Youth protest Ferguson decision peacefully By J. Coyden Palmer Unlike many of their youthful counterparts in the St. Louis area, Chicago area Black youth converged on City Hall the day after a grand jury declined to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. The youth-based organization, Black Youth Project 100 (BYP), organized the peaceful, 28-hour sit-in. The significance of the 28 hours is based on the time between Black youth being shot by police or security guards in the United States. BYP 100 member Charlene Carruthers said Mayor Rahm Emanuel is one of the most powerful Democrats in the country, and with the millions he raises annually for the party, he can do a better job in financing education, social programs and other entities that will help reduce the crime rate in the Black community. She said this is why the Mayor’s office was chosen as the protest site.

CHICAGOANS PROTEST CITY HALL, following the grand jury’s decision not to indict Darren Wilson, staging a diein representing the Black lives that have been lost at the hands of the police. Initially, nearly 30 BYP 100 members were participating in the sit-in and were joined by another 75 supporters of their cause. Carruthers stated more members would be joining throughout the day. BYP 100 released a statement regarding the Mike Brown case as well. “The Grand Jury’s decision to not indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown serves as a call to action for young Black people across America,” began the statement. “We are forced to contend with a culture of anti-Blackness enforced by government (Continued on page 18)

INSIDE THIS ISSUE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA presented nineteen recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on Monday, November 24. Among the honorees were Stevie Wonder (left) and Charles Sifford (right). In presenting the award to Stevie Wonder the President said “Stevie Wonder is one of the world’s most gifted singer-songwriters. Mr. Wonder has created a sound entirely his own, mixing rhythm and blues with genres ranging from rock and roll to reggae, and demonstrating his mastery of a range of instruments, styles, and themes. He is also a Kennedy Center Honoree, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and winner of 25 Grammys and an Academy Award. Charles Sifford was a professional golfer who helped to desegregate the Professional Golfers’ Association, despite harassment and death threats. He started his life on the links as a caddy, and though he was formally excluded from the PGA for much of his career because of the color of his skin, he won six National Negro Opens. In 1960, he won his challenge over the PGA’s ‘Caucasian only’ membership policy. He went on to win official PGA events and the PGA Seniors’ Championship. He was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004 and received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of St. Andrews in 2006.” (Photos by Fred Watkins)

Army veteran receives new home from Bank of America By J. Coyden Palmer A big welcome home present was given to a local Army veteran just in time for Thanksgiving. Former Specialist Renness Trenton Jones received keys to a mortgage-free home, courtesy of Bank of America in honor of his military service. Jones, who was born and raised in the Chicago area, joined the Army in 2005 and served a tour in Afghanistan and a tour in Iraq. After being wounded in Iraq, he returned home and served an additional year with the National Guard. Jones now plans to enroll in college as he begins his transformation back into civilian life. “This is the 1000th home that

Bank of America has donated so we couldn’t be more proud to be connected with an upstanding citizen and solider as Mr. Jones is,” said Will McReynolds, vice president of consumer marketing for Bank of America. “They’ve sacrificed so much so it only makes sense to reward them for that service. Bank of America is proud to be a part of that.” Jones, who also has an emotional support dog that was donated to him, was overwhelmed with the home he can now call his own. He said he was most proud to have his grandmother with him to see this moment. He credited her for keeping him on the right path in his youth. “Today is a great day for me and

Illinois senate addresses school discipline Whether it is high-ranking federal government officials such as U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder or Secretary of Education Arne Duncan or local school council (LSC) members, there is a growing demand for change in the state’s schools disciplinary policies. Advocates of Illinois Senate Bill (SB) 3004 maintain the legislation will change school districts’ policies for expulsions and out-ofschool suspensions, but particularly for minor incident arrests. The senators stated that the outof-school suspensions and expulsions contribute to higher dropout rates of high school students. These actions, according to state senator Toi Hutchinson (DChicago Heights), clearly demonstrate that when a student misses school for even a couple of days due to these arcane policies, that student is likely to fall behind in at least one class. “The discouragement the student feels causes her or his academic performance to suffer.” Hutchinson added there is empirical evidence that reinforces these conclusions. She also said other cities, 2

specifically Baltimore, Md., Denver, Co., as well as Clayton County, Ga. brought measurable and sustained improvements in several areas. She noted in Baltimore a revised school code of conduct cut suspensions from 26,000 to less than 10,000 during a five-year period. Hutchinson also said the report, issued by the Campaign for Common Sense Discipline, showed the changed produced a record high graduation rate, including for Black boys and reduced juvenile crime city-wide. State Senator Kimberly Lightford cited another Campaign for Common Sense Discipline report that stated “current state policies push thousands of Illinois students out of school and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems every year. A recent study found that a first-time arrest doubles the odds that a student will drop out of school and, a firsttime court appearance quadruples those odds.” She added that passage of SB3004 addresses many of the problems that currently exist re-

DETERMINED TO BE the next mayor of Chicago, successful businessman Dr. Willie Wilson Monday filed 47,000 signatures with the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners he said took him just five days to collect.

Speak up for your own heritage By Dr. Lyn Hughes In Chicago, over the past week, the news was dominated with comments about the death of former Mayor Jane Byrne. You heard countless comments made by politicians and ordinary people alike, all reflecting how proud they were of her legacy; and rightly so. While this was occurring, the thought hit me. As a general rule we don’t see that same level of discussion about anyone of African descent. I know that some reading this will say, “Here she comes with the race card.” To those people I say, this commentary is not intended for you, because you are already confused. It is a fact; there is an endless list of buildings and highways, streets and public institutions named in honor of people not of my hue—however, not for African American people. Even the gorgeous building in downtown Chicago known as the Harold Washington library has no sign bearing his name. Yet there has NEVER been a concerted effort from the Black community to make that happen. Subliminal messaging has an enormous affect on us all, especially our children. Are we allowing them to be told at a very early age that they don’t count and that their heritage is not important? Our children need to know their heritage is a magnificent tapestry of many people not just those in the news, but a combination of prominent and everyday working people just like those who worked on the railroad. Renowned Appellate Judge R. Eugene Pincham, for a time worked as a Dining Car Waiter to put himself through college,

Dr. Lyn Hughes

Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall also worked as a Pullman Porter when he was in college. Matthew Henson, a former Pullman Porter, is known as one of the world’s greatest explorers. By the way he was also the co-discoverer of the North Pole. These are things our children don’t know but should. Perhaps knowing facts like that would inspire some to know they can have a good life even if they are not a basketball or football player or a rap artist. My question is “When did it become a NO NO for Black people to be proud of our history, heritage and culture.” Our self-worth and self-respect has been so severely damaged that we, as a people, don’t think we are entitled to be proud of ourselves. In short we have been tricked into believing the hype (the perception of ourselves) that has been created for us by others. Virtually every ethnic group in this country will say unapologetically through their every thought, word and deed that they are proud of their heritage, except us. That then brings me to discuss what I consider a very important issue. By now everyone in Chicago knows about the efforts underway to make Pullman a National Park Site (NPS). You all have seen the nu-

merous articles and coverage in the mainstream media and the Black Press, about it and there is always a footnote that mentions the Black Labor connection. But—How many of you have seen or heard the actual mention of the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum located in Pullman? You have not, because it has not happened. With the NPS we see an opportunity to honor Black labor contributions in America for all time. This could be accomplished using the names of those men and women who pushed their way into the Black middle class through the door of railroad employment and the efforts of A. Philip Randolph and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. We are suggesting this could be accomplished in the NPS designation if the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum is named as one of the sites just as the Hotel Florence, the Pullman Factory and the Greenstone Church, among others, are. That single act alone would result in visitors from all over the world coming to know the name A. Philip Randolph and become educated about the Black labor contributions in America. If you agree it is not too late to help, but the time is short! Please download, sign and send the letter to President Obama on our website. http://aprppmprogramsandnews.o rg/images/_2_Letter_to_President_Obama.pdf . Dr. Lyn Hughes is the founder of the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, which is a 501(c) 3 cultural institution located in the Historic Pullman District in Chicago, Illinois.

EDITORIAL HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us and much is happening in the world, and a lot of it is unpleasant. Although this is the case, there is also a lot to be thankful for. This week The Crusader has chosen to focus on the positive things in our lives; the things that we sometimes overlook or undervalue. First of all, if you are reading this, you are alive, which is a blessing in itself. The important thing about being conscious on this plane of existence is that for every breath that you take there is an opportunity for redemption, for correction, for forging new directions. In order to master life on Earth, we must first be alive on Earth. We can also be thankful for the presence of other human beings, no matter how quarrelsome or troubling they may be at this point in time. Other people give us an opportunity to see ourselves; they are our reflections. Think how truly unpleasant life would be without people...we are a herd species, and all of the trials and tribulations that come with that afford us the chance to improve, to get better. Let’s also give thanks to all of the artists who create uplifting messages in order to sweeten the pot somewhat for us when things get us down. Beautiful music and art are life savers. This includes dance, and all other forms of creativity that are shared that makes life more pleasant. A good book, movie, play, song, painting, or more helps us focus on that which is beyond ourselves. Give thanks for shelter. It is true that there are people in our world that do not have adequate shelter, but many of us can give thanks for the fact that even the homeless have access to shelter if they choose to take advantage of them. Brick and mortar homes, indoor flushing toilets, heat, air conditioners, and windows which allow us to see outside when we are indoors, are also a blessing that most of us can appreciate. Give thanks for technological innovation. Let’s also give thanks for the food that we manage to get on a daily basis, though we know that there are people who are “food insecure.” Even with this, however, there are those who recognize this problem, have publicized it, and attempt to bring help to those who need it. Give thanks for the availability of healthcare; though affordable healthcare has not always been available to all, we are getting there. President Obama deserves a lot of credit in this regard, and even before The Affordable Care Act people have had access to public funded healthcare. We sometimes take this for granted, but if you stop and think about it, we have some of the best trained individuals in healthcare delivery in the world at our fingertips. We can also give thanks for a public transportation system. Think of how difficult life would be if public transportation did not exist. People’s lives would end up at a standstill; people would not be able to get to jobs or anywhere else. Give thanks for the gift of thought. For the most part we are able to make decisions for ourselves, although we sometimes choose the wrong paths. Nevertheless, we can choose, and the outcome of our collective choices determine the direction that we end up going. Let’s give thanks to all of the advocates who fight tirelessly to ensure that those most in need among us have an opportunity to live peaceful, decent lives. Let’s thank the nurses, doctors, scientists, newspersons, community organizers, firemen, policemen (yes, in spite of the current unrest in the Black community, it would be even worse if there were no decent policemen), and others who contribute to helping to make a better quality of life available. Finally, let’s give thanks for our families and friends. No matter what else happens to us, the existence of others close to us can cushion any fall. With that said, the Crusader wishes for you and yours a very Happy and Safe Thanksgiving Holiday! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A Library for the Soul Dear Editor: St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church enthusiastically supports the University of Chicago’s efforts to bring the Obama Presidential Library to the South Side. The Library has the potential to revitalize our community and inspire the souls of our youth. St. Edmund’s started as a mission in 1905 with fewer than 20 parishioners and quickly grew to become a spiritual home for Chicago’s most prominent African American leaders. Over time, however, economic and demographic forces have overwhelmed our community. Employment opportunities are nearly non-existent. Commercial facilities to serve our residents are limited at best. Vacant lots and abandoned buildings still dot our landscape. But the possibility of having the Obama Presidential Library on the South Side offers us hope. The Library has the potential to spur economic development and offer employment opportunities. Early estimates suggest that the Obama Presidential Library could bring nearly 3,300 jobs to the South Side for a total of $600 million in

economic impact – a catalyst for real and lasting change in our community. St. Edmund’s has long stood for increased educational opportunities. In 1948, the Parish opened an elementary school, then called St Edmund’s Parochial School. That school closed in 1988 amid tough economic conditions in the community. It reopened in 1992 as a charter school, St. Edmund’s Academy, which allowed it to offer free tuition to more children. The school now serves more than 450 K-8 students in our community. The presence of the Library on the South Side would be an incredibly valuable asset and inspiration to schools such as ours. The Presidential Library could provide afterschool and extracurricular activities, in addition to educational programming and resources for the South Side. Most importantly, the Library would help unleash the unlimited potential of our youth. Just imagine the message we send to our young people by housing a Library dedicated to the nation’s first African American President and First Lady – both of whom rose from circumstances every bit as humble as those facing our young people and, like us, call the South Side home. The Obama Presidential Library will symbolize what they’re capable of through hard work, imagination and hope. The stakes are high. We stand at the cusp of an immense opportu-

nity, to uplift families and instill faith in our community. The Obama Presidential Library should come home to the South Side. Sincerely, Richard L. Tolliver

COMMENTARY

The Obama Administration has no regard for the Constitution Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist It has been told by many in the press that President Obama is a former professor who taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago. I find that hard to believe. His actions, thoughts and governing model have no semblance of respect for our U.S. Constitution. His defiance against both houses of the legislature and his criticism of the U.S. Supreme Court from time to time make me wonder. How could someone teach constitutional law to a group of law students and have little regard for its principles as he performs or non-performs his duties as President of the United States. The examples of my claim are big and numerous. Let me cite a few. At the beginning of his first administration he attempted to rush through the Cap and Trade Legislation. The law was laden with thousands of pages demanding states to perform nearly impossible tasks. It did not take into consideration a basic and strong principle of our constitution: Our states have precious rights which are controlled by those respective states and not the

Harry C. Alford federal government. What the White House was trying to do was pass onerous mandates that would heavily cost these state governments without recourse. Wealth was to be redistributed to other nations and at the cost of American citizens. The cost of energy would be overbearing to the common middle class family affecting the economy of each and every state. In the end, the states and the Republican opposition had the courts stand down this runaround attempt against our pre-

cious constitution. The Cap and Trade Legislation went south with a “bullet” and embarrassed the democratic caucus on Capitol Hill. Lately, the Obama Administration is trying to resurrect the above effort through rule making by the Environmental Protection Agency. Laws are written and from time to time rules on how to implement a law will come out to update the legislation as the law may need updating to remain relevant. Under this Administration such rule making has become an art at creating new laws without going through Congress. Remember only Congress can write legislation and make a law. The President’s Administration enforces that law as Congress intended. The judicial system ensures that all laws remain within the guidelines of the constitution. Currently, EPA rule change 111-D is being forced down the “throats” of our state governments. States are given mandates that will cost them excessively and destroy jobs by the thousands and raise energy pricing for businesses and citizens. We and many associations and activists are pleading with each state to not abide by the mandate. Simply refuse to do it. The federal govern-

ment has no mechanism to fine or sanction a state who ignores the mandate. That’s because it is actually illegal. You can’t force a law that isn’t legal. If the administration tries to punish a resisting state a court will side with the state. Right now, such a scenario is happening with the biggest assault ever made on the constitution, the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare. This law was won by a margin of one vote in the legislature. It has been unilaterally and illegally amended by the president to the point it is not the same law that was voted on. Most of its proponents haven’t even read the law. According to one of the “architects” of this law, Jon Gruber, transparency had to be replaced with secrecy because the American people would not agree with the law as they were secretly changing it. Mr. Gruber publically laughs about how they pulled one over on the American voters because of their “stupidity.” That’s right they claim the “voter stupidity” is what made the law pass. However, they have a problem. 36 of our 50 states are refusing to abide one of the mandates. They are supposed to set up subsidies to provide cost relief to those who

can’t afford their needed insurance. If they don’t then the only recourse is for the federal government to provide a subsidy exchange in each of those 36 states. This won’t happen as the federal government does not have the funding for such a gigantic cost. The Supreme Court will examine this between now and June 2015. At that time it will all hit the fan. The courts have been siding against the Administration in various lawsuits across the nation. Ultimately, the Supreme Court will settle the issue once and for all. Obamacare will be declared unconstitutional. The nation will go through a fiscal uproar due to this gigantic blunder that was nursed along with deception and outright lies by the 44th president of the United States. A basic understanding of our constitution would have prevented this fiasco. That is why I conclude the title “Professor of Constitutional Law” should not apply to President Barack Obama. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

Blacks Still Devastated by HIV/AIDS By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist As we prepare to commemorate World AIDS Day on Monday, Dec. 1, this is a good time to look at how the epidemic continues to devastate our community. A fact sheet by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation noted, “Black Americans have been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS since the epidemic’s beginning, and that disparity has deepened over time. Blacks account for more new HIV infections, people estimated to be living with HIV disease, and HIV-related deaths than any other racial/ethnic group in the U.S.” Fact sheets by CDC and Kaiser also show: Today, there are more than 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S., including more than 506,000 who are Black. Although Black Americans represent only 12 percent of the U.S. population, they accounted for 44 percent of new HIV infections and an estimated 44 percent of people living with HIV in 2010. The rate of new HIV infections per 100,000 among Black adults/adolescents (68.9) was nearly eight times that of Whites (8.7) and more than twice that of Latinos (27.5) in 2010. The rate for Black men (103.6) was the highest of any group, more than twice that of Latino men www.chicagocrusader.com

(45.5), the second highest group. Black women (38.1) had the third highest rate overall, and the highest among women. In 2010, African American gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men represented an estimated 72 percent (10,600) of new infections among all African American men and 36 percent of an estimated 29,800 new HIV infections among all gay and bisexual men. More new HIV infections (4,800) occurred among young African American gay and bisexual men (aged 13-24) than any other subgroup of gay and bisexual men. In 2010, African American women accounted for 6,100 (29 percent) of the estimated new HIV infections among all adult and adolescent African Americans. This number represents a decrease of 21 percent since 2008. Most new HIV infections among African American women (87 percent; 5,300) are attributed to heterosexual contact. The estimated rate of new HIV infections for African American women (38.1/100,000 population) was 20 times that of White women and almost five times that of Hispanic/Latino women. Of HIV diagnoses among 13 to 19 year olds, almost 70 percent are to Black teens, even though they constitute approximately 16 percent of the adolescent population in the U.S. HIV was the fifth leading cause of

George E. Curry death for Black men and the seventh for Black women, ages 25-44, in 2010, which is higher than any other racial or ethnic group. Not surprisingly, most of the Black HIV/AIDs cases are in the South, where the majority of African Americans live. The Kaiser fact sheet observed, “Regionally, the South accounts for the majority of Blacks newly diagnosed with HIV (61% in 2011) and Blacks living with an HIV diagnosis at the end of 2010 (55%). “HIV diagnoses among Blacks are clustered in a handful of states,

with 10 states accounting for the majority (68%) of Blacks living with an HIV diagnosis at the end of 2010. New York and Florida top the list. While the District of Columbia had fewer Blacks living with an HIV diagnosis in 2010 (10,995), it had the highest rate of Blacks living with an HIV diagnosis at the end of 2010 (4,260.3 per 100,000); a rate more than 3 times the national rate for Blacks (1,242.4). “Ten large metropolitan areas accounted for over half (59%) of Blacks living with an HIV diagnosis at the end of 2009. The New York and Miami metropolitan areas had the greatest numbers of Blacks living with an HIV diagnosis.” Like most females, Black women are more likely to have been infected through heterosexual transmission than their White counterparts, who are more likely to have been infected through drug use than Black women. Though males are more likely to have been infected through sex with other men, heterosexual transmission and injection of drugs account

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

for a greater share of new infections among Black men than White men. Although 75 percent of Blacks in the 18-64 age group report having been tested for HIV the – the highest of any group – within the last 12 months, 17 percent of Blacks living with HIV do not know they are infected. That’s crucial because the sooner an HIVpositive person enters treatment, the better chance he or she has of living a long, relatively normal life. Overall, HIV is not at the high levels it was in the 1980s, but we are a long way from eradicating this scourge. George E. COMMENTARY

WE MUST NOT ABANDON BLACK FAMILY LIFE (Dr. Conrad Worrill, Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-4930900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill

By Julianne Malveaux Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander will likely become chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Though he has yet to be elected by his Republican peers, he has given several interviews that indicate ways he would change the way educational services are delivered in our country. For all his bluster, though, his approach is essentially to privatize and push states rights. For example, while President Obama has proposed spending $75 billion for universal and mandated preschool education, Senator Alexander would take the $22 billion of federal funds for preschool education and send it back to the states. While the President’s proposal would include guidelines on teacher qualification, class size, and other matters, Alexander would have the states make those decisions. Alexander suggests that his approach is “innovative,” but this is more of the same old stuff. There has been some controversy about “Common Core” requirements that would somewhat standardize high school education, indicating what students should know when they graduate from high school. Alexander says the states, not the federal govern6

Since the early 1900s, Black and white scholars have written much on the Black family. When one examines the card catalogue of any library in America, they will find volumes of books, articles and newspaper clippings discussing some aspect of Black family life. What we need in the African American community is a framework to examine and solve the problems of Black family life on our own terms. The capturing of African people, who were placed in chattel slavery in North America, has left some devastating scars on the most basic unit or any group— the family. There is no question that the family has been that unit that provides the basic foundation for any group of people to survive and develop. Families constitute grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and in-laws. Sometimes families extend beyond blood relatives to those persons we bring

into our families for whatever reason. Families function in the context of their racial and ethnic identity. This identity is shaped by the historical and external forces of a given society. Although the problems of the Black family appear to be very complex on the one hand, on the other, the problem is very simple. First of all, African people who were captured and introduced into the western hemisphere as property and commodities were removed from their land and institutional arrangements of African life. Second, this process of white takeover of Black life, through the most brutal form of oppression— the slave trade and the eventual enslavement of African people on the plantations of North America, has been a back breaking experience for our people. Even through our survival techniques have been superior, in the face of brutal psychological and physical violence against us, we

are now at the crossroads. We face the challenge of preserving some of the traditions of the Black family, developed by our ancestors, who fought so hard against racism and white supremacy in this country. This must be done, in part, through the continuing African Centered Education Movement. As our renowned ancestor and deep thinker Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers explained, African Centered Education should focus on the following: 1. Advocates that restoring the historical truth about Africa is the priority for African thinkers (including Africans in the Diaspora). 2. Holds that there is a distinct universal African World View which should be the foundation for all African intellectual development. 3. Involves the massive education or rather re-education of the African people of the world from an African perspective in the interest of African people and di-

rected by African thinkers. It is a necessary pre-condition for the freedom of the African mind and subsequently African liberation. We must not abandon family life. It is the basis for our survival and development. It is the strategy of the white supremacy system to place so much pressure on us that we give up our fight for independence and freedom. When the family unit begins to wither away, we must rise to the occasion and fight to keep its basic elements alive in our communities. It is the duty of all Black people to understand that we are faced with a genocidal set of circumstances in America. Look around our communities and what do we/you see? We witness the absence of that fighting family spirit among us that has been so much a part of Black family life. The family is the support mechanism for all that we do and it is a sacred institution that we must preserve and protect on our own terms.

What does it take to make education a higher priority? What does it take to close the race gap in achievement? Given our nation’s shifting demographics, there should be some passion about reforming our education system so that more young people (and those not so young) are able to achieve their highest and best. The best-educated workforce is the more productive one, so failing to focus on education means failing to focus on the future of our nation’s economy. We ignore these education challenges at our own peril. Senator Lamar Alexander could make a difference if he got off his privatization, state’s rights hobbyhorse and talked about embracing ways our entire nation can improve educational attainment. The states rights’ approach leads to a real

unevenness in educational quality – some states will choose to prioritize education and others will not. Yet, our entire nation will shoulder the impact of uneven education, and our entire nation will pay. The only saving grace in the fact that Senator Alexander will chair the Senate Education committee is that he will perhaps only have 2 years to wreak havoc. If Democrats are astute and provide more focus on education, then perhaps Republican dominance will fade. Still, this is not about Democrats or Republicans; it is about the future of our nation. Heretofore, neither party has been as innovative on these issues as they might be.

New Leader, Old Policies

ment, should make these decisions, but the unwillingness to look at national educational standards is a step backward, not a step forward. In the several interviews Alexander has given since the Republicans won the Senate, he has not mentioned the words “achievement gap,” although African Americans and Latinos trail behind whites in both mathematics and English proficiency. While Alexander’s silence on this issue is disturbing, equally disturbing is the fact that Democrats have not put enough effort in dealing with the achievement gap. Thus, while President Obama says he wants the United States to lead the world in college graduation rates, little has been done to make sure this can happen, especially for African Americans and Latinos. There seems to be a collective decision to ignore the achievement gap, and a lack of passion about closing it. To be sure, many African American educational lead ers have focused on the achievement gap, especially among Black boys (Black girls need attention, too). Their work does not often result in headlines. Again, there is little collective will to deal with the implications of achievement gaps in the long run. While neither Democrats nor Republicans are blameless in this

Dr. Julianne Malveaux matter, it is Republicans who continually talk about reaching out to the African American community. Senator Lamar Alexander could have made some progress with African Americans, especially educators, if he had spent just a few seconds of his media rounds talking about race and the achievement gap. Education ought to be one of our nation’s highest priorities. It ought to have been so for the past several decades. President Obama came into office saying that education is a high priority, but the economy and international issues have seemed to move education issues from a high priority to an afterthought.

Those who filed petitions included Rahm Emanuel, Willie Wilson, Bob Shaw, Amara Enyia, Bob Fioretti, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, Fenton Patterson, Frederick Collins, Gerald Sconyers, and William Dock Walls. Some of them are very familiar, but to some Ima went whoo???? The whoos included Frederick Collins, Gerald Sconyers and Fenton Patterson. Were they too busy counting their money to make a report of being drugged and sexually molested more than 40 years ago? And what happened that they all are coming out like the folks in the movie Awakening. Remember how the folks woke up and started dancing, talking and everything? Well Ol’ Bill’s attorney has been busier than a cat covering up stuff. Now Ima don’t know if these claims are true or not, but how long does a drug stay in your system? Debt Collectors Target, Harass Older Consumers By Charlene Crowell For succeeding generations, retirement has been the time when older Americans reaped the benefits of their years in the workplace. Oftentimes at ceremonies, workers would receive a gold watch – a symbol of their entry into retirement and an era of ‘golden years.’ Today, few if any, count on getting a gold watch. And what should have been the proverbial golden years are often tarnished by a struggle to keep pace with rising costs of living. These financial challenges are often worsened by aggressive debt collectors who hound older Americans about debts they may not even owe. Sometimes, these collectors threaten to garnish their limited benefits. “It’s increasingly common for older Americans to carry debts into their retirement years, and consumers living on fixed incomes often struggle to pay off these debts,” said Richard Cordray, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). “Older Americans deserve to be treated with the respect they have earned.” According to the CFPB, debt

collection is a multi-billion industry with more than 4,500 firms nationwide. Moreover, consumers have submitted more complaints to the CFPB about debt collection than mortgages, credit cards or any other financial product or service. A recent analysis of complaints received by the CFPB from July 10, 2013 until September 30 of this year revealed that one out of three was about debt collection. Threats to garnish federal benefits such as Social Security or Veterans’ benefits are particularly distressing to older consumers when these items are their primary sources of income. Similarly, older consumers with memory loss or other cognitive impairments are particularly vulnerable to harassment and scams. While some creditors may collect their own debts, others hire third-party debt collectors. To make matters even more complicated, a single debt may be sold multiple times to different debt buyers. A third of the complaints received by CFPB revealed that consumers could not identify the original source of the debt. Regardless of the source of debt,

Charlene Crowell many older consumers also experienced repeated attempts by collectors to pursue debts of deceased family members – despite them having no responsibility for the debt. For others, even after judicial probate was concluded, or the funds from the deceased have been exhausted, harassing phone calls still continued. Medical debt, another frequently-reported complaint, involved

collectors pressing for payments at the same time the consumer is trying to resolve medical billing disputes and whether the item in question is eligible for insurance coverage. In other cases, debt collectors make repeated attempts to collect on bills already covered by insurance. The confusion and frustration felt by consumers is also aggravated by collectors calling over bills appearing on their credit report when no prior attempt communicated the debt in question by the original creditor. Earlier this year and in a separate report, the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) found scant regulation allows profiteers to take advantage of financially-distressed consumers. Many times debt collectors secure court judgments for debts that may not even be owed. A 2009 Federal Trade Commission analysis of 3.9 million consumer accounts, found only six percent of the accounts came with any documentation. To help older consumers to cope with debt collectors, CFPB released an advisory that includes specific things consumers should do when faced with a debt collector. It encourages consumers to

verify a debt claim before promising or paying it. In instances in which a consumer knows a debt is not their own, CFPB’s advice is to dispute all inaccurate claims. The advisory also includes sample letters to help consumers formalize their concerns. For CRL, the growth of debt collection issues is of particular concern. “American consumers are profoundly and negatively affected by wrongful debt collection tactics on a daily basis,” said Lisa Stifler, a CRL policy counsel. “No one should be forced to deal with illegal collection activity, and debt collectors should not be allowed to exploit seniors’ vulnerability in order to make a profit.” No one – and especially our older Americans — deserve to become financial prey. As families look forward to the holiday season, remember to help older loved ones remain free from profiteers. Love them enough to help them defend their financial rights. Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. She can be reached at Charlene.crowell@responsiblelending.org.

Rees House makes way for McCormick entertainment district The Harriet Rees House was relocated recently in what is believed to be the heaviest residential structure moved in U.S. history. The three-story, 762-ton Chicago landmark traveled one city block (600 feet) north from 2110 S. Prairie Avenue to rest just outside of its replacement location at 2017 S. Prairie Avenue. The brick and limestone mansion completed its journey in a day, after being backed into position above its new foundation via a

Alderman Pat Dowell slow 90-degree turn. The relocation, approved by the City of Chicago Commission on Chicago Landmarks, is part of Mayor Emanuel’s “Elevate Chicago” initiative. The Rees House www.chicagocrusader.com

was moved to make way for the McCormick Place Entertainment District, which will include a 10,000-seat event center and a 1,200-room Marriott Marquis Headquarter hotel. CEO of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, Jim Reilly said, “We are proud to not only preserve an important piece of Chicago history, but also make new history by successfully moving a house of such massive size and weight. This undertaking could not have been possible without the support of Ald. Pat

Dowell, the MPEA Board, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, the residents of the local community and our development team.” Prior to the move day, the house was cut from its foundation using masonry saws, lifted on jacks and loaded onto 32 massive automated dollies. The total weight of the structure with the rolling dollies and exoskeleton of steel to stabilize its brick construction is 1,045 tons. The house measures 95 feet long, 72 feet high and 25 feet wide. The residence’s two-story,

187-ton coach house was relocated on October 1. The Chicago contractor Bulley & Andrews, with Thornton Tomasetti serving as the project’s engineering firm, coordinated the move and restoration of the Rees House. Wolfe House and Building Movers performed the move of the structure. Allan E. Bulley Jr., chairman and CEO of Bulley & Andrews says, “The Rees House’s history in Chicago and the enormous scale of the project make this move significant locally and nationally. And the fact that the house was built around the same time my grandfather founded our company makes it particularly significant for Bulley & Andrews. We’re privileged to be a part of it.” Built in 1888, the Rees House is a cornerstone of the Prairie Avenue Historic District, a grouping of late 19th century mansions built in the neighborhood by prominent Chicagoans, including George Pullman and Marshall Field. After its relocation, the Rees House and its coach house will occupy a lot adjacent to the William H. Reid House and the Wheeler Mansion. The Rees House was originally built for Harriet Rees, the widow of James H. Rees, a real-estate innovator who drafted one of the early maps of Chicago. In 1910,

Youth guidance receives $300,000 Grant from Thrive Foundation Youth Guidance has been awarded a $300,000 grant by the Thrive Foundation for Youth to support the agency’s mission of helping underserved youth ages 10-18 to reach their full potential. Youth Guidance was selected, along with seven other youth-serving organizations from around the U.S., based on its proven track record of directly impacting youth in the communities it serves. The two-year, unrestricted grant will support the agency’s work in the field of positive youth development. Established in 1924, Youth Guidance has an extensive history of serving innercity areas where the challenges of community violence and academic failure among youth are most pressing. The agency creates and implements schoolbased programs that enable at-risk youth to overcome obstacles, focus on their education and, ultimately, graduate with a meaningful plan for a success-

through the Thrive Foundation grant include Becoming A Man (B.A. M.), Working on Womanhood (W.O.W.), Community & After-School (C.A.P.), Project Prepare, and also Strategies To Rejuvenate Interest and Value in Education (S.T.R.I.V.E.), which helps wards of the state of Illinois transition into adulthood and lead productive lives. By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ By Raymond Ward R-E-S-P-E-C-T!: Let it be known....The Queen is PISSED! Award-winning author David Ritz, who back in 1999 co-wrote Aretha Franklin’s memoir, “ARETHA: From These Roots.” Now, he has written a brand new biography of The Queen entitled “RESPECT: The Life of Aretha Franklin (Little Brown Publishing Company; $30), and Ree-Ree “ain’t havin’ it.” Miss Franklin is threatening legal action because she’s not happy with the book. In fact she said, “there’s a very trashy, trashy book....it’s lies, lies, lies and then more lies.” It seems that back in 1999, after David Ritz finished co-writing “From These Roots” with Aretha, and before the book was published, she took out her “editor’s pen” and exorcised everything she did not want the public to know about....she even removed the names of certain people (hello... Jesse Jackson). When she had finished, a pristine and sanitized version of her life was delivered to the publisher. Well, it seems that David Ritz was not pleased and decided that he was going to tell the “real story” of Aretha by using all of his notes, research and interviews accumulated for the first book. Ritz stated, “I spent 25 years researching “Respect” and I see my book as an homage to Aretha’s artistic genius Aretha Franklin and an empathetic portrait of a woman who has survived and thrived in the complex culture of show business.” Mind you when it comes to writing, David Ritz is no novice. He’s written almost fifty books including co-writing, or “ghostwriting” the biographies of Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, B.B.King, Janet Jackson and Natalie Cole, just to name a few. In addition, he even co-wrote the song “Sexual Healing” with Marvin Gaye. Simply put....Aretha Franklin needs to get over herself. RESPECT: The Life of Aretha Franklin is a revealing, authoritative biography of the Queen of Soul.In the book you’ll find out that... Aretha Franklin began life as the golden daughter of a progressive, brilliant and also promiscuous Baptist preacher. Reared without her mother, she was a gospel prodigy who by her middle teens had already given birth to two sons and left them and her native Detroit for New York, where she struggled to find her true voice. She found fame, fortune, and that remarkable voice in 1967 with “Respect” and a rapid-fire string of hits. Aretha turned the industry on its head by refueling pop with heavy soul. The Queen of Soul had survived and arrived. In RESPECT, David Ritz uses exclusive interviews with her closest friends, family and associates to write movingly of Aretha’s path and the extraordinary highs and deep lows she encountered along the way. Just as she was reestablishing her divadom in the 1980’s with hits like “Freeway of Love,” personal tragedy—-the deaths of her father, sisters and brother—threw her into isolation. Whenever it seems the Queen has relinquished her reign she appears in scenes of ever greater drama and national significance. In 1998, when an ailing Luciano Pavarotti could not appear at the Grammy Awards, she came out of the shadows and stunned the world with a version of “Nessun Dorma” that was pure pop soul. From the moving elegies she performed at the funerals of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks to her dramatic performance at President Barack Obama’s first inauguration, Aretha has become our nation’s voice. Again and again, Aretha Franklin stubbornly finds a way to triumph over troubles, conquering them even as they continue to build. Her hold on her crown is tenacious and in RESPECT, David Ritz gives us the decisive and definitive study of one of the greatest talents in all of American culture. 12

He also addressed the issue of diversity within the opera world. “It hit home to me a couple of months ago, when I was in Lucene, Switzerland, with the Berlin Harmonic. We were in the concert hall there, and I thought to myself that I was the only person of color in the room. But I know that this is my life.” As concerns the theme of Porgy and Bess, where some folks might consider the old story degrading, Owens offered the following: “I understand we have had talks about not being embraced by the Black community. By Barbara Wright-Pryor The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess opened at Lyric Opera of Chicago in a revival of director Francesca Zambello’s original production and is being extolled by audiences of all ages. The November 17 opening night performance was broadcast live on 98.7 WFMTand streamed on wfmt.com. The opera Porgy and Besscomposed by George Gershwin with lyrics by his brother Ira Gershwin and Dorothy Heyward is based on the 1927 Broadway play Porgy by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and on DuBose Heyward’s 1924 novel of the same name. The action takes place in a fictitious tenement called Catfish Row on the shore of Charleston, South Carolina where the lame beggar, Porgy (bass-baritone Eric Owens), resides and meets and falls in love with the sultry and sexy Bess (soprano Adina Aaron), girlfriend of Crown (baritone Eric Greene). Bess leaves Crown to live with Porgy but is drawn to the “happy dust” offered to her by the devious Sportin’ Life (tenor Jermaine Smith). Also in the cast are soprano Karen Slack as the devout Serena, soprano Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi as the young mother Clara, contralto Gwendolyn Brownas Maria, and baritone Norman Garrettas Clara’s husband Jake. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Give thanks with a grateful heart. Obviously, it’s possible to give thanks without heartfelt gratitude. I immediately thought of the fast approaching Thanksgiving holiday as I listened to lyrics of this song “Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.” Praise is a simple thank you—for those who may have difficulty, continue to read and maybe a few verses from various songs may trigger your memory and inspire you to be grateful for your life. There are so many reasons to give God praise. One of my favorite gospel classics reminds us to “be grateful—there’s someone worse off than you—be grateful—there’s someone who would love to be in your shoes.” As the saying goes— one man’s trash is another person’s treasure. If we would stop and reflect on the beauty of life, it is inevitable not to see treasures hidden

Effie Rolfe right in your face. James Oppenheim stated, “The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the

wise grows it under his feet.” My message continues—stop and smell the roses while you can. I’ve learned to appreciate the simple things in life and not take anything for granted. My vow is to wake up giving God immediate thanks. Each time my eyes awaken to the dawning of another day, most times even before my feet hit the floor—I freely offer praise as the fruit of my lips. Too many alarm clocks sound never to be heard because someone’s soul has gone cold—I have to say thank you. I’m convinced that you should engulf God’s amazing grace, family, friends, health, favor, goodness, hope, joy, love, mercy, peace, prosperity, purpose, redemption, salvation and wealth. Unfortunately, too often, we fail to recognize and enjoy the benefits of God’s blessings each day. Just as God is eternal—so are his blessings. They are inexhaustible with more to be revealed each day waiting for you to experience. However, it begins

with praise in your heart and lips—which is a catalyst opening up the fountain of God’s very best. I may not be what I ought to be but thank God I’m not what I used to be is more than mere words. I think about how his patience and love has led me safely through the storms of life. When I shed selfish tears because of my own wrongful conviction and stinking thinking—I have to thank God for a changed minded. Through the tears, I say thank you Lord when he beckons me to let go and let God work it out in his own time and way—since he sees our beginning, end and all in between. Our heavenly Father has been so kind to my family as he brought us a mighty long way from the fields and gravel roads of Arkansas into a much better life of peace and manifested blessings. On my compass, all songs lead to praise—the one thing that doesn’t cost anything is to open your mouth, wave your hand, tap your toe, wiggle you finger,

smile…do something to indicate thankfulness to God and his many blessing. It’s been said the universe loves a grateful heart. Just as you appreciate when people acknowledge your kindness, so does God. I remember the mothers of the church saying you can’t beat God giving…no matter how hard you try. “Thank you Lord for all you’ve done for me” is another favorite song recorded by the late Bishop Walter Hawkins. The lyrics makes me think either people often forget or simply have a difficult time expressing themselves of the many blessings that God generously bestows each day. As for me, all I can say is, thank you Lord for all you’ve done for me. What things are you grateful for…? Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Medicare’s “Extra Help” program helps people with limited income pay for their prescription medications Making ends meet should not mean going without your medications. If you have limited income and resources, you may qualify for Extra Help to pay for some health care and prescription drug costs. Drug costs in 2015 for most people who qualify for Extra Help will be no more than $2.65 for each generic drug and $6.60 for each brandname drug. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services estimates that more than 2 million people with Medicare may be eligible for Extra Help, but aren’t currently enrolled to take advantage of these savings. A recent law changed how your income and assets are counted:

• Any help you get from relatives, friends, and others to pay for household expenses—like food, mortgage, rent, heating fuel or gas, electricity, water, and property taxes— doesn’t count as income Many People Qualify and Don’t Know It

Even if you were previously turned down for Extra Help due to income or resource levels, you should reapply. If you qualify, you’ll get help paying for Medicare prescription drug coverage premiums, copayments, and deductibles. To qualify, you must make less than $17,505 a year (or $23,595 for married couples). Even if your annual income is higher, you still may be able to get some extra help. Your resources must also be limited to $13,440 (or $26,860 for married couples). Resources include bank accounts, • Life insurance policies don’t stocks, and bonds, but not your house or car. count as resources

NEWS New Advocate Medical Group Practice coming to Pullman/Roseland Community Alderman Beale Closes Potential Gaps in Healthcare Access and Availability Adding to the ever increasing vibrancy and comprehensive services available in Chicago’s Pullman/Roseland community, 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI) welcomes the state’s largest healthcare system to the neighborhood as construction has begun on a new Advocate Medical Group practice. Located in the new Pullman Park development, 111th Street and the Bishop Ford Expressway,

Alderman Anthony Beale the 4,000 square foot Advocate Medical Group practice is slated to offer treatment for a variety of minor injuries and illnesses as well as a sports complex. It will also feature state-of-the-art technology designed to support minimal wait times and optimal service levels for individuals seeking care. In addition to improving the overall access to care and health support services for Pullman/Roseland residents, key community data will guide Advocate’s efforts to deliver healthcare services to where they are most needed and where they can make the largest impact in the neighborhood. Alderman Anthony Beale explained its importance to the community. “We actively sought out service providers that could assist in closing any potential gaps or barriers to healthcare access and availability in our communi-

ty,” said Alderman Beale. “I found that Advocate and I share a commitment to improving the lives of those in need, and the new outpatient facility will develop community health programs that will address the unique health needs for Pullman/Roseland residents.” Slated to open in 2015, the new $1.8 million Advocate Medical Group practice serves as a great complement to the continuing revitalization of the Pullman neighborhood which includes the location of many new manufacturing companies, the sale of rehabbed homes, the creation of a new trucking and logistics training center, the construction of a new community center that will house three full sized indoor multi-sport fields and the establishment of a very successful retail center with a full-service Walmart as an anchor tenant. CNI President David Doig, developer of the site, says that the outpatient facility completes the circle. “It is appropriate that Pullman is the site of Advocate’s new medical center. In 1880 George Pullman founded the community as a model, of work/education/cultural life. 134 years later – we’re again creating a complete community but doing it better, with the people who live here,” said Doig. “Together this community is rebuilding the housing, attracting the companies, strengthening education, retail and transportation. The creation of this center both celebrates what we have accomplished and paves the way for the future.” James R. Dan, MD, FACP, President of Advocate Medical Group says that they are looking forward to working closely with Alderman Beale and the Pullman/Roseland residents as they focus on health and wellness. “We are very fortunate and pleased that we will soon call Pullman home,” said Dan. “The new space allows us to bring the unique discipline of Advocate Health Care to Pullman and serve the health needs of individuals, families and the community through a holistic philosophy.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4)

Thanks For Your Help Dear Editor: Mental illness is a broad term that refers to medical conditions ranging from major depression to schizophrenia to posttraumatic stress disorder. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible, the bad news is www.chicagocrusader.com

that the stigma associated with these conditions pervades. In an effort to fundraise for critical programs and combat stigma, the local mental health community joined forces at the 9th Annual NAMIWalks Chicago. Held in Grant Park, the event attracted approximately 1,600 people, and to date, participants have raised more than $175,000 for support, advocacy, and educational programs. Teams walked in honor of people affected by mental illness and

they fundraised on behalf of NAMI Chicago. For example, Jessica Rappe’s Team Synergy raised nearly $12,000 to become the top fundraising team and David Nyberg’s Catherine’s Crusaders raised close to $7,000 [in honor of David’s niece who is living with biopolar disorder]. On behalf of NAMI Chicago, I want to thank the participants, volunteers, donors and sponsors for their support. We were thrilled to welcome back Mike Flannery of FOX Chicago as our host, and

were touched by his personal story of how mental illness has affected his family. In addition, we thank Michi Marshall, wife of Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who spoke about how mental illness has affected her family’s life and the need to come together so that people do not have to live in shame. The mission of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Chicago is to provide hope and improve the quality of life for those in the greater Chicago area

Phillips makes history, headed downstate for first time in football By J. Coyden Palmer With their 26-6 victory over Coal City last Saturday afternoon at Gately Stadium in the Class 4A semifinals, the Phillips Wildcats became the first Public League team to advance to the state final since Robeson in 1982. The team has gotten a phone call from the mayor and an outpouring of support from Chicagoans throughout the city, including the school’s prestigious alumni. The Wildcats (12-1) will now face Rochester at 7 p.m. on Friday at

Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Phillips was in control the entire game. They used a strong running game to dominate time of possession and to keep the Coal City offense on the sidelines. The Wildcats ran for over 400 yards. Corey Warren ran for a game-high 223 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns while quarterback Dewayne Collins added 122 yards to go along with a 41-yard scoring pass. Phillips believed if they could get a big lead early on Coal City (10-3), they could win because the Coalers are primari-
