A grandfather grieves Congressman Danny K. Davis says “It’s hard to believe he’s gone” By Chinta Strausberg “It’s hard to believe he’s gone,” said Representative Danny K. Davis (D-7th) late Sunday night as he reminisced about the short life of his 15-year-old grandson Javon Wilson. Wilson was killed November 18 in his Englewood home because of a disagreement over the swapping of a pair of gym shoes for a pair of pants. Davis, whose political career spans more than 30 years, most notably sponsored the Second Chance Act of 2007(HR 1593). The bill provides transitional assistance to ex-offenders, reducing recidivism and helping to reunite families. It is ironic that Davis, an outspoken critic of the criminal justice system now finds himself so intimately involved with it. In an interview with the Chicago Crusader, Davis spoke at length about the murder of his grandson, but says he also sympathizes with his grandson’s alleged killers, 16-year-old Tarik Harris and 17-year-old Di’Jae Banks. Both were charged with first-degree murder and home invasion, and denied bail. Davis recalled that fatal night, saying he had just come from taping his congressional TV show and was at his West Side office when he received a call from the police. “The police commander told me that a tragedy had taken place (Continued on page 2)

‘Fight for $15’ strike to hit O’Hare on Nov. 29th By J. Coyden Palmer Workers in airports, fast-food restaurants, healthcare and the educational sector are planning the biggest protest in the nation’s history on Nov. 29th when they will walk off their jobs. The announcement came Nov. 21 during a nationwide teleconference sponsored by the “Fight for $15” movement. Those participating in the day of protest say efforts to block wage increases, gut workers’ rights or healthcare, deport immigrants, or support racism or racist policies, will be met with unrelenting opposition. Hundreds of subcontracted baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors and wheelchair atten-

dants at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, the world’s fourth busiest, will strike Nov. 29 to protest against unfair labor practices. Some airlines like Delta, use subcontracted baggage handlers, who make less than $10 an hour with little or no benefits. Those workers cite retaliation, intimidation, threats and harassment by their employers when they attempt to join together to demand at least $15 per hour and union rights, said Kendall Fells, Organizing Director for “Fight for $15.” In contrast, baggage handlers at United, who recently got a raise, have a strong union and receive benefits when they become full time employees after a probation period. “Today’s low-wage airport jobs look a lot like those at McDonald’s, or those in the home care or childcare fields, or even in our factories and universities,” said Oliwia Pac, 24, a wheelchair attendant, security officer and escort for minors

at O’Hare. “This needs to change and we are going to keep joining together and speaking

Wilson expands bail out program nationwide Calls for moratorium on privatizing prisons By Chinta Strausberg After freeing 46 people out of the Cook County Jail for a total of 110 detainees over the last three weeks, business icon Dr. Willie Wilson is now expanding his bail program nationwide and is calling for federal support in banning the privatization of prisons. “I am expanding our program nationally because when I ran for mayor and for the president, I saw that the same problems existed for minorities and poor people around the country. I just want to try to make a difference. Besides, no non-violent offender should languish in jail just because they can’t make bail,” said Wilson. Poverty, Wilson said, “is a major problem, and if I can help get some of them out of jail to prevent them from being exposed to a life in prison where some get raped, it is an honor to do so. Some of them are in jail for stealing food to eat. “I do believe there is discrimination between the rich and the poor. When you’re poor, you don’t have enough money to get out causing taxpayers a lot of money. This is a moral issue. America is not suppose to be about that…locking up people for minor offenses for days,

weeks, months because they are too poor to make bail. “A lot of the detainees have served their country, come home, are homeless, and get locked up. Others are mentally ill, but jails should not be for providing health care. We should send them to institutions rather than locking them up. It just doesn’t make sense,” Wilson said. He added, “The politicians can correct this problem if they just vote on it. I know they say there is no money, but I disagree. They spend billions of dollars overseas in wars. Surely, we can take care of our own citizens first.” Wilson called for a moratorium on privatization of prisons. “Last year, over $2 billion or $3 billion was the profit by private corporations owning prisons. That doesn’t make sense at all. Prisons should not be privatized. You should not be making a profit off locked up people. By the time you get some out, more are going in. That’s immoral. They are not making good wages. I think we are setting an example. I believe in giving them a second chance. I’m just trying to do good.” Wilson is sponsoring a state bill that would prohibit the jailing of non-violent offenders on charges of misdemeanors. He also called on the federal government and Republican President-elect Donald Trump to embrace this legislation.

HUMANITARIAN WILLIE WILSON (center wearing red tie) receives hugs and handshakes thanking him after he recently donated his own money to bail out 46 detainees. A grandfather grieves Congressman Danny K. Davis says “It’s hard to believe he’s gone” (Continued from page 1) and that it did not look good and that my grandson had been shot. I asked him where was it located. He gave me the address and I immediately got in my car” Davis said. In disbelief, Davis called his son who told him his grandson had died. He was driven to his grandson’s home, but said he could not get in because it was a crime scene. He then went to the police station at 727 East 111th Street and waited there for a confirmation. “The police were very kind. They kept me updated and ultimately it was pretty clear that my grandson had died.” In describing Javon, Davis said, “He was funny, amusing, light-hearted, liked to play tricks, play games. He was full of life. He loved basketball, was a real student at the game. He was an athlete…indeed a student of the game. He liked rap music and was a little bit of a rapper himself. He was a sophomore at Perspectives High School.” Davis said his grandson had not yet made up his mind what he wanted to 2

do as an adult other than play basketball. “He was pretty cool. He liked to shop…liked designer stuff…. When I would take him shopping, he wanted to look at everything in the store. I’d tell him, ‘look, select something. I don’t have all day….’” “He liked to make people laugh. He always wanted to play with my telephone and computer. It’s hard to believe that he is gone.” Referring to the accused offenders Harris and Banks, Davis said, “they knocked on the door and broke the lock. They asked who was it and someone answered the door. They kicked their way in. They had a swapping agreement…swapping items like gym shoes for a few days in exchange for a pair of slacks.” Davis said at the center of the disagreement was a pair of trousers that had been swapped for a pair of gym shoes. “The person wanted the items back…. The gym shoes had been swapped for a pair of slacks. The person wanted to make the exchange again, changing her mind and demanding the gym shoes back.”

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2016

“The swap was between the person who was 17 years old (Banks) and a person who was 14,” said Davis, referring to his grandson’s 14-year-old brother. “He is a very big 14. He supposedly had swapped a pair of new slacks he had purchased with this person for the gym shoes. “My grandson’s brother is a big 14, big enough to wear a size 46. This must have been a pretty big girl,” he said referring to Banks. “As they burst into the house, an argument took place and the 17year-old had a gun.” In the midst of the argument, Davis’ grandson was fatally shot. Davis said the police questioned those in the house at the time of the shooting, including his grandson’s sister, and two brothers, ages 8 and 14. In reacting to his grandson’s death, Davis said, “I thought it was so unfortunate but the thing that has occurred is that I have spoken with literally hundreds of people who have called me or sent condolences or visited me at my home. He said some had a prayer vigil in front of his office, like Rev. Paul Jakes, a longtime ally.

“I have had expressions of regret from the superintendent of police, the mayor, other law enforcement officials, the States Attorney, Senators Dick Durbin, Senator Mark Kirk, Tammy Duckworth, the entire Congressional Black Caucus, the leadership of the Democrats of the House, the former president of the U.S. called.” “People have been so kind, so gracious,” said Davis. “I can’t be bitter. I’m remorseful. I hate that it happened. I know that the culprits are in custody, but I feel sorry for them as opposed to dealing any other way. I feel sorry for their families just as I feel sorry for my family and all of the lives that have been disrupted” said Davis. “I am not excited that they are in custody. I am not wishing anything bad to happen to them. I feel they have a right to be protected as they go through the judicial system. I feel like we have to put forth every effort that we possibly can to try and prevent these occurrences from taking place. We’ve got to have stronger enforcement to keep guns out of the hands

of children, teenagers….” Davis said he doesn’t understand how youth can get their hands on a gun and said what we should be doing with the youth is to teach them how to value life. “We have so many guns around. It’s unbelievable that 13, 14…year-old kids have guns. That ought not be. We ought to have a way to keep that from taking place. I’m frustrated, but I’m searching, looking for every avenue that we can find to try and prevent these occurrences from taking place and to improve the quality of life in our community rather than see it deteriorate.” “I try to teach my grandchildren not to be on the aggressive end of things, not to hurt people but rather to help them…to love rather than to hate…. It’s hard to believe my grandson is gone.” Funeral services for Representative Davis’ grandson Javon Wilson will be held Saturday, November 26, 2016, at the Cary Tercentenary African American Episcopal Church, 1448 S. Homan Avenue. The wake is at 10:00 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m. www.chicagocrusader.com

THANKSGIVING OPPORTUNITIES IN AMERICA The American populace, and other interested persons around the world, are still reeling from the effects of the recent presidential election. There has been a political shift that is seemingly manifested in other parts of the world. Brexit is just one example. A lot of people are talking about fleeing circumstances; it has been said that Americans were planning to move in droves to Canada. Others are looking around the world for other suitable places. Certainly, a Trump presidency brings to mind the situation that European Jews faced during the Hitler regime in World War II. But the world is different today; we are hopefully wiser and history won’t repeat itself, which brings us to the next point. In spite of all of the changes that are taking place around us, there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. That bright light, for which we can be really thankful, is the power of mind, and its connection to faith (heart). This is not so much whistling in the wind; there is an escape hatch to the challenges that we face. No matter how low we go, we can always find a way up and out, if we connect our desires with the power of our minds. This is a wonderful gift that is available to humanity, and which is why it is possible to fight oppression. African Americans have suffered greatly in America, but if the truth be told, have suffered around the world. Black people represent the greatest and least of existence; even though they have experienced the great slavery of poverty, Black people have also gained prominence and mastery of many disciplines. So, what is the difference between those who achieve a modicum of success and those who don’t? It could very well be connected to the fact that because of their experience and their heart/mind connection, they have been able to put themselves on the road to success in spite of challenges. As Americans, this is something that we should remember as we traverse uncertain times. America is still a democracy, which is a good thing. We can determine our collective destiny. This is also true of the Black community – our situation in this country and elsewhere can be influenced by our collective action. We can WILL our circumstances; the trick however, is that we have to come to believe that this option is true. There are precedents for this notion, and master teachings throughout the ages have delivered this message. The following is just one that is taken from The Gospel According to Mark: “For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, ‘Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea’; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” ” This passage is just one of many that have been handed down to humanity as guideposts for living. When we look around us, it is easy to see why things are somewhat chaotic. We tend to forget that attitudes are more important than circumstances, and that we reap what we sow. We have also often forgotten the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” That rule alone would instantly change our collective circumstances. Imagine what our communities would be like if we followed these simple rules. Black on Black murder would cease and we would spend money with each other because we would understand that our destinies are connected. We must remember these ideas as we embark upon the Thanksgiving Holiday during strange times. We can be thankful that there are still possibilities for positive change if we make the decision to take advantage of opportunities like voting, for example. During this last election, a lot of African Americans did not bother to go to the polls. That was a missed opportunity to control our destiny. The good thing, however, is that in a democracy, we will always get another chance to get it right. With this said, the Crusader wishes for you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Sometimes the world of finance can be a bit confusing. At other times it simply doesn’t make sense. The latter is what I am seeing with this new DePaul University Arena next door to McCormick Place. What is so puzzling personally is how in the world is this private university allowed to make money off of a public deal. It smells funny to me and I am sure Crusader readers will write if my thinking doesn’t make sense. The city kicked in half the cost to build the $165-million, 10,000-seat arena. The other half was paid by the university. The other day, DePaul sold the arena’s naming rights to Wintrust Bank. Selling naming rights has become a staple in the sports world. It seems though that since the city, or at least one of its agencies is involved, some of the naming rights dollars should be directed that way. It also appears that Chicago taxpayers are paying for something twice and getting nothing in return. I am old enough to remember when DePaul basketball was the highlight of Chicago winters. That was when they were near fix-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Does this deal smell funny to you too? Dear Editor:

tures in the NCAA post-season tournament. These days we rarely hear anything about them other than they lost another game. So, if the team and subsequently the arena aren’t going to be big tourist draws or attracting the attention and participation of most Chicagoans, why do taxpayers have to foot the bill, and get shut out on the naming rights revenue? It would be different if it was a public university, with affordable tuition and a winning team. We are talking about a Catholic institution, and no one has ever called the Catholic Church poor. The university should have been made to foot the entire bill, as well as ante up some of the naming rights money from Wintrust. From where I sit the $82 million the city pumped into a basketball arena could have been better spent on projects on the West Side or South Side of Chicago. How long are Chicagoans going to allow these sections of the city to be ignored? I mean seriously, some of the areas on the West Side haven’t been touched since the riots in the late 60s. What is wrong with putting in something that benefits the community along that fallow stretch of State Street at 63rd Street and running north for six or seven blocks? We have to get our priorities back in order in this town. I simply can’t see making life easy for DePaul as one of them.

Please don’t let this become political fodder Dear Editor: I want to put your readers on (Continued on page 7)

Number 673 is Special Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford It was November 19, Saturday night in Chicago, Illinois. That means one thing is certain. People will be murdered. It goes without saying. Chicago is one of the most fatalistic cities in our nation. It is a city that has some of the strictest gun possession laws, but that doesn’t matter to “Chi-Town.” From sundown Friday to sunrise Monday there will be dozens of assaults leading to murder, manslaughter and miscellaneous savagery. During the evening of November 19, murder number 673 will occur. It is so cold to frame it this way, when to the family and friends of number 673 it will be devastating. The family and friends of number 673 will be featured in every newspaper in the nation, not just Chicago. Jovan Wilson is this victim’s name. Jovan, a 15-yearold, happens to be the grandson of the Honorable Danny Davis who is the US Congressman for Chicago’s 7th Congressional District. In Chicago and in Washington, DC, Davis is known as a

very distinguished leader and is well known to millions – including me and my family. This is the nightmare that every Black family fears. Your Black teenage child out at night where he could be in danger, like an antelope grazing the Masai Mara Plains in Kenya. Danger is around and it can be lethal. But number 673 wasn’t your typical homicide. Jovan was arguing with two acquaintances over the possession of pants and tennis shoes. One thing led to another and fists were swinging and in the end a pistol came out and was fired. Now Jovan is dead and two other young people may be spending the rest of their lives in prison. It is a tragedy for all involved. May God bless the three young peoples’ families, especially the Davis family. Danny is such a caring leader and I know his grandson’s violent death at such a tender age is taking a heavy toll on him. Not too long ago, Illinois State Senator Mattie Hunter experienced a similar tragedy with her two nephews. They were out in Chicago on a Saturday night and were murdered. Is anyone ex-

Harry C. Alford empt in Chicago and other urban areas throughout our nation? No, there is no guarantee for any of our families. When our leaders’ families can suffer the same way as any of us, when even police officers become targets, it is time to come together and say “stop the violence!” It seems like common sense

should help control this matter. But no, that doesn’t work. Making guns illegal will not work either. Like I said earlier, there is something very mysterious about this issue. It is some kind of selection process. One human being has no regard for others and will instantly kill another mother’s child. How do we get so evil and callous? As songwriter Maurice White of the Earth, Wind, and Fire band would say, “a child is born with a heart of gold, the ways of the world will turn that heart stone cold.” Our churches and clergy should step up a little higher in preaching the Gospel. Our school teachers and administrators must demand discipline amongst the students they oversee. Our police must be wise and prudent as they protect the “peace” in our communities. Our courts must have the “wisdom of Solomon” as they apply the law equally and for the benefit of all. Finally, our parents must give love and guidance to their children and grandchildren. There is no doubt in my mind that the Davis family provided such love and guidance. It appears impossible to uphold a smooth and abid-

ing societal process, as simple as it sounds in the Ten Commandments. But somehow we collectively disregard the rule of God’s law. My goodness people, our Creator knew what he was doing when he had Moses deliver it to us. Maybe this time we will get serious. I mean more than reading at church next Sunday and then spending the rest of the week absent of what you pledged on Sunday (do you?). There is just too much hate. We are too quick to throw pain at someone and too heartless to help another human being who may be hurt. May Chicago’s murder number 673 be more than just a sad statistic. He was a child of God and it would be such a shame if we just walk on as if nothing happened. Right now, let’s all give a deep prayer for the Davis family. These things don’t have to happen if we begin to live “Pure of Heart.” Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. What will you lose if consumer financial protection goes away? By Charlene Crowell As Americans adjust to the realities wrought by the recent elections, one of the most important consequences has yet to be fully explored: the future of consumer financial protection. Many successful candidates in the recent election repeatedly claimed that over-regulation, too much bureaucracy or both were harming the economy. In their view, the nation needed to let businesses operate unhindered and free from regulatory constraints. Additionally, many of the same forces that years ago opposed Wall Street regulation and the creation of a consumer watchdog never gave up their quest to weaken or dismantle the only governmental agency whose sole purpose was to protect consumers. The problem with both of these views is that as Wall Street made billions, America’s people suffered and lost: jobs, homes, credit standing and financial assets. The only thing that seemed to grow during the Great Recession was the amount of debt consumers faced and reckoned with at kitchen tables across the country. This column has previously shared how millions of Americans’ losses were at their worst from 2004 through 2015. Others who may have held on to their homes lost so

much value that they continue to owe more than their homes are now worth. There are also still others who thought they were enrolling in higher education to better their lives and earnings sadly discovered that heavy student loan debt was the only thing they incurred at for-profit colleges – many whose doors are now closed. For all of these reasons and more, our nation still needs the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), its consumer cop on the block. In the coming months we must remain watchful for legislation and executive actions that would reverse the financial justice accomplished over the past five years. Case in point: CFPB’s Director Richard Cordray has a term of service set to conclude in July of 2018. However an October 2016 ruling by a panel of three judges with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said the President could remove CFPB’s director for cause. The nation’s President-elect might want his own director – particularly if the court decision is upheld on appeal. Similarly, legislation that sought to end both CFPB’s governance by a single director and funding independent of Congress may be revived as an early priority for the next Congress. It was legislative wisdom that avoided both approaches in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform

www.chicagocrusader.coM

Act. Commission forms of governance work by majority and can lead to gridlock instead of timely actions. Secondly, as commission members are nominated, lawmakers may refuse to act. If CFPB were to become a part of the annual appropriation process, the Bureau could be denied the necessary funding to do its legally mandated work. More importantly, special interest lobbyists could exert their influence on lawmakers to attach limitations on the Bureau’s work, blocking CFPB from its ability to rein in abusive practices. These kinds of DC insider maneuvers have repeatedly and unfortunately affected other federal agencies. Consumer financial justice should never be subject to the rise and fall of deep-pocket lobbyists motivated by profits instead of fairness. Then there are CFPB’s pending regulations like debt collection, overdraft, payday lending and other small dollar loans. An unprecedented number of consumer and civil rights advocates have clearly and consistently weighed in on these issues. Although public comment may have concluded, final regulations have yet to be announced. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is widely credited for proposing CFPB to President Obama is one of the few who has already spoken up about all that is at risk. A

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Charlene Crowell November 15 letter to the President-elect urged him to serve all consumers. “Americans are angry about a federal government that works for the rich and powerful and that leaves everyone else in the dirt,” wrote Senator Warren. Separately and in a recent blog, Warren also wrote, “Let’s be clear about what rebuilding our economy does not mean. It does not mean handing the keys to our economy over to Wall Street so they can

run it for themselves. Americans want to hold the big banks accountable.” And as a consumer, if you’re wondering ‘what you have to lose’ when it comes to CFPB, consider these recent data points on Bureau achievements: • $3.6 billion in monetary compensation to consumers as a result of enforcement actions; • $7.7 billion in additional in principal reductions, cancelled debts, and other consumer relief; • 1,000,000 complaints handled as of September 1, 2016; and • 3,400 colleges voluntarily adopting the CFPB and Department of Education’s Financial Aid Shopping Sheet. “Any efforts to change CFPB’s structure would reduce its effectiveness and harm hard working people across the country,” noted Mike Calhoun, president of the Center for Responsible Lending. I would add that consumers who have been financially harmed are more interested in justice than in deliberation or special exemptions for favored industries. Charlene Crowell is the communications deputy director with the Center for Responsible Lending. She can be reached at Charlene.crowell@responsiblelending.org.

THEY STILL OWE US! Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill Day-by-day, African people in America are becoming more familiar with the concept of reparations and what it means to our continued struggle in America for self-determination, liberation, independence, and freedom. Therefore, we must be clear that reparations means “repair” for the damages inflicted on a people or a nation. In pursuit of this repair, we are conscious of the fact we must engage in the process and assume responsibility for repairing ourselves, which includes: changing the way we think, support-

ing our own institutions (particularly financially), supporting our families, supporting our own Black business enterprises, cleaning up our communities, and changing the way we relate to and think of each other as a people. These are just a few of the internal repairs we must constantly work on. In this connection, part of our internal repair is to struggle, fight, mobilize, and organize to demand external reparations from those governments, corporations, and institutions that are responsible for our historical and continuing state of oppression. Just as Jewish people proclaim, “Never Forget,” African people should do no less! We should “Never Forget” that “They Owe Us!” Part of our internal repair is to consciously understand that “We Are Owed” and that we have a historic responsibility to demand reparations from those forces of white supremacy that continue to benefit from what they did to us and that lingers on as part of the vestiges of our enslavement. As we continue to organize around the issue of reparations, we should be clear that “They Owe Us”for: 1. The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery: The United Nations World Conference Against Racism declared that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery were Crimes Against Humanity. Crimes against humanity have no statute of limitations. 2.The Expropriation of Our La-

bor: For more than 250 years, we were forced to work for free. Our free labor was a major ingredient in the building of the United States and its wealth as a nation. Also, the thousands of white individuals and their families that accumulated wealth and continue to this day to benefit from this free labor. 3. The Slave Code Laws: The slave owners developed their own codes of what they could do to enslaved African people in America that permeated throughout the emergence of this country. In many ways, informal slave codes exist today (racial profiling). 4. The Destruction of the African Family: The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery had a devastating impact on destroying and dismantling African families. 5. The Raping of African Women: Our capture and enslavement provided white men with the power to rape African women and girls by the thousands without reprisal. 6. The Fugitive Slave Laws: When our enslaved ancestors resisted their enslavement and fled plantations, the government of this country sanctioned laws and policies that supported the capture and return of so-called “runaway slaves,” enslaved Africans. The Dred Scott Decision should be consulted to fully understand the implications of the Fugitive Slave Laws. 7. The Colonizing of Our African Culture: Created systems by law and societal practices that forbade African

people, in our captured state, to engage in our traditional spiritual and cultural practices. 8. The KKK Night Riders and Lynchings: The Ku Klux Klan was established in the late 1860s as a secret society whose mission was to exterminate, by any means necessary, African people in America. They were known to have been responsible for the lynching, and murdering of thousands of African men, women, and children. 9. The 13th and 14th Constitutional Amendments: The abolishment of slavery was really a constitutional scam and the 14th Amendment that allegedly made African people citizens of America was imposed on us. We were never asked if we wanted to be citizens. 10. We Were Denied Our 40 Acres and Our Mule: We didn’t get it! We were sold down the river and the land was given to white confederate soldiers. 11. The Jim Crow Laws: The Jim Crow Policies of the United States of America became the fabric and foundation of American society after the period of Reconstruction. Jim Crow Laws and Policies reinforced the foundation of white supremacy and Black inferiority in every aspect of American society. 12. The Fighting and Dying in Imperialist and White Supremacist Wars: We fought and died and continue to fight and die for the freedoms

of others and were/are denied our own freedoms and civil rights. 13. The Assassination of Black Leaders: Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Fred Hampton, and Mark Clark to name a few. 14. COINTELPRO: This was a government program, established by the FBI under the direction of J. Edgar Hoover, designed to destroy the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. 15. The Crack Epidemic: Research reveals that the United States Government, through the CIA, targeted Black communities for the dispensing of Crack Cocaine. 16. The Criminalizing of Our Youth: It should be obvious that the aim of the Prison Industrial Complex is to Criminalize Our Youth to insure a young and viable work force for this multibillion-dollar industry. 17. The Jailing of Our Freedom Fighters: The incarcerating of our Freedom Fighters, thus, making them political prisoners. 18 & 19. Centuries of MisEducation and Mental Atrocities: This has caused serious damage to our people, which continues to cause much mental confusion about our true reality as an African people in America and around the world. No matter how controversial it may be in these economic times, we as African people in the United States of America are “Still Owed!”

WILL REPUBLICANS PREVAIL IN 2018? By Julianne Malveaux The apprehension that I felt upon Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election has only increased as he has announced the appointments of his chief of staff, strategist, and cabinet members. As of this writing, he has mainly announced the selection of older white men, including the racist Alabama Senator, Jeff Sessions, to lead the Justice Department. The senator’s use of highly inflammatory racial rhetoric (including describing the NAACP as an “un-American” organization, and expressing support for the KKK) prevented his confirmation to the US District Court in 1986. Now, he will be charged with law enforcement in our nation. Equally troubling has been the selection of Stephen Bannon, his campaign chairman, as chief White House strategist and senior counselor. Bannon is the Executive Chairman of Breitbart News, a news site that has been the home of the alt-right, the source of lies, hate, nastiness and racist rhetoric. President Barack Obama had to walk away from Minister Jeremiah Wright because one of his sermons was considered racist by some 6

whites. Trump openly embraces racists and is applauded for it. The position that Bannon will hold does not require Senate confirmation, while the position that Sessions will be nominated for does. With 54 Republicans in the Senate, Sessions is almost certain to be nominated. Hopefully Democrats have retained enough of a backbone to raise questions about Sessions’ racism. Senate newcomers Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Catherine Cortez Masto (DNV) may be among the first to raise the questions. Still, Republicans will have the votes to confirm anyone they want to confirm. Welcome to the age of Trump. Will Republicans get more of an edge in the Senate when we go to the polls in 2018? Thirty-three Senate seats will be up for grabs then. Republicans hold only eight. Independents Bernie Sanders (VT) and Angus King (ME), who caucus and vote with Democrats are both likely to be candidates for re-election. A whopping 23 seats are currently held by Democrats. If some of the states that went Republican in this year’s election can be tilted, Republicans can widen their margin in the Senate. The Trump campaign (and its affiliated SuperPACS) have as much as

Dr. Julianne Malveaux $60 million to spend, and can use it to build ground operations in states where Democrats closely lost this year. (Hillary and her affiliated SuperPACS may have as much as $70 million to spend). Democrats lost Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona by less than five percent. Incumbent Democrats Tammy Baldwin (WI), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Bob Casey (PA), Joe Donnelly (IN), Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota), Joe

Manchin (WV), Bill Nelson (FL), and Debbie Stabenow (MI) are all in states that Republicans won in 2016. While many of them are popular, and incumbency is a challenging thing to overcome, we’ve just seen that the right kind of Republican rhetoric can prevail. These candidates, and the Democratic Party, can’t afford to take incumbency or popularity for granted. They can’t afford to savor a polling lead and conclude that they don’t have to fight for every vote. If these folks want to go back to Washington, they’ll learn from the Hillary Clinton loss and work indefatigably, starting now, to keep their seats. They’ll make lots of visits back home, host town hall meetings, and make sure their voters understand what their contributions have been and what challenges they face. If Trump and his team can brag of results, if his actions are perceived as “making American great again,” then incumbent Democrats may be in trouble. Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, also on the ballot, has described Democrats in the Senate as the “emergency brake” on Trump’s policy proposals. I expect them to vocally take Trump and his team on when they revert to the racist

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

rhetoric and proposed racist, misogynistic, and jingoistic policies that Trump promoted during the campaign. Will they? They may not want to be perceived as obstructionists (though Republicans surely didn’t mind being obstructionists with President Obama), and they will certainly need to pick their battles carefully. But they must speak out. Mid-term election turnout is always extremely low – it was just 36 percent in 2014, the lowest level in 70 years. Democrats must start now to educate and encourage people to turn out for the midterm elections. And voting rights organizations must begin now to reverse the voter suppression that kept millions from voting on November 8. If Democrats don’t get busy now, Republicans will, indeed, prevail in 2018. So let’s stop wringing our hands and moaning. Let’s get busy! Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. IT’S WAKE UP TIME We all have had enough time to fully go through all the stages of grieving and it’s time to get up off our knees and kick butt!! If for one moment you think Donald Trump has changed from his venomous rhetoric where he planned to make “America Great Again,” code for putting Black folks in their place in the back again; Mexicans, Hispanics and Latino’s in an immigration deportation line; and as a matter of fact he may try to use free labor like

was used during slavery times; he’s going to use his children to reap the benefits he will get from the deals he will make world-wide; he will treat women the way he said in the Access Hollywood tape; and old white nationalists will continue to chant “Heil Trump.” Now we did not vote like we should have in the general election so dere better not be any pfooting around this time. We had better be on the case and resist at every turn. Otherwise get ready to drain the swamp in Washington, D.C. and help build the Mexican fence for FREE!!! -ImaWELL, I NEVER!!! Whosenever heard of the President of the United States settling a fraud case for $25 million on the eve of his inauguration. That’s what Trump has done and the rumbling never got above a small roar from the mainstream media and the United States Congress (except our Black Caucus member Maxine Wa-

ters). Already Trump has the mainstream press at bey ‘cause they are skeered that they won’t be allowed into the press conferences to hear his out of the box craziness. Take a word from the Black Press, being excluded ain’t so bad, ‘cause the Black Press has been barred from the President’s press conferences for the last eight years. Now they will probably say that’s not true, cause they called those slick magazines, especially the ones owned by whites, as the Black Press. Here is a man who has tricked millions out of the hard earned

New board members are being

added to the Obama Library ever so slowly, but already you know what it is going to be. A haven for Obama’s bourgeois friends. One thing is for sure Trump ain’t giving a damn about them and when they come for Ima they are going to come for them in the same old raggedy truck. Sometimes our folks need to get real and the new up-and-coming radicals are going to show them that they’re hustling ways and days are over!!! The majority of us are on the outside looking in and if Trump has his way there won’t be any difference between us.

The Path Forward By Congresswoman Robin Kelly The Presidential elections were jarring to say the least. While nearly 1.7 million more Americans voted for Secretary Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump ultimately received enough electoral college votes to become our next President. I haven’t been shy in expressing my disappointment in the outcome of this election. In reflecting on this year’s race, I have come away assured that we cannot allow the anger, frustration, and hostility that have dominated our political discussion to drag us deeper

into a chasm of division. We must hold President-Elect Trump and Congressional Republicans accountable. We cannot allow them to undo President Obama’s remarkable legacy. Like many Americans, my concerns with the course of the incoming Trump Administration were intensified with his decision to name Steve Bannon, an alt-right conservative associated with extremist and nationalist views, as chief strategist. Likewise, the selecting of Senator Jeff Sessions, a man rejected from a federal judgeship because of his racial-

ly insensitive comments, to lead efforts to protect civil rights and voting rights is deeply troubling. Trump’s discussions of a national registry of Americans based solely on their religion and his recent appointments run counter to our nation’s highest ideals. This would re-open a dark chapter in our history that has no place in 2016. So the important question we must confront now is: “Where do we go from here? Who do we want to be as Americans?” Civil Rights hero Ella Baker said “give light and people will find the

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) alert because I have been watching this local political system for too long without speaking up. I can tell you all, that soon the mayor in his attempt to get a third term, will start talking about how much he has done for veterans-especially when it comes to homelessness. Don’t believe a word of it. Yes, the city recently did receive more than $1 million for two projects, one on the West Side and one on the South Side, to pay for affordable housing for homeless, military veterans. The mayor’s role in securing that funding was negligible at best. You see, HUD and the Department of Veterans Affairs were going to hand out $18.5 million across the country. I believe 39 or

40 housing agencies received homeless veteran funding. Listen to Rahm Emanuel though, it sounds like he presented some great plan to federal officials and they decided to send a million bucks our way. The mayor has to make it a bigger deal personally than it is because he is running for re-election. He needs to put as many feathers in his hat as soon as possible between now and the 2019 Election Day. No doubt we are all glad more housing will be available to veterans currently living in shelters or on the streets. We also are glad the federal government saw fit to include Chicago in its funding plans. That is what the mayor should be saying, instead of the ‘look at me. Look what I did,’ scenario we are getting. He doesn’t seem to understand that applause

www.chicagocrusader.coM

isn’t warranted when you are merely doing your job. Those come when you go above and beyond. I hardly believe this latest housing allocation fits that bill. Like all federal funding, this homeless veteran allocation comes as vouchers. The city received 150 of them this time. The city now has more than 1,300 of these veteran vouchers and hopefully they are putting them in the hands of the right people right now. It is truly unfortunate that the mayor is using the less fortunate as a political prop to advance his own career. Just like the photo ops he insists on with little Black kids. I guess we should be used to his opportunistic ways by now. I don’t believe we are though. Miles Blanchard

Congresswoman Robin Kelly way.” In these dark times, we must look to the light and have faith in one another. We must trust in ourselves and in our communities because it’s on us to stand up for justice, to bridge the divides, and construct a more perfect union. We can and must respond to the pleas of disaffected communities across the county by uniting under a commonality of optimism and presenting a plan for our future that offers a solution to that which diminishes us. Over the last eight years, President Obama has shown us this by his example. As the First Lady remarked: “Barack never lets himself get distracted by the chatter and the noise…he just keeps getting up and moving forward... with patience and wisdom, and courage and grace.” Like our President, we must forge ahead. We cannot be divided or distracted, too much is at stake. We must keep pushing until every child in America has an equal opportunity to live the American Dream.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

We must keep demanding justice and action until our trust is restored in those who have sworn an oath to uphold our public safety and security. We must keep fighting to secure the economic security, health and civil rights of our fellow Americans, regardless of who they are, where they come from, what God they pray to or who they love. For those of us dissatisfied with the outcome of this year’s election, we have work to do. The 2018 mid-term may seem a long road to travel and the 2020 presidential election is an even longer road. But it’s a road that we must travel together. Our ideas must inspire us; our actions must sustain us; and our values must make us credible around the world. In an era where public servants take pride in their effort to slow progress and hold our government hostage, we need leaders willing to fight twice as hard. People in elected office and people around the country must stand up for the future of our families and the most vulnerable. We will not fear though the road ahead may be long or bumpy. Things that matter and change us for the better don’t have shortcuts. The Montgomery Bus Boycott did not last a day or a week; it took 381 days for justice to take hold. With patience, grace, courage and wisdom in our hearts, and our hands united like never before, it’s a road that we will traverse as one people, one community. We’ve simply come too far to allow the clock to be turned back.

Designed by William Gibbons Uffendell, the bank originally opened in 1923 and operated for nearly six decades, anchoring the then-bustling Stony Island Avenue on Chicago’s South Side. Its restoration has been one of the city’s most dynamic preservation projects: repairing the crumbling façade and stabilizing and reconstructing the interior down to the flooded basement vault. The space reopened in October 2015 as the Stony Island Arts Bank, which houses art exhibitions and cultural programs. The Arts Bank has hosted more than 13,000 visitors since reopening and has established itself as a neighborhood anchor once more. “While each is unique, this year’s outstanding Driehaus Award winners all reflect the importance of protecting our nation’s cultural heritage,” said Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “From a prominent Venetian Gothic building along Chicago’s Michigan Avenue to a 19th century whaling ship in Connecticut, this year’s Driehaus Award winners demonstrate how saving places bol-

CUL’s Golden Fellowship Dinner-Centennial Edition raises $2.65 M Chicago Urban League CEO Challenges Conversations about Race On Sunday night nearly 1,700 supporters of the Chicago Urban League gathered at the Chicago Urban League’s Golden Fellowship Dinner – Centennial Edition to commemorate the organization’s 100 years of service to the community. On Nov. 29 hosted by comedian Damon Williams, the sold-out event raised a record-setting $2.65M and culminated with a phenomenal performance by the legendary Diana Ross. Chicago Urban League President and CEO Shari Runner challenged the crowd of business leaders, human rights advocates, philanthropists and elected officials to have serious conversations about racism in order to change its false narrative about African Americans and create a more equitable Chicago. “The League has never shied away from leading difficult conversations or defending the rights our ancestors fought and died for, and we never will, no matter how insurmountable the odds may seem,” said Runner. “We’ve arrived at the apex, facing our racial moment of truth – are we going to continue providing an alibi to the historical and current role of racism, or are we going to finally tear it up from its roots?” The night was filled with other unforgettable moments including the presentation of the Bill C. Berry Award to longtime Chicago businessman and civil rights activist Spencer Leak, Sr. of Leak and Sons Funeral Homes. Past League Presidents James Compton, Cheryle Jackson and newly appointed Deputy Mayor Andrea Zopp were recognized for their roles in moving the League’s mission forward. A newly created individual service award was presented to and named for long-time Chicago Urban League board member, volunteer, and civic and business leader Lester H. McKeever. As chronicled in a feature video featuring several clients, funds raised from the dinner will support the Chicago Urban League’s programs, which serve more than 10,000 Chicago residents annually, including Student Development Center, Workforce Development, Human Capital, Housing and Financial Empowerment, Entrepreneurship and IMPACT Leadership Development. “As I look around at this gathering of friends, Board members, colleagues, partners and passionate advocates for a stronger African American community and a better Chicago, there can be no clearer certainty that change comes because people make it happen,” said Runner. Guests bid on silent auction items, explored artists studios, and entered to win an art collection of 5x7 works on paper by over 50 Chicago artists. Following the cocktail hour guests indulged in dinner along with a testimonial by Art Center alumnus Ariel Guerra before the paddle raise, led by Board Chair Richard Wright and gala co-chair Ian Gray. Following dinner, guests returned upstairs for the Art Center’s official After Party. Guests celebrated with cocktails, dessert, music, and artist activities presented by the Youth Art Board, Alberto Aguilar, James Britt, Jason Dunda, William Estrada, Paul Hopkin, James Jankowiak, Chad Kouri, Sarah Nishiura, Rhonda Wheatley, and Tintin Wulia. someone who would be protesting interracial marriage instead of fighting for it. He is a pale complexioned, buzz cut white guy who is truly in love with this dainty, soft spoken woman of color. Ruth Negga embodies the spirit of Mildred Loving. Soft, beautiful, yet strong and determined to fight for recognition of the love she and Richard have for one another, their children, and family. The film is well written and the actors are superb. People who grew up during these times of segregation may have a different reaction to the film than those of today where interracial marriage and children are totally accepted. I admit to having flashbacks to a time in the south where my fair skinned cousin couldn’t walk next to her dark skinned father without being harassed. This film is not for small children but will be a great opening for discussion with your pre-teen and above. SPEND THE MONEY and see LOVING in the theaters. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking A Day of Giving Thanks. Give Thanks with a Grateful heart. Obviously, it’s possible to give thanks without heartfelt gratitude. I immediately thought of the fast approaching Thanksgiving Holiday as I listened to lyrics of this song “Give thanks with a grateful heart, Give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.” Praise is a simple thank you— for those who may have difficulty, continue to read and maybe a few verses from various songs may trigger your memory and inspire you to be grateful for your life. There are so many reasons to give God praise. One of my favorite gospel classics reminds us to ‘be grateful— there’s someone worse off than you—be grateful—there’s someone who would love to be in your shoes.’ As the saying goes—one man’s trash is another person’s treasure. If we would stop and reflect on the beauty of life, it is inevitable not to see treasures hidden right in your face. James Oppenheim stated, “The foolish

Effie Rolfe man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grows it under his feet.” My message continues—stop and smell the roses while you can. I’ve learned to

appreciate the simple things in life and not take anything for granted. My vow is to wake up giving God immediate thanks. Each time my eyes awaken to the dawning of another day, most times even before my feet hit the floor—I freely offer praise as the fruit of my lips. Too many alarms clocks sound never to be heard because someone’s soul has gone cold—I have to say thank you. I’m convinced that you should embrace God’s amazing grace, family, friends, health, favor, goodness, hope, joy, love, mercy, peace, prosperity, purpose, redemption, salvation and wealth. Unfortunately, too often, we fail to recognize and enjoy the benefits of God’s blessings each day. Just as God is eternal—so are his blessings. They are inexhaustible with more to be revealed each day waiting for you to experience. However, it begins with praise in your heart and lips—which is a catalyst opening up the fountain of God’s very best. I may not be what I ought to be but thank God I’m not what I used to be is

more than mere words. I think about how His patience and love has led me safely through the storms of life. When I shed selfish tears because of my own wrongful conviction and stinking thinking—I have to thank God for a changed mind. Through the tears, I say thank you Lord when he beckons me to let go and let God work it out in His own time and way—since He sees our beginning, end and all in between. Our heavenly Father has been so kind to my family as he brought us a mighty long ways from the fields and gravel roads of Arkansas into a much better life of peace and manifested blessings. On my compass, all songs lead to praise—the one thing that doesn’t cost anything is to open your mouth, wave your hand, tap your toe, wiggle you finger, smile…do something to indicate thankfulness to God and His many blessings. It’s been said the universe loves a grateful heart. Just as you appreciate when people acknowledge your kindness, so does God. I remember the mothers of the

church saying you can’t beat God giving…no matter how hard you try. ‘Thank you Lord for all you’ve done for me’ is another favorite song recorded by the late Bishop Walter Hawkins. The lyrics make me think either people often forget or simply have a difficult time expressing themselves of the many blessings that God generously bestows each day. As for me, all I can say is, Thank you Lord for all you have done for me. Remember, Thanksgiving is not the only day to give thanks, we should practice giving thanks daily. Have you given thanks today? © Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. Youc an contact her on twitter.com/effiedrolfe. Heartbreaking Loss in Overtime Ends Phillips Season By J. Coyden Palmer The Phillips Wildcats’ attempt to defend their Class 4A division football title ended last week after a 23-20 loss in overtime to Johnsburg High School. The Johnsburg Skyhawks (13-0) from northeast McHenry County had previously lost to Phillips in the state playoffs for two consecutive years. But this time the third time was indeed the charm. It was not an easy win as both teams left everything they had on the field. Adam Jayko’s 25-yard field goal for Johnsburg on their first possession was the difference in the game, as the Skyhawks sacked quarterback J’Bore Gibbs on Phillips’ OT possession ending the game. “All the time you think that, and as a kicker you dream of these moments,” said Jayko after his game-winning heroics. Kamari Mosby led Phillips with 251 yards rushing on 39 carries and two touch-

downs. But the Wildcats committed three fumbles and had a rash of penalties that hurt them, even though they outplayed Johnsburg for much of the game. “This one hurts because we beat ourselves more than anything else,” said Phillips Coach Troy McAllister. “But you have to give the other team credit, they took advantage of our mistakes during regulation time and came up with the defensive stance they needed in overtime to beat us.” Phillips arrived to the game late because of heavy traffic, which delayed the start by 15 minutes. McAllister said that delay put his team behind the eight-ball from the start. He said teams have a routine and sometimes when the routine is thrown off, it affects the play on the field. “I think it contributed to our sloppy play on the field,” he said. “We made some uncharacteristic mistakes and unfortunately it happened in the state semifinals.”

‘Fight for $15’ strike to hit O’Hare out until it does.” Fells said while the workers at O’Hare will go on strike, workers at other airports will walk out as a sign of support for the day of protest. It is not yet known how the strike will affect travelers at O’Hare, especially during the busiest travel time of the year. A spokesperson for the airport said they have been made aware of the planned work stoppage and are putting together a contingency plan to ensure the safety of everyone at the airport. The election of Donald Trump to the presidency earlier this month has sent a panic through working class Americans as many people are uncertain what a Trump administration will mean for the nation. The President-Elect’s divisive rhetoric during the campaign and his early cabinet appointments are not sitting well with many Americans, as protests against Trump continue around the country. With the costs for child care, education and other vital services for parents skyrocketing, those at the bottom of the wage earning scale are bracing for the worst. “Americans are united around our desire for a better future for our kids and an economy that works for everyone, not just

(Continued from page 1) those at the top,” said Betty Douglas, a McDonald’s worker from St. Louis, Mo. who is paid $7.90 an hour after eight years on the job. “We are also protesting to reject the politics of divisiveness that tears America apart by race, religion, ethnicity and gender. And we won’t back down until the economy is fixed for all workers and we win justice for all people in our nation.” Even those who work in the field of higher education say they are not being paid appropriately for the work they do. Scott Barish is a graduate assistant at one of the most prestigious and costly universities in the country, Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. But despite the prestige of working at Duke, Barish said he is often disrespected on his job by colleagues, something he feels is directly related to his pay. “After the recent election, I’m more resolved than ever to stand up for people from all walks of life,” said Barish, a researcher and teacher’s assistant in the Biology Department at Duke. “When I first started working at Duke, I was shocked to discover that graduate assistants like me were treated as though our work was not valuable even though we lead teaching and researching

throughout the University. In my teaching role I help mentor students and lead class discussions. I also help write grant proposals that bring in millions for the University. Despite this work, the University does not respect us as they do professors and does not pay us enough to meet the rising cost of living.” Those involved in the “Fight for $15” movement say despite the election of Trump, they believe most Americans are against his policies and are on the side of the American worker. Fells noted that on Election Day, in four states and one city where the issue to raise the minimum wage was on the ballot, passed in all five places. He said in the states of California and New York, along with cities like Seattle, they understand the necessity to raise the minimum wage.
