Bishop Trotter, suburban police chiefs push anti-blunt wrap legislation By La Risa Lynch The war on drugs has a new target — flavored blunt wraps. Bishop Larry Trotter, pastor of Sweet Holy Spirit Church, has joined forces with south suburban law enforcement to pressure state legislators to include flavored blunt wrap in the state’s illegal drug paraphernalia code. “Blunts wraps are an indefensible product marketed to children and entirely identified with illegal drug use,” Trotter said last week during a press conference to garner support for two bills seeking to classify blunt wraps as drug paraphernalia. Blunt wrappers is a roll-your-own cigar wrap made from tobacco leaves similar to regular cigarette rolling paper. Trotter contends the flavored blunt wraps target teens. The wraps, he said, are found in any corner stores and cost under a dollar making it affordable and accessible for youth. To illustrate, several parishioners purchased “blunt wraps” at a liquor store near the church, located at 8621 S. South Chicago Ave. “It’s available in every community and young people are buying them,” he said. “It is a good camouflage for them to get high and make it appear that it is just a cigar.” State Senator Kwame Raoul, sponsor of
Senate Bill 3734, said his bill does not target blunt cigars, but go after specifically manufactured fruity flavored tobacco leafs that come packaged wrapped around hol-
lowed tubes. Raoul’s bill passed out of the Senate Monday (March 15) and moves to the House. State Rep. Art Turner has a companion bill HB 6234 in the House.

Trotter holds up blunt cigars, which he said youth are using to process illicit drugs.
“I really don’t know anybody who smokes cigars who is going to put tobacco in a mango flavored wrapper,” Raoul said, noting teens could be enticed by these wraps because they are flavored with names like cherry vanilla and apple bliss. However, Lanz Alexander, chief financial officer, for New Image Global, a California-based company that makes cigar wrappers, said that his product has been mischaracterized. His company is one of three that make cigar wraps. “Blunt wraps,” he contend, is a trademarked name of a Louisiana-based company. His company, Alexander noted, makes both flavored and unflavored cigar wrappers that are sold with flavored and unflavored loose tobacco to customize cigars. He noted the roll-you-own cigar industry has been around for 200 years. He contends the proposed legislation targets his cigar wrappers specifically, not cigarette roll paper or blunt cigars, which also could be used illicitly. “If you have three products that are misused, why do you just talk about one product rather than the other two,” Alexander asked, noting that the bill was initiated by a north suburban cigarette paper company to eliminate competition. Raoul said that he is aware of the competition argument, but still insists that there is not legal use for these wrappers which (Continued on page 2)

Haiti debt relief bill authored by Congresswoman Maxine Waters passes the House From Port-au-Prince to the Capitol to the White House, she continues to lead efforts to help Haiti recover and rebuild The House of Representatives passed the Debt Relief for Earthquake Recovery in Haiti Act (H.R. 4573), authored by Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), last night. This legislation directs the United States to seek the cancellation of Haiti’s debts to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB) and other multilateral development institutions. The Senate is expected to adopt the Congresswoman’s bill this week, clearing the way for President Obama to sign it into law. “I am pleased that my bill to cancel Haiti’s debt held by multilateral development institutions is set to become law. Debt relief is essential for Haiti’s future. However, we must also keep in mind the immediate needs of survivors who, without adequate shelter, will be further subjected to the elements and to disease during the upcoming rainy season. I applaud the efforts of our government, military, and charitable organizations for the assistance they have provided thus far, and I will be doing everything in my power to continue to work with them to alleviate the suffering and
attend to the basic needs of the Haitian people.” Having returned from Haiti earlier this week – her second trip there since the earthquake in January – the Congresswoman continues to sound the alarm about the need to urgently provide more shelter to the hundreds of thousands of Haitians whose homes were destroyed. Many Haitians are living outdoors in makeshift camps, and the upcoming rainy season is putting them at greater risk of flooding and disease. The Congresswoman has repeatedly called on the international community to deliver and distribute durable tents to Haitians and has raised the issue with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other officials. “My second trip to Haiti since the earthquake only reaffirms what I’ve long known – the situation for hundreds of thousands of homeless Haitians is going to rapidly deteriorate when the heavy rains and hurricanes soon begin,” said Congresswoman Waters. “Malaria, typhoid, scabies and other highly infectious and deadly diseases are going to spread like wildfire unless a comprehensive plan is implemented to acquire thousands more durable shelter units and set them up safely, sustainably, and immediately.” During her trip to Haiti last weekend, Congresswoman Waters: • Met with the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth Merten, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
Congresswoman Maxine Waters plies to Cité Soleil, the poorest neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, an area where residents have received little or no assistance from relief groups since the earthquake; • Reviewed a food distribution operation in Pétionville led by a non-governmental organization; • Toured a large camp that is housing approximately 12,000 survivors and was taken by locals to a camp unknown to relief workers where 700 people live. After Congresswoman Waters alerted USAID of the camp’s presence, USAID entered the camp into its database so it could be evaluated and will receive relief supplies moving forward; • Discussed contracting opportunities for local workers with 150 Haitian business leaders and the USAID Contract-
ing Officer, and reviewed some of the “jobs for cash” programs currently under way; • Visited a temporary shelter demonstration site, showcasing different forms of shelter; • Attended a “cluster” meeting at Bo-Jeux Parc where recovery and response efforts are coordinated and saw an army-grade medical tent she secured during her previous visit to Haiti being used by medical care providers to deliver babies; and • Brought a U.S. seismologist to the country to study aftershocks and share information
with Haitians about the potential for future disasters and what can be done to prevent widespread devastation. “What really resonated with me during this trip was the stark reality of just how long it will take Haiti to recover and rebuild,” said Congresswoman Waters. “Many areas of Port-au-Prince are still not being regularly serviced by relief workers – and some camps are subsisting completely on their own. The coordination and organizational efforts are clearly under way, but I am well aware that it remains a work-inprogress. Much more must be done to provide all Haitians with food and clean water, secure shelter, and economic livelihood.” Congresswoman Waters was among a select group of Members of Congress at an event yesterday at the White House with President Obama and Haitian President René Prevál, having been invited in recognition of her leadership on assistance for Haiti. Also attending were representatives of non-governmental organizations and foundations involved in the relief effort, Haitian-American community leaders and members of Urban Search and Rescue teams from Los Angeles and other cities.
Judiciary Committee reports Durbin’s Fair Sentencing Act Bipartisan compromise reduces Crack-Powder sentencing disparity to 20:1 A bipartisan bill to curtail the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine was unanimously reported out of the Senate Judiciary Committee recently by a vote of 19-0. The Fair Sentencing Act, introduced by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (DIL) was amended by the Judiciary Committee and will reduce the current 100:1 sentencing disparity to roughly 20:1. “Drug use is a serious problem in America and we need tough legislation to combat it,” Durbin said. “But in addition to being tough, our drug laws must be smart and fair. Sadly our crack cocaine laws are not. I strongly support eliminating the crackpowder disparity and establishing the same sentences for crack and powder cocaine. But this is an issue that requires a bipartisan solution. Today’s historic agreement will make a significant difference 2

der cocaine triggers the same sentence. The so-called 100:1 ratio has been in place since 1986. The Fair Sentencing Act as introduced would have completely eliminated the disparity, treating crack and powder cocaine equally. Durbin negotiated the agreement with Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to achieve a unanimous committee vote. The language agreed to would establish a roughly 20:1 ratio for crack-powder sentencing meaning a 28 grams of crack would trigger the same mandatory minimum sentence as 500 grams of powder cocaine. The compromise significantly increases fines for drug traffickers and mandates that the U.S. Sentencing Commission significantly increase enhancements for a number of aggravating factors. This tough new language would apply to all drug offenses and not just those involving crack or powder cocaine.

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Merrigan highlights the ‘Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food’ Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan recently provided highlights of how Illinois can tap into USDA’s ‘Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food’ initiative, which promotes local and regional food systems by stimulating community economic development and ensuring equitable access to affordable fresh and local food. Merrigan discussed the initiative with students at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, spoke at the Financing Farm to Fork Conference aimed at supporting local foods by encouraging investment in farm and food production, processing, and distribution businesses, and discussed food systems policy with students and community leaders at DePaul University. “The Obama Administration believes this is an historic opportunity to lay a new foundation for economic growth, create jobs and build and revitalize critical infrastructure in rural communities across America by supporting and establishing local and regional food systems as an economic development strategy to keep wealth in local communities,” Merrigan said. “Part of our ‘Know Your Farmer, Know Your
Food’ initiative is to link the agricultural community to urban markets to bring new understanding of the importance of healthy eating and provide enhanced access to fresh foods. We expect consumer demand for locally grown food in the U.S. to rise from an estimated $4 billion in 2002 to as much as $7 billion by 2012.” USDA’s ‘Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food’ initiative emphasizes the need for a fundamental and critical reconnection between producers and consumers. The effort builds on the 2008 Farm Bill, which provides for increases and flexibility for USDA programs in an effort to revitalize rural economies through the promotion local food systems. Aimed at strengthening the connection between farmers and consumers, the initiative also supports local and regional food systems, increase economic opportunities for local farmers, and expand access to healthy food for Americans. One example of how farmers can get involved, Merrigan said, is to participate in local farm to school programs that enable schools to feature healthy, locallysourced products in their cafete-

Clergy Coming to Capitol Hill to Push Bill Declaring AIDS an ‘Epidemic’ Among Blacks The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLCA) will lead more than 50 influential members of the clergy to Congress on March 17 to push for approval of H.R. 1964/S. 3011, the National Black Clergy for the Elimination of HIV/AIDS Act of 2009. The bill lays out a comprehensive plan for the federal government to lead the way in marshaling resources in the fight against HIV and AIDS and targeting them where they are most needed. The campaign comes at a critical time as the Obama Administration has been working intensely on its National AIDS Strategy for several months. One of NBLCA’s key goals is to make sure that the policy that emerges recognizes the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on Black America. NBLCA Board Chairman Rev. Calvin O. Butts III said Black leaders have long urged greater attention to the AIDS toll on African Americans. He noted that the nation last month marked the 10th anniversary of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a day established to call attention to the problem of HIV/AIDS among Black Americans. “We as a nation recognized long ago that HIV and AIDS are at crisis The Chicago Crusader

The National Black Clergy for the Elimination of HIV/AIDS Act of 2009 emerged out of a 2007 conclave organized by NBLCA that brought together clergy, medical experts and others from around the country to develop an agenda to fight HIV and AIDS. Rep. Rangel introduced the legislation into the House in April of 2009, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (DNY) introduced it into the Senate in February. “This is the first legislation to address HIV/AIDS in a comprehensive way, and although it reflects the wisdom and experience of health experts and community leaders, it is significant that Black clergy are leading the fight,” said C. WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH March is Women’s History Month. The honoring of Women began with the first International Women’s Day in 1911. In 1979, the school district of Sonoma, California, participated in Women’s History Week, an event designed around the week of March 8 (International Women’s Day). In 1981, responding to the growing popularity of the event, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Women’s History Week. This week was well received, and soon after, schools across the country began to have their own local celebrations. Other state departments of education began to encourage celebrations of National Women’s History Week as a way to promote equality among the sexes in the classroom. In 1987 Congress expanded the focus to a whole month. In 2001, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland) co-sponsored the first Joint Congressional Resolution proclaiming a “Women’s History Month”. (Wikipedia). Today, Women’s History Month is celebrated all over the United States. Honoring women became necessary because a lot of people just weren’t aware of the contributions women have made, and continue to make, to society. Everyone recognizes the role that women play as mothers, but actually, many people, especially men, felt that women’s value started and stopped at that point. It’s hard to believe that at one time women were not allowed to vote or to own property. Fortunately, today, there is a growing appreciation of the wide range of roles that women play in today’s society. It is heartening to see social growth of his magnitude, where people come to understand the important contributions of a segment of the population. It’s interesting that people didn’t always understand the value of women because, if people had paid attention, there have always been dynamic women who have contributed to a variety of important causes in America and around the world. Among African Americans, the earlier heroines responsible for racial progress included Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Madame C.J. Walker, just to name a few. Today, we can cite Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Dorothy Height, Whoopie Goldberg, Fannie Lou Hamer, Angela Davis, Nikki Giovanni, Sonja Sanchez, Dorothy Leavell, Linda Johnson Rice, Melody Spann Cooper, Dr. Carol Adams, Valerie Jarrett, Rep. Constance “Connie” Howard, Shirley Chisholm, Dr. Margaret Burroughs, First Lady Michelle Obama, Cheryle Jackson and many other women too numerous to name! We look forward to the day when all “isms,” such as sexism, racism, etc. disappear. Until that time, however, we will continue a need to set aside special time to focus on certain segments of the population in order to realize their importance to the functioning of society. Please take time to consider the huge contributions women have made to American society and to the world this month! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No more parking meters in front of churches Dear Editor: Angry: I believe there are many other church members who are as angry as I am over the new arrangements the Mayor has made by privatizing the parking meters. I thought the meters main purpose were to help business; keep people from staying in front of a business too long which would hurt business and that would cause less taxes for the city. The new set up is during much harm to the churches I felt hurt and disgusted coming out of the Israel Methodist Community Church January 25th and seeing a parking ticket on my car which was parked in front of the church. Many people still don’t know it, under the new rule you can get a parking ticket for parking in front of a church, if you are in a prayer meeting, choir rehearsal, business meeting or any other type of meeting. The pastor has to pay the meter all day in order to keep his office open all day. To all of us who are affected, we should not just talk among ourselves about how disgusted and hurt we are. Write and let Mayor Daley know and demand he change it. Dr. Webb Evans President

I am Woman I support Bill Brady! Dear Editor: On March 9th several women’s groups held a pres conference to denounce gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady’s positions on “women’s issues.” His position on abortion bothers them, calling him “anti-choice” and “anti-woman.” He believes that babies are human beings and not a “choice,” deserving of a chance at life. As a mother of three and grandmother of two, I wholeheartedly agree. They erroneously claim he is opposed to stem cell research, which is false. HE supports using adult stem cells, which are already successfully treating many life-threatening diseases. The truth is that he opposes wasting money on embryonic stem cell research, which to date, has not produced one successful treatment for any disease. Brady is right on both the ethical and the financial aspect. Then there’s his position on marriage. He believes that one man and one woman constitutes a marriage. These groups would like to redefine it to suit their agenda, which is the normalization and acceptance of homosexuality. To accomplish this,

they want “same-sex” marriage. Bill Brady sponsored the Marriage Amendment and that obviously upsets them. It’s worth mentioning that today’s Rasmussen poll has Brady leading among women by 17 points. As a woman, these groups certainly do not speak for me. I will support Bill Brady for Governor. BEYOND THE RHETORIC
It is Time for a New National Organization By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist As we see during this current recession, there is an inordinate amount of unemployment in the African-American community. Our net worth is decreasing by al-

doesn’t have to be that way. Many current organizations say we need more job training. That is ridiculous. We are already trained but the fact is we have been laid off the jobs we know how to do. What is training going to do? We need these jobs back. No organization is looking at the key issue. That is implementing Executive Order 11246, written by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, and the enforcer of affirmative action in the workplace. There was a time when the federal government, through the U.S .Department of Labor, would be the key enforcer. President Clinton’s first Secretary of Labor, Richard Reich, was a strong leader in the field. He would actively challenge corporate America in its hiring of minorities. He even kept a list, “The Bottom Ten”, where he would badger the worst minority hirers and even take them to court. Coca Cola, Bank of America, Honeywell and others met his wrath and changed their ways reluctantly. President Clinton got a lot of pressure to stop Secretary Reich from his noble campaign. Eventually, as the second Clinton Administration came in Secretary Reich resigned rather than slow
down. His successor did not attempt to emulate him and do the right thing. The advocacy for diversity in hiring soon went away from the federal government and has not returned since. The data is kept but the action is no longer enforced. Thus, we need an outside organization that will be a true watchdog on the issue of equal opportunity in the workplace. An organization that will encourage the Office of Federal Contract Compliance (U.S. Department of Labor) to publish the data they gather from all corporations and governmental agencies so that the organization can take the bad operators to task and praise the good operators. A very good focus in the beginning would be, through the Freedom of Information Act, to get the racial and gender data on the construction union trades. Any way you look at all trades except general laborers and cement workers; you will detect Jim Crow style racism. The biggest shock is that the U.S. Department of Labor certifies these unions as bargaining groups even though they blatantly violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It is an oversight we can no longer afford and should deal with it directly. Many tradi-
tional civil rights organizations actually support this racism with their friendliness towards these racist construction unions in exchange for a little annual funding. It hurts us tremendously - just look at the unemployment figures. This organization should be vibrant and could spawn at the collegiate level in the law schools of our campuses. They should be very high tech via internet activity and should rate all major corporations by the amount of Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and women that they hire, promote and retain at all levels of management. These reports should be updated continuously and should be widely reported so that society can intelligently decide who to buy products from and support in other ways. Also, the organization should not be afraid to call itself Black – and be proud of that fact. If it is done correctly we can force into destruction corporations who do not do the right thing; unions who fester bigotry and governmental entities who are not accountable to the people they serve. The unemployment levels of Blacks, Hispanics and other minorities should no longer
soar above the national average and equal opportunity can once again return to reality. Somehow, we have let it get away from our focus and our children are suffering from that negligence. Remember, it doesn’t take many people to get a movement going. In this new Internet society it won’t take many people or much money. We just need good unselfish leadership and a strong Agenda to follow. Black America is at a crossroads. Our “leaders” are called to the White House only during a blizzard when the federal government is closed down. The Congressional Black Caucus can only get attention during “Colored Caucus Day” when they and the Hispanic Caucus are allowed to come in one behind the other and kick around the Healthcare Bill (not the issue of jobs). New leaders! It is time to step forward and begin a new era that will save our people who are being led down a very vile and dangerous path. Reducing the Black Male Dropout Rate By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Boys don’t drop out in the 12th grade. They physically drop out in the ninth grade, but they emotionally and academically drop out in the fourth grade. That observation is made early by Jawanza Kunjufu, a noted educator, public speaker and publisher, in his new book, Reducing the Black Male Dropout Rate (African American Images, Chicago, 708/672-4909) He issues this challenge to readers: “Visit a kindergarten class and observe Black boys in action. They’re eager, they sit in the front, they’re on task. They love learning.” But something happens by the time they reach the ninth grade. Kunjufu says approximately 100,000 African-American males drop out of high school each year; in some urban areas the black male rate approaches 70 percent. Even a high school drop-out can calculate that rate amounts to 1 million Black males over 10 years. That 10year figure is larger than the total population of Detroit, Atlanta, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Boston, Charlotte, Denver, Bal-
timore, Memphis or New Orleans. In his book, Kunjufu provides a lesson plan for reducing the horrendous Black drop-out rate. The turnaround must begin in the home. He notes that schools have students only 9 percent of the time from infancy to 18 years of age. Parents, on the other hand, have students far more longer and must do a far better job of creating the right intellectual atmosphere at home. “Parents, I’d like for you to do an inventory of your home,” Kunjufu writes. “Count the number of books you have vs. the number of CDs and DVDs. That will, in part, explain your child’s academic performance.” He adds, “What you have in your house determines the kind of student that comes out of your house.” Parents should also take firm control of their homes. The author scoffs at the idea of a child telling parents paying rent or a mortgage: “You have no right to go into my room.” Parents not only have the right to go anywhere in their house, they should also exercise the right to inspect their child’s room at anytime. They should also listen to their

children’s music and check out their friends. “Parents, if you don’t do anything else, you need to know your children’s friends. You can tell an awful lot about your child by his selection of friends. Many parents believe their sons are angels. You need to observe your son’s friends in action. Invite them over to your house. Meet the parents of your son’s friends. Why is this so important? Because the peer group is the number one influence on African American males.” Because of that influence, parents should know where their
children are during the crucial hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., when children are most likely to get into trouble. Poor parents should not expect their children’s performance levels to be lower than those from rich families. “Wealthy parents don’t have smarter kids than the poor and working poor, than Blacks or Latinos, but what they perhaps do better is insist that the school do its job better no matter what it takes,” Kunjufu believes. He notes that because African Americans suffer from PTSD – Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder – it is crucial that Black males be exposed to culturally-relevant learning materials. Another suggestion is better recognition of academic achievement. “If you have an assembly program of 500 students but are giving out two awards, there’s a very good chance that African-American males will call those two students nerds,” Kunjufu explains. “A more effective assembly program would honor many students. If a student moves from a D to a C, he should receive an award. If he moves from a C to an A, he receives two awards. In this Saturday, March 20, 2010
way, it is very possible that all 500 students will receive an award and just maybe the students will buy into academic achievement.” Educators should not buy into the notion of social promotions, the act of promoting nonachieving students to the next grade. “I acknowledge the pain students must endure when they are held back,” Kunjufu says. “But the pain is even greater when, in the ninth grade, they are trying to get through the school day with a fourth-grade reading level.” Churches and community groups also have a role to play in reducing the drop-out rate. “The most important institution in the African American community is the church, and there are 85,000 African American churches,” the author writes. “The One Church, One School program created the concept that churches should sponsor or adopt schools in their community. Can you imagine if each of the 85,000 churches adopted a school? There are some 15,000 elemen(Continued on page 6) 5

This meeting attracted attention and put the word Pan African in the dictionaries for the first time.” According to Dr. Clarke there were only thirty delegates to the conference that came mainly from England, the Caribbean, and the United States. Dr. W. E. B. DuBois led the small delegation from the United States. When we use the term Pan Africanism we must be very clear. Pan Africanism is the belief that people of African ancestry throughout the world have the same racial and cultural characteristics and the same social and economic conditions as a result of our African origin. The Pan African component of the Reparations Movement 6
launched its first international conference on Reparations in Lagos, Nigeria in December of 1990. After that conference, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) set up a Group of Eminent Persons (GEP), in June 1992. Its aim was to work out the different ways in which to proceed, and secure technical advisors, who would help solve some of the difficulties associated with the claim for reparations. A second conference on Reparations was held in Abuja, Nigeria in 1992, attended by representatives from throughout the Diaspora. That conference issued a declaration, “The Abuja Proclamation,” which called for a national reparations committee to be established throughout Africa and the Diaspora. The African Reparations Movement (UK) was formed in 1993, as a result of this proclamation. It is important that we understand that the idea of Reparations has caught on with the masses of African people worldwide, in spite of the opposition of the forces of white supremacy. A delegation from the United States, led by the late Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers and Dr. Ron Walters, participated in Abuja’s First Pan African Conference and reported back to the leaders of the Reparations Movement, in this country, their observations and analysis of the conference. As we think about Pan Africanism and continue our struggle, let us reflect on the contributions of our ancestor, Malcolm X. We must remember his role in helping to stimulate the Pan African Movement that we stand on today as we fight for Reparations for African people throughout the world. In Malcolm’s last visit to Africa before his untimely departure from us, he visited the President of Ghana; Osagyefo Dr. Kwamé Nkrumah. Malcolm gave this account of the meeting in his autobiography. Malcolm said, “We discussed the unity of Africans and people of African descent. We agreed that Pan Africanism was the key also to the problems of

those of African heritage… My time with him was up all too soon. I promised faithfully that when I returned to the United States, I would relay to AfroAmericans his personal warm regards.” There is no doubt that the spirit of Malcolm and other great Pan African leaders are helping to push the Reparations Movement forward. “The Abuja Proclamation” should be the basis for our continued organizing of the Reparations Movement throughout the world. These ideas are still relevant to our organizing work in the Reparations Movement today. The following are some of the key points presented in “The Abuja Proclamation: on April 27-29, 1993: “Recalling the Organization of African Unity’s establishment of a Machinery the Group of Eminent Persons for appraising the reparations in relation to the damage done to Africa and its Diaspora by enslavement, colonization, and neo-colonialism. Convinced that the issue of reparations is an important question requiring the united action of Africa and its Diaspora and worth of the active support of the rest of the international community. Fully persuaded that the damage sustained by the African peoples is not a thing of the past but is painfully manifest in the damaged lives of contemporary Africans from Harlem to Harare, in the damaged economies of the Black World from Guinea to Guyana, from Somalia to Surinam. Cognizant of the fact that compensation for injustice need not necessarily be paid in capital transfer but could include service to the victims or other forms of restitution and readjustment of the relationship to both parties. Convinced that the claim for Reparations is well grounded in International Law.” We must always remember what Dr. Clarke taught us and that is, “powerful people never teach powerless people how to take power away from them!” Reparations for African people will never die!
By Ron Walters NNPA Columnist Now we have the Coffee Party which I suppose is a liberal counterpart to the Tea Party that emerged in the Washington, DC area by folks led by Annabel Park a documentary film maker who was horrified by the ugly, menacing and anti-government spirit of the Tea Party crowd that emerged to disrupt the flow of civil discussion about important issues. I’ve been asking, where are the folks who voted for Barack Obama, believing in Hope and Change and pinning for a new post-Bush, post-Conservative America. Well, many of the ground troops of the Obama movement that were responsible for its grass roots organizing were young adults who went back to school, back to their professional desks or somewhere back to their normal pursuits, but away from politics. In their de-mobilization, they left the field open to the crazies who have mounted a movement not designed to be a force for change, but for the status quo and even for retrogression, wanting to “take back America” from a future they fear. Organizing for Change, the organization created as the repository of the Obama campaign, has largely been ineffective in my evaluation and David Plouffe, its head and Obama’s campaign manager, has recently gone into the White House. So, what is developing is a discussion at the level of communities across the country about the role of government and the Tea Party and now the Coffee Party are instruments of civic organizing in this process. The Republican party seems to be attempting to grab hold of the Tea Party movement and turn it into an election day force against Democrats vulnerable
Ron Walters to elections in this cycle, At this point, the Coffee party has not come that far and the Democratic party has not made its move. Where does this put Blacks? There is a healthy discussion going on in the black community about the role of President Obama and his responsibility, or the lack of it, to the Black community but with the exception of Tavis Smiley for all the folks who believe that they have to make him accountable to a black agenda, they have not yet put a mechanism on the ground to do it. There has been a long discussion about the efficacy of a Black political party and many years ago, I joined Ron Daniels and others in an attempt to create one. The irony of that experiment was while half of the people attracted to the idea wanted it to serve as a powerbase for elections, others wanted to only exist as a grass roots organizing tool. It eventually split apart along those lines. Today, it is clear, however, that beyond the general discussion about accountability, there needs to be not only a place where you get down to the “nuts and bolts” about exactly who should be accountable about what, but how to develop effective methodologies of tactics and strategies to achieve it. Thus, whether you call it a party or a (Continued on page 15)

THE RUMOR MILL Folk is sho’ talking in the beauty shop about a corruption case that disappeared from the newspapers involving the son of a well known politician, a rich white boy, and a black female hot shot. Folks want to know what happened since March 2008 when it first came out—were these folk sent to prison, was there a plea or were the charges dropped. The situation, involving $68 million in pension funds may be the reason why the chief investigator got out of dodge and pretended to run for office and one person ran overseas to drink vodka all night. Chicago is a strange kind of town. -ImaTHE GREEN EYED MONSTER Now that all the dust has settled behind Chicago socialite Desiree Rogers resigning from her post as chief party promoter in the Big House it seems nosy white folks
Desiree Rogers and some of Rogers’ disgruntled friends are beginning to tell the full story about why she joined the ranks of the unemployed. Her being forced out had little to do with two ofays and a Negro imposter crashing some shin dig with the Indian prime minister. Ima told you peoples way back when this gal was first appointed, this move was gonna be a problem. We couldn’t see no Desiree Rogers being nobody’s flunky, mammy or somebody’s secretary—not after living high on the hog all her upper class life. It turns out Ima was on de right trail. The Chicago Crusader
THE CHATTERBOX
Now folks is saying Rogers was forced out her good government job because she outshined the First Lady every single day she walked the grounds of Pennsylvania Avenue. They say folks close to the Obammys started pulling their coat tail after a full spread on Rogers appeared in some rag called the Wall Street Journal Magazine last December. The five page spread showed Rogers looking all glamorous and walking all over some the planted flowers in FLOTUS’ garden. Not even Ima would have stepped on the lady’s plants. The bizarre tall tale even mentioned how she was a relative of some voodoo priestess down in New Orleans. They say that was the beginning of the unraveling of the friendship between the two women. It looks like de green eyed monster soon possessed FLOTUS’ body and after she observed how every time Rogers walked into a room everybody said “ooh and “ahh.” The former ComEd executive is known for her great legs, while Michelle was trying to be known for her great arms. Now which one you think mens want to look at? Then one late night de First Woman got to recalling what happened under the desk during the Clinton administration so she got all paranoid about any strange thoughts that might be creeping through POTUS’ over active mind. The first thang she done the next day was limit Rogers access to all De President’s men and then after that she ain’t get too much time with Mrs. President either. She then got left out of meetings, wasn’t invited to private parties by the two and if that ain’t enough got shut down publicly in front of staff. Not hearing the message, they say the voodoo grandchild still ran around Washington in Oscar de la Renta gowns while her First Lady best girlfriend was still sporting stuff off the rack—so she could connect with the American people. You see certain kinds of white folks worked real hard to create a public image for the Obammy’s and the one for the Mrs. meant that she sometimes look comely in order to identify with broke women but at night time she would turn into a diva and wow the socks off the rich social crowd and create some sort of national fantasy—sort of like Claire Huxtable meets Naomi Campbell. Same with De President. Sometimes he got to be seen playing ball in beat up gym shoes and walking around in khaki pants with his rolled up sleeves—then at night time, he ‘spose to get all dolled up like a Black George Clooney. What gets Ima goat is how this child was kicked to the curb for doing exactly what they brought
her to town to do—open doors of the rich, white and Jewish social scene and turn the White House into the Taste Entertainment Center. Instead of being patted on the back for doing so, she got the shaft from her best friend. But we hear this story is only just now unfolding. And, when we finds out the goods Ima will be sure to tell it. -Ima-

MAIL BAG THE MEETING Dear Ima: Ordinarily I dismiss the imbecilic rants the Crusader prints of yours as a concession to the more ignorant of your readers who do not recognize that this is satire, not based on any reality. An Alabama preacher suggested to his flock that they could beautify the surroundings by erecting a white picket fence around the burial plot in the back of de church. “I object!,” hollered one of the church stewards. “State yo’ objections, effn ya got some,” the preacher fired back. “This just a waste of church folk tithes,” he said again. The preacher got hot in the face and said, “How say you?” The steward stood up and said “Well in de first place, ain’t nobody in that cemetery can get out no how, and in the second place, I don’t know nobody studying ‘bout how to get in!” -ImaTAVIS TALKS

However, Ima is somewhat confused that in all of your brilliant observation you ain’t understand we was also pulling your chain by saying the Lt. Governor’s mansion was in Peoria. College-Bound: Urban Prep announces 100 percent of first graduating class accepted to a four-year college or university Students have received more than $2.2 million in scholarships and grants to date The students at Urban Prep Academies, the nation’s first allboys public charter high school and comprised entirely of African-American males, have achieved what some thought would be impossible – 100 percent of its first senior class has been accepted to college. In an all-school assembly Friday morning, Urban Prep founder and CEO Tim King announced to the students that they reached their 100 percent goal. Mayor Richard M. Congratulations to Urban Prep’s senior class for meeting their goal of 100 percent of students being accepted to college.” Seniors, dressed in their uniform of black blazers and khaki pants, exchanged their red ties for a special red and gold striped version as they received college acceptance letters over the last few months. At the ceremony, the seniors most recently admitted to college were presented with their new red and gold striped ties. “When these students entered Urban Prep as freshmen in 2006, only four percent were reading at grade level, and according to the

“I applaud them for their dedication, and I congratulate them on this outstanding achievement,” said Senator Burris. “But, most of all, this is a testimony to the students of Englewood - and all the other communities in Chicago – who broke the cycle and proved that they do have the talent, the skill and the drive to

2nd Annual United Way Coat Drive wraps up Southland children in warmth Marching to the beat of a different drummer an end of the season effort to raise awareness about helping others and increasing their volunteer base has accomplished a major goal. Southland children received over 100 new winter coats in spectacular colors and a wide variety of sizes at SouthSouthwest Suburban United Way’s 2nd Annual Children’s Coat Drive. Most of the coats were generously donated by a local clothing retailer that wishes to remain anonymous. However, employees from the Bank of America branch on 167th Street in Country Club Hills also donated some coats to the cause.
This year’s children’s coat drive was held at the Kids Health Club in Lincoln Mall. The NEW Four-One-One
ENTERTAINMENT
By Raymond Ward GOLD SOUL MUSIC: The 60s and 70s rhythm and blues songs of The Four Tops, Otis Redding and The Supreme’s, among others, became a global phenomenon and has inspired a new generation of artists who are reviving the classic soul sound. Now, Puntunmayo’s newest release, “RHYTHM & BLUES,” features first generation soul legends and rising stars of the retro R&B revival. Reaching mainstream popularity in the 1950s, rhythm and blues sprung from the rugged roots of blues and gospel music, pairing soulful vocals with pop sensibilities. While in recent years R&B has become more closely associated with rap and hip hop legends and young artists are recreating the sound and mood of the genre’s glory days. New Orleans is the birthplace of R&B and on Rhythm & Blues Crescent City legends Snooks Eaglin, Irma Thomas and Rockie Charles join other first generation soul artists Lavelle White, The Emotions and Sam Moore (of the classic soul duo Sam & Dave). Moore unites generations in a collaboration with Keb’ Mo’ and Angie Stone on the Willie DixonOtis Redding penned, Howlin’ Wo lf/Koko Taylor classic, “Wang Dang Doodle,” a track produced by “American Idol’s” Randy Jackson. Rhythm & Blues features songs by other contemporary artists including British musician James Hunter, who blends intricate guitar licks with an Otis Redding-like wail on “Til Your Fool Comes Home.” On “100 Days,100 Nights,” Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings deliver a deeply stirring performance that reflects the pain of the lyrics. The Quantic Soul Orchestra mixes rhythm and blues with elements of reggae and Latin jazz in their cover version of the Marion Black classic, “Who Knows.” Jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell and New York collective Cracked Ice round out this collection of rhythm and blues that is “guaranteed to make you feel good.” Rhythm & Blues is now available at your favorite record store or wherever you purchase your music. Well, last Sunday morning, I was “channelsurfing” and came across a “news/talk show” I had NEVER seen entitled “Perspectives” on UPN which is hosted by Monique Carradine Kitchens. The guest on this show was Zondra Hughes who is the “author” of a book titled, “Living The Ebony Life: E-Mails From The Plantation.” Ms. Hughes is a former employee of Ebony Magazine who was “let go” and is now making all sorts of accusations about the company she formerly worked for. Pay attention....here’s where it gets good! ( Although I missed the first half of the program, this is what I gathered) Ms. Hughes claims that her book “shares” copies of internal emails that were sent to Ebony & Jet staffers by “The Man” which 12

Our Family Wedding
LANCE GROSS, AMERICA Ferrera, Regina King, Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia in "Our Family Wedding." Our Family Wedding is such a refreshing movie about race relations, even though it’s wrapped around the romance and pending wedding of a Latina and an African-American male. Sort of in the tradition of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, but without the deep political speeches made by the late Spencer Tracy and the esteemed veteran Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier. Previous Oscar winner Forest Whitaker joins a zany cast that includes America Ferrara, who plays Lucia Ramirez, Carlos Mencia, who plays Miguel Ramirez, Lance Gross, who plays Marcus, and Regina King. And to watch Whitaker play a lighthearted role—a talk show host playboy named Brad Boyd at that—was great! Just watching him in his home that looked as if it came straight out of a Dania catalogue,
his fly wardrobe and superfly sports cars, as well as a leaner body, took my breath away. The movie begins with Brad’s car being towed away by Miguel, who owns a towing company. There’s friction at this first meeting, because Brad holds on for dear life, while Miguel is driving his car away. There’s also some cultural friction, with both men—who are egoistical bullheads—exchanging a few choice words, playing off of each others ethnicity. Fast forward a couple of days, and we have the daughter whom Miguel is expecting to come home from college and the young man that she brings along just happening to be Brad’s son. King plays Angela, a good friend of Brad and his son, who’s been with Brad through thick and thin, after Brad and Marcus’ mother di-
caused her tenure at Johnson Publising Company to be a “living hell!” She also claims that “light-skinned” Black employees were treated better than dark-skinned employees, ....writers and editors were NOT allowed to use the Internet.....when a staffer wrote a very good article, the byline was removed and the staffer did not get credit for the piece...... and there was assigned seating in the cafeteria. BULL S&^%@#$! I have at least a dozen very good friends who are “dark-skinned” and have worked at Johnson Publishing Company for decades and risen thru the ranks because they were qualified....every article I can remember reading in Ebony always carried a byline......and the employees I know also use the Internet on a regular basis!. Plus, I’ve been to lunch in the JPC cafeteria more times than I can count and I have never seen any indication of assigned seating. “Me thinks” Ms. Hughes is just a “hater”( and if you could have seen her hair weave which looked like a combination of straw and hay you could understand why!)....and don’t get me started on Monique Carradine Kitchens. Girlfriend, who died and appointed you the next Oprah Winfrey/Carole Simpson/Janet Langhart? I don’t even know why you would waste good air time having this woman on your show to promote this BULLSHYT book, although I don’t think any amount of interviews or talk show appearances are going to help the book’s sales since it was listed at ....drum roll please.....#100,562 on the Amazon Best Seller List at time I’m writing this. Yes, that’s right, there are more than ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND books which are outselling this one on a daily basis! Girl, go somewhere, sit down and stop being a HATER! Especially since you stated you are so very happy these days running that “magapaper,” you now work for. Also, stop by Dudley’s Beauty School and let one of their students do something to your head, cause you look a HOT MESS! BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY
vorced. Diana-Maria Riva plays Miguel’s wife, Sonia, and Lupe Ontiveros plays his mother. After a first frosty dinner meeting between the families, it’s decided that the couple will marry, but only if both families have influence on the ceremony. So it gets to be the couple’s marriage, but the families’ wedding. This decision doesn’t come lightly, as most of family members don’t agree with the interracial marriage but know that there little they can do about it. The next couple of weeks unfold with Brad and Miguel trying to get along, well that’s as long as Miguel arranges to return Brad’s sports car. Both men have gigantic personalities but try to get along for the sake of Marcus and Lucia. The two families not only learn more about the couple, but they individually learn more about themselves, also. A problem exists between Lucia and Marcus, because he doesn’t think she stands up for him as she should; since he’s finished medical school and is going to Laos to work with Doctors Without Borders. Lucia has her father believing that she’s still in law school, but she quit and is a volunteer teaching immigrants. One scene between the two dads and the couple is enough to cause a rift, with the couple calling off the wedding for a while. Sonia, the mother, figures out finally that the day isn’t about her, as she pleads with Miguel to see her as sexy as she was when they first married, just as he sees the vintage cars that he now restore. Angela is the peacemaker, but in the end all she wants is for Brad to see that they, in fact, have stronger feelings for one another than just friendship. Just how much salsa or soul should be at the wedding is anyone’s guess, but the cast members finally figure it out to make Our Family Wedding a nice family movie. The Chicago Crusader
ENTERTAINMENT “Big Girls Do Cry” By Carl Weber c.2010, Kensington Dafina $24.00 / $29.45 Canada 330 pages You should never have eaten that last slice of cake. Once you got the shirt home, the color looked awful on you. Yes, those pants make you look fat. Oh, if only you had chosen the cruise instead of the dude ranch! Dating that geeky guy from the office seemed like a good idea at the time. You wish you had listened to your instincts. Throughout your life, you’ve had a thousand regrets. But, as you’ll see in the new novel “Big Girls Do Cry” by Carl Weber, things could be worse. You’ve never asked your sister to carry your baby. Ever since Egypt married Rashad, all she wanted was to be a mommy. They had talked about a family for months and they tried and tried, but it wasn’t until
the miscarriage that Egypt found out she couldn’t carry a baby. Rashad made sure she had everything – a magnificent Virginia mansion, clothes, romantic trips – and Egypt couldn’t give him the one thing he asked her for. But the solution to her problem was down the hall from their bedroom. Isis, Egypt’s sister, had moved to Richmond to get away from the married man she was in love with, back in Queens. Tony wouldn’t leave his wife, so when Egypt asked Isis to be a surrogate for her and Rashad, Isis knew it was the answer to her dreams. Years before, Rashad had been Isis’ man but then Tony came into the picture. Isis gave Rashad up to be with Tony, and Rashad let Egypt heal his broken heart. As Isis saw it, she would get Rashad back if she gave him a son, or she would end up with Tony because of his jealousy. It was a win-win situation for her, no matter how you cut it. On the other side of town, Lorraine, Egypt’s boss, was heartsick.
Chicago Playwright Brings Hip-Hop To Life... Broadway Style Hip-Hop is taking the theater world by storm and Chicago is leading the revolution. Theori Stages Inc. has introduced Chicago to a whole new world of Theater and the world is taking notice. Regarded by the Chicago Redeye as “M.C. Masterpiece Theater,” “I Still Love H.E.R. Wendell Tucker rected by Chicagoan and former CHA Resident Wendell J. Tucker, “I Still Love H.E.R.” has taken the grittiness of Hip-Hop and combined it with the grace and spectacle of Broadway-style Theater to create a unique experience that has audiences raving. Since its opening night in January 2009, the underground sensation, “I Still Love H.E.R.” has exploded into a mainstream powerhouse, generating stellar reviews and sold-out performances. nus, Wendell Tucker, and choreographed by Columbia College Dance Major Jeremy Noah (cousin of the Chicago Bulls’ Joakim Noah), this sociological musical takes the audience on an insightful tour down memory lane, while taking time to examine conditions and events that gave birth to the cultural phenomena known as Hip-Hop. “I Still Love H.E.R.” centers on the venerable Love 1, a revered Chicago on-air personality, who’s angst about the current state of Hip-Hop has caused him to retire and dedicate his final broadcast to Hip-Hop as a memorial. In the midst of his farewell show, HipHop, personified, arrives to tell her story “the way it really is.” Through the dialogue that follows, Love 1 and his listeners are told the story of Hip-Hop through her own words. Social issues such as feminism, parenting, racism, capitalist media domination and violence in the Hip-Hop community are examined throughout the show, with relevant HipHop classics as the backdrop. By the end of his broadcast, Love 1 reconciles his love affair with his culture and realizes that he must “always take time to listen to the soundtrack of his life.” “‘I Still Love H.E.R.’ is an important step towards the healing of an ailing generation,” said Tucker, who also directed the show. “Although this modern tale of cultural pride is definitely (Continued on page 15)
As if it wasn’t bad enough that her husband, Leon, was lousy in bed, he was lousy in bed with another woman. Leon denied stepping out on her, but there was no other explanation for the plus-size panties Lorraine discovered all over the house. Thank goodness for Jerome. Long ago – before he came out of the closet and admitted he was gay – he and Lorraine had been lovers. Now they were best friends and Lorraine knew she could rely on him. Jerome knew exactly what to do with a cheating snake like Leon… Sexy, snarky, and sinfully delicious, “Big Girls Do Cry” is one of those novels that makes you scream out loud because the story’s so good and the plotline, so twisty. Author Carl Weber gives his characters traits you’ll love to hate, and it’s easy to get caught up in their scheming, steaming lives. Once I started this book, I was in trouble: it was hard to do anything else but read. Perfect for vacation – whether away or in your mind – “Big Girls Do Cry” is trashy, flashy fun. Pick it up and save it for the beach. Reading it will be something you won’t regret.

Serkin. Tickets: $18-$199 ******** Beyond the Score: “Rite of Passage?” — The CSO’s critically acclaimed discovery series Beyond the Score continues with Rachmaninov’s symphonic poem The Isle of the Dead. This program on March 26 and 28, featuring the absorbing narration of Creative Director Gerard McBurney, explores the fascinating story of how the composer was inspired by Swiss symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin’s paintings of an imaginary island. Although Böcklin left his paintings open to interpretation, Rachmaninov chose to invoke the ancient Greek stories of Charon, ferrier of souls of the dead across the river Styx; the composer dramatically captures the movement of the boat and the rhythm of the water and derives much of his music from the Roman Catholic “Dies irae,” a sequence about the Last Judgment. Vladimir Jurowski conducts the Orchestra in excerpts during the investigative first half of the program, followed by a complete performance of the work after intermission. Tea Party, Coffee Party: . . . (Cont’d from page 6) posse doesn’t matter, the point is that there is a necessity to mobilize to achieve the ends people are talking about. A Black party could enable the discussion about accountability to focus on the cabinet agencies where the Federal budget exist to achieve some of the things needed by the black community. Some of the specific programs being rolled out around jobs and a new focus on home foreclosure and etc. look good, but others such as “race to the top” as an educational program looks questionable to me – and the issue is that few of these programs across the board have been developed with the vigorous input and engagement of those for whom
the programs are supposed to be designed. A Black party could also monitor and engage local initiatives more effectively. Where the rubber meets the road is in the local communities and there, mayors, county officials, state legislators and others presumably have some idea of what it takes to make black communities whole, what resources are addressed to that task and what is lacking. A mobilized force could assist in this task of projecting community needs and monitoring whether or to what extent they are met. What I am suggesting has been happening to some extent with the vigilance of our Civil Rights organizations, the Institute of the Black World 21st Century and the
action of progressive black officials at the national, state and local levels. However, there should be a greater role for citizen engagement and a Black party mechanism could be the key. What we are witnessing is the rush of media attention to these movements, a dynamic that gives them power and places our interests farther and farther into the background. Mobilizing would give us the power to regain the footing to address the truth of our condition. Young leads three Public League teams downstate By J. Coyden Palmer If there were any questions about where to find the best high school basketball programs in the state before Tuesday’s Supersectionals, they have now been answered. The Chicago Public League will be sending three teams to Peoria this weekend after Whitney Young, Marshall and Simeon each dominated their opponents to become winners in the competition. It’s the largest number of teams CPS has ever sent downstate at once since the decision to give up the automatic bid in 2003. Many were skeptical about that decision because it meant CPS might not have any teams to qualify, but each year at least one team has earned a place in the state championship bid. “I think the results speak for themselves,” said CPS Sports Coordinator Calvin Davis. “Basketball is the king sport in Chicago and our kids take the game to heart.” CPS had an opportunity for four teams to qualify this year but Robeson dropped a 70-60 decision to Hillcrest in the Class 3A Supersectional at UIC. The Raiders (22-6) got off to a slow start and was never able to manage a lead in the game. LaShane Purdy led them with 18 points, but Hillcrest’s Eric Gaines had 26 points and seven rebounds to send the Hawks downstate. Two weeks ago the Hillcrest girls’ team finished second in the state, now the boys will have a chance to make their mark. Gaines, who will play at Kent State in the fall, said it took him a little time to adjust to the depth perception at the Pavilion, even shooting two air balls from the free throw line early in the game. “It was pretty embarrassing, but after my eyes adjusted to the rim I was cool,” Gaines said while laughing after the game. “We want to go
downstate and do just as good if not better than the girls did. Their success is putting pressure on us to do well.” Young had little trouble handing a loss to Maine South in the second game of the night in Class 4A play. The Dolphins (21-6) were tied with the Hawks at 15 at the end of the first quarter and only led by four at the half. But after the entire team changed shoes and got a stern lecture at halftime, the Dolphins outscored Maine South 14-0 in the third quarter and cruised to a 6339 victory. Guards Anthony Johnson and Ahmad Starks scored 19 and 22 respectively to lead Young. The win means Young will have a chance to defend their state title, something Johnson and his teammates wanted to do all year. “After we lost in the city playoffs, we got refocused,” Johnson said. “I think we were taking games for granted. With me being a senior, along with Ahmad and J.R. Reynolds, we got the team on the same level as us so we can make another state run.” Starks was a catalyst for Young, who will play against Waukegan at 8:15 p.m. this Friday in a rematch of last year’s state title game. He set the tone of the game in the first half drilling three shots from behind the arc in the first half. He said usually he tries to distribute the ball early to get everyone involved, but on this night he felt a need to set the pace to take some of the pressure to score off of some of his teammates. “Being a senior, I have to do certain things to get my team going,” he said. “At first it was me doing my thing but this weekend I will do whatever it takes to win to get that done.” The Dolphins started the game in new, three-quarter, orange and black shoes. Despite a warning
MEMBERS OF THE Whitney Young basketball team are headed to Peoria for this weekend’s State basketball championships after the Dolphins destroyed Maine South at the UIC Supersectional on Tuesday. (Photo by J. Coyden Palmer) from their assistant coach that someone could sprain an ankle, the players decided to wear the shoes anyway. That was until freshman Thomas Hamilton hurt his ankle in the first half then an “executive decision” was made by Coach Tyrone Slaughter at the half. “Our assistant coach Ronald Coleman and Coach Slaughter told us to take the shoes off and go back to our other shoes that we’ve been wearing all year,” Johnson explained. “And that was the end of that experiment.” Simeon also advanced in Class 4A play after pulling out a thrilling 5850 win in double overtime over Benet at the Hinsdale Central Supersectional. Simeon senior Brandon Spearman hit a three-point shot at the buzzer in regulation to send the game into the first OT. Then he sent the game into a second overtime by hitting a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds re-
maining. Spearman led Simeon (23-9) with 24 points and nine rebounds. After the game he described the big three-pointer at the end of regulation. “I was just trying to get a good look at the basket and I was able to beat my defender. I was a little off balance on the shot, but when the time is ticking you just have to use your instincts,” he said. “I blinked after I shot and never saw the ball go through the basket.” The win for the Wolverines means they will be headed downstate for the first time since 2007, when led by current Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose. That team won the second of two state titles. This year a lot of in-house squabbles with players and parents hurt the Wolverines, according to their Coach Robert Smith. But he said his team has finally begun to gel. Smith took the unconventional route of airing out many of his
gripes with parents and his team’s lack of leadership in the media. Last month he said his team was “not that good.” Now they are one of only four teams left playing for a state title. Marshall used their speed and quickness to whizz by St. Viator in a 63-51 victory to earn a trip to Peoria. They will be the only Public League team in the Class 3A competition but the Commandos (267) have been a staple in recent years, winning the title in 2008. Led by Keifer Sykes’ 17 points, Marshall will be looking to bring home the state title for their student body and more importantly staff. Last month, CPS officials announced that Marshall will be one of two turnaround schools that will have their entire staff and faculty replaced at the end of this year. The players feel they owe it to outgoing Coach Henry Cotton and his staff to leave with a championship.
