How a Beating and Three Murders Led to the Execution of Tyshawn Lee By J. Coyden Palmer It all began around six in the morning on Aug. 5 when 21-year-old Adarius Hayes was found dead in a car in the 7500 block of South Damen. Hayes, a member of the Killer Ward Gangster Disciples, had been shot in the chest. It was the first shot fired in the latest neighborhood gang rivalry that has gripped the Auburn Gresham community and loosely culminated with the murder of

nine year-old Tyshawn Lee earlier this month. According to several neighborhood

Tyshawn’s short life remembered at funeral —See story on page 2 sources, the Killer Wards are at war with the Bang Bang Gang, a faction of the Terror Dome gang, which itself is a faction of the Black P Stones. Hayes’ murder was just the first in a string of incidents that has taken the lives of innocent victims and members of both gangs alike.

Chicago Police have said Pierre Stokes, Lee’s father, is allegedly a documented gang member with the Killer Wards, along with his relative, Christopher Smith. Neither of the men is cooperating with investigators, according to police. Armed with a warrant, police raided the home of Smith recently, but no charges have been filed. However, the Crusader has obtained exclusive information over the last week in which one could argue Stokes knows exactly the circumstances that led to his son’s murder. Stokes, who goes by the street name “Wooh Gotti,” posted a video on social media showing him, Smith and two other men believed to be other Killer Ward GDs merci-

lessly beating a young man who they believe to be affiliated with the BBG in September. The video was taken down shortly after Tyshawn’s murder, but not before the Crusader obtained a copy of the grainy 30-second clip in which Stokes is heard saying, “F—- BBG,” while he and others kick, stomped and punched the person, who is pleading for mercy while curling up into the fetal position on the ground. According to criminologists and law enforcement experts around the country, gangs use social media sites, like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to make threats against rival gangs, display guns, money or drug use and to showcase beatings and other (Continued on page 2)

Tyshawn’s short life remembered at funeral Rush reaches out to ex-gang leaders for help By Chinta Strausberg To a standing-room-only crowd at Saint Sabina Church, thousands viewed the tiny body of nine-year-old Tyshawn Michael Lee, who was shot multiple times on Chicago’s South Side in what Father Michael L. Pfleger labeled an act of cowardice by “punks” who have no moral values or consciousness and who must be caught. Outside of St. Sabina stood Demetrius Harrison, 9, a fourthgrade student, who held a basketball with farewell messages written on it to his friend Tyshawn. The basketball was much like the one found near the body of

Tyshawn, also a fourth grader at Scott Joplin Elementary School. His bullet-riddled body was found in an alley at 80th and Damen a week ago. The reward for Tyshawn’s killer is now more than $55,000. Inside the church, Tyshawn’s tiny body lay in a red coffin dressed in a white tuxedo and a matching bow tie. A red fedora rested on the left side of his torso. Two basketballs were placed inside of the casket. A steady stream of mourners passed by his tiny coffin, and many of them accepted the tissues church volunteers offered them on both sides of the coffin. Tyshawn’s mother, Karla Lee, and grandmother screamed at the sight of Tyshawn’s body. Their cries and wailing pierced

How a Beating and Three Murders led to the Execution (Continued from page 1) forms of violence they have unleashed on rivals. The practice is called “cyber banging.” Just as the international terrorist group ISIS uses social media to terrorize and intimidate, so do street gangs in America say experts. On Oct. 13, Tracey Morgan, a member of the Bang Bang Gang— a faction of the Black P Stones— was murdered and his mother injured after they were targeted and shot in the 8200 block of South Lafayette. The shooting took place just minutes after Morgan, who was on parole at the time, attended a gang “call-in” meeting designed to reduce violence. The meetings offer gang members social services and other forms of assistance for those who choose to leave the lifestyle, as well as inform them of the consequences if they do not. Known by his street name, “T-Time,” Morgan died at Christ Hospital of a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen, according 2

to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. His mother survived a bullet wound to the arm. Morgan’s murder was troubling to police, who claim the call-in meetings have been productive. “This is an example of what we’re trying to prevent,” said Chicago Police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi at the time. “The irony is that these call-ins are our effort to get these individuals out of a life of violence.” Brianna Denise Jenkins was a former cheerleader at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Palos Hills. Around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, someone approached a car Jenkins and a 20-year-old man were sitting in on the 7800 block of South Honore. The assailant fired several shots into the vehicle, injuring the man who fled on foot and hitting Jenkins several times. She was pronounced dead on the scene. friends, had no gang affiliations. But, police believe the man she was sitting with did. He was a member of the Killer Wards. Around 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 2, Tyshawn Lee was lured into an alley on 80th and Damen where he was executed. The Crusader spoke with sources close to the investigation and those at Scott Joplin School where Lee attended and they say Lee was not the only student in the school who has older relatives with gang ties. At least two family members of Morgan’s were in the same grade with Lee and may have cooperated with those responsible for his death by identifying the boy to his eventual killers, according to the source at the school. “Everyone who works here knows the student population we work with, and we know some of their parents and other relatives have a dangerous lifestyle, so we take precautions. But, this Lee murder shook even the most hardened edu-

cators to the core. We’ve been scared to death since the whole thing happened,” said the source, who said they are speaking out because they believe there is no longer a threat since the family members of Morgan did an emergency transfer out of the school last week. “There was a large police presence all around the school last week because there was fear someone would come after the Morgan family members.” Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy would not comment on specifics of the investigation, but has said the ongoing gang war goes back until at least August, perhaps as far back as two years ago. “We believe this is the most recent in a series of gang-related violent events,” McCarthy said. Residents in the Auburn/Gresham community say their once middle-class, African-American neighborhood has now become rife with gun violence and murder on a

regular basis. Residents are scared and business owners are fleeing, said one resident, who chose to remain anonymous because she has family members in gangs. “We’ve had gangs in the past, but nothing like this where you go after children family members. This is some next level s—-. The people who did this violated the ‘street code’ by going after a little kid with a basketball, and that’s why so many people are willing to talk to police and the news about this. They might as well have shot the Pope because nobody is going to help them now.” In the days following Lee’s murder, a person of interest turned themselves into police accompanied by defense attorney Sam Adam Jr. The person was released without being charged. Since the individual was not charged with a crime, the person’s name was not released to the media, but sources say it was a member of the Morgan family who police suspect was involved. www.chicagocrusader.com

Larry Hawkins school closure to cause hardship to parents Teachers, students protest to keep school open By Erick Johnson On the far South Side neighborhood of Riverside lies a campus where three schools serve the Altgeld Gardens and Phillip Murray homes, two massive public housing projects. On one side of the street is Carver Military Academy, a selective enrollment, nationally known high school where more than 50 percent take Advance Placement Classes and go off to college. It’s where many students from more affluent neighborhoods come to get a top rate education. On the other side is CICS Larry Hawkins High School, a public charter school, whose open enrollment policy gives many students from poor, struggling families a chance to turn their lives around and go to college. Adjacent to CICS Larry Hawkins High School is Carver Elementary School, an institution that has been operating for years. The schools provided a choice for youths living in a housing project that has produced some of the nation’s top athletes, a prominent doctor and a lawyer. But after this school year, students who live in the housing development that was built during World War II, may not have an open-enrollment high school in their neighborhood anymore. To get a diploma, students whose parents have little or no transportation, would have to travel at least five miles to attend an open enrollment school although there’s another high school in their neighborhood. CICS Larry Hawkins High School, an institution named after a legendary Chicago Black coach, who led Carver High to one of the most thrilling state championship wins in Illinois history, is on the verge of closing its doors, an impending reality that may cause hardships for many poor families. On Thursday, November 5, Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool recommended the closure of CICS Larry Hawkins High School, along with three other “underperforming” public charter schools on the South Side. They include the Bronzeville Lighthouse Charter Elementary School, Amandla Charter High School and Betty Shabazz Barbara A. Sizemore Academy Elementary School, which ironically just completed a $1.4 million renovation project for people with disabilities. Before the announcement, the charter schools were among several that were placed on CPS’s Academic Warning List. Since it opened in 2010, CICS Larry Hawkins struggled in the shadows of Carver Military Academy, a historic school whose reputation for scholastic excellence has attracted some of Riverdale’s best and brightwww.chicagocrusader.com

est. According to Chicago Public Schools, 44 percent of the students are Black and 55 percent are Hispanic. The school has a 94 percent annual attendance rate and earned $4 million in scholarships last year. Carver Military Academy also has a 78 percent rate for students taking the Advanced Placement test for Spanish. But while Carver Military Academy continues to excel, CICS Larry Hawkins has struggled since it opened in 2010. In its first year, the school had 400 7th to 12th grade students. Today, the school, whose student body is 98 percent Black has only 175 students, according to CPS. The students ACT test scores, graduation rates and college enrollment statistics are just below the CPS standard. With only a five-year old history, CICS Larry Hawkins has not been given many resources or time to grow and prosper. And unlike Carver Military Academy, teachers and administrators at Hawkins say their school primarily educates students who come from low-income families in the Altgeld Gardens and Phillip Murray homes. The two huge public housing developments, which have a total of 1,900 units, which were built in 1945 and 1954, respectively. School officials at CICS Larry Hawkins point to the success of former basketball stars Tim Hardaway, Bobby Simmons, prominent Judge Michael W. Stuttley and renowned researcher Dr. Lloyd. All four grew up in Altgeld Gardens and attended Carver Military Academy when it was simply a high school with an open enrollment policy. Carver High School became a military academy in 1999 when Mayor Richard J. Daley was in office and Paul Vallas headed CPS. If CPS closes CICS Larry Hawkins High School, many teachers and parents worry that most students from Altgeld Gardens and the Phillip Murray homes won’t qualify for admission in Carver Military Academy. The school requires applicants to have competitive NWEA test scores and meet standards on a two-part assessment test and essay exam. For students who are limited to attending an open-enrollment school like CICS Larry Hawkins, students would have to travel at least five miles to Fenger High School, 11220 South Wallace Street. The trip could be a challenge to poor families with little or no transportation. But officials at CICS Larry Hawkins High School say they aren’t going anywhere. On Monday, November 9, minutes after the school bell ended the day, students, teachers and community leaders kicked off their campaign to keep CICS Larry Hawkins open. Shouting “Save our Schools,” about 125 people crowded the entrance of the high schools as students and teachers urged CPS to keep CICS Larry Hawkins High School

Programs suffer as state budget crisis drags on Tough road ahead as other issues still loom By Erick Johnson As lawmakers move closer to passing two critical health bills, problems in the Black community continue to mount as funding to some social services have stopped because of the budget impasse. On Monday, November 9, Governor Bruce Rauner struck a compromise with Democrats on House Bill 570. Rauner reversed his original eligibility requirements that would have denied state funding to 90 percent of Child Care applicants who qualified in years past. In the Black community, the question is not whether lawmakers and Rauner pass the legislation. The real issue Black leaders say, is when the state’s budget crisis will end, so funding can be restored to programs that have helped thousands get medical assistance for years. Black leaders and health professionals say thousands in the Black community have already been affected by the budget impasse and with lingering issues in Springfield, Lawmakers say despite Rauner’s compromise, the budget crisis is far from being over. Meanwhile, funding has been stopped for critical social service programs in the Black community. These programs include public health clinics, child and family early intervention programs, homeless

shelters, substance abuse programs and services that help fund breast and cervical cancer screenings. Black leaders say these programs that serve the elderly and poor are in jeopardy of being permanently damaged from the budget impasse. The state has a $6 billion budget deficit and owes some $111 billion in pensions. To end the budget impasse, Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and lawmakers must somehow cut funding in some areas or locate resources that will cover the shortfall. And despite Rauner’s compromise on Monday, the budget impasse has already affected an estimated 70,000 children because of the temporary hold on childcare funding. Black leaders say it’s a growing crisis as the budget crisis heads into its fifth month. The state has been working without a budget since July 1. The situation has sparked pleas from Black leaders who have made desperate appeals at rallies that were recently held at Mercy Hospital in Bronzeville and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in Hyde Park. “We can’t allow this to happen,” said Jeanette Foreman, an attorney and volunteer with the African-American Family Association. “These programs affect the Black community and many segments of Chicago.” Dr. Dennis Garrett, a physician

at Mercy Hospital, said the budget crisis has put on hold his Medicaid reimbursement funds that help him treat and mentally ill patients. “When people cannot get their medications, you are going to see a lot of mentally-ill patients walk the streets.” At the Bobby Wright Comprehensive Health Center in Garfield Park, President and CEO Dr. Rashad Saafir said the funding problems forced him to delay paying his 100-member staff on Friday, November 6. Instead, they were paid on Tuesday, November 10. “We’re experiencing cash flow problems and the shortfall is causing us to struggle paying vendors for supplies,” Saafir said. At Rainbow PUSH, Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr. at a press conference on Saturday, November 7, led a group of community leaders in calling for an end to the budget crisis. “An exception needs to be made to restore these programs,” Jackson told the crowd. “These programs are important to the community.” Keith Kelleher, President of SEIU Healthcare Illinois, said Rauner’s proposed cuts “should not have happened in the first place. Since the governor now realizes the needless pain caused by his actions, we call on him to expedite the rules returning children to the program instead of figuring out ways to use them as political pawns.”

EDITORIAL RACIAL UNREST IN ACADEMIA There is a racial wave of unrest sweeping the halls of academia in America. High school and college campuses have long been hotbeds of experimentation regarding social issues and youth have usually been at the center of reform movements. Lately, in America, citizens have become painfully aware of the inequities that come with white privilege and Black oppression, and the seeming lack of will to address injustices by authorities. But things seem to be coming to a head, at least on some campuses. Consider the following recent racially-charged incidents at several colleges and at one high school. Jonathan Butler, a Black graduate student at the University of Missouri, started a movement that has resulted in the resignation of University of Missouri president, Tim Wolfe. Butler went on a week-long hunger strike in an effort to oust Wolfe, who has been accused of mishandling racial tensions at the Columbia, Missouri school. Butler gained the backing of the athletic department and at least 30 football players threatened to boycott games and practices, which would have resulted in the loss of big bucks. Black student groups had been complaining for quite some time about harassment and racial slurs on campus, and recently a swastika made out of human feces was found drawn in a dorm. Ultimately, Wolfe resigned, and expressed the sentiment that his resignation should “serve to heal, and not to hate.” On another front, the University of Notre Dame is offering a class on white privilege. This action has not moved forward without staunch critics. Some believe that such a class would serve as a divisive force between the races, while supporters claim that it would help students become more aware of social injustices. And at Yale University, hundreds of students staged what was called a “March of Resilience” to highlight concerns over racial insensitivity. There have been several racially charged incidents including one wherein a female student was turned away from a party because she was not white. Finally, more than 2,000 students walked out of class at Berkeley High School after a student created a fake website that said “KKK Forever Public Lynching December 9th 2015.” On the other side of the racial fence, a different type of unrest has reared its head. The Project on Fair Representation filed federal lawsuits against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill over their affirmative action admission policies. Basically, high-achieving Asian and white students say that they are discriminated against because of race-based admission policies, and there is a claim that a quota system exists that limits the number of Asian students. When considering these incidents, it is obvious that the issue of race is garnering more and more attention. What is interesting is that in most of these cases, activities are being generated by coalitions, by people of different races working together. At this late stage in the game of life on planet Earth you would think that people would, by now, come to their senses about race. We are all on this little blue-green globe together, and only the really immature continue to wage ridiculous battles against inclusion; against others only because of racial and cultural differences. It is this ilk that will cause the downfall of humanity if something is not done about their actions. Admittedly, the wave of race-based action currently sweeping academia indicates that something is happening; the winds of change are evident, and astute observers already know that the victory will depend on whether the visionaries and progressives outnumber atavistic bigots. Let’s hope they do! In the meanwhile, we should take note of the power that a potential sports boycott had in the outcome of the University of Missouri saga. Money talks!!! A luta continua.

My guess is just about everyone living in Chicago has heard or read about the horrific murder of nine-year-old Tyshawn Lee last week. The circumstances of his death are almost beyond comprehension. More so than the hundreds of murders that took place prior to Tyshawn’s – his murder struck a new nerve in many of us. However, for many that hurt turned to outrage, especially on social media, when it was rumored that Tyshawn’s grieving mother had bought a car with money many thought was intended to be used for the little guy’s funeral. All we know is that the money was raised through the crowdfunding site gofundme.com and it totaled slightly more than $17,000. The mother made a video and posted it to Facebook explaining that she had already been saving for the car, and after her son was murdered she felt unsafe taking public transportation or walking places. Odds are that no one railing against her has lost a son the way she lost Tyshawn. None of us can expect a mother, or any parent dealing with this kind of tragedy to make the absolute best decisions in the days following the death.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Black people used to have compassion Dear Editor:

Black people used to be compassionate. We used to understand that no matter the circumstances we need to embrace the one(s) suffering not attack them. That was the case here, Tyshawn’s mother was attacked by Black peopleheartless Black people. Obviously someone close to her shared the information about the car purchase. Because that person couldn’t mind his or her own business thereby generating this mess, that person is simply scum. In my opinion we need to realize regardless of how much bravado or anger this mother showed, she is hurting. I have to believe there is a pain deep, deep in her soul that none of us will ever experience. That is something we need to recognize and extend our prayers and hands in support, and surely not condemn her. Terrence Charts

Michelle Harris is not the right choice Dear Editor: Can you please get somebody to tell me why out of all the white people in politics in Cook County so much of the mess involves Black folks? This last deal with Dorothy Brown and Michelle Harris is just another example. Sure we have white folks pulling the strings, but there are Black people smack dab in the middle

of it. The Democrats who want to replace Brown with Harris have more nerve than I have ever seen. It is not like any of them have clean hands, but they want to blame what isn’t a full-blown investigation, a maybe investigation, as enough reason to slate Harris instead of Brown. Talk about hypocrites. What has Michelle Harris done to distinguish herself to merit the (Continued on page 15)

COMMENTARY

My own life change Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Life can change quickly. All of a sudden the simplest things started becoming complicated. My logic and rationale were rattled. Headaches and bewilderment started zigzagging my mind. It wasn’t long before my wife Kay decided to take us to my primary care doctor. Within 5 minutes, he tested my knees with a hammer for deep tendon reflexes. My left knee did not react. He ordered me to go to the nearest hospital (John Hopkins). He called ahead to the hospital and got me priority in the Emergency Room. It became apparent to the Emergency Room doctor that I was showing signs of pressure on the brain. A CT scan showed blood shifting my brain. The medics turned me over to Dr. Thai. We would later find out that Dr. Thai is a highly competent brain surgeon. In fact, he was the senior resident for the honorable Dr. Ben Carson. This calmed my concerns. He told me that we would go into surgery the next morning. Many of my concerns were removed as it be-

Harry C. Alford came obvious that I was in gifted hands. We settled into the Intensive Care Unit and began preparing for my surgery. Dr. Thai said that he would be in the next morning before dawn. The staff of the hospital was congenial and obviously well trained. Realizing that my life was now on the line I tried my best to fight off fear as it tried to break through my mental door. I could see fear in Kay’s

eyes and knew that I had to become a “rock.” We told no one at the time, but eventually our twin sons would recognize the signals. Midnight would come soon. The thought of such sensitive surgery made me contemplate my demise. The nurses told us that Dr. Thai prefers to do surgery around 7 a.m. and would first appear at 5 a.m. As we sat in the ICU, time became evermore precious. I decided to console myself by silently repeating The Lord’s Prayer over and over. Fortunately, my faith remained strong. The staff of the hospital was very well organized and professional. They were truly a team as the night ticked by in anticipation of the surgery. There must have been a team of 30 people. Forty percent of whom were Black with the sole mission of my operation. It was so impressive and assuring to Kay and me. At 4 a.m. we became aware of the surgical staff mingling together in a waiting room. They were huddling in preparation of the big operation of the day. At 5 a.m. there was plenty of small talk and then it was announced that Dr. Thai was in the building and would be coming in

for the big moment. Around 7 a.m. I was taken to the operating table and heard those impressionable words: let’s apply the propofol. That is when they put you to sleep. This is the anesthesia that was involved in Michael Jackson’s quest for sleep. I knew that whatever was about to happen I would find out about it later if I survived. Propopyl is the best sleep one can experience. Then presto, I woke up with the capable staff standing around my bedside accompanied by my devoted wife Kay Kay. It wasn’t long before Dr. Thai came and talked to me in a very simple manner. Kay would tell me later that Dr. Thai spoke with her and our sons and that I had done well. That was so relieving for her. Three days later, as predicted, I left the hospital. Medicine has come a long way. My physical faculties were slow, but surprisingly intact. I thank our Lord in so many ways and couldn’t wait to arrive home and be surrounded by my wife and sons. Reflection of that experience and my life were cause for a philosophical review. It occurred to me that so many people were depending on

my duties as a leader in various facets of Black life, education, leadership, economic development, policy, calling a wicked man wicked and marching our multitudes to a better way of living. There was a great need for me to recover quickly even though it has only been a few days there would be thousands waiting for me to continue my work. I cannot let them down. So begins my road to therapy. As I write this document only 3 days after brain surgery I am tussling with Kay about my demanding impatience to begin working, hopefully it won’t be long before I am back to 100% or at least have an assistant to assist me in my duties. GOD IS GREAT! And to deserve such a great God I must commit myself to the leadership and betterment of our people. I am not gone America. It was only a bump in the road. And the best is yet to come. I love you all. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

Fake ‘Hero’ Cop Proves White Lies Matter By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist Writing under the headline, “Police lives matter too,” Chicago Tribune Columnist John Kass summed up the sentiment and mass hysteria - surrounding the supposed Sept. 1 murder of a policeman in a bedroom community 50 miles north of Chicago: The killing of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz had nothing to do with our hashtag politics about which lives matter. Gliniewicz, whose body was found in a marshy area near Fox Lake, was just a cop who’d been doing his job. And he was killed for it, left stripped of his gear. We have since learned that it was all a hoax or, as the chief investigator put it, “a carefully staged suicide” by the man known as G.I. Joe as he was about to be exposed as a thief who had been stealing funds intended to mentor young people interested in becoming police officers to pay his mortgage, a gym membership, travel and a pornographic website. Kass’ assertion notwithstanding, it was about hashtag politics - it was about denouncing the Black Lives Matter Movement and anyone else interested in holding police accountable for killing unarmed citizens. Even though the number of www.chicagocrusader.coM

George E. Curry cops losing their lives in the line of duty by firearms is down this year, cops and conservatives have sought to project a different picture in the aftermath of the August 28 murder of Harris County, Texas Deputy Sheriff Darren H. Goforth, who was repeatedly shot in the back of the head at a service station in Cypress, Texas, a Houston suburb. At an Aug. 30 news conference, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said, “We’ve heard Black lives matter, all lives matter. Well, cops’ lives matter, too. So, how about we drop the qualifier and just say lives matter?”

Just days later, more than 1,000 miles away, the death of Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz in Illinois brought about increased attacks on the Black Lives Matter Movement and President Obama. Now we know that Gliniewicz was lying when he radioed in that he was in pursuit of three suspects - an African American and two Whites - after he was supposedly shot by them. The resulting manhunt cost more than $300,000. Though Obama had strongly denounced attacks on police, his critics pretended he had never said a word. Media Matters, the watchdog group, noted in a headline: “Fox Figures Demand Obama Make Remarks Condemning Violence Against Police Days After He Did Just That.” O’Reilly Factor producer Jesse Watters said, “There is a war on cops in this country. It’s funny, the liberals care more when a lion is killed as opposed to a cop...I think Democrats have created a monster in this Black Lives Matter situation.” Sean Hannity of Fox said: “The president spoke out in the Trayvon Martin case. Spoke out in the Cambridge police case. Spoke out in the Michael Brown case. Mr. constitutional attorney spoke out without evidence presented in all three of those cases and was wrong in all three. My question is, why, after these incidents of assassinations of cops, why doesn’t he speak out publicly about that and

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

take a strong stand?” Frequent Fox guest Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke said, “I think the president of the United States — because he weighed into this days after Ferguson with some inflammatory rhetoric, and where he breathed life into this anti-cop sentiment that now exists in the United States.” As Media Matters pointed out, the myth of the ‘Ferguson Effect’ the idea crime has increased because cops are more restrained because of increased scrutiny in the aftermath of episodes of police brutality - has been thoroughly discredited.” Even so, Fox co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle said, cops “don’t want to be arrested or persecuted for just putting on the blue every morning.” But Radley Balko of the Washington Post destroyed such faulty reasoning. “It is true that we’re seeing an awful surge in murders in St. Louis and Baltimore right now. [Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute] blames this on police reform activists by claiming their rhetoric both emboldens criminals and makes cops either afraid or unwilling to do their jobs,” he wrote on his blog. “On the first point, the implication seems to be that people should just keep quiet in the face of what they perceive to be brutality and injustice, lest it embolden violence against the police...

“The second point is more alarming. If police in Baltimore and St. Louis are letting protesters and critics make them too afraid or spiteful to do their jobs, essentially turning their backs to allow people to be robbed and killed, that isn’t a problem with protester or social justice culture, it’s a problem with police culture...” The real problem is that the crew at Fox TV and other conservatives, some running for president, took the easy and popular way out by rallying around police, even when attacks on them are down, all the facts were not yet in and, in the case of Lt. Joe Gliniewicz in Illinois, he was plotting to have a hit put on a city official because he feared she was on to his trail. All of them owe President Obama and the Black Lives Matter Movement an apology. But, like Donald Trump, they are incapable of admitting they are wrong. George E. COMMENTARY

THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AND REPARATIONS Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill During this Presidential election cycle the issue of reparations for African people in America should be raised just like all the

other interest groups raise their issues and demand a response from the candidates. The backdrop to this idea is centered around the period of 1997. In 1997, the question was raised as to why the President of the United States, William Clinton, decided to speak on the issue of race relations in America at the University of California at San Diego. President Clinton also announced the appointment of a special panel to examine race relations in America that was headed up by noted historian Dr. John Hope Franklin. Further, Clinton announced he would also have a series of town hall meetings throughout the country to address this issue. In this same connection, President Clinton responded to proposed legislation “introduced by a dozen white members of Congress who argued that a formal statement of regret (national apology to African Americans whose ancestors were sold into slavery) would help bind the wounds that still sting 134 years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves in the Confederate South.” Clinton was quoted as saying on CNN’s Late Edition that “An

apology under the right circumstances, those things can be quite important.” Continuing, he said, “Surely every American knows that slavery was wrong, and that we paid a terrible price for it and that we had to keep repairing that… And just to say that it’s wrong and that we’re sorry about it is not a bad thing. That doesn’t weaken us.” During this period in 1997, I made the point that the African community in America should be clear on the eighty year tradition of African leadership in this country seeking relief for our grievances through international bodies. This tradition has been carried out by the petitions to the United Nations by the New African Independence Movement, the Lost-Found Nation of Islam, the work at the United Nations of the International Human Rights Association of American Minorities and the NBUF genocide petition/declarations of 157,000 signatures that were filed on May 20, 1997. It was my observation during this period that the international work of these Black Liberation Movement organizations placed tremendous pressure on the United States government to respond to the various petitions of these groups without identifying

them. Through the procedures of the United Nations these official complaints are forwarded to the State Department. That means the government is fully informed as to the complaint against them by these non-governmental organizations and the nature of the complaint. In fact, through this process nations throughout the world become informed of these complaints. Other factors that caused the United States government to respond to the condition of African people in this country in 1997, as a result of international pressure, can be cited by three additional examples. In response to these complaints and petitions, Mr. Maurice Gle’ le’-Ahanhanzo, U. N. Special Rapporteur on contemporary forums of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance, conducted an official mission to the United States on October 9-12, 1994 “to meet with representatives of the U.S. Government and individuals in the political, economic and social fields who were in a position to provide him with information relating to various aspects of his mandate.” Mr. Gle’le’-Ahanhanzo (who was from Benin in Africa) reportedly stated his belief that “racism

and racial discrimination persist in American society, even if not as a result of a deliberate policy on the part of the United States government.” Also, he found that “sociological inertia, structural obstacles and individual resistance hindering the emergence of an integrated society based on the equal dignity of the members of the American nation and willing to accept ethnic and cultural pluralism. Vested interests, competing influences and the power struggle between the various political and social components of American society also provide opportunities for residual racism and racial discrimination to linger on.” This report was read widely throughout the world by government leaders, scholars and activists. The U.S. government criticized the report. On March 4, 1997, Ren Yanshi of China wrote a stinging critique of the United States human rights record. Mr. Yanshi said, “The United States State Department released its Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 1996 on January 30, 1997, once again distorting and attacking at length the state of human rights in China and more than (Continued on page 15)

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE TRUTH? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Award winning film director Quentin Tarantino gets high props for stepping up to tell some truth about the many murders of African Americans at the hands of misbehaving police officers. How, after all, can you justify the killing of a baby boy, Tamir Rice? Or the illegal choking of Eric Garner? Michael Brown stole some cigarillos. Does that deserve the death penalty? We can call the roll and then we can describe a murder. That’s all Tarantino did. Here’s what Tarantino said – “I’m a human being with a conscience, and if you believe there’s murder going on then you need to rise up and stand up against it. I’m here to say I’m on the side of the murdered.” Tarantino isn’t a “cop hater.” He is, as he said, a human being with a conscience. Too bad we can’t say the same thing about Patrick Lynch (ironic last name), the president of the New York City Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, who called for a boycott of the 6

Tarantino film “The Hateful Eight,” scheduled for release in December. I’m not a huge Tarantino fan, but if the police are going to boycott his film, I will see it at least twice (or buy tickets for somebody) just to have his back. What is wrong with the truth? Quentin Tarantino didn’t say that every police officer is a murderer. He called out those who are and said that he stood with those killed – the Eric Garners, Michael Browns, Tamir Rices of the world. Patrick Lynch and those who share his opinion have so embraced the “thin blue line” that they refuse to decry unacceptable police behavior or even express remorse for the unnecessary killings of citizens. There is an attempt to justify every killing, an attempt to say it is all right to use a chokehold, deemed an illegal maneuver; to massacre a soon to be married Sean Bell; to turn 41 bullets on an unarmed Amadou Diallo (19 of the bullets hit him), to sodomize Abner Louima. In the Louima case, several “officers of the peace” were tried and convicted, but they are among the very few who pay the

SATURDAY, November 14, 2015

Dr. Julianne Malveaux price for their rogue activities. Any human being ought to shudder at these extreme police killings. Too many human beings, too many police officers, seem to think this behavior should not be decried. The police officers that I know speak among themselves about rogue police officers and their unacceptable behavior, but they don’t speak up. So, there are police officers that choose to rape some of the

women they stop for traffic violations. There are police officers that coerce delinquent young girls into prostitution. There are police officers that take the drugs confiscated in drug busts for their own use or to sell. There is silence from police unions regarding these actions. Police unions with integrity would uplift good officers and criticize bad ones. They’d assert, and then enforce, a code of conduct. They’d say there is zero tolerance to illegal police behavior, and then they’d enforce it. Unions are supposed to defend their members, and that makes sense. Even as they defend those that are unjustly accused, they must also be quite clear that they oppose illegal behavior. Officer Randolph Holder, a Guyana native, whose application to the police academy included an essay that said he wanted to be a role model, was killed in late October by a criminal who was fleeing him. His death was a tragedy. His family, the community, and his fellow officers, mourns him. We who are human must mourn him. We who depend on law enforcement officers to maintain order in our communi-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

ties must condemn the culture of violence that led to his death. And we who are human and object to violence must also object to the police violence that left Eric Garner dead. We must also criticize the grand jury that decided that his murderer, “Officer” Daniel Pantaleo, did nothing wrong. We must decry the folks who said that Garner was complicit in his own death because he was overweight. There is nothing wrong with the truth. Quentin Tarantino spoke it. The rabid Patrick Lynch opposes truth and calls for boycotts on a Tarantino film to punish him. Where are the police officers that will cross the thin blue line to hold fellow officers accountable? Why are so many silent in the face of police brutality, murder, and injustice? Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist based in Washington, D.C. Her latest book “Are We Better off? Race, Obama and Public Policy” will be released in November 2015 and is available for preorder at www.juliannemalveaux.com www.chicagocrusader.com

THIS IS A REAL SHAME Ain’t it bad enough that a 9-yearold was lured into an alley and shot execution style for the sins of adults, including those who helped him get here in the first place? Rumors are flying that funds raised have been misused by the mother. She bought a car we are told and a Gucci purse, not to speak of all of that good hair

Harry C. Alford Tyshawn Lee that hung down as long as Lady Godiva when she rode that horse, that the mother wore at the funeral under a red hat. She was really broken up and word reached Ima that the child didn’t live with her no way, he was living with the Grandmother, who we are still waiting to hear from. Ima bet the Granny knows the shame the parents have heaped upon this child and should be held responsible. But then what can you expect from a pole dancer? Ima can’t hardly write this without upchucking, so this item will be short this week with more to come next week. But you better read the exclusive on the front page of this newspaper to get the real insight of the sickness and worthlessness of those involved in the death of this kid. All Ima can add is THIS IS A REAL SHAME! -ImaDUNKIN DO-NOT Ooh wee! So many Negro state officials are mad at Rep. Ken Dunkin they are turning blacker than a pirate’s boots. We hear some of them www.chicagocrusader.com

is openly saying he indirectly caused the death of State Rep. Esther Golar who died after leaving her hospital (against doctor’s orders) to be in Springfield for a vote. It wasn’t just any kind of vote—-the Black Caucus members were trying to stop that crazy Governor Bruce “I WILL EAT YOUR YOUNG” Rauner from cutting all the benefits that go toward child care. Because Ken was kicking it in New York at a tennis match, we hear that this high-yellow Negro’s actions, caused every other Democrat in the House to have to be in Springfield—including Golar—-to unite with the Riddler, we mean Mike Madigan. Now we is told that when Dunkin high-tailed it in Golar’s funeral with Rauner at his hip, many Black Caucus members were furious. They are now wondering if Dunkin did a double cross against them and their leader, Madigan. We hear some of them was heard calling Dunkin out his name and saying if that “n-word” had shown up to “vote maybe Esther would still be alive.” Now we is sorry that Esther Golar passed away by disobeying doctor’s orders—but, we have got to wonder if her courageous act was all in vain. Dunkin, on the other hand, is being accused of being a “sellout” by a preacher connected to the rooftop jack-leg down the street from de Crusader. We is also hearing that Dunkin’s DO NOT (vote) is tied to de hip of some ugly, Planet of the Ape-looking young woman with a giant weave who be spreading lies in Springfield and Chicago and is tied to some union or some community group that is secretly tied to the fifth floor of City Hall. It is said that not only did Golar not take too kindly to Rep. Dunkin when she was alive, but she also “hated (woman’s name) with a passion because she thought she was a spy and was on some bull—@##,” said one person who likes to drink Crown Royal and eat cold Harold’s chicken

give her the time of day,” the man said. Will Dunkin’s betrayal of Negro politicians in Springfield be enough to oust him from power? Probably not. Dunkin be a smart Negro from the ‘hood who knows how to play the game. And, he looks Chinese— -and everybody know de Chinese be smart people. In the meantime, Dunkin is now being referred to in words that rhyme with “itch cass wigger” by other elected officials who claim he has been “in hiding” from angry constituents who include single mothers and child care workers who are angry about his proud statements about why he missed that important vote. A drunk staggering by his office on 75th Street peeked in the window and said he didn’t see Dunkin no where in sight—-but he failed to mention it was 11 p.m. at night and he was taking a leak against the wall. Now, somebody named Andre Smith, who once had his office blown up, is saying he is ready to take Dunkin out. Smith, a preacher by trade, has publicly accused his rooftop friend and others of plotting with the dapper-dressed Dunkin to mess with Madigan, who for the first time has to deal with someone leaving his plantation. As if he ain’t hated enough, this week Dunkin did not vote with his party and caused the Democrats to lose again . . . If you think this item is hot wait until next week . . .

Tyshawn’s short life remembered at funeral (Continued from page 2) mentored youth who wanted to become policemen. Pfleger said people must have the courage to look at the root of this problem that is holding the community in fear and causing youth to wonder if they are going to grow up. “No child should have to wonder not what they are going to be when they grow up, but if they grow up.” He said no child should have to wonder about their fate. Thanking Tyshawn for his love of life, Pfleger said he was smart, loving, caring, and loved to play video games because he was tech savvy. “He dreamed of playing for the NBA.” Saying Tyshawn will find joy in heaven, Pfleger called the roll asking him to “say hello to Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner…. Death for the believer is never an end.” He called for “a movement to change” the rise in violence. Elected officials attending the funeral included: Mayor Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Rep. Bobby L. Rush (D-1); Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin; former U.S. Education Secretary Arnie Duncan; Aldermen David Moore (17th) and Derrick Curtis (18th); and Scott Joplin Elementary School principal, Alene Mason, who read a resolution. Others, who called Pfleger to of-

fer their assistance in stemming the violence, included Chicago Archbishop Blasé J. Cupich and filmmaking giant, Spike Lee. After the funeral, Tyshawn Lee’s parents, Karla Lee and Pierre Stokes, Jr., released white doves before the son’s casket was placed in the “Last Ride Funeral Services” carriage, pulled by a motorcycle and its owner, Ron Roach. Interviewed outside of St. Sabina after the funeral, Rush, who is also a minister, spoke about his recent visit to the ADMAX Prison in Florence, Colorado where he met with former gang leaders, Larry Hoover and Jeff Fort. He asked for their help in stemming the violence that took the life of Tyshawn. “I asked them what can be done about the murder and mayhem on our streets. They don’t agree with it. They don’t want it and said it was senseless. They are going to do everything they can to lend their voices to the chorus of people who are trying to stop this violence,” Rush said. On the killing of Tyshawn, Rush, who lost his son, Huey Rice, 29, to gun violence in 1999, said, “How can any human being not grieve for this young man and his family, but how many of us know that this is not something that is unique. There are so many funerals, so many days like this. We have to work hard.”

Harry C. Alford Ken Dunkin after midnight. AfricanAncestry.com Launches ‘The Ultimate Selfie’ Student Program to Help Educators Connect Black Identity to Excellence and Achievement by Mixing Genetics Ancestry Tracing and Student-based STEM and Cultural Projects to 6th12th graders and College Students We all know that Selfies can be manufactured, self-impressions of how we want the world to see us. But what do they really say about who we are? African Ancestry, Inc., the Black-owned technology company that pioneered genetics ancestry tracing for people of African descent, has created a student program to help educators get to the root of that question. Titled The Ultimate Selfie … Connecting Identities to Excellence & Achievement (TUS), the customizable program is designed for grades 6-12 and College students. “Studies have shown that young people with healthier identities are more likely to be successful in school and life and less likely to bully or be violent, among other things,” said African Ancestry cofounder Gina Paige. “The ultimate Selfie was created to enlighten on identity, educate on the importance of knowing who you are and inspire respect and pride among participants.” Broward County School System, Florida Memorial College, Rutgers University and University of Maryland, Baltimore are a sampling of the schools that have already taken part in TUS. While each school is invited to customize their program based on their goals and activities, the core program includes: • Student Learning Activity (developed by participating schools and 10

encouraged to include STEM projects) • African Ancestry Education Presentations • Ancestry Testing and Reveal Events for students, families, educators and administrators While AfricanAncestry.com has worked with youth since its inception in 2003, The Ultimate Selfie is an updated student initiative developed in conjunction with educators and psychologists to make for a formalized, impactful program offering. The Ultimate Selfie is also available for any organization with a focus on young people. AfricanAncestry.com’s ‘The African Ancestry Experience,’ a one-day ancestral identity program for Afri can American employee networks

and other relevant groups, is also available during Black Heritage Month and throughout the year. For more information on African Ancestry’s programs, contact Nichole Taylor at ntaylor@africanancestry.com. ABOUT AFRICAN ANCESTRY Founded in 2003, African Ancestry Inc. (AfricanAncestry.com) pioneered African lineage matching in the United States utilizing its proprietary DNA-database to more accurately assess present-day countries of origin for people of African descent. Both Jones and Edwards – who are enrolled in the Honors Program at De La Salle – have been invited to the Anti-Defamation League’s Freedom Award Dinner on Nov. 18 at the Hilton Chicago. COMMUNITY

Here’s a cause worth funding in Englewood The Englewood community in Chicago’s South side is often in the news but rarely does the media capture and publicize the positives taking place such as the quiet contributions to the health and well-being of its residents being made by the Beloved Community Family Wellness Center (BCFWC). In 2005, a building on 6821 S. Halsted, appeared to be under renovation. From the outside it was not obvious what type of business it was to house, not even after the sign was erected. Several residents who had lived in the community for many years thought it was a church, abortion clinic or perhaps a community center for the many social service

organizations in Englewood. The skepticism is probably because the name does not immediately indicate its purpose – a medical clinic. BCFWC however, is a Federally Qualified Health Center that has provided care to more than 4,214 individual patients. Those patients have generated more than 13,826 visits in the greater Englewood community. Inside patients not only receive premier care by board certified clinicians; they receive it in a first class facility that is both modern and clean. The physicians and staff are reflective of the community and possess a unique ability to engage patients in a professional manner BELOVED COMMUNITY FAMILY Wellness Center Medical Team stands ready to expand services and build a new dental clinic to service medically underserved Englewood residents. Treasurer Summers joins campaign to spread message of peace Attends Preservation of Life Campaign Prayer Vigil and Walks Chicago’s Neighborhoods Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers participated in two Preservation of Life Campaign events Halloween weekend led by Pastor Michael Eaddy to speak out against senseless gun violence and help spread a positive message of peace. On October 30, the Treasurer provided a prayer at the Pre-Halloween Midnight Prayer Vigil at 56th and May,

where earlier this year a mother and grandmother lost their lives to gun violence, and a child was shot and wounded. On Sunday, Nov. 1, Treasurer Summers gathered with Pastor Greg Moody and local leaders from across the city at the Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church of Chicago to pray, walk the neighbor-

hood and hang Preservation of Life Campaign door hangers. “Only together can we fight for a safer future for our Chicago’s children,” Treasurer Summers said. “I’m proud to support Pastor Eaddy as we go door to door and pray together to bring an end to the senseless violence occurring on our city streets.”

By Raymond Ward LEGENDARY COMPOSER: Billy Strayhorn was always the most unselfish, the most patient, and the most imperturbable, no matter how dark the day. I am indebted to him for so much of my courage since 1939. He was my listener, my most dependable appraiser, and as a critic he would be the most clinical, but his background—both classical and modern—was an accessory to his own good taste and understanding. ...Duke Ellington 2015 marks the centennial of the birth of legendary composer Billy Strayhorn and in honor of the celebration STRAYHORN: AN ILLUSTRATED LIFE has been published by Agate Publishers ( Agate Bolden: November 10, 2015; $35). Edited by A. Alyce Claerbaut and David Schlesinger, this beautiful, oversized volume commemorates the life and music of Billy Strayhorn, one of the most important—yet under appreciated—contributors to 20th century American music.

Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life celebrates the life of late jazz legend Billy Strayhorn, who is perhaps best known for the 28 years he spent as Duke Ellington’s “writing and arranging companion.” But Strayhorn’s significant contributions to the American jazz canon extend well beyond his partnership with Ellington—and they have been underrated for years. This luxurious coffee-table book, Strayhorn collects essays, photography, and rare memorabilia—such as handwritten scores—to chronicle every stage of Strayhorn’s life. The book is divided into two major sections. Part One: Musical Orbits focuses on the arc of Strayhorn’s musical life, starting with his childhood musical education and ending with his post-Ellington work. Part Two: Moral Freedoms explores Strayhorn’s life outside of music, including his civil rights activism and his open homosexuality. Posthumously, Strayhorn has emerged as one of the major forces who shaped the jazz canon. One way to remember these accomplishments is to consider what he left behind—not only the songs he wrote, but also the memories he left with friends, family and colleagues. This book attempts to bring these songs and stories to a wider audience by collecting biographical history, personal memoir, critical appreciation and images relating to various facets of Strayhorn’s life. Contributors include Ramsey Lewis, award-winning jazz composer and musician; David Hajdu, Strayhorn’s award-winning biographer; Walter van de Leur, jazz musicologist; and author of the definitive book about Strayhorn’s music; Robert Levi, director of the Billy Strayhorn: Lush Lifedocumentary; Bruce Mayhall Rastrelli, Strayhorn scholar and director of the stage production Lush Life; and members of Billy Strayhorn’s family, including nephew Gregory A. Morris, executor of the Strayhorn estate. Enthralling, enriching and visually captivating, this collection lauds a beloved jazz icon and captures a legacy that will influence generations to come. 12

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe A Candle loses no light by lighting another candle. This candle that I speak of is more than mere wax but rather the God in you. Moreover, the lighting of the candle is to awaken, ignite or to put a spark in someone’s spirit to cause optimum growth. I remember Les Brown, my mentor often saying ‘success isn’t success unless you have a successor.’ In other words, it is so important to understand that God has blessed you to be a blessing to others. To whom much is given, much is required. It was never intended for you to take your knowledge and wisdom with you to the grave. The good book clearly helps us to understand our role in Matthew 5:1416 –14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. –15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to

Effie Rolfe all in the house. –16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good

works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Yes, this verse is dealing with the spiritual—but honestly, when it comes to the essence of life and who you are— it’s all about your spirit man. Unfortunately, too many are afraid or unwilling to assist others thinking it might minimize their own radiance. Nothing could be further from the truth. Nothing takes away from the beauty, class and smarts you have more than selfishness. When you are grateful for the gifts and talents bestowed upon you and pay it forward by helping others to grow, your illumination glares intensely more than ever before. There is beauty in unselfishness that causes you to shine bright like a diamond in the sky. Furthermore, collectively we shine brighter together. You are blessed—not to boast but rather to be a blessing. Whatever you do is to ultimately glorify God—the giver of all good things.

Success is success unless you have a successor. You cannot receive with a closed hand. In order to give or to receive—you ‘must’ open your hands and your mind. On the job—become a mentor to someone. Be a teacher—in and out of the classroom. Your child or not—we are all family—become a volunteer member of the village. Sorry, but you don’t have the luxury to pick and choose whom to serve. Remember, to whom much is given, much is required. Actually, blessing others with your gifting, knowledge and wisdom can be another form of giving offerings to God. I truly believe He will honor whatever you share with a cheerful heart to impact the kingdom and to make the world a better place. Finally, here’s a question to ponder—‘are you a fuse or a diffuser?’ Did you help someone to light a candle or did you cause their light to grow dimmer? Make your life

count and be a blessing to someone that needs what you have. Most people are looking for a hand up—not a hand out. Impart your knowledge and wisdom to bless generations to come. We’ve all stood on the shoulders of giants. You arrived at your current address from the backs of pioneers that were generations before you. In closing, “We cannot teach people anything—we can only help them discover it within themselves.” Have you lit a candle today— prep yourself to help someone else...? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. Dr. Elisa Bell, M.D. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, with internships at Loyola Medical School and University of Michigan Hospitals and has been in practice for over 15 years. Known and respected as the ‘Community Psychiatrist’, for her concerned activism with social justice, incarcerated youth and mental health issues related to the criminal justice system. Dr. Bell is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, and is a sought-

after guest expert on CBS News, FOX-TV and CLTV. Is there a need to discuss psychiatry and spirituality? “Definitely! These discussions are vitally important,” according to Dr. Bell. The statistics themselves tell the story. Many experts believe that we as a society are approaching a critical tipping point, because over 8.4 million young people in the U.S. are experiencing some type of mental health stress in today’s society, yet less that 5% receive services designed to address these issues. Further, current studies reveal a variety of social and cultural factors, especially within the African-American community, which contribute to this unfortunate situation. Included are persistent factors of shame/stigma associated with mental health care, poverty and daily urban violent trauma experienced by them and their families – domestic and gang violence, sexual abuse, drug use and addiction. But on the brighter side —there is transformational assistance and hope available! Dr. Bell will share some spiritually-focused psychiatry success strategies for everyone to follow. But the lifestyle caught up with him and after receiving bad financial advice from a man he was in business with, it all came crashing down as Walker had to file for bankruptcy and was arrested for writing bad checks to a Las Vegas casino. That’s when he knew who was truly in his corner. “People were acting like they were my friend, but they wouldn’t take my phone calls,” said Walker during the question and answer session with audience members. “There was a black cloud

hanging over my head and the way the media was reporting it, it made me seem like I was this horrible person. So I wanted to do a documentary film to tell my story and it has done wonders for me. Morgan Stanley has hired me to travel around the country to speak with college athletes about finances and share my story. I’m also working as an NBA analyst.” Walker told the audience it was hard to watch his mistakes chronicled on film for the world to see. But he said he cannot change who he is and helping others, even if it causes him public humiliation, is a part of his makeup. “While I wish I had done a lot of things differently, I can’t honestly sit here and say I would not build my mother an extravagant house from the ground up,” Walker

said. “I can’t say I wouldn’t buy nice things for the people I love or spend the money I made on expensive gifts for myself. But what I have learned is that all of those things need to be done in moderation and not in excess.” Moore-Burrell believes that everyone has the ability to showcase their talents and share their gifts with the world regardless of their circumstances. She believes humans have an innate trait to do this. “I hope my film helps someone who thinks they are limited by a disability by showing them they can achieve their goals. Because I couldn’t read, didn’t mean I couldn’t succeed,” MooreBurrell said. “Curiosity is something you cannot have too much of. Look around

you when you’re in a room. If you’re the smartest person in the room then you’re in the wrong room.” Harris said he is proud of what the festival is becoming in Black Chicago. He said spreading the event via word of mouth and social media is bringing a lot more attention to the festival. His long-term goal is to give the festival the same prestige as Cannes in France or the Sundance in Utah. He believes Black movies matter and have a large place in the billion dollar movie industry. “Moreso than the money, this is about telling our own story and controlling the narrative,” Harris said. “I believe over these first five years people are seeing how possible it is to do this so now it’s time to go to the next level.”

In fact it is the United States itself, the selfdeclared human rights authority that has a very poor human rights record in the world today.” The third additional and final example of international pressure placed on the United States concerning the condition of Black people was the October 16, 1995, Million Man March led by Minister Louis Farrakhan. The impact of this event around the world was witnessed recently by the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March that was held on October 10, 2015, where,

African people worldwide. We should demand that the issue of Reparations for African people be a central point of discussion for all Presidential candidates and that negotiations for this long standing issue begin. Reparations for the repair of the damages inflicted on African people as a result of our enslavement in the western hemisphere should be the key issue we fight for during this Presidential election cycle.

Did anyone ask what background she has involving anything to do with courts? For I don’t know how long Democrats have supposed to be the party with Black people’s interest at heart. What we have been getting lately is Democrats pitting Black people against one another. Look at the fact that for a long time we were going to have U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly running against another Black woman, Andrea Zopp for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senator. On the city council we had one Black woman drop out of a race because it would have meant she would be challenging one of her Black colleagues. Now it is likely to be Brown against Harris. Dorothy Brown has made it clear that she will run for re-election even though the Dems did not slate her. I say “you go girl!” I am definitely going to support her. Michelle Harris needs to sit down, be quiet and hope she can keep her city council seat next time around. Sylvester Thurgood

Dear Editor: Whether it is for an alderman or president, the first thing any candidate should understand is that every nook, cranny and loose rock from your past is going to be looked into. The higher the office the deeper your opponent will look and the longer the news media will look. How this reality escaped Dr. Ben Carson is beyond the thinking of a normal person. Now that the looking has begun Dr. Carson is being exposed as a stranger to the truth of his own life. Carson lying about whether he was offered a full scholarship to West Point reminded me so much of Mayor Richard M. Daley last year when he was to testify about the Millennium Park restaurant deal and during deposition he said he “disremembered.” I guess that word fits Dr. Carson because he can’t seem to get his story straight about whether he stabbed a kid while in high school, sheltered some white students from the Detroit riots in 1968 or was given $10 by a Yale professor. Dr. Carson made his own case worse by challenging the news media when they sought clarification on those stories. Of course, some

would have ignored the clarification if he had given it. The point though was he should have provided any evidence he had. Instead Dr. Carson played a game with reporters asking them to sign an affidavit in order for him to give them information. As proud as Black people were when Rev. Jesse Jackson ran for president, especially the first time, as well as President Barack Obama; we have to feel the exact opposite of pride when it comes to Dr. Carson. Hopefully, he will put himself out of his misery and leave the race soon. Teddy Bragg

The Governors State University Athletics program has been accepted for membership in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). The CCAC is one of 24 National Association of Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) conferences, with a membership of colleges and universities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. GSU becomes one of the few public institutions, and the only public institution in the State of Illinois, in CCAC’s portfolio. Presidents of the 15 conference schools voted unanimously to accept GSU after a short presentation by the university’s leaders. The presentation detailed the benefits and value GSU will bring to the conference as members. The vote took place at a CCAC meeting at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. “Governors State University is proud to be accepted into the CCAC. We admire CCAC’s integration of academics and athletics and its strong commitment to the student-athlete. On behalf of the entire GSU community, I want to thank the CCAC presidents for inviting us to join this distinguished Conference,” said GSU President

Elaine P. Maimon. In April, GSU was accepted into the NAIA and began non-conference competition under the NAIA banner in seven sports for the 20152016 season—women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s basketball. GSU will begin CCAC competition in the fall of 2016 and will play in the conference’s South Division, joining Calumet College of St. Joseph; Holy Cross College; Indiana University, South Bend; Olivet Nazarene University; Purdue University, Calumet; Purdue University North Central; the University of St. Francis, and Trinity Christian College. GSU Athletic Director Tony Bates said he looks forward to the competition being in the conference will provide. “We are excited to be in one of the toughest conferences in the country, both on and off the court. We hope to continue the CCAC tradition of classroom intellect and hard play in many years to come.” For more information on GSU athletics, visit www.gsujaguars.com.
