said Neal. Today, Neal says, “I am a breast cancer survivor and proud champion. I now have a new zest for life. My experience has forever changed me. When God brings you to a situation, He will bring you through it. You must have faith and believe that ‘God will never leave you nor forsake you’.” She is now a part of Atlanta Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Suvivor Choir. The Choir supports and encourages other survivors with music. Neal also participates in the Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk and Making Strides 5K Breast Cancer Walk. She said, “I have overcome my diagnosis and strive to help others to do the same.” As Neal reflected on her faith through this adversity she said, “I thank God again for my faith, family, my Pastor Dr. Craig L. Oliver and Elizabeth Baptist Church (Atlanta, Georgia) and friends for traveling with me during my journey. If it had not been for the Lord, family and friends on my side where would I be?” Cassandra Neal is originally from Chicago and continues to have strong ties through family and friends. COMMUNITY CALENDAR DESIGNING THE SOCIAL GOOD-FROM BLUEPRINT TO BUILDING: Architecture is the most public art form. Because of their scale, purpose, and value – both aesthetic and practical – architectural projects have the potential to affect a whole community’s quality of life. While architectural and design projects are often seen as a private engagement between architect and client, architects always consider the impact their work has on the public and, increasingly, seek community participation in the design process. Designing the Social Good examines the way that architecture, in its process and products, can give voice to the broader community. What is design’s social impact? “We’ll look at the ways in which architectural projects have affected communities around them. We hope you’ll join us for an exciting series of discussions about architecture, design, and the social good,” organizers said. All events are free and open to the public, RSVP on the event pages. An upcoming discussion is Designing with the Public, which will take place on Friday, October 30, 7:30 p.m.at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington Street. SEED (Social Economic Environmental Design Network) is a network of architects, designers, and other diverse experts in public interest design driven by the belief that design can support a community from the ground up. Design professionals work alongside locals who know their community and its needs to achieve the best of physical design and community impact. What kinds of processes and outcomes must be considered to achieve truly good design, one that meets the needs of contemporary society? In this talk, Bryan Bell, a SEED Cofounder, will present best practice and exemplary projects based on 15 years of research. The speaker is Bryan Bell, Executive Director, Design Corps. This program is presented as part of DCASE’s Up All Night with Architecture. TEEN LEARNING LAB AT THE SHEDD: High school students can continue to learn outside their classrooms and explore a space designed for teens, by teens at Shedd’s Teen Learning Lab. Remedies needed to reduce $175 billion student loans By Charlene Crowell As the cost of higher education has risen, students and their families have increasingly turned to student loans to cover costs. Today, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), 41 million consumers collectively owe more than $1.2 trillion in debt. What is less commonly known, however, is that millions of student loan borrowers are delinquent or in default on $175 billion in student loan balances. To frame it another way – more than 1-in-4 student loan borrowers are either delinquent or in default. With that kind of red ink, the CFPB began a public inquiry that has now led to over 30,000 comments sharing the difficult struggles of student loan repayments, as well as remedies to cure this growing trend. Many of these struggles can be traced back to student loan servicers – the companies hired by the Department of Education to collect loan payments and, in theory, assist borrowers if they get into trouble. Consumers reported a litany of servicing woes to the CFPB, reminiscent of those that affected

mortgages and foreclosures just a few years ago. Lost paperwork, misapplied payments and difficulty correcting errors are just a few of the unfortunate circumstances student borrowers and co-signers face. But one of the biggest problems facing student loan borrowers is servicers’ failure to help them avoid default and distress by enrolling into any of several repayment plans that might help them out of a financial pinch. Federal loans offer options to alter loan repayments. Deferring payments due to unemployment or income-based repayments that adjust to each borrower’s capacity to repay have helped many borrowers to financially cope. Depending upon the type of federal loan and employment secured, some loans may be forgiven after years of prompt payment and public service. Even with these options, 70 percent of federal direct loan borrowers in default actually met income requirements for lower monthly payments attached to income-driven repayment plans, according to a report released by the General Accounting Office earlier this year. Additional evidence suggests

Harry C.Crowell Alford Charlene that borrowers enrolled in income-driven repayment plans can avoid default more easily compared to borrowers who do not enroll. For CFPB, this disturbing data point prompts questions as to how well or even if borrowers knew all their available options. Comments filed with CFPB suggest that some servicers provided either conflicting or inaccurate

information that denied the best loan remedy. In some cases, the remedy offered increased loan costs. In other instances, late payment processing often created higher interest charges and late fees. “There are no consistent, market-wide federal standards for student loan servicing and servicers generally have discretion to determine policies related to many aspects of servicing operations,” states CFPB’s report. “A growing body of evidence suggests that rising levels of student loan indebtedness may also have had spillover effects on other segments of the economy—potentially limiting borrowers’ access to credit, diminishing savings, reducing homeownership, threatening retirement security, and inhibiting borrowers from pursuing careers as healthcare providers and educators in underserved communities, or as entrepreneurs,” the report continued. To effectively alleviate student debt burdens, the CFPB along with the U.S. Treasury and Department of Education have together endorsed a set of principles to guide student loan servicing reforms. These principles would

apply to both private and federal loans. In part these principles call for: • Publishing information about the practices of lenders and servicers, along with information on the performance of private and federal student loans • Holding loan servicers accountable for violations of contractual agreements, federal regulations and consumer laws at both the state and federal levels; and Directing servicers to provide accurate information to borrowers and provide effective student loan servicing. “Good student loan servicing is the key to successful loan repayment,” said Leslie Parrish, Deputy Director of Research at the Center for Responsible Lending. “No borrower should default because the servicer failed to give them the attention they deserved. The CFPB and Department of Education must work together to comprehensively reform student loan servicing.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. The next chapter of the Emmett Till story Acclaimed author gives exclusive interview to the Crusader By Erick Johnson Imagine if Emmett Till was murdered today the same way he died in 1955. It’s a scenario that one of America’s most prolific authors would use to challenge one to view a tragic event that led to an important period in Black history. Hudson-Weems is also a distinguished professor of English at the University of Missouri, where she teaches courses on African women writers. On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, Hudson-Weems gave an exclusive interview to the Chicago Crusader, just a month after Chicago and

ie Till-Mobley while working on her doctorate dissertation. “Mamie said Emmett allegedly whistled at a white woman. I told her so what. Whether Emmett whistled or not, what they did was a crime,” Hudson-Weems recalled. Less than two weeks after the murder, the two white men, J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant were both acquitted in a trial that lasted just over an hour. They later confessed to murder in an interview with “Look” magazine after being paid $4,000. Outrage erupted in the Black communities in Chicago and America. Emmett’s mother drew criticism for having an open casket funeral where her son’s grotesque corpse would be photographed and seen by an estimated 50,000 people at the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Bronzeville. He was buried at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip. While critics said Till-Mobley dishonored her son in displaying his body, Hudson-Weems, who knew Till-Mobley, said she made the right decision-one that showed the world what was done to Emmett. “It was shocking and ugly, but no one wanted to deal with the true ugliness of racism in America,” said Hudson-Weems. “Back

Dr. Clenora HarryHudson-Weems C. Alford then and even now, people have a hard time publicly acknowledging what happened to Emmett, especially whites. Historians would talk about the good, the bad and the ugly.” There were many young Blacks who were murdered or disappeared during the days of Jim Crow. But Hudson-Weems believes that the Civil Rights Movement would not have happened had Till-Mobley not allowed the death of her son to be shown or

told in gruesome details. It’s the premise of her first book, Emmett Till: The Sacrificial Lamb of the Civil Rights Movement. According to several reports, when Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the bus, she said she did it after thinking about Emmett’s murder, which occurred nearly three months prior to her arrest. In 1988, Hudson-Weems, then a scholar in African Woman studies, decided to do her dissertation on Emmett’s life and murder. The paper, Emmett Till: The Impetus for the Modern Civil Rights Movement would be basis for Emmett Till: The Sacrificial Lamb of the Civil Rights Movement. That book, according to scholars placed Hudson-Weems as the first historian who established Emmett’s death as a catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement. Over the years Hudson-Weems remains passionate about her responsibility in telling Emmett’s story. She has wrapped up a fourth book on Emmett’s story and will soon release it once it is cleared for publication. Hudson-Weems said the Emmett story is one that Blacks should never forget. It’s also a story that should not be repeated. “Emmett played an important role in all of our lives,” she said.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Create Your Karma. Whether you know it or not you are doing just that each day of your life. Although we use karma interchangeably with reaping and sowing, make no mistake—it’s all about following the golden rule ‘…do unto others as you would have them do unto you…’ (Matt 7:12). Actually, karma originated from Hinduism/Buddhism, yet it is practiced by the masses and seen as bringing upon oneself inevitable results, good or bad in this life. However, I would like to point out that the focus of this article is to elaborate on the Bible principle of sowing and reaping (Galatians 6:3). Bottom line—you will reap whatever seeds you have sowed and that includes the good, the bad and the ugly. Karma is up close, personal and custom made for each of us. Whatever you do today is

Effie Rolfe what will find you tomorrow. Ultimately, we are the producers and manufacturers of the results

we experience in life. Regardless of whether you realize it or not, we all have a say so in what we do. Thankfully, God’s grace covers us. I truly believe that if we were penalized for everything we did—we wouldn’t make it too far. According to Lamentations 3: 22-23 “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” God’s love and grace covers a multitude of sin. The actions that we take as well as the choices we make will determine our karma. So really this is not just about the big payback, it’s also about creating your legacy. How will you be remembered? The choices you make will mirror your life. The great news is we can make a 360-degree change for the better. Starting now, let us begin to rewrite the chapters of our lives to make sure we will be able to reflect on a beautiful life story. Let

love be the motivating factor for the seeds of blessings and kindness that you give. The good that you choose to or not to do will transcend culture, religion, nationally, socio-economic levels and beyond. The Bible states in Matthew 25:25-40 “For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.” Then, these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”

So karma is basically about sowing and reaping. Create your legacy and future by examining your current choices. Examine what you are consciously and unconsciously thinking and doing. These thoughts, actions and reactions will be the harvest of the seeds you have planted in your home, family, children, education, career, community, friends, gifts and talents, church as well your spiritual walk…? Remember, whatever you do today will determine the rest of your life and will eventually stare you in the face. What legacy are you creating…? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. ARTS & CULTURE

WORLD OF MUSIC By Barbara Wright-Pryor

Barbara Wright-Pryor

IN MEMORIAM – Dominique-René S. de Lerma I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dominique-René S.de Lerma, eminent scholar and the single-most researcher of and contributor to the history of Black music and Black musicians. The American musicologist and former professor of music history at Indiana UniversityBloomington, The Center for Black Music Research of Columbia College Chicago, and Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin had published more than 1000 works on the subject of music. Dr. de Lerma died October 15 at his home in Appleton Wisconsin. Our last conversation was slightly more than a month ago regarding our final project of digitizing the 1930s ledger containing the minutes and activities of Chicago Music

Dominique-René S. de Lerma Association (CMA), Br. No. 1, NANM, Inc. (since 1919) that we donated to archival collection at The Center for Black Music Research of Columbia College Chicago (CBMR). It was that ledger and Dr. de Lerma’s concise research and technical help that assisted me in preparing the program notes for The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2013 performances of composer Florence Beatrice Price’s “Mississippi River.” (Program notes may be viewed on africlassical.blogspot.com). 14

Even more recently, Dr. de Lerma contributed the program notes for the October 25, 2015 South Shore Opera Company of Chicago’s performance (Leslie B. Dunner, Music Director) at South Shore Cultural Center. “Composers Unmasked” featured arias and duets from operas by Black composers Le Chevalier de St. Georges aka Joseph Bologne (“The Anonymous Lover” and “Ernestine”); Harry Lawrence Freeman (“Voodoo”); and Nkeiru Okoye (“Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom”) performed by “TreDiva,” Chicago’s own critically-acclaimed sopranos, Jonita Lattimore, Anisha McFarland and Elizabeth Norman.. Tragically, “Dom” did not live to see the production’s resounding success. “Rest in peace, warrior for the cause, drum major for musical justice, dear friend and colleague.” A memorial event organized by his son Antonio Green and attended by local friends and colleagues was held in Appleton, Wisconsin where “Dom” resided and worked, most recently at Lawrence University. On October 27, 2015, Antonio Green emailed to Dr. de Lerma’s friends and associates and posted on africlassical.blogspot.com: “Hello All, I am writing this notice to let you know that my father DominiqueRené S. de Lerma passed on October 15, 2015. He did not want a formalized funeral or memorial service. I have created a website that will provide information about Dominique and some of the research projects that he was working on.

NU, Galvin Family honor Mary B. Galvin and Dawn Galvin Meiners for arts support By Nancy Berman, guest columnist Northwestern University and the Galvin Family honored Mary Galvin for her six-decade support of the arts and daughter, Dawn Galvin Meiners with the naming of the new Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall on the Evanston Lakefront campus. The event was held on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the University’s Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts. Mrs. Galvin’s love of the arts began at the age of six and her commitment to the arts has never wavered. The number of musical and arts organizations that she has supported is innumerable and include the Stradivarius Society of Chicago, Lyric Opera, The Art Institute and the Women’s Board of Northwestern University. Mrs. Galvin and several members of her family are graduates of Northwestern and the school is very dear to all of them. This was an opportunity for the Robert W. Galvin Foundation and Dawn Galvin Meiners to make a significant gift to Northwestern University to further education in the arts. Thus, the new performance area in the Ryan Center became the Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall. The 200 guests present entered the new Hall for a very exciting Inaugural Performance. Hosted by famed soprano Renée Fleming, the performing artists included Harolyn Black-

Soprano Renée Fleming and Dean Toni-Marie Montgomery well, Elli Choi, Vadim Gluzman, Eric Owens, Mary Michael Patterson, Philippe Quint, Christine Roccas and Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner. Each of these artists had at sometime been known and assisted by the honorees. Northwestern University’s President Morton Schapiro also offered comments and the program ended with singing by the National Broadway Chorus. Following the performance, there was a reception and dinner in a tent adjoining the Ryan Center. Christopher Galvin welcomed the guests, Monsignor Kenneth Velo gave a blessing and Henry Bienen, president emeritus of Northwestern University spoke briefly. The dining area was a tribute to the beauty and grace of the honorees. Cloths of green with silver undertones were highlighted by hy-

Fund Drive started for Football Player who died after Game By J. Coyden Palmer Family and friends of Andre Smith have started a GoFundMe page to help offset the burial expenses for the Bogan High School football player who died last week after a football game. Smith, 17, was hit hard in the later stages of a game against Chicago Vocational at Stagg Stadium. He collapsed during the handshake line after the game. He was rushed by ambulance to Christ Hospital where he died the following day. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Smith died of blunt force head trauma that he suffered during the game. Smith was the seventh high school football player killed this season nationwide. He was the first football player in Illinois to die in three years, according to the Illinois High School Association. “The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bogan High School student-athlete Andre Smith last night,” read a statement from IHSA Spokesperson Matt Troha. “It is truly a tragedy any time that we lose a young person. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family,

friends, teammates and the entire Bogan High School community.” His family and friends gathered in the south suburbs for a memorial vigil. There they shared fond memories of the young man they nicknamed “Six-Piece Dre” for his affinity of Harold’s Chicken wings. “We all know how we are losing so many people to street violence. Dre went out doing something he loves to do,” said his brother Eric Smith. “I am comforted that he was not a victim of violence but it still hurts.” Another brother said Andre was a jokester and comes from a football family. He said even the women in the family play football and everyone understands the risk they take when they step on the field. But like others the Crusader spoke with, he said Andre loved the sport too much to not play, as it was his dream. “He wanted to go to college and play football,” said Chris Smith, 33. “This was his sport. It’s going to be hard explaining this to his younger nieces and nephews and cousins who enjoyed being around him.” His mother, Jeanine Marie, has now suffered a double tragedy.

Andre Smith Andre’s father, who was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, was killed in a motorcycle accident when Andre was a young child. While his family lives in Country Club Hills, Andre was living with a family friend in the city for the past year, which is why he was enrolled at Bogan. Bogan Coach Terrell Alexander said there is no way to prepare for

a tragedy like this. He said as coaches you take precautions and you understand injuries will happen, but not something like this. He said Andre’s death has sent shockwaves through the team and entire school. There were counselors on hand last week at the school, but he said this situation is so unique and rare, you don’t even know where to begin.

“It’s not something you can write down and come up with a script for these young men,” Alexander said. The family is trying to raise $10,000 for burial expenses. As of Oct. 27, a total of $3,135 had been raised. To contribute, you may visit the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/7g7 zwasw
