Trump victory met with protests As the White House race ends, a new one begins By Sharon Fountain Before most people woke up to learn the outcome of their vote in the 2016 Presidential Election, plans were already underway to begin a new fight in protest of the election results. The day after the election Hillary Clinton gave her public concession speech in the morning from New York to Donald J. Trump. At times she appeared to be holding back tears as she remarked on the pain of the defeat. In the same speech she asked everyone, especially her supporters to accept the election results and to be openminded, as Trump becomes the next President of the United States. Her speech was followed by Donald’s victory speech from his New York headquarters. Although Donald Trump’s campaign was riddled with racist, sexist, and disparaging remarks and gestures towards numerous groups, his victory speech called for unity as one nation under his leadership. Trump said, “It’s time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me…. It’s a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds and beliefs who want and expect our government to serve the people, and serve the people it will.” The NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks issued the following statement regarding the results of the 2016 presidential election and noted Trump’s pledge: “Even as we extend our congratulations to President-Elect Donald J. Trump, the NAACP, as America’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, must bluntly note that the 2016 campaign has regularized racism, standardized anti-Semitism, de-exceptionalized xenophobia and mainstreamed misogyny. Voter suppression, as the courts have declared, has too become rampant and routine. “From the day that General George Washington accepted the people’s charge to become their first commander-in-chief, to the day that we elected Barack Obama as our country’s first African-American presi-

This most recent presidential election must meet this distinctly American standard. PresidentElect Trump’s victory speech avoided a divisive tone and thus invoked this standard.” Likewise the African American Mayors Association issued statements reminding president-elect Donald Trump of his campaign promise to make new investments in infrastructure. He said that would be one of his top priorities. The statement said,
“Now that the election is over, we must turn our attention to working together to address the most important issues in America – job creation, criminal justice reform, healthcare, a quality education for every child and national security. Importantly, improving our nation’s transportation and infrastructure is equally critical, and it will be a top priority of the African American Mayors Association to work with the new administration to bring American infrastructure into the 21st century.” Despite the remarks by Trump in his vic-

tory speech and calls for solidarity, plans were being made throughout the day all over the United States in every major city to protest the results of the election. Trump’s victory over Democrat and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who won 228 electoral votes to Trump’s 279, did not make him more popular. Hillary won the popular vote, making her the preferred candidate of the people. In particular, plans in Chicago were underway to have no less than 800 protesters to converge on Trump Tower in downtown Chicago to express disapproval of a Trump Presidency in the early evening. The idea was to resist the outcome because Trump’s campaign had been particularly filled with blatant and hateful statements and views towards so many groups. However by nightfall there were hun(Continued on page 3)

Trump’s win overshadows local elections By Glenn Reedus The shocking win that placed reality TV star Donald Trump in the White House come January overshadowed news that Illinois has a new U.S. senator, as well as the unfolding story of a disqualified attorney prevailing in a judge’s race. The contest between former New York Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump stretched into early Wednesday morning before Trump was declared the winner. Trump’s extremely unorthodox campaign style in which he denigrated the handicapped, Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, women, and Black folk had him pegged as a long shot by pundits, political analysts and the news media. However, that approach resonated with legions of white voters, who, in turn, led the first-time candidate to victory. The fact Iraqi war veteran Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (D-8) upended incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk was one of the area’s most highly-contested races got short shrift, locally and nationally. Kirk won President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat in 2010 and was elected to his own full term. Alvin Boutte, Jr., a long-time political operative, said with the exception of the 1st, 2nd and 7th congressional district races, state voting reflected the national picture. Illinois had the same pendulum swing as the nation. American and Illinois voters came out to vote against the establishment all the way down the ballot. Even Susana Mendoza winning Comptroller wasn’t so much about substance, as a vote against the state-wide establishment. I expect her to be a major driver for voter turnout for years to come.” The Chicago area’s contingent of Black U.S. representatives emerged from their campaigns unscathed. Congressman Bobby L. Rush (D-1) has been in Congress since 1993, and historically has beat opponents by an 85 percent margin. This election saw him besting Republican August Deuer with 90 percent of the vote. Rush, a South Side Democrat, is proving to be the Teflon candidate. He was roundly criticized even by some in the party for what was considered excessive absences from his Congressional seat. He attributed that to the fact he was caring for his ailing wife. As pastor of Beloved Community Christian Church, he also has been under federal investigation over allegedly using federal grants to pay his wife, Carolyn, and giving other grant dollars to his church. The U.S. Army veteran has weathered all allegations. U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-7), like Rush, is a former City of Chicago alderman. He has served in Con2

gress continually since 1996. In Tuesday’s election, he also steamrolled his Republican opponent, Jeffrey Leef. With 20 years seniority, Davis is a member of the House’s Ways and Means Committee. The committee writes U.S. tax laws and is a much sought-after appointment by members of Congress. One of Congress’ newest members, Rep. Robin Kelly (D-2) also coasted to a win Tuesday drumming her Republican opponent, John Morrow, by a 79 percent margin. Kelly represents the district once held by Jesse Jackson, Jr. and comprised of much of the city’s South Side and South Suburbs. Patrick Brutus, an opponent of Rush in the 2014 election, said he foresaw a Trump victory because of the size of the crowds at the candidate’s rallies and the overwhelmingly positive response he was receiving adding, “In my opinion, the country, media and pundits failed to factor this component in while evaluating his campaign, which in turn, further energized his campaign as they were seen as insignificant, labeled as ‘deplorables’ and marginalized as only ‘white uneducated’ voters from rural or suburban districts. This was a huge miscalculation and the final polling (Election Day returns) tells us the final verdict. “Unfortunately, the Hillary for America campaign and the DNC did not execute the best strategies necessary to ensure victory.” The last time voters decided to eliminate a county office was 44 years ago. It was 1972 when the Cook County coroner’s office was folded into the office of the medical examiner. On Tuesday, voters backed the referendum to marry the Cook County Recorder of Deeds office and Cook County Clerk’s office. Exactly 63 percent of voters checking in on the issue said the recorder’s duties should be moved to the county clerk. Former West Suburban state representative Karen Yarbrough is currently the Recorder of Deeds and former Chicago mayor David Orr is the Cook County Clerk, The Recorder’s office will remain open until 2020. That is when the ballot issue takes ef-
fect. Yarbrough, who ran unopposed, will continue to serve as Recorder. Since she emerged as the winner in a hotly-contested primary against incumbent Anita Alvarez, Kim Foxx’s victory in Tuesday Cook County State’s Attorney’s race came as no surprise. Foxx, a first-time candidate with a history of county government administrative experience, walloped her Republican opponent Christopher Pfannkuche. With a 79 percent margin, Foxx’s compelling biography of growing up in Cabrini Green housing project with a single, teenage mother, propelled her to victory in the primary, and by the general election, she was familiar to a host of voters. Foxx said the outcome of the presidential race “was not one I was expecting. I feel that many people, myself included, feel deeply wounded because the rhetoric of the Republi-
chuckled. She attributed the huge turnout of more than one million voters to the fact “people here—even though we were not a battleground state— knew what was at stake, and they were fired up.” Jim Allen, communications director for the Chicago Board of Elections, said all absentee and provisional ballots are counted; the total percentage could be as high as 70 percent. There are 1,570,529 registered voters in Chicago. Approximately 500,000 fewer votes were cast in the 2012 presidential election. Ameshia Cross, manager of government affairs for Noble Charter Schools opined. “There were no big surprises locally. In Chicago, after the Laquan McDonald shooting and the questions circling a cover-up, the path was paved for Kim Foxx to be Cook County State’s Attorney, and everyone knew Susana Mendoza would

can candidate during the campaign.” She noted his repeated mentions of Chicago’s current violence was something Trump harped on and Chicagoans resented the only mentions about the city were associated with violence. She added she is hopeful that the candidate “will conduct himself differently as president.” Despite her overwhelming victory against Alvarez, Foxx reiterated a campaign theme that she didn’t take anything for granted. “One surprise I didn’t want was to not be elected,” Foxx
take the Comptroller seat.” Cross, the former policy analyst for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle added, “At the federal level, however, Donald Trump becoming president via a sea of misogynistic commentary, racist rhetoric and ‘othering’ multiple groups of people the results of this election were resounding. “Trump spoke to the dark underbelly of this nation and uncovered its wounds. Hillary Clinton simply did not resonate, losing the majority of swing states that Obama won in
2008. The Obama coalition did not support her or come out in large numbers. It’s a devastating blow to American democracy to have someone who holds the ideas that Trump does leading the country and representing us in a global society. But this election has taught me something... our country is a long way from being united. Those rifts exist across parties. Our separation as a people drove Trump to victory and it will drive us into despair.” Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown, who, like Rush, faced several skirmishes in the past year, emerged victorious Tuesday. Brown initially received the endorsement from the Cook County Democratic Party, however it was later withdrawn. Brown took her campaign to the people and defeated the party’s nominee Alderman Michele Harris and Democrat Jacob Meister. Her next victory came with the withdrawal of a controversial resolution by Cook County Commissioner Peter N. Silvestri (9th) that sought to have the Clerk of the Circuit Court position changed from an elected position to appointed. What undoubtedly will prove to be one of the most bizarre election stories involves a woman winning an elected as judge, although her law license is suspended and making her ineligible to serve. Rhonda Crawford, a law clerk, remained on Tuesday’s ballot despite having her law license suspended by state bar officials because Crawford posed as judge in traffic court and apparently ruled on some cases in a Dolton courtroom. Crawford’s defense was she was “shadowing” Circuit Judge Valerie Turner. It was Turner’s robe Crawford wore on the bench. Even though the state supreme court ruled that if elected Crawford could not serve, her name remained on the ballot for the 1st Sub-circuit post.

Tim Black shares highlights to African-American political involvement By Glenn Reedus Two decades before Americans began to recognize December 7 as Pearl Harbor Day it was Timuel Black’s birthday. None of the descriptions used to define Black do justice to his near 98 years on this planet. Over the decades Black, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, has been described as a socialist, historian, political activist, professor, author, and social worker, among other titles. Black will use his unique perspective to deliver a speech titled “Roles and Impact of African Americans in Chicago Politics,” at the Chicago Urban League’s IMPACT Leadership Development Program. IMPACT Leadership Development prepares mid-career African-American professionals in holding higher leadership positions in their careers. There is no more authoritative voice than Black’s to inform this year’s fellows and audience about the obstacles to achievement in Black Chicago. He is viewed as one of the key influencers in getting the late Mayor Harold Washington to successfully run making him the city’s first African-American mayor, and because of his work in Chicago’s civil rights and labor communities, he was tapped by A. Phillip Randolph to coordinate the Illinois delegation for the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Justice. This was the march that introduced the world to the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Black, however had met Dr,. King several years earlier when Black flew to Birmingham, Ala., after watching a television show that featured Dr. King speaking. It was 1956 when Dr. King accepted Black’s invitation to speak at the University of Chicago. The turnout was so large the venue was changed to a larger facility on campus. Black said “even the Rockefeller Chapel proved to be too small.” Black told the Crusader like so many others he was surprised at the outcome of Tuesday’s presidential race. He then spoke of the early years of Black political influence in Chicago. He noted that the forced confinement of Black people to what was described as the Black Belt forged opportunities to elect Black politicians such as Oscar DePriest, the city’s first African-American alderman and Congressman William L. Dawson. That confinement, according to Black, spurred the development of what Black described as “parallel institutions.” He noted that being contained in an area bounded by 26th Street to the Rock Island Railroad tracks (currently the Dan Ryan Expressway) www.chicagocrusader.com
to 39th Street to the west side of Cottage Grove Avenue, fueled the desire for Blacks to operate successful insurance companies, banks, religious institutions, and social and cultural outlets. He added there was a strong unity among the people in the Black Belt and that culminated in Black candidates being elected to a variety of local governmental offices. He explained DePriest migrated from Florence, Ala. shortly before the first great migration at the end of WWI. In running for office he was able to appeal to people who were leaving the South for three primary reasons, according to Black. They were escaping from the violence fostered by the Ku Klux Klan and similar organizations, as well as being able to find work here, and provide their children with better educational opportunities, according to Black. Black noted the African-American politicians in the DePriest and Dawson eras endured the double challenge of racism and delivering for their respective constituency. He explained “in those early days the Black migrants proportionately outvoted their European counterparts. “Blacks voted heavily. Blacks voted very heavily....that was part of the political culture. “They had the numbers to not only elect local politicians, they would also be able to threaten and demand from the mayor and the governor things that they
needed. “We had a theme - ‘we put you in we can take you out’-and that went beyond the aldermanic level. Because of that concentration, the wealth of the Black Belt was cumulative. There were businesses that Blacks owned, including banks, insurance companies and others. We had another saying ‘don’t spend your money where you can’t work’.” He clarified the population density in the Black Belt with an estimate that the neighboring white Hyde Park/Kenwood community had a population of approximately 27,000, while in the same amount of space in the Black Belt, the population was about 80,000. The power base eroded as Black soldiers returned from the war, including Black, and demanded that housing be made available to them outside of the Black Belt. He noted that ultimately the remaining housing and the highrise projects built in the 1960s became home for less-skilled, and poorly educated African Americans. The lack of education and skills resulted in technology replacing many jobs people had left the South to take. A DuSable High School graduate and classmate of Nat King Cole and Johnson Publishing Company founder, John H. Johnson, Black noted his presentation at IMPACT was keeping in line with his mission these days, I am trying to help people in your gen-

As they headed towards Upper Wacker Drive, a growing crowd near the Trump Tower joined them. The protesters quickly reached several thousands in number. Some carried signs, some chanted, but all wanted to send a clear message to the president-elect. The protesters were not pleased with the outcome “I couldn’t believe it when I woke up this morning. I was outraged. Clearly there is something wrong with our electoral system. But what’s worse—what does this say about the hate in the United States?” one woman said, “so we want to come together to change that and make sure we keep going forward,” said a male protester. It should be no surprise that groups representing immigrants, Muslims, women, LGBTQ people, the poor, disabled and working people, as well as civil right activists, were all present.

VETERAN’S DAY AND RIGHTEOUS WARS The following information about Veterans Day comes from Wikipedia: Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. The foregoing explains Veterans’ Day’s origins. It is certain that we are grateful for the service of our warriors whose ultimate goal is to keep us safe from our external enemies. For example, those who were against the Confederate states were grateful for the success of the Union Army, and Americans are certainly grateful for the Allies’ victories during World War II. Things seem to have changed, however, when the United States started participating in wars started for suspicious reasons. One of the first wars of this type was the Viet Nam war, which drew quite a bit of opposition in the United States. Another war of dubious origins was the first Gulf War, wherein people broadly believed that the war was fought for Middle Eastern oil. The second Gulf War was also questionable. The other wars since then, Afghanistan, and the wars with drone strikes killing people overseas every day are building up a wall of distrust and disrespect for the United States. These are not popular wars; they are not being fought to “protect Americans.” There are ulterior motives connected with them, or at least, this is what a lot of people believe. Many foreign civilians are getting caught up in the crossfire and killed, and news comes from abroad that our soldiers are behaving badly. All of this paints a different picture of what it means to be a soldier, and by extension, how veterans will be perceived. If soldiers are marching off to war for imperialistic and/or capitalistic motives, it does not translate into warm fuzzy feelings back home. And the sad fact of the matter is that many of our young citizens join the armed services for the purpose of serving their country, and when they do not understand their country’s motives, they may sacrifice life and limb for questionable reasons. Many African Americans sign up for the military because of the educational and career opportunities that are often available as a result. This is understandable; yet it is no secret that Black people have served in every war since this country’s inception and though this is the case, opportunities for advancement have often been withheld. During World Wars I and II Blacks served overseas and came back home to face Jim Crow and deprivation. Viet Nam war veterans have ended up homeless and forgotten. Today, Blacks who serve in our various skirmishes around the globe stand to come back to the states and be killed by the police. Moreover, there is a war going on here at home. The Donald Trump candidacy has brought the crazies out of the woodwork, and this does not bode well for the future of our country. Bigotry, and unbridled hatred have assumed a level of legitimacy reminiscent of that which could be expected during slavery days. Our veterans are subjected to this chaos. Ultimately, we understand the need to honor those who have chosen to fight for America, but we must be sure that the fights are RIGHTEOUS ones. It has been considered noble from time immemorial for brave soldiers to protect the rest of us. But when the service is connected with wars of aggression and imperialism, it is questionable as to how much honor our veterans will be due when they return. Hopefully, the day will come when there is no more need to celebrate a Veteran’s Day, because we will have moved beyond a culture of war. But until that time comes, if ever, we gladly salute those veterans among us who have served this country honorably for the right reasons. A luta continua.
After the Cubs won the World Series last week some sports pundits said Chicagoans will have something to talk about until next spring training. The way tongues are still wagging about the championship, that guy might be right. I think we all know that not every Chicago baseball fan is a Cubs fan. I was surprised though to see how divided Chicagoans are about supporting the White Sox or Cubs. I would have never guessed that so many people who are Sox fans said in no way could they cheer on the Cubs. An even bigger surprise was to hear how many Black people called the Cubs a white person’s team. They mentioned the fact that the Sox had a Black player before the Cubs. For a lot of them, the fact that the first game someone took them to was a White Sox game seemed to cement a connection with that team forever. I have no idea if the Yankees and Mets or the Dodgers and Angels have such division in New York and Los Angeles respectively, but it seems weird for Chicago to take such sides. There didn’t seem to be a lot of people who just like the game of baseball who were offering opinions. Folks want you on one side or

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Not everyone is praising the Cubs Dear Editor:
the other. This was the first time I have seen people being accused of not caring because they chose to celebrate for a day or two vs march or demonstrate over some cause. Sure, there have been some society changing moments that occurred within baseball, but society has not changed because of it. The other mind-boggling fact about the Cubs is the city claimed 5 million people showed up for the parade to celebrate the victory. I am one of those who is very skeptical of that number. I am skeptical because of the claims the mayor was making before the parade/celebration took that “this will be one for all times.” It says to me that City Hall had a number in mind before one person set foot in Grant Park. Regardless of that, the number of people attending the celebration was a huge one. It makes one wonder with so many people dissing the Cubs why hundreds of thousands or maybe a couple of million took off work to show up. Many of the people griping about the Cubs I guess are really closet fans who didn’t want to be associated at every juncture. Of course this season would not have been so great if Cleveland had come out as the World Series champions. I think what everybody needs to keep in mind is that baseball is a game, it is a respite. It is not, and has never been intended to address social ills or, be something beneficial to just one part of a city. I am one of those who is very, very
happy to root for the Cubs and celebrate their history-making season. Rooting for them or against them doesn’t change the quality of my life, and I doubt if it is doing anything one way or the other for the detractors. Sammie Talbot

Our Return to Cuba Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford What a difference sixteen years can make! When the National Black Chamber of Commerce first visited Cuba, in 2000, it was a very awkward process. First we had to fill out a lengthy application and submit it to our Treasury Department. After three months, they would send a bunch of questions and that would take another three months before the process was completed. There were few hotels where you could stay. Our travel agent would subcontract his services to a Cuban government approved agency. You could tell that both the United States and the Cuba governments were at all times watching us for separate reasons. The only planes you could travel with were charters. That will be the last time we go through that. Beginning December 7, 2016 (announced after we set our trip) U.S. airlines can now book flights to nine Cuban cities, including Cayo Largo, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Santiago de Cuba and, yes, Havana, the capital and vibrant city. Reliable and reasonable airlines such as American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines will all offer flights to Cuba. Soon you will be able to fly direct to Cuba from Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Chicago, Philadelphia
and Minneapolis – St. Paul. This is going to revolutionize a plane trip to Cuba. Right now, you must go through Miami and the outbound process is controlled by Cuban officials. It is indeed Third World. It takes 3 – 4 hours to get on board the plane and take off. Returning is much faster but still at least 2 hours. They rip you off with “overweight baggage.” When you challenge the fee, you will get the cost down by at least 50%. Stand your ground! It is a non-receipt hustle right in a major U.S. airport. Getting around Havana is easy. There are cabs (classics or modern taxis). If you are going as a group, tour buses can be arranged. The tour buses are expensive. The individual cabs have no meters. You can go to one destination for, let’s say, $8 but returning back to the same place may cost $5 from a different cab. The medical delivery system in Cuba is one of the best in the world. They have cured sickle cell anemia and recently have found a cure for lung cancer. The service is free for Cuban citizens. Everyone looks quite healthy as compared to United States citizens. I predict that soon they will offer medical services to U.S. citizens at very affordable rates like Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The life spans of Blacks are significantly longer in Cuba compared to the United States. Now here is the very significant
Harry C. Alford big change. Cuba is open for business! When we went there in 2000 there was no way we could trade with the Cubans on a commercial basis. That is all gone now and we can partner, joint venture and contract with Cuba businesses. One of the biggest acts of entrepreneurship in Cuba is temporary housing. People are now allowed to convert their homes or property into hostels (licensed by the Cuban government). In fact you can shop for temporary housing on Airbnb.com. The price difference is immense. We rented an “official residence” (bedroom, private bath and joint living room and kitchen) for
$39 per night. It was excellent and homey as compared to a busy hotel that could cost anywhere from $600 - $1,500 per night. Many of us broke up in small groups and participated in this savings as well as hung out around our temporary “neighborhood.” Most set ups like this offer free home cooked breakfasts for the guests. Walking down the street is safe and big fun speaking to the residents. The government closely watches the landlord as they personally come and tax them for the guest rentals once a week. Over all it is a good source of fresh income for the home owners and a new steady tax base for the government. At the end of the trip we hugged and said farewell to our new friends. Havana hotels were like any city in America – check in and check out on the required dates. Temperatures were a little warmer than Miami. Landscapes were typically Caribbean and the streets were kept tidy. There were no signs of slums and dangerous neighborhoods. The Cuban people are happy replete with pleasant smiles. We visited a very large Cuba Trade Exhibition. It was magnificent. It was their fourth annual event with acres and acres of pavilions. There were more than 4,500 exhibits with corporations from around the world. Capitalism was certainly alive! We look forward to attending next year. All we must do is buy a plane ticket (typical fair to the
Caribbean, carry our visa and book an “official residence” through Airbnb.com or other online site and off we go to Cuba! It is simple now. Go online, who needs a travel agent. You must, however, fall into 1 of 12 categories of traveler as per U.S. State Department. Our crew of 43 had no dietary illness and no major complaints. New York AG and CFPB join forces to fight illegal national debt collection scheme By Charlene Crowell A new federal lawsuit alleges that since at least 2009, two major players in the debt collection industry have illegally operated, harassed, threatened and deceived millions of consumers across the country – often for debts that were either inflated or not even owed. The scheme based in Buffalo, New York, also netted tens of millions of dollars in revenue each year. The case seeks to shut down the illegal scheme, secure compensation for victims and assess civil penalties against the companies and its partners. On November 2, New York’s Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Richard Cordray, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, filed charges against the scheme’s two principals, Douglas MacKinnon and Mark Gray. “[W]e are taking action against the ringleaders of this operation,” noted Director Cordray, “so they can no longer prey upon vulnerable consumers.” “Living with debt is difficult enough, without the added stress of being harassed and threatened by debt collectors,” Attorney General www.chicagocrusader.coM
Schneiderman said. “These collection shops inflated debts, threatened victims and deceived them out of millions. This suit sends the message that debt collectors that employ abusive tactics will be held accountable.” In recent years, debt collection abuses have emerged as a growing consumer finance issue for communities of color. Both research and investigative news have found that consumers of color, along with low and middle-income communities are frequently targets of collection lawsuits that today represent a stillgrowing $13 billion industry. According to the lawsuit, MacKinnon and Gray operate a network of at least 60 fly-by-night collection shops to collect on large debt portfolios purchased by three interrelated firms: Northern Resolution Group, Enhanced Acquisitions and Delray Capital, all based in Buffalo, New York. MacKinnon and Gray created, operated and oversaw the illegal operation. Among the actions cited as illegal violations included: • Falsely threatening legal action; • Impersonating law enforcement officials, government agencies and
court officers; and • Inflating consumer debts and misrepresentations of amounts consumers owed. These kinds of actions violate both the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Enacted in 1978, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act protects consumers from abusive or deceptive fraud in debt collection practices. It applies only to the collection of debt incurred by a consumer primarily for personal, family, or household purposes. Two of its most important provisions are that a debt collector cannot phone a consumer’s residence before 8:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m.; nor attempt to contact a consumer at their place of employment. Similarly, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act specifically bans unfair and deceptive acts or practices in the consumer financial marketplace in a variety of lending areas that include mortgages, student loans, debt collection and others. Last year, CFPB returned $360 million to consumers wronged by
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
Charlene Crowell unlawful debt collection practices and collected over $79 million in fines. In addition, the Federal Trade Commission separately received approximately 900,000 consumer complaints on debt collection. In recent comments to the CFPB, the Center for Responsible Lending advised, “CRL strongly
supports the concept that a debt collector must possess a reasonable basis for making a claim that an individual owes a debt . . . . The burden rightfully should be on debt collectors to establish that they have the legal right to collect the debts and are collecting from the right people, for the right amount of money.” For Lisa Stifler, CRL’s deputy director of state policy, the joint action taken by New York’s Attorney General and CFPB is representative of what should happen more often to better protect all consumers. “Consumers need the protection of both state officials and CFPB to rid the marketplace of bad actors and illegal debt collection practices. It’s an encouraging sign that one of our most populous states is working in concert with CFPB to end financial abuse. It’s an example worth emulating by other states.” Charlene Crowell is the communications deputy director with the Center for Responsible Lending. THE AMERICAN DYNAMIC AND NATIONALISM Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. fight for self-determination and dignity, it is important that we remind ourselves of the nature of the American dynamic. Essentially, and at the foundation of the American-European dynamic, is the fact that it is made up of many nations who migrated to this country and continued to fight for and develop their national interests, inside this country. At the same time they maintained their economic, political, cultural, linguistic, and social relationships with their country of origin. We can witness this phenomenon on a daily basis by just taking a quick glance at the national/ethnic group practices and beliefs of the Jews, Poles, Irish, Italians, Germans, Swedes, Greeks, French, Slovakians, Czechs, etc., and how they have consolidated their political and economic power in America. They have all done this through their nationalistic unity on the fundamental life giving and life sustaining issues that affect their interests. In other words, they have maintained a strong sense of where they came from, who they are, and where Dr. Conrad Worrill they are going. This formula has In order for the African Commu- been at the heart of their historical nity in America to continue our efforts to acquire power in America.
We can observe this same trend among the Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Jordanians, and Palestinians who are the new national/ethnic groups of America. In fact, the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and other Spanishspeaking national/ethnic groups are following this same pattern. They are fighting for nationalism in America, without calling it that. When African people in America talk about nationalism, we are often charged with being racists or antiwhite. However, the historical record demonstrates clearly that nationalism has been the primary method by which every national/ethnic group has achieved and maintains power. Harold Cruse describes this dilemma of the African Community in America, in his most profound analysis of our movement, in his book “The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual.” Cruse framed the American dynamic in this manner when he said, “On the face of it, this dilemma rests on the fact that America, which idealizes the rights of the individual above everything else, in reality, a nation dominated by the social powers of groups,
classes, in-groups and cliques both ethnic and religious.” He goes further to explain, “The individual in America has few rights that are not backed up by the political, economic and social power of one group or another.” Therefore, Cruse states, “…the individual [Black person] has, proportionately, very few rights indeed because his ethnic group (whether or not he actually identifies with it) has very little political, economic or social power (beyond moral grounds) to wield.” In our efforts to acquire Black Power, we should remind ourselves that the Black Nationalist Tradition has always been opposed to integration, assimilation, and accommodation as a solution to the problems of people of African ancestry in America. In this regard, the Black Nationalist Tradition has rejected the strategies and tactics of appealing to the morality of white people and their white supremacy system. Black Nationalists have been historically clear that people in power do not teach powerless people how to get power. And they certainly do not give power away, even though, when challenged, they may make
some concessions. It is so clear that every national/ethnic group understands their political, economic, and cultural interest. It is so natural for them to function in a nationalistic manner in their struggle to acquire and maintain power. The African Community in America has not fully conceptualized and reached a consensus on our nationalistic agenda. Many of us function as if we are scared of really acting out what we really know, for fear of being called racist. We need to stop denying our own reality. Being called racist because we believe in, and will fight for, the interests of our race with undying loyalty should become the most honorable badge of courage in our community. We should get off of this defensive “trip” when we fight for the interests of our race and some other national/ethnic group calls us racist. We should know by now, this is a tactic to sway us away from the path of acquiring power. Let’s continue our movement “to assert our own identity, define our own purpose, to make and enforce decisions and to move into our own national interest.” It is called nationalism!
RACE, GENDER AND HEALING By Julianne Malveaux Just a few days before the corrosive 2016 election, it occurs to me that no matter what the outcome, our social fabric has been shredded by the ugliness of this campaign. Sure, there have been ugly campaigns before, but this one has revealed the extent to which racism and sexism are acceptable features of life in these United States. Women, including Hillary Clinton, have been routinely disparaged, not only in politics, but also in their roles as television talking heads and anchors. While I’m not weeping for Megyn Kelley (she’s a big girl, and she can take care of herself), her on-air collision with Newt Gingrich was classic, with a jowly male bully loudly talking over a television host and accusing her of being “obsessed” with sex. And the disparagement of women flowed down the ticket – in Illinois, Senator Mark Kirk had the nerve to disparage challenger Tammy Duckworth because of her Thai heritage. Her dad traces his family’s military service back to the eighteenth century, while her Mom is from Thailand. When she cited her military background, Kirk nastily said he 6
was unaware that her family had come all the way from Thailand to fight for the US. Shame on Kirk for demonstrating his ignorance by criticizing the military service of a woman who lost both her legs in the Iraq war. All’s fair, they say, in love and war, and many see politics as a special kind of war. And certainly, those women who play the politics game have to have thick skins and broad shoulders because men are not likely to treat women with kid gloves because of their gender. However, gendered criticism (she lacks stamina, look at that face) is woven into the fabric of our nation’s racist patriarchy, and the “other” (women, people of color) is often put down using gendered or racialized code words. In some cases, as with Tammy Duckworth, people don’t even bother to use code words. The backlash from eight years of the Obama Presidency means that plenty of racists have come out to play. I thought we’d seen the last of David Duke, the reported KKK member who is again running for the Senate from Louisiana. Instead, he seems to have slithered from under some rock, just in time to endorse Donald Trump, throw shade on Evan McMullin
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2016
Dr. Julianne Malveaux (the Utah native and former CIA operative who is running a longshot campaign for President), and attack Jewish people. Most listeners recoiled from Duke’s hateful words, and the Trump campaign quickly distanced itself from the Duke endorsement. Shocking, though, that this level of racist hate is so openly articulated. And Mr. Trump’s racial rhetoric suggests that the Duke endorsement, if unwelcome, was at least somewhat consistent with that which Mr. Trump has been preaching. The use of terms like “law and order” or “stop and frisk” ignores
the issues the Black Lives Matter Movement has raised, not the least of which is the police killings of young Black people. And the Black Lives Matter Movement has been routinely disparaged during this 2016 campaign. The disparagement of the Black Lives Matter Movement really disparages all Black people and reminds us that, despite progress, race still matters. If racism and sexism are woven into the fabric of our nation, how do we pull those threads out without ruining the fabric? Or has the fabric already been so fully shredded that we have the opportunity to “start over.” Actually, there will be no starting over. Our economic structure and the credo of predatory capitalism depend on the ability of capitalists to extract surplus value from the work of those that are “other.” Capitalists maximize profits by minimizing expenses. Thus enslavement, though an inhumane institution, was also an efficient one for those who were able to use free labor. We’ve come a long way from enslavement, but the exploitation of
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
workers continues, which is why the “Fight for $15,” which will disproportionately benefit women and people of color, is so important. This 2016 election has put many of our national wounds, and much of our fractured history, on display. Is there healing after all of this divisiveness? Washington gridlock isn’t likely to stop just because the election is over. Still, there must be leaders who are willing to talk solutions. When does our nation finally confront race and talk about reparatory justice? When do we, culturally, talk about sexism and the pay gap that remains, despite women’s progress? Or will we continue to limp along, wounds exposed, the fabric so frayed that it can’t be stitched back together? Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? Race, Obama and Public Policy” is available via www.amazon.com for booking, wholesale inquiries or for more info visit www.juliannemalveaux.com.

TELL ME IT AI’NT SO!!! Lawdy I tied one on last night and I thought I heard that Ol’ Crazy Donald Trump was the President-elect!! I asked Killer if he heard the same thang and he said he did!! Now these candidates dese days hire all of these young white computer experts that don’t know heads or tails about politics and folks. Dey show nuff don’t know anything about Black folks. Then it came back to me. Yu see Killer and I was watching the election returns on CNN and Donald Trump started out in the lead and I wasn’t worried, the returns were just beginning to come in and then I saw that Trump was leading and still I wasn’t worried cause Hillary was still in play, but when I saw how Trump was leading in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio then I began to worry. When Ohio and North Carolina was declared for Trump I knew we were in trouble. When Hillary was leading in Pennsylvania and they did not declare her the winner there I thought things would change if I had a little more white lightnin’ to wake up in time to hear dem broadcasters fussing that Hillary would not make her conceding speech Tuesday night. I woke up long enough to hear Trump talking something I could not understand, something about unity and then I heard him call out the names of his two Black surrogates Dr. Ben Carson and Omarosa. What a nightmare!! -Ima-
square in the primary and usually after the primary the party gets behind the winners. But NOOOOO, not in this case and believe me they are going to pay for it. Now dey are trying to make her office an appointed one, not elected, as well as they are trying to eliminate the Recorder of Deeds office now held by Karen Yarbrough. Now all of a sudden this office ain’t needed. Madigan won the tiff with the Gubner for State Comptroller. Mendoza, who was said to be backed by Madigan won handily over Munger who was being carried around as if they were a queen maker by one of our local Black newspaper publishers. What they failed to realize is that Munger wasn’t no Judy Barr Topinka and that their little Black History awardees aka Topinka were takers, not workers or givers. Even that mixer at Parkway Ballroom last week didn’t help, but maybe Mr. Higginbottom took something off of that delinquent rent they owe.
-ImaLOCAL POLITRICKS The Democratic party is in a shambles nationally and wait a minute they ain’t much better locally. The dirty things dey did to Dorothy Brown ain’t been satisfied yet. Did yu notice that the sample ballot did not list her race at all. She beat them fair and

term he still didn’t do nothing for us. So his legacy be damn!!! I am sorry that she did not win and Black folks had been the margin and could have pulled out Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan and some other states but they did get any energy from the Clinton camp. Now what we did wrong and the white uneducated Blue Collar workers did right was to go to the polls and VOTE for their candidate, no matter how crazy he was. I guess they thought that he might just be crazy enough to bring about change. NOBODY thought he would even be in the race in the first place. Ima will write more about this later so keep tuned!!!
would be something for them. He failed our Black colleges, our institutions, dey ignored the Black Press, they raised and spent hundreds of millions of dollars and spent it with everybody but the Black newspapers. They showed so much disdain for the Black newspapers that they only had half-page black and white ads. They didn’t even deserve to be printed in color. Obama started that in 2008. He was selective in the conventions he attended. He went to the NAACP and the Urban League conventions. He invited his special Negroes to the White House who didn’t ask for anything except something for themselves like a TV show and stuff lik that. Nobody wanted to show up our first “Black” President so we didn’t say much about it. Except Valerie Jarrett knew and she didn’t give a d… . So most Black folks thought his hands were tied his first term, and was looking forward to him being re-elected his second term and Blacks voted for him each time more than 90%. What Hillary’s folk didn’t understand those votes would not automatically transfer to her. What she obviously refused to understand was that his “legacy” being preserved didn’t mean much to folks whose unemployment was still high, and his Obama Care was needed more than ever when we didn’t get much of anything he thought was his legacy. Obama Care was a necessity and needed to treat the ulcers, heart attacks, diabetes and high blood pressure and other illnesses associated with poverty we suffered. Then the second

“Escape from Nigeria: A Memoir of Faith, Love and War” at Park Forest Library By Taryn Galbreath Starvation, diseases, and genocidal massacres claimed the lives of millions during the Nigerian-Biafran War. Yet one young mother, with six small children, survived through a series of miracles, to reunite in the U.S. with a husband who for more than three years did not know if his family was alive or dead. “It was like a dream, but then it was true. When Nigeria brought the war to Biafra, they were bombing us everyday. My husband had been studying in the U.S. when the war broke out, severing all outside communication,” Mrs. Angelina Ihejirika, 89-year-old mother of veteran Chicago Sun-Times reporter Maudlyne Ihejirika, says in an interview 50 years later. “Every morning I would first of all get the children, and put them in the bunker that I dug, then go in search of food. I didn’t know how long we were going to live.” Mrs. Ihejirika’s harrowing tale of surviving the brutal war that claimed the lives of at least two million Biafrans — a war ranked fifth on the list of the worst crimes against humanity of the 20th century — is recounted in her daughter’s recently published first book, “Escape From Nigeria: A Memoir of Faith, Love and War.”

Spotlight: Pennie’s Tea Local tea artisan selected as a supplier for Englewood Whole Foods Local artisan tea brand Pennie’s Tea was among the local vendors selected by the new Englewood Whole Foods. The Englewood store made news not only for its location in a predominately Black neighborhood, where fresh grocery store chains are scarce, but also for the fact that it selected 35 local products and suppliers. Local tea artisan LaShonda Crockett, founder of Pennie’s Tea, is grateful for the opportunity with Whole Foods and excited that the store will propel her tasty loose teas into the spotlight and generate new customers. “It is over-themoon exciting to see my brand and products, that I have so much heart for, finally make it to the shelves in a major retailer like Whole Foods,” says LaShonda. “It’s so surreal to see my picture on the store banners. All I keep thinking is, ‘Wow, I did this!’” Pennie’s Tea offers five flavors at the Englewood Whole Foods store – Ginger Peach Blast, Island Berry, Tropical Bliss, English Breakfast and Strawberry Kisses. Pennie’s Tea curates the finest teas with the freshest ingredients for robust and exotic tastes while maximizing antioxidants and other health benefits. Each blend of Pennie’s Tea is hand-crafted. Pennie’s Tea promotes healthy choices for an abundant life so tea drinkers can spend time on things that make them happy and healthy.
LaShonda Crockett LaShonda is a Chicago native with a Master of Health Adminis-
tration degree. She is also a Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified
Massage Therapist, and a Certified Colon Therapist. A few years ago, LaShonda was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). She tried several overthe-counter products that did not alleviate her symptoms. This prompted LaShonda to use her professional expertise to blend detox teas that would help with her IBS. Her tea blend was so successful that soon she had repeat requests from a small customer base of friends and family. LaShonda decided to launch her signature product, the Wellness Tea. After the success of the Wellness Tea, LaShonda went to school to learn more about teas, blending techniques, and how to use wholesome ingredients. LaShonda became a Tea Master and began custom blending teas. Shortly after, Pennie’s Tea was born. LaShonda has a passion for flavorful, healthy teas, as well as a desire to be socially responsible and of service to the community – one sip at a time. The partnership between Pennie’s Tea and Whole Foods is an ideal match. “Today we are doing much more than opening the doors to a new Whole Foods. We are opening doors to a new future for the Englewood community,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said at the opening ceremonies. “This store is also putting products from dozens of local suppliers on its shelves, helping turn small businesses into
big businesses and creating even more economic opportunities that reach across Chicago.” The 18,000-square-foot Englewood store located at 63rd and Halsted streets is the 27th Whole Foods store in the Chicagoland area. The Greater Englewood Community Development Corporation confirmed that a Whole Foods Demonstration Kitchen would be opening across the street. One Englewood resident said: "I feel great because I am a Whole Foods shopper. I'm into health. I think it's a wonderful thing.” Another resident said: "I never in a million years thought Whole Foods – of all places – would be in Englewood. This is a shot of pride in the arm for our community." RTA to host 19th Annual Transportation Vendor Symposium and Business Exchange The RTA, in collaboration with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, Pace, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Tollway, is proud to host the 19th Annual Transportation Symposium and Business Exchange. The event will be held on Tuesday, November 15th at the Chicago Cultural Center, Sidney R. Yates Gallery, 78 East Washington Street in Chicago from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for businesses interested in working with local transportation agencies. There is no cost to attend the event. “Transit agencies in this region spend billions of dollars annually on goods and services needed to help keep our transportation system moving,” says RTA Executive Director Leanne Redden. “We are
fortunate to work with a variety of businesses every year and see this symposium and business exchange as an opportunity to grow our network of vendors.” The event is specifically aimed at transit-related businesses including construction companies, professional service firms, manufacturers, architects/engineers and suppliers. Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs), Minority-Owned Business Enterprises (MBEs), Women-Owned Business Enterprises (WBEs), VeteranOwned Small Business (VOSB) and Small Business Enterprises (SBEs) are strongly encouraged to attend to obtain valuable information regarding the best way to seek transit agency contracts. “I know firsthand how helpful this event is,” says George Kinnison,

president, and founder of Trinity Technology Services and scheduled event speaker. “I first attended the event 17 years ago and learned a great deal about the processes in place for MBE and DBE certified companies to become vendors in the transit and transportation sectors. Since then, I founded Trinity and, as a DBE, we now provide low voltage bus systems, such as GPS and communications systems, to CTA buses. The information I gained at this event helped make this work possible.” Advance registration for the event is strongly encouraged. Mount Carmel celebrates completion of $3.5 million renovation Mount Carmel celebrated the completion of a $3.5 million renovation to its third floor and infrastructure this week with a ribbon cutting ceremony. This phase of the renovation is part of a $15 million capital campaign to improve the main school building, originally constructed in 1924. Members of the Mount Carmel community joined the Caravan for a blessing of the third floor by former Mount Carmel President and Principal, Fr. David Dillon (O. Carm. ’57), a classroom demonstration with teacher Antonio Mota’s 2001 Spanish class, and a luncheon. President Ned Hughes (Class of ’70) spoke to the guests and explained the impact these renovations have on Mount Carmel students, “The opportunity to expand learning is truly endless now at Mount Carmel and you have enabled us and every future student of this school to maximize his learning potential.” The renovations included a complete 10
gut of the third floor, installation of TV screens and a projector in each classroom, writable walls, moveable furniture, and new electrical, HVAC, and water infrastructure throughout the building. Students will begin using the classrooms next week. Campus renovations began in 2014 with the renovated exterior and installation of energy efficient windows and coverings. It continued in 2015 with the removal and replacement of the boiler system, improved wireless Internet capabilities and construction of a model classroom which was used to test-drive technology in preparation for future classroom renovations. Mount Carmel will continue to renovate the remaining classrooms over the next two years, equipping each with integrated technology, writable walls, and moveable furniture. Also planned is a new fine arts center, design and build lab, art studios, and a center for learning and technology. The classroom construction coincides

Saint Sabina’s 100th anniversary sold out at 1,000 Yolanda Adams rocked the house By Chinta Strausberg More than 1,000 people packed the Hyatt Regency Hotel on October 29 celebrating The Faith Community of Saint Sabina’s 100th anniversary—“A century of Discipleship: From Storefront to the World”—a church that sits on “Holy Ground.” Senior Pastor Father Michael L. Pfleger and Rev. (Pastor) Thulani D. Magwaza were so proud of the
Yolanda Adams turnout. “We sold out at 1,000,” Pfleger boasted very pleased at the number of people who showed their support. The evening was peppered with welcoming words from Father Pfleger and Windy City Live cohost Val Warner, but it was the entertainment that shaped the atmosphere and had the audience clapping and literally dancing in the aisles. Saint Sabina’s children’s Selah Choir, directed by Sam Williams, received a standing ovation, but it was the keynoter, gospel legend and anointed singer Yolanda Adams, that mesmerized the audi-
ence. Singing a medley of songs, Adams took her audience into the soul of gospel music at times rapping in a spiritual way while teaching them about life’s lessons like how to stay away from foolishness on controversial social media threads. She would take four words like “the blood of Jesus” and send the crowd into a frenzy repeating them over and over again, or when she would say, “I know what prayer can do...” as she rapped about life’s challenges, its temptations and how we fall but get back up again. When Adams sings, she puts her whole soul and body into each lyric as if the Holy Ghost was upon her. At one point, Adams voice reached a harmonic crescendo causing Father Pfleger to grab his head in sheer joy. In Pfleger’s anniversary book, Archbishop Blasé J. Cupich, who visited Saint Sabina on March 6, 2016, wrote, “Your history is indeed a proud one in the Archdiocese as noted in your gala’s theme. ‘From Storefront to the World: a century of Discipleship.’ From the first celebration of mass in 1916 in a storefront church on Racine Avenue, Saint Sabina has developed into a parish known around the world as a place where people can experience what the gospel is all about; a place of prayer and worship where parishioners champion justice and transform lives. “Your history embraces the heritage of the founding members of Irish descent, as well as the present members of predominantly African American heritage and many other ethnicities, all of whom have enriched the Auburn-

Doctor Strange is a strange take on fantasy that promotes the greatness of mind over matter By Raymond Ward JAZZ & GOSPEL: The Quest: Live at APC is the latest recorded chapter in composer/pianist Enoch Smith Jr.’s ongoing search to find a seamless synthesis of jazz and gospel and a balance between the spiritual and technical aspects of his creativity. Smith’s 4th album as a leader and first live date will be released this weekend on the Misfitme Music label. “It’s my belief that jazz would not exist in the form it does today if not for Black gospel music and its contributions,” Smith wrote in a Woodshed column titled “Bringing the Gospel to Jazz: A Misfit’s Theme” that appeared in the September 2016 issue of Down Beat magazine. The Rochester, New York-born, Allentown, New Jersey-based musician—with his acclaimed series of gospel-immersed jazz albums (2010’s Church Boy, 2011’s Misfits, 2015’s Misfits II:Pop, and now The Quest: Live at APC)—is at the forefront of bringing jazz and gospel even closer together.
The Quest is drawn from two Jazz Vespers concerts recorded in March and April 2016 at the Allentown Presbyterian Church, where Smith has worked full time as Director of Music and Worship for the last four years. Enoch Smith, Jr.. was raised in Rochester, New York in the Church of God by Faith, a Pentecostal denomination, where he began singing at age 3 in the children’s choir. He later played drums for services, then got a chance to substitute for the regular pianist, making his way through trial and error. “Growing up and playing mostly in church, you get a whole different side of what music is all about,”he says. “For me, it was always more of a spiritual connection than a connection of the head.” Although he had originally intended on becoming a lawyer and had done several internships at Rochester law firms while still in high school, Smith decided to interview for admission at Berklee College of Music at the suggestion of his high school choir director. He was accepted on the spot. “It was amazing and intimidating and exciting all at the same time,” he says of his classes at Berklee. “I definitely saw that I didn’t fit into the mold. I felt like a misfit.” “The transition from playing primarily by ear and then learning theory opened my mind to different approaches, devices, and things that I could use musically to expand or make my playing more interesting,” he adds. “That was the plus side. I think the down side of it is when you get so focused on technique and technical things, it can pull you away from the more spiritual side of life and what brought me to the instrument and things that were naturally expressed. I’m working my way back to where I can play with the same feeling that I (Continued on page 13) 12

Disney and Marvel Studios came together to work some magic over a weekend in Chicago that was just as magical due to the unseasonably warm temperatures. “Doctor Strange” was poised to rake in more than $85 million on its first weekend of domestic release, and the film is worth every penny that moviegoers may have paid to sit in a theater and be mesmerized for about two hours. The film covers much ground, as it is set in New York; we then travel to London and Hong Kong, not to mention Nepal where the famed neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange must first travel in the hopes of restoring life back into his magical hands after he is seriously hurt in a tragic auto accident filled with as many special effects as are seen in the rest of the movie. In Nepal, he meets The Ancient One, a character played by a clean head shaven Tilda Swinton. In this realm, Dr. Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is forced to “check his ego at the door” and submit to the fact that his spirit will actually will his fingers back to a productive state— allowing him to maybe not perform earth-shattering surgeries again, but to at least heal himself and his mind, so that he feels worthy again. He quickly learns that the Ancient One and her enclave, which includes Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, is at the front lines of a battle against unseen dark forces—led by a character named Kaecilius played by Mads Mikkelsen—bent on destroying reality. Before long, Dr. Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence. But his new status as a defender of the world doesn’t come easy. He is taken through one magical sequence after another of him

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking We are One is the title to a classic recorded by Frankie Beverly and Maze. The phrase ‘we are one’ is also the precise expression of mankind. Simply put, we are God’s children that consist of sisters and brothers from every nation. The late former chairperson of Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Rev. Willie Chaplin Barrow would often say, “We are more connected than we are disconnected.” To be honest, this didn’t resonate until years later. Since then I have seen these words manifest time and time again as the power of this truth has made an indelible impression in my life. This truth was further examined when my co-worker, Jen, shared how research indicates that human beings are all one color. Melanin is what causes dark or light skins and differentiates various races. She concluded that because we are from one source, that we are technically all the same. Archaeologists have hundreds of re-
ports that the oldest human remains can be traced to Africa. Not only are we from one source, but also from one country that many report as Ethiopia. Perhaps that is why in the end the scripture states that we All go back to the dust. “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19 NIV) “We are all one” was even closer revealed when Iyanla Vanzant shared a quote about her Native American grandmother. During her show on OWN, the life coach stated that her grandmother often said—there is only one man—All Men—there is only one woman—All Women and there is only one child that is All Children. Whatever I do at any given time—will and should always have a direct effect on you or someone else. Why? Because we are all con-

tial election has caused some strange and rather frightening actions to surface in our country. If allowed, some of these actions could cause a set back of 400 years in our country. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” Since we are one people—from one God—on one earth, you would think it would not be so difficult. Now more than ever, let’s pray for harmony, blessing and God’s grace to live on earth as brothers and sisters spreading God’s love continuously. Do you see the connection….?
action.” Regardless of whether you know it or not—our actions have an inevitable inextricable effect on our sisters and brothers of the world. What we do whether among ourselves or to each other has an immediate intrinsic effect on others whether we know it or not. This is also applicable regardless if the other party knows it or not. I believe it’s because we are spiritual beings emanating from one source therefore we are all connected. Be it plant life or from various ethnic background creeds and colors. The actions that you or I make will in some form or fashion affect everyone else. This is simil- ar to the ‘butterfly effect.’ This is the theory that when a small butterfly flutters its wings in Australia the movement can ultimately cause a hurricane in the United States. Everything and everyone is connected and affected by the other. In conclusion, this recent Presiden-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4)
Council’s Black Caucus steps up in a big way Dear Editor: The thing I have noticed regarding the City Council Black Caucus is it is unpredictable. On many issues where you think a lot or all of the 17 Black aldermen would step up and have a say, all we get is crickets. Then, they do something like last week’s move when they took the city’s department of aviation to task over what’s happening at O’Hare regarding concessions and charges of wage theft. At least one union, and several employees of private companies at the airport, but especially United, said workers are getting the difference between minimum and the tips those employees receive. It is the law that they are to be made whole. 14
Rod Sawyer finally acted like the leader of the caucus as they sent a scathing letter to the department. He blasted negotiations between the department and United over a deal that could conceivably give the airline control over several areas besides the facilities related to aviation. The letter was very clear that the caucus does not want United having any control over retail operations, including duty-free shops, and newsstands or food. Right now, the city has control of those things and a few more. The city shouldn’t be in that business, but like Sawyer is saying, neither should United. I think Sawyer was right on point when he told the head of the aviation department that if United wasn’t treating its current employees right, it makes absolutely no sense to add to the airline’s roster of workers. Sawyer said he could not support expanding United’s contract. Hopefully, he was speaking on behalf of the entire caucus. I have to admit it is a strange issue the caucus

is coming out on. The alderman didn’t say how many workers are ultimately affected. Hopefully, the United-O’Hare issue is the first of many the Black Caucus will begin to get more vocal about and involved with. We really need them to start coming up with more strategies for some kind of economic development in their wards. They don’t know how stupid they look week after week standing around grinning at some North Side alderman’s new multimillion dollar development, and they are happy with a new Harold’s Chicken opening in one of their wards. We also desperately need them to step out of their comfort zones and find some suitable recommendations to deal with the city, school and CPD budget crisis. They have been too docile and too reliant on the mayor who obviously cares little about the wards the caucus members represent. Travis Milton Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Over the past seven years the Foundation has provided thousands of warm coats and toys to children and families in need. Donation boxes are distributed at various locations throughout the city and are collected and sorted by volunteers. The gifts are personalized for the families with age appropriate, non-violent toys provided to the children and warm, new or nearly new coats provided to all family members. Food items are also included in the gift packages. The Calahan family is excited about the opportunity to provide a helping hand to families in need. “It is a calling to support one another by reaching back, giving back, and pulling forward,” said son Edric Calahan. “Our pledge is that no child with a work ethic and desire to succeed should fail,” he added.
