Massacre in Marquette Park Four dead, two wounded as man slaughters family By J. Coyden Palmer At Crusader press time, investigators were still piecing together details of what happened during the early morning hours of April 14th at a home in the Marquette Park community where four people, including three children were shot and killed. Preliminary evidence shows some sort of domestic dispute erupted and a man, who is in police custody, shot and killed his 30

mother and another relative were also shot and were in critical condition at Christ Hospital. Chicago Police say a squad car on patrol pulled into a nearby gas station and officers were alerted to the shootings by a 12-year-

old girl who had escaped the house and told officers what happened around 4:30 a.m. Officers arrived at the brick bungalow in the 7200 block of south Mozart where they found six victims. The two who were injured, identified as 13-year-old Demond

Larry; a nephew of the gunman and Leona Larry, 57, were both shot in the head. The suspect’s sister, Keisha Larry, said her mother is on life-support and her son was still in surgery after being shot in the face. (Continued on page 3)

Lenora “Doll” Carter - Revered NNPA Publisher - Mourned By Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Black publishers around the nation are mourning the sudden death of one of their own this week. Houston Forward Times Publisher Lenora “Doll” Carter, treasurer of the board of directors for the National Newspaper Publishers Association, and a former NNPA Publisher of the Year, was found dead of an apparent heart attack on Saturday morning, April 10. She was 69. “It is with a profound sadness that I inform some and confirm for others, the NNPA and the entire Black Newspaper Publishing world’s great loss of our National Treasurer, Lenora “Doll” Carter,” announced NNPA Chairman Danny

Lenora “Doll” Carter

Bakewell Sr. in a statement released late Sunday after speaking to her Houston family by phone. “Yesterday, I spoke with Doll’s daughter Karen and gave her my sincere condolences and offered any help we could provide to both her and her family on behalf of all NNPA Publishers. As was the case with her mother, Karen is proving to be a very strong and poised Black woman during this time of sadness and challenge to her family.” The body of the Houston journalistic icon will lie in state on Friday, April 16, starting at 12 Noon at Holman Street Baptist Church, 3501 Holman Street, Houston, Texas with a celebration to be held Friday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The Homegoing Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 17th at Holman Street

Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m. Karen Carter Richards, the youngest of Carter’s two daughters, associate publisher of the paper who has worked alongside her mother for 28 years, said in an interview with the NNPA News Service that she went looking for her mother after she did not answer repeated calls to her cell and home phones Saturday morning. She found her in her room by the bed. “She was already gone,” she said. She said her mother had been on a regiment of high blood pressure medication. “She believed in the Lord. That’s what helps me to continue to stand and not completely fall to pieces because all I know is that she would expect me to be there Monday morning and get this paper out (Continued on page 2)

Man accused of killing 17 year-old Jesse White Tumbler turned in by community By J. Coyden Palmer A man who police identified last month as a suspect in the coldblooded killing of a Chicago teen four years ago was captured at an apartment on the South Side last week. Eddie Fenton, 24, was the subject of a metropolitan-wide manhunt after Chicago Police Cold Case detectives identified him as the person they believe shot and killed Willie Williams III outside the Ford City movie theatre in 2006. According to police, Williams was trying to break up a fight between a friend and another person when Fenton allegedly shot him in the head with a handgun. Williams, a Robeson High School student-athlete and member of the Jesse White Tumbling Team, was planning to attend college when he was killed after watching the movie ATL with friends. His father, Willie Williams Jr., ironically has been working with at-risk youth for most of his life. But after his son fell victim to violence, he increased his presence in the community and has become a valuable asset in the fight against crime by helping youth make better choices.

“I feel I shouldn’t have to be here today,” said Williams outside the courthouse last week as Fenton was ordered held without bond. “I think I should be preparing to go to my son’s college graduation, not sit here staring at a man in a courtroom who murdered my son.” Police got a break in the case last year from a man who was arrested in Chicago Heights during a domestic violence dispute. They began tracking Fenton’s movements throughout Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois. He was captured by the U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force along with members of the Chicago Police Department without incident in an apartment in the 5200 block of south Prairie on April 6th. Police credit the public and African American community with aiding them in the capture of Fenton. During a press conference at a church on the city’s West Side, family members say they never lost faith that the person who did this to Willie would be captured. They say it’s an example of what can happen when the Black community decides it has had enough of something and wants to pull together to put a stop to it.

Eddie Fenton “The people in the community came together … we all need to start coming together for everything,” said the victim’s mother Indira Rutues. “Even if our kids are doing something wrong we need to make them accountable. “We can’t keep sugarcoating or hiding things in our own community.” Secretary of State Jesse White himself was present at the news conference to support the family. He invested much of his personal time into the case by helping the family endure over the past four years and attending functions held by the Willie Williams III Youth Foundation that was started after his death. White said our young

people need more guidance, positive outreach programs and protection from those who wish to do them harm. Also charged in the case are two associates of Fenton. The mother of Fenton’s child, Tytiyana Underwood, and his cousin Jameelah Williams, have been charged with concealing and harboring witnesses related in the case, Cook County prosecutors said. According to his attorney, Fenton worked with his father on various construction sites. Fenton, of the 7700 block of south Hoyne, has been in trouble with the law before, according to police. According to Chicago Police Detective Saul Del Rivero, Fenton was arrested in November of last year but at that time wasn’t a suspect in the Williams murder. “This dude’s rap sheet is unbelievable,” the older Williams said. “Getting him off the street was important because he was a threat to everyone in the community.” Father Michael Pfleger offered a $5,000 reward in the case and was adamant and animated during a news conference last month at his church when he said he was “sick and tired of the ‘no snitch’” mentali-

ty in the Black community. Like others he praised those who stepped forward and did the right thing in this case, but said it’s something that needs to happen all the time. “Once the criminals realize there is no safe harbor in our community and neighbors start sticking up for one another, this type of nonsense will cease,” Pfleger said. Police got a tip where Fenton was hiding the night before his arrest, detectives said. Police Supt. Jody Weis said the arrest was a massive collaboration effort from law enforcement agencies, the religious community and public that led to Fenton’s capture. However the fact that two other people have been charged with aiding Fenton during his time on the run still shows there is more work to be done in changing the mindset of some. “The fact that you can be charged with a serious crime for helping a fugitive serves as a deterrent in some cases, but not others,” Weis. “We as a city have to do a better job of changing the mentality of many in the community. The Williams case was featured on the television show America’s Most Wanted.

Lenora “Doll” Carter - Revered NNPA Publisher - Mourned (Continued from page 1) like always.” Mustering spiritual strength reflective of her mother’s, she said, “I know my Mom. We have never missed an issue in 50 years and we can’t start now.” Bakewell, NNPA Foundation Chair Dorothy R. Leavell, and other members of NNPA are shaken by the death of Carter, who less than a month ago celebrated Black Press Week alongside them in Washington. Leavell, who has known Carter for more than 40 years, persuaded her to run for treasurer in 2003 and nominated her as publisher of the year in 2004, said this week that Carter had hinted at not feeling well during the March 17-19 festivities in Washington. “She did not go to the Capitol with us this time because she said her feet were swollen and she couldn’t do a lot of walking. But, she did come to the NewsMaker Dinner and seemed to truly enjoy it,” said Leavell. In their decades of working together as Black Publishers, Leavell was among the eye witnesses to Carter’s soldier-like service to the Black Press. “Doll exemplifies the publisher that is dedicated to the Black press. She is active locally, but also consistently active on the national level through the National Newspaper Publishers Association. She truly deserves this honor, the highest honor bestowed by the NNPA Foundation,” Leavell said of

Chicago region leads the nation in 2010 Census response After little more than three weeks since Census questionnaires started arriving in home mailboxes, the U.S. Census Bureau’s Chicago Region leads the nation in the return of completed questionnaires. With about 67 percent of questionnaires returned by mail in the few weeks since most households received them between March 15-18, the Chicago Region leads among the Census Bureau’s 12 geographic regions. The Chicago Region consists of the states of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The region has 38 Local Census Offices. As of Friday, April 9, 2010, mail participation rates in the 12 cities where the Census Bureau’s Regional Census Centers are located range from (57) percent (Los Angeles) to Chicago’s 72 percent. The Chicago Region also topped in mailback participation rates in 2000 Census, with a final tally of 76 percent. Mail participation rates can be tracked at the following URL: http://2010.census.gov/2010ce nsus/take10map/. Regional Director Stanley Moore attributes the Chicago Re-

gion’s success to its extensive Complete Count Committee (CCC) network, which includes more than 2,200 local government and community groups who lead Census outreach and educational activities. A Complete Count Committee is a team of community leaders appointed by the highest-elected official or assembled by community leaders to develop and implement a locally-based outreach and awareness campaign for the 2010 Census. Stanley Moore and the Chicago Region pioneered the CCC concept, which was adopted nationally for the 2010 Census. “Having conducted more than five decennials over more than 50 years with the Census Bureau, we know that tapping the trusted voices that are in every community and engaging them to work on behalf of their own community during the Census, is the best way to achieve the highest results,” Moore said. Moore is the Census Bureau’s longest-serving employee in the nation. An innovation of the 2010

Census called the “rate tracker” allows communities to keep track of their participation in the Census online and compare their progress to other parts of the nation. A widget has also been created that allows Census partners to embed the rate tracker on their web sites to encourage all segments of a community to get involved in monitoring and prodding each other to grow the participation rates. The Census Bureau is also promoting mailback participation through friendly challenges among local governments, groups, states, etc., called “Take 10” challenges. The name Take 10 comes from the estimated 10 minutes the Census Bureau anticipates that it will take a typical household to complete the questionnaire. Moore cautions, however, that the region is not resting on its laurels; CCCs are fully engaged to keep the mailback participation growing until census takers begin going door to door on May 1. “We’re planning Marches to the Mailbox across the Chicago Region to boost the final returns prior to nonresponse follow-up,”

Moore said. The decennial census is the count of population and housing mandated by the U.S. Constitution. In 2010, more than 130 million questionnaires were mailed or delivered to homes between mid-March and April 1. The population count from each Census determines the apportionment of seats in the U.S.

House and the disbursement of more than $400 billion in federal funding each year. Census data are extremely confidential; U.S. law prohibits the release of any information that could be use to personally identify an individual. Census Bureau employees take a sworn oath to uphold confidentiality and violations could result in a fine of up to $250,000 and possible prison time.

while the two nieces were found in another room. Police say they will interview the surviving victims once they are well enough to speak and the doctors allow them too. In the meantime their best witness at this point is the 12year-old girl who was able to escape and the suspect himself. Congressman Bobby Rush reacted to news by denouncing the murders as “senseless violence” and a result of unchecked rage and a disregard for life. “We live in a society where increasingly people are devaluing human life,” Rush said. “To kill four people, including a pregnant woman and a baby, represents an insidious rage with no bounds. This is why we must ensure that people in crisis have access to mental health services, family counseling and conflict resolution programs. I do not know what went through the mind of the suspect who has reaped this devastation upon a family, upon a community and upon our nation. We all must grapple to make sense of the matter, if any sense can be made at all.” Rush added that he is grateful that police apprehended the suspect quickly. He also wants speedy justice for the victims in this case and said citizens must live together as a part of the human community and not tolerate guns and senseless violence.

Chicago Police Cmdr. John Kupczk described the crime scene as “horrific” and asked the public to pray for the family and officers who responded to the scene. He said the suspect was captured about 75 minutes after officers arrived on the scene. He was spotted by a patrol car near 59th and Racine and taken into custody without incident. No charges have been filed as police question the suspect. “Something like this is pretty incomprehensible,” Kupczk said. One of the victims, Keyshai Fields, was a junior at Robeson High School and was a big fan of Chicago Bulls player Derrick Rose. She was also four-months pregnant, according to family members. Ironically on her Facebook page, one of Keyshai’s favorite pages was a memorial one dedicated to those who lost their lives violently in Chicago recently. Featured on the page “I live in fear when the day will come, and memories are all I can hold” are teen victims Blair Holt, Sharkeisha Reed and Willie Williams III, who was also a Robeson student whose alleged murderer was just captured last week. The suspect in this case is a 32year-old man from Madison, Wisconsin who has a lengthy arrest record, according to police.

The suspect was last arrested three months ago for battery. His first arrest occurred in 1995. “At this time we believe the offender is in custody, and we believe we have the weapon used,” said Roderick Drew, news affairs director for the Chicago Police Department. “We have no reason to believe that the community is in danger and we do believe the suspect acted alone but our investigation will continue.” Antwonnierra Fields, 16, is a half-sister of Keyshai and was visibly distraught as she stood in the street comforted by her mother, Danielle Dillard. She said Antwonnierra and Keyshai were inseparable and that her daughter was often at the home where the murders occurred. Neighbor Carolyn Dean said the area is relatively safe but said she has noticed an increase in crime. She said Chicago in general is becoming too dangerous and will lose a lot of good citizens if something is not done about the shootings that are taking the lives of young people. “What you’re going to have are good people who are fearful of raising kids in Chicago,” Dean said. “They need to lock everybody up.” Police say all of the dead were found in first floor bedrooms. The wife and baby were found in one bedroom shot in the head,

OPINION

EDITORIAL MORE ABOUT THE NOBLEST PROFESSION When it comes to contributing to society while doing work that maintains you, there are a number of occupations and professions that come to mind. We are definitely grateful for policemen and firemen when we need them. We are equally grateful that someone empties the garbage and cleans the streets. One of the noblest professions, however, and one that is extremely maligned, is that of teachers. Teachers are the biggest scapegoats when it comes to blaming someone about the lack of achievement that some inner city schools face. Yet, the sacrifices that they often make go unnoticed and unappreciated, probably because if the real issues are identified, society would have to do something about them. It is easier to blame a whole group of people who’ve spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours on their educations. Recently, a Chicago Public School teacher, Michaelene Kelly, wrote a very impassioned letter to the editor that appeared in the Chicago Tribune’s “Voice of the People” section (Sunday, April 11, 2010). She pointed out many things that are overlooked. For example, she provided a profile of “...most of the teachers I have had the honor of working with in my 17 years with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS): They begin setting up their classrooms days before school opens. They are not paid for these days. They arrive at school early and stay late. They are not paid for their extra time. Most teachers take a minimum of two hours of work home with them each night. This is work that is over and above the 6.25 hours for which we are paid. We do not get a paid lunch break and many principals ignore the 20-minute break we are allowed in our contract.” She continues, “Additionally, many teachers spend countless off-duty hours writing grant applications with the hope of enriching their classrooms. During my career, I have received $49,225 in grants for my students.” She adds, “I have won national recognition as an ambassador In Education from the National Civic League and the MetLife Foundation and nominated another outstanding teacher for this same award. These awards brought an additional $10,000 to CPS. In other words, I have given back more than an average year’s salary to CPS. I am not unique.” She goes on to describe the unpleasant working conditions that are faced by many teachers who work in old buildings that are not air conditioned, and talks about the out-of-pocket money that is necessarily spent on continuing education units. Her story continues, “I have watched newscasters display contempt for an entire faculty in Rhode Island, fired because its school was not achieving. The implication is that the teachers deserved what they got.” She asks this question: “...would an entire police department be fired if crime statistics were up?” She makes an excellent point! Ms. Kelly’s lament should be seen in the backdrop of the current trend of closing “underperforming” schools. Many good, and even great teachers get caught up in this travesty because we, as a society, do not have the will to face the truth about public education, and that is just as it takes a community to raise a child, it also takes a community to educate one. There are hard decisions and systemic changes that must come about before we see real changes on a wide scale in the academic arena among many disenfranchised children. Teachers cannot do it alone, but one thing is for sure - as long as teachers remain disrespected scapegoats, few children will want to emulate them and follow the academic path. Think about that! 4

LETTER TO THE EDITOR “We Count” Forum Dear Editor: My personal take on the Forum is that Tavis was correct in holding this Forum. It raised awareness and understanding in the Black Community that Black people must become active participants in the public debate about issues - especially those that affect us- and fully participate in passing laws and policies that reflect our interest. The forum was designed to educate us and at the same time be a model for how we can use our voices in the political process to speak out to the President and really any elected official about our issues. We needed this discussion to clarify that we absolutely can not and should not expect Obama or any President to represent our interest and carry our water if we are silent and do not make our power to back him/her up as a voting block heard and felt. We learned the important lesson that Democracy is a participatory sport. The forum was a very important civics lesson - one that we Black People and really all Americans have been needing for a long time. Our leaders (bless their hearts) over the past 30 plus years have concentrated on only get-

ting Black folk to register and vote. They did not, and still don’t, teach us what to do after that to stay powerful. We registered, voted, and then sat back with the (false) expectation that the elected ones will make the changes that will be good for us—that they know our stories and can find the best solutions. And when it didn't happen as we expected, we grew cynical, angry, confused, sorrowful, and in some cases turned our backs on not only Obama, but the political process. This forum is a great starting point in correcting the massive misunderstanding about how we get and maintain our civic power to govern. It told us that we must organize and speak up about our issues, solution and impact of programs after the elections. We must know and speak out about proposed legislation that will impact us, learn how we can back up or help opposed bills that don’t. We must learn to follow and critique the drama in the legislative process and make our opinions known all along the processes. Even after something is passed that we think is good, we cannot turn our eyes away. We must learn to keep watchdogs we trust posted so that we can monitor and understand when we need to step back in and make corrections. And we must do it even if Jesus is the President or Governor or Mayor, etc. because

he can do what he does best when he's got his army of people visibly and vocally around him telling him what the problems are from their perspective and putting them on the table to talk out what we think are the best solutions under the circumstances and with the hand that we are holding. BEYOND THE RHETORIC

HBO’s Lily White World War By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist Cable television’s largest movie channel, HBO, has proudly shown two fictitious (they want you to believe it is a documentary) classics about World War II. Band of Brothers dealt with the Euro-

Harry C. Alford pean Theater and now Pacific is portraying the battles of the Pacific from a very racist point of view. Despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of African Americans

gave their blood, sweat and tears to this noble challenge these shows are void of any Black participation. That is just one big lie! A lie that is racist to the core and we must call them out. They are trying to rewrite history to the detriment of Black legacy and pride and that is more than sinful. It is a crime. The fact is that from the first day, Pearl Harbor, to the very end we were there in all theaters and during every major battle. Yes, just like in all other major wars the United States could not have prevailed in World War II if it weren’t for the efforts of Black military participants. Recently, HBO showed a segment of Pacific dealing with the Battle of Guadalcanal. Funny, they showed no Blacks. My two uncles, Joseph and Isaiah Brown were there and they had many stories to tell about it. I have a copy of a letter my Uncle Joe wrote to my grandmother from his fox hole. It is so sentimental and I cherish it so much. He would also tell me about his days in Melbourne, Australia which the HBO segment showed. He remembered the great break-

fast of T-bone steak, eggs and a side plate of biscuits all for just nine cents. In route to the Solomon Islands my Uncle Ike (Isaiah) was thrown off his ship during a storm. They barely rescued him and his buddies. My father-in-law, Charles DeBow, was one of the original four Tuskegee Airmen. He knocked out tanks in North Africa, Nazi artillery in Italy and radar sites in France in preparation of the Invasion of Normandy. They want us to think that the Tuskegee Airmen only ran protection for our bombers. Dad flew a P-38 dive bomber and flew missions almost daily. I am so proud to have his blood flowing through the veins of my sons. One of my mentors, the late Arthur A. Fletcher, crossed Normandy Beach. There were over 40,000 Blacks who crossed during the Normandy Invasion unlike what Steven Spielberg and HBO want you to believe. While performing guard duty one night in Northern France, Art was shot through his spleen. He would proudly show me the twelve inch scar to prove it. His racist superiors would not

put him in for a Purple Heart because they claim that since the bullet went completely through him they had no proof if it were a Nazi bullet or just a bullet from one of those red neck 3rd Army bigots trying to shoot them a N-----. Another mentor of mine, the late Leroy Toombs, served in a submarine in the Pacific. Our Pacific submarines decimated Japanese supply lines and Leroy loved to talk about their exploits. One morning they sunk three ships within twenty minutes, probably a record. They had so many prisoners they couldn’t take any more. Thus, they had to surface and shoot all survivors as they could divulge their coordinates to the Japanese Navy. Yes, war is hell. The late Congressman Parren J. Mitchell, another mentor of mine, had his World War II stories also. Parren was a bona fide hero. One day he deliberately fell on a live German grenade during a battle in Italy in order to save three other soldiers. Well, they gave him his Purple Heart, unlike Art, but he really deserved a Medal of Honor. There are thousands of these stories about our brave African-

Americans who served their country so well even though they had to return to a Jim Crow society. They were strong and proud. Even though they were discriminated against as they wore their uniforms with battle decorations they remained strong. So brilliant was the service of our tank battalions, paratroopers, airmen, soldiers, sailors and marines. It was like we do on basketball courts and football fields today. These heroes paved the road that General Colin Powell and others would follow. I am a proud veteran but not a minute will pass that I don’t forget the great Blacks who came before my time and created this great legacy. This is why I am so upset at HBO. These portrayals of World War II are big, racist lies and they are trying to do a very dastardly thing – rewrite history to the detriment of a whole race. We need to organize and have them removed from television. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO, of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Will Obama Fight for a Liberal on the Supreme Court? The coming resignation of Justice John Paul Stevens from the Supreme Court sets up a new fight for his successor and a question that I –and others – have is will President Obama appoint someone as liberal as Stevens has become. An indication of where the President might be coming from is the comment that he made when the Citizens United case was decided last year. Then, he said it was a victory for powerful interests like banks, oil companies and etc. that, “marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans.” He repeated this sentiment at his State of the Union address and after the recent announcement by Justice Stevens that he would resign, saying Stevens’ replacement would be “someone who knows that in a democracy, powerful interests must not be allowed to drown out the voices of ordinary citizens.” This theme assumes that the President will appoint someone who is clearly allied with the politics of the people rather than

powerful interests. But the pressures on the President are inexorable. The most important is the system of appointment which represented the sentiments of the white majority that are right-of-center. Conservative politics would not be as powerful without their support since most whites vote Republican. Justice Stevens, a Republican appointed by a Republican president, said that the Court had moved beyond him in becoming more conservative. So, when the advice by pundits and Republicans is for the President to pick a “centrist” or a “moderate” they mean someone within the ideological orbit of the dominant white majority. I point to the dominant white majority as the arena where this decision will be made because Blacks and other people of color are largely excluded from the legislative debate and the decision power that determines who will sit on a court that ostensibly represents all Americans. Blacks are largely missing in the Senate which confirms the Justices and the public debate routinely excludes their opinions. The last time I was interviewed on CSPAN I said that Justice Clarence Thomas

Ron Walters was a product of the Conservative movement and an embarrassment to the African American community and I have not been invited back since. Another pressure is to what extent the coming debate over Stevens’ replacement will effect the fall elections. I agree that the nominee will signal how much of a political problem Obama can take because I can hear his colleagues who are up for election cautioning him not to make it harder with a choice that would inflame their voting constituents. With the Tea Party phenomenon having emboldened the Re-

publicans to begin thinking they will take back the House and Senate, Democrats are already running scared. The contradiction however, is that the White House has to think about putting a vote on the Supreme Court that will protect the Health Care package just passed and signed into law, part of which may surely be challenged and some of it may reach the Supreme Court. I think that the Black community should support Eric Holder. Now I know that some view this as a silly suggestion and that Obama can’t make such an unsophisticated political choice. However, my mood is bolder and my political intelligence tells me that we didn’t make strides in American politics through sophistication alone. At this moment, my sense of Black politics says that we have to use our leverage to engage the essential debate on the character of the next Supreme Court nominee that takes place outside of our community and doesn’t take our views into consideration. Thus, our support for Holder becomes a vehicle for intervening in that decision to bring some balance to a right-of-center debate and to represent the interests Saturday, April 17, 2010

of the people that Obama says must be reflected on the Supreme Court. In other words, we have to help make him put as progressive a person on the Court as possible. Intervention is very important because the absence of Stevens will ironically weaken the liberal or progressive stance on the Court because a junior person will not have the status to negotiate a vote away from the conservative bloc to create a winning majority for progressive causes. Since we live at a time when Conservative activists are tolerated and liberal activists are not, it will require a genuine mobilization on the Left to make sure that a liberal is nominated to the Court because “centrists” and “moderates” are untrustworthy in the current context. Also, since the current cast of prospects emerged from the last nomination fight, if not Holder this time, maybe next. While I was sitting in Church in Sunday I realized that the inability to translate to our youth that all is not lost in he light of day and they are not believing what is put to them from the pulpit each Sunday. As a retired police officer I found out that our youth are frightened by what they have found from the Bible and what has been related to them by those who they expect what comes from their mouth . . . especially gang members, who are on the streets and those who are incarcerated. They believe they will be trapped inside a penal system if they are not able to get out of the structure and will be a victim of those who are not of their kind. They have a good sense of what will happen to them by the security personnel who might flee from their responsibilities. More that likely they would because of their fluid position considering their numbers. I’m not saying that this might be the action. Let me say for what is going on in government you will find that the systems are falling apart, especially in those services . . .especially those services that they have expected over the years. The heat is expected this year just for the

delegation and left only the Ambassador to South Africa to represent them. The role of the United States and Western Europe (WEO) to subvert the agenda “provided the indisputable proof ” that the issues we fought for, to be included in the Durban Declaration, went to the “heart of the World Conference Against Racism.” For over two years, representatives from the Durban 400 traveled throughout the world attending the various preparatory meetings for the WCAR, advocating our agenda that was simple and focused: 1) Declaration of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, Slavery, and Colonialism as Crimes Against Humanity; 2) Reparations for African people on the continent and in the Diaspora; 3) Recognition of the Economic Base of Racism. As the (Non Governmental Organization) International Association Against Torture pointed out in their intervention at the WCAR, “From the beginning they were clear (The U.S. and the WEO Group) that a conference which addressed racism and racial discrimination could only have one outcome— to subject them to the same human rights standards which they imperiously demand that the developing world uncomplainingly submit to and to identify them as perpetrators of history’s greatest crime against humanity, the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery.” How mighty can the United States be without acknowledging, apologizing, and paying reparations to African people for the Greatest Crime Against Humanity they participated in, the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, Slavery, and Colonialism? As researched by the UNESCO Slave Trade Project, the Museum of the Atlantic Slave Trade, and the Harvard Database on Slave Voyages, twenty-eight to fortytwo million African people were captured and enslaved between 1441 and 1888… Four to six million Africans, 40% of all captives and slaves, were murdered or died along the entire “way of death…” Just as other people never forget their history and the tragedies and crimes committed against them, neither should African people. Therefore, the Durban

Another important major lesson within the we- must- organize- and -speak -out- lesson is that Black people should not be afraid to criticize Obama for taking positions we do not like or for not aggressively and specifically addressing critical issues we Black people face. The Forum was right to chastise Obama for not using his bully pulpit to make Congress fix our issues as a priority. However, my response is that while the bully pulpit is a power center, the U.S. President is not a king with power to make unilateral changes at will by the wave of an imperial pen. He has to work with Congress who actually passes laws. The strategy of how you work with Congress and the difficulty of doing that successfully in the face of massive highly organized media driven resistance by the conservative forces opposing him

400 declared a victory in contributing to the final outcome of the Durban Declaration that reflects the interests of African people by citing: “We acknowledge that slavery and the slave trade, including the transatlantic slave trade, were appalling tragedies in the history of humanity not only because of their abhorrent barbarism but also in terms of their magnitude, organized nature and especially their negation of the essence of the victims and further acknowledge that slavery and the slave trade are a crime against humanity and should always have been so…” Although the language of the Durban Declaration did not specifically call for reparations for African people, it is now our duty to intensify our organizing in demanding the United States Government and U. S. Corporations pay reparations. We must continue to educate the African Community of America on the continued need to organize and revitalize the Reparations Movement.

Maurice Clayton Most children believe that the end of the world WILL come to an END. Don’t believe that the World will END at anytime soon, THE BIBLE HAS PUT IN A SURETY THAT NONE, BUT THE FATHER; OR THE SON (JESUS) knows when that day will come. If you don’t believe that, there will be signs in the HEAVENS . . .Gang members have used this ploy to recruit their members through fear of gangs.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR and the Democrats is the major civics lesson we have seen in living color for over a year. I think Tavis and the forum speakers could have made the point more clear that our power to criticize and lobby should not just be directed at Obama, but should also and most especially include the legislators. We must learn to point our fingers of scorn or give a pat on the back to both Obama and his administrative team and to Congress, state and local lawmakers. Tavis' wonderful living civics lesson is a bit misleading to the average citizen who may not really know and understand how the balance of powers between the executive and legislative branches work. Forum guest Ron Walters made this point very well, but the Obama focus of the discussion probably pushed this point way into the background. In the follow up steps to the conference, I hope that high quality, hands-on, citizen participation formal civics lessons given in schools, churches, institutions and in popular media are part of a major outcome of the work that comes

from this Forum to implement and reinforce what we have learned will be to raise this lesson high. The Forum was an excellent living learning tool - a civics lessonas I keep saying for how we can organize our power by participating in the public dialogue talking to each other in a public way, to speak up to our elected officials about what our issues are, telling both our stories and our ideas about solutions. Part of what made it so good and so effective was that it was in a learning institution, it engaged many forum guests that were formal educators, and that it used many media platforms to promote it and conduct the pre, during and post discussions about what we heard and learned. We need that form of learning. Because we really do not have good civics curriculums in our schools, in addition to pushing for that change, we need our Black media to be our teachers We need the echo effect having the forum repeated and spread in mass media that all ages and income strata of Black people can

MARK DONAHUE, President of the Fraternal Order of Police, Chicago Lodge #7, presented the Lifesaving Award to Chicago Police Officer Brian Baader, recently. While on patrol, Officer Baader received a radio call regarding a woman trapped in a fire on the second floor of a building in the 10000 block of South King Drive. Officer Baader arrived at the scene and quickly entered the burning building, calling out for the victim. With zero visibility, no proper fire equipment and smoke filling his lungs Officer Baader was able to locate the woman in a doorway. Grabbing her forearms with both hands, he rushed her down a smoke-filled staircase and out the front door. Both officer Baader and the victim were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and injuries. They were treated and later released. Pictured from left are William Dougherty, 1st Vice President, Officer Brian Baader and Mark Donahue, President F.O.P.

Extended Coverage The good news is that Americans are living longer than ever. The not-so-good news is that 75 percent of those 65 or older are expected to need long-term care some time during their lifetime. *** The cost can be considerable. BUSINESS America’s Best Hope for Real Financial Reform By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer As the U. S. Senate prepares for a pivotal vote on America’s financial future, the emerging scenario is reminiscent of the biblical story of David and Goliath, where a young lad’s slingshot felled an enormous giant. A critical U.S. Senate floor vote on financial reform known as Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010 is expected to be one of the first votes taken after lawmakers return from the current spring recess. For millions of Americans, its passage could be the slingshot that aims at correcting the neglectful oversight and abusive financial practices that together have created the current crisis. When average citizens wonder why Capitol Hill does not seem to understand the plight of families struggling with record high unemployment, more foreclosures, and a steep rise in personal bankruptcies, a review of the funds being spread over our nation’s seat of government begin to explain why things are happening as they are. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the $3.9 billion

that financial interests have spent to influence Washington policy over the last decade represents more lobbying money than from any other industry. In 2009 alone, $465 million spent by the financial industry on lobbying Washington, translates into expenditures of $1.4 million a day and includes 1,726 registered federal lobbyists paid to woo 100 U.S. Senators and 455 Members of Congress. Moreover, many former members of Congress and their former staffs are now employed by the financial services industry. Included among these prominent former elected leaders are Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the House of Representatives; Trent Lott, former Senate Majority Leader; Dick Gephardt and Dick Armey, both former House Majority Leaders. The tremendous investment meant to preserve the financial status quo and block changes that could prevent another financial crisis are not intended to serve the public’s interests; but rather to preserve and increase the industry’s considerable profits. According to the Center for Responsible Lending’s most recent

Early

put the

Charlene Crowell research: Since 2007, 6.6 million foreclosures have been initiated nationwide; without financial reform, the number of foreclosures will total as many as 12 million over the next five years; In 2009, families living near foreclosures lost $502 billion in property values; Each year, payday loans strip nearly $3.5 billion from working families in fees for churned loans; and

While at least two nationallychartered banks have begun offering payday loans, their regulator, the Office of the Controller of the Currency (OCC) has condoned that development which brings triple-digit interest rates. Late last year, the House of Representatives passed its own version of financial reform. Since that time, Senate action has been delayed for months by the lack of bi-partisan support in the Senate Banking Committee of a version offered by its chair, Sen. Chris Dodd. However just before the spring recess, the Senate version passed out of committee on a party-line vote. Fortunately for consumers, one member of Congress has offered firm and public support for real financial reform. In a recent guest column for The Hill, a widelyread publication for Washington insiders, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), wrote in part, “The greed and excess displayed on Wall Street for too long will only be reined in with effective government regulation.” Continuing she added, “Currently at least seven federal agencies share oversight of the financial system, but consumer pro-

tection is not the priority for any of them, and we have seen the results of their neglect: consumers have been taken advantage of and led to financial ruin.” Now while Senators are back home working in their district offices and meeting with constituents, it is a timely opportunity to strongly urge their respective support of the proposed Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) with no weakening amendments to diminish the bureau’s effectiveness. The proposed CFPB would provide for the first time in our nation’s history a single agency whose sole mission is to protect the financial interests of consumers. From mortgages, to credit cards, auto and payday lending, the current maze of bureaucracy would be streamlined into a single office. CFPB would also function independently and be empowered with the authority to write and enforce rules. An abundance of phone calls, visits, letters and e-mail to Senators could mean the difference between pro-consumer reform or more of the well-heeled influence of Washington lobbyists and cor(Continued on page 16)

HEROES IN THE HOOD Outstanding Chicago teens honored at 17th Annual Heroes in the ’Hood Awards Presentation Community leaders, educators, mentors, mentees and the like gathered together once again to salute teens who have made a difference in the neighborhood through their unselfish acts of kindness. On Thursday (April 15th) honored role models, Reverend Willie T. Barrow from the Rainbow/PUSH coalition, Roberto Gonzalez from the Chicago Bears and Kimberly McCullough from AT&T enjoyed socializing with teens from many walks of life at a reception sponsored by Dominick’s at the DuSable Museum of African American History. Launched in 1993 by GO Airport Express, with the support of the Chicago Crusader and the DuSable Museum of African

American History the program’s aim has been to identify young people who realize the impact they can make on the world around them through selfless acts of giving of themselves. Under the leadership of John McCarthy, CEO of GO Airport Express, shuttle service providing transportation to and from Chicago’s Midway and O’Hare airports and Dorothy R. Leavell, owner and publisher of the Chicago Crusader Newspaper along with the unwavering support of the DuSable Museum for these past 17 years, the program has been able to encourage teens living in areas decimated by violence and other ills associated with poverty, to build better and

stronger communities through positive attitudes and behaviors and know that they are not alone in their quests to making life better for humankind. The festivities began at 6 P.M. with a reception followed by the program, which was emceed by FOXNews reporter/anchor Darlene Hill. Hill, whose delivery to the youth was once again invigorating, shared anecdotes encouraging the young people to continue on their paths to living successful lifestyles. Each of the honored role models shared with the audience tidbits on how to

continue to be their best and maybe someday find themselves speaking to a group of youth such as themselves which might lead to their someday being called upon to be an honored role model. This week’s edition shows photos from the 16th annual Heroes in the ’Hood program where Food Network’s Chef Jeff Henderson, White Sox legend Minnie Minoso, and Chicago 2016 Olympics committee director Valerie Barker Waller were honored role models. Also introduced last year was the Stop the Violence

(Simon & Schuster Publishing Company; $29.99). In this gorgeous, richly illustrated book, Paula Deen shares a full year of Southern living. Whether it's time to put out your best china and make a real fuss, or just gathering for some sweet tea on the porch at dusk, Savannah style is about making folks feel welcome in your home. With the help of decorator and stylist Brandon Branch, you'll learn how to bring a bit of Southern charm into homes from Minnesota to Mississippi. For each season, there are tips on decorating and entertaining. Sleeping spaces, including, of course, the sleeping porch are the focal point of this chapter. In the fall, cooler weather brings a return to more formal entertaining in the dining room, and in winter, attention returns to the hearth, as Paula and her neighbors put out their best silver and show you how they celebrate the holidays. Paula loves getting a peek at her neighbors parlors, so she's included photographs of some of Savannah's grandest homes. From the vast grounds of Lebanon Plantation to the whimsically restored cottages on Tybee Island, you'll see the unique blend of old-world elegance and laid-back hospiitality that charmed Paula the moment she arrived from Albany, Georgia, with nothing but two hundred dollars and a pair of mouths to feed. And she isn't shy about giving you a window into her own world, either. From her farmhouse kitchen o her luxurious powder room, you'll see how Paula lives when she's not in front of the camera. Packed with advice and nostalgia, Paula Deen's Savannah Style makes it easy to bring gracious Southern living to homes north and south of the Mason-Dixon Line. 12

Date Night Date Night is such a funny movie with two comic actors Tiny Fey and Steve Carell as a couple who desperately need a night out on the town. Their marital and parenthood duties have become rote; they even have it figured out that “short sex” would suffice in a rush, if they are just too pooped to really get involved. As they both go through their professional days, he’s a financial analyst, and Claire is a Realtor, Phil realizes that the spark might not exactly be there, as it once was, and he figures a night on the town at a fancy restaurant named Claw in New York City’s Manhattan is the ticket for the New Jersey sleepy suburban couple. Once they arrive in Manhattan, a bit too late for a dinner reservation, they are treated pretty poorly by the guy at the front door. So, as they are waiting at the bar for a possible table, the Tripplehorns are called three or four times, and Phil decides to pretend that he and his wife are the “no-shows.” Bad mistake, bad,

and compromising photos of a District Attorney. But they aren’t believable, and this sets off a bumpy night, as the Fosters try to figure out how to get the flash drive, determine just what’s on it and just how much trouble they have gotten themselves into by taking someone else’s reservation.

That also seems to be the theme throughout the movie that the Fosters had the audacity to take another couple’s reservation. As they tell their story, character after character is amazed that they would actually steal another couple’s dinner reservation. (Continued on page 16)

On the banks of the bayou, a small community springs to life with stories of love, sexuality and coming-of-age. Forced to choose between her dying mother and her own dreams, she makes a lifechanging decision. Oya’s subsequent path to womanhood leads her to a crossroads where she finds herself torn between settling down…and just settling. The Brothers Size: When Oshooshi Size is released from jail, he goes to work in his brother’s car repair shop. When his best friend from prison also shows up, a tense tug of war results. The Brothers Size is a fierce and honest look at the complex bonds of brotherhood. Marcus; Or the Secret of Sweet: Marcus is sixteen. He is also coming to terms with his sexuality while uncovering the mysterious secrets of his family’s past. An entrancing coming-of-age story, Marcus is about the difficult quest for identity in an outspoken and strong-willed community. The Chicago Crusader

The musical ‘STOMP’ will return to Chicago The musical “STOMP” returns for a limited one-week engagement at Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre, 18 W. Monroe St. April 27 – May 2, 2010. The return will also bring some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire tubes and paint cans. “After creating new routines for “STOMP OUT LOUD” in Las Vegas, [co-creator] Luke Cresswell and I decided it was time to rework elements of our main production, ‘STOMP’,” said co-creator Steve McNicholas. “‘STOMP’ has evolved a great deal ever since its first incarnation at the Edinburgh Festival. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Chicago ministerial icon Reverend Dr. Claude S. Wyatt passes Reverend Dr. Claude S. Wyatt, Jr., urban minister, Civil Rights leader, political confidant, and founding pastor of the Vernon Park Church of God passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2010. Reverend Wyatt was 88 years old. For over 44 years, Reverend Wyatt’s concern for the total community involved his ministry in education and training, social action, and a caring outreach which gave itself to heavy counselling and guidance services to families, marriages, youth, and particularly those whose lives were in economic and social despair. According to a family spokesman he was responsible for rehabilitating alcoholics and drug addicts; worked with youth, gangs, and juveniles in trouble. His concern for social derelicts caused him to live for a while in Chicago’s “Skid Row” district during his earlier years as a part of a special training as an Urban Pastor. Reverend Wyatt is responsible for taking men and women off the street who now serve in the ministry and other professions. Beyond his local confines, Reverend Wyatt, at the request of the Ministry in Kingston, Jamaica’s

Capital, served in a series of Evangelical and Social Outreach Ministries for several years as speaker and instructor. As a monument to his work the Wyatt Day Care Center was established in his honor. Reverend Wyatt formerly associated with the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as Chicago Director of the Ministerial Leadership Training Program for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), was also one of the organizers of Operation Breadbasket and Operation PUSH. He also served as a board member of People United to Serve Humanity (PUSH); a constituent for Urban Ministries for the Church of God, Anderson, Indiana, and a member of the Chicago Urban League; a former member of the Chicago Baptist Institute, and a resource person to various religious, community and business groups. Reverend Wyatt was also a writer. He is credited with having written two unpublished books for the Anderson School of Theology. These books were written for pastors with limited education. The titles of the books are “CHURCH MANAGEMENT AND FINANCES”

and Professional Persons. In 1989, he was inducted into the DuSABLE Umbrella Alumni, Inc. Hall of Fame. “His inspirational leadership and effective Christian witness, not only in Chicago, but across the nation, and around the globe, have encouraged many young people to enter the ministry and do great things for God,” a statement from the family read. “Dr. Wyatt has not only provided dynamic spiritual leadership to his congregation, but has served as an anchor and stabilizing force to the Greater Chicago Community, and citizens of this great city.” Reverend Dr. Claude S. Wyatt

After the unexpected death of the late Mayor Harold Washington, and the subsequent election

both the Sawyer and Daley administrations. In 2000, he retired from the ministry, after naming the Reverend Jerald January of Colorado Springs, as his designated successor. The church officially bestowed upon him the title: FOUNDER AND PASTOR EMERITUS. He remained actively involved on a limited basis until his death. Services for Reverend Wyatt will be held at the Vernon Park Church of God, 9011 South Stony Island Avenue, beginning with a memorial service on Sunday, April 18 at 6:00 P.M. On Monday, April 19 his body will lay in state from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. with funeral services

ABOUT ACCESS Access Community Health Network is comprised of nearly 60 Joint Commission-accredited community health centers throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs. It provides high-quality, cost-effective, safe, comprehensive

primary, preventive and specialty health care to more than 215,000 individual patients annually, onethird of whom are uninsured. Vis-

paign using the “power of the pulpitâ€? to encourage women to get mammography screenings. As you know, the church plays a vital role in the lives of African-Americans and Hispanics—mobilizing, informing and raising awareness about pertinent issues in our communities. The program was launched in Chicago in 2007 and has grown rapidly—from 67,000 women being pinned and hearing the message in Illinois in 2007 to 500,000 women being pinned and hearing the message throughout the state by the year 2009. Additionally, the campaign has expanded outside of Illinois to Iowa, Kansas, South Carolina, Louisiana, West Virginia and Indiana. In fact, the Progressive National Baptist Convention encouraged its churches throughout the United States to hold Pin-A-Sister Sunday™ ceremonies in October. More than 20,000 women at 100 churches in 18 states were pinned and heard the message about receiving mammography screenings. Also, in October 2009, a Pin-ASister™/Examinate Comadre™ ceremony was held for the first time on Capitol Hill, sponsored by the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the House Cancer Caucus. This Mother’s Day, although as-

sembled in hundreds of houses of worship, women will join in a sign of solidarity to: • recognize breast cancer survivors • allow them to briefly share their testimony • encourage women to get mammography screenings • allow women to pin each other with pink ribbons to symbolize their commitment to get screened Pin-A-Sister™/Examinate Comadre™ began as a faith-based initiative but has expanded into a social network, where AfricanAmerican and Hispanic women not only commit to receive Pap smears and mammograms, but also fellowship. “Last year was our first year participating with Pin-A-Sister™/ Examinate Comadre™, and it was phenomenal! It is extremely important that women of color are aware of how breast cancer is affecting our community,â€? said Pastor Jocelyn Thornton, pastor of Orland Park-based Emmanuel Covenant Church. Throughout this year, ACCESS expects to reach more than 650,000 women throughout the state of Illinois and nationally. In Illinois for screenings, women are connected through the STAND Against Cancer program, a statefunded program that addresses racial and ethnic disparities in breast cancer awareness and treatment by targeting African-American, Hispanic and low-income and uninsured women. The program offers low-cost to free mammograms and Pap smears to eligible participants. Initiated in 2002, the program provides follow-up treatment through the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. Access Community Health Network is the lead sponsor of Pin-ASister™/Examinate Comadre™, with additional funding and support from The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University; The
