One down, two to go Who is next to go after McCarthy? By J. Coyden Palmer Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a rare moment of submissiveness bent to the will of the people and fired police Superintendent Garry McCarthy Dec. 1. Saying although he still believed in McCarthy, he recognized McCarthy had lost the trust of the public. The Mayor named John Escalante to the post on an interim basis. But the removal of McCarthy not only failed to quell the calls for the Mayor’s own removal from office, it intensified it. “Simply put, the Mayor’s handpicked task force will not solve the problem because the Mayor himself is the problem,” read a statement from Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (D-1st). “The Mayor cannot investigate himself. That is why an independent federal investigation is required, and not just into Laquan McDonald’s murder, but into the process by which that murder was covered up. The dismissal of Superintendent McCarthy is a necessary but

insufficient first step. Without systemic reforms, the divide between law enforcement and communities will not be healed.” Other local political and community voices echoed calls for the Mayor’s removal along with Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. A coalition of Latino politicians asked for Alvarez’s resignation on Nov. 30, led by former mayoral candidate Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. Also asking her fellow county elected official to resign from her office was Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. She said the way the McDonald case and other daily cases are handled by the office of Alvarez is “disgraceful.”

“I’ve had no confidence in (Alvarez’s) leadership for a very long time,” Preckwinkle said. “I think the way she has run the office is disgraceful.” Kim Foxx, former chief of staff for Preckwinkle, is running against Alvarez in the upcoming Democratic primary in March. Foxx’s candidacy is being pushed by many in the Black community. She has vowed to make major changes to the office if she is elected and renewed calls for a special prosecutor to be appointed to look into the office. “It is clear that the grassroots public outcry of the past several days, and the tireless organizing of reform advocates over many years, have had a significant impact on the deci-

sion to replace Supt. McCarthy,” Foxx said. “It would be wrong, however, to assume that this move alone will satisfy those of us who believe an egregious miscarriage of justice has occurred here. There must still be a full investigation of anyone in the Chicago Police Department, the State’s Attorney Office and even City Hall to determine whether it was an inappropriate effort to conceal the truth, or simply mismanagement, that led to it taking 400 days to bring charges in this case.” Civic groups like the NAACP and Chicago Urban League (CUL) also supported the firing of McCarthy. Protests persist as calls grow for Emanuel to resign By Erick Johnson Protests continue to rock Chicago as calls mount for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s resignation for his handling of the controversial police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. More protests are planned in front of City Hall where NAACP President Cornell William Brooks and nine others were arrested on Monday, November 30. On Friday, Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (1st) plans to lead a march around City Hall at noon calling on sweeping reforms in addition to Emanuel’s resignation. The demands come as Black leaders scramble to calm a community that continues to express anger and pain of betrayal from a video of the brutal police shooting that was

released on Nov. 24. As Chicago remains in the national spotlight, young generations of Blacks continue to drive many protests hoping to dismantle a system that they believe has failed Blacks seeking equal justice and civil rights. On Tuesday night, hundreds of young protesters descended on Chicago Police headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan, celebrating McCarthy’s termination as the city’s top cop. They also urged the same fate for Emanuel and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez—both of whom who have been unable to answer key questions in the McDonald case that many view as an apparent cover-up. Emanuel said Wednesday he’s opposed to a broader federal civil rights investigation into the city’s police department, but admitted he made “mistakes” during the investigation into the McDonald shooting. The concerns have reached Springfield where Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan sent a letter to the U.S. Department of (Continued on page 3)

Center for poor veterans battle to stay open RTW Vet Center gets a break to correct numerous code violations, but big challenges lie ahead By Erick Johnson They have served the richest country in the world, but when it comes to serving the poor in Washington Park, the battle could not be tougher for a group of Marines on the city’s South Side. Some of America’s finest are battling to keep open a center for poor veterans amid fears that one of America’s wealthiest and most prestigious universities would launch an attack and wipe out their efforts to serve the homeless. For the past six months in the leafy neighborhood of Washington Park, a handful of Marines and community volunteers have been fighting to keep open the Remake The World (RTW) Vet Center, a grassroots organization that has been feeding homeless veterans for the past five years out of a historic three-story greystone that’s 122 years old. While volunteers try to help save the RTW Vet Center, the University of Chicago keeps its hopes high in landing the Obama Presidential Library and Museum across the street. Community activists believe the University of Chicago wants to force them out and purchase their property. But lately, the volunteer’s real battle has been about battling City Hall with little money and an uncertain future. At 5536 S. King Drive, the building has been a popular hangout for residents and a lively scene for drivers and pedestrians on the streets. Nearly one month after Chicago was picked as the site of the Obama Library, the RTW Vet Center was slapped with 32 code violations that would cost $52,000 to correct. City inspectors cited the building for having exposed electrical wiring, broken smoke detectors and a backed up sewer system. Because of problems with the furnace, there is no heat in the building. In addition to the code violations, the RTW Vet Center was in danger of being taken over by the city. The Leathernecks M.C., a group of Marines on motorcycles, were among a number of volunteers who came and made repairs to the RTW Vet Center’s aging building. The city gave the center until Tuesday, December 1, to correct the code violations or face $16,000 in fines per day. With only half of the repairs made, volunteers were worried that the cen-

2

ter would be forced to close after their efforts fell short of the city’s deadline. But in a courtroom that Tuesday morning at the Richard J. Daley Center in The Loop, about 20 volunteers from the center cheered after the city extended its deadline by another six months, giving the RTW Center until May to make the repairs. “Praise the Lord,” said Arnetha Gholston, RTW’s founder. The news encouraged Arnetha Gholston, who suspected the University of Chicago called the city’s building inspectors to examine the center’s building. In its early years, the school was known for establishing housing convenants that kept Blacks out of Hyde Park. University officials have denied playing a role in the city’s inspection and noted the RTW’s building is not part of the Obama library proposal. Tuesday’s move ensures that the RTW Center would continue serving the homeless through the holidays. With little to no funding the center manages to serve nearly 5,000 meals a month (as the repairs continue, that amount has been reduced to 3,200). The center also provides counseling, job placement and training to veterans. Last June, the center participated in a Hunger Walk at Soldier Field. RTW Center has no paid staff. All workers, including Gholston are volunteers who value the center. The center’s problems are far from over. The center’s kitchen is part of an enclosed back porch that is deteriorating. Because the kitchen was built before building code requirements, it was grandfathered in and not subject to modern city standards. That may change if RTW is forced to rebuild the room and a zoning variance would be needed before the work is done. It’s a lengthy process that could mean costly delays and problems for RTW and to the people the center serves. But with many repairs to go, RTW’s volunteers are taking progress one day at a time. “This place is an important part of the community. This center needs our help,” said Gayle Coco, a volunteer for RTW.

One down, two to go (Continued from page 1) more changes need to be made but is also focusing on changing the system that led to the debacle of the McDonald case. “McCarthy’s resignation provides more evidence that the African-American community, and those who care about it, must work together to bring significant changes in how justice is administered in our community,” said Chicago Urban League Interim President Shari Runner. “CUL continues to believe that outside organizations must be involved in

any plan to reorganize the way CPD conducts business.” Large unions like the SEIU and Chicago Teacher’s Union (CTU) also praised the move to remove McCarthy. The CTU released a statement which read the union is against police corruption and crime. The union is calling for “significant reform” of the department. While the CTU is currently focused on getting an elected school board, it believes the time may have come for there to be an elected police board as well. “We are negotiating for restorative justice programs in our

schools and for an end to the school to prison pipeline,” CTU said. State Sen. Kwame Raoul believes it will take a lot of time and hard work before the Black community can trust the police department again. He said too often the victims of police shootings in Chicago are young Black men. Raoul added the Independent Police Review Authority also needs to be questioned with how they operate seeing that the organization that is supposed to review all police shootings ruled the McDonald shooting as justifiable.

Suspects in Murder of Tyshawn Lee in Custody sitting in a car with a known gang member – the intended target. Former police superintendent, when announcing the arrest of Morgan told the media he believes the department is close to apprehending all of the suspects in those murders as well. He credited the community for stepping forward and giving his detectives the information they needed to make arrests in Lee’s case. “We received a lot of tips and solid information in this case and that is how we were able to affect so many arrests,” McCarthy said. “It’s a credit

By J. Coyden Palmer Just weeks after an exclusive Chicago Crusader report on a series of murders that may have been related to the grotesque murder of nine-year-old Tyshawn Lee, the brother of one of those murder victims has been arrested and charged with slaughtering Lee. Officials confirmed his death was the result of the ongoing gang war the Crusader reported about. Corey Morgan, a known gang member to Chicago police, has been charged in the case along with two other men. Morgan is the brother of Tracey Morgan, who was killed on Oct. 13 in a drive-by shooting at 82nd and Lafayette. Morgan’s mother was also shot in the incident but survived. Police believe that shooting was the reason Morgan targeted the Joplin School second grader as he sat on a swing set Nov. 2 at Dawes Park. An arrest warrant has also been issued for Kevin Edwards, 22, and a third suspect Dwright Boone-Doty is already in custody. According to Cook County prosecutors, the trio was sitting inside a black SUV around 4 p.m. at Dawes Park when they saw Lee. The three engaged the boy while he was playing on the swing set. Two of the men returned to the vehicle while another one lured Lee to a nearby alley. Lee was

to the people of Auburn/Gresham that stepped up because they want their community back.” The Crusader also received similar information from area residents. Prosecutors and police would not discuss the role each of the suspects played in the crime. However in court, Canellis did state the SUV believed to have been used by the suspects in the murder had been recovered and that the Global Positioning System in the vehicle showed it had been parked in the area of the park from where Tyshawn was lured.

In an ironic twist, Karla Lee, mother of the slain child, said she knew Morgan and was stunned he would have killed her child. She said the two used to play together as children. McCarthy said the department is committed to incapacitating the remaining gang elements to put an end to the feud once and for all. Tyshawn’s father, Pierre Stokes, was of no help in apprehending the suspects, according to police. Police and neighborhood sources tell the Crusader he is also a suspect in several other crimes in the Auburn/Gresham community.

Foxx gains more endorsements for state’s attorney Corey Morgan shot five times, with the fatal one being a shot to the head, prosecutors alleged in court. They said Morgan had vowed revenge after the killing of his brother. “He allegedly said since his brother was killed and his mama was shot he was going to kill grandmas, mamas, kids and all,” said Assistant State’s Attorney George Canellis Jr. The Crusader has previously reported that Tracey Morgan was the third fatality in the recent gang war, which began in August when Adarius Hayes was murdered. That was followed by the murder of innocent victim Brianna Jenkins, who was

SEIU Healthcare Illinois this week endorsed Kim Foxx for the office of Cook County state’s attorney in the upcoming March primary election. Foxx is one of three candidates seeking the democratic nomination. Foxx has received endorsements from Representative Jan Schakowsky and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Members and staff of the union representing 92,000 healthcare and child care workers in the Midwest echoed their concerns about the criminal justice system, particularly as it impacts young people. “Kim’s life experiences make her keenly sensitive to the importance of early childhood education and devel-

opment in helping children to become productive adults,” said union Executive Vice President Greg Kelley. “She understands that breaking the ‘school-to-prison’ pipeline in Cook County requires fresh ideas and a new approach, given that so many of our youth, especially our youth of color, are caught in this cycle. “The State’s Attorney’s office should be a watchdog against public corruption and for public integrity. The plague of corruption in Cook County has been saddled with unfair and unjust outcomes for people on the margins and the current State’s Attorney appears to have turned a blind eye to the practices of

officials who are doing the bidding of special corporate interests and harming working families. Foxx, a child of a single mother who grew up in the Cabrini Green housing development, has worked in the office of the Cook County Public Guardian, as an assistant state’s attorney and as chief of staff for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. She has made reforming the juvenile justice system and strengthening the wrongful convictions unit cornerstones of her platform. “For these and a host of other reasons, the members of SEIU Healthcare Illinois are proud to endorse Kim Foxx for the office of Cook County state’s attorney,” he said.

Protests persist as calls grow for Emanuel to resign (Continued from page 1) Justice asking for a federal probe of Chicago Police Department’s practices, which have often been criticized for its abrasive culture and code of silence among police officers. At a vigil outside of the police headquarters on Monday, two white women—Lauren Awtry, 20, from Lincoln Park and Adria Willett, 39, from Ravenswood, a suburb northwest from Chicago— joined a diverse crowd of 500 people who participated in a peaceful demonstration that called for changes in the police department after watching the video of Officer Jason Van Dyke shooting McDonald. “It’s such a tragedy,” Awtry said. “I can’t believe what the family is going through.” Willet said Van Dyke’s indictment of first-degree murder charges is “a little late. The church needs to bring us together. I think race and class are coming together during this crisis.” Despite the firing of the Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy on Tuesday, residents from Chicago’s affluent neighborhoods and suburbs have joined protests, vigils and meetings throughout the city to express their distrust in Emanuel as he struggles to restore www.chicagocrusader.com

his credibility as the city’s most powerful leader. On Wednesday—one day after McCarthy’s ouster—Black leaders and retired Black police officers held a meeting and a press conference on the South Side to discuss a possible replacement for the open position. There were reports that Chicago’s highest-ranking Black police officer—retired First Deputy Superintendent Alfonza (Al) Wysinger— was a possible replacement, but the Crusader could not confirm whether Wysinger attended Wednesday’s meeting. Wysinger’s possible candidacy may set up a possible showdown with Hispanic elected officials who support Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante, who was given the position after McCarthy was fired on Tuesday. Escalante, a 29-year veteran on the force, was promoted to First Deputy Superintendent after McCarthy announced Wysinger’s retirement in October. During his 30-year career on the force, Wysinger was credited with reducing crime in some of the city’s neighborhoods. In his announcement to retire, news reports stated Wysinger said he wanted to spend more time with his family. McCarthy’s appointment of Es-

calante reportedly angered Black elected officials who wanted Wysinger replaced with another Black high-ranking police officer. The appointment of Escalante reportedly triggered calls for McCarthy’s resignation by Black leaders in October. As high-ranking Blacks on the city’s police force remains a concern, so does the future of Emanuel’s mayoral career. Since the release of a video that showed McDonald being shot 16 times by Van Dyke on October 20, 2014, Emanuel and Alvarez have been under fire for taking more than a year to bring first-degree murder charges against Laquan’s killer. Despite firing McCarthy and appointing a six-member police task force, many in Chicago still believe Emanuel is a leader who can no longer be trusted and should step down as mayor. Many local and state leaders emailed the Crusader expressing their concerns that Emanuel’s termination of McCarthy is not enough to regain the trust of the Black community and Chicago. While some say the mayor fired McCarthy to save his own job, many more have called on the mayor to step down, saying the distrust he has created is irreversible.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Participants in several protests that have been held at numerous sites in the Chicago— from City Hall to the Chicago Police headquarters—shared those concerns. On Monday, angry listeners on WVON AM Radio also flooded the airwaves during a talk show hosted by Cliff Kelley. At a community town hall meeting at Christ Tabernacle Church in Austin on Tuesday, Boykin was one of many who praised the firing of McCarthy, but he also expressed concern about Emanuel’s credibility and his appointed six-member task force. “This task force the mayor appointed today…he appointed those people, not the community. Let’s be real,” Boykin told the crowd. “We need every official from the state and the city to be investigated from top to bottom,” said Reverend Ira Acree, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church in Austin. “The police belong to the people, not the mayor. If there is corruption in the system, one rotten apple will taint the whole barrel.” The meeting was attended by various officials from the NAACP; state elected officials and Alderman Chris Taliaferro (29th). Several of the city’s Black officers were also in attendance. Boykin said they called his office seeking to participate in

the discussion. One of the officers who attended the meeting, Eddie Johnson, a 26-year veteran police officer, is deputy chief in the Bureau of International Relations. “I’m here to listen to what solutions you have because we get it,” Johnson said. “The police can’t fix this alone. We need your help in helping us with this.” Johnson explained the role of the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA) is disciplining officers who are involved in controversial shootings. He went on to say the process is a long, but necessary one, to effectively investigate a police shooting. But, Boykin commented, “The IPRA is useless. Since 2007, the IPRA has had 400 cases and only one officer has been disciplined (for gross misconduct).” At the meeting, numerous residents voiced their distrust and anger at the city and police department. Cameilla Williams, 26, a community activist who grew up on the South Side, questioned the credibility of many of the city’s Black leaders, whom she believes were aware of Laquan’s case as it languished in the hands of Alvarez and Emanuel. “It’s time for transparency,” she said. “It’s time for accountability.”

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL IS THE SLEEPING GIANT AWAKENING? The recent Thanksgiving Holidays were very eventful in the African American community. For a long time now we have anguished over the proper and most effective way to combat the issue of police brutality. This past holiday something very special happened - many young African Americans and their allies of diverse races came together and actually shut down Michigan Avenue and the so-called Magnificent Mile. They blocked traffic and in so doing the community has flexed its mighty muscles in a campaign to boycott Black Friday. From all indications, the strategy seemed to work, with millions of dollars lost while big stores closed early or altogether during the demonstrations. The catalyst for this latest foray into active struggle was a videotape released showing 17 year old Laquan McDonald being shot 16 times by police Officer, Jason Van Dyke. The actual murder occurred in October, 2014. And yes, it was a murder. The videotape clearly shows McDonald walking down the street, away from the police when he was shot. He fell into the street, and as he lay there, the officer continued to shoot him. Altogether, there was a total of 16 shots, most of them occurring while Laquan was down. Office Van Dyke apparently wanted to make sure that the teenager was DEAD! Several things are interesting about this case. For one, why was the videotape released at this time after a year had lapsed. Certainly, those in a position to know, i.e., Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel knew what the tape revealed. They also knew that it would provoke outrage, and they were no doubt prepared for any violent uprising. Thankfully, and probably very disappointing for some, there was no violent uprising; there was no looting and senseless burning of businesses in the Black community. Instead, Black Chicagoans and those who came to support them chose a very proper strategy, one that can have far reaching ramifications and can pave the way for a new economic order and social change. It was as obvious as the sun in the heat of summer that Laquan McDonald was blatantly killed, and that his murder was covered up. A Burger King Restaurant employee has even come forth saying that cameras which could have captured the event were erased by the police! Incredibly, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez has denied the notion that the tape revealed what it revealed; she reportedly said that it was not an obvious murder, because the tape did not show what happened before McDonald was shot. Never mind that he was shot while walking away, and was shot multiple times as he lay dying in the street. Also, just as ludicrous, Officer Jason Van Dyke has said that he “feared for his life” which is why he shot Laquan. Any officer that is so afraid that he would shoot and kill someone walking away multiple times need not be on a municipal police force. Such a person is dangerous and delusional, but more likely just filled with racist hatred. It has been said that Van Dyke had exhibited abusive behavior multiple times in the past. As the tapes were being released, Officer Van Dyke was arrested and charged with first degree murder. His bond was set at $1.5 million. This may have been met with relief by some members of the community who may feel that they have finally seen the justice system work correctly. It also probably helped prevent anticipated violent behavior. Cynics, however, are looking at the situation with a jaundiced eye. In order for a charge of first degree murder to stick, it must be shown that there was premeditated intent. In such a case, this will be hard to prove, since an officer working in the line of duty may not have anticipated the encounter and, therefore, the murder couldn’t be premeditated. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. A chief take-away from this entire debacle, though, is the power that can be wielded by the Black community when money is spent strategically. A caution: the ultimate goals of the boycotts must be determined, whether they be more fair treatment by law enforcement or something else. Also, it would be prudent to make sure that the money withheld from corporate America finds its way into Black coffers in this new movement toward Black empowerment. The sleeping giant is no longer snoring, and hopefully, will be fully awake soon! A luta continua

The beauty of seeing the crowds on Michigan Avenue the day after Thanksgiving was that finally the gap is being bridged. It was obvious the millennials were leading the activities, and simultaneously it was heartening to see “the old guard” there in solidarity with the young people. For too long it seemed the two could not coexist in our community. There has been a steady grumbling by young people that the likes of Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Congressmen Bobby Rush and Danny Davis, should step back and let the young ones be the leaders. After Friday it looks like they now understand no one gives up leadership and power; it must be taken. Not only did the young people take the leadership, they got results. They definitely got the attention of the retailers in the city’s most prominent shopping stretch - North Michigan Avenue. No doubt that those high end retailers will be letting Mayor Rahm Emanuel know how unhappy they are that the protesters caused many of them to close shop early. Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. Hopefully the young folks have a strategy for what is next. Every

major civil rights protest took more than one or two days to be successful. If they don’t have a strategy it would be good to get some insights from Rev. Jackson about the next steps. They surely don’t need him to provide a blueprint, but he has more front line experience with planning and participating in demonstrations and disruptions. In the meantime, all of us need to continue to encourage these emerging young leaders and stand at the ready to help, regardless of age. Donald Frazier

Phillips gave us what we needed Dear Editor: Black Chicago, particularly young Black Chicago, has been rocked hard in the last several weeks. It seemed like nothing but bad news was coming out about our young people, especially the murders, victims and perpetrators. But Wendell Phillips Academy’s football team gave us something to cheer about last week. Yes, the victory got overshadowed by politics and the mayhem in the city. So, if we didn’t do it then, we certainly need to applaud the Wildcats for becoming the first CPS team to win the state 4A championship. As the saying goes “they didn’t just show up, they showed

out” beating Belleville Althoff Catholic 51-7. We all need to let these young men know we appreciate their dedication to hard work and their pursuit of excellence. There definitely should be a citywide celebration for the Wildcats. Chicago surely can use a dose of positive news. More often than not when we see CPS in the headlines or on television news, it is associated with some sort of problem. For a (Continued on page 17)

COMMENTARY

What happened to Black Business Loans? Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford During the 2000 Presidential Election, President George W. Bush made a written pledge to the National Black Chamber of Commerce® (NBCC). He claimed that he would focus on the doors leading to increased capital access for minority businesses. To our astonishment, he delivered on that pledge while Candidate Al Gore refused to make such a pledge. Thus, begun eight years of positive growth in Small Business Administration (SBA) lending. The above activity soon began to disappear for two reasons: The effects of the subprime mortgage crisis and the lethargic activity coming out of the Obama SBA. President Obama figured the quick fix would be more and more regulation. In 2010, he signed the Dodd – Frank Amendment which poured “mountains” of paperwork and rules for our banking institutions. The push back was major banks began refusing to underwrite small loans, inclusive of the guaranteed SBA loans. When President Bush stepped down the SBA was doing over 8% in loans to Black businesses. Today, under the Obama

Harry C. C. Alford Alford Harry apathy and immense regulations, the SBA is doing less than 1.8% in lending to Black businesses. It got worse than this, the SBA began attacking the NBCC for letting out the news of the downward trend. They even claimed that I had no access to the percentages of loans because no one tracks them. To my surprise, George Curry, who was editor of the National Newspaper Publishing Association took their “bait” and began believing them over the NBCC. Finally, after a white investigative reporter from the Wall Street Journal confirmed my allegations,

George came around. According to the Valley Economic Development Center, “SBA loans to African-Americans declined 47 percent between 2009 and 2013, even as overall SBA loan volume rose roughly 25 percent during the same period.” Doesn’t this paint the picture? The subprime mortgage crisis devastated the net worth of Black families. That net worth was based on equity in our homes. The homes have disappeared in many of our communities and with it went the equity which made new entrepreneurs bankable. The biggest players in the mortgage business were Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. These two Government Sponsored Enterprises are now “owned” by the Obama Administration as he virtually “seized” them as they approached bankruptcy. Will they bounce back? That is doubtful as right now the Obama Administration is trying to liquidate the two firms. We are fighting against this effort. The above should be a hot topic during the presidential debates but so far there has been no traction. We are going to bang the “drums” much harder for it to become a major political issue. Despite the lack of finan-

cial activity, African American firms offer a direct path to job opportunities. Our restaurants, service providers, IT shops, construction companies, etc. are the key to our growth and financial gain. The lifeblood for these companies is upstart capital and that necessity is fading under the current Administration and it is paramount that the next Administration will address it with a vengeance. There is one hidden blessing coming out of the Dodd-Frank Amendment. Under current banking law, commercial banks cannot record the demographics of their lending (except SBA loans). This is called Regulation B. Our implementers of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 thought this would help prohibit discrimination. If there is discrimination in lending what better way to detect it than tracking the numbers and volume? We have been fighting for the expulsion of Regulation B for over twenty years. Thank God it is going away by way of the Dodd-Frank Amendment. It has been taking years to happen but within the next three years, under a new Administration it is going to happen. Hopefully, our Congressional Black Caucus will focus on this opportunity and police

the activity. Two other things can help our plight also. 1. Lenders must target certain markets such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and other markets that have a high amount of Black population and Black business opportunities and 2. We must recruit more EB-5 investors into our communities. A holder of an EB-5 visa can migrate to this nation with special status providing he or she invest at least $500 thousand (soon to be $1million) into an underserved community. Chinese, Saudis, Indians etc. are participating in this program in an exponential way. What a wonderful program to take advantage of! It is time for Black community developers and leaders to pick up the pace in EB-5 activity for their neighborhoods. The National Black Chamber of Commerce is dedicating 2016 to the emergence of more capital access for our business members. The plans will start unfolding early next year. Stay tuned. Trump’s Racism Fuels His Popularity By George E. Curry George Curry Media Columnist It appears that every time Donald Trump unleashes another vile, racist or hateful diatribe, the more his support grows among his Republican base. “Just in the past few days, Mr. Trump has repeated the lie that President Obama intends to admit 200,000 Syrian refugees; the correct number is 10,000. He spreads the lie that thousands of American Muslims openly celebrated the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center; in fact, there were no such celebrations. He tweeted a false statistic that Blacks are responsible for 81 percent of murders of white victims; in fact, 82 percent of whites are killed by whites,” the Washington Post noted. “These are not random errors. All of them appeal to the basest instincts in supporters; they reinforce fears and prejudices. All of them, Mr. Trump knows by now even if he did not know when he first stated them, are false, but he does not care.” On the phony crime stat, “The graphic cited the Crime Statistics Bureau - San Francisco - which does not exist as its source,”said MediaMatters, the watchdog group. Even if the bureau existed, the number is wildly off-target. For 2014, the www.chicagocrusader.coM

George E. Curry FBI provided the following figures: * Blacks killed by whites: 7.6 percent.* Whites killed by whites: 82.4 percent.* Whites killed by blacks: 14.8 percent.* Blacks killed by Blacks: 90 percent. As a Washington Post blogger observed: “And just to be clear, it is race-baiting, and nothing else. In neither case is there even a remote connection to some kind of legitimate policy question. When Trump says falsely that thousands of people in Jersey City (which has a large Muslim population) were celebrating the destruction of the World Trade Center, he isn’t making an argument about Syrian refugees. He’s simply saying

that you should hate and fear Muslim Americans. When he tries to convince people that most white murder victims are killed by Black thugs (again, false), he isn’t arguing for some policy approach. He’s just trying to foment racism and convince racists that he’s their guy.” Trump even praised supporters for beating a Black protester and struck a new low by mocking a reporter with a physical disability. When New York Times reporter Serge F. Kovaleski, who covered the attacks, denied Trump’s account, the candidate mocked Kovaleski’s arthrogryposis, a condition that limits his arm movement. Jerking his arms, Trump said, “Now, the poor guy you’ve got to see this guy, ‘Ah, I don’t know what I said! I don’t remember!’” Instead of owning up to his obnoxious remarks, Trump denied mocking Kovaleski. Instead of slumping, Trump’s poll numbers have remained steady. Quinnipiac University regularly asks Republican voters to identify the candidate they refuse to support. Trump has always had the largest number, but the latest Quinnipiac poll in November found only slightly more people willing to say they would not vote for Trump than those who will not vote for Jeb Bush. How does Trump get away with such outlandish and demonstrably false assertions and not pay for it in the polls? First, he

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

is tapping into raw racism. A recent poll conducted by CNN and the Kaiser Family Foundation found that approximately half - 49 percent - say racism is a “big problem” in society today. “The figure marks a significant shift from four years ago, when over a quarter described racism that way,” CNN observed. “The percentage is also higher now than it was two decades ago. In 1995, on the heels of the O.J. Simpson trial and just a few years after the Rodney King case surged into the spotlight, 41% of Americans described racism as ‘a big problem.’” Second, Trump’s competitors are timid about criticizing him. Either, they fear his scorching counterattacks and/or do not want to alienate his followers, whom they may need to court in the event Trump fizzles. Only Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and to a lesser extent, Jeb Bush, have demonstrated any courage taking on Trump. Texas Senator Ted Cruz, the likely benefactor of a Trump withdrawal, has said virtually nothing critical of Trump. And New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, in all his bluster, has wimped out in the face of Trump’s egregious lies. Asked about the non-existent cheering crowds of Muslims in his state, Christie said, “I think if it had happened, I would remember it, but, you know, there could be things I forget, too.” That’s not something the former federal pros-

ecutor would likely forget. The news media should also provide more context in debunking Trump’s incendiary remarks. Writing in Salon, Jack Mirkinson observed, “The mainstream political media has such a pathological dedication to the notion of balance and ‘objectivity’ that it often finds itself at a complete loss when it comes to dealing with someone like Trump. But the kind of filth that he and others are putting out has long since moved past the debatable stage. There is an Islamophobic crisis building in this country. To oppose discrimination against Muslims is not to take some partisan stand. It’s to be a human being. To oppose a prominent political figure’s use of fascistic slander toward Black people is not to shirk your objectivity. It’s the least the elite media should be doing.” George E. COMMENTARY

FREE OUR POLITICAL PRISONERS Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill

One of the critical demands of the Reparations Movement is the release of African in America political prisoners. The issue of African in America political prisoners often gets swept aside in our demands in the Reparations Movement. This should not be. There are many sisters and brothers who have sacrificed much for the liberation of African people in America and are locked up unjustly in America’s prisons and are political prisoners. When we discuss political prisoners, we are talking about “those persons harassed, arrested, framed, and imprisoned because of their relatively peaceful political activity against the destructive conditions that their people live under.” The goal of our political prisoners has been “to transfer power from the corrupt and racist business people, government officials, pseudo intellectuals, policemen, judges, and jailers and keep them down to a captive nation of people to be free.” We should all be aware that Marcus Garvey, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Sister Callie House, and Huey P. Newton spent time in jail because they fought for our freedom, just as Brother Mu-

mia Abu Jamal remains a political prisoner for his uncompromising political journalism. The origin of the campaign that has resulted in the more than one hundred women and men who are locked up in America’s prisons as political prisoners, many of them Africans in America, is related to the “secret war” that was waged against the Black Liberation Movement by the FBI. Former FBI Bureau Director J. Edgar Hoover, in the 1960s and 70s led this campaign. This illegal and top secret onslaught was called the “Counterintelligence (COINTELPRO) program that targeted Black activists and organizations.” Its goal was to disrupt, dismantle, discredit, and neutralize Black groups and leaders, thus seriously crippling our movement. They were successful. That is why it is important for African people in America to join the Reparations Movement and help rebuild the Black Liberation Movement. One of our critical demands of the Reparations Movement must be the freedom of our political prisoners and prisoners of war. The Jericho Movement explains, “The issue of whether or not po-

litical prisoners and prisoners of war exist inside the borders of the United States of America is one that the government of the United States has successfully been able to refute. They have been able to deny the existence of political prisoners and prisoners of war because we have not taken the battle to them and forced them to address this issue.” We can begin publicly addressing the issue of our political prisoners, in a massive way, on August 17th at the Million For Reparations Mass Rally and ignite, educate, and inspire our people to expand the Reparations Movement to include, as a key component, our political prisoners. In this context, the Jericho Movement further explains that there “are brothers and sisters, men and women who, as a consequence of their political work/or organizational affiliations were given criminal charges, arrested or captured, tried in courts and sent to prison. While trying them as criminals, the government maintained files on them referencing their political activities, designed to insure they remain in prison.” We must expose this tactic by the United States Government in our

demands that our political prisoners be freed. The Reparations Movement must be more energetic in demanding and calling for the release of our political prisoners and prisoners of war that include Jalil Bottom, Charles Sims Africa, Debbi Sims Africa, Herman Bell, Kojo Sababu, Lorenzo Stone Bey, Mark Cook, Mumia Abu Jamal, Mutulu Shakur, Ojore Lutalo, Phil Africa, Richard Mafundi Lake, Robert Seth Hayes, Sekou Kambui, and Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. It is only fitting that we remind ourselves that the Honorable Marcus Garvey, was one of our first political prisoners targeted by the United States Government, indicted on the trumped up charges of mail fraud and convicted. The masses of our people in the mid1920s demanded Garvey’s release from prison. In 1927, more than 100,000 African people demonstrated and protested that he be released. Garvey was released in 1927 and deported from the United States as a condition of his release. Let’s free our political prisoners by joining the Reparations Movement and help intensify our demands for their release.

ACTS OF TERRORISM By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist I am among the tens of millions who had to be peeled away from their television set on Friday, November 13 and in the days after ISIS terrorists randomly massacred at least 130 people and wounded hundreds more in Paris. Then, there was the nearly 30 people executed at a hotel in Bamako, Mali. And there were the several threats against New York City, and the Presidential and police responses to those threats. This terrorism has caused fear and insecurity in France, Belgium and the United States. Terrorism is defined as the use of criminal acts to inspire human fear. ISIS engages in their criminal acts to create a sense of instability in parts of the Western world. Days after the massacre, those who planned and participated in the carnage were found, and some were killed (or blew themselves up). Catching these few terrorists will not stop. Some of the commentary have appeared on news programs urging the United States and others to consider the “root causes” of ISIS, and some think that actions in the West are to blame (consider the Charlie Hebdo attack and those who blamed a mag6

azine cover for the assassination of journalists). I’m not sure this is the most appropriate or compassionate response so quickly after the terrorist attacks. Still, these are questions that must eventually be answered. What should our response be? Is this war? Are we prepared to endure another Vietnam, committing U.S. lives to a ground war that is perhaps unwinnable? We can expect more security and scrutiny, and appropriately so. It is also unfortunately likely, however, that some of the scrutiny will have an element of profiling (especially racial profiling) involved, since many (perhaps most) of the ISIS terrorists are young, male, and Muslim. But despite Donald Trump’s jingoistic insanity, do we want to stop everyone who “looks” like a Muslim. What does a Muslim look like? What does a terrorist look like? Just a few days before the Paris massacre, the news was dominated by Black student protests around country, at the University of Missouri at Columbia, and at Ithaca College, Yale University, Smith College, Claremont McKenna College and the University of Kansas. Many of these protests were in solidarity with the Mizzou students and in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter move-

Dr. Julianne Malveaux ment. There is no comparison between what happened in Paris and what has happened on many campuses, it occurs to me that the “n—“ word bandied about is an act of terror that is designed to make African American students feel insecure and unsafe. This is why the students who ask for “safe space” should be encouraged, not ridiculed. Strewing cotton balls on the lawn in front of the Black culture center on the Mizzou Campus is an act of terror, designed to exploit feelings of insecurity. It is neither a trivial act, nor a prank, but an act of hate. It is especially hateful when the perpetrators are fairly certain that they will not be caught and

that there are few consequences for their actions. In the domestic context, anonymous terrorism is especially unsettling because one rarely understands exactly who the terrorists are. Anonymous terrorism reminds me of the KKK, the criminals who only felt safe when they hid behind hoods and sheets. Campus racism has long-term consequences for young African Americans. Some will learn how to protest and carry the spirit of protest with them for the rest of their lives. Others, unfortunately, will learn to “go along to get along,” internalizing the lessons of intimidation. They are the young people who dismiss racism as “no big thing.” But it was a big thing when white Tulsans burned down Black Wall Street, and no one stood in solidarity. Lynching was a terrorist act, but Congress would not pass anti-lynching legislation. Those terrorist actions took place in the early 20th century, but later Bull Connor was a terrorist. George Wallace was a terrorist. Comb our history and you’ll find any number of terrorists who perpetrated criminal acts against African Americans. Those who ignored those criminal acts create a climate where racial terrorism can occur. The white thug who massacred nine people at Emanuel AME Church in

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

South Carolina committed a heinous act of terrorism. The people of Emanuel fought back with a loving defiance. They wouldn’t stop going to church, they wouldn’t stoop to hate. Still, the slaughter of nine people had a national impact. The people of the United States mourn with our brothers and sisters in Paris as they sort through the aftermath of death, wounding, and destruction. We stand in solidarity with them against the evil that ISIS represents. And we stand in solidarity with the domestic terrorism that pollutes the atmosphere at some of our nation’s college campuses, and in other public spaces. The University of Missouri President Timothy Wolfe who refused to address campus racism was sanctioning terrorism. I shudder about what happened in Paris, and I also shudder at those who find domestic racial terrorism acceptable. If carnage in France provokes war, what should racial terrorism in the United States provoke? Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist based in Washington, DC. Her latest book “Are We Better Off? City Treasurer Kurt Summers Addresses Disinvestment in Chicago’s Neighborhoods Discusses Cost of Inequity in Justice System at City Club of Chicago on First Anniversary in Office Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers recently spoke to inequity in the justice system and disinvestment in Chicago’s neighborhoods as it relates to the more than 500 shooting deaths that have taken place in the City since the death of Laquan McDonald on Oct. 20, 2014. The Treasurer’s remarks took place at the City Club of Chicago, exactly one year after taking office as Treasurer. “Throughout this first year in office, the people and stories of this City have bolstered my resolve in Chicago and our potential to achieve great things together,” Treasurer Summers said. “However, as taxpayers, we can no longer afford the high cost of injustice, disinvestment and inequality. If we truly want to be one Chicago, we need to invest in all of our City. This is an economic problem and should be a problem for every Chicagoan.” Treasurer Summers laid out a sense of inequality in low-income

predominantly minority communities, where a lack of investment and access to capital has led to distrust, disenfranchisement and eventually, despair, resulting in a lack of the value of life. This has led the local government in Cook County to spend more than $1 billion on the jail and court system and $71 million on a juvenile detention center. The City of Chicago spends $2 billion on police and police pensions annually, has spent $500 million in court settlements over the last decade and more than $300 million in criminal justice or other public assistance. Meanwhile, unemployment rates for Chicago’s Black and Latino communities are over 25%, there are more than 20,000 troubled buildings in the City and roughly 20,000 homes in foreclosure. Relative to the over $4 billion spent on the criminal justice system, a mere fraction of that is spent on community investment and opportunities for neighborhoods to thrive. “This use of resources is inherently unequal and ultimately costly,” the Treasurer added. In his speech, the Treasurer rec-

Congresswoman Kelly hosts Apprenticeship Roundtable to Foster Employment Congresswoman Robin Kelly hosted an Apprenticeship Roundtable aimed at better promoting training and internship opportunities for in-demand jobs in manufacturing and the trades. The roundtable brought together manufacturers, colleges and workforce development experts to create ways to increase enrollment in training programs, align programs to meet employer needs and tailor programs to non-traditional students, including those retraining for new careers. The meeting was held at the Matteson Public Library. “We need to do more to inform students at a younger age about high-paying vocational opportunities that do not require a fouryear degree,” Kelly said. “Employers have often told me they’re finding it difficult to fill vocational and manufacturing positions because people are not taking advantage of local training programs. We discussed ways we could collaborate to ensure future workers are being trained to fill lucrative job openings in manufacturing the trades.” www.chicagocrusader.com

Treasurer Summers called on others to follow suit and encouraged banking partners who benefit from city deposits to invest back into Chicago and provide access to capital in more communities. Treasurer Summers is committed to ensuring the office’s core principles of transparency and accountability are the foundation to creating an inclusive system to invest in all Chicagoans. Over the past year, the Treasurer has transformed office operations and implemented a new investment policy, a minimum credit quality and maximum risk standards to guide how the office responsibly invests taxpayer dollars. Additionally, as a result of putting underinvested dollars to work, the Treasurer’s Office is projected to increase returns by 40 million dollars next year alone that will go towards city services. The Treasurer also reported significant progress on an initiative he launched one year ago to create significant savings on annual investment fees for all of Chicago’s public employee pension funds. Eight of the City’s 11 funds have signed on to a joint resolution to share information on how much in fees they pay to investment managers. Now, the Treasurer’s Office will partner with the funds to launch an online database or “clearinghouse,” to promote collaboration among the retirement plans and so they

can work together to reduce those fees. The initiative has the potential to save more than $25-$50 million a year or $1 billion over the lifetime of all 11 pension plans. Treasurer Summers serves as the City’s banker, investor and advocate, overseeing Chicago’s $7 billion investment portfolio. He also

serves as a trustee or fiduciary on five of the City’s public employee pension boards with $25 million under management. Since taking office in Dec. of 2014, the Treasurer has worked to provide taxpayers with greater transparency and efficiency to ensure a responsible investment approach and drive value for residents in each of Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods.

The Laquan

Mayor, Alvarez under fire a Black clergy to hold massive voter registration drives Vow to dump Alvarez By Chinta Strausberg Saying getting rid of Police Supt. Garry McCarthy is not enough, several ministers are revving up for a massive voter registration drive in hopes of defeating State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and any other elected official involved in the cover-up of the police video shooting of 17-yearold Laquan McDonald. Some of those ministers speaking out were the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., Pastor Ira Acree, pastor of the Greater St. John Bible Church and Rev. Yehiel Curry, a member of the Community Renewal Society and pastor of Shekinah Chapel. Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins (D16th) and other elected and religious officials also agreed that McCarthy’s departure was just the beginning of a deeper systemic police problem they say needs fixing. Putting the mayor and Alvarez on notice, at 9 a.m., Thursday, December 3rd, Bishop Larry D. Trotter and Bishop James Dukes are holding an “accountability” meeting at Sweet Holy Spirit Church, 8621 S. Chicago Avenue, to demand answers from the mayor. They want to know the mayor’s alleged involvement with the tape showing officer Jason Van Dyke shooting McDonald 16 times in 15 seconds. They also want the release of all similar tapes involving police shootings, an elected police review board,

10

release of all settlements and police brutality cases and a copy of agreements with the families. Earlier on Tuesday, Rev. Jackson said, “Until we get the police culture challenged and a special prosecutor appointed, we cannot stop” the demonstrations. He wasn’t alone in his reaction to McCarthy’s resignation. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan weighed in asking the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the police department. Madigan wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking her to investigate the police department’s internal review process and to see if there is a “pattern of discriminatory policing...and use of deadly force.” Acree said getting rid of McCarthy “is a necessary step that the mayor had to take. He had no other choice. The people spoke. Corruption seems to be embedded from the top of the department all the way to the rank and file.” Pastor Acree said what the mayor has done is “not enough…too little, too late.” He wants to know all of those who knew about the tape including the nine other officers he said were on the scene when the teen was shot. He wants an independent prosecutor because he suspects there is “collusion between the mayor’s office, the police superintendent’s office and that of the state’s attorney’s office. Acree also called for State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez to resign. “Whether

SATURDAY, December 5, 2015

she resigns or not, we can take her out” come election time, he stated. On Tuesday, December 8, the Leaders Network of which Acree is co-chair, is holding a monthly meeting where Cook County Clerk David Orr will talk about voter registration. Acree wants 100 churches to each have two deputy registrars to register their members. He said this is the best way people can vent their feelings on what he calls a “betrayal of our trust” by the mayor, the top cop and Alvarez. Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin said, removing McCarthy was necessary “but an insufficient first step because without systemic reforms, the divide between law enforcement and communities will not be healed.” Illinois Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins (D-16th) called for the appointment of a special prosecutor. “To be effective, our outrage must be focused, our demands specific and sharp,” Collins said. “Charging Jason Van Dyke with first degree murder is not enough. “There was a cover-up, and anyone involved in it must be held accountable. If we do not tear down the blue curtain of silence once and for all, Laquan McDonalds will continue to die in our city. We must never forget that the videos, and the truth, were not simply handed to us. Instead, they were ripped from reluctant hands by journalists, citizens and the courts,” said the senator. Collins introduced a bill calling for police reform. It provides a procedure to appoint a special prosecutor in cases like McDonald’s. Collins said the bill becomes law in January. “It must be used to help bring to jus-

tice rogue cops and those who cover for them,” Collins said. Collins also called for the resignation of State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez. “She has failed in her responsibility to timely, openly prosecute a heinous crime that not only took a life but betrayed the public trust.” As a board member of the Community Renewal Society, Pastor Curry said they want an independent auditor to look at the practices of the police department and all of its boards, make recommendations “without being controlled by those you are supposed to be policing,” said Curry. Curry’s group has offered the Freedom Through Accountability, Investigation and Reform for Community Oversight of Policing Services (FAIR COPS) ordinance to the City Council “but they never acted or accepted the ordinance. It would have created a Police Auditor Office, which would inspect the entire system of policing patterns of misconduct, call for investigations of police abuse and implement policy change. “This is a proposal that the Community Renewal Society presented to the mayor three times over the last year. At our last meeting in October, we walked out of the meeting because of his refusal to even consider that change was needed,” said Curry. He said the aldermen were more interested in trying to get someone else to replace McCarthy. Sources say that someone was former First Deputy Al Wysinger, an African American who recently retired. The mayor has launched an outside search with a March 2016 deadline. On the police accountability the mayor appointed, Curry said, “We’ve

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

seen that game before. They would basically do the same thing that the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA) board is supposed to do….” Curry said the new board “is another committee that’s basically run by Mayor Emanuel. This is just a fourth group that is being dictated by the Fifth Floor. What we are looking for is real authentic change.” Curry’s members said in a statement, “What happened to Laquan McDonald is not the result of a single bad police officer. It is a consequence of a broken system.” They criticized the mayor for not fixing the problem and for not making police more accountable. “Over the last five-years, the Chicago Police Department killed more civilians than any other police department in the country; yet not a single officer has ever been fired for an unjustified shooting,” Curry’s group said in a statement. Referring to the department’s Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA), the group said it “recommended discipline for a meager 128 officers out of more than 10,000 complaints of excessive force.” To add insult to injury, the Society said, “In the rare cases that IPRA and the superintendent agree that a police officer should be fired, the Police Board has overruled this recommendation and allowed an officer to return to duty more than half of the time.” And Rose Joshua, president of the Southside NAACP chapter, wants to meet with the mayor and said the ouster of McCarthy “had nothing to do with police reform.” She said this is just the beginning of a long process to reform that troubled police department. www.chicagocrusader.com

The Lion King returns with two Chicago Natives Chicago’s Limited Return Engagement at The Cadillac Palace Theatre Playing now through January 17, 2016 Broadway In Chicago recently announced casting for the return engagement of Disney’s The Lion King. Nia Holloway, who plays “Nala,” is originally from Markham, Illinois. “Coming home to Chicago to play Simba feels like my own Circle of Life, after seeing The Lion King for the first time at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in 2005 and then working with Broadway In Chicago as an usher,” says Nelson. The production also features Patrick R. Brown as “Scar,” Gerald Ramsey as “Mufasa,” Mukelisiwe Goba as “Rafiki,” Drew Hirshfield as “Zazu,” Ben Lipitz as “Pumbaa,” Nick Cordileone as “Timon,” Keith Bennett as “Banzai,” Tiffany Denise Hobbs as “Shenzi” and Robbie Swift as “Ed.” The role of “Young Simba” is alternated between BJ Covington and Tré

‘Creed’ shows creative stamina of Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler “Creed” is such a good movie, and the combination of director Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan brings collaboration from this pair that we witnessed in “Fruitvale,” the story of Oscar Grant, who was killed by police in San Francisco during the first days of the year 2009. “Creed” brings Jordan, who plays Adonis Johnson, and Sylvester Stallone, who plays Rocky Balboa, together, as Creed continues his quest to be a boxer. He has left his job with a brokerage firm and leaves Los Angeles to move to Philly in search of his roots, maybe, but certainly an opportunity to box. Up until then, the film reveals that Creed had been in foster homes, until his “adoptive grandmother” Phylicia Rashad, who is Creed’s widow, comes to take custody of him. He is young and had been getting into trouble at the group home because he enjoys fighting. Rashad, who maternally plays Mary Anne, isn’t pleased with Creed boxing and a little upset

Harry C. Michael B.Alford Jordan that he decides to leave his luxurious home to follow his dream. Creed is a little rough around the edges; he needs training, even though he has won fights in Tijuana, Mexico. He shows up at Adrian’s restaurant, named after Rocky’s late wife (all the background is detailed in the six-saga Rocky franchise of films that begin in 1976.) Creed carries on the tradition of this

The North American touring productions of The Lion King have been seen by more than 15 million theater goers and grossed over $1 billion to date. Having already played more than 70 cities across North America, The Lion King now proudly makes its Chicago return at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. About The Lion King In its 18th year, The Lion King remains ascendant as one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 22 global productions have been seen by more than 80 million people and, cumulatively, run a staggering 112 years. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), The Lion King is only the second show in history to generate five productions worldwide running 10 or more years. Translated into eight different languages (Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese), productions of The Lion King can currently be seen on Broadway; London’s West End; Hamburg; Tokyo; Madrid; Melbourne, Australia; Mexico City; and on

franchise. Rocky isn’t too keen on the idea of Creed just showing up, as he isn’t interested in training anyone, anymore. But Creed sort of grows on him, and the chemistry between the two men is magnificent! Creed is tough as nails, and Jordan delivers a fine performance. Rocky is Rocky, and his lines and stubborn demeanor fit into the mode, but he gradually softens, while still winning our hearts after all these years. Tessa Thompson from “Dear White People” fame stars as Creed’s love interest and is as beautiful as ever. She at first is more interested in her music than Creed. But when you are holed up in a starter Philadelphia apartment, fate takes its course, and the two end up together, but not before Creed is baptized in all that is “Philly Cheese steak.” Creed finally reclaims his “name,” after having been reluctant to do so, and travels to London to fight the reigning champion there. At the end of “Creed” it appears that this is such a good franchise that can continue, as long as Stallone is around and vested in a film that has made him big bucks. The movie is inspirational, entertaining, nostalgic (for those who have been around long enough to see the first Rocky), a love letter to Philly and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (which is the spot where the Rocky statue sits). I’ve been to Philly a couple of times, and the first time, our guide was excited to show us the statue and the great curation inside the museum itself. “Creed” was number three at the box office for its first weekend. It’s playing at theaters throughout the area.

THE BOOKWORM SEZ “Naughtier than Nice”

By Eric Jerome Dickey c.2015, Dutton $25.95 / $33.95 Canada 357 pages You have to tell somebody. There’s a secret inside you, one you’ve been keeping far too long and you’re about to burst. You need to talk about it. You need some advice, some perspective. As in the new novel “Naughtier than Nice” by Eric Jerome Dickey, if you don’t talk about this issue soon, it could be the death of you. Last Christmas Eve had been a

memorable one for Frankie McBroom, for the wrong reasons: that was the day she spent thinking about how to cancel her wedding to Franklin Carruthers. He’d been her soul mate, her one-and-only… until she discovered that he was a married man. As the eldest McBroom sister, Frankie felt as though she needed to set an example and she fought hard to forget Franklin. She wished her relationship with him had been like what youngest sister Tommie had with her Blue. Or like what middle sister Livvy had with Tony. But no, Frankie had something else altogether. Tommie McBroom felt bad that she was cheating on her fiancé. Down deep, she loved Blue but he’d betrayed her: he knew how much she wanted a family and yet he’d had surgery to prevent it, which proved that he didn’t care about her. Beale Streets, on the other hand, listened to her. Yes, Beale was a few years younger than Tommie, but that didn’t matter when they were making love.

The Lion King returns with two Chicago Natives (Continued from page 12) tour across North America and Japan, for a total of nine productions running concurrently across the globe. Having played 20 countries on every continent except Antarctica, The Lion King’s worldwide gross exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or other entertainment title in box office history. The Lion King won six 1998 Tony Awards®: Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), Best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), Best Choreography (Garth Fagan) and Best Direction Of A Musical. The Lion King has also earned more than 70 major arts awards including the 1998 NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the 1999 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album, the 1999 Evening Standard Award for Theatrical Event of the Year and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design. The show’s director, costume designer and mask co-designer Julie Taymor continues to play an integral part in the show’s ongoing success. The first woman to win a Tony Award for Direction of a Musical, Taymor has in recent years supervised new productions of the show around the world. The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from The Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of The Lion King is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award®-winning song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to the haunting ballad “Shadowland.” The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed The Lion King animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co- wrote the film’s screenplay. Other members of the creative team include: Michael Curry, who designed the masks and puppets with Taymor, Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design), Michael Ward (hair and makeup design), John Stefaniuk (associate director), Marey Griffith (associate choreographer), Clement Ishmael (music supervisor) and Doc Zorthian (production supervisor). Anne Quart serves as associate producer. For more information worldwide, visit LionKing.com. www.chicagocrusader.com

The delicate chain surrounding Livvy McBroom-Barrera’s ankle spoke to Livvy of different times, of days when she and Tony were estranged and she first slept with a woman. The charm on the

chain reminded her of things she learned, and lovers who disappeared from her life so suddenly. She thought of them often – especially when she and Tony brought another woman to their bed.

It was hard to believe that a year had gone by since Frankie caught Franklin in a lie. So much had happened since last Christmas, so much that wasn’t discussed. Tommie’s life was taking a turn. Livvy’s life seemed to be going backwards. And Frankie? She was dealing with a blown-up phone, an acidruined car, bricks through her windows, belongings rearranged in her home. Frankie was dealing with a stalker… So you like a little spice with your Christmas nog? Or maybe some extra pepper in your peppermints? Then “Naughtier than Nice” will make you very jolly. In this somewhat-sequel, author Eric Jerome Dickey made a list of everything you want in a holiday drama – cheating, scandalous pasts, sex, murder, and light humor – and it’s obviously checked twice to add even more of the above. Although this book can be read as a standalone, readers then get to revisit some of Dickey’s best characters from other novels. His usual themes are mashed-up, and there’s a very nice gotcha or three scattered throughout this book. That, and the fast-moving action, made me ho-ho-ho for this not-so-holiday holiday book and Dickey fans old and new will love it. Just beware: start “Naughtier than Nice” and you’ll just have to tell somebody.

WORLD OF MUSIC By Barbara Wright-Pryor

Barbara Wright-Pryor ‘Tis the season to ‘Messiah’ By Barbara Wright-Pryor Once gain, the Christmas Holiday season is upon us. The Salvation Army volunteers are out with the red kettles to receive contributions to share with the less fortunate, shoppers are bustling around looking for bargains and gifts to give on Christmas Day, and everywhere musicians are rehearsing for their annual presentations of George Fríderic Händel’s monumental oratorio, “Messiah.” “Messiah” is not only presented during the Advent and Christmas seasons, but during the Lenten season as well. For some attending the various performances of “Messiah” this year, this will be a first hearing of the masterpiece as it was traditionally performed in England during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This style, coupled with the

exuberance of Black churches, is what many will hear, while others will hear “Messiah” in the Baroque style that Händel wrote in 1742 as heard in the recording by Sir Neville Mariner and Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Still others will hear what Quincy Jones adapted in his work, “Joyful Celebration,” or other productions that convert Händel’s arias and choruses into contemporary versions that gospel lovers enjoy and traditionalists frown upon. Several performances leaning on the traditionalist and more closely akin to the version composed by Händel will be presented during the month of December. Four of those presentations will be held: Sunday, December 6 at 3:30 p.m., Charles T. Hayes will guest conduct the Choir of Morgan Park Presbyterian Church, 110th Place and Longwood Drive, Classic Act Choral Ensemble, The Chatham Choral Ensemble, guest choristers, instrumental ensemble and organ for the church’s 14th annual performance of George Fríderic Händel’s “Messiah.” Soloists are Rae-Myra Hilliard, soprano; Vickie D. Johnson, mezzo-soprano; Jeffrey Burish, tenor; and Arthur D. Griffin, Jr., baritone. Fabienne C. Christian is Coordinator and The Rev. Jane Tuma is pastor. Donation is $20; Students, $10. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking humility value others above yourselves (Philippians 2:3).” The only race is the human race. Sometimes I look around in utter disappointment and think whatever happened to us as a community of caring people. It seems that we have become our worst enemy thus increasingly violent towards each other. Whoever heard of American terrorists? Nowadays that’s just another awful fact that we have become familiar with hearing. At one time, even African Americans were known as a kind and gentle people, but now there is tremendous anger and frustration which has caused hostility towards our brothers and sisters. The love we had is gone. Matthew 24:12 states, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold…” Whatever happened to being a good neighbor? When did we as a people become so callous hearted that we can get on the elevator with a neighbor or co-worker and not even smile or speak? The law

By Effie Rolfe Give Love Away—don’t wait until Christmas Day. Lord knows what the world needs now is love sweet love—that’s the only thing there just too little of… In light of the many tragic events in the news lately, these powerful lyrics of love from a few of my favorite songs come to mind. The thought of a nine year old being shot to death, or a police officer killing the people they are to serve and protect, as well as someone killing folk at a planned parenthood clinic is heartbreaking. What makes this even sadder is these events seem to be a neverending cycle. Only God’s love can make the difference. I’ve often shared that the greatest barometer of God’s love is to share His love with everyone. Love is an action word—it’s nothing until you give it away and one of its off springs is being courteous to each other. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in

of reciprocity is about sowing and reaping. Let us forever be reminded that whatever you give out will come back. An age-old adage is ‘what goes around comes around.’ Thus, the golden rule reminds us to ‘…do unto those as you would have them do unto us’ (Luke 6:31.) It appears the mantra of today is ‘to do others before they do you.’ Your outward reflection is indicative of what’s going on in the inside. Could it be that all of this is simply because of a lack of selflove and self-respect? We need to go back to the old time way— when we spoke to our neighbors, opened the door, smiled and said a simple thank you to God and his people. If not, we will appear to be simply robotic human like creatures with no interpersonal skills and absolutely devoid of God’s love. This message of love is for everyone. We can all use improvement when it comes to sharing love in every area of life. Let’s start with a smile. Greet someone at

work, home, church or on the street with a friendly ‘hello’ or a smile. This is applicable in person or on the telephone—trust me you can hear a smile. Lastly, faults are like headlights—you always see someone else’s first. Instead of desiring love from others—let’s become the agents of change when it comes to sharing love. Love God’s way will make the world a better place for people and generations to come. Most of all, I believe God would be pleased. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another (John 13:34). Will you give love away today...? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. This particular production is no different. In a world where marriage is no longer honored and singleness is overly sensual and sexual, “Worth the Wait Too” will remind both men and women alike of their value and their worth in Christ.” “This production is filled with laughter, tears, and a strong inspirational message for any age group. It is ideal for church groups such as women’s ministry, single’s ministry, or young adult or married ministries.” Tickets cost $25 for the Dec. 11 and $22 for the Dec. 12 performances. 16 DAYS OF PROTEST Ima wants to take her hat off to the young people who have orchestrated the demonstrations, from Black Friday, to the hood, to the Police headquarters. Dese young people have by and large conducted themselves admirably. In this instance they have demonstrated and debunked that Black folks won’t demonstrate in the wintertime and dey have not looted or torn up their own neighborhood

and any other neighborhood. It is obvious that we are all upset about this and many other killings, but they GOT it: Demonstrate, but do not Destroy property or steal just because you can. Their tactics, in the spirit of Rosa Parks and Dr. King are winners. And the respect that dese young people gave to their elders: Jesse Jackson, Congressmen Davis and Rush were commendable. The “Black Lives Matter” movement is on the move. Thank God!!

Serving My Country and My Community (Continued from page 7) you are connecting to something that is close to you. I got my first taste of volunteer service while working at Northwestern University football games, providing security with my ROTC unit. Although it is a big responsibility to man the gates and help with crowd control, I wanted to do more. One day on my walk home, I decided to stop by a teen center in my neighborhood where I used to take part in afterschool activities. Now that I am a little bit older, I realized that I wanted to help out and give back to my community, so I decided to step

up and become a mentor at the teen center. As a mentor, I try my hardest to be there for the kids in any way that I can. I offer advice, encouragement and let them know they can always talk to me if they need help. I take a great deal of pride in being someone the kids know and trust. This is just one of the ways I hope I can pay it forward in tribute to those who have been instrumental in my life. Without the advice and encouragement from people like my Navy recruiter and my teachers at Ombudsman, I would not be where I am today.

You Get What You Give Although volunteering or offering your service might seem like hard work, there are countless rewards to giving back. Connecting to others, making your community a better place and taking your mind away from any of your own personal problems are just a few benefits I have seen. Giving back is something I plan on doing for the long run and I hope that my influence will encourage the kids at the teen center, my classmates at Ombudsman and my family and friends to do the same.

Nigerian gospel jazz duo Twinsax wants your soul out song Kilolese, meaning ‘What Can You Not Do Oh God’ featuring fellow Nigerian vocalist Prospa Ochimana was produced by Sampro, hearing it made me pay extra attention to this jazz duo. Kilolese by Twinsax has been described by the older twin; Marvelous Taye, as “that kind of music that gives off a cool tempo and puts you in a relaxation zone where you are encouraged to meditate on the goodness of God in your life.” The song also happens to be their first single and was released on October 4, 2015: their birthday. Their debut single in their opinion is a divine orchestration of the Holy Spirit. They say the comments and testimonies they have received from fans across Africa and the world who have supported it has left them greatly humbled and encouraged to press on with their quest to spread the word about the Kingdom of God. According to the younger twin Innocent Kehinde, “hitting the roof in 16

However, one really needs the very right kinds of networks backed by a strong passion for good music and put in relentless efforts to discover their big break.” They both say “we have always had the ability to captivate our audience and we believe we get a lot of our energy from them. Our fans will continue to remain the reason we do this because this is what God put us here on this earth for. We don’t want fame just for the mere reason of being famous; all we want is to simply win souls for God. That alone will be great achievement for us.” Listening to the brothers speak greatly evokes their raw passion, which is why I was not surprised by their answer when I asked them what they would have been doing if they weren’t playing the saxophone or doing gospel music — “Preach-

For now though, the Ayodele brothers are riding on all the support and attention they are getting from friends, fans and players in the Nigerian music and media industries. Their hope is to obtain the needed sponsorship to finance their desire to participate in more events across Africa and eventually the world. The wait has been long but “we have always believed that when God is involved, then all will soon be resolved”. State Champions at Last!

Phillips Makes History by Becoming First CPS State Football Champs By J. Coyden Palmer It took 42 years and a few just misses, but the Phillips Wildcats became the first Public League team to win a state championship after defeating Althoff Catholic 51-7 in the Class 4A championship Nov. 27 at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb. The Wildcats finished the season 14-0 and came home to a heroes’ welcome at the Bronzeville school on Monday. Congratulations poured in from around the city for the school, which five years ago underwent a major restructuring in academic curriculum and teaching staff. “It’s everything we thought it would be,” said Head Coach Troy McCallister on the celebrations. “You can tell it has been a weight lifted off the city school’s back and we’re proud to be the ones who did it for so many others who had gotten so close.” Phillips won in dominating fashion as they had done all year. They scored 51 unanswered points after falling behind early 7-0. Using their superior speed and offensive blocking scheme to run all over Althoff, the Wildcats were led as they have been all season by senior

quarterback Quavon Skanes. He finished the game with four rushing touchdowns on 13 carries and threw for another score. The University of Connecticut recruit said he wanted to make his final prep game a memorable one. “I’ll never play with this group of guys ever again and I wanted to enjoy it,” Skanes said. “This is a lifetime memory I will never forget and neither will any of the other guys. This win meant a lot to us and a lot of alumni.” What makes the win more remarkable are the challenges the players and coaching staff at Phillips face on a daily basis. The team practices with only footballs and pads because the school cannot afford traditional football equipment like blocking sleds, tackling dummies and other essentials. The players also live in various neighborhoods that come with their own dangers. Principal Matt Sullivan said when you put in all those factors, in addition to them being students, what they accomplished is inspirational on so many levels. “The players have an hour study hall after school,” Sullivan began. “They then get their pads and walk down to Mandrake Park to prac-
