2,700 teachers at mercy of CPS boss By J. Coyden Palmer After an emergency meeting of the Chicago Board of Education on Tuesday (June15), board members voted to give school’s CEO Ron Huberman the authority to layoff 2,700 teachers and increase class sizes to 35 students. The board and Huberman contend the measures will be necessary for next school year to balance the budget. They say the actions can be

“I think what happened today is shameful and it will hurt CPS students in the long-run,” said CTU President-elect Karen Lewis. “People losing their jobs and those fortunate to keep them will have to deal with increased class sizes are not the

way our profession should be going.” Sharing in Lewis’ sentiments was the woman she defeated in an election just days before, current CTU President Marilyn Stewart. She is fighting against the move by filing a lawsuit, claiming that an

increase in class size would be illegal because it would violate the law as it relates to the amount of square footage in a classroom per pupil. So disappointed in the board’s decision Stewart called it “educa(Continued on page 2)

Grants available for student-led school dropout prevention programs By La Risa Lynch The deadline is fast approaching for Chicago area high school students to receive between $500 and $1,500 in grants on how they would prevent students from dropping out of high school. The United Way of Metropolitan Chicago has partnered with AT&T and America’s Promise Alliance to provide the grants. The My Idea Grant program empowers young people to examine Chicago’s high school drop-out crisis and devise action plans to keep their peers in school and on track to graduate. The United Way received a $25,000 grant to implement the program. Students must work in conjunction

with a community group or a school to implement their ideas. Students’ ideas must be submitted by June 23. Applications can be found at . According to a 2008 study by America’s Promise Alliance only about half of all students nationwide graduate. Chicago has a 51.5 percent graduation rate with Black males making up a disproportionate number of high school dropout rates. The program’s goal is to get youths’ ideas on how they would reduce the dropout rate, United Way’s Lorrie Lynn said. Adults, Lynn added, usually are the ones with all the statistics, research and indicators identifying dropout crisis, but “it is important to see life from the perspective of the kids.”

While Lynn noted efforts to address the dropout crisis have been adult-lead, placing that task in youths hands may result in some out of the box solutions and programs that may actually work. “These could be promising practices

that nobody has ever thought of because we are seeing it from the perspective of an outsider (looking) in. Whereas when you are a kid in school, it’s a perspective from the inside out,” she said, adding that (Continued on page 3)

Burge trial continues as prosecutors rest case By J. Coyden Palmer In the minds of many African Americans, the trial of a former Chicago Police officer accused of torturing suspects and lying about it, has finally begun. Jon Burge, a retired police commander, allegedly tortured suspects into giving false confessions and then lied about it to investigators. Federal prosecutors believe Burge tortured dozens of people but can’t charge him because of the statue of limitations. On the last day of presenting their case, prosecutors called to the stand Shadeed Mu’min. He testified that Burge tortured him during an investigation into an armed robbery. Mu’min said Burge first threatened him by pulling the trigger on a revolver three times. The game of Russian roulette scared Mu’min but he wouldn’t confess to the crime, he said. When that didn’t work, Burge got a plastic bag from a typewriter and suffocated him until he fell unconscious. After that Mu’min said he confessed. The incident happened in 1985 Mu’min said, who is now 66 and has a lengthy criminal record. Mu’min was subjected to a tough cross-examination by Burge attorney Rick Beuke, who dwelt on the senior citi-

zen’s criminal record. He also hammered Mu’min on the fact that he’d lied when he previously denied committing the crime he confessed to at Area 2. He also questioned why he didn’t tell attorneys representing him at the time that he’d been abused. Mu’min demonstrated to the court how Burge placed the plastic over his face constricting his airway. He also said other officer’s, including African American detectives witnessed what was taking place. “I became afraid that I was going to die,” Mu’min told the court. “I told him, ‘Just don’t do it anymore,’ that I’d tell him what he wanted to know.” Five victims testifed they were tortured by Burge. In addition to suffocation, they testified they were burned by a hot radiator and some were shocked with some sort of homemade electrical shock device. Cook County Commissioner Larry Sufferdin testified earlier in the trial that when he was working as a public defender, one of his clients told him a hood was placed over his head and he was eltrocuted until he signed a murder confession. His client, Anthony Holmes, said he was beat up and the Illinois Appelate Court thew out his conviction. But the state Supreme Court reinstated it,

and Mr. Holmes went to prison where he served 10 years of a 20-to 75-year sentence. Gregory Banks, another person who said he was coerced into siging a confession, testified that he was struck several times with a flashlight by detectives under Burge’s command. He said they also kicked him repeatedly and put a gun in his mouth. Banks’ confession was thrown out by the Illinois Appelate Court. Burge’s defense has called several former detectives and prosectors who claim at no time where there any visible signs that suspects were being tortured. They say claims of suspects that they were screaming in pain are unfounded.

Senator Roland Burris Announces Department of Labor Funding for Training and Career Opportunities for Women United States Senator Roland W. Burris today announced that $300,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Labor will be directed to Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT) to support training and career opportunities for women in nontraditional fields such as construction and manufacturing. Through partnerships with nine Registered Apprenticeship programs for carpentry, laborers, iron workers, bricklayers, electri-

cians, pipefitters, plumbers, sheet metal workers, painters and drywall finishers, CWIT will use this funding to advance outreach, training, placement and retention of women in construction apprenticeship programs and other non-traditional occupations. The partnerships are built around CWIT’s Technical Opportunities Program (TOP), an established 185 hour pre-apprenticeship program. Additionally, the project will ex-

pand upon CWIT’s partnership with the Pipe Fitters’ Local #597, which prepares women to meet the Local’s projected shortage of welders. CWIT estimates that approximately 1,500 women will participate in career education activities. Approximately 120 participants will enter CWIT’s “TOP” program, 100 participants will be placed into registered apprenticeships or other nontraditional occupations.

pay raise for teachers next year. That issue was part of a deal signed off on five years ago. Board member Norm Bobins said it is only right to honor the pay increase, but he hopes teachers will agree to some concessions on the issue by realizing what would be at stake if the board must do a salary increase. Board president Mary RichardsonLowry says the looming budget deficit requires tough decision making. “My mother was a teacher,” she said. “There are a lot of good teachers out there. That’s not what this is about today. We have a financial crisis.” Huberman said just because the Board has given him the authority to raise class sizes and layoff employees does not mean he is going to do it. The Board also agreed to grant Huberman the authority to take out an $800 million line of credit to help plug a deficit of some $430 million. Huberman said the measures will be in place in case he needs to reSaturday, June 19, 2010

CTU President Marilyn Stewart spond. But he and Mayor Daley are hopeful that lawmakers and Governor Quinn in Springfield can come up with a solution to educational funding in the state. “I want people to understand that this wasn’t our first and only plan to deal with this problem,” said Huberman, speaking of the layoffs and class size increases. “We have gone over everything and this is the only thing we see left. If the union wants to make

some concessions it would be helpful but they aren’t required to do so.” Lewis did not believe Huberman. She said there are several other areas where cuts could be made. She said expensive, unproven curriculum, outside vendors and consultants along with expensive testing procedures are all areas that should have been on the chopping blocks before looking at the classroom. Parents too are not happy with the increase in class size. They say students have a hard enough time focusing as it is and that adding more students to the mix will make it more challenging. “We’re basically turning our classrooms into baby sitting factories,” said parent Denise Wilkins, whose daughter attends Scott Joplin on the South Side. “I feel for these teachers. They have to deal with many kids who don’t come from the best of homes and have little discipline. I wonder how effective they can be at teaching with that many

students.” Wilkins said she fears that her daughter’s grades will be affected. She said more students mean less individual attention per student and that many children need the extra help. Not able to afford a private school, Wilkins said parents will have to assist schools more. “I know a lot of parents are unemployed and this would be a good time to do volunteer work,” Wilkins said. “Parents will have to be more involved in their kid’s education and we must support the teachers however we can.” During an interview with the Crusader last week, CTU president-elect Lewis said building a partnership with parents will be essential in education. Because there are so many challenges being faced by school districts across the state, Lewis said teachers must see parents as an ally. She advised parents that going over daily’s lessons with their children at home will increase their learning ability and the parents will see where the student needs extra help. NEWS Cook County Offers Low Cost Rabies Vaccines Beginning in the summer of 2006, the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control has conducted summer clinics that provide low-cost rabies vaccines and microchips. This summer is no different. Cook County Animal and Rabies Control began their 2010 Summer Clinics on June 1st and are now in full swing. These clinics allow affordable rabies vaccinations to bring all citizens into compliance with the law while providing an essential public health protection against a deadly disease that has caused public health concerns in four states over the past two years. Dr. Donna M. Alexander, the Administrator for Cook County

Animal and Rabies Control states, “Rabies is a disease that has not been eradicated. The numbers of bats that test positive for rabies are rising and a major concern for our department. Often we find cats bringing killed bats to their owners only to have the bat test positive for rabies. We talk to the cat owner and find out that their cat is not current for rabies vaccinations because they are under the misconception that indoor cats don’t require rabies vaccines. Let me assure you that it is the law; all dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated for rabies and must be current at all times. This is a law to not only protect the health of the general public but also to protect you and your family’s health.” Most dog owners are aware that rabies vaccines are required but some pet owners are going through some troubling financial times. Cook County’s Low Cost Rabies and Microchip Clinics not only make the vaccines affordable but also accessible. The clinics will be held in 34 different locations throughout the County from June through September. The dates and locations can be found at the Animal and Rabies Control website at www.cookcountygov.com

ject, that is pretty impressive over a few months,” she said.

“This would be a great opportunity for them to tell us what can be done,” Lynn added.

Another goal of the program, Lynn noted, is to get youth more engaged in the dropout crisis and increase their understanding of the importance of school and graduation.

Youth must work with a sponsoring organization, like a nonprofit, or a school to implement their grant idea. The funds will be allocated to the sponsoring organization. Students cannot directly receive the funding. The grant application is open to high school students and students transitioning from grammar school to high school. Projects must be implemented from September to December for the 2010-2011school year. However, Lynn noted that implementing the projects falls in students’ hands.

She added the skills students learn from this project will be invaluable. She said the students would learn how to create a program, apply for a grant, manage a budget and see their idea into fruition.

and at most Jewel-Osco stores. Rabies vaccines will cost $7 for a one year and $21 for a three year. Ferrets may only be vaccinated for one year and the cost of the vaccine is $9. Pet owners can have their pets microchipped for $10; however, this does not include the national registration. President Stroger urged residents to take advantage of the County’s clinic services, “The microchip option facilitates the reunion of lost pets with their owners, and it shows that we’re giving people affordable access to cutting edge technology.

USDA’s Farm Service Agency County Committee nominations now open WASHINGTON — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced that farmer and rancher candidate nominations has begun for local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees. The nomination period continues through Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, with the election taking place between Friday, Nov. 5, and the close of business on Monday, Dec. 6. “I encourage all producers to participate in the nomination of county committee candidates by the August 2 deadline,” said Vilsack. “We would like as much participation as possible since county committees provide a vital link and a voice for landowners, farmers and ranchers to have opinions and ideas heard at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With better participation in recent years, we also have seen a trend of increased nominations of minority and women producers that we hope will continue.” To be eligible to serve on a Farm Service Agency county committee a person must participate or coop-

EDITORIAL Defending Congresswoman Maxine Waters’ bill to include minorities and women in banking reform - Guest Editorial NNPA Chairman responds to Wall Street Journal Editorial By Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. Let’s start at the beginning: the Federal Reserve system was started in secrecy by the most powerful and influential financiers in America almost a century ago, allegedly in response to a growing need for an organized central banking system. The Federal Reserve Bank was created by the 1913 Federal Reserve Act. This, in essence, put the nation’s monetary supply in the hands of an exclusive, private, secretive organization of rich, White men that has operated independently of the American government since that time. There are 12 regional banks in the Federal Reserve System, and these banks have been able to operate outside of government control for the past 97 years. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending upon your viewpoint or your ethnic origin. The Wall Street Journal, in a recent op-ed piece entitled “Politicizing the Fed,” Representative Maxine Waters (Dem-CA) and her democratic cohorts are criticized and accused of seeking “...the political allocation of credit” because of a proposal to place more accountability on the Feds. The issue that is drawing the most steam is connected with Subtitle I, Section 1801 of the House financial reform bill titled “Inclusion of Minorities and Women; Diversity in Agency Workforce.” In essence, according to the article, this would call for “each federal financial agency, the Fed Board of Governors and the 12 regional Fed banks to establish an Office of Minority and Women Inclusion.” In other words, Maxine Waters is calling for inclusion. What a crazy idea! The op-ed opines that the Feds already dictate racial and gender hiring through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and other assorted federal laws, which makes the Waters provision “redundant.” Redundant? If we didn’t need these provisions, where are all of the minorities and women with the Feds now? One needs but a cursory view of American history to know that inclusion has not been one of America’s strongest points when it comes to money and power. If that were not the case, Affirmative Action, seen by proponents as a step to ensure inclusion of minorities and women, would not have been fought tooth and nail at every turn. The fact of the matter is that America does not have a level playing field which would allow those who are not White and male an equal opportunity to participate on a meaningful level in the halls of financial power. And even though we have elected a Black president, it didn’t level the playing field. It is interesting to note that those who hold the opinion that the bill will unnecessarily place too much power in the hands of the Congress and White House did not complain when the American banking system was placed lock, stock and barrel in the hands of several very powerful white financiers 97 years ago. This is the very opposite of diversity, and the situation remains the same today. The Feds have not only operated independently of the government, they have been out of control and reckless, harming a lot of people in the process, which is the very reason that Congress has proposed legislation to bring it under control. The most disturbing aspect of the Wall Street Journal’s stance, however, is the notion that mandating the inclusion of minorities and women is tantamount to automatically dumbing down the system. This can be inferred by the statement “Congress will now order regulators to allocate credit by race and gender. Isn’t the point of this financial reform supposed to be to make regulators better judges of systemic risks, which means focusing on financial safety and soundness?” One would be led to believe by this these words that “inclusion” and “quality” are mutually exclusive. They aren’t. It is for this reason, among others, that somebody needs to keep an eye on the old boys club that has had a monopoly on financial policy for almost a century. The Fed’s 100th birthday is right around the corner, and this is a fitting time to re-think the Federal Reserve system. Maxine Water’s proposal is a good place to start, and NNPA’s 200 plus Black publishers applaud and support her and her colleagues for this effort! 4

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Let’s Fix Haiti Once and for All By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist In the beginning of this nation, Haiti was certainly a good neighbor. It was Haitian troops that came to the Carolinas and whipped British troops during the American Revolution under the guidance of our French ally. This experience gave Haitian slaves the advantage of fight-

Harry C. Alford ing in traditional military fashion against French colonialists and won their freedom. They whipped the Napoleon Army so bad that France was on the verge of bankruptcy and total annihilation by their British en-

emy. To save themselves France sold us a majority portion of the now United States for pennies on the dollar (Louisiana Purchase). Yes, we owe Haiti. Unfortunately, we have shown little appreciation. My generation has witnessed Haiti in a multi-decades long downward spiral. There have been the dirty Papa Doc regime; the dirty Baby Doc regime; the dirty Aristide regime and dirty everyone else who supposedly had the trust of the people. The United States has sent troops there on various occasions but it was not to strengthened or liberate the people. It has been to support the “dictator” of the moment and to promote the further exploitation of the people of Haiti and to allow the excessive flow of corruption to drain the economy. Haiti is an economic basket case and the United States should feel obligated to help our neighbor and get the nation on its feet for the first time ever. The devastating earthquake this year has afforded us an opportunity to restart the nation and put it on a path of commerce, liberty and quality of life. First of all, let’s end slavery on this island nation. How ironic that the

nation that was formed through a rebellion against slavery maintains a practice of child slavery. The Restavek system of allowing parents to sell their children to strangers for about a week’s worth of groceries is a vile, insidious tradition that can no longer be allowed. It causes immense poverty, exploitation and hopelessness. Children should be nurtured and loved and considered a national resource, not property. This child slavery system must be outlawed replete with stiff penalties for any violations. Now, we can take these children and educate them in a free, public education system. Make them literate and trained in skills for the future. This will give them a chance to survive and, in fact, thrive under a democratic, free enterprise system. The nation can soon have a workforce that can supply human capital for business development. A viable working class can replace the massive poverty that currently exists. Stop the massive tax evasion that the Bourgeoisie class has become used to. Instead of supplying the national treasury with its due income tax, they simply send it to France for hiding. The result is that the govern-

ment is in a perpetual state of bankruptcy. Hold the middle and upper class accountable to the national treasury and let the government become economically stable. Corruption is a crime. Those who practice it should be prosecuted severely. For those of us who could become potential investors for the rebuilding of the nation please hold firm to our principles. As one African Prime Minister once told me about the subject of corruption, “Don’t pay a bribe and there will be no bribery”. As we help in the rebuilding do not participate in corruption and press on in spite of it. Report it as it appears before you but don’t let it change your mind about participating in the future of our neighbor Haiti. Don’t assume that the U.N., the U.S. State Department and former President Bill Clinton are going to do the right thing and allow people of the Black Diaspora to participate in the rebuilding of Haiti. We must become vigilant as history tells us we will get snookered if we trust without verifying. This is a fine opportunity for people of Haitian descent who have become entrepreneurs elsewhere to return home and apply

their skills to this important task that lies ahead. The rebuilding of Haiti by Haitians should be paramount. Those of Haitian descent living in Miami, D.C., New York, Boston and other enclaves should prepare to get involved. You should have priority to the contracts that will apply to the rebuilding. Furthermore, Haiti should use the Bahamas Model. Preference should be given to Haitian owned businesses in this rebuilding. Partnerships with Haitian and African Americans should be allowed. The money generated from these contracts should stay in Haiti and be taxed by the Haitian government. All, I mean ALL jobs, should be offered first to Haitians with the first right of refusal. It is noble for the world to come to the aid of Haiti but there must be a strategy that will empower the people of Haiti during and afterwards. For the first time in history, we have a chance to make Haiti independent, self sustaining and free. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc ®. Bring the Power Back to the People By Danny Bakewell, Sr. NNPA Chairman Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle have sent a clear message to the five Commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission regarding new internet regulations: bring the power back to the people. Recently Congressmen Gene Green and 73 House Democratic colleagues, including a number of members of the Congressional Black Caucus, sent a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski advocating for congressional input as the Commission considers the Chairman’s “third way” proposal on broadband regulation. The letter encouraged Chairman Genachowski not to take untoward actions that discourage further investment, restrict network management, slow the deployment of broadband, and jeopardize the jobs associated with broadband expansion. Furthermore, the announcement that Senators Jay Rockefeller and John Kerry, as well as Representatives Henry Waxman and Rick Boucher plan to pursue an inclusive process to revise the 1996 Telecommunications Act is also encouraging. Members of Congress should create a new path forward that clarifies The Chicago Crusader

the FCC’s authority over broadband services while prioritizing the National Broadband Plan’s objective of universal broadband access. Back to the point of this piece: Bringing the power back to the people. What matters as we move forward on broadband are three critical issues. First, we must settle on implementing a broadband rulemaking process that serves to bridge the digital divide that still exists in many parts of this country. Recent statistics out of the FCC indicate that broadband adoption among African Americans still trails behind the national average. As broadband offers important opportunities for affordable health care, civic participation, online education and economic empowerment, it is unacceptable that members of our community do not have access to these benefits. Members of Congress should stand up for their underserved constituents and help forge a compromise that will encourage affordable access to broadband. Second, legislation would better account for the need for substantial private sector investment in broadband. It is hard to deny the power of private investment, especially when the broadband industry has pumped between $50 and $60 billion annually for the

ing process Congress will recognize what we have known all along, that broadband internet is a job creator. Not only does broadband build-out directly create jobs, but it also has spillover benefits, allowing displaced workers to retrain and seek out new job opportunities. Job creation is no small matter given our current economic climate, as it leads to greater wealth creation, community building, and overall prosperity for all Americans. Chairman Genachowski must heed the calls of the bipartisan group of legislators who have implored him not to regulate broadband internet services. Instead this matter should be resolved by members of Congress. Congressional intervention will provide an effective avenue for minorities and underserved communities to express our concerns, while narrowing the digital divide, promoting continued investment, and creating jobs. Danny Bakewell, Sr. last several years to bring broadband into our neighborhoods, schools and community centers. As staff from the FCC has estimated that it could take up to $350 billion to deploy broadband nationally, current levels of

investment must be maintained to ensure that broadband and its benefits are able to reach all Americans. Finally, and most importantly, through its more rigorous and diverse fact-finding and rulemakSaturday, June 19, 2010

Congressional action on broadband is the only true way to bring the power back to the people. We thank the members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other key elected officials for pressing this important matter before the Federal Communications Commission. 5

The National Black United Front (NBUF) is preparing for the Thirty-first Annual National Convention to be held in Kansas City, Missouri from July 22-24, 2010 at the African Centered Education Collegium Campus, 6410 Swope Parkway.

Dr. Conrad Worrill The theme of this year’s convention is “Unity & Peace vs. Conflict & Violence.” Dr. Lance Williams Khepra, Assistant Director and Professor of the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies of Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, Illinois will give the opening presentation on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the National Town Hall Meeting. Dr. Williams Khepra is a nationally recognized expert on youth violence and its relationship to the Hip Hop Generation. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the Town Hall Meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. Under the dynamic leadership of the new NBUF Chairperson, Brother Kofi Taharka of Houston, Texas, the new Vice Chairperson of Organizing and Training, Brother Salim Adofo, with the assistance of NBUF National Secretary, Toriono Granger and 6

National Treasurer, Sandra Dean, NBUF continues to be a major participant in the Black Liberation Movement. The National Black United Front, over a thirty-one year period, has related to, and organized around, numerous issues that have impacted on the African World Community. Whether it was combating the numerous cases of police brutality in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other urban centers, NBUF was there. Whether it was fighting to save people from the death penalty in Texas and Chicago, NBUF was there. NBUF has constantly challenged the racist and white supremacists public policy positions of the Criminal Justice System and to that end our Prison Correspondence Program keeps us in contact with our sisters and brothers behind the walls throughout America. NBUF was at the forefront of the Free South Africa Movement and played a leading role in forcing economic sanctions against South Africa’s Apartheid regime. Our picketing of entertainers who were on the South African Entertainers Hit List for performing in South Africa, against the will of the movement in South Africa, brought great public attention to the plight of our brothers and sisters in that region of the world. Our work with the New Jewel Movement in Grenada was significant. Whether it was the Summer Work Study Project, working on the runway at the airport or volunteering in the schools, NBUF was there. In our international work, the Commission on Women’s Issues of NBUF organized a delegation of NBUF sisters who attended the United Nations World Conference on Women, held in Nairobi, Kenya in July 10-19, 1985. The NBUF sisters made a significant contribution at this conference by networking with African women from all over the world and presenting a paper on “The Presence of African Women in America.” NBUF was there for Jesse Jackson’s presidential runs in 1984 and 1988, and the successful mayoral bids of Africans in America in Chicago, New York, Saturday, June 19, 2010

St. Louis, Kansas City, and Houston in the 1980s. NBUF participated in other electoral campaigns for seats in Congress and state offices in several districts around the country. In fact, one of our own, Rev. Jew Don Boney won a council seat in Houston, Texas. NBUF member, Lee Barnes successfully won a school board seat on the same board in Kansas City, Missouri. NBUF played a key role in the efforts to organize the African American Leadership Summit in 1994. NBUF members were key organizers in the historic Million Man March in October of 1995. On the education front, over the past twenty years, NBUF has been, and continues to be, the key grassroots organizers in the African Centered Education Movement. Our World African Centered Education Plan is a model for addressing the various areas of education. As a response to revelations that the CIA was involved in t he explosion of crack/cocaine in the African Communities in America in the summer of 1996, NBUF launched a historic Genocide Petition Campaign Against the United States Government. This Genocide Petition Campaign produced over 200,000 signatures and in May 1997, the NBUF led delegation traveled to the United Nations Human Rights Center in Geneva, Switzerland and presented these petitions and other evidence on behalf of African people in America. Out of our successful Genocide Campaign, NBUF collaborated with the December 12th Movement that organized the Durban 400 to participate and helped successfully lobby the United Nations World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) to declare that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery were Crimes Against Humanity in the summer of 2001. As a follow-up to our successful participation in this conference, NBUF continued to collaborate with the December 12th Movement in organizing the Millions For Reparations Rally that was held August 17, 2002 in Washington, D.C. where over 50,000 African people attended from 38 states, 67 cities, and viewed by

Parental Responsibilities about Gangs Parents should be aware, parents should be aware that gangs and gang members are on the prowl. Children should already be aware that they might be approached to be recruited by members of gangs. That some of their friends will be approached by friends who might be class members who are known to be in one gang or another. Your children should be ready to let you know if they have been approached and also he/she should know how to respond in the event some one should approach him/her. Knowing where and who the recruiter is, if the recruiter is known to your child, is also important. Remind your child that he/she should notify his/her parent who should then notify police and/or teacher(s). Often times teachers are fearful of these males or females, who present themselves as members of these subcultures, in the school. Those children who have notified their parents of an eminent danger regarding gang recruitment hopefully can rest assured that the proper authorities are alerted and the culprits are dealt with in an appropriate fashion. The parent and child should expect the police personnel to be trained to handle the situation that should help protect the child. The family unit should be able to expect that plain clothes police officers who specialize in gang and tactical units are working with the citizens in a capacity that will make it easy to observe these gang members. Individuals who are into the millions on CSPAN. In the spring of 2003, NBUF National Chairman, Dr. Conrad W. Worrill, requested that Minister Louis Farrakhan convene a meeting of the key reparations organizers, activists, researchers, scholars, and spiritual workers. This meeting occurred in July 2003 at the Salaam Restaurant in Chicago and out of that meeting the NDABA Movement unfolded. On September 13, 2003, NBUF joined the Millions For Reparations Rally at the United Nations in New York and helped to link the Reparations Movement with the Pan African struggle worldwide. The NDABA Movement meetings were convened in October 2003 in Jackson, Mississippi and in March 2004 in Houston, Texas. This process greatly helped strengthened the unity in the Reparations Movement in America. Through the NDABA Move-

Being able to take back the innocence of the youth of this metropolis empowers the family to be a part of the American dream instead of the American terror. One must understand that gang activity is anticipated to get even worse starting the first days of the end of the school year. Parents must begin to push law enforcement as well as our legislators. Since our inception, NBUF has consistently sponsored a variety of cultural programs throughout the United States, including our Frontlines Album Project, our sponsorship of annual Kwanzaa Programs, and African Liberation Day activities. This has been a major part of NBUF’s work. Through our Frontline Newsletter, Front Page Newspaper, NBUF’s website, e-mail, letters, phone calls, and the traditional grapevine, NBUF communicates with the world. Most importantly, in our organizing efforts, NBUF has maintained strict financial indepen-

They say the fight done got so ugly that a great divide is occurring in that house of de Lawd and pitting new church members against the tried and true folk who been with the church since its founding pastor went to the Great Bye and Bye. All of this comes as the congregation struggles to pay for a new multimillion sanctuary that they don’t need, can’t afford and ain’t moved into as of yet. In fact, half of them say they don’t even know where its located. “De pastor won’t tell us where it be…” said one church member standing on a South Side corner. “Its suppose to be a surprise!.” Huh? Soon after I was fired, I called 311 and asked them what date, by city law, the heat supposed to be turned on in all office buildings in Chicago. I was told by September 15th all office buildings suppose to have the heat on. …I worked in a building that, by city law, was not up to code. In another episode of “Employee gets Fired and Writes a Nasty Letter about Her Old Job Soap Opera,” here is an excerpt from the Voice of the Negro Employee’s 10,000-word rant about why Black Chicago’s favorite radio station is kind of booty: “This day was cold and when I came into the building, the lobby where I sit was cold as well. I had on my hat and jacket that I did not remove. Rod Blagojevich he’s a government informant? Have you read the paper lately where this somebdoy all of a sudden is attacking his best friend like a junk yard dog? The move is to distract people away from them tapes that claim he was so interested in a senate seat that he or somebody close to him might have been willing to pay for it. The evil politician should not worry because the Alaphabet Boys have never said he did nothing wrong—yet, and therefore there’s no reason for him to be hiding in his South Shore residences like a 2-dollar hoe hiding from Pretty Ricky cruising the strip in his purple cadillac. He did make an apperance at his daddy’s event where he ranted and raved and pretended to be knowleageable about spilled oil. Directly across from his was his rich brother whose lips look like they could suck a golf ball through a straw. Both boys looked nervous and happy at the same time. Strange sight to say the least. RUN FLOTUS RUN Them redbones living around Hyde Park are convinced that FLOTUS (first lady of the united states) is going to do a Hillary and run for public office soon after her husband leaves the White House six years from now. While they hoping they can wrestle a U.S. Senate position for her, some say maybe she wants to put Bobby “I Hate All White People” Rush to rest, given all that bad blood he gave her hubby in 2000 when Obammay thought he was black enough to represent Englewood and Robbins, Illinois. They say Michelle Obama’s approval ratings are higher than that man who be dodging cars near 95th and the Dan Ryan asking for

loose change and she ain’t forgot the ass whipping and only political lost her good looking husband ever had. With that said, they think FLOTUS will make an excellent politician and perhaps might herself run for the White House. However, we hear a certain bald, state senator is eyeballing the 1st District for himself and is hoping that Mr. Hush retires soon, given how bad he looks when he’s seen in public. He looks like a zombie with an afro. What that particular state senator don’t realize, since he’s cut from a different kind of Negro cloth, these old politicians don’t retire— they die in office, never passing the torch to nobody but themselves (or maybe one son—but look at the County Board and you can see how that turned out). There’s a small group in AuburnGresham who say they will convince another state senator to also “seek the seat” because she actually seems like she cares about people and won’t sell folk out—although her white pastor might tell her otherwise. All we seen him do was run from police, rhyme like doctor sues and hire a bunch of white people to be his employees. However, how about somebody scratchin’ his name off and putting Carol Mosely Braun’s back on there. She ought to be tired selling jelly jars. She’s still got credibility, she knows the law, and she could beat both the Greek and the (rhymes with play) white males who messin’ over enough money to stabilize Zimbabwe, when neither one of them gone do nothing for Colored folk.

They say there is no truth to the rumor that a popular preacher and sometime politician lately has been fond of rubbing on sisters who work on his church affairs hind parts. Therefore there is no way possible that 3-year-old child one of the ladies still trying to breast feed belong to that ugly, pot-bellied man. Well, this preacher does have a roaming eye—and got kicked out of one church in Englewood a long, long, long time ago because not only did he run it in the ground but he was said to have gotten two people pregnant at the same time—and neither women was his wife! They say anytime some woman even half-way look at her ugly husband who rides in luxury cars, wears tight suits and eats high on the piglet, the church’s first lady hikes up her already too short skirt to her Sunday suit just a little higher. These women keep it up and that lady gone be coming to communion in nothing but her drawers. Anything to keep a no good man!

BUSINESS

How the Working Poor Became Big Business New novel, Broke, USA tells the story By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer In the midst of long-term, double-digit unemployment and millions of foreclosures, many in America are struggling to financially hold on. But for others, the plight of the poor is prime time for making money – and a lot of it. In Broke USA, author Gary Rivlin shares how payday lending has become a $33 billion a year ‘poverty industry’. With small dollar loans typically ranging from $300-$500, some in America are getting rich off of the multitudes who are just scrimping to piece together a modest living for themselves and their families. In a recent National Public Radio Interview, Rivlin, a former reporter for The New York Times shared his reactions to his lengthy study of an industry that preys upon people with little money and few options for credit. “To me, the real reason payday has grown like it has is more of an economic reason than a geographic reason,” observed Rivlin. “There’s been stagnating wages among the lowest 40 percent [of wage earners] in this country, and so they’re not earning anymore real dollars.” Continuing he added, “At the same time, rent is going up, health care is going up [and] other expenses are going up, and it just becomes harder and harder for these people who are making$20,000 [or] $30,000 a year to make ends meet.” According to research by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), each year, $5 billion is taken from the pockets of working families to pay for interest on loans from one of 24,000 payday lenders now in operation – more than the number of McDonald’s or Burger King restaurants nationwide. The average payday borrower has nine repeat loans per year. A $300 loan typically costs $50 in interest by year’s end, and the customer actually owes more in interest than in principal. Further, CRL found that nearly 59 million repeat payday loans actually account for 76 percent of the industry’s revenues. And among repeat borrowers, 87 percent occur within two weeks of a previous loan. Payday lending with 400 percent interest rates is not a bridge between families’ expenses and income shortfalls; it is a debt trap that is a fast track to deeper financial troubles. It is the The Chicago Crusader

triple digit interest rates that wind up forcing customers deeper in debt with every passing payday. Worse yet, CRL research further verifies that this billion dollar growth industry preys most upon communities of color – black and brown. In California, the nation’s most populous state, payday lenders are nearly eight times more concentrated in African-American and Latino neighborhoods as compared to white areas. In this one state, $247 million is drained from working families in fees alone. Even after accounting for variables such as income, poverty rates and education, payday lenders were twice as likely to operate in communities of color. In Phoenix, Arizona’s largest city, the same preponderance of

Charlene Crowell payday stores in communities of color is repeated. South Phoenix, historically the only part of the city where community people of color were allowed to live, is also home to the majority of its 211

payday stores. The same racial pattern also emerged in Tucson, the state’s second largest city. On July 1, 2010, the State of Arizona will sunset payday lending. The successful pro-consumer campaign that won a voter mandate in 2008 and survived two legislative attempts in 2010 was recently but cautiously celebrated. According to Bishop Henry L. Barnwell, pastor emeritus of First New Life Baptist Church in Phoenix, “It was a people’s victory, supported and fought on moral high ground. It was a victory supported by several members of the Valley’s clergy, who spoke to the immorality of 400 percent interest rates.” “The payday industry and its supporters”, concluded Rev. Barnwell, “are now demonstrating a disregard and

disrespect for the will of the people.” Bishop Barnwell is absolutely correct. There is something terribly wrong – and immoral – about an industry that celebrates financial success on the backs of cashstrapped black and brown people. It is also an industry that smears the credibility of reputable businesses that practice a different kind of commerce. When fair prices match with clear transactions, both businesses and consumers benefit. Real economic development brings convenient and accessible services and products that together enhance a community’s quality of life. Wherever payday lending occurs, however, the effects are more akin to economic depriva(Continued from page 15

EDUCATION Museum Of Science And Industry Honors ChicagoArea Students, Teachers And Community Leaders The Museum of Science and Industry honored recent high school graduates, teachers and after-school science club providers from across the Chicago area for their passion for science. They were recognized at an event celebrating the Museum’s Center for the Advancement of Science Education. The event, held June 9 at the Chase Bank auditorium in Chicago, featured remarks from Dr. Carla Pugh, director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “In today’s technology-driven world, our nation’s future depends on new generations of scientists who can continue our legacy of science leadership,” said David Mosena, Museum president and CEO. “We need more students who want to be engineers, explorers, doctors and inventors, and we need more educators who are confident in teaching science to nurture that interest. That’s why the Museum has placed educational programming at the heart of what we do.” The 31 students who were recognized are part of the Museum’s Science Achievers youth development program, which provides teens from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to learn about science, develop public-speaking skills, prepare for college and learn about science careers. Science Achievers also participate in paid internships, mentor

younger students and engage Museum guests of all ages in fun, handson science activities on the Museum floor. The Museum provided a surprise gift to the Science Achievers graduates who are going on to college in the fall — laptop computers, generously provided by CDW Corporation. The event also honored Chicagoarea teachers who have completed the Museum’s yearlong professional development course. Many of these teachers have little experience teaching science and credit the Museum’s program for building their skills and passion for science. Courses can be taken as part of a new master of science education degree offered jointly by the Museum and Illinois Institute of Technology in a partnership that is the first of its kind in the nation. Twenty-eight teachers were specially recognized for participating in the Museum’s courses for at least three years. They received a microscope that connects to a computer, allowing the class to watch live video of the microscope’s images. The Museum also recognized five schools for their commitment to science education by allowing their teachers to participate in Museum courses for four years. Those schools are: • Andersen Community Academy, Chicago • Dixon Elementary School, Chicago • Gallistel Language Academy,

Chicago • Heritage Middle School, Berwyn • Sawyer Elementary School, Chicago The event also recognized staff and leaders at 23 sites that are part of the Museum’s network of after-

school Science Minors Clubs. They were honored for participating in the program for at least three years, and staff members also received a microscope and software for connecting to a computer. Programs offered through the Center for the Advancement of Sci-

ence Education are designed to realize the Museum’s vision: to inspire and motivate our children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, medicine and engineering. Each year, these programs reach about 1,000 teachers and 5,000 students.

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

Kings of the Evening “…..When a man can stand up to the mirror, he can stand up to life….” Back for another run at ICE Theaters at 210 W. 87th St., in Chicago, after having good runs throughout the country and at local film festivals, is a brilliant movie, Kings of the Evening, set in the Great Depression era, which counts model/actor Tyson Beckford as its co-executive producer. The film stars Black movie legends Lynn Whitfield, Willard E. Pugh, Glynn Turman and Lou Meyers, among others. The movie will screen beginning Friday, June 18. Kings of the Evening is a study in what ultimately makes a man feels as if he’s worth something. The expression “clothes make the man” holds much weight in Kings of the Evening. Kings of the Evening is set in the Deep South, somewhere in Georgia it’s presumed, and the local entertainment, other than drinking at the neighborhood bar, is a weekly “swanking” contest, which involves poor men getting dressed in their Sunday best, whether they have to beg, borrow or steal it, in order to strut or “swank” around to the audience’s delight. In the end, the winner takes home a grand prize of $5. But the ultimate grand prize, for the man who wins, is to be King of the Evening; an honor that most times comes with female companionship and the envy of the other men. The event is based on a South African culture made famous by the Swenkas of the Zulu tribe. Homer Hobbs, played by Beckford, has recently been released from jail and returns to where he once lived to find not only his mother has moved, but he’s low on just about everything else, money and friends included. He meets Benny, a hustler by trade, who longs to relocate to Florida where he says, “a man doesn’t have to work.” He at least helps Hobbs find a job at a cement factory and a cot to “flop” on at Ms. Gracie’s boarding house; for a small finder’s fee of 25 cents. Gracie is played by Whitfield, a woman who’s seen happier times and has all her hopes and treasures tied up in her home that’s been a refuge, as well, to many others in the past. One of Gracie’s better lines in the movie, as she tries to make

THE KARATE KID A Review by Bonnie DeShong In 1984 we were introduced to a young kid from Jersey named Daniel LaRusso who moves to California, doesn’t fit in, bully’s beat him up and Mr. Miyagi teaches him the art of karate and he wins the day. I can still remember the theater going up in cheers when Ralph gets in the Crane position kicks the heck out of the bully and wins the tournament. It is now 2010 and the Karate Kid is back! Well maybe it should be called the Kung Fu kid since that is the art that is being taught, but you know, it didn’t bother me because I can’t tell the difference anyway and neither could the 300 people that was in the ICE Theaters watching it with me. 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) has to leave everyone behind in Detroit when his mother’s (Taraji P. Henson) job transfers her to China. Needless to say the only Black kid in the school is going to get bullied by a gang of vicious Kung Fu fighting Chinese boys. It doesn’t make matters any easier that Dre has a crush on a cute classmate named Mei Ying. On the way home from school the bullies corner Dre in a courtyard and begin to really beat him up. Just as they were getting ready to finish the job Dre is saved by the handy-

man, Mr. Hon (Jackie Chan). Now during this fight scene you have six boys fighting Jackie Chan. I at first thought, why is this grown man fighting these 12 –16 year old boys. Then I realized that the skill of martial arts knows no age. Deep! Long story short, Mr. Hon teaches Dre Kung Fu the good old fashion way. No there isn’t any “wax on, wax off ” but there is a lot of “take off your coat, hang up your coat, put on your coat, drop your coat, and pick up your coat.” Finally it is time for the tournament and I am sure you know the ending. People have blasted this film but I liked it. As I said before, I saw it in my neighborhood theater and to hear the responses of the kids and their parents throughout the movie was worth the price of the movie ticket. Finally there was a film these kids could see, cheer for the underdog and truly enjoy and understand the meaning of the story. At the end there isn’t any crane move but there is a cobra type thing and again, the audience was on their feet at the end cheering Dre to victory. Jackie Chan carries the film but Jaden brings his own to the character of Dre. He has the Kung Fu moves down and frankly, you like him. Will Jaden be better when it is time for Karate Kid 2, yes, he will be older and more stable in his craft. I did have a

hard time understanding Mei Ying’s lines but I don’t think I missed anything. There were a few dead spots throughout the film. Some pauses just a little too pregnant. I say SPEND THE MONEY on this one and take the entire family.

JACKIE CHAN AS Mr. Han, right, and Jaden Smith are shown in 'The Karate Kid.'

Currently a member of the double bass section of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Conyers won the position after a three-and-a-half year tenure as principal bass of the Grand Rapids Symphony (MI) and four summers as a member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra (NM). He has played with the Boston and Detroit Symphonies, Minnesota Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. When Conyers joins the Orchestra he will be the first African American to win a position in that august institution in 36 years.

Ravinia Festival cancels July 6 Cat Empire/Soulive/Raul Midon concert

Ravinia Festival President and CEO Welz Kauffman has been selected to lead a team of Illinois decision-makers—including leaders from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), The Polk Brothers Foundation and the University of Illinois—at a multi-state Education Leadership Institute convened by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Illinois team joins four others—led by the Oregon Arts Commission; Washington States Arts Commission; New Hampshire State Council on the Arts; and the Ohio Arts Council—at the NEA Institute in Chicago on July 26-28. The goal is to create strategies to strengthen arts education. The Illinois team will explore the role of the arts in developing 21st-century skills. Kauffman recently took a tour of schools and community centers throughout Illinois which have helped prepare him to lead the brainstorming sessions. Kauffman designed the Ravinia tour in celebration of the 2009 Abraham Lincoln bicentennial with the goal to share festival programming—classical music in particular—with other communities, specifically those downstate that had importance in Lincoln’s life. The tour featured performances of several pieces by the Lincoln Trio, including a Ravinia commission—a winning entry in Ravinia’s first competi-

Welz Kauffman tion for composers. Under the banner Mystic Chords of Memory (a phrase Lincoln penned in his first inaugural address), the Lincoln celebration allowed Ravinia to expand educational opportunities at all levels, from elementary school students to conservatory-level musicians in Ravinia’s Steans Institute for Young Artists “As the son of two teachers, I think of myself as a lifelong student—even when I’m in a teaching role, whether it’s running scales with a piano student or shaping the plans and policy for Ravinia’s REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs, which are designed to bring music back to the kids in budget-strapped schools,” Kauffman said. “So I am eager for this once-in-a-lifetime learning experience in which the ex-

change of ideas between leaders from so many walks might integrate cultural awareness into a new curriculum to shape a next generation of leaders who won’t have to apologize for the arts but can embrace them—not only as part of the school day but as part of every day.” According to the Arts Alliance Illinois, the arts are considered a core academic subject by the ISBE and the federal “No Child Left Behind” Act. When the AllCity Performing Groups of the Chicago Public Schools presented their end-of-the-year concert May 29 in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, the audience was repeatedly requested to contact their elected officials regarding the importance of arts education as a core academic subject. A 2005 Harris Poll found that 93 percent of Americans agree that the arts are vital to a wellrounded education, however, many schools struggle with financial and time constraints in mainstreaming arts education and in times of “budget crunch” arts programs are the first to be placed on the proverbial chopping block, in total disregard of the ISBE mandate. Launched in 2007, the NEA’s Education Leaders Institute brings together policymakers, educators, advocates, and artists to design arts education plans for their respective states.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

Dedication to the Mayor of Englewood The following is written as a “stroll down memory lane” and in a voice from someone living in the 60’s. By Elaine Hegwood Bowen June 10, 2010 It’s 1965, and my father walks less than five blocks from our home to Crown Buick Co. at 63rd and Elizabeth streets and buys a fire-engine red Buick Riveria. He had previously marvelled at the car in the showroom. As he negotiates a price, my sister and I take advantage of a warm October day to walk to Coney Island at 63rd and Ada streets, just a couple of blocks west of Crown. Coney Island is the neighborhood fast food joint. Well, let me correct that: Coney Island is the place where the youngsters hang out. Nan’s on 63rd and Loomis and Red Apple on 63rd and Ashland cater to the mature crowd of this Englewood neighborhood. My usual order is a burger and fries and, of course, a “suicide.” A suicide is a soft drink made from most of the fountain flavors. My preference is more coke and orange flavors. As my father proudly deposits $400 on a $3163 debt—leaving him with a 36-month, $77.60 note—-I reluctantly clunk down what seems to me a life savings of about 75 cents for my order. As he drives past the Del Farm grocery store, also at 63rd and Loomis Boulevard, reality hits him: He has to give my mother money for food. That’s all right. We may have to eat beans and cornbread for a couple of days, but we are sure to look good in that red Riviera. That intersection is busy at this time of day. The rush hour busses running up and down the two streets take passengers either south on Loomis or west on 63rd Street from the final stop on the Englewood-Howard El line. 63rd Street is the business dis-

trict of this neighborhood. Between Halsted to the east and Ashland to the west are a myriad of shops and restaurants that Blacks are welcome to patronize. Thompson’s Barber Shop also serves as the local polling place at election time. A Mandl and Sons Cleaners advertises a plant on premises. One of their specialties is blocking hats, and my father uses this service. Sarah’s Beauty Salon is always filled with women vying to look beautiful, especially on the weekends—-and especially for church. There are even two banks on this short strip—Chicago City Bank and Trust Company and the Ashland and Sixty-Third State Bank. The neighborhood to the west of Ashland is entirely white and, even though our money is green, we are not welcome to shop there. On our way back from Coney Island—catsup dripping everywhere—I spend the rest of my pennies on candy at Big Mama’s grocery store. It takes us a while to arrive home, but it takes my father even longer. Although we live only a short distance from the car dealership, my father takes a leisurely drive home, beaming with pride every inch of the way. With a smile on his face, as bright as the grill on the car, he pulls into the driveway of our home, which stands on the corner. The new red car figures nicely into the “American Dream.” Ours is a blue house with white trim, a medium-size back yard filled with a blue and white gymnasium set and a tall evergreen, decorated at Christmas time with lights. Neatly manicured hedges surround the side lawn. Of course, there is a blue and white, two-seat swing chair on the front porch, with a view of the same neatly manicured hedges and another evergreen. The huge picture window on the front of the house is adorned with blue and white awning. One dismal reminder that another family lived here before us is the brass plate on the front door

I feel better knowing that everything turned out okay.” Chicago radio station WVONAM broadcasted live from the event. Matt McGill, from the Matt and Perry Show, interviewed former NFL player Reggie Smith about the importance of getting annual check-ups. “My health was not always a top priority,” said Smith, “but as I got older, I realized that I was not going to live forever and needed to start taking better care of myself.
