Advocate team saves limbs and lives By Lee Edwards Dr. Jaafer Golzar leads a team of Advocate Trinity Hospital doctors responsible for saving over 120 patients from amputations of major lower extremities since 2014. He specializes in Interventional Cardiology along with “minimally invasive techniques to treat peripheral arterial disease, amputation prevention, carotid arterial disease and complex coronary artery disease.” Golzar’s team takes a multidisciplinary approach that utilizes vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, radiology, and podiatry. One of the team’s primary goals is to reduce the likelihood of their patients receiving a major leg amputation. Major leg amputations are considered to occur around the knee area. The main causes of limb loss are vascular disease, including diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (54%), trauma (45%), and cancer, less than 2%. Diabetes rates vary by race, ethnicity, and age; African Americans and Native Americans are at the top of the list. Statistics show that nearly half of the in(Continued on page 3)

New Illinois laws you should know for 2017 By J. Coyden Palmer There will be almost 200 new laws enacted in the state of Illinois alone in 2017. Add to that new fees and ordinances for City of Chicago residents and you almost have to be a paralegal to keep track. With the assistance of State Sen. Jacqueline Collins (16th), the Crusader is highlighting some of the main laws Crusader read-

ers need to know about. Those recently released from prison will now walk to freedom with a state I.D. card in their possession. Sen. Collins said that for years, those attempting to reintegrate into society faced a major obstacle in having identification to prove who they were. Without it, they could not open bank accounts, apply for some jobs and faced a host of other obstacles. Former inmates were forced to purchase a temporary I.D. from the Department of Corrections and later exchange it for a new I.D., for an additional fee, from the Secretary of State’s Office. Thanks to SB368, which requires the Department of Corrections to issue former inmates a 90-day ID at no cost, former inmates are rid of one hurdle. “This will provide inmates with significantly more stability and a larger window to get their affairs in order as they reintegrate back into our society,” Collins said. That is not the only help citizens who have had a run-in with the law are receiving. Those who were arrested, and charged, but never convicted (Continued on page 2)

Cut the lead and cut crime By Patrick Forrest A growing body of research is making it clear that the toxic legacy of lead has far more wide-ranging effects than previously known. Lingering dust from paint and deposits from old vehicle emissions continue to harm thousands of children in older industrial cities like Chicago. Once an obscure academic specialty, the study of lead poisoning is gain-

Dr. Carl Bell ing new appreciation from economists, criminologists and education experts as researchers document that early lead exposure harms children in ways that don’t become apparent until years later. The damage ends up costing taxpayers in the form of increased

spending on health care, special education, and law enforcement. The link between childhood lead exposure and violent behavior is wellestablished, both in animal research and human studies. Small doses can reduce IQ and essentially cause parts of the brain to short out, in particular, the areas responsible for controlling aggression. As these studies have percolated beyond scientific journals, the biggest dispute appears to be how much of an impact the decline of lead in children has had on crime rates. Other experts credit changes such as falling unemployment rates, more police on the streets, higher rates of incarceration and a shift away from the use of crack cocaine as reasons for the decline. Dr. Carl C. Bell is a clinical professor of psychiatry and public health, director of the Institute for Juvenile Research (IJR), University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He has done extensive research on the effects of lead and fetal alcohol syndrome in children. “Every behavior is biological, psychological and cultural,” said Dr. Bell. “We have to look for everything; lead, head injury. We have to always keep our eyes open.” Given the scale of lead hazards in Chicago, advocates say political leaders are overlooking a cost-effective way to help improve schools and reduce crime.

times more than federal officials consider safe. Among the highest test results were at Avalon Park, 1215 E. 83rd St., where water with 1,800 parts per billion of lead was found in an outdoor drinking water fountain. That’s 80 times more than the federal officials consider safe. Another fountain in the South Side park had 1,200 parts per billion, according to the test results. At Grant Park in downtown Chicago, a fountain had water with 1,200 parts per billion. For those exposed to lead as toddlers, even in small amounts, the scans revealed changes that were subtle, but permanent and devastating. Scars left by lead have had significant consequences for the study participants and their communities. As children, those who were exposed to lead poisoning struggled in school more than those who had not been exposed. As teens, it was found that they committed crimes more frequently. “What we found — and continue to find — is that lead sowed the seeds of their future,” said Kim Dietrich, a neuropsychologist who has been following the group of nearly 300 people since they were born in the late 1970s. “It isn’t conducive to behavior we associate with normal development, making smart decisions and success.”

New Illinois laws you should know for 2017 (Continued from page 1) of anything, will now be able to have the arrest expunged from their record in a timely fashion. According to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, over 10,000 people each year are arrested and brought to the jail only to have their charges dismissed. Collins said the arrest record can cause a person to be denied employment, which research shows helps reduce crime. “Individuals who were found not guilty can now file for expungement. Nobody should be forced to have a mark on their record for a crime they did not commit,” Collins said. Staying in contact with family members while incarcerated can also help those in prison rehabilitate themselves when they are released. Collins said prisoners who have a strong, social support system are less likely to return to prison. Thus she helped pass another law that puts a cap of seven cents a minute on collect phone calls that inmates make. Previously the Department of Corrections in each state allowed private companies to bid on the telecommunications contract. But with HB 6200, the DOC will now have to accept the lowest bidder, thus reducing the cost for prisoners to speak with their loved ones, and thereby encour2

access to safer sex options and birth control empowers them to make better decisions.” Women also got another victory with the not so funny “tampon tax.” Previously the sales tax on tampons was 6.25%, like other items. But female legislators backed by womens’ groups repealed the tax on the necessary feminine product. They say the product is directly related to women’s health and is a product which should never have been taxed. “My wife celebrated and so did my daughters,” said Darrell Anderson from Chicago’s South Side. “I thought they were joking when they first told me about it because I had never thought about it. But after I did, it really is a sexist law, seeing that it only affects one gender.” As states across the country continue to pass laws decriminalizing marijuana possession in small amounts, Illinois will now punish those in possession with a $200 fine instead of jail time. Possession in the amount of 10 grams or less will no longer be deemed a criminal offense. Many in the African American community say this law will help limit the number of Black men in jail. The above mentioned new laws are set to take effect on New Year’s Day, 2017. www.chicagocrusader.com

Jackson asks jail detainees to break the code of silence By Chinta Strausberg Keeping true to his mission of serving the least of these, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. visited Cook County Jail on Christmas Day “to bring some joy and relief” to the detainees, but to also ask the detainees to break with the code of silence and help identify the shooters who are driving the murder rate close to 800 for this year. “Most are there temporarily waiting for a pre-trial…just sitting in jail $190 a day. Some have been there five years and cannot get bailed out. They go before the judge who says, ‘You’ve been here longer than your sentence….’” Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s website shows that as of Dec. 23, 2016, the jail population stood at 9,607. There are 7,444 “behind the walls” and another 2,163 on Community Corrections programs. Under the Hardship Project, there are 153 non-violent detainees unable to post a bond of $1,000 or less. Referring to the Community Corrections program, Jackson said there are 2,163 out of jail, but are on ankle bracelets (electronic monitoring). “This costs $100,000. There are about 4,000 who are mentally-challenged who should be under direct treatment outside the jail. “Some have been there in jail for

five years waiting for bond. They cannot afford to get bailed out. They don’t have the money. For them, jail has become a homeless shelter. It’s become a day care center. Many babies have been born in Cook County Jail.” Jackson was joined by his pastor, Rev. Clay Evans; Cong. Danny K. Davis (D-7th); Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown; his son, Jonathan; Rev. Janette Wilson; Toni Wilson, a James Brown impersonator; Farley “Jackmaster Funk” Keith, who provided the house music and others. “It was a pleasure for me to share a portion of my Christmas Day with the inmates of the Cook County Jail to inspire them to change. Everyone deserves a little Christmas cheer,” said Brown who urged them to turn their lives around once they are released. Brown surprised Rev. Jackson when she came over and danced with the female detainees, but so did Rev. Jackson and Davis. Clay, Jonathan and Pastor Michael Eaddy also gave words of encouragement to the jail population. Jackson was serious about challenging President Donald Trump and said he has an urban agenda to give to him. “This is the time we challenge this new president to put forth and plan an urban reconstruc-

We cannot wait for them to send us a plan. Send them an urban policy. There may be more jobs than people,” he told reporters. “We want to stop the flow of guns and stop the violence.”

He also asked the detainees for their help. “We need them to help us. They know who has been shot and who is doing the shooting. We need them to help us contact those who are doing the killing.” Jackson said 75 percent of those who are doing the killing are never found. “We have second- and thirdtime murderers on our streets. Those who are in jail, we need them to become our partners in the process of making where they live safe for their children so their chil-

dren can walk the streets and play in the park and go to school in safety.” He is hoping to inspire and partner with the detainees to break the silence of record-breaking violence in Chicago this year. Part of Jackson’s urban plan includes creating jobs by removing lead paint; cutting down weeds and bushes; put landscapers back to work; tear down houses that must be demolished; and fix up houses and businesses that can be restored.

Advocate team saves limbs and lives (Continued from page 1) dividuals who have an amputation due to vascular disease will die within five years, and of people with diabetes who have a lower extremity amputation, up to 55% will require amputation of the second leg within two to three years. Golzar said one of the leading causes for the high percentage of amputations is based on the culture of the hospital, which leans to that form of treatment first. The Arkansas native, who has been practicing medicine for over 20 years, said one of the concerns African Americans in Chicago face is that their neighborhood hospitals are too small to house essential medical equipment. “When you look at Roseland, South Shore, and some of the other hospitals, they don’t have the capabilities to do what we’re doing,” said Golzar, referring to equipment availability and medical practices at Advocate Trinity, which is located in the Calumet Heights community on Chicago’s far South side. Chicago’s African American population is disproportionately atrisk for major amputations. According to a May, 2008 report www.chicagocrusader.com

released by Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, African Americans residing on Chicago’s South Side and West Side are five times more likely to have a lower limb amputation compared to people living in predominantly white suburbs. The study examined racial disparities in amputations to lower limb extremities in northern Illinois from 1987-2004. Joe Feinglass, research professor of medicine at Feinberg School of Medicine who co-authored the study, explained that the number of amputations is preventable with better primary care. He insisted the health care disparity in the African American community plays a significant role in these findings. Auburn Gresham resident Michelle Johnson-Evans knows intimately how impactful Dr. Golzar and his team’s treatments can be. Johnson-Evans’ husband, Gregory Evans, 59, has been the beneficiary of multiple leg stent surgeries by the team in both of his legs, which have allowed him to stave off major above the knee amputations. Johnson’s history of ailments is extensive. He’s had quadruple bypass surgery, multiple strokes, foot sores, diabetes, aphasia, and peripheral artery disease (PAD),

according to Johnson-Evans. Johnson’s PAD, which has narrowed the peripheral arteries to his legs, will always require consistent medical attention. Johnson formerly received his health care coverage from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Illinois before losing that coverage because Johnson-Evans wanted her husband to be treated by Golzar at a non-network hospital. He is now being covered through Medicare.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

“I don’t know what we would have done if we hadn’t been referred to Dr. Golzar,” said Johnson-Evans. “I know both of his legs would’ve probably been amputated by now.” Paying for an amputation is an expensive proposition for the patient. For those with a lower limb amputation the two-year health costs, including the initial hospitalization, in-patient rehabilitation, outpatient physical therapy, and purchase and maintenance of a prosthet-

ic device is estimated around $90,000. The lifetime healthcare costs for a lower limb amputation is more than $500,000. Before falling ill, Johnson worked for Fox Lumber for 20 years, among other jobs. Despite his various health setbacks, he has remained steadfast in his desire to maintain an active and mobile lifestyle. He is able to walk with the assistance of walkers and canes. “He’s great, he’s doing very, very, well,” said Johnson-Walker. “He helps me as much as he can around the house and so his life is very good.” Johnson-Evans believes that most African Americans are “absolutely not” receiving the same health care options her husband has. She credits the approach of Golzar and the team of doctors. She shared that part of Golzar’s treatment is to use pictures to illustrate to the patient and his/her loved ones what his/her ailments are, what his diagnosis is, and how he intends to proceed. “Dr. Golzar sees his patients as people and not as a number on a chart,” said Johnson-Evans, who referred her own mother, and others, to Golzar. “He’s truly the best.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND A HAPPY NEW YOU America is just days away from a new presidency, and excitement as well as foreboding are evident in many segments of the population. This is because a new president will have the power to significantly change the direction of the country, and with it, the fate of the people. This is especially daunting from the standpoint of those who have benefited from the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), who may lose coverage if it is repealed as promised by the presidentelect. Others are also looking forward with fear, based on threats that the new president will create a Muslim registry, dismantle public education, gut or eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency, and roll back most of the progressive reforms enacted by our first African American president, Barack Obama. The aforementioned issues, along with the deaths of many persons of note, as well as those of family and friends, sums up the year 2016 as tumultuous. Most people are glad to bid it farewell. This is all well and good, but the future tends to be created by the past. In other words, we must learn from our mistakes and look forward to correcting them with an eye toward creating a better future. The African American community has a chance to change things for the better. The past year has seen multiple murders inflicted by members of the community, on the community. Moreover, in 2017 we may be faced with new challenges. It doesn’t appear to be a “business as usual” scenario. Part of the reason is that there may be a huge backlash (whitelash) against the community because of the anger generated by having eight years of an Obama presidency. Also, some of the changes that might take place may challenge the community economically. This is where opportunity comes in. It is said that one of the lessons that we need to learn in life is that we can have a great impact on how the future turns out. We create the future based on what we do today. Though there might be a bumpy road ahead, what happens will depend upon our response to what happens, and not on the circumstances themselves. Interestingly, a number of African Americans have said that they will leave the country rather than endure the upcoming Trump presidential administration. Cooler heads, on the other hand, say that running away will not solve problems. If anything, it might turn out worse for those who leave what has been familiar to embrace whole new territories, both physical and emotional. Therefore, the best way to deal with challenges is to face them. The most important thing to remember in this regard is that there is power in unity, and that a community that works together can weather any storm. The African American community spends more than a trillion dollars a year. This is a lot of money, and strategically spent, can influence the economic outcome of the entire nation. African Americans are not powerless, and whatever changes that may come down the pike can be offset and/or modified by our collective economic behavior. Economic behavior is one of the most potent tools that the African American community possesses. The greatest obstacle that must be overcome, nevertheless, is the self-hatred demonstrated by too many Black people. It is a strange situation that we face wherein just about ANY African American who is able to achieve a modicum of success is attacked as either a sell-out or an agent of a so-called Illuminati. So members of the community have basically two options – to remain poor and disenfranchised while envying those who achieve their goals, or to achieve success and be criticized for achieving their goals. This is a catch – 22, one that must be addressed if the community is to succeed. Even if there are no external challenges, it will be important for the community to heal. It has been long enough, and 2017 presents a great new opportunity in this regard. With this said, the Crusader wishes for you a successful, thoughtful and fulfilling New Year and a new YOU! A luta continua.

The latest, greatest, and dumbest news coming out of Englewood is that the Chicago Public Schools system plans to use some of the $700million-plus money it borrowed to build a new school in Englewood. Before anyone gets all excited about a shiny new school building and actually believes the district or the mayor is out to help the Englewood community, they should access this news for what it is - pure and simple politics. The mayor obviously thinks Chicagoans, particularly the Black population, is made up of fools. Otherwise, why would he order 50 schools closed three years ago, and now come back with promises of a new school? Surely, he doesn’t think we forgot that most of the closed schools were in our neighborhoods. Maybe he thinks we don’t remember that one of the reasons he gave for closing those schools was because of low enrollment. He and his people obviously should have had a kindergartner help them with the evaluation because there are still schools with low enrollment. Those schools are in our neighborhoods. It is bad enough that nearly every one of those shuttered schools sits vacant, but cost the district money for security and heating; the district

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Do we all look like fools? Dear Editor:

didn’t have enough money to maintain them so they did some borrowing. Guess who pays for those bonds? That’s right, you and me, the taxpayers. I guess we are not supposed to recognize that the new school will take several years to build so it will have no bearing on what district officials are citing as low enrollment at several South Side schools. These schools apparently are slated for closure when the new school opens. The mayor’s logic reminds me of the carnival game where the man hides a pea under some walnut shells, moves the shells around and then you guess which shell the pea is under. These so-called activists and the Negro preachers are being bought off by the mayor little by little. The mayor is a smart man and realizes that the more of these kinds of people who are beholden to him, the fewer voices there are to protest what he is doing. The mayor and his school lackey Forrest Claypool continue to disrespect and dupe the Black community. The only logical reason for an investment by the district/city in a brand new Englewood school is there are plans to edge out current residents and bring in a passel of white folks to gentrify the area. Englewood, despite its problems over the years, is still a community with hundreds of majestic historic homes, the location of a thriving community college, and an area “ripe” for takeover. The first step to grease the skids for such a takeover is

to make sure there is a state-of-theart school. We see the area improving with retailers like Whole Foods coming in; there is a CTA red line stop, and access to the Dan Ryan Expressway is extremely easy. All of these factors add to transforming the community from its somewhat blighted state, loaded with African Americans, to (Continued on page 16)

DeVry University students to benefit from $100 million FTC settlement New federal educational requirements designed to eliminate more fraud By Charlene Crowell For the third time in two years, a large for-profit college has faced charges of defrauding its students. This time the charges stem from promises of jobs and incomes that never materialized. On December 15, the suburban Chicago-based DeVry University agreed to a $100 million settlement to end a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Filed in January, the FTC charged that from 2008 to 2015 the for-profit institution engaged in deceptive marketing and advertising. According to FTC, prospective DeVry students were told in recruitment and in advertising that 90 percent of its graduates secured employment in their chosen fields within six months of matriculation. A second institutional promise was that one year following graduation they would earn incomes that were 15 percent higher than those earned by graduates from other colleges and universities. Under the settlement terms, DeVry will pay $49.4 million in cash to qualifying students who were harmed by the deceptive ads, as well as provide $50.6 million in debt relief. The debt being forgiven includes the full balance owed—$30.35 million—on all unpaid private student loans that DeVry issued to undergraduates between September 2008 and September 2015, and $20.25 million in student debts for items such as tuition, books and lab fees. “When people are making impor-

tant decisions about their education and their future, they should not be misled by deceptive employment and earnings claims,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. “The FTC has secured compensation for the many students who were harmed, and I am pleased that DeVry is changing its practices.” Once approved by federal courts, DeVry will be required to immediately notify the students who will receive debt relief as well as credit bureaus and collection agencies of the impending debt forgiveness. DeVry will also release transcripts and diplomas previously withheld from students due to outstanding debt, and will cooperate with future requests for diplomas and transcripts and related enrollment or graduation information. This most recent settlement is yet another reminder of how some of the largest for-profit colleges have failed their students and caused them to become indebted without the educational credentials promised. California’s Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education issued an emergency decision on August 26, directing ITT Tech and its subsidiaries to cease enrollment of any new students at 15 locations across the state. At the time, the for-profit school was also under investigation by other state and federal offices. Once the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) determined that ITT Tech was “not in compliance”, and was “unlikely to become in compliance”

Charlene Crowell with accreditation standards, it lost access to federal student aid before ceasing operations of its national online programs as well as its 130 campuses located in 38 states. As many as 45,000 students had been enrolled at ITT Tech. Just days before Christmas, John King, U.S. Secretary of Education, upheld a September decision that terminated the Department’s recognition of ACICS as the accrediting agency for nearly 240 institutions – most of which were for-profits. Education determined that ACICS failed to meet several regulator criteria and was therefore out of compliance. Even earlier in 2014, CFPB sued Corinthian Colleges, Inc. for luring tens of thousands of students to take

out private label loans, known as “Genesis loans,” to cover expensive tuition costs by advertising bogus job prospects and career services. More than 60 percent of Corinthian school students defaulted on these high-cost loans within three years. Corinthian also used illegal debt collection tactics to strong-arm students into paying back those loans while still in school. Even for borrowers who did not default, interest rates were more than twice as expensive as interest rates on federal loans. Corinthian Colleges was forced in 2015 to close its 107 campuses while its parent organization, ECMC Group agreed to multiple stipulations that included: • $480 million in debt relief for Genesis loan borrowers; • An end to improper debt collection practices; and; • The removal of negative information from student borrowers’ credit reports. Unfortunately, these three colleges and universities often perpetrated their frauds against veterans and people of color. The men and women who earned GI benefits, as well as Black and Latino consumers – many of whom are first-generation college students, do not deserve to be exploited in the pursuit of higher education. “There must be more vigorous efforts to prevent schools that use deceptive practices from accessing federal student aid in the first place,” remarked Whitney Barkley-Denney, a policy counsel with the Center for

Responsible Lending. “We’ve seen the fallout from these abusive recruitment practices over and over again.” Fortunately, two recent federal developments may curb these kinds of educational quagmires. On December 15, President Obama signed into law the recentlypassed Career Ready Student Veterans Act. It will prevent the Veterans Administration from approving programs for GI bill benefits if graduates are ineligible for licensure in related occupations. Similarly, a new U.S. Department of Education rule addresses post-secondary distance education learning, requiring that colleges be authorized to operate in states where their students live. To participate in federal student aid programs, these post-secondary distance education programs must affirmatively certify that enrolled student borrowers are able to obtain state licensure in their field of study. “While these rules are a step in the right direction,” noted Barkley-Denney, “they also underscore the need for states to increase their own role in higher education oversight...States can prohibit schools from enrolling students into programs for which the school is not properly accredited and therefore students are not eligible for licensure in their field.” Charlene Crowell is deputy communications director with the Center for Responsible Lending. Trump Staffers Target EPA and the State Department for The Purge By Bill Fletcher, Jr. (NNPA Newswire Columnist) There have been several disturbing developments over the last several weeks that give us a clue to the approach of the incoming administration. The Trump transition team asked the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the names of staffers involved in global climate negotiations. It did not appear that they were getting ready to offer them awards. On December 21, 2016, The Washington Post reported that the transition team was asking the State Department about grants it provides to global environmental groups. With former Texas Governor Rick Perry as the nominee for Secretary of Energy and Scott Pruitt the nominee to head up EPA, it is as clear as day that the incoming Trump Administration seeks to take the country, if not the world, back about 50 years when it comes to addressing climate change and other environ-

Trump would like to play agnostic on whether climate change is unfolding and suggests that there is actually a debate in scientific circles regarding this matter. I hate to

break it to the President-elect, but there is no more debate in scientific circles about the validity of climate change (and the human role in it) than there was about the connection between smoking and lung cancer. It is worth noting that the long delay in getting recognition of the connection of smoking to lung cancer was directly related to the obstruction emanating from the tobacco industry. Much the same is the case when it comes to climate change. The fossil fuel industry fronts supposed scientists to confuse the debate, despite the fact that they KNOW of the human connection to climate change. The Trump Administration appears to be prepared to throw science to the wind and reject facts, as Trump-the-candidate did throughout his presidential campaign. But what is worse is that it appears that they want to take action against those who have rung the bell about the danger of human-induced climate change. This would be the equivalent of the tobacco

industry taking over what is now the Department of Health and Human Services at the height of the debate on the connection between smoking and lung cancer. Key elements of the Republican Party have made it clear that they wish to overturn the 20th century. In other words, they seek to reverse the myriad gains won throughout the last century and return us to the reality of the late

19th century, with all that that involved. We simply cannot let that happen. The fights we are about to engage in with the new administration will decide everything. KEY CONCEPTS REVISITED Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill At this current stage of history in the Black Liberation Movement, it is im-

portant that key concepts be revisited and re-discussed in our continued efforts to seek clarity on certain ideas that are fundamental to the white supremacy foundation of America. First, there is the idea and concept of the “Maafa.” When we discuss genocide against African People in America, we must also discuss the Maafa, because it was this Maafa that has historically created the on-going genocidal conditions inflicted against African People in America. When we use the term “Maafa” we are talking about an African term used to describe tremendous suffering, indescribable atrocities, disaster, calamity, catastrophe, or injustice. This term is used to refer to the protracted suffering of African people and their culture as a consequence of the Transatlantic Slave Trade System. As the African Maafa researcher Michael Scott explains— “No African was waiting as a slave to be traded to the Europeans. In all regions of Africa, from which Africans were transported, the African was involved in a brutal war declared by the European aggressor, interested in exploiting the human and natural resources of the richest continent on the earth.” Further, Brother Scott reveals,

“These Africans who became prisoners of war were placed in detention camps and then transported to the Americas to be enslaved by the benefactors of their captors. No African began his or her ordeal as a slave. Africans were reduced to slavery by conquest.” It is important for African People to understand and internalize these brief historical facts. Just as the Jews, or any other group of people in the world, internalize their holocaust, and act on it, African People must come to the collective reality of our Maafa and act on it also. Finally, Brother Scott instructs us that, “Our foreparents were innocent victims of these heinous systems of forced labor. They were never able to comprehend being seized in early morning attacks on their villages by vicious raiding parties. They were never able to understand why they were being sold by the avaricious middle men. They could never fathom why they were being marched in fetters and chains to the coast where they were bartered for European merchandise, especially rum and guns. They could never appreciate why they were being warehoused in hell-like dungeons in Elmina or Goree.”

So now that we have some insight into the idea and concept of the Maafa, it should be easier to understand the idea and concept of genocide. In Olumenji’s book, White Genocide, Black Obsolescence, The Question of Black Survival In White America, he defines genocide very succinctly. He says genocide is the “deliberate and systematic destruction of Black people by white American socio-economic and cultural forces.” According to Brother Olumenji, America has created an ideology that justifies the annihilation of African people in this country. This is the function of genocide by those who inflict it on a mass of people. That is, they create a rationale for the annihilation and then try to explain that it does not exist. This was the case in the CIA involvement in cocaine distribution in Los Angeles in which the profits were used to finance the CIA backed Contra army in Nicaragua. This involvement of the CIA caused a proliferation of the distribution and sale of crack cocaine across the African Communities of America, causing serious devastation to our communities. The United States Government tried to

downplay the CIA’s involvement in this incident by saying that this is an isolated situation and in fact this is not true. As a result of the Maafa and the genocide against African People in America, we must step up the demand for Reparations as the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, N’COBRA, is advocating, as are many other African organizations throughout the world. Reparations simply means repair for injuries, harm and damages. As it has been pointed out, over and over again, we were made chattel and worked for more than three-hundred years without pay or other compensation for the value of our labor. The white man and white woman stole and criminally appropriated the services and the value of three-hundred years of labor and then passed it on through inheritance to their children. This process helped create the United States of America and this is fundamental to our demands for Reparations. We must continue to discuss these ideas in our efforts to dismantle our mental shackles. Every race and every ethnic group in the world protects their interests, and African People should and must do no less.

WE WILL MISS THE OBAMAS By Julianne Malveaux As of this writing, President Barack Obama has less than a month left in office. Vacationing in Hawaii, he seems to be using his limited time well, pardoning or commuting the sentences of more than 200 people in December. He has also moved to protect the environment in ways that can’t be reversed by the incoming administration. And he has made some last-minute appointments of people who are likely to be extremely effective in their work. He has even had several talks with his successor, and while it is unlikely that the man who won the Electoral College vote has listened very much, Obama has clearly handled himself with the same dignity and grace that he managed throughout his eight years as President. When Oprah Winfrey interviewed Michelle Obama, the words “dignity and grace” came to me as well. Michelle has been nothing but gracious in transition. Gracious, but also a firm and fierce fighter for her husband and his legacy, for her daughters and their well being, for women and girls around the world. As I watched Oprah and Michelle, I could not help but contrast that interview with one Anderson Cooper did 6

with Melania Trump after the tape where her husband oafishly bragged of assaulting women. Michelle Obama has more class in her tiniest fingernail than Mrs. Trump has in her whole body. Remember when the fashion press pooh-poohed Michelle’s bare arms. Now we have an incoming first lady who, if her hometown newspapers have it right, has bared everything. And not a day goes by when we don’t hear of another business conflict from the President-elect. His winery in Virginia wants to bring in workers on H2B visas to work 40-hour weeks! Is this the same man who excoriated others for sending jobs out of the country, and for bringing foreign workers in? Too many have advised Mr. Trump to divest himself of his many holdings so that he can focus on running the country and avoid conflict. So far, he has not agreed to do so. In Trump-land there is likely to be a scandal every week. But this is not about the Chumps, it’s about the Obamas. How will I miss them? Let me count the ways. I’ll miss President Obama’s cool stride and his even cooler rhetoric. I’ll miss his commitment to social and economic justice. I’ll miss the pardons and commutations and the fact that more than a thousand people have a new lease on life. I’ll miss his self-possession, and the ways he

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2016

Dr. Julianne Malveaux keeps his cool, when others might be publicly steaming. And I’ll miss his very genuine smile. And I’ll miss Michelle’s stylish appearances and her determination to define herself instead of letting others do it for her. Whether she is wearing haute couture or Old Navy sweaters, she looks perfectly in place. Her initiatives to get people moving and eating more healthily are important at a time when so many of our nation’s high schools are not offering physical education classes. And the work she and Dr. Jill Biden have done to work with veteran families has also been important.

Oh, and I’ll miss the parade of African American notables going through the White House. While I’ve fussed that the President never overtly embraced his blackness, he certainly celebrated it when he had the likes of Aretha Franklin and Beyoncé serenading him or performing at the White House. These things are more symbolism than substance but I’m going to miss the symbolism. The Obamas are by no means perfect. I’ve written about the many times I think President Obama has dropped the ball, especially around initiatives with HBCUs. I’d hoped that he’d pardon more people (he still may). I’d hoped for better health care legislation, but I’m mindful that from the day President Obama walked into the White House, his detractors vowed to make his life miserable. For two years, he had both the House and the Senate, but he wasn’t able to work them as effectively as he might have. For the last

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

six years he has met with opposition at every turn, which has limited his success. So he hasn’t been perfect, but we’ll miss him. And I’d rather have President Barack Obama drop the ball than have Crooked Trump put his finger on it. For the next four years the White House is likely to be devoid of dignity. Indeed, if the man the Electoral College picked has his way, he is likely to gold plate the front entrance! We will miss you, Barack, Michelle, Sasha and Malia. You brought class, dignity, fun and restraint to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I’m not sure what Mr. Conflict of Interest brings, except a bunch of billionaires. As we enter into a new year, it is appropriate to make New Year’s Resolutions. Many of which we will not keep. Here’s a few that I am sure will fall into that category. Here we go Ima’s resolutions for 2017:

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS 1. WE WILL LOSE WEIGHT Ima and millions more will make a resolution to lose weight in the new year. The gyms and fitness places will be so crowded that those who have been going all year long will be unable to get in. We know we won’t keep this resolution but we make it every year. This year may be a little bit different because of the uncertainty of the Trump administration. Many natural worriers may lose some pounds wondering what on earth is this strange character with the yellow mane going to do? 2. I AM GOING TO FIND MR. OR MS. RIGHT THIS YEAR Many of our God-fearing friends and neighbors will resolve to find their mate this year. They will depend on God to find that right person for them. You are usually told that you want to find a god-fearing person to complete your life. Well, we all know that most of the time it’s a bust, but go ahead and try again, after all you got to do something in the new year to while away the time and make a new resolution next year.

6. PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP resolves to do at least two or three sensible things like continue to keep the same national holidays, listen to some of the gardeners, cooks and cleaning folks at the White House and not let the whole world know that not only is his thinking not Rahm Emanuel the result of lying kinda like Pinocchio whose nose grew. Come to think about it Rahm’s nose seems to be a bit longer these days. Hmmmm 4. THE CHICAGO URBAN LEAGUE PRESIDENT (whoever that may be) RESOLVES to actually attempt some of that rah rah rah speech given each year at the Annual Dinner in November. Now that it has been practiced for many years, attempting to do some of it at all, will be a new thing to do. 5. GUBNER RAUNER RESOLVES to wear some decent and business-like clothing since

Donald Trump clear, but that he also is a firstclass slob. He resolves not to leave his underwear at the front door of the White House. 7. MIKE PENCE RESOLVES TO REMEMBER HE IS NOT

pinching ways so he can brag how much money he saved and actually do something worthwhile when he has the opportunity to spend some. An example would be to allow Mrs. Pence to buy a new dress now and then, those old frumpy rags she wore in Indiana should be left in Indiana. 8. THAT OUR CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS (whoever turns up) resolve to think about doing some lasting things to benefit their people instead of bagging all the money for themselves and traveling around like they are the security detail for the Trumps and Trumpets.

tration. 11. IMA RESOLVES TO DIG DEEP to keep all the phonies on their toes. To help find something that our dear friend Maze Jackson can do since his regular group is out of power in the newspaper business, as well as political office holders and drink less of the white lightning with Killer so she will not get hit by a bus.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

9. BEN CARSON RESOLVES to do things to benefit those people who need good housing and not to get confused that he is op-

everyone is already reasonably impressed that he has money. And that any store he attempts to buy

3. MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL RESOLVES TO DO SOMETHING NEW THIS YEAR He promises he will practice telling the truth, be for real other than when he has screwed up so he can fool some of the people some of the time, if he can find some folks he can fool. When he’s not scheming to do us all in he had better get to the barber to find out if there are any new techniques for hair falling out or maybe that’s www.chicagocrusader.coM

CVS High School Football Team receives gift of warmth Dorothy Brown and Clerk’s Office Employees Present Winter Coats to Chicago Vocational High School Football Team and other Students On Dec. 22, 2016, the Hon. Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, and members of her staff delivered more than 200 coats to Chicago

Vocational Career Academy (CVS), 2100 E. 87th St., culminating a Winter Coat Drive created to benefit the school’s Varsity Football Team and other students. Upon learning that several CVS football players were not coming to school during recent blistering cold days because they did not have warm, winter coats, Clerk Brown launched an office-wide winter coat drive.

“It saddened me to know that there are children who cannot go to school because they lack the necessary clothing to protect themselves during these harsh winter months in Chicago,” Clerk Brown said. “I want to help the Chicago Vocational school football team members and other students be warm and well this winter, and my Office was eager to join in this effort.”

Employees from throughout the Clerk’s Office contributed new and gently used coats as well as hats and gloves. Clerk Brown and members of her staff presented the winter clothing items to Chicago Vocational High School during a program held in the school’s Cavaliers Café. Chicago Vocational Principal Douglas Maclin, Coach Larry Williams, members of the Cava-

liers varsity football team, other students and faculty accepted the donations during a heartfelt and joyous reception. “We are very happy to be able to give the gift of warmth this holiday season,” Clerk Brown said. “I appreciate the generosity of the Clerk’s Office employees who joined in this important contribution to our children’s health and wellbeing.”

Natalie Portman gives feisty and dignified turn in recollection of Kennedy assassination By Raymond Ward

Mahershala Ali to receive award at International Film Festival Gala

The movie “Jackie” starring Natalie Portman as the aggrieved presidential widow is a great look into the assassination of the late President John F. Kennedy in 1963. It reveals the ensuing chaos and events that led up to the swift

The 28th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will present Mahershala Ali with the Breakthrough Performance Award for his role in Moonlight at its annual Film Awards Gala. The Film Awards Gala, hosted by Mary Hart, will be held Monday, January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The Festival runs January 2-16, 2017. “Mahershala Ali is one of the most in-demand actors in film and television,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Ali gives one of the best supporting performances of the year in Moonlight as Juan, a Miami drug dealer who opens his doors to Little when he sees the boy being chased through the streets by a gang. For this role that has already received several awards and is sure to receive many more, it is our honor to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to Mahershala Ali.” Past recipients of the Breakthrough Performance Award include Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Hudson, Felicity Huffman, Brie Larson, Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Jeremy Renner. In the years they were honored, Cotillard, Hudson, Larson and Nyong’o went on to receive Academy Awards®, while Huffman, Pike

Mahershala Ali and Renner received nominations. A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, Moonlight chronicles the life of a young Black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. At once a vital portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship, and love, Moonlight is a groundbreaking piece of cinema that reverberates with deep compassion and universal truths. In additional to Ali, the film also stars Naomie Harris, Janelle Monáe, Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes and André Holland. For his role in Moonlight, Mahershala Ali received a Golden Globe Award nomination, two Screen Actors Guild nominations and an NAACP Image Award nomination. Ali won two Broadcast Critics’ Choice Awards, and numerous Critics Circle awards including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Boston, etc. Ali was also honored with the Spotlight Award at the Savannah Film Festival and will receive the Virtuosos Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. In addition, the cast will be honored with the Robert Altman Ensemble Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. Ali has a wide-ranging background in film, television and theater. On television, he can be seen in the Netflix series’ Luke Cage and House of Cards. His impressive list of film credits includes Free State of Jones, Kicks, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2, The Place Beyond the Pines, Crossing Over, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Next up he can be seen in Hidden Figures, Roxanne, Roxanne which will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Festival and Alita: Battle Angel in 2018. (Continued on page 13) 12

swearing in of Lyndon Baines Johnson and the solemn funeral procession of Pres. Kennedy. I was eager to learn upon whose account this screenplay was written, since this happened more than 50 years ago. The film provides flashbacks of the shooting, but not actual footage, just a re-staging as history has presented it. The film is anchored on an interview that a print reporter, played by Billy Crudup, is conducting with Jackie after her husband’s death. After searching, I find that the film is based upon the accounts of biographer Theodore H. White, who wrote “For President Kennedy: An Epilogue,” a Life magazine ar-

ticle that ran a week after Pres. Kennedy’s death. The interview, which is conducted in Jackie’s Hyannis Port, Massachusetts home, is intimate, but at times Jackie is really snippy, even telling the reporter—whose name is never revealed in the film—that she will deny certain parts of the interview if they are published. But in Jackie’s defense, the reporter at times seems combative and interrupts her many times. Also, as I later learned, the reporter is a trusted friend. And we must remember that this was being done right after the President’s death. She is a mess, but Jackie tries to stay strong for her

children, always eloquently dressed and concerned about how the late President will be remembered in this moment. She feels encroached upon by the Johnsons, because as she is planning a funeral (even digging up accounts of slain former Pres. Abraham Lincoln’s funeral), Lady Bird Johnson is looking at fabric swatches to help her redecorate their new digs. In White’s magazine article, he details how he didn’t file the story with editors until after 2 a.m., still at Jackie’s home, while she, as well, provided editing for the piece. She was bent on “envisioning” an image of “Camelot,” which is when that term was first used to describe the Kennedy’s time in the White House. The film shows a tour of the White House, led by Jackie, which was televised in 1962, after an elaborate renovation. I viewed that display as sort of an accounting to the American people as to just how the Kennedy administration had spent the public’s funds. However, I don’t buy for a moment that there would have been a Black cameraman as part of a national television recording crew, back in the early 1960’s.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story By Bonnie DeShong In 1977, I was 25 years old and Star Wars was the best movie I had ever seen. I have seen it at least fifty times and can honestly say that all the Star War films that have followed the original have never really grabbed me until Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Why? This is the first film that I really liked and became involved with the characters. I wanted to know more about who they were and how they came together. What was their back story? I cared about them to a point I had to stop myself from displaying emotion during certain scenes.

Director Gareth Edwards did an excellent job in bringing us into the dirt, grit, and understanding of the characters. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is a woman who was raised for the most part by outlaw rebel Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) and then suddenly left alone to fend for herself. Rebel officer and assassin Cassian Ander (Diego Luna) does what he is told whether he likes it or not. He doesn’t like Jyn but they soon come to depend on each other. Neither is as they seem and the relationship that develops is one of being comrades. There are many wonderful characters that make up the eclectic band of rebels who set out to steal the plans of

(Continued from page 12) Not much is revealed about Pres. Kennedy’s alleged affairs, but in a somber chat with the President’s brother, Robert Kennedy played by Peter Sarsgaard, Jackie speaks of “Jack’s flaws.” Jackie is quoted as saying that she brought life to a cold house, in referring to the condition of the White House when Pres. Kennedy was elected in 1960. She also made a comment about a

First Lady always having to have her bags ready. She laments that she never wanted fame, even though after all these years, she is fondly remembered as being at the helm of a “Camelot” era in the White House. And it is up to discussion about whether this sentiment was real or just thrown in the public’s face after the President’s death, in an effort to discount all the alleged infidelity and unpleasant events associated with

the Kennedys. In a nod to all the old, stodgy paintings that adorned the White House walls, Jackie alluded to Pres. Kennedy’s likeness in this way. “Pretty soon, he’ll be just another oil portrait lining these hallways.” “Jackie” is playing in theatres everywhere, and Portman’s name and the film have been bandied about in association with many film awards.

9th Ward expands Individual Artist Program Grants Call for Artists to Submit Entries for Murals to Enhance Viaducts Chicago’s professional artists will have more opportunities to bolster their careers while enhancing the Pullman and Roseland communities, thanks to the “Artist’s Mural Program,” a new initiative unveiled this week by 9th Ward Alderman Anthony A. Beale in tandem with the City of Chicago’s 2017 Individual Artist’s Program (IAP). The IAP and Alderman Beale are seeking murals designed by Chicago artists to interpret the community’s social and cultural history on four viaducts along South Cottage Grove at 95th, 100th, 111th and 115th streets. A $20,000 cash award from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the 9th Ward’s aldermanic menu

will be allotted to artists selected for each site for exposure and execution of the chosen designs. DCASE and the Alderman are each allocating a total of $40,000 for the Mural Program. “The aim of the 9th Ward’s Artist’s Mural Program is to discover and nurture practicing artists and creative professionals from across the city while beautifying the landscape and enhancing the image of the ward,” said 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale. “It’s another way we’re working to make our ward a better place to live, work and visit,” added Alderman Beale. To be eligible for the 9th Ward’s “Artist’s Mural Program,” applicants must be a resident of the City of Chicago with a valid street address and be a professional artist or creative entrepreneur who has specialized training in the field. Portraits of residents hang in South Side Metra Stations Metra through a streamlined Community Enhancement Program is hoping to instill a stronger sense of community in residents by hanging portraits of the people that actually live in the community of the train stations. The first artwork to be installed in Metra stations under the program were hung earlier this month at the 87th and 93rd Street stations along the South Chicago branch of the Metra Electric Line. They feature portraits of residents of the South Chicago neighborhood and were created with the assistance of people who also live in the neighborhood. “This is precisely the kind of artwork that we were hoping for when we upgraded our program earlier this year – something that would help foster a strong sense of pride and ownership in this community,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. “We will be enhancing stations in a historic Chicago neighborhood using portraits of people who live in the community that were done with the help of local artists.” The enhancement project was pitched to Metra by archi-treasures, a nonprofit organization that combines the arts and community development to improve Chicago neighbor14

hoods by involving people in projects that transform public space and increase civic engagement. Creative professionals and community members partner to improve neighborhoods while strengthening social bonds. This year, the organization piloted a new program model at Germano Millgate Apartments, a subsidized housing complex in South Chicago with more than 300 units. Residents collaborated with Chiara Galimberti, an Italian artist, to create 22 portraits of people who live in South Chicago.

One portrait will be hung at the 87th Street Station and a second will be hung at the 93rd Street Station. The portraits will be accompanied by an informational plaque describing the project and referring interested viewers to a website for more information. “I am excited to have an art installation of portraits showcasing the strong, vibrant people of South Chicago at the Metra stations on 87th Street and 93rd Street,” said 10th Ward Alderwoman Sue Sadlowski Garza. “It is a testament to the work of archi-treasures and the youth artists of Germano Millgate as they honor our constituents to commuters from Chicago as well as Indiana. An art installation at these particular train stops will instill pride in our neighbors that the 10th Ward matters to the region!” “The goal of this project is to represent the people who live at Germano Millgate Apartments by broadcasting their portraits publicly and telling their stories, thereby challenging a dominant narrative about low-income housing that is largely inaccurate as well as humiliating to residents,” said Joyce Fernandes, executive director of archi-treasures. “These portraits are part of archi-treasures’ Front Porch

Project, which creatively examines the front porch as a place of neighborly exchange that marks the border between private/family space and public/community space.” This past September, Metra streamlined its Community Enhancement Program by outlining specific activities in which community groups can engage, providing an online application form and offering detailed selection criteria to help guide proposals. Partners must be willing and able to

fund their projects, although, in some cases, Metra may be able to contribute some materials or workforce support to make them more lasting and safe. Program activities can include: art projects that reflect the unique characteristics of the local community, including murals on or adjacent to facilities; free-standing sculptures, mosaics and photographs; painting and beautification of public areas, including viaducts, columns and bridge walls; and installation and maintenance of plants, shrubs, flowers and other landscaping enhancements. Partners and projects are selected based on the following criteria: artistic quality of the proposed enhancement; appropriateness of the proposed enhancement to the site; permanence, durability, maintainability and use of high-quality materials; absence of hazards to the public; and recommended measures to protect against vandalism. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Doing is better! My beloved Mom, W.D Rolfe always reminded me that the things I say I am going to do are good. However, to actually do those things is far better. To quote her exact words, “Old Gonna’ is a good dog—but ‘Do’ is the best!” She wanted my words to mirror my actions and my actions to mirror my words. I share that same sentiment today as I close my eyes and find myself about to step into a brand new year! Now is the time to find ways and means to do what matters most. Very often in order to accomplish that feat, we must do what is necessary, instead of waiting, wishing and regretting. The right time is while YOU still have time. You have exactly 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes and 31,536,000 seconds to get it done. That’s enough time to go around the world and back. Guess what? Waiting for a perfect situation or the right reason only

means a longer wait. In other words, when you wait to do what you already know to do, you are using sorry excuses from last year. And you already know that. That’s why it’s time to stop slacking off and get serious about accomplishing your goals and aspirations. You are not getting any younger! But you already know that. It is my opinion, the core reason most people wait before taking action; procrastinate or put off taking care of business is because of that four-letter word known as FEAR. Everywhere you look fear exists. Is this a surprise? No, of course not. What may surprise you is that most people would rather live in a known hell than face fear head on! Fear is not the enemy. No response and doing nothing is the real and true enemy! Face the fears as the adrenalin rushes and do what it takes to get going and complete the job! You really are bigger than your fear. Why because greater is He that lives in you! What is the worse that could happen

if you don’t succeed? Try and try and try and try and try! C.S. Lewis said, “Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.” No one is or ever will be exempt from mess-ups—it’s an integral part of life. Television Host, Tavis Smiley even wrote a book titled, “Fail Up: 20 Lessons on Building Success from Failure.” 2017 is your best year yet! Greatness, favor and blessings are all reserved just for you! Seize the opportunity now. Not tomorrow and heaven knows not next year… since you’re not getting out of life alive—do it now or die trying. I remember several fond memories of growing up in Arkansas, one in particular was being reminded over and over that life is too short to wait on time because time waits for absolutely no one. If I remember correctly it was the “weight” that actually broke the bridge down. You don’t have to start with perfection, but you do have to start somewhere! Act now! New Year! New beginning! New faith! “….according to

your faith let it be done to you (Matthew 9:29).” It truly is all about timing! So set your clock. Make a paradigm shift. Change the way you see yourself this year. Maya Angelou said, “Nothing changes unless you do…” The way to change your life and impact the lives of others is to come out of hibernation and spring forward. It’s your choice. Make that change. You are destined to do great things in 2017. If you put one foot in front of the other, it’s just a matter of time before you make the Change. Step by step! Transparency is not a friend of Emanuel’s Dear Editor: It is common knowledge that Rahm Emanuel held onto the videotape of Laquan McDonald’s murder until after the last election. The common thinking is he did so because had the public seen the tape prior to the election, Emanuel would be ex-mayor. Of course he denied that was the case, but very few people believe him. If we fast forward to this week, when his administration released all of his emails, we see withholding information is a way of life for him. Just like Emanuel kept the videotape under wraps, he did the same thing with plans to combine the South Shore Cultural Center golf course with the Jackson Park Golf Course, thereby creating a course worthy of Professional Golfers Association play. Apparently the idea was kept hush hush because city officials didn’t want the usually vocal Jackson Park neighbors to get wind of the plan. If the plan is solid, the city should be able to defend it. If it is on the up-and-up what was the need for secrecy? So, if Rahm has his way the new golf course will be a stone’s throw away from the site of the Obama Presidential Library, to be built on public space in Jackson Park. conspiracy to make the area among the most sought after on the South Side, and drive out the majority of people, primarily Black folks, living there. Throw in Lake Michigan and you have a potential real estate development that rivals anything on the northern edge of the city. It will be just as white too. A lot of people might remember Emanuel’s re-election videotape-the one with him wearing a sweater-and promising to listen to residents more. It is pretty clear residents will not be talking about the right things as long as City Hall is committed to secrets about what should be open and transparent plans. Emanuel continues to believe he is always the smartest person in the room, and can get away with anything. The lie he tells to get out of why this golf course news shouldn’t have been in the public domain long before a court ordered the release of the emails, will be a doozy. Unfortunately, like so many things Emanuel, lots and lots of people will give him a break on this one, especially since Tiger Woods’ design company will lay out the course. They will believe that the level of “Black involvement” is somehow good for the city. Who knows that once Woods finds out how underhanded this whole thing is, if he won’t bow out? Had Emanuel and his people been forthcoming about the project, I doubt they would have received the same level of flack he will get now. We need to find a way, maybe through the city council, to learn what else Emanuel is keeping from the public. No doubt as more of these emails are scrutinized by the local news outlets, more and more of Emanuel’s shenanigans will be brought to the light. I don’t look forward to seeing them. It looks like Emanuel is trying to be as slick as Mayor Daley II, but it is obvious he has a long way to go before he is that good. Marvin Goodwin

Christmas holiday generosity all around Chicago

ALDERMAN ANTHONY BEALE (right) recently hosted 79 families and 281 children at the 9th Ward’s annual Christmas Party at Corliss High School in North Pullman. The party featured gifts for the entire family and a meal. All of the families were attending the holiday party for the first-time at the invitation of the school’s principal, Dr. Leonard Harris.

EACH CHILD BETWEEN 2-13 years of age received three gifts, ranging from lap-top computers to bicycles and video games, while their parents competed for large screen televisions, blue-tooth speaker systems and other great prizes as part of a raffle contest. The 5th District of the Chicago Police Department donated 100 new bicycles.

NBC 5’S ART NORMAN served as honorary Santa for the 100 Black Men of Chicago, Inc.’s 15th Annual Holiday Party and Toy Drive. Norman is pictured with members of the Chicago Police Department who hand delivered toys to the event.

MORE THAN 1,100 people attended the 100 Black Men of Chicago Toy Drive held at the Old Crow Smokehouse in Chicago’s River North community. The party with a purpose collected over 1,000 toys for underserved families with children at select Chicago area schools, community organizations, and shelters.

CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY for hundreds of sick children at Advocate Trinity Hospital thanks to one of the hospital’s cafeteria worker Jessie Tendayi. For the last 8 years, Tendayi has worked extras shifts and saved her hard-earned money to buy toys for patients at Advocate Children’s Hospital over the holidays. This year, Tendayi saved $5,000 to donate 1,000 toys to delight the children. Michael Strahan of “Good Morning America.” announced Toys “R” Us had donated $5,000 to help Tendayi continue her good work. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2016
