School fighting to stay open By Wendell Hutson Students, parents and staff at Aldridge Elementary School on the far South Side are
worried that if their school is closed next year due to underutilization it could end up being another Derrion Albert situation. Like so many of the city’s public schools

would then be transferred to another nearby school. “I don’t want my school to close. I like going there. All my friends are there,” said Ashanna Herron, 8, a second grader at Aldridge. “(Besides) it is safe at my school. I know everybody but if I have to go to a new school I might not know anyone and that scares me.” Most of the children who attend Aldridge live in the Altgeld Gardens public housing complex, according to CPS data, just as those students who previously attended Carver Military High School, which is also located near Altgeld Gardens. But when CPS changed Carver from a neighborhood school, which allows any student who lives in Carver’s boundaries to attend the school, to a selective enrollment school, which does not have to accept local students, troubled ensued. Three years ago Albert, who also lived in Altgeld Gardens, was transferred to Christian Fenger Academy High School in the Roseland community from Carver as a result of the school change and it cost him his life. Conceal carry law supended by Appeals Court Advocates now seeking to move forward with passing a law allowing people to pack By J. Coyden Palmer A federal court this week in essence told the Illinois legislature to go back home and do it again after declaring the state’s ban on a concealed carry law unconstitutional. State lawmakers will now have 180 days to craft legislation that will allow qualified Illinois residents the right to carry concealed handguns. The ruling by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals comes as

gun rights activists have been turning up the pressure in recent weeks on Illinois lawmakers. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Shawn Gowder, vice president of the Chicago Firearms Safety Association and who successfully sued the city earlier this year on its current gun ordinance, which did not allow anyone convicted of unlawful use of a weapon from getting a city gun permit. “Since 1982 we’ve been under siege with these unconstitutional gun ordinances…and these draconian laws heaped upon the law-abiding citizens of the City of Chicago.” Gowder said the latest ruling will help the Black community because now people will not be easy targets of prey for those who are wreaking havoc in the neighborhood. NEWS Coalition of ministers come out in support of indicted lawmaker By J. Coyden Palmer Indicted state Rep. LaShawn Ford got another boost of support from a coalition of ministers in his district early this week as he faces federal charges. Since he was indicted on Nov. 29, Ford has maintained his innocence and has gotten overwhelming support from his constituents and community organizations in his West Side district. According to the 17-count indictment, Ford, 40, lied on a loan application to get a $500,000 increase on a million dollar line of credit from Shore Bank. Ford allegedly submitted false tax returns that inflated his personal and business income to increase the line of credit. Shore Bank was seized by federal regulators in August 2010. Ford pleaded

Pastor Robbie Wilkerson of New Birth Christian Center is a lifetime West Side resident and a friend of Ford’s. Wilkerson commended Ford for going to college and graduating to create a lucrative business and then serving the public in state government. He said the representative’s image is critical for a community that suffers from several social ills. “We’re able to point at him and say to our sons, ‘this is what you can be if you just do the right thing,’” Wilkerson said. “We want to use Ford as an example to MORE THAN A dozen ministers lay hands on indicted state Rep. Acree said Ford grew up in the community, had a business in the community and ever since he became an elected official, “has worked tirelessly to improve the community.” Acree said Ford deserves the benefit of the doubt at this point and plans on standing by Ford throughout the entire process. “Many of us have worked with him down through the years and we know him to be an honest man,” said Acree, co-chairman of the Leaders Network. “He’s been a politician who has worked on behalf of the people of this district. From what I know of him he is one of the most selfless individuals I’ve ever met. After hearing him again proclaim his innocence and based upon what we know of him, we all stand together united in our support of him.
“This disappointment is going to turn into unity,” Ford added. “This situation has given us the opportunity to grow closer as a community. I want to thank everyone for believing in me and saying ‘we know he is innocent.’ Because the truth is, the only people who are going to say I’m innocent are me and the jury. The people here today are merely saying that ‘they find it hard to believe that LaShawn did wrong. It’s important that the truth is told and the person that I am is expressed not just from me, but from people who know me. Life
Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, was officially sworn into her fourth term in office by Chief Judge Timothy Evans at 7:00 a.m. In turn, Clerk Brown gave the official oath of office to members of her Executive and Senior Staffs and other employees at the morning program. In her remarks to staff, Clerk Brown said, “The Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court plays a vital role in the legal system as the official keeper of the records of all judicial matters brought into the court system, and by maintaining these records in an unbiased, safe and secure manner we help to ensure equal justice for all.”

Former Cook County Board President Bobbie Steele served as Mistress of Ceremonies and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle delivered remarks, praising Clerk Brown’s administration. Clerk Brown’s inaugural address revolved around the theme, “The Future is Now,” a discourse on how the plans her office has been working hard to develop over the past 12 years are currently unfolding, such as the scanning of court documents, electronic filing and other “green” court initiatives. Clerk Brown stated, “Today, I stand here
looking back over the years and I can say that... our thoughts and our acts have created our future and our future is now! So we will drive courageously forward with transparency, accountability, and the integrity of service we have shown the citizens all of these years.” Clerk Brown also publicly announced the advent of two new technological innovations for the Clerk’s Office: a redesigned web site and a mobile app. A reception immediately followed the inaugural celebration in conjunction with a Clerk’s Office Open House featuring tours of each division. NEWS Letters from Wilmington Ten prosecution witness confirms frame-up By Cash Michaels Special to the NNPA from the Wilmington Journal (WILMINGTON, NC]) – His name was Allen Hall. In 1972, Hall was the star witness for the prosecution in the conspiracy trials against the Wilmington Ten – ten civil rights activists, led by the Rev. Benjamin F. Chavis – falsely accused of firebombing a whiteowned grocery store during the height of racial violence in Wilmington in 1971. According to New Hanover County prosecutor Jay Stroud, Hall, a convicted felon, had the goods on Chavis and the others, and could confirm details of the arson conspiracy. There was just one problem – in order to get Hall to falsely testify, Stroud had to keep the young troubled Black man happy. How happy? In a forty-year-old prison letter dated August 16th, 1972 – a copy obtained exclusively by the Wilmington Journal newspaper last week from prosecutor Stroud’s infamous Wilmington Ten court files being kept at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Wilson Library – Allen Hall wanted the prosecutor to keep him happy. “Just a few lines to tell you that I need a woman,” stated the very first
sentence of the letter from Onslow County prison inmate Hall (who was known as “Allen Graham” behind bars so that other inmates wouldn’t know he was working with a DA) to prosecutor Stroud. Later in the missive, Hall tells the prosecutor, “You feel like a father to me, and that is why I call on you so much when I need someone.” Saying that he didn’t have a father when he was growing up, Hall writes Stroud, “You make me know the real Allen, and what life is about. But the love that what (sic) I have for you is what a son have for a father. To me you are that father I never had.” Hall writes about not caring what Black people in Wilmington, or apparently one of his girlfriends, “Deborah,” thinks about his testifying against Ben Chavis. And yet, Hall openly struggles with the idea that he will, and how it could hurt his family, apparently at the direction of prosecutor Stroud. “Will my love (sic) ones have a bad time for me [if] I tell on Chavis [?],” Hall writes. “My mind is going up and down, and around, when will it stop. How many times will I ask myself this over and over [?]” By the end of the three-page letter, Hall is literally begging Stroud to let him see either Deborah or another apparent girlfriend, “Antionette.”

Conceal carry law supended by Appeals Court (Continued from page 1) the rabbit’s got the gun,” in a stern warning to gangbangers who Kelly believes have been able to prey on residents withour fear of reprisal. Crete resident Dr. Paula Bratich, a veterinarian, and state coordinator for the Illinois chapter of Second Amendment Sisters , said the ruling is a result of people in Illinois starting to wake up and not let politicians with their own agendas affect people’s everyday lives. Bratich said the push for education about guns via flyers and town hall meetings all around the state have changed people’s perception about guns. Rev. Kenn Blanchard, author of the book “Black Man with a Gun: A Responsible Gun Ownership Manual for African Americans” said he was thrilled with the news when he learned from his home on the East Coast. Blanchard said the ruling means Black people now have a choice and a chance to define whether they are going to be self-defense advocates or not. But Gowder, Bratich and Blanchard all said they are concerned that Illinois lawmakers, particularly African American legislators from the Chicago area will somehow try and make some sort of deal that will make carrying in Chicago and Cook County more difficult than in other areas of the state. In its 2-1
ruling and following opinion, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals Justice Richard A. Posner wrote: “A Chicagoan is a good deal more likely to be attacked on a sidewalk in a rough neighborhood than in his apartment on the 35th floor of the Park Tower. A gun is a potential danger to more people if carried in public than just kept in the home. But the other side of this coin is that knowing that many law-abiding citizens are walking the streets armed may make criminals timid.” That opinion is shared by many who have been pushing for concealed carry and the man who in 2010 took the city all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and won, Otis McDonald. He said he was overjoyed when he walked in the house and his wife told him the news Tuesday afternoon. “I couldn’t say anything at first, because this just hit me out of nowhere,” McDonald said. “My wife and my daughters told me what happened and I just sat there wondering if this was the real thing. Once I realized this was real, I said this ruling is even better than if House Bill 148 was passed because it carries more weight. Most crimes happen outside of the home. And with this ruling, many of the concessions that were made in HB 148 can be taken out because the courts have

does not allow people to take their registered weapons from their homes to even their front porch, backyard or garage. At least one city council
member is in favor of concealed carry and believes the council, because of the ruling, will now have to completely revamp the city’s ordinance.
School fighting to stay open (Continued from page 1) a group of local youth beat Albert to death because he was not from the neighborhood and therefore seen as an outsider, said Chicago police. “That is what I am afraid of the most,” said Donald Parker, 39, an Aldridge parent. “My son is no fighter but a good kid trying to get an education. He does not know anyone in Roseland and if CPS closes Aldridge as rumored, then he would have to go to another school.” At Crusader press time, CPS officials would not confirm or deny that Aldridge is being considered for closure. That decision will not be made known until March when the Chicago School Board is required by state law to make public a list of schools slated for closure. The Commission on School Utilization, an independent fact-finding board chaired by retired ComEd CEO Frank Clark, held a community meeting recently at St. Sabina
Church on the South Side. It was the second of at least five meetings that will take place before the commission makes recommendations in March to CPS on closures, consolidations, reassignment boundary changes, phase-outs, or co-locations. The next scheduled community meeting is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14 at Horner Park, 2741 W. Montrose Ave. and a fourth meeting is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 2262 W. Jackson Blvd. Clark reiterated at Monday’s meeting what he has said repeatedly. “We will continue to listen to communities’ concerns, seek their input and gather data that will help us make sensitive, informed recommendations to CPS,” he said. “But right now we are at a starting point.” Barbara Byrd-Bennett, chief executive officer for CPS, said based on its 20th day enrollment data half of Saturday, December 15, 2012
its 600-plus schools are underutilized and changes are imminent. One reason for the shortage of students is because of a shrinking Chicago population especially among Blacks, said Harold Lucus, a community activist and chief executive officer of the Black Metropolis Convention & Tourism Council, a neighborhood non-profit organization. According to 2010 census data, Chicago lost 140,000 residents since 2000 in part because of the demolition of high-rise public housing buildings. And many Blacks who resided in those buildings have relocated to suburban areas, Lucus added. All Altgeld Gardens resident and Aldridge student Nafhira Byars, 14, wants to do is continue going to school. “Why can’t they [CPS] leave our [those located near Altgeld Gardens] schools alone? Didn’t they learn from the Derrion Albert tragedy?” she said. 3
OPINION
EDITORIAL SCANDALOUS BEHAVIOR OR RACISM? Are African American politicians disproportionately targeted for bad conduct when it comes to politics? Black people were very proud when the first Blacks were elected to public office. When Richard G. Hatcher was elected to be the first mayor of Gary, Indiana, Black Americans rejoiced for his achievement. Now, Black elected officials number in the thousands, and there are Black Caucuses in the United States Congress as well as in local governments across the country. This means that, to a certain extent, Blacks have arrived. Apparently, we have also arrived at the trough of greed and misconduct, if the growing numbers of public officials caught with their hands in the cookie jar attests. Or is something else at work? Are African American politicos being specifically targeted because of skin color? A few of the high-profile names involved in political scandals or allegations of wrongdoing include Rep. Charles Rangel, Rep. Maxine Waters (who was exonerated), Baltimore’s first female mayor Sheila Dixon, former Louisiana congressman William Jefferson, former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick of Michigan (interestingly Kwame Kilpatrick’s mother). Most recently in Illinois, a whole spate of elected officials currently under the spotlight. These include Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., State Rep. Derrick Smith, former Cook County Board President Todd Stroger, Cook County commissioner William Beavers and State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford. Interestingly, a huge group of individuals are vying for Jesse Jr.’s congressional seat which he recently vacated, and among them is Mel Reynolds, who formerly occupied that seat but was ousted because of wrongdoing. It’s hard to believe that intelligent, accomplished individuals who are in the spotlight would act in such a manner that would jeopardize their reputations and political futures. Yet, apparently, it continues to happen. Does greed cause a type of ethical blackout so that people act without thinking? Does libido get in the way of right action? If the number of people caught with their hands in the till or with their pants down is an indication, apparently it does. Dr. Ronald Walters, a former political science professor at Howard University and an advisor to the Congressional Black Caucus says, in an online Op Ed piece written by Myranda Stephens entitled “Are Black politicians easy targets?” states “I’ve always been under the assumption that black politicians were an easy target. We all know…racism is an institution in American culture. When something like that happens, I don’t stutter.” Dr. Walters’ perspective might be believable when you consider that several years ago seven African American congressional leaders were being investigated by the House ethics committee, but not a single White lawmaker was the subject of a full-scale ethics committee probe at that time, according to a report cited in the same article. It just might be true that Black politicians are scrutinized more readily than their White counterparts, but if they are found doing something unethical, it doesn’t make a difference. Wrong is wrong. And if they know that they will be placed under a special microscope, it would seem that extra precautions would prevail. More importantly, if we are to develop and maintain strong Black communities, we must develop new models of behavior for ourselves; we should not emulate those who have oppressed us, especially those who are ethically corrupt. We must walk in the light of a new truth in order to break the bond of psychic enslavement. Hopefully, those who have been caught will serve as a deterrent to those who come behind them. A luta continua.
I am sure I wasn’t the only one who was shocked by last week’s arrest of State Senator Donne Trotter. Trotter has been a solid representative for his South Side district ever since he got elected. Therefore, it was really hard to believe he tried to get on a plane while carrying a gun. I think what is equally bothersome is the follow-up by a lot of Black people I have encountered. So many of them fit into one of two categories – those who are making fun of Trotter and the gun; and those who have already decided Trotter is guilty as charged and should be removed as a candidate for the Second Congressional District House of Representatives seat. Many of the ones making fun of Sen. Trotter are saying he is a hypocrite because he voted against a proposed bill that would allow citizens to carry concealed weapons. Those are the people who are not reading the legislative report of the discussion for that bill. Trotter voted against it because the bill did not contain any conditions that would make it mandatory for gun purchasers to go through a certain number of hours of training. Others are disputing whether Trotter’s story about forgetting the gun was in his carry-on bag. I guess we won’t know until it comes out at Trotter’s hearing

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Trotter’s arrest raises questions Dear Editor:
what his role is at the AllPoints Security Company where he says he works. Supposedly, his work there is the reason he had the gun. I seriously doubt if a court, a lawyer or anyone will ever be able to prove whether Trotter forgot he had the gun in that bag. Public opinion will determine how believable the story is. Trotter’s bid for the Second Congressional seat should not be in jeopardy. The gun charge is not that serious. It is in the same felony category as possessing a fake ID. As voters we need to get our questions answered about Trotter, just to satisfy some curiosities. Afterward, it is time to move on and recall Trotter’s long and distinguished career in the legislature – both chambers. His record over the years is far more important than one bonehead move. If we start disqualifying people from public office because they got in to some minor trouble soon we will only have people with no life experience.
Emanuel and McCarthy should admit it Dear Editor: It is time for the mayor and the police superintendent to admit they don’t know what the hell is going on when it comes to fighting crime. Emanuel still hasn’t learned just because he can bully aldermen and ordinary citizens his tactics don’t work on gangbangers. (Continued on page 16)

At his age, 62, Trotter should have been more careful, much more careful. As my grandfather would say, he should have “steadied himself.” Our society is quick to find people guilty before they ever get to their arraignments. Trotter needs to answer the host of questions out there, and the people need to put this incident in perspective.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
The High Cost of Corruption By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Most people think of corruption belonging exclusively to the Third World. Actually corruption is everywhere. Sometimes it is rampant like a plague and sometimes it is subtle and very hard to detect. Let me tell you about corruption that I have experienced. First, let’s look at the United States. When I started doing advocacy work in Indiana I made a pledge to myself to not get stuck in any funny corruption stuff. I would help businesses make new found millions of dollars and would not accept a fee or kick back. Free trips, cash, sex and everything else you can think of confronted me and I repulsed them all except for one time. I opened some doors for a personal friend of mine. In fact, this new opportunity became history for Black owned business in Indiana. Subsequent to the victory he asked me for a ride to some destination and I obliged. As he was leaving the car he stated that he put an envelope on my back seat and I should “read” what was in it when I have time. When I opened the envelope I found ten one hundred dollar bills.
Harry C. Alford The above tarnished our friendship but somehow I got over the fact that I put those hundred dollar bills in my pocket. I lost no sleep but resolved to jump off that “slippery slope” and never tolerate such action again – no matter how much I or my family may need the money. Quid pro quo is a matter of business. Procurement agents who get along and do favors for major ven-
dors find themselves with high paying corporate positions the instant they retire. You will find buyers for state and city governments laughing it up at football and basketball games. Research the seats they were sitting in and establish the owner of them. If you really want to bust them, take a picture via your cell phone and then send it to the local prosecutor’s office. Also, only a fool who was getting monetary favors would report it on their income tax. That is another way to investigate their unusually high living standard than they report to the IRS. The majority of contractual activity within the Federal Highway Administration system has some form, major or minor, of corrupt activity. The U.S. Department of Defense had the Administrator of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business (a Black male) selling Mentor/Protégé contracts to Black owned firms. The culprit finally got busted via an investigation of the Chair of the House Small Business Committee (late 1990’s). This activity was somehow reported to the Committee and they implored the FBI to investigate. In the end, this guy and his assistant got a 28 year rap in a maximum federal prison – his
neighbor was the infamous John Gotti. The former Congressman Bill Jefferson got a thirteen year prison rap for doing something funny with $90,000 and Nigerians. At the same time corporate giant Halliburton was busted over a half billion dollars of funny stuff with Nigerians. They got no jail time but paid a very high fine. It’s kind of funny in this nation that when a Black commits corruption his punishment is infinitely more severe than a white counterpart. Now, let’s leave the U.S. and go international. Levels of corruption are active in our nation but overseas they are on steroids. In fact, in many nations it is considered straight up business. Recently, we have had a West African consultant tell us that the way to deal with bribes and pay offs is to enter it into your budget. That money is a “cost of sales.” Other companies will have a “bag man” within their firm who will meet (supposedly unknown to the owner) with his counterpart on the customer or procurement side. The money is exchanged and the business is won (or bought). The process is established for repeat business. When doing business in South America and Africa, Europeans/-
Asians completely understand this game and play along with it. Please don’t think that Europe and Asia are exempt of these games themselves. We, Americans should not deal with it and ride out this era of corruption until, one day, straight up business will be the norm and not the exception. The fact is that the cost of these practices will eventually be reflected in the price of the product or services being provided. Yes, the end user – consumer – will pay for them. How do we police this? Corporations and government buying offices should monitor the lifestyles and net worth of their employees and officials. The Defense guy I mentioned above gave himself away by buying a fancy car, taking lavish vacations, wearing expensive jewelry and, as they found out in the investigation, he had a bank account in the nation of Lichtenstein. Imagine, a brother from D.C. having a bank account in this enclave of central Europe. It is time for corruption to end. Word and Number Games played in Fiscal Showdown By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist It should be embarrassing enough that President Obama and House Republicans postponed making tough fiscal decisions by kicking the can down the road to New Year’s Day – when certain automatic budget cuts will go into effect unless they act to avoid what is called a fiscal cliff. Instead of moving quickly to solve their self-created problems, both sides continue to misrepresent basic facts. For example, House Speaker John Boehner [D-Ohio] has criticized the Obama administration for refusing to give a list of specific cuts. He said the administration “put $400 billion worth of unspecified cuts that they’d be willing to talk about.” FactCheck.org stated flatly: “Boehner is wrong.” It explained, “The president’s deficit-reduction plan, as proposed to Congress in September 2011, itemizes ‘nearly $580 billion in cuts and reforms to mandatory programs, of which $320 billion is savings from federal health programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.’ Those proposals are also listed in the president’s fiscal 2013 budget proposal in a section, beginning on page 23, titled ‘Cutting Waste, ReducThe Chicago Crusader
ing the Deficit.’ “The Medicare proposals, for example, are a mix of reduced payments to certain providers, including teaching hospitals and postacute care facilities – as well as the higher premiums and new fees for certain beneficiaries…” FactCheck.org, an organization that holds public officials accountable, also noted that Republicans are running a numbers game. “In a Dec. 3 letter to the president outlining the GOP counterproposal for deficit reduction, Boehner and other GOP leaders said there is ‘four times as much tax revenue as spending cuts’ in the president’s proposal,” the organization recalled. “The GOP math works like this: Obama’s proposal includes $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue and roughly $400 billion in spending cuts. In an email to us, Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said that ‘when Sec. Geithner made his proposal to us, the number he used – repeatedly – was $400 billion.’ However, as we mentioned earlier, on several Sunday talk shows, Geithner said the total savings comes to $600 billion over 10 years.” Both Republicans and Democrats are playing being selective in their choice of words. “In part, the discrepancy is a matter of language. Republicans are saying ‘spending cuts’ while De-
George E. Curry mocrats are saying ‘savings,’ ‘reforms’ and ‘spending cuts.’ But the more substantial difference between the Democrats’ and Republicans’ spending cuts-to-tax hike ratios is that Republicans do not count the $1 trillion in discretionary spending cuts agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011,” FactCheck.org states. “The White House argues those are part of the ongoing negotiations to resolve a deficit crisis. Nor does the GOP include the $800 billion ‘saved’ from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.” President Obama and Secretary of Treasury Timonty Geithner overstate and exaggerate the amount of spending cuts in the president’s plan, according to FactCheck.org. “On NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ Geithner said, ‘We have laid out a very

detailed plan of spending cuts, $600 billion dollars in spending in mandatory programs over 10 years.’ The president made the same claim in a Dec. 4 interview with Bloomberg News, saying his proposal has ‘$600 billion in additional cuts in mandatory spending.’ “It’s true that there’s nearly $600 billion in estimated savings from mandatory programs: $326 billion in health programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, and $254 billion in other programs, such as farm subsidies. But not all of these are ‘spending cuts,’ and the administration’s own deficit-reduction plan doesn’t label them as such – instead calling them a combination of ‘cuts and reforms.’ “There are tens of billions in new fees and surcharges and increased premiums in Medicare alone. Table S-10 of the revised fiscal 2013 budget proposal outlines numerous other new and higher fees under the section titled ‘Mandatory Initiatives and Savings.’” Amid the word and numbers games, the public is clear about what should be done, even if Washington isn’t. A Gallup poll in November found, “Forty-five percent of Americans now say they favor reducing the federal budget deficit with an equal balance of tax increases and spending cuts, up from 32% last Saturday, December 15, 2012
year. At the same time, the percentage favoring an emphasis on spending cuts is now 40%, down from 50% last year, while the percentage in favor of reducing the deficit primarily through tax increases is unchanged at 11%.” A Washington Post-Pew Research Center poll conducted Nov. 29-Dec. 2 found that a majority of Americans –53 percent – would blame Republicans in Congress if Washington fails to reach a deal in deficit talks to avoid the fiscal cliff. The survey found that only 27 percent would fault President Obama if negotiations between the executive and legislative branches of government fail, 12 percent would split the blame equally between the two sides and 2 percent have no opinion. Like Ronald Reagan, this could be Obama’s “make my day” moment. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
THE KWANZAA SEASON AND ECONOMICS (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF), located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill Kwanzaa is an African in America celebration based on African agricultural/harvest celebrations and collective principles which contribute to the unity and development of our community in the
United States. This is the 46th anniversary of Kwanzaa and the 43rd year of its celebration in Chicago. Kwanzaa was created to introduce African people in America to new values. Kwanzaa is a seven day celebration that is held from December 26 to January 1. These new values are called the Nguzo Saba or the seven principles of Blackness, “if practiced would give them (us) a set of priorities and commitments which would enhance their (our) human possibilities and lead to their (our) liberation and a higher level of human life.” The United States economy is suffering from the white supremacy arrogance of centuries of brutal exploitation of the world’s resources and its people. This era of United States history demands that African people in America place a greater degree of emphasis on our collective economic salvation. Once again, the old truth that “Black people are the last hired and the first fired,” is surfacing itself throughout the major employment centers in this country. Given this economic crisis, the Kwanzaa season helps us place the question of economics on the
agenda of our struggle. The eradication of our economic slave condition must continue to be a major challenge as we enter the twentyfirst-century. It cannot be stated enough that we are far too dependent on Europeans and Asians for our food, clothing and shelter. The principle we commemorate during the Kwanzaa season that speaks to this issue is Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics). This principle encourages African people in America “to build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.” On the fourth day of Kwanzaa, Wednesday, December 29th, this principle is celebrated. In this regard, it is important, once again, to state Malcolm X’s economic philosophy of Black nationalism. Malcolm said: “We must be re-educated to the importance of controlling the economy in which we live by owning and operating the business in the community we live in and developing some industry that will employ our people so we won’t have to boycott and picket other people in other communities to get a job. We must understand the importance of spending money in
the community in which we live.” Malcolm went on to say that, “The neighborhoods in which you spend your money become richer and richer and the neighborhoods in which the money is taken out of becomes poorer and poorer. This creates slums - all the wealth leaves.” Finally, speaking on the topic of economic philosophy of Black nationalism, Malcolm continues by pointing out: “Even when we try to spend money in our own community we don’t. Business is controlled by outsiders who don’t live in the community because we don’t know the importance of owning and operating businesses ourselves. So money leaves the community in a basket at sundown. We must control our own economy.” One important activity African American people should practice during the Kwanzaa season is doing business with each other, thus continuing this practice throughout the year. In next to the final chapter of Dr. Chancellor Williams’ classic book, The Destruction of Black Civilization, he addresses the issue of “Organizing A Race For Action.”
Dr. Williams explains that this organizing for racial action should have as a major component, “The Division of Economic Planning and Development.” He explains that: “The Division of Economic Planning and Development should be the foundation of the organized efforts and a principal source of support and promotion of the most important activities of the whole race. A guiding principle should be that all promoted community enterprises shall be cooperatively owned and controlled by the people of the community and that each enterprise be highly trained management and competent service personnel.” In this connection, Dr. Williams makes this observation: “The second great understanding should be that economic activities are so fundamental in any truly upward movement, so clearly indispensable at this stage in history, that it should be unnecessary to state it even.” If we are ever to become a free and independent people, we must organize the race for action.
What about Kasandra Perkins? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist By now, it’s old news that Kasandra Perkins was murdered by Kansas City Chiefs football player Jovan Belcher, who was her boyfriend and the father of her daughter. By now we’ve read about how great a teammate Belcher was, how dedicated to his girlfriend and daughter. We’ve read his hardscrabble story of moving from the University of Maine, hardly a football powerhouse, to a coveted slot in the NFL. Belcher has been humanized, even enshrined, as his friends have talked about him not having a violent bone in his body. What about Kasandra? It has been disturbing that the news focused mostly on Jovan (yes, I know, he was the famous one), with a focus on Kasandra only later in the week. Her friends said they did not want her life to be overshadowed by the sympathetic coverage of Jovan. While Jovan Belcher was clearly a troubled man, the bottom line is that Jovan Belcher murdered Kasandra Perkins. Not just shot her, he 6
murdered her. And then he killed himself. Yes, this is a tragedy, but it is also a murder, so let’s not use euphemisms, let’s just call it what it is. The news reports that Belcher was angry because Kasandra Perkins went to a concert and came home at
cook dinner, because they raised their voice, because they chose to spend time with friends or family, because, because. This violence does not know race, class or gender, though different groups have different levels of violence. While 1.5 million women experience domestic violence annually, African American women are 35 percent more likely than white women to be battered. Without mentioning names, the Kansas City Chiefs called for a moment of silence for victims of domestic violence during the game that Jovan Belcher did not play. With football as the focus, they did not have the grace to mention Kasandra Perkins by name. It would have made a difference if they had. Despite the fact that Belcher was a member of the KC team, there is a villain and a victim in this incident. This type of violence is such an epidemic that the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed in 1994. The act established an office in the Department of Justice works to prevent violence, and allocated $1.6 billion to work on violence
about one in the morning. But another report says that he was parked
outside some other woman’s house in the middle of the night. Go figure. What do we know about Kasandra Perkins? The 22-year-old woman from Texas aspired to be a teacher and was studying at a local community college. She had a 3month-old child, Zoey. She made friends easily and worked with other wives and girlfriends of Chiefs players. She enjoyed going out with friends. There is probably lots more to her story, but it has been scantily reported. Nobody knows what goes on in a relationship except those who are in it. So it is also disturbing to see Belcher’s friends take to the media to describe the relationship as troubled and to suggest that Kasandra is at fault for her own murder. According to some, she provoked her own murder by staying out late at night. Guess what? Belcher’s mother was caring for their infant. Sounds like a control issue to me. Too often, men beat and even kill women when they step outside their sphere of control. Women are beaten or killed because they didn’t

against women issues, including strengthening existing state laws and raising awareness of this issue. Now the law is up for reauthorization, and some Republicans are holding it up because they do not agree with protections for Native American women, immigrant women, and people in same-sex couples. We know that VAWA is effective. Since its passage, intimate partner violence has dropped by about 60 percent, but it didn’t save Kasandra Perkins. If nothing else, her brutal murder reminds us why this act is so important. Jovan Belcher had a temper, drank heavily, and had at least eight guns. Some say he had suffered multiple head injuries playing football. That’s no excuse for a murder so brutal that he shot Kasandra nine times. And the stories about his supposed nonviolence is contradicted by some of his college behavior, including punching through a window when he was frustrated by a girlfriend who did not want to see him. This man was a serious candidate for anger management! (Continued on page 16) The Chicago Crusader

Letters from Wilmington Ten (Continued from page 3) The number two reason on the “disadvantages” side was, “…could effect Hall’s attitude and other witnesses.” The number seven reason on the “advantages” side was “…to keep out Hall’s letter”…from the trial, apparently one of many Hall had written, that would somehow cast doubt on his witness’s testimony, and confirm that Stroud was putting Hall up to it. When the first Wilmington Ten trial was indeed aborted because Hall feigned “sickness,” and the second trial commenced in Sept. 1972, Hall did testify against the defendants. According to the legal Wilmington Ten pardon petition to NC Governor Beverly Perdue submitted last May by Pardon Project attorney Joyner and lead defense attorney James Ferguson, “Hall’s testimony, which was given during a week of heated and contentious testimony, was the only alleged eyewitness account of criminal conduct by any Wilmington Ten member during the events from February 4th through February 7th [1971]...” The petition continued, “Hall’s testimony was peripherally supported by Jerome Mitchell, a convicted felon and seventeen year old high school dropout, and Eric Junius, a twelve-year-old Junior High School drop-out. As recognized by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals (Dec. 1980 decision): “When the trial record is examined, it is readily apparent that North Carolina’s case
depended entirely on Hall’s credibility.” In that US Fourth Circuit 1980 decision, it was determined that all three state’s witnesses had all been paid in some form or fashion by the prosecutor. The state’s star witness job – convict the Wilmington Ten on the stand. “During Hall’s trial testimony, he was repeatedly and vigorously crossexamined by defense attorneys who confronted Hall with numerous significant contradictions between his trial testimony and statements which he made in prior written statements to the Prosecutor,” the legal petition continued. “When repeatedly asked by defense attorneys to reconcile the discrepancies, Hall testified that he had amended the earlier statements with the State’s Prosecutor. Efforts by defense attorneys to obtain copies of the amended statements were resisted by the Prosecutor and upheld by the Trial Judge.”

“At one point during Hall’s crossexamination,” the legal petition adds, “… he became so enraged at the insistent and grueling questioning by Defense Attorney James Ferguson that he rushed from the witness stand and attempted to physically attack Ferguson in open Court.” The judge didn’t sanction Hall for the violent outburst, however. Instead, the judge chastised defense attorney Ferguson for asking such tough questions. Saturday, December 15, 2012

Eager parents attend school choices Expo By Wendell Hutson Parents and students concerned about next year’s Chicago Public Schools (CPS) closings recently got an opportunity to examine some alternatives during the Sixth Annual New Schools Expo at Soldier Field. With the dozens of charter schools represented at the expo, Joanna DeJesus said any school wouldn’t do for her 13-year-old daughter Jomaris Mercado. “I am looking for schools that offer performing arts. My daughter wants to dance and sing and I don’t think our neighborhood high school (Kelvyn Park) offers performing arts,” DeJesus said. For Mercado, an eight-grader,
wants to attend a school that not only offers performing arts but one that “will challenge me to actually think,” she said. The answer to DeJesus and hundreds of other parents who attended the Expo may be charter schools, whose popularity have soared over the last few years as CPS continually adds more charters to its roster of schools. One difference between charters and traditional public schools is who runs them. Charters, while still under CPS’s umbrella, are operated by non-profit organizations and its teachers are nonunion. Up until this year when a new state law allowed CPS to extend the school day by 90 minutes, most charters were already

At charter schools the school day begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. for all students. Many parents said they attended the Expo to learn more about charters. “I wanted to see how charters are controlled,” said Christopher Preston, who has two daughters that attend a Catholic elementary school on the South Side. “If I cannot find a good charter school for them then my wife and I are prepared to send them to a private high school to ensure that they get the best, possible education. His wife Sarah said she is not sure their local, public high school (Harlan Academy) could properly prepare them for college.
“They do too much shooting up there [Harlan High School] for me,” added Sarah. Gloria Turner and her 14-yearold daughter Raquel attended the expo along with Gloria’s 13-yearold niece Ronisha Mosley. Both Raquel and Ronisha said they heard that charter schools were strict. “I hear they [charter schools] be on you about your clothes, how your hair looks and what type of makeup you can wear,” Raquel said. “I don’t know if I am ready for all that.” Gloria said that type of treatment at a school is fine with her. “Kids need more supervision when it comes to how they dress especially these young ladies who think it is okay to wear anything to school,” added Gloria.
But the Chicago Teachers Union said parents should read between the lines when considering a charter school for their children. We believe parents should be armed with all of the information when deciding on where to send their child to school,” said Stephanie Gadlin, a spokeswoman for the CTU. “Do the schools offer music, art, physical education, technology and world languages? What programs are available for struggling students? What is the school’s overall test scores (in reading, math and science) compared to the same scores of students attending the local neighborhood school?” Phyllis Lockett, chief executive officer for New Schools Chicago, (Continued on page 16)
Third grade student launches toy drive for victims So touched by the ravages of Hurricane Sandy, Samuel E. Love, 9, a third grade student at Beasley Elementary School, 5255 S. State St. is holding a Christmas party Saturday, December 15, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at his father’s restaurant, Josephine’s Cooking (aka Captain Hardtimes), 436 E. 79th St., where Love is asking the public to bring toys for the children in New York. After watching news reports showing the devastation Hurricane Sandy has caused, Love sent a note to his principal, Dr. Kim Brasfield, asking for her support in his holding a toy drive for the children who are facing a bleak Christmas. “Since I get so much for Christmas, I think these children should get some toys, too,” said Love. “When a child places socially re-
sponsibility on his or her shoulders to care for others in the world, it is inspiring,” said Brasfield. School officials agreed to support his toy drive if he would cover the cost of mailing the toys to New York. “I agreed to do that,” said Love, who is the grandson of Josephine Wade, who along with her son, Victor Love, Samuel’s father, owns the Josephine Cooking (aka Captain Hardtimes) Restaurant, 436 E. 79th St. in Chicago. Samuel’s father, Victor Love, said, “I am so proud of my son, and I am hoping that the public will support this very worthy cause.” Admission to Samuel Love’s toy drive is free with a toy or $10.00 if you have no toy. For further information, call: Victor Love, Samuel’s father, at: 774-908-7431.
THIRD GRADE STUDENT Sam Love knows he will have a Christmas loaded with gifts. He decided he wanted to help less fortunate children-especially those affected by Hurricane Sandy, so he organized a toy-raising event. He enlisted the support of his grandmother Josephine Wade, who will hold the event at her restaurant (Josephine’s Cooking).

The NEW Four-One-One By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor MUSICAL GOLD: Six of the year’s most interesting musicians each received six nominations for music’s highest honor during last week’s announcements of the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. Chicago’s own Kanye West, the Black Keys, fun., Mumford & Sons, Jay-Z and Frank Ocean (who was nominated for three of the four major awards) each snared six nominations for their diverse brands of music. Ocean is probably the most surprising because he sent waves of shock and surprise throughout the music community when he announced that some of the songs on his album, “Channel Orange,” were inspired by his love affair with another man. But his talents proved sexual preference does not matter and the album has been hailed as a classic by some critics and has sold more than 300,000 copies. In addition, Chicago is well represented with nominations for: Shemekia Copeland for “Best Blues Album,” R. Celebrity Trials in the Media Celebrity Trials in the Media analyzes famous trials of the last few decades, or at least trials that were made famous by the media frenzy surrounding them. One case covered is the Kobe Bryant sexual assault trial, which ended after 14 months with no trial at all—the trial was dismissed because the woman involved decided she didn’t want to go forward. The little unknown town of Eagle, Colorado was trampled upon by more than 400 media outlets who camped out looking for stories, even on days where there was no story to report. But one reporter—who was charged with reporting something—made even the news that the judge didn’t rule on anything on a particular day seem like news. The documentary suggests that fans and the public push media outlets to go bananas around a particular trial, although if the accused were just the “regular joes,” then there would be no real interest. During the same time as the Bryant trial in Colorado, the documentary details the Michael Jackson child molestation trial in California. In both trials, the photographers were charged with getting a photo of something, even if it meant just 15 minutes of videos of the celebrity going in and out of the court building. One reporter suggests that Jackson walked a certain way when the cameras weren’t on him, but when he caught the cameras trained on him, he would seem to need assistance walking. How many ways can you say that the defendant wore pajamas to court, or a nice brown suit? It was suggested that maybe Bryant helped his female attorney out of the SUV every day, because he had been told to do so. It’s a common curiosity; the public wants to know all they can about someone else’s business, and what better way than to while away the hours consumed by bad news that doesn’t remotely affect you? But some reporters offered that maybe it’s not right to report on sexual abuse cases, because of the subject matter, and they candidly share the challenges and ethical dilemmas that arise when the camera lights go on and the deadline to deliver a compelling news story, nearly 24 hours/7 days a week, arrives.

The DePaul Art Museum will explore the impact of humans on the environment with “Climate of Uncertainty,” an interactive exhibition that opens Jan. 10 and runs through March 24. The museum is free and open to the public every day. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at the museum, located at 935 W. Fullerton Ave., just east of the CTA’s Fullerton ‘L’ stop. “Climate of Uncertainty” features 12 artists engaged in longterm projects that address humans’ role in environmental degradation, said Laura Fatemi, assistant director of the DePaul Art Museum who organized the exhibition. Seven photographers document issues ranging from the destructive effects of extractive industry to the effect of careless waste disposal on animal populations. of large-scale damming. Other media included in the exhibition are sculpture, printmaking and mixed media. Works in the exhibition reveal ways that individuals, industries and governments have exploited, abused or depleted natural resources and explore alternative approaches to environmental issues by challenging the viewer to imagine a more hopeful future. “One of the greatest challenges that society will likely face in the coming decades and century is how to strategically plan for and adapt to the uncertain effects of climate change,” Fatemi said. “It’s unusual for an art museum to take on a subject that is so technical, but the premise of this exhibition is that artists—whose tools for communicating are visual, emotional, visceral and intuitive—can help build a public movement and engage audiences using a fresh vocabulary.” In conjunction with the exhibition, a number of programs fea(Continued on page 16) 13
WORLD OF MUSIC Soprano Gloria Davy, dead at 81 By Barbara Wright-Pryor
Gloria Davy, the first Black American to sing the role of Aida with the Metropolitan Opera, died November 28 in Geneva, Switzerland at the age of 81. Her parents immigrated to the United States from St. Vincent, in the Windward Islands. Ms. Davy was born in Brooklyn, New York, March 29, 1931. She graduated from the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan and in 1951 and 1952 received the Marian Anderson Award, a prize for young singers that was established in 1943 by Ms. Anderson, the first Black singer to appear at the Met.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1953 from the Juilliard School where she studied with Belle Julie Soudent, Ms. Davy embarked on a career as a concert singer. In January 1954, as a prize for having won a vocal competition sponsored by the Music Education League, Ms. Davy appeared at Town Hall with the Little Orchestra Society, singing Britten’s song cycle “Les Illuminations,” a rigorous undertaking for even a seasoned singer. In May, 1954, Ms. Davy replaced Leontyne Price as Bess in an international tour of “Porgy

and Bess,” providing her with her first significant stage experience. She was well-known as an interpreter of 20th-century music, including the work of Richard Strauss, Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith. Ms. Davy sang with the Met for four seasons. She made her debut in the title role of Verdi’s “Aida,” opposite Leonard Warren, in 1958. Her final performance was as Leonora in Verdi’s “Trovatore,” opposite Giulio Gari, in 1961. She also sang Pamina in Mozart’s “Magic Flute” and Nedda in Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci” with the company. In concert, she appeared with the New York Philharmonic and at Carnegie Hall and Town Hall in New York. When the tour reached Milan,
the conductor Victor de Sabata suggested Ms. Davy learn the role of Aida for a forthcoming production at La Scala. Though she was unable to sing it there — political turbulence in Italy caused the performance to be canceled — she made her debut in the role in Nice, France, in 1957 and performed mainly in Europe from the 1960s onward. ‘HANSEL UND GRETEL,’ Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera (libretto by his sister, Adelheid Wette) not-as-gruesome a tale as that written by the Grimm Brothers, opened December 7 at Lyric Opera of Chicago, much to the delight of the many children, the young-at-heart and the “not-so-youngs” in the audience. Hansel (mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong at left) and Gretel (soprano Maria Kanyova at right) surround the oven now containing the absolutely delightful/non-frightful food-throwing witch (mezzo-contralto Jill Grove) in the two-and-one-half hour production filled with imaginative choreography, superb character portrayal, stellar singing and orchestral brilliance led by guest conductor Ward Stare (Lyric debut). West Side Pastor, Rev. Dr. Lewis Flowers, dies Rev. Dr. Lewis Flowers, 62, former president of the Westside Ministers Coalition and chairman of the board, died recently at his home having recently been released from a hospital, Rev. Phalese Binion, president of the Westside Ministers Coalition, confirmed Sunday morning. A Vietnam veteran, Flowers was pronounced dead at 2:50 a.m. at the West Suburban Hospital, according to his daughter, Blaire Flowers. Dr. Flowers had been in several hospitals prior to his death last night, Dr. Binion said. The powerful Dr. Flowers, who
served for more than three decades as the president of that coalition, was known for his battles on social justice on the West Side of Chicago particularly in the Austin community where, as a spokesman for the Community Reinvestment Organizing Project (COP), demanded that Mayor Rahm Emanuel include Austin, which reportedly led in the number of foreclosures in the mayor’s $15 million Foreclosure Recovery Program.
“The State of Illinois has lost a true icon,” said Binion. “I just thank God he will now be able to rest but those of us who must go on and fill his shoes and pick up and carry on the work he has so tirelessly and restlessly fought for must go on. We have our work cut out for us, but we know we won’t let him down. We won’t let the people down and most of all we will not let God down. We will do it in a state of excellence and in Dr. Lewis’ memory,” Rev.
Binion told this reporter. Dr. Flowers leaves to mourn his wife, Cynthia, three sons, Durand, Duwane and Elijah, two daughters, Lanita Joyner and Blaire Flowers, three brothers, Victor, Cornelius and Dennis, three sisters, Lorinda, Jocelyn and Aretha, nine grandchildren and one grand-child. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Protect your Baby: Prepping for Houseguests By Sergio Golombek, MD, MPH, FAAP, Neonatologist, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center; and Professor of Pediatrics and Clinical Public Health, New York Medical College To no surprise, your family and friends will be anxious to visit and meet your new bundle of joy. And while it is exciting to introduce your baby to your loved ones, it is important that you take the necessary preventive measures to safeguard your infant from unwanted germs that can put your child at risk for serious illness. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus
that is the leading cause of hospitalization for babies during the first year of life. RSV is easily spread and causes 1 out of 13 pediatrician visits and 1 out of 38 ER trips in children under the age of five. To prevent your baby from contracting RSV, below are three key points to take into consideration when prepping for houseguests. • Know the In’s and Out’s. Before the arrival of your guests, you want to ensure you know all the details of their visit. How many people are coming over? Are there any children? Do any of the guests have a cold or has anyone been sick recently? Although some of these questions feel a bit intrusive

This is the DePaul Art Museum’s second year in its new home. The museum is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 773-3257506 or visit http://museums.depaul.edu.
to ask, exposing your baby to a single cough or sniffle may lead to the spread of germs and illnesses like RSV. Also, ensuring the infant is not exposed to large crowds can help protect them from RSV. • Limit visits by younger children. Children who are attending daycare, preschool or are school-aged can potentially expose the infant to RSV. RSV can be contracted not only through coughing and sneezing, but touching as well. If the baby has any younger siblings, make sure you encourage them to “play nice” with the baby and limit excessive touching, but avoid scolding them if they do so. • Ask guests to wash their hands before touching your baby. Hand washing is one of the easiest ways to protect your baby from contracting RSV. It is an effective measure to prevent the spread of many infections and illnesses. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Although RSV is extremely common, many parents are unaware of the dangers that
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) McCarthy doesn’t seem to get that Newark, N.J. ways don’t cut it in Chicago. The pair showed us how far off base they are with the latest idea of beefing up police presence at gang funerals. This is as about as boneheaded as one can get. The mayor and the top cop want to put as many as 10 patrol cars at whatever facility is conducting a funeral of a gang member. There seems to be a big problem with gang members going to burials at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Roseland. The reality is that when those cops are at funerals they can’t be in another part of the city that needs attention. So, the crime in that area jumps off the chain cause the police are sitting at the cemetery. This knee-jerk reaction to a shooting at St. Columbanus Church in Chatham belies McCarthy’s assertion 16
that he knows what he is doing. The new strategy of cops at gangbangers’ funerals is just another of the many so-called ideas he has thrown against the wall to see if it sticks and brings some good results. It won’t because it is flawed from the outset. Gang bangers have shown they have little to no respect for cops. And cops don’t understand how to deal with people who perpetually operate outside of the law. Right now the best move for Emanuel is to get rid of McCarthy – send him back to New Jersey or wherever he wants to go. McCarthy belongs back in the minor leagues where he was effective. But Chicago is the big leagues and the police superintendent just doesn’t know how to go about playing at this level. The former Mayor Richard M. Daley started
this downhill slide when he brought in Jody Weis to run the department. Weis got rid of the department’s institutional memory by forcing so many long-time cops into retirement. The pickings of long timers was even smaller by the time McCarthy arrived. Nor has he relied enough on those who were here before his arrival. McCarthy probably believes that the general public believes him when he holds a news conference stating crime is down. He also probably believes that much of the general public believes the cops tweak the numbers when reporting criminal activity. The community has no confidence in the current police department leadership. As long as that is the case, there is no hope of crime going down.
