Former cop seeks justice for slain son By Wendell Hutson A grieving father looking for answers said he intends to file suit against the Chicago police for the death of his son Philip Coleman. Percy Coleman, a former police chief for south suburban Robbins and Ford Heights, made his intentions known at a Tuesday news conference at New Creation Binding and Loosing Ministries, 12900 S. Halsted St., which is led by Rev. Jolinda Wade, mother of Miami Heat basketball star Dwyane Wade. “I will not stop until I get justice for my son. I am in the process of getting into this legally,” explained Percy Coleman. “Philip was not an animal or a criminal, but a human being who was having a mental breakdown.” The retired law enforcement officer added that he has not eaten or slept since his son’s death on Dec. 13, when he went into cardiac arrest after being tasered three times by police, Percy said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has yet to release autopsy results. According to Percy, on the day of his son’s arrest he subdued him to keep police, who had their guns pointed at Philip, from shooting him. “I told them (Chicago police) that my son was having an emotional breakdown

and could they please take him to the hospital,” recalled Percy. “And that’s when one of the officers said ‘we do not do hospitals, we do jail.’ Unbelievable.” Philip, 38, was the youngest of three siblings and died while in police custody after police said he “became combative” as they escorted him to court from the Calumet

District police station on the South Side. Melissa Stratton, a spokeswoman for Chicago police, said the “matter is under investigation by IPRA (Independent Police Review Authority).” The Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder of the civil rights organization Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, also attended the news confer-

ence and said he does not trust an investigation by IPRA. “A special prosecutor should be appointed to this case just like the case involving Mayor Daley’s nephew (Richard Vanecko),” asserted Jackson. “Philip was a board member of Rainbow/PUSH and (Continued on page 2)

Surviving woman donates kidney to ailing kin By J. Coyden Palmer Two years ago, Yolanda Collins survived her own brush with death when her suburban Park Forest home exploded unexpectedly, while she was in an upstairs bedroom. Everything in the home was destroyed, but Collins walked away with only bumps and bruises. Collins was rescued by two AT&T workers who happened to be in the area and used a ladder to climb into her bedroom window and pluck her from the approaching flames. Now Collins is playing the role of hero after flying to San Francis-

co this week to donate one of her kidneys to her 24 year-old nephew, Wardell Jefferson-Collins, who is suffering from End Stage Renal Disease. Collins, who comes from a large family and has 10 siblings, said she did not hesitate to offer one of her kidneys after Jefferson-Collins’ brother and an uncle were unable to donate. She said she does not regret the decision and feels as though perhaps the reason God spared her life from her own tragedy was so she could assist others. “My sister said I was kept alive for this purpose,” Collins said. “I don’t know what to expect. I’m a bit concerned about going under the anesthesia, but other than that I’m fine with everything.” Jefferson-Collins began having problems a few years ago when he was a basketball coach. New MWRD Board has first official meeting The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) has a 123 year history steeped in tradition, and another chapter has begun as a new Board of Commissioners was installed last week and held its first official meeting. MWRD Vice President Barbara McGowan, who has served on the Board since 1998, is now the Acting President since Terrence J. O’Brien retired in late November. President McGowan will be filling in until a replacement is selected at the first Board meeting in January. “It is an honor and privilege to lead this important body during this transitional phase until the election of the new president in January,” said President McGowan. “The former President left big shoes to fill, and I am happy to step in.” New Commissioners Kari K. Steele and Patrick D. Thompson joined returning Commissioner Debra Shore and the six other members at the Dec. 6 regular meeting. Commissioners are elected at large and serve six year terms. The team of nine will elect the President, Vice President and Chairman of Finance.

Commissioner Shore looks forward to continuing the work in which she has engaged in the past six years. “This agency has a vital role to play in protecting our water resources, and I am so privileged to play a part in it,” said Commissioner Shore. “My admiration and respect for my new and current colleagues continues to grow.” Commissioner Steele worked for the MWRD earlier in her career and said that she was excited about starting her new post. “I am happy to be joining a dynamic organization that is at the forefront of environmental stewardship in the Chicago region,” Commissioner Steele said. “I look forward to working with my fellow Board members and the MWRD staff to ensure the continuity of stormwater and wastewater management services to all of our communities.” Commissioner Thompson recognizes that the Board will have numerous decisions to make as the agency forges its path into the future. “There are many pressing issues at hand in regards to the water environment,” Commissioner Thompson said. “I’m glad to have joined the Board at this pivotal time. He hugged and kissed me and started talking fast. I could hardly understand him,” Percy said. “That’s when he fell to his knees and said, ‘anybody who hits their mom deserves to die.’ He then told me to shoot him. I knew then something was wrong.” At the time Percy was unaware that Philip had attacked his wife, who called the police for assistance. Philip was bleeding from his mouth, Percy explained, “so he was spitting to clear his throat so he could breathe.” Chicago police said Philip had spit on officers but Percy said he told police his son was not trying to spit on them. “Do you know that when the ambulance arrived they took the police officers who said he had spit on them before they took my wife,” Percy said. “They got to

Jeffrey Coleman, Philip’s older brother, said his brother had graduated from Morgan Park High School, University of Chicago and earned a master’s degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago. “Man, I miss him (Philip),” Jeffrey said. “I loved my brother and now I will never see him again.” The Chicago Crusader

Those seeking to replace Jackson make their case By J. Coyden Palmer Over a dozen announced candidates for the 2nd Congressional seat vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr. last month told a group of Democratic leaders on Saturday why they should be the party’s candidate. The slating, held at South Suburban College in South Holland, brought out up and coming politicians, veteran lawmakers and those just trying to make a name for themselves. The all-day event had several lighthearted moments, in addition to serious questions being asked by party leaders of potential candidates. Each of the 15 people slated to talk had 15 minutes to impress party bosses. Absent from the event was Cong. Mel Reynolds, who has indicated that he will run as an independent and Sandi Jackson, wife of the former congressman, who up until last week was being rumored as running for her husband’s old seat. Those the committee members liked at times were brought into a separate, private room for more questions. But the committee also offered very harsh words for some of those like state Senator elect Napoleon Harris and former state Rep. David Miller. Harris, who just elected on Nov. 6 and has never served in public office, said he is running because people in his community are telling him he should run. “My heart is for the people,” Harris said. “I will still be serving people of the 15th district. I believe I can

serve them on a federal level as well.” But Chicago Ald. Leslie Hairston did not believe what Harris was saying and said Harris needs to stick to doing things at a job he has not even started yet. Hairston seemed particularily bugged that Harris felt he should be able to jump to the front of the line when there are other lawmakers that have put in their time and perhaps may deserve the opportunity. “You haven’t even been sworn in yet and you’re running for another seat?” asked Hairston with a sense of indignation. Former Rep. David Miller’s presentation turned off some members of the committee. Miller a local dentist, at times was screaming into the microphone which had to be turned down. Miller said healthcare is a right and that he would fight if elected to bring it to all members of the district. But his vocal volume and oratory skills were more suited for a sermon and committee member Ald. Carrie Austin told him so. “Perhaps you should drop the congressional campaign and go to ministry school,” said Austin drawing laughter from the crowd, but not from Miller. Rev. Anthony Williams, who ran as an independent and lost in November, was back again. This time he was wearing a black armband to symbolize those who have lost their lives or been a victim of violence. Williams said if elected he will seek

Jefferson-Collins is on dialysis 10 hours a day every day. His medical bills have soared but he said the challenge has made him see life differently. “If this could happen to me this could happen to anyone,” he said. “But what I’ve seen is the goodness of humanity. There were more than a dozen people who were willing to donate a kidney to me. Not just family, but co-workers and a lot of others. That means I was living life the right way.” His mother, Denise Collins, said seeing her son go through this medical crisis is the most difficult thing she has had to endure. She said her son was always an energetic person, but after his illness she could see how his personality changed a bit. “It’s hard when you see your child sick and knowing there is nothing you can do about it to make it betSaturday, December 22, 2012

I’m hoping the surgery will go well so he can get his life back and live the way he wants.” One of the goals Jefferson-Collins has made for himself is to return to playing basketball. He said the sport has always been a release for his energy and the thing he enjoys most in life. He finds inspiration in retired NBA players Sean Elliott and Alonzo Mourning, both of whom underwent kidney transplants during their playing careers and returned to the court. Jefferson-Collins and his family said by going public with their challenge they hope to inspire other African-Americans to become organ donors. EDITORIAL A SORROWFUL CHRISTMAS FOR 26 FAMILIES It has happened again; a “loner” apparently fascinated by firearms breaks into a school in Sandy Hook, CT and guns down 26 people, most of them children! This is the second deadliest shooting in U.S. History. And to add insult to injury, all of the victims were shot multiple times! Moreover, this occurred during one of the most festive times of the year; the Christmas season! Amidst the grieving, important questions are circulating. What was the motive? What goes on in the mind of someone who would kill innocent children? As a result, new light is being shed on the notion of treatment for mental health because surely, someone who would do something this terrible must definitely be mentally ill. The shootings were allegedly carried out by 24-year-old Adam Lanza, who killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, and then proceeded on to the school where he killed administrators and children. All of the children were ages 6 or 7. Interestingly, the school had recently beefed up their security measures, but Lanza was able to gain access in order to do his dirty deeds. There have been other mass shootings in the United States; Virginia Tech and Columbine were among the worst cases. All of these shootings were by disturbed “loners.” Predictably, the call for gun control has ramped up because of these circumstances. If all guns were taken off of the streets, does that mean that heinous crimes would not take place? Surprisingly, on the same day as the Sandy Hook shootings, 22 children in China were stabbed by an assailant! This is an astounding coincidence, and in this case the weapon of choice was a knife, not a gun. The message here is that if someone is bound to commit mayhem, he or she will use whatever is at his or her disposal to wreak havoc. With that said, why would anyone possess assault weapons? They are clearly designed to kill people; that would be the only reason to have them, since most of these people are not hunters. Surprisingly, Adam Lanza was taught to use guns by his mother, who took her children to a shooting range on a regular basis. She owned a number of guns, some which were allegedly used by Adam during his rampage. Why was she so fascinated with guns? What was she preparing for? In recent years, especially since President Barack Obama’s election to office, it has been said that the purchase of guns has ramped up. Some see this as preparation for an inevitable(?) revolution in America. Whether or not this is the case, more attention should be given to those who purchase and hoard assault weapons. The Christmas season is one where the focus is on love and giving. That’s why it is so unbelievably sad that Adam Lanza chose this time of year to snuff out the lives of 26 people whose families, no doubt, will have a very somber Christmas holiday. With this said, the following are the names and ages of the victims in the Sandy Hook massacre: Charlotte Bacon, 6; Daniel Barden, 7; Rachel Davino, 29; Olivia Engel, 6; Josephine Gay, 7; Ana Marquez-Greene, 6; Dylan Hockley, 6; Dawn Hochsprung, 47; Madeleine Hsu, 6; Catherine Hubbard, 6; Chase Kowalski, 7; Jesse Lewis, 6; James Mattioli, 6; Grace McDonnell, 7; Anne Marie Murphy, 52; Emilie Parker, 6; Jack Pinto, 6; Noah Pozner, 6; Caroline Previdi, 6; Jessica Rekos, 6; Avielle Richman, 6; Lauren Rousseau, 30; Mary Sherlach, 56; Victoria Soto, 27; Benjamin Wheeler, 6; Allison Wyatt, 6. Our condolences go out to their families, and may the victims Rest In Peace.

It truly did my heart good last week to see a bunch of Black preachers taking up for La Shawn Ford. I know Ford was the cause of the day, but those preachers sort of stuck their necks out based on the fact Ford has been indicted for bank fraud-some pretty heady stuff. Ford really gives us all a lesson in how to live your life. Many others would get indicted and walk around with $50 bills taped to their clothes and nobody would come near them. Ford had supporters from nearly every walk of life coming to have his back as soon as they heard news of the indictment. That says they believe more in Ford than the Feds. He has been super helpful in his district with the regular online postings of job openings, the fact he built a business in the district, and that he doesn’t take the legislative job for granted and actually shows up nearly all of the time. He also has put in the time in that district – even before he got elected to anything. So many are willing to back Ford because his career has been non-controversial, actually boring from what I know of him. We have a Catholic school grad who coached and taught at CPS schools being charged with an outlandish plot and crime. This is not the Ford we know– the guy

who got elected and went to the ethics office to find out how to stay on the straight-and-narrow. I know there is always the possibility that Ford has a sneaky, nefarious side he is able to hide-possible but highly unlikely. He could be considered a Boy Scout among politicians. The simple reality is there is no city that accurately compares to Chicago in terms of our population, ethnic makeup, and segregation. The argument that if thugs know their next potential victim might “be packing,” then they will be less-inclined to attack that person. It is logical but questionable at best. The reality is those thugs will probably prey on the unsuspecting elderly victims. On the other side of that argu(Continued on page 16)

I believe the state legislators are trying to get their act together now and re-write the conceal carry law since an appellate court ruled the existing one void. I also am willing to bet that from the time you read this until the new law goes into effect this summer, the debate about the benefits and liabilities of the law won’t cool down. This is one of those subjects in my opinion where the best things are opinions, no right or wrong. When the researchers talk about how conceal carry gun laws have

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

“Lincoln” – A Great Piece of History! By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist My family went to the movies to see the much advertised and critically acclaimed new film by Steven Spielberg entitled “Lincoln.” The plot centered on one particular phase of the President’s legacy. That was the abolition of slavery and how he got it done. All of us were taught the Emancipation Proclamation was the vehicle that abolished slavery in America. That just is not true and Spielberg brilliantly showed us the real story. That’s right it was not the Emancipation Proclamation. Wikipedia: “The Emancipation Proclamation is a military order issued to the Army and Navy of the United States by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War. It was based on the president’s constitutional authority as commander in chief of the armed forces; it was not a law passed by Congress. It proclaimed all slaves in Confederate territory to be forever free; that is, it ordered the Army to treat as free men the slaves in ten states that were still in rebellion, thus applying to 3.1 million of the 4 million slaves in the U.S.”

Harry C. Alford Lincoln knew that this was flimsy and would probably fall apart at the end of the war. The Confederacy certainly would use this as a condition of surrender (to keep slavery) and the American people were so weary of the war which terribly affected every household with death and misery. This was simply an Executive Order implemented under the War Powers Act. It didn’t even apply to non-Confederate states and

the Confederate states paid no attention to it at all. What he needed was an amendment to the Constitution. Thus, he had his Republican Party sponsor the bill which would become the Thirteenth Amendment. This amendment would outlaw slavery within the United States forever. Even though the abolition of slavery was part of the main platform of the new Republican Party it wasn’t going to be easy at all. An amendment to the Constitution must have two-thirds of the House votes to pass and go onto the President’s desk. The Republicans had a majority but were not even close to a two thirds majority. In addition, the Democratic Party was very much against the thought of slavery abolition. They certainly were going to dig in and try to defeat the amendment. The GOP needed 22 Democratic votes to pass the bill and so the plot thickens. Time was “ticking” as the amendment needed to be passed before the end of the war. Congress would be in no mood to stir up things again with a new initiative against slavery. Lincoln and various GOP House leaders had to come up with a political scheme to rid America of slavery. Spielberg did

more than clearly show how ugly politics can be. Lincoln, the Congressmen, Cabinet officials, General Grant, lobbyists, press, etc. were all involved in this ebb and flow struggle. Patronage jobs, earmarks, bribery, etc. were some of the “ammunition” that was used in the persuasion of certain Democrats. “Honest Abe” was not totally honest in this struggle to make his dream a reality – the abolition of slavery. But he got the job done. Most interesting was the role of a Black female who appeared with First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln just about all the time. When I returned home I researched this. This sister was not a slave or employee like a domestic. She was actually a very good friend of the First Lady and an entrepreneur and fashion designer. In fact, Elizabeth Keckley bought her own and her son’s freedom in St. Louis and moved to Washington, DC. Her dresses were in high demand among the ladies of the Washington elite. Being a confidant of the First Lady made her well respected. Later, she would own boarding houses in Philadelphia and DC. She actually owned one across the street from the Willard Hotel and two

blocks from the White House. She was also a philanthropist for Wilberforce University. Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee was Thaddeus Stevens. He was a pure abolitionist and played his part in the victory. It was apparent that he had a relationship with a sister. I researched her and found Lydia Hamilton Smith, a widow and supposedly the housekeeper for the Congressman. Actually, it was well known that she was his common law wife for over 20 years. She ran his business affairs when he was in session. When Stevens died he left her $5,000 which was a handsome sum back then. She bought his home and office and invested the rest in other things and became a prosperous entrepreneur in her own right. Spielberg also noted that Blacks were on the battlefield in great numbers (unlike his denial in Band of Brothers movie). In fact, over 200,000 Blacks served admirably. Go see this movie! You are going to love it. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

One Week, Two Sides of Obama By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Over the span of one week, two different sides of President Obama emerged in different yet unforgettable terms. This first was political, involving Susan Rice’s decision to withdraw her name as a candidate for Secretary of State. The second was deeply personal in the wake of mass murders in a Newtown, Conn. elementary school. In a column explaining her decision to withdraw her name, Rice said: “ …As it became clear that my potential nomination would spark an enduring partisan battle, I concluded that it would be wrong to allow this debate to continue distracting from urgent national priorities — creating jobs, growing our economy, addressing our deficit, reforming our immigration system and protecting our national security.” That was the public perception: A loyal UN Ambassador declining to fight for a promotion so that an embattled president could avoid a showdown with Republican hypocrites in the Senate. Just as Rice withdrew her name to give Obama a way out, I believe that if the president had insisted, Rice would have kept her The Chicago Crusader

name in the ring and ultimately would have been confirmed by the Senate to succeed Hillary Clinton as the next Secretary of State. But evidently Obama would rather switch than fight, to paraphrase an old cigarette commercial. According to the Washington Post, “When asked if Obama had tried to dissuade her, [Rice] said that he ‘understood that this was the right decision, and that I made it for the right reasons.’” In his statement accepting Rice’s decision, Obama said, “While I deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first…” Obama didn’t demonstrate any strength of character when he abandoned Rice. And this is one of the troubling things about Obama: He frequently caves in to Republican extremists, even when he has public opinion on his side. When Obama first defended Rice, we all thought he had finally discovered some political backbone. He said at a news conference, “If Senator McCain and Senator Graham and others want to go after somebody they should go after me. For them to go after the UN am-

George E. Curry bassador who had nothing to do with Benghazi…to besmirch her reputation is outrageous.” Game on. Or so we thought. Had Obama chosen to fight, it would have set the tone for his second term. Instead, he retreated behind the comfort and safety of Susan Rice’s loyalty rather than standing up to conservative bullies. Republicans not only have Rice as a political trophy, but if Senator John Kerry is the eventual nominee as expected, they will get a chance to replace him with Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts. This is not the first case of political timidity by Democrats. Republi-

cans nominate – and fight for – for extreme ideologues to serve on the Supreme Court. Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and John Roberts are but three examples. But weakkneed Democrats are afraid to fight for liberal justices and instead settle for centrist nominees who will be “accepted” by Republicans. The end result is a more conservative Supreme Court because Republicans nominate far-right conservatives and Democrats don’t have the guts to offer a liberal counter-balance. This was true of both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. While President Obama refused to fight for a Susan Rice nomination to be Secretary of State, he demonstrated in Newtown, Conn. that he is at his best when serving as Comforter-in-Chief to a bereaved nation. The president visited the city two days after the massacre of 20 young children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. According to authorities, Adam P. Lanza, a 20-year-old gunman, inflicted the carnage before killing himself. “I can only hope it helps for you to know that you’re not alone in your grief; that our world too has been torn apart; that all across this land of ours, we have wept with you, we’ve pulled our children tight,” President Obama said. “And you must know that whatever meaSaturday, December 22, 2012

sure of comfort we can provide, we will provide; whatever portion of sadness that we can share with you to ease this heavy load, we will gladly bear it.” Obama noted that he has attended similar services in three other cities. “Since I’ve been president, this is the fourth time we have come together to comfort a grieving community torn apart by a mass shooting. The fourth time we’ve hugged survivors. The fourth time we’ve consoled the families of victims,” he said. “And in between, there have been an endless series of deadly shootings across the country, almost daily reports of victims, many of them children, in small towns and big cities all across America – victims whose – much of the time, their only fault was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.” George E. Dr. Conrad Worrill

In the wake of the rising African Centered Movement in America, it is important that every segment of the African Community in

America begin preparing for the Kwanzaa Season. It is estimated that more than 30 million Africans in America participate in some sort of Kwanzaa activity or event. In order for this occurrence to continue, parents, teachers, principles, ministers, business people, and community activists must begin preparation immediately. The first question, that obviously should be asked in preparation for the 2012 Kwanzaa Season is: “What is Kwanzaa and why is it so important for African people in America to celebrate?” In 1966, the Black Power explosion shook up America. The call for Black Power was a major shift away from the Civil Rights Movement, during that era. A movement that had successfully dismantled the system of racial segregation (by law) in the southern region of the United States. However, among the masses of Black people in America, there was a deeper meaning to the idea of freedom, justice and equality that had not been advocated by the Civil Rights Movement. The call for Black Power by Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Kwame Ture (a.k.a. Stokely Carmichael),

and others, gave a new impetus for the Black Liberation Movement in America. When the smoke cleared from the Watts Rebellion in 1965, an organization emerged in the Los Angeles, California area, called US. Its leader was Dr. Maulana Karenga. After intense study of African cultural traditions, Dr. Karenga and the US Organization established the only nationally celebrated, indigenous, non-heroic Black Holiday in the United States and they called it Kwanzaa. The concept of Kwanzaa was established for Africans in America and was derived from the African custom of celebrating the harvest season. In Dr. Karenga’s own words he says, “The origin of Kwanzaa on the African continent are in the agricultural celebrations called the ‘first fruits’ celebrations and to a lesser degree the full or general harvest celebration. It is from these first fruit celebrations that Kwanzaa gets its name which comes from the Swahili phrase Matunda Ya Kwanza.” Further, “...Matunda means fruits and ya Kwanza means first. (The extra “a” at the end of Kwanzaa has become convention

as a result of a particular history).” Kwanzaa is officially celebrated December 26th to January 1st and each day a value of the Nguzo Saba (seven principles of blackness) is celebrated. The Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) are: Umoja~ Unity To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race. Kujichagulia ~ Self Determination To define ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves, instead of being defined, named, created for, and spoken for by others. Ujima ~ Collective Work and Responsibility To build and maintain our community together, to make our sisters and brothers’ problems our problems, and to solve them together. Ujamaa ~ Cooperative Economics To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together. Nia ~ Purpose To make as our collective voca-

tion the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. Kuumba ~ Creativity To do always as much as we can, in the way we can in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than when we inherited it. Imani ~ Faith To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle. With the assistance of current Malcolm X President Anthony E. Munroe, the Kwanzaa Celebration Committee, over the past several years, has sponsored Kwanzaa Celebrations and activities during the seven day observance. These celebrations have drawn thousands of people and added to the growing Kwanzaa Movement in the Chicago area. Kwanzaa is a step in helping African people in America fulfill the need and desire to be a united people, with a common set of experiences that lead us toward a common set of goals and objectives for freedom, independence and liberation.

Where Is Your Passion? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist I was in a cab just the other day when the driver chided me for not knowing football. He was a big Redskins (I call them the Deadskins because they need to change their name) fan, and was obsessed with RGIII. I must confess that I did not know who RGIII was until he informed me and told me that I was culturally deficient because I lived in Washington, DC and did not follow football. I observed his passion as I would poke and probe at a sociological phenomenon. The brother was intense, focused, and annoyed at the fact that somebody, anybody, was not caught up in the football drama. At some point I became silent, to see how long the rant would last. And it lasted through the whole twenty minutes of my ride, through stalled traffic and long lights. The man was on a mission. I understand that folks have to have valves to release the tension 6

of everyday life. Maybe it’s sports, reading, or music. Still, I wonder if we could ever garner these passions for our children, for their needs, for ways that education

fy. Nearly $200 billion of Black wealth has been compromised by foreclosures, yet too many are silent about promises unfulfilled. Shootings in Oregon and Connecticut are heartbreaking manifestations of the violence that pervades in our nation. Anybody with an attitude and a gun can shoot into a crowd and cause major damage. Why have a couple of fools targeted an elementary school in Connecticut leaving dozens dead? Why does the National Rifle Association work so hard to maintain the right to bear arms? Why aren’t more legislators working to limit this so-called right? Why do we continue to leave our population vulnerable to nuts with guns? I’d love to see some passion channeled to this issue? Why are we okay with these massacres? I’m not so angry as the football (baseball, basketball) aficionados, but I am concerned that so much passion is channeled in one direction but not in others. The passion for sports is so rabid that I’ve listened to preachers pray for victory for their teams from their

told me that he was so excited about education that he could not move. I’d be thrilled if one of them questioned me about education as intensely as he did about football. I could imagine the questions. Why are test scores so low? Why are children not going to college? Why are so many young Black men (and women, but men pose a special set of issues) alienated from the system? What can we do to provide job opportunities for them? What if someone had passion for our eating habits? Nearly half of the Black population is obese because pork, grease, and artificial snacks are staples of some diets. Why don’t we make healthy living a priority and be as passionate about that as we are about football? Why can’t each one teach one about ways to be healthy? What about housing? As African Americans are being put out of their homes, there have been feeble attempts to modify loans. Those who are working on this have insufficient resources, and just a fraction of those who quali-

pulpits, never mind that those on the opposing team are God’s children too. Can a preacher or two not only throw down on education but also provide vehicles for parishioners to get involved in educating our children? Passion and intensity are important elements of our lives. Without passion we fade into the periphery, ground down by the minutia of everyday life. Get kids to school, go to work, come home for dinner, and relax. If that isn’t your pattern, you’ve got one, and the only thing that pulls you out of pattern is passion. There is nothing wrong with a passion for football. Can we channel some of that passion, and thought, that can transform our world by generating safety, education and job opportunities. That’s the kind of passion that could rock our world! MAHARAJA: THE SPLENDOR OF INDIA’S ROYAL COURTS: Discover the dazzling world of India’s legendary rulers in The Field Museum’s latest exhibition, Maharaja: The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts, ONGOING through February 3, 2013. The exhibition, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, presents over 200 rare artifacts including elaborate jewelry, ornate weaponry, royal costumes, and stunning artworks. From the pomp and circumstance of a royal procession to the inner sanctum of a courtly palace, Maharaja explores the world of India’s rulers from the 1700s to the 1940s taking visitors through an era of great political change. The Field Museum is the final venue on this exhibition’s world tour. Key artworks in Maharaja include exquisitely detailed paintings of royal processions, regalia worn by kings and queens, ceremonial daggers, swords and matchlock guns, hand-crafted instruments and boardgames, and prized photographs by Man Ray and Cecil Beaton. One extraordinary highlight is the Patiala necklace by Cartier which originally contained 2,930 diamonds (including the yellow 234.69-carat DeBeers diamond). The word maharaja¸ or “great king” recalls a turbaned and bejeweled ruler with absolute authority and immense wealth. But this image fails to do justice to the maharaja’s complex role in the cultural and political history of India. The exhibition re-examines the world of the maharajas and their extraordinarily rich culture. The exhibition will introduce visitors to the concept of royal duty in India.

You’ll probably want a special endorsement —a “floater”— that covers the jewelry or fur everywhere and even from what insurers call “mysterious loss.” *** For jewelry or furs, you’ll need a detailed appraisal of value. A jewelry appraisal will list the carat weight and dimensions of any gemstones, their cut, color and quality, and describe the setting they are in.

New CRL Report: Predatory lending practices persist By Charlene Crowell In the first report of its kind, the Center for Responsible Lending has examined consumer lending markets across-the-board and found that despite recent regulatory reforms – predatory lending continues to undermine American households trying to rebuild their finances after the recession.

Charlene Crowell

ly to need to rely on student loans and to become saddled with large amounts of debt upon graduation,” stated the report. “In 2008, 16 percent of African-American graduating seniors owed $40,000 or more in student loans, compared with 10 percent of whites, eight percent of Hispanics and five percent of Asian-Americans.”

households and communities of color. Former Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation chair Sheila Bair authored State of Lending’s

foreword, noting that predatory lending harms the entire U.S. economy. She warns, “If abusive lending practices are not reformed, we again will all pay dearly.”

Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. She can be reached at: Charlene.crowell@responsiblelending.org.

Additional findings showed that: • “Spillover” costs of foreclosures have wiped out nearly $2 trillion in family wealth; • Auto loan interest-rate markups cost consumers nearly $26 billion each year; and • Borrowers in lower credit tiers pay up to 68% higher monthly payments on private student loans than on safer federal loans. The State of Lending is the first of a three-phased and in-depth view of U.S. households’ income, spending, debt, and wealth. It also outlines predatory practices in mortgage lending, credit cards, student loans, and auto loans that undercut the benefits of these products. Incorporating major CRL findings in recent years with pertinent research from sources such as the Federal Reserve Board, the Pew Research Center and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau together provide a broad database for findings.

The State of Lending in America and its Impact on U.S. Households (State of Lending, http://rspnsb.li/stateoflending) paints a picture of working families struggling to manage debt while coping with stagnant incomes and a substantial decrease in wealth. In fact, the housing crisis has produced the largest documented wealth gap ever between white households and families of color. From 2000-2010, AfricanAmerican family wealth dropped 53 percent, and Hispanic families lost 66 percent. By comparison, average white household wealth dropped only 16 percent. The foreclosure crisis and resulting economic downturn have turned back the clock on previous wealth gains, especially in communities of color. The report states, “There is significant evidence that AfricanAmerican and Latino borrowers and their neighborhoods were disproportionately targeted by subprime lenders. Borrowers of color were about 30 percent more likely to receive higher-rate subprime loans than similarly situated white borrowers. Borrowers in non-white neighborhoods were more likely to receive higher-cost loans with risky features such as prepayment penalties.” CRL’s student loan findings echoed these same lending ills. “Low-income students and students of color are even more like-

The next two State of Lending reports will be released in early 2013. The next release will cover payday loans and other financial products that trap people in longterm debt while portraying themselves as short-term solutions. The third and final release in the series will examine abusive practices in debt collection and servicing, and conclude with a chapter documenting how lending abuses often target the same households and have a cumulative—and particularly disastrous—impact on low-income

Despite remaining lending challenges, the report shows that consumers are better off today because of stronger protections on mortgages and credit cards. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which incorporated a number of previous state initiatives to curb abusive mortgage practices, has ended many of the worst practices of the subprime era. And, contrary to industry predictions, the cost of borrowing on credit cards has not increased since the CARD Act passed; transparency has greatly increased and the use of hidden fees has gone down.

“The Truth About Men” by Ian K. Smith, M.D. c.2012, St. Martin’s Press $24.99 / $28.99 Canada 187 pages It’s been a year full of empty calendar slots. You did lots of things with friends and family, that’s true. But you can’t remember the last time you had a date with a man you wanted to see again. All the ones you met this year were boring, babies, or only interested in one thing. Maybe you’re sending the wrong signals. Maybe you missed something important in Dating 101. Or perhaps you need more information, which you might find in “The Truth About Men” by Ian K. Smith, M.D. Your friends all assure you that you’re beautiful. You know you’re smart and you’ve got it going on. So why haven’t you met a decent

his home is his cave and he likes it that way. Always keep yourself up (or at least show effort) and forget about implants and plastic surgery. Don’t try to change him, don’t bring up past relationships, and remember that “[d]ignity trumps bad behavior all the time…” Oh, how I waffled on this book. “The Truth About Men” does, indeed, hold plenty of truth. There are pages and pages here that are common-sense and it’ll be obvious to anybody that much of what author Ian K. Smith says is for real. For the most part, his advice is solid – sometimes. Then there are the things that I thought were preposterous, decidedly one-sided, and almost insulting: tips on physical appearance and what happens if you slip, advice on compromise, and entire passages that largely contradict other points made. Yes, that’s confusing but it does not mean this is an awful book; there’s goodness in here but it requires more than just a grain of salt. If you’re willing to read it thoughtfully, then you may find it helpful.

man yet? Why are your weekend nights spent watching old movies and wishing? Ian K. Smith says that he was attending a seminar with three hundred women when those questions came up and he wanted to tell the women “the real reasons” why men are the way they are. This book is the result. Men, he says, don’t want to feel like they’re being hooked. They want to work (but not too much) to win you over. Making yourself too available is no good for a man. Moving too quickly with “boyfriend/girlfriend” labels or the L-word isn’t good, either. A man, Smith says, is willing to wait a date or two to be intimate, but give him some hope. Men love women who take charge in the bedroom, but they don’t want “Freak of the Week” and, to ensure that there are no surprises, there are certain conversations you need before you get that far anyway. Likewise, it’s no surprise that men aren’t mind-readers. Stop beating around the bush, say what you mean, and don’t say things you don’t mean. Give him a break on holidays. Gather your courage and tell the truth, even if you think it might hurt his feelings. Understand that

If not, then “The Truth About Men” will just leave you empty.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A celebration 105 years in the making: Chicagoan Eva Boswell celebrated her birthday with family and friends By J. Coyden Palmer A South Side woman who recently turned 105 was celebrated for her love of life at the church she has been a member of for over 85 years. Eva Boswell, mother of the “Godfather” of Chicago basketball Mac Irvin who passed away last December, celebrated with her son James Gregory Irvin and dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren at West Point Baptist Church. Boswell’s party after a recent Sunday’s church service gave her the opportunity to enjoy some of her birthday cake while fellowshipping with those who love her the most. “Sister Boswell is living history, full of life, full of love and full of knowledge,” said Pastor L. Bernard Jakes. Boswell joined West Point in Sept. 1926 under Rev. James H. Brown. The mother of four children, three of whom have passed on, Boswell

still lives in the same home in the Park Manor community with her caretaker and other family members. Still able to stand and walk with some assistance, Boswell’s mind is sharp as a tack. Family members joked about her phone calls to them giving her opinion on anything going on in the world. “My grandmother still calls to see how I’m doing and ask me why I haven’t been over to visit,” said granddaughter Cynthia Irvin. “If I haven’t been over there in a while with my two sons, I’ll be sure to be getting a phone call from her asking me what the problem is,” she said laughing. Boswell has seen a lot of history in her 105 years. She said she would have never imagined as a child growing up that she would one day live to see a Black President of the United States. She credits her longevity to living a clean healthy life, having good family and a

strong sense of faith in God. Boswell still even tries to cook and will still make a dish every now and then with the help of her caretaker. Boswell said having so many come out to celebrate her birthday with her made her feel truly special. She offered words of advice for others looking to live a long life; with the key being how a person conducts themselves. “You have to be willing to give love and accepting of that love in return,” Boswell said. “It starts with loving the Lord and all of his creatures in the world.”

EVA BOSWELL WAS all smiles as she celebrated her 105th birthday at West Point Baptist Church.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) ment is more guns simply means more shootings. Personally, no one really knows how this whole thing will play out. We can suspect there will be a number of accidental shootings by newly minted gun owners, as well as some “earning” self-inflicted wounds. But the most important issue is mandating training for those purchasing a gun, regardless of whether they have previously owned a dozen or this is the first one. Training can help ensure that the amount of reckless behavior will be reduced. Training could be a cottage industry, as there are dozens of retired law enforcement officers who get certified and offer lessons. The appellate court’s decision makes Cook County

At the 275 transplant centers in the United States, African-Americans had at least a 35 percent lower chance of receiving a
