Residents reject Will Burns’ rezoning plan By J. Coyden Palmer Dozens of Bronzeville residents recently gave 4th Ward Ald. Will Burns a piece of their mind during a community meeting in which Burns announced plans to reclassify a property in the middle of a residential block for commercial use. The abandoned property in question sits in the 4200 block of South Berkeley, and years ago, housed a day care center. Residents on the block say they paid up to $1.5 million for the homes in a residential neighborhood, not a block for businesses. “This is not a commercial district; it is a residential area,” said Doug Jackson, who is serving as a spokesperson for his fellow neighbors. According to Jackson and other residents who attended an informational meeting Nov. 15, Quad City Development Corporation (QCDC) has purchased the building and plans to operate their headquarters within the space, which is fenced in, but was once known as the Abraham Lincoln Center. They also intend to lease a portion of the building to an affiliated social service agency: Center for Working Families/Cara Program, according to the residents. Officials with QCDC could not be reached for comment. In the meantime, residents are discussing hiring a private attorney to represent them should Burns change his mind and bring the ordinance up at a future Zoning Committee meeting. But after all of the backlash (Continued on page 3)

Did Corey Morgan execute Tyshawn Lee in a string of retaliations between gangs? By J. Coyden Palmer The brother of a murder victim whose death is believed to be connected to the execution of nine-year-old Tyshawn Lee, appeared in court Wednesday afternoon. Corey Morgan, 27, is being held in Cook County Jail on a $1 million bond after he

and another man were arrested in suburban Evergreen Park Nov. 16 on gun charges. Crusader sources in the Auburn/Gresham community have identified Morgan as a strong suspect in the killing of Lee on Nov. 3. Chicago Police say Morgan is only a person of interest, he is not an official suspect. However, police talked to Morgan in the

Walmart sells out of LaBelle’s pies

Oh Patti! By Erick Johnson

To millions of shoppers across the nation, they are delicious. To millions more, they have been hard to find. In the past weeks,

local Walmart stores have been flooded with calls from customers seeking Patti LaBelle’s sweet potato pie. But like Walmart stores across the nation, shoppers in Chicago and Gary have been singing the blues. Many stores are sold out. With Thanksgiving only a week away, many consumers will be scrambling to find LaBelle’s coveted sweet potato pie. A soul food staple that has been part of Black culture for over a century, LaBelle’s version is crossing ethnic lines and creating a shopping frenzy at Walmart stores all across the country. With sales booming, LaBelle’s success highlights the spending power of Black consumers and may bring more opportunities for the legendary soul singer. days after Lee’s murder about the case. Since he was not charged at the time, The Crusader did not identify him in a story that ran Nov. 14 about a string of murders believed to be connected to the Lee case. The first time, Morgan turned himself in voluntarily and obtained the counsel of prominent defense attorney Sam Adam, Jr., who said he was representing Morgan freeof-charge. But, in court Wednesday, public defender Jeff Kent represented Morgan. Dressed in an orange sweater shirt and blue jeans, Morgan appeared before Judge Adam Bourgeois. Prosecutors alleged Morgan and Dwright Boone-Doty, 21, were pulled over around 12:30 p.m. at 3041 West 87th Street. The officers observed a gun in the waistband of Doty. After concluding he did not have a valid concealed carry license, he was taken into custody. Allegedly, Morgan had a duffle bag in his possession and upon being searched, a loaded .40-caliber handgun with 14 rounds was discovered. Both men have prior convictions for felonies and are not allowed to legally own any firearms. “Fellas, I’m very consistent when it comes to felons with guns,” said Bourgeois before he announced bail conditions. “They tell you when you are released from the state’s custody, no guns.” The weapons recovered from Morgan and (Continued on page 3)

A prayer for the arrest of Tyshawn Lee’s killer By Chinta Strausberg What a holiday gift it would be if police were to capture the killer of 9year-old Tyshawn Michael Lee whose bullet-riddled body was found in an alley near 80th and Damen—his favorite basketball not too far behind. Police officials believe he was lured there for what they called an “assassination.” They speculate that the child’s death is linked to his father, Pierre Stokes, Jr., and his alleged gang ties. But that has yet to be verified and the father continues to deny the allegation.

Chinta Strausberg What does remain crystal clear is the death of an innocent and friendly little boy. According to adults living near the crime scene and one of his best friends, Demetrius Harrison, 9, a

classmate at the Scott Joplin Elementary School, who is having a hard time dealing with Tyshawn’s death. During Tyshawn’s funeral on Tuesday, November 10, Demetrius stood outside of the Saint Sabina Church. As he talked to reporters, he stared at the basketball, which was included in his goodbye wishes for his best friend. I asked him his name, his age and what were his thoughts about little Tyshawn. His eyes lowered, focused on that basketball and in a very quiet voice, he said, “I miss him.” I am worried about this child. I wonder if he is getting the counseling other students get when there is a shooting at or near schools. I wonder if the other students at Scott Joplin Elementary School are getting crisis intervention sessions. From Demetrius’ eyes, he appeared to be hopeless. He seemed lost as if he were in a daze—as if he were frozen in time. He just stood almost lifeless holding that basketball. That image keeps haunting me. Many nights I can’t sleep thinking of these two 9-year-old children—one dead, the other alive but obviously very troubled. How can the killer of Tyshawn, a precious gift from God, sleep at night? How can people continue to hide this coward who pumped bullets into the head and torso of little Tyshawn and go on as if nothing happened? His killer reminds me of ISIS- soulless, heartless cowards. I pray he will be captured this holiday

AS HIS BEST friend, Tyshawn Lee, 9, was being funeralized, Demetrius Harrison, 9, a fourth grader at the Scot Joplin Elementary School where Tyshawn attended, stood outside of Saint Sabina Church holding a basketball with his goodbye wishes scrawled over the ball. “I miss him,” Demetrius told reporters. (Photo by Chinta Strausberg) season so that little Tyshawn, Demetrius, his classmates and family can get the justice they so deserve. Dear heavenly Father. Protect little Demetrius. Give him the peace he needs to cope with the tragic loss of his best friend. Give him the strength he needs to go on in life with hope for a tomorrow, with the hope that peace will one day reign in our communities. Dear God, give him the right mindset and take away any feelings of bitterness, hatred or loneliness that he may be having in the unfortunate

death of his friend. Let Demetrius know he is not alone. Dear God, give him a renewed hope, a new purpose and mission in life that one day he may become the next Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or the next Thurgood Marshall. Give him the light he needs to stay on the right course during these very troubling times. And, Dear God, please take away the nightmares that perhaps are haunting little Demetrius. Give him the hope that he needs to pull himself out of the dark recesses of his mind.

Give him the strength he needs to make it not only through this holiday season, but the rest of his life. Give him strength so that when he looks at Tyshawn’s chair at school, it will be a reminder of the need to become a social justice fighter, of the call for reform and sensible gun laws, of a clarion call for background checks on all gun purchases. Let Tyshawn’s death be the instrument you use, Dear Lord, to turn little Demetrius into one of the greatest social justice change agents this nation has seen in decades.

Walmart sells out of Patti LaBelle’s pies (Continued from page 1) Proctor wanted a pie, but was one of many shoppers who struck out. “They must be real good. I can’t wait to try it,” she said. On Tuesday, November 17, another shopper, Dorothulia Davis from Hyde Park, waited an hour and half, hoping that a fresh batch of pies would be on a shipment that came in at 1 p.m. She left disappointed. She had already tried a Walmart store in Humboldt Park on Saturday, but they were out too. “The best sweet potato pie I had was in Mississippi, but Patti can cook; so I wanted to try her pie,” Davis said. On Monday, November 16, nearly every Walmart store in Chicago were sold out of LaBelle’s pies. Some had few pies to begin with. After numerous phone calls, the Chicago Crusader also learned that most Walmart stores in predominately white neighorhoods were out of the product as well. Because of the high demand, many Walmart stores in the area were out of the pies for days. There were reports that Walmart’s distribution warehouse ran out of the product. Walmart executives urged the pie’s producer to immediately boost production when the company’s supply ran out. 2

Many stores on the South Side who were out of stock for days and inundated with phone calls and requests from anxious customers seeking LaBelle’s popular creation. Before a reporter could ask about the product, one stock person at Walmart said “Good afternoon we are out of Patti LaBelle’s sweet potato pies. How may I help you?” Nationwide, the pies have sold out at Walmart locations in Los Angeles, Miami and Philadelphia, which is LaBelle’s hometown. At a Walmart in Kalamazoo, Michigan, 120 cases of the sweet potato pies sold out last Sunday. Managers at the store said they were selling at one pie per second during business hours. At a Walmart in North Bergen, N.J., the store received a shipment of 194 pies on Saturday, November 14, one day after their supply of sold out within three hours. At $3.48, many customers were buying five or six pies for their relatives and friends. A church called asking to buy about 300 pies. According to news reports, LaBelle’s pies generated some $2.3 million in sales last weekend alone. There was a time when every Christmas season produced a hot toy or item. But Thanksgiving has never

ing a big fortune and more business opportunities for LaBelle, who for years was known as an outstanding cook among friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry. Her net worth is already an estimated $50,000,000 according to several reports. But with her growing pie empire, her worth could climb much higher. For decades, America has had Betty Crocker’s cakes, and Sara Lee desserts. In just one week, LaBelle’s pie quickly dominated the grocery business with little to no marketing campaigns or sales gimmicks. All it took was a funny and entertaining review on YouTube by James Wright Chanel, an entertainer who lives in California. Since the video was posted on November 11, it has made millions laugh as he sang some of LaBelle’s hits while he devoured her pie piece by piece. LaBelle called Chanel to thank him for his review, but some say the singer should give him a slice of her pie’s profits. Brandy Lewis, one shopper in Washington Park who tasted the pie, wasn’t overly impressed. “It’s good, but I’ll take a homemade pie instead any day,” she said.

NEWS

The Link between Emmett Till and “Black Lives Matter” By Dr. Clenora Hudson-Weems Considered a cause célèbre, news of Emmett Till’s lynching was spreading like wild fire worldwide. On October 22, the American Jewish Committee responded with a call to Congress to escalate Federal Civil Rights legislation, quoting outrage from European newspapers following the infamous “Not Guilty” verdict: German’s Freies Volk— “The Life of a Negro Isn’t Worth a Whistle.” Belgium’s Le Drapeau Rouge (the Red Flag)—“Killing a black person isn’t a crime in the home of the Yankees.” France’s Le Figaro— “The Shame of the Sumner Jury.” [And] A British inquirer asked an American, “Are you from the land where the boy was killed?” (Hudson, Emmett—Legacy, Redemption and Forgiveness, 2015, p. 37). Clearly the sentiments in 1955, as presented in the above quotation, following the senseless, brutal lynching of 14-year-old Emmett Till of Chicago for whistling at 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant of Money, MS, and the subsequent mock trial, strongly anticipate the Till Continuum, represented in the national on-going escalating unresolved violence against Blacks today. Challenging the violation of the personhood of a naive child resonates today, for like Till, the victimization of Blacks today remain a noose around the necks of our society. This age-old problem, not new—Blacks being denied our birthright to human rights— “All Men Are Created Equal”—is the focus of the student demonstration at MU. Racial Dominance is not to be confused with any other focus of unrest on other campuses. In defining our movement—and we have the

right to do so—let us not get it twisted! We want to resolve this lingering historical nemesis Now—“Black Lives Matter!” Nine months after completing the PhD from U of Iowa in 1988, I spoke on my Ford Dissertation, “Emmett Till: The Impetus of the Modern Civil Rights Movement,” (published in 1994 as Emmett Till: The Sacrificial Lamb of the Civil Rights Movement) at the U of Utah for Black History Month. While there, I was interviewed by Mid-Day News, which was the 1st televised coverage of Till as Catalyst of the Movement. Later, at the program, a reporter asked, “Why Emmett Till today? That was a long time ago.” My response was that given the growing racial tension on college and university campuses across the country today, the lessons of the Till Murder Case are ever present. Indeed, that urgency yet lives, as evidenced by the current national news of the plight and predicament of Black students (and faculty and staff, too) at the U of Missouri-Columbia. In fact, some of those same concerns, brought forth in 2002 by Black faculty and staff, including Black faculty, staff and student retention, yet exist. As Michael Middleton, Interim President of the University of Missouri System, who vows to address racism, so aptly stated in his Acceptance Speech, calling for “Liberty and Justice for All.” “We are faced with a problem that every university in America is faced with . . . the historical wrongs that have not been remedied. Until we address these problems, they will continue to haunt us.” Indeed, the laxity in addressing the racist hostile environment for Blacks is

Residents reject Will Burns’ . . . (Continued from page 1) he received earlier this month, Burns has seemingly backed down for now. “A number of community residents voiced concerns about the zoning change and the proposed use of the building. Given the issues that were raised, I will not call for the Committee on Zoning to hear or pass the introduced zoning amendment at its November 17th meeting,” Burns wrote to his constituents.

Will Burns www.chicagocrusader.com

Jackson said while the alderman did the right thing in not bringing the measure up in the zoning meeting, the residents have felt disrespected by the alderman, which is a separate issue. “I think the thing he said that shocked us all the most was when he told us at the meeting, ‘I didn’t think it was that big of a deal,’” according to Jackson. “He does not have a connection with the constituents, and we are seeing this not just in our block, but in places throughout the ward.” Jackson said what made the situation so perplexing for residents is that there is a commercial business area a block away that is in need of tenants. He also said there are commercial properties nearby in which the alderman has planned to rezone as residential. “He has a habit of flip-flopping the zoning code to fit his particular need,” Jackson said. “And he’s doing this without talking to the people who live here first.” The Crusader will continue to monitor this situation as it develops.

send, not only for the victims of racism, but for all humankind, as our destinies everywhere—our misfortunes and victories—are, indeed, interconnected. Let us work, then, to bring this American Dream to fruition! Surely somewhere a fair common ground exists—“Black Lives Matter, Too,” contrary to what is sadly denoted and connoted—“Black Lives Don’t Matter!” And so, in the final analysis, the ultimate historical goal, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” could be the end result, indeed, the birthright of God’s children worldwide. Clenora Hudson-Weems, PhD— Professor, University of Missouri-Columbia Dr. Clenora Hudson-Weems plaguing us here and worldwide, as well as Blacks in general both inside and outside the Academy. Sadly, victimization continues to follow us indiscriminately everywhere. Within the last 3 years alone, many highly visible racial hate crimes have occurred, the supreme paradigm of Till Continuums, including the murder of 17-year-old Travon Martin of Florida, 18-year-old Michael Brown of Ferguson, MO, and 28-year-old Sandra Bland of Chicago, to name a few. But the legal handling of these cases and others makes an important commentary on the urgent popular Movement today—“Black Lives Matter.” While Blacks, for the most part are the primary victims, Whites, too, could ultimately suffer, for no one is truly safe and secure until all are fairly and justly treated. In short, the empowered can and do oftentimes become the victim of others’ helplessness and hopelessness. And

thus, it behooves each and every one of us to stop the racism and violence NOW! In driving “the historical wrongs” and contemporary injustices home, let us consider the vision and the legacy. Since President Middleton has identified the raison d’être and the effects of the continuous underlying problem—RACISM, it is possible, then, that an opportunity to be responsive to students at the UMC could very well provide a framework for colleges and universities around the country as well. Possible strategies for correcting systemic institutionalized racism, which plagues the very setting and foundation of our intellectual nurturing domicile, could bring this ugly American tragedy/nightmare, indeed, as ugly as the bloated face of Emmett Till, to a halt. To be sure, the ultimate betterment of ourselves, our children, and our future generations would be a God

NOTE: Emmett Till Expert is author of The Till Trilogy and the first to establish the lynching of Emmett Louis “Bobo” Till as catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement (CRM) in her 1988 Ford Doctoral Dissertation (U of Iowa), “Emmett Till: The Impetus of the Modern CRM,” later published as Emmett Till: The Sacrificial Lamb of the CRM (1994). Her recent Till book, Emmett—Legacy, Redemption & Forgiveness (2015), gives an added new twist to the Till Story, the Spirit of Redemption. Responding to the challenge of the controversial nature of the groundbreaking Till work, dating back nearly 30 years when Hudson’s dissertation committee at the U of Iowa warned her that the thesis would be virtually impossible to defend, she asserted, “If I can’t defend my dissertation, then I don’t get the PhD and I am willing to take that chance.” Later she accepted a small press, as large presses shied away. Today, Till has become a household name.

Did Corey Morgan execute Tyshawn Lee in a string of retaliations between gangs? (Continued from page 1) Doty are important to the Lee investigation because sources tell the Crusader the murder weapon used in Lee’s killing was a .40caliber, semi-automatic handgun. Ballistic tests are currently being performed on both weapons to see if there is a link to the Lee murder, stated community activist Andrew Holmes, who works closely with police. Morgan wobbled and had to be held up by a court deputy when his bail was announced at $1 million. He gazed into the court galley with a look of bewilderment as he was led away by two deputies. His attorney unsuccessfully attempted to argue Morgan was not a violent person or a flight risk. “You don’t consider illegal possession of a weapon by a felon violent, Mr. Kent?” Bourgeois asked. “I do.” Morgan has been picked up for violating conditions of his parole twice

before. He has also failed to appear in court five times, according to court records that were read at his bond hearing. His attorney said he works in construction demolition. Doty works in construction as well, but prosecutors did not say how the pair knew one another. Morgan’s address, in the 7800 block of South Hoyne, is five blocks away from where 19-year-old Brianna Jenkins was shot and killed as she sat in a car on Oct. 18 with another man, who police say was a gang member. Morgan’s brother, Tracey, was shot and killed; his mother injured just days before on Oct. 13 in the 8200 block of South Lafayette. They were attacked just minutes after Tracey left a gang “call-in” meeting, which is a tool used by police to try to prevent gang violence. His attorney said his client has nothing to do with any murders, but is grieving the loss of his brother.

“[Morgan] maintained his innocence when police questioned him a couple of weeks ago and maintains his innocence now,” Kent said in a statement released on Morgan’s behalf. “His family is supporting him through this ordeal. He says he had nothing to do with Tyshawn Lee’s execution. The entire city wants the person who did this caught, but it’s not Corey.” The Crusader reported last week that family members of Morgan attended Scott Joplin School; the same school Lee attended and may have been involved in identifying the young boy to his eventual killers. Chicago Police released a statement after Morgan’s latest arrest that read in part: “CPD will continue to use every legal resource to build the strongest prosecution possible and hold Tyshawn’s killers accountable to answer for their barbaric crimes against this innocent child.”

EDITORIAL THE MOTHER OF ALL WARS REALIZED Today the world is reeling from bad news on multiple fronts. Warfare of various kinds seems to be springing up in unexpected places. Recently, one of the most frightening acts committed in this regard was the coordinated attacks on Paris, France, wherein at least 129 people were killed and more than 300 injured allegedly by ISIS terrorists. This has caused many people in the Western world to go ballistic; all of a sudden they are realizing that they are vulnerable when it comes to the terrorism that has been so common on foreign shores. But they should have expected this because they were warned by the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, who told the Bush administration that he would be met with “The Mother of All Wars!” People scoffed in disbelief, but it turns out that he was right. Arrogance that comes from the “might is right” syndrome demonstrated by some Western leaders is myopic. They have acted in such a manner that they think that the possession of great military power gives them the right to do whatever they want to do. They can go in and remove whatever leaders that they do not want on the world stage. In this regard, the 911 debacle, wherein there was a search for weapons of mass destruction that were never found, somehow gave America the right to take out a leader that had been effective in his own realm. People laughed at Saddam’s scud missiles in comparison to the formidable weaponry possessed by America and her allies. But Bush and his cronies seem to have forgotten one important lesson that has come through the Christian pipeline - the story of David and Goliath. Arrogance and the notions of white supremacy have caused some of our leaders, and their followers, to believe that they are invincible. They are wrong for one simple fact: every action is met with an equal and opposite reaction. In other words, no matter how mighty one may be, there is always someone or something that can bring the opposition down. For example, a tiny virus can defeat legions of people without firing a single weapon. Great men have been powerless in the face of the flu. When Bush et al embarked on the Gulf War under dubious motives, most likely connected with oil and a strategic “rearranging” of the Middle East, they thumbed their noses at a culture that they felt was inferior. The sycophantic crowds on these shores applauded those dastardly actions because the notions of patriotism had blinded them. It is too bad that people continue to make the same mistakes over and over again, even though there are lessons all around that should give people caution before jumping onto a populist bandwagon. But back to Paris. The coordinated attacks on this great city have generated a lot of fear. And they should well be afraid. A war on terror is a never-ending proposition. It is like the hydra - cut off one head and another takes its place. The enemies are invisible, and like a virus, they can infiltrate a population and turn it against itself. Scores of Americans and others have opted to join the ISIS cause. Because of this, it is very difficult to know from whence the next attack will come. Moreover, how will we know when the war on terror is won? So far, it has been going on for at least 20 years with no end in sight. And though some opposition leaders have fallen, like the patsy Osama bin Laden, others have taken his place. The terrorists have become more strategic and effective, and some say that it is just a matter of time before the entire Western world is engulfed in mayhem because of it. A side note: while 129 people were killed in Paris, 147 were killed in Kenya by Islamists in an attack on a school. There is less mainstream talk about the Kenyan affair because it has been drowned out by the clamor coming out of Paris and the ripple effect that it is generating. Do Black lives matter? It depends upon who is doing the observing. One thing is certain - violence only begets more violence, and judging from recent events, the world is in for a bumpy ride until we figure this out! A luta continua.

Does it seem strange to you that since we got Bruce Rauner as governor Black men are doing backflips like court jesters to be with him? Ken Dunkin makes one wonder whether it is just Rauner’s money he wants or is Rauner blackmailing Dunkin with something? It sure is difficult to understand how this man didn’t have peep to say when we had a Democrat as governor; but we get a rich white man and Dunkin is the self-declared “negotiator,” common sense legislator (in his own mind) and a friend to a white man. Dunkin has taken it upon himself to sit out three consecutive votes that would help Black people and low income people. His reasons for doing so seem to only make sense to him. I understand that Dunkin represents some Gold Coast white folks but the majority of his district lies within the bounds of where everyday Black people live. It sure looks like Rauner has caused him to forget about that part. It would be different if the governor had proven himself to be a friend to Black people, but that is not the case. Dunkin has joined the compa-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Is it just Rauner’s money? Dear Editor:

ny of another sell-out, James Meeks. Preacher Meeks got Black folks to listen to Rauner when Rauner was campaigning for governor. The whispers then were that Meeks was in it for himself and could care less if the Black community got anything from a Rauner governorship. Well look at how those whispers have turned into reality. Meeks got a plum job with the state board of education and probably something under the table. Black people got cuts to both programs and funding that would improve the community. Just like Meeks, Willie Wilson was in lockstep with Rauner during the last election cycle. Wilson went so far as to call Rauner his friend. Because he is rich, Wilson just apparently wanted to be close to a rich white man so he supported Rauner. Wilson has fallen off the face of the earth since he said he was running for President of the United States. We can’t leave Corey Brooks, another preacher, out of the mix. Brooks worked like a slave for Rauner. He tried to convince people his support was sincere, but just like Meeks it was obvious he was looking to see what was in it for him. In polite company they would call him a political whore. I wonder if Rauner is done or will he continue to pick off Black men, one by one and render them useless to the community. Bob Mitchell

COMMENTARY

Silent No More: America’s Youth Mobilize By Shari Runner There’s something special happening when it comes to civil rights in this country. Young people are reinvigorating the art of civil disobedience and beginning to spark real and meaningful change. Black students at the University of Missouri have long been complaining of an environment where they too often confront the vestiges of racism and are made to feel marginalized. Perhaps most importantly, Mizzou students felt that those in charge had been, at best, indifferent to their complaints. So when graduate student Jonathan Butler decided to stage a hunger strike, something happened that couldn’t be ignored. His civil disobedience became the focal point for hundreds of students and faculty who joined forces to support Butler, leading to the resignation of University President Tim Wolfe. After he ended his hunger strike, Butler tweeted, “This was NOT a singular effort this was a COMMUNITY effort. There is power in solidarity.” And successful ac-

Harry Alford Shari C. Runner tivism in one place can influence action elsewhere. Jonathan Butler has talked about how he was inspired to take action after he participated in the protests in nearby Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. The protests in Ferguson, Missouri were inspired and supported by the Black Lives Matter movement, which sprung up following the shooting death of an-

other unarmed teen, Trayvon Martin in Florida. And protests happening on the campus of Yale University – where students are also complaining about a racist environment -- will likely be influenced by the outcomes generated at the University of Missouri. Young activism is alive and well here in Chicago. The group Fearless Leading by the Youth is credited with playing a role in the University of Chicago Medicine’s decision to invest $40-million in a much-needed new trauma center at Holy Cross Hospital on the city’s south side. And young Asean Johnson’s emphatic activism on behalf of public education amid a flurry of school closings – most in the city’s neighborhoods of color – is believed to have helped save his own Marcus Garvey Elementary School from being shut down. Unfortunately, but perhaps not unexpectedly, there is a backlash against this resurgent activism. Most recently, officials around the country – including our own mayor, Rahm Emanuel – have begun blaming those who are protesting police misconduct for

inhibiting the police from doing their jobs. Several police unions around the country, including Chicago’s, are calling for a boycott of director Quentin Tarantino’s films after he spoke out against police brutality. There’s the even bigger threat of violent retaliation. University of Missouri Police arrested a 19year-old white male who they suspect of making terroristic threats against Black students in the wake of the recent protests. This, of course, is not the first time our young people have had to face intimidation, and, if history is any indication, it won’t be the last. However, I’m convinced that young people will not be intimidated into silence, especially now that they’re beginning to affect change. Contrary to how they are often portrayed, they are finding their collective voices and using them. More young people would be

willing to stand up for change, but too often community and institutional leaders are not standing in support of them. This is an undeniable hindrance to progress on everything from making sure that schools in our communities of color get the resources they need to eradicating Chicago’s underground economy that, for many, serves as the only beacon of hope. The Chicago Urban League challenges policymakers, foundations, religious organizations and individuals at all levels to join us in a concerted effort to become actively involved in empowering our young people. The children we meet every day are a reminder that each of us has the power – and an obligation -to take an active role in closing the book on social injustice. Racism on College Campuses By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist As I followed recent events at the University of Missouri that culminated in the resignation of its president for mishandling incidents of blatant racism on the Columbia, Mo. campus, I thought back to an article I wrote as a Washington correspondent for the Chicago Tribune nearly three decades ago. The article, published Feb. 17, 1987 - long before this current crop of college students were born - ran under the headline, “Racial Climate Turn Cool on Campuses.” I began the article by recounting the story of Douglas Wilson, an African American, being paired with Wade Bartley, who is White, in a dorm room at Penn State University. “Luckily for both of us, I try very hard not to be prejudice (sic), but the fact is that because we are of different races, we are very different both physically and mentally,” Bartley wrote in a term paper. “...My roommate, like most Blacks today, abuse and overextend (sic) the rights they have received.” After reading the paper, Wilson was fuming. “The two never reconciled their differences, and Wilson finally moved out and roomed with anwww.chicagocrusader.coM

George E. Curry other Black student.” I wrote. “While it is not the most dramatic example, some educators have called the Penn State incident symptomatic of an increase in racial tension on the campuses of the nation’s predominantly white universities. “More vivid examples rocked the Citadel, a military academy where five white cadets dressed in Ku Klux Klan regalia burst into the room of a Black Cadets, and at the

University of Alabama, where a cross was burned in front of a building that was to house a Black sorority.” I also noted that a Black woman leaving her job as a telephone operator at the University of Pennsylvania was called derogatory names and was struck by a bottle of urine thrown from a dormitory window. At Smith College, an elite women’s institution in Northampton, Mass., the minority cultural center was defaced with the inscriptions, “Niggers, chinks and spics stop your complaining” and “Niggers go home.” Two Black students at the State University of New York at Albany returned to their dorm and was met by a sign attached to their door reading, “We don’t want niggers on our floor. Leave tomorrow or die.” The New York Times recently recounted a string of racist incidents under the headline, “At University of Missouri, Black Students See a Campus Riven by Race.” It began, “At first, Briana Gray just chalked up the comments and questions from her new roommate at the University of Missouri to innocent ignorance: How do you style your hair? What do you put in it? “But then her white roommate from rural Missouri started playing a rap song with a racial slur and singing the slur loudly, recalled Ms. Gray, a Black senior from suburban

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

Chicago. Another time, the roommate wondered whether Black people had greasy skin because slaves were forced to sweat a lot. “Then one day, Ms. Gray said, she found a picture tacked to her door of what appeared to be a Black woman being lynched...” Symone Lenoir told The Times about the burden of being Black on a White campus. “It can be exhausting when people are making assumptions about you based on your skin color,” she said. “It can be exhausting feeling like you’re speaking for your entire race.” So exhausting, she said, that some mornings she asks herself, “Do I even want to go to class and sit with people?” Politico observed, “But many claim there’s a glimmer of hope: The next generation of Americans, they say, is ‘post-racial’ - more tolerant, and therefore more capable of easing these race-based inequities. Unfortunately, closer examination of the data suggests that millennials aren’t racially tolerant, they’re racially apathetic: They simply ignore structural racism rather than try to fix it.” The Washington Post was even more blunt: “Millennials are just as racist as their parents.” There is a sharp contrast in the treatment of Black and White millennials. In 2013, the incarceration rate of Black men 18 and 19 years old was seven times higher than they were for Whites in this same age

group and twice as high as for Latino men in that age bracket. More than half - 54.4 percent - reported that they or someone they knew was harassed or subjected to violence by police, compared with 32.8 percent of White youth and 24.8 percent of Latino youth. One of my prized high school journalism workshop students from St. Louis, Vivian King, told about the excitement of being named homecoming queen in 1985 along with Marvin Cobbs, the Black homecoming king. “I think some of the alumni were not ready for two African-Americans to be king and queen,” she recounted. “When we were announced at halftime, there was a spattering of boos. It was a little disheartening to hear that. It created quite the discussion on campus.” And so have the recent protests. Now, it’s time for action. George E. COMMENTARY

REMEMBERING THE DURBAN 400 Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill

It has been fourteen years since the historic United Nations World Conference Against Racism took place in Durban, South Africa. We should always remember the role the Durban 400 played in impacting the outcome of this most important event in history. The Durban 400 was made up of the December 12th Movement International Secretariat and the National Black United Front (NBUF) that were leading participants in the United Nations World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) that was held in Durban, South Africa from August 31st through September 7, 2001. Because the United States did not agree with many of the issues being raised at this conference, particularly, the push by African people worldwide to declare that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery are a Crime Against Humanity and that Reparations are owed to African people in the Diaspora and on the continent of Africa, the United States withdrew their low level delegation and left only the Ambassador to South Africa to represent them.

The role of the United States and Western Europe (WEO) to subvert the agenda “provided the indisputable proof” that the issues we fought for, to be included in the Durban Declaration, went to the “heart of the World Conference Against Racism.” For over two years, representatives from the Durban 400 traveled throughout the world attending the various preparatory meetings for the WCAR, advocating our agenda that was simple and focused: 1) Declaration of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, Slavery, and Colonialism as Crimes Against Humanity; 2) Reparations for African people on the continent and in the Diaspora; 3) Recognition of the Economic Base of Racism. As the (Non Governmental Organization) International Association Against Torture pointed out in their intervention at the WCAR, “From the beginning they were clear (The U.S. and the WEO Group) that a conference which addressed racism and racial discrimination could only have one out-

come— to subject them to the same human rights standards which they imperiously demand that the developing world uncomplainingly submit to and to identify them as perpetrators of history’s greatest crime against humanity, the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery.” How mighty can the United States be without acknowledging, apologizing, and paying reparations to African people for the Greatest Crime Against Humanity they participated in, the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, Slavery, and Colonialism? As researched by the UNESCO Slave Trade Project, the Museum of the Atlantic Slave Trade, and the Harvard Database on Slave Voyages, twenty-eight to forty-two million African people were captured and enslaved between 1441 and 1888… Four to six million Africans, 40% of all captives and slaves, were murdered or died along the entire “way of death…” Just as other people never forget their history and the tragedies and crimes committed against them, nei-

ther should African people. Therefore, the Durban 400 declared a victory in contributing to the final outcome of the Durban Declaration that reflects the interests of African people by citing: “We acknowledge that slavery and the slave trade, including the transatlantic slave trade, were appalling tragedies in the history of humanity not only because of their abhorrent barbarism but also in terms of their magnitude, organized nature and especially their negation of the essence of the victims and further acknowledge that slavery and the slave trade are a crime against humanity and should always have been so…” Although the language of the Durban Declaration did not specifically call for reparations for African people, it is now our duty to intensify our organizing in demanding the United States Government and U. S. Corporations pay reparations. We must continue to educate the African Community of America on the continued need to organize and revitalize the Reparations Movement.

REPUBLICANS IGNORE BLACK PEOPLE By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist As I watched the Republican debate on October 10, I thought about Kanye West and the comments he made after Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans. He said, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.” Later he tiptoed away from the comment by saying he “regretted” it, but he never apologized. Five years later, in 2010, Bush gave the Today Show’s Matt Lauer an interview. Bush stated that the West remarks were an “all time low” in his Presidency. He went on to say, “I didn’t appreciate it then, and I don’t appreciate it now. . . I resent it.” He then said that West’s comments were “one of the most disgusting moments” of his Presidency. Let’s see. Former President Bush took us into Iran, and we’re still there. His actions were partly the cause of the Great Recession. He was widely described as less than intelligent and, in fact, a doofus. But remarks from Kanye West were “one of the most disgusting moments” of his presidency? These remarks suggest that George W. Bush has as little judgment as he was often accused of. Consider Iraq— New Orleans— and a tax code that favored the wealthy. Yet Kanye West’s remarks were an “all 6

time low”? Why does this Kanye West kerfuffle remind me of the last Republican debate? Ben Carson is the only person on stage that used the work “black,” and he said it in connection to increasing the minimum wage, which he opposes. None of the others uttered a peep about African American people, not in terms of entrepreneurship, the wealth gap, nor discrimination in the workplace. It’s fair to say that none of the moderators asked about race and the economy. But just as the candidates jumped into the conversation when they wanted to, none jumped in after Carson’s remark (a perfect opening). Kanye West said, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.” One might say the same thing for the eight major Republican candidates who stood on stage and ignored Black people. Republicans keep saying they want to reach out to people of color, but ignoring Black people suggests that they are thinking about us as much as George Bush did in 2005. They did talk about immigration, or the Latino population (Trump isn’t trying to build a wall between the United States and Canada, but between the United States and Mexico). That part of the conversation was, in my opinion, impractical and disparaging. How is the United States going to

SATURDAY, November 21, 2015

Dr. Julianne Malveaux expel millions of people and then allow them to come back? Each of the candidates talked about shrinking the size of government, but building a wall and deporting people would increase the federal payroll. I’ve had about enough of Marco Rubio’s immigrant parents story. He could score a couple of points by adding comments about involuntary immigrants. Such a comment might suggest to African Americans that they at least slightly get some of the race issues that plague our country, but those candidates ignore African Americans on one hand, and offer rhetoric

about including African Americans on the other The moderators of this debate— Fox Business Staff Neil Cavuto and Maria Bartiromo, along with the Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker did a great job in keeping things moving forward and imposing time limits (although many ignored the bell that Cavuto said would ring when time was up.) And then there’s the to-be-expected interrupting and crosstalk. There were far fewer personal attacks. The debate showed that none of the candidates had developed comprehensive policy positions. All that was missing for me was a question about race and the economy. Race is a low priority for all of the candidates, Democratic and Republican, in the 2016 election. The Democrats will say some of the ap-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

propriate things because they have no choice but to recognize that African Americans are part of their base. The Republicans talk diversity, but they don’t practice it, and haven’t figured out how to weave a narrative about race into their conversations. Kanye West said that George W. Bush “doesn’t care about Black people.” This group of candidates ignore Black people and behave as if there are no consequences when they turn their backs on the ones they might woo later. Race, Obama and Public Policy” will be released in November 2015 and is available for preorder at www.juliannemalveaux.com

For one, folks say now that gay marriage is legal, why is this guy hiding his real sexual identity. Two, the real issue, folks is saying, is that the

other man he’s giving his sugar too, is also closeted and married to a beard who has mental health issues, sniffs cocaine and tries to pretend she’s back in Washington, D.C. Now this preacher loves the sepia color. We also hear that he loves to brag about his connections to this well-known politician so he can “hook himself up” with access to money and power. De problem with this young preacher is that he is also crazy, broke, controlled by his mother, and is functionally illiterate. I know the season got off to a rough start and Jay Cutler looked like a waste of money. Now things are turning around and folks are getting way too excited about a couple of wins. The season is still young and there will be plenty of opportunities for the Bears to lose even more games. That is the reality people ought to be looking at. The law of averages says that when you lose so many, you are bound to win a couple. That is all that

is happening here. Did you notice that even when the team had a twotouchdown lead there were people saying it wasn’t enough? It also could be that because the Chicago Cubs were so successful some of that enthusiasm may have spilled over to Bears fans. That is good. I am not anti-Bears but I am a practical person. People who keep their emotions in check will not be disappointed down the road when the Bears return to their old ways. Shed Palmer

COMMUNITY CALENDAR FILM SCREENING IN THE GAME: Award-winning director Maria Finitzo’s warm and often hearttugging film, which takes a look at four years in the life of the girls’ soccer team at Chicago’s inner city Kelly High School in the primarily Hispanic Brighton Park neighborhood, is an intimate study of sisterhood and hope in the face of adversity presented by Kartemquin Films. The screening will take place Saturday, November 21 at 2 p.m., at the Archer Heights Branch of the Chicago Public Library, 5055 S. Archer Avenue. For more information, please call 312-747-4050. SPIKE LEE’S FILM CHI-RAQ WILL HOLD ITS CHICAGO PREMIERE AT THE CHICAGO THEATRE: Spike Lee has described his film, which engendered criticism for its portrayal of violence in Chicago, as a modern twist on the Greek comedic tale of Lysistrata, in which women of ancient Greece withhold sex from their husbands and boyfriends as a strategy to end the Peloponnesian War. This film will premiere at the Chicago Theatre on Sunday, November 22. Choosing Chicago as a location based on the city’s murder stats and history of dramatic gun violence has raised the ire of those who feel the city has been unfairly targeted. “He lived in Chicago for a short time when he was young and he didn’t have a job one summer,” said Father Pfleger, Pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church. “And he claims the advice given to him by an elderly woman to get a camera and take pictures changed his life. It developed his eventual interest in film. Spike wants his films to make you wrestle with your conscience. You may laugh and cry when you see his films, but his films hopefully tell you what we gotta do.” ST. AGATHA CATHOLIC CHURCH HEALTH FAIR: On Sunday, November 22, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., St. Agatha Catholic Church, 3147 W. Douglas Boulevard, Chicago, IL 60623, will host a health fair sponsored by ACCESS. For more than 20 years, ACCESS has been on the frontlines of community-based health care. ACCESS provides a continuum of care model that connects patients to health care resources both within andbeyond the walls of their 35 federallyqualified health centers (FQHCs). ACCESS’ services are designed to address the health of underserved communities in such areas as preventive care, chronic disease management, and support services. To address patients’ comprehensive health needs, ACCESS physicians, nurse practitioners, midwives and other providers are teamed with outreach staff, case managers, social workers and substance abuse counselors to advance a continuum of care. This year, ACCESS community health centers, located throughout Cook and DuPage counties, will 8

serve more than 175,000 low-income individuals and families, including 45,000 uninsured patients. Last year, ACCESS provided care to 7,377 pregnant women, 22,492 patients with hypertension, 13,065 patients with diabetes and 9,348 asthmatic patients. LAST CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THE FREEDOM PRINCIPLE EXPERIMENTS IN ART AND MUSIC, 1965 TO NOW AT THE MCA: This exhibit links the vibrant legacy of the 1960s African American avant-garde to current art and culture, continues at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) through November 22, 2015. It is occasioned in part by the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a still-flourishing organization of Chicago musicians whose interdisciplinary explorations expanded the boundaries of jazz. Alongside visual arts collectives such as the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA), the AACM was part of a deep engagement with black cultural nationalism both in Chicago and around the world during and after the civil rights era. Combining historical materials with contemporary responses, The Freedom Principle illuminates the continued relevance of that engagement today. The exhibition, which takes its title from a 1984 book by Chicago jazz critic John Litweiler, showcases the multifaceted world of the black avant-garde in Chicago during the 1960s alongside a selection of contemporary artists’ interpretations of this heritage. A listening station and an online microsite accompany the exhibition, as does a fully illustrated catalogue. The Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 220 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago IL 60611. BMOA shows their appreciation with Thanksgiving gifts With great expectations, hundreds of people waited in line to receive a free turkey and trimmings as the Black McDonald’s Operators Association (BMOA) kicked-off its 16th Annual “Food for the Body & Spirit” program on November 17. This community-based event spanned four days and included giveaways in the Austin, Englewood, Roseland and East Chicago communities. In total, more than 1,200 turkeys were distributed. The Food for the Body & Spirit program is one of the ways BMOA gives back during the holiday season, it’s their way of saying “thank you” to customers that have sup-

ported them throughout the year. BMOA president Derrick Taylor along with the other BMOA members, store managers, partners and volunteers were present at every location leading the way in the distribution despite Chicago’s inclement weather. The BMOA tradition was originally a prayer breakfast until 2014 when they converted it into the turkey giveaway for residents on the south and west sides, as well as parts of Indiana. Joining them in this year’s effort was the team from Inspiration 1390AM, who provided music, gifts, and helping hands to the early morning crowd. Pastor John Hannah was

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical practically transports audience members into the television special with all of the beloved original songs and a recreation of the original set and costume design for the stage. The cast brings new energy to the classic story and dialogue, while irresistible and lovable puppets help showcase the original charm of the television show’s stop-motion effects. “We address all of the familiar story elements from the television special with a talented cast and puppeteers who help recreate the magic on stage,” says Producing Partner Bob Penola. The story tells the tale of a young Rudolph who because of the appearance of his bright shining nose is ousted from the reindeer games in Christmas town. He flees town, meets up with new friends Hermey and Yukon, and a series of funny and endearing adventures ensue including a visit to The Island of Misfit Toys. Rudolph journeys home, where a snowstorm of epic proportions is threatening Christmas. Lyric Opera’s ‘Wozzeck’ ends its run November 21 Alban Berg’s “Wozzeck” opened at Lyric Opera of Chicago Sunday, November 1 for a run of six performances through Saturday, November 21. Sir Andrew Davis conducts Berg’s masterpiece for the first time in his latest collaboration with director Sir David McVicar. Previous collaborations between the two at Lyric include new productions of Antonin Dvo ák’s “Rusalka” and Richard Strauss’ “Elektra.” Tomasz Konieczny (debut) is the opera’s title character, a soldier who struggles with poverty and humiliation at the hands of others, including his superior officer, the Captain, Gerhard Siegel. Angela Denoke (debut) is cast as Marie, with whom Wozzeck has a child out of wedlock and Stefan Vinke (debut) is the Drum Major whose affair with Marie drives Wozzeck to madness and ultimately, murder. Additional cast members are Brindley Sherratt who portrays the Doctor who pays Wozzeck to submit to bizarre medical experiments, David Portillo is Andres, a fellow soldier and Jill Grove is Margret, Marie’s neighbor. Vicki Mortimer designed sets and costumes for the new production, with lighting design by Paule Constable. Michael Black is chorus master and Andrew George is choreographer. Sir Andrew Davis has previously conducted virtually all of Berg’s works except “Wozzeck.” He said

WOZZECK LABORS IN the grain field/Photo by Cory Weaver “There’s great variety in the ‘Wozzeck’ score. Some parts are angular, others haunting, with moments of relief that are supremely well timed. The last scene is unbelievably touching. This is one of the greatest operas of the 20th century.” Anthony Freud, Lyric’s general director, said “Wozzeck” has extraordinary immediacy and dramatic impact. Anyone who enjoys theater, anyone who enjoys film, shouldn’t miss “Wozzeck” because it’s utterly theatrical. It delivers an enormously powerful punch.” And there is only one more opportunity to see this opera that will leave you pondering at the opera’s conclusion. “Wozzeck” is performed in German with projected titles in English.

The performance lasts 100 minutes without intermission. Franz Lehar’s “The Merry Widow,” a new-to-Chicago production by Susan Stroman, director and choreographer, opened Friday, November 14 starring Renée Fleming as Hanna Glawari (in performances through December 3) and Nicole Cabell (December 9, 11, and 13) replacing Elizabeth Futral who was originally cast in the role. Baritone Thomas Hampson portrays Danilo; Heidi Stober is Valencienne and Michael Spyres is Camille. “The Merry Widow” is sung in English with projected English titles. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Praise in Contentment. Accepting the gift of life is a beautiful and powerful expression of gratitude to the Giver of Life. My sister, Almetta shared how she came to the realization that when we appreciate the gift of life that God has so graciously given to us—this can be rendered as a form of praise. This is appreciation for whatever state you are in including being grateful of your apple or pear shaped body, the texture of the hair, size of your lips, eyes, feet or hands. “God made me—He made me who I am...” are some of the words to a beautiful song recorded by the Mississippi Mass Choir. I felt these lyrics were rather befitting for this week’s theme of ‘praise in contentment.’ One of the greatest writers in the New Testament, the Apostle Paul stated “... I have learned how to be content with whatever I have (Philip-

pians 4:11). So being content is not the same as being stuck with your lot in life. Contentment is accepting where you are while pursuing better. It’s perfectly fine to aspire more, yet it’s equally important to embrace each and every moment. Right now this moment is all you have. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift—that’s why it’s called the present. Before you know it—this very moment will be a memory. How you spend it will determine your future. Your position in life is a part of God’s master plan. Perhaps you feel you were born on the wrong side of the tracks. Thankfully your present situation has nothing to do with your permanent address. Some of your best and brightest have come from humble beginnings. President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, Dwayne Wade, Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and numerous others, just to name

The Gospel Music Cruise, along with parent company Entertainment Cruise Productions (ECP), presented a $15,000 check to the Church Of God In Christ (COGIC) Charities during last week’s Holy Convocation in St. Louis, MO. ECP Director of Physical Fitness and Lifestyle Coach Jackie Joyner-Kersee was on hand to make the donation, joining COGIC Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr., Bishop Edwin Bass and ECP Executive Director Michael Lazaroff at the Holy Convocation’s “We Care” Banquet on November 7th. The Gospel Music Cruise also sponsored a highly anticipated concert by Shirley Caesar during the weeklong event. “The team behind the Gospel Music Cruise wanted to honor the work that the COGIC Charities does around the world,” said ECP Executive Director Michael Lazaroff. “When we found out that the 2015 Holy Convocation would be held in our own city of St. Louis, we jumped at the chance to be a part of it, making our donation to COGIC Charities in person and bringing Shirley Caesar in for a special concert.” The COGIC Charities provides in-

a few, did not allow their birthplace to define their destiny. The first time I ever heard that ‘your job is a ministry,’ I was visiting the Baha’i Temple in the northern suburb of Wilmette, Illinois. My initial thought was ‘this absolutely makes no sense—during that time period, I didn’t like my job or wasn’t fond of the people there.’ As I continued to grow in the Lord, it made more sense that God can use you wherever you are. Just recently I had a light bulb moment. Dr. Paul Cannings of Power Walk Ministries in Houston reminded me that the job is only the resource and not the source. God is the source of all blessings. Don’t complain about the salary, the employer or coworkers. You are there to be a light and testimony of how God always provides even when it appears to the contrary. Praise God and trust Him to be your Jehovah Jireh—for He is the one that provides for you. In

this, God will get the glory. Your life’s purpose is much bigger than your job, your career, your family, your traditions, religion, desires, aspirations, rank or your address. The list is endless. The true purpose of life is to cheerfully give back to God all that He has so freely given to you. When this happens you can expect immediate changes to occur in your life and those around you. Today, begin to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. This is your reasonable service. Are you grateful for this moment…? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Person ality and Motivational Speaker. You can contact her on twitter.com/ effiedrolfe. There is a mixed pricing scale, as is at most theaters where matinees, etc., are lower priced. The trade off for patrons is that the seats are wider and there is more legroom; and you aren’t blasted with what seems like endless commercials playing on the screen before things get started. To this end, another great benefit at ArcLight is the short time allowed for playing trailers before each movie. Trailers are cut down to about half of what are traditionally shown— with only about seven minutes. Afterward, no one is admitted into the theater after the movie actually begins. A Second Chance at Making History PhillipsWildcats two wins away from state title By J. Coyden Palmer The Wendell Phillips’ football team is making another deep run in the state football playoffs and needs two more wins to make history as the first Chicago Public League team to win a state championship. The Wildcats will take on Marengo in the Class 5A semifinal this Saturday, November 21, at Gately Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Phillips defeated Geneso in the quarterfinals 24-7 last week. Last season, Phillips became the first team to reach the championship game since the 1970’s. They lost to Rochester 49-28 but their historic run through the playoffs increased the profile for CPL football and they had high school football fans throughout the city pulling for them. This year head coach Troy McAllister is hoping the experience from getting downstate will serve his team well. But he has been cautioning everyone from looking ahead. “We still have to win one more game before we can even get to the championship game. Maren-

go is a good team too and they will be a tough foe,” McAllister said. Phillips has been dominant all season. They have defeated several teams in higher classes, including fellow CPL school Simeon, which plays in the 8A class, the highest division. McAllister said he tells his team not to focus on the class division they are playing against and just focus on executing. “We understand all of the media attention and I think this year we are handling it a bit better,” he said. “Last season it was new for all of us. Now we have a better understanding of what all of this means and we are focusing better in practice. The guys know when the ball is kicked on Saturday, the only thing that will matter will be what happens on the field.” Quayvon Skanes, the team’s star receiver, said McAllister has brought a family atmosphere to the team, which is the reason for their success. He said players do a lot of things together in school, but after school as well. Skanes said it is a way to keep each other out of trouble and focusing on the things in life that really matter. “There is a lot of bad stuff people can get involved with, but this

Wildcats. Skanes himself will go to UConn next fall. But he said right now all he is thinking about is winning a state championship. “We see that second place trophy every day when we walk into school and we’re tired of it. We need a better one,” he said. Phillips is loaded with seniors

on this year’s team and players say they want to go out on top. They told the Crusader you do not get a lot of chances to win a championship so they must take advantage of the opportunity. “This is it for us,” Skanes said. “It’s now or never and we just want to get the whole city behind us.”
