Millionaire volunteers at youth organization By Wendell Hutson Little did Diane Latiker, a community activist, know that when Steve Kaplan volunteered to work at her youth organization in September that he also had a hidden agenda. Kaplan, who is white and a millionaire, not only volunteered at Latiker’s “Kids Off the Block Inc.” organization for a week, but also stayed in a one-bedroom apartment around the corner from the organization at 11627 S. Michigan Ave. He also lived off a $50 week allowance. “I had no idea who this guy was at all. I was shocked when I learned the truth about him,” Latiker told the Crusader. “I was completely caught off guard by Mr. Kaplan, who is truly an angel in disguise.” Now the whole world can see just how Kaplan fooled Latiker and the hundreds of Black youth her non-profit organization serves on the latest episode of “Secret Millionaire” when it airs at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 1 on the ABC network. And Latiker is inviting everyone to come watch the show with her and her “kids” at a viewing party held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 1 at Moe’s Catina, 155 W. Kinzie St. The viewing party is also a fundraiser for the organization, which currently is not receiving any funding and operates solely “on a prayer,” confesses Latiker. Disappointing turnout at Red Line meetings By J. Coyden Palmer Two meetings were sparsely attended last week on the city’s South Side. The community meetings to inform residents about next year’s five-month project that will completely shut down the Red Line, had been advertised in the media for a week. But at the first meeting on June 18 at the South Shore Cultural Center only 30 residents attended. Attendance was a bit better three days later at Kennedy-King College. CTA officials say the meetings are important not only to disseminate information, but to get community feedback. “I would have liked to have had a better turnout, but I think as we get closer to the actual shutdown date next year, there will be more interest,” said CTA Chairman of the Board Terry Peterson. Community activist Wallace “Gator” Bradley responded to the chairman’s comments by saying citizens are tired of not being a part of the planning process until it is

too late. He said holding community meetings two weeks after a plan is announced is not engaging the community. “Why is it that we always have to find out what the CTA is doing when it is announced in the newspapers or on TV?” Bradley asked. “When you do it like this, you all have already decided what you’re going to do and you’re shoving it down the community’s throat. That’s why a lot of people don’t come to these meetings because they figure it has already been decided what will be done.” Karen Youngblood of the Black United Front of Illinois had similar concerns. She asked for a “white paper” comment period on the project where citizens can read the frequently asked questions because different meeting locations may have different questions. “I think a comment period that the general public can comment on certain things (Continued on page 2)

Popular beach reopens after two-year makeover By Wendell Hutson After two years of construction on a popular South Side beach the Chicago Park District recently reopened the 31st Street Harbor with new amenities for residents, as well as new jobs. The $103 million makeover created for the first time 1,000 floating slips (a slot along the dock attached to the shoreline); 679 parking spaces including an indoor parking garage (previously there were no configured parking spaces and drivers would park atwill); green roof with landscaped park land for strolling; picnic areas shaded by three, large sails, which offers beautiful views of the lake and skyline; a newly configured bike and walking path; an on-site, seasonal restaurant; a snack and boating supply shop; and a community room available also for rental.
Parking is a major change. To balance its budget and help pay for summer programs the Chicago Park District has done away with free parking at its beaches. So residents will pay $6 to park for two-hours indoor at the 31st Street beach on weekdays and $8 on weekends. Outside parking spaces have pay boxes, which charge $1 per hour. Park district officials said residents could expect a rewarding experience when they now visit the 31st Street Harbor, which is located in Chicago’s Fourth Ward represented by Alderman Will Burns. “The Chicago Park District welcomes visitors at all of the 23 swimming beaches along the 26 miles of lakefront,” said Marta Juaniza, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Park District. “Visitors to 31st Street Beach can experience new amenities that are

According to Juaniza, the district is looking to hire especially from nearby South Side communities like Bronzeville and Hyde Park for attendants, maintenance, clerical, and security positions. Meteorologists are forecasting a heat wave this week with temperatures expected to reach up to 100 degrees this week making the re-opening more timely. “I always come here to walk the path and sit on the beach to relax,” said Norman Patterson, a retired 65-year-old U.S. Postal
worker. “I live in Bronzeville and with all the upgrades this is now the best Chicago beach. I can see downtown, ride my bike to Navy Pier along the bike path, swim or bring my grand kids to play in the play lot. This place is a family dream house.” Donna Richardson, 31, is a single parent of a five-year-old daughter and likes to bring her to play in the kiddie sprinkler. “It is not a lot of knuckle heads up here spoiling it for the kids like at other beaches. I can come here with my daughter and have a good time and not have to worry about thugs walking around with their pants hanging off their butt or people walking pit bulls without a leash,” she said. Prior to the new construction at 31st Street Beach the most common sight was teenagers and
young adults drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, blasting loud music from their cars, selling drugs, and even prostitution, recalled James Simon, 49. “I know because I use to be one of those guys hanging out up here doing nothing constructive. I would come here with my buddies to pick up females, smoke ‘weed’ and drink beer,” he said. “I can remember seeing guys having sex in their cars too. With their girlfriends, females they just met at the beach and prostitutes. I am glad to see they cleaned this place up.” Chicago Park District Superintendent Michael Kelly is also happy about bad elements no longer existing at the beach and hopes the community enjoys the new amenities.

is time for an upgrade.” Some residents at the meeting asked why the CTA has not extended the Red Line out to 130th street. Peterson explained that this project is directly related to that long-term plan. Peterson
would be great to get our input,” Youngblood said. Earlier this month the CTA announced a multimillion-dollar project that will begin in May of 2013 on its busiest transit line. Many in the community were upset with the plan saying it would be too disruptive. The plan calls for the complete replacement of all the tracks on the line, in addition to a new drain, age system. The new rails will allow the agency to also use new, faster and energy-efficient rail cars that will transport commuters boarding at 95th street to the Loop in 20 minutes. Peterson said Red Line trains should be able to travel at 55 mph, but due to the poor conditions of the tracks, trains are often forced to

We and how did conditions get so think it is time to do something bad,” Peterson said. “We spend about it. It’s an old system and it

NEWS Pfleger tells parish not to patronize stores that refuse to hire Blacks You give them your money, but they can’t hire you? By Chinta Strausberg Saying he is serious, Father Michael L. Pfleger Sunday told his congregation not to patronize certain stores in the Auburn-Gresham community including a Phillip’s 66 gas station because the owners allegedly refuse to hire Blacks from the community, they sell loose cigarettes and one stocks expired food. Referring to the gas station at 79th and Ashland, Pfleger said the owner allegedly sells loose cigarettes to minors, which is against the law, and the owner has not hired an African American from the community. “Don’t you ever buy gas” at that station, he told the church. Pfleger also asked them not to patronize the store at 79th and Marshfield for the same reasons. Pfleger was particularly upset with the owners of the newly opened “Express Food Mart” located at 77th and Racine. Last Fri-
day, he and 200 supporters visited the store. Pfleger told the manager that the owner had promised to hire an African American. Pfleger and Sal, the nephew of the owner, went toe-to-toe over the hiring of a Black with Sal saying he couldn’t find one who wanted to work. Pfleger had Lisa Ramsey, his director of Employment Resources, with him. He promised to have at least five African American applicants for the owner to choose from otherwise he promised to shut down the store. While he was talking to Sal and to the owner on the cell phone, supporters found three jars of mayonnaise and sandwich spread that were outdated along with some products dating back to 2011 and hotdogs that said “sell before June 12, 2012.” “I do not know why we go and put our money in stores that disrespect” the community. Pfleger said the gangbangers hang out in these stores giving them their money but while they want a job the owners of these stores will not hire them “so they can take care of their families, but we give them our money so they can take care of their families.”
FATHER MICHAEL L. PFLEGER Friday told a representative of the Express Food Mart, 77th and Racine, he had better stop selling loose cigarettes, drug paraphernalia, out-dated food and if he didn’t hire a Black from the community, he will shut them down. State Senator Jacqueline Collins looks on. (Photo by Chinta Strausberg) Pfleger will be going back to the “Express Food Mart” Monday, June 25, 2012, armed with applications of Blacks wanting to work. Disappointing turnout (Continued from page 2) ture in place needed to eventually extend the Red Line, which has been talked about in Chicago for over 20 years. Senior citizen William Scott said he rides the Red Line every day and said he is very concerned about security on the route. He asked CTA officials what type of new safety and security resources will be in place once construction is done. He suggested more highdefinition cameras and a larger presence of police on platforms and trains. CTA President Forrest Claypool responded to Scott’s question by saying last year the CTA did install 3,000 high definition cameras system-wide and credits the cameras with catching several suspects recently who robbed CTA customers on the Green Line. Added Peterson: “Once the project is completed next October, we will be able to bring over the new 5000 series train cars and on those, each individual car will be equipped with its own camera system.” Dennis Johnston of Hyde Park said he is concerned about the timeline for the project. He said many people can live with the five month plan but want guarantees there will be no delays or cost overruns. Claypool responded by saying there are stringent penalties in place for contractors
who do not complete the work on time. He said there will also be oversight throughout the course of the project with daily updates to CTA administrators to prevent any last minute surprises for riders. Peterson said the CTA will offer a fare discount of 50 cents throughout the construction period for riders in the affected areas. The CTA also plans to use shuttle buses that will run 24 hours from the Red Line to the nearby Green Line to help ease the pain for riders. There will also be another set of shuttle buses to move passengers between Red Line stops. Claypool said the CTA is also working with METRA and Pace on a deal that would possibly allow CTA fare cards to be used on those systems as well. Andrea Zopp of the Chicago Urban League said the series of community meetings the CTA are holding are vital for a smooth transition during the construction period. She said the Red Line is used primarily by African Americans and the system runs through the heart of the Black community. The Urban League is partnering with the CTA on the project to ensure that the investment dollars will result in business and job opportunities for African American firms and residents.

OPINION
EDITORIAL SHACKLED BY THE PAST It’s not surprising that with years of discrimination and economic violence in America, Black people can see the tentacles of racism everywhere. And if the responses to various and sundry items shown in online “comment” sections is to be counted, it’s apparent that almost everyone sees things in black and white. It’s no wonder then, that things bearing a more obvious symbolic connection with the painful American past experienced by African Americans, such as shackles, can brew a firestorm of controversy. Such is the case of the “shackle” sneakers designed by Jeremy Scott and put on the market by adidas. According to an online Los Angeles Times article by Rene Lynch, critics of the adidas “shackle” sneakers need to get a sense of humor. The designer, Jeremy Scott, says “a jagged-toothed plushy toy wearing orange handcuffs was the inspiration behind the sneaker design, not slavery.” Moreover, “My work has always been inspired by cartoons, toys & my childhood,” Scott said in a statement released by his representative on Twitter. According to this same representative, Scott’s whimsical work has included “riffs on Bart Simpson, Barbie, Snoopy, Miss Piggy, Mickey Mouse and other icons related to children’s toys and cartoons.” This particular shoe was supposedly inspired by “My Pet Monster,” a 1980s toy that featured a blue monster shackled with orange plastic handcuffs. According to legends about the toy, the monster sprang to life when the shackles were removed. Though all of this may be true, the fact of the matter is that African Americans are easily bruised by a symbol that has a great and painfully historic meaning: shackles on slave ships, and today, shackles in jails and prisons. The current mass incarceration of African Americans– the new slavery, highlights the fact that this pain is still very much present. The shackle sneaker issue is just one more barb throwing salt into African American wounds. The shackle sneaker issue is a glaring example of the differences between Black people and others when it comes to race. Currently, African Americans are the only ones on these shores that were forcibly brought here and have endured years of degradation. The beat continues. It’s no wonder, then, that Black people would rise up in indignation around a symbol of what has been an integral part of a very difficult history. Jeremy Scott and his defenders just don’t get it, probably because they have not had to live with a legacy of chattel slavery so cruel that even today the gaping wounds have found many ways to bleed. Interestingly, a loud outcry from the Black community was enough to encourage adidas to discontinue the design. If anything, this marketing adventure has fallen victim to an irresistible, unified voice. It’s ironic that the shackle sneaker debacle is snapping at the heels of the upcoming Independence Day. The juxtaposition of the notion of freedom and the issue of a shackle sneaker presents great food for thought. And one thing that it brings forth is the fact that true freedom will come when the Black community resists oppression from outside of the community AND from within it. The fact that adidas pulled this product is an indication, hopefully, that people are beginning to understand that “freedom ain’t free,” and that unified actions can result in victory. A luta continua.
The mayor has taken a pretty bold step and suggested that people holding small amounts of marijuana be ticketed and not arrested. Now the mayor is making it seem like a big deal, but folks living on the South Side and the West Side will tell you they see people smoking pot regularly and the cops just roll on by. But the mayor is making it sound like there is a concentrated effort to find and arrest people smoking/carrying weed. That just ain’t the case. Sure if they stop you and you are carrying they probably won’t ignore it, but they aren’t out looking for it. All of that give residents the impression that cops are taken away from fighting real crime because they are on the hunt for 15 grams of weed. And how many joints that makes depends solely on who’s rolling it. Crime fighting is not getting short shrift because the cops are tracking down folks with less than $300 worth of pot. Crime fighting in our community isn’t getting done because that is the history of the department where Black people live. Users and court observers already have been quoted as saying the amount the 15-gram target usually gets tossed in court cases

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rahm has it right, sort of Dear Editor:
– a waste of time for the arrest, the defendant and the cops. If the mayor and his puppet Superintendent McCarthy were interested in less crime they would do more than give lip service to all of the shootings occurring in the community. Has anyone noticed that the city council has had more opinions on this pot proposal than they did on the budget? At the end of last week, barely half of the council members said they would back the marijuana measure— even the mayor’s “floor leader” was not fully endorsing it. But when it was time to pass the budget, the council was in lock step with the mayor. The vote was 500. The council raises some good points about field weighing and testing the pot, how steep the fines ought to be, and not arresting people with no identification. I don’t know if the council is choosing this issue to stand up to the mayor or if there is some reason it piques their interest. Chicago has many, many problems more serious than potheads and those are the ones the council and mayor should give the most attention to.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
When we Took Indianapolis Public Schools By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist The Hoosier Minority Chamber of Commerce was in a groove. We defeated the discriminatory game played by United Air Lines and the State of Indiana. Our relations with Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith were great. Contracting for Black-owned businesses in the city was growing immensely. I had to think hard as to what might be the next opportunity. Then we got the news Dr. Shirl Gilbert was going to become Superintendent for Indianapolis Public Schools District. He would be the first Black school superintendent in the city. We met with Dr. Gilbert and got the strong feeling that he was ready to make big changes. That gave us the confidence to move forward. The IPS Board was comprised of four Blacks and three whites. As we went on it was determined that since we were developing our construction contractors and recruiting major Black firms to put offices in Indianapolis, construction should be the starting point. We met with the IPS Business Manager, Rodney Black. As we sat down, I said to Mr. Black “It is time
Harry C. Alford for IPS to hire a Construction Management firm.” He replied, “There are no Black Construction Management firms!” OK, it appears that we are going to have to play hardball. I suggested a follow up with me and two bona fide and qualified Black construction firms. Two weeks later we met again. I brought in Powers & Sons Construction based in Gary, Indiana. They were represented by their CEO Mamon Powers Jr. The other firm was Batteast Construction based in South Bend, Indiana and
Robert Batteast Jr. represented them. These multi-generational firms were high quality but they had been blocked from doing business in Indianapolis until we started our advocacy. Mr. Black was reticent as they made their presentations. As they closed I “dropped” this on the guy: “Mr. Black you have been exclusively hiring a firm that is smaller than both of these firms and less qualified. Plus that IPS is being charged 5% of cost which is far greater than the market rate of 3%. The Board is not going to like that.” He looked enraged as I continued, “Listen here! Dr. Shirl Gilbert becomes Superintendent on February 14, 1992 and you will have given the next Construction Management contract to a Black firm. I don’t care which one but they must be Black and I have just put two Black firms right before your eyes. If you don’t hire a firm by that time, I will seek your firing. That’s right your job depends on this.” On the morning of February 14, I got a call from Mamon Powers. He happily said, “Your style worked! Rodney Black just called me and said be at his office by 2:00 PM to sign the next Construction Manage-
ment contract.” Dr. Gilbert was being sworn in at 5:00PM and Mr. Black was no fool after all. We broke the “ice” and now was the time to seize the procurement giant known as Indianapolis Public Schools District. Dr. Gilbert came in with a roar. The District just budgeted fourteen schools for major renovation and he proposed a brilliant idea. The architectural and construction management contracts for these fourteen schools would be delivered through one massive competition. The top two firms in each category would get seven schools each and all firms were invited to participate in the competition. There were 32 construction companies in the competition and half as many architectural firms. The selection committee was predominantly Black. They should be as the school district was about 75% Black – it’s only fair. We were all excited about the possibility. Powers had a pretty good advantage as he was now doing such work for IPS. The times were very tense until the winners were announced. For Construction Management: #1 was SR Smoot Construction, a Black-owned firm out of Columbus, Ohio and #2 was Pow-
ers & Sons and for Architecture: #1 was Blackburn Architects, a Blackowned firm locally based and #2 was Woods Architects, another local Black owned firm. We slam dunked them! The white establishment, especially the White contractors, were livid. They tried to influence the School Board which had to approve the selections. Their vote went down along racial lines 4 – 3 our favor. The school headquarters was standing room only when the final vote made by Superintendent Gilbert was to be announced. Dr. Gilbert looked at everyone in the room and finally spoke, “This school system has been conducting business for over 80 years and has never had a construction management firm or architectural firm manage a complete project. I stand here today to say that this practice has come to an end. I approve the recommended choices.” Victory was ours! We now had a Black school district acting responsibly. Mitt Romney Gets a Free Pass By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist One of the most remarkable things about Mitt Romney’s run for the White House is that the presumptive Republican nominee is allowed to attack President Obama on everything from saving the automobile industry to immigration. Yet, the news media rarely point out that Romney is against many things, especially if proposed by President Obama, but is usually evasive on what he is for. In a departure from the business-as-usual coverage, Politico published a story Sunday under the headline: “Mitt Romney’s nopolicy problem.” It stated, “Vague, general or downright evasive policy prescriptions on some of the most important issues facing the country are becoming the rule for Romney. Hoping to make the campaign strictly a referendum on the incumbent, the hyper-cautious challenger is open about his determination to not give any fodder to Obama aides hungry to make the race as much about Romney as the president.” The most recent example involves President Obama’s position on the Dream Act, an acronym for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors. After Congress failed to pass a bill sponThe Chicago Crusader
George E. Curry sored by Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) Orrin Hatch [R-Utah], President Obama issued an executive order that incorporated many of the provisions of the bill. Under the executive order, people younger than 30 who came to the United States before they were 6 years old, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation. “This is not amnesty. This is not immunity. This is not a path to citizenship. It’s not a permanent fix,” Obama said upon signing the executive order. “This is a temporary stopgap measure.” Speaking to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), Obama
said, “When I meet these young people, all throughout communities, I see myself. Who knows what they might achieve. I see my daughters, and my nieces, and my nephews. That’s the promise that draws so many talented, driven people to these shores. That’s the promise that drew my own father here,” said Obama, whose father was from Kenya. Appearing before the same group a day earlier, Romney said, “I will put in place my own long-term solution that will replace and supersede the president’s temporary measure.” And what is Romney’s long-term solution? We don’t know because he isn’t saying. Romney, with the media acting as a willing accomplice, has also lambasted Obama on gasoline prices. In an interview on FOX News, Romney said there is “no question” that Obama was responsible for high gas prices. But everyone knows that a sitting president has about as much control over gasoline prices as a meteorologist has over the weather. The federal Energy Information Center breaks down the cost of a gallon of regular gasoline this way: the cost of crude oil accounts for 76 percent, refining expenditures and profits are responsible for another 6 percent; distribution marketing and retail costs add 6 percent and taxes
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
contribute 12 percent. That reality notwithstanding, Romney was able to gain media coverage by pretending that President Obama, not market factors, dictates the price of gasoline. The price of a gallon of regular gasoline peaked at $3.97 in April. But that figure has since fallen to $3.41, a decline of 56 cents per gallon, according to the AAA. If Obama was at fault for the steep increase in gasoline prices, shouldn’t he now get credit for tumbling prices? Romney can’t have it both ways. Finally, I don’t think a candidate’s religion should be fair game in most instances. That’s why I objected to the media trying to Velcro the outspoken Rev. Jeremiah Wright to candidate Barack Obama. Similarly, I have advised against focusing on Romney’s Mormonism during this presidential election – he has so many positions that make him vulnerable in November. The Obama camp should focus on his position –when Romney takes them – not his religion. But if the media is going to hold Obama responsible for the statements of Rev. Wright, then in the interest of fairness, Romney should be asked what he did to repudiate the church’s former teachings. Although there were two Black priests under Mormon founder Joseph Smith, his successor, Saturday, June 30, 2012
Brigham Young, instituted a policy of excluding males of African descent from the priesthood. In 1949, he said, “What chance is there for the redemption of the Negro? The Lord had cursed Cain’s seed with blackness and prohibited them the Priesthood.” That policy remained in place until 1978. Although religion is a deeply personal matter, you can bet your 2008 “Barack Obama for President” campaign button that Republicans will resurrect Jeremiah Wright’s comments this fall. And they will do it close to Election Day. Political maneuvering aside, journalists have a responsibility to press Romney to move past his carefully studied talking points. And they can do that by forcing him to share what he plans to do beyond criticizing President Obama. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
33rd ANNUAL NATIONAL NBUF CONVENTION (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill The National Black United Front (NBUF) has reached an historic point in its history. That point in its history, is the convening of the 33rd Annual National NBUF Convention that will be held July 12-14, 2011 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters Hall, 7717 West Good Hope Road. This year’s convention theme is: “The Year of the African woman: A Spirit Unbroken.” The National Black United Front, over a thirty-three-year period, has related to, and organized around, numerous issues that have
impacted on the African World Community. Whether it was combating the numerous cases of police brutality in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other urban centers, NBUF was there. Whether it was fighting to save people from the death penalty in Texas and Chicago, NBUF was there. NBUF has constantly challenged the racist and white supremacists public policy positions of the Criminal Justice System and to that end our Prison Correspondence Program keeps us in contact with our sisters and brothers behind the walls throughout America. NBUF was at the forefront of the Free South Africa Movement and played a leading role in forcing economic sanctions against South Africa’s Apartheid regime. Our picketing of entertainers who were on the South African Entertainers Hit List for performing in South Africa, against the will of the movement in South Africa, brought great public attention to the plight of our brothers and sisters in that region of the world. Our work with the New Jewel Movement in Grenada was significant. Whether it was the Summer Work Study Project, working on the runway at the airport or volunteering in the schools, NBUF was there. In our international work, the Commission on Women’s Issues of NBUF organized a delegation of NBUF sisters who attended the United Nations World Conference on Women, held in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 10-19, 1985. The NBUF sisters made a significant contribution at this conference by
networking with African women from all over the world and presenting a paper on “The Presence of African Women in America.” NBUF was there for Jesse Jackson’s presidential runs in 1984 and 1988, and the successful mayoral bids of African in America in Chicago, New York, St, Louis, Kansas City, and Houston in the 1980s. NBUF participated in other electoral campaigns for seats in Congress and state offices in several districts around the country. In fact, one of our own, Rev. Jew Don Boney won a council seat in Houston, Texas. NBUF member, Lee Barnes successfully won a school board seat on the same board in Kansas City, Missouri. NBUF played a key role in the efforts to organize the African American Leadership Summit in 1994. NBUF members were key organizers in the historic Million Man March in October of 1995. On the education front, over the past twenty years, NBUF has been, and continues to be, the key grassroots organizers in the African Centered Education Movement. Our World African Centered Education Plan is a model for addressing the various areas of education. As a response to revelations that the CIA was involved in the explosion of crack/cocaine in the African Communities in America in the summer of 1996, NBUF launched a historic Genocide Petition Campaign Against the United States Government. This Genocide Petition Campaign produced over 200,000 signatures and in May 1997, the NBUF led delegation
traveled to the United Nations Human Rights Center in Geneva, Switzerland, and presented these petitions and other evidence on behalf of African people in America. Out of our successful Genocide Campaign, NBUF collaborated with the December 12th Movement that organized the Durban 400 to participate and helped successfully lobby the United Nations World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) to declare that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery were Crimes Against Humanity in the summer of 2001. As a follow-up to our successful participation in this conference, NBUF continued to collaborate with the December 12th Movement in organizing the Millions For Reparations Rally that was held August 17, 2002 in Washington, D.C. where over 50,000 African people attended from 38 states, 67 cities, and viewed by millions on CSPAN. In the spring of 2003, NBUF National Chairman, Dr. Conrad W. Worrill, requested that Minister Louis Farrakhan convene a meeting of the key reparations organizers, activists, researchers, scholars, and spiritual workers. This meeting occurred in July 2003 at the Salaam Restaurant in Chicago and out of that meeting the NDABA Movement unfolded. On September 13, 2003, NBUF joined the Millions For Reparations Rally at the United Nations in New York and helped to link the Reparations Movement with the Pan African struggle worldwide. The NDABA Movement meetings were convened in October 2003 in
Jackson, Mississippi, and in March 2004 in Houston, Texas. This process has greatly helped strengthen the unity in the Reparations Movement in America. Through the NDABA Movement process, NBUF Chairman Worrill proposed the establishment of a Reparations Petition Campaign that was adopted by the NDABA forces with the goal of securing one million signatures by the fall presidential election. Since our inception, NBUF has consistently sponsored a variety of cultural programs throughout the United States, including our Frontlines Album Project, our sponsorship of annual Kwanzaa Programs, and African Liberation Day activities. This has been a major part of NBUF’s work. Through our Frontline Newsletter, Front Page Newspaper, NBUF’s website, e-mail, letters, phone calls, and the traditional grapevine, NBUF communicates with the world. Most importantly, in our organizing efforts, NBUF has maintained strict financial independence, and has recently become a certified organization with the National Black Federation of Charities, an arm of the National Black United Fund, Inc. We are now able to receive donations through payroll deduction from people in the federal workplace throughout the world. We encourage everyone to attend this year’s historic NBUF Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. For more information call: 414324.5792 or e-mail: nbufchi@sbcglobal.net.
Taking care of those who take care of us Ai-Jen Poo, a powerful and passionate advocate for the rights of domestic workers, leads the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Who are these folks? They are the private household workers (maids) who propped up inept women in the movie, The Help. They are the home health aides who take care of our elders when they are ill or disabled, bringing them meals, bathing them, and accompanying them to medical appointments. They are the nannies that care for children when parents are working. In some ways, they are a backbone of our economy, and yet they often have neither voice nor money.
I was struck by the situation of domestic workers when I heard Ai-Jen at the National Council for Research on Women’s annual
conference. While some of us focus mostly on race, she is more likely to focus on class and the many ways that public policy is made from an extremely privileged perspective. The women who stitch together a living by working two and three domestic jobs certainly don’t have the time to put their situation in context with public policy. And those who make public policy have only limited exposure to those who have to live it. Ai-Jen and the National Domestic Workers Alliance bridge that gap. The organization started in 2007, and now has representation in more than 20 states. In New York, NDWA was instrumental in the passage of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights that

went into effect in November 2010. It requires that people who work in other people’s homes for 40 hours a week or more (except for relatives and casual employees such as babysitters) must be paid the minimum wage, must receive overtime pay, vacation time, workers’ compensation and disability benefits. One might assume that some of these benefits are already written into law, and in some ways they are. But domestic workers are more likely to be treated as casual workers than as professionals, and if they are working full-time, they must be treated as professionals. Listening to Ai-Jen Poo was like a blast from the past for me. My early academic work focused on private household workers. Al-
though the Minimum Wage Act was passed during the Depression, private household workers and farm workers were excluded form the legislation until 1974. Even then, the law had so many loopholes that few adhered to it. At the same time, failure to abide by the law has tanked many a nominee for a federal appointment. Judge Kimball Wood comes to mind as a capable jurist who was snagged by her failure to take Social Security taxes out of the wages of her full-time housekeeper. Ai-Jen’s presentation reminded me how little has changed for private household workers. There are employers who deduct from low wages if there is breakage in (Continued on page 16) The Chicago Crusader

wanted to take time to try to save his marriage. Now, without a doubt his marriage is probably teetering on the brink of collapse after it was revealed that he had a white “social acquaintance” and that this same man who was going to raise or give the money to the Governor brought her to Chicago for Junior and her to have a rendezvous. Now Ima is with Sandi if she has thoroughly reamed out his insides, ‘cause it is an insult to her that he would seek the companionship of a “waitress” no less and she is a lawyer. Needless to say Sandi ain’t no slouch in the looks department either. But you know the slave mentality of most Black men, they want a Cadillac and a white woman. And to bring her to Chicago for this tryst (for sure Chicago is Sandi’s turf), instead of keeping her in D.C. Junior ain’t as smart as he would have us believe. Now he may be tired and he may be having some trouble sitting down from that behind kicking, but Ima believes it is not the major reason for his sudden disappearance. Ima believes that Junior is trying to figure out a way to keep from joining Gubner Blago in the slammer. So exhaustion, butt kicking or scared to death, Ima believes it is the latter. Let’s just hope that his plans do not
The recent announcement that Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. was taking a medical leave of absence because of exhaustion left more questions than answers for most folks. Ima thinks that it would have been less suspicious if he had taken a leave shortly after the election in March and most of us who saw him campaign for the first time he has campaigned, would have thought he was just
dead tired. Not only tired, but relieved that he was able to pull off a victory. His opponent Debbie Halvorson really beat herself by being dumb and obviously listening to some dumb folks. As a result it wasn’t even close as most folks thought it would be. But that was about three months ago. And he left two weeks before it was announced, after the man (Raghuveer Nayak) who supposedly was going to raise or give the million and a half dollars to former Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested for something. Now Junior’s office says that Nayak’s arrest had nothing to do with Junior’s leave. Pardon me if’n I don’t quite believe that, but you know Ima is suspicious anyway. Then the other reason was he

Oh well, I guess we will have to wait to see what the real deal is, ‘cause even his mouth almighty daddy ain’t saying nothing. -ImaTHE PRESIDENT BETTER USE WHAT GOD GAVE HIM If there is a drop of Black mother wit in President Obama’s veins he had better use it and use it soon. Old Mutt Romney is breathing down his neck in the race for the White House. For those of you who thought rich people were less prejudiced than the poor white trash, go figure why the million and billionaires are coming out the woodwork to contribute cash dollars to Mutt. Obama, who raised record moola in the last presidential race, is now crying running behind in raising cash for his campaign. Of course it’s a little hard for Ima to count as high as Obama campaign funds, but Mutt is raising more. It’s unbelievable in this day and age

President Barack Obama that super rich folks would want someone out of the White House who has saved this country from a depression and financial ruin just cause they may have to pay their just due in taxes. Greedy, greedy, greedy. One thing for sure is Mutt has already told us poor folks he don’t give a tinker’s damn about us. And we (Black folks) ain’t exactly feeling warm and fuzzy about President Obammy’s treatment of us. He has made large strides with the immigrants (legal and illegal) and even bigger strikes with the Gays and Lesbian faction, but we have been treated like stepchildren. Now, it ain’t no way any logical thinking Black person will vote for Mutt, but the percentages are so (Continued on page 17)

BUSINESS New Harvard report on housing: Homeownership remains a distant dream as renters increase By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist Despite some signs of housing recovery, says a new report from Harvard University, America remains a nation burdened by high housing costs. Newly released findings from the university’s State of the Nation’s Housing 2012, finds some signs of recovery in the housing market in spite of continuing concerns about foreclosures and the border economy. Whether renting or buying a home, the number of households paying more than half of their incomes for housing now stands at 20.2 million. “Recovery in the owner-occupied market could strengthen,” states the report, “if positive job numbers and tightening markets encourage more households to buy. Although young households have increasingly opted to rent in recent years, most still aspire to homeownership.” Despite dropping home sale prices and record low rates for mortgages, the nation’s housing trends show a marked increase in
renters, not homeowners, says the report. Among homeowners, home equity now accounts for the smallest share of household wealth since 1945 when recordkeeping began. Further, early this year homeownership was at its lowest level since early 1997, dropping more than five percentage points for heads of households up to age 44 and slightly lower by 4.5 percentage points for those 45-54 years of age. Nor has the nation seen the last of foreclosures. More than 2 million homes in early 2012 are in some stage of foreclosure. Nearly half of 2011 foreclosures were clustered in only 10 percent of the nation’s 65,000 census tracts. Compared to recent years, foreclosures have slowed. For example, the number of completed foreclosures was down from 1.1 million in 2010 to 890,000 in 2011. However many imminent foreclosures were delayed in part as mortgage companies awaited the results of the recent mortgage settlement reached by the nation’s attorneys general. With several major lenders agreeing to the set-
Charlene Crowell tlement terms, it is possible - if not probable - that the pace of foreclosures may speed up again. These figures do not include the number of underwater homeowners who now owe more than their home is worth. Today, more than one in five mortgage loans is underwater. Together these loans represent $717 billion in negative equity.
In the meantime, the number of renters surged by 5.1 million during the 2000s, the largest decadelong increase in the post-war era. Moreover, households earning more than $75,000 contributed nearly 20 percent of the increase in renters from 2006-2011. Other key findings include: • After paying for housing, $619 was all that was left to cover monthly living expenses for severely cost-burdened, low-income families in late 2011; • One in three 18-34 year olds lived with their parents in 2010, an increase of 1.95 million compared to 2006; • In 2001, the nation’s shortage of affordable housing units stood at 2.4 million; by 2010, that shortfall more than doubled to 5.1 million housing units. • The number of unemployed, severely-burdened households surged from 3.8 million in 2001 to 5.8 million by 2010. The State of the Nation’s Housing is released annually by the Joint Center whose standing mission is to advance understanding of housing issues. This year’s
findings echo an earlier housing report, Housing Landscape 2012, released by the Center for Housing Policy. That earlier report noted the financial stress of the nation’s growing housing burden. After analyzing Census data on housing costs and incomes, the Center determined that housing affordability eroded in 24 states and now affects nearly one in four working households. “Even as the recovery takes hold in many markets across the country,” said Chris Herbert, director of research at Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, “we cannot lose sight of the long-run challenge of providing affordable housing for the most vulnerable, nor forget the damage done to foreclosure-ridden neighborhoods, which will take years to heal.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. TECH TALK Keeping It Real In A Virtual World Google Maps To Stalk Workers By Billy D. Montgomery Looks like employers have another tool to monitor their workers, thanks to Google Maps. Google recently released a new service called Google Maps Coordinate, which is designed to allow businesses to track the activities of workers who perform job assignments outside of the office. By tapping into GPS devices on their cell phones, a delivery service provider, for instance, could follow the progress of drivers as they move from home-to-home making deliveries. Currently, the service requires a local application that is only available for Google’s Android operating system, but Google is working on an app for Apple’s iPhones and iPads. At first glance, it appears as another advancement in communications with employers and the workforce. After all, innovative tools for overseeing remote workforces have long been available, including the common use of
two-way phones and other methods. And since employers own all the work-related equipment, they feel justified in monitoring every-

Billy D. Montgomery thing from email, employee visited websites and even listening on phone conversations in the office, so why would there be less sur-
veillance expectations in the field? When Google Maps made its entry into the online world in 2005, it was quickly established as a popular web mapping service application to assist people travelling via route planners and street maps. It also provides a business locator for countries around the world. Using satellite technology, the images are not updated in real time; in fact they are several months or even years old. However, the Coordinate will work in a real time format showing workers at the exact time they are at a certain location. As with any new adjustment to taking information on line, there are renewed fears surrounding privacy and security. Moving company data to a web platform creates legitimate concerns over possible hacking and compromising of data, but Google claims that the information is encrypted and is in safe keeping on it’s servers. However, one thing that Google can’t control is the potential of employer abuse in administering Saturday, June 30, 2012
the service. For example, could this tool be used to track employees when they’re not on the job? According to Google, workers can set their phones to drop the connection to Coordinate like when employees get off work, but the skepticism remains as the potential exists for workers to forget to shut off the monitoring, or other glitches in the system. For those who feel that it is another “Big Brother Is Watching” move, you could be somewhat on point, but at the end of the day, it is about the company’s bottom line. So employees have little redress of grievances unless they can prove they are being monitored outside of work hours. The best thing to do is to be where you are, when you are supposed to be there Billy Montgomery is a professor of journalism at Roosevelt University where his concentration is on new media/- technology and multimedia journalism. 9

“Cool to be Smart” Program boosts honor rolls at three South Side Schools More than 100 middle school students from six Chicago Public Schools, including three in Englewood, were celebrated recently for qualifying for and remaining on the honor roll. For many, this required overcoming name-calling and rejection from their peer group. Studies suggest that African-American and Latino honor students often cave to classmates’ taunts that they’re “acting white.” To win their peers’ acceptance, they set aside schoolwork and their grades decline. Now a new program, “It’s So Cool to be Smart,” has transformed studiousness into coolness at six Chicago Public Schools—Leslie Lewis Elementary and Horatio May Elementary Community Academy in Austin, Little Village Academy, in Little Village, and John W. Cook Elementary, Anna R. Langford Community Academy and Jesse Sherwood Elementary in Englewood. Since its introduction, schools report that they have increased the number of students on the honor roll. Some schools have more than doubled the number of honor students since the first quarter. “We’re extremely pleased with the program’s impact,” said Lisa Moultrie, Executive Director of Teach America’s Children, which awarded grants of up to $10,000
to each school to execute the program. “Not only have honor students continued to excel; many of their classmates now want to be on the honor roll so they can join the Smart Club and participate in academic enhancement activities.” One of those activities: The “Is it cool to be smart?” essay contest, which was open to all middle grade students at the schools. Winners were announced during a recent celebration. First place: London Glass, 7th grade, Sherwood. Second place: Sebastian Paz, 8th grade, Little Village. Third place: Ariel Thompson, 8th grade, Lewis. Little Village Academy swept the “Smart in the Summer” Scholarship awards: Sixth graders Grecia Estrada and Illyana Prado will attend the Girls Plus Math Program at Western Illinois University this summer. Heading for the Sci-Camp Engineering program at Northern Illinois University are sixth graders Judith Evangelio, Nataly Hernandez and Steven Ortiz, and seventh grader Mauricio Moreno. These students will get a taste of college life during the week-long residential academic camp. Langford eighth grader Jonathan Vaughn won the 2012 Smart High School Scholarship to Providence St. Mel High School. The $4,000 award can be annually renewed through senior year. Other winners at the celebra-
tion were “It’s So Cool to be Smart” program parents who make extraordinary efforts to support their children’s academic success. This year’s $500 winners were: Kim Clay, Cook; Monica Baker, Langford; LaShanda Will iams, Lewis; Maria Cristina Prado, Little Village; Tiffany Shell, May; and Daiyalle Brown, Erica Emery, Shantese Leonard-Woodard of Sherwood. Youth have supported the Y-Me Breast Cancer Walk and participated in other community service events. Deborah O. Brown, of NBC-5 Chicago has spent weeks training young ladies in etiquette. The Better Man than Me Foundation, under the leadership of Paul Phillip has

The youth involved have grown tremendously through this experience, and many of those vying for scholarships are the first in their families to attend college. This is not the traditional cotillion that is costly for families; the teens do not have to pay large sums of money to secure ball gowns and

Lowe’s and NHS of Chicago transforms blocks Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) in partnership with Lowe’s completed two beautification projects in one of NHS’ targeted neighborhoods, Auburn Gresham, recently. NHS of Chicago was awarded a $100,000 grant from Lowe’s this year to complete the two projects in the neighborhood. The first project was completed on the 7800 Block of South Aberdeen in the City of Chicago’s micro-market program area as part of its 25th Annual NeighborWorks® Day on Saturday, June 2. For the project, volunteers from Lowe’s and community leaders distributed home safety kits containing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, flashlights and batteries, installed weather stripping and caulked windows and assisted with “curb appeal” and facade improvements to 30 to 40 existing homes. NHS also partnered with Genesis Housing to provide structural weatherization to the house utilizing recently-trained
den to spruce up the block. In total 47 homes were impacted by the projects. The projects would not have been possible without the support from Lowe’s. On both occasions, Lowe’s volunteers partnered with the local residents to help them spruce up their block while demonstrating to them a few small improvements that can be made to a home to increase its curb appeal. While NHS is grateful to Lowe’s, the homeowners benefitted from the lessons taught and are excited to have some visual additions to their homes. They also now have a bit more pride in their block and the community they call home. Established in 1975, NHS of Chicago is the city’s largest nonprofit community development organization committed to providing Chicago and Elgin residents affordable resources so they can buy, fix, and keep their homes. Since its creation, NHS has created more than 3,880 new homeowners. NHS also works to stimulate community reinvest-

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER A Review by Bonnie DeShong I love vampires. I love vampire books, movies, costumes, Bela Lugosi to True Blood, I love vampires. With that said, for the life of me I don’t have a clue why author, Seth Grahame-Smith, would allow someone to take an interesting book and turn it into a bazaar film. The deal is Abraham Lincoln’s mother was killed by a vampire. He wants revenge. He meets Henry Sturges (Dominic Cooper) a man who knows a lot about vampires and how to slay them. He offers Abe all types of guns to choose from to take down a vampire, however, Abe goes for something he is use to swinging, an ax. Henry teaches Abe flying martial arts moves, how to fly and twist in the air, move quickly and the code to being a vampire hunter, don’t get close to anyone. Abe heads off to Springfield, Illinois, to hunt vampires, which he does rather well. He becomes a store clerk, meets his future wife, Mary Todd who is engaged to Stephen Douglas, runs into a
childhood friend who happens to be a freed slave, runs for President, stops hunting vampires, frees the slaves, almost loses the war, pulls a miracle out of his top hat, kills more vampires, and goes to the theater. To be honest, I would have liked the movie if the vampire hunter’s name was Abe but not Abraham Lincoln. It was too weird from the very beginning and I just couldn’t get into it. Documentary on victim conveys triumph of human spirit Rookie filmmaker of “Hole in the Head” making gains in independent film market By J. Coyden Palmer A new independent documentary DVD released in May that chronicles the final two years of the life of a man who was medically experimented on when he was only five-years-old is a must see film for every American. “Hole in the Head: A Life Revealed” focuses on two church friends in southern California and how their relationship changed after 20 years when one revealed to the other a shocking secret he hid under a wig and hat for 71 years. Written and produced by Wilbert Smith Ph.D., the 80 minute film has won numerous awards at film festivals across the country. It is a human interest story that will bring tears to your eyes as you are drawn into a story about the power of the human spirit and one person’s decision to choose love over hate. “Hole in the Head: A Life Revealed” focuses on Vertus Hardiman and his lifelong struggle of dealing with the pain of an experimental radiation treatment he received as a child to cure what in today’s times would be considered a typical childhood ailment. The inhumane procedure left Vertus with an opening in his head. Much of the film and all of the interviews with Vertus were recorded by Smith on his home camcorder. Even though he has never filmed a movie or written a book, Smith felt compelled to do so after Vertus, his friend from the church choir told him his painful secret. A successful insurance agent
with Allstate, Smith was able to get Allstate’s Official Spokesperson actor Dennis Haysbert to narrate the film. Haysbert’s booming baritone voice serves as the perfect counter to Vertus’ at times frail 85-year-old vocals. But even in his failing health when his voice is weakened and captions are needed, viewers will still feel the resolve and commitment from Vertus, as he explains how he and nearly a dozen other Black children were taken on a school bus to a hospital in southern Indiana for treatment in 1927 and all of their lives changed forever. Hardiman grew up in Lyles Station, Indiana, 35 miles north of Evansville. Founded in 1849 by a freed Tennessee slave named Joshua Lyles, the town is the state’s first Black settlement and the only one that remains today. Smith and Vertus return to Lyles Station in the film as Vertus explains how he grew up with a strong religious background and work ethic. When Vertus takes Smith to the hospital where he suffered the radiation treatment along with an uncle and another sibling, he is overcome with emotion, in one of many tugs on the heart moments in the film. In the years since his childhood experience, the radiation he was subjected to has created a large crater in Vertus’ head. The wound gets worse and deepens as he gets older along with the smell. In the latter stages of the film, the wound is so bad, flies and other insects are attracted to it on a regular basis. Vertus’ courage is demonstrated throughout the production. As even in his worse moments he insists his friend Smith continue to film because Vertus believes the
purpose of his life “was to tell this story.” After viewing Hole in the Head, one cannot help but think about the victims of other scientific tests using humans like the

the DVD’s in the true American spirit; via a grassroots campaign of word of mouth and social media networks. The 3:20 trailer for the film has already received over half a million hits on Youtube and Smith has embarked on a media blitz with Black newspapers and radio stations around the country. This week, the African Methodist Episcopal Church during their conference in Nashville voted unanimously to help sell the film at churches nationwide. In addition to the DVD, Smith has written a book of the same title with more details of his friendship with Vertus. Smith believes Vertus’ story should become a part of school curriculum in districts across the country, but especially in areas where there is a large population of African Americans. The documentary also reveals that the Lyles Station experiments were not an isolated event. One example involves radiation experiments against darkerskinned immigrant children in Israel in 1951. As shocking as Hole in the Head: A Life Revealed” is, the film does not delve into an anti-government theme for the inhumane treatment Vertus received. Instead it keeps its simplicity as a human interest story, true to the heart and character to the main subject of the film, Vertus Hardiman. Both the DVD and book “Hole in the Head: A Life Revealed” can be purchased through Smith’s website www.holeinthehead.com with the book selling for $24.95 and the DVD $17.95.

wanted to page through while we were there. There were no computers, tablets, or smart phones to hold sway over our minds or lead us to adventures like books did. We learned too at a young age that regardless of what we were interested in, there was a book about it. Somewhere along the line, interest in reading waned, and then computers became front and center. And trips to the library became fewer and fewer. But libraries didn’t go away. Now that school is out and many families are challenged with having activities, especially low-cost or free ones for the children; libraries should be at the top of everyone’s list. It is a great place for families because there are books, videos, and periodicals

for adults and children. It definitely is the old-fashioned way, but many, if not most of the things that can be found online today, also are available in books at the library. Chicago libraries like most others offer several programs for children that entertain and inform. Parents and caretakers would do well to check these out. And libraries aren’t completely rooted in the twentieth century. For the technologically inclined, libraries do offer computer and online access. So rather than allow your children to complain about not having anything to do this summer, or you worrying about the cost of activities, introduce the family to the closest public library. Stony Island – 1970’s Chicago style funk on DVD (Continued from page 12) sources and heavy losses, this resilient group of dedicated musicians--armed only with wit, sleight of hand and outrageous Chicago bravado--must come together to finally make their smash debut at the popular Burning Spear club on the city’s South Side. Jazz great the late Oscar Brown, Jr., plays the alderman; the film also stars Edward 'Stoney' Robinson, George Englund, Ronnie Barron, Rae Dawn Chong, Susanna Hoffs, Dennis Franz, Meshach Taylor and many more of Chicago’s finest musicians and actors. I loved this movie, as at first I thought it was a documentary. who form an R&B band in their multi-racial Chicago neighborhood.” I believe the reason I had such an affinity for this film, outside of the music, is because I was a 20-something when it was made, and I could relate to the scenes showing the city and downtown, as I remember them so many years ago. Consequently, Stony Island is as much a tribute to the band members as it is a tribute to a great city known for its music roots. After originally having a robust festival run, the film, which was made for only $350,000 in Chicago at a time when movies were
rarely allowed to shoot in the city, was picked up by a small independent distributor, World Northal, and played in a few area theatres in 1978. “When the Black kids started showing up to the ‘white’ theatres, the distribution company was forced to pull it and later re-positioned it as a blaxploitation picture calling it My Main Man from Stony Island,” recalls Davis. “Unfortunately, that confused our target audience.” Look for Stony Island at your favorite DVD rental location. Some of us really do want to work and be self sufficient.” A resident of the Roseland community herself for the past 25 years, Latiker has seen the street trappings that often push so many young people especially Black males down the wrong path. “I lost four kids to violence since opening Kids Off the Block (in 2007). The last one was killed Oct. 30, 2009. He was just 19-years-old but a good kid,” recalled Latiker. “I knew he was going places and headed somewhere great. I just didn’t know it was Heaven.” Her organization serves youth age 12 to 24 years old and 80 percent of the participants are Black males, she said. “Black males are quickly becoming extinct in the world and we have to save them. I have had boys in here from different gangs but that has never been a problem because everyone respects me, what I am trying to do and the confines of these walls,” explained Latiker. “Everyone knows once inside the

(Continued from page 14) health and safety concerns they hope to extend citywide. According to Muhammad, the program began on Monday, June 25, and will run for seven-weeks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at The ARK from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “This program is going to focus on not only social-emotional critical thinking life skills and a lot of different types of social sciences for young people to learn how to deal with their conflicts and learn how to prevent violence, but they will also learn how to use detox practices to look into culture, music, video games, art and learn how to make better decisions so they won’t be influenced by media, culture and those things their peers might want to influence them with,” said Muhammad. They will also learn different aspects of music production, sound engineering, how to perform on stage and those who don’t want to be entertainers, this program will help to develop their talents. Muhammad explained that his Hip-Hop DetoxX program is aimed at removing “poison…. A lot of the poison they are detoxing from are the false ideas, false con-
cepts and behaviors they are involved in due to environment and some things that may have happened to them that caused them trauma and so now they are responding based on that trauma.” For example, Muhammad said some of these traumatic experiences might include teen pregnancy, criminality and behaviors that produce recidivism. “We are looking at those things that cause young people to become violent with themselves and others. All of the things that we look at as dysfunctions, those are the poisons that we’re looking to detox young people from. “We only have a certain number of slots for the summer,” he explained. “Those who are not able to make it for the summer, will be able to keep their names on the list for the fall and winter session. Pointing to a “Life Guide” hanging on the wall, Muhammad explained, “This is one of the visual aids we use to show what the end goal of the Hip Hop Detox is. We take young people through different processes so that they will be able to see how they can attain what is called a productive life so they will have a peace of mind and opportunities, but they have to know what it looks like and how to get there.”
The first part of this state of the program is to get the youth to be truthful about their present stage in life. Pointing to a myriad of twoway streets that are labeled after life’s problems, Muhammad said the aim is to find out where are the youth on this map. “The first part of the process is to get them to understand that they have to be truthful about where they are” in life. “Are you traveling down Self-Destructive Way at the moment, or are you on “Ignorant Lane,” or on “Promiscuous Drive,” or “HIV Lane,” or “Hate Street.” “Are you on “Gang Street” or “Drop-out Street.” Muhammad said they must understand there are consequences involved for their making particular choices “whether it is a state or federal penitentiary or you ending up in a cemetery where on your tombstone it’s drug dealer or drug overdose or bully. “We make it very real to them so they will be able to make a change because all of these represent twoway streets,” said Muhammad. “They don’t have to stay there. They can make a decision to go down ‘Positive Drive’ and go the straight and narrow way or ‘Recovery Road’ so they can get to a productive life,” he said of his visual aid.

(Continued from page 6) their homes. There are others that may deduct for meals. Without intervention, the majority of 2.5 million workers take care of our most precious assets, our children and our parents, without being paid fairly. They cook our food, and who wants someone who feels that they are being paid unfairly to cook their food? After all, even the private household workers in the pre-civil rights South weren’t always benign. In California, a piece of legislation that is similar to the New York bill is being considered. Indeed, Assembly Bill 889 passed the lower house of the California State legislature, but the California State Senate is dragging its heels. Indeed, some have so distorted the bill that they describe it as “the babysitter law,” even though those who do not work full-time are specifically excluded from the legislation. Those who oppose the bill talk about their free market rights, but have blinders on when it comes to the rights of others. Unfortunately, while women are the majority of private household workers, it is also women who are the majority
of those who hire, and often exploit, them. It is amazing how stuck the feminist movement has become around issues of women on the bottom. Twenty years ago there were passionate debates about housework passed along and the many ways that the women’s movement could be mutually supportive along class lines. Now, though a passionate woman is fighting for domestic workers, she is not often joined by those who have greater voice, more power, and the ability to make a difference. While domestic workers today are less likely to be African American than Latino, we in the African American community need to remember that the workplace has long been oppressive to those at the bottom. In speaking up for domestic workers, we speak up for our mothers and grandmothers, but also for ourselves, no matter what our economic status. -ImaLOCKED UP . . . GOOD!!! Ol’ child predator Sandusky had a speedy trial and is now behind bars. Ima says GOOD!!! The details revealed in the trial was down right disgusting about how he took advantage of kids in dysfunctional family settings. He was sicker than I thought. Now I hope they will charge his wife Dotty with being an accessory, ‘cause ain’t no way anybody with any sense at all believe that she didn’t know. He was probably pumping her from the rear too. Some of the victims say she interacted with them before they were assaulted in their home and some were convinced that she must have heard them call for help to no avail. It’s high time that we rid society of such animals. The victims will probably be ruined for The Chicago Crusader
