By Pharoh Martin NNPA National Correspondent The news of the death of former NAACP Executive Director and CEO Benjamin Hooks has reverberated to the very core of America’s civil rights and political leadership, according to statements that poured into the NNPA News Service last week. “Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks was among the greatest Americans of the 20th Century,” said NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “He was a giant of hope and humanity who, as executive director and CEO of the NAACP, expanded the circle of opportunity in our nation for millions by greatly accelerating the desegregation of our largest corporations.” Jealous described the 85-year-old Dr. Hooks as “simply the greatest living person to have served as Executive Director and CEO of the NAACP.” Hooks was also a Baptist minister, a lawyer, an FCC commissioner, a businessman and a judge. But he was best known as a civil rights leader who resurrected the nation’s oldest civil rights organization as its long-time executive director from 1977 to 1992. A viewing for Hooks was held Monday, April 19 at Greater New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Detroit. His funeral was held on Wednesday in Memphis. Under Hooks’ leadership, the organization led the way of pressuring Congress to pass the extension of such landmark legislation as the civil rights and voting rights bills. Al-
Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks so, NAACP’s membership base reportedly grew by hundreds of thousands during his tenure. “Dr. Hooks led this organization to new heights, and we will continue to honor his legacy by fighting on, in his words’ with truth, justice and righteousness on our side,” stated NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock. “…He was a civil rights icon and my mentor and personal friend. He (Continued on page 3)
Vote on proposed Wal-Mart delayed By J. Coyden Palmer A zoning committee vote on a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter in the 9th Ward has been postponed until next month. On Wednesday, April 21, Alderman Anthony Beale and Zoning Committee Chairman Alderman Danny Solis (25th) decided to table the discussion so more time could be offered to Wal-Mart to meet with union leaders and address concerns. In addition
to several committee members not being able to attend this week’s scheduled meeting, Solis also cited that this week’s meeting already had a heavy agenda. He said a May 7th date would be better to meet exclusively about Wal-Mart. The delay is just another part of a fouryear-long war in which union leaders and some community members have fought to keep the world’s largest retailer out of Chicago. Those against Wal-Mart say the
retail giant kills off other businesses in the area and does not treat employees fairly. Chicago has tried unsuccessfully thus far to get Wal-Mart to agree to pay certain wages and offer an attractive benefits package. “The City of Chicago is poised to force Wal-Mart on Black communities under the proposition that ‘any job is better than no job,’” said Reverend Booker S. Vance, of Good Jobs Chicago. “Taxpayers should not subsidize the richest corporation in the
world on the backs of poor people. Eight dollars an hour for 33 hours a week, after taxes and no health insurance, does not provide anyone with a better standard of living or help to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. In fact, the average WalMart worker will not be able to buy boots anywhere else. Consequently, workers would still be subsidized by taxpayers in (Continued on page 16)

She became noticeably ill March 18 while sitting in the conference room of the headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women talking with her administrative assistant, Christine Tony. Tony, who has travelled with Dr. Height for the past 25 years, told NNPA that she noticed that Dr. Height had become short of breath and was not finishing her sentences. Doctors at the Howard University Hospital admitted her to the hospital that day despite her protests that she desired to receive the esteemed Lifetime Achievers Award slated to be given to her that night from the National Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation during its Black Press Week celebration. She remained hospitalized ever since and died shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday. Dorothy R. Leavell, NNPA Foundation chair, said in her letter to Dr. Height notifying her that the Black Press of America wished to honor her during Black Press Week, “Your leadership throughout the years is substantial and we want to show you how much we appreciate your hard work and continuing vigilance throughout your illustrious career. “The National Newspaper Publishers Association’s (NNPA) membership feels that you exemplify the

chaired the executive committee of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the largest civil rights organization in the nation. With every advancement, Height often reveled in how far African Americans have come. “In my lifetime, I have witnessed the evolution of desegregation, the spread of civil rights and the rise of possibilities for people regardless of race and sex,” Height said in a recent statement. “I have also recently witnessed the passage of our health-care bill, something people of all different races and genders can applaud.” A Gifted Student and Speaker Born on March 24, 1912, in Richmond, Va., Height was a gifted student, winning a $1,000 scholarship after excelling in a national oratorical contest on the U.S. Constitution. Her skills awarded her entry into Barnard College, but upon arrival, Height was denied entrance into the institution. Barnard had a two AfricanAmericans-per-academic year limit, and Height would have surpassed the quota. Instead, Height earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in four years from New York University in educational psychology. Later, she continued her education with post-graduate work at the New York School of Social Work and Columbia University, whose educational system includes Barnard and three other undergraduate schools. Height now has 36 honorary doctorates from institutions such as Howard University, Harvard University, Spelman College, Bennett College, Princeton University and Columbia. Height began her life of public service as a New York City Welfare Department caseworker. Leading the Christian Youth Movement of North America during the New Deal era, Height worked tirelessly to prevent lynching, desegregate schools and the armed forces, reform the criminal justice system, appoint more African American women to government positions and afford free access to public accommodations. She served as vice president of the body and was chosen as one of 10 American youths to attend the World Conference on Life and Work of Churches in Oxford, England, and a YWCA representative at the World Conference of Christian Youth in Amsterdam, Holland. The young Height’s next trip was to Hyde Park, N.Y., where she and nine other American youth spent the weekend in the home of Eleanor Roosevelt to plan the World Youth Conference to be held at Vassar College. Height continued her life of service and her quest to improve the gender and racial gap in the nation into adulthood. The Chicago Crusader

Dr. Benjamin Hooks Remembered . . . Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said that Hooks’ “contributions resonate within the African-American community but will have a lasting impact on all Americans.” NAACP created the Benjamin L. Hooks Distinguished Service Award, which is awarded to persons who promote equal opportunity through policies and programs. National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said, “He cautioned us never to forget the struggles of our forbearers, and never to take for granted our gains. He challenged us all to be our best, and in his memory we renew our commitment to social and economic justice and personal empowerment.”

He received the medal from President Bush in 2007. Obama said, “As I was running for this office, I had the honor of spending some time with Dr. Hooks, and hearing about his extraordinary place in our Ameri-
can story.” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that Hooks helped shape the modern day civil rights movement “With great patriotism, he led the day-to-day efforts to root out discrimination and injustice and worked on behalf of equality and opportunity for all Americans for more than half of a century,” Pelosi said. “Dr. Hooks had a remarkable career: as a judge, an FCC Commissioner, and as a minister. He was a man of deep faith and bold convictions. He was also a man of action; in his calm yet determined way, he worked so that our nation would live up to the aspirations of all of its people.”

OPINION
EDITORIAL SAVE MOTHER EARTH We just celebrated Earth Day, which is traditionally observed on April 22 of each year. The notion of celebrating Earth has become especially urgent in light of the many changes that are becoming evident. Within the past four months, we have witnessed at least 4 major earthquakes, which have left thousands and thousands of people dead. Currently, a volcano is wreaking havoc all over Europe, grounding air flights and stranding many in lands far from their homes. Volcanic ash is comprised of minute pieces of glass, and aircraft traveling through the smoke and debris could experience life-threatening, engine disabling damage. The threat is so severe that President Barack Obama had to cancel a scheduled flight to Poland in order to pay respects at the funeral of Lech Kaczynski, the president of Poland who lost his life, along with his wife and 94 others, in an unfortunate plane crash. On other fronts, there are people who are alarmed by the prospect of global warming. It is being said that the ice caps are melting, and with it will come a rise in sea levels that has the potential of inundating continental coast lines. Actually, global warming is giving in to a more accurate term, "climate change," as it becomes evident that weather patterns are shifting and becoming more and more chaotic. Storms, hurricanes and tornadoes, and attendant tidal waves are intensifying and are more frequent. As a result of climate change, and of the disrespect that we have(are) showing our terra firma, who was given the name "Gaia" centuries ago, entire wildlife species are disappearing at alarming rates, while others, due to an increasingly imbalanced ecosystem, are multiplying and upsetting the balance of nature. All of this points to the idea that Gaia, Terra Firma, our Earth, is sick, and we are not doing enough to turn the tide. Sure, we are talking about moderating the use of fossil fuels, and, almost laughingly, criticizing the methane that goes into the air as a result of cow farts, but our efforts are not enough. There is a hole in the ozone layer of our atmosphere that is allowing harmful radiation through that would otherwise be blocked. All around the globe, and especially in Third World countries, clean water is becoming a scarce commodity. Interestingly, there are legends about a great civilization that supposedly once existed on the Earth. That civilization, located roughly in what is now the Atlantic Ocean, was known as Atlantis, and the great philosopher, Plato, spoke of its existence. There are also legends about a civilization that even predated Atlantis that existed in the Pacific Ocean known as Lemuria, or, depending upon who is telling the story, Mu. Both of these civilizations have allegedly vanished without a trace, though some modern explorers claim to have discovered artificial structures beneath the waters off the coast of Bimini, which they think may be remnants of Atlantis. And don't forget about the flood that is chronicled in legends all over the globe and is captured in the Bible. What's interesting about the foregoing is that it points to the possibility of whole societies disappearing without a trace. And whether we believe that these societies actually existed or not, it is instructive that something like that could happen to us if we're not careful. We need to step up our efforts to improve the situation here on Earth because this is the only home we know. We must all do our part, and we need to start Now! 4

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
This Time They Beat Up White Guys By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist Police brutality in Prince George’s County, Md. is legendary. There have been scandals after scandals for at least the last 50 years. Much of it has spread across the border into Washington, DC. It is bad and wide scale and it is also tinged with Black
Harry C. Alford and Hispanic inclusion. Most of the abuses are targeted to these two national minorities and for good reason. The applicable prosecutors and court sys-
tems protect and shield the dirty cops who perpetrate brutality. They will defend the actions of the cops no matter how heinous their actions are. So last week, when the actions of the Prince George’s Police Department during a recent basketball game on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, were splashed on television it was no surprise to my family circle. There they were smashing the heads of a few college students who were doing nothing but mildly celebrating the victory of their school. After the beatings they filed false police reports on the victims. This is so common to us. We know their M.O. (modus operandi) too well. We call it “Dirty Cops 101.” Tragically, it is supported by the judicial system and to the detriment of innocent citizens, usually young Black men. My sons and their close friends have matriculated through the University of Maryland and Georgetown University. They are good, productive Black males and are destined for great careers. However, there have been challenges with the local police de-
partments where their parents have had to get involved and save their futures through expensive legal representation against heinous criminal acts by policemen. Let me give you a few actual experiences of these students and what their parents had to go through to save them from the wicked, dirty cops. A few of the guys are walking down the streets of Georgetown (Washington, DC) one Saturday night. They are approached by DC cops (Precinct 2) and asked, “What are you boys doing in Georgetown?” One replied we happen to live here. After a few minutes the cops return and state, “Your guy is a smart a__ and now he must pay.” They handcuffed him; picked him up and body slammed him into their squad car; picked him up again and body slammed him to the ground. They arrested him and sent him to the lock up for the weekend and not arraigned until noon Monday. He had a busted lip, scars on his face and neck, a broken watch and money missing from his wallet. What were the charges? They formally claimed that he charged a parked car with his
head and caused $400 in property damage. They actually did this! The sad thing is his parents had to hire a top law firm and pay over $25,000 to convince the DC courts to throw the case out. There was no action done about the false police report or beat down. One Maryland student felt like having a hamburger. He sees an Athletic Department golf cart unattended. He jumps in and drives it to a fast food establishment. Gets his hamburger and heads back to campus. The cops were there waiting and arrested him. The formal charge is “Grand Theft Auto” – a serious felony. So began that family’s trauma. About $70,000 dollars in legal fees later the Prince George’s County State Attorney finally drops the case. Another one of the guys is walking with about 20 others leaving a UM bar and walking towards the dormitories. He is holding hands with a white girl and that sent off alarms with the PG cops. They arrest both of them; throw them in a paddy wagon and lock them up at the local “tank” until Monday. The formal charges were “Disturbing the Peace.” I
guess interracial hand holding is disturbing the peace for a racist. Here again, the parents had to hire proper legal representation in order to make this trumped up charge go away. The white girl had to go through therapy from this racist trauma and her folks spent big bucks also. One of the guys was walking down Rhode Island Avenue in College Park and was given a “Jay Walking” ticket. About a year later he found that it was entered as a moving vehicle violation and two points were on his record. He had to jump through hoops to get it removed so that his auto insurance rate wouldn’t sky rocket. All of the guys have at least one bad experience during their college days. Life isn’t easy for Black college males. The cops are predators looking for and stalking them. But this time they beat up white guys and the world now knows the deal. Hopefully, we can now remove all of these dirty cops. Harry Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. The Right Challenges Financial Services Reform Get ready for the next fight as the President and the Democratic controlled Congress attempt to try and fix the mess that nearly brought down the entire economic system that has placed millions of people out of their houses, jobs, savings and etc. Republicans met with banking association representatives recently about the Financial Services Bills working their way through the House and Senate and came away dedicated to defeating them any way they could. The pain caused by the economic crisis finds most Americans favoring the need for financial services reform, but Republicans have turned on their message machine to fight it. For example, a $50 billion fund was put in the Senate version to have banks pay for their own bailout if they fail, rather than the U.S. Treasury. You would think that is a good thing for those who faulted the government for bailing out the banks, but the Republicans have said that it insures future failures and bailouts because the money is there. They have also called
the effort of the government to regulate banks that are “too big to fail” extending “more government intervention into the private sector.” The lack of regulation by Republicans created the crisis in the first place, but they don’t seem to care if it happens again. It is interesting that the Tea Party folks who are supposed to be the ultimate fiscal conservatives are so mad at the government bank bailouts but they haven’t turned on the Republicans. This is partly because the latest CBS News, New York Times poll says that they are Republicans and that they hold the Congress responsible for the crisis rather than George Bush. Call it what it is, a convenient dodge. The same poll found that about 20 percent of Republicans belong to the Tea Party and that nearly all dislike President Obama, many thinking that he is a Socialist, not born in this Country, and that he is building a big government, getting away from their idea of what America has been – and they want it back. They also feel that too much attention has been given to problems facing Blacks and that Obama’s policies have favored Blacks

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
By Ron Walters NNPA Columnist
Ron Walters over whites. However, they must have been under a rock somewhere and couldn’t hear the complaint of Blacks who say that, in fact, he has not paid much attention to them and their needs. So, one wonders where these beliefs are coming from since, facts are not important. These beliefs seems to be coming from a group that is largely over 45 years old, steeped in the values of privileged traditional white dominant race-relations in the past, carrying the large weight of a Southern resentment toward Blacks. This was hinted at by Governor Haley Barbour who was interviewed about Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell’s
proclamation of Confederate History Month that left out slavery. Barbour’s view was that this wasn’t very important. This signals that these beliefs are coming from key leaders of the Republican party, helping to embolden and legitimize the race-haters. The fact is that just like the Health Care fight, the attitudes of the Right have little to do with the fine points of legislation they oppose, rather what they oppose is a government run by a Black man. So, the fight takes place in coded massages like “smaller government.” Well, The Wall Street Journal considers the extension of unemployment insurance to be “welfare” and Tea Partiers think it means the same thing as the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children they think still exists. The ignorance of this crowd makes it dangerous. So, the fight over financial services will liven up but don’t forget that there is a Consumer Protection Agency in the new Bills that would protect Americans from unfair and deceptive practices from financial products. It would create a consumer hot-line and monitor rates that banks could charge on mortgage loans and credit cards, ending secret fees Saturday, April 24, 2010
charged by financial institutions and etc. This is a reason to keep one’s eye on the ball and not be sucked into the trap laid by the arguments that will go on over other aspects of financial regulation. Just like the Health Care fight, Republicans want Democrats to scrap the existing legislation and “start over” in order to achieve a “bi-partisan bill.” But they have no intention of the sort; they want to kill financial regulations, deprive the administration of another win and nationalize the fall campaign. Already, we are hearing that they will create a new “Contract on America” similar to that Newt Gingrich and company used in the Republican revolution of 1994. This time, however, if enough people really understand that they could care less about resolving their problems, it may not work. Though many have died in the last few years, especially when there was death of the innocent by the morbid, these people know who they are and have no remorse with the taking of innocent bystanders in the wild, wild west of Chicago. The police department is undermanned and seen in the course of the slow legislation and the inability to confront the Mayor, who has outlived his usefulness in this metropolitan city of the twenty-first century. We must realize that the pouring of new blood that is leading the freshness of the day by the dawn’s early and evening’s late. Recently a young man who was shot in the chest by a person who he knew refused to tell the police who it was that killed him. Robert Tate, 17-years-old went to his grave holding to his grave. We are living in the killing fields of Chicago. The Mayor is responsible for each and every death of the children. This bloodshed is filing up the disdain of the press and the citizens who press the City Council to put more police officers on the force to combat the lawlessness of the wayward ways of the killers. This mayor has shown his lackadaisical mannerisms and his failure to bring forth to the City Council any and all programs and grievous needs, yet he continues to lead the citizens into constant sorrow. He has shown that his administration has come to a sudden end . . . but it’s just that Chicagoans are unwilling to step up to this dinosaur that has long been dead, yet not buried. Though the body of Chicago and its Mayor that is named Daley, has already been plotted in the same hardened soil that this city been subjected. Daley seems to have picked a favorite pol to absorb his field of dreams realized. Lesser politicians really have to be put on the ballot and let the people who live here, the citizens of Chicago, choose who should be their representative. Let’s start voting in tandem at the ballot box. We are not anxious to push Daley out of office, as we do know that he will come to what God so WILLS to happen here in Chicago. The young Daley showed his hand that he is not of good character. No one has forgotten what he did in Michigan. I am not against any man, but against his actions. Richard J.
and historical understanding of the past as it relates to the present and future in preparation for working for self and the liberation of African people. This is the challenge of the twenty-first-century to defeat the one hundred year tradition established by white educational leaders who created curriculums for Africans in America designed to prepare them to work for white folks. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who founded in February of 1926, what at the time was called “Negro History Week,” would indeed be inspired by the ongoing discussion and debate over the contributions of African people to the history of the world. The movement led by Dr. Woodson helped lay the founda-
tion for the current African Centered Education Movement that has become the catalyst for the intense study of Africa and the history of African people throughout the world 365 days a year. We should all read or reread Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers’ profound book, Intellectual Warfare. African American History Month is a very important, continuing effort, for us, as African people in America to educate and reeducate ourselves about our history and its relationship to the important ideas that shape how we see the world. We must continue this effort beyond African American History Month and carry it into the rest of the year. For over thirty-five-years, Dr. Carruthers played a leading role as a scholar and intellectual activist in the development of the African Centered Education Movement. Dr. Carruthers was a tenured professor in the College of Education’s Inner City Studies Education undergraduate and graduate programs at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, Illinois and retired as Professor Emeritus. Along with Dr. Anderson Thompson, Dr. Carruthers helped shape both the undergraduate and graduate curricula that have become known throughout the country for providing a theoretical and practical understanding of the impact of the political, economic, social, and cultural forces on people who live in the inner cities throughout the world. Of course, one of the largest groups to live in the inner cities is African people. Therefore, a great deal of Dr. Carruthers’ writings and lectures concentrated on the white supremacy intellectual assault on African people and the world. Dr. Carruthers has been magnificent in exposing the European intellectual tyranny and its impact on the education of African people. It was through his association with the late, great Senegalese scholar, Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop and the late, great scholar/teacher, Dr. John Henrik Clarke that helped propel the genius of Dr. Carruthers’ insight into the “Deep Well” of the African Worldview. As the founding President of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations
(ASCAC), Dr. Carruthers helped shape an organizational format for African Centered scholars, teachers, students, and the overall African Community to have a collective vehicle in which to pursue the building of the African Centered Education Movement. His leadership, in this regard, has been monumental and inspiring to hundreds of scholars, teachers, and students throughout the African World Community. In this connection, Dr. Carruthers’ book, Intellectual Warfare, prepares us to function in the twenty-first-century with a sharper understanding of our challenges as an African people. The book is organized into five sections. Part I: The Nature of the War; Part II: Defenders of Western Civilization; Part III: Intellectual Civil War; Part IV: The Champions of African Centered Thought; and Part V: Toward the Restoration of African Civilizations. In the preface of Intellectual Warfare, Dr. Carruthers explains, “These essays reflect the thought of the ‘Chicago group’ and the ‘African Community of Chicago.’ I was simply a vehicle through whom ideas flowed. Even the mistakes are our mistakes rather than mine alone. The conceptualization of our work as Intellectual Warfare emerged out of the actual battles in which we were engaged.” In the first chapter, Dr. Carruthers instructs us by pointing out, “Thus, those who have been waging the long war to liberate African history and culture have been fighting the following two battles: (1) an international war against the European intellectuals and (2) a civil war against the colonized African spokespersons who are trained by Europeans to undermine African independence. The war is truly, as Anderson Thompson says, a battle for the African mind, or as Asa Hilliard and the First World Alliance put it, a battle to free the African mind.” Those who believe in the just cause of the long war to liberate African history and culture must read and reread and study Dr. Carruthers’ most insightful observations, wisdom, and his “Deep Well” of understanding that is shared in Intellectual Warfare.

Chicago has had two or three Mayors since King Richard J. Black people and the background pulling the strings of promise that has left us all open to a city that has had riots that were so long that the whole world saw it . . . just like in Selma, Alabama when the march for equality and the President of the United States had to federalize the National Guard to get Blacks the right to live under the same rights as other Americans who fought and died. It was President Johnson who promised that he would not accept his party’s nomination for a second term. Johnson was the man from Texas who was Kennedy’s running mate. Johnson had bit off more than he could stand, but at least he saw a way out of the civil rights mess that had gone on for far too long in this country. Americans must realize that God will take away what he has given to this country, but he has watched to see if America will show her true colors and CREED.

SHE’S GONE Well Chicago Public Schools won’t have Barbara Eason Watkins to kick around any more. It seems the hot shot edu-
cator has taken a job as the czar of the Michigan school system. What is interesting is her departure proceeds a string of similar actions by three or four career educators who claim they have had enough with DUH Mayor’s bizarre plan for urban education. However, look for the city’s $40 million investment in public relations support to clean up the matter and make it look like these folk have simply retired or wanted to pursue other opportunities in the “private sector.” But do not be the fool—-they are leaving in protest of the way these chillums is being treated by this current was administration—-which brought in to usher in the utter demise and destruction of public (free) education as you know it. In the meantime, what will Barb do about the city of Detroit, whose public school systems look like a bunch of scrambled eggs? Her first move—-to call on the other white man who under minded her career—Arne Duncan.

series of protests coming from a bunch of men of God. Now that the snow has melted and the grant money has been doled out, look for the protest ministers to take to the streets once again to denounce everything from violence, to school funding, to police brutality to Hard Times not having enough chicken wings on Sunday afternoon. They have become so routine that the city, state, county and everybody else have incorporated their protest into their ongoing plans. Already one ugly, baldheaded, pink lipped preacher who is fond of wearing Easter suits, has been on Ima’s television set denouncing how the city is responding to the spate of violence. What is very bizarre is this same preacher is actually on the payroll of DUH Mayor and is known to jump very high whenever Mister Daley snaps his two fingers. Therefore when you see him on your TV set know that he is tricking you. He’s part of a group of co-opted preachers who will “get in front” of the real protestors to draw out all the fire. Their job is to pretend to be outraged, whereby the city responds inkind, and whereby they then publicly accept the city’s response and says DUH Mayor is doing a good job. Do

Extended Coverage Insurance is essentially a promise by an insurer to provide the funds needed to cover future losses, in return for a promise to pay a monthly premium. Insurers are required by law to hold sufficient assets and the financial means to cover all insured losses. Insured individuals must pay the premiums stipulated by the terms and conditions of the policy to be eligible for compensation in the event of a loss. Premiums can usually be reduced, however, if the insured agrees to pay a deductible amount, which is a nominal percentage of the loss. No one should doubt the necessity of insurance, though sometimes guidance and advice is needed to decide what exactly should be covered.

The reality is that a serious mishap or illness can radically change a person's life, causing loss of income and the inability to pay one's bills. Sudden death can result in serious hardship for a family left behind, even to the point of leaving a spouse and children without a home. Fortunately, such worries can be avoided by buying insurance policies

BUSINESS Consumer Credit Scores: The Industry Standard of Measuring Credit Worthiness By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist As the deadline draws near to take final advantage of one-time, federal home buying tax credit, many consumers who yearn to make the transition from renters to homeowners will seriously consider whether the time is right to ‘make that move.’ With a large inventory of homes in most markets, coupled with comparatively low home prices and mortgage interest rates, many may find the opportunity for an $8,000 tax credit tempting. While those factors hold true for most of the nation, another key factor will figure prominently into whether a mortgage lender will finance a home purchase: credit scores. Due to the stillevolving financial crisis, many lenders are only writing loans for consumers with ‘good’ credit scores. So for those intending to file a mortgage application, it would be wise to understand what is taken into account in reaching credit scores and how individual scores rank on the competitive market. Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) scores range from 300-850 and
measure how well consumer credit has historically been handled. In general, higher scores lead to better credit terms. In the case of mortgage lending, the direct benefit could be a lower interest rate over the life of the loan. On a 30-year, $300,000 mortgage, a difference of 100 points could mean either saving or paying $40,000 in interest over the life of the loan. Consumers with scores of 700 or most often qualify for lower mortgage rates. As a result, it is important for consumers to be aware as to how scores are calculated. Several factors comprise the scoring process and include payment history, debt amounts, length of credit history, new credit and credit mix. However, two of these measures, payment history and debt, account for 65 percent of a FICO score. Payment history is weighed the heaviest and accounts for 35 percent of the final FICO score. Long-term consumer history on payments for credit cards, installment loans such as auto and student loans are considered in this specific measurement. The larger the loan, the more important it is to have a history that demon-
Early
put the
Charlene Crowell strates regular and timely payments. The importance of payment history cannot be overstated. Among the largest banks, 90 percent use FICO scores to make decisions. For example, if a consumer had a FICO score of 680 and then missed a monthly debt payment, that one failure could lower their score by 60-80 points. Consumers’ current total debt comprises another 30 percent of FICO scores. The difference be-
tween credit limits and how much is obligated determines how well this portion of the score is reached. Consumers who have utilized all of their credit limits will be considered more risky than those who maintain low balances. Utilizing only 30 percent of a given credit limit is usually considered the best way to score well on debt. The length of credit history accounts for another 15 percent of credit scores. This factor typically works against young consumers. Instead of having bad credit history, many young people simply have none. The remedy to that lack is to create a history of responsibly handling a manageable but small credit accounts or installment payments. By creating a short credit history of this kind, young consumers are more likely to gain the ability to purchase an automobile without a co-signer. In turn, if the installment loan shows a pattern of regular payments, the likelihood of being able to secure financing to purchase a home will improve. The last two factors, new credit and credit mix, respectively represent 10 percent of the total score. Having too many open lines of credit can hurt more than having
none. For example if a retail clerk offers a discount on a purchase for opening a new credit account, thoughtfully consider how much credit is already been obligated. The 10 or 15 percent reduction on a purchase may not be worth opening a new account. The current tightening of credit has also led to a number of misleading offers for free credit score reports. In many instances, these ‘free’ services often wind up as long-term, monthly subscription programs and penalty fees if consumers cancel before conclusion of a trial period. As of April 2, a new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rule requires such firms to fully disclose their real terms. A better approach would be to visit the government-mandated site, www.annualcreditreport.com where each year consumers can receive a free credit report. For communities of color, access to credit has been historically problematic – especially in the area of mortgage lending. So if the 2010 first-time homeowner tax credit is the motivator to purchase your own American dream, assess your financial forecast be(Continued on page 16)

HEROES IN THE HOOD Heroes in the ‘Hood Ceremony honors youths who positively impact the community As acts of violence continue to make headlines, 150 very special Chicago teens – including a group of students in the crimeplagued neighborhood of North Lawndale – have been recognized for their roles in building their community in a positive way. The young people were honored as part of the 17th annual Heroes in the ‘Hood award program, held April 15 at the DuSable Museum of African American History. The initiative pays tribute to individuals and groups of teenagers who give back in various ways to help support and improve their neighborhoods. “Since the start of this program, we’ve been privileged to get to know more than 5,000 Chicago teens – teens who don’t make headlines and teens who are never seen on television,” says John McCarthy, president of GO Airport Express and founder of the Heroes in the ‘Hood program. “These young adults make their communities better places to live.”
Three Honored Role Models were also recognized at the ceremony: Rev. Willie T. Barrow, civil rights activist, chairman emeritus Rainbow/PUSH Coalition; Roberto Garza, Chicago Bears’ offensive lineman; and Kimberly McCullough, director of external affairs for AT&T Illinois. First place in the group category went to 15 students, members of the Learning to Rise Program at North Lawndale College Prep Charter High School. These students promote a culture of peace at their school through peer mediation, peer juries, and other non-violent conflict resolution and restorative justice practices. Learning to Rise also aims to continually train students in non-violent conflict resolution techniques so the entire community can embrace a peaceful spirit. These students have set a schoolwide goal to have 153 accrued days of peace by the end of the school year, and are well on their way to achieving that goal. Second place in the group cate-

UUH OH!: MEMO TO: Kitty Kelley: Girlfriend, be careful! Watch your back because I heard Oprah is going to work a root on you! I have just finished reading, Oprah: A Biography by Kitty Kelley (Crown Publishers; $30.00) and let me say, I now know more about Oprah Winfrey than I have EVER wanted or Oprah Windrey needed to know!.....and in all fairness, Kitty Kelley backs up EVERYTHING she says in all 524 pages of the book. For the past twenty-five years, no one has been better at revealing secrets than Oprah Winfrey. On what is arguably the most influential show in television history ( although I can't stand to watch it), she has gotten her guests--often the biggest celebrities in the world-to bare their love lives, explore their painful pasts, admit their transgressions, reveal their pleasures and explore their demons. In turn, Oprah has repeatedly allowed her audience to share in her own life story, opening up about the sexual abuse in her past (again and again and AGAIN) and discussing her romantic relationships, her weight problems (again, and again and AGAIN), her spiritual beliefs, her charitable donations (again and again and AGAIN), and her strongly held views on the state of the world. After a quarter of a century of the Oprah-ization of America, can there be any more secrets left to reveal? Yes! Because Oprah has met her match. Kitty Kelley has, over the same period of time, fearlessly and relentlessly investigated and written about the world's most revered icons: Frank Sinatra, Nancy Reagan, England's Royal Family, and the Bush dynasty. In her #1 best selling biographies, she has exposed truths and exploded myths to uncover the real human beings that exist behind their manufactured facades. Turning her reportorial sights on Oprah, Kelley has now given us an unvarnished look at the stories Oprah has told and the life she has led. Kelley has talked to Oprah's closet family members and business associates. She has obtained court records, birth certificates, financial and tax records, and even copies of Oprah's legendary (and punishing) confidentiality agreements. She has probed every aspect of Oprah Winfrey's life, and it is as if she's written the most extraordinary segment of The Oprah Winfrey Show ever filmed---one in which Oprah herself is finally and fully revealed. There is a case to be made, and it is certainly made in this book, that Oprah Winfrey is an important, and even great, figure of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. But there is also a case to be made that even greatness needs to be examined and put under a microscope. Fact must be separated from myth, truth from hype. Kitty Kelley has made that separation, showing both sides of Oprah as they have never been shown before. In doing so she has written a psychologically perceptive and meticulously researched book that will surprise and thrill everyone who reads it. 12

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ
Death at a Funeral Death at a Funeral, starring Tracy Morgan, Loretta Divine, Chris Rock, Ron Glass, Zoe Saldana and a host of other comedians and actors, was so darn funny that it didn’t matter that it was an exact remake of the British version of a devoted father’s funeral that opens itself up to a bold surprise! The story goes that a patriarch dies and the funeral is held at his home, where he lived with his grieving widow and oldest son and his wife. The younger son, played by Martin Lawrence, is an accomplished writer, and the oldest son, played by Chris Rock, works in finance but always had aspirations to become a writer. There’s a bit of sibling rivalry going on, but that is thrown to the wind when it is discovered that their late father was on the “down low” and had a lover who was small in size. He is also Caucasian, and the deceased man is Black, so I don’t know what was the biggest grievance, the lover’s gender, size or ethnicity. Rock plays Aaron and Martin plays Ryan, and as the family members gather at the spacious home for the funeral, the two are on edge, because the funeral home at first delivers the wrong body. Along the way, Columbus Short, who plays the cousin of the two brothers, Jeff, and his sister, Elaine, played by Saldana, manage to allow Elaine’s boyfriend to take a Valium that’s not really a Valium. Short is a premed student and he’s mixed up a concoction of hallucinogens for a buddy and placed them in the Valium bottle. James Marsden who plays Oscar is so spaced out during the funeral that he ends up on the roof, naked (just like in the original version) and Elaine is hard pressed to explain his behavior to her father, who doesn’t really care for Oscar. Peter Dinklage plays Frank, the father’s undercover lover, and he has a blackmail scheme of his own to carry out. This is the same role that Dinklage played in the British version. The Valium bottle plays an integral part in the movie, also, as it keeps getting misplaced and mistaken for just what it is—Valium, when it’s really something more potent. The persnickety Uncle Russell, played by Danny Glover manages to give family friend Norman, played by Morgan, a run for his money, and also just the “runs,” when Glover ends up needing as-

Alderman Howard Brookins (20th) has been trying unsuccessfully for years to bring a Wal-Mart into his area, but has never had enough votes in the city council. Brookins wants a Wal-Mart for

So basically I think the city is discriminating against those who don’t have cars by preventing Wal-Mart to come,” Robinson said. “I also think the jobs could help some of these young people like my 19-year-old grandson start to do something positive with their lives. We all need to start somewhere and I see a job at Wal-Mart being a starting job, not a career one.” The Crusader will continue to follow this story as it develops.
