Gardner wants Mayor to visit construction sites By Chinta Strausberg For those who have been asking what will retired business giant Ed Gardner do after holding a successful silent construction protest over the weekend, he is going to invite Mayor Rahm Emanuel to accompany him to these sites so he can see first hand that Blacks are a rarity in the workforce. Gardner said he would invite Mayor Rahm Emanuel to visit several sites so he can see for himself there are no African Americans working on these construction sites. When appearing on the WVON’s Cliff Kelley and later with Mark Wallace Show, Gardner, who was also on with attorney Sam Adams, Jr. and his partner, Victor P. Henderson, said, “I want the mayor of Chicago and the mayor of Evergreen Park to take two or three days to digest what they saw yesterday (Monday) and let them realize that Ed Gardner is a kind of unique item at this time, and I want the Black community to use it…” to gain attention to the absence of Black workers on construction sites. “Let me continue to do as much as I possibly can in the next eight to 10 days…” Gardner said he believes whites “may not

be able to find enough of us to fill all of the slots that I think are going to wake up as far as construction industry is concerned.” Friday, September 21, 2012 at around 10:30 a.m. was a wake-up call for the 87year-old business icon who was driving past a bunch of Black men selling drugs along 95th Street and just blocks farther west he drove by a construction site where all the workers were white or Hispanic. That stark contrast has created a lightening rod that has awaken the sleeping Black giant the same giant that in 1983 and 1987 elected the first Black mayor…the same giant that wields a $1 trillion buying power in America. While on the WVON shows Gardner was asked by a caller why aren’t Blacks the recipients of the federal government’s $20 billion to rehab homes in Illinois. Saying he was not aware of those available dollars, Gardner said, “As we build the strength in our community to control the dollars, then we’re going to be recognized as a people who are going to demand those opportunities.” With funding, Gardner said things can change but it is up to elected officials “to make the decisions” so when doors are opened opportunities will be available.

Former U.S. Senator Roland W. Burris said, “Dollars are presented in projects based on the political process. We are not

ED GARDNER (baseball cap) was joined by people from all walks of life Sunday during a demonstration to protest the lack of Black workers on a Southwest Side construction site. His supporters included U.S. Rep Danny K. Davis (far left), next to the Rev. Webb Evans. Gardner, the retired owner of Soft Sheen, issued a call for the mayors of Chicago and Evergreen Park to see the work situations at the construction sites.

After School Matters celebrate a decade of success By Wendell Hutson A Chicago non-profit organization celebrated a decade of success with its recent 10th Annual After School Matters gala. Since its inception in 1992 the organization has seen thousands of high school students participate in its various programs including many Black youth, said Mellody Hobson, board chairman for After School Matters and president of Chicago-based Ariel Investments LLC. “The work we do is so important to so many young people especially minority kids, which is a big reason why I got involved,” Hobson told the Crusader. “We know that a lot of our young people come from disadvantaged communities and we want to en-

courage them to take part in the many opportunities After School Matters has to offer.” According to Mary Ellen Caron, chief executive officer for After School Matters, 20,000 youth participated in their programs in 2011, and 57 percent were Black and 28 percent were Latino. “After School Matters partners with Chicago Public Schools where most of the students are not white but minority, so it is not surprising that our student population resembles theirs,” Caron said. “We also partner with the Chicago Public Library, Chicago Park District and community organizations.” Students also receive a stipend of $150 to $420 for their participation in some programs for the

CHICAGO TEACHERS VOTE TO RATIFY NEW CONTRACT Teachers, paraprofessionals school clinicians are one step closer to a new contract. The contract language was overwhelming ratified by 79.1 percent of Chicago Teachers Union members who casted valid ballots this past Tuesday. This is the highest approval rating for a contract in the history of the union, according to union officials. There were 20,765 valid ballots submitted—16,428 for the new agreement and 4,337against. Members of the Chicago Board of Education must also vote approve the contract before it becomes effective. CTU members have been without a contract since June 30. “This shows overwhelming recognition by our members that this contract represents a victory for students, communities and our profession,” said CTU President Karen Lewis. “Our members are coming are coming out of this with an even greater appreciation for the continued fight for public education. We thank our parents for standing with their children’s teachers, paraprofessionals and clinicians.”

Help Englewood re-brand and turn around its image The Residents Association of Greater Englewood (RAGE) is looking to social media to help that community change its image from a cradle of crime and despair to one of residents striving to improve the community. RAGE has entered a contest to win $2,500 to anchor a campaign to “Re-brand, Rebuild and Revitalize” Englewood. Rage President Aiysha Butler explained the organization can win the money if enough Chicagoans vote for RAGE. This sort of money-raising venture is known as “crowd-funding” and is becoming an increasing popular social media tool. The way it works is individuals or organizations post an idea to a crowd-funding site and anyone can vote for that idea by pledging to contribute any amount of money they wish. RAGE’s idea is on the Goodmaker site, the link to vote for the org is http://com-

munity1.maker.good.is/projects/RebrandEnglewood. Voters have until October 11 to vote and contribute. Butler explained “the money will be used to highlight Englewood success stories, sharing bold and positive messaging, and rebranding tactics. We know this will spark hope, value and help

eliminate the fear of residents.” Butler writes a regular blog and here is a link for those who want to learn more about the Englewood community. http://www.mrsenglewood.blogspot.com/ The organization has plans for an extensive outreach campaign with the positives about Englewood. “The funds will help us create and distribute memorabilia that highlight our love for Englewood such as: bracelets, bookmarks, t-shirts, yard and window signs, stickers stating, I AM ENGLEWOOD, Good is in Englewood, Peace in Englewood, etc. “We will also like to create art pieces to display on the vacant retail shops and homes throughout the area. We will create “Welcome to Englewood” signs in order to offer a sense of pride and value. We will take photos of residents and use these as billboards highlighting positive stories and images,” Butler added. She said

NEWS Residents present mayor with neighborhood problems By Wendell Hutson Residents living on the far South Side listed for Mayor Rahm Emanuel a host of problems plaguing the Black community during a recent roundtable discussion. In the first of a series of roundtable discussions Emanuel traveled to the Roseland community, an area plagued with crime, unemployment, low-income households and whose residents are predominately Black, according to census data. The mayor met with about 30 residents at the Metropolitan Family Services, a Chicago non-profit organization, where he addressed a host of things, such as homelessness, public schools, police protection, and opportunities for small (Black) businesses. “I wanted to hear from residents and what concerns they have before I present my budget proposal to the City Council,” Emanuel told the group. “It is important to me to first find out if there are things not being addressed that need to be addressed. If so, then I can make room in the budget to address those things.” Thanks to a partnership between he city and Catholic Charities to transport the homeless to shelters the city is expected to save $1.7 million a year. The mayor said that savings will be used to fund other social services. “There are 2,000 homeless adolescents on the street and I want to help them before they become homeless adults,” added the mayor. “We simply do not have enough beds for this many homeless youth but I am working on changing that.”

Mary Nash, a retired civil service employee, asked the mayor what plans he has for improving public schools particularly in impoverished communities like Roseland. “I campaigned on this promise and delivered. Our kids are no longer shortchanged when it comes to school. They have a longer day. We have some great teachers and now teachers can spend more time with their students to make them great also,’ he said. “In addition, we have given principals the power to hire who they want so we can hold them more accountable for the performance of their schools.” A single parent with two daughters, Craig Hudson, inquired about funding for after school programs like Upward Bound, which his oldest daughter attended at Metropolitan Family Services. “My daughter was accepted into Fisk University (a historically Black university in Tennessee) and I don’t think that would have happened had she not been in the Upward Bound program,” Hudson told the mayor. “I am a small businessman so I do not have the time I would like to spend with my kids to help them with their school work. My parents help out when they can but I really depend on after school programs to fill in the blanks.” The mayor said Upward Bound, a college preparatory program for high school students, is a good example of an after school program that not only provides a safe environment for youth but also an educational one too.

Gardner wants Emanuel . . .

RESIDENTS PRESENT MAYOR with a list of concerns during a roundtable between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and people living in the Roseland community on the far South Side.

“So how can we duplicate the success of Upward Bound at city facilities like the libraries and parks?” Emanuel asked. “There was once a time when our park districts offered reading programs as part of after school. I have instructed my staff to look into how we can implement this again.” He added that current funding levels for such programs as Safe Haven at churches and the Safe Passage program for Chicago Public Schools will remain intact. And that funding has been increased to install more security cameras around public high schools.

$8 million available for Cook County prospective . . . (Continued from page 1) WFC) in announcing CityLIFTSM, a program designed to support the city’s housing market recovery by offering down payment assistance grants totaling $8.2 million and other resources to prospective Chicagoarea homebuyers. CityLIFTSM is the result of a $175 million fair lending settlement between the DOJ, Attorney General Madigan’s office and Wells Fargo that included $50 million earmarked for community improvement programs that, in part, help consumers buy homes in housing markets hit hard by the nation’s foreclosure crisis. The Chicago program’s $8.2 million in down payment assistance grants is being offered to prospective homebuyers in Chicago and 30 suburbs in Cook County. Prospective homebuyers must first pre-qualify for mortgage financing to apply for grants of $15,000 that can go toward the down payment on the purchase of a Chicago-area home. Added Attorney General Lisa Madigan, “No single program can reverse the effects of the worst housing downturn in our lifetime, but through this settlement, families in our hardest hit communities will gain a new-found opportunity to realize the dream of owning their own home.” The DOJ, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and Wells Fargo each pointed to the opportunities the recent settlement agreement offered homebuyers in Chicago and in other markets hit hard by the nation’s foreclosure crisis. “Under the settlement reached with the Justice Department in July, Wells Fargo is required to develop CityLIFTSM to provide assistance to homebuyers in metropolitan areas around the country, including in Chicago,” said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. “I applaud Wells Fargo for taking the necessary steps to create CityLIFTSM. Partnerships like this one are fundamental to ensuring equal opportunity for all.” “This program offers an opportu-

There are certain decisions that are made whether or not it’s a foreign country where you see $40 million you see going some where else or whether it’s a local spending project.” Burris said when he was in the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives sent over a bill in 2009 that was for $3 billion for inner city jobs. “The Senate Committee, the Republicans would not even let the bill be heard in committee.” Trying to overcome that barrier, Burris said he suggested $2 billion, then $1 billion. However, Burris said the Republicans turned thumbs down on his recommendations. He said they didn’t want “any dollars spent and the bill didn’t even get a hearing. That’s the political process that took place. In 2009 and 2012, “you didn’t see any of the direct grant money

that was trying to make a difference in our community with jobs…because the Republicans wouldn’t let the money come through. It’s just that simple,” said Burris. Gardner was asked why there are so many Hispanics on the construction sites in the Black community. He said it is the same reason “you have in some industries the Polish people and the Russian people getting the jobs because they are the ones who take less dollars to do those jobs.” Gardner said Latinos “are getting that money that they’d never had before to take care of their families. I think it’s up to people in politics to say what can we do to stop…. Do you want immigration to continue or do you not want it to continue? There is some reason why illegal immigration continues in our community.” He said there are some who are not willing to pay their fair share. Gardner said this has to be resolved by elected officials on the federal level to resolve this problem.

nity for down payment-challenged homebuyers to benefit from the low interest rates and affordable home values that are helping to set the stage for a recovery in Chicago’s housing markets,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “This type of assistance will help new homebuyers afford homes in neighborhoods recovering from the foreclosure crisis.” Jon Campbell, Wells Fargo’s executive vice president and head of Community and Government Relations, said, “As America’s largest home lender, Wells Fargo is committed to using programs, such as CityLIFTSM, to work constructively with local, state and federal partners as we help communities overcome the effects of the worst housing downturn in a generation and turn vacant houses into homes again.” The CityLIFTSM program is modeled after Wells Fargo’s NeighborhoodLIFTSM program, which to date has made $88 million in down payment assistance grants and homebuyer support programs available to prospective homebuyers in 10 markets and has made free homebuyer education resources accessible to 8,520 consumers. Under the terms of the settlement, Wells Fargo plans to offer CityLIFTSM events in eight markets over the next 24 months, partnering with NeighborWorks America as it makes the dream of homeownership more accessible to homebuyers facing down payment challenges. Chicago residents will have their first opportunity to apply for CityLIFTSM down payment assistance grants at a free homebuyer workshop on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27, at McCormick Place, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Prospective homebuyers have until Wednesday, Oct. 24, to register in advance for the event at www.wellsfargo.com/citylift. fied lender will be able to apply to reserve down payment assistance grants of $15,000 that can then be used over the next 60 days toward down payments on home purchases within Chicago and 30 other suburbs in Cook County. In addition, prospective homebuyers at McCormick Place will have an opportunity to visit the on-site Wells Fargo Affordable Home TourSM viewing center, where homes available for sale in Chicago neighborhoods can be previewed. Free bus tours from noon to 5 p.m. each day also will be offered to view homes. (Self-directed tours are also encouraged.) The CityLIFTSM program is available for the following locations: Bedford Park, Bellwood, Berwyn, Blue Island, Calumet City, Chicago, Chicago Heights, Cicero, Country Club Hills, Dolton, Glenwood, Harvey, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Lansing, Markham, Matteson, Maywood, Oak Lawn, Park Forest, Richton Park, Riverdale, South Holland, Clearing, Forest View, Stickney, Ford Heights, Lynwood, South Chicago Heights, and Sauk Village, IL. To qualify for down payment assistance, applicants must meet certain criteria including annual income not exceeding 120 percent of the median income for the area (income maximums vary depending on family size); an eight-hour homebuyer education session with a HUD-approved counselor such as NeighborWorks America affiliates; and a commitment to stay in the home for five years and qualification for a first mortgage on the property. The CityLIFTSM program is designed to provide down payment assistance and homebuyer education programs in areas most impacted by the financial crisis. The CityLIFTSM program was developed in connection with the 2012 settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Illinois Attorney General’s office, and is a collaboration between Wells Fargo Bank N.A. and NeighborWorks America. 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL AFRICAN AMERICAN CONSUMERS - STILL VITAL, STILL GROWING It is a common notion to label the African American community as though it is monolithic. And though there are many things that provide evidence to the contrary, the perception still persists. The Nielsen Company, along with the National Newspaper Publishers Association, have collaborated on a 2012 report entitled African-American Consumers: Still Vital, Still Growing, that highlights characteristics about the community that may not be widely known. Nielsen is a global information and measurement company that measures what consumers watch and what consumers buy. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is a 72-year-old federation of more than 200 Black community newspapers. The full report, which is 26 pages long, can debunk a lot of myths about the face of Black America. For starters, there is a widespread perception that the Black community is impoverished; is poor. According to the report, however, Black Americans are still the largest racial minority group in America with a projected buying power of $1.1 Trillion by 2015! Moreover, the U.S. Black population is 43 million. This is larger than 163 of the 195 countries in the world including Argentina, Poland, Canada and Australia, according to the report. Other highlights from the report - Black households are 127% more likely to include a single parent, usually a woman; 48% of Black grandparents who live in the same household with their grandchildren serve as their primary caregivers; 10% of Black households earn $100,000 or more, and 35% earn $50,000 or more. And while 91% of African Americans believe that Black media is more relevant to them, the total dollars spent with African American media ($2.10 billion) is just under 2% of the total advertising dollars spent with general market media ($120 billion) during the period of January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011, according to the report. Someone is missing the ball here. A vast consumer network is going underutilized and underappreciated. Other highlights; many African Americans conduct research on mobile phones before purchasing them; both Generation Y and the Baby Boomers consume a lot of television (95% and 96%, respectively); and radios, computers, and mobile phones are very popular. Another of note: during September 2011 through June, 2012, Black movies garnered a total of $235,762,704! That’s a lot of dough! When looking at these, and other characteristics of the African American community, it becomes apparent that the community is far stronger than it is generally thought to be. The title of the report, African American Consumers: Still Vital, Still Growing, is wildly appropriate. There are vast resources available, so much so, that if those resources were to be applied strategically, they could literally change the economic face of America and, perhaps, the world. It just remains for members of the community to realize this and to act on it. And it’s time that a new perception of the community move into dominance - the collective community is by no means poor, not with a projected $1.1 Trillion in buying power, and this fact needs to be trumpeted from the rooftops. Wake up, you sleeping giant - there are worlds to conquer!

I hope I am the only one who is hearing this nonsense about the recently announced collaborative project Mayor Richard Daley orchestrated with the City of Gary. After Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson visited with Daley in the winter, the two began discussing a plan to reverse Gary’s fortunes. This week the pair announced the fruits of those meetings – the students in Daley’s graduate public policy classes have been dispatched to study and developed strategies for abandoned land use, vacant buildings, taxes and a host of other issues. The thinking is these young minds can apply unique strategies to help Gary. It is a good move because these are bureaucrats or overpriced consultants trying to sell a one-size-fits-all urban improvement package. These are people who see Gary as an opportunity will apply best practices and get a number of solutions – solutions others steeped in old school ways may never think of. But some people are whining that because all of the students are white and Gary’s population is overwhelmingly Black, the students are out of place, or that they can’t understand Gary’s problems. This is backward thinking at its worst. These students are judging

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Race is not a factor in the U of C – Gary collaborative Dear Editor:

Garyites or really interacting with them on a deep level. They are studying records, documents, histories and other empirical findings. Gary needs all of the help it can get and Daley is probably the most credible individual who can help the Gary mayor address the problems she is facing. Daley established his bona fides over two decades as mayor and dealing with Black folks on every level. More importantly, he established himself as an urban progressive, particularly in the areas of development and public spaces. Daley left office a little over a year ago under his own power – no illness, criminal investigations or those other things that put mayors out of office before they are ready to go. He was considered by his peers as one of the best of their ranks. So it stands to reason that Gary’s mayor would reach out and seek his counsel and help. It makes sense such a project, as the one in Gary, would appeal to him. There is an enormous challenge and he has always liked those. There is a chance to get some highly credible work for his students. The project also gets him back in the public’s eye in a limited, non-controversial way. Mayor Freeman-Wilson is a former judge, former secretary of state and Harvard University Law School grad. Those facts mean she has crossed any number of great minds she probably could have called instead of Daley. The mayor knows her city and figured Daley would offer the soundest advice I

suspect. I have to believe she would have opted for an acquaintance or colleague from a previous job had she not had access to Daley. I have to believe that if Mayor Freeman-Wilson sees no problem inviting Chicago’s old mayor in, then there is none – especially of a racial focus. Sincerely, Anton Estrada (Continued on page 16)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

The Stars Align for the African Diaspora By Harry C. Alford All research, educated conclusions, anthropological findings and biblical writings cite the continent of Africa as the beginning of mankind. It is the venue of mathematics, construction management, architecture, medicine, and most importantly, CIVILIZATION. No continent has gone through so much exploitation, invasion, colonialization, slavery, dictatorships and pilferage of natural resources as Africa. Yet, still it grows and glows before the modern world. It is the combination of its resources as well as the resiliency of its people; “that which does not kill us; makes us stronger.” Today, we stand strong, educated, traveled and organized at last. We now come forward to set positive forces to further our future and guarantee the success of our children. We control our legacy and will now set an economic policy to guarantee the fruits that were seeded in our past. The PanAfrican Entrepreneurs Conference will have its first conference on November 15 – 18, 2012 in Houston, TX (www.panafricanec.org). Its long range goal is to link descendents of Africa who are in business. We are outreaching brothers and sisters from Australia, Fiji Is-

Harry C. Alford lands and other entities in the Pacific Ocean with North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa and all points in between. The mission of PAEC is: To create an arena for entrepreneurs and business people within the Black Diaspora to meet and further their business connections. Also, to suggest policy improvement and issue awareness that will benefit the status of Black entrepreneurs internationally. The Strategic Plan to achieve the above mission is: 1. Project Strategies: To promote, help develop and expose pro-

curement opportunities for our entrepreneurs. These opportunities will include infrastructure, energy, water management, agri-business, telecommunications, fashion, matchmaking, logistics, transportation, healthcare, environmental manage ment, bidding/tender/RFP management, education facilities, fishing industry, rare minerals. 2. Capital Formation: Using vehicles such as the World Bank, IMF, EXIM Bank, Hermes, Asian Development Bank, OPIC, Pan African Linkage, Equity Funding, SPAEC, European Union, etc. to fund the above activities and provide robust growth and activity. 3. Trade Policy Formation: Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) oversight, Corporate Responsibility Guidelines, Specific Free Trade Agreements, Dispute Resolutions, Tariffs and Duty Relief, Corruption Intolerance. 4. Virtual and Instant Communications: Website (www.panafricanec.org), Facebook, Twitter, Social Media. 5. Governance: Through Regional Committees and Delegates to the Annual Conference who will decide policy and direction in a democratic and transparent manner. The Regions are: 1. North America (including the Caribbean); 2. South America; 3. Europe; 4. North Africa

and the Middle East; 5. Eastern Africa; 6. Southern Africa; 7. Central Africa; 8. Western Africa; 9. Asia and 10. Pacific Rim. The history of the African Diaspora is incomplete. We are in the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand. Historians and anthropologists merely say that we have been here for at least 1,500 years. They don’t start to explain how we got there but we are definitely there. There is a common bond and camaraderie when we first meet and each time thereafter. That common bond is that we have the same “home” – Mother Africa. One thing for sure is that our future is certain. It is our destiny and fate to excel economically. As Booker T. Washington once stated, “If we just build our businesses and only do business with each other, we not only will survive but prosper.” The time to make that a reality starts here. Our Motherland holds the greatest resources the world has to offer. Its rich soil comprises of 60% of the total potential farmland in the world. That’s right, we hold the “Bread Basket” for the entire globe and our resources can fuel all industries. Let us manage it wisely and cherish what God has blessed us with. They have enslaved us, raped us and committed genocide on us. Sometimes we would even do it to

ourselves. But still we rise! God has given us a purpose and no matter what has gotten in the way, we will complete that purpose. All praise to the Lord for allowing us to be descendents of the great continent Africa. The time is now! This conference will be the kick off for this noble initiative. Every segment of the Diaspora population will be linked to what we are about to do. The National Black Chamber of Commerce will be the consultant to the conference which is a separate entity (501c3). Board seats will comprise of entrepreneurs representing the ten regions. The focus of the conference is purely international and trade specific. Maxine Waters Case: A Political Train Wreck By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The headlines proclaim that Rep. Maxine Waters, the outspoken Democrat from California, has been cleared of charges that she violated House ethics by advocating on behalf of a Black bank in which her husband held a substantial investment. The real story, however, is that Waters’ case serves as Exhibit A for how a Black elected official who has done nothing wrong can have her name smeared for several years largely because of partisan politics. Although the official report is filled with carefully calibrated references that downplays the infighting and partisanship that characterized the investigation, it is clear from the report that when the investigation commenced, it was obvious that Waters had never tried to hide her husband’s participation in OneUnited Bank, the Boston-based institution at the center of the investigation, and that she believed she was acting on behalf of the National Bankers Association, an organization of Black banks, when she arranged meetings between a group of bankers and then-Secretary of Treasury. The Chicago Crusader

OneUnited, a member of the National Bankers Association, was in danger of closing its doors and was seeking $50 million in federal bailout money to stay afloat. Waters’ husband, Sidney Williams, a former board member of OneUnited, owned bank stock valued at $350,000 that he would have lost if the bank had tanked. House conflict-of-interest rules prohibit members of Congress from using their official position on behalf of an entity in which they have a personal interest. In Waters’ case, as a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee and a strong advocate for Black banks, it was not uncommon for her to arrange meetings between federal officials and the National Bankers Association. According to the report “Outside Counsel concluded that Representative Waters reasonably believed, at the time she requested the meeting, that the attendees would be speaking on behalf of minority banks generally. While it appears that all of the minority bankers who attended the meeting were associated with OneUnited, and that OneUnited was alone in requesting substantial financial assistance from the Treasury Department at the meeting, the record indicates that Representative Waters did not have rea-

George E. Curry son to know of either of these facts when she arranged the meeting.” Waters made no secret of her husband’s involvement in OneUnited. She made it part of her public financial disclosure reports. In addition, according to the Ethics Committee finding, “it appears that Representative Waters recognized and made efforts to avoid a conflict of interest with respect to OneUnited. She informed the then-Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee that she was ‘not going to be involved in’ OneUnited’s request for assistance from the Treasury Department, and then relayed this decision to her COS [Chief of Staff].” House Republicans were aware of

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

the pertinent facts but decided to pursue the case against Waters anyway. The final report noted that there was “an extended, and at time contentious investigation of the allegations.” The committee hired William “Billy” Martin, a respected AfricanAmerican attorney, to serve as outside counsel. His investigation found that some staff members communicated only with members of one party without communicating with the rest of the committee and that one staffer had made comments that were “racially insensitive and completely inappropriate.” Although Martin did not name the specific party in question, it is easy to deduce that staffers were communicating with Republicans, who hold a majority on the committee, and not Democrats. In addition, Republican committee members were also communicating with House leadership about the investigation, which was supposed to be non-partisan. The investigation became so tainted that, in what they described as a move to assure that Waters was being treated fairly, the entire 10member panel and staff investigating Waters were replaced. And it was this new committee, working with Martin, that exonerated Waters. Saturday, October 6, 2012

“Outside Counsel recommended and the Waters Committee concluded that Representative Waters did not violate any House Rule, law, regulation, or other applicable standard of conduct,” the report stated. It did not reach the same conclusion about Mikael Moore, the congresswoman’s chief of staff and grandson. The report said, “However, the Waters Committee finds that Representative Waters’ COS violated House rules by taking specific actions that would accrue to the benefit of OneUnited, a bank Representative Waters had a significant financial interest in and which interest could have been significantly impacted by the actions.” The committee found Moore’s testimony on the matter lacked credibility and issued him a letter of reproval. Congress prohibits its members from hiring close relatives, a definition that does not include grandchildren. Because of the Waters case, however, the committee members think that time has come to broaden the definition of close relatives to include grandchildren. Waters contended all along – and the evidence was there to sup(Continued on page 16) 5

COMMENTARY

Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

WE MUST LISTEN TO THE SPIRIT OF OUR ANCESTORS (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill African people throughout the world are uniformly under the yoke of white supremacy. This has created tremendous problems for

us as a people. There are solutions to these problems that we must be reminded of time and time again. These solutions have come from the wisdom of the ancestors and their deep thought. Our thinkers and activists of the nineteenth and twentieth-centuries have set forth many of the solutions to the problems and crisis of African people. From time to time, movements have unfolded that have picked up on the ideas of these thinkers and activists. When this has occurred serious challenges to breaking the yoke of white supremacy seemed within reach. However, due to internal and external manipulations of these movements they became short lived. For example, one of the most successful of these movements was the Garvey Movement of the 1920s. As African people in the twentyfirst-century, it is imperative that we collectively join and participate in the Reparations Movement as we seek to dismantle white supremacy. Let us briefly examine some of the ideas our leaders presented in the nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries that should be the foundation for establishing the

framework for the growing Reparations Movement at this critical juncture in the history of African people. Jean Jacques Dessalines, one of the leaders of the Haitian Revolution in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-centuries said, “Never again shall a colonist, or European, set his foot upon this territory with the title of master or proprietor. This resolution shall henceforward form the basis of our constitution.” Henry Highland Garnet, a midnineteenth-century Black Nationalist thinker and organizer explained, in the following statement that African people need “…a grand center of Negro nationality, from which shall flow the streams of commercial, intellectual, and political power which shall make colored people respected everywhere.” Martin Robeson Delany, Harvard trained physician of the midnineteenth-century and leading Black Nationalist espoused, “We must act for ourselves— We are a nation within a nation; as the Poles in Russia, the Hungarians in Austria, the Welsh, Irish, and Scotch in the British dominions. But we have been, by our oppressor, despoiled of our purity, and corrupt-

ed in our native characteristics, so that we have inherited their vices and but few of their virtues, leaving us really a broken people.” Edward Wilmot Blyden, a leading educator and Pan Africanist of the mid and late nineteenth-centuries said, “We need some African power, some great center of the race where our physical, pecuniary, and intellectual strength may be collected. We need some spot where such an influence may go forth in behalf of the race as shall be felt by the nations. We are now so scattered and divided that we can do nothing… So long as we remain thus divided, we may expect imposition… An African nationality is our great need… We must build up Negro States; we must establish and maintain the various institutions.” One of the greatest Pan Africanist and Black Nationalist leaders of the twentieth-century, Marcus Mosiah Garvey succinctly states, “Africa for the Africans at home and abroad.” Another great Black Nationalist leader of the twentieth-century, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad challenged that “we must do for self.” Professor Joseph Harris in commenting on the work of William Leo Hansberry, one of our leading

authorities on African History in the twentieth-century said, “Hansberry realized that the African students not only had to contend with life in this racist country, but that they also had the obligation to return to their countries with both the skills acquired at Howard and an Afrocentric perspective of their heritage.” And finally, the editorial commentary in the Afrocentric World Review, Vol. I, No. I, Winter 1973, explained, “In this crucial world wide scramble for Africa, African minds and African bodies, we must proclaim in our own right African interest first… Blacks must cease becoming a vest pocket people for other national interests and world pursuits, and hasten to revive the age old traditional quest for a World African Center that will make us once again masters in our own house.” In this spirit, let us listen to the wisdom of our ancestors as we continue to forge ahead in strengthening our Black Liberation and Reparations Movements. Our challenge is to study our history, listen to the wisdom of our ancestors, and take appropriate action. Long live the Spirit and Wisdom of our Ancestors!

IT AIN’T OVER ‘TIL IT’S OVER By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist In late September the “nonpartisan” website Real Clear Politics (realclearpolitics.com) reported that President Obama leads Republican nominee Mitt Romney is several battleground states. According to the polls, President Obama leads by 5.2 percent in Ohio, 4.5 percent in Virginia, 4.2 percent in Nevada, 4 percent in Iowa, and 3 percent in Florida. Do we believe the polls? I’m not so sure. But I surely don’t believe these polls should alter an aggressive effort to re-elect this Democratic president. There are lots of ways to do voter suppression. One is to deny people ballots, or to change the rules on voting. Mandatory stateissued ID, new and more distant polling places, and all of the shenanigans documented by the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (www.lawyerscommittee.org) are other methods of voter suppression. In some cities or states, police cars have been parked outside polling places, intimidating those who 6

on their efforts. And that’s exactly what some Republicans are counting on. Jay Cost, who writes for the conservative Weekly Standard, told radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt that “Democratic enthusiasm is going to recede.” Another analyst said that the current polls are assuming a “record Democratic turnout.” Still another said that while 90 percent of registered Republicans will vote for Romney and 90 percent of Democrats will vote for President Obama, the race will be decided by independents, many of whom are not polled. My grandmother used to say, “Don’t feed me fat meat and tell me it ain’t greasy.” Or, “Don’t spit on me and tell me it’s raining.” In other words, don’t believe the hype. To be sure, President Obama may be leading the polls in some states, but polls are like putting your finger in the air to see which way the wind blows. They are like calling the basketball game based on who is leading after the first quarter. They are like handicapping the horse race based on who is first out of the gate. They tell a story about a

Black community telling people they didn’t need to vote because Democratic candidates President

Obama and Governor O’Malley had already won. He was convicted of four counts of fraud last year and faces jail time. Other communities have experienced similar pranks, including one that crudely told people that the election was on a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday, and another that said polls were open until 10 p.m. although they closed at 8 p.m.. Well-informed voters repel these shenanigans, but some voters fall for them. If such tawdry tactics affect only a few voters in a few precincts, they can have an impact on an electoral outcome. That’s why it is so effective to go door to door on Election Day, to provide rides for those who need them, and to do anything and everything to ensure that every voter gets out. That’s why it also makes sense to encourage early voting, especially for the elderly and others who may have challenges getting to the polls. I am wondering if these polls showing President Obama in the lead in key states represent another form of subtle voter suppression. If we think the President is leading, then some will pull back

may have minor infractions of the law, including unpaid parking tickets. Another way to suppress the vote is to attempt to influence voter attitudes. For example, in the 2008 election, a Republican operative did robo-calls into the

point in time, but not about the outcome. Thus, polling results are both good news and provisional news. The good news – the polls tell us that an Obama win is not only possible but likely. The provisional news – President Obama won’t win unless we work for it. Imagine that the basketball team started chilling in the second quarter because they led in the first, or that the horse first out of the gate decided to slow up because, after all, the win was decided. We’ve all heard about the flash in the pan, the tortoise and the hare, and the importance of persistence. These polls ought to be a motivator for those who support President Obama. The goal ought to be to make these poll results a reality by ensuring that Democratic enthusiasm increases, not recedes, and that Democratic turnout does hit record numbers. It ain’t over ‘til it’s over, and the outcome of this election will depend on the work that is done in the next several weeks. Julianne Malveaux is a D.C.based economist and author. DAGWOOD AND BLONDIE Ima couldn’t wait around to see the debate before submitting this, but Ima had a thought. As you know I’m from the old school so my memory keeps going back to Dagwood Bumstead and Blondie, his wife, a cartoon of days gone by. I swear that’s who Romney and his wife must be, the reincarnation of Dagwood and Blondie. Dagwood was a bumbling character and after the revelation about the 47% of freeloaders he told his rich supporters about, he sure fits this

BUSINESS CFPB continues crackdown on deceptive credit card marketing practices Discover Card to refund $2 million to more than 3.5 million consumers

Civil Penalty Fund. Earlier this year, CFPB’s first enforcement action against Capital One found similar deceptive tactics in selling credit card addon services. As a result, Capital One agreed to refund $140 million to two million Capital One customers. An additional $25 million penalty was also assessed. These two enforcement actions

By Charlene Crowell For the second time this year, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has taken strong enforcement steps against deceptive marketing practices. Through CFPB’s joint enforcement action with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), more than 3.5 million consumers with Discover Card accounts will receive approximately $200 million. Restitution will be awarded to all consumers who were charged for one or more add-on products between December 1, 2007 and August 31, 2011. Payment Protection was marketed as a product that allows consumers to put their payments on hold for up to two years in the event of unemployment, hospitalization, or other qualifying life events. Discover also sold its Credit Score Tracker, designed to allow a customer unlimited access to his or her credit reports and credit score. The third product was Identity Theft Protection, which was marketed as providing daily credit monitoring. Lastly, Discover’s Wallet Protection product was sold as a service to help a consumer cancel credit cards in the event that his or her wallet is stolen. Commenting on the actions, Richard Cordray, CFPB Director, said, “This is the second action that the Bureau has taken, in coordination with a fellow regulator, to address the deceptive marketing of credit card add-on products. We have also published a compliance bulletin to put other institutions more specifically on notice that such tactics are illegal and should be halted. We continue to expect that more such actions will follow. In the meantime, we are signaling as clearly as we can that other financial institutions should review their marketing practices to ensure that they are not deceiving or misleading consumers into purchasing financial products or ser-

sent to a third party, or solicit personal information to receive funds due. Suspected scams should be reported to CFPB’s toll-free number, 855-411-CFPB. Using scripts with misleading language matched by fast-talking telemarketers, federal regulators found that consumers were: • Enrolled without their consent; • Misled about the fact that there was a charge for the products; • Misled as to when charges for the add-on services would be applied; and • Were unaware of eligibility limitations for certain benefits like employment or pre-existing medical conditions. No affected consumer needs to take any action to receive what is owed. Consumers with a current Discover card will receive a credit to his/her account. Consumers with closed Discover accounts will either receive a check by mail, or the restitution will be applied to any remaining balance on the card. Beyond these refunds, additional enforcement actions require Discover to stop deceptive marketing, submit a compliance plan to both CFPB and FDIC for approval and submit to an independent audit. As with CFPB’s similar enforcement action against Capital One, penalty fees will also be applied. Discover will split a $14 million penalty between the U.S. Treasury Department and the CFPB’s

COMMUNITY

Women making themselves No. 1 at Girls Night Out Nearly 200 sisters, mothers, wives and BFFs gathered at the Oak Lawn Hilton for the Fifth Annual Girls Night Out event on September 26. It was a night for women to treat themselves to good wine, dinning and share stories with each other. “Women are the cornerstone of families and communities,” said Eileen McNichols, RN, MSN, manager of Women’s Wellness Consultants at Little Company of Mary Hospital (“LCMH”). “The Girls Night Out event is about giving women permission to make themselves ‘number one’ on the list and focus on their own needs.” Dr. Nancy Taft, a fellowship trained breast surgeon and medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at LCMH gave the keynote presentation. Dr. Taft understands that women have unique and variable health needs throughout the different stages of life. In her presentation, “Stay Abreast of the Best,” Dr. Taft provided the most up-to-date life saving information about breast health screening, prevention and treatment. After the informative presentation, attendees discovered how to become “The Resilient Woman” as Joan Murphy, RN, Ph.D., director of Women’s Wellness Consultants at LCM, brought her wisdom, humor and secrets of resiliency. Joan Murphy used the terms “pioneers” and “comeback girls” to describe the passion and strength of women. Joan believes that all women have a true inner strength. “We need to take a step back and look at the fact that we are the heroes of our families,” said Murphy. The Women’s Wellness Consultants at LCM were the recent recipients of the Sister Nancy Boyle Award for Excellence at Crystal Heart Ball this year. Since their formation, Women’s Wellness Consultants have provided innovative wellness programs conducted by registered nurses. Their focus has always included the holistic approach of body, mind and spirit. Joan Murphy is so passionate about women’s health and well-being that she has developed over 40 workshops and presented these not only to this community but nationwide over the years. The Women’s Wellness Consultants are committed to advocating for women and empowering them to take control of their health through health awareness programs, screening for risk factors and providing opportunities for lifestyle changes. The new West Pavilion replacement Patient Tower is the home

of the Women’s Wellness Consultants Resource Center. The Women’s Center for Life and Health will include diagnostic imaging, the Nationally Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center and the Family Birth Center. The Women’s Center will provide women with healthcare services ranging from routine wellness exams and screenings to advanced diagnostic facilities for even the most critical health conditions. ENTERTAINMENT

The NEW Four-One-One By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor ACCLAIMED!: In 2010 with his debut album as a leader, "Things to Come," vocalist Milton Suggs established himself as an artist to be aware of and watch closely. He cements that idea with a strong showing in 2012 with the first volume in a much anticipated series of albums simply and appropriately entitled, "Lyrical." Lyrical, Volume I was recorded in late 2011 with some fine instrumental talent out of the Midwest. Detroit pianist Michael Jellick,

Milton Suggs bassist Joshua Ramos and drummer Greg Artry comprise the rhythm section while several talented horn players including trumpeters Corey Wilkes and Marquis Hill, as well as saxophonist Christopher McBride make strong statements as soloists. True to its title, the albums repertoire consists of arrangements by Milton Suggs of compositions from some of the most beloved musicians and composers in jazz all with original lyrics by Suggs. The album opens with three Wayne Shorter compositions: first, the powerful war-like anthem "Before It's Too Late" (originally called "Armageddon"), followed by "Walking Out" ("Footprints"), before winding down to a moving ballad in "Jayme's Song ("Infant Eyes"), a father's ode to his newborn daughter. The musical as well as lyrical content of this album is an eclectic display of different styles as well as subject matter. With styles ranging from straight ahead swing, to bossa, to R&B influenced grooves, Suggs offers the diversity and accessibility that is coming to define his work. It has been two years since the release of Milton's acclaimed debut album, and between now and then he certainly hasn't been resting on his laurels. In addition to performing throughout the country in places such as The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Milton has been writing. Not only has he been building a catalogue of music for later recording and release, but he has also spent much of his time crafting lyrics to the melodies of many of his favorite well known and lesser known jazz compositions to be released on subsequent volumes. "'Things to Come' was my manifesto, a declaration of some of the directions I intend to go in my career. So I've really been taking time to see those goals through to fulfillment," Suggs says. "There is so much great music out there that the possibilities seem endless when it comes to putting words to melodies. I really enjoyed the project because it gives me the opportunity to step away from writing music and really focus on my appreciation for those great tunes by other artists." When asked what possibilities might lie ahead within his career Suggs had this to say, "I definitely intend to keep putting out volumes of the 'Lyrical' series, but for my next immediate project I would like to do an album of all original compositions. But for now, I'll just focus on making sure this album gets heard." With a combination of great tunes, solid arrangements, exceptional vocals and great lyrics accomplishing that goal should not be a problem. 12

Riccardo Muti leads CSO and Anne-Sophie Mutter in Symphony Ball Concert music presented in honor of Georg Solti Centennial A jubilant audience, although somewhat smaller than in previous years, welcomed the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) back to the fold for the September 29 Symphony Ball official grand-opening concert of the 2012-2013 season. The CSO musicians had staged a two-day walkout that began Saturday, September 22 and ended Tuesday, September 25 with the official signing of a new three-year contract with the CSO Association. The concert opened with Maestro Muti leading the orchestra in a dramatic rendition of Richard Wagner’s Overture to “The Flying Dutchman” and closed with a dynamic and expressive performance of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, Op. 49 (with recorded cannon sound effects), a work usually associated with outdoor performances, but most appropriately rendered in an indoor version without dynamic levels that might have caused ear-splitting damage otherwise.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

Church teens get glimpse of bank vault By Elaine Hegwood Bowen Young male teens from Generational Blessings Family Worship Center aren’t only being taught the ways to living moral, respectful lives, but they are also being taught the advantages of good financial stewardship and planning at a young age. As a part of a week-long money management camp underwritten by Glenn Dougherty, one of the mentors at the Chicago Heightsbased church, three 13-year-olds were recently treated to a tour of Naperville Bank , including the bank vault. Melanie Jane Nicolas, CEO and founder of the Naperville-based Kids Wealth International Club, Inc., arranged the tour. Members of the two-yearold organization believe in “helping your kids get rich in a fun way.” The KWIC Money Camp taught the teens how to manage and multiply money so they can reach financial freedom, Nicolas said. “We start with wealth principles such as “pay yourself first,” and we teach the kids a system to manage their money. We also teach them how to invest in the three wealth pillars of real estate, stocks, and business.” During the classes, the kids learn leadership, self-esteem, relationship building, teamwork and how to have fun. While fun is always good for teens, the more serious side of financial responsibility is also important, said Dougherty, who has invested in real estate and who now owns an Allstate Insurance Agency. “I feel that your credit is your life, and you pay more for everything when you have bad credit, if you can get anything at all. To be looked at as leaders in the family, you have to be able to

provide for the family,” he said. “I wanted to give the young men ambition, and I wanted them to want more out of life than what they see in their neighborhoods. Too many young Black males place too much value on clothing labels and flashy cars. I want to change that and show them what is really important when it comes to money.” And while many young people don’t have much money to manage, it’s never too early to learn. “Kids learn best at a young age, and they are like sponges,” Nicolas added. “Because we know that kids learn best through experience, we create fun games with financial concepts in our KWIC Money Camp. The kids are having fun and are engaging, while learning.” KWIC teaches kids that money buys you things, not happiness, and uses teleseminars and newsletters to track past participants’ progress after they have attended the camp, Nicolas said. “The money camp taught them how to think about money in a different way,” Dougherty added, while saying that he also learned at an early age that he had to work in order to live the way he wanted to live. “It taught them the difference between wants and needs and how to deal with each of those things in life.” Thirteen-year-old Justin Gaddis learned new strategies for saving money. “I liked the money camp because I learned some new things. I would love to go again,” he said. “I learned about assets and liabilities. Assets give you money, and liabilities take money away.” Israel Hall, 13, who uses money jars to save, also learned the sig-

nificance of having money. “I learned how life works around money,” he said. Dougherty grew up in public housing and now lives in Naperville and is committed to making a difference for today’s youth. “I became involved because I felt that I had an obligation to give back. There were so many programs that I participated in that kept me involved in constructive activities that fed my brain,” he said. “I was reminded that I needed to get involved when I was watching the news and there was this mother crying on TV about her son being murdered and she was saying that ‘somebody has to do something about this.’ I felt that she was talking to me.” GBM pastor Olivia Johnson said she is delighted for all the help that her young church members receive, and she offers debt management and entrepreneurship classes for families. “Our mission is to restore and secure the foundation of the family, and today’s youth are our future leaders of families. Many genuinely speak of the need to do something about our youth today, but there are too many words spoken and not enough actions taken,” she said, adding that her church decided to do something with them rather than just talking about them. “We believe that with spiritual, loving guidance coupled with human resources we can redirect this generation and lead them in a new direction toward love, respect, honor and success; and education is critical to their success. “In order to preserve and secure the future of all, we must teach our youth how to save money rather than spend, and how to

Architect celebrates completion of his first-ever Chapel at Xavier University of Louisiana It would be an understatement to suggest that building a freestanding religious chapel on campus has been an elusive dream for most of Xavier University of Louisiana’s history. A chapel was actually included in (then) Mother Katharine Drexel’s original blueprint plans for the Xavier campus in the late 1920’s and it was mentioned as an upcoming project in nearly every university strategic plan for the past 80+ years. However those plans were always deferred in order to address other essential campus needs such as new classrooms and laboratories, faculty and staff offices, living residences and other student oriented service facilities. But now that dream has finally become a reality. The new St.

Katharine Drexel Chapel will be officially dedicated with a series of activities the week of October 6-12 (schedule below). “The new chapel and its centrality on campus reinforces Xavier’s historic Catholic identity and its continued commitment to the goals and mission established by Saint Katharine, and will welcome students of all faiths to share in their spiritual development,” said XU President Dr. Norman C. Francis. “The St. Katharine Drexel Chapel will be a place where the Xavier community can come together to celebrate the Eucharist, enrich its knowledge of the liturgy, foster religious vocations, attend life-altering retreats, participate in ministries of service, and give time and talent to assist the poor.” Scheduled

Ed Gardner to meet with Evergreen Park mayor and developers By Chinta Strausberg Despite the rumor mill, community leader and business icon Ed Gardner is not holding a march Thursday rather he is meeting with Evergreen Park Mayor James Sexton and representatives from anchors of that massive 95th and Western construction site, Meijer’s and

Menards. Concerned about the misinformation that continues to fill the airwaves, Mayor Rahm Emanuel dispatched one of his top female aides to Mr. Gardner’s home slightly before 8 a.m. so that she would be there when he called Gardner. Keeping his word, the mayor did called Mr. Gardner at 8

a.m. and reportedly assured him he will improve the numbers of Blacks on construction sites. Asked about the Mayor Emanuel calling him, Gardner said, “The mayor had to go to a City Council meeting. He had a lot of things to do, but I told him that I did not think a phone call was the same as a

Architect celebrates completion of . . . (Cont’d from page 15) the Interstate-10 Expressway bringing motorists to and from downtown New Orleans. The chapel, which seats 450, is contemporary in design, yet the sanctuary’s octagonal plan is rooted in traditional religious structures. Raised four feet above the grade, the building is reached by an 80-foot long sloping processional approach. This path is aligned with the original campus quadrangle and the site from which Pope John Paul II spoke in 1987. The design connects with the university’s tradition of building materials and color. Like the other buildings on campus, the chapel’s exterior is made of limestone. Its domed copper roof, which with time will change into a beautiful green color, has a large cross located strategically at its crest that architect Pelli joked “will

be visible from the airport to the river...” adding that “...people will see this cross and know it is the chapel at Xavier University.” Inside, the main sanctuary is 65 feet tall, with a ring of skylights which allows natural light to be diffused through a screen and illuminate the sanctuary. Incorporating sustainable strategies related to lighting, landscaping, and materials, the building is expected to attain LEED certification. A smaller mediation chapel will be used for daily Mass and for individual reflection. The two worship spaces will be served by common liturgical areas including a narthex, work and vesting sacristies, and a reconciliation room. Pelli, whose firm Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects has designed some of the most famous buildings in the world, including the Petronas twin towers in Malaysia that were once the tallest in the

world, expressed excitement at the opportunity to design a house of worship at Xavier. “The idea of constructing a building with spiritual purposes is extremely attractive to me,” said Pelli, who himself grew up in a Catholic family. “This building will embody Drexel’s traits of modesty, simplicity and spirituality. It will make you feel totally uplifted.” About Xavier University of Louisiana is a private, co-educational institution offering a comprehensive liberal arts program and professional programs, including 38 undergraduate majors, five master’s degree programs and a doctor of pharmacy program. meeting and that I want him to come to my home and meet me face-to-face.” “We talked for some time.” Gardner said he wants Emanuel to walk with him on several construction sites. “I want to see what progress has been made.” He said the mayor promised to do a lot of things to improve the lot of Blacks on these numerous work sites, but Gardner made it clear that he did not consider a phone call a meeting. Gardner said. “I asked him to come to my home for a face-to-face meeting.” His top aide said that would happen. In the interim, Mr. Gardner has asked his supporters to be patient and to honor his request to follow his lead. Gard-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Cont’d from page 4)

Brizard is a mistake Dear Editor: As if the city and school district didn’t have enough challenges facing them individually and jointly, I see now some ill-informed individuals or groups want the C.E.O. of the Chicago Public Schools, Jean-Claude Brizard to be removed. I saw this nonsense in an email from the Black Star Project (BSP). Right now it is not important to talk about the dubious nature of the BSP. What is important is to get parents and others to see the foolishness in such a request/move. The BSP folk hang their belief on the notion that “Black boys are being destroyed” under Mr. Brizard’s watch. And this stems from information someone at BSP gathered about Brizard’s tenure as school superinten16

dent in Rochester, N.Y. The highlight of that information is that when Brizard started as Rochester superintendent in 2008 the graduation rate there for Black boys was 33 percent. The BSP web site maintains that three years later the rate fell to 9 percent. The information comes from the Schott Foundation, a leader in educational information and research. In calling for Brizard’s (career) head, the BSP is ignoring some critical facts – facts that clearly say such a move is a mistake. With Brizard being in the Rochester District for three years, all of the graduating classes, except the one during his final year, were in place before his arrival. If anyone is to be blamed for the poor performance of those students it would be Brizard’s predecessor. Had Brizard been there seven years or longer then it makes sense to say he is responsible for the lower graduation rate – if one believes such a statistic rises or falls solely with the Saturday, October 6, 2012

superintendent. I challenge BSP to identify even one superintendent in the country who has turned around a school district, including raising the graduation rate for Black males in three years. BSP also needs to look at all of the other factors affecting graduation before pinning poor results solely on the superintendent. And that organization’s thinking is even more misguided to suggest that in less than a year it is time to replace him. Maybe BSP is

ner, using his business finesse, is quietly working to try and rectify the absence of African American workers on these construction sites including meeting with Sexton who said he is working closely with Mr. Gardner. Referring to Sexton, Gardner said, “He has been very cooperative and wants to see things change.” Gardner said Sexton understands the importance of the black dollar and the business they bring to Evergreen Park, and he wants to be fair about the inclusion of blacks on construction sites while sustaining the black buying power that has helped businesses flourish in Evergreen Park. Gardner is meeting with Sexton Thursday afternoon.

simply trying to be provocative. If so, it is incredibly poor judgment and a disservice to a district that is in a fragile state already. If BSP truly is interested in graduation of Black males, the smart and sensible thing to do is to meet behind closed doors with Brizard, find out how their organization can bolster Black boys’ graduation outcomes and work toward that end. This unfounded public bluster is helping no one – including BSP. Teddy Rogers
