Second building renamed after a Black man By Wendell Hutson In 2002, the former Cook County Hospital was renamed after a Black man, and last week the Cook County Criminal Courts Building also was renamed after a Black man. The county’s flagship hospital at 1900 W. Polk St. is named after the late John H. Stroger Jr., who was the former president of the Cook County Board. And retired Cook County Judge George N. Leighton, Illinois’ first Black Appellate Court justice, attended a recent ceremony for the official renaming of the Criminal Courts Building at 2650 S. California Ave. as “The Honorable George N. Leighton Criminal Courts Building.” Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Dorothy Brown and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle both said they would like to see more county buildings named after people of wisdom, just as the first two buildings are. “It is not so much about renaming buildings after someone Black as it is about wisdom. Both John H. Stroger Jr. and George N. Leighton are two men of wisdom and gave a lot during their tenures as county employees,” recalled Brown. “I would love to see every county building named after someone great, regardless of color.” Brown also suggested the county should consider naming rights for county buildings to bring in revenue.

“Look at U.S. Cellular Field and the United Center. Two buildings renamed after corporations who paid a good penny to have their names on the buildings,” Brown told the Crusader. “Colleges have buildings named after donors so it might be a good idea for the county to explore these types of opportunities.” Speaking at the ceremony Preckwinkle said she was pleased to see Leighton finally get the recognition he deserved. “It is only befitting that the county renames this building after him (George Leighton) for the years he spent here in this building as a devoted, public servant,” she said. “He is a pioneer for African American lawyers, and will remain an inspiration for us all. Judge Leighton is a living testament to what can be achieved with education and hard work, and his legacy is an indication of the social progress we have made in the past century.” At age 99, Leighton now lives in Plymouth, Mass. with his 92 year-old sister Virginia, who accompanied him to last week’s ceremony. Leighton said he was overwhelmed with emotion as he thanked a crowd of 200 people. “I can’t tell you how good it feels to have a building where I spent so many years helping people named after me,” Leighton said as he fought back tears. “It would be great if more public buildings were named after people of color, granted they are worthy of (Continued on page 16)

RETIRED COOK COUNTY JUDGE George N. Leighton said he never thought he would someday have a building named after him for just doing his job. The 99 year-old retired Cook County circuit court judge was on hand last week for the official renaming of the Cook County Criminal Courts Building at 2650 S. California Ave. in his honor.

Bill Tompkins named President and CEO of NNPA By George E. Curry Editor-in-Chief NNPA News Service WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Highly-respected media and entertainment executive William G. Tompkins, Jr. has been name president and chief executive officer of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a federation of more than 200 Black-owned publications. NNPA Chairman Cloves Campbell, publisher of the Arizona Informant, said Tompkins was selected from an impressive field of candidates screened by Carrington & Carrington, a Chicago-based executive search firm. “Bill is an accomplished, nationallyknown executive who will be responsible for executing the vision of the NNPA Board of Directors,” Campbell said. “Because the Board chair is elected every two years, having a president and CEO in place will provide the organization with smooth-

er operations and greater continuity.” Campbell described Tompkins as “a true visionary who will make an immediate impact on the organization.” Tompkins worked at the Washington Post for 19 years in a variety of top-level positions, including vice president of marketing, director of national advertising and manager of corporate and financial adver-

tising sales. He left the newspaper to join Kodak as chief marketing officer of its entertainment imaging business unit. Tompkins was also vice president and general manager of the Motion Picture Film Group for the Eastman Kodak Company, managing a $700 million global distribution operation. (Continued on page 2)

New health bill expected to help Black community By Wendell Hutson The state’s top doctor said The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 upheld last week by the U.S. Supreme Court would benefit the Black community greatly. “The bill (beginning Jan. 1, 2014) allows for parents to carry their children up to age 26 on their health insurance; those with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied coverage; and those with health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure do not necessarily have to go to free, public health clinics, which sometimes can be discouraging, and instead go to their nearby health clinic or select a primary physician at a hospital,” explained Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. “This bill will (also) ensure that those from our community have preventive, low cost measures just like those who are ‘well off’ and can afford quality healthcare.” The newly hired Black physician estimates that 1.9 million Illinois residents currently do not have health insurance and that Blacks tend to wait until the last minute to seek medical care often due to no insurance. While all Americans will be required to purchase health insurance

That means the overwhelming majority – 96 percent of all businesses in the U.S. or 5.8 million out of 6 million total businesses in the country are exempt from the requirement to contribute to the coverage of their employees, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And White House officials are spelling out exactly how small businesses would benefit greatly from the new law. According to Jason Furman, assistant to the president for Economic Policy and principal deputy director of the National, other benefits small (Black) businesses can expect from the president’s healthcare bill include: Tax credits for certain small businesses that choose to offer coverage. Currently, small businesses that have fewer than 25 employees and provide health insurance can qualify for a tax credit of up to 35 percent (up to 25 percent for non-profits) to offset the cost of insurance. •No insurance requirement for small businesses. Every small business with fewer than 50 employees is completely exempt from the law’s employer responsibility provisions.

Bill Tompkins named President and CEO of NNPA (Continued from page 1) In addition, he was chief marketing officer of NextGen media Group, the firm that launched the social media news site ReportN. He also was president of William Tompkins Associates, a consulting firm specializing in providing advice on strategic planning and operations. Tompkins is eager to draw on his wealth of experience on behalf of NNPA. “Having had corporate roles during the majority of my career, I now have the opportunity to work with people who represent the heart and soul of what our

country is all about, that being entrepreneurs are making a difference,” he said. And he will make a huge difference for NNPA, a group of publishers who own and operate their own newspapers. “I will be able to create a firm and more solid internal foundation for the Association to ensure that we consistently provide higher quality and more useful services to our members,” Tompkins explained. “I will also be responsible for ensuring the longterm financial viability of the NNPA and for providing bigger revenue streams for our mem-

bers.” According to a job description NNPA provided to candidates for the position, “The President and CEO exercises overall authority and responsibility for the direction of the organization’s personnel, programs and services and drives the execution of the strategy through its daily activities.” The job description also said the president and CEO “is the lead spokesperson and advocate for the organization with the community and a diverse set of partners and stakeholders.” Tompkins received his BA in

He is a former chairman of the National Kidney Foundation and has served on the board of the National Advertising Council. Although many major U.S. daily newspapers are experiencing financial problems as a result of dwindling circulation, community-based publications appear to be much more viable. So much so that a company owned by Warren Buffett, the second-richest person in the United States behind Bill Gates, recently purchased 63 dai-

ly and weekly newspapers from Media General, Inc. for $142 million. “In spite of the transformational changes in the newspaper industry, Black media publications continue to play a critical role in our country, both in terms of their impact on society at large and especially in the role they play in local communities,” Tompkins said. “My background is in media and entertainment so the opportunity to participate in the reinvigoration and transformation of this hidden jewel of newspaper assets will be both exciting and impactful.” The Chicago Crusader

Contract expires for Public School Educators On June 30, 2012 the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU)/Board of Education 2007 – 2012 collective bargaining agreement expired for the districts more than 25,000 educators. Without a new contract in place, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) may impose a number of changes to the school calendar, class size, holiday schedule, work schedules and school personnel. The Board has the ability to remove holidays from our current schedule. “It is our responsibility to work toward a contract that is fair and equitable to our members and one that will help us give our students the high-quality, first-class education they deserve,” said CTU President Karen GJ Lewis. “While there has been progress in some areas, we remain far apart on many others.” A fact-finder will release recommendations on many of the economic issues on July 16, 2012. Both sides will have 15 days to accept or reject the recommendations. Should both sides accept the fact-finding report will become part of the new contract. Despite the absence of a new collective bargaining agreement, as of July 1, 2012, CTU members still retain specific rights. These rights include, but are not limited

to: Wages – The wages paid to CTU members at the levels currently described in the Appendix A cannot be reduced—regardless of the length of school day. Health Insurance – Members retain the same basic coverage at the same rates described in Appendix B of the contract. Pension Pick-Up – The board will continue to pay the employer contribution for educators’ pensions. Sick Days – Sick day banks remain intact and will continue to accrue. The Union is currently negotiating over payouts of unused sick days, and this will be determined when the contract is settled. However, the PEP program expires at the end of the contract and will not continue unless it is included in the final contract settlement. Grievances – Teachers, paraprofessionals and clinicians still have the right to file and process grievances. Summer School – All of the terms in the current contract should continue without any change. Leaves of Absence – All of the terms in the current contract will remain. Vacation – No change, howev-

er, the Board has already announced its intent to eliminate Columbus and Pulaski days from the current schedule. Whistleblowing —- CTU’s right to monitor and police CPS activity has remained unchanged. There have been critical changes in state law regarding evaluation and teacher practice beginning this school year. Please

reference www.ctunet.com/evaluation for detailed information on the Performance Evaluation Reform Act or the new REACH system being imposed by CPS. CTU has been in contract negotiations with the Board since November 2011. The Chicago Teachers Union represents 30,000 teachers and educational support personnel

working in the Chicago Public Schools and, by extension, the students and families they serve. CTU, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Federation of Teachers, is the third largest teachers local in the country and the largest local union in Illinois. Mr. President: Are you dissing the Black Press? By Akeya Dickson NNPA News Service

Obama loses...’ This is what I’m hearing in the community.” President Obama will certainly lose if he does not maintain a firm grip on the African-American vote. That much was conceded by the panelists — Broderick Johnson, a campaign senior adviser to President Obama; Hilary Shelton, director of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP; and Julie Greene, deputy political director for the AFL-CIO. “I also honestly won’t apologize for defending the president’s record,” Johnson said. “So I’m Ok with people saying you’re being kind of defensive about his record because I want to defend his record, that’s my responsibility. “And I hope that I’m conveying that there’s a lot that the president is doing that needs to be articulated with your help in ways that your readers and your communities hear and appreciate,” said Johnson. “So I hear you.” But some publishers said that record is not being effectively communicated. Sonny Messiah Jiles, publisher of the Houston Defender, said: “We’re trying to give you feedback from the ground up, this is not an attack. We’re trying to educate you on how to shape our message because right now your message is not coming

ATLANTA – “Get Out the Vote,” a panel discussion at the National Newspaper Publishers Association annual convention, should have been renamed, “Get Out the Anger” as African-American newspaper publishers expressed strong displeasure over what they deemed the failure of President Barack Obama’s administration to accommodate the needs of the Black Press. “We don’t think the president has ever spoken to us. He’s spoken to the Latino community and he’s been specific,” said Robert W. Bogle, publisher of the Philadelphia Tribune and a former NNPA president. “This is the first president since Franklin Roosevelt that has not invited the Black Press to the White House (for an interview).” Although President Obama has met several times with AfricanAmerican newspaper publishers at the White House, he has never addressed an NNPA convention. The NNPA News Service has made repeated requests for a one-on-one interview with the president, but those requests have been denied. Other African-American media outlets have had similar experiences. Heart & Soul magazine, a health

and fitness magazine for women of color, offered to place Michelle Obama on the cover but they, too, were denied an interview with the first lady. African-American media executives, many of them strong supporters of President Obama, are puzzled by President and Mrs. Obama’s frequent appearances on late-night comedy shows yet his staff can’t – or won’t – find time for them to be interviewed by the Black Press. Dorothy Leavell, immediate past chairman of the NNPA Foundation, which operates the NNPA News Service, and BlackPressUSA.com, said the last time the NNPA was granted an interview with Mr. Obama was before he assumed office. “I have made several requests that we be allowed to have an interview. All 200 of us cannot get an interview with the president, that’s unreasonable,” she said. “But for a national organization such as NNPA to not be allowed to interview the president, that’s unacceptable.” Disillusionment with the president and his staff is not limited to the Black Press. “They feel that they’re being taken for granted, they don’t feel included,” said Jaime Cain, publisher of the Times Weekly newspaper in Joliet, Ill. “I’m hearing, ‘So when President

through to our readers or to the community. And in some cases, some of us aren’t clear on what your message is.” Jiles wasn’t the only one unclear about the message. “Where’s my information that you brought to me today? There are 200 newspapers here. What I’m saying is this is a public relations nightmare that you’re hearing in terms of communication,” said Jim Washington, publisher of the Dallas Weekly. “Who is responsible in any of your organizations dealing specifically with the press in this room? You need to go back and say, ‘You missed the opportunity.’” Shelton, who said that he is on Capitol Hill and in the White House at least once a week, said that he has also witnessed a breakdown in communications. “They don’t know how to talk about all of the great things they’ve done. We do a better job at the NAACP of talking about what (President Obama) has done for us,” Shelton said. “We talk about the

health care bill. The first bill the president signed into law around health care was S-CHIP. Four million children added to the health care roll, 35 percent of them were African American. They should have claimed that victory. We did. “I know Broderick (Johnson) gets it, but there are a lot of people in the White House press office who don’t,” said Shelton. And they’re going to have to fix that problem.” Leavell said the problem has to be fixed from the inside. “They need some of us in the campaign. I don’t see anybody from my community in Chicago involved in the campaign downtown,” said Leavell, publisher of The Crusader in Chicago and Gary, Ind. “You better get out there. You better get us involved,” said Leavell. “I’m going to vote, because I understand the importance of it. I know the sacrifices that were made. But our young people don’t know, and will not come out if they are not involved. You need to get on the case.”

OPINION

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE DAY IN BLACK AMERICA Recently, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld Obamacare, which is essentially a win for President Barack Obama and for a number of uninsured Americans. Almost at the same instant, United States Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt for a caper theatrically dubbed “Fast and Furious.” It was the first time that a sitting attorney general has been subjected to such an action. Both of these incidents, Obamacare and the Eric Holder debacle, involve very high ranking African Americans. It is interesting in what is being called “post-racial America” that we have such a wide range of issues facing the Black community. On the one hand, the president of the United States and the attorney general are African American. In addition to this, Tiger Woods, Lebron James and Serena Williams are still at the top of their games in the sports arena. On other fronts, lesser known African Americans are the CEOs of major corporations, and are making inroads in various and sundry fields of endeavor. At the same time, other African Americans languish at the bottom of society, and some are even trying to dig deeper holes in order to sink lower in the mud of degradation. Basically, it is obvious that, like the schism between the rich and poor in America, a similar schism is apparent between Blacks at the top of the socioeconomic ladder and those at the very bottom. There is a class gap. When it comes to poverty, one size does not fit all. What message does this have for African Americans as we celebrate the July 4th holiday, dubbed Independence Day? It certainly means more than picnics and barbecue; more than fireworks. Even though the Colonies were able to wrest their independence from King George, many Blacks are still fighting for independence in America. And judging from the wide range of experiences among African Americans, some have been able to use their skills to carve out a modicum of independence, while others still don’t have a clue. Now, this is not to say that Blacks have “arrived,” whatever that may mean. It does point to the notion that independence is not something that is usually voluntarily given; it is earned, it is fought for, and it requires hard work for its realization. For starters, there are a few things that we can do that will help all of us on this journey. This is important because, no matter what our position, we are linked together, and the weakest link can determine what happens to the whole racial chain, i.e., the rest of us. We can begin to keep our communities clean and safe. We can trust each other and economically support each other. And most importantly, we can STOP KILLING EACH OTHER!!! This is something that no government or other entity outside of the community can do for us. The buck stops with the Black community. And the truth of the matter is that if we do just these few things, we may demonstrate enough unity that we can have a significant political and economic impact in America. We can save ourselves. Be not deluded; this will not happen until we make it happen. We will not experience true independence until we decide to do what we have to do. Period. A luta continua.

Chicago is fast reclaiming the title of America’s capital of murder and mayhem. In the last three weekends, the city had over onehundred shootings and eighteen murders. Chicago has become “Kill-cago,” and city violence has again become a national story. What’s really going on Chicago? Why is the Second City the lead story in urban violence? When we look at the facts, Chicago is the ultimate “too city.” One, the public educational system is too dysfunctional. With a price tag of almost six billion dollars a year, Chicago Public Schools graduate less than half of its students. Only six of every one hundred high school grads graduate from a four year college or university in four years. This year’s education agenda? We are looking at longer school days, no major curriculum overhaul, and a possible teachers strike. We have political gamesmanship, failing schools, and ill-equipped young people roaming the streets. Two, Black communities are disconnected from the real political dynamic of the city. Over the last decade, Chicago lost 180,000 Blacks. The old public housing ring around the Loop was dismantled, and formerly stable Black communities were disrupt-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR “What’s Up With Chicago?: It’s The Too City” Dear Editor:

ed and disoriented by an influx of poor people and a middle class exodus. In the regime change from Daley to Emanuel, Black leadership was sidelined and remains handpicked by the real power brokers. Black communities are left reeling without the natural processes of leadership development that would allow self-determination. These communities are the epicenters of the city’s murder and mayhem. Three, city law enforcement apparatus is too parochial. Police personnel are recruited through historic processes of nepotism and cronyism, and the Chicago Police Department lacks the cultural diversity reflected in all of the city’s communities. There are great officers, for sure, but law enforcement resembles an occupying force in minority communities. Community policing is a practical impossibility when officers are culturally distinctive from the community. Four, economic disparities and the impact of public policies are too wide among the city’s neighborhoods. The rich neighborhoods in Chicago are insulated and very rich, poor hoods are isolated and very poor. The middle classes are squeezed by high taxes, plummeting home values, fees and fines, parking meters, gotcha tickets, and a general higher cost for lower standards of living. Fractured families that were already hurting are hurting an awful lot more. As we have seen, that pain will be difficult to con-

tain in hurting neighborhoods. Five, our metro region circulates too many hand guns that are found used in inner city crimes. Barrington, Illinois has a large gun distributor in the same community as a large church. Suburban gun shops are suppliers of arms used in urban crimes. Guns alone don’t kill people, but sick people with convenient access to handguns do. Since we don’t see our region as one big community, (Continued on page 16)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Gentrification is Rolling into our Neighborhoods By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Gentrification: The process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). This vile system of transplanting traditional Black neighborhoods from a geography rich with legacy to a redeveloped area void of any of the history and culture we created. The Black residents are taxed out or moved out if they are renters. Where is this happening? A report by Michael J. Petrilli of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute clearly shows where the worst gentrification is happening within our nation. His source is the U.S. Census zip code tracking by race 2000 vs. 2010. He has compiled the Top 25 worst zip codes in this nation as far as gentrification is concerned. Chocolate cities aren’t so chocolate anymore. You can take a good look at Washington, DC, our nation’s capitol. Gentrification is on the rampage. Of the 12 active city council seats, six are possessed by whites. D.C. has three zip codes in

Harry C. Alford the Top 25. Zip code 20001 grew in white population by 27.2 percent during those ten years. That is the tenth highest growth in the nation. Zip code 20010 grew by 24.7 percent which is the 14th highest. While zip code 20005 grew by 21.1 percent. Only Brooklyn exceeds D.C. in having zip codes in the Top 25. Brooklyn has four zip codes. Zip code 11205 has white population growth by 29.6 percent which is sixth highest. That is followed by 11206 which grew by 29.0 percent.

Zip code 11238 has growth of 21.5 percent and zip code 11237 has growth of 19.7 percent. No other New York borough made it on the Top 25. They are gentrifying Brooklyn like I-95 going north. The city with the worst case of gentrification is none other than Columbia, South Carolina. This capital city’s zip code 29202 had a change over from nonwhite to white of 47.1 percent. That is number one! Another South Carolina city, Charleston, has its strong dose of gentrification. Zip code 29492 had white growth of 27.0 percent. Where are the Black folks going? The mid-size town of Chattanooga, Tennessee doesn’t surprise me. We have had experience with the contempt that is shown against anything Black in this town. It is mid-size but yet it has two zip codes in the Top 25. Chattanooga zip code 37408 had a growth of 38.7 percent which makes it the second highest gentrified zip code in the entire nation. Zip code 37403 experienced growth in white population of 22.9 percent. My brothers and sisters of Chattanooga, what are they doing to you? What is happening in the South Loop of Chicago puts it in the Top

25. Zip code 60604 shows a growth of 37.7 percent which makes it the third highest gentrified zip code in the nation. It is not stopping there. The gentrification posse has the South Side on its mind and in its playbook. It won’t be long. Very few communities west of the Mississippi are experiencing much gentrification. San Diego, California and Portland, Oregon are the only cities with zip codes in the Top 25 - 21.1 percent (21st) and 20.1 (24th) respectively. A solution to this onslaught of gentrification is strict planning ordinances and rigid building codes. Cities like Santa Barbara, California are fierce in enforcing their zoning laws. This beautiful city is just as beautiful today as it was when I was growing up 25 miles south of there in Oxnard, California. As for my town, it was once a peaceful city by the ocean. Its Black population when I was there was 12 percent and growing. Today it is less than four percent. It is really very sad. All of the landmarks are gone with nouveau architecture and landscaping. They should have learned from Santa Barbara. When we brought the National

Black Chamber of Commerce to Washington, D.C. the city was 82% Black. Today, it is less than 60% and the culture and business community is changing rapidly. Near Southeast around the new baseball stadium there is much newly built housing and it is inhabited by white professionals. The Shaw District is changing so fast that it is hard to find a Black owned restaurant in that area. At night, the side walks are filled with white pedestrians. Ben’s Chili Bowl is packed with white patrons. The late Rodney King’s: “Can’t we all get along?,” still applies today. We won’t be able to really get along until we learn to live amongst each other and interact with peace and love. Sometimes it looks as if we are Bedouin tribes roaming about the land and holding only temporary roots until the next move. Let’s cut the development schemes based on race and stand for stabilization and legacy building. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Clarence Thomas Worse than a Member of the KKK By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist As the nation eagerly awaited the Supreme Court’s decision on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, all eyes were focused on Anthony M. Kennedy, a staunch conservative who occasionally supplies the lone swing vote that tilts the court’s narrow 5-4 rulings in one direction or the other. But this time, to the surprise of arch-conservatives who had championed his cause, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. sided with the liberal bloc on the Supreme Court, giving President Obama an unexpected clear victory in his signature legislative accomplishment. What was not surprising was that Clarence Thomas would not step into the role filled by Roberts. He is widely regarded as the most conservative member of a conservative-dominated Supreme Court. Thomas is far more conservative that Hugo Black, a former member of the Ku Klux Klan who served on the court from 1937-1971. Black, a former U.S. Senator from Alabama (he once filibustered an anti-lynching bill) joined the KKK in the early 1920s. In fact, during the 1926 election, he gave speeches at The Chicago Crusader

George E. Curry KKK meetings throughout the state. Black later acknowledged that joining the Klan was a mistake and became one of the most liberal members of the Supreme Court, strongly backing the principle of “one man, one vote” and using the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to forbid racial discrimination. No such luck with Clarence Thomas. In every major case involving affirmative action – including Texas v. Hopwood, Adarand v. Pena and Grutter v. Bollinger – Thomas voted against the interests of African Americans. What makes that so strange is that Thomas has benefited from affirmative action throughout his adult life. In their excellent book, Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of

Clarence Thomas, Kevin Merida and Michael A. Fletcher, two colleagues at the Washington Post, write: “Every Thomas employer, from [Former Missouri Sen. John] Danforth, who gave him his first job, to President George H.W. Bush, who nominated him to the Supreme Court, chose Thomas at least partly because he is Black. Race is a central fact of his meteoric rise, and Thomas has alternately denied it and resented it – all the way to the top.” To characterize Thomas’ behavior as resentment is an understatement. The late U.S. Appeals Court Judge Leon Higginbotham observed, “I have often pondered how is it that Justice Thomas, an African-American, could be so insensitive to the plight of the powerless. Why is he no different, or probably worse, than many of the most conservative Supreme Court justices of the century? I can only think of one Supreme Court justice during the century who was worse than Justice Clarence Thomas: James McReynolds, a white supremacist who referred to Blacks as ‘niggers’.” Though arguably the worst, Thomas is by no means the only African American who votes against the interests of his community. Alabama Congressman Artur

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Davis was soundly defeated for reelection two years ago because he betrayed his constituents. Under the delusion that he could become the first Black governor of Alabama, Davis fervently attacked local Black leaders and was the only member of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote against the Affordable Care Act. Longtime Alabama State Senator Hank Sanders challenged Davis tactics. “Some whites use race to consolidate white voters during election and some Blacks use race to consolidate Black voters,” Sanders wrote in his newsletter, Senate Sketches. “But this time, there is a new context: a technically well qualified Black person is running for Governor of Alabama in the Democratic Primary against a technically well qualified white. There is also a new twist: a Black person is attempting to use the race of other Blacks to consolidate whites behind him. It’s a new context with new twists in an age old saga.” The saga did not end well for Davis, who has since joined the Republican Party. He lost 10 of the 12 counties that made up his congressional district, some by as much as 70 percent. He even lost his own polling place in Birmingham. And let’s not forget Edolphus Saturday, July 7, 2012

Towns, the Democratic Congressman from Brooklyn. Though Towns did not vote for a civil contempt citation against Attorney General Eric Holder, he took a more cowardly approach by voting present. We should not be surprised. This is the same person who supported Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama in 2008. Before that, he backed Republican Rudy Giuliani for mayor over Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messenger. Fortunately, Towns is not seeking re-election. When I look at Clarence Thomas, Artur Davis, Edolphus Towns and others we should hold in contempt, I think back to what Thurgood Marshall said about Clarence Thomas: “There’s no difference between a white snake and a black snake. They’ll both bite.” George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

REMEMBERING PATRICE LUMUMBA (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill We should remember to lift the spirit of some of our great ancestors who made significant contributions to the African Liberation Movement. July 2nd was the 87th birthday of one of these great heroes, Patrice Lumumba. The meaning of the life and

work of our beloved brother, Patrice Lumumba was rooted in his determination to fight against the forces of the European world in the most turbulent period of the history of the Congo. We should commemorate the birthday of this late, great African leader, who stood against all the forces in the European world and the African world who were steadfast in their efforts to stop the real Independence Movement of the people of the Congo. It is important for us to understand, today, that those who stand and fight against the evil of the European world take on a serious task and challenge. Herein lies the legacy of Patrice Lumumba. Patrice Lumumba was born July 2, 1925 in Katako Kombe, a small village in a remote area of the African continent, then referred to as the Congo. Born to a family of five and educated by missionaries, he was able to caste off the domination of European influences on his life and relate to the interests of the masses of Congolese people. At an early age, he recognized the need to develop the kind of skills necessary to become an active participant in the African Liberation struggle. In his efforts to develop his skills, Patrice had a variety of work experiences

that included his being employed in a hospital and a post office, which gave him greater insights into the overall oppression of the Congolese people. The more contact Patrice had with the European world, the more he developed the kind of political consciousness that made him one of the most important leaders in the African Independence Movement. As a result of his participation as the secretary in the Liberal Party of the Congo and his efforts to talk with the Belgian officials, Lumumba was able to see that independence and freedom for his people would not come through the efforts of the Liberal Party or negotiations with the Europeans. His outspokenness and determination to find a vehicle to free the Congolese people led to his being sentenced to two years in prison. Although his prison sentence was cut short, upon his release, the Belgian colonialists, along with their African servants, attempted to isolate Patrice from the growing independence movement of the masses of the people. In October 1958, Patrice helped form the National Congolese Movement, which was to become the forerunner in the liberation struggle. In December of 1958,

Patrice was invited to a conference of African nations hosted by Kwame Nkrumah in Accra, Ghana. It was through this conference that Patrice began to establish contact with the leaders of the Liberation Movements in other African countries. From this point forward, the Liberation Movement in the Congo escalated to the point that the Belgian government decided to grant the Congolese people their so-called freedom on June 30, 1960. At the Independence Day Ceremony on June 30th, while his African movement friends were thanking the Belgians for granting them their independence, it is said the Lumumba became enraged. He grabbed the microphone and told his people that the colonization of the Congo was nothing other than the domination of the European world over the African world. He went on to point out that the humiliating system of slavery, which was imposed upon the African people of the Congo by European forces was done because they were African. This statement by Patrice Lumumba caused the white world and their African servants to conspire in the next year to find a way to get rid of this most courageous spokesman for the in-

terest of the Congolese people. Patrice Lumumba was assassinated on January 17, 1961 at the hands of African mercenaries working in the interests of the Europeans through the United States and the CIA. This fact was recently revealed in Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney’s International Relations Hearings. Before his death, Lumumba wrote a letter to his wife that signified the essence of his involvement in the struggle to free his people. Patrice wrote, in part: “I want my children, who I leave behind and perhaps will never see again, to be told that the future of the Congo is beautiful and that their country expects them, as it expects every Congolese, to fulfill the sacred task of rebuilding on our independence, our sovereignty, for without justice there is no dignity and without independence there are no free men…Do not weep for me, my companion, I know that my country, now suffering so much, will be able to defend its independence and freedom.” In conclusion, we can say that the external enemies, (or the enemies from without), and internal enemies (or the enemies from within), led to the demise and death of Patrice Lumumba. But, fortunately, his legacy lives on.

Congress both gives and takes away opportunities to college students By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Cheers to the 112th Congress for holding interest rates on college loans down. Instead of doubling to 6.4 percent, the interest rate on federal college student loans will remain at the 3.2 percent level. However, this proviso is only in effect for one year. This time next year, congress will be waging the same fight. Young people, especially enrolled students and recent college grads, along with those who work in education, especially higher education, might want to think about these things when they head to the polls in November. Of course a man like Mitt Romney might ask why the entire population ought to subsidize loan rates for college grads that need to borrow to complete their educations. Why should we subsidize anybody? We subsidized the automobile industry with low cost loans because it helped us shore up our nation’s economic 6

strength. We subsidized banks with virtually no-cost loans because they were, supposedly, “too big to fail,” we subsidize homeowners by allowing them to deduct the interest costs of their loans. Why not subsidize the students whose college completion

Further, graduating students will have to pay their loans back as soon as they graduate, not with the six-month grace period they previously enjoyed. This makes no sense! Many students do not graduate with jobs already lined up; they graduate looking for jobs. So many have experienced job setbacks that they are moving back home with mom and dad, not out into the world. On top of survival costs, we are also saying that students have to start paying loans back immediately. Again, it has been a matter of public policy to delay loan payments for some subgroups of people. We have, for example, agreed to restructure mortgage rates for some mortgage holders; we have allowed large companies in trouble to both take out subsidized loans and also to delay repayment on them. We say we believe our young people are our future, but we hold them to harsher terms than we do corporations. Congress says their two moves will save the treasury $20

holds up our economic futures. President Obama says he wants our nation to lead the world in the percentage of our population

who has either an AA or a BA degree. We won’t do that unless we help students who come from low and moderate-income families with their college costs. Despite holding interest rates down, Congress has found other ways to hurt, not help, college students. Effective this Sunday, the federal government will no longer subsidize interest on loans. That means that if a student takes out a loan to pay for her education, she must IMMEDIATELY pay the interest on that loan. In the past, those interest costs were subsidized, and students did not have to worry about paying their loans back until after graduation. Students take out loans because they don’t have the money to pay for graduation. Many also work long hours to pay for things like books, food, and other costs. Now, we are planning to add interest rate payments to this burden. Congress might as well say “bah, humbug” to students, especially after they’ve chosen to keep interest rates down.

billion, and that in times of economic challenges they have to save every penny they can. But at what cost and to what end? If these increased costs push some students into deferring education, our nation is, in the long run, a loser. If some decide that a BA degree is enough, even though they were headed toward that science Ph.D., then we are all losers. This Congress has chosen to be extremely shortsighted, and to wrap their limited vision in incendiary rhetoric about budget balancing. I don’t blame this Congress. They have been empowered to behave poorly. I blame those voters who have selected these people as leaders. The misplaced priorities of this Congress are most clear when we look at their preoccupation with finding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. Our nation is worried about jobs, but Congress is mistakenly worried about wringing nonexistent or privileged documents from a (Continued on page 16) The Chicago Crusader

Ima aint saying it’s true and Ima ain’t saying it ain’t true but it do make some sense about Congressman Jr. Jesse Jackson and Megapastor for Boys Eddie Long being at the same seminar. Both men claiming they are trying to repair they marriages is taking time off from their jobs, probably with pay. But Ima just want to know is the title of the seminar “How to Quit Being a Ho?”

Last week was a mixed bag for President Barack Obammy. First, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Health Act, but the Congress found Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. The Romneyites and the Black-haters in Congress including Crying Butt Boehner was po’ed to say the least and swears that they’re going to repeal the Act. The problem is that a lot of folks their color

will be in trouble if the Act is repealed, but who cares it’s just poor people and those folks who are gouged by insurance companies if they are not a part of a big group. They were so mad that Boehner’s neck and face turned orange. It was an act of defiance when Democrats, except for the 17 insignificant and turncoats that voted with the Republicans, to find Holder in contempt, walked out of the Congress and did not vote. They numbered around 100. The Congress, led by the red necks of the Republican party, is CONTEMPTIBLE and DISGUSTING. By the way who asked Judy Barr Topinka’s, Illinois Comptroller, her opinion? The words was still hot that President Obammy was going to be at the Bud Billiken Parade when it was said it ain’t on his schedule. Now Laura Washington may have a point when she say that Obammy don’t want to be seen with his homies, but then I wondered who she was talking about. ‘Cause the University of Chicago heirachy don’t patronize the Bud Billiken parade, dey send the low rung folks to battle the hot sun or the rain that is known to sometimes come down so hard that it makes yu think Noah’s Ark is on the way. Most Black folks are losing their patience with how Barack is acting towars us’n and the Bud Billiken parade could cost him some votes, a lot of votes. But now Ima don’t like to say bad things about the President, but he sure is kinda distancing himself from folks of the darker hue. Overheard on 47th Street was the opinion of a man laying in the gutter that Obammy wouldn’t have been President of the United States if he had decided to try to pass for white!! Maybe, somebody needs to let him know what the gutter folks are saying.

BUSINESS

Governments seek to help minority businesses By Wendell Hutson The future of minority-owned businesses in Cook County and across the country are so grim that the deputy director for the U.S. Small Business Administration recently came to town to find out why. Recently, Peter Gibbs hosted a free business seminar at Chicago State University on the South Side for minority contractors and small businesses interested in learning more about competing for government contracts. And among the things discussed with a collage of minority-owned business owners were how to access financing, bidding on contracts, requirements to bid on government contracts, how to go from a subcontractor to a contractor, and how some businesses, such as security, could get bonded. Wanda Wright, a spokeswoman for CSU, said one purpose for the seminar was to further engage minority-owned businesses in the bidding process for city, county, state, and federal contracts many often do not apply, are unaware of or do not meet the requirements. The Chatham Business Association (CBA) on the South Side is one local association working with small business owners to assist them in getting “their fair share of the pie,” said Melinda Kelly, executive director. Mayor Rahm Emanuel met earlier this year with Kelly and members of the CBA to discuss how the city could help minorityowned businesses. He acknowledged past problems within the city and said he is addressing those issues. He pointed to the faster turn around time to receive a city-issued permit to begin construction, has been cut

to three months from six. Our goal is to help minorityand women-owned businesses grow to the point they can compete in the marketplace,” Emanuel added. In January the city announced a new program aimed at helping minority and women-owned businesses transition quickly from the city’s Minority and Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) program and into the marketplace. A thriving minority- and women-owned business community is essential in a world-class city, said Jamie Rhee, commissioner of the city’s Department of Procurement. And Chicago focuses on minority businesses through its MWBE Procurement program, which Rhee said is designed to meet annual goals for the participation of minority - and women - owned businesses in the city’s construction and non-construction contracts. “One of our top goals is making sure that minority- and womenowned businesses can grow and find a consistent, stable place in the market,” Rhee added. And last month Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle had announced a $200 million partnership she put together over the next three-to-five years with local lending institutions to help promote and strengthen opportunities with small, minority, and women owned businesses in Cook County. “Throughout my time in public office, it has been a top priority to promote and expand opportunities for small businesses, and minority and women-owned businesses,” explained Preckwinkle. “The Small Business Financing Initiative is bringing the county, lending institutions and small

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Jamie Rhee, the city’s chief procurement officer share a light moment during the meeting. businesses together to strengthen the economy throughout the region, while leveling the playing field for local businesses.” The county’s Small Business Financing Initiative is a commitment to award $200 million in county projects to small, minority, and woman-owned businesses over the next three to five years. And these projects are largely components of the Cook County’s Capital Improvement Program, the work projected from the Cook County Department of Highways and other work generated by the county, such as projects financed through Neighborhood Stabilization Program and HOME Investment Partnership Program funding. Preckwinkle added that one of the most significant hurdles for small businesses is accessing capi-

tal to finance projects and staffing at the early stages of a contract. So to remove that barrier, she also announced a partnership the county formed with lending institutions. Those lending institutions participants included JPMorgan Chase & Co., PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., U.S. Bank, Citibank, Fifth Third Bank, Wells Fargo & Company, Urban Partnership Bank, B.M.O. Harris Bank, N.A., Charter One Financial, and The Private Bank & Trust Company. In the last 18 months, several changes have been made to the county’s procurement code to facilitate faster payment to contractors and subcontractors, according to Preckwinkle. For example, previously there were five steps in the process re-

quiring board approval, but now board approval is required only at the contract execution stage for contracts of $150,000 or more. Additionally, she said the Cook County Office of Contract Compliance is better utilizing several tools, such as segmenting contracts, establishing contract-specific goals, and creating pre-qualification pools in order to ensure that participation goals are met, and in several cases, exceeded. According to Preckwinkle, several minority organizations, such as the African American Contractor’s Association, the Association of Asian Construction Enterprises, Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Black Contractors United, have endorsed the program.

AT&T’s 4G Network AT&T customers have access to the nation’s largest 4G network, covering more than 260 million people. According to recent thirdparty speed tests by PCWorld, AT&T 4G LTE speeds are faster than the competition. Testing in 13 cities showed that AT&T’s combination of 4G LTE and HSPA+ technologies delivered faster download speeds than any other carrier tested. “The world is moving faster, and at AT&T, we’re investing to give our customers mobile internet speeds that are faster, too. In fact, AT&T has invested more than $1

BUSINESS CFPB under assault: Non-bank lenders seek exemption Consumer advocates revive efforts to preserve Dodd-Frank Reforms By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist In the aftermath of a vigilant and successful effort to better protect consumer finances, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) faces a forceful effort to undermine its mission and operation. Even before CFPB reaches its first anniversary of operation, proposed federal legislation that would exempt a variety of nonbank lenders and has attracted 19 co-sponsors representing portions of Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. House Bill 1909, sponsored by California Representative Joe Baca (CA-43), would create a new federal charter for non-bank financial service providers to bypass CFPB. It would also preempt state consumer protection laws and rollback consumer gains nationwide. Already several states across the country have passed strong consumer protections against the very

same lenders this federal legislation would reverse. If enacted, non-bank lenders would no longer be subject to the federal Truth in Lending Act. Currently TILA requires disclosure of the cost of credit as an annual percentage rate (APR). The beneficiaries of this legislation would be a wide range of businesses that offer reloadable prepaid debit cards, payday and car title loans, rent-to-own agreements, pawn shops, check cashing services and more. On the losing side would be 30 million consumers who either have no bank account – the unbanked — or those who use very limited bank services – the underbanked. Further if enacted, a twotiered financial system would be created and the almost certain exploitation of consumers using these products. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Black consumers represent over 30 percent of underbanked households and more than 20 percent of unbanked. Black

Charlene Crowell consumers together with Hispanic, American Indian/Alaskan and consumers represent 56 percent of all unbanked households. Businesses that provide goods or services at a competitive and fair price earn a loyal customer base; they offer consumers value for their hard-earned dollars. Yet many nonbank financial services included in

HB 1909 have never been of this ilk. Instead, their ‘repeat business’ results from high fees that entrap customers into long-term debt. The irony is that these same ‘services’ were marketed as short-term transactions. Any financial product that leaves a consumer worse off financially than before can hardly be termed a ‘service.’ Fortunately, a number of consumer advocates are actively working to inform and oppose the renewed de-regulation efforts and include Americans for Financial Reform and U.S. PIRG. In announcing its opposition to HR 1909, the DC-based Consumer Federation of America, was as clear as it was direct. “We oppose any steps intended to remove non-bank lenders from the oversight of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.” In a recent letter to Capitol Hill lawmakers, the Center for Responsible Lending advised in part on HR 1909, “This shift exposes consumers and the financial services marketplace to the very dan-

gers that contributed to the economic crisis. The CFPB was created for the sole purpose of protecting consumers through oversight, rulemaking and enforcement of the rules for the very consumer financial products marketed and sold by the companies covered in this legislation.” Continuing CRL added, “Less than six months after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been fully operational with a director in place, H.R. 1909 or similar legislation would backtrack on Congress’ promise to consumers. These bills offer nothing new or beneficial for consumers – and removing consumer finance companies from CFPB oversight will set a precedent for many other companies to also seek to be excluded.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. So Many Choices . . . So Many Screens By Cheryl Pearson-McNeil NNPA Columnist

of y’all know what I’m talking about. Today, of course, we can watch video or media content whenever, wherever and however we want – on actual televisions that are connected to either cable,

in-between. However, even with all of these cool technological choices, the latest Cross-Platform Report revealed that television remains the platform of choice for watching content. Now, the television has certainly gone through a few facelifts, but it is still one of the main sources we use. The number of people who have HDTV sets grew by more than 8 million over the past year. Live and time-shifted TV reigns supreme; accounting for more than 33 hours of viewing per week on average among Americans. Our community, however, is not average as we continue to top those numbers. The study shows that African-Americans still over-index in traditional TV viewing, clocking more than 57 hours a week in front of our televisions. The average AfricanAmerican household also owns four or more televisions. Yes, this is great for darting from room to room without missing a beat of your favorite show; but, I personally stay super-glued to my comfy couch and only watch one of the four TV’s in the house. Even though all Americans watch more traditional television than any other platform, the Cross-Platform Report shows that traditional TV viewing actually declined one half of one per-

I’ve said it before – we are spoiled rotten. Reviewing Nielsen’s latest Cross-Platform Report, How We Watch from Screen to Screen, I can’t help but smile and remember the earlier days of “watching television.” (You, know the one screen, the only option we had). I suspect a good many of you sometimes get a bit nostalgic, too (even though now we probably would be hardpressed to part with any of our current technological conveniences). Before flat screens, HD, satellite, DVR, cable, hundreds of “channels” and the internet, plus a growing number of devices to watch “TV” – we had one, maybe two (if you were lucky) TV “sets” in the house. Before we had all of these fancy remotes, people actually got up to manually turn a dial to change stations, adjust the volume and turn the set on or off. Back then, which wasn’t actually all that long ago, there were maybe five broadcast stations – the three major networks ABC, CBS and NBC, followed by PBS and maybe an independent station or two which required a tweak of your TV antenna to achieve a clear picture, and you know the secret tool was that aluminum foil. I know a lot

telephone company or satellite subscriptions, game consoles or timeshifted viewing (DVR, ondemand and cloud-based DVRs); or on our computers, tablets or mobile phones through online streaming with Netflix, Hulu and other video apps. cent (or about 46 minutes per month) after consistent yearover-year growth. This is attributed to simply leveling off after a period of sustained growth, weather, economic factors or the plethora other viewing options available to us we’ve already named. Of our total monthly viewing time, all TV homes (including those with cable provider-enabled time-shifting and homes with DVRs) report watching 13 hours of timeshifted TV. In homes with DVRs only, that number jumps to 27 hours and 30 minutes per month. In the African-American community, those numbers are nearly 9 hours and just over 22 hours, respectively. Americans also watch video on our mobile devices, which are increasingly becoming mini, handheld TVs. Last time I mentioned, 54.4% of Blacks owned smartphones and 50.4% of U.S. mobile subscribers owned smartphones. And, of all American

smartphone owners, 33.5 million people now watch video on their phones—an increase of 35.7% since last year. Blacks, Hispanics and Asians all average four hours and 20 minutes a month of viewing on our smartphones. White Americans average three hours and 37 minutes a month watching video on their mobile devices. So, what does all of this mean? For one thing, it means the media industry may one day have to redefine the terms “TV household” and “TV viewer.” And, as I repeatedly try to remind us all, our choices mean that marketers are going to have to pay closer attention to our community and the significant combined buying power our choices represent. The operative word being power. Cheryl Pearson-McNeil is senior vice president of public affairs and government relations for Nielsen. For more information and studies go to www.nielsenwire.com.

Zora and Me is inspired by the early life of Neale Hurston. The novel, set in Eatonville, Florida, imagines Hurston’s life from about fourth to sixth grade. Reading the book gave Open Book participants a chance to meet and get to know the famous author. The Open Book Program focuses on stimulating interest in reading quality, culturally relevant children’s literature through a variety of activities including literary circles, drama, and internet experiences. During each program segment, participants do an in-depth study of one or two books. Authors and author/illustrators have included Sandra Belton, Ashley Bryan, Debbi Chocolate, Sharon Flake, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Nikki Grimes, Catherine Ingram, Jewell Parker Rhodes, M. LaVora Perry, Harriette Gillem Robinet, Charles R. Smith, Jr., Hope Anita Smith, Glennette Tilley Turner, Darwin MacBeth Walton, Walter Dean Myers, and Camille Yar-

The playground, the one hundredth installed in Chicago by KaBOOM!, will give children attending before- and after-school programs at Auburn-Gresham’s Lots of Love Community Center a safe place for unstructured physical activity and imaginative play. KaBOOM! works with community stakeholders and businesses like BlueCross, which donated the Lots of Love playground, to bring playgrounds to places where children have few opportunities for outdoor recreation. The building process, described as an “urban barn-raising,” brings together hundreds of local volunteers, community leaders and employees of generous businesses to install the playground in about six hours. “I am so pleased to see children

A PICNIC PROMOTING a safe summer and honoring five-year-old Torri Russell, who was not expected to live five years ago when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Robbins Trustee Tyrone Ward said Torri is seen as an inspiration to everyone. He added, “hundreds of people turned out in a collaborative effort and non-violent spirit to set the tone for Robbins’ summer.” There were free haircuts, food and entertainment. Torri is joined at the picnic (l-r) by Trustee Tyrone Ward, LaShawn Russell (Torri’s mother), and the owner of Debonair Cuts.

The exhibition Drawn from Photography, which opened at the DePaul Art Museum recently, showcases 13 artists who use drawing to meticulously translate images originally received through photo-based media or digital circulation. Free and open to the public, the exhibition runs through Aug. 19. Drawn from Photography is organized by The Drawing Center, New York, and curated by Claire Gilman. Drawings feature scenes of social transformation from the last two centuries, including scenes of war and protest as well as views of urban landscapes and industrial developments. Whether using found media sources or their own photographs, the artists share a recon-

structive, labor-intensive impulse that counteracts the rapid dissemination of information that defines the media age. More than any other art form, drawing is traditionally understood to be an inherently intimate and direct means of expression. Although re-creating images first made by a camera’s impersonal lens may appear to counter the drawn gesture’s authorial imprint, the work in Drawn from Photography can be seen as embodying its own kind of agency. In this presentation, personal attention and slowing down oppose the experience of alienation in a world increasingly mediated by technological representation. ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

The hats are king in Regina Taylor’s Crowns’ urban re-work at Goodman Anyone who has seen or heard about the newly produced Goodman production Crowns knows that the hats or crowns nearly steal the show. With much “hattitude,” Crowns traces the roots of Gospel music through contemporary hip hop, fusing rich storytelling into a stirring coming-ofage tale. This time, Taylor, who now lives in Chicago, re-imagines the play and addresses the pressing issue of violence that besets many neighborhoods, particularly the South Side’s Englewood community. When Englewood-born Yolanda is sent down South after the death of her brother, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her—and the powerful rituals connected to their dazzling hats. But how do those hats come to life for the women in the play? Karen Perry is the lady behind the hats and costumes, and she has been in costume design for more than 30 years. Perry is originally from Harlem, New York, but has been living in California for more than 10 years, and she says that the hats

upon whose heads they rest. “The crown hats are created especially for the characters in the play,” she told the Crusader during an exclusive interview. Many cultures, particularly in the Black community, are familiar with Sunday church scenes where women’s hats steal the show, often blocking the site of the pulpit from parishioners. Perry notes that not only in Black churches but historically men and women covered their heads while worshipping. But a woman who wears a hat during the workweek can be viewed as unique. “It’s a very special woman who wears a hat in a daily setting,” Perry said, “Not just on a special occasion.” Goodman Theatre Artistic Associate and “triple threat” playwright/director/actor Taylor has brought Crowns and all its splendor back to the Goodman stage for its 10th anniversary production. This time Crowns promises to be better than ever, and Taylor has engaged community partners and used workshops to explore and deepen the spoken word, dance and musical elements in the production. ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE (Continued from page 12) Marberry (a Chicago native who went to high school in Gary), with photographs by Michael Cunningham, Crowns has been called one of “America’s favorite plays” by the Wall Street Journal. Crowns runs through August 5, and the ensemble cast includes several “leading ladies” of the American theater: E. Faye Butler as Mabel; Felicia Fields (Tonynominated for The Color Purple) as Mother Shaw; Alexis Rogers as Jeanette; and Pauletta Washington (Denzel’s wife) as Wanda. Newcomers Jasondra Johnson (Velma) and Marketta P. Wilder (Yolanda) were cast from hundreds of hopefuls in Taylor’s open audition for emerging Chicago actors. But no matter how big the personalities or talent on stage, that all takes a back seat to the hats on display. Much talent and skill set were put into the making of the hats. However, as shown in the play, not every woman wears the same hat in the very same way. “Hats are very personal, and each woman brings her own swagger or style to whatever hat she is wearing at the moment,” Perry added. We meet Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) as a little girl with wild, very wild, curly red hair. She is very much loved by her mother Queen Elinor (voiced by Emma Thompson) and her big, brave, father King Fergus (voiced by Billy Connolly). During their outing they are attacked by a wild bear and the King proudly loses his leg, it makes for a great story of the King’s bravery at the dinner table and with the rest of the clan. The King vows to find the bear and fight him with his bare hands. A few years later, Princess Merida is exceptionally skilled with a bow and arrow, rides a horse with the wind, climbs tall rock formations to drink from waterfalls and the hair is even more red and unruly. She is also at the age where her mother feels it time for her to follow tradition and get married. And the messages that are passed down are sometimes what the younger generation needs to hear in order to sustain them and help them reach for their own stars. Perry views the global messages of the play as ones of fortitude and hope and ones that should rightly be told. She commends the outreach that Taylor has been doing within Chicago’s communities, especially among young people. “Someone, somewhere has to tell young people that they are worthwhile,” she said. “You don’t hear anything if you are constantly being told that you are nothing.” Perry says that young Saturday, July 7, 2012

Merida isn’t taking to the idea very well and declares she will join in the games to claim her own hand. You have guessed, the Princess and the Queen argue, Merida runs away, meets a witch and I will leave the rest for you to see for yourself. I like to see these types of films in a theater with children. The film, after all is for them. The children at the ICE Theaters on 87th street thoroughly enjoyed the film. They were quiet and attentive, laughed at the right spots, and clapped at the end. Their parents even relaxed to enjoy the message of the film, tucking it in the back of their minds when the little ones sitting next to them will come of age and challenge their wishes. I enjoyed the film enough to say SPEND THE MONEY and see it at the theater. Oh, and there is nudity, Merida’s three little brothers show their backsides. Cute! people, especially males, need role models, even if they meet that person only briefly. “Women just can’t raise boys to become men. And as a community, that is part of the chink in our armor (or in other words, there will always be a gap there). However, for both young men and women the question should be, if you want to be something, don’t you want to be something more?” The Goodman is located downtown at 170 N. Dearborn St. For tickets and also information about special lobby performances and other Crowns-related events, please call 312.443.3800. 13

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) we don’t tighten laws to cut off the spigot of handguns for gangs and the lawless. Finally, Chicago’s faith community’s clergy voices are too compromised to credibly speak truth to power. Sadly, our pastors get little respect. When clergy with institutional bases are too tied in with secular power and lack courage, poor and powerless people suffer without an effective advocate in the power dynamic. Eventually, everyone suffers when there are no prophets in the town. In Chicago, there are no credible, spiritual voices with the ability to call the leaders and the people into account. What Chicago needs most are restored values and a vision that includes all the people and every neighborhood. That kind of vision will always lead us to caring for the needs of the most vulnerable citizens first. Resources must be placed where they are needed most. In the city, the pathologies of the culture of poverty cannot be contained. No neighborhood will be entirely safe, until every neighborhood is safe. Let’s not get confused about CeaseFire 16

Dear Editor: It seems like after a trail of mistakes, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy is finally doing something right. Last week the department entered an agreement that will give the CeaseFire organization more than $1 million to work the city streets. This is a long overdue move. CeaseFire’s efforts have been substantially reduced over the last few years because of changes in Springfield, including reducing funding. Anyone who checks the stats will see that when the state’s funding for CeaseFire got slashed, shootings in the city rose, and they haven’t dropped since. For those who don’t know, CeaseFire employs ex-cons to intervene in disputes before they escalate to shootings. They are successful at this because they know the thugs and would-be shooters and those same people respect the fact these “interveners” have done time for manslaughter, murder and other serious crimes. The interveners’ time on the streets and in prisons give them a keen understanding that the average citizen or even veteran cops don’t bring. Entering into the contract with CeaseFire is the smartest thing the police superintendent can do now. The police department obviously is overwhelmed and have more to do than respond to serious crimes. Conversely that is all CeaseFire workers try to get in the face of. Saturday, July 7, 2012

But we all should understand that because the interveners have this understanding and skill does not mean they will be able to prevent every shooting. They are not mind readers. They simply stay in touch with these would-be shooters and know who has a beef with whom and how to get to them. We shouldn’t start complaining if the shootings don’t decline immediately. It took time for them to reach these levels. We don’t need to pay attention to cops who like to point out that three CeaseFire workers were arrested for crimes while on the CeaseFire payrolls. How many cops have been charged and convicted of much more serious crimes while on duty than the three CeaseFire workers? We need to applaud the fact that out of 400 interveners only three have been charged. The interveners, unlike the Guardian Angels or other “safety” groups don’t parade around en masse or in uniforms. They go about their work quietly and without drawing attention to themselves. It is time Chicagoans come to the reality that no one seems to have the answers to addressing the level of violence we’re experiencing. And no one has the record of success in dealing with past violence like CeaseFire. I am not dissing cops, just acknowledging there is an organization out there that can do a better job.

Coca-Cola awards $10,000 to West Lawn park for new soccer field Recreation grant made possible by the America Is Your Park campaign; encourages families and communities to get outside and play Summer is officially here in Chicago and what better way to enjoy extra hours of sun than a day at West Lawn Park. Thanks to CocaCola, park goers at West Lawn Park now have something else to be excited about. As part of the America Is Your Park campaign, Coca-Cola awarded a $10,000 recreation grant to the park for park improvements. Presented in front of more than 150 Chicago Park District (CPD) campers, community partners and public officials, CPD Superintendent Michael Kelly lauded the America Is Your Park campaign for helping encourage Chicago families to stay active this summer. “Chicago has more than 580 parks,” said Michael Kelly, Superintendent, Chicago Park District. “Grants like this one from the America Is Your Park campaign not only help to keep our parks open and provide the means to make park improvements, but they encourage us all to get outside and play.” West Lawn Park is considering using the grant for a much needed scoreboard or bleachers. West Lawn Park sits on 16.73 acres and features a gymnasium, fitness center, an auto shop, and multi-purpose clubrooms. Outside, the park offers an ice rink, batting cages, multi-purpose fields, a playground, sandbox and racquetball courts. “Parks are the anchors of our communities,” said Greg Babb, plant manager, Coca-Cola Refreshments. “They provide places for friends, families and neighbors to be active and enjoy the outdoors together. We are thrilled to provide

West Lawn with a recreation grant that will enhance the park and bring families and the community together.” How to Get Involved in America Is Your Park People can visit LivePositively.com/parks to vote for their favorite park to win the title of “America’s Favorite Park” and a $100,000 recreation grant. In addition to voting online, park supporters can earn even more votes by “checking in” from their favorite park. Voting started on May 23 and goes through July 15, 2012. The three parks that receive the most votes by July 15 will be awarded recreation grants in the following amounts: First Place – $100,000; Second Place – $50,000; and Third Place – $25,000. In addition, a $15,000 grant will be awarded at random to another park that places in one of the remaining top 25 spots. These recreation grants are provided to help restore, rebuild or enhance activity areas in parks where people can play and be active. The America Is Your Park campaign was developed in collaboration with the National Park Foundation, America’s State Parks and the National Recreation and Park Association.
