Salaam restaurant re-opens after 12-year hiatus By Wendell Hutson The popular Salaam restaurant re-opened last week after closing more than a decade ago and is expected to boost economic development for the South Side. “It (Salaam) brings back pride and productivity to the community,” said Alderman Latasha Thomas, whose 17th ward includes the Auburn-Gresham community where Salaam, 706 W. 79th St., is located. “The restaurant promotes a healthy eating environment for families and was reopened with no tax-increment financing from the city. It also brings job opportunities for residents.” A VIP reception took place July 1 and on June 27 Minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, met with clergy and religious leaders at the $5 million renovated Salaam to discuss among other things the rebirth of the restaurant. Here is an excerpt of his speech to clergy members. “We built the Salaam restaurant with steel and concrete; that’s why we could close it for 12 years and come back and find it still here! Because brothers and sisters: For you, there is nothing “too good!” For you, we call this “The Palace of The People,” Minister Farrakhan told the crowd of over 100. “From our Bakery, we intend to put out “Your Daily Bread”: Fresh-baked bread made of the finest ingredients. The Salaam Restaurant also has

a wonderful vegetarian cuisine. But for those who just “gotta have” a tenderloin steak, or lamb, come on here to The Salaam!” Upstairs on the second floor is where a private banquet hall is located along with Minister Farrakhan’s private dining room that also can be rented. A piano room adorns the banquet hall called “Alvan’s Corner,” which is named after Minister Farrakhan’s late brother. Currently, the restaurant has 40 employees with the majority coming from the Auburn-Gresham community, according to Carla X, executive assistant to Calvin Hollis, who serves as the general manager for Salaam. “We are still hiring and we hope to hire more people from the community,” Carla X told the Crusader. “I think it is important that people know that Salaam is not just for the Nation of Islam but the public as well. If I had to describe Salaam to someone unfamiliar with it I would tell them that it is the ‘jewel’ of 79th Street.” The air-conditioned restaurant has a free parking lot across the street with security; a ‘fine’ dining room; a 300-seat banquet hall available for private use; a bakery where an assortment of pastries, such as birthday cakes, can be ordered; and a variety of meals, such as hamburger and fries, sandwiches, salads, fried chicken, pizza, and (Continued on page 2)

Saunders Delegates to the 40th International Convention of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME), elected Lee A. Saunders to be president and Laura Reyes to be secretary-treasurer of the union representing 1.6 million public service workers. Lee A. Saunders received 683,628 votes to 582,358 for Danny Donohue. In the race for secretary-treasurer, the union’s second highest ranking officer, Laura Reyes received 661,413 votes to 603,624 for Alice Goff. The election was administered by the American Arbitration Association. “Both Laura and I are committed to our
members and cherish this union,” said AFSCME President Elect Lee A. Saunders. “We had a vigorous and energetic campaign, but now the union will pull together to win victories for working families and our members all across this great country. We know that Wall Street and their allies are engaged in an all-out assault against our members and the services we provide. They know that AFSCME stands in the way of their efforts to destroy the middle class. We are united in our commitment to stand up for the men and women who care for America’s children, nurse the sick, plow our streets, collect the household trash and guard our prisons. Our members are a
cross-section of America, not some elite group as our opponents try to claim. We are energized and ready for the battles ahead.” Pres. Gerald W. McEntee, who retired after 31 years as AFSCME president, said the delegates’ decision to elect Lee and Laura “strengthens our leadership and will enhance our ability to face the challenges that await us around the country.” Saunders will be the fourth president of AFSCME since the union’s formation 75 years ago in Madison, Wis. Arnold Zander served as AFSCME’s first president from Lee A. Saunders

Black church initiated liquor store crackdowns By Wendell Hutson The success that a Black church had in shutting down a South Side liquor store is what motivated the city to begin cracking down on liquor stores deemed “troubled” businesses. John Hannah, pastor of New Life Covenant Church, 5512 S. Michigan Ave. successfully led his members in several protest marches last summer outside Happy Liquors & Food, 7901 S. Cottage Grove Ave., until the store temporarily closed and implemented changes recommended by community residents. Happy Liquors has occupied that location for over 30 years. Happy Liquors was closed from April 2011 to July 2011 for building code violations, said Juan Alvarez, manager of Happy Liquors. Among the changes Happy Liquors made is banning the sale of malt liquor beer and Swisher tobacco products and it
now has an armed, security guard on duty all day. But not all liquor stores are bad for the community, added Alvarez. “Liquor stores are unfairly targeted and blamed for crime in the community,” he said. “What the city is doing to shut down liquor stores is going after them for building code violations, which many liquor stores have no control over if they are a tenant themselves.” Regardless who is at fault, Pastor Hannah said it is part of a church’s responsibility to help improve the communities it serves. “We could not sit back any longer and allow this liquor store to continue being a danger to the Grand Crossing neighborhood (on the South Side),” Hannah said. “No one cares about our communities but us so it is us who must take the lead in making sure that local businesses are sensitive to our needs.”
THE BLACK CHURCH initiated a campaign against liquor stores, the brain child of Pastor John Hannah who heads up the New Life Covenant Church on the South Side. Pastor Hannah speaks at a Monday news conference with Mayor Rahm Emanuel about his efforts to close down a “troubled” liquor store in his community. 60 Pastors Adopt Violence Reduction Strategy This week The Leaders Network, a clergy-based disaster relief and social justice advocacy organization, held an emergency coalition meeting with 60 ministers and pastors from different communities and cultures to strategize how the faith community can respond to the escalating violence in Chicago neighborhoods. The meeting was at the Greater St. John Bible Church 1256 N. Waller, where Reverend Ira Acree is the senior pastor and facilitated by Pastor Cy Fields, Leaders Network President. The pastors discussed the development of a Faith Community Clearinghouse highlighting the various programs facilitated by churches and other faith-based organizations. Pastor Ira Acree stated, “As I listened to the pastors talk about the number of youth and children activities that their churches currently

Pastor Jaques Conway pointed out the challenge faith leaders must take to the entertainment industry that negatively influences many youth with their violent video games and music lyrics. Pastor Marshall Hatch announced plans for a citywide multiracial ecumenical “Peace Weekend.” The weekend will urge Chicagoans to attend mosques, synagogues, and churches to promote the respect for human life, moral regard, and community mobilization to stop violence. The clergy coalition will also become a vehicle to inform the general public about what community-based organizations are doing to make Chicago a safer place. Larry Greenfield of the American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago stated “We’re looking forward to mobilizing our clergy group to help address the violence issue in our city.” The clergy unanimously voted to adopt the strategic proposals and initiate an implementation plan of action.

The alderman said too often liquor storeowners in minority communities are not from the community. “It’s funny how many of these liquor store owners come from a religious background where they do not drink alcohol but will sell alcohol (especially in minority communities),” explained Dowell. “I admit that not all liquor stores are bad businesses but those that are need to either clean up their act up or be shut down.” But where liquor stores are located is not what bothers the mayor, who lives on the North Side, the most. “What upsets me the most is to know that kids are going into these liquor stores as if they were convenience stores just because they sell pop, milk and snacks,” Emanuel added. “Businesses must serve as anchors in their communities, but some serve as

A recent incident at a West Side liquor store highlighted the need for the city’s new crackdown on retail stores Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said. gunfire near the store. There are 1,067 businesses that hold a package goods license, which essentially means the store sells alcohol to go, said Jennifer Lipfold, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. And not all businesses that sell package goods are traditional liquor stores. Some are Walgreens, CVS and 7Eleven. In 2010, there was 113 new licenses issued to businesses that sold liquor and in 2011 it jumped to 183, according to Lipfold. 3
OPINION
EDITORIAL THE EPIDEMIC OF BLACK-ONBLACK MURDERS MUST STOP! The Black community in America is experiencing a surge in killings. No, the Klan is not at work; this situation is the result of Black-on-Black animosity. According to the online blog Free Republic, 1,018 Blacks were murdered by other Blacks 47 days after the Trayvon Martin murder. Moreover, 8,000 to 9,000 Blacks are murdered each year, with 93 percent being committed by other Blacks. And according to National Review Online, from 2008 through January of 2012, 530 young people were killed in Chicago. Over 80 percent of those homicides occurred in Black or Latino communities. Author John Fountain, in an online article titled “Black-on-Black victims could fill our stadiums,” writes “The national tally of Black males 14 and older murdered in America from 1976 through 2005, according to U.S. Bureau of Justice statistics, is 214,661.” These murders are mostly committed by members of the same race. In Chicago, an up spike in murders is increasingly taking the lives of innocent by-standers, many of them very young children. Some people think that this is a matter of poor sharpshooting, but there is a more ominous reason behind this situation. It is called EBK, which is, according to local gang members, a gangland policy, and stands for EveryBody Killed. No joke. It is hard to imagine that many of our youth are growing up so cold-hearted that such a policy would be in effect. But the fact remains that gangsters are killing each other and innocent members of the community at alarming rates. Liberal pundits become upset when people talk about the thug culture and accuse them of criminalizing our youth. They blame a lack of jobs and poverty for this sorry state of affairs. And some apologists say that white people kill each other too, it just doesn’t get the publicity that Black-on-Black crime gets. If this is true, do two wrongs make a right? What difference does this make when our people are dying? The truth is, however, that many of these youths call themselves thugs, and are proud of it! They dress the part; the style that too many young Black males have adopted, the sagging pants, is couture straight out of prisons. If we go back further, according to some, it has its origins in slavery. Whatever the case, a large number of our youths have adopted a destructive lifestyle that has its origins in bondage! Admittedly, Black-on-Black murder is a very difficult problem to solve, which has origins in self-hate, and it’s certain that there are no easy solutions. Many people are frustrated and don’t know what to do, and the result is that people are hiding their heads in the sand hoping that the problem will go away. It will not go away until something is done. There are at least three things that would have an impact over the long run, however. One - absent Black men must become fathers and start taking an active interest in changing the conditions in their communities and families; Two - Black women must hold their children accountable when they exhibit certain behaviors instead of turning a blind eye because their children are bringing home ill-gotten, but much needed, cash, and Three - a broad campaign of intolerance of criminal behavior, including that promoted by music videos, must be created. These are just starters, but they can represent a beginning salvo in an effort to address a very challenging problem. Black-on-Black murders must cease and desist! A luta continua.
It is not often that when one recognizes when he or she is living through history, but last Thursday we all had that opportunity. The Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act will no doubt be recorded as one of the most historical moments of the 21st Century. Yes, this may even eclipse President Obama’s election as the nation’s first African American president. This healthcare ruling is on par with the implementation of Medicaid/Medicare and Social Security. The ramifications of this new healthcare law will be felt favorably by more than 99 percent of the U.S. population. Healthcare for all Americans has been a 100-year battle. We watched former First Lady Hillary Clinton take on this initiative without a modicum of success. This time the president was warned of the political liabilities, chose to ignore them and made history. Unfortunately, the president’s likely opponent in the November election, Mitt Romney, wants to continue to politicize this law. Romney’s claim that if elected he will work from day one to repeal this legislation shows how out of

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR You have just lived through history Dear Editor:
touch he is with the country. The man obviously does not understand white, suburban Republicans have lost jobs too. Rather than talking about shoring up the economy and increasing employment he is making the nation’s issues personal. We don’t have time for such foolishness. But I believe most importantly to your readers, this new law should end the question about what has President Obama done for Black people. The new law stops insurance companies from excluding people because of preexisting conditions. Asthma, hypertension, diabetes are extremely prevalent in the Black community and have led to many of us not being able to afford insurance. He led the bailout of the auto industry, saving hundreds of thousands of Black workers’ jobs. It is crystal clear that this president brings a new style and thought process to the job. We might not like how the process moves but it is extremely difficult to disagree with the outcomes. Mark Thompson

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
The Time has come for Economic Unity By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist For the love of Africa, we must commit to becoming a unified Diaspora. That unity cannot happen without economic engagement. Booker T. Washington told us over 100 years ago that if we start our own businesses and begin to do business with each other; not only will we survive but indeed prosper. We should adhere to his wisdom and make it so that it becomes a campaign to incubate businesses wherever we are and to start and do business with each other globally. I am talking about trade and investment throughout the African Diaspora which will create jobs, healthcare, infrastructure and wealth. The land of our origin is blessed with more natural resources than any other continent on this earth. It is only fitting for us to use that as a basis for our new found entrepreneurship. Every child of African descent should have a focus on doing business in some form with Africa and creating business relationships with business persons from Africa. That will be the key to our commonality. There are one billion souls on the continent of Africa. South America possesses over 150 million members of the African Di-
Harry C. Alford aspora. North America approaches 50 million and the Caribbean is predominantly Black. Then there is adequate representation within the populations of other continents. One thing, unfortunately, is common in most places; members of the African Diaspora are on the bottom rung of the economic ladder. This must change but it will not change until we communicate with each other; share best practices and spend our money with each other. 2012 will be known as the Year of Organization. We will be participating in a series of summits and conventions that will organize our entrepreneurs and put them on
the “Same Page.” We will constantly call out to the African Diaspora and begin this process. The following are the events we are scheduling: National Black Chamber of Commerce 20th Annual Convention, Four Seasons Hotel, Atlanta, Ga. July 19 – 21, 2012. The theme is “Good Policies Lead to a Great Economy.” This event will be packed full of content including a matchmaker for our members and over 100 entrepreneurs from Africa (mainly Bots wana). DON’T MISS THIS! www.nbccconvention.org. Trans-Atlantic International Trade and Investment Symposium, August 1, 2012, Hilton Trinidad, Trinidad-Tobago: This event will gather entrepreneurs from North America, South America (inclusive of the Caribbean) and Africa. The theme is “Reinventing the Triangle” (revolving interaction amongst the three continents). NBCC President/CEO Harry C. Alford will give the Keynote Address at this historical event. More details to follow shortly. Leon H. Sullivan Summit IX, August 20 – 24, 2012, Malabo, Equatorial Guinea: The NBCC aims to populate this summit with our members with the intent of learning the business environment of each sub-Saharan African nation
as they will be represented at this very popular event. Standard charter delegate packages start at $2,012 (which includes coach airfare, hotel double occupancy, official Summit meals, and Summit events). Why Equatorial Guinea? There you will experience the natural wonders of The Gulf of Guinea courtesy of the Equatorial Guinean Government and the Equatorial Guinean Tourist Board. Renowned for its many exotic beaches and forests, Equatorial Guinea offers something new and exciting to discover for both the new and the most seasoned explorers. www.sullivansummit.org. NBCC Trade Mission to Ethiopia, mid – September, 2012: This nation with the second largest population in Africa is opening up its economy and is becoming a true free market. It is rich in resources and is cultivating a new entrepreneurial class. Let’s go and meet them. Fly with us on the classy Ethiopian Air Lines and visit the historical city of Addis Ababa. The history of the nation is noted in the Bible and dates back to the pharaohs of Egypt. Exact details will follow soon. The First PanAfrican Entrepreneurs Conference, November 15 – 17, 2012, Four Seasons Hotel, Houston, Texas:
Our sister organization will make its debut with a bang. The intent is to organize PanAfrican entrepreneurs and set policy, issue positions and initiatives that relate to trade, business development and wealth building where African Diaspora populations exist. Delegates will meet via online at regular occasions. The November conferences will assess our progress and reset our agenda for the following year. We are developing a website, www.panafricanec.org, which can be read in various languages including Swahili. This event will be historical so plan to attend. Post Conference Trade Mission to Zambia, Nov. 21 – 26, 2012, Lusaka, Zambia: This event will take the momentum from the above conference and begin applying it to one of the most stable nations on the continent of Africa. The English speaking nation has a dynamic American Chamber of Commerce and we are working with this office to ensure a viable, serious business experience with results. More details to follow. Healthcare momentum shifts toward Obama By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Since the enactment of the Affordable Care Act two years ago, polls have consistently shown that a slight plurality of Americans have opposed the measure. But public opinion now seems to be shifting in President Obama’s favor, with a slim plurality supporting the landmark healthcare measure. The Kaiser Health Tracking Poll, released a week after the Supreme Court ruling upholding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), shows that 47 percent approve of the Supreme Court ruling, 43 percent oppose and 10 percent are uncertain. Not surprisingly, as is the case with so many social issues, there is a deep political divide, with 83 percent of Democrats preferring to keep the law as is or expanding it and 79 percent of Republicans wanting to repeal it. Independents are divided, with 49 percent wanting to keep or expand the law and 41 percent favoring repeal. A clear majority of Americans – 56 percent – are tired of the The Chicago Crusader
George E. Curry political bickering and want opponents to “Stop their efforts to block the law and move on to other national problems.” An even larger 82 percent of Democrats share that sentiment. However, if Republicans have their way, that is unlikely to happen soon. According to the poll, 69 percent of opponents want to “Continue trying to block the law from being implemented.” Among independents, 51 percent favor moving on to other issues, and 41 percent are for continuing the fight. Because the Affordable Care Act was modeled after the health plan created by Mitt Romney
when he was governor of Massachusetts, Romney is in an untenable position as he tries to draw a nonexistent distinction between what he did as governor and what Obama is supporting as president. That political contortion, delivered in the midst of blistering attacks on what Romney characterizes as “Obamacare,” has led to major flip-flopping in the camp of the Republican standard bearer who is trying to shed that label. Central to the debate is Chief Justice John Roberts’ majority opinion that ACA is constitutional under Congress’ powers of taxation. A key provision of the health law is the individual mandate, a requirement that those who can afford it must buy insurance or face a financial consequence. Obama has argued that because a person has the option of purchasing health insurance – a choice one does not enjoy when it comes to taxes – the punishment for failing to comply should be more accurately described as a penalty, not a tax. Romney’s problem is that he made the identical argument as governor. For political reasons,
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
however, Romney does not want to repeat that argument as Republicans try to use the ruling as proof that the president’s signature legislation is a massive tax hike on Americans. On the CBS News broadcast “Face the Nation,” House Speaker John Boehner said, “It’s now a tax, since the court says it’s a tax.” That is directly at odds with what Romney said as governor. Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior advisor to Romney, said in an interview on MSNBC: “The governor believes that what we put in place in Massachusetts was a penalty and he disagrees with the court’s ruling that the mandate was a tax.” But “the governor” promptly threw Fehrnstrom under the bus. “While I agreed with the dissent [that a health mandate is not a tax], that’s overtaken by the fact that the majority of the court said it’s a tax and therefore it is a tax,” Romney said in an interview with CBS News, contradicting himself and his senior campaign aide. Politics aside, past polls showing most Americans opposed to the Affordable Care Act may have been misleading. Although the public expressed opposition to Saturday, July 14, 2012
the law, when the actual provisions of ACA are described, there is widespread support – even among Republicans. A poll released last month by Reuters/Ipsos found: Eighty-six percent of Republicans favor “banning insurance companies from cancelling policies because a person becomes ill.” Eighty percent of Republicans favor “creating an insurance pool where small businesses and uninsured have access to insurance exchanges to take advantage of large group pricing benefits.” Seventy-eight percent of Republicans support “banning insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.” Fifty-seven percent of Republicans support “providing subsidies on a sliding scale to aid individuals and families who cannot afford health care insurance.” Fifty-four percent of Republicans favor “requiring companies with more than 50 employees to provide insurance for their employees.” (Continued on page 16) 5

Dr. Conrad Worrill African people throughout the world are uniformly under the yoke of white supremacy. This has created tremendous problems for us as a people. There are solutions to these problems that we must be reminded of time and

Our thinkers and activists of the nineteenth and twentieth-centuries have set forth many of the solutions to the problems and crisis of African people. From time to time, movements have unfolded that have picked up on the ideas of these thinkers and activists. When this has occurred serious challenges to breaking the yoke of white supremacy seemed within reach. However, due to internal and external manipulations of these movements they became short lived. For example, one of the most successful of these movements was the Garvey Movement of the 1920s. As African people in the twenty-first-century, it is imperative that we collectively join and participate in the Reparations Movement as we seek to dismantle white supremacy. Let us briefly examine some of the ideas our leaders presented in the nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries that should be the foundation for establishing the framework for the growing Reparations Movement at this critical juncture in the history of African people.
Jean Jacques Dessalines, one of the leaders of the Haitian Revolution in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-centuries said, “Never again shall a colonist, or European, set his foot upon this territory with the title of master or proprietor. This resolution shall henceforward form the basis of our constitution.” Henry Highland Garnet, a midnineteenth-century Black Nationalist thinker and organizer explained, in the following statement that African people need “…a grand center of Negro nationality, from which shall flow the streams of commercial, intellectual, and political power which shall make colored people respected everywhere.” Martin Robeson Delany, Harvard trained physician of the mid-nineteenth-century and leading Black Nationalist espoused, “We must act for ourselves— We are a nation within a nation; as the Poles in Russia, the Hungarians in Austria, the Welsh, Irish, and Scotch in the British dominions. But we have been, by our oppressor, despoiled of our purity, and corrupted in our native characteristics, so that we have inherited their vices and but few of their virtues, leaving us really a
broken people.” Edward Wilmot Blyden, a leading educator and Pan Africanist of the mid and late nineteenthcenturies said, “We need some African power, some great center of the race where our physical, pecuniary, and intellectual strength may be collected. We need some spot where such an influence may go forth in behalf of the race as shall be felt by the nations. We are now so scattered and divided that we can do nothing… So long as we remain thus divided, we may expect imposition… An African nationality is our great need… We must build up Negro States; we must establish and maintain the various institutions.” One of the greatest Pan Africanist and Black Nationalist leaders of the twentieth-century, Marcus Mosiah Garvey succinctly states, “Africa for the Africans at home and abroad.” Another great Black Nationalist leader of the twentieth-century, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad challenged that “we must do for self.” Professor Joseph Harris in commenting on the work of William Leo Hansberry, one of our leading authorities on African Histo-
ry in the twentieth-century said, “Hansberry realized that the African students not only had to contend with life in this racist country, but that they also had the obligation to return to their countries with both the skills acquired at Howard and an Afrocentric perspective of their heritage.” And finally, the editorial commentary in the Afrocentric World Review, Vol. I, No. I, Winter 1973, explained, “In this crucial world wide scramble for Africa, African minds and African bodies, we must proclaim in our own right African interest first… Blacks must cease becoming a vest pocket people for other national interests and world pursuits, and hasten to revive the age old traditional quest for a World African Center that will make us once again masters in our own house.” In this spirit, let us listen to the wisdom of our ancestors as we continue to forge ahead in strengthening our Black Liberation and Reparations Movements. Our challenge is to study our history, listen to the wisdom of our ancestors, and take appropriate action. Long live the Spirit and Wisdom of our Ancestors!
Are Republicans causing high unemployment? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist The unemployment rate has hovered above 8 percent for several months, most recently holding ground at 8.2 percent, the same as last month. Meanwhile the African American unemployment rate went up, technically to 14.4 percent, and we all know that means the real rate is even higher, in excess of 25 percent. Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney interrupted his vacation to gloat about the number of Americans who are experiencing misery, and his gloating might be at least somewhat amusing were this not the same man who says he likes to fire people. The 8.2 percent unemployment is not in President Obama’s best interest. Many who are feeling the misery and pain are open to an alternative, even if it is one as muddled and confused as Mr. Romney who doesn’t support health care reform, but pushed a plan similar to the one President 6
employment rate goes, the better his chances for re-election. The better news for President Obama is that many people don’t snap in-
to campaign mode until after Labor Day. People want jobs, to be sure, but the summer numbers even if they are level, don’t alarm everyone. The employment reports that our president has to pay the most attention to are those released September 7 and October 5. This is when Republicans will get all cranked up and suggest that President Obama can’t handle the fractured economy he inherited. Can the unemployment rate drop? Well if Republicans would pass the American Jobs Act, an actual plan for employment, it might. It is in the interest of the nation’s unemployed, but not in the interest of Republican chicanery, for the American Jobs Act to be passed. In some ways, Republicans are starving their constituents to thwart President Obama. Similarly, when state and local governments have to lay people off because their budgets are tight, the federal government has previously stepped in to help. Part of the recovery funds went to state and local governments,

some who turned the money down in the interest of fiscal conservatism. There the Republicans go again, hurting their constituents to thwart President Obama. Part of the reason Republicans can get away with this is because no one is pressuring them. Just like the Tea Party has pushed these people to the right, somebody needs to push them back to center. The Tea Party has virtually obliterated the notion of a moderate Republican, but there must be some out there, and what has to happen is that somebody needs to push back. The African American community has to push too. While few of us are Republicans, many of us live in districts with Republican representation. These representatives need to hear from us, and from our neighbors, not always African American. And these representatives need to hear from our mayors, not always Democratic, who can pressure them to do the right thing by cities. Meanwhile, Republicans fiddle
while Rome burns because no one has called them on it. Whenever Mr. Romney says President Obama has no plan, somebody needs to remind him of the American Jobs Act. Whenever Mr. Romney starts babbling about health care, someone ought to throw Massachusetts in his face. And when the braying bunch of bobbleheads who call themselves the Tea Party get worked up over the economy, we need to ask them, how many people in your family are unemployed; how much Social Security does your mama have, don’t your kids have student loans, does everyone in your family have health care. Fuelled by race matters and rhetoric, working class white people are organized for Romney, someone who would cut education, health care, and Social Security and put those “savings” into military spending and tax cuts for the wealthy. In other words, and not for the first time, working class white people are working against their own economic in(Continued on page 16) The Chicago Crusader

TV-viewers of a few years back may remember a sit-com called “Car 54 Where Are You? Well, if Ima didn’t know any better she would have thought there was a movement afoot to start up the program again, when calls were heard trying to find where Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. is, was and where he will be in the future! Daddy Senior was on television the other morning since he was pumping up his annual convention and he gave as much information as we already had. Staffers, who Ima don’t know specifically which one or ones, put out a news release of eight lines last week that didn’t help. It said, “Congressman Jackson’s medical condition is more serious than we thought and initially believed. Recently, we have been made aware that he has grappled with certain physical and emotional ailments privately for a long period of time. At present, he is undergoing further evaluation and treatment at an in-patient medical facility. According to the preliminary diagnosis from his doctors, Congressman Jackson will need to receive extended in-patient treatment as well as continuing medical treatment thereafter. We ask that you keep Congressman Jackson and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult period.” Okay, but it would be nice to know what we’re praying for. Now Mark Allen has come out and criticized U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Luis Guitterez that said it was time for Junior to show up and tell his voters what the hell is going on. Since Mark thinks it’s okay to not reveal the nature of Jesse’s problem, then if we thought he knew anything about his whereabouts or the problem, his phone (if it is on) would be ringing off the hook. Now what makes all of this suspicious is the fact that he went off a while back and had that “fat re-

The President need to get some new advisors or at least some advisors that know something about Black folks. Axelrod and the gang keeps telling him to stay his distance from Black folks. I hate to tell them but it may be a little bit hard when he has a Black contingent at the White House that is the telltale sign that he has some contact with us’n. For sure Michelle ain’t no Coblanasian or anything like that, Bo is pure’d Black and let’s face it the Motherin-law is a 100 percenter. Now in between the President and the pure Black folks are dem little girls who inherited a portion of the President’s white side, but dey can’t pass for nothing but what they are. But besides the color issue the President needs all of the Black folks dey can find to get to the polls on election day, but so far ain’t nobody fired up and excited about marking no ballot or punching no card, pulling no handle, what it takes to vote. Kerry Wood to host free baseball clinic in Englewood By J. Coyden Palmer Retired Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood is bringing a free, threeday baseball clinic to the Englewood community next week in an effort to increase exposure to the sport for African Americans. Sponsored by his charity organization, The Wood’s Family Foundation in partnership with the Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Schools, the clinic will be held July 16 thru the 18 at Ogden Park, 6500 S. Racine. The clinic begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. all three days. A free lunch is included. As the number of African Americans playing in the major leagues has decreased dramatically in the last 20 years, many are trying to rectify the situation. Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City said organizations like R.B.I. (Reviving Baseball in Inner-cities) are committed to getting more Black Americans involved. Speaking via telephone on the day of Major League Baseball’s All Star Game, Kendrick said events like the one Wood is hosting have made some inroads but more needs to be done. “We have identified several factors that have led to a decrease in participation in the sport over the years such as fewer fathers in
Kerry Wood Black homes, athletes choosing other sports, baseball not being the ‘cool’ sport anymore and the expense with playing on a travel team to get our kids the exposure they need to college and minor league scouts,” Kendrick said. “We try to explain to the kids that professional baseball players have the best contracts in all of sports, which the sport doesn’t take a toll on your body like basketball and football do and the baseball union is one of the strongest.” John Scott is the chief strategist for the Office of Family and Saturday, July 14, 2012
Community Engagement for the Chicago Public Schools. He said Kerry Wood and his wife Sarah are committed to providing clinics for children throughout the city. “Last year he did a clinic on the West Side so this time they wanted to do something for the kids on the South Side and do it in one of the communities hardest hit by violence,” Scott said. Kendrick was selected as president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum last year and has worked for the 20 year-old museum since it opened. He said one of the problems is that Black baseball players no longer live in the Black community. He said when Ernie Banks was an All-Star with the Cubs; his home was on the South Side of Chicago so kids in that neighborhood got to see him on a daily basis. “Now with the amount of money professional athletes make, they can afford to move to more affluent communities,” Kendrick said. “But we lose when they no longer come back to many of the neighborhoods they grew up in. It was vital to the sport when a kid could walk up to Satchel Paige or Josh Gibson back in the day…that had a great influence on them. They saw them not just as baseball players but men in the (Continued on page 16) 7

House Bill seeks to undermine consumer financial protection By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist In the aftermath of the successful effort to better protect consumer finances, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is now facing a forceful effort to undermine its mission and operation. Even before CFPB reaches its first anniversary of operation, proposed federal legislation that would exempt a variety of non-bank lenders has attracted 19 co-sponsors representing portions of Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. House Bill 1909, sponsored by California Rep. Joe Baca (R-Calif.), seeks to create a new federal charter for non-bank financial service providers that would bypass CFPB. It would also preempt state consumer protection laws and rollback consumer gains nationwide. Several states have already passed strong consumer protections against the
very same lenders this federal legislation would reverse. If enacted, non-bank lenders would no longer be subject to the federal Truth in Lending Act, which requires disclosure of the cost of credit as an annual percentage rate (APR). The beneficiaries of this legislation would be a wide range of businesses that offer reloadable prepaid debit cards, payday and car title loans, rent-to-own agreements, pawn shops, check cashing services and more. On the losing side would be 30 million consumers who either have no bank account – the unbanked – or those who use very limited bank services – the under-banked. Further, if enacted, a two-tiered financial system would be created and the almost certain exploitation of consumers using these products. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Black consumers represent more than 30 percent of under-banked households and more than 20 percent of unbanked. Black con-

Charlene Crowell sumers together with Hispanic, American Indian/Alas- kan and consumers represent 56 percent of all unbanked households. Businesses that provide goods or services at a competitive and fair price earn a loyal customer base; they offer consumers value for their hard-earned dollars. Yet many non-bank financial services included in HB 1909 have
never fit that description. Instead, their “repeat business” results from high fees that entrap customers into long-term debt. The irony is that these same “services” were marketed as shortterm transactions. Any financial product that leaves a consumer worse off financially than before can hardly be termed a service. Fortunately, a number of consumer advocates are actively working to oppose the renewed de-regulation efforts, including Americans for Financial Reform and U.S. PIRG. In announcing its opposition to HR 1909, the Washington, D.C.based Consumer Federation of America, was as clear as it was direct. “We oppose any steps intended to remove non-bank lenders from the oversight of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.” In a recent letter to Capitol Hill lawmakers the Center for Responsible Lending noted, “This shift exposes consumers and the financial services marketplace to

the very dangers that contributed to the economic crisis. The CFPB was created for the sole purpose of protecting consumers through oversight, rulemaking and enforcement of the rules for the very consumer financial products marketed and sold by the companies covered in this legislation.” It added, “Less than six months after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been fully operational with a director in place, H.R. 1909 or similar legislation would backtrack on Congress’ promise to consumers. These bills offer nothing new or beneficial for consumers – and removing consumer finance companies from CFPB oversight will set a precedent for many other companies to also seek to be excluded.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. High speed police chases are topic of discussion between teens and cops Teens from throughout Chicago met with police officers during CAP/YAR Can You Hear Me Now meeting
Since Pat’s life ended during a high speed police chase, that aspect of the story became a focus of many of the teens’ questions about police policy and procedures in that regard. Ironically, on the Saturday after the meeting a six-year-old girl from the Back of the Yards was injured during police chase after a shooting incident. Fortunately, that little girl is recovering.
The high speed police chase was one of the main topics of conversation during the recent “Can You Hear Me Now?” meeting between teens and law enforcement officers. The meeting was the third in a series of teen/law enforcement events sponsored by the Chicago Area Project/Youth. As Resources Youth Leadership Development Program. Teens, aged 13-21, from throughout Chicagoland and police personnel from Chicago, Markham and Country Club Hills packed
the room and actively participated in the dialogue designed to bridge the communication gap between law enforcement and young people. The meeting took place at the Chicago Area Project (CAP) office, 55 E. Jackson in Chicago. The police chase discussion was precipitated by a small circle exercise called “Pat’s Story.” The purpose of the exercise was to read the story and decide the individuals most responsible for the tragedy of Pat’s life. The groups were also asked to identify some specific caring behaviors that these persons could have taken to help Pat. The group responses were then shared with the entire meeting.

The police representatives stressed the fact that their departments had strict rules about police chases. They also emphasized, however, that these chases often occur in an effort to stop offenders from causing harm.
Representatives from law enforcement included Officer T. C. McCoy and Officer Jointer from the Chicago Police Department; Officer Brittney Jackson, James Walker and Detective DeShaun from the Markham Police Department; and Officer Ron Harris and 911 Dispatcher Aftan Brown from the Country Club Hills Police Department. The police officers also stressed the danger of their jobs and the fact that the police are usually following up on crime or suspicious activity reports. Aftan Brown, a 911 dispatcher from the Country Clubs Hills Police Department, pointed out that the police often Saturday, July 14, 2012
are required to stop and question youth because of specific descriptions provided during 911 calls. She also pointed out that police who stop and tell a group of youth to disperse are mostly responding to 911 calls. “Many times, those calls are coming from your neighbors and even your parents who want to get you off the street and back home,” she stated. The NEW Four-One-One By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor SUMMER FUN!: The DuSable Museum of African American History’s yearly celebration of summer continues with the 38th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and July 15, 2012, from Noon until 8:00 PM each day. The Festival, sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, will take place at the Museum, which is located at 740 East 56th Place (57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Chicago….and best of all, admission is FREE! During, this year’s Festival THREE very special events will take place. The DuSable will dedicate two Shona Sculptures which were gifted to the Museum by Sheila Handwerker. “Unconditional Love” by Lameck Bonjisi and “Elegant Beauty” by Luxon Karise. Also, TWO new exhibitions will open. “Places for the Spirit: Traditional African American Gardens,” and “Buried Treasures: Art in African American Museums.” “Places for the Spirit” is a stunning collection of over 80 documentary photographs of African American folk gardens—and their creators—in the Deep South including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. The collection of images will be shared through a joint exhibition with the Chicago Botanic Garden, and each venue will have a different set of photographs for guests to explore. These landscapes have a unique historical significance due to the design elements and spiritual meanings that have been traced to the yards and gardens of American slaves and further back to their prior African heritage. These deceptively casual or whimsical foliage arrangements are subtle and symbolic reminders of the divine in everyday life, the cycles of nature and the implied right and wrong ways to live. In the spirit of “outsider” art traditions, blues musical roots and other such folk manifestations, these gardens have a unique aesthetic and cultural significance. Over 20 years in the making, this is the first collection of fine art photography to document this subject and, as such, it adds greatly to our understanding and appreciation of the disappearing element of African American culture. Buried Treasures: Art in African American Museums will draw attention to the rich legacy of art produced by African Americans within the collections of thirty African American museums. The exhibition will display approximately 90 works of art including works on canvas and paper, sculpture and mixed media from many noted 19th and early 20th century American artists including Henry O. Tanner, William Edouard Scott, Augusta Savage, William H. Johnson, Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Catlett. The crowd-pleasing annual DuSable Museum Arts & Crafts Festival is a showcase for local, national and international artists of fine art and unique hand-crafted work. Originated in 1974, the Festival features artists working in traditional, ethnic and experimental fine arts and crafts related to African American themes, history and culture. The two-day event underscores the Museum’s mission of preserving the history and culture of the African American experience. During the 38th Annual DuSable Museum Arts & Crafts Festival, there will be live entertainment, educational seminars, book signings, films, affordable outdoor dining and family activities. Scheduled musical performers include: Saturday, July 14, 2012 2:00 PM - Muntu Dance Theatre 3:00 PM - Stick and Move Hip Hop Dance Company 5:00 PM - The Taylor Moore Band 7:00 PM - “Together” The Intruders Experience Sunday, July 15, 2012 2:00 PM - Groupe Daara Gee Dance Company 3:00 PM - Cyrus Hayes & Lady Lee Blues Band 5:00 PM - Tecora Rogers 7:00 PM - Three Soul Tenors featuring Stevie Robinson, Michael Scott and Devin Thompson Admission to the 38th Annual DuSable Museum Arts & Crafts Festival is FREE to the public. ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ
Beasts of the Southern Wild Beasts of the Southern Wild is a brilliant film, based around Hurricane Katrina in 2005 in New Orleans. It features a man named Wink, played by Dwight Henry, and his young daughter affectionately known as Hushpuppy, who is played by Quvenzhané Wallis, who are just living the life, even though their lives wouldn’t be anything that most people would want. They live in an area known as the Bathtub, a Delta community that seems at the edge of the world, but is close to New Orleans where the levees broke, and the father is teaching the daughter all he can about survival, since he knows he won’t be around forever. In an Oscar-worthy performance, Hushpuppy naively believes that many parts make up the universe and as long as all parts stay on course, everything will be alright. But Hushpuppy has already seen despair, as she has been told that her mother “swam” away. Left alone to raise his daughter, Wink is a stern father, but when he describes Hushpuppy’s “conception” and the way her mother was so beautiful that she “could just walk past the stove and the flames would light,” it’s so moving and warm. Hushpuppy has her own makeshift house of sorts to live in, separate from her father. But when she burns the place down, nearly with her in it, she has to live in her father’s dwelling, which is nothing more than a shack with mounds of trash and improvised furniture inside. But there are teddy bears and an old Michael Jordan jersey, with which Hushpuppy won’t part. It was ironic that Hushpuppy clung to that red, Black and white jersey. Jordan with all his wealth played a good part of this poor, inventive girl’s life. But you only realize you are poor when someone else makes note of it. Wink becomes ill, and it seems at this point all manner of weird things come into play. With the waters rising and destruction seeming imminent, Wink and Hushpuppy, along with other neighbors who are just as destitute as them, ride out the storm. But the “man,” in this case the FEMA relief workers, force them to leave the area and place them

The Bookworm Sez “Freeman” gle-minded, but she knew she couldn’t do it without Bonnie’s help. Bonnie was a toddler when, years before, the Captain had purchased her, immediately freed her, and raised her as his own. Prudence couldn’t remember life before Bonnie. They were sisters, even though one was milky-white and one was not. When the Yankees came through and burned what was left of James McFarland’s plantation, Marse Jim went a little crazy. Maybe it was because the Yankees killed his son, Tilda wasn’t sure. She hated Marse Jim, but she felt sorry for him, too. She knew what it was like to lose a child. She’d lost love, too…
By Leonard Pitts, Jr. c.2012, Agate Bolden $16.00 / $18.50 Canada 432 pages You’ll always remember the break-up. It started with a he-said, she-said moment forever burned in your mind. You remember where you stood, the words that were said (or not), the anger, and the queasy feeling that a mistake was about to be made but you didn’t know whose it was. Relationships come and go, but you never forget your first love and you never forget losing it, either. And yet, what if you were separated by something beyond your mutual control? Would it be easy to find that love together again? In the new novel “Freeman” by Leonard Pitts, Jr., one man aims to find out. He called himself Sam because that’s what she’d said he looked like he was. A “Sam,” and he told her she looked like a Tilda. So that’s what they called one another, even though Mistress had given them ridiculous Greek names when she brought them to her plantation. Sam had fallen in love with Tilda in that naming minute, and they were inseparable. Mistress let them live together. They had a child to-
Have you ever read a book so good that you forgot you were reading? Yes, that’s what it’s like reading “Freeman.” Author Leonard Pitts, Jr. serves up a novel that’s both ugly and beautiful, with characters that you’ll feel honored to know, though it’ll hurt. This novel throws you down in the aftermath of war and pushes your face into it – gently, and then rubs. That’s a conundrum, for sure, but it’s also one of the finest Civil War novels I’ve ever had. If you promised yourself one decent book this summer, then look no further because this is it. Read three pages of “Freeman” and you’ll know that this isn’t a story you’ll soon forget.

Prudence Cafferty Kent was only acting on the deathbed wishes of her father. With his last breath, he’d told her that he wanted her to go to Mississippi, where his plantation was, and build a school for Negro children soon as the war was over. Prudence was strong-willed and sin-

The group flees the shelter, right as they are being loaded onto buses for safer places. Wink really wants Hushpuppy to go to another town to find a better life, but she resists and resents that her father was “trying to get rid of her.” Beasts of the Southern Wild is a great movie; it’s great for people of all ages; it’s great to bring young people to see it—so they can learn to appreciate even the smallest things—even the leaf from a tree that Hushpuppy has no problem with putting up to her ear to see what she can hear (she believes that animals speak to her in code), before putting it in her mouth as nourishment.

What does the new Spider-Man bring that the old one didn’t have? Even though the story is the same, the characters are the same, the feel isn’t. It feels more, what is the word I’m looking for, REAL. The other Spider-Man series was great. I watched a comic book hero come to life. In this one, I watched a live character become a comic book hero. I am sure that even those of you who have never read a Spider Man comic book knows the story. Peter Parker’s father is a famed scientist who is working on cross genetic something or other. Feeling their lives and work is in danger; Peter’s parents leave him with his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt Mae (Sally Fields) for safe keeping. papers, does some investigating that leads him to his father’s partner Dr. Curt Connars (Rhys Ifans) at Oscorp laboratories, is bitten by a spider and develops sticky hands and feet, flies through the air on webs, and has enormous strength. Got all that? In the 2002, Sam Raimi SpiderMan, my focus was on SpiderMan. Okay, Bonnie, the movie is about Spider-Man, right? Yep, but in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, I got the whole picture. I saw the other characters that surround Spider-Man. I felt sorry for and kind of understood where Dr. Connars was coming from. I liked the relationship between Peter and Gwen, especially at the end. The relationship between Peter and Uncle Ben and Aunt May was wholesome and loving and felt real. I say SPEND THE MONEY and see The Amazing Spider-Man in the theaters. I don’t think you really have to spend the extra money for the 3D version. It was nice but I would have been just as satisfied with regular old 2D. 13

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Acclaimed musician Pierre Walker marries Louise M. The couple wanted their presence at their wedding. After the ceremony, Walker said, “I’m tired, worn out but happy. I married the woman that God ordained for me, for real.” Asked when did he meet his new bride, Walker said it was in 1999 at the Antioch Baptist Church. “That was her home church, and one of our friends introduced me to her and then she said ‘hi’ and went on about her business. Referring to the minister who married them at Saint Sabina Church where Walker is a member, he said the Rev. Herman Washington was one of his father’s sons in the ministry. halia Jackson and was a key musician at the Rev. Dr. Clay Evans’ Fellowship M.B. Church in Chicago. Walker’s wedding was symbolic of his past and his parents both of whom have passed as well as his wife’s mother. Rev. Washington represented his father and Rev. Evans, who gave the “Ancestral prayer” at Walker’s wedding, was symbolic of Walker’s “dad’s father in the ministry,” and to include the new chapter in his life, Walker said, “We got Father Pfleger who is our pastor now.” Walker’s father was a musician who began playing when he was 9-years-old and Walker, a recording artist, has played the piano/organ since he was 11. In honoring his late parents, Walker’s wedding showcased the legacies of two ministers who worked closely with his beloved father and the inclusion of Father Pfleger who is now the couples’ pastor. “It made sense,” said Walker. “There’s a lineage involved,” he said. Saint Sabina’s Minister of Youth, Cinque Cullar, who is a minister, educator, artist, producer, director and CEO, sang followed by praise dancer Olivia Jones who paved the way of the bride, Louise M. Kenerson, to walk down the aisle. As part of their ceremony, the couple included large pictures of their late parents, the Rev. Dr.
Charles and Sylvia Walker and his new bride’s mother, Future Mae Kenerson, erected by the altar. Out of deep love and respect, they held a moment of silence for them. Asked what was he thinking just before the Rev. Washington promised them man and wife, Walker said, “I was hoping that Vince (Clark, Pfleger’s special assistant) would turn on the song that we had planned, “I Got a Feeling” by Black Eye Peas.” Referring to Pfleger’s all-night service of 2011, Walker said he closed out that service with the song, “I Got a Feeling.” “We decided it was symbolic for me because I knew I was going to get engaged that year,” said Walker. “That’s the sticking point of the song. We decided to walk out on the song. It’s a happy song, and we’ve been happy.” Asked when did he get engaged to his bride, Walker said he proposed to his wife on July 1, 2011 in the choir. “I got down on one knee, and I asked her to marry me and she said yes, and then I said, and can you help me get up off this floor because my knees are killing me.” Pfleger gave the final blessing to Mr. and Mrs. Pierre and Louise Walker. The couple left the church in a white limousine.
Pastor steps in to help dead little girl’s family The Greater St. John Bible Church and its pastor the Rev. Ira Acree recently stepped up to help the grieving mother of a fiveyear-old girl killed in a hit-andrun incident over the July 4 holiday. Acree said Sophia Lucia, mother of Monet Robinson, was distraught that there was not more of an outcry over the little girl’s death. He added that the usual rewards for information and conviction, as well as help with burial expenses was not offered to Lucia. That led Acree to hold a special service this week to raise money so Monet could have a proper funeral. He added that during that service the congregation donated approximately $1,600 and others contacted by Acree contributed $2,400. In June Lattimore’s interview with Terkel was featured on WBEZ’s Race: Out Loud series. Among Lattimore’s best known quotes is this one: “Being Black in America is like being forced to wear ill-fitting shoes. Some people adjust to it.
