Police Officer ambushed in police parking lot and killed By J. Coyden Palmer A Chicago Police officer on a special assignment in the Englewood community was shot and killed allegedly with his own weapon after he was attacked by a man in the parking lot of a police facility Wednesday afternoon shortly before 4 p.m. Thor Soderberg, 43, had been on the force for 11 years. Soderberg was at a police facility at 61st and Racine that serves as the headquarters for a tactical unit in Englewood. The officer was part of a new program announced in April of this year to address issues of youth violence, dubbed Operation Project Youth, in which he spent one week out of the month patrolling on the streets. He primarily worked in the department’s education and training division at the po-

lice academy. Officer Soderberg had just ended his shift and was going to his vehicle when police say a man accosted him in the parking lot. “During the struggle the offender disarmed the officer and then fatally shot him,” said Assistant Deputy Superintendent James Jackson. “The entire Chicago Police Department would like to send their deepest condolences to the officer’s family, and we ask that you keep them in your prayers.” The suspect ran away from the scene and allegedly attempted to commit an armed robbery. But other officers who heard the initial shots caught up with him and a gunfight ensued. During that battle, the suspect was shot and is currently in serious condition at Christ Hospital in
Oak Lawn. At Crusader press time, police had no motive for the attack. However, they did say the suspect, who has yet to be identified formally, does have an extensive criminal record having been arrested some 21 times. Included in those arrests is a July 2006 incident in which the suspect shot his own brother. Those who know the suspect say he has some mental issues. “You will see him out here begging people for money and sometimes talking to himself,” said Chanice Walker, who lives in the area of the shooting. “I would stay away from him because I could tell something wasn’t right with him.” Officer Soderberg is the third officer killed within the last 13 months. Convenient and Easy smartKIOSK terminals installed Enables users to efficiently retrieve and print court call Information On Tuesday, June 29, Honorable Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, was joined by Honorable Timothy Evans, Chief Judge of Cook County Circuit Court, for the unveiling of six new smartKIOSK touch screen court call terminals that replace the
taped up, court call paper listings that previously covered a wall in the Cook County Criminal Court House lobby. Clerk Brown demonstrated how the easy and efficient touch screen technology of the kiosks enable users to retrieve their court call information in three easy steps: entering a name, selecting the name and printing. Printed on recycled thermal paper, the court information includes case number, court date and time, room location, judge’s name and charge(s). The information is available on the kiosk in three languages: English, Spanish and Polish. “I am pleased to announce the availability of the smartKIOSK terminals at the Criminal Courthouse at 26th and California. By replacing the cumbersome paper listings with these energy efficient machines, we are seeing ‘green’ court technology in action,” said Clerk Brown. Cook County Court Chief Judge Timothy Evans applauded Clerk Brown and the Clerk’s Office for installing the new technology that improves court services for the people of Cook County. Clerk Brown said, “These modern and attractive kiosks replace the unsightly and cumbersome taped-up, court call paper listings
that typically contained 800 to 1,000 case docket numbers, and used to be attached to the wall where court users had to jostle to the front of the crowd to read their court information.” The kiosks are designed to electronically collect data from the Clerk’s Office’s court docket
nightly so accurate records are ready for retrieval daily. “The touch screen technology and the provision of a printed record on recycled thermal paper certainly facilitate the process by which court users obtain their important criminal court call in-
formation,” Clerk Brown added. Clerk Brown was joined at the press conference by her staff and by the CEO and the vice president of smartTECHS.net, the Hispanic MBE IT firm that partnered with the Clerk’s Office on the design and installation of smartKIOSK.

South Side hospitals and clinics split $5.1 million award settlement By J. Coyden Palmer & Konesha Rhea In front of a crowd at the Chicago Family Health Center on the city’s southeast side Tuesday morning (July 6), Illinois’ Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced that the health center, along with three other medical centers and five South Side not-for-profit hospitals will share in a $5.135 million settlement. The money comes from a $7 million judgment against the University of Chicago Medical Center. Under the terms of the agreement, the $5.135 million in settlement funds were directed to not-for-profit hospitals and health care clinics to deliver preventive preconception, prenatal and maternal health care services to low-income women in some of the city’s neediest communities. Holy Cross Hospital, St. Bernard Hospital and The Mercy Foundation, which is the hos2
pital and medical clinic, each received $725,783.89. While Jackson Park Hospital Foundation received $600,656.02 and Roseland Community Hospital received $500,539.27. Both Christian Community Health Center and Mile Square Health Center received $575,622.67 each, while the Chicago Family Health Center received $710,767.21. “We are very grateful to Attorney General Lisa Madigan. This money will go to help countless of women in need of healthcare, as research has proved a healthy mom equals a healthy baby,” stated Evelyn Jones, Chief Nurse Officer for St. Bernard Hospital. Workers and administrators aren’t the only ones happy. Patients say the services provided by these non-profit health facilities are vital for the well-being of the community. “I’m very grateful at this time when it is hard to get insurance that myself and my kids are able Saturday, July 10, 2010
to get the healthcare that we need,” said Daisy Guerado, a patient of Chicago Family Health Center. Roseland Community Hospital’s new President, Catherine Nichols explained: “The money received from the settlement will go to a newly created program that will enhance and supplement the services provided in their long-term grant partnership with Catholic Charities’ WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) office.” The WIC program provides educational, nutritional and a monthly food stipend to women in need. The case stemmed from a 2006 lawsuit that alleged the U of C Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (“NICU”) violated Illinois licensing regulations by exceeding its licensed capacity by routinely placing two or more NICU patients in bed
spaces designed for one infant. Madigan explained that, “it was the NICU practice to place the units too close together.” The violations were first brought to the Attorney General’s attention by two former Medical Center employees. Since the case was filed, the University of Chicago has completed the expansion of the
NICU in the Comer Children’s Hospital. Also part of the settlement agreement, the U of C has permanently ceased such violations and will adhere to a specific enforcement procedure, in addition to paying $500,000 to the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.

NEWS Madigan sues Countrywide for discrimination against African American and Latino borrowers Alleges African American and Latino Homeowners Paid More for Their Mortgages than They Should Have Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced today that she has filed a lawsuit against Countrywide, a subsidiary of Bank of America, for unlawfully discriminating against African American and Latino borrowers in home mortgage sales, in violation of the Illinois Human Rights Act and the Illinois Fairness in Lending Act. The Attorney General filed her complaint in Cook County Circuit Court against Countrywide Financial Corporation; Countrywide Home Loans, Inc.; and Full Spectrum Lending, Inc., an arm of Countrywide that mostly sold subprime loans. Madigan’s complaint alleges that the former mortgage giant steered African American and Latino borrowers into risky subprime mortgages more often than similarly-situated white borrowers. The complaint also alleges that minority borrowers paid more for mortgages across Countrywide’s product line, including its prime loans. Significantly, Madigan’s analysis of Countrywide loan data found that the racial disparities could not be explained by objective factors, such as borrowers’ credit scores or debt-toincome ratios. At the height of the housing bubble, Countrywide was the largest mortgage lender in the country and in Illinois. Countrywide was also the state’s top seller of subprime loans. Bank of America bought Countrywide in 2008. The failure of millions of highercost, or subprime, mortgages nationwide is largely responsible for trigger-
Attorney General Lisa Madigan ing the ongoing foreclosure crisis and resulting economic recession. “Countrywide’s illegal discriminatory lending practices destroyed the wealth and dreams of thousands of African American and Latino homeowners,” Madigan said. “Bank of America needs to be held accountable by taking financial responsibility for cleaning up the devastation of the predatory company that it chose to take over.” Madigan’s lawsuit is the result of a two-year investigation of Countrywide’s lending policies and practices that were in place during the years directly preceding the collapse of the housing market. The Attorney General issued a fair lending subpoena to Countrywide in March 2008, after a Chicago Reporter study of federally collected mortgage lending data for the Chicago area found that, in 2006, Country-

wide Financial Corporation sold higher-cost loans to 50.9 percent of its African American borrowers and 33.8 percent of its Latino borrowers, while only 19.5 percent of the company’s white borrowers received high-cost loans. The Attorney General’s investigation included a statistical analysis of data from over 83,000 Countrywide mortgages originated in Illinois from 2005 through 2007. Madigan’s office also interviewed former Countrywide employees and mortgage brokers, and spoke with Countrywide borrowers about their home loans. As outlined in the complaint, Madigan’s analysis of Countrywide’s loan data found that the odds that African American and Latino borrowers would receive a higher-cost subprime mortgage from Countrywide were three times greater than those of white borrowers. In addition, Madigan’s investigation found that Countrywide charged African American and Latino borrowers higher interest rates and fees on loans spanning the company’s range of products, including its prime products, as compared with similarly-situated white borrowers. Madigan’s investigation further found that the disparities in Countrywide’s subprime sales and loan pricing were the result of Countrywide policies that gave employees and mortgage brokers almost unlimited discretion in the selection and pricing of loans. “It’s disturbingly clear that if you were an African American or Latino borrower who walked into a Countrywide store, you likely paid more for your mortgage than a white borrower,” Madigan said. “Countrywide effectively imposed a surcharge on mortgage loans based on race and ethnicity.” The Attorney General’s lawsuit asks the court to find that Countrywide engaged in a pattern and practice of discrimination, enter an in-

junction against Countrywide to permanently prohibit the company from discriminatory acts as described in the complaint, make restitution to all victims of Countrywide’s discrimination, pay civil penalties of $25,000 for each violation of the Illinois Human Rights Act, and order any other relief that the court deems equitable. This filing is the second lawsuit Madigan has brought against Countrywide. In 2008, she filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against the lender for its major role in driving the foreclosure crisis, and in November 2008, she led negotiations that resulted in an $8.7 billion settlement of that lawsuit with Bank of America. Today’s filing is also the second fair lending lawsuit Madigan has brought against a major mortgage lender. In July 2009, Madigan filed a lawsuit against Wells Fargo for violating the state’s fair lending and civil rights laws, becoming the first state attorney general in the nation to sue a federallychartered lender for its role in creating the foreclosure crisis. The Wells Fargo litigation is ongoing. Countrywide Steered Minority Borrowers to Subprime Loans Specifically, Madigan’s complaint alleges that Countrywide’s retail employees and mortgage brokers had the discretion to choose the type of products offered to borrowers and to manipulate borrowers’ financial information that was entered into the company’s automated underwriting system. As a result of this discretion, the complaint alleges, minority borrowers were steered into subprime mortgages when they qualified for prime loans. The Attorney General further alleges that Countrywide failed to institute an adequate system for automatically referring eligible borrowers from subprime to prime. Although the company added an “Uplift” protocol to its underwriting system in 2002 to supposedly prevent prime-eligible borrowers from being placed into subprime loans, Madigan alleges that the Uplift program failed as a safeguard because it depended on a combination of automated underwriting and human discretion. When interviewed by Madigan’s office, former Countrywide employees and brokers reported that they had rarely or never seen subprime loans uplifted to prime. Minority Borrowers Paid More for Countrywide Loans Madigan’s complaint alleges similar abuses of discretion in the pricing of Countrywide’s loans. As outlined in the lawsuit, Countrywide provided employees and brokers with rate sheets that spelled out the mortgage interest rates borrowers Saturday, July 10, 2010
qualified for, based on certain credit factors. However, Madigan found that Countrywide gave employees and brokers discretion to sell borrowers loans with higher interest rates than those indicated by the rate sheets. The complaint also alleges that Countrywide’s broad discretionary pricing policies allowed employees and brokers to use a number of devices to increase the interest rates on loans. These included manipulating the amount of cash a borrower took out on a refinance, which would increase the loan-to-value ratio, and adding features to the loan such as a prepayment penalty or an adjustable interest rate. Countrywide’s Compensation Structure Incentivized the Sale of Subprime and High-Cost Loans In addition to Countrywide’s discretionary policies, the Attorney General alleges that the company’s compensation structure provided employees and mortgage brokers with incentives to steer prime-eligible borrowers into subprime loans and to sell loans with the highest interest rates possible. As cited in the complaint, Countrywide provided those incentives by linking compensation to volume of sales, paying employees more for originating subprime loans, basing compensation in part on the interest rate of the loan, and paying brokers a premium for loans with features associated with subprime mortgages. Countrywide Aggressively Marketed its Loans to Minority Borrowers Additionally, Madigan alleges that early in the last decade Countrywide began aggressively marketing its services and products to a so-called “emerging market” of untapped borrowers, namely African Americans and Latinos. Minority borrowers thus became the targets of Countrywide’s new marketing strategy at a time when the company’s compensation structure was increasingly incentivizing the sale of risky subprime loans. The complaint alleges that as a result of these events, African American and Latino borrowers disproportionately suffered the harmful effects of Countrywide’s toxic loans, and these effects were magnified by Countrywide’s discretionary product selection and pricing policies. Illinois homeowners who believe they may be victims of Countrywide’s discriminatory lending practices should contact the Attorney General’s office via a special e-mail address at CountrywideDiscrimination@atg.state.il.us or by calling the Attorney General’s Homeowners Helpline at 1-866-544-7151. 3

EDITORIAL WE SHOULD WELCOME DIVERSITY IN BLACK ART Recently, in an online Black Voices article entitled Are Tyler Perry’s Movies Bad for Black America? No, They Are Not, by Boyce Watkins, PhD, the question was raised about the merits, or lack thereof, of movies and sitcoms created by this masterful entrepreneur. Apparently, a lot of the controversy was generated by an Aaron McGruder cartoon that satirized Perry in a very unfavorable manner. Aaron McGruder is the creator of the wildly successful Boondocks comic strip and animated series. Spike Lee has also criticized Perry. Tyler Perry’s art strikes home in the hearts of many African Americans. If that were not the case, he would not have garnered the wild success that he has. Some criticize him because his work is seen as simple, stereotypical, and even (incredibly) exploitative. Tyler Perry’s movies run the gamut from the “Madea” series to movies such as Why did I get Married, which portrayed a slice of life among accomplished Black people experiencing the trials and tribulations of married life, to A Family that Preys, featuring a truly dramatic plot. Perry’s movies always have a “message” that is designed to teach a moral lesson. Sometimes they can be schmaltzy, but it is refreshing to see a Black man creating something designed to uplift the community rather than tear it down. Aaron McGruder, the creator of Boondocks, is also a very talented Black artist. His characters capture the dynamic tension that comes from the interplay of a wide variety of character types. However, his offerings are liberally sprinkled with profanity and the seamy side of life. Moreover, his character, Uncle Ruckus, presents a stereotypic self-hating Black man that is arguably over the top. McGruder is known for criticizing other Blacks in his comic strips and in his animated features. His work, like Perry’s, is widely appreciated by certain segments of the Black community. Tyler Perry’s movies are upbeat and do not tear down fellow Blacks, as does cartoons created by Aaron McGruder. That’s why it is surprising that so many Blacks have jumped on the “playa hate Tyler Perry” bandwagon. Some of McGruder’s work can be so scathing that it can make hair stand on end. Freedom of speech, however, allows him the right to create what he wants to create. This also goes for Perry. The fact is that the Black community is not monolithic - it takes all kinds to make the Black world go around. Each creator has his audience, as evidenced by the success of these artists. If Tyler Perry weren’t relevant, we would not even know about his work. The same goes for McGruder. It is far past the time that Black people should cease playing a crabs in a barrel game; in fact, Black people need to burst out of the barrel altogether and encourage self-expression wherever it is found, especially if it is positive. And by the way, Boyce Watkins concluded, in so many words, that there is room for diversity in Black creativity. Good for him! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Business is the key to our success Dear Editor: I feel at a time like this when many people are being laid off their jobs we should think of what the United States Department of Labor stated about how many jobs a billion dollars spent can create. They stated a billion dollars spent will create an average of 50 thousand jobs some of the many unemployed Blacks if we spent our money with Black owned business by getting Blacks to repair our buildings, do our plumbing and electrical work, eat at Black owned restaurants, take our clothes to Black owned cleaners, buy our cosmetics from Black salespersons, have our lawns cared for by Blacks, and save our money at Black owned banks, credit unions, savings and loan associations, and use the service of Black insurance agents. If we would do as I am suggesting we could bail ourselves out of the condition we are in. One of the greatest institutions we have is the church, but we are not making the fullest use of them. We should become as much concerned in building business as we did in building
schools when we didn’t have any. But it was the former slave masters who told us to not get involved in business. We were told that God intended for whites to own the business and Blacks worked for them. Even today whites are doing things to keep Blacks out of business. We started off after slavery with more churches because that was the only thing the white man would give a license for. Even today Blacks can get money for a church much easier than we can for business. That is to keep us from going into commercial business by helping us to go into church business.

Afghanistan War – It Ain’t Working By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist Denial is not a river in Egypt (Nile). It is a condition where we allow a problem to exist and fester into a cancerous state that will cause incredible damage and harm
Harry C. Alford to our culture. It will eat at our national security and economy. Such is the situation with the war in Afghanistan. What we have done is the exact same thing that was done by the old Soviet Union in
1980. It got into a war that it could not win and refused to face that reality until it drained their armed forces of precious soldiers and morale. More importantly it helped break the economic back of the Soviet Union which would later be dismantled. The fact is no one has defeated the land commonly referred to as Afghanistan. Alexander the Great could not do it in 250 B.C. The great Genghis Khan marched all the way to the German border during the middle ages but had to go around Afghanistan. We, the United States and few others, are being naïve and completely bullheaded about the fact that we can’t win this war. How many more precious lives and billions of dollars do we have to spend before we too, like the others, will turn away embarrassed and defeated. One important factor is that this land is not a true nation. Its perceived borders have been set by the British colonialists. They have grouped people of various cultures, languages and governmental structures. They do not live as one and no matter who we put in power like a puppet, the majority of the
other tribes will resist and disrespect. The leadership of each sect and the economy of each are local and not organized. It is no country despite what we and the past colonialists want to make it. The current literacy rate of the area is less than 10 percent which means there will be no organized industry, working class or political leadership in the future and perhaps we are centuries away from that. There are many languages spoken by the people. Most speak the two most popular languages – Pashto and Dari (quite similar to Farsi, the Iranian language). Right now, the biggest foe of ours is the Taliban. They were once our ally who we armed and encouraged to fight the Soviet Union. After we let them go, they hooked up with Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden and pointed their guns at the United States. The Taliban live in several nations - they propped up Afghanistan, Pakistan and a little taste of Iran. They roam all three areas and consider it their home. They are much like the Kurds. Kurdistan, not a country, is located in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran and it is a thorn in the sides of all four
nations. Such is the way of the tribes of Afghanistan. They fight foreigners and if they aren’t around they will fight each other. There is no true centralized government. What we have there now is a group of gangsters headed by the Karzai family which rapes, steals and exploits every level of culture and economic venue. The biggest drug dealer in the nation is none other than the current President’s brother. It is corrupt from top to bottom and they don’t really care much for us except for the protection we provide them from their everlasting enemie. We should think of Afghanistan as we do Somalia. It is a perpetual war zone with no peace coming anytime soon. We are fooling ourselves if we think we can make it happen. Yes, we got into this mess as a result of the attack on New York and the Pentagon (9/11). Rightfully we were mad and wanted big revenge. First we wanted Bin Laden and the destruction of Al Qaeda. We haven’t gotten Bin Laden but Al Qaeda is certainly on the run and out of Afghanistan. The vast majority of us, including myself, were
hell bent on going to Afghanistan and kick some major Jihad butt. Everyone in Congress voted on the war but one, the Honorable Barbara Lee. History shows she was right. We moved with our hearts and madness not with wisdom. Congresswoman Lee is the daughter of an Army officer and was born in a military hospital at Ft. Bliss, Texas. She knows the deal when it is necessary and reasonable. We did not. We scorned her and jumped into this pile of “quick sand” like so many other empires have done. It is time to go. The land will continue to be what it is. The corruption has been around for many decades and all we are doing is trying to make it into something that it is not. It is not our first mistake – Vietnam for one. The sooner we leave the fewer precious lives we will not have to donate to this wretched place. Bring our troops home! The Marshall Legacy Shows What Supreme Court Justices Should Be By Ron Walters NNPA Columnist At Elena Kagan’s Senate nomination hearings to be the next Supreme Court Justice, I admit to being somewhat surprised when Senator Kyle saw her clerkship with Justice Thurgood Marshall as an opening to define her as being a potentially “activist judge.” Although conservatives had often made that charge, they had not been explicit in naming justices they believed acted in that manner. Although Senator Dick Durbin strongly defended Marshall’s legacy, his role as a judge who understood the impact of the law on people should be emphasized. I first met Thurgood Marshall in 1959 when he was a special guest at the Race Relations Institute at Fisk University. As a former NAAC Youth Council leader growing up in Kansas, I was enthralled by his exploits that he shared with us, especially the triumph of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. But I will never forget his vivid description of the “massive resistance” movement then underway where Southerners were openly defying the dictate of the highest Court in the land to integrate educational institutions. The Chicago Crusader
It seems that the “activist judges” on the Warren Court had destroyed Plessey V. Ferguson (1896) which allowed racial segregation on the basis of a “separate but equal” standard. Marshall and his colleagues had exploded the myth that racial separatism could be done with equality in America and as such, upset the social frame of reference in the South and other places. So, the angst of modern conservatives can be traced all the way back to the Supreme Court decision in Brown and it suggests to us the kind of America they wanted to preserve. Rand Paul, the current Republican candidate for Senator of Kentucky said it plainly that the First Amendment right to free association in the Constitution trumps others, which gives private establishments the right to decide whom they want to serve. The other problem they have with Justice Marshall is his unrelenting criticism of the growing conservatism of the Court that challenged the recent victories of the Civil Rights movement. The 1978 Bakke case found racial setasides unconstitutional and his dissent asserted that “bringing the Negro into the mainstream of American life should be a state interest of the highest order” and cautioned that failing to do so
Ron Walters would forever make America a divided society. When Nixon-appointed Chief Justice Warren Burger made a speech elevating the rights of victims as a new conservative direction of the court in February of 1981, Marshall struck back in a brilliant speech that May, “The Sword and the Robe,” in which he talked about the role of judging in humanistic terms, saying at one point: “We have seen what happens when the courts have permitted themselves to be moved by prevailing political pressures and have deferred to the mob rather than interpret the

Constitution,” naming Dred Scott, Plessey and others. His role in opposition to this movement earned him the status of “the great dissenter,” as he fought a furious battle to keep the legacy of civil rights alive with more than 150 dissenting opinions. The coming of conservative governments, beginning with Ronald Reagan however, presented such a challenge to the legacy of civil rights that he often spoke out publicly, saying in a 1989 interview that, “I wouldn’t do the job of dogcatcher for Ronald Reagan.” In another place he said about George (H. W.) Bush, that, “…if you can’t say something good about a dead person, don’t say it. WelI I consider him dead.” When the Rehnquist Court came about, Marshall was still fighting, because this “activist court” struck down equality in minority contracting in Richmond v. Croson in 1989. In doing so, it voided the precedent of the Fullilove case (1980) which held establishing the minority set-aside program was a constitutional exercise of Congressional power. After Marshall retired, in the 2003 Michigan cases the Court was “activists” in virtually eliminating Affirmative Action by voiding the precedent of Weber (1979) which found that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 did not Saturday, July 10, 2010
prevent employers from favoring women and minorities. A delicious irony here is that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was a leader in striking down some of these past precedents that upheld the legacy of civil rights, but when Justice Marshall retired in 1992, she confirmed the fact that his role – and by inference other justices -on the High Court was not just to mechanically interpret the Constitution, but in doing so to bring about justice. In a moving tribute to him, she said in part: “His was the eye of a lawyer who saw the deepest wounds in the social fabric and used law to heal them. His was the ear of a counselor who understood the vulnerabilities of the accused and established safeguards for their protection. He was the mouth of a man who knew the anguish of the silenced and gave them a voice.” He was an activist for justice, but then, this is what Supreme Court JUSTICES should be. THE AFRICAN CENTERED CURRICULUM AND REPARATIONS (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)) As we prepare for the Thirty-first Annual Convention of the National Black United Front, we must address the question of the African Centered Curriculum and the Reparations Movements. The NBUF Convention will be held in Kansas City, Missouri from July 22-24, 2010 at the African Centered Education Collegium Campus, 6410 Swope Parkway. Part of our repair as an African people is the continued struggle to organize to challenge the teaching of African and Africans in America history in the public schools of America. This should be high on
Dr. Conrad Worrill the agenda of the Reparations Movement. Throughout the development of education in the western world, the idea of transmitting knowledge has been done through what is called a curriculum. It is through this curriculum that people are taught the values, concepts, principles, and theories that undergird the basic philosophy of any agreed upon knowledge. This agreed upon knowledge is called a discipline. In the late 1960s, the Black Liberation Movement charged American educational institutions as being racist and white supremacist. One of the movements that developed as a result of these charges was the call for a more accurate and thorough recognition of the contributions of Africans in 6
America and African people worldwide to be included in the curriculums of elementary, secondary, and higher education. This movement became known as the Black Studies Movement. Throughout America, particularly on college campuses and high schools, battles unfolded for the revision of curriculums that were racist in their interpretations of history and its impact on African people. The demands of the Black Liberation Movement were so forceful (in some instances buildings were seized by students demanding Black Studies be taught at their schools) that many universities began to develop Black Studies programs. On the secondary and elementary level in many school districts throughout the United States task forces were developed to study, evaluate, and recommend changes in public school curriculums regarding the contributions and history of African people in the world. It has been well over thirty years since the call was made for Black Studies and since the first Black program was established at San Francisco State University, after months of intense battle by African in America students with university officials. During this current climate of so-called educational reform very little discussion has taken place regarding the continued racism and white supremacy of American public school curriculums. The great movement of the 1960s and 70s put the issue of Black Studies on the American agenda, but like many issues of the 1960s, they have either fallen by the wayside or have been put on the backburner. The concern has shifted from what is being taught to African in America children to the problems with skill development in reading and math. There must be a balance in our concerns not just regarding skill development but for what is taught. To have African in America children skilled and proficient at reading and math, but having no idea of who they are or where they came from will repeat the historical errors of education that Carter G. Woodson so in-
sightfully discusses in his 1933 publication of The Mis-Education of the Negro. We must not abandon the struggle to demand that the public school curriculums in America be changed to reflect an accurate interpretation of the history, culture, and contributions of African people in math, science, language arts, art, and social studies. At the Ninth National Convention of the National Black United Front (NBUF) in 1988, in Kansas City, Missouri, the decision was made to place education as a major priority in our National Plan of Action in the work that NBUF carries out in all of its chapters. NBUF drew on the success of the Portland Chapter members of NBUF who were able to organize the African in America community in Portland to demand significant changes be made in what is called the baseline areas of the curriculum as it relates to African people. Some of the best African minds in the world, such as our distinguished ancestors Dr. John Henrik Clarke and Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III were brought in as consultants to help rewrite the curriculum of the Portland Public Schools. This document has become known as “The Portland Model” and has been implemented selectively in other school districts around the country, particularly in cities where there are NBUF Chapters. However, we are still at the embryonic stages of its implementation. NBUF maintains that, “The issue of education when properly approached is a mass issue that when won will have a mass impact on the minds of millions of Black youth and thousands of Black youth locally. Portland NBUF has demonstrated that a well organized Black community behind a core of dedicated NBUF members can force local school boards to adopt an African Centered Program of curriculum change along with other changes that will be called for in each locality.” For the sake of our children, we must take on this challenge as we continue to build the Reparations Movement.

Reality Check Why President Obama Will Not Seek Re-Election By A. Peter Bailey NNPA Columnist The conflict between the Obama Administration and General Stanley McChrystal re-enforces my belief that President Obama’s chance of being re-elected president of the United States in 2012, is probably slimmer than those of his being elected to the office in 2008. In fact, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that President Obama, after the 2010 elections, will announce that he will not seek a second term. My position is based on a belief that the biggest cause of the harsh economic dislocation that has gripped this country for the past three or four years is not that working class and middle income people couldn’t or wouldn’t pay their mortgages; it is the humongous cost of the wars of choice in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is very revealing how most members of the press and politicians who regularly write or speak about adverse economic conditions rarely, if ever, comment on the cost of those wars despite the fact that no economy in the world can deal with the burden caused by fighting two wars for nearly ten years. In the beginning those wars may have helped segments of the U.S. economy but as they drag on and on, they become very damaging. The Big Boys who run this country, no matter which political party controls the White House and Congress, have now decided that the debilitating wars in Iraq and Afghanistan must be brought to an end. They are acutely aware that the only way the U.S. can achieve a military victory in Afghanistan is either to bomb the country into oblivion or flood it with 300,000 soldiers on the ground for the foreseeable future. Neither option is economically feasible so they will do exactly what they did in the cases of Korea and Vietnam - - get out while the gettin’ is good. Of course, if those super patriots who bellow that the wars are vital to U.S. national security would either enlist to fight them or send their children off to fight, that would easily sustain such a military occupation. The Big Boys know that there is absolutely no way Obama can halt the wars without inciting the real possibility of dire consequences launched by those Whites who already believe that his being in the White House is a violation of the natural order of things racial. It would be difficult for even a White civilian president to stop the wars without

being branded as a traitor by frenzied sources. President Harry Truman was unable to bring the troops home from Korea; former General Dwight Eisenhower had to do it. For a Black president to do would be met with vicious, shrill invective from propagandists in the press and in Congress, most of whom are talk-the-talk but won’t walk-the-walk chicken hawks. Bill Kristol, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Rich Lowery, Ann Coulter, Laurie Ingraham and their cohorts are classic examples of the despicable genre. For this reason, it is fairly certain that the next president of the U.S., the one who will close down the economically draining wars, will either be a retired military man or a politician who is very, very tight with the military. This probably won’t be the reason given publicly for Obama’s not seeking re-election. What will probably be put forth is that he’s doing so for the sake of his two daughters who must be at least somewhat aware of the bitter, intense, often race-driven hostility directed toward their father. If they were younger, they wouldn’t understand what is going on; if they were older, it could be explained to them. But they are at those very impressionable ages where they may be aware of what’s happening but not old enough to understand it. The elegant and intelligent Michelle Obama strikes me as a loving and caring mother for whom being “First Lady” is not worth the torment that may be inflicted on the psyche of her daughters. The Obamas’ place in history is already assured no matter what their rabid detractors do or say. Journalist/Lecturer A. THE GUN DEBATE As I have listened to the powers that be about who should and who should not carry weapons, I’ve come to the following conclusions. The Constitution is damned. All those that have guns now that are not in Law Enforcement got one. From age three to let’s say thirty. Killing anyone they want and never being caught. Where are they getting theirs? I was on the fence on this one until two senior citizens saved themselves by killing home invaders. It’s gotten to the point that driving to any destination can prove to be fatal. So, let everybody have one. You allow anybody to reproduce. Thus, you have a litany of group homes paid for by tax dollars. The mayor who spearheads this debate and wants to pass ordinances so that certain people won’t be able to get one will never get it. Since he popped out of his mama he has been surrounded by guns. He doesn’t have a clue about getting out of your car with bags and getting stuck up. He doesn’t have to entertain that thought. He provided the same protection to all his family members. The rest of us have buried family members from some form of violence. The way I see it we lost. We allowed a people to tell us we free and we not. BET set the standard for our demeanor. Ministers tell us to hold on to the word. Fathers are baby daddies and mothers are baby mamas. Big mama is nearly thirty and trying to drop it like it’s hot. Males have been attracted to guns since John Wayne. We bought them play guns as children. We allowed them to think that Tupac and Biggie were real niggahs. All that money and you still on bullshit. Disrespect is being looked at funny. This warrants being shot at. The police shoot you cause you running and everybody think if the police can do it why can’t I? Chicago is famous for guns. People know more about Al Capone than Malcolm X. This is our educational piece. Daley. This man got it made. He tore down the projects because the police couldn’t penetrate them. hoods that black people had a vested interest in, after he stole the low end (47th, 35th, 39th) in the name of re-gentrification. What did you expect? You placed people together that could not live on the same block. Now they live next door to each other. The police can’t just whup your child’s ass right in front of your face no more. Tax payers get ready to pay up, the shit about to hit the fan. Maybe this will make all these fake politicians do the right thing. For sure the mayor will add to his security team. -ImaWHAT HAPPENED MR. MARKETING GENIUS?

Is your home fully insured? In case of disaster, would you have enough coverage to rebuild just as it was? *** Truth is, approximately 64 percent of homes in the U.S. are underinsured by approximately 19 percent. This means that if your coverage for rebuilding is $200,000, and costs are 19 percent higher, you could be out of pocket $38,000—plus your deductible. *** Yes, your home’s market value probably has dropped during the recent downturn, but that doesn’t mean you need less coverage. Rebuilding costs generally go up, despite the market. *** A guaranteed replacement-cost policy is expensive and hard to find. Look for an extended replacement-cost policy that pays a set amount plus a 20 to 25 percent margin. Do opt for a building-code endorsement to cover complying with future rule changes. *** Document what you own with records and videos, model numbers and such. And review your coverage every few years. ***

BUSINESS U.S. House passes Wall Street Reform, Senate Action Expected Mid-July By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer The recent passing of the longest-serving U.S. Senator in our nation’s history delayed a final vote on the future of financial reform crafted by a joint Capitol Hill conference committee. Memorial services on Ju-
Charlene Crowell ly 1 honored the late Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia and his service of more than 50 years and spanned 11 presidential administrations. However on the House side, the business of financial reform moved one step closer to becoming reality. On June 30, the U.S. House of Representatives successfully passed the historic reform package on a 237-192 vote. Commenting on the key vote, Nancy Zirkin, executive vice president of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued a formal statement.
“Years of deregulation have resulted in a financial system that privatized the gains and socialized the losses said Ms. Zirkin. “The Dodd-Frank bill will help end Wall Street's reckless practices, and includes a number of common-sense provisions that civil rights, consumer, and labor advocates have sought for years – like requiring lenders to make sure that borrowers can repay their mortgages and creating a consumer regulator to do the job that Wall Street regulators didn't do. Although Ms. Zirkin and many progressive allies were encouraged by the vote, other public comments signaled that even more work will need to be done before the Senate takes up the measure following the summer holiday recess. For some in decision-making positions, the proposed financial reform is a serious threat to free market enterprise and a deterrent to economic recovery, leaving those who championed the effort bewildered. In an effort to forge bipartisan support for the measure, the conference committee reconvened before the House vote on late Tuesday, June 27 to revisit one item at the request of Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown. Brown had publicly threatened to withdraw his personal support of the bill due to the late conference addition of a $19 billion bank fee that was added to cover costs of the reform. In two hours time, the fee was dropped and replaced by leftover funds already appro-
BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE New York Area Senior Citizens Join Digital Age Through OATS Senior citizens who are having trouble learning the Internet are finding the help they need in the Brooklyn-based Older Adults Technology Service (OATS). OATS founder, Tom Kamber, has made it his mission to close the technology gap for older adults by engaging, training, and supporting senior citizens. Through workshops designed for seniors, OATS educates the elderly on the basics of the Internet. Since 2004, OATS has successfully helped senior citizens live better lives, connect with family and friends, and even manage their money. Using a broadband connection, they are able to teach over 1,300 adults per year. In addition to providing these training courses, OATS also partners with local organizations such as Per Scholas (www.perscholas.org) to The Chicago Crusader
provide technology services to senior citizens. This particular partnership enabled seniors to receive a free computer after completing a 10-week course. Providing this equipment helps to offset the cost of broadband, which many discover is minimal compared to the benefits. Overall, OATS has been very successful in capturing the attention of the senior community. Many of the senior citizens that benefit from the program are over 70, and half are below the poverty line. By offering free computer and Internet courses, seniors are able to take a chance on a new technology without feeling like they are taking a big risk. Older adults gain the confidence they need to use the Internet, and are able to live more independently as a result.
priated to the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). In other words, instead of requiring banks to cover the cost of financial reform that their ill-advised practices created, taxpayers will be stuck with the bill. But there’s even more.
After winning his way, Sen. Brown issued a statement advising, "I appreciate the conference committee revisiting the Wall Street reform bill and removing the $19 billion bank tax," he said in a statement. "Over the July recess, I will continue to review this
important bill." Reacting to the emerging partisan comments, President Obama said during a Wednesday appearance in Racine, Wisconsin, ''You would think this would be a bipartisan issue. This is the same fi(Continued on page15)

The Island is roughly triangularshaped with its base the straight south shore. It is 9 miles wide and 2.3 miles long at its furthest points and the total land area is approximately 100 square miles.
The Obama Family As a resort area, the population changes dramatically from one season to the next and Martha’s Vineyard has a year-round population of about 20,000 swelling to 100,000 in the summer. An additional 25,000 are coming and going on ferries every day. It is made up of several distinct groups: year-round residents, seasonal residents who have second homes there. Visitors come from around the world to spend the season, a month, a week or perhaps only a day touring the small communities, exploring the vast stretches of beaches and sampling the “simple life” which lives on today. Martha’s Vineyard is a great place to visit and live because of: it’s natural beauty...stone walls, rolling countryside, fishing boats and beach sand. It’s authenticity...no chain stores, lots of shopping with local flavor and great seafood. It’s mystique....magnificent homes, chic boutiques and respect for celebrity privacy. It’s thriving culture...art galleries, music, theatre and lectures from leading authors and thinkers. Martha’s Vineyard is a shopper’s paradise and although you won’t find a mall or chain store on the Island, the Vineyard is home to exclusive shops and boutiques offering antiques, handcrafts, whimsical gifts and designer label clothing. For art collectors, the Island has more than 50 art galleries, showing the best in traditional and contemporary art. Hand-blown glass, metalwork sculpture, one-of-a-kind jewelry and just about every other medium you can think of and you’ll find work by local and nationally recognized artists represented. The Wampanoag Tribe operates shops at the Aquinnah Cliffs specializing in Native American crafts and souvenirs. You’ll find plenty of Martha’s Vineyard gear in the shops of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. Whether you’re shopping with a particular item in mind or just looking for something out-of-the-ordinary, shoppers will leave the island loaded with treasures and eager to return just like I did. If you’re interested in visiting Martha’s Vineyard, but, you are not fortunate enough to know someone who has a “place” on the Island, as I was, you can always book a room at Hanover House. The Hanover House provides a great value for guests with the charm of a country home and the convenience of a village inn. It’s located only a five minute walk from town, 10 minutes to the ferry and within a few minutes of all the necessary transportation on the Island. Each of the rooms is individually decorated, and will provide a warm and comfortable place to start and end your day and the grounds provide a secluded feeling even though the Inn is just a short walk from town. It’s located at 28 Edgartown Road, Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts and for Reservations you may call 1-800-696-8633. For assistance in planning your Martha’s Vineyard get-away you may contact the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, toll free at 1-800-5054815....and when you get there go to the Seafood Shanty (31 Dock Street) or Square Rigger (225 Upper Main Street) and have a Lobster Roll....it’s my NEW favorite food! 12

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ
The Karate Kid The Karate Kid was such a delightful film, even though I had to watch Will and Jada Smith’s son get clobbered a couple of times before he came into his own with his Kung Fu. I really liked the entire hook that Jaden Smith, or Dre in the movie, and his mom, played by Taraji P. Henson, left Detroit in a leap of faith and moved clear across the ocean to China. Taraji (Sherry Parker) worked in the auto industry, her job dried up there and she did the next logical thing—take the job that was offered to her. Now I'd like to imagine that I would have made that same decision, but maybe not just to another state in the country but certainly to an entire new continent. But the decision didn't come without trials at least for Dre. I recall hearing Jada during an interview saying that it was hard for her to watch her son play the Kung Fu neophyte (and I know the movie is called the Karate Kid, a remake of the first one that seems generations ago, now). I'm sure it was for Jada, because it was hard for me to watch. But the move to China created opportunities and dreams for the Parkers, and it’s a good thing that Dre ran into veteran martial artist-actor Jackie Chan, who plays the maintenance man, Mr. Han. Dre was constantly being bullied by his fellow classmates, particularly since he had his eyes on a cute girl who played the violin.
Jaden Smith After a while, however, he’s saved by Han, and he learns that Han knows his stuff. He asks Han to teach him Kung Fu, and while Han is resistant at first, he takes Dre on—first teaching him discipline and respect. Of course, Dre couldn’t figure out how picking up, putting on and placing his jacket on a makeshift coat rack had anything to do with martial arts. But it all soon became crystal clear, and Dre excelled in his classes and his martial arts abilities. It was beautiful watching the Chinese customs, where the elderly gathered in the street to exercise and where you could see young man after young man gathered for Kung Fu
of Dre, Dre would fight them in an upcoming open Kung Fu competition. Sherry is glad that Dre finally has found something to which he’s driven, because Dre had voiced displeasure with the entire relocation. As it turns out, Dre is more than primed for the competition, even though it wasn’t an easy endeavor. But through it all, and even moviegoers could see, he learned much while under Han’s tutelage. And I’m sure the experience of making the movie was a great learning tool for young Jaden, also. Jaden also starred in The Pursuit of Happyness with Will

Smith, and it’s true the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I say Jaden is truly his father’s and mother’s son; he has potential as an actor. The Karate Kid is in theaters now and has been doing quite well at the box office. The Chicago Crusader

ECLIPSE A Review by Bonnie DeShong It is a few weeks from high school graduation and Bella (Kristen Stewart) is pressuring her ice-cold boyfriend, Edward (Robert Pattinson) to make love to her and turn her into a Vampire. To his credit, Edward is against both ideas, at least until after they are married. If Bella doesn’t have enough to worry about with graduation, saying goodbye to her mother, father and friends (once she becomes a vampire she won’t be able to see them again), her best friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) professes his love for her. Did I mention he is a werewolf with great abs and hates all vampires especially Edward? If that isn’t enough, a red head vampire named Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) is making an army of new vampires to kill Edward’s family starting with Bella. The werewolves and vampires call a truce to fight Victoria’s army and keep Bella safe. I love Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” series and so far the movies don’t hold a candle to the written word of the novels. To the film’s credit, the scenery is beautiful, the fight scenes are somewhat in-

I did enjoy the flashbacks to the time before Rosalie (Nikki Reed) and Jasper (Jackson Rathbone)

Robert Pattinson as Edward at all. I thought they were wooden and without dimension. They seemed to have found their beat and give much more to their characters in this film. If you haven’t read the books,

“Thriller: The Musical Life of Michael Jackson” by Nelson George c.2010, DaCapo $24.00 / $30.50 Canada 241 pages, includes index You’ve seen the video at least two dozen times, maybe more. You’d watch it again right now if you could. You can’t stop til you get enough. Seeing 1,500 orange-jumpsuitclad inmates doing a perfectlychoreographed Zombie Dance brings back such happy memories. It makes you want to watch the original video, complete with the undead doing dancesteps you once copied. You can probably still do those steps. You need to find those LPs you’ve got stored in the basement. You need to hear that tune again. In the new book “Thriller: The Musical Life of Michael Jackson” by Nelson George, you’ll learn about that song and the album that smashed (and still holds) world records nearly thirty years after its release. Nelson George says he grew up with the Jackson 5 “in [his] DNA.” As a music critic and journalist, he considered Michael Jackson as one of his “primary subjects”; Jackson was the focus of The Chicago Crusader
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
his first book. George spoke to Michael once, awkwardly. For awhile, he was a much called-upon Michael Jackson authority. But there might not have been a Michael Jackson, King of Pop, had it not been for Joe Jackson, says George. He argues that it was Joe who urged his children to find their musical talent. Joe set up gigs, and drove his boys to concert houses and to success. Joe Jackson “instilled in Michael the work ethic noticed by everyone…” In this book, George looks at Michael Jackson’s life and the impact of Thriller, particularly in the lives of African Americans. The album, he points out, was released before Oprah made her AM Chicago debut. It broke records before Whoopi Goldberg was a star. It was a megaseller before Michael Jordan was chosen by the Chicago Bulls. It debuted before The Cosby Show. It deliberately “blurred” racial lines. “In the continuing dialogue over what Michael means and what his legacy is, as both artist and man, Thriller should be the central point of reference.” Saturday, July 10, 2010
Remember when your father yelled at you to “TURN THAT MUSIC DOWN”? You didn’t, and you shouldn’t turn this book down, either. But there are a few things you should know… As a consummate music critic, author Nelson George does a fine job dissecting Michael Jackson’s music and his life. I didn’t mind George’s personal stories woven in between his narrative of Michael’s life and career; in fact, I enjoyed them. I was fascinated by the cultural touchpoints that put Michael’s career into perspective, given the times. But “Thriller: The Musical Life of Michael Jackson” is scattershot: George sometimes bounces from point to point, which can be hard to follow. Some stories seemed to be hastily inserted, as if he didn’t want to forget to tell them; others begged to be expounded-upon, but weren’t. Astute fans will also notice at least one factual error in this book. Still, if you grew up with MJ’s music in your ears, you shouldn’t even try to resist this pop-culture-based memoir-filled critique. For you, “Thriller” is going to make you “he he hee.” 13
WORLD OF MUSIC By Dr. Barbara Wright-Pryor Brazeal Wayne Dennard dead at 81 Founder of ‘Classical Roots’ concerts with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Brazeal Wayne Dennard, musician, composer, choral conductor and past president of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. (NANM) died Monday, July 5 in his Detroit (MI) home of a heart ailment. He was 81. Mr. Dennard, felt by many to be the choral music laureate of the City of Detroit, was born January 1, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, the fifth and youngest child of Bertha and Ezekiel Dennard. His love for the City of Detroit was steadfast and he resided there for his entire life. Brazeal Wayne Dennard was educated in the Detroit Public Schools and attended Eastern High School and later, Wayne State University where he received undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music Education. His real musical education, he stressed, began in church. “I grew up hearing church choirs sing anthems and spirituals. Socially the church was the only place Black people could perform. They weren’t allowed in the great concert halls of the country.” Mr. Dennard attended Highland Park Junior College from1954-56 after serving in the military during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953 prior to enrolling at Wayne State University. As a youth, Mr. Dennard’s musical talents became readily apparent. Having been influenced by his
Brazeal Wayne Dennard 1929=2010 mother, a fine musician and singer, along with her musical friends, he began studying piano at a young age and for several years studied under the tutelage of Dean Robert L. Nolan, one of Detroit’s foremost music pedagogues. Mr. Nolan was a taskmaster who demanded and expected the very best from his students. At the Robert Nolan School of Music, Mr. Dennard not only studied piano but also began studying voice. He became an excellent tenor and sang solo as well as choral parts of major choral works in the Robert Nolan Choir. He later was in demand as a tenor soloist with many other choral ensembles and orchestras. It was as a young student of Dean Nolan that he first had the opportunity to continuously hear and perform great choral works and spirituals, music that would continue to be most important to him for the remainder of his life. The choral masterworks that he prepared and direct-
ed with the Angelic Choir of the People’s Baptist Church were an outgrowth of these youthful experiences and his performances with this fine choir were a gift to Detroit’s musicians and listeners, especially those of the Black community. Music of Handel, Mozart, Brahms, SaintSaëns, Nuñes-Garcia, Dubois, Dett and many other great composers could be heard on various Sunday afternoons, often with orchestra, at the People’s Baptist Church. Although Mr. Dennard was an excellent music teacher, chorus master and conductor, the formation of the famed Brazeal Dennard Chorale in 1972 may have been the crowning jewel of his professional life. This excellent musical organization was established to feature and promote the music of Black composers and to perpetuate the heritage of the Negro Spiritual, a mission identical to that of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. (NANM) for which

Mr. Dennard served with distinction as president from 1975-1979. The Brazeal Dennard Chorale gained national prominence both through its performances throughout the country as well as its numerous recordings. Mr. Dennard’s many publications of spiritual arrangements as well as his numerous workshops and guest conducting appearances that dealt with the spiritual attest to the love he felt for this important musical genre. In recent years the Brazeal Dennard Chorale has also premiered the choral works of contemporary Black composers, and Dennard established a community chorus as well as a youth group. “I am two generations removed from slavery,” Dennard once told Detroit Free Press writer Cassandra Spratling during an interview. “I grew up listening to the music that expressed our hopes and soothed our sorrows. It became a part of me. So in a sense the chorale is the link to our past and the youth chorale was established to make sure this work continues.” Significantly, it was also as a part of the Chorale’s mission that Mr. Dennard played an important role with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in establishing its annual Classical Roots Concert. In these concerts, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Brazeal Dennard Chorale featured choral and orchestral works of African American composers in the

classical tradition. Many of these concerts involved premiere performances. The countless awards, citations, and honors he received over many years are too numerous to be listed here. However, mention must be made of his having been the recipient of the Detroit Urban League’s Distinguished Warrior Award in 2008, as well as honorary doctorate degrees from Olivet and Marygrove Colleges which honored his contributions to choral music, education, and service to the musical community. Mr. Dennard was preceded in death in 1988 by his devoted wife of 31 years, Murdice Leola (Vallery) Dennard. Survivors include six nieces; three nephews; one sister-inlaw; one brother-in-law; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Mr. Dennard lay in state Thursday from 4:00 pm -8:00 pm and final services were held on Friday, July 9 at the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit. (Contributing: Robert A. SENIOR LIVING
Looking good at 100! Pioneer Gardens is the home to some of Chicago’s finest citizens and on June 25th one such citizen was celebrated in honor of her 100th birthday. Amid celebratory desserts, leis, party tiaras and jubilant attendees was Ms. Willie Mae Cook the birthday Queen for the day. Willie Mae Cook, who, like so many others who have lived a long life in the confines of the Windy City, hales from parts south. The grand lady relocated to Chicago in 1929 from Elmore County, Alabama at the tender age of 19. According to her family Ms. Willie Mae she lived an idyllic life as a wife and mother. Family members talked about how they treasure her as their great oral historian with instant recall of the family’s history dating back to the late 1880s. Ms. Willie Mae enjoyed memberships with Chicago’s Metropolitan Community Church and Pilgrim Baptist Church. She noted that she derives pleasure from her longstanding membership and fellowship with Beth Eden Church Floral Club of Morgan Park for more than 70 years. While a member with the club Ms. Willie Mae bantered about with pride and devotion until she began residency at Pioneer Gardens Affordable Supportive Living, “A Miracle on 38th at King Drive” in 2006. Ask the question as to what she attributes to such comfortable life Ms. Willie Mae admonishes that she fearlessly lives each day
