The Community’s help needed to capture man who murdered teen By J. Coyden Palmer After nearly four years and with the help of several people who have stepped forward with information, Chicago Police have identified a suspect in the heinous murder of a 17-year-old teen outside a Ford City Shopping Mall movie theatre that occurred in April of 2006. With the assistance of Father Michael Pfleger, police and family members held a news conference March 3rd asking for the public’s assistance in capturing Eddie B. Fenton, who allegedly shot the teen victim in the head for no reason. Willie Williams III was attending the opening night showing of the movie “ATL” with his childhood friends. Police say a fight that did not involve Williams broke out at some point earlier in the evening. Outside in the parking lot, Fenton allegedly approached Williams and shot him without warning.

Williams died 14 hours later of his wounds. Pfleger said it is time to bring Fenton to justice, but more importantly time for the African American community to do away with the “no snitching” mentality that has allowed crime to flourish in Black neighborhoods across the city. He praised the police, family members and witnesses who have continued to work on the case and said it is now time for the city as a whole to do the right thing and help capture Fenton. “Today we stand here because we are at a very pivotal point perhaps in solving this murder,” Pfleger said. “Willie’s parents, the Chicago Police Department and other parents have done their work in getting us a suspect. Now we need the community to do their work. Our first desire is to have Mr. Fenton turn himself in. I pray today that he will have the conscious and conviction to ei-

WASHINGTON (NNPA) - A Congressional hearing has finally addressed Black newspaper publishers’ and other ethnic media’s campaign against inadequate advertising budgets set forth by the Census Bureau that some say undermines the nation’s upcoming headcount of African-Americans. The Information Policy, Census and National Archives Subcommittee held a hearing on Capitol Hill that examined the 2010 Census’ integrated media campaign in what they deem ‘hard-to-count’ areas and assessed ethnic media’s role in preventing an undercount of minorities. “I must tell you, there must be a lack of importance delivering the 2010 Census to all Black households throughout America, as evidenced by the Census’ initial offer to buy advertisement in only a small portion of Black newspapers with a budget of $1.3 million dollars to count 40 million people,” said Danny Bakewell, chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a federation of more than 200 Black-owned newspapers. “With a budget of $1.3 million, you don’t intend to count

There is no reason to

cherry pick.” He held that only “trusted” media such

as Black-owned broadcasters and newspapers would be able to effectively deliver the Census’ message to Black communities. “If you want to communicate with Black people than you’re going to have to communicate through us,” Bakewell said. Subcommittee chairman Representative Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) chaired the three-panel hearing. He was flanked by congressional subcommittee members Representative Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Representative Jason Chaffetz (R- Utah), as well as Maxine Waters (D- Calif.) and Sheila JacksonLee (D-Texas), who are not officially listed as subcommittee members but attended because of their interest. The hearing was a major accomplishment for minority media, but especially for NNPA’s Bakewell, who pushed for the members to hold the hearing as he en(Continued on page 2)

Youth demand action on gun violence Want tougher gun control laws By La Risa Lynch A day before the U.S. Supreme court prepares to hear arguments on the constitutionality of the city’s handgun ban, a national teen gun survey shows that half of all Black youths know someone impacted by gun violence. “We teens are fed up with gun violence and are tired of seeing our peers’ futures cut short,” said Eddie Bland, 18, a member of Uhlich Children’s Advantage Network, (UCAN) which commissioned the annual Teen Gun Survey, now in its tenth year. Youth leaders from UCAN presented the survey’s results during a press conference last Monday at the organization’s administrative offices, 3737 N. Mozart. UCAN is a north side social service agency serving at-risk youths. The survey, conducted over a two-month period in the spring of 2009, revealed that one in four teens knows someone who has been shot and one in three teens fears being shot. The survey also revealed one in three teens could easily access guns if they wanted to while 12 percent

“Too often young people are turning to gun violence to protect themselves,” Long said. Gun violence is not just an urban problem, contends Chase Larkin, of south suburban Dolton, nor is it an issue of class. Larkin noted that his college-bound friend, whose father was a sheriff of Country Club Hills, was gunned down. “How could someone like him be shot and killed? Are any of us safe?,” asked the 20-year-old South Suburban College student. Pleas for tougher gun control have not gone unheeded by local

With 500 Chicago Public School students, being victims of gun violence last year, Quigley urged his “colleagues to weigh the extraordinary influence of the extremists on the gun issue versus the fear that our students live with everyday.” Quigley filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court urging Chicago’s handgun ban to

“We know that we are not manufacturing guns here in the city of Chicago, so they have to come from somewhere. Where they are coming from is illegal sellers,” Trotter said. The General Assembly is working on a bill requiring that anyone who sells handguns must be licensed by the lllinois State Police. Also, anyone found guilty of defacing a gun’s serial numbers could face three to seven years in prison. “Some of us are listening to what you are saying,” Trotter said. When asked about what could be done to reduce gun violence, the teens responded that more male mentoring programs are needed.

“We want to be helped,” said Bland, who is involved in UCAN’s Project Visible Man program, a male mentoring program. Monica Sanders, 18, a Best Practice High School student, added that programs should not overlook females who are both victims and perpetrators of gun violence. Sanders lost a 17-year-old female friend to gun violence when a15year-old female student shot her to death. “Our efforts to stop violence must include everyone,” Sanders said. Quigley however noted that Congress has abdicated its duties on gun legislation. He said Congress has refused to renew the assault weapons ban. Sophomore Sports on chopping block NEWS

By J. Coyden Palmer

Due to budget constraints, the head of the Chicago Public Schools Department of Sports Administration sent a memo to high school athletic directors telling them there is a strong possibility all spring sophomore sports will be cancelled this year. The move comes as CPS tries to fill a budget shortfall of nearly $1 billion. Parents, students and coaches say the move will have a detrimental affect on the city’s students, who already compete against suburban teams without proper facilities, equipment and other shortfalls. “Though spring sports teams can officially begin practice today, the varsity and freshman levels are the only levels of girls and boys coaches approved to begin practice at this time,” stated a memo written by Davis on March 2nd. “The CPS system continues to carefully examine all programs before specific budgetary decisions are finalized.” And while the statement is vague, many believe the cuts will take place for sure by the end of the month. For the last six weeks sophomore coaches have been on edge as they heard rumors there would be programs, but the coaches would not be paid. Davis’

memo has done little to ease their fears or those of administrators. Frank Griseto is the athletic director at Jones College Prep. Like others he was saddened with the news and said it will put his girl’s softball team in a precarious position. “We have about 15 sophomore girls excited about the upcoming season and then came this news,” said Griseto, who also serves as the boy’s varsity basketball coach. “Our softball program has made great strides in the past few years and the key to doing that is having excellent lower level programs before the kids move up to varsity. If we have to cancel the sophomore team, it will hurt the development of the athletes.” In addition to softball, other spring sports include track and field, baseball, girl’s soccer and boy’s tennis. Others who would be affected if spring sports are cancelled would be officials and umpires. The cancellation of an entire season would dramatically reduce the number of officials needed for spring sports. Cynthia Irvin is the coordinator for girl’s softball. She said some umpires have already been assigned to games but she does not anticipate many problems with assigning others. She and others see the biggest challenge as what to do with sopho-

more players who do not quite have the skills to play at the varsity level and will not be eligible to play on freshman teams. She is pondering only having varsity softball teams. Davis said there is a possibility that freshman and sophomore teams could merge together to form a junior varsity team. CPS officials say there are 55 sophomore baseball teams. Baseball experts say CPS officials must be careful with moving players up to the varsity level too soon because there is a risk of injury. That same concern is why sophomores would not be able to play on freshman teams. Parents and community activists are concerned that cutting sports programs could lead to more violence in the streets as teens would have less positive outlets to release pent-up energy. Harold Pollack, a professor at the University of Chicago’s Social Service Administration said little has been shown effective in reducing youth violence, but one thing that has is a sports component. That’s why the U of C launched a program in 15 Chicago schools called Becoming a Man (BAM)—Sports Edition in November of 2009. The program’s sport component involves youth participating in olympic sports like archery, boxing, judo, team hand-

ball, wrestling and weight lifting. Pollack said providing a constructive, positive, physical model is important to reducing stress in youth and teaching them how to work together to solve problems. CPS spokesperson Monique Bond said everything is up in the air right now as this is unchartered territory. She said some changes will have to be made but the final

decision on what those changes will be has not been finalized. “We just don’t know yet,” she said. “The message that we have to get out is that there’s going to be some shared responsibility here. This isn’t something we want to do; it’s something we have to do. We simply don’t have the funding unless we see a dramatic influx of cash.”

But if he does not do that, we know that people know where he is. We need the community to break the silence and tell us where he is so we can apprehend him. We want to bring peace to this family.” As an extra incentive, Pfleger said

Willie Williams III a $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Fenton by St. Sabina Church. Fenton, 26, has a tattoo of the Grim Reaper holding a smoking revolver on his right forearm, and the words “Bar” and “None” tattooed on the back of his hands. He is 6’3” and weighs 190 lbs. with a medium brown complexion. He is a convicted felon and a known member of the Black The Chicago Crusader

P Stone street gang. Police say as long as Fenton is on the streets the public is in danger because he is prone to kill again. They warn that anyone helping and/or hanging around Fenton are also putting themselves at risk because he has a violent temper. In addition, anyone helping him escape justice could also face charges. “Frankly I’m just sick and tired of this code of silence,” Pfleger said. “We hear and understand about fear of retaliation because it is real, but guess what, there is fear everyday. We need to just man up and overcome that fear.” Police Superintendent Jody Weis praised the community for their assistance thus far and said they just need to make one more step to see this case come to an end. He said this case, while tragic, is an example of how the community can help itself become stronger. “This has been a great case of collaboration,” Weis said. “The evidence grew cold so we turned it over to our Cold Case Squad and they began pursuing witnesses and people came forward. Thanks to some great detective work and the cooperation of the community, we are standing here today looking for the person who took a young man from us far too early.” Detective Saul Del Rivero said he and his

partner have been working on this case for the past 18 months. He said within the past few weeks, they got a lot of good leads and information and believe Fenton is possibly still in the Chicago area. When asked what the motive behind the slaying of Williams was, he said that is the most disturbing aspect of the case.

Eddie B. Fenton “There is no motive that we know of. It was truly a senseless act, which is what makes this suspect, Eddie Fenton, so dangerous,” Del Rivero said. The victim’s parents held a photo of their son at the news conference. His mother, Indira Rutues, fought through her tears to tell the media what a nightmare the last four years have been for her. She explained that losing her son is the

hardest thing she’s ever had to endure. There are still times when she is walking through the grocery store and will instinctively reach for one of her son’s favorite snacks then realize he is gone. “My son was a good son. Only the Lord knows why this could have happened to him. Please give us closure,” she said. Willie’s father echoed his mother’s sentiment. The father and son were very close. In a time when Black men often have a strained, if any relationship with their fathers, the Williams men were inseparable. “This is a dangerous individual and what he’s done to me and Indira’s son he can do to someone else,” Willie Williams Jr. said. “If you would have known Willie, you would have known a great kid. He made you laugh. He was an excellent athlete. I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights. I want the public to know that this is not very easy. You do not want to be in our shoes because this is so painful.” Fenton is from the area of 69th Street between Western and California in the Marquette Park community, police said. That is the place he usually hangs out, but they say he could be anywhere in the country right now. Fenton was last arrested in Chicago in Novem-

ber of 2009, but at that time he was not a suspect in the Williams murder case. Police say Fenton is the only suspect although there were other people involved in the fight. Willie Williams III was only 17 at the time of his murder. He was a senior at Robeson High School and was a member of the Jesse White Tumbling Team. An athlete all of his life, the younger Williams would often accompany his dad to athletic contests his father would work as an official. Pfleger said the Black community must make a choice when it comes to neighborhood safety. Right now he sees the problem not much different than what is taking place in Afghanistan, where criminals are hiding amongst the people and the community is too scared to give them up. But if Chicago neighborhoods truly want peace, then people have to take a stand and do what is right. “When the community makes it clear that you will not hide here after committing a crime, the shooting and the violence will stop.” Pfleger said. If you know the whereabouts of Eddie B. Fenton, please call 911 or the CPD Cold Case Unit at 312746-9690. 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL COMMON SENSE AND SCHOOL REFORM For many years now, people in America have been giving lip service about desiring better quality public schools. No Child Left Behind, a product of the Bush administration, was the latest in a national attempt to shore up the public schools and improve education. The jury is still out, but preliminary observations hint that it just did not work! In fact, because of the emphasis on standardized testing, a lot of students got “pushed out” of schools in order to keep them from pulling down the achievement average of troubled schools. Another alleged consequence was that schools were motivated to cheat, i.e., some would teach to the tests, or use tests that were not difficult in order to make it appear that the schools were doing better than they were doing. Now comes the next incarnation of a less than adequate approach - school turnarounds, wherein entire school staffs, principals and all, are fired. In light of the fact that there are a myriad of factors impacting troubled schools, this tactic is like throwing out the proverbial baby with the bathwater. Some good teachers and principals are bound to be caught in the mayhem. In addition to the turnarounds, there are pundits who call for a longer school day, in spite of the fact that the dropout rate, especially among minorities, is higher than three Mt. Everests! What is the logic behind extending the school day in order to retain students that don’t want to be there in the first place? This makes less sense than a copper penny. Astute observers could have seen the current public schools crisis coming a long time ago. The formula for America’s failing schools is simple - low paid teachers who became scapegoats; a dumbed down popular culture; inadequate school funding; inadequate financial resources in impoverished communities where people are motivated toward the “quick money fix” of drug dealing, and the consequent lack of interest in schools by youth who compare the often pedantic approach in many classrooms with the quick pace of video games and music videos. In other words, the problem is systemic and it is historical. Unless there are several very fundamental changes in the way that America values public education and funds public education, the new turnaround is just another runaround. It will not have the intended impact. Because of the inanity of some so-called school reform attempts juxtaposed to the notion of school vouchers, which always seem to be waiting in the wings, along with the “charter school” movement, one wonders whether or not there is a deliberate attempt to undermine public education. You just can’t blame all teachers for low achieving schools when they are mostly located in communities torn apart by poverty. It is ludicrous to think this is a viable conclusion. As long as Johnny and Johnetta can make more money slinging drugs on the corner than their teachers, it will be very difficult to keep them in schools, especially if the employment that awaits them at graduation is in minimum wage fast food establishments or department stores. One final note: school reform will not take place without a major push coming from parents. They are the keys to positive change, and unless they get involved, there will be no progress in this arena, period. We need some common sense in school reform, and we need it now! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We don’t need more taxes; we need more taxpayers with jobs! Dear Editor: On March 10, 2010, Governor Quinn will be making his annual budget address. Governor Quinn has made it clear that he believes the only way out of the state’s financial mess is to raise our taxes. Americans for Prosperity strongly disagrees! Americans for Prosperity believes Governor Quinn has failed to recognize that the taxpayers of Illinois will not accept tax increases as a solution to the state’s systemic spending and borrowing problems that have brought the state to near bankruptcy. Archaic tax increases and/or draconian cuts in the budget are short-term, band-aid approaches that will not fix our long-term fiscal perils. If Governor Quinn is to lead our state back into prosperity, his administration must have the courage to force the General Assembly to adopt public policies that reform how the state does business on several fundamental levels. Governor Quinn must work toward developing long-term, freemarket strategies that encourage small business growth; stop fund-

ing new base spending with onetime revenues; stop catering to the special interest groups who fear fundamental reforms that repair our broken budgetary, pension and Medicaid systems; and streamline state government by consolidating duplicative programs and policies. This is not rocket science! The tools, intellect, and mechanisms are available. The missing pieces seem to be leadership and political will. The numbers don’t lie. We’re one of the least business friendly states in the nation and we have a high rate of unemployment both of which are major contributors to lost revenues. We don’t need more taxes; we need more taxpayers with jobs!

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

The Trouble With Our Public Schools By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist

One of America’s biggest challenges is providing an adequate educate for our children. A solid education was a given when I was growing up and why isn’t it a simple thing now? It appears that we complicated a simple process to the point of making public edu-

cation more of a “cash cow” than a vehicle to ensure our freedom and economic standing in this competitive world. Our corporate leaders consider it a very serious crisis and rightly so. Let’s look at some of the obvious rea-

sons. The grades Kindergarten through Sixth Grade are the most important years. This is where the mold is set. You drill, drill and drill into the heads of our little angels the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic. In the early years, this was known as the “3 R’s”. If a child can master these three areas they will be ready to journey into other areas such as science, history, health, etc. The 3 R’s allow you to comprehend the more sophisticated subjects and gives you the rationale to reason and perform logic on other tasks. That’s all we need to do during K – 6 grades. Bad behavior will not be tolerated. These children must learn immediately to respect authority. Fighting for whatever reason is automatic suspension requiring a parental visit and a pledge to never do it again. Do it again; you will never return to that particular school. Talking back to a teacher is also a very bad thing and should be treated accordingly. Manners and respect for your elders should be paramount in order to maintain a learning environment. Dress codes must be in place. Why are we providing free

breakfasts at schools? This is a family matter and the government, if it wants to get involved, should deal directly with the family not a public school. Stop feeding these students free breakfast. School is for education only. Students should pay for their lunch or bag it. There should be no federal program dipping into the time for education. The same goes for daycare. Schools are for education not babysitting. There should be no daycare activities on the grounds of a public school. Let’s concentrate on education only! Perhaps the worst thing to happen to inner city schools was the “Busing” programs. This was an attack on our communities. Why would we wake up our children in the wee hours to put them on a bus and take them to a school where they weren’t wanted? It disrupted local community pride and alienated potentially great students. It gave them a feeling of inferiority. To answer my question, it was the bus manufacturers and unions, who wanted the driver jobs. They saw big bucks in this and therefore ordered the NAACP to push for it. This was perhaps the most damaging thing done to our commu-

nities from an educational standpoint. Central High, Crispus Attucks High, Booker T. Washington High, etc. soon disappeared and community pride and spirit went away. The procurement process of many school districts involves serious money. With that comes much corruption. The books, learning tools and equipment are many times decided via kick backs, etc. instead of what is best for the student. There should be major cleansing at all inner city school systems – they are all corrupt. Also, there should be intern and training programs demanded of corporations who do business with a particular school. They should recruit new applicants or train the very students they are making money from. This creates a visible future for the students and inspires them to study hard and perform well. Teenage pregnancy is a big distracter. If a student becomes pregnant she and the soon to be father must be removed from school and home schooled during the pregnancy. No student should be walking through the halls of a school pregnant. Many of the public schools actually have on campus daycare centers

for the children of the students. This is not school business and should not exist at all. Teen pregnancy should be discouraged not encouraged. When my family moved to Washington, DC we decided not to go the route of public schools. We were lucky to get our twins into one of the best private schools in the nation. Funny, the teachers there were not certified like public school teachers are required and most did not have degrees beyond the bachelor level, in addition they received about one half of the pay. However, they loved the kids; discipline was a must; the classrooms were small (12 students or less) and the students were always taught that the sky was the limit for each and every one of them. Bureaucracy, busing, corruption, federal intervention, lack of discipline, unions, low standards during K – 6 and poor social morals have destroyed our public school systems. Let’s rebuild them now. Tavis Goes into Battle of Wits with Sharpton Unarmed By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist If Tavis Smiley were doing the commentary on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, he might begin by saying, “As Big Mama would say, he created a new behind in his opponent.” But Tavis is not providing disinterested commentary on this feud, primarily because it was Rev. Al Sharpton who created a new butt in Tavis when the verbose talk show host tried to take on The Greater Debater. It was a Tavis commentary on February 23 that ignited the fireworks between Sharpton and Smiley. He accused Black leaders – Al Sharpton, Ben Jealous, Marc Morial, Dorothy Height, Professor Charles Ogletree and Valerie Jarrett – of singing the song that President Obama does not need to focus on a Black agenda. “I must have missed that choir rehearsal, J., because I don’t know the words to this new hymn,” Tavis proclaimed. “The president doesn’t need a Black agenda, they sing. He’s not the president of Black America, he’s the president of all America and he need not focus specifically on the unique challenges Black America is fac-

ing, they sing.” Sharpton said not only was Tavis off key, he cited the wrong lyrics. “First of all, we never said that,” an enraged Sharpton told Smiley. “And second of all, the New York Times never said we said that.” Sharpton said he placed a call to Tavis and did not get a return call. And when Tavis unexpectedly called Sharpton’s syndicated radio show, the civil rights leader issued a scorching point-by-point rebuttal. Tavis kept saying how much he loved Sharpton and no matter what Sharpton does, he can’t diminish Tavis’ love for him. Sharpton basically said, “What’s love got to do with it?” and proceeded to dismantle Tavis’ feeble defense. Tavis Smiley essentially showed up for a battle of wits unarmed. For the record, I’ve never been a Tavis fan. I think he is a poor interviewer who has more style than substance. No journalist worth his or her salt makes the question in an interview longer than the answer. But Tavis is not a journalist. Never has been one. And it shows. Until now, I’ve never mentioned Tavis’ name in print. But now that he has publicly questioned the integrity of civil rights leaders he formerly courted, it’s

time to place some additional things on the record. When I was editor of Emerge magazine, I got a call from Deborah Tang, his producer and one of my longtime friends. “Tavis wants to be on the cover of Emerge,” she said. I thought Deborah was joking and replied, “People in hell want ice water.” She continued, “George, I’m serious. Can we go to lunch to talk about it?” Realizing that she wasn’t joking, I asked, “Has Tavis ever read Emerge? If he had, he would already know that he’ll never be on the cover of Emerge.” Tang persisted until I told her that I could

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

afford my own lunch and there was no need to waste time discussing the prospect of Tavis being on the cover of Emerge. I chalked the exchange up to Tavis’ oversized ego and didn’t think about it again until more than five years later when two producers on Tavis’ radio show independently asked me if I knew I was on Tavis’ secret hit list. I replied that I didn’t know that Tavis kept such a list. Each producer told me in separate conversations that they had suggested using me to discuss stories on his radio show and were later taken aside by other staffers and informed that I would never be on his show because I had done something in the past to offend Tavis (I was actually on time once when Karen Bates was the guest host). When told that I had offended Tavis, I searched my memory but came up with a blank. Tavis and I were always cordial when we met in public. We were neither friends nor enemies. At least, I didn’t consider him an enemy. I was never a fan of his in any sense of the word. I was never invited to any of his dog-and-pony shows and never wanted to participate in them. One of the producers told me

that I was on Tavis’ enemies list because I didn’t put him on the cover of Emerge. All I could do at the time was laugh and shake my head. What an egomaniac, I thought. The nation got a glimpse of Tavis being a legend in his own mind during the presidential election. In 2008, he asked candidate Barack Obama to participate in one of his town hall selfpromotions in Louisiana, a state that he had already carried two weeks earlier. Hillary Clinton, seeking to win over more Black voters, accepted Tavis’ invitation. Obama, trailing Clinton in Texas, declined to attend but offered to send his wife, Michelle. Tavis rejected the offer as well as a second plea from Obama that Michelle participate. Consequently, many of Tavis’ previous followers on Tom Joyner turned against him, prompting him to quit the show. Tavis likes to pretend public opinion turned against him because he had the gall to stand up to Barack Obama. No, people were more disappointed that he was eager to lie down for Hillary Clinton. And he still lies down (Continued on page 6) 5

At this current stage of history in the Black Liberation Movement, it is important that key concepts be revisited and re-discussed in our continued efforts to seek clarity on certain ideas that are fundamental to the white supremacy foundation of America.

Dr. Conrad Worrill First, there is the idea and concept of the African Holocaust of Enslavement. When we discuss genocide against African People in America, we must also discuss the African Holocaust, because it was this Holocaust that has historically created the on-going genocidal conditions inflicted against African People in America. According to most dictionaries holocaust means any widespread destruction. As the African Holocaust researcher Michael Scott explains— “No African was waiting as a slave to be traded to the Europeans. In all regions of Africa, from which Africans were transported, the African was involved in a brutal war declared by the European aggressor, interested in ex6

Things turn around Young female drivers have been exhibiting more erratic behavior regarding their driving in recent times. Whereas driving without a care about one’s future or the future of someone else has historically been attributed to the male population, it is noted that the females of the population seem to have adopted negative actions while driving throughout the city and country. Speeding is one of the changes in their driving. They are lane shifting, changing from lane to lane in dangerous ways while on large highways and have been coming in contact with other drivers while in high-speed areas. Then we have the problem of cyclists who are peddling very close to traffic while lane changing with the bikes almost on the verge of getting involved with cars, trucks, buses and huge trucks. One of the things we have seen is that police officers haven’t curbed these cyclists. The north side of Chicago has the largest number of these flagrant cyclists. The possibility of any of these cyclists succumbing to death as a result of inappropriate actions while cycling is enormous. Southsiders have the ability to gather in the bike lanes and look for cars that are beside them. I have looked on both sides of town. I’ve seen cyclists pedal between large trucks and CTA buses without any care of their personal safety. I have had the job of investigating a young girl who struck a parked car, fell to the ground and had the right rear tires of a passing vehicle to run over her leg. Now the northside has more cyclists on the roadways. I have observed several of them swerve out into open traffic and nearly be

ploiting the human and natural resources of the richest continent on the earth.” Further, Brother Scott reveals, “These Africans who became prisoners of war were placed in detention camps and then transported to the Americas to be enslaved by the benefactors of their captors. No African began his or her ordeal as a slave. Africans were reduced to slavery by conquest.” It is important for African People to understand and internalize these brief historical facts. Just as the Jews, or any other group of people in the world, internalize their holocaust, and act on it, African People must come to the collective reality of our African Holocaust and act on it also. Finally, Brother Scott instructs us that, “Our foreparents were innocent victims of these heinous systems of forced labor. They were never able to comprehend being seized in early morning attacks on their villages by vicious raiding parties. They were never able to understand why they were being sold by the avaricious middle men. They could never fathom why they were being marched in fetters and chains to the coast where they were bartered for European merchandise, especially rum and guns. They could never appreciate why they were being warehoused in hell-like dungeons in Elmina or Goree.” So now that we have some insight into the idea and concept of the African Holocaust, it should make it easier to understand the idea and concept of genocide. In Olumenji’s book, White Genocide, Black Obsolescence, The Question of Black Survival In White America, he defines genocide very succinctly. He says genocide is the “deliberate and systematic destruction of Black people by white American socio-economic and cultural forces.” According to Brother Olumenji, America has created an ideology that justifies the annihilation of African people in this country. This is the function of genocide by those who inflict it on a mass of people. That is, they create a rationale for the annihilation and then try to explain that it does not exist.

This is the case in the current CIA involvement in cocaine distribution in Los Angeles in which the profits were used to finance the CIA backed Contra army in Nicaragua. This involvement of the CIA caused a proliferation of the distribution and sale of crack cocaine across the African Communities of America, causing serious devastation to our communities. The United States Government is trying to downplay the CIA’s involvement in this incident by saying that this is an isolated situation and in fact this is not true.

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

As a result of the African Holocaust and the genocide against African People in America, we must step up the demand for Reparations as the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N’COBRA) is advocating. Reparations simply means repair for injuries, harm and damages. As it has been pointed out, over and over again, we were made chattel and worked for more than threehundred years without pay or other compensation for the value of our labor. The white man and white woman stole and criminally appropriated the services and the value of three-hundred years of labor and then passed it on through inheritance to their children. This process helped create the United States of America and this is fundamental to our demands for Reparations. We must continue to discuss these ideas in our efforts to dismantle our mental shackles. Every race and every ethnic group in the world protect their interests and African People should and must do no less.

Maurice Clayton struck by vehicular traffic in an effort to acquire more distance and doing so without fear of being hurt or injured. Mothers and fathers you must take care while loading your children into and out of vehicles if you are doing it on the street side. Now remember the correct side to perform this act is the curbside. What happens when cyclists are on the road when passengers exit on the street side can sometimes be not so nice. Individuals tossed into the air, bicycles flung off into oncoming traffic, bumps, bruises and the like. Caution must never be tossed to the wind. Traffic rules were established for a reason—to keep the public safe. Remember the driver is the responsible party and will be placed at fault in situations where vehicle collides with pedestrians/cyclists. One more thing, I’m seeing more and more drivers not using the seat belts and child restraint seats. All one needs to do is to see what happens if/when a child is ejected from a car that is involved in a front-end collision. Please, take care of the family and it will more than likely take care of you in your older years. God bless all of you.

ENTERTAINMENT ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

COP OUT Tracy Morgan darn near has his leading role, along with Bruce Willis, in the newly released Cop Out. The pair is teamed up in a buddy-cop movie that likens itself to Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, and others that pit good and bad cops against the bad guys. In one hysterical scene, Morgan, who plays Paul, interrogates a suspect, but he tries to wear the criminal down by reciting lines from legendary old cop movies, i.e., “King Kong ain’t got nothing on me” from Hurricane, “They call me Mr. Tibbs” from In the Heat of the Night, and “What we have here is a failure to communicate” from Cool Hand Luke. Tracy is at the top of his game in this movie. At some point in the movie, Willis, who plays Jimmy, has to pay for his daughter’s wedding. In a pinch, he decides to sell a vintage baseball card, but in the process the pawn shop is robbed, and the two botch what had been a longtime stakeout of the store

by other police officers. Afterward, they are suspended for a month without pay, but Jimmy needs that card back and decides to visit the thug who robbed the shop. After cutting a deal with the thug to get the card back, Paul and Jimmy have to hunt down a stolen Mercedes. Therein lies the problem and the beginning of one wild ride after another, with the two cops risking life and limb. In between the crime fighting, Paul has a problem keeping his attention on his work, as he believes his wife is cheating on him. He plants a camera in a stuffed animal in the couple’s bedroom, only to be temporarily heartbroken, when the camera reveals just what’s been going on while Paul has been working.

Throughout your life, friendships come and go like seasons. Sometimes, you’ll barely notice. But in the new book “Wench” by Dolen Perkins-Valdez, four women forge a summer friendship that they need to last lifetimes. Set a ways back and surrounded by woods, Tawawa House was grand. Three stories high and sixty-four miles from Cincinnati, it sparkled white and featured twelve small cabins surrounding a quiet lake. Though Northerners weren’t happy about it, it was the perfect place for a Southern gentleman to bring his mistress, particularly if she was also his slave. It felt to Lizzie like the trip from Tennessee to Ohio took forever, maybe because she was always chained, which Drayle said was necessary. She believed him and why not? He was her man, father of her children, and though he owned her, she loved him. Yes, her situation was crystal clear – Drayle’s wife never let her forget it – but Lizzie wasn’t going anywhere. At Tawawa House, Lizzie knew she would re-kindle friendships with Reenie and Sweet. Northfield Community Church to rededicate pipe organ in memory of George M. Williams Beloved musician served as church’s music director and organist for nearly 42 years

Northfield Community Church (UCC), 400 Wagner Road in Northfield, will rededicate its 1973 Schlicker tracker organ on Sunday, March 14 in memory of George M. Williams, longtime Music Director/Organist of the church, who died last year. The organ was built to Mr. Williams’ specifications shortly after he became Music Director. Mr. Williams was also a longtime friend, arts advocate, and active member of the Music Institute of Chicago’s (MIC) Board of Trustees,

George M. Williams

who touched so many lives through his musical gifts. In 2007, the MIC established the George M. Williams Endowed Scholarship Fund in his honor. Endowed by members of the Northfield Community Church and friends of Mr.Williams to honor his forty years of music-making in the community, the Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to present or prospective students of classical organ at the MIC who show both talent and a proven need for funds to meet their music studies. George M. Williams received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Roosevelt University’s Chica-

go College of Performing Arts, where he won the coveted Oliver Ditson Award in Organ and was inducted into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Honorary Music Fraternity. He was a member of the North Shore Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and past dean of the chapter; the Chicago Music Association, Br. No. 1, NANM, Inc.; a former member of the Faculty at Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University and Harold Washington College, City Colleges of Chicago; and classical music critic with his wife Barbara Wright-Pryor for The Chicago Crusader. Katie Minion, age 17, an organ

student of James Russell Brown at MIC and the first recipient of the George M. Williams Scholarship, will perform a mini recital performing J. S. Bach’s Toccata in F Major, BWV 540 and Marcel Dupré’s Prelude and Fugue in G minor, Op. 7, No. 3 during the 10:30 AM worship service. The public is invited to attend. A reception will follow the service. For more information, call the church office at 847-446-3070.

The Chicago Sinfonietta receives new funding to support its “Project Inclusion” Initiative The Chicago Community Trust commits $75,000 to support artists of color mentoring program The Chicago Sinfonietta, the nation’s most diverse symphony orchestra, announced two recent institutional developments. The Orchestra has received a $75,000 grant from The Chicago Community Trust to enhance “Project Inclusion,” a mentoring program for artists of color that focuses on cultivating the next generation of musical talent by providing young musicians with professional development opportunities, coaching with senior members of the Sinfonietta, and job placement assistance. We’re very proud of our “Project Inclusion” programs and we

are grateful for this opportunity to augment our efforts,” said Chicago Sinfonietta Executive Director Jim Hirsch. “The Chicago Community Trust grant will ensure that we continue to not only reach out to young musicians but also to foster the growing diversity among the music community.” The grant from The Chicago Community Trust will support the “Project Inclusion Orchestra Fellows” and the “Project Inclusion Ensemble Fellows,” the two different musician categories that make up the program as a whole. The “Project Inclusion Orchestra Fellows” provides young musicians with an apprenticeship position where they rehearse and perform with the Sinfonietta and receive one-on-one mentoring

Paul Freeman with a senior member of the or- small ensembles to perform free chestra. The “Project Inclusion monthly performances in ChicaEnsemble Fellows” allows for go schools, park districts and other community venues, providing young musicians with valuable performance experience and coaching from Sinfonietta Personnel Manager and Principal Violist Renée Baker. “Project Inclusion” is also supported by Lead Sponsor, Aon Cornerstone Innovative Solutions; Hewitt Associates, the original sponsor of “Project Inclusion;” and the Elizabeth Morse Genius Charitable Trust. The Chicago Sinfonietta, now

in its 23rd season, has a proud history of having enriched the cultural, educational, and social quality of life in Chicago, while gaining significant recognition on the national and international stage. Performing at Chicago’s Symphony Center and Lund Auditorium of Dominican University, the Sinfonietta presents a full season of symphonic concerts as well as a Chamber Series. The Chicago Sinfonietta is the official orchestra of the Joffrey Ballet. Under the guidance of founding Music Director Paul Freeman, the orchestra performs at the highest artistic level and has achieved an outstanding reputation for its innovative programs. Chicago Sinfonietta musicians truly represent the city’s rich cultural landscape and continue to fulfill the orchestra’s mission of Musical Excellence through Diversity™. A 2007 survey of major orchestras revealed that the Chicago Sinfonietta is the most diverse professional orchestra in the United States. Through this distinction the Chicago Sinfonietta serves as a national model for inclusiveness in classical music.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

Music is in the air With spring just around the corner the gospel music industry is set to release some truly dynamic sounds into the air. First to come out will be Marvin Sapp this month when he meets fans on March 16th at the Harold Wash-

tainment Group. Born into poverty in 1911, Mahalia Jackson’s throaty, fervent, rich and distinctive New Orleanstinged contralto took her from Louisiana’s Plymouth Rock Baptist Church choir (performing from

and, at his request, prior to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s epochal “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 civil rights March on Washington, D.C. Rocking crowds from the Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall and across Europe, she became a force in radio and TV, then mostly off-limits to African-Americans. Flooding her bluesy songs with soul and spirit, Mahalia always honored a pledge to never perform secular music. She recorded 35 albums and a dozen of her 45 rpm records sold over 1 million copies, going gold (platinum by today’s standards). Presented a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972, Jackson’s powerful, force-ofnature voice was a clear influence on R&B and rock – including such icons as Little Richard – and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Hailing from the legendary group Commissioned to the hit single Never Could Have Made It to The Best In Me Marvin Sapp hits the ground running again when his new release Here I Am floods stores on March 16th.

Marvin Sapp Gracing the Chicago gospel scene the same day at the Harold Washington Cultural Center fans will be able to enjoy a mini-performance, purchase CDs and have them autographed by the artist. The highly anticipated project embodies the heart and soul of Marvin Sapp with songs that will refresh and fortify the spirit. The first single, “The Best In Me” is currently #1 at Gospel radio and, according to Billboard, has already matched the 2008 peak of his seminal “Never Would Have Made It.” “The Best In Me” also recently achieved the largest position jump

(#78 - #14 Hot R&B/Hot Songs Chart) in 18 years by a gospel track, as well as the largest jump in four years among all genres. HERE I AM, the follow-up to Sapp’s 2007 breakout project Thirsty, was recorded live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is a shining example of the gift of music that resides in Marvin Sapp. The CD was produced by Aaron Lindsey with vocal direction by Myron Butler and Sapp’s robust tenor as the main attraction. The 12-track disc features such standouts as “Here I Am;” “He Has His Hands On You,” and “Fresh Wind.” Sapp says “the title track speaks to me as an individual and the things I've endured over the last three years. I'm still standing, even under the waves of pressure and difficulties - from sickness in my wife's life to the more general challenges of my own life.” “He Has His Hands On You” is a beautifully comforting song offering a reminder that whatever challenges people may face, it is all part of God's master plan. “Many times people feel like giving up because

The Muti Era begins at CSO (Continued from page 14) concerts led by Maestro Muti will pair Berlioz’s “Symphonie fantastique” with its companion piece “Lélio” featuring Gérard Depardieu as narrator. Muti’s inaugural residency will celebrate “México 2010,” with performances of Carlos Chávez’s “Sinfonía india,” the world premiere of Bernard Rands’ “Danza Petrificada,” and an open rehearsal with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in the Pilsen neighborhood led by Muti. CSO’s Symphony Ball October 2 (formerly the Opening Night Gala) will feature the return to Symphony Center after a 20-year absence of Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Muti and the CSO. Muti will lead concert performances of Verdi’s “Otello” in Chicago and on tour in Carnegie Hall. The CSO will perform four commissioned works by former Mead Co-Composers-in-Residence Osvaldo Golijov and Mark-Anthony Turnage (20062010); Bernard Rands, and EsaPekka Salonen. The CSO and Muti will perform subscription concerts of Luigi Cherubini’s rarely programmed “Requiem in C Minor” in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Anna Clyne’s «rewind« and Mason Bates’ “The B-Sides” will be performed by the CSO and led

ington Cultural Center. Then just after Easter a 2-disc collector’s set featuring the music of Mahalia Jackson will hit the street. With a voice that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “comes along once in a millennium,” the legend that is Mahalia Jackson is celebrated in A Gospel Calling: Mahalia Jackson Sings, gracing DVD April 13 from Infinity Enter-

age four) to an international reputation as gospel’s first lady and “the greatest voice of the century.” Decades after her 1972 death, Mahalia remains the world’s most influential gospel singer, who performed for royalty, heads of state and presidents. Infusing gospel with a sensuality and note-bending freedom never before seen, she sang at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration;

(Continued from page 12) work. But that summer of 1852, when Lizzie met Mawu, well, things sure did change. Lizzie had never met anybody like Mawu, with her halo of red hair and freckles. She was a sassy one, and Lizzie wanted to be friends with Mawu very much. Regal Reenie was suspicious and Sweet was too preoccupied by the baby in her belly to be concerned with a smart-talking wench like Mawu. But Mawu knew a few things. She reminded the women that Ohio was a free state, and that there was a vacation resort for Black folk just through the woods. It was only a walk away… I didn’t like “Wench” at first: the initial set-up of the plot and the introduction of the characters felt boggy and moved too fast for comfort. There were enough

hints of promise, though, so I stuck around. I was glad I did. Author Dolen Perkins-Valdez tells a heartbreakingly unsettling tale of secrets, lies, and power, and the friendships of women who nurture a bond because circumstances have forced it. Perkins-Valdez’s storytelling has great timing, which serves to keep her readers guessing right to the end of the last page. Despite its somberness, I highly recommend this book. If you read “Wench,” make yourself stick through the first few pages and you’ll be rewarded with a fine story you won’t forget. As it turns out, this is a novel with class.

DARKTOWN STRUTTERS BALL Ima been told that the mouthy Kappa midget, otherwise known as Mark “Me, Me, Me” Allen got quite the surprise last week when he showed up to

plot know that egotistical, Negro airheads are so hungry to be seen and saluted for having a job that they will actually pay for the privilege of being listed in that book and will also shell out big bucks to be publicly honored because of it. That’s like a prostitute paying herself to (censored ’cause it was a bunch of nasty talk). These honorees can then go home and look at themselves inside a yearbook and brag to all dey friends how popular and famous they be. Unfortunately the fame only last one year—and so they gotta do it all over again on the next. To each its own, is what we say. Well apparently, somebody got the bright idea to “honor” Mark Allen, except they forgot to tell this broke publisher and some times activist and all the time big mouth, that he had to pay to be listed in the book and he had to pay for his awards dinner. He also had to be paid to be “interviewed” by a fake reporter who is doing it for “archival” purposes. Folk tell Ima that when Allen showed up grinning and skinning, smelling like something like Crown Royale and Old Spice, that his name wasn’t on the list. The lady at the front table didn’t know who he was and didn’t care either and said so. All she wanted was that admittance ticket, which he did not have and could not afford. Not to be out done and never one to be embarrassed about anything, we hear Allen went on a tirade about not being let in—-whereby an organizer of the Who’s Who event confronted him and

said the only way he would get inside THAT dinner was if he had a ticket. Fortunately for Allen, somebody took pity on him and coughed up the $75 bucks.

Advocate Trinity Hospital hosted Go Red Event Ladies were treated to a night of pampering and education Advocate Trinity Hospital, in conjunction with Power Circle Congregation, hosted a Go Red Event to support the fight against women’s heart disease. The ladies night out took place on February 23 at the Power Circle Center. Patrick Owens, coordinator of community relations at Trinity and one of the only men in attendance, said, “Power Circle always does such a nice job accommodating us. The reception room was set up beautifully. Red and pink balloons were everywhere!” Participants enjoyed inspirational messages, chair massages, facials, nutritional consultations

and raffle prizes. The dinner consisted of a heart healthy menu including salad, baked chicken, stuffed mushrooms and string beans. Dr. Claudia Johnson, a Trinity physician, spoke at the event about heart disease, specifically in minority women. Her presentation included advice on how to live heart healthy and the warning signs women should pay attention to. Jackie Rouse, community relations manager at Trinity, thought the evening went very well saying, “The event was very successful. I think the women learned quite a bit. They asked a lot of questions about risk reduction and what they could do to improve their heart health.”

ALL THE LADIES in attendance wore red to show their support for the cause.

ALL THE PARTICIPANTS were invited to receive complimentary massages.

Sapp says “Fresh Wind” speaks of how people need to experience an individual revival. “Some folks think that once they've experienced the will of God one time that's all they need. The truth is that our daily prayer ought to be for God to send a fresh wind on a consistent basis – that we may be replenished in spirit and function
