One Black institution falls as another rises

Seaway Bank closure leaves The DuSable bounces back big hole in Black Chicago as number of visitors surges By J. Coyden Palmer Last week’s shocking news that Seaway Bank & Trust Co. was taken over by a bank from Texas showed the dire situation African-American banks are in around the country, according to Congressman Bobby Rush (D-1st) and others. Illinois Service Federal Saving & Loan is now the only Black-owned bank in the Chicago

area. Seaway—an institution in the Chatham community on the South Side since 1965— has had their deposits taken over by the State Bank of Texas. “With fewer than 30 Black banks remaining in the U.S., the crisis for African-American banks is obvious and growing,” Rush read from a statement. “Difficult economic conditions in the African-American community and (Continued on page 3)

By Erick Johnson The DuSable Museum of African American History and Culture saw a big jump in visitors as interest in Black history continues to grow with the new Smithsonian Black Museum in Washington, D.C. Attendance at the DuSable was up 15 percent, according to the latest number from Museum in the Park (MIP), a group of publicly

owned and operated prominent museum and institutions managed by the Chicago Park District. According to MIP, 115,364 people visited the DuSable last year. Out of 15 museums and attractions, the DuSable was one of four institutions that posted double digit gains in 2016. The other three were the Art Institute of Chicago, which had 1.8 million visitors — a 15 percent increase; the (Continued on page 14)

Blowing the whistle on the Emmett Till murder case Accuser unlikely to face charges for perjury after confession By Erick Johnson

Now, Till’s murder case is back in the national spotlight with a new book where Donham recants her story, after more than 60 years of silence since Till was brutally killed by two white men in Money, MS. In the book, The Blood of Emmett Till, Donham said she lied during the criminal trial (Continued on page 2)

He’s been dead for more than 60 years. Buried with Emmett Till was the truth to what led to a brutal murder in 1955. A new book about the murder is out and the woman whose accusations led to the brutal killing of the 14-year-old confessed that her story was a lie. Like Till’s killers, Carolyn Bryant Donham will not be brought to justice or face any charges for perjury. Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, never found justice for her son before she died in 2003. Now, the last surviving figure in one of the most shocking murder cases from the Jim Crow era will mostly likely go unpunished.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Legal analysts say the case involving Donham is too old to prosecute, and Till’s killers have been dead for a long time. Till was a fun-loving teenager who lived in

Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood for years before he made a fateful trip to Mississippi at a time when many Blacks were being lynched and terrorized in the Deep South.

Blowing the whistle on the Emmett Till murder case (Continued from page 1) before her husband, Roy Bryant, and J.W. Milam were acquitted after proceedings that lasted just over an hour. For decades, Donham remained silent as millions of Americans were led to believe that Till whistled at her before the two men kidnapped him in the pre-dawn hours of August 26, 1955. The two murdered Till during a brutal beating that severely disfigured Till’s face and body. They shot him in the head before throwing his body in the Tallahatchie River. Days later, Till’s body was found with a large cotton gin fan tied around him with barb wire. Mississippi officials urged Till’s mother to keep his body shut tight in the box, but Till-Mobley defied the orders. Pictures of Till’s face in Ebony, Jet and other newspapers horrified the nation and the world. At an open-casket funeral at the Roberts Temple Church of God in

say Till’s murder led Rosa Parks to refuse to give up her bus seat in a historic act that sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement. The Emmett Till murder case continues to burn with interest today and is the subject of many books and documentaries. However, this latest book on Till’s murder is drawing significant interest because it involves an elusive white woman who has broken her silence after avoiding the press and Till’s relatives for more than 60 years. In 2004, the late “60 Minutes” correspondent Ed Bradley located Donham at her home in Greenville, MS. His cameraman captured her on video, but the journalists were chased away from the property after Donham’s son arrived. Already, The Blood of Emmett Till is drawing rave reviews from readers who received an early copy of the book. Written by Duke University scholar, Timothy B. Tyson, the

book also chronicles the life of Donham, who is twice divorced and married three times. The book also answers a question about the Till murder case that many Blacks knew for years: that Till did not flirt with Donham. On “CBS This Morning,” Tyson said he was connected to Donham after her daughter-in-law called him and told him that she liked his previous book, Blood Done Sign My Name. At the time, Donham was writing her memoir, which she said won’t be made public until 2036. The Blood of Emmett Till, which had a limited pre-release to selected news outlets, includes graphic details of the murder and the events surrounding the aftermath of Till’s murder. The book also includes the intense racial and social climate of Blacks living in Money, MS. However, the part of the book that’s stirring the most interest is Donham and the place where Till’s fate began: the Bryant grocery

The store was owned by Donham’s first husband. During the trial, Donham claimed Till whistled at her when she came out of the store where Till and boys played on the steps. On the witness stand, Donham claimed Emmett grabbed and asked her, “How about a date, baby?” She also said Till had made verbal and physical advances towards her. But in the book, which hit stores Emmett Till Jan. 31, Donham said that part CAROLYN BRYANT DONHAM in 2004 was captured on video Christ in Bronzeville, Till’s mother wasn’t true, according to excerpts wanted to show what the men had by a “60 Minutes” camerman while the late television journalist Ed published in the magazine, Vanity done to her son. Donham also said in the book that she “felt tender sorrow” and admitted “nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him.” Some relatives who spoke to the Chicago Crusader aren’t happy with Donham. Some are angry that Donham not only lied, but waited 60 years to tell the truth. Others are angry that Tyson, the author, waited 10 years to come forward with Donham’s confession. Some say they won’t buy the book. In an interview with the Crusader, one of Till’s cousins, Airicka Gordon-Taylor, who lives in Chicago, said she learned about Donham on Jan. 27 after a friend from Los Angeles called her about the Vanity Fair article on the magazine’s website. “I was lying in the bed and wasn’t feeling well when she called,” said Gordon-Taylor, who marked the EMMETT TILL’S COUSIN, Airicka Gordon-Taylor speaks during a ceremony in 2015 that 60th anniversary death of Till last marked the 60th Anniversary of Emmett Till’s murder. year with a ceremony at Burr Oak 2

Cemetery where he is buried. “I said what? I was surprised when I saw this all of a sudden.” Like many Blacks, Gordon-Taylor said she had always known that Donham’s accusations were false, but she grew particularly upset when Donham compared the grief of losing one of her sons to that of Till-Mobley’s grief over her murdered child. “There’s no comparison. Her husband brutally killed my cousin,” Gordon-Taylor said. Another cousin of Till, Wheeler Parker, 77, was with the teenager when he was kidnapped from a bedroom of his uncle’s home in Money. Parker said Donham’s confession brings some closure to Till’s death. “I was pleased with her confession, but a lot of family members are upset,” he said. “But a lot of people are going to see Emmett the way I wanted them to see him for 60 years. This brings a lot of closure for me.” Parker plans to release a book that will detail his own personal account of Till’s story. Titled A Few Days and Full of Trouble, Parker hopes to release the book in March. As for Donham, she has nothing to worry about despite her confession. In 2007, a grand jury decided not to indict Donham in the murder after an 8,000-page inquiry by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The U.S. Justice Department began an investigation into the Emmett Till lynching in 2004, Emmett’s body was exhumed for an autopsy, and the F.B.I. rediscovered the long-missing trial transcript. www.chicagocrusader.com

Seaway Bank closure leaves big hole in Black Chicago (Continued from page 1) an inability to expand into more creative and innovative products have limited the amount of economic growth for these banks.” Depending on who you talk to, what caused Seaway to fail is a multilayered question with many answers. Banking experts believe Seaway fell victim to overexpansion and took a major hit during the housing crisis in 2008. Others say after the death of its founder, Jacoby Dickens in 2013, some of the decisions made by the bank’s leadership put the business in jeopardy, including the removal of the CEO shortly after Dickens’ death. Perhaps the biggest reason involved Seaway losing focus of its primary mission and in some ways abandoning its base community, according to Otis Monroe, founder of the Monroe Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 to provide technical assistance in starting community and economic development projects within low-in-

The late Jacoby Dickens come communities. “I think the genesis of why Seaway failed is because since Jacoby passed, Seaway became significantly disconnected from the African-American community,” Monroe said. He went on to say, “Our organization for over two years, attempted to sit down with the former chairman of the bank to talk about how to make the bank relevant again in the changing marketplace and we could never get to meet with them. Just as much as they were sponsoring different events, they could have been creating partnerships. Seaway just didn’t make itself a player in the dialogue that the African-American community and social enterprise advocates are having around rebuilding and stabilizing the Black community. They didn’t have leadership at those meetings, so those of thus within that community embraced the banking options and choices that responded to our advocacy.” In 1991, Monroe shared that the then-called Seaway National Bank received a “needs to improve” rating www.chicagocrusader.com

from its regulator at the time. It is one of the worst ratings a bank can receive according to Monroe. The rating was based on Seaway’s failure to adhere to the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), a federal law created in 1977 that is intended to encourage depository institutions to help meet the credit needs of the communities in which they operate. Monroe stated that Seaway, like many Black institutions, failed to adapt to the changing times in its industry. He said he has already spoken with Chan Patel, CEO of State Bank of Texas, to see if he can negotiate some initiatives that are more reflective of the lending, banking and investment opportunities within the African-American community. “I’m hoping we can make some headway with some new leadership that we were not able to make under the former ownership,” Monroe said. “There is a growing social enterprise movement in Chicago where non-profit organizations that are spinning off their workforce development programs to create community ventures that actually compliment the job training programs. Many of them need the seed financing to launch their social enterprises. That is something we are hoping to work with State Bank of Texas on.” Another reason Seaway landed itself in trouble was African Americans have more financial options than they have ever had before, according to Professor Linnae Bryant, an accounting and finance instructor at Chicago State University. A resident of Chatham, Bryant said Seaway was slow to add new technology for customers “I’m disappointed it happened, but I’m not surprised,” Bryant began. “And the reason is because I know they’ve always had some challenges at being competitive as far as technology is concerned; that had always been a source of frustration for me. Once Chase and Bank of America decided they were going to do community outreach and they came into the community, Seaway couldn’t compete.” Bryant said she and many others with a like mindset stayed with Seaway as long as they did out of a sense of duty to the community. She is the faculty advisor to an organization called the National Association of Black Accountants and they had their operating accounts at Seaway since 1995 because she insisted an organization of Black accountants do business with a Black-owned financial institution. “I feel one of the biggest things to come out of this will be the community will feel a loss of ownership in the financial stake in the community,” stated Bryant. “You’ve lost a pride in ownership and that will

I haven’t had the time to truly put into words how much this disturbs me. We have so much economic power and refuse to come together and use it.” In the meantime, Monroe is continuing his efforts to do just that. On Feb. 18th, the Monroe Foundation is partnering with the Center for Economic Progress to launch a mobile tax clinic in the village of Maywood in Proviso Township. The clinic will provide an opportunity for income-challenged families and senior citizens to have their tax returns prepared and filed for free as well as receive other financial coaching instructions. In the coming weeks, Monroe will also be hosting a symposium to discuss the state of Black banks and banking choices, in general, within the city of Chicago. For more information, contact Otis Monroe at (773) 315-9720.

Obama endorses Sophia King for 4th Ward alderman communities better. Sophia is the type of leader Chicago and the 4th Ward needs.” This is the second time Obama endorsed a political official in his hometown state. During the primary lastMarch, Obama endorsed Julianna Stratton as she ousted longtime State Representative Ken Dunkin. This time around, Obama is throwing his weight behind a candidate in Chicago politics. Leading in campaign contributions, King has strong support from several Black aldermen. Mayor Rahm Emanuel appointed her interim alderman after Burns left the post in March. She also has the support of 8th Ward Alderman Michelle Harris and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who served as 4th Ward alderman from 1991 to 2010. Two of King’s opponents, Livingston and McCarthy have expressed their disappointment about the endorsement in news reports. Livingston said the endorsement is a sign of weakness and that supporters are not confidant that King can win on her own. McCarthy said Obama should have “stayed out of it and let the people decide.” King and her husband are also friends of the Obamas, whose mansion in Kenwood is located in the 4th Ward. The $500 million Obama Presidential Center will be located in Alderman Leslie Hairston’s 5th Ward in Jackson Park.

GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, EXCEPT MUSLIMS! President Donald J. Trump hasn’t been in office two weeks and already he has created worldwide chaos! One of his first moves was to issue an executive order putting a temporary ban on immigrants, including refugees, coming from seven (7) mostly Muslim countries; Iran, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Somalia. Allegedly this move is to protect American citizens from potential terrorists. This does not ring true however, because we have not experienced terrorism perpetuated by individuals from any of these locales. We know however, that Saudi Arabia has possibly had some involvement in unsavory activities, but they were not included in the ban. This is because, as one Trump administration member stated, they are our friends. The executive order that was issued for the ban has people all over the world upset, and has created havoc in many, many lives. In one situation, a woman who lives in the United States worked for a family here. She went abroad for a vacation to visit family, but upon returning home, she was not allowed into the country. This will jeopardize her job. There were many other people caught up in this malicious move. People are calling the ban “unAmerican” and there have been demonstrations at key airports. In New York, taxi drivers have boycotted because of the ban. The White House issued a statement saying that “Getting Ahead of the terrorist threats is key.” One hundred and nine (109) people have been temporarily detained, but the White House doesn’t see this as a big problem. They allege that immediate implementation is needed to keep “a lot of bad dudes from rushing into our country.” This is an appalling turn of events. One woman who participated in the March on Washington the day after the Trump inauguration spoke with an elderly Jewish woman, a holocaust survivor, who was at the March. She told her fellow marchers that “this is the way it started” (i.e., the atrocities of Nazi Germany)! That is a chilling thought, because there are a number of other Trump initiatives that smack of the Nazi regime. With this move, the Trump administration has managed to demonize a whole religion. This is especially ironic considering the fact that the American colonists were fleeing religious tyranny in England ultimately resulting in the birth of this nation. Another troubling situation that has arisen in the first week of President Trump’s occupancy of the White House is the removal of a number of state department employees and the appointment of Steve Bannon to the National Security Council. This is a strange move, and portends an administration that instead of playing by the rules, is bending them to suit its needs. Bannon is a scary individual, a proponent of the so-called Alt-Right who has been known to be racist. The other Trump appointees have all been people who want to deconstruct America and remake it in their image. If they get their way, the America that exists now will change to such an extent that we might not recognize it. This is not to say that we have had a perfect past, far from it. But the values espoused by this country are such that citizens expect certain things to happen, and because of our democratic principles, we have had access to the courts in order to remedy issues. Whether true or not, Americans, recent immigrants included, have come to expect fair treatment. This is why the current ban has ruffled so many feathers. It is being seen as a mean-spirited move; one that divides people rather than bringing them together. It could also have the unexpected consequence of endangering American lives by enraging and emboldening those who are actually terrorists. Yes, a dark pall has fallen on America. To his credit, former president Barack Obama weighed in on the situation lauding citizens for supporting democracy by standing up and resisting those things that threaten democratic values. People who have not seen a need to vote or otherwise participate in civic processes need to take heed: if something exists (democracy) and you don’t nurture it, it just might go away! We could lose whatever gains that we’ve made. Hopefully, enough people will see the light and help prevent these negative changes from taking effect; if we don’t resist, we can’t win! A luta continua.

Now that Trump (I refuse to use president in front of his name) has the world in an uproar about Muslims and entry into the U.S. Black people in Chicago, and probably other parts of the country seemed divided. I know that is no surprise and we’re usually more divided than united. This time the chasm here is whether Black people should be supportive of the immigrant communities Trump is targeting, or should we just be concerned about Black issues, and say the Muslim thing is none of our business. Personally, I think we have to get behind the immigrants and the American Civil LIberties Union (ACLU). The latter is leading the legal charge against Trump’s orders and to date are doing an outstanding job. I think we need to side with the immigrants because first and foremost it is the morally correct thing to do. What may override our moral responsibility is our duty of self-preservation. We have no way of knowing how soon Trump will attempt to impose something on the African-American community that will set us back 100 years or so. With all of his appointments Trump has shown he has absolute-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Immigration moves has Black Chicago perplexed Dear Editor:

ly no regard for engaging Black people in a positive way. What is even worse is we have had fewer than a handful of Black Illinois legislators on the state or federal level speak out against this Trump atrocity. This may very well be the hottest issue of the year, I know it is early, and people we elect want to sit this one out. It is especially surprising to see Sen. Kwame Raoul offer up nothing but crickets given his family is from Haiti. The United States has not been especially kind to people from that island trying to relocate here. I guess since Haitians aren’t Trump’s targets today, the senator feels he can sit this one out. Alderman Howard Brookins likes to flaunt his long tenure as a city councilman. He definitely should be vocal and visible about the immigrants. Maybe all of the above are in the camp of Black people that say the Muslim community has never stood with Black people in times of peril. I have to disagree with that, as well as the notion they won’t stand with us in the future. This new president is going to force all kinds of non-white folks to hook up. The smart ones among us know that the sooner we come together the easier it is going to be to dispose of Trump, either by running him out of office, or at the very least voting him out in four years. The Wall will stop more than illegal immigration Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford The Wall along our southern border will indeed be built and it is at least 30 years overdue. Mexico does a lot of serious and legal trading with the United States. In fact, we have a trade deficit with them of over $60 billion annually. They are getting over on us and President Trump is going to deal with that. But that isn’t the problem the Wall will address. Illegal immigration is alive and well. People living in the San Diego area are warned by traffic signs to beware of people running across Interstate 5 (like deer signs). I have experienced that. A couple of years ago, we were driving into the city and to my shock there were about 30 humans running across the freeway. Most of them were children and I had to swerve and brake at the same time. It was a blessing that the lane to my right was available. The caution signs were appropriate. I imagined most of the teenagers and adults in this group will first end up working as cheap labor in the farm areas. Many will

Harry C. Alford end up in Oregon and Washington and California. That is an everyday thing across our border. Traveling to the destination seems to be no problem as illegal immigrants who work the fields are in just about every state in the union. This must

be an impediment to unemployed American workers who would demand at least minimum wage. Unfortunately, there is a very sleazy side to this. The male workers who live in areas of limited population are supplied comfort ladies. Where do they come from? The same place as the workers. They are teenage females who are led into crossing the American border and forced into sex slavery. My son noticed this shameful business while visiting a small town in Vermont. These girls would be sitting outside a large farm on benches waiting for the workers to get off from work. They would take their “John” into a cabin area located along the side of the farm. It shouldn’t take authorities too long to catch onto this and bust it up. They must go along with it and that is an American tragedy. This alone should make us threaten the annual foreign aid we give to Mexico if they don’t bring this to a stop. That is just one problem that involves our southern border. Auto theft is another problem. It is quite easy to steal a car; pay off a Mexican border agent and sell it

to a “chop shop.” That car will never be seen again and the Mexican authorities have little interest in finding it. If you visit border cities such as Tijuana, Juarez etc. never, never take your car and park it across the border. The above are two problems that are generated by our southern neighbor. However, if you take all the problems that originate in Mexico and affect the United States and add them up the total would not begin to approach our biggest problem with the Mexican border – Cocaine. Over 90% of the cocaine that is smuggled into America is from Mexico. It seems to run freely despite the efforts of our border security guards. The cocaine industry in Mexico is run by four major cartels. They are the Sinaloa Cartel, Gulf Cartel, Tijuana Cartel, and the Colima Cartel. These are some of the most dangerous crime groups in the world. The Mexican Army has proven to be no match against them. The rate of corruption (politicians, military and police) is out of hand. 90% of the murders in the nation of Mexico are directly related to the cocaine drug industry. They have a pres-

ence in over 500 cities throughout the nation. This is our challenge. Cutting down the flow of cocaine coming into our nation from Mexico. Don’t worry about marijuana. There is so much growing here since some U.S. areas have made it legal. In fact, the drug cartels from Mexico are buying significant amounts from legal Colorado pot shops. Then they distribute them to areas that still consider marijuana illegal. How ironic. Cocaine is a scourge that comes into our nation to infect our population and wreak chaos throughout our land. We do need that Wall President Trump is talking about. More so to cut down on the availability of illegal drugs and the harm to our quality of life. An impenetrable wall would cut down on the traffic significantly. Then we can find a way to detect tunnels that are also used by the cartels. “Build that Wall.” Mr. Alford is the co–founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. An Open Letter To President Donald Trump Part II of II (Continued from last week) Dear Mr. President: In the decade of the 60s deadly violence against Civil Rights advocates was the tenor of the day. Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, John Lewis was beaten within an inch of his life on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, and civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi, advocating for voting rights for “colored” people. Following his election as Governor, George Wallace, the Jeff Sessions of the 60s, famously proclaimed in his inaugural address: “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” I never want to see those days “Again.” The decades of the 70s and 80s witnessed the struggle of the Gay Rights Movement, violence against gays, the explosion of the AIDS epidemic, a failure to ratify a ban on sexual bias, and Reagan vetoed the Civil Rights Restoration Act. I never want to see those days “Again.” In the decade of the 90s the first race riots in decades erupted in South Central Los Angeles after a jury acquitted four white police officers for the videotaped beating of African American Rodney King.

Police brutality became a major issue in America and continued unchecked for another decade. The decade of 2000 produced the first African American president of the United States. The Obama family has been mischaracterized, the president disrespected by members of Congress, the family depicted by thousands of negative caricatures, Barack Obama characterized as a non-U.S. citizen, and treated by the “Birther” movement like a vagabond who needed to show papers to be legit. I never want to see those days “Again.” The decade of 2010 produced a resurgence of Civil Rights era-like protests against police brutality. The human/civil rights activist group “Black Lives Matter,” in 2015 called world attention to police brutality and the heightened protests against the election of the most unprecedented presidential candidate in the history of the nation. Lies, innuendo, bullying, mischaracterizations, name-calling, vulgarity, and interference by foreign governments dominated the election process. The eventual winner, Trump entered the White House with the lowest approval rating of any president-elect in the history of the country. The president-elect was the first not to release tax returns in 40 years. I never want to see those days “Again.” In closing Mr. Trump, I followed your campaign very closely and

I heard all the “Dog Whistles” about you being the “Law and Order” candidate. Gun control as it pertains to assault rifles, is a major issue in America. You reference gun violence when you talk about Chicago and the Black community, but we never hear your position on guns as it refers to white kids shooting up schools and theaters

with assault rifles, killing dozens of young people including 3-yearolds. I saw you campaign in rural “white” America where you promised them jobs and prosperity. You never visited the impoverished Black communities. Your promise to the Black community was to bring law and order to communities, which simply meant you would increase police presence with a mandate to use whatever means necessary. Your Vice President reiterated your pledge at the Donor’s Dinner on Jan 19, to give law enforcement the support and freedom needed to do its job. Your appointment of Jeff Sessions to Attorney General suggests that claims of police brutality would not be addressed. We’re back to the “Bull” Connor days of 1963. I never want to see those days “Again.” I, like Barack Obama, and like those residents of the crime infested Black neighborhoods who have nothing to lose, am a citizen of the United States. I served my country honorably during the Korean War, fought to protect the rights of my fellow white citizens while fighting to help them maintain the oppression of my family and friends. After rotating from Korea back to the U.S., we were in route on a chartered plane to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, to be discharged from the Armed Services. Our plane

set down in the state of Tennessee for some minor repairs, and the 80 passengers, all servicemen in uniform adorned with the 8th Army insignia, went into a restaurant for breakfast. The eight African-American soldiers were told, “We do not serve niggers in here.” I never want to see those days “Again.” When was America at its greatest and when was it at its lowest? According to your rhetoric on the campaign trail the U.S. fell to its lowest level under the Black president, Barack Obama. Nothing could be farther from the truth. You got it wrong about America’s Black communities and you deliberately spoke disparagingly about Barack Obama and his administration. I never want to see those days “Again.” Respect the legislation he put through Congress and if there are flaws in the legislation he was forced to sign under executive privilege, fix it, but let it continue to work for the people of the United States and the world. You are now the president for all Americans and the leader of the free world. Listen to your critics, consider their concerns, put your personal pride and ego aside, face reality, learn from the mistakes of the past and make America better for all its citizens. WE MUST NOT ABANDON BLACK FAMILY LIFE Dr. Conrad Worrill, Professor Emeritus, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS). New office location is at 1809 E. 71st Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-592-2598. Email:cwworrill@neiu.edu Website: www.drconradworrill.com

Dr. Conrad Worrill

Since the early 1900s, Black and white scholars have written much on the Black family. When one examines the card catalogue of any library in America they will find volumes of books, articles and newspaper clippings discussing some aspect of Black family life. What we need in the African American community is a framework to examine and solve the problems of Black family life on our own terms. The capturing of African people, who were placed in chattel slavery in North America, has left some devastating scars on the most basic unit or any group— the family. There is no question that the family has been that unit that provides the basic foundation for any group of people to survive and develop. Families constitute grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and in-laws. Sometimes families extend beyond blood relatives to those persons we bring into our families for whatever

reason. Families function in the context of their racial and ethnic identity. This identity is shaped by the historical and external forces of a given society. Although the problems of the Black family appear to be very complex on the one hand, on the other, the problem is very simple. First of all, African people who were captured and introduced into the western hemisphere as property and commodities were removed from their land and institutional arrangements of African life. Second, this process of white takeover of Black life, through the most brutal form of oppression— the slave trade and the eventual enslavement of African people on the plantations of North America, has been a back breaking experience for our people. Even through our survival techniques have been superior, in the face of brutal psychological and physical violence against us, we are now at the crossroads. We face the challenge of pre-

serving some of the traditions of the Black family, developed by our ancestors, who fought so hard against racism and white supremacy in this country. This must be done, in part, through the continuing African Centered Education Movement. As our renowned ancestor and deep thinker Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers explained, African Centered Education should focus on the following: 1. Advocates that restoring the historical truth about Africa is the priority for African thinkers (including Africans in the Diaspora). 2. Holds that there is a distinct universal African World View which should be the foundation for all African intellectual development. 3. Involves the massive education or rather re-education of the African people of the world from an African perspective in the interest of African people and directed by African thinkers. It is a necessary pre-condition for the

freedom of the African mind and subsequently African liberation. We must not abandon family life. It is the basis for our survival and development. It is the strategy of the white supremacy system to place so much pressure on us that we give up our fight for independence and freedom. When the family unit begins to wither away, we must rise to the occasion and fight to keep its basic elements alive in our communities. It is the duty of all Black people to understand that we are faced with a genocidal set of circumstances in America. Look around our communities and what do we /you see? We witness the absence of that fighting family spirit among us that has been so much a part of Black family life. The family is the support mechanism for all that we do and it is a sacred institution that we must preserve and protect on our own terms.

The Grit and Grace of Coretta Scott King By Julianne Malveaux Every day that he holds the Presidency, Donald Trump does something outrageous. He blusters, he just plain lies, and he bullies. He pushes his decisions, his executive orders, down the throats of a Congress that he dominates. Why not let the democratic process work and let them vote to build a wall and pay for it, instead of insisting, by executive order, that the wall will be built. In just one short week as President, he has demeaned our democracy and our voters, caused international turmoil, and more. But he is doing exactly what he said he would do. We’ve been here before. Remember Ronald Reagan, the President who cut school lunches and declared ketchup a vegetable? Remember warmonger George W. Bush? Remember Richard Nixon and his coldness toward Coretta Scott King? Remember history! Journalist Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds offers us the opportunity to remember history in the Coretta Scott King memoir, My Life, My Love, My Legacy. Reynolds took copious notes and made extensive recordings in the decades that she worked and travelled with Coretta King, and she has turned 6

them into a memoir. Completed in 2007, it has taken a decade for the book to be published, largely because of complications with the King estate. But Reynolds chooses not to talk about the complications, instead choosing to talk about the many ways her life was enriched and enhanced by her association with Mrs. King. She also chooses to illuminate the leadership roles that Mrs. King embraced, both while her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was living, and after his death. The book is a great and inspirational read, especially now, when so many have despaired at the irrational-seeming leadership of Donald Trump. It is a reminder that it took 15 years of persistence to establish the King holiday that we now all take for granted. It is easy to forget that Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) introduced the King Holiday legislation in 1968, just days after Dr. King’s assassination. He introduced it again and again, year after year. According to Coretta King, the bill was rejected more than seventy times. But she, and Conyers, persisted in their efforts to create a national holiday. Coretta King met with the reformed segregationist Senator Robert Byrd. She says she would have been “anxious” to meet with a

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2017

Dr. Julianne Malveaux man who filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Bill, but was assured that his views had changed. Indeed, Byrd supported the effort to establish the King holiday, but through a rules change, a two-thirds vote was needed to establish a holiday instead of a simple majority. In 1979, the bill lost by a mere five votes. Agitation continued after this loss. A petition drive yielded six million signatures. Stevie Wonder released his Happy Birthday song that advocated

for a King holiday. Senator Jesse Helms opposed the holiday, introducing a 300-page document that detailed King’s “Communist activities.” Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan was so outraged by the document that he threw it to the ground, describing it as a “packet of filth.” On October 19, 1983, the Senate passed King holiday legislation 78-22, following a House vote of 338-90. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law on November 3, 1983, establishing the King holiday on the third Monday of January, beginning in 1986. Of course, some states dragged their feet. Arizona did not acknowledge the holiday until the NFL moved a Super Bowl in protest in 1992. South Carolina waited until 2000 to acknowledge the holiday. We often see Coretta Scott King as a stoic, dignified lady, and a graceful partner to civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King. This memoir shows her from another perspective, as a leader in her own right, as a dedicated pacifist, as a persistent adherent to principles of nonviolence, as a gritty fighter for her husband’s legacy through the holiday and the establishment of the King Center. We also see her as a mother, and can read her assessment of her children, their strengths and their challenges.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

While I had the privilege to be in Mrs. King’s company on many occasions, and to speak with her personally and at length more than once, this book adds a depth to my knowledge of her and makes me wish I’d had the opportunity to know the side of her that laughed with Betty Shabazz and Myrlie Evers (I laughed with both of those women, but never Coretta), enjoyed opera, and let her hair down. As we attempt to develop the “fight back” plan for the outrageousness of the Trump presidency, it is useful to consider the women on whose shoulders we stand – Fannie Lou Hamer, Ida B. Wells, Shirley Chisholm and so many others. And it is useful to remember the grit and grace of Coretta Scott King, the power and passion in her persistence. For me, this book put steel in my spine. The Trump years will be a long four years, but imagine waiting 17 years to establish a King holiday that is now so widely celebrated! Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. El Trumpo keeps threatening to send in the feds and coming to Chicago to solve the violence problem and the Mare says come on!! He probably will come, which is more than our own President did. Well Ima will take that back he did come to announce his program My Brother’s Keeper. By the way is it still operating?? But Jesse, Commissioner Boykin and Father Pfleger as well as other Black leaders begged President Obama to call for a summit and to come help us here in

Chief Eddie Johnson pounds or so. By the way the Mare ain’t wearing no cast on his arm is he??? That’s a lot of beef to try to catch. -Ima-

Comm. Richard Boykin it would be labeled a MIRACLE!! Ima got a bit carried away I guess,

A SAD DAY It was a real sad day when the Bank regulators came in and closed Seaway Bank. The closing leaves us with only one bank, owned by Ghanaians, Illinois Service Federal Savings and Loan. While it was sad, it was not unexpected. Folks are pointing fingers at various ones, but the truth be told, the bank no longer serviced its community. The president was labeled bourgeoisie. Now Ima don’t know cause she don’t run in dem circles, but Ima knows that she may have thought that white ice was colder and the salvation of the bank would come to being when they placed advertising in the Unsunny Times, but not in Black newspapers. Den she had some highfalooting event highlighting successful Black women. Ima knows for sure some of those ladies are on the brink of disaster themselves. Ima hates that sometimes our lessons are so hard to take, but some folks don’t listen. A guy who heads up an organization that works with financial institutions said dey had lost touch with their community. Was that because dey didn’t deal with him and his organization? Or was this a fact? Mmmmmmmm

the little special Baron to continue at the school he is in now. Howsanever, some folks speculate Melania likes the idea that she is in New York and “Wheathead,” I mean Mr. Trump is in Washington. At least she don’t have to put up with Trump’s doing things like he said in the Access Hollywood tape, you know pull her by her p . . . y. Ima knows ain’t nothing

The scare that Police Chief Eddie Johnson put us all through last week still has some folks shaking in their boots. But low and behold I seed the boy back on television this week trying to read a statement. He still can’t read, so the scare didn’t mess up his reading, but the Super better start thinking about himself and take better care of himself ‘cause who knows how long it will be before he gets the kidney he said he needs. So Ima ain’t gonna make no jokes ‘bout this, well maybe one. The Super could have been really hurt, what with the light in the pants Mare trying to catch him when he became unsteady. Thank goodness he didn’t have to catch all of dem 300

The Black citizens of Chicago have been bamboozled again. In November Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that the Chicago Police Department was accepting applications for the April 2017 police exam, especially Blacks. They went so far as to hire a Black agency to head up the search with a campaign called “Be the Change.” It sure was a change!!! Where were the outreach efforts? I remember hearing about some kind of promotion at WVON, but after that I could not tell you where they looked to recruit applicants. I can tell you that they did not advertise in any Black newspaper, which would be a natural if you were looking for “Black” police recruits. I can’t say Ima has ever heard of any shady dealings of the agency that was hired, but I think in this case it warrants an investigation. Just where did the agency go to recruit Black applicants, how much of the money awarded with the contract was spent in outreach or was it used for administrative costs like salaries of the agency employees? Just asking???

we say then?? Sure will close a lot of President Donald Trump said folks’ mouths, but the citizens of he’s coming to Chicago in two Chicago would be most grateful!! And weeks for a sit down with gangs who reportedly wants to work with his administration in curbing the murder rate in the city, according to a conversation the president had with Black religious leaders at a listening session at the White House on Wednesday, Feb.1. The Black History Month meeting was heavily criticized after Trump was accused of making the occasion about himself as several Black cabinet members participated in the conversation. They included HUD Secretary and former Republican presidential canRev. Jesse Jackson Sr. didate Ben Carson and former re-

ality television star Omarosa Manigault, now The White House director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison. The conversation turned to Chicago as Pastor Darrell Scott of New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland, OH said he was recently contacted by gangs who reached out to him because they associate the pastor with the Trump administration. Scott said the gang members love what Trump is doing and respect him. He said the gang members want to talk to Trump about “lowering the body count” in Chicago. “They want to work with this administration,” Scott said of the gangs. “They believe in this administration. They didn’t believe

in the prior administration. They told me this out of their mouth. But they see hope with you.” Trump told Scott “That’s a great idea because Chicago is totally out of control.” He later said, “If they’re (Chicago) not going to solve the problem – and what you’re doing is the right thing – then we’re going to solve the problem for them because we’re going to have to do something about Chicago. Because what’s happening in Chicago should not be happening in this country.” With January’s murder rate as high as last year, Trump last week threatened federal intervention in Chicago, but city officials opposed the idea.

Volkswagen Continues Efforts to Increase Supplier Diversity By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor) As the Supplier Diversity Manager at the Volkswagen Group of America’s plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., Edkedsha Mathis said she relies on a concept called the three A’s: Aim high, apply yourself and achieve your goals. Mathis, whose supplier diversity position falls under the company’s purchasing department within the Chattanooga Plant location, which employs about 2,800 workers, said that her concept is rooted in the philosophy that credibility is built on results and leaders that achieve by doing and not just advising. “As a young adult venturing into the business world, I had a road map and goals. One year, three years, five years and 10 years,” Mathis said. “That’s something you need to stick to. Make two road maps, one for yourself on a personal level and a professional one to present your leadership as the path that you want to follow.” Mathis continued: “When you are in your evaluations with leadership, you can show them this is where you are and this is where you want to be; advise your leadership that you need their guidance and support to meet these goals.” For Mathis – whom colleagues and family members affectionately call “KeeKee,” – mentoring and offering advice to young women, minorities, and anyone within the diversity community is one of the traits she’s demonstrated as she’s helped Volkswagen’s Supplier Diversity Program remain one of the most successful in the world. Born and raised in Chattanooga, Mathis has been with Volkswagen for eight years and she has more than 20 years of experience in purchasing, which includes supporting as a regional buyer, service buyer, supply chain support, key user for all of the purchasing systems and lean management. Previously, she worked for 13 years as a buyer for the Wrigley Company. “There’s nothing to fear, but fear itself,” she said. “The only barrier between yourself and success is you. No one can stop you from what you want to accomplish, but you.” The powerful principles of diversity and inclusion — which promotes superior performance and competitive advantage — has helped Volkswagen Group of America create an environment where everyone can feel respected and appreciated, company officials said. Mathis said much of her job is spent traveling and engaging with minority and diverse suppliers as executive leaders in the company participate each year in a diversity strategy conference to help shape Volkswagen’s diversity initiative.

Through Volkswagen’s Diversity Outreach initiative, the company has continuously sought opportunities to partner with community and diversity based organizations like the National Urban League, Out and Equal, the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD), the Tri-State Minority Supplier Diversity Council (TSMSDC), National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), and The Chattanooga Chamber. “I closely coordinate with buyers and purchasing managers to ensure we have inclusion of our diverse suppliers within our purchasing processes,” said Mathis. “Diversity represents a different range of categories including minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned and LGBT.” Mathis continued: “And, it’s not only identifying these suppliers, but mentoring and developing them to make sure they have the capabilities needed by Volkswagen.” For instance, Volkswagen’s commitment toward supplier diversity is almost like no other company. If Mathis and, or, other Volkswagen officials find that some minority suppliers don’t possess the capability, Mathis helps to develop those suppliers to gain the experience and ability to become a Volkswagen supplier. “My job is to support them. In most cases [request for quotations] have gone out when we’ve had really small businesses that wanted to participate in the bidding process,” Mathis said. “I may tell them they can go through the process, see what the scope of the work entails, and

“VOLKSWAGEN HAS BEEN working hard so that diversity and inclusion is a part of our day to day business,” said Edkedsha Mathis, the supplier diversity manager at the Volkswagen Group of America’s plant in Chattanooga. (Volkswagen) they will know, in the future, how ful as Volkswagen suppliers and they can build up their capacities to community members. Those tools submit a proper proposal that meets include mentoring, training, feedthe requirements.” back (positive and opportunities for Mathis said that it’s also important improvement), networking, and oneto provide diverse suppliers the tools on-one meetings with responsible and feedback needed to be success- buyers and business units.

Mathis said that participating in the Center of Excellence (COE) at TSMSDC is a great way for suppliers to improve their services by identifying their strengths and weaknesses. She also coordinates several best practices that include increasing supplier diversity program awareness within the organization, working to keep top leadership committed and informed about the importance of the program, mentoring suppliers, and training new and current suppliers. Additionally, Mathis works to build strategic partnerships and alliances with diverse suppliers. “I can help suppliers even if it means partnering with them with a larger business that’s willing to work with them, because a larger business can be used as mentors,” said Mathis. “We are always looking for partners throughout the year and there’s no cut off on identifying such suppliers, which is why I attend trade shows and trade fairs nationally.” At Volkswagen, more than 10 percent of production purchasing has been awarded to minority-owned businesses and 10 percent for nonproduction in 2016. Mathis said there are always opportunities for suppliers, however, they must be properly certified, registered, and be competitive. “Volkswagen has been working hard so that diversity and inclusion is a part of our day to day business,” Mathis said. “At Volkswagen, our goal is to be recognized as a top company for diversity and inclusion practices as part of being a top employer in our city.”

Rep. Ford: “Political warfare in Springfield hurting Blacks” By Chinta Strausberg Gov. Bruce Rauner has made history having blocked passage of a balanced budget in the last 19-months an act Rep. LaShawn Ford (D-8th) says is caused by a “political war” between the Democrats and the Republicans with Blacks caught in the crossfires. “It’s been 19-months since we’ve had a budget because we have a political war going on in Springfield. It’s a war between philosophies… between the Democrats vs. Republicans,” Ford told the Chicago Crusader. “The problem we have is that we have a very powerful governor who controls the Republican party….” When asked how can this impasse end especially since the state comptroller has withheld the legislators pay since last June and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is asking a judge to stop paying state workers, Ford simply said party unity. “A solution to end the budget crisis is to make sure we do a simple budget

Rep. Harry LaShawn C. Alford Ford with both parties agreeing that it is important to fulfill our obligations as members of the General Assembly by voting on a budget that the governor presents. “We are hoping that the governor will present a balanced budget that we can vote on,” said Ford who explained they passed several budgets but Rauner vetoed them with no solution. “He said they were not balanced…. ”

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

After 19-months with no budget, Ford said, “The major problem we are about to face is that children in daycare may be without childcare if there is a government shutdown. “And if that happens, the business community will suffer because parents will not be able to go to work. The universities will lose enrollment because parents will not be able to go to school. It will damage families and the state,” Ford said. “Right now, we are in jeopardy of losing child care in Illinois because if there is no budget and there is a government shutdown, child care will not be funded,” he stated. Referring to Madigan who has filed a lawsuit preventing pay to state works during the budget impasse, Ford said, “If that happens, state workers will be off. There will be no operations on state government. Childcare and senior services would be off…. It would be devastating,” Ford stated. When asked about the legislators not being paid since last June, Ford said they still travel to Springfield

and pay for their lodging without the benefit of a paycheck. “We have been paying agencies without a balanced budget,” he said. Asked about the status of Madigan’s lawsuit, Ford said they should know by February 28th. Asked who is to blame for this crisis, Ford said, “I would think that each of us is to blame for this, but we passed budgets as Democrats but the Republicans are not willing to cooperate unless we cooperate with them.” Explaining, Ford said to pass a budget and get it signed by Rauner the Democrats would have to agree to term limits and making it difficult for every day working families to sue their employers if they get hurt on the job. “Those are the things the Republicans want to do,” said Rep. Ford. “They want to turn Illinois into a red state. Right now, it is a Democratic blue state. Referring to a Republican majority government, Ford said, “It’s clear (Continued on page 14)

Chicago State to pay $4.3 million settlement Amount to get larger after legal fees, interest as school’s financial woes pile up Chicago Crusader staff report One month after settling a whistleblower lawsuit for $1.3 million, Chicago State University on Tuesday, January 31 was ordered to pay $4.3 million to another employee who was fired after he accused the former school’s president of misconduct. That amount includes $3 million from a verdict the jury awarded to James Crowley in 2014. CSU officials delayed paying the $3 million judgement for three years as they appealed the decision, but on Tuesday, January 31, they learned the delay made things much worse for the predominately Black school on the far South Side. On that day, CSU Cook County Judge James McCarthy ordered the school to pay more than $1 million on top of $3 million to make up for the three years of non-payment that prolonged Crowley’s hardships. McCarthy ordered the university to pay the original jury award and legal fees, plus 6 percent interest that accrued for three years since the verdict was given in 2014. CSU must also pay Crowley $250,000 in “front pay” after the judge said it was unreasonable for Crowley to return to his job and make this amount from the three years of loss work time. The $4.3 million does not include CSU’s legal fees over the three-year period. And the settlement cost could get even higher for CSU as the school pays interest on $20,000 monthly installments

until the judgement is paid. During court proceedings that led to the initial $3 million, a panel of three judges found that CSU launched “a campaign designed to both economically harm… and inflict psychological distress upon” Crowley and called school officials’ behavior “thoroughly reprehensible.” The panel suggested then president Wayne Watson and his aides acted with “malice and deceit.” Watson stepped down as president at CSU in 2015. CSU appealed to the Illinois Supreme Court, which declined to hear the case. With no other legal options left, CSU has no choice but to pay the high settlement amount. The school spokesperson, Sabrina Land released a statement in regards to the settlement. “The University continues to express its disappointment with the 2014 verdict. Our highest priority is to focus on productive and important matters such as our students, staff and university options. The award is a vindication for Crowley, who in news reports said he worked temporary jobs since filing a whistleblower lawsuit under Illinois new state ethics act. Crowley claims that he was fired as the school’s attorney after he refused to withhold documents about Watson’s employment. Those documents were requested by a faculty member under the open records law. In addition, Crowley claimed that

OBAMA LIBRARY UPDATE

Foundation considers closing roads in Jackson Park for Library The Obama Foundation is considering closing parts of Cornell Drive to create a pedestrian campus around the future $500 million Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park, according to news reports.

The facility will be located between 60th and 63rd streets just off Stony Island. Officials are considering closing Cornell Drive between 60th and 67th streets. The roadway closing would allow visitors to stroll

from the presidential center to the Museum of Science and Industry, the Wooded Island nature site and the upgraded golf course. Officials want to create a museum campus similar to the one that in-

cludes the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium on the southern end of Grant Park. There are also talks to close Marquette Drive between Cornell and

Lake Shore Drive. The route is the southern portion of the park and bisects the Jackson Park Golf Course. Officials say the move could help them design a tournament-worthy course. Activists have expressed concerns that closing Cornell Drive will cause more traffic on Stony Island Avenue. Many use Marquette Drive as a connecting route to Lake Shore Drive. LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS CHOSEN Obama Foundation officials on Monday, January 30 named New York-based Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates as the head landscape architects for the library. Award-winning Educator to lead new NNPA Education Campaign By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor) Dr. Elizabeth Primas has faced many difficult and diverse challenges head on. It’s that direct approach that has helped her to excel as the Director of Literacy and Acceleration at the Friendship Public Charter Schools; her record of excellence is bolstered by a history of achievement in teaching and leadership within D.C. Public Schools, area colleges and universities and national education organizations. Whether teaching students or coaching peers, she’s always found the right touch. Now, Dr. Primas is set to take on a new challenge. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), a trade group that represents 211 Black-owned media companies, has selected Primas to be the project manager for the new ESSA/NNPA Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant designed for work focused on increasing public awareness about the unique opportunities and challenges of the recently enacted Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The multimedia educational campaign is supported by a three-year, $1.5

million investment from the Gates Foundation. “Being named project manager is a great honor. I am looking forward to continuing my interest and commitment to assisting in providing quality educational opportunities to ‘my children,’” said Primas. “‘My children’ are all of the children in schools that have been underserved, undereducated, and for all intent and purposes, forgotten about.” A native Washingtonian, Primas’ list of teaching credentials spans more than two decades and includes stints at the University of the District of Columbia and George Washington University. She founded two literacy and computer camps for children in Prince George’s County Public Housing and was the DCPS Director of Literacy: Reading and English Language Arts. Primas said that the ESSA grant award is especially important, because the NNPA remains as relevant today as it was decades ago, long before the newspaper industry changed. “Media has suffered recently, but the NNPA is made up of community papers — community papers that are still very relevant to the audience they serve,” said Primas.

“The Gates Foundation recognized that the African-American newspapers were strategically located and are uniquely qualified to educate the very stakeholders that ESSA is aimed at helping.” And, that’s where Primas’ vast experience is expected to shine. Over the years, Primas has received a plethora of honors for outstanding teaching, including Masonic Scottish Rites Elementary Educator Excellence Award; the Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award; and the District of Columbia’s Teach of the Year. A graduate of the D.C. Teacher’s College who holds a master’s degree from Trinity College and a doctorate from George Washington University, Primas has worked with several organizations such as the National Council of Teachers in English and the International Reading Association’s Urban Diversity Commission and coordinated major conferences on contemporary topics in literary and reading. She’s also a well-known consultant for city schools, textbook companies and the international professional development of teachers. Primas said that there are several deliverables that have already been

Dr.Harry Elizabeth C. Alford Primas identified in the proposal for the ESSA grant that includes providing training seminars, holding or participating in town hall meetings, producing and distributing articles and establishing a website or electronic landing page that will allow the public to access current information relating to the progress of the implementation of the ESSA grant. “I will also be looking for accountability from all NNPA participants,” Primas said. “That means to me, collecting and archiving articles that demonstrate the efforts nationally. I will be

working with the NNPA to assist all members of NNPA in organizing a gathering of the information that needs to be disseminated to the communities. My goal is simply for the NNPA to become a resource for its members, which will allow the individual publications to better serve their communities.” Primas said the ESSA is primarily focused on closing the achievement gap for minorities. While each law before it focused on improving education, ESSA allows for the state and local school districts to determine what’s needed for all their students to be successful. “We’re no longer thinking one size fits all,” she said. “The assessment and accountability can now be locally created. ESSA ends the federal mandate on teacher evaluations and local districts set their own guidelines for teacher accountability.” Primas continued: “I think it’s also important to note that we must keep our eyes and ears open as there are already talks of trying to dismantle parts of ESSA that specifically speak to civil rights and equality. NNPA must help communicate the opportunities and challenges that affect our community.”

Alicia Bowens becomes a mentor for mothers everywhere By Dana Rettig CEO of Bowens Enterprises and author, Alicia Bowens, knows what it’s like to struggle at a young age. During her younger years, Alicia took on various family responsibilities and although described as a quiet person found ways to act out her frustrations. Bowens’ behavior eventually led to her becoming a teenage mother. Today the founder of two companies and a very successful IT professional with many other titles to her name, Bowens is determined to lead other teenage moms to success. “In the United States, there are ten million mother-led families

and 20 percent of families are headed by single mothers,” Bowens said. “Forty percent of babies are born to single mothers in the United States.” Bowens went on to achieve accomplishments in her life however, it wasn’t until she forgave herself did her life really soar. “I never forgave myself for my actions. Once I forgave myself, I started to go further in life,” she said. “Writing Millionaire M.O.M. was important because I felt that my story and the stories of the others would inspire readers to reach for success.” Bowens and a few of her friends decided to come together and write their narratives based on

their experience as teenage mothers, struggling to raise their family alone. “L.O.V.E. for Teen Mothers was the first book I wrote, sharing my experience as a teenage mother. I was inspired to do so because of the negativity around being a teen mother regarding the false belief that when you have a baby at such a young age, your life is over,” she explained, solemnly. “I wanted to share my story in an effort to let young mothers know that success is still possible for them. I was even more inspired to write my new book, Millionaire M.O.M. because I wanted to provide a source of encouragement for adult mothers as well. Millionaire M.O.M. AUTHOR ALICIA BOWENS has collaborated with other successful women who were once teenage mothers to write a book to encourage young mothers to set higher goals and achieve greatness.

PHOTOGRAPHED TOGETHER ARE nine of the twelve successful women who contributed their life experiences to the book “Millionaire M.O.M.”

(which means Mothers on a Mission) is an anthology consisting of twelve teenage mothers turned entrepreneurs and communal activists. They all share their experiences and life lessons, but the one thing that they all have in common is that it was their mindsets that they had to overcome in order to achieve success. All mothers can relate to it.” Though it took a while to complete the book, Alicia Bowens and a few others were determined to display their gift and life for the world to read, admire and respect. “As the lead author of the book, it was my duty to recruit and select the contributing authors, coordinate events based on availability, collect, and compile authors’ chapter submissions, and lead the marketing direction,” she said, explaining the process of releasing the book. “The concept of the book came to me back in 2014, however, I didn’t start promoting the idea and recruiting authors

until mid-2015. The book was released that November, with a launch the month after,” she said, adding: “The welfare system treats teenage and single mothers as a lost cause. There needs to be a component that helps to empower people to get off of assistance.” When Alicia Bowens isn’t working, she is active in community activities focused on solving problems within society. Bowens said, “I teach Sunday school for young adults at New Faith Baptist Church International in Matteson, IL. Also, I volunteer with Brown Sons Empowered, and I’m a member of the National Black MBA Association.” What is Alicia’s suggestion for teenage and single mothers facing obstacles, raising families? “Focus on the solution. I’d also tell them to reach out to someone that they can trust for help or advice, be open to hearing the honest truth and be courageous enough to take action.”

His policies are clearly harmful to working families and those seeking work.” Overall, Ford described the fiscal crises as unprecedented. “In the 200 years we’ve been a state, we’ve never had this problem. The biggest jump was the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts, whose 24,980 visitors represented a whopping 56 percent increase. Nearly 16 million visitors attended Chicago’s museums and zoos in 2016. The numbers reflect a successful year for Chicago museums, which set attendance records for 2016. The figures are even higher than 2015, when most of the museums had smaller attendance gains. For the DuSable, the increase is an inspiring rebound from 2015, where attendance dropped by 15 percent. The rebound is perhaps the first sign of success under CEO Perri Irmer, a

prominent Chicago attorney who was hired in September 2015 to boost DuSable’s attendance and memberships. According to the Museum of the Parks, DuSable’s rebound in 2016 is attributed to a number of year-round programs and the special “watch party” that celebrated the opening of the new, 400,000 square foot Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened last September amid huge crowds after months of unprecedented donations from Black celebrities. In just four months since the opening, nearly 750,000 visitors have passed through the five story structure near the Washington Monument. Free, timed passes to the museum have been hard to obtain and

have been “sold out” since museum officials began distributing them to control overwhelming crowds. As of Tuesday, January 31, visitors who want to see the museum will have to wait until May. Passes for visits during that month were made available Wednesday, February 1. During the “watch party” at the DuSable Museum, it was standing room only as visitors viewed as President Barack Obama opened the NMAAHC museum with Founding Director and Chicago native Lonnie Bunch. After the party, visitors flooded the DuSable’s staff inquiring about memberships to the museum in Washington Park. The DuSable has year-round membership that includes a membership to the NMAAHC.

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe It’s a heart thing. “Man looks on the outward appearance but God looks at the heart” is found in 1 Samuel 16:7 and it is a favorite scripture that has often been quoted. Another passage that helps to examine the heart is the prodigal’s son in Luke 15:1132. As the parable goes, the younger son wanted to skip the process. He wanted to fast-forward the normal procedure and demanded that his father bequeath his inheritance immediately. Although, this was not the norm then or now, the father willingly acquiesced to his son’s wishes allowing the youngster to have his fair share. Just as God has a perfect plan for each of us, nevertheless, he will not force his love on anyone. You must willingly receive. As the story continues, after living a loose life and squandering his money, the naïve and spoiled brat lost his money quicker than a lottery winner. Eventually, he came to his senses, return home, beg his father for forgiveness and hopefully live as one of

his hired servants. When he got to his father’s house, before he could speak, his father saw him afar out and ran to receive him. What unconditional love. Even when we intentionally mess up and act crazy, God’s love never fails. Luke 15:2-24 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to celebrate.’ Regardless of the insult of asking for his inheritance, the tremendous shame he caused his family by his worldly lifestyle—the father looked beyond his son’s selfish, disgraceful and immature behavior to extend genuine love and rejoicing. Faults are like headlights—you always see someone else’s first. It’s so easy for us to point the finger. Unfortunately, most of us forget that whether seen or unseen—you—me—we and I have issues. No one is perfect. “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one (Romans 3:10). Even the eldest

Effie Rolfe

son had a fit and was disgusted by both his father and younger brother’s (the prodigal son’s) actions. Tradition was for the eldest to receive the inheritance first. Also, he couldn’t understand why his father was so quick to go beyond the call of duty to embrace his younger brother after he had willfully brought shame to the family. The father spoke to the older brother and said, “…Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found (Luke 15:1132).” The real joy in discussing this passage of scripture is God genuinely loves and delights in us in spite of our selfishness, mistakes and outright rebellion. In fact, He adores and honors the household of faith by giving us abundant life and the desires of our heart. Because God is a gentleman, you must receive His love willingly. He doesn’t even require you to earn forgiveness because it’s free. It’s a blessing to know that our Heavenly Father loves you and me without compro-

mise. Now this is what we call free love. Although, there are consequences to disobedience—in the end, God’s love remains. Thus, I have no need to be envious, jealous, judgmental or unmerciful about your missteps and actions nor you of mine. God longs for us to be in His presence. Once we realize it, there is nothing God won’t do to make it your reality. God’s grace and love paid for our disgrace. We can trust him to have mercy on our misery. He only asks that you too allow love to flow unconditionally within your heart. Galentine’s Day is the Real Valentine’s Day for Girlfriends Time to Celebrate the Power of Female Friendships and Your Sister Besties While most are readying for Valentine’s Day, lifelong BFFs of The Force of Friendship (FOF) see February 13, Galentine’s Day, as the real holiday. For them, it’s yet another opportunity to empower, uplift and celebrate their more than 30-year friendship. Friendship for these seven women is not coincidental or contrived. It is honest sisterly love that bears all

things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Throughout the more than 30-year friendship, the women have experienced the pendulum from joy to pain that life can bring. Successful careers. International travel. Marriage. Motherhood. Divorce. Abuse. Death. Yet through it all, they remain a solid support system for each other, providing encouragement and consoling, and say their bond continually deepens. Experts say that although friendship is one of the most critical ele(Continued on page 16)

Galentine’s Day is the Real Valentine’s Day for Girlfriends (Continued from page 15) ments of our lives, it also is the most least understood. Laura-Miller explains in Ebony, “Women were created to have confidants. It has been studied and verified in the Harvard Medical Journal that there is healing power when women seek friendship and sisterhood...” “A good friend knows your best stories and a best friend has lived them with you,” explains Caterina Harris Earl in “The Force of Friendship: 100 Powerful Inspirations,” the new book she co-authored with her six besties. “While it seems as if it is so hard for us to find the time to connect, when we do – it’s magical. Friends remind you of who you really are. They have a way of giving you wings to fly when you are feeling defeated and help keep you humble when you are a little too full of yourself.” “I have always believed that you become most like the people with whom you choose to spend your time,” FOF girlfriend Gloria Mayfield Banks shares in her inspirational message. “People can have a great influence on us. That is why we must choose our circle of influence wisely.” Having such a special, longlasting friendship between sev-

en women led Nora ShariffBorden to recommend to her six BFFs that they formalize their relationship by forming The Force of Friendship. “What I love about having a friendship with these amazing women is that we inspire each other and travel the world together, all while bringing laughter and joy to each other’s lives,” remarks Shariff-Borden. “Our love for each other inspired us to write this book of inspirations, which we hope will inspire people everywhere, especially women, to live your dreams, own your power, and find friendships as meaningful and beautiful as ours.” The seven girlfriends formed the Force of Friendship to spur a national movement among women and girls to empower, encourage and celebrate each other. “The Force of Friendship: 100 Powerful Inspirations” is a 100-page collection of quick and easily digestible daily affirmations written by all seven girlfriends that covers such topics as faith, mindset, leadership, courage, success, belief, love, dream, fear, and of course, friendship. In addition to the book, the FOF circle of friendship is conducting webinars and touring the country to help motivate and show women how to make friends, how to be a good

friend, as well as how to nurture and cultivate good friendships with girlfriends that are free of cattiness and drama. Their “Rock Your World with Courageous Girlfriends” webinar provided insights on: developing quality friendships in a new city; balancing personal and business friendships; supporting a friend through singleness, divorce, and abuse; and comforting and supporting friends who are caregivers. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ing a news conference last week most Chicagoans were very concerned as well as surprised. We were concerned, of course, about his health. It was the same issue that surprised us. Of course health issues are very personal, but for some reason, those of high profile individuals, especially those on the public dole, leak out. Maybe it is too much exposure to government, at many levels, but Chicago in particular, that has caused me to become such a cynic. Let me give you an example. When Mr. Johnson explained the next day that he took medication on an empty stomach, and that made him lightheaded; my mind raced back to when he was appointed, It was during that first week as super Mr. Johnson said in his 27-year CPD he had never witnessed police misconduct. It was right then and there that I knew I could never believe another word that came out the man’s mouth. I know 16

(Continued from page 4) right now people are feeling sorry for him because he is on the list for a kidney transplant. I have had friends and family who also needed a transplant. So, I know waiting can be nerve wracking. On that front, I empathize with the Johnson family. Every legitimate medical professional will tell you that stress is one of the factors that can cause a medical condition to get worse. I have to believe that with the community’s lack of confidence in the police department, the U.S. Department of Justice that essentially called CPD a cesspool of misconduct and folks with little to no regard of Black people’s lives are put before him Mr. Johnson experiences an enormous amount of stress. The previous superintendent didn’t have a heart attack because the job was stress-free. It was quite the contrary. Mr. Johnson shared with the news media that after the transplant, he would be off

the job for up to six weeks. Six weeks in government is an incredibly long time. The whole department could go south in that time. Mr. Johnson is looking at six weeks if the operation goes perfectly and there are no post-surgery complications. Those are factors that no one can predict. And how long will it take him to get back up to speed after he has been gone that long? Really, there is no upside to him staying around and coming back after surgery. It seems it would be in everyone’s best interest, especially the mayor who claims such admiration for his superintendent, to encourage him to resign. The quarterof-a-million dollar salary Mr. Johnson is pulling down now will hardly seem worth it if he stays on and his health deteriorates. Mr. Johnson needs to hang out the “gone fishing” sign and end his career on a high note. Terri Pate
