Advertising tax bad for Black community For three quarters of a century, The Chicago Crusader has been a viable source of information to the Black community. It has also been among scores of small Black businesses in Illinois that have weathered difficult times including the recent economic recession. But Governor Bruce Rauner and a growing number of bipartisan lawmakers want to impose a 6.25 percent tax on advertisements in newspapers, television, radio and the internet. If it passes, Illinois will be the only state in the country to impose such a tax. The Chicago Crusader joins numerous small newspapers and businesses in opposing this proposed sales tax because of its devastating effect on businesses, employees and most important, the Black community. Rauner wants the revenue to plug the state’s $4 billion deficit. He’s willing to create his own headlines even if it means hurting a business that reports news that he doesn’t want anyone to read. Media outlets in Illinois and across the nation are still suffering from an advertising industry that has been declining since 2000. Even large, prominent news organizations such as The Chicago Tribune and The New York Times have suffered mass layoffs after losing millions of dollars in advertising year after year. But the proposed tax would do further damage to these important institutions. However in the Black community, the effects will be far worse. Advertising is a big source of revenue for any media, but for the Black Press, advertising has historically been difficult to obtain. With the little advertising revenue available to the Black Press and other small media businesses, Rauner’s proposal would drive away our most loyal advertisers who have helped keep our enterprises running for decades. Petition demands progress at Pilgrim Baptist Church By J. Coyden Palmer The continuing saga over the fate of the historic Pilgrim Baptist Church could be headed to a point of critical mass. The remaining structure in Bronzeville has become an eyesore and hundreds of people in the community want the building either razed or rebuilt. Committee members from the GAP Community organization met with Alderman Pat Dowell (3rd) last week and presented her with a petition signed by over 400 area residents seeking a resolution to the matter. In the petition, the residents are asking the Pilgrim leadership to address the safety concerns they have with the ravaged building. Concerns come as the historic church plans to hold a musical extravaganza at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 12 to honor the late Thomas A. Dorsey, who is considered the “Father of Gospel Music.”

Pilgrim Baptist Church, 3000 S. Indiana Ave., was burned to the ground after a fire ripped through the building in January 2006. In the last ten years, efforts to restore the church have dragged on as neighborhood residents grow impatient. Concerned homeowners have expressed the church is having a negative impact on property values in the area. They also complain that the landscaping is not being maintained and there are also safety concerns and quality of life issues. Residents are also complaining that the braces used to hold up the remaining walls are blocking the sidewalk on the east side of Indiana Avenue. GAP would like to see the braces moved to the inside of the structure to free up the sidewalk. The organization is also calling on Pilgrim leaders to put a roof on the remaining structure.

GAP believes there has been no tangible rebuilding movement by Pilgrim. GAP President Leonard McGee said it is important for the community to understand that GAP is not demanding anything, but seeking a resolution to a long-standing problem. “We don’t want to dictate to them what to do,” said McGee. “All we want are our sidewalks back, the building boarded up, the buttresses put on the inside and a roof on top.” A certified letter is being sent to the leadership of Pilgrim by Dowell with the purpose of meeting to find out what are the short- and long-term plans with the church. Community residents would like to see (Continued on page 3)

Burns meets with residents over permit parking asked several questions. The big concern is whether residents would get a refund on city stickers that they purchased. Residents also wanted to know why was there a rush to make the change and will street parking in the area be considered again. Burns said he believes special permit parking, especially in neighborhoods is not fair to taxpayers. He said the idea started on the North Side years ago and has spread throughout the city. He said special permit parking only isolates communities and causes more problems in neighborhoods. “The thing I see that happens after a block gets special permit parking is people on the neighboring block see an influx of cars looking for parking spaces and it also creates a ‘why are they so special attitude?’ We want to make communities welcoming places for people to come and visit their family and the local businesses,” Burns explained. “The public streets are for all of us that pay taxes. Back when Toni Preckwinkle was alderman and all of those

By J. Coyden Palmer Alderman Will Burns (4th Ward) told a group of South Side residents Monday night he is not in favor of permit parking anywhere within the ward. Burns appeared as a special guest at the GAP Community meeting in Bronzeville to explain why he rescinded permit parking along 35th Street and Giles. Thanks to

“He [Fioretti] knew the wards were changing and he should have tabled this situation so the new alderman could take a look at it.” — Alderman Will Burns former Alderman Bob Fioretti (2nd Ward), the permit was approved and residents were allowed to park on the street. But that changed after Burns became alderman and Chicago’s ward boundaries were redrawn. A handful of concerned Bronzeville residents came out to voice their frustration over the change. Burns empathized with them and

Alderman Will Burns who followed her in the fourth ward, there has not been special permit parking issued since 1991.” Burns was not upset with the residents who were complaining about his decision. Instead he blames Fioretti for making the decision as a lame duck alderman and not giving him the courtesy of telling him what he had done before he left office in May. “He [Fioretti] knew the wards

were changing and he should have tabled this situation so the new alderman could take a look at it,” Burns said. “To approve a 24-hour permit parking only for a small block seems over the top to me.” Burns also said he heard from other residents on the block in question who did not want the permit parking. He said some of those residents chose to remain anonymous. Residents in favor of permit parking said they need it because Bronzeville Military Academy is across the street from their homes and people doing business at the school take up a lot of parking spaces because the school has a small lot. Residents are also worried about people parking on their street during White Sox games. In addition, residents fear regular everyday business people working near the busy stretch of 35th street are taking the parking spots. They also complained about the city’s online application process. Burns said there are a few areas in the ward that do have permit

parking and have had them for years. He explained those places are new to the 4th Ward boundaries though and he has no plans at this time to rescind their permits. “I don’t think permit parking is very neighborly and it makes us seem like snobs,” said one resident who lives on the block in question but did not want their name printed. “Bronzeville is getting the reputation of uppity folk and I don’t like that. I think when you do things like put speed bumps on your block, make it a cul-desac or have permit parking it gives you this air of exclusiveness that only angers others who live around you.” Burns did agree to meet with all of the residents of Giles in the coming weeks and to revisit their applications. He said for now the order to rescind will stand but the issue will be revisited in late summer or early fall. “I’m sorry you all were put in this position where you are caught in the middle,” Burns said. “But this is something I need to look at further.”

Mixed-use housing development opens in Bronzeville Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julian Castro and Acting Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) CEO Eugene Jones, Jr. on Wednesday, July 8 opened the second completed phase of Park Boulevard, which now totals 475 mixed income housing units. This development is part of the continuing revitalization of the Bronzeville commu-

nity at the former Stateway Gardens public housing site. The project represents the latest milestone in Emanuel’s efforts to promote the development of affordable housing near critical resources including transit, retail, and job opportunities. This portion of the second phase has 108 total mixed-income units of which 37 are market rate, 34 affordable and 37 public housing units,

bringing the total to 475 units at Park Boulevard. “Park Boulevard is another new chapter in the economic comeback story being written here in Bronzeville by the residents and community partners of Bronzeville,” said Emanuel. “With this ribbon cutting, we are opening the front doors of homes for hardworking Chicago families, but also opening up new opportunities and

Restore it now or tear it down the church show proof they have a general contractor, updated architectural plans and a timetable to do the work. Most would like to see the church remain as a historical landmark, but they also believe the time has come for action to take place. “No one is advocating tearing Pilgrim down, but the church burned down. We’re saying it is a hazard, and we have a concern with that. It’s been ten years,” said GAP member Gaylon McGee. “I think we’re at the point right now that in the coming two weeks, we will have some definitive action in terms of what is going to happen with Pilgrim.” On June 27, the Crusader learned that the church leadership held a meeting with its members at the Chicago Inn Lake Shore Drive. Several sources told the Crusader the subject of the meeting was the future of the

(Continued from page 1) church. Trustee Cynthia Jones, who ran the meeting, has stopped speaking with the Crusader after the publication ran a series of articles highlighting the controversy and questioning what has happened to millions of dollars in donations that have poured in since 2006. Jones has refused to publicly answer any questions about financing or how much money was raised and how much is still in Pilgrim’s coffers. GAP member Danny Bishop believes the time to treat Pilgrim with “kid gloves” has come and gone. He said the church has not been upfront and truthful with the community. “We’re kicking the can down the road. We don’t want to hurt their feelings or say certain things. But, I think the time has come for us to suggest to Pilgrim that you either repair or remove that structure because it is a danger,” Bish-

op said. “By being selective in our verbiage, it has not promoted good will on their part. Pilgrim has no intention of doing anything…our job is to put pressure on them.” Isaac Whitman, a member of Pilgrim who has filed several lawsuits against the church seeking information about the current finances, also spoke at the GAP meeting. He agreed with Bishop that the community must ask Pilgrim leadership hard questions and demand action on the matter. “My thoughts are that the meeting was called just to appease some members and give them false hope that they are doing something. They are not doing anything, and I’m going to shoot off a letter to the IRS because I believe the church leaders have been embezzling funds.”

new possibilities for the neighborhood.” That development has spurred a community renaissance along with the arrival of retail businesses such as Jimmy Johns and Starbucks. Also, the presence of a wide range of transportation options such as Metra, CTA and a transportation orientated development that benefits three different commuter train stops along 35th St. “The point of Plan Forward is to move beyond the bricks and mortar and concentrate on neighborhoods – as well as developments,” Acting CEO Jones said. “Park Boulevard embodies that philosophy of ‘strong, vibrant’ communities.” Stateway Gardens originally consisted of eight highrise buildings. All were demolished, ushering in a new era for the neighborhood with the construction of Park Boulevard and revitalization of the community on both sides of State Street. “Park Boulevard represents more than just new homes — it’s also a source of new hope and new promise for the Bronzeville community. With passion and purpose, Chicago’s leaders are doing incredible work to enhance neighborhoods and help residents build better lives for themselves and their children. HUD looks forward to continuing to support all the visionary efforts occurring in this great city to ensure that opportunity is within reach of every community today, tomor-

row, and for generations to come.” said Castro. Park Boulevard and other CHA redevelopment sites are part of Emanuel’s five year housing plan, which will invest $1.3 billion in spending to create, improve, and preserve more than 41,000 units of housing by 2019. Since 2012, City of Chicago affordable housing initiatives have provided approximately $1.1 billion in public funds toward the creation and rehabilitation of more than 27,000 units of affordable housing. “This new phase of development at Park Boulevard will complement Bronzeville’s vibrant community,” said Alderman Pat Dowell (3rd Ward). “I anticipate additional modern, market-rate and affordable housing options and retail opportunities to come to the 3rd Ward as a result of this development.” Through the Five Year Housing Plan, Emanuel has committed to promoting fair housing initiatives. In addition to creating vibrant communities at the redeveloped sites, CHA has a commitment to families wishing to move to Opportunity Areas, neighborhoods where the poverty rate is less than 20 percent and there is less than 5 percent of subsidized housing, both within the City of Chicago, as well as with other public housing agencies regionally. EDITORIAL THE SCIENCE OF FORGIVENESS Lately, in the wake of egregious attacks on the Black community, a number of Black people have come under verbal attack or scorn because they have publicly talked about forgiving those who have wronged them. Let it be said at the outset that it is understandable that people would want revenge as a result of abuse. This is generally the way the world works. “Forgivers” have been called brainwashed, or afraid of white supremacy, and more. They have become vilified almost as much as those who perpetrated the abuse on them, however, it must be said that forgiveness does not mean inaction or that we should not seek justice. Actually, if you think about it, the more emotion that surrounds a situation, the less logical people will be. For example, the latest outrage was generated by the attack on the Charleston 9 by an avowed white supremacist. Some Blacks have come under fire because they have not demonstrated enough anger, especially during the funeral services for Rev. Clementa Pinckney, one of the victims. Let’s look at this situation in another way; African Americans are killing each other in some cities to such an extent that it is becoming a crisis. Very seldom do you hear an outcry about this; people are reluctant to snitch, and in essence, Black oppressors of beleaguered Black communities often go free to commit mayhem without consequences. The emotion that surrounds Black-on-Black murder does not appear to be as intense as when there is white-on-Black abuse. Most likely, this has something to do with the power dynamic between Blacks and whites. White supremacy appears to be a given by Blacks, which is why some people say “that white people’s ice is colder than Black people’s ice,” etc. When emotions enter the equation, all reason, as pointed out before, goes out of the proverbial window. This is probably why Blacks in Ferguson who rioted were castigated, and then Blacks who did not riot as expected, like those in Charleston, NC, were also castigated. It just doesn’t make sense; when white people are involved, you’re darned if you do and darned if you don’t. Actually, there is a quasi-scientific reason for opting on the side of forgiveness of our enemies. If we look around the world, violent retaliation does not do anything but generate more violence. Nothing is ever permanently solved by it. We should not take our cues from white people who are oppressive; they are not viable role models. We do ourselves a distinct disservice when opting to imitate their behavior. White supremacist organizations are not beneficial to anyone, not even themselves. If we look at the notion of non-nonviolent models of protest, however, a number of successful outcomes have historically been demonstrated. Dr. Martin Luther King was able to mobilize a whole nation of reasonable people and ultimately the community experienced positive changes. The Black community gained allies as a result. No longer are people forced to drink out of separate water fountains, and discrimination is technically outlawed. Mahatma Gandhi also caused great changes when he applied the strategy of non-violence against the British in South Africa. Now, some people will point to the seeming temporary nature of these victories; but what permanent victories have we seen with violent aggression? What we see is continual warfare; violence begetting violence. New research is revealing an unexpected benefit that comes with forgiveness - it is becoming more apparent that it has more benefits for the victim than for those in need of forgiveness. It has healing properties. People who carry a lot of hatred around in them are the ones who eventually become ill. This may seem illogical, but it has been proven true that releasing the burden of hatred has therapeutic properties. Finally, we must reach an understanding that oppressors of any ilk, Black, white, or other, are sick. They are human generators of societal disease. What forgiveness does is send healing balm out into the world, which can ultimately end in EVOLUTION, and not revolution. We can change the world with love. The catch is, however, that we have to become evolved enough to see this. A luta continua.

We just saw a true case of media bias at the fundamental level last week with coverage of The Chosen Few event in Jackson Park. Like as in most, if not all of the previous 24 years, the world’s largest house music party, went off without any major incidents. Any problem situations were quickly diffused by some of the house heads present, not the cops. We know there were thousands of people in the park at the same time for the same reason. We were enjoying ourselves and that special brand of music like we do every year. We were there to reconnect with some friends we only seem to see on the 4th of July weekend. It doesn’t get better than music, food and friends, does it? I don’t know why the event didn’t result in positive major coverage in both of the mainstream papers. At best it was covered as an afterthought. That speaks to the need to have more Black reporters at those papers, as well as it seems to be an inherent bias against Black folks doing the right thing and staying out of trouble, even when we gather in the thousands. Personally, it shows a real bias against Black people in and around Chicago. Had 12 Black people got into a fistfight in Jackson Park, believe me it would

It was super insensitive and just wrong for McCarthy to blame the boy’s father for that death. The father was the intended victim, but the son was struck with the bullet. COMMENTARY

Donald Trump is the DNC’s Worse Nightmare Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford It is no coincidence that two of the top three Republican candidates right now are non-politicians. The American people are becoming frustrated in the typical career politician. Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson are blazing a trail in most states and they haven’t even gotten into full gear. The Democratic National Committee isn’t that worried about Dr. Carson. They believe they have the Black vote wrapped up no matter who they put in front of us. What is scary to them is the fact that Donald Trump keeps rising in the polls no matter what he says or who he offends. The Donald is telling it like it is and keeping it real. He has his own money and is not beholden to anyone. When he says something insulting the push back doesn’t even phase him. He double downs on his point and most of the time he is convincing. Personally, I like him as a leader and someone who depends on his own skills and holds himself accountable. That is no typical politician looking for blame and excuses all the way to the polls.

Harry C. Alford The DNC can’t figure him out and they are trying in earnest to throw some kind of scandal on him. They think they can turn the Hispanic vote against him. Oh yes, they are all calling him a racist for saying our Mexican border is immoral and filled with rapists. They say how could he speak against Hispanics in this matter? Yet, he does not lie. According

to the very democratic leaning Huffington Post: “As the number of Central American women and girls crossing into the U.S. continues to spike, so is the staggering amount of sexual violence waged against these migrants who are in search of a better life. According to a stunning Fusion investigation, 80 percent of women and girls crossing into the U.S. by way of Mexico are raped during their journey. That’s up from a previous estimate of 60 percent according to an Amnesty International report.” “This year alone, immigration authorities expect more than 70,000 unaccompanied minors to come through the United States unlawfully, the majority of whom are from Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. The number of unaccompanied Central American girls caught at the Southwest border has rapidly outpaced the number of boys, according to a July Pew Research study.” “Through May, the number of unaccompanied girls younger than 18 caught at the US-Mexico border increased by 77 percent… Rape can be perpetrated by anyone along the way, including

guides, fellow migrants, bandits or government officials, according to Fusion…The assaults are so common that many women and girls take contraceptives beforehand as preventative measures.” The above is quite credible and the proof is real. However, the DNC is acting like Mr. Trump is a bold face racist liar. One of the “pit bull media outlets” being set upon him is Univision the Hispanic television station. Univision has dropped the annual Ms. USA Pageant, which is owned by Trump in protest to his statements on the rape that is going on south of our border. The funny thing, it is Univision that owns the Fusion outlet that broke the story and has documented it. This is all about the Hispanic vote. I believe it is going to backfire on the DNC. No one approves of rape and sexual abuse. They are trying to ignore it as if it will go away. Trump is exposing it and making it the big issue it should be. Another pit bull for the DNC is Macy’s department stores. They have pulled their Trump shirt and tie collection. Mr. Trump laughs saying it made him little money and besides the product was be-

ing made in China with cheap labor and that was bothering him. They are trying to “kill” Donald Trump but instead he is getting stronger. He is the only person in the vast field of candidates who makes and accounts for his own money. The others sit around and become wealthy through their inheritance, cronyism, and conniving ways. Hillary Clinton is the best example of this. The “Shady Lady” has built over a billion dollar nest egg selling us out and skirting around the rules. Donald Trump’s wealth is straight up. He knows how to make an honest dollar and create jobs. That is what the nation is looking for and the reason he is getting stronger the more they mention his name. In Donald Trump we have a successful business person who can survive all the scrutiny and that is so puzzling to the DNC. I don’t know how this election is going to end but don’t count Trump out until he is indeed out. That may not happen. Confederate Traitors Don’t Deserve to be Honored By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Can you imagine waving a flag that honors Benedict Arnold, a name synonymous with treason? How about traveling to work and back on Aldrich Ames Boulevard, a tribute to the CIA mole who secretly worked for the Russians? Should we erect a statute of Robert Hanssen, the FBI computer and wiretapping expert who spent most of his career spying for the Soviet Union and Russia, in the hallway of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.? Do you favor naming public schools attended mostly by Jews after Fritz Kuhn to honor the German who lived in the U.S. and was in charge of the famous U.S. Nazi group, the German-American Bund? If you are repulsed by the thought of honoring those traitors, you should be equally indignant at the thought of erecting statues and naming streets and schools after Confederate traitors. Make no mistake about it: Those who declared war on the Union were traitors, defined as “a person who is not loyal to his or her own country, friends, etc.” Eleven Southern states broke from the Union for the same reason. www.chicagocrusader.co

George E. Curry Writing in his book, “The Creation of Confederate Nationalism: Ideology and Identity in the Civil War South,” Drew Gilpin Faust observed, “leaders of the secession movement across the South cited slavery as the most compelling reason for southern independence.” Alexander Stephens, in what became known as the Cornerstone Speech, said on March 21, 1861 in Savannah, Ga., “The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution – African slavery as it exists amongst us – the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the

immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution.” He explained, “[The Confederate] its corner-stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery – subordination to the superior race – is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.” These historical facts notwithstanding, a majority of Americans – 57 percent – view the Confederate flag as a symbol of Southern pride rather than racism, according to a recent CNN poll. It gets more interesting when the numbers are broken down by race. Of whites polled, only 25 percent view the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism. However, 72 percent of Blacks associate the flag with racism. It is time to bring down the Confederate flag of hate, but we should not stop there. We should remove the monuments and tributes to the Civil War traitors from public buildings and streets. If Robert J. Bentley, the Republican governor of Alabama, can voluntarily remove four Confederate flags from the Capitol grounds in Montgomery and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

can recommend that a statue of Kentucky-born Jefferson Davis be removed from the state Capitol, it is time to remove the tributes to Confederate leaders from the U.S. Capitol. Visitors to the Capitol are greeted by towering statues of 11 former Confederate leaders, including Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Vice President Alexander H. Stephens and Gen. Robert E. Lee. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a civil rights icon, said it’s time for the statues to be removed. He told the Associated Press, “Young children, school children, walk by these statues, and those of us who serve in the Congress, we have to get our own house in order… We have to have a cleansing in this place.” There is still cleansing to be done at the state level. Despite the removal of the Confederate flags from the Capitol grounds in Alabama, for example, the state annually celebrates Confederate Memorial Day, Jefferson Davis’ birthday, and honors Robert E. Lee on the same day it observes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. A large statue of Jefferson Davis on the Capitol grounds overlooks Dexter Avenue, where Dr. King pastored his first church. The Confederate Monument is still on the

grounds and a star still marks the spot where Jefferson Davis took the oath as president of the Confederate states. Mississippi also combines the birthdays of Dr. King and Robert E. Lee, observes Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of April and combines national observance of Memorial Day with Jefferson Davis’ birthday as a state holiday. In addition to Alabama and Mississippi, Confederate Memorial Day is also observed as a state holiday in Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Let the cleansing begin. Like Maj. General William T. Sherman, let’s march through Dixie and the rest of the nation until we rid the United States of tributes to traitors. George E. COMMENTARY

EXAMINING THE AMERICAN DYNAMIC AND NATIONALISM Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Web site: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago

Dr. Conrad Worrill In order for the African Community in America to continue our fight for self-determination and dignity, it is important that

we remind ourselves of the nature of the American dynamic. Essentially, and at the foundation of the American-European dynamic, is the fact that it is made up of many nations who migrated to this country and continued to fight for and develop their national interests, inside this country. At the same time they maintained their economic, political, cultural, linguistic, and social relationships with their country of origin. We can witness this phenomenon on a daily basis by just taking a quick glance at the national/ethnic group practices and beliefs of the Jews, Poles, Irish, Italians, Germans, Swedes, Greeks, French, Slovakians, Czechs, etc., and how they have consolidated their political and economic power in America. They have all done this through their nationalistic unity on the fundamental life giving and life sustaining issues that affect their interests. In other words, they have maintained a strong sense of where they came from, who they are, and where they are going. This formula has been at the heart of their historical efforts to acquire power in America. We can observe this same trend among the Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, Viet-

namese, Lebanese, Jordanians, and Palestinians who are the new national/ethnic groups of America. In fact, the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and other Spanish-speaking national/ethnic groups are following this same pattern. They are fighting for nationalism in America, without calling it that. When African people in America talk about nationalism, we are often charged with being racists or anti-white. However, the historical record demonstrates clearly that nationalism has been the primary method by which every national/ethnic group has achieved and maintains power. Harold Cruse describes this dilemma of the African Community in America, in his most profound analysis of our movement, in his book “The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual.” Cruse framed the American dynamic in this manner when he said, “On the face of it, this dilemma rests on the fact that America, which idealizes the rights of the individual above everything else, in reality, a nation dominated by the social powers of groups, classes, ingroups and cliques both ethnic and religious.”

He goes further to explain, “The individual in America has few rights that are not backed up by the political, economic and social power of one group or another.” Therefore, Cruse states, “… the individual [Black person] has, proportionately, very few rights indeed because his ethnic group (whether or not he actually identifies with it) has very little political, economic or social power (beyond moral grounds) to wield.” In our efforts to acquire Black Power, we should remind ourselves that the Black Nationalist Tradition has always been opposed to integration, assimilation, and accommodation as a solution to the problems of people of African ancestry in America. In this regard, the Black Nationalist Tradition has rejected the strategies and tactics of appealing to the morality of white people and their white supremacy system. Black Nationalists have been historically clear that people in power do not teach powerless people how to get power. And they certainly do not give power away, even though, when challenged, they may make some concessions.

It is so clear that every national/ethnic group understands their political, economic, and cultural interest. It is so natural for them to function in a nationalistic manner in their struggle to acquire and maintain power. The African Community in America has not fully conceptualized and reached a consensus on our nationalistic agenda. Many of us function as if we are scared of really acting out what we really know, for fear of being called racist. We need to stop denying our own reality. Being called racist because we believe in, and will fight for, the interests of our race with undying loyalty should become the most honorable badge of courage in our community. We should get off of this defensive “trip” when we fight for the interests of our race and some other national/ethnic group calls us racist. We should know by now, this is a tactic to sway us away from the path of acquiring power. Let’s continue our movement “to assert our own identity, define our own purpose, to make and enforce decisions and to move into our own national interest.” It is called nationalism!

CHURCH FIRES REALLY FIRE ME UP By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist It’s possible lightning may have caused one of the fires. Another may be the result of faulty electricity. Still, in the past couple of weeks, there were fires at churches in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ohio and Tennessee. At least two have been ruled arson by local fire departments. Several are still being investigated. Is it a coincidence that churches are burning in the days since the massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina? President Obama spoke to the historical importance of Black churches when he eulogized Rev. Clementa Pinckney. The church, he said, “is and always has been the center of African American life.” He went on to describe Black churches as “hush harbors” for enslaved people, “praise houses where their free descendants could gather and shout hallelujah, rest stops for the weary along the Underground Railroad, bunkers for the foot soldiers of the Civil Rights movement.” To set fire to a Black church, to kill people in a Black 6

SATURDAY, July 11, 2015

church, to bomb a church strikes at the very heart of our community. These acts of terrorism are meant to intimidate, to send a message. That these recent fires have happened in the wake of protests against the vile Confederate flag, suggests that these fires may be pushback from the protests, a continuation of work of the man who murdered nine people in Emanuel AME church. Whoever is burning churches, though, forgets that it is not 1815, but 2015. The intimidation tactics that worked during slavery won’t work now. These church burnings fire me up. They ought to fire us all up. The burnings ought to spark a resistance to racism unlike any we have seen in the past. These church fires ought to infuse us with the passion of Bree Newsome, the African American woman who climbed up a pole and snatched the Confederate flag from a pole outside the South Carolina statehouse. She didn’t wait for Governor Nikki Haley to take the Confederate flag down; she was too fired up to wait. After all, Haley’s post-massacre announcement that the flag will no longer fly on statehouse grounds is symbolic until the South Carolina

Dr. Julianne Malveaux legislature votes to take the flag down. Meanwhile, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, not needing legislative approval, ordered four Confederate flags to be taken down from the state’s capitol grounds. A South Carolina woman, Edith S. Childs, came up with a slogan when candidate Obama visited Greenwood, South Carolina (population of about 23,000) for an event that drew a scant 20 people.

To energize the small crowd, Childs walked through the crowd attempting to fire them up. The call and response phrase, “fired up, ready to go” not only galvanized the small gathering, but became a central chant of Obama’s 2008 campaign. Used everywhere from civil rights gatherings to country clubs, “fired up” captured the energy of the first Obama campaign. Indeed, organizations used the “fired up” slogan to get people out to vote, to work on issues other than the Obama campaign, to symbolize the energy needed for change. In the wake of these church burnings, the righteous need to be fired up and ready to go in dismantling the racism that has plagued our nation since its founding. We need to collectively debunk the myth that the Confederate flag is about history and heritage – it is simply about white supremacy. We need to go to school boards, especially in the South, to demand curriculum revisions when young people are forcefed inaccurate history about the Civil War. We need to put those employers “on blast” when they can’t “find” any African Americans to hire. We ought to encourage the

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) to ensure that those who get federal contracts comply with the law— that those who get federal contracts do affirmative action hiring. The Mother Emanuel massacre demonstrates that racism is alive and well in these United States. We experience it everywhere we turn, from our national statues (fewer than 10 Black women are commemorated in public statues) to persistent housing segregation. Too many of us have accepted this racism, or feel powerless to fight it. Thus, it persists. It was gratifying to see the multiracial crowds that mobilized in solidarity with the Mother Emanuel Nine. It would be interesting to see how many of those mobilized are willing to be involved in antiracist work. All of us need to be “fired up, ready to go” to persistently and consistently dismantle the racism that is woven into the very fabric of our national consciousness. President Obama, are you in? WHAT A FOURTH OF JULY Chicago has been known to be a world class city and has set many records, but Ima betcha Mayor Emanuel could have done without the record shootings and killings that took place over the 4th of July holiday. Da Mare was all choked up when he spoke about the 7-year-old and the high school student whose lives were snuffed out by some idiot trying to shoot someone else. But what was horrible was the finger pointing that Superintendent Garry McCarthy engaged in by saying some very unbecoming things about the 7-year-old victim’s father. What evidence did the Super have to make the allegations that shocked many Chicago citizens? But more than that, why

IT AIN’T OVER YET!!! Just when Ima and Bill Cosby thought the scandal was about to die down... up pops another piece in the puzzle. Jill Scott jumped off of the Cos’s bandwagon after it was revealed that Bill admitted to buying Quaaludes to sedate women he wanted to have sex with. There’s a few more, I think maybe Whoopie and Raven Simone are trying to hang in there, but it don’t look good. He’s being eliminated from boards, statutes are being removed from educational institutions and such. Oh well, there goes the positive portrayal of a Black man and a Black

rock has Rev. Corey Brooks crawled, and now that the N’Digo Scholarship event is over, where bees the Raunerites. Perhaps on vacation at an island resort? Maybe having a make-over with the money they got from the Gubner’s campaign or in the case of Rev. Brooks, maybe he’s still counting the money out for the paving and flower boxes and mysterious little white houses that now has been done on the lot where the motel once stood. Now all of the money it took to put asphalt down will be for naught when they get ready to dig a foundation for the state-ofthe-art youth center that he bees raising money for right?? They say the Rev. was last seen lying out at a resort in the Dominican Republic. Say it ain’t so Rev., where were you when all of the shootings took place over the 4th of July holiday? By the way, have

their money been put on hold from the state during the budget crisis? Just wondering… mmmmm -ImaFAME DON’T LOVE US ALL!!! Ima was glad to hear that Attorney Warren Ballentine won’t have to spend no time behind bars for his participation in a mortgage scheme. But let’s face it he was small potatoes in comparison to the executives that robbed us all blind masquerading as bank executives? But Ima gotta remind Brother Ballentine that he was riding high and calling all of us stupid for a while, ‘til they cut him down at the knees. Folks gotta remember that when dey are riding hig!! I betcha he went home

Warren Ballentine and cried lak a baby when it was over. But how bout putting the real thieves in jail? But NOOOOOOO who’s going to continue to rob us, if dey the bankers and real estate crooks are

Bill Cosby family. Ima can’t stand much more, so let’s hope this will soon be over. Of course the women that have accused the Cos of this conduct got to be paid, then maybe it will be over. As the saying goes money talks, bs walks… -ImaWHERE’S THE RAUNERITES? Folks are wondering under what

Garry McCarthy does the Mayor keep him on when his leadership has not brought about any major reductions in this crime-ridden city? And most folks are worried about the title of Spike Lee’s movie, Chiraq while we are losing generations of our young people!!! Maybe, nobody wants to be the police chief here . . . yeah, that must be it … nobody wants to be police superintendent in Chiraq!!! www.chicagocrusader.com

SCOTUS Ruling Preserves Key Fair Housing Tool 5-4 Decision approves use of ‘disparate impact’ By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist A long-awaited decision by the United States Supreme Court led to a June 25 ruling that preserves the usage of “disparate impact,” an important legal principle sometimes known as the discriminatory effects standard. The majority opinion held that housing discrimination under the nation’s 1968 Fair Housing Act (FHA) occurs by effect — as well as by intent. Writing the decision, Justice Anthony Kennedy concluded, “[S]ince the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968 and against the backdrop of disparate impact liability in nearly every jurisdiction, many cities have become more diverse....The Court acknowledges the Fair Housing Act’s continued role in moving the Nation toward a more integrated society.” Joining Justice Kennedy to form a 5-4 majority were Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor. Although in 2013 the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) codi-

fied the use of disparate impact through its rule-making process, the case of Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs v. The Inclusive Communities Project, Inc., had its oral arguments on January 21. The decision was awaited by consumer advocates and mortgage industry professionals alike. Among civil rights and housing advocates, the decision was as widely applauded as the number of amicus or “friend of the court” briefs that were filed. The lengthy list of briefs came from diverse organizations including AARP, Hope Enterprise Corporation, Howard University School of Law Housing Clinic, Judicial Watch, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, National Black Law Students Association, the National Fair Housing Alliance and the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL). “When Americans are denied equal opportunity to housing, they are denied access to good jobs, quality education, safe streets, transit, and a clean and healthy environment, all of which are critical to leading healthy and prosperous lives,” said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

Charlene Crowell “We have observed, documented, and reported on disparate impact in mortgage lending, auto lending, student lending, and a suite of other financial services,” said Mike Calhoun, CRL president. “We have witnessed what happens when a single community cannot access such credit – and we know that these consequences are indicative of deeper, more systemic, more troubling realities in lending practices.” Calhoun’s claims are strongly substantiated by the recently released “2015 State of the Nation’s Housing” from Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. In part the report states, “And de-

spite the [housing] rebound in much of the nation, a number of minority and low-income neighborhoods remain severely distressed.” The report’s data points further illustrate the disproportionate problems faced by consumers of color: As of 2014, the homeownership rate for minorities remains 25.5 percentage points lower than that of whites; More than 40 percent of Latino and Black households with mortgages report paying interest rates above 5 percent, compared to less than a third of white and Asian/other minority households; • Housing wealth represents a much larger share of the net worth of the typical Black or Hispanic homeowner – 58 percent, than of the typical white homeowner – 37 percent; and • Negative equity - borrowers owing more than their homes are actually worth - is highly concentrated in minority and low- income neighborhoods. Beyond this report and the Supreme Court’s decision, in late May, joint action by the Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau brought a $9 million settlement against Provident Funding Associates, a private mortgage lender, found to have discriminated agai-

nst 14,000 Black and Latino borrows. Terms of the settlement include the appointment of an independent administrator who will contact affected consumers and distribute restitution payments. The leaders of two federal agencies – charged with enforcing the Fair Housing Act – added their voices and influence to the continuing fight for fair housing. “Bolstered by this important ruling, the Department of Justice will continue to vigorously enforce the Fair Housing Act with every tool at its disposal – including challenges based on unfair and unacceptable discriminatory effects,” said Attorney General Loretta Lynch. “The Supreme Court has made it clear that HUD can continue to use this critical tool to eliminate the unfair barriers that have deferred and derailed too many dreams,” said HUD Secretary Julian Castro. “Working with our partners on the ground, we will continue to do all we can to build a housing market that treats all Americans with basic dignity and respect.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. She can be reached at Charlene.crowell@responsiblelending.org.

Black owned business and the need for Racism Insurance Can you buy Insurance to cover racism and discrimination? You buy insurance to cover losses that are caused by perils. If you own a house or commercial real estate, you want insurance to cover the peril of fire. People who live on the West Coast want coverage for the peril of earthquake. Residents on the East Coast worry about wind from hurricanes and in the Plains of the Midwest, tornado is the peril that causes you to lose sleep at night. It is not unusual for people to want insurance to cover the perils that can cause devastating financial loss. That’s why it should not shock you to learn that the first insurance coverage for Black people in America insured the perils of racism and discrimination and it was provided by a Black insurance company. It was Philadelphia, 1787. The Quakers who ran the city saw slavery for what it was, an abomination, a practice clearly at odds with their Christian beliefs and doctrine. Black men and women in Philadelphia were free and as free men and women, they could find employment, purchase property and own businesses. By the end of the 18th century, Philadelphia was a city of hope to African Americans and home to a small but growing Black www.chicagocrusader.com

middle class. However, Philadelphia was not utopia. Racism and discrimination were sad facts of life for Blacks in the city. Although free, Black Philadelphians were at the mercy of the ruling class who could terminate employment at a whim, confiscate property on a pretense or ruin Black owned businesses when they proved too competitive for their white counterparts. In 1787, the most prominent among free Blacks in Philadelphia came together to form a mutual aid organization, the Free African Society of Philadelphia. Members were required to pay one schilling per month for one year into a fund established by the organization and after meeting that requirement, a member who fell on hard times could then receive more than 3 shillings each week. “After one year’s subscription from the date hereof, then to hand forth to the needy of this Society, if any should require, the sum of three shillings and nine pence per week of the said money: provided, this necessity is not brought on them by their own imprudence.” Source: 1st Article of Incorporation, Free African Society of Philadelphia. Many believed the Free African Society fund was modeled after the

Presbyterian Minister Fund, America’s first life insurance company, created more than 50 years earlier to provide aid and relief to widows and families of Presbyterian Ministers who died in the service of the church. But the rules for receiving aid from the Presbyterian Ministers Fund, as well as other mutual aid societies of the time were very detailed and limited in scope. That was not the case for the Free African Society. As you can see in the first article of the organization’s constitution, members of the society could seek aid only by becoming in need due to events unrelated to any imprudence on their part. Consider this, a Black person in 1787 who could afford to pay in one schilling per month for one year was a person of financial means. To receive aid from the fund, you had to be a member in good standing in the Society who suffered an economic reversal of fortune. For Black people of any means, the primary causes of economic loss in Philadelphia 1787 were racism and discrimination. Fast forward more than 225 years, are the perils of racism and discrimination still significant causes of financial loss for Black People? Is there a need for a new Free African Society?

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Matthew Cooper Sadly, the Free African Society does not exist any longer, nor do any of the Black Life Insurance companies that once served as the only source of life insurance for Black people in America. At one time, there were more than 20 Black owned and operated Life insurance companies in America. Today there are none operating as Life Insurance Companies. North Carolina Mutual, Atlanta Life, Supreme Life are just a few of the companies who provided a critical service to our community when other companies would not sell to

us. They were not perfect and in many cases not very competitive when Large Wall street companies ended discriminatory underwriting practices. However, they like the Free African Society served as a hedge against racism and discrimination. If we don’t do something quick, Black owned banks will go the same way as the Black life insurance companies. Seaway and Illinois Service Federal are the only institutions holding on. Black Life Insurance Companies, Black Banks, Black Insurance Brokers, Black owned Newspapers and Black owned businesses in general are the only real insurance against racism and discrimination. Franklin and her entourage were en route from Sioux City, IA where more than 30,000 fans had attended her sold-out concert, when her bus driver discovered the transmission was leaking. He stopped several times for transmission fluid but was unable to have repairs done because of the holiday weekend. The bus stopped on the highway around 1:20 a.m. Monday. Calls were made to several limousine and car services but all were closed or had no vehicles because of the late hour and the holiday weekend. Barbara Wright-Pryor Word has come through Africlassical.com that William Grant Still Music, the music publishing firm from which compositions of the William Grant Still (18951978) known as the Dean of American Composers can be obtained, has initiated a new series. William Grant Still Music, the prime source and more often only source for the music of this major composer (1895-1978), has initiated a new series, “Done found my lost sheep,” which, it might be guessed, is directed to the publication of music from the past — either in reissue or in first edition. Such a project has not been previously contemplated. The Arizona-based firm operated by the late composer’s daughter, Judith Ann Still, has long made available not only printed music, but audio and video recordings in various format, books, well as specialty products and materials directed for the young, providing extensive documentation on its namesake, but has recently become the source for works by others from Black music history — the Chevalier de SaintGeorges, as an example. The new series promises to provide new repertoire of older music for the student, teacher, scholar, and professional. A directory of currently available materials is located at williamgrantstill.com. The new series is initiated with the ballad for soprano and piano, “Henry,” previously available only in the first edition of 1812. With a vocal range well within the treble clef and piano accompaniment readily within the ability of most keyboardists, the song lends itself readily for student or professional recital. Now in production is the second title within the series, a version of the same song, which was featured in the City of London’s festivities for the 200th anniversary of the abolishment of slavery. The future of the series is projected to include works of France’s Saint-Georges, Cuba’s Joseph White y Lafitte, and England’s Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, along with works by Black Americans such as Will Marion Cook, 14

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking can be sincerely wrong, meaning they have every intention of doing right but don’t have a clue of the truth. How do I know, because it took me nearly 40 years to discover my idiosyncrasies and irritating habits that followed me the majority of my life? Even now, I continue to see bad habits and tiny nuisances that have grown into a strong hold and desperately needs to be removed. As a work in progress, when each person strives to do better—the benefits ripples. Just as the chain is only as strong as it’s weakness link, so is the family, the home, the community, the church, the school and the nation. As the song goes—don’t judge a man unless you have walked in his shoes. Scripture reminds us: Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye (Matthew 7:3 English Standard Version)? Growth and maturation has taught me not to speak ill or

Just a few days ago, I found myself discussing a situation that didn’t go too smoothly and ended in an argument. The conversation began discussing a person’s lacks of integrity, as well as the annoying trait of selfishness. However, the more we talked about that person, the more I realized the seemingly unending issues of my own—although somewhat different—yet, just as equally annoying. The names may change—but the people remain the same. If people knew better they would do better—there are so many folk who have no idea of how offensive certain actions are and how they directly or indirectly affect one’s character, reputation, family or friends. condescending of anyone, anytime, anywhere—ever. Now, I wish I could say I stayed true to avoiding useless chatter, but at least, I recognize it’s not the best use of my time. Why? It is by the grace of God that I’m not in the same predicament or even worst than you. Grace and mercy is the reason that I’m not doing, going, being or having the same symptoms and problems as any other troubled soul. Everyone has their own journey and with the vicissitudes of life— we must learn to carry our own cross. While your cross is different—the load is appropriate according to our spiritual make up and what we can handle. God doesn’t give you any more than you can bear. This is why we can’t judge someone without being in their shoes. Given the same circumstances and experiences, you could very well go the same route. When it all boils down, the truth

of the matter is—I can’t talk about anyone. Neither can you. I can see clearly now that God’s mercy is vital for everyday survival. Just as we stand in need of His fountains of mercy, as much as possible, we should forever be mindful of our need to extend mercy to others without respect of persons or restraint. Go ahead, now is a great time to use the golden rule and bless someone with a dose of mercy—you will find yourself being inevitably blessed as well. Latest play at Goodman . . . (Cont’d from page 12) unannounced, accompanied by her hunky young lover Spike (Jordan Brown), who sparks a friendship with the beautiful girl next door Nina (Rebecca Buller) much to Masha’s dismay. When Masha reveals plans that will upend the family, long-repressed resentments bubble over in a weekend full of wild costume parties, Voodoo dolls and surprise romance. The sibling rivalry centers around the fact that Vanya and Sonia, although she was adopted, stayed at home and didn’t embark on any careers because they were taking care of their ailing parents. But being homebound also seems to have made them both resentful toward Masha, who pursued an acting career and was doing very well at it. She was responsible for the household expenses at the family house. So, when she comes to town, flirtatious boyfriend in tow, she has plans on selling the home. But where will that leave Vanya and Sonia, who don’t have jobs and can’t see where they would go if they have to exit their home? After the parents died, it seemed as if Sonia went into a depression, and this is evident the first morning because she is so full of rage. It is revealed that this rage is really loneliness manifesting itself.

Cassandra decides to put a Voodoo curse on Masha that has her literally writhing in pain, not knowing why. But Cassandra also has premonitions about events or people that serve the family well when they are faced with life-changing decisions. There is a lot of soul searching going around. Masha figures that she is just afraid of becoming an aging actress, and this is probably why she has been so arrogant and patronizing to her siblings. Vanya is upset, as well, that the world seemed to have passed him by. He exhibits his frustration in a chastisement of Spike that covers everything from the television show “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” to an explanation of how the old rotary phones worked, to the manual “licking of a postage stamp” and text messaging. And Sonia finally might find happiness in the new guy that has come into her life. However, in the end, it is determined that it would be in the best interests of family to keep the home and for Masha to continue to support her brother and sister. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” earned unanimous acclaim in its 2013 Broadway debut; awards included the Tony Award for Best Play, the Outer Circle Critics Award for Best Play, the Drama League

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Cont’d from page 4) conducting “listening tours” throughout the city, but will not give any locations in advance. Really Garry? Four years after he started the job he decided to have these tours, something that should have happened early in his tenure. Maybe McCarthy is still around not because of any sense of loyalty from the mayor but because no one 16

wants the job. Not only would they be heading up a department in a city with no money for new programs or the ability to hire large numbers of cops; they would have to work for one of, if not the most egotistical mayor in the U.S. That is not a combination that people dream about regarding their next job. We need to figure out a way to get rid of both of them. Ernie Lewis

Award for Best Production of a Play, the Drama Desk Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Production and the OffBroadway Alliance Award for Best Play. Critics called it “a comic tour de force” (Village Voice), “the funniest play in town” (Bloomberg News), an “utterly refreshing…sweet, witty play with a huge pop culture appetite” (Associated Press) and “terrifically kooky” (Entertainment Weekly). “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” is a funny play. However, I enjoyed the second act better than the first. Spike’s character is kind of an over-thetop boy toy, and some of his parts, i.e., an extended strip tease, seemed to me to be out of place. I just kept thinking that maybe this was not necessary. Butler is great, as always, in her role as Cassandra. She is an award-winning favorite on the local theatre scene, having many credits at the Goodman, which include “Pullman Porter Blues,” “Ain’t Behavin’,” “Purlie” and “A Christmas Carol,” and many other credits throughout other performance venues. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” runs through July 26. The grass is greener for Serena at Wimbledon Legend poised to win another prestigious title after hard times, challenges By Erick Johnson She’s Black and proud, green for Wimbledon and red with passion. Put it all together and you have the colors of the Pan-African flag or the Liberation Flag. It’s time to wave them at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Many pundits and television commentators sometime call Serena Williams a drama queen for her outbursts, defiance or timeouts during matches. But Williams’ career has embodied the qualities of the African culture. Time and tough situations have turned many Blacks into fighters seeking the American dream. Now, after hard fought-matches at The Championships, Williams is once again poised to capture tennis’ greatest crown. She advanced to the semifinals after coming from behind to defeat 23rd ranked Victoria Azarenka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Up next is 4th-ranked Maria Sharapova, a rival whom Williams has a 172 head-to head winning record. Williams is the last remaining Black player in the tournament. Venus Williams, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, Donald Young, Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilifried Tsonga are all out. Williams was on the brink of elimination in the early rounds, but true to her form, she is still standing in this

fortnight. Her title hopes grew even brighter after Wimbledon defending champion Petra Kvitova lost to Jelena Jankovic on Saturday, July 4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. A win here would give Williams another “Serena Slam,” a feat that involves winning all four Grand Slam tournaments – U.S. Open, Australian, French, Wimbledon in a row. Williams shares the story of many famous and ordinary Blacks who have become fighters in their own right after enduring years of inequality in neighborhoods, boardrooms, stadiums and just about everywhere in America. Fighting to win is now a part of Black culture. Success becomes a reward for defiance, grit and other hard qualities that many coaches cannot teach even in well-equipped country clubs in America’s affluent suburbs. All week, this was evident on the hallowed grounds of The All England Lawn and Croquet Club, where Serena mustered thrilling comebacks against her opponents. On Saturday, July 4, nearly 25 years after Black tennis legend, Arthur Ashe defeated world No. 1 tennis player Jimmy Connors in a classic Wimbledon final, on the same court, Williams disposed of top British player Heather Watson in a match that lit up Centre Court. Watson was just one game away from ousting the five-time Wimbledon champion in the third round. But Serena broke Watson’s serve and held her own in a thrilling 6-2, 4-6, 75 comeback that makes one wonder whether she viewed past footage of

FROM THE INNER city to Wimbledon, hard times has helped shape Serena Williams into a champion, as well as her sister Venus, who serves during the sisters’ fourth round match at The All England Tennis and Croquet Club. (Photo courtesy of The Championships, Wimbledon) Muhammad Ali unleashing his devastating hooks on his opponents. Bring more strawberries and cream, please. The cheers for Watson grew so loud, Williams complained to the chair umpire, then waved her index finger to the crowd and said “Don’t try me.” Black residents and athletes expressed themselves this way in neighborhoods across America, but Williams gave a piece of it to a white dominated crowd that tested her limits. Even against her sister, Serena remained a fighter, showing little mercy against her newly turned 35-year-old

sister whose birthday was on June 17. In the first set, Serena just needed 33 minutes–her age–to put away her aging sister, who hasn’t won this Grand Slam title since 2008. In the end, Serena dominated, 6-4, 6-3. Once again the match drew scrutiny and doubts from critics who believe the sisters go easy when playing against one another. Translation: Serena always has a hurdle to climb or critics to convince and she does it brilliantly. But in her post match interview after beating her sister, Serena said she brought her full game to Centre Court.

“I knew that playing someone like Venus I had to be solid,” Williams said. “I had to cut down a lot of unforced errors. I had to take a lot of chances.” “Serena is the best in the world,” singer John Legend told a Wimbledon sportscaster after watching the sisters battled it out on Centre Court on Monday, July 6. The ladies Wimbledon Championship final will be televised at 8 a.m. on ESPN on Saturday, July 11. Viewers can also watch the rebroadcast of the match at 3 p.m. the same day on local station WLS-7 ABC Chicago.
