Time to abolish the Electoral College By Chinta Strausberg It is time to abolish the archaic Electoral College, being blamed for handing Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump the White House, though Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, according to Reverend Jesse Jackson. “It’s fight back time,” Jackson said during a diverse meeting with a number of community leaders at a press conference over the weekend. Jackson also discussed Trump’s win on his Up Front TV show with Chicago Sun-Times reporter Mudlyne Ihejirika; Jane Ramsey, adjunct professor, University of Chicago; Darryl Dennard, host of Chicago Speaks, and Reverend

THE NUMBERS CONTINUE to grow with leaders calling for the discontinuation of the Electoral College. Rev. Jesse L. Jackson recently held a press conference to announce his disapproval of the current use of the Electoral College and to urge an organized effort locally and across the nation to abolish its use. Trump Fanned Flames of Racism By Chinta Strausberg The fears of those who felt the negative energy of Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric are coming to the fore. Targets of the negative comments Trump made during his campaign include immigrants, the disabled, and women. Members of those communities are especially concerned about their future treatment now that Trump is president-elect. The concerns of the African American community were voiced by Chicago pastor and community activist Father Michael L. Pfleger. He acknowledged that those speaking out represent “the voices of black and brown parents who fear that their children will be further attacked by a militarized police department or a stop and frisk police state” that Trump indicated he would create.

abiding, the threat of being deported to their home countries after many years of living in the U.S. is their daily nightmare. Young millennials and Black Lives Matter supporters have expressed concern that rogue police officers would no longer fear the Justice Department stepping in to hold officers accountable, if certain Trump appointees assume office, and question “who would we turn to for justice and accountability if senior officials are rubber stamping Trump’s policies?” Religious communities too feel the flames of (Continued on page 14)

Pfleger March Exposes Mt. Greenwood Racism By Chinta Strausberg Father Michael L. Pfleger on Sunday blamed the nationwide protests and victims of racial acts (including his own son) on Trump’s fanning the flames of racial politics that appeals to white privilege. Citing the overt hate acts blamed on Trump’s racially-charged campaign, Father Pfleger acknowledged that “my own son’s car was vandalized” though he is not sure it had anything to do with the fact that his son lives in a mostly white neighborhood or that his son’s last name is Pfleger. “We’ve seen a man pulled from his car at Roosevelt Road and beaten because they said he voted for Trump… ,” Pfleger said, while listing similar acts of hate that have occurred as a result of Trump’s anti-immigration, anti-disability, and anti-women remarks. Narrowing his comments to Chicago, Pfleger gave a chilling account of his recent protest in Mount Greenwood, a southwest side community of active and retired Irish Catholic policemen and firemen. It was in Mount Greenwood two weeks ago where a road rage incident occurred between Joshua Beal, 25, and two off duty Chicago police officers. Beal, from Indianapolis, was in Chicago to attend his cousin’s funeral. He allegedly pointed his gun at the police and was fatally shot. The Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA) is investigating the case. Police arrested Beal’s brother, Michael Beal, 28, accusing him of allegedly trying to take an officer’s gun and of choking him. Michael Beal’s $500,000 bail was paid anonymously and he was released last Thursday. The fallout from Beal’s shooting death took an ugly turn when students from Marist, a Catholic high school, reacted negatively to a planned Black Lives Matter protest. Marist Principal Larry Tucker canceled classes upon learning of racially charged Tweets sent out by his students. He expelled five of his students; however, more than 5,000 supporters signed an online petition asking that the expulsions be reversed. Last Tuesday Pfleger, accompanied by 30 protesters including community activist Jedidiah Brown, were at 111th and Kedzie where Pfleger said they were met by “angry” white people. “We said two things… we wanted transparency and we wanted to make sure all the cameras are looked at” involving the shooting of Beal. “We just wanted justice. “Because of what happened out there on Sunday afternoon and the racial slurs, we wanted to make a statement that there is no place in Chicago that any individual, despite 2

their race or their creed, should not be able to go and not feel threatened and feel like they are not welcomed.” But protesters’ demands were met with jeers and racism and they were told “go back to your ghetto. Get out of here you, n….” “I was called a ‘n….’ “I saw a mother and a young sixth or seventh grade daughter together give me the finger and tell me ‘F Pfleger.’” Pfleger said the crowd’s anger got so bad that the police told them to leave because they could no longer protect them. “We went down an alley and back to our cars when over 100 folks came running down the block and the police said ‘get out of here now…. ‘We can’t stop them.’ “They had to escort us down an alley to get us out of Mount Greenwood in 2016. “I said then, and I’ll say it today, I have not seen such hate and such anger since I was a junior in high school in 1966 in Marquette Park. This is 2016,” said Pfleger. Pfleger’s 1966 comment was a reference to the day when he pulled over his bike to look at his neighbors spitting, cursing and throwing rocks at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was leading an open housing march in Marquette Park. Pfleger says he is a priest today because he marveled at Dr. King’s ability to conduct a peaceful, non-violent march even in the face of possible death. Activist Brown, who is also a minister, said they later went back to Mount Greenwood, and were again

Time to abolish the Electoral College (Continued from page 1) thing that necessarily takes away from blue collar whites. They’ve been convinced of this through the constant right wing sort of efforts to get that kind of message out, because it’s what has supported Republican candidates and it’s wrong,” Martiere told the Chicago Crusader. “There has to be an outreach by progressives to blue collar whites, to get them on board as part of the movement towards sound progressive policies which are evidenced–based and help everyone. It creates a better economy for everyone. That is not what blue collar whites think. That is why they are voting the way they are voting and we need to get them aboard,” Martiere said. Agreeing with Reverend Jackson, that it is fight back time, Dr. Michael Seng said the Electoral College needs to be abolished. “That was one of the problems after the Bush/Gore election. I think it was a big mistake for the American people to let that go. I think there should have been a movement to abolish the Electoral College at that time, in 2000. “It is unrepresentative and nobody

understands it,” Seng said of the Electoral College. “Perhaps that’s the biggest reason of getting rid of it because people don’t understand it. In a democracy, we should not have a procedure that people don’t understand” he said. According to attorney Jeanette Foreman “it’s the way Hitler did it, by ravaging our minds with repetitive messages that are very emotional, very galvanizing…but using it in a way to actually change and guide your mind like they did with Trump…. We know that repetition is the key to being able to have an idea stick in a person’s mind and eventually the person will repeat it.” Repetition “is the secret of how 40 percent or more of Americans have been persuaded by Trump to believe his lies even though they are blatantly not true. Like Obama not being born in this country, for instance,” Foreman said. Natalie Howse, president of the Cook County Bar Association, said, “we did not protest the Electoral College and its process in 2008 and 2012 because Barack Obama won decisively.” Howse added that “Presidentelect Trump has advocated for some

Ralph Martiere things I don’t think would be very good for the Black community, like stop and frisk.” N’Digo Publisher Hermene Hartman said that on December 19, 2016, the Electoral College has to certify the votes for president and vice president. In Illinois, there are 20 electors. She said there is still time for Clinton to win, by asking the electors to abstain their votes. Several leaders said there is a petition

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

being circulated to abolish the Electoral College. A strong proponent of this movement is Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA). “The Electoral College has outlasted its usefulness. It is part of the Constitution written when communication was by pony express,” she said. However, a strong setback to the proposed legislation is that it has to be approved by three-quarters of all states within seven years after passage by Congress. It’s questionable whether or not this will happen. Millennial Keena Carson, founder of Project M.A.R.C.H., said the election of Trump is “unfortunate” and that too many people didn’t take the election seriously, like the rumored stories of the “15 thousand who voted for Harambe, the gorilla who was shot dead at a Cincinnati zoo after a child had fallen into an enclosed area.” This is the second time in 16-years that Democrats (Al Gore and now Clinton) won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College vote. “It’s fight back time,” Jackson said, urging unity among civil rights groups, and organizing for social justice. www.chicagocrusader.com

Hidden Agenda To Remove The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum From The Pullman National Monument By Dr. Lyn Hughes This article is written in response to comments made by Lynn McClure; Midwest Regional Director of the National Parks Conservation Association, speaking on behalf of the Pullman National Monument. Her comments appeared in the Chicago Tribune article written Sunday November 7, 2016: “The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum is in the Pullman district, but Randolph’s work organizing and guiding the union was done largely out of Harlem, in New York City, McClure said, which presents challenges to the Chicago site.” What is most troubling to me is the fact that for two years before the desig-

Lyn Hughes nation of the Pullman National Monument (PNM) in EVERY piece of marketing material distributed, stories written, all documents, suggestions, etc.; not to mention the great speech by Barack Obama... “Black Labor,” “A. Philip Randolph” and “the Pullman Porters” was mentioned REPEATEDLY, and used as a selling point to gain the respect and support of the Black community. Why is it now that the designation has been granted and the development is taking place, the story of the Porters has mysteriously become “challenging to the site”? Another equally important question, why is it that anyone thinks we need assistance in telling (interpreting) our own story? What an insult! “You cannot separate A. Philip Randolph from the Pullman Porters. That is what made history. Further the efficacy of any attempt to change that to the contrary is nonexistent.” The only “challenge” that I see with the exception of the work being done by the Chicago Neighborhood Initiative is the GENTRIFICATION TRAIN traveling at high speed headed straight toward the north end of the PNM; where the population is 95% African American and where the museum is located and has been for 22 years. That train is being driwww.chicagocrusader.com

ven by those outside private consultants who have a laser like focus, strategically targeted by continuous attempts to change the narrative that we at Pullman are finally and collectively telling, just fine, by ourselves. By definition WE are the longtime community residents, business owners and stakeholders. That is not to say ALL of Pullman, because that would be a misrepresentation, because whether people will admit it openly or not, there are still those closet racists who say and do things behind closed doors to undermine the work that was set is in motion by President Obama’s designation. It has taken this community decades to get to a place where WE as a direct result of the designation, have been forced to recognize, it is in our best interest to work together. The executive order makes it clear, as it states the inclusions of Black Labor History. That is where the National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum comes in. We were telling that story before the National Park Service came. In addition, we continually take every opportunity to remind people, that Dr. Jonathan Jarvis, Director of the National Park Service, made it very clear that the “Black Labor History” story was a strong interest of theirs because of its missing place in the National Park’s vast inventory. He acknowledged the museum’s significance in the plans when he said to me, “the Pullman Porter Museum is already telling this story, you are ready to go.” That being said, the only way to stop us from doing what we have been doing for two decades is to remove us. Make no mistake, there are efforts in motion to do just that. However, since our operational budget is not funded by foundation and government funds, it makes it very difficult for those efforts to be successful. In our opinion, the comments made in the Tribune article are yet ANOTHER example of an attempt at revisionist history writing. The purpose is to push a personal agenda to further a clandestine plan to Co-Opt and/or exclude the Black Labor History Story told at the National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum located in Pullman National Monument. This kind of action a primary concern most Blacks have had, and still have, when dealing with the new developments of a National Park in the urban community in this case, specifically, the far south side of Chicago. While Ms. McClure, who presents herself as the spokesperson for the National Park Service (NPS) and the Pullman National Monument (PNM), has an amazing resume and solid track record for project development and Conservation, the history of the Pullman Porters is not on that list, nor her area of expertise.

A. Philip Randolph Pullman Museum We are not a community organization who just so happens to occasionally mention this body of work... we are the National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, scholars, historians, and preservationists who are a recognized authority on this subject matter. We will not sit back and allow revisionist history to occur by people who are simply attempting to “cherry pick” the parts of the story that appeal to their own self-interest... either personal or professional. In the wise, respectful and realistic words of architect Richard Wilson, who so eloquently stated in this article.... “An opportunity we need to work on is elevating that Pullman Porter story,” Wilson said, calling it “this amazing African-American heritage story.” In response to the historically incorrect and irresponsible words quoted by McClure in the Tribune article,

the Pullman Porters did in fact organize largely in Chicago, the location of the largest population of Porters in the country. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters union was a national organization and organizing did take place in several other cities, and New York was one of them. However, it is significant to note that, beginning in the 1920’s in Chicago, the Porters’ earliest organizing efforts were supported by the likes of Mary McDowell, co-founder of Hull House and Ida B. Wells Barnett. In fact, one of the earliest meetings was held at Wells’ home at 3624 South Parkway (now King Drive). That meeting was followed by another important one which was held at the Metropolitan Church, which was renamed as Metropolitan Apostolic Community Church, where Dr. Leon Finney is the pastor. These are not media sound bites, they are facts that just a little research will reveal.

If McClure is not speaking for the NPS, who is she speaking for? Who hired her? What is her scope of work? Who authorized her to speak on behalf of the community? And what is the real agenda for the north end of the Pullman National Monument? Not only is the story of A. Philip Randolph and the Pullman Porters a major focus of our content at the museum, it is a significant piece of Black history, and a labor of love and respect that we have done for two decades, it is your history, let your voices be heard. TRUMPED! America, you have been had. There has been a coup, a revolution of sorts. We have been taken over by reprobates. There are a lot of people who feel that this is the case, and they have taken to the streets by the thousands in cities around the country protesting the results of the November 8, 2016 election. In what has been considered a stunning upset, Hillary Clinton lost her bid for the presidency. Donald Trump is now president–elect! Hillary Clinton actually won the popular vote, but Trump got the Electoral College votes. This is reminiscent of the Bush administration’s usurpation of the presidency when Al Gore actually received more popular votes. But this is a democracy, and we have to play by the rules that have been established. Hillary Clinton gave an excellent concession speech, and President Barack Obama also gave one in which he urged the country to move toward unity and to give Trump a chance. He admitted, however, that he has his concerns. Hindsight seems to reveal a number of things. Apparently, Clinton and the democrats failed to understand the depth of dissatisfaction among certain segments of the population. Trump played to this group, and the rest is history. It is also perplexing to see that Hillary Clinton failed to nail the women’s votes as well as those of Blacks who supported Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. Moreover, millions of Americans didn’t bother to vote. Some think that the Bernie Sanders backers were disgruntled and in retaliation threw their support to Libertarian Gary Johnson or Green Party’s Jill Stein. It is clear that they siphoned off a considerable number of votes that would have gone to the Democratic Party. But all of this is water under the bridge. The country is now faced with a bigger problem. We have elected someone of questionable moral character with zero experience in public office to the most powerful post in the free world. Moreover, he has appointed a Chief of Staff and a Chief Strategist and Advisor both who have zero experience in government. Indiana Governor Mike Pence, who is the Vice President Elect, has been tapped to lead the transition team. Also on this team are the Trump children for whom Trump has asked for top secret security clearance. They are also, however, continuing to run the family business through a so-called “blind trust.” Ominously, the Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus, is set to share “equal power” with the notorious white supremacist and hate merchant, Steve Bannon, the former head of Breitbart. According to those in the know, it is no secret that Bannon espouses a white supremacist philosophy. It has been said that he created, in Breitbart, an online platform for the Alt-Right. The Alt-Right is a code name for white nationalists. These are scary times and this is a scary turn of events. Here we have people leading the most important country in the free world who now have the leeway to carve out life the way they see it. It was apparent even during his campaign that Donald Trump saw himself as the ultimate authority, and based on the way that he is proceeding, he is still that person. News reporters are lamenting the fact that he has refused to return calls to the Pentagon, and has not acted in a traditional manner. He still has not released his tax information, and based on the way that he is connecting his children AND his business with world politics, he has the potential of running a private business with ties around the world. This is unprecedented, and it represents a potential for corruption that is unlike anything we have ever seen. Based on the foregoing, it is certain that America is going to miss the class act that President Barack Obama demonstrated. Those petulant and immature individuals who allowed themselves to be hoodwinked to vote for the charismatic, but character-challenged Trump are, if the current trend continues, in for an experience of Buyer’s Remorse, especially those who are Black or who are members of other minority groups. A luta continua.

The headline read that Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is going to start monthly meetings with Black Lives Matter people. When I actually read the story I learned he is meeting with the youth contingent of BLM. I could not believe my eyes. The story also read that the group leadership was comprised of 16 and 17-year-old girls. First, let me say I applaud their youthful activism and willingness to speak truth to power. No doubt these girls will grow up to be phenomenal leaders. It is equally impressive that they understand and act on the need for strategic movements, as well as organizing spontaneous protests. Given those realities, it is hard to understand why Johnson is not expanding this meeting campaign to include young Black men. In fact, why isn’t Johnson holding regular meetings with the Black community at large? There is no doubt that young Black people have special problems with Chicago police, but I believe that can be said for nearly every Black demographic. By limiting his monthly meetings to teen girls the superintendent missed the boat of

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Again, Eddie Johnson misses the boat Dear Editor:

opportunity again. By holding additional meetings to the ones he is having with the BLM youth, Johnson would be able to hear a plethora of ideas on how to improve police-community relations, from a variety of African American perspectives. There are at least three community organizations working concurrently on police accountability and police reform. Johnson should be meeting with those groups as well. He also should be meeting with every Black resident who feels disrespected or harassed by the police. He needs to be in the community in a real way, not these faux town hall meetings the mayor prefers. By focusing on Black female youth Johnson is ignoring more than 90 percent of the city’s Black population. This majority segment also has tremendous problems with CPD. Without a doubt Johnson has to see that, but the big question is why is he ignoring it. The population beyond the Black females is the proverbial elephant in the room. When we stop and think about it though, this is probably the mayor’s plan. He moves Johnson to have ongoing meetings with these young ladies and from now on in his speeches to Black people Rahm will be saying “we are meeting regularly with Black Lives Matter…” Like so much of what the mayor provides, the unsuspecting will only be getting half the story. It seems to me it is time that every

group in the city that has a policing or police issue should demand a series of meetings with Johnson. If he turns you down it is a clear message that he is not, and the mayor is not, interested in better communitypolice relationships. Patti Stovall

2016 Election – What Happened Along the Way Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Oh! Yes, it seemed to have shocked them by the millions. The Obama “Mojo” is no longer good. The young light skinned skinny guy with the Muslim name is becoming a “memory” now. He did not have to make it so. But for some reason he wanted to get in this 2016 presidential election. He pled to people who were admiring him as something spiritual. But he was certainly not spiritual. He was Obama! The first Black president of the United States. That historical event crept up on us and to the millions of Americans who idolized the very thought of his existence he must never go away. He would go to foreign nations and hundreds of thousands of people would come out just to hear his voice. It didn’t matter what he was saying, just that he was saying it to them. Many could not understand English but they knew he had African blood and that was good enough. In Kenya, teens would line up to buy the soft drink, “OBAMA – The President’s Drink!” It lasted

for a while but the reality of him being a mere human being started to sink in on all the temporary idol worshipers, slowly but surely. The few African Americans that study political leaders seemed to give him a pass at each social incident. He didn’t take his family to worship anymore. Before he was attending a “sure enough” Black church on the South Side of Chicago. I can’t over emphasize the historical highlight of his becoming an American President. In Nairobi, Kenya there was a well-established political joke: “A Luo (a secondary Tribe in Kenya) will become president of the United States before a Luo will be President of Kenya.” That joke is no longer funny. At first not only would 98 percent of Blacks support President Obama on any issue, they would consider dying for him just to get his point across. But as his Saul Alinsky style of politics became evident, more and more who idolized him became fewer and fewer. President Obama was a nouveau radical. That is not real Americana but somehow he managed to keep the admiration of progressives and radicals at the same time while not of-

Harry C. Alford fending mainstream America. I remember him throwing out the “traditional first pitch” at a major league all-star game. It was so awful and I thought to myself: “This guy has never played baseball. That is so strange and not real Americana.” One thing I noticed about our President – he has thin skin. He gets very upset when people criti-

cize him about anything. Not too long ago, the Congressional Black Caucus requested a meeting with him to talk about some hiring issues. He later lambasted them at the following Congressional Black Caucus annual event. “Stop complaining!” He screamed at them. Too sensitive to be a prudent judge nor a level headed political official. All the charismatic descriptions that he once held were fading away. The 2016 election was more than party loyalty to our President; it would be the protection of his legacy. If the Democratic Party were to lose, it would be on him. So, he made a dangerous decision: He would actively join the Clintons in their quest for the presidency. It was a terrible mistake. Most of us have had enough with the Clintons – especially Hillary. He was going to embrace all their funky baggage for him to say nice things about them. The scandals, in effect, felonies for common persons will now be recognized as truthful and worthy of taking note. He put his name on them and that did not uplift the DNC chance for the White House. In the end, it put his past performance into the same mud pit.

Slowly but surely the various segments of American Voters started to slowly back away. The deeper the scandals got, the least likely his embrace of the Clinton candidacy would sell to the voters. White males, white females, Hispanics, Asians and even Blacks started to pull out of the Clinton mystique and even the Obama mojo. My mother would say, “If you play in dirt, it will eventually get in your eyes.” That is it. He could not see the filth he was associating with and his judgement became impaired. Barack Hussein Obama started to slowly slide from his “Throne.” It lessened him in front of all to see. His failed deeds – Obama Care, IRS Scandals, VA Scandals, unemployment failures, Hillary’s sleazy past and Bill’s legendary libido. He put his legacy on the line playing with those dirty doers. It got in his eyes. History will give the final report. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Mortgage officials sentenced to federal prison and fined for fraud By Charlene Crowell Perpetrators in a mortgage fraud scheme that targeted Black consumers in the Los Angeles area have been sentenced to federal prison and fined. On October 24, United States District Judge S. James Otero sentenced Paul Ryan, a former mortgage loan officer, and mortgage broker Chester Peggese, for illegal activities that operated from early 2007 until March, 2010. The sentencing concludes a multiagency investigation that combined efforts and resources from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division, Office of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP), and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Office of Inspector General. As a result of his conviction Peggese was ordered to pay $4.2 million in restitution to Broadway Federal Bank and serve one year and one day in federal prison. Ryan will pay $353,925 in restitution to Broadway Federal Bank and serve 18 months. Two years ago, Ryan pleaded guilty to one count of receiving bribes and rewards as a bank employee. According to court documents, Peggese acted as a “consultant” who targeted Los Angeles-area churches with promises of new mortgages to purchase property or refinanced

mortgages from Broadway Federal Bank. Between 2007 and 2009, Peggese met with representatives of churches and obtained financial information required for the loan applications. Others involved manipulated financial information to make it appear the churches were more financially sound than they actually were. Peggese caused these false loan applications to be submitted to Broadway Federal Bank. During the time that Ryan worked as a loan officer, Broadway Federal Bank paid rebates to brokers who brought loan applications to the bank. Ryan also “demanded from the brokers that all or part of that rebate amount be paid to him...intending to be rewarded and influenced in his processing and approval of these church loans,” according to the sentencing memorandum filed with the court. Ryan worked with brokers and provided a template for presenting financial information for the churches that ensured the loan applications would be approved. Based on the false information concerning the financial status of the churches, Broadway Federal Bank issued loans to the churches. “This bank insider accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in a scheme that led his employer to suffer millions of dollars in losses,” said United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker. “After investigators began

www.chicagocrusader.coM

looking into the scheme, Ryan encouraged another bank employee to lie about the fraudulent loan applications, which further complicated but did not deter this investigation.” “Banker Paul Ryan abused his position of trust and caused losses at TARP recipient Broadway Federal Bank by knowingly allowing borrowers to use inflated financial information in loan applications,” said Christy Goldsmith Romero, Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP). “In this mortgage scheme aimed at predominately African-American churches, he demanded more than $350,000 in bribes from brokers,” continued Goldsmith Romero. “When investigators closed in Ryan tried to cover up his crimes by telling a conspirator to lie on his behalf. Broadway Federal, which received and has not yet paid back $15 million in TARP funds, suffered more than $5 million in losses as a result of this scheme. SIGTARP stands united with our law enforcement partners to bring justice to bank officials and their conspirators who commit crime.” With all due respect to participating law enforcement officials, Black America is also due its fair share of financial justice too. Across a range of financial markets and predatory products designed to rob families of their earnings, mortgage fraud has the largest effect on our quality of life and our ability to build wealth. This recent case of mortgage fraud

Charlene Crowell illustrates the inequities that Black California consumers and others across the country continue to face. Recent research on mortgage lending in California by the Center for Responsible Lending revealed even more financial obstacles: • Nearly half – 49 percent — of Black borrowers had incomes greater than 120 percent of their area median

income or AMI; • Black borrowers received approximately 3 percent of home purchase loans in California that were first-lien and owner-occupied; and • From 2001-2012, the number of home purchase loans dropped 54 percent. “The communities that lack access to mortgages post-crisis are the very same communities that were disproportionately affected by foreclosures and lost wealth during the housing crisis,” said Sarah Wolff, senior CRL researcher and the report’s author. Mortgage fraud only worsens an already disheartening Black experience in seeking the ‘American Dream’. The strong likelihood is that this same scenario is repeated across the country with other consumers of color. And so — our collective struggle for financial justice must continue. spires African youth in America to understand that the purpose of education is to develop the skills and historical understanding of the past, as it relates to the present and future, in preparation for working for self and the liberation of African people. This is the challenge of the twentyfirst-century, to defeat the hundred year old tradition established by white educational leaders, who created curriculums for Africans in America designed to prepare them to work for white folks. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who founded in February of 1926, what at the time was called “Negro History Week,” would indeed be inspired by the continuing discussion and debate over the contributions of African people to the history of the world. That movement, an ongoing interest in Negro history and culture led by Dr. Woodson, helped lay the foundation for the current African Centered Education Movement. The aforementioned movement has Dr. Conrad Worrill become the catalyst for the intense It is very important for African peo- study of Africa and the history of ple in America to educate and reedu- African people throughout the cate ourselves about our history and world, 365 days a year. African people in America, to educate and reeducate ourselves about our history and its relationship to the important ideas that shape how we see the world. We must continue this effort to educate ourselves beyond African American History Month, and carry it into the rest of the year. For over thirty-five-years, Dr. Carruthers played a leading role as a scholar and intellectual activist in the development of the African Centered Education Movement. Dr. Carruthers was a tenured professor at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, Illinois in the College of Education’s Inner City Studies Education undergraduate and graduate programs, and retired as Professor Emeritus. Along with Dr. Anderson Thompson, Dr. Carruthers helped shape both the undergraduate and graduate curricula that have become known throughout the country for providing a theoretical and practical understanding of the impact of the political, economic, social, and cultural forces on people who live in the inner cities throughout the world. Of course, one of the largest groups living in the inner cities is African people. A great deal of Dr. Carruthers’ writings and lectures concentrated on the white supremist’s intellectual

assault on African people and the world. Dr. Carruthers was magnificent in exposing the European intellectual tyranny and its impact on the education of African people. It was his association with the late, great Senegalese scholar, Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop and the late, great scholar /teacher, Dr. John Henrik Clarke that helped propel the genius of Dr. Carruthers’ insight into the “Deep Well” of the African Worldview. As the founding President of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), Dr. Carruthers helped shape an organizational format for African Centered scholars, teachers, students, and the overall African Community. He presented a collective vehicle in which to pursue the building of the African Centered Education Movement. His leadership in this regard has been monumental and inspiring to hundreds of scholars, teachers, and students throughout the African World Community. In this connection, Dr. Carruthers’ book, Intellectual Warfare, prepares us to function in the twenty-firstcentury with a sharper understanding of our challenges as an African people. The book is organized into five sections. Part I: The Nature of the War;

Part II: Defenders of Western Civilization; Part III: Intellectual Civil War; Part IV: The Champions of African Centered Thought; and Part V: Toward the Restoration of African Civilizations. In the preface of Intellectual Warfare, Dr. Carruthers explains, “These essays reflect the thought of the ‘Chicago group’ and the ‘African Community of Chicago.’ I was simply a vehicle through whom ideas flowed. Even the mistakes are our mistakes rather than mine alone. The conceptualization of our work as Intellectual Warfare emerged out of the actual battles in which we were engaged.” In the first chapter, Dr. Carruthers instructs us by pointing out, “Thus, those who have been waging the long war to liberate African history and culture have been fighting the following two battles: (1) an international war against the European intellectuals and (2) a civil war against the colonized African spokespersons who are trained by Europeans to undermine African independence. The war is truly, as Anderson Thompson says, a battle for the African mind, or as Asa Hilliard and the First World Alliance put it, a battle to free the African mind.” (Continued on page 7)

TRUMP WINS FOR WHITE AMERICA By Julianne Malveaux I began election night with exuberance. I was among the many who forecast a Hillary win. The only disagreement among my circle of friends was how big the Hillary rout would be. I thought she’d get at least 300 electoral votes, and hoped that she’d thump Trump by getting as many as 340, holding him to less than 200 votes. The tables were turned and Trump was the one doing the thumping, with the electoral vote count estimated to be 306232. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, garnering around 400,000 more votes than Donald Trump. White folks won the day for Trump in an amazing show of white solidarity. Trump took 58 percent of the white vote, but did not get a majority vote from any other racial/ethnic group. Only eight percent of African Americans voted for Trump. He did better among Asian Americans (29 percent) and Hispanics (30 percent). White people repudiated Hillary Clinton and embraced Trump, despite his racist, misogynistic, and jingoistic rhetoric, as one of their own. Hillary Clinton counted on 6

white women, especially college-educated white women, to save the day for her. But Trump won 53 percent of the white female vote. He won 45 percent of the college-educated white women’s vote, losing that vote to Hillary Clinton by just 6 percentage points. Sixty-two percent of white women who didn’t go to college voted for Trump, while just 34 percent voted for Clinton. College educated white women’s narrow vote for Clinton did not overcome the overwhelming support other whites gave Trump. White women valued culture and class over gender. Many of them are the mothers, daughters, sisters or wives of the white men who gave Trump 63 percent of their vote. Hillary Clinton failed to energize the base, or transcend the indifference that too many voters felt for her. Turnout was only 56.8 percent, just one percent higher than 2012, and lower than the 58.2 percent turnout in 2008. More than 95 million people who were eligible to vote failed to do so. The Republican vote was similar for Trump and for Mitt Romney, the last Republican Presidential nominee. Democrats turned out in much lower numbers for Clinton than they did for Obama. Why? Voter suppression is part of the an-

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2016

Dr. Julianne Malveaux swer. There were nearly 900 fewer voting places in 2016 than in 2012. Further, states like Wisconsin, which Hillary lost by less than a percentage point, introduced new voter ID laws between 2012 and 2016. Clinton lost by less than 2 percent of the vote in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Florida. People of color were more likely to be affected by voter suppression measures than whites. In Durham, North Carolina, voting machines weren’t working, and a judge ruled to keep the polls open longer to compensate for the broken machines. Clinton lost North Carolina

by less than 4 percent. How many more might have voted but for broken machines and other chicanery? How many spent hours in line, and how many had to leave lines because they had to go to work? Hillary Clinton ended her campaign with more than $50 million in the bank! Might some of that money have made a difference in energizing the base? Could more people have been put on payroll as organizers in battleground states, especially North Carolina and Pennsylvania? Should grass-roots organizers have received more resources? Lots of fingers can be pointed in this post-election analysis, but analysis notwithstanding, Trump won. It hurts to write that reality down, but it is a reality we will all have to grapple with for four years. Part of the ugly reality is the realization that too many of our fellow citizens have embraced a racially divisive candidate whose rhetoric has unleashed hateful speech and attitudes. The Detroit News reported that students in Oakland, Michigan blocked pathways of Latino students coming to school, shouting, “build the wall.” These children are emulating their elders, including the “President-elect.” The nonpartisan education news website, the74million.org, has reported that “elec-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

tion-related” school violence is on the rise in the wake of the Trump victory. Donald Trump was able to tap into the angst that too many whites felt during the Obama presidency, and win the Presidency in the name of white solidarity and white supremacy. It seems incongruous that a rich, privileged, urban businessman should become the voice of the working class disgruntled, the rural neglected (Trump got 62 percent of the rural vote), and white women. But this is the new reality, the triumph of white privilege and hate rhetoric. Whites are just 40 percent of the population in California, a state that gave Hillary Clinton 61.5 percent of its vote. And the Census reports that by 2044 there will be no majority group in our nation. White folks might as well enjoy Trump while they can but time, and demographics, are on our side. White supremacy will not reign forever. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? TRYING TO GET OVER IT!! Ima is still trying to get over the election! It has really been hard to imagine that there are so many undercover racists in this country, but the results are what they are. So ‘cuse me this week for being so brief. I called the boss and asked to be off this week, but I couldn’t let this issue come out and not talk about that demented mayor that was so happy to have a new first lady in the White House. She had to resign after making the statement, she was a West Virginia Mayor. Here’s what she had to say: “It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, digni-

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama Now I may disagree with the President and some of the things he did over eight years, but one thing is for sure he made the right decision to marry Michele Obama. She’s smart, articulate, and makes a fashion statement like no

other First Lady of late. But then again we wonder what this West Virginia coal mine mayor wears? I haven’t heard of anything fashionable coming out of that state EVER!! She probably looks like a pig with lipstick on!!! Another word if her definition of what a classy First Lady wears, Ima wonders if it includes what she does not wear? WE hear she has shown it all in the buff. What kind of class is that???Now Ima is mad as hell!!!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Trump should not be the focus Dear Editor: From all appearances, it looks as though it is pretty easy to get caught up in bashing Donald Trump, or guessing what he will do once he takes office. Right now, both seem to be a sport locally and across the country. Here in Chicago that game is a luxury we cannot afford, Unless there is some sort of personal disaster Trump will take office in about 60 days. Talking about his wife, his hair or his dull-witted children or protesting will change that. All of the marching along N. Michigan Avenue is not going to get him un-elected. Right now, in my opinion, Black Chicagoans need to focus on getting our house in order. I don’t

know about anyone else but I was really embarrassed when I read that a Black woman who was not eligible to be a judge was elected to the bench on November 8. It wasn’t white people who voted her in either. The story about her playing judge and being disciplined for it was all over the news for weeks, but we ignored it. To make the situation worse, another Black woman who was immensely qualified didn’t get enough votes because she had to run as a write-in. Why aren’t there protests to get the write-in candidate seated? A judge has a much greater impact on our day-to-day lives than the president, Think about it. While folks focus on Trump, our school district is trying to borrow more money on top of the $7 billion debt they are already holding. Why aren’t people protesting that financial burden and the fact we have not had a permanent superintendent in more than one year? Our children are in a huge predicament because the debt, the borrowing and the overall lack of confidence in the board and the interim superintendent make for an enormously questionable future. Marching for a solution to this school district mess is what people need to be doing, at least in my opinion. Look, there are enough pissed off people around the country regarding Trump’s election. So, it looks like

to me, we can back off of joining them and try to get our own house in order. Instead of protesting, why aren’t folks organizing to support candidates for the next city council elections. It is an open secret we probably have not only the largest council in the country, but also the biggest do-nothing council in the country. The protests ought to be about how the 17 Black council members are a caucus in name only. We should be protesting how so many of them have been bought off by the mayor. When he buys them, the Judases agree not to rock the boat. That translates into not pushing for more economic development in our community, not demanding schools equivalent to the ones North siders send their children to, and not demanding we get more city jobs and contracts. Resolving all of those things will make our community better. Protesting about Trump’s election will get you some wornout shoes. As Black people we need to realign our priorities and make them about improving where we live, not being mad because white people are mad. Black people got a million problems, and Donald Trump is just one of them, and should be way down on the list. Trevor Spells

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Never have I been more proud to be a Black woman than after learning the demographic breakdown of last week’s presidential election. Black women without a college degree, voted for Hillary Clinton 91 percent. Black women with a college degree voted for the first woman presidential nominee, 96 percent. Traditionally, Black women are very independent thinking and don’t look to their fathers, husbands or boyfriends for how to think about their own self-interests. White women’s support on Election Day for Republican nominee Donald Trump was 53 percent, compared with 63 percent of white men. Overwhelmingly, 72 percent of white men without a college degree voted for Trump. African American men voted for Clinton at 80 percent and 13 percent for Trump. As one electoral analyst said, “These white men and women voted like a minority group, coalescing on a mission to put him in the White House.” Clearly, they took a page from us in 2008 and 2012. Black women were just as focused about the country they want for future generations, as Trump’s supporters were about the America they remember, which is nothing new. It’s what Black women do—put family and country first. We don’t posture and pretend to know everything. We don’t look to criticize every little thing to prove why someone doesn’t deserve our support. Believe me, Hillary Clinton’s campaign wasn’t perfect. I certainly had my complaints. It was data driven and light on grassroots. It was big donor reliant and light on small fundraisers. It was too stealth and not public enough. None of that was enough for me not to support Clinton. Donald Trump’s campaign wasn’t perfect either. He called Mexicans “rapists” in his announcement speech. He said John McCain wasn’t a war hero because he was captured. He inferred a woman anchor was hormonal, because she asked him hard questions. He mocked a disabled reporter. He said veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder were weak. He said being a celebrity gave him permission to grab a woman’s pussy and shove his tongue down her throat. He didn’t release his tax returns. He told one bald face lie after another throughout the entire campaign. He’s currently awaiting trial in a class action lawsuit against Trump University. He can’t control his temper. He lost three presidential debates to a woman. One of his top advisors is considered a champion of white nationalism. It was re-

vealed he mishandled monies donated to his foundation. It didn’t matter. Trump’s voters were going to vote for him regardless. As the New York billionaire exclaimed in January, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters.” In an interview with a Wisconsin newspaper, a one small shop owner in Menomonie, Wisconsin shared, “When Trump first ran, Shay Chamberlain thought to herself: “That’s the man everybody has been praying for.” And she now feels vindicated by his victory. “This is a movement,” she said. “This isn’t a candidate anymore. This is a movement.” Meanwhile, Black people complained Clinton didn’t talk enough about our issues. White people believed she embraced Black people too much throughout the campaign. Ironically, Black people didn’t want presidential candidate Barack Obama to talk about any issues. I remember one well-respected minister, who has since died, telling me outside the Denver Convention Center in 2008, “Oh, Barack can’t talk about any issues or he won’t get elected.” I never thought it was a foregone conclusion that Clinton would become our nation’s first woman president. I hoped that she would crush the reality star, but my fear was that it would be a close election. Her biggest flaw was being a woman. Had Clinton been a man, she could’ve gotten away with the same outrageous, boorish behavior as Trump. Clinton wasn’t only running against Trump, she was running against centuries of sexism. She was running against the media who perceived her as arrogant and aloof. She was running against WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange. She was running against Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the end, she was running against FBI Director James Comey. Although, Comey didn’t find the evidence to indict Clinton for use of a private email server while secretary of state, his behavior was unprecedented. From the July news conference he held to brandish Clinton’s handling of emails as “extremely careless” to the letter sent to Congress reopening the case against her 11 days before the election, Comey’s conduct was attention grabbing. Despite a long-held tradition to refrain from doing anything that might influence the outcome of a presidential election, Comey inserted doubt into the final days of the campaign by inferring additional information might be in the 650,000 new emails found on a laptop belonging to An(Continued on page 14)

Half of all opening day sales to benefit Teamwork Englewood Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its first restaurant in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago (806 W. 63rd St.) on Tuesday, Nov. 15. The restaurant is part of the Englewood Square project and is open alongside a new Whole Foods Market and Starbucks. The Englewood Square project is a new retail development that opened on September 28 with two of the three anchor tenants—Whole Foods and Starbucks. Now Chipotle Mexican Grill joins the other national retail brands on this historic site of a once thriving commerce center. Developed by DL3 Realty with the use of all African American-owned contractors, Englewood Square marks the beginning of revitalization in the Englewood community. “Today is another grand day in Englewood. The new retailer Chipotle Mexican Grill is another step in the right direction for greater shopping experiences and job opportunities for the Englewood community. CUL students spend Veteran’s Day helping others Students volunteered their time at the Chicago Urban League prepping water bottles for Flint, Michigan residents Two months ago, the Chicago Urban League’s Human Capital Division launched a water collection drive for the residents of Flint, Michigan. The initiative was the idea of one of the students enrolled in the League’s Human Capital Program and is categorized as a project through the National Urban League’s Project Ready Program. After collecting more than 600 cases of water, the students spent

Veteran’s Day at the Chicago Urban League packing the water up for shipment to Flint on Monday. The water, along with filters, lotion and monetary contributions, will be delivered to Asbury United Methodist Church. “Our students set a goal to collect water and went above and beyond their expectations,” said Angela Hamilton, Director of Human Capital at the Chicago Urban League. “It’s a great way for them to spend Veteran’s Day continuing their service to others.” CUL staff and students plan to visit the church and meet congregation members in December.

WORKING FROM THE Chicago Urban League’s office, student volunteers joined in wrapping large pallets of water for shipment to residents in Flint, Michigan. The students exceeded the goals they set for the amount of water they would collect. 10

Urban League attracts Diana Ross and sold-out dinner By Glenn Reedus Mix 100 years of activism, a vibrant Black Chicago community, a commitment to empower and improve that community and the final product is the Chicago Urban League’s Golden Fellowship Centennial Edition Fellowship Dinner. The dinner, the League’s 55th black tie celebration, features Diana Ross as the entertainment, and will honor longtime Chicago businessman Spencer Leak, Sr., on Saturday, Nov. 19. According to Chelsea Whittington, the League’s senior manager of external affairs, there are three primary reasons this year’s gala is the first time the event has been completely sold out. About 1,700 business and community leaders, community activists, and long time supporters of the League will come together at the Hilton Chicago to observe the League’s 100th year in business. Whittington surmised the popularity of this year’s gala titled “Building on Our Legacy,” is a mixture of Ross performing, the community work the League does, and the fact it is the centennial observance. “Even when we were preparing for last year’s gala, there were organizations saying they wanted to wait and be a part of the centennial, and some that committed to contribute more to the centennial than they did last year, as well as some who said, this is your 100th year. I have to be part of that.” Tawanna Streater, the League’s director of development, said, “the success of the Golden Fellowship Dinner

would not be possible without the consistent support of our sponsors, board members, staff, volunteers and all who have a vested interest in making Chicago better.” “As we move into our next century of service, we are even more committed to building on our legacy and will continue to effect real change in the lives of the people we serve.” Whittington said the money raised from the gala will be used to support many of the League’s programs, as well as cover some operating expenses. While the organization was established 100 years ago to primarily help African Americans moving from the south to the north in finding jobs, housing and other necessities, the mission has not changed that much. Whittington explained “when someone comes

through our door and says I need help finding a job, or I need help with housing, or buying my first home, we are essentially doing the same thing we did 100 years ago. We are just helping in a different way.” Urban League President and CEO Shari Runner will detail where the League is headed at the dinner. Whittington added, “today we have even more services and can help in more ways.” She cited the League’s interest in advancing educational opportunities for students and adults. One such student is currently a freshman at Indianapolis University, Jamarcus Walker, a Chicagoan who participated in several Chicago Urban League programs, amassed $500,000 in scholarship offers from colleges and universities across the country. “He could have

Diana Ross

Spencer Leak Sr. gone to just about any university, but he chose Indianapolis University because his father passed recently and he wanted to be able to be home quickly to visit his mother,” Whittington explained. Young Walker will be featured in a video that will be shown at the gala. He plans to major in and ultimately teach theology at the college level. Spencer Leak, Sr., a name familiar to many Chicagoans, especially those on the South Side, will receive the League’s Edwin C. (Bill) Berry Civil Rights Award. It is the highest recognition the league bestows on a community leader. Leak, owner of Leak and Sons Funeral Homes, has a history of activism that dates back to the Civil Rights Movement. He and his father were among the many Chicagoans who marched to desegregate Oakwood Cemetery in the 1960s. Leak’s father was a close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Leak Funeral Home company is

among the oldest in Chicago, having opened in 1933. Leak also has served as the Consumer Affairs Chief for the Office of the Illinois Attorney General, Executive Director of Cook County Department of Corrections and Commissioner of the Illinois Human Rights Commission. William C. (Bill) Berry, was an icon in the Civil Rights Movement, and directed the Chicago Urban League from 1956-1969. The honor bearing his name also has been bestowed on noted Chicago historian, activist, and philanthropist Timuel Black, legendary opera diva Jessye Norman, civil rights activists Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., Rev. Willie T. Barrow, Hank R. Schwab, and Rev. Addie L. Wyatt, also legendary actors Louis Gossett, Jr., Phylicia Rashad and Cicely Tyson, as well as James W. Compton, president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League from 1972-2006.

DENZEL WASHINGTON BRINGS AUGUST WILSON’S BRILLIANCE TO BIG SCREEN By Raymond Ward MUSICAL TRIBUTE: New Orleans legend and cultural icon Dr. John makes his Symphony Center Presents (SCP) Jazz series debut on Friday, November 18th at 8:00 PM with a program entitled “The Spirit of Satch.” This musical tribute celebrates legendary Center City trumpeter and vocalist Louis Armstrong and features Dr. John on vocals and piano, fellow New Orleans native Nicholas Payton on trumpet and Musical Director Sarah Morrow on trombone. Dr. John was inspired to record 2014’s critically acclaimed Ske-DatDe-Dat: The Spirit of Satch when Louis Armstrong—aka Satch or Satchmo—came to him in a dream and told him: “Do my music, your way.” Co-produced and arranged by Dr. John’s Musical Director Sarah Morrow, the recording featured 13 quintessential Armstrong hits and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz Chart. The fresh arrangements of Armstrong songs including “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “Sweet Hunk O’Trash,” “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” and more extend to a live show with Dr. John, Morrow and Payton are joined by a horn section of Chicago-based musicians.

Dr. John Dr. John is a six-time Grammy Award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Known throughout the world as the embodiment of New Orleans music, Dr. John’s career began in the 1950’s when he wrote and played on some of the greatest records to come out of his home town, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. He headed to Los Angeles in the 1960’s as a session musician, playing on albums by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones. During that time he launched his solo career, developing the mystical persona of Dr. John, The Night Tripper. His 1968 album Gris-Gris introduced his blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues and psychedelic rock mingled with his New Orleans roots. Multi-instrumentalist and trumpet master Nicholas Payton was hailed a virtuoso before he finished high school. A New Orleans native, Payton made his major-recording debut as a leader with From This Moment (Verve). After ten major label albums Payton began recording on his own imprint, Paytone Records. His recording Sketches of Spain features a live concert performance of the iconic Miles Davis-Gil Evans collaboration and was dubbed one of the best albums of 2013 by the Chicago Tribune. Payton spans a multitude of musical genres having composed and arranged, performed and recorded with his own groups in many settings, including solo, duo, trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, 21-piece big band, as well as full orchestra in his 2012 composition, The Black American Symphony. Tickets for all Symphony Center Presents Jazz series concerts can be purchased by telephone at 800-223-7114 or 312-294-3000; online at cso, org, or at the Symphony Center box office, 220 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Award-winning actor Denzel Washington is behind a new initiative to bring late playwright August Wilson’s work to the big screen, while spearheading a campaign to strengthen family relationships within the Black community. Wilson’s play Fences has been made into a movie, with many of the original actors from the Broadway production playing their respective parts. Fences written in 1983 by Wilson, is set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It is the sixth play in Wilson’s ten-part “Pittsburgh Cycle” that explores the Black experience, while examining race relations, among other themes. The plot centers around Washington, in the role of a former baseball player named Troy Maxson. Maxson creates tension in his family when he denies his teenage son’s dream of playing college football and comes home with the baby he had through an affair. The teenage son, Corey, is played by Jovan Adepo, Maxson’s wife Rose is played by Viola Davis. Other actors include Mykelti Williamson, Russell Hornsby and Stephen Henderson in their respective Broadway roles. The movie opens nationwide on Christmas Day, December 25. The unique aspect of the widely anticipated Paramount film is that Washington and collaborators are launching the “Across the Fence: Telling our Stories and Building Strong Bonds” initiative. The team’s intent is to provide families an opportunity to upload video tributes to relatives who have passed away, or to living relatives. The premise is that there may have been a “fence” between one or more family members. The video tributes allow families to share openly, sentiments that may long have been silent. Press materials for the website for “Across the Fence” (www.acrossthefence.co) offer thought provoking questions: What if families used this

Reverend Otis Moss of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, also spoke during the call and voiced his admiration for playwright Wilson. “I am a huge fan of August Wilson. He has shifted and changed my theology. Along with Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston and others, he used the Blues in a special way to mark memory and hope for African Americans.” Moss added that “Fences is about a man placing a (Continued on page 13)

Unpacking Collections: The Legacy of Cuesta Benberry to Open at the DuSable Museum of African American History The highly acclaimed exhibition Unpacking Collections: The Legacy of Cuesta Benberry, an African American Quilt Scholar opened at the DuSable Museum of African American History, on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 and continues through March of 2017. The Museum is located at 740 East 56th Place (57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Chicago. Unpacking Collections: The Legacy of Cuesta Benberry, an African American Quilt Scholar explores the production and meaning of collecting through this collection, acquired by the Michigan State University Museum. The traveling exhibit showcases the textile collections of the late Cuesta Benberry, one of the twentieth-century’s pioneers of research on American quilt making, and a forerunner in research on African American quiltmaking. Several dozen quilts are included in the exhibit in addition to an interactive children’s area, and books, video, and collectables on quilting. Historically prominent quilt makers featured include: Carole Harris, Hazel Carter, Fanny Cork, Minnie Benberry, Faith Ringgold, and the Gees Bend Freedom’s Quilting Bee to name a few. Also included is a quilt created in 1876 by Mary Stanford. “Every collection reflects a point of view, a passion, a mindful purpose of the collector who made it,” explains Marsha MacDowell, MSU Museum curator of Folk Arts and MSU professor of Art and Art history. “In literally unpacking a scholar’s collection, a museum or an archive has a responsibility to care for, research, interpret, and make accessible the contents of the collection. It is when a collection—its parts and its whole—is figuratively unpacked, that we can learn more about the scholar and the subjects they researched.” “Unpacking Collections: The Legacy of Cuesta Benberry, an African

American Quilt Scholar celebrates one of the nation’s preeminent scholars and archivists of African American quilts. This quilt exhibit of her own personal collection of quilts and artifacts is not only historically significant, it is also visually stunning,” said Leslie Guy, Chief Curator, DuSable Museum. Benberry had a long association with the MSU Museum, the home of the Great Lakes Quilt Center, and when she passed away in 2007 her family gave the Michigan State University Museum her collection of African and African American quilts and her quilt history. In 2009, the American Folk Art Museum in New York City transferred its Benberry Collection to the MSU Museum so that the bulk of her work could be in one place where it could be more effectively accessed for research and educational uses. “We are excited to bring and present this unique and groundbreaking exhibit to the DuSable. It represents our forward-looking vision for the Museum, and in turn celebrates our

Asked if he had made many changes to the original play, Washington said: “The most important thing was to stay out of the way. Don’t try to fix it; the only way to know if it transfers is to do it. You really don’t know until you get it in front of an audience, and we have had tremendous response from the test audiences.” Barbara Williams-Skinner, formerly Executive Director of the Congressional Black Caucus, and a conference call participant, was grateful to see Fences on Broadway. “I never knew my father, and when he died, there were so many things that I wanted to say to him,” she

said. “I will be writing a letter to my father. We need to tell our stories, our beauty and our challenges. That is what Fences does, and there is nothing more exciting than this campaign.” Other partners in the “Across the Fence” initiative include Tim King of Chicago’s Urban Prep Academy; Boys and Girls Clubs of America; Values Partnerships; Fathers Incorporated; Morehouse College; Howard University; and Campaign for Black Male Achievement, among others. Black women helped six other Democratic women of color make history: Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth of Illinois became the second Asian-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Nevada’s former Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto is the first Latina elected a U.S. Senator. California Attorney General Kamala Harris becomes the second African American woman to gain entry to the U.S. Senate. Activist Pramila Jayapal of Washington state is making history as the first Indian-American woman elected

to the House of Representatives. The daughter of Vietnamese refugees, Stephanie Murphy of Florida, is the first Vietnamese-America woman elected to Congress. On a local level, the first SomaliAmerican Muslim woman, Ilhan Omar, won a seat in the Minnesota state legislature. Black women seldom get the recognition and respect we deserve for our unwavering focus to put family and country first. On November 8, 2016, we did it again with very little fanfare and no regret.

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking Yes You Can. Ironically, this phrase was similar to the Yes We Can campaign slogan used by then Presidential Candidate Barack Obama in 2008. Fast-forward, 7 ½ years later and the country has just experienced the most bizarre and highly charged presidential campaign resulting in Donald Trump as President Elect. Who would have ever thought that this would be our lot? Protests have occurred daily in various cities because people cannot believe nearly 56 million Americans actually voted for someone who has been accused of hate mongering, rape, bad temperament, endorsed by the KKK, an adulterer and has at least three baby momas. The real estate mogul and former Host of NBC’s The Apprentice will now make major decisions affecting the world from the Oval Office for the next four years. Analysts have said many viewed Donald as an experimental medicine—people were so sick and tired of the status quo that they were willing to try anything. You just gotta’ think—surely God

Effie Rolfe has a sense of humor. Yet in His infinite omniscience, while the world watched all night, God already knew the 2016 election results from the beginning of time. Regardless of your

lack of experience or support you have to believe in your own abilities. I’ve got a message for you, if Donald Trump can do it—anybody can. No limits. So what? You say you don’t know how or have the experience? You have a record and your past is not so squeaky clean? It doesn’t matter— realize your dream. You can still do whatever you set your mind to do. Believe that you can do all things through Christ that strengthens you (Philippians 4:13). As we move swiftly into the holidays and through the last quarter of 2016, we must stop waiting for the ‘ideal time.’ It does not exist! So often, waiting for the perfect situation only prolongs one from making the necessary steps to accomplish goals and desires. I believe the underlying reason that people wait before initiating a task is the fear of the unknown. Most people would rather live in a known hell rather than experience an unknown heaven. Not only is it common to have fear, but also, it’s good to have fear in that it causes an adrenalin rush to get the job done. So feel the fear

The Crusader Gospel Corner Independent artist, Amos Greer, fortified with treasured memories from a childhood enriched by service in the house of the Lord gets help from Chicago’s Donald Buster Woods, Pastor DeAndre Patterson, Pastor Angela Spivey, Malcolm Will- iams and the Gospel Music According to Chicago (GMAC) Mass Choir to share My Journey, his debut solo CD project. The Chicago native was nurtured in the Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, where his father served as a deacon. It was there that he gained an appreciation and deep reverence for the hymns of the church. Today, Greer can be found leading worship on Sundays as part of the Trinity United Church of Christ praise team and male

hymns of our fathers and their generation. Songs like ‘Oh How I Love Jesus’ and ‘It Is Well’ help us to preserve history and share the message with others.” Greer relies on the production expertise of Donald Buster Woods and together, they blend a little of the old with the new in energetic contemporary musical creations. Pastor DeAndre Patterson joins Greer for a 2016 rendering of the ever popular “I don’t know what you come to do” praise chant under the title, “Just That Good.” Greer shares vocal adlibs with Malcolm Williams on the Williams’ penned composition “Joy.” The GMAC Choir joins Greer for a rousing tribute to Dr. LouDella Evans Reid on the standard “It Is Well.” “My Journey” is available on all digital outlets now. *** Recently, Miss Robbie Montgomery, popular host of OWN’s “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s” self-made millionaire and restaurateur was in Chicago. A former background singer for Ike and Tina Turner, Miss Robbie was born in Mississippi and moved to St. Louis when she was 6. Her Mississippi roots inspire her cuisine. With the help of her son Tim, she has expanded her food empire to include three locations (the newest one opened months ago in North Hollywood Los Angeles and a line of sweet tea beverages. Her cookbook contains recipes such as Candied Carrot Soufflé, Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Garlic and Bacon, Oniony Roasted Corn, and Collard Greens. She wanted to do the book because she is concerned that the traditional art of soul food cooking is dying out in the African-American community and believes it’s a very important tradition that she hopes to help pass along to the younger generation. and experience it, more importantly, you just can’t allow that fear to hold you hostage of what needs to be accomplished. The worse thing that could happen is you fail to succeed. C.S. Lewis said, “Failures are finger posts’ on the road to achievement.” No one is or ever will be exempt from mess-ups—it’s an integral part of life. Let us end this year reaching for greatness, favor and blessings. The only way to get what is rightfully yours is to get up and get out. Unfortunately, our talk is too often backed by little action, as if the words alone will take wings and manifest. This only happens when your talk equals faith “… .according to your faith let it be done to you (Matthew 9:29).” Anyone who has ever done anything probably didn’t accomplish perfection during the first trial run. In most cases, you have to fail your way to success. Winston Churchill said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” Yes, timing is everything, but you can’t keep waiting and waiting until the socalled perfect time when EVERY-

THING will be just right. Maya Angelou said, “Nothing changes unless you do…” The way to change your life and impact the lives of others is to stop hiding behind fear. One word of encouragement could catapult someone into destiny. You don’t have to be perfect to live in an imperfect world. Not only are you imperfect, so is the world and everyone around you. God doesn’t require perfection—He only wants availability for you to be about kingdom work and begin to walk into a spirit of excellence. Perhaps we can learn from President Elect Donald Trump’s playbook. Step into your greatness and out of fear—just get it done. Can you do it? Yes you can. What do you need to accomplish before the end of 2016…? © Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker.
