What really happened in Charleston Details of the mass shooting emerge as donations pour in By Clemon Richardson CHARLESTON, South Carolina - The whole world watched as a multiracial crowd packed the re-opened church and grieved with its parishioners. The Reverend Dr. Norvel Goff Sr., Presiding Elder of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church last Sunday discarded the program he had planned for Father’s Day. Instead, he welcomed several ministers in attendance to join him before the congregation. “Many of us are still trying to seek answers to what happened last Wednesday,” Goff said in his sermon. “Well, I been there, done that, spent the night. And I decided to turn it over to Jesus. “‘Preacher, are you saying we should forget what has happened?’” Goff asked. “No, don’t forget. But remember the God who created us all, the God who will make a way out of no way. There are answers we are still waiting for. But we will find those answers SUPPORT FOR THE families who lost loved ones in the mass shooting in Charleston grows as funerals begin throughout the city. (Continued on page 3)

CPS future uncertain as negotiations looms By Erick Johnson Pressure is building as contract negotiations between the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and Chicago Teacher’s Union (CTU) nears. State lawmakers rejected a bill that would have delayed a massive pension payment thats due next Tuesday, June 30. The move is another setback for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, whose support from the Black lawmakers continues to slide since the CPS closed 50 schools in 2013. The defeat also comes as leaders voice concerns over Emanuel’s hand-picked members of the Chicago Board of Education. Critics fear the new members will fight to protect the status quo rather than shake up a school system that’s broken and

struggling under a $1 billion deficit. The events are building up to an intense period of contract negotiations between the CPS and CTU. And with little optimism, the future remains cloudy for Emanuel and the nation’s third largest school system. The crisis was heard in Springfield, where the Illinois House on Tuesday, June 23 defeated Emanuel’s plan to delay a $634 million pension payment that’s due on June 30. Lawmakers voted 53-46 against the plan after Democrats blamed Governor Bruce Rauner for not providing enough Republican votes to approve the bill, which fell just 18 votes shy to pass. About 10 members of the 19-member House Black Caucus lawmakers voted against the bill, a sign that Emanuel has lost support from leaders who are still con(Continued on page 16)

Local faith leaders speak out against shootings By Chinta Strausberg Chicago’s faith leaders recently used their worship services to speak out against racism after a white gunman killed nine people at a historic Black church in Charleston on June 17. Referring to the hate crime by confessed killer 21-year-old Dylann Roof, Pfleger said these acts prove that the “evil of hatred, racism and bigotry” are still alive and well in America. While some say Roof acted alone, Pfleger joined others in saying there were co-conspirators involved. “He was not alone,” Pfleger said of Roof, who admitted he sat with his victims for nearly an hour during their bible study at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Charleston, S.C. before he shot nine of them. 2

SATURDAY, June 27, 2015

The shootings did not keep the Emanuel African Methodist A.M.E. Church from holding their Sunday worship service, where ministers led an upbeat and resilient message that honored the victims of the massacre. Days after the mass shooting, Faith leaders across Chicago’s South side opened their doors with prayer vigils to comfort those seeking answers to a crime that has angered Blacks across the nation and reignited the debate on race-relations in America. The outrage has extended to Columbia, South Carolina, where Governor Nikki Haley reversed her stance and joined civil rights leaders who have called for the removal of the Confederate flag that still flies in the front of the capitol building. With the killings of innocent Blacks, the flag remains a divisive symbol of hatred that re-

Father Michael Pfleger minds them of the pain and abuse their ancestors suffered prior to the Civil War. “Hatred is part of America’s history, and we can fight to take the Confederate flag down over the state capitol of South Carolina and we should,” Pfleger said.

“But, we also got to take the flag that is flying in the hearts of Americans of hatred and confederacy.” A day after the shootings, Reverend James Moody, pastor of the Quinn A.M.E. Chapel, prayed with parishoners during a vigil at his church. During a phone conversation, Moody said he spoke to a friend who had been in Charleston at the church when the crime occurred on June 17. Reverend Moody said, “The city is at peace” when Roof was captured just one day after the killings. As far as Roof, Pfleger said, “There are those who want to bypass this ugly sin that runs in our blood stream in America, and they’ve said this person (Roof ) is mentally-challenged or mentally ill.” However, Pfleger isn’t buying that theory. “I doubt that he’s too

intellectually challenge when he craftily planned this attack for two-months at this church that has so much history. He was not intellectually slow. He knew exactly what he was doing, and he chose the day and the time and the way.” Pfleger said he was recently on a teleconference with faith leaders who were discussing how to protect the church given what happened in Charleston. “Give me a break. We’re the people of faith. We don’t arm ourselves at churches and tell our young people don’t arm yourself. How hypocritical is that? “I would suggest that the people of faith not worry about protecting their pulpits but be more worried about protecting their prophetic voice that has been lost in the pulpits in America,” said Pfleger. www.chicagocrusader.com

Children reunited with jailed dads on Father’s Day Tearful fathers vow to change By Chinta Strausberg Determined to make Father’s Day meaningful for dads behind bars, Congressman Danny K. Davis (D7th) took two busloads of children to the Sheridan Correctional Center where for the very first time, they shared an emotional reunion with their parents. The day started at 7:30 a.m. as Davis and a group of children, adults and volunteers boarded two Gray Line Tours buses that at the GEO Reentry Services, Inc., 2650 W. Fulton at 7:30 a.m. Here, they made their second annual trip to Sheridan, a moderate prison for adult males. Last year, Davis had one busload of 32 children. But thanks to GEO Reentry Services this year, Davis filled two buses as part of his plan to take loved ones to see their fathers throughout the year. “Family is an intrinsic motivator for most of us but especially to someone who is incarcerated. By supporting Congressman Davis and Sankofa, we are nurturing a stronger community of practice in the 7th Congressional District. Engaging ongoing community support is an evidence-based approach to reducing recidivism,” said Emanuel Barr, out-

reach and operations manager for GEO Reentry Services. “This is a shared goal of all involved and we are honored to participate.” Like last year, Rep. Davis was accompanied by the Sankofa Safe Child initiative. During an interview before the trip, Davis credited Reverend Valerie Riley, who helped bring the idea of the Father’s Day trip into fruition. Riley is an associate minister at the First Baptist Congregational Church who is also a social worker at the Lutheran Family Services. Riley has a similar program that takes girls to see their mothers who are in prison. In 2012 during a conversation with Davis, Riley said she encouraged him to start a program where boys can see their fathers. “We were having a conversation about the needs of children to visit their parents and he was really inspired by it,” Riley recalled. “The idea took a life of its own. I am so pleased to be a part of this initiative to bring children to see their fathers.” When Davis, his staff and parents arrived at the Sheridan Correctional Center, he said the meeting was quite emotional. “There were a number of children who had never seen their fathers and several fathers had not seen their children in the 31-months they had been incarcerated,” said Davis. “To see the glee on the faces of the

What really happened in Charleston (Continued from page 1) by leaving our hands in the hands of God.” The words of comfort come as funeral services begin for the victims, whose deaths angered a nation and re-ignited the debate on race relations in America. President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver the eulogy on Friday at the funeral of Reverend Clementa Pinckney, 41, a state senator. First lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden

and his wife are expected to attend as well as a handful of lawmakers. Tributes continued to pour into Mother Emanuel on Monday. Church officials said they already had received more than a thousand e-mails from around the world and as many telephone calls. “On lady read a nice poem she had written and wanted to send copies to the families,” she said. A woman from Sierra Leone, West Africa, called and said that she and members of her Kono tribe wanted to

donate money to Mother Emanuel. Others pledged generously: Boeing Corp, which has a local airline assembly plant, contributed $100,000. A postal worker delivered several overstuffed bags of envelopes and told staffers he had several more. Inside, volunteers found gifts including quilts, knit blankets, bracelets, and crosses in alabaster boxes for the loves ones of the victims. Emanuel Pastor Reverend Clementa Pinckney’s young children would “never have to worry about their education.” Nine Charleston Bar Association members volunteered to provide free estate planning for surviving families. A local firm donated and installed a state-of-the-art system earlier on Monday. It covers every door, window, and the parking lot. Church officials said earlier that grainy images from the old security camera system could have made alleged mass murderer Dylann Storm Roof much harder to identify. There was no camera covering the Calhoun Street entrance off the meeting room. Police remain silent about the details of Roof’s attack. But in the days since the shootings that killed nine people during Wednesday night’s Bible study, survivors have shared chilling details with their families and friends about Roof’s murderous rampage. While their recollections could not be verified independently, many of these memories are disturbing. After sitting with the prayer group for more than an hour, witnesses say, Roof stood up, put his gun to a woman’s head and declared that he would “kill some n——— tonight,” but the woman would be spared to explain what happened. Pinckney was shot first, felled by a

single bullet as he lunged at the gunman. Then, 26-year-old Tywanza Sanders, the youngest of the victims, was the next to die. Pinckney’s wife, Mother Emanuel first lady Jennifer Pinckney, was in her husband’s office, just feet from the table where the prayer circle was meeting, when the first shots rang out. Hearing the gunfire, she and her child hid under a four-seat, circular table in Pinckney’s office. They were saved because Roof kicked the door so hard that it jammed against the door frame and blocked his deadly path. One woman survived by falling on the floor and pushing her nearby toddler granddaughter beneath her body. She told him to play dead. The oldest man in the room proved to be Roof’s most elusive prey. Reverend Daniel L. Simmons, 74, was found, still alive, near the back door, some 20 feet from where the shooting started and through which Roof exited to the church parking lot. The Vietnam War veteran, Purple Heart winner, and retired pastor died in surgery at the nearby Medical University of South Carolina. Roof, 21 was captured in Shelby, North Carolina within 24-hours of the shootings. He was charged with nine counts of murder. Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has joined several organizations who want the death penalty for Roof. SATURDAY, June 27, 2015

EDITORIAL AMERICAN STYLE RACIST TERRORISM 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof did the unthinkable; he went into North Carolina’s venerable Black church, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) in Charleston, participated in a Bible study for an hour, and then commenced to shoot and kill nine people. Only 3 people survived. Roof was proud of his deed, and left one potential victim alive because he wanted someone to tell what happened. Roof, who has a website touting white supremacist sentiments, gave as his reasoning for perpetrating the massacre, “... you’ve raped our women, and you are taking over the country ... I have to do what I have to do.” Moreover, according to a witness, Roof said that “he was there to shoot Black people.” Roof reportedly received a gun for his 21st birthday in April. Two months later he used it to kill people that he’d never met, people who had been nice to him welcoming him to their church. It is particularly chilling that he hobnobbed with them for at least an hour before opening fire and killing them. It takes a special kind of evil to do this; or a special kind of mind conditioning. In the age of a Black president, America has turned out to be anything but post-racial. Seemingly, racism is at a fever pitch, and both sides are reacting to what seems to be widespread sanctioning of racist policies. Police are manhandling and killing Black people all over the country at such a pace that a “Black Lives Matter” movement has become necessary. Even after the Michael Brown murder in Ferguson, Missouri and the Eric Garner incident in New York City, there have been numerous other incidents. The police seem to think that they have been given the green light to spit in the face of the Black Lives Matter movement. To what can we attribute this violence; this abject cruelty meted out by those who are supposed to serve and protect the public? Perhaps the answer lies in systemic racism, which has its origins in the beginning of the slave trade where Blacks were considered sub-human, so much so that during the early part of the last century Blacks were put on display in zoos! And all of this has its roots in a demonic hatred not unlike that which was demonstrated by Adolph Hitler and the Nazis during World War II. Dylann Storm Roof, an American terrorist, is a contemporary personification of this evil. Evidence of this lingering xenophobic madness is the flag of the Confederacy that flies over the South Carolina Capitol; a flag that Dylann Storm Roof venerates. We must not forget that this is a battle flag, a symbol that is anathema to Black sensibilities for obvious reasons; it is a symbol of American apartheid. Back to Roof - after committing an incredibly heinous crime, he was gently taken into custody by the police. He was given a bulletproof vest and, according to some observers, was allowed to get a fast food meal. He was not beaten up, pushed to the ground with a policeman’s knee in his back, he had no bruises and lacerations, he was not tasered, in short, he experienced a “gentleman’s arrest” which in itself sent a very loud message to America that there is, indeed, a bias against Blacks in America. Post-racial America is a non-existent reality. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, however. The nation’s cameras were focused on the Sunday services after the massacre at Emanuel A.M.E. church where parishioners and supporters from around the country, and some say around the world, came in peace sending a message of compassion and forgiveness. Though that message does not sit well with a large number of Black people who seek justice and revenge, the forgiving behavior demonstrated by families of the victims just might reach across psychological and racial barriers to help change the tide of evil that is engulfing America. If this doesn’t work, America risks going down in flames of its own making. A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR What’s next for Jesse Jackson, Jr. Dear Editor: It seems like a lot longer than it has been, but Jesse Jackson, Jr. is finally out of prisons and a halfway house. The big question I believe a lot of people have is what will the former congressman do next. According to the U.S. Constitution if he wants to run for Congress again he can. It is conceivable that he will have more employment options than at any time in his adult life. Sure there are a number of people who believe Jackson got everything coming to him when he was sentenced. No doubt there will be folks signing petitions and all other sorts of nonsense trying to focus on the negatives about him. A lot of them will be the same socalled Christians who spout how they believe in second chances. These people will want Jackson to pay one way or another for what they see as some tremendous crime. What they are not looking at is none of the donors who had their contributions squandered by Jackson are asking for their money back. It was not the government’s money he took but the restitution he has had to provide has gone into government coffers. Jackson will be on house arrest the next three months. No doubt that will give him an opportunity to have

face time with people who want to help him plot his future. His age, 50, coupled with his time in Congress means he has a lot to offer re: insights into the workings of the federal government and elections. This is a very valuable combination to some major corporations as well as someone looking to move up the ranks in the political arena. While he has many detractors I am not among them. I surely hope he is able to get back to what is considered a normal life with a lucrative career the moment he is off house arrest. Darius Francis

COMMENTARY

The Global Warming Myth – A Threat to America Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford The concept of Global Warming and the Environmental Justice Movement started to grow during the Nixon Administration. President Nixon saw it as a diversion from the Anti-Vietnam War Movement and the pressures of the Civil Rights Movement. He was shrewd in taking a tiny bureau from the Department of Interior and making it a cabinet level agency – The Environmental Protection Agency. Thus, the “Green Movement” began. By the time the Clinton Administration came to Washington, DC, claims of “environmental racism” were in full swing. When the Obama Administration came, people were talking about “environmental justice” on equal footing with the Civil Rights Movement. Currently, the Sierra Club (environmental advocate group) mixes the Civil Rights Movement with the Global Warming Movement as if they are the same thing. It is an outrageous lie! One of the biggest claims of the environmentalists is that air pollution known as Ozone causes Asthma. Asthma is a sickness that can lead to death. Let’s look at the definition, prevention and risk factors of this illness known as Asthma. Ac-

Harry C. Alford cording to the prestigious Mayo Clinic here is the information on Asthma: Definition – “Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Asthma can’t be cured, but the symptoms can be controlled.” Please note that it cannot be cured

and they don’t know what causes it. Prevention – “While there’s no way to prevent asthma, by working together, you and your doctor can design a step-by-step plan for living with your condition and preventing asthma attacks. Identify and avoid asthma triggers. A number of outdoor allergens and irritants – ranging from pollen and mold to cold air and air pollution – can trigger asthma attacks. Find out what causes or worsens your asthma, and take steps to avoid those triggers.” Strange? Cold air causes asthma while the environmentalists are claiming it is global warming doing it. Risk Factors – “A number of factors are thought to increase your chances of developing asthma. These include blood relatives (parent or sibling); having a similar illness such as hay fever; being overweight; being a smoker; exposure to second hand smoke; having a mother who smoked while pregnant; exposure to exhaust fumes; occupational triggers such as chemicals used in farming, hairdressing and manufacturing.” The claim that asthma is caused by Global Warming and Air Pollution is bunk! Our air Ozone levels have been decreasing on a yearly basis. Consistently, our Ozone levels are reducing at a very impressive rate. Yet, asthma levels are doing the reverse.

They are increasing. It becomes quite obvious that dirty air and Ozone are not factors causing asthma. It is something else and our medical industry can’t seem to figure it out. But one thing is certain: There is no correlation between asthma and our climate and our climate continues to improve due to improved technology and discipline. Despite the improving environment, the environmentalists continue their campaigns to hurt our industries and reduce our economic prowess. They are stopping millions of potential jobs and thousands of new businesses starting up and contributing to the economic growth of our great nation. This is more than the story of “Chicken Little” this is a direct attempt to cripple America. They feel that we are too big and too strong. “Shame on us for achieving and maintaining greatness.” They want to reduce our “carbon footprint” which means a lesser economy, fewer jobs, a smaller military to defend ourselves and protect the peace in the world. They believe that America as the number one nation in the world is selfish and we should surrender our status. Environmentalism is a tool to defeat us and, my people, I and my ilk will fight with every breath we take to stop this assault. They want to slow

us down and make us vulnerable to the bad guys. The bad guys who actually really pollute with a vengeance that is far greater than what we do. China, India, Russia, etc. are the biggest polluters in the world and don’t give a damn about it. Meanwhile, the environmentalists are attacking us – the ones who use improved technology to better serve our land, water and air. Secretary of State John Kerry has even admonished our African nations about building their infrastructures. He says they “must lessen their carbon footprint.” Secretary Kerry please send that logic straight to Hell. Africa’s day of development has arrived and they are going to build like “rock ‘n roll.” Their quality of life and economic status are going to improve greatly and without providing any damage to our environment. The United States has a vested interest in this as new friends – stronger and better is what we need. Build on America and pay no attention to the phony environmentalists. Whites Still Live in ‘State of Denial’ on Race By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley is fond of saying, “Slavery was America’s original sin, and racism remains its unresolved dilemma.” But the unwillingness to face up to the raw racism that led to the murder of nine African Americans attending Bible study at a church in Charleston, S.C. proves that the problem is more than just an unresolved dilemma. Judging by public opinion polls, most Whites live year-round in the 51st state – the state of denial. First, let’s deal with the facts. Around 9 p.m. on June 17, Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old avowed White supremacist, entered Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and murdered nine, unarmed African Americans, ranging from 26 to 87 years old. Each victim was shot multiple times. We have the murderer’s own words that his goal was to “start a race war,” according to law enforcement officials who took Roof into custody. Rather than address obvious racism, our non-friends on Fox & Friends and other Fox network programs attempted to make the massacre about religion, gun control and anything other than the actual culprit – racism. www.chicagocrusader.com

George E. Curry Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy referenced “hostility toward Christians.” That theme was echoed by Bishop E.W. Jackson when he noted that “we don’t know why he went into a church, but he didn’t choose a bar” or “basketball court.” Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani also postulated that “maybe he hates Christian churches.” But we aren’t talking about any Christian church. We are talking about a historic Black church that had been carefully targeted by the shooter.

Within minutes after his name was made public, Dylann Roof’s White supremacy views became widely known. A photo on his Facebook page showed him wearing patches with the flags of White minority-ruled South Africa during the apartheid era and Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Both flags are popular symbols associated with White supremacists in the U.S. Another photo posted on Facebook by one of Roof’s friends showed him leaning against an automobile sporting the license plate, “Confederate States of America.” Several days after the rampage, Roof’s racist manifesto was discovered. In it, he said: “Anyone who thinks that White and Black people look as different as we do on the outside, but are somehow magically the same on the inside, is delusional. How could our faces, skin, hair, and body structure all be different, but our brains be exactly the same? This is the nonsense we are led to believe. “Negroes have lower IQs, lower impulse control, and higher testosterone levels in general. These three things alone are a recipe for violent behavior…” Toward the end, he wrote: “I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of Blacks to Whites in the country. have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me.” Some conservatives tried to make the shootings a gun issue. After several Fox personalities suggested that ministers arm themselves, Steve Doocy chimed in, “If somebody was there, they would have had the opportunity to pull out their weapon and take [the shooter] out.” But it’s not that simple. “Fox & Friends used a mass shooting at a South Carolina church to baselessly promote the carrying of guns as a solution to prevent such attacks – even though research indicates that civilians are more likely to harm themselves or someone else than stop a criminal when they have a gun, and there is ‘no evidence; that arming civilians stops mass shootings,” observed mediamatters.org. After conducting a 5-month investigation, Mother Jones magazine concluded: “In the wake of the massacres this year at a Colorado movie theater, a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, we set out to track mass shootings in the United States over the last 30 years. “We identified and analyzed 62 of

them, and one striking pattern in the data is this: In not a single case was the killing stopped by a civilian using a gun. And in other recent (but less lethal) rampages in which armed civilians attempted to intervene, those civilians not only failed to stop the shooter but also were gravely wounded or killed. Moreover, we found that the rate of mass shootings has increased in recent years—at a time when America has been flooded with millions of additional firearms and a barrage of new laws has made it easier than ever to carry them in public places, including bars, parks, and schools.” Clearly, the rampage in Charleston, S.C. was not about attacking Christianity or the need for more guns. It was about racism – an issue this country has always been reluctant to address. George E. COMMENTARY

DR. MARTIN R. DELANY - A MAN WE SHOULD STUDY Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Web site: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago

Dr. Conrad Worrill The use of history as a tool of liberation is an ongoing battle that the African in American Community must come to grips with. Far too many African in American people reject the use of history as a tool to understand the past, the pre-

sent, and the future. The rejection of history, by many of us, results in the denial of our true condition and situation as thirty million people living in the United States. From time to time, in reflecting on our history and our present situation as a race, I reread a most profound book. In fact, I suggest that all African in American people read this book and become familiar with the work of this unsung hero in our struggle, Dr. Martin R. Delany. Martin R. Delany (a contemporary of Frederick Douglass and co-founder with Douglass of The North Star Newspaper) was a fearless and independent champion for the cause of our redemption from 1840 until his death in January 1885 at the age of 72. Dr. Delany was known as the most prominent advocate of African in American nationalism in the nineteenth-century. It was in his book, written in 1852, The Condition, Elevation, Emigrations, and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States that Delany’s view of the situation of our race became widely known. Delany was free born in Charleston, Virginia on May 6, 1812. In an effort to improve their situation, the Delanys moved to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania when Martin was ten years old. At the age of nineteen, young Martin moved to Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania where he worked as a barber and studied with an African in American minister named Lewis Woodson. Woodson is given credit for shaping Delany’s political thought. It was in Pittsburgh that Delany became exposed to the efforts of Africans in America who were organizing against the chattel slave system. These men were called abolitionists. Delany began attending meetings that focused on the abolition of slavery. These meetings and contacts with other African in American leaders inspired Delany to continue his self-education on the history of our race. He became an avid reader of world history and philosophy eventually emerging as one of the most important African in American thinkers and orators. Africans in America knew Delany for his opposition to the chattel slave system and for his call for Africans in America to voluntarily return to Africa and establish a nation. He was a tenacious fighter for African in American collective action and selfhelp throughout his participation in the movement. The life of Dr. Martin R. Delany should be required study for all African in American youth. For example, how many Africans in America are aware that Delany was among the small group of African in Ameri-

can medical students that attended Harvard Medical School in 1850 and 1851? Although white supremacy and racism forced Delany to withdraw (the white medical students strongly objected to a Black man graduating with them feeling this would lessen their degree), he went on to distinguish himself as an outstanding physician specializing in chronic diseases affecting women and children. Delany was a prolific writer. He wrote the third novel produced in this country by an African in America entitled, “Blake and the Huts of America.” Additionally, he published an account of his trip to Africa to locate emigration sites, “The official Report of the Niger Valley Exploring Party.” Delany’s final work, was titled, “Principia of Ethnology: The Origin of Races and Color with an Archaeological Compendium of Ethiopian and Egyptian Civilization.” It was in this work that Delany revealed that the ancient Egyptians and Ethiopians were Black, and the creators of the world’s first civilizations, contrary to the European conception of Egypt and Ethiopia (a concept they still cling to today despite all of the evidence to the contrary). The words that Delany wrote in 1852 have not changed and are still relevant and reflective of our condition today. In Condition and Eleva-

tion, Delany stated, “White men are producers— we are consumers. They build houses, and we rent them. They raise produce, and we consume it. They manufacture clothes and wares, and we garnish ourselves with them. They build coaches, vessels, cars, hotels, saloons, and other vehicles and places of accommodation, and we deliberately wait until they have gotten in readiness, then walk in, and contend with as much assurance for a “right” as though the whole thing was bought by, paid for, and belonged to us.” And finally, Delany said in this great work, referring to the Europeans, “By their literary attainments, they are the contributors to, authors and teachers of, literature, science, religion, law, medicine, and all other useful attainments that the world makes use of. We have no reference to ancient times— we speak of modern things.” Much of what Delany wrote and lectured about in the nineteenth-century concerning the condition of African in American people is still true today. Our challenge is to continue his legacy by breaking the mental chains of slavery that keep us dependent on others for our history and the interpretation of world events. Read the works of Dr. Martin R. Delany and you will find much wisdom.

WHAT ABOUT THE REAL BLACK WOMEN? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist By now, perhaps the disturbing story of Rachel Dolezal, the prevaricating white woman who passed for Black, led the Spokane NAACP, and wove a web of elaborate lies, has receded from media headlines. Probably not. I expect further follow-up, a book, and a reality show. While most African Americans have concluded that Dolezal is a mentally impaired liar, too many Caucasians obsessed with race, are likely to give this story legs. Meanwhile, there are millions of African American women who are rendered invisible by the media. If Matt Lauer wants to focus on the women in the NAACP, he ought to interview Roslyn Brock, the Chair of the NAACP board. If he wanted to look at the women who lead organizations, he should focus on Melanie Campbell (National Coalition for Black Civic Participation) or Sherilyn Ifill (NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund). These women can add substance, not sensationalist fluff, to a conversation about women and race. Where is the fifteen minute inter6

view of Dajerria Becton, the teenager who, bikini-clad, was brutally dragged by her hair at a Texas pool party? Where is the follow-up on Renisha McBride, the teen who was killed by a crazed white man from behind his locked screen door? When have any of the African American women in Congress been featured in the lengthy interviews that others in Congress get? Admittedly, lengthy profiles don’t happen often, but when they do happen, African American women certainly aren’t the focus of them. The presence of African American women in media is much improved from just a decade ago. MSNBC anchor Melissa Harris-Perry brings a welcome approach to issues, Gayle King and Tamryn Hall diversify a morning news lineup that was once far more homogeneous, and Gwen I fill bring a necessary gravitas to evening news, and Donna Brazile is an important part of the commentariat. While those who bring the news are more diverse, the content of news is much less so, and frivolous sensationalism is often given more visibility than substance is. African American women are also ignored by our natural allies, the

Dr. Julianne Malveaux white women who lead women’s organizations. To be sure, we can count on NOW’s Terry O’Neill, to be an advocate for social and economic justice issues. She has been a reliable ally to the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, a regular presence on Rev. Jesse Jackson’s radio program (disclosure – I’ve been on the program with her, on occasion), and a supportive force at national conventions. Still, Roland Martin was right to take her on regarding her silence about the way Dajerria Bec-

ton was brutalized. Truth be told, NOW should also be chastised for the many ways African American women, and our issues, are ignored by the nation’s premier women’s organization. In the words of Sojourner Truth, “Ain’t I A Woman.” Now that the Treasury Department has agreed that a woman will be on the U.S. currency by 2020, and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is seeking input on which women through a Treasury department website. A self-described grassroots organization called Women on 20s delivered a petition to President Obama in May, calling for a woman to appear on the twenty dollar bill. Of the 600,000 people who signed the petition, the most people selected Harriet Tubman to appear on the bill, with Eleanor Roosevelt being the second choice. Wouldn’t |it be great if majority women’s organizations pushed for an African American woman to grace our currency? It would certainly go a long way toward recognizing, not ignoring, Black women. The United Nations has designated 2015-2024 the International Decade for People of African Descent. The theme of the decade is

recognition, justice and development. The UN General Assembly has released a resolution that includes objectives and a program of activities for the decade. What if the media spent as much time on this as they have spent on a troubled imposter? To the extent that women of African descent around the globe experience similar histories and oppressions, such coverage could be informative and educational. Because African American women are too often invisible (or underrepresented) in the media and elsewhere, it is especially galling to watch the disturbing week of Dolezal coverage. Are African American only interesting when we are being portrayed by a confused wannabe Black woman? What about the real Black women? And what about asking African American women what they think about this nonsense to get interesting perspectives on this sideshow? What about looking at the “passing” phenomenon from an African American perspective (nobody knows how many African Americans passed for Caucasian to gain access to opportunities, educa(Continued on page 16) www.chicagocrusader.com

AND THEN THE PREZ SAID NIGGER The other day President Obama during an interview with a small radio station used the nigger word. For all the politically correct folks out there, sorry for not

of race relations in this country. So for all those who feel that it’s okay to go around using the word with reckless abandonment, think again ‘cause that ain’t what it’s about. In the meantime, it’s interesting how there are so many people concerned about one word and want it banned from being used. However, while there is supposedly all this concern, actions are not speaking louder than the word. On a daily basis, in one situation or another, some folks are either acting like a nigger or being

class citizens by the federal government and the Supreme Court. Some may argue that in some instances opponents of immigration reform view those wishing to come to America as the new niggers and much like during the heyday of the Civil Rights era when there were calls for Blacks to go back to Africa, we hear calls for them to go back where they come from today. Then there is the culture in the Black community that thinks you get cool creds for using the hood version of the word and

greet one another with “what’s up my nigga.” In the era of political correctness there doesn’t appear to be any deep level of thinking as to why we adopt certain positions, because other people are doing it, and we don’t want to seem out of step when we do it too. Seems like every time some racial incident occurs the first thing you hear is that we need to have a serious conversation on race. Of course that conversation never happens, and then life goes back to normal…that is until the next crisis occurs. Perhaps if we quit BS’ing and get down to business we’d have the talk, and then maybe begin to solve the problem.

Street named after Seaway Bank’s Jacoby Dickens Dozens turn out to honor legendary chairman of Seaway Bank By Erick Johnson It was time to pay back Jacoby Dickens. Even after several accolades, the balance was still overdue. After speeches and musical tributes, Chicago’s movers and shakers in Chatham renamed Langley Avenue after the prominent chairman of Seaway Bank who loaned mil-

lions of dollars to Blacks at a time when other white lenders would not give them a chance to achieve American Dream. Dickens died in 2013, but the honor was the latest return on his generous investments that transformed 87th Street into a bustling thoroughfare of Black businesses and professional firms, restaurants and stores. On a cool Friday morning, the street became a fitting tribute to Dickens’ legacy as 125 people ap-

plauded the unveiling of the Jacoby Dickens Way street sign that now bisects 87th street and fronts Seaway Bank. At the ceremony, there were speeches by various Chicago alderman, some of whom highlighted the achievements that Dickens spearheaded at Seaway Bank, now Chicago’s largest Black-owned bank and third most successful of its kind in the country. At the end of Jacoby’s life, Seaway had $547 million in assets. Dickens’ philanthropy earned him plum positions and prestige among Chicago’s most prominent institutions. A graduate of the now Wendell Phillips Academy, Chicago State University named their Physical Education and Athletics building after him when Dickens donated $1 million to the school. During his lifetime, Dickens gave the school a total of $1.7 million. Roderick Sawyer, Alderman of the city’s 6th Ward, said Dickens lived a life that deserved to be recognized in a big way. “I could not think of anyone more deserving of this honor than Jacoby,” he said. “He was such an iconic name in the community, “Sawyer said. Jacoby’s widow, Veranda Dickens, currently serves as chair of Seaway Bank. Veranda told the crowd that she wants to keep her late husband’s memory alive in the community. “I want children walking down 87th Street to ask who is Jacoby Dickens,” Veranda Dickens said. The dedication capped a morning of celebrations that included free barbeque, desserts, and music. There was also a live broadcast by WVON 1690 AM Radio. There were also performances by the South Shore Drill Dream. The event was emceed by retired Fox news anchor Robin Robinson. Rev. Jackson seeks 1,000 churches to set up tech centers Wants to educate youth on finances By Chinta Strausberg At his Rainbow PUSH minister’s breakfast, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. this week said he is seeking 1,000 churches in Chicago to set up tech centers in their churches so they can teach children about apps, codes, the stock market game, financial literacy and to learn how to save and invest rather than to spend and be greedy. Jackson said his agenda for the churches is to help reduce their foreclosures, using church outlets to be haven of rests for our children and training in their security. Rev. Jackson said there is also a great concern about the ratification of the Confederate Flag and the Confederation agenda. Jackson also spoke about the Voting Rights Act he says is under attack. In South Carolina, Jackson said one-fourth of that state is in poverty; yet they rejected $10 billion in Medicaid. He said the Black population is 25 percent; yet they are 75 percent of the prison population. “They lease prisons out to private corporations like slave labor,” he said. Referring to the killing of nine members of the Mother Emanuel African Methodist (A.M.E.) church by 21-year-old Dylann Roof, Jackson said, “Ironically, the killing at the church sets the climate in a significant way. “Are they embarrassed or remorseful? If they are remorseful, they will change the policy that created the climate, insecurity and fear.” 10

PUSH opens 44th convention with new tech lab for youth Silicon Valley opening doors for minorities By Chinta Strausberg Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. recently held his four-day convention at the Rainbow PUSH headquarters, 930 E. 50th St., with a ribbon cutting ceremony of his technology center where the public will have 24-hour access to computer experts who will help them fulfill their business plans and goals thanks to Apple and other tech companies. At a press conference held at PUSH, Rev. Jackson said there would be a focus on Silicon Valley, a need for a plan for urban development; focus on the growth of violence in the country and a renewed focus on education. Flanked by supporters including his son, Jonathan Jackson and Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Rep. G.K. Butterfield (DNC); Christina Alfaro, director of Diversity and Inclusion at McDonald’s; Pat Harris, Global Chief Diversity Officer for McDonald’s; Dr. Julianne Malveaux, president of PUSH Excel; Bishop Alfred Singleton, senior bishop of the Pentecostal churches of the Apostolic faith; Bishop Jerry L. Jones, Sr., Apostolic Assembly of Christ; Bishop Theodore Jackson, Genesis Community Church; and others, Rev. Jackson told reporters PUSH will spend a considerable time in Silicon Valley and will share the stock and meeting with Apple,

Amazon, Google, Twitter and Facebook. “What we found across the Valley were patterns of unacceptable exclusion.” Jackson said out of 89 board members at the top 20 companies, there were 36 white women, three African Americans and one Latino he called, “patterns of exclusion…” As shareholders, Jackson said they have the right to attend their meetings and “raise the concerns. We’re beginning to see some action, some movement taken place.” Jackson said HP is asking for people to see on their board. He said Apple “put up $50 million, $40 million going to Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. Intel put up $300 million.” Jackson was referring to Apple’s nearly $50 million that will benefit 47 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), according to a press release from the National Newspapers Publishing Association (NNPA). The funds will provide scholarships to students who are majoring in computer science, training for both students and faculty and to establish a paid internship program for hiring “promising” HBCU students at Apple. “They said they couldn’t find Black engineers. They were looking in the wrong places,” Jackson said explaining 40 percent of Black engineers come from HBCU. He said this pipeline is designed to “make their workforce look like America by 2020.” Denise Young Smith, Apple’s Human Resources chief, said the com-

Famuyiwa has previously directed “Our Family Wedding,” “Brown Sugar” and “The Wood.” He also has written the screenplay for “Talk to Me.” In “Dope,” which I believe is currently enjoying indie film status, he, along with co-producers Forest Whitaker and Pharrell Williams, knock this film out of the park, with messages abounding for many. In “Dope,” high-school senior Malcolm (Shameik Moore) and his friends Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) bond over ‘90s hip-hop culture, their studies and playing music in their own punk band. A chance encounter with a drug dealer named Dom lands Malcolm and company at the dealer’s nightclub birthday party; when the scene turns violent, they flee—with the Ecstasy that Dom secretly hid in Malcolm’s backpack. Criminal Justice Reform Movement Emerging in America By Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. While social change for some may appear to be inevitable, it does not happen by osmosis, and it does not occur without a focused effort led by those who are not restrained by the fears of social transformation. An effective reform of the system of laws, courts, policies and institutions defined as the criminal justice system in the United States of America requires more than a principled public debate. What is needed today with a renewed sense of urgency, beyond the all too frequent expressions of justifiable outrage and protest in response to videotaped incidents of police brutality, is a committed, bipartisan, well-resourced nationwide criminal justice reform movement. Black lives do matter. In fact all lives matter. As President and CEO of the nation’s oldest and largest trade association of African American owned newspapers, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), we reach over 20 million readers per week in aggregate circulation of 205 affiliated local and regional print and digital media companies. We hear the escalating cries of families and communities that have been devastated by the criminal justice system. The issues of mass incarceration, overcriminalization, prosecutorial and police misconduct, equal justice, alternative sentencing, recidivism and judicial dysfunction are all serious problems that are having a severe negative impact, in particular, on the quality of life of African Americans. What is required today, however, is a multiracial coalition to ensure that a successful reform movement is representative of the interests of all Americans. I know something about the movement-building process from my early days back in the 1960’s as a youth coordinator in my home state of North Carolina for The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Dr. King said it best when he affirmed, “An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Martin Luther King, Jr. was a master movement builder. I learned firsthand from the experience of witnessing how Dr. King fused together a diverse coalition of intergenerational leaders to effect change at the local, state and federal levels toward equal justice for all. Fifty years later we need to rebuild and expand the movement for change with respect to criminal justice. I also know profoundly what it is like to be unjustly sentenced 14

and incarcerated in a prison system that dehumanizes both the imprisoned and those who attempt to be in charge of vastly deteriorating overcrowded penal institutions. As a member of the Wilmington Ten civil rights activists who were unjustly imprisoned for a combined sentence of 282 years for standing up for the rights of equal education for African American students in Wilmington, NC in the 1970’s, I have experienced the systematic degradation and awful downward spiral of counterproductive institutional inhumanity. Today there are literally millions of people who not only want to see changes in the criminal justice system, but also are willing to join and support the emergence of a national “Criminal Justice Reform

Movement” (CJRM). Why am I encouraged now more than ever before about the potential to build and sustain an effective CJRM? The answer will probably surprise some of my colleagues in the Civil Rights Movement. My columns for the NNPA have always been about speaking truth to power in the vein of Frederick Douglass and W.E.B. Dubois, two historic publishers and leaders who knew the power of the print word and of the spoken word. Yet today, we must also dare to speak the truth to ourselves. We must participate in helping to build this important reform movement. We cannot afford to be silent or stand idle on the sidelines while others in earnest strive to make changes to a system that

will ultimately determine the quality of life in our communities for generations to come. Thus it is why without any hesitation that I am publicly stating my endorsement of the coalition building efforts of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), Charles Koch Institute and Koch Industries, Coalition for Public Safety, Center for American Progress, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, and other national and regional organizations that have committed to support various criminal justice reform efforts. I believe it is now a propitious time to work together to establish a national bipartisan re(Continued on page 16)

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Fighting for Love—fighting for our girls. It’s an age-old story—girls arguing over a boy. But far too often, an argument goes too far. Last year, it was an argument on Facebook between two 14-year-old girls who reportedly were once best friends, resulted in one killing the other with a .38 caliber handgun. Supposedly, the 14-year-old that pulled the trigger was given the gun by her 24year-old uncle. This devastating news sent shock waves throughout the Chicagoland community and personally ripped my heart. Girls and boys have been known to fight throughout time but this really got completely out of control. The end result was a life gone too soon and another life locked behind bars. This time it’s another battle of the boyfriend. A young woman, the first in her family to graduate from college with a 3.6 GPA killed a woman over a boyfriend.

tion. According to Olivia Moody, who shared her story from prison on how things took a downward spiral. She dated a guy that seemed to be nice and things appeared to be good until another young lady confronted her. According to Moody, the girl and her friends attacked her several times because they were man sharing or dating the same guy. In order to remedy being assaulted, Moody decided to get a gun to keep beneath her pillow for protection. However, after being bullied and jumped on once again, she fired the weapon with no intentions to kill, but sadly her actions resulted in murder. Now, this intelligent college graduate sits in a prison cell with a 30-year sentence staring her in the face. Both incidents, as well as hundreds more that will never make the news media involve our young girls. I firmly believe that if parEffie Rolfe ents teach their children self-valThis terrible incident happened a ue, love and worth from the mere five days after her gradua- womb perhaps senseless violence

such as this would be slim to none. Our children must understand that they are made in God’s image and likeness. When you believe that you are beautifully and wonderfully created by God then fighting over anyone is unacceptable. Unfortunately, I fear that too many of our youth as well as adult sisters don’t understand who or whose they are. Nothing or no one is ever worth fighting or arguing over point blank period! Let’s take this time to be proactive. Fathers teach your sons to respect women and mothers teach your daughters to love and respect themselves. Instead of our girls fighting for love and affection from others, let us begin to aggressively pray and teach children how valuable life is for all. Moms, dads, grandparents and the entire support system can all do more to lead, guide, protect and love our children. Let us continue to instill within each child the essence of character, integrity and the beauty of their souls. God has gifted each

of us with divine purpose and talents to be blessed as well as a blessing. This should be written in their hearts and echoed as fundamentals of life. Little girls really want an opportunity to just grow up and experience true love from their parents and friends. Unfortunately, for the girls in this story—the very love they sought— will never happen. You deserve so much more. Look in the mirror and know that you deserve God’s absolute best. The lesson for all of us is that ‘true love is serious business and you can only receive it by having a relationship with a loving Father.’ Do you know what love is ...? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. The Crusader Gospel Corner Fellowship Baptist Church was packed beyond capacity for the 90th birthday celebration for Rev. Clay Evans and the 85th birthday celebration for his sister Dr. LouDella Evans Reid. For over 60 years, Rev. Clay Evans has been a main staple of the church and Gospel music. A native of Brownsville, Tennessee, Evans relocated to Chicago, the mecca of Gospel music, answered the call to ministry in 1950 and organized the Fellowship Baptist Church in 1958. ‘The What a Fellowship Hour’ radio and television outreach fast became a Chicago tradition and brought the ministry of Rev. Clay Evans and the Ship into the homes of countless people across the globe. Together with the Fellowship Choir, 50 albums were released as he and the choir have appeared in churches and concert halls around the U.S., as well as abroad. On Sunday, friends and wellwishers including Pastor Charles Jenkins, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Jeannette Wilson, Bishop Ellis, Pastor DeAndre Patterson and more gathered for a musical celebration in honor of Rev. Dr. Clay Evans and his sister, Dr. LouDella Evans Reid (who served as Fellowship’s minister of music for 5 decades) on the eve of their 90th and 85th birthdays. “Reverend Clay Evans is a religious icon,” says master producer/songwriter and Fountain of Life Records CEO (and nephew) Pharis Evans, www.chicagocrusader.com

Rev. Clay Evans Jr. “He is an inspiration to so many. A man of great wisdom, candor and great humor, he motivates us to keep moving and trust God with everything. At 90, he can go into any church, anywhere on the planet on any given Sunday and simply say, ‘My, My, My’ or ‘Can I get a witness’ and the church will go in. We celebrate him for his tenacity, consistency and the drive the Lord gives him to continue the work in the vineyard.” Rev. Evans celebrated his 90th birthday on June 23. Chicago Public School future uncertain as negotiations looms (Cont’d from page 1) cerned how the recent school closings affected Black students. But while the defeat is viewed as a setback for Emanuel, CTU President Karen Lewis and thousands of teachers are focusing on hammering out a one-year contract by the end of the months, though many are unsure how CPS financial woes will affect the outcome of the negotiations. “Our labor agreement with the Board expires next Tuesday. Chicago’s public school educators are united in their belief that the $634 million payment must be made as required by law; that we receive a fair contract that will improve both

learning and working conditions in our buildings; and, that our schools must open in the fall,” said CTU spokesperson Stephanie Gadlin in a statement. Those demands were also expressed during a massive demonstration Downtown on June 9 at the James R. Thompson Center where thousands of teachers protested during their Rally for a Just Chicago. Here, they urged CPS to impose a moratorium on additional school closings, limits on standardized tests, enforcement on class sizes and racial equality for students. Meanwhile educators and administrators are speaking out against Emanuel’s handpicked appointees on the

Chicago Board of Education. They include Gail Ward, who worked for 35 years in the Chicago Public Schools system and was the first principal of Walter Payton College Preparatory High School; Mark Furlong, retired CEO of BMO Harris Bank and former CEO of Marshall & Ilsley Bank; the Reverend Michael Garanzini, retiring president of Loyola University Chicago and Dominique Jordan Turner, president and CEO of the Chicago Scholars Foundation, which provides college scholarships to underprivileged students. On June 25 just before press time at the Chicago Crusader, the Chicago Board of Education approved by a

5-0 vote about $1.1 billion in funds for CPS. The funds will be boroowed against future tax revenues. The new appointees replaced their predecessors who included Deborah Quazzo, founder and managing partner of brokerage firm GSV Advisors, Andrea Zopp, president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League, Henry Bienen, former president of Northwestern University, and Carlos Azcoitia, another former CPS principal. But critics argue that in overhauling the Board,

Street named after Seaway Bank’s Jacoby Dickens (Cont’d from page 9) a loan I didn’t get,” he said. “When President Jimmy Carter was president, many Blacks could not get business loans.” Another client at the cere-

mony, retired Alderman Dorothy Tillman, remembered when Dickens approved her loan soon after she got married in 1967. “Seaway taught us a lot about giving back to the community and Black eco-

nomic empowerment,” she said. Because of The Great Recession, Seaway has suffered losses in recent years. But on Friday, Veranda said the bank is surviving tough times. She reminded the crowds of the

bank’s resilience and recalled how her husband compared Seaway to a lion. “Seaway is wild and aggressive and willing to take on new ideas,” she said. “And get ready to hear us roar.”

Criminal Justice Reform Movement Emerging in America (Cont’d from page 14) form movement. I was very interested and encouraged to learn that Koch Industries has been involved in the issues of overcriminalization and criminal justice reform for years. Yet many of my colleagues in the Civil Rights Movement were relatively unaware of this fact. Reforming the criminal justice system is not a concern to

be constrained to the left or to the right on the political spectrum. The respect for the moral dignity and wellbeing of every person, without the filter of race, class, religion or any other discriminating factor, is a paramount principle that has to be maintained in a society that strives to strengthen the inclusiveness of its democracy. The current

social and political polarization concerning criminal justice reform is not healthy for our nation. What is healthy is the budding bipartisan reform movement that is now emerging. Now is the right time. Now is the right moment to raise our voices and join forces together to build and sustain the Criminal Justice Reform Movement.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Cont’d from page 4) way and Illinois Federal Service Bank. It is ironic that Seaway just celebrated its 50th year of being in business and this news is hanging over their heads. Both of them are operating under a federal consent order. For several years we have watched the number of Black-owned banks here and across the country grow smaller. It would be beyond a tragedy if we were to lose either of these two. It hasn’t been that long since three others – Covenant Bank, Shore Bank and Highland Community Bank fell by the wayside. 16

Since 1987, three-quarters of the nation’s 91 AfricanAmerican banks have disappeared from what I can tell through my readings and conversations with friends there is probably time for the community to help both banks. It seems strange but if all of us were to start doing business with these banks it would not help strengthened them that much. What we need to do is start calling on our aldermen and state legislators to ensure that government dollars are being deposited into both institutions. These are the kinds of investments that steady a bank’s bottom line. We also need to show

these bankers we, the general Black public, is interested in doing business with them for home loans. So many Black people belong to churches and we definitely need to talk to church leaders about becoming investors in either or both of these banks. When you look at the location of their oper-

ations, you can see there are probably a dozen churches within one mile of each headquarters or branch. Churches can do a lot more to help the community beyond their walls and doing business with Illinois Federal and/or Seaway is an excellent way to start. Tyrone Hall

Emanuel has changed very little because the new members have similar backgrounds as their predecessors. They say the four new members are very closely connected to the privatization of public education, and support the expansion of charter schools. “While these appointments appear to be a shift toward individuals connected to education, a closer look at their backgrounds shows even deeper connections to continued efforts at privatizing our schools,” said CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey in a

Ombudsman Chicago Celebrates . . . (Cont’d from page 10) “I was feeling so agitated, I had so much energy and I did not know what to do with myself,” said Wright. “I heard about Ombudsman from someone at church, and I told myself that I was not going to dwell on the past, and that I was going to graduate in 2015 – once I set those goals, I felt like I had a purpose again.” To reach her goals, Destiny worked around the clock, attending double sessions every day at Ombudsman and continuing to work from home, well into the evening. Following graduation, Destiny will take some time to focus on working, saving for college and applying for scholarships. With a love of writing and of music, Destiny hopes to one day earn a bachelor’s degree in music production and a master’s degree in business management. Ombudsman honored these graduates and others during a graduation ceremony held on June 9 at Holy Trinity High School in Chicago.

Walgreens offering free HIV screenings By J. Coyden Palmer According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), African Americans still have the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate than any other race in the nation. To try to stop that trend, Walgreens is teaming up with a local advocacy group, Greater Than AIDS, to offer free HIV screenings later this month at various locations throughout the Chicago area. The three-days of testing will lead up to June 27, which is National HIV Testing Day. Despite educating the public about HIV/AIDS for over 20 years, African Americans still are more at risk of contracting the disease, which attacks the body’s immune system and is spread through blood, unprotected sex and the sharing of needles amongst drug users. According to the CDC, African Americans accounted for an estimated 44 percent of all new HIV infections among adults and adolescents (aged 13 years and older) in 2010, despite representing only 12 percent of the U.S. population, considering the smaller size of the African American population in the United States, this represents a population rate that is eight times that of whites overall. Adding to those alarming statistics, Black men accounted for 70 percent (14,700) of the estimated 20,900 new HIV infections among all adult and adolescent African Americans. The estimated rate of new HIV infections for

African American men was seven times that of white men, twice that of Latino men, and nearly three times that of African American women, according to the CDC data. Glen Pietrandoni, Walgreens senior director of virology said there are multiple reasons why Black men are leading the list and they are mostly cultural and a lack of access to healthcare in many areas. Pietrandoni said collaborations between government agencies and corporations to promote HIV awareness and to make testing affordable has been an effective way of reaching many people in neighborhoods that lack healthcare. “This is going to be our biggest year yet as we expect to test at least 10,000 people around the nation in our fifth year of this program,” Pietrandoni said. “The CDC has great data all the way down to the zip code in terms of where we are seeing new infections and if you combine that with a lot of other data that is available, we can tell which areas have people who know and don’t know their status. That’s what we want to do with this program, give people their status and then link them to care so they can get the treatment they need.” Healthcare workers say getting people into treatment immediately after learning their status is key to a person being able to manage the disease effectively. That is why counselors will be on-hand at all of the testing centers. And with the advances in HIV medicines,
