Giannoulias, Preckwinkle Win By J. Coyden Palmer La Risa Lynch Newcomer Cheryle Jackson finished last in her bid to win the Democratic primary in the U.S. Senate race. Jackson lost to state Treasurer and friend of President Barrack Obama Alexi Giannoulias. Jackson got 19.7 percent of the vote; finishing behind former city inspector David Hoffman (33.8 %) and Giannoulias (39%). Giannoulias will face Republican candidate Representative Mark Kirk and Green Party candidate LeAlan M. Jones in the general election in November. Jackson temporarily left her position as head of the Chicago Urban League to run for the senate seat vacated by President Obama’s election in 2008. Roland Burris was named as the person to serve out the remainder of Obama’s term by former governor Rod Blagojevich. But the circumstances surrounding his appointment caused such a backlash among potential voters that Burris decided not to run for reelection. Jackson is not the lone hope for keeping the seat filled by a member of the

women and African Americans, according to Sun-Time s columnist Mary Mitchell, despite being the lone woman and African American in the race. Others say Jackson’s lack of experience as an elected official played a role. Most people only knew Jackson as a former spokes-

person for Blagojevich and her work with the Chicago Urban League. Because she had never run for political office, many people did not know her. “This isn’t the time to elect a person to one of the highest offices in the country who has never served before,” said African American Shawn Newton. “I think what our Black politicians need to understand is that the younger generation of Black voters won’t vote for you just because you are Black, or a democrat for that matter, like our parents and grandparents did. We are more diverse as a people than ever before and that old way of political thinking has to die out before we can move forward.” Jackson also was hurt by a low voter turnout. Only 25 percent of registered voters in Chicago came out on Election Day, further hampering the efforts of Jackson. Despite the disappointing outcome, Jackson was upbeat during her concession speech. “Tonight we are here for a different kind of victory,” she told her supporters. “Maybe not the victory we wanted but I (Continued on page 3)

Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands Rum War threatens economic ruin By Pharoh Martin NNPA National Correspondent WASHINGTON (NNPA) - A war is brewing between two of America’s island territories in the Caribbean. It is a fight that is developing over rum subsidies. And while the governments of Puerto Rico and

the U.S. Virgin Islands are not trading bullets per se, their barbs and legislative battles threaten to unravel at least one of their fragile economies and the way the rum industry does business. Advocates on both sides say this is not a “Brown verses Black issue.” Rather, they describe it as a war for economic vitality.

Delegate Donna Christensen, the U. S. Congressional representative from the Virgin Islands says the dispute could ultimately collapse the Virgin Island’s economy and more. “I think this dispute could result in damaging the relationship between the two governments if it continues to go on because what they propose to do would really destroy the Virgin Island economy,” Christensen said. “If they were to prevail, the Virgin Island’s economy would just crumble.” The territories are in a dispute over how much they are able to subsidize rum producers using federal excise tax revenues. Puerto Rico argues that their sister territo-

ry, the Virgin Islands, is using excise tax revenues from rum sales to make the kind of deals that amount to, essentially, unfair trading practices that will distort the market. This is the background: For decades, the federal government taxed rum producers on each proof gallon of their alcohol entering the U.S. But Congress initiated a cover-over program that rebates all but 25 cents of rum excise tax revenues back to the U.S. territory that produced the rum. The federal program generates hundreds of millions of dollars annually in economic aid for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. (Continued on page 3)

National Urban League leads historic delegation of African-Americans to Beijing China Trip represents beginning of new relationship between African-Americans and the Chinese people By Jasmyne A. Cannick NNPA, Foreign Correspondent Special Report From Beijing, China BEIJING, CHINA - President and CEO of the National Urban League, Marc H. Morial and Los Angeles Urban League President and CEO Blair Taylor has led a 40-person delegation to the Beijing, in the People’s Republic of China for a cultural and trade mission hopefully signaling the beginning of a new relationship between the Chinese people and African-Americans. The historic trip is meant to engage in the first of many meaningful discussions on possibilities of future partnerships and investment between the Chinese and African-Americans. It is the first time a national delegation of African-Americans of this size has visited Beijing on such a mission. Since the election of President Barack Obama, the Chinese people have taken an interest in African-Americans in the U.S. leaders in exploring and developing ways that African-Americans and Chinese can do business and exchange cultural and educational ideas. Los Angeles Urban League President and CEO Blair Taylor, in 2006, took a 12-member delegation to China on such a mission to visit Beijing and Shanghai. This mission continues and broadens that effort. “This delegation represents ‘our best’ in business, entrepreneurship, banking and finance, education, sports, entertainment, media and political thought,” commented Mr. Morial.

Notable members of the 40person delegation to Beijing include: Blair Taylor, President and CEO, Los Angeles Urban League, Danny Bakewell Sr., Chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) which represents over 200 Black newspaper publishers in the United States, Robert J. Brown, Chairman and CEO of B&C Associates, Inc., former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater, James Buford, President and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan, St. Louis, Thomas Sayles, Vice President for Government and Community Relations for the University of Southern California, Albert Dotson Jr., President of 100 Black Men of America, Mark Mallory, Mayor of Cincinnati, Carl Ballton, President and COO, Union Bank Foundation, Dr. Franklin D. Gilliam Jr., Dean, UCLA School of Public Affairs, and Carl Dickerson, CEO of Dickerson Employee Benefits. In addition, the National Urban League has brought along journalists Michelle Miller from CBS News, TVOne’s Roland S. Martin, and the NNPA foreign correspondent Jasmyne A. Cannick, to tell accurately the story of this historic trip back home in the US. The delegates departed Newark, NJ on Jan. 30 on a 14-hour flight to Beijing and received an extremely warm welcome at the airport from host organization the China-United States Exchange Foundation and were escorted to the Grand Hotel Beijing. After checking in, the delegates were escorted to a grand reception and dinner at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse hosted by Tung Chee-hwa, founding chairman of the China-United States Exchange Foundation. Chairman Tung Chee-hwa was delighted with the Urban League’s visit and interest in China and said he

Puerto Rico-Virgin . . . (Continued from page 1) To combat record deficits facing the Virgin Islands, territorial governor John deJongh looked to leveraging business deals tied to cover-over revenues. deJongh cut deals with two producers that make some of the world’s topselling rum brands to create public-private enterprises. Londonbased Diageo, LLC, which produces Captain Morgan Rum, is ending a subcontractor relationship it has in Puerto Rico in 2012 and is relocating to the Virgin Islands where it will remain for the next 30 years and receive subsidy incentives worth up to half of the cover-over revenue that the U.S. Virgin Islands receives. Fortune Brands, which produces locally-based brand Cruzan recently received a similar deal. The deal threatens Puerto Rico, which as the world leader in rum production is losing not only the number two rum brand in Captain Morgan, but also maintains the high subsidies that Diageo is receiving from the Virgin Islands undercuts stability of the entire rum industry. U.S. territories are free to use revenues from the cover-over program as they see fit, for now. Virgin Island leaders argue that the deal not only brings badly needed revenue and jobs to their struggling island but that it also keeps leading rum producers on U.S. soil. Diageo could not renegotiate favorable terms with their third-party manufacturer in Puerto Rico and was preparing to move production of its Captain Morgan brand to a foreign country but instead struck a lucrative deal with the Virgin Islands worth $2.4 billion dollars in direct subsidies and other incentives that include tax breaks, brand promotion and a $165 million dollar local distillery. Virgin Island leaders hold that the agreements have already saved 2000 jobs and will create hundreds more. The deal is forecasted to bring in an estimated six billion dollars in revenue for the tiny island over the 30-year agreement. “Our position is that there is a rum industry in both territories,” said Congressman Pedro Pierluisi (D- P.R.), Puerto Rico’s delegate to congress. “And the way it should work is that the rum producers compete with each other based on the quality of their products and their prices. The issue is that the Virgin Islands opted to use the cover-over funding to give exaggerated and purely unreasonable subsidies to individual producers and that makes no sense.” The Puerto Rican delegate said that the Virgin Island’s subsidies The Chicago Crusader

are so large that, in the case of Diageo, the rum producer could manufacture a gallon of rum free of cost. “It distorts the whole market,” he explained. “If the federal government looks the other way, does nothing and allows this to happen, the odious result is that producers would be seeking similar subsidies because it’s the only way that they could compete.” Decades ago, Puerto Rico legislated a self-imposed cap on itself so that no more than ten percent of cover-over revenue would fund subsidies, and would prevent “abuse” by producers seeking unreasonable subsidies, Periluisi said. And while federal law sets no such limits Periluisi is proposing a federal bill in congress that would do just that. Pierluisi maintains that the domino has already fallen because the Virgin Island’s other subsidy agreement with makers of the locally-produced Cruzan Rum was a result of the rum manufacturer looking for a deal similar to the one Diageo received. “Any producer coming to either territory is going to ask for the same kind of deal,” he said. “It makes no sense. Both territories will end up losing about half of their excise tax cover-over revenues just to give subsidies to individual producers. That cannot be the purpose of the program. It has to do with the industry. It shouldn’t work this way.” Puerto Rico received about $371 million dollars from the excise tax in 2008. Whereas, the Virgin Islands receive just under $100 million dollars in the same year, according to public records. “It’s a big discrepancy because they have so much more money,” argues Congresswoman Donna Christensen (D-V.I.), U.S. Virgin Island’s congressional delegate. “So ten percent for them is a lot of money. It’s four times plus what we can subsidize ours for.” HR 2122, a bill that Pierluisi introduced last April, would cap the amount that territorial governments could use cover-over tax revenues to subsidize private entities to no more than 10 percent. “The bill that I’ve proposed puts a limit of ten percent but I am not fixed on that number,” Pierluisi said. “It could be a higher amount but, again, it cannot be fifty percent of the excise tax, which ends up being the cost of a gallon of rum. I’m just trying to protect the market, protect the industry and make sure that there is a level playing field.” Pierluisi said that because the cover-over revenue is based on production the Virgin Islands

She said who knows what tomorrow may bring and some suspect she could be gearing up for a local run for some sort of city office next year. Another race too close to call is the state’s comptroller office. David Miller left his post as state representative of the 29th District to run for Dan Hynes’ old seat. Miller will be the second African-American to hold the comptroller’s office since U.S. Senator Roland Burris’ 1978 election to that office should he win in November. Miller is to face Republican nominee Judy Barr Topinka in the November General Election. The comptroller’s office has been under fire lately over its role in the Burr Oaks Cemetery plot reselling scandal. Robin Kelly, chief of staff to State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias won her race to succeed him. Kelly received 57.9 percent of the vote to Oberman’s 42.1. The treasurer’s office has also been mired in controversy about strategies it took with its college investment plan that lost millions of dollars. The controversy has been a thorn in Giannoulias’ campaign for the U.S. senate race. Joseph Berrios easily beat out his three opponents for the Cook County’s Assessor Office. Since Assessor James Houlihan opted not to run for re-election, the open seat attracted a bevy of takers including Robert Shaw and Ray Figueroa. Berrios won the seat with 39.9 percent of the votes. Shaw, a former 9th Ward alderman and Board of Review commissioner, garnered 34 percent while Figueroa had 26.9 percent. 3

OPINION

HAITI’S MARTYRDOM AND MALDEVELOPMENT Long after the cameras are gone, Haiti will still be fighting for survival after one of the most devastating earthquakes in recent history, because Haiti was super poor before the damages. There are reasons for this abject poverty, and chief among these, suggested by numerous pundits, is that Haiti is the only land in the Caribbean that successfully warded off colonialism by defeating Napoleon and his cohorts. Since then, it is alleged, that the West has enacted “unofficial sanctions,” which have, in part, resulted in its impoverished state of being. According to an internet article entitled “Why is Haiti so poor?” by Jason DeRusha, WCCO, April Knutson, a senior lecturer in French who teaches the history of Haiti at the University of Minnesota, is quoted... “These self-emancipated slaves defeated Napoleon’s army in 1804, January 1, 1804. It’s a glorious moment in the history of Haiti and the history of the world,” Knutson said. But this victory came at a tremendous cost, according to the same article, ... “In 1802, most countries still held slaves and seeing them rise up and gain independence freaked out the Western World, and they got even.” “They cut (Haiti) off from trade and development,” Knutson said. “This lasted through most of the 19th century, a total blockade.” In addition to the above opinion, Knutson also offered another answer to this question, “Greedy dictators” and “a long line of Western imperial powers that have maldeveloped, purposely maldeveloped Haiti.” Knutson has been to Haiti five times doing research and humanitarian work. Though we are proud of the groundswell of support that has come from Americans to help alleviate the plight of Haitians after the recent earthquake, the United States’ hands are not clean regarding Haiti. In 1900, after peasant uprisings threatened Caribbean instability, U.S. Marines occupied the country for 19 years and thwarted every attempt on the part of Haitians at self-reliance and independence. Black people in America don’t always have a sense that the struggle we face has its tentacles around the globe, extensions of manipulative invisible powers. Haiti is poor because of this manipulation. And though we are not excusing the ruthless, greedy dictators that have helped keep their own people down, we can see how they, too, were manipulated by materialism and illusive, truncated power. In hindsight, the Haitian situation may be one of the chief reasons why Black people around the world have acquiesced to White imperialism. It, no doubt, has left subconscious scars in the Black psyche resulting in the thought that resistance is futile. This is truly unfortunate. If Black people would think back on what happened in Haiti in 1804 wherein 20,000 (thousand) French troops were defeated by self-emancipated slaves, it would be realized that self-determination is a potent reality. That was a powerful event! In addition, we should know that those invisible tentacles of manipulation are still alive and well in America’s Black Urban communities and elsewhere. The key to Black Liberation is to unify economically, spiritually and socially in order to combat those who want to keep the people poor and oppressed, and after uniting, to keep up the momentum by eschewing greed and by reaching out for the support of the Black Diaspora. If this were done, the economic and social status of Blacks worldwide would change for the better! A luta continua...(the struggle continues). 4

THE TROUBLE WITH HAITI BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Calling A Few Good Black Men Dear Editor: Our Children Need Help Now On September 25, 2009, the body of Derrion Albert, a 16year-old student, was found on a Chicago street corner. His vicious beating — he was punched, kicked and struck with 2 by 4s — left an indelible mark on our psyches. His death reminded many of the 1954 murder of Emmit Till in Money, Mississippi, though Till’s assailants were white and the suspects in this case are Black. In New York City’s first murder of 2010, a 21-year-old father was stabbed to death on a Brooklyn street, just hours into the new year. Both deaths show the need for decisive action. Newspapers publish story after story of Black and brown boys and young men murdered each year in our inner cites. These incidents expose the nihilism, benign neglect and acts of cowardice masquerading as bravado, that permeate so many of our communities where there is an absence of positive male role models. In issuing his 2010 National Mentoring Month Proclamation

on January 6, President Barack Obama outlined the growing need for trusted adults to step up and mentor children. We are excited and happy that the President has made a call to address a critical void in our communities, but it is up to us to sign up and connect with the thousands who have heeded similar calls over the years. The call is urgent. We must encourage an extra push of responsible men who can assist in providing stable environments for boys and girls outside of their immediate family. Today, it is reported that boys receive up to 70 percent of the Ds and Fs given to all students, and create 90 percent of all classroom discipline problems. According to a Schott Foundation report, “Given Half a Chance,” some alarming educational trends involve young Black male students. Their 2005/2006 national graduation rate was 47 percent. That means that most Black male students did not graduate with their cohorts. These startling school-related statistics, coupled with the increasing number of children growing up without fathers, are creating a permanent underclass. This underclass can be measured by studying the escalating rates of community violence, economic isolation, poverty and substance abuse. In cities like Chicago, father

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Mr. President, change Your course and avoid the Torpedoes By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist (NNPA) - It is my hope and prayer that President Barack Obama succeeds as the 44th President of the United States. It would be very nice if his efforts straighten out our economy, develop our

businesses and, thus create more jobs and drastically lessen unemployment. The level of his success will be dependent on how well he does in this area. Healthcare, environment and everything else is

secondary. His citizens are suffering with unemployment reaching 10 percent overall and in some communities, like African-Americans, it is approaching 25 percent. This is the big prize but there are areas that will negatively affect the status of the economy. He must avoid these dangerous “torpedoes” or they will wreck his quest for reelection. What are these torpedoes? Namely, the Deficit, costly answers to healthcare, ill thought out environmental clean up approaches, business crippling union schemes and disparate impact on small and minority (especially Black owned) businesses. America is deep in debt. When President Obama came into office we were approaching a deficit of nearly $12 trillion with China holding more than 20 percent of the notes. Within just a year, he has taken that debt load to $14 trillion with no end in sight. It is totally out of control. You cannot run a business, family or nation with excessive debt. Pretty soon the floor will sink in and the foundation will crumble. Mr. President please address the deficit now! Not next year but right now. The demand for strong leadership is essential in this area.

The National Black Chamber of Commerce® is on record for supporting Healthcare Reform. However, what the Senate has done to it makes it now unacceptable. It is terribly too expensive now especially for the small business owner. If 70 percent of all new jobs in this nation are created by small businesses then why is this bill attacking them to the point of lethal laws and regulations? Let’s start over in crafting Healthcare Reform. Again, the demand for strong leadership is needed. Don’t leave it up to the House and Senate to set the criteria. Craft a plan for this nation and sell it yourself. The Cap and Trade Energy Bill is just plain stupid. It demands that the heart of America lose 2.3 million jobs, raises energy costs for the common family and enriches special interests all the while. It does nothing to increase our energy supply or lower greenhouse gases on a global basis. The cleanest and most productive form of energy is nuclear. Yet, this bill does not even address nuclear energy. We don’t need a big reduction in jobs. We need a serious increase in jobs right now. Mr. President please start over on this bill. It

doesn’t address our economic needs. Avoid this torpedo and move forward with strong leadership. The vast majority of our industries are not union. Businesses flourish with open shops. Unions have historically crippled the businesses they control. That’s the big problem – they control the business they invade and prohibit creativity and true entrepreneurship. Small business creates jobs and unions kill small business. So why is our President so happy to fight for unions to the detriment of small business? It’s the money (campaign contributions and lobbyist spending) I guess. The Card Check bill, Project Labor Agreements (union only contracts) and special exemptions for unions will destroy more jobs particularly for minorities. Mr. President, your pro-union attitude is comparable to sleeping with the devil. Bad things are going to happen unless you change your course. It is tragic that the Stimulus Bill is not including for the most part any Blacks, Hispanics or Asians. We thought it was a stimulus for the whole nation. 1 percent of the highway money, 1 percent of the capital access, etc. for Black business and citizens is not representa-

tive. That is not stimulating! The latest example of this comes from the $7.4 billion in broadband grants that the Stimulus Bill is giving out. The first round has just concluded and Blacks got 0, Hispanics got 0, Asians got 0. That’s right not one dollar out of billions went to a minority business or association. How can that happen when we have our first Black president? It should matter, shouldn’t it? We are in serious trouble. The only thing plentiful is the drug business. While federal employees in the greater DC area average $94,000 each in salary and no unemployment, the rest of the nation suffers greatly. We are losing our homes, salaries, net worth and quality of life and our President seems aloof to that. His priorities are pleasing union bosses, environmental zealots, and other shady special interests. It’s the economy and may his next three years be significantly better than his first. Where is that change? Alford is the co-founder, Presi d e nt / C E O o f t h e N a t i o na l Black Chamber of Commerce®.Website: www.national bcc.org. Email: halford@nationalbcc.org

Being True to Black Historymakers By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The news media is fascinated with anniversaries, especially those ending in round numbers. Therefore, it came as no surprise that the 50th anniversary of the Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins was celebrated this week. On February 1, 1960, four students from North Carolina A&T University – Ezell A. Blair, Jr., David L. Richmond, Joseph A. McNeil and Franklin E. McCain – initiated a successful effort to desegregate the lunch counter at the downtown Woolworth’s store. Although the four college students are hailed for taking a seat in order to stand up for their rights, it is important to remember that they were not alone. In fact, after they were refused service, they returned the following day with more than two dozen students. The numbers continued to swell, reaching 300 on February 5, four days after the initial protest. Among the protesters were students from Bennett College, the all-female Black college in Greensboro, and Dudley High, the school that African American students attended under segregation.

Coming six years after the Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision outlawing segregated public schools and five years after the tragic murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till near Money, Miss., the Greensboro sit-in movement sparked similar movements in other cities, including Durham, Nashville, Atlanta, Little Rock and Miami. This was three years before the March on Washington, five years before the Selma-to-Montgomery March in Alabama, four years before passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and five years before the Voting Rights Act. Today, we don’t think twice about whether we’ll be served if we enter any downtown restaurant. But that hasn’t always been so. In the case of Greensboro, African-American shoppers were encouraged to spend their money at such stores as Woolworth’s, a five-and-dime discount retail chain. However, they weren’t allowed to try on clothes before taking them home, were relegated to separate toilets and certainly weren’t allowed to sit next to whites at lunch counters. In Greensboro, as was the case in other cities across the South,

George E. Curry Blacks were not allowed to sit at all. The Woolworth’s store in Greensboro had four counter seats for Whites. African Americans, at least prior to the protest, had to eat while standing on their feet. As we begin our annual celebration of Black History Month, it is important to celebrate the thousands of nameless and faceless brave men, women and children who formed the nucleus of the modern civil rights movement yet never received the acclaim of the four students who led the Greensboro protest. Their names

are not in the history books, they gave no speeches about their dreams and their graves are not enshrined with markers listing their brave accomplishments. Yet, they are at least as important as Dr. Martin Luther King, Roy Wilkins, John Lewis or Whitney Young. It’s great to celebrate the epic moments of the civil rights movement, but it is even greater to realize that Blacks have always struggled against oppression in this country. Many of the protests that are among the most celebrated were predated by similar protests that, for some reason, did not capture the national imagination of later movements. For example, before there was a Greensboro sit-in protest in 1960, the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) had organized sit-ins in Chicago (1942), St. Louis (1949) and Baltimore (1952). Greensboro wasn’t the first sit-in site in North Carolina. On June 23, 1957, seven students were arrested in Durham at the Royal Ice Cream Shop for staging a sit-in, in the “Whites Only” section. They were convicted and the U.S. Supreme Court later refused to take up their appeal. The 1955 Montgomery Bus Saturday, February 6, 2010

Boycott launched the career of a young Baptist minister named Martin Luther King and made Rosa Parks a household name. Two years earlier, Rev. T.J. Jemison, pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, La., had organized a successful bus boycott that served as the template for Montgomery. Volunteer drivers, traveling on routes normally traversed by city buses, picked up passengers and drove to their normal bus stop. To avoid being prosecuted for operating as an unlicensed taxi or bus, drivers did not charge riders. The boycott ended June 25, 1953 with Jemison and other Black leaders reaching a compromise with city officials. The settlement called for the first two front seats being reserved for Whites, the long seat in the back of buses reserved for African Americans and all seats in between offered on a firstcome-first-served basis. There are many other instances of early Black protests, including a 1939 sit-in at the Alexandria, Va. library, organized by attorney Samuel Wilbert Tucker, and a successful (Continued on page 15) 5

One of the biggest challenges African people face in America is

Dr. Conrad Worrill to rejuvenate Black Nationalist thinking as a tool in the struggle to determine for ourselves as a people what is in our best collective interests. There are far too many African people in this country who think what is good for other people should be good for us. Nothing could be further from the truth. We can only determine what is good for us by reestablishing Black Nationalist thinking and developing a Black Nationalist program of action. This is the missing link to the liberation of African people in America. Let us briefly review the development and impact of Black Nationalism in America. Black Nationalism is a tradition that emerged in the early nineteenth-century among those Black leaders who understood the 6

need for African people in America to develop a national entity as the only solution for Black people in North America, Latin America, in the Caribbean, and on the continent of Africa `. These nineteenth-century Black Nationalist leaders such as Denmark Vessey, Nat Turner, David Walker, Henry Highland Garnet, James T. Holly, Martin R. Delany, Pap Singleton, Edwin McCabe, and Henry McNeal Turner understood that African people in America were a “nation within a nation” and should organize to collectively struggle for the liberation of Black people in this country and throughout the world. During this era there were some Black Nationalist leaders before, and after the Civil War, who led movements for people of African ancestry to leave this country and establish a homeland somewhere else. These proposals included Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean. Other Black Nationalist leaders led movements for Black people to control the towns where they lived and others who led movements to the western region of this country to establish all Black towns in Kansas and Oklahoma. The core of this Black Nationalist tradition has been to defeat and overthrow the system of white supremacy, seize control of land (somewhere) and to achieve self determination for the oppressed Black masses. The Black Nationalist tradition has always been opposed to integrations, assimilation, and accommodation as a solution to the problems of people of African ancestry in America. In this regard, Black Nationalist tradition has rejected the strategy and tactics of appealing to the morality of white people and their white supremacy system. Black Nationalists have been historically clear that people in power don’t teach powerless people how to get power. And they certainly don’t give power away, even though, when challenged, they may give up some concessions. As Black Nationalism emerged in the twentieth-century, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the establishment of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and the African Communicates League

Saturday, February 6, 2010

(ACL) became the leading spokesman for Black Nationalist ideas and organizing. Garvey used his varied skills to become one of our true twentieth-century freedom fighters. Garvey arrived in Harlem, New York on March 16, 1916. By 1919, Garvey was well established as the President General of the UNIA/ACL that had membership of over three million people with more than three hundred branches in the United States. Perhaps Garvey’s greatest contribution to the upliftment of our people, through Black Nationalism, was his ability to find a formula for organizing African people around the African principle: the greatest good for the greatest number. This was reflected in the First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World, in Madison Square Garden, in 1920. Over twenty thousand Black people from all over the world witnessed the choosing of Red, Black, and Green as the colors of the Provisional Government. In this context, Garvey and the UNIA/ACL had established an economic arm, the Negro Factories Corporation, with cooperative stores, restaurants, steam laundry ships, tailor shops, dressmaking shops, millinery stores, a doll factory to manufacture Black dolls and a publishing house. Also, Garvey formed a Steamship Corporation. The Black Nationalist tradition was continued in the twentiethcentury through the Nation of Islam and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who utilized many of the Garvey and UNIA/ACL organizing tactics and strategies. It was during the 1960s Black Power explosion that the Black Nationalist tradition reemerged through the influence of Malcolm X who adopted Black Nationalism as the political philosophy, economic and social philosophy of the organization of Afro American Unity in 1964 after he left the Nation of Islam. Finally, the Black Nationalist tradition, today, is spearheaded through the African Centered Education Movement. The mass acceptance of Kwanzaa, African Liberation Day, Buy Black Cam-

Forget the Deficit; People Need Jobs By Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. NNPA Columnist

The state of America's union is stark. The economic collapse triggered by the bursting of the housing bubble continues to take its toll. We know the statistics. Nearly one in five American workers is unemployed or underemployed. That means wages are losing ground. One in three homes with a mortgage is under water. Millions of Americans are headed to losing their homes. That will leave families adrift, children displaced. The desperate effort to keep the financial system from failing has succeeded. It has saved the big banks -- leaving them more concentrated than ever -- but not succeeded in removing the clot in financing. Small businesses can't get loans; homeowners can't get mortgages adjusted. Finance is like the blood of the economy. When there is a clot, the economy can't work and people suffer. Republicans argue that the president's recovery plan has failed. Then they prescribe the same poison that created the breakdown in the first place. They want more top-end tax cuts, more breaks for business, more deregulation. We tried tax cuts under Bush; it leads nowhere. The reality is that the recovery plan created or saved millions of jobs. Aid to states and localities kept teachers and police from being laid off in large numbers. Spending on infrastructure helped put some to work. Investment in new energy created new jobs. Aid to the unemployed -- extending unemployment benefits, subsidizing health care COBRA payments, and providing food paigns, the Reparations Movement, and Controlling Our Own Communities Campaigns are all part of the ongoing Black Nationalist tradition. Without vigorous Black Nationalist thinking and an aggressive Black Nationalist program of action, we will continue to chase false dreams created by our oppressors. We must put an end to this! Once Black Nationalism is understood by all Black people, it will be the foundation upon which the true liberation of people of African ancestry in America will take place.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. stamps -- put money into the pockets of those who need it most. The problem with the president's plan -- as any honest economist will tell you -- is that it was no t big enough. The collapse was far deeper than the president's economists predicted. We need another big jobs program. Aid should go to states and localities that now face brutal cuts that will lay off teachers, police and professors. Public jobs programs -- a green corps, an urban corps -- should target hard-hit areas like the Midwest and urban centers. We should invest in infrastructure by repairing schools, weatherizing public buildings and creating the projects that will hire construction workers. Without these commitments, there will be no recovery. Businesses won't expand into an economy in which one in five people are unemployed. Exports won't increase -- particularly with the Chinese continuing to manipulate their currency. Consumers have taken a $10 trillion hit on assets, and are tightening their belts. States and localities are facing brutal cuts. People are confused and angry. They see high deficits and think the money is going to Wall Street. There is a crisis of confidence as well as a grinding fear of what comes next. Here we need the president to lead and take on the naysayers and the false leaders. He must lay out what needs to be done, and rally the country to act. The pollsters say independents are angry about deficits, so Washington is talking about deficit reduction. EDUCATION Uptown-Edgewater Tutoring and Mentoring Program honored with Award Inspired Youth, a northside tutoring/mentoring program, was recognized Wednesday, January 27, by The Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth organization for its work on behalf of children in the Edgewater and Uptown neighborhoods. Inspired Youth offers students in kindergarten through 12th grade a mix of academic tutoring and mentoring in arithmetic, reading and writing at the Bezazian Library and Margate Park. Inspired Youth was honored with the Much Shelist Founders Award, a $7,000 award donated by the law firm Much Shelist Denenberg Ament & Rubenstein, P.C. Since 2005, the award has been presented to a promising tutoring/mentoring program that has been in existence for five years or fewer. Morrie Much, one of the firm’s founding partners, presented the award at Inspired Youth’s Wednesday afternoon tutoring session. The honorees are chosen by a Much Shelist selection committee from a group of high quality tutoring and mentoring programs recommended by Lend-AHand. However, the law firm’s commitment extends beyond funding. Much Shelist partners volunteer with various programs

as tutor/mentors or board members. In making the presentation of the check, Much praised Inspired Youth’s director Beth Struck Palmer saying, “With no organization and very little money, what she has done is organize about 140 tutors and mentors to provide services for more than 100 children. That’s about 4,000 tutoring hours a week not including the choir and piano lessons provided here.” Much said that Lawyers LendA-Hand to Youth took him and his partners to see several other tutoring/mentoring programs throughout the city, but they were attracted to Inspired Youth’s community feel. He attributed that spirit to the parents, children and volunteers. Inspired Youth is located at 5715 N. Ridge Road, Chicago, and can be contacted at 773-5614759 or at Inspiredyouth2@yahoo. com. Gov. Quinn announces $3.5 million capital grant Governor Pat Quinn announce to Erie Elementary Charter School on January 20, 2010 a capital grant in the amount of $3.5 million for Erie Elementary Charter School to purchase a building to expand from kindergarten through 5th grade to kindergarten through 8th grade. The funding for this capital grant comes from the Illinois Jobs Now!, a job generation and capital improvement program. “We cannot thank the State of Illinois enough for its support of Erie Elementary Charter School. This grant means the world to

our school, our students and our families. We are so proud of what we do here, and this grant means we can keep growing.” Velia Soto, Principal Designate for Erie Elementary Charter School. Erie Elementary Charter School (EECS) was founded in 2005 as a part of Mayor Daley’s Renaissance 2010, an initiative to create 100 new schools in the City of Chicago with the goal to provide high-quality public education and providing parents with more options to educate their children. As part of this initiative, EECS provides first rate elementary ed-

ucation to the children of Chicago. At full capacity, EECS will serve 400 predominantly low-income students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. “This investment will help ensure the children at Erie Elementary have access to the quality educational facilities they deserve,” said Governor Quinn. “A topnotch education for all Illinois students is our foremost priority.” The State’s grant will ensure that EECS can secure a building in the heart of Humboldt Park.

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

The Preacher’s Kid Guest Columist Pastor Olivia Johnson I waited with great anticipation for Friday to arrive to share in the fulfillment of a dream for native Chicagoan Sharif Atkins, whose family I’ve been blessed to know for more than 30 years. Following his acting career from his college days, I was honored to attend the Chicago premiere of Atkins’ first Hollywood production, “The Preacher’s Kid.” There was an air of Chicagostyle pride as Chicago laid out its own red carpet upon Atkins’ arrival to the Chatham ICE Theater, greeted by lights, cameras and lots of family, friends and moviegoers. “Preacher’s Kid” is a must-see movie, reflective of the difficulties families face, as parents try to protect their children from a dangerous and mean world, while children fearlessly demand the freedom to make their own choices, no matter the cost. It is based upon the story of the prodigal son [St. Luke 15], daughter in this case, whose curiosity, dreams and unwholesome influences draw her into a dark side of a world that’s unfamiliar to her. Being the daughter of a preacher, Angie, played by LeToya Luckett, had been sheltered, felt she was missing out on life, and wanted to learn life’s lesson on her own, so she thought. She soon discovers how tough life really is, but false hopes and fear that her father no longer loves her cause her to sink deeper into despair. Atkins plays Wynton, the talented choir director who not only carries a torch for Angie but also proves to be a genuine friend who goes to great length to rebuild her broken spirit throughout the movie, as well as to defend her honor. Eventually, Angie takes Wynton’s advice, musters the courage to go home, and is surprisingly greeted by a loving father and a loving church family. Atkins is quoted as saying: "This film says it's ok to branch out, but understand that you can always come back to those who love you; you have a safe haven. Everybody needs a place where they can recharge and lick their wounds." When asked how he has managed to remain diligent in pursuing his acting career in such a tough business, Atkins credits his perseverance to his DNA. He mentioned in an interview with

ABC News 7 that his dad always wanted to become a judge and is, and his mother has held numerous executive positions. Atkins expressed that he knew he wanted to be an actor since his junior year in high school and expressed his appreciation for the tutelage he received from Mary Poole while studying at North-

western University. Indeed, Atkins has phenomenal skills that warrant our support and prayers. The “Preacher’s Kid” opened the same day as Atkins’ 35th birthday. The crowd sang Happy Birthday, as he exited the theater and prepared to sign autographs. As I stood in line for his auto(Continued on page 14)

The Bookworm sez “Simeon’s Story” By Simeon Wright (with Herb Boyd) c.2010, Lawrence Hill Books $19.95 / $21.95 Canada 144 pages, includes index You’ve been doing it since you were a teenager, maybe before. A certain look sideways, eyes lowered. Unconscious flex of muscles beneath a flashy t-shirt. A smile, a glance, a wiggle of hips or lips or brows. Where would you be without a little flirting? Married? Hooked up? Maybe not. But attracting the opposite sex is how our species perpetuates. Flirting is fun. You would never in a million years think it could get you killed. But in the new book, “Simeon’s Story” by Simeon Wright (with Herb Boyd), you’ll read about a wolf whistle heard ’round the country. Growing up in Mississippi in the Jim Crow era, Simeon Wright knew that there were certain things a Black person never did; specifically, he was never remotely disrespectful to anyone who was white. Sassing “Mr. Charlie” was a good way to get in trouble. Wright learned from his father that some white people could be trusted, though. Mose Wright was a sharecropper. He knew who was fair and who wasn’t, and he wouldn’t work with dishonest landowners. Simeon Wright indicates that he had a good childhood, despite Jim Crow laws. His parents loved him and he had a big, extended family. In fact, when cousins were scheduled to visit Mississippi from Chicago, Wright “was so excited that I didn’t know what to do.” One of those cousins was fourteen-year-old Emmett Till, a bigfor-his-age boy, almost the size of a grown man. Everybody called him Bobo and he was fun-loving, but Wright remembers that “he just didn’t know the rules.” On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 24, 1955, Bobo’s lack of knowledge sparked a movement. After a long day of work, Wright, Bobo, and three other boys went to a nearby store for some refreshments. For about a minute, Bobo was alone in the building with a white woman and as she stormed out, he brashly whistled at her. Days later, as Wright slept next to his cousin, two white men entered the family’s house and snatched Emmett “Bobo” Till. In his foreword, Wright’s co-author Herb Boyd explains that this story almost didn’t see publication. Simeon Wright was tired of people taking artistic license with the story The Chicago Crusader

of his cousin’s murder. There were things that Wright didn’t care to remember, but he eventually agreed to lay some nasty myths to rest. And with crystal clarity and blistering prose, Wright does just that. Recalling a somewhat carefree childhood, Wright tells of youth interrupted by something so horrific that it hurts to read about it. He speaks of his father’s dignity and bravery, and of deep disappointment that was eventually soothed. About those myths perpetuated

Our

by journalists, Wright has a few choice words. With anger apparent, he advises that “anyone planning on working in the communications field… go to the primary sources. They know what really happened.” Surprisingly, you’ll probably find this book in the YA section of your library or bookstore, but don’t let that deter you from this powerful, important memoir. “Simeon’s Story” is a story you must read.

Mozart’s ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ to be performed Performances of Bienen School of Music’s winter opera to be held at Cahn Auditorium Four fully staged productions of Mozart’s popular comic opera “The Marriage of Figaro,” will be presented by the Northwestern University Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music. It is the second of three operas this season based on a trilogy of plays by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, the creator of the beloved character, Figaro. Performances of “The Marriage of Figaro” will take place on the University’s Evanston campus at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson St. “The Marriage of Figaro” picks up where Northwestern Opera Theater’s fall 2009 production of Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” left off. In “Figaro,” Count Almaviva has married but taken to philandering. Figaro is now his chief steward, and the Count is pursing Figaro’s fiancee Susannah, the Countess’ maid. Adding to the cast of madcap characters are 14

Cherubino, a lovesick teenager; Marcellina, a desperate woman in love with Figaro; and the pompous Dr. Bartolo. All threaten to ruin Figaro and Susannah’s wedding day. Mozart’s opera will be performed in Andrew Porter’s acclaimed English translation of Lorenzo Da Ponte’s libretto. A former music critic for The New Yorker, Porter is a London-based critic. Bienen School student vocalists will be accompanied by members of the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra. Jay Lesenger, Bienen School professor and director of opera, will stage the production. Ivan Torzs a highly regarded conductor and pianist, will conduct. Torzs has established himself as one of the most experienced opera conductors in Europe, including performances at Stuttgart, Hamburg and the Vienna State Opera. As an accomplished pianist, Torzs has accompanied sopranos Renata Scotto, Helen Donath and Cheryl Studer, in recital. Erhard Rom, who has designed sets for more than 100 productions nationwide and has participated in the Prague Quadrennial,

is the scenic designer. Greg Slawko, resident designer at the Drury Lane Theatre, Skylight Opera Theatre and Joffrey Ballet, is the costume designer. Lighting designer Stephen Sorenson, who earned a master’s degree in stage design from Northwestern, has designed stage lighting for theatre and opera productions in the Chicago area, including last year’s Northwestern Opera Theater production of “The Merry Widow.” Single tickets for “Figaro” are $22 for the general public; $18 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $8

for students. For more information, call the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall office at (847) 4915441. Tickets are available through the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall ticket office at (847) 4674000 or online at www.pickstaiger.org. The last opera in the trilogy featuring Figaro is John Corigliano’s “The Ghosts of Versailles,” suggested by the Beaumarchais play “The Guilty Mother.” It will be performed May 21 and 23 at Cahn Auditorium. This production is part of a weeklong celebration of the works of Corigliano. The composer will be in attendance. Tickets are $8 to $18.

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE (Continued from page 12) graph, I recalled my fondest memory of his first performance on the stage at Northwestern, which I shared with him and to which he replied: “You’ve been supporting me a long time,” and expressed genuine thanks. All I could think was: what a grounded preacher’s kid! After the movie, I had the privi-

lege of sharing a moment with his mother, Rev. Jackie, who noted the powerful message of unconditional love and forgiveness that transcends from the movie that could change the world. Don’t let the title fool you. It’s a powerful movie about family and relationships to which everyone can relate, learn and grow, whether you’re a preacher’s kid or not. It’s worth seeing again and again!

Forget the Deficit (Continued from page 6) balance their budgets in hard times, shouldn't the government do so also?" goes the mantra. That is the big lie because, in reality, when everyone else is cutting back, government must step in and put people to work. This will require deficits because tax revenues are down and expenditures on unemployment and food stamps are up. The simple fact is, you can't balance the budget without generating economic growth. Any attempt to do so now will deepen the downturn. Once people go back to work, and the economy gets going, tax revenues will go up, emergency spending will decline and steps can be taken to bring the deficit down. But it is utter foolishness to do so before people are at work. That's why the State of the Union is so important. It is vital that the president use this moment to set the direction, to rally the country, to take on the naysayers and to call this country to move forward. T h e R e v . National contest calls on community . . . (Continued from page 11) online news sites, creating online hubs to engage communities around specific issues and filling gaps in the types of news and information available locally. “Local foundations are increasingly taking the initiative to meet their community’s information needs, a goal as important as ensuring an area has good schools, jobs and clean air,” said Trabian Shorters, Knight Foundation’s vice president for communities, who leads the Challenge. J-lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism, has found that since 2005, foundations have awarded nearly $136 million in grants to 128 news and information projects nationwide. Knight Foundation provides free consultants to help local foundations identify opportunities and the technology that could benefit their communities. In addition, Knight will host the third Media Learning Seminar March 1-2 in Miami. The The Chicago Crusader

seminar aims to educate leaders of community and place-based foundations about media trends and the information needs of communities in a democracy. Registration for the seminar is open through Feb. 15. To apply, learn more about the challenge or register for the Media Learning Seminar, visit www.informationneeds.org. The Challenge is part of Knight’s Media Innovation Initiative, whose seven projects include an effort to explore national media reform, increase broadband access and transform journalism education, among others. The Challenge complements the sweeping recommendations of the Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy, a project of the Aspen Institute. In a report issued last fall, the commission asserts that democracy in America is threatened by the lack of equal access to quality information. The report is available at www.knightcomm.org.
