Skyscrapers are going up around the Ebony/Jet building, but will landmark status be enough to save the icon from hungry developers? By Erick Johnson
Downtown Chicago is set to explode with construction. In the next several years, the city that gave birth to the skyscraper will have a new look. A new generation of glitzy skyscrapers will sprout up all over the city, dramatically altering its famous skyline with bold new designs and soaring to greater heights. The most fertile ground for the newest crop of high-rises is on South Michigan Ave., where in the last several years powerful developers have been harvesting plans to capitalize on one of the wealthiest residential districts in the city.
After intense meetings with residents and historic preservation officials, developers are moving forward with ambitious and jaw-dropping plans to plant mega-size buildings that would transform a relatively quiet residential district into a bustling neighborhood full of retail shops and post-new condominiums. For developers, it’s a race to the top in a battle to build the biggest and best skyscraper as large as the ego of a high-powered business mogul. Sitting amidst these dreams is a small, but well-known 11-story building that’s been vacant for nearly seven years. Known to many visitors around the country as the Ebony/Jet building, for decades, it was the corporate head-

quarters of the Johnson Publishing Company. Once a proud symbol of achievement, the once Black-owned building still stands on one of the most prominent streets in America. However, in several years, the Ebony/Jet building will be wedged between two fresh skyscrapers. To the north of it will be the 620-foot “Essex on the Park” skyscraper, which officially broke ground on Jan. 19. When completed, the skyscraper overlooking Grant Park and Lake Michigan will have 479 luxury rental apartments. The deal also includes rehabbing and expanding the neighboring Essex Inn Hotel to 271 guest rooms. Two blocks south of the Ebony/Jet building will be an 86-story glass skyscraper that will resemble a stack of giant ice cubes. Reportedly named the Jahn Tower, it will have 506 units; 308 will be condominiums. There is the 515foot tower at 1326 S. Michigan and the planned twin skyscrapers on Indiana Ave., which at 76 stories high, will be third tallest building south of the Willis Tower. And this is just the South Loop. Skyscrapers are going up on the North Side, too. As the city experiences a boom in new skyscrapers, the house that Ebony/Jet founder John H. Johnson built remains a decaying relic that’s up for sale as hungry developers push the limits of their projects into unchartered waters. The buzzards of urban progress are closing in while the Ebony/Jet building stands increasingly vulnerable to extinction as space grows tight on South Michigan Ave. and demands for bigger, stylish skyscrapers climb to greater proportions. For the Ebony/Jet building, an edifice whose history and important contributions to Black (Continued on page 2)

‘Heroes in the Hood’ aims to help Parkway Gardens Crusader answers the call to help residents achieve better lives Crusader staff report A pair of tennis shoes dangle from two powerlines in front of the Parkway Gardens apartments in Woodlawn. It’s a ritual whenever someone is killed in the Black community. Parkway Gardens, a historic complex that gave Blacks a chance at the better life during the Great Migration, is struggling to return to its glory days. Now, the Chicago Crusader, which sits across the street, aims to offer help and hope to the complex by expanding its successful “Heroes in the Hood” program,
which fosters community activism by honoring and celebrating selfless volunteers. The move comes as shootings and gun violence continue to rise and keep Chicago in the national spotlight while President Donald Trump accuses city officials for not doing enough to reduce Chicago’s murder rates. The Crusader will launch its latest plans with an expansion reception on February 9 in the Gidwitz Lobby at the Logan Center on the University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park. The event will invite community leaders and elected officials to help with the “Heroes in the Hood” by becoming a
sponsor. Crusader editor and publisher Dorothy R. Leavell explains: “the need for the expansion of our program comes as shootings and gun violence continue to rise and keep Chicago in the national spotlight. The Crusader is located in the heart of the violence, and has been for 53 years. Yet our building has not been vandalized, our employees have not been harmed in all that time. The reason is that the community respects what we do. The program is needed now more than ever, and our expansion initiative reflects that need.” (Continued on page 3)

(Continued from page 1) America has inspired generations for decades, the warning signs are there. With its Ebony/Jet marquee still beaming at the top, it’s a valuable piece of real estate that’s stuck in the past. Its uncertain future depends on what happens in the present, in trending neighborhoods and in corporate America, where big buildings are in and smaller ones are out. Sitting on prime real estate where the demand for multi-million dollar skyscrapers is showing no signs of slowing down, the Ebony/Jet building
“With my mother Eunice by his side, they built an iconic brand. I am thrilled that the building housed our company for so many years and is being considered for landmark status. It’s a true testament to the hard work of my parents and all the people who called Johnson Publishing Company home for decades.” A member with the city’s Historic Preservation Division whose staff sits on the city’s Landmark Commission said the group could take up to nine months to decide whether the Ebony/Jet building should be an official Chicago landmark. The commission has seven requirements for landmark designation. Some of the criteria require prospective buildings to have architectural, cultural historic impact on Chicago, the State of Illinois or the U.S. Another criterion says the building must identify with a person or persons who significantly contributed to the city, state or country. For landmark approval, a building must meet at least two of seven criteria, which the Ebony/Jet building seems to do. If the Ebony/Jet building becomes a Chicago landmark, developers cannot demolish the structure. However, developers can remove the Ebony Jet sign that sits on top of the building since it’s not considered a feature of historic significance, a historic preservation staff member told the Crusader. Also, the interior of the Ebony/Jet building is not part of the designation because the art and furnishings were moved to Johnson Publication’s current home at 200 South Michigan where the company rents a floor. Developers can gut the interior and use the building for a different purpose. The new owner of the Ebony/Jet building could receive tax credits that could help pay for construction costs that were spent on converting the building to a new purpose. In 2016, the storied original Chicago Defender building at 3435 Indiana Ave., was restored 28 years after it was designated a Chicago landmark. However, the building in the city’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood remains empty. The Defender is now

On Feb. 2, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that the building would be considered for preliminary landmark status by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks—a nine-member group that has granted similar status over the years to over 370 historic sites in Chicago, including the homes of writers Gwendolyn Brooks, Lorraine Hansberry and Richard Wright. The group’s latest move capped a month of researching and writing a preliminary report about the history of the Ebony/Jet building. “My father started Johnson Publishing Company to inform, empower and uplift the African-American community,” Linda Johnson Rice, chairman of Johnson Publishing Company and chairman emeritus of Ebony Media Holdings, said in a statement.

Trump again threatens to send ‘Feds’ to handle Chicago’s ‘carnage’ Congressman Davis: ‘Situation Calls for Reason not Rhetoric’ By D. Kevin McNeir Editor, Washington Informant Newspaper With his sights set on Chicago, America’s third-largest city, as a target, recently-elected President Donald Trump claims to have a solution for the violent city where gunfire has become commonplace and created a homicide rate that last year reached a 20-year high. His plan, while vague, follows a Jan 24 tweet in which he said, “Chicago’s murder rate is record setting – 4,331 shooting victims with 762 murders in 2016. If the Mayor can’t do it he must ask for Federal help.” Trump later added, again in a tweet, that if Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible “carnage” he would “send in the Feds!” Subsequent reports from CNN citing law enforcement sources suggest that the plan calls for an increase in the number of agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, from a current force of 40 to 60. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel responded in a printed statement to Trump’s tweeted “threat.” “We have received no word from the federal government to confirm these reports but it would be welcome news if the administration has indeed agreed to one of Mayor Emanuel’s requests for federal resources.”
Trump, once again taking to Twitter, added to his comments concerning Chicago’s substantive escalation of violence, calling the situation “totally out of control.” During a recent meeting with Black community leaders from the Chicagoland area he reportedly said, “We’re going to have to do something about Chicago,” – a city which he previously described as being overrun by drug dealers and gangs. Few would argue that something must be done to curb the shootings that have resulted in an unprecedented homicide toll of 762 deaths in 2016. The violence has continued into 2017 with 51 recorded homicides in January. But so far, it appears that Trump’s “plan” has been met with a lukewarm response. Last year, Emanuel unveiled an expanded mentoring program for students in an effort to keep at-risk youth away from the city’s plethora of gangs, mostly holding on to turfs located on the city’s south and west sides. The mayor also announced plans to boost the number of officers within the Chicago Police Department. There have also been recommendations from several city officials to use other measures, including sending more Drug Enforcement Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents to Chicago, and pushing for an increase in the prosecution of those guilty of federal gun crimes.
Congressman Harry C.Danny AlfordDavis Still, current numbers do not bode well for citizens and city officials fed up and frustrated by the rise of shootings and homicides in the Windy City. In 2016, Chicago, with a population of 2.7 million, recorded more shootings and homicides than any other U.S. city, according to both FBI and Chicago Police Department data. Additionally, the city’s murder clearance rate, a measure of solved and closed cases, stands as one of the lowest in the country.
Former Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) member and a co-founder of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panthers, Bobby Rush, has represented the city’s 1st District in Congress since 1993. He responded to Trump, tweeting back, “We welcome all the help we can get. Come to my district.” Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-IL), who has represented the city’s 7th District since 1997 and remains a staunch member of the
Congressional Black Caucus, shared his perspective. “The Bible says ‘come and let us reason together, otherwise we shall be utterly destroyed by the edge of the sword’,” he said. “Now, it’s true, and no one can deny, that we’re experiencing difficult times in relation to violence, poverty and frustration. But that’s no reason to go berserk.” “We need to focus on job creation and follow the example of previous presidents like Roosevelt and his fellow Democrats whose plan helped unemployed Americans during the Great Depression. We need training programs in our schools so that youth can learn skills while also receiving a stipend until they’re fully prepared to put in productive work.” “As for the rhetoric that’s going on, there’s a lot to be said for negotiating with love and respect for one another. Open warfare and the bashing of elected officials will not get us any closer to fixing the societal issues that we currently face.” Davis lamented the lack of optimism shared by a majority of those who reside within his district. “So many of my people have lost hope. They don’t believe that tomorrow will be any different or better than today. That’s why the behavior of a growing number of citizens has become warped. They can’t see that they’ve gone down the wrong road. We need to reason our way out of this dilemma; I’m confident that we can and will.”
‘Heroes in the Hood’ aims to help Parkway Gardens (Continued on page 14) Now in its 24th year, the “Heroes in the Hood,” a non-profit campaign will hold its annual awards ceremony that honors young volunteers in May. In addition to awards, Crusader Publisher Dorothy R. Leavell wants to make the program even bigger by bringing together Parkway Gardens alumni who are former residents of the complex. The plan aims to help mentor and inspire the complex’s current residents, many of whom need strong role models for guidance and courage to live better lives. Another planned component would highlight young volunteers who are doing good things in the community throughout the year in the Crusader. As gun violence and crime continues to rock many of Chicago’s predominately Black neighborhoods, life goes on at Parkway Gardens, a sprawling apartment complex of 35 buildings located from 6330 to 6546 South on King Drive. Parkway Gardens was once the home of former first lady Michelle Obama and her older brother Craig Robinson. Both went on to become www.chicagocrusader.com
successful individuals with Ivy League degrees. The family moved out in 1965. In a 2009 interview with Time magazine, Michelle Obama recalled her childhood memories of the complex as ‘a wonderful, small apartment building… but now when I pass it, it’s - I was, like, God, I never saw that apartment in the way that I’m seeing it now.’ Back when Michelle and her brother lived at Parkway Gardens, many households were headed by two parents. Mary McLeod Bethune once gave a speech at Parkway Gardens during the development’s cornerstone-laying ceremony. Today, Parkway Gardens is known as the ‘O Block’ after Odee Perry, a member of the Black Disciples gang who was killed in 2011. Gang wars continue to rock many Chicago neighborhoods as residents in Parkway Gardens cry out for help as poverty, unemployment and crime force many to live in despair and fear. Some who spoke to the Crusader for this story are too afraid to have their names in the newspaper out of fear of retribution. But many say more jobs are needed for the com-

WHERE IS THE BLACK POWER? Sometimes it is necessary to face the truth about situations that will provoke anger. We (the United States and, by extension, the world) are in a time of crisis. These are dangerous times, and it will be important for the Black community to develop a game plan to successfully navigate the ongoing tide of change. One of the first things that we must realize is that we are connected with other Black people all across the globe. However, for the most part, we insist on being culturally myopic; we only see that which is in our immediate surroundings. There’s nothing wrong with that, per se, but it shouldn’t stop there. Black people everywhere are facing some of the same obstacles, yet people insist on shifting blame for our circumstances to local and/or national politicians. The one truism that is becoming more evident as we continue to evolve on this planet is that we are the greatest influencers of our surroundings. In other words, what happens outside of us is a direct reflection of what is happening inside of us. The sad fact is that if we continue to behave the same way, we will continue to attract the same circumstances. For example, everywhere that Black people reside, there tends to be significant social and economic mayhem. This is because we take ourselves with us wherever we go. Whether it is crime and poverty in inner city American communities, the slums of Haiti, or the challenges faced by the entire African continent, we seem to be at a disadvantage. Africa seems to be on the brink of losing all of its natural resources through investments by the Chinese and others. Foreigners have come in to take control of that which we have refused to control ourselves in what is beginning to look like “neo-colonization.” If things keep going the way they are, the richest continent on Earth will no longer be seen as the home of Black people. This is common behavior. Very often we are more concerned with things that separate us: skin tone, economic status, neighborhood turf, and other artificial barriers that keep us apart, rather than unifying to find solutions to our problems. All the while, power brokers, white and otherwise, are positioning themselves to control EVERYONE. For some reason, we continue to ridiculously blame carnage on a city Mayor or the president or school superintendent, all of whom have changed while the problems have remained the same! President Trump has threatened to send the National Guard to Chicago in order to reduce the incidence of Black on Black murder. Caveat emptor: may the buyer beware! The presence of the National Guard in the Black community will not bode well for the community, whatever some may think. Conversely, we often give a pass to those who are creating the havoc in our neighborhoods. Even though it is possible (according to some conspiracy theorists) that there are others outside of our communities who are actually committing some of the murders while disguised as Blacks, it is also true that many of the perpetrators are not only known, but are protected by community residents. “Snitches get stitches” is a common community refrain. But that shouldn’t keep us from making those who are committing the crimes accountable for their actions. Pookie and Ray Ray are known, yet they are sheltered. Truth be told, they are enemies of the Black community. Couple this with the fact that there is a continual hemorrhaging of Black businesses from our communities and the picture of powerlessness is complete. The way things are today, if our collective behavior does not change, the Black community will go the way of the dinosaurs. With all of the Black Power that we have demonstrated as evidenced by Black successes in every field of endeavor, it does not seem to be enough to convince us to work together to change our circumstances. We must stop squandering our Black Power through negligence generated by self-hate. No one will save us BUT us! A luta continua.
Understandably, the mayor and police superintendent are gaa gaa over the fact that more than 16,000 men and women from across the city applied to be Chicago police officers. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Superintendent Eddie Johnson are gloating over the fact that two-thirds of those who applied represented the city’s African-American and Latino community. To that I say Whoopee Doo! Given the time and amount of money and resources that went to the recruitment marketing campaign I expected the number of applicants to be much higher, but I guess you have to start someplace. The part of all of these men patting themselves on the back that is disturbing is, we know that the whole campaign was borne out of politics rather than a real concern for having the department reflect the demographics of the city. If Emanuel wasn’t under constant fire about the delay in releasing the Laquan McDonald murder video, as well as the recent damning U.S. Department of Justice report, we would have never seen such a push to get Black and Latino applicants. The bigger issue, in my opinion, is how many of these applicants

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Let’s not get too excited about the numbers Dear Editor:
will be hired. We know the Fraternal Order of Police opposed the new rules that allowed people with bad credit and some misdemeanor convictions to apply. Now, we must wait and see if the FOP will escalate their objections. Who knows, they might wind up in court over the process. We know that in the past, CPD has been able to use intangibles, such as mental fitness, to exclude minorities. I don’t have much confidence they won’t continue to try schemes like that. No one should be surprised if the vast majority of the white applicants are hired and only a tiny percent of minority applicants get to join the force. I freely admit I might be wrong on all of the above. At the same time, though, has either Emanuel or Johnson given the Black community a reason to trust them? The former is our best friend when election time rolls around, and Johnson doesn’t seem to have a handle on anything other than what the mayor tells him. In my mind, the first thought that will always come to mind is Johnson’s statement shortly after being sworn in, that he had never witnessed police misconduct in his 28 years on the job. Even if in his heart of hearts he believed that, it was a really stupid thing to say, especially in light of the recent Glenn Evans trial and cover up of the McDonald video. I hope I am wrong and that the majority, or close to it, of African-
American applicants will join the force. Chicago history however, just won’t’ let me believe that will happen. I suspect the mayor’s communications team is already drawing up news releases on why such a paltry number of minority applicants were hired. Penny Graham (Continued on page 14)

For the Love of Money Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford There just seems to be no end to the scandals connected with Hillary Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State, and her role in the Global Clinton Foundation. It was a money-making rouse aimed at raking in as many millions of dollars regardless of the threat to the security of our nation and the scores of victims who got in their way. The following letter describes a struggle that our national office, and our affiliate, Manatee County (Florida) Black Chamber of Commerce, is going through to prevent the destruction of a major American company and the people who are employed there. Commissioners, In recent days, you have no doubt seen a great deal of activity from the Sierra Club concerning a phosphate mining operation owned by Mosaic in your county. This is an issue of some importance to The National Black Chamber of Commerce, as our Manatee County Chapter represents minorityowned business in the community. Like you, we are committed to the growth of the county and believe that creating new jobs, and retaining existing ones, is of paramount importance.
Harry C. Alford That is why it is truly disappointing to see the Sierra Club leading a fake grassroots fight against Mosaic’s permit for the mine. In fact, as you may know, the Sierra Club appears poised to file a lawsuit against the permit no matter what you, as Manatee County commissioners, decide. There can be little doubt that you have an important decision to make about the future of Mosaic’s phosphate mining operation. More than a hundred families in your commu-
nity directly depend on this operation for their livelihood. A number of vendors who service the mine also have jobs and income at stake. Disapproving a permit for the mine means lost jobs, lost dollars, and lost opportunity for many, including the kinds of minority businesses my organization represents. The Sierra Club’s involvement appears even more disappointing when one considers recent revelations from major news outlets that the Clinton Foundation, which is tied closely to the Sierra Club, funneled millions of dollars from Moroccan business interests to try to put Mosaic out of business. After the Clinton Foundation took as much as $28 million in donations from Morocco’s ruler, King Mohammed VI, Ms. Clinton and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chief Lisa Jackson did everything they could in 2011 to shut down Mosaic’s operations. You will recall that EPA was relatively uninterested in phosphate mining until Lisa Jackson and the EPA began their assault on Mosaic in 2011. Why would Morocco have such an interest in a phosphate mining operation in south Florida? The reason is clear. Morocco’s stateowned phosphate company, OCP, is a direct competitor of Mosaic and would benefit greatly from a
shutdown of the mine in Manatee County. Shutting down the Mosaic mine was such a priority for Morocco and its state-owned competitor of Mosaic that King Mohammed VI directed $15 million to the Clinton Foundation through OCP. In the meantime, the Sierra Club, which has well-known ties to the Clinton network, has become the artificial voice of the people working on the front lines in Manatee County to shut down Mosaic’s permit. You will recall that in June of 2016, the Sierra Club “enthusiastically endorsed” Ms. Clinton for President. If this story seems difficult to follow, there is a reason. The story involves Arab business interests, millions of dollars changing hands through private foundations, and politicians and government officials directing their crosshairs at an American business. It also involves the Sierra Club, a group eager to take money from the Clinton circle to target American industry. The story is complicated because those involved hoped to hide the truth. The evidence unearthed recently, though, provides the clear picture that a foreign company in Morocco used influence and money to shut down an American business that provides jobs right here in Manatee County. If successful, this plot would hurt many in Manatee
County. There are consequences, though, for all Americans, since Mosaic is the only domestic producer of fertilizer. If the Moroccans are successful in using their allies to shut down Mosaic, it will leave the U.S. dependent on phosphates from Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia. This has dangerous implications for our food supply. We urge you, in your capacity as county commissioners, to consider not only the benefits that the Mosaic mine brings to this community, but to also consider the nature of the opposition to this permit. It is our strong belief, born [sic] out by the evidence, that the Sierra Club is far more interested in a coordinated takedown of Mosaic than any sincere degree of environmental concern. Our hope is that you will do everything in your power to cut through the web of influence that extends from the Arab world, through the Clinton Foundation, and now into Manatee County, and make the right decision for this American business upon which so many people rely. National Black Caucus of State Legislators call for debt collection reform By Charlene Crowell When many consumers think of billion-dollar industries, banks and Wall Street often come to mind. Yet there is another industry in the same lucrative league that affects over 70 million consumers each year: debt collection. In recent years, debt collection has consistently topped the list of consumer complaints received by the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and state Attorneys General. Further and according to the CFPB, more than 25 federal debt collection cases have been filed for deceiving and abusing consumers. Collectively, the cases have brought more than $300 million in restitution and another $100 million in civil penalties have resulted from these filings. As state legislatures convene across the country for 2017 sessions, it appears that the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) has taken note of the harms that are caused by illegal debt collection practices. An NBCSL resolution calling for an end to abusive debt collection practices was ratified during the group’s annual December meeting. Sponsored by North Carolina’s Senator Floyd B. McKissick, Jr., the
resolution notes that “the overwhelming majority of people who are in debt and being pursued by debt collectors are not in debt by choice; but due to circumstances such as unexpected job loss, divorce or other marital problems, and serious illness.” Many Black neighborhoods are more likely to have residents with debts in collection. The resolution further states that our neighborhoods also have double the number of debt judgments compared to White areas — –regardless of income levels. “Unfair, abusive, and deceptive debt collection practices are hurting consumers and as a result, court judgments are entered against people for debts they do not legally owe,” said Senator McKissick. “The NBCSL resolution affirms the need for strong consumer protections at the state and federal level. This is critically important as abusive debt collection practices frequently target not only AfricanAmerican communities, but seniors and military families as well.” In calling for state legislatures to adopt initiatives requiring more detailed and accurate information and documentation in debt collection actions, the resolution also notes and supports CFPB’s efforts to promulgate a federal rule to address
www.chicagocrusader.coM
Charlene Crowell debt collection abuses. Consumer advocates agree – a call for continued and coordinated support from both states and federal regulators is needed before consumers can find financial relief. “States should continue to strengthen the rules and laws for debt collection to better protect consumers,” said Lisa Stifler, Deputy Director of State Policy with the Center for Responsible Lending. “Too often we’ve seen debt collectors file lawsuits in state courts against the wrong person or for a debt not owed. State leg-

islatures and courts must stop this abusive financial practice by holding debt collectors accountable for initiating unwarranted legal actions.” The need for reforms is supported by a recently released CFPB report on consumer experiences with debt collection. The report, based on a survey, explored a range of issues such as frequency of contact, lawsuits, and the accuracy or inaccuracy of claims. Prominent among survey findings: • About 75 percent of consumers sued do not go to the court hearing, which generally makes them responsible for the debt. • 53 percent of consumers reported receiving collection attempts that were incorrect because the debt was not theirs, was the wrong amount, or was owed by a family member. • More than 40 percent of nonWhite consumers reported being contacted about a debt in collection, while only 29 percent of White consumers reported having the same experience. “Some debt collectors care only about squeezing as much as they can from the names on their lists,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. “The typical collector is paid on commission and may have only a passing relationship with the debtor. Some make the calculation that their chances of being called to ac-
count later are remote. But the urgent impetus to secure immediate payment is ever present.” “The Bureau’s survey demonstrates the urgent need for a strong federal rule on debt collection,” said Melissa Stegman, a CRL Senior Policy Counsel. “We commend the CFPB for exploring this important topic in depth and look forward to the Bureau proposing a strong rule that frees consumers from abusive debt collection practices,” concluded Stegman. AFRICAN PEOPLE AND THE REAL MEANING OF EDUCATION, PART I Dr. Conrad Worrill, Professor Emeritus, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS). New office location is at 1809 E. 71st Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-592-2598. Email:cwworrill@neiu.edu Website: www.drconradworrill.com
Dr. Conrad Worrill
We must stop the “Miseducation” of our youth. We must help our youth to redefine the reality of the institutions that affect us. The political behavior of a certain sector of Africans in America leadership in the educational arena should cause us to ask the question, “What is the real meaning of education?” Education is the process of instilling the values of a society, group, nation, race, or ethnic group. It is the method by which people are taught the relationship to their families, communities, nation, race, and the world. Further, education defines the function of society and strives to help one become an active participant in the growth and development of a given society, nation, race, and ethnic group. It is in this context that we understand that education is an important process in helping a people acquire power for the perpetuation of their interests. It should be obvious by now that most African children in America who attend the public schools of America are not receiving an education. At best it can be called training. That is, learning the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic. In many instances, this kind of training is occurring on a very mini-
mal basis with African children in America. It is important that we consult one of our great educators, Carter G. Woodson, in helping sum up this awesome problem of education that keeps Africans in America in a constant state of mental captivity. Brother Woodson stated in his great book, published in 1933, The Miseducation of the Negro, that, “The same educational process which inspires and stimulates the oppressor with the thought that he is everything and has accomplished everything worthwhile, depresses and crushes at the same time the spark of genius in the Negro by making him feel that his race does not amount to much and never will measure up to the standards of others.” Woodson made it clear that Africans in America educated in this manner are a hopeless liability to the race. This is still at the heart of our educational problem today. Therefore, our task becomes one of the continued struggles to reconceptualize the mission of education for our people. This re-conceptualization must be based on the premise that Woodson set forth when he said, “The race will free it-
self from exploiters just as soon as it decides to do so. No one else can accomplish this task for the race. It must plan and do for itself.” We will never acquire real power if this does not happen. Essentially, our mission should be that of establishing our own educational agenda that is based on creating a new educational ethos. The present ethos instills in African children in America the idea that if you go to school and get an education you will get a job. We should know by now that there is not necessarily a correlation between going to school and getting a job. It definitely has nothing to do with the upliftment of our race. The task of re-conceptualizing a new educational ethos is to understand that the mission of our education should be to make a people whole again as the Reparations Movement is demanding. Making us whole again is a process that defines education in the context of our own political, economic, cultural, and spiritual needs. This new educational ethos must rest on the idea that the group interests of our race are more important than those of any individual. Dr. Anderson Thompson calls this the
“African Principle.” In other words, the only way we will become liberated and independent is through group thinking and group action not as individuals. We must work to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number. Succinctly stated, our purpose for becoming educated should be one of helping to build a movement to liberate us from the oppression of white supremacy and racism so that we can build a new social, political, cultural, economic, and spiritual order for ourselves as we struggle to link up with African people around the world. This kind of education must facilitate the re-stimulation of the extended African in American family foundation as we struggle to become an economically self-sufficient people who produce, process, distribute, wholesale and retail like everyone else in the world. Finally, this new educational ethos must instill in us the spirit of producing, the spirit of building, and the spirit of controlling what we create. Anything short of this will merely mimic the education of our oppressors and we will continue to be their subjects, to do and be whatever they choose.
Trump Serious About Helping Regular Folks? Stopping Shady Solar Panel Salespeople Would Be Good… By Julianne Malveaux As a progressive who worked hard to help get Secretary Hillary Clinton elected, it is challenging for me to accept Donald Trump as President. But, he won. At least for now, I have to make the best of a bad situation. Which means progressives like me will have to both resist the Trump administration’s odious policies, and also pressure — and even cooperate with – the administration to implement policies that reflect our worldview. This is why I was interested to see a recent letter sent to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) by three Democratic Members of Congress. Signed by Congressmen Henry Cuellar of Texas, Emmanuel Cleaver of Missouri and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi – it urges the CFPB to look into bad actors operating in the rooftop solar industry. What we are talking about here are those salespeople that go door to door, and bombard consumers with telemarketing calls, urging them to put solar panels on their rooftops. Now, for some people, rooftop solar makes both environmental and financial sense. 6
This is why I generally support the industry. But what concerns me – and those three Democratic Congressmen – are the shady operators that mislead potential customers about the cost saving benefits of installing those panels. The letter outlined three major concerns. First, that new customers may be unaware that the panels can cost upwards of $15,000 and that they will have to pay that money back. This purchase can generate an additional lien against their home making it harder to sell their house, which also decreases its value. For those Americans barely getting by, and counting on every dollar of equity in their house, this is problematic. This is especially true if they hope to sell their home to fund retirement. Second, salespeople sometimes tell customers that they will save a lot of money on their utility bill because the price of electricity from utility companies is going up. That simply is not accurate. In reality, many people’s electric bills are coming down, stabilizing or going up only single digits. This is because of cheap and abundant natural gas used to produce electricity. Solar panel customers don’t see any
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2017
Dr. Julianne Malveaux savings on their electric bills, but have to pay back the cost of buying or leasing the panels. Every month, people are out of pocket more – not less — money. Third, the letter to the CFPB points out that many of these solar panel sales pitches include promises of “no money down” and other high-pressure sales tactics. Anyone who has ever dealt with a shady salesperson – whether for solar panels or a used car – knows that these
tactics are not the tools of an honest broker. Plus, as the Wall Street Journal exposed this January, we know many solar panel salespeople are pitching so-called government loans that can be used to help make homes more energy efficient. In reality, these Property Assessed Clean Energy, or PACE loans, are a type of loan which gives creditors top priority on securing repayment – even priority over a mortgage. No wonder, according to the Journal, that PACE loans are likely “the fastest-growing type of financing in the U.S.” The title of the article should make us all fearful: “America’s Fastest-Growing Loan Category Has Eerie Echoes of Subprime Crisis.” While there have been rumblings that the Trump Administration would curtail the CFPB, the letter from Congressmen Cleaver, Cuellar and Thompson illustrates why this regulatory agency is important. Action against these shady rooftop solar companies, who seem to target communities of color, is one way that this administration could showcase its commitment to the working people who supported it. Indeed, as President Trump hosted a “listening session” with some
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
Black Republicans “in honor” of Black History Month, he made no specific policy commitments. It would have been fantastic had he taken this small issue on, signaling that he understands the exploitation that some communities experience because of this solar chicanery. The solar industry generates more than 200,000 jobs across the nation. While Donald Trump might not be concerned about producing clean energy, he says he cares about protecting American workers. That is why I am urging his Administration, and the CFPB, to take steps to eliminate the bad actors in rooftop solar. Unless we do, people will catch on, and walk away from solar. That will hurt our economy and our fight to beat climate change. Hopefully one out of two of those concerns is enough for the new Administration to take action to protect consumers. Congressman Cedric Richmond brings bold new CBC Leadership Newly Elected Chair Vows To Make Inclusion of The Black Press a Key Component in Preserving the Rights of African Americans By: Danny J. Bakewell Congressman Cedric Richmond has been a Congressman in New Orleans for the past six years. During his tenure he has experienced some of the best and worst times in the country and has had a front row seat for all of the action. Now the 43 year old con-
take on this role the congressman explained, “I have always been interested in serving as Chair of the Caucus but over the Thanksgiving Holiday I began to contemplate what life was going to look like in the new environment of the Trump Administration, and realized that the CBC was going to have to take the lead role in insuring African Americans have a loud and active voice. The congressman felt he was up to the challenge and in November his colleagues in Congress and in the Senate voted him as the Chairman of the Caucus.
the leadership and members of the Caucus have strategic thinking, strategic planning and strategic execution. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi asked that all Democrats
defer to senior members in crucial leadership roles. Congressman Richmond didn’t see this request as a deterrent from him running and ultimately becoming chairman. “The CBC has never been an organiza-
tion led or deferred to by seniority and I believed I was best suited to take on this role” stated the three term congressional leader, and obviouslyphis colleagues agreed. (Continued on page 14)

THEATRE’S NEW WEST LOOP HOME, THE STATION: Chicago Children’s Theatre announced details about the first production in its new home in Chicago’s West Loop: Chicago Children’s Theatre, The Station, which opened in January at 100 S. Racine Avenue, the former 12th District Chicago Police Station. The Magic City, created by Chicago’s internationally acclaimed shadow puppet theater Manual Cinema, will christen the new, 149-seat Pritzker Family Studio Theatre at Chicago Children’s Theatre, The Station. Performances are ongoing through Sunday, February 19. Manual Cinema’s first all-ages show, loosely adapted from Edith Nesbit’s 1910 novel The Magic City, uses overhead projectors, paper shadow puppets, live actors in silhouette, miniature toy theater, and live musical accompaniment to create an innovative theatrical experience that updates Nesbit’s novel for a contemporary retelling. Meet nineyear-old Philomena, whose great love is building miniature structures out of books, toys and other found objects from around her house. One day, her older sister announces that she is engaged to marry, and the two go to live at the mansion of her sister’s fiancé. Left alone in her vast new home, forced to make friends with her annoying stepbrother, Philomena secludes herself in the attic where she builds the biggest miniature city she’s ever made. Later that night, Philomena wakes up to discover that her city has come alive. As she steps through the city gates, her adventure begins. Ultimately, Manual Cinema’s newest production explores a timely theme: the hard work and love it takes to rebuild when the unexpected throws everything into uncertainty. By the end of every show, Manual Cinema will have erected and illuminated a beautiful miniature city, live, onstage - a hopeful, communal setting that the audience will be invited to explore after every performance. Tickets are $25. Run time is 60 minutes. For tickets and information, visit chicagochildrenstheatre.org or call 872-222-9555. Question number one: What famous Chicago journalist was kidnapped from a television studio and nearly died after being shot in the head twice?
A. Cheryl Burton, anchorwoman, WLS Channel 7
B. Marion Brooks, anchorwoman, WMAQ Channel 5
C. Merri Dee, former anchorwoman, WGN-TV
D. Lester Holt, former anchorman, WBBM Channel 2
The answer is Merri Dee (C). She survived the tragic event that unfolded one evening in 1971. She was not expected to survive and the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson administered her last rites twice. It’s Black History Month and the stories of Black achievers is blooming with renewed interest as the immensely popular Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington continues to draw huge crowds from across the country. At the Harold Washington Library and other Chicago Public Library branches throughout the city, many new readers and history buffs will discover some interesting stories as they use an unfamiliar tool when researching facts about famous and influential Blacks: the HistoryMakers’ video and oral archive digital database. The story of Merri Dee is just one of many thousands readers will discover as part of a new collaboration between the Chicago Public Library and the HistoryMakers, a national organization whose massive database on Black achievers is the largest video and oral history archive system in the world. The system is free, although HistoryMakers does accept donations since it’s a nonprofit corporation. (Continued on page 14)

The Home Depot Kicks off its 2017 Retool Your School In Its Eighth Consecutive Year, the World’s Largest Home Improvement Specialty Retailer Will Award Deserving HBCUs $360,000 in Campus Improvement Grants The Home Depot announced the launch of its 2017 Retool Your School Grant Program, offering Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) an opportunity to apply for grants to use toward creating sustainable renovations and additions to their campuses. This year, The Home Depot introduced two ways to enter the Retool Your School program for 2017. HBCUs will have the choice of opting into the program through the standard proposal submission, and for the first time ever, HBCUs can enter the RYS program through an all-new and exciting nomination process. This nomination process allows HBCU faculty, staff, students and community supporters to nominate their favorite HBCU to participate in the program via Twitter and/or Instagram using the school’s sponsor-provided hashtag, which can be found at www.retoolyourschool.com. Accredited HBCUs with a minimum of 100 nominations will then qualify to enter the voting period.
2017, and ends April 16, 2017. During this period, the HBCU community can vote in two ways: 1. By casting one online vote per day at www.retoolyourschool.com. 2. By using your school’s unique, designated hashtag to cast unlimited social votes through Twitter and Instagram. The nine schools that receive the highest number of votes during the voting period will advance to the final round and submit their proposals. A panel of distinguished judges will evaluate each school’s proposal. Judges will consider the quality of each proposal and the school’s ability to execute the project within the specified budget. Proposals for all three grant levels must highlight how each project will make a lasting, positive impact on the HBCU campus. A total of $360,000 will be granted to the nine HBCUs with winning proposals. The schools will be categorized in one of three clusters, based on each school’s student population. Each cluster will have three winners vying for one $50,000, one $40,000 and one $30,000 grant. The breakdown is as follows: Cluster 1 is open to schools with a student enrollment of 4,000 or more; Cluster 2 is open to schools with a student enrollment of 1,201–3,999 students;
The Retool Your School Grant Program continually grow,” says Melissa Brown, Senior Marketing Manager at The Home Depot. “The program is the embodiment of the culture and commitment of The Home Depot’s support to community. At the Home Depot, we acknowledge and appre-
ciate the vital contributions that HBCUs have made and continue to make to our nation’s rich history, and are proud to partner in this legacy.” For more information on The Home Depot Retool Your School Grant Program, visit www.retoolyourschool.com.

She continued with a solo career, recording numerous hits including “I’ll Take You There” and “Freedom Highway,” as well as giving voice to the songs of the Civil Rights era. How hard would you fight to be free? After spending two decades in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Mo (Boyd Holbrook) struggles to put his past behind him as he readjusts to a new life working in an animal shelter. Doris (Elisabeth Moss) is trapped in another sort of prison: an abusive marriage. A dramatic encounter brings these two troubled souls together, and a possible murder connects them. Soon, Mo finds himself risking everything, including being locked up once again for someone else’s crime to protect the fragile Doris. Driven by explosive perfor-
By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, M.S.J. mances from Moss and rising star Holbrook, the feature debut “The Free World” from director Jason Lew is a gripping, mood-drenched exploration of guilt, redemption, and what it means to be free. “The Free World” is a sad movie about a man who is trying to savor as much freedom as he can, even though he is so measured as to
make it seem that he doesn’t believe that he is actually out of prison. Although quiet, he still attracts many lingering looks as he begins working at an animal shelter operated by Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer. One night as he’s closing up the shelter, he finds a distraught Doris who seems out of her mind and is looking for her dog. Against his own better judgment, Mo takes the hysterical woman to his house, only to discover that she may have been involved in the murder of her husband. He is bent on letting the woman stay at his home, even hiding her in a dog cage, when the police come lurking around his house searching for the woman. Things don’t turn out well for either of them, and although they have remained platonic, this changes when they seek help for a ride across the borELISABETH MOSS AND Boyd Holbrook try to find comfort der for safety. in each other’s miseries in “The Free World.” (Continued on page 13)

The National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum recently announced the recipients of the “2017 A. Philip Randolph “Gentle Warrior Awards” and the A. Philip Randolph “Change Agent Award.” The award honors both local and national figures. The event will take place February 18, 2017 in Chicago at the Historic Parkway Ballroom, 4455 S. King Drive on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00. For tickets visit WWW.GWA2017.Event brite.com. “The event is a celebration of two milestones for the museum. We are celebrating, the museum’s 22nd Anniversary and it is also the anniversary of the designation of the Pullman National Monument, where we are located,” said David Peterson, president of the museum. Gentle Warrior Award Honorees are: John Rogers, Ariel Investment, Congressman Danny K. Davis, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and David Doig, Chicago Neighborhood Initiative. The Change Agent Honorees: CBS Investigative team — Pam Zekman and Dave Savini, Brad Edwards; Melody Spann Cooper, Chairman WVON The Talk Radio; Diane Latiker, founder, Kids Off the Block; Erik Rico Nance, Owner, Litehouse Whole Food Grill and coowner of YDYR restaurant group. A recipient of the “Gentle Warrior Award” is viewed as one who
Diane Latiker is steadfast in their position with conviction, and who is willing to push against the boundaries of conventionality in much the same manner as Mr. Randolph did throughout his career. The transformative efforts forged by A. Philip Randolph remains to this day one of historic significance.” Peterson states, “that the APR Gentle Warrior Awards event is an opportunity to celebrate and honor individuals whose actions in their respective careers have consistently displayed the symbolism and characteristics of the legacy of A. Philip Randolph and The Brother-
hood of Sleeping Car Port- ers (BSCP). Both legacies were not only a slice of history, but they were interwoven into the fabric of this nation and labor movements around the world. Collectively they were “Change Agents.” The Pullman Company hired African-Americans to work as porters aboard their trains, and these porters became renowned for their outstanding service. Pullman Porters, as they came to be known, were organized into the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph in 1925. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was the first labor union led by African-Americans to receive a charter in the American Federation of Labor. Dr. Lyn Hughes, founder of the Chicago-based National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum stated, “This year, the event is particularly significant monetarily, for the museum. The proceeds from the event are targeted for two things: (1) provide funding that will enable us to complete phase two of the programing process of our 7,000 entry data base of African American Railroad employees. Doing so will enable us to create a self-funding base that will provide a financial base for the museum for decades to come. And (2) provided funds for Museum 44, “Where Hip Hop Meets History” our youth and young adult program division.

During their time together, even though she is a wreck because of the abuse, Doris finally calms down and is able to learn much about Mo and his conversion to Islam, how he was called a monster before his incarceration and religious conversion. Eventually, his good deed becomes undone, and Doris is charged and prosecuted for her husband’s death. Congressman Cedric Richmond brings bold new CBC Leadership (Continued from page 7) As part of Congressman Richmond’s leadership he has vowed to support the Black Press and Black Media throughout the country. He has formed an alliance with past National Newspaper Publishers Association Chairman Danny J. Bakewell, Sr., and NNPA President Benjamin Chavis, to insure that African American media is included and plays an active role in getting the message of what is going on in the national government to the communities that they serve. Congressman Richmond is a supporter of the Black Press and when asked why he feels it is necessary to take on this challenge the congressman had this to say: “Black Media and particularly the Black Press play an extraordinary role in getting our message out to our communities; print media especially plays an important role because the Black Press is highly regarded within our communities and people have a greater trust on the information that they receive via the Black Press.” Now that we no longer have a President (Obama) who can or is willing to call a press conference and get information out to our people, we must be strategic in working
with the Black Press to get our information and our story to the people. Congressman Richmond understands the power and role the federal government plays in supporting all media, and he feels that supporting the Black Press is a key tool in insuring that the African American Community is not ignored in this process. “The Federal Government Is the largest advertiser in the country and for us to ignore, not support, or cripple our Black newspapers would be a travesty. If we don’t advertise in the Black Press we are missing and not taking advantage of a way to communicate to the millions of African Americans throughout the country. We cannot allow the Black Press to go away or be weakened and I am committed to working with Danny Sr. and the NNPA to get the Federal Government more active in advertising in Black Newspapers.” Diversity is a word that in today’s political climate is thrown around in almost every government and corporate office, but rarely have we seen African Americans benefit from the roles or discussions about diversity. Chairman Richmond intends to hold everyone accountable to making sure African Americans are part
TELLING IT LIKE IT IS (Continued from page 10) The world’s second largest library, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., was given the HistoryMakers’ archives on analog tapes, DVD’s and documents in 2014, but the digital database that contains thousands of interview and information about Black America now has the potential to reach a wider audience of readers in Chicago, historically the bedrock of Black achievement in media, sports, music, entertainment, science and business. The HistoryMakers captured this success and preserved it for generations to come. Created in 1999, HistoryMakers is based in the South Loop. Its vast database includes interviews with more than 1,700 Blacks who gained fame and success by climbing the pinnacles in their fields. They include actress Whoopi Goldberg, Cedric the Entertainer, Ebony and Jet Founder John H. Johnson, Mogul Quincy Johnson, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and General Colin Powell. About 500 of the interviews are with Blacks who are from Chicago, like Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. Many of these successful Black pioneers were rarely interviewed when they were alive, but their achievements, stories and personalities are well-preserved in the HistoryMakers’ oral history database, which includes over 6,000 14
hours with more than 74,000 stories of triumph and struggles. While many of the subjects are famous, readers will also learn about successful Blacks who were not as well known. They include scientists, business executives and decorated military figures who became unsung heroes. Now, readers at the Chicago Public Library will learn about successful Blacks who were not just football players and entertainers. To access the digital files at the Chicago Public Library, readers must have a library card and login credentials. So far, users cannot access the HistoryMaker database from their own computer, but officials are working on that option. Excitement about the partnership with the public library filled a room on the 9th floor of the Harold Washington Library on February 3. Here the HistoryMakers’ founder and CEO Julieanna Richardson showed how library readers can use the HistoryMakers archive to a packed room of prominent Blacks, library executives and community leaders. “This morning felt like it was special,” Richardson said. “I think this project could not have been in any other city.” Deputy Mayor Andrea Zopp, who spoke on behalf of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, praised the collaboration. “It’s one thing to keep one’s history, but it’s another thing to tell it and share it.”

of this diversity discussion. “Just as we discuss and take diversity very seriously within the House in regards to employment, we must also lobby for diversity in advertising and take that just as seriously.” Chairman Richmond is not stopping at the Black Press in moving forward the agenda of the CBC. He recently met with the national leaders of most of the major African American Civil Rights Organizations and they have agreed to meet regularly to organize and function in unison to move forward the Black Agenda. “I have also reached out to the leaders of the major civil rights organizations across the country and we have agreed to meet regularly and work together to sustain and uphold the things that are important in sustaining a quality of life for African Americans. We have been through tough times before and this is no different.” When asked what is the agenda for his CBC administration the Chairman was not shy about what he intends to fight for and get done over the next two years. He said the goals of his administration are not much different than the agenda that the CBC has been fighting for since its inception. Restore the Voting Rights Act Create more economic opportunities for African Americans Fight for raising the minimum wage - We cannot allow these tax cuts for business to be on the backs of poor people We cannot not let this administra-
Congressman Cedric Richmond tion strip away the safety net which provides services and support for many of the people residing in our communities Chairman Richmond knows that raising the minimum wage is essential to creating a stronger foundation for families. “We want to work and find ways to preserve the family unit. We must fight for real criminal justice reform so that people are actually given a second chance and have real opportunities for employment so that they can live productive lives and create more stable family environments.” We cannot allow for injustice to occur as it relates to the Family Care Act (ObamaCare). 20/30 million people rely on this program to provide quality healthcare Right now we have a number of single parent households lead mainly by women who make 60 cents on the dollar in comparison to a man
Then we blast the teachers for not providing a quality education to the children. Well, how can a child get the support they need at home if the mother is working two jobs. She can’t help him with his homework, she can help him study for exams or make sure that he starts and ends each day with a good healthy meal. The income of parents plays a vital role in the wellbeing and cause and effect of the family unit. Congressman Cedric Richmond knows that the CBC will continue to fight for the same things we have been fighting for since our inception in 1971. “Unfortunately, it appears that President Trump does not take these things seriously so we must fight harder and not to allow the progress we have made go backwards and continue to make strides in moving our community forward.”
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Trump keeps becoming a bigger joke Dear Editor: Since my earliest memory, I was instructed by my elders to respect the office of the President of the United States, even if the person was elected from the party I did not vote for. There have been a handful of presidents whom I tried to ignore when they were in office. That brings me to our current president and for a number of reasons it is nearly impossible to ignore him. Not only does he say asinine things, he does even more that simply doesn’t make sense. His latest goof is to send 20 more Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm (ATF) agents into the city to try to deal with the violence problems we are having. I checked and found out that we already have 40 such agents stationed here. From looking over the ATF website I am at a complete loss as to why the president is sending them
(Continued from page 4) here, and what are they going to do. You can look for yourself and the website indicates nothing that positions them as a preventative agency. Over and over the site talks about the investigative work the agency does. Even someone who is as dull-witted as this president should understand that investigation comes after the fact and in no way prevents anything. He said he was sending in the Feds to help stop the “carnage” here. It is a waste of resources. As several people have already said, funds for jobs and jobs programs, as well as economic development dollars, will do far more to help stem the violence than a bunch of agents accustomed to chasing cigarette thieves. The reality though, is this is probably the best we will ever get from this administration. We have already found out how petty he is. There is little doubt in my mind he will continue to be non-supportive because the mayor and governor have both snubbed him. That was not very smart on their parts, knowing the tremendous needs Chicago has and how the Feds could conceivably help.
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
How many people outside of law enforcement even know there are 40 ATF agents in Chicago? What exactly do they do? It is obvious they aren’t preventing guns from getting into the wrong hands. They are not getting between shooters and the people they want to shoot. Sending another 20 agents just makes the Trump presidency a bigger joke than it already is. When it comes to dealing with the violence, the city must rely on itself. Some Black aldermen have proposed a $5 million budget allocation for agencies that are already involved in comprehensive anti-violence work. That would be a good start. It is becoming increasingly clear that we need money, jobs, educational opportunities and a commitment among ourselves to make a difference. We must do something in a hurry because killing “season” in Chicago is rapidly becoming a year round activity. Trump doesn’t get it, nor does he want to; so doing for self is the only option. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe God’s Grace. Grace is unmerited favor, generosity, benevolence, another chance and an undeserved gift from God to mankind. The great part is we do nothing to obtain this. Simply put, no one deserved this generosity and kindness from a loving merciful God. Too many people forget the source of all blessings and instead concentrate on the blessings. Knowing the source of your blessing is imperative to a balanced life. Whatever things you have been given are only temporary and can literally vanish at a moment’s notice. Myles Munroe reminded us to thank God for things but more so to be grateful for the God of the things. Things will come and things will go but God’s word, grace, mercy, love, faithfulness and goodness will stand forever. We used to sing a favorite church hymn in Arkansas with the following lyrics, ‘build your hopes on things eternal—hold to God’s unchanging hand.’ That beautiful home is now in foreclosure. The football captain is now an amputee. How was that terrific job with amazing benefits including company car and stock options now outsourced to India? Even your gorgeous face, shapely body, sound mind, 20/20 vision, keen hearing even your swag will eventually fade. In this life—things will come to throw you a curve ball or seemingly to get you
off course—no one is exempt. It is called life. One minute someone is on top of the world and the next minute the walls come tumbling down. There could be a myriad of circumstances to occur. The death of a loved one, sudden illness, betrayal of a best friend, an anointed Pastor in an extramarital affair or those considered the perfect couple now getting a divorce. Perhaps, a job loss a few years before retirement or your favorite celebrity has somehow fallen from grace. It can happen to anyone and at some point life will find a way to challenge you. Renowned Motivational Speaker, Les Brown would often ask, “What will you do if they fired you today? Do you have any savings or anything to fall back on?” He would then continue, “It’s not a matter of if—it’s a matter of when…? What are you doing to prepare…?” So it is with life—it’s not a matter of if life will present challenges, it’s a matter of when. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4). The point is—everything is TEMPORARY! Enjoy whatever you have right now and thank God every second of the day. Never frown on others, because we are all God’s

Leaders to Trump: come to Chicago with resources By Chinta Strausberg A number of community leaders and ministers including Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin and Rev. Jesse L. Jackson have asked President Donald Trump to come to Chicago in hopes of quelling the violence, but only if he brings needed resources such as jobs for at-risk youth. They made their remarks during a press conference jointly convened by Boykin and Jackson at the Austin Town Hall, 5610 West Lake St. They were joined by Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-7th), and many others. Boykin said, “We are virtually in a state of emergency here in Chicago. Austin…has become ground zero for the gun violence that exists….” Referring to the 800 people who were killed last year and 4400 shot, Boykin said, “the sad thing about this is that it is genocide.” He said 49 of the 59 people killed were Black; the others were Latinos. Commissioner Boykin, who conducted hearings on nine endangered communities said people want resources. “Poverty is the worst weapon of mass destruction but

poverty, self-hate and unemployment…above 20 percent in those communities … only add to the violence…the genocide.” Boykin said his Revitalization Act “will help to repair those relationships because if you got an officer on the block, they are not going to be dealing drugs on that block. That officer will have a stake in that community….” The bill calls for giving free homes to police officers, firefighters, teachers and paramedics. “It requires developers to use 30 percent of the residents from atrisk communities to do the rehab and to build the homes,” Boykin said, hoping that the Cook County Board passes his bill. Jackson, Boykin and Pastor Ira Acree, a former Hillary Clinton delegate, described Austin as the “epicenter” of gun violence. They made an appeal for Trump to come to Austin but not with more police, rather an economic investment in jobs and infrastructure. “The president can come and make a difference with an economic investment,” said Acree, but he wants Trump “not to use rhetoric but to provide resources.” Acree said “Chicago is a world
