Heroes who defeated Chicago’s ban on handguns have their say By J. Coyden Palmer Standing on the steps of the Supreme Court last month after a ruling was announced that defeated the city’s 28-year
ban on handguns, South Side resident Otis McDonald smiled with pride. The 76year-old senior was relieved and had a lot of thoughts and emotions going through his head. He said he does not want to be remembered as some sort of a hero, even though he is the man who took on City Hall and won. “I was fed up with drug dealers and gangbangers messing with my home, my prop-
erty and eventually threatening my life, and somebody [Mayor Daley] saying that all we needed was to get guns out of the houses,” McDonald said. “I couldn’t take that anymore. I knew I had to look somewhere and find somebody to do something about this.” McDonald said three recent cases in Chicago show that responsible handgun ownership is a good thing. The killing of a
home invader by the elderly owner of the property on the West Side back in May helped turn public opinion in favor of handgun ownership. Just a week later a local business owner shot and killed a man who tried to rob his liquor store at gunpoint. Then there was the tragic murder of Chicago Police Officer Thomas Wortham IV by several men attempting to rob him (Continued on page 2)

NAACP Delegates unanimously pass Tea Party Amendment at Convention Nation’s Oldest and Largest Civil Rights Groups ask Tea Party to Repudiate Racist Factions KANSAS CITY, MO – Over 2,000 NAACP delegates unanimously passed a resolution—as amended—called “The
Tea Party Movement,” asking for the repudiation of racist Tea Party leaders. The resolution condemns the bigoted elements within the Tea Party and asks for them to be repudiated. The NAACP delegates presented this resolution for debate and passage after a year of vitriolic Tea Party demonstrations during which partici-
pants used racial slurs and images. In March, members of the Congressional Black Caucus were accosted by Tea Party demonstrators and called racial epithets. Civil rights icon John Lewis was spit on, while Congressman Emanuel Cleaver was called the “N” word and (Continued on page 2)

Judge rules: Blackstone Hotel illegally laid-off workers Hotel ordered to offer jobs back with back pay and benefits Union estimates lost earnings and benefits to total at least $250,000 In a major ruling this week, an administrative law judge of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) found that owners and management of the Blackstone Hotel had violated federal labor law by illegally firing workers, cutting staff benefits, and circulating a petition to decertify the union. The Blackstone Hotel was ordered to offer jobs back to 14 employees who were laid off on June 15, 2009 and compensate them with any lost wages and benefits resulting from the company’s unlawful actions against them, with interest. The decision represents an important victory for workers at the Blackstone Hotel, who have been battling the Hotel for more than a year to bring workers back to work and win a first contract. Among the other significant rulings in this case, the judge also ordered the company to restore its 2008-2009 health insurance plan and compensate Blackstone employees for unlawful increases to health plan costs. The Hotel was also ordered to stop refusing to bargain with the Union on health plan coverage and layoffs. Based on documents turned over by the Blackstone, the Union estimates that these lost earnings and increased benefit costs already total at least $250,000, and
this amount is growing every day. Community leaders have long criticized the owners and management of the Blackstone Hotel for their systematic efforts to dismantle the union, despite the hotel having received $72.9 million in taxpayer subsidies and credits ($40 million of which are tax credits meant to spur low income community development). As part of the ruling, the judge found that a Blackstone manager broke federal law by illegally encouraging and passing around a Union decertification petition. The judge’s decision reinforces an earlier decision issued by an NLRB Regional Director on March 27, 2009, finding that the Hotel illegally encouraged and assisted some employees in circulating the decertification petition. LaMar Johnson was one of the 14 workers laid off from the room service department. “I got married just 6 months before I was laid off from the Blackstone Hotel, and this last year has been a real struggle for me and my family. I haven’t even been able to buy a new pair of shoes. I’m gratified to know that the judge in this case sided with us and found that the hotel had broken the law. It feels like someone is actually looking out for the little guy.” Workers at the Blackstone began organizing shortly after the hotel reopened in the summer of 2008, and the Union became officially recognized in December 2008. Workers began bargaining
their first contract at the hotel shortly thereafter, and have been negotiating their first contract since. “At every step, the Blackstone Hotel has skirted the law, waging a vicious and illegal anti-union campaign in an attempt to decertify the union and impede the collective bargaining process,” said UNITE HERE Local 1 President Henry Tamarin. “Now the Hotel wants to skirt the judge’s
go. “The Chicago crime buffet is over,” she said defiantly. “Just like in the Wild West of the movies, there is a higher court other than the one that has run this city for the past 27 years. That higher court is the Constitution of the United States. And I am very grateful to the Supreme Court of the United States for interpreting it and bringing back our rights.” The man who argued the case for the plaintiffs, Attorney David Siagle said the victory for those who believe they have a right to protect their homes with a handgun has nothing to do with murders taking place on the streets of Chicago. He said what Mayor Daley and others do not want to try to understand is that the suit was not asking for people to be allowed to carry guns out on the street, only to keep a firearm inside their homes for protection. “The law-abiding citizens who

Wortham’s dad, a retired Chicago police sergeant, came to his son’s aid, shooting and killing one assailant while critically injuring another. McDonald said Daley and others who want a handgun ban can not argue in those instances whether or not the handgun for protection was appropriate. “This will make criminals think twice,” McDonald said. “If you have the right to have a handgun in your house, even if you don’t have a gun, that will give criminals a second thought, a third thought about breaking into your house.” His co-plaintiff Colleen Lawson agreed. are a part of this case and who support the court’s decision are not, and never have been a part of the crime problem in Chicago,” he said. McDonald said African Americans have been duped into believing that guns themselves are evil. He said as he brought this lawsuit, he learned about the “slave codes” and “black codes” that were enacted by Southern states during the Civil War. These laws prohibited Blacks from owning guns to their own detriment. Once slavery was outlawed, a new law was created that did not allow free African American citizens to own guns. “I was feeling that poor Blacks, who years ago had had their guns taken away from them and were killed as someone wished. That was a long time ago, but I feel their spirit,” McDonald said. “I could feel the spirit of those people running through me as I sat in the Supreme Court.”

OPINION
EDITORIAL THIRSTY FOR CASH For some reason, people don’t always learn from their mistakes. Although hindsight has 20/20 vision, as the saying goes, the vision can be clouded by emotion, greed, or whatever. Such is the case in Chicago, IL where Mayor Richard M. Daley is considering privatizing the city’s water supply. Surprisingly, he is on this track even after the parking meter debacle wherein he privatized city parking. The immediate result was a boost in parking fees where, in some parts of the city, citizens have to pay a quarter for 7 minutes of parking. Moreover, parking boxes are now almost everywhere, including in formerly free Chicago Park District parking lots. The Mayor’s thought processes are no doubt fogged up by the specter of dollars that he anticipates from this deal, although this experiment in other areas, including in Bolingbrook, a suburb of Chicago, has had negative consequences. In light of this, the Mayor’s plans come off as pennywise and pound foolish! To give what is arguably one of the most precious assets available to citizens and turn it into a commodity is a travesty! According to an online article hosted by CommonDreams.org, taken from the November 16 issue of the Chicago Tribune entitled “Privatizing Water System Could Be a Risky Move for Chicago,” Chicago would be the largest city in the U.S. to sell its water department to a private company. Bolingbrook and other suburbs and downstate communities are reeling from steep rate increases imposed by private water companies. And further away from home, Atlanta is still reeling from the consequences of its decision to sell its water supply. According to the aforementioned article, “Mayors from Homer Glen to Urbana are threatening municipal takeovers of their local water systems, moved by complaints about skyrocketing rates and lackluster service from corporate operators. Fort Wayne, IN already wrested away part of its water system and is seeking to buy back the rest after accusing a private operator of putting shareholder interests before those of customers. In Atlanta, after less than four years into a 20-year deal, the city regained public control in response to cost overruns, service problems and breakdowns.” In light of the many examples of potential problems with the possible privatization of Chicago’s water, the Mayor is still in the process of considering such a move. It is as though his brain has been replaced by a cash register that drowns out logical thinking. The citizens of the city of Chicago need to know that there is a real possibility of this happening, since, according to the article, Daley said “Everything is always on the table.” With this attitude, we can expect that he would actually sell the city’s soul if that were possible if he thought he could reap financial benefits. Chicago, like other cities around the country, is strapped for cash. The solution to this problem, however, is not to make our most precious natural resource a commodity, but to come up with more creative solutions, ones that don’t threaten the health and wellbeing of Chicago residents. Chicagoans, and residents in other cities around the country where there is a possibility of this type of privatization, should resist loudly any attempts to follow through with such a foolhardy, short-sighted plan. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Repower Or Replace? Your Choice Could Cost You Thousands Dear Editor: When serious engine trouble hits, the Engine Repower Council (ERC) recommends that vehicle owners ask themselves if they should repower or replace the vehicle. Many motorists don’t consider repowering and instead take on the financial burden of buying a new car. That choice can result in a cost difference of thousands of dollars. With repowering, the vehicle’s engine is disassembled, cleaned, machined and remanufactured to be as good as new. This is the best option, since repowered engines are dependable, reliable and backed by excellent warranty programs. Some may choose a used or junk yard engine. The risk here is that the used engine has an unknown performance and maintenance history, which means you may be asking for more problems. The Engine Repower Council has created a cost comparison chart of popular vehicles to illustrate the cost difference between repowering and purchasing a new vehicle. For example, to replace a worn out engine with a
remanufactured/rebuilt engine in a 1980 to 1995 full size V8 domestic pickup would cost $2,700 to $3,450 compared to an average cost of $30,000 to purchase a new vehicle. The cost savings is significant even without taking into account auto loan interest and increased insurance rates. To learn more about engine repowering and view the Engine Repower Council’s cost comparison chart, visit www.enginerepower.org and click on Cost Comparisons.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Post-Racial or Head in the Sand By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist The White male is very, very worried. His dominance in the world is no longer certain and there must be a way for him to devise a new system that can assure his economic and power advantage despite the rising populations of people of color, White women and the
Harry C. Alford demands for a fair share of that economy and power. Blacks are now the majority in Brazil. Forty percent of all newborns in Germany are of Turkish descent. White French are dropping in
population while Arabs and Blacks in that country have soaring populations. Gains in civil rights and political clout are starting to make a difference. Thus, a new kind of psychological tactic is now being weighed. They, the White power trust, are trying to convince us that racism no longer exists and that we should not be vigilant any longer. We should no longer count heads and search for disparate impact and correct demographic imbalances. Yes, we are now all one family and our new direction should be human rights not civil rights. Dr. King is dead and so should be our focus. Victory is won and things have been corrected. Oh, it is a post-racial future now. Go to sleep Black man and forget your drive for equality because you have it now and just don’t know it. Forget about unemployment that is triple that for Whites. Don’t worry about low education attainment and disproportionate criminal sentences and an enormous poverty level. It really isn’t there anymore. You have a Black president so it is all gone. It sounds so preposterous but
what is shocking is that many Black organizations and some activists are drinking this “cool aid.” Some civil rights organizations have even officially changed their names from “civil rights” to “human rights.” An alarming number are changing their missions to include advocacy for Whites, gays, lesbians, disabled and anything else you can think of. Strangely, this was the Reagan Administration’s tactic to tone down affirmative action. You include every group you can think of into the affirmative action pot thus lessening the concentration or action on true minorities. Many of our civil rights groups have now bought into this as it is the liberals singing the message so it must be the way to go. When you change your mission you lose your cause. Whites don’t need your help as they are in the driver’s seat as it is. Gays and lesbians have a strong lobby and advocacy and don’t need us. We, African-Americans, should not think that things are fine. There is still a lot of racism, prejudice and inequality out there. Don’t put your head in the “sand” like an Ostrich trying to block out the dan-
gers of the world. Stand tall and continue the fight. These organizations are rendering themselves worthless by walking away from the battles. Right now there is a backlash in this nation that is directed right at Black America and they are singing a song of togetherness and happiness. Why even one group is dropping their lawsuit against the subprime lenders who economically exploited millions of our homeowners. They have dropped the suits as if it never happened. This is absolutely shocking. Another indicator of this alarming trend is the current voting rights case before the U.S. Department of Justice. It is clear that the New Black Panther Party violated the civil rights of voters at a polling place during the last presidential election. It is on videotape and there are very credible witnesses. They have been found guilty in a court of law. Still, without any sound logic, our Justice Department is dropping the case as if it didn’t happen. This is just one matter at the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. They are denying the existence of
discrimination in many other cases. Imagine our first Black President and Black Attorney General and the Justice Department start denying that discrimination exists. It is more than ironic it is plain sick. It is also dangerous. We have an obligation to the generations that come after us and to our children that we presently care for. This world is not perfect yet and we cannot take the propaganda that some of our naïve brothers and sisters have swallowed. This nation is not post-racial. It is as racial now as it was in the 1980s. Better than the 1960s but that doesn’t mean that victory has been won. Our schools are failing us, police are abusing our sons, courts stack the deck against us and we are still last hired and first fired. Is it post-racial? Get real as the struggle continues. It is just that some have put their heads in the sand. Harry Alford is the President/CEO and co-founder of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. LeBron Made the Right Decision to be LeGone – to Miami By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist If there were any doubts about whether LeBron James should have migrated from the cold winters of Cleveland to sunny Miami, they were removed when Dan Gilbert, the Cavaliers’ majority owner, issued a scathing criticism of Cleveland’s “former hero” who demonstrated “cowardly betrayal” by deciding not to remain in Cleveland after becoming a free agent. Gilbert’s open letter to fans was actually an open attack on James, who gave the franchise seven years to assemble an adequate support crew around him. When they failed, he opted to sign with the Miami Heat, where he will be paired with two all-star teammates. James was wrong to make Gilbert learn of his decision by watching James’ reality TV announcement on ESPN instead of extending him the courtesy of a telephone call prior to the announcement. Still, that didn’t justify Gilbert’s attempt to humiliate his former star attraction. “As you know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier,” Gilbert wrote. “This was announced with a several-day, narThe Chicago Crusader
cissistic, self-promotional buildup culminating with a national TV special of his ‘decision’ unlike anything ever ‘witnessed’ in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.” He told the fans, “You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.” Speaking of cowards, Gilbert waited until his superstar jilted him to accuse King James of choking in four playoff games against the Boston Celtics. If James threw in the towel against the Celtics, as Gilbert suggests, then why is the owner so enraged that #23 is headed to Miami? Furthermore, if Gilbert harbored such thoughts about James, he is acting like a coward by waiting until LeBron James left the franchise before expressing those thoughts. Let’s get a few things straight. The NBA has tight restrictions on the mobility of players, stacking the deck – by allowing the home team to offer more money than competitors, if it wants to – and deciding a player can choose another team only after he has been cut or his contract expires. While under contract, teams can’t even approach other players about the possibility of joining them without facing league tampering charges. When James became eligible for
George E. Curry free agency, he had to weigh whether his best chance of winning an NBA championship rested with staying in Cleveland or moving to Miami to join fellow NBA All-Stars Dwayne Wade and newly-acquired Chris Bosh. There is no question that by signing James and Bosh and re-signing Wade, the youthful Miami Heat instantly becomes a favorite to win next season’s NBA championship and many more. Angry fans who burned James’ old Cleveland jersey in protest accused James of making a selfish decision. They forget that professional basketball is first and foremost a business. And as a shrewd businessman – and one of the
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
game’s greatest players – James agreed to leave millions on the table in an effort to win his first NBA championship. Cleveland fans need to get over it. I saw men on TV crying over losing James to Miami. Yes, crying. There’s something wrong with such an over emphasis on sports, especially if, as one of those interviewed said, “This is the worst thing that has ever happened to me in my life.” In a strange way, it was one of the best things to happen to Jesse Jackson. Jackson, who has been teetering on the fence of irrelevancy since vowing to remove certain body parts of Barack Obama, found a way to inject himself into the LeBron James saga. In a statement posted on the Rainbow PUSH Coalition website, Jackson said, “LeBron is not a child, nor is he bound to play on Gilbert’s plantation…” Referring to the Cleveland owner, Jackson said, “He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave.” Jayson Whitlock, an outspoken Black sports writer, challenged the notion of “NBA owners and their $100-million contracts are slave owners and King James is Kunta Saturday, July 17, 2010
Kinte escaping on the Underground Railroad to Miami...” He wrote, “Dan Gilbert’s rant was certainly immature, but it wasn’t remotely racist. He sounded like a scorned lover, a guy who gave his heart to a relationship and found out on national TV that the alleged love of his life didn’t care about him at all.” A scorned Dan Gilbert told Cleveland fans: “I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA Championship before the self-titled former ‘king’ wins one. You can take that to the bank.” If you take that promissory note to the bank, be prepared to be arrested for fraud. There is no way Cleveland will win an NBA title before LeBron & Company wins one in Miami. Cleveland couldn’t win a championship with LeBron and they have a lesser chance of winning a title without him. George E. Worrill’s World
Critical Commentary By Maurice A. Clayton
By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
REPARATIONS IS THE KEY ISSUE FACING AFRICAN PEOPLE IN THE 21ST CENTURY (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)) On Friday, July 16, 2010, Attorney Roger Wareham of the December 12th Movement from Brooklyn, New York, will speak at a Community Forum on the issue of Reparations at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), 700 East Oakwood Boulevard in Chicago, Illinois. Atty. Wareham is a long time activist and organizer in the Black Liberation Movement. We must regain the momentum which the Reparations Movement had in the first few years of this century. The United Nations World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa recognized the Trans-Atlantic Slave
Dr. Conrad Worrill Trade and Slavery as a Crime Against Humanity for which Reparations are due! The U. N. has declared 2011, the “Year for People of African Descent.” There are different activities being planned. As Malcolm X taught us, we must use the international arena to highlight our National Human Rights’ Demand for Reparations! Let us review the work of the December 12th Movement and NBUF leading up to the World Conference Against Racism. In 1999, the National Black United Front (NBUF) joined forces with the December 12th Movement in organizing a delegation of Africans in America to attend the United Nations World Conference Against Racism. The conference was held in Durban, South Africa from August 31 to September 7, 6
2001. We should never forget the impact and significance of this organizing project. The December 12th Movement International Secretariat, the International Association Against Torture, North South XXI has official Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status with the United Nations. Over the last twenty years, this group has committed much of its organizing efforts to participating in the United Nations Human Rights Commission by presenting numerous issues that impact African people in America. They have been NBUF’s eyes and ears at the U.N. As Atty. Roger Wareham of the December 12th Movement recently revealed in an article circulated on the internet, “Since 1997, when the U.N. agreed to hold this World Conference, the United States, Canada, and Western Europe (the WEO Group of countries) have done all they can to prevent it from succeeding.” In the spring of 1998, at the African Group meeting during the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, a Resolution was drafted identifying the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade as a Crime Against Humanity. The United States used all of its influence and blocked the resolution. However, this did not stop the momentum throughout the Afri can World to pursue this resolution becoming an official position of the United Nations World Conference Against Racism. At the African Regional Preparatory Conference, for the World Conference Against Racism, held in Dakar, Senegal (January 22-24, 2001), the African Ministers developed what has been called the “Dakar Declaration.” In their deliberations, they affirmed, in part, the following: Affirm that the slave trade is a unique tragedy in the history of humanity, particularly against Africans— a crime against humanity which is unparalleled, not only in its abhorrent barbaric feature, but also, in terms of its enormous magnitude, its institutionalized nature, its transnational dimension and especially its negation of the human nature of the victims. Further affirm that the consequences of this tragedy accentuated by those of colonialism and apartheid, have resulted in substantial and lasting economic, political, and cultural damage caused to the deSaturday, July 17, 2010
scendants of the victims, the perpetuation of the prejudice against Africans on the continent and people of African descent in the Diaspora. Strongly reaffirm that States which pursued racist policies or acts of racial discrimination, such as slavery, colonialism, and apartheid, should assume their full responsibilities and provide adequate reparations to those States, communities and individuals who were victims of such racist policies or acts, regardless of when or by whom they were committed. International law supports the position that the enslavement of Africans was a crime against humanity. The Charter of the Nuremberg Tribunal defined crimes against humanity in this manner: “Murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation, and other inhumane acts committed against any civilian population… whether or not in violation of the domestic law of the country where perpetuated.” The African Reparations Movement explains that, “Historians and their experts can show, without difficulty, how the invasion of African territories, the mass capture of Africans, the horrors of the middle passage, the chattelization of Africans in America, and the extermination of the language and culture of the transported Africans, constituted violations of all these international laws.” Thus, the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade was a Crime Against Humanity and, it is clear, African people are owed reparations throughout the world. Again, as Atty. Wareham explains, “Before the U.N. World Conferences are actually held, they are preceded by PrepCom (Preparatory Committee meetings) in the various geographical regions of the world where the actual content of the final document, the program of action was worked out, and the PreComs were completed. All of the regional PreComs are over. In Geneva, Switzerland, a working group meeting held March 6 –9, 2001 to consider a Draft Declaration (the Durban Declaration) and tried to resolve a dispute about whether compensatory relief (i.e. reparations) should even be considered as a theme of the World Conference. This was only an issue because of U. S. and Western European opposition.” The dispute was not settled and another meeting
Wild …Wild…West Recently our beloved Mayor realized that the U.S. Supreme Court made it clear that citizens had the right to bear arms. Immediately he went to the City Council and proposed a way to try to get around the prestigious body that upholds the laws of the nation for the citizenry. Power and the mindset created as a result of the binding document known as the Constitution. The Supreme Court is the standing body that will jump into gear to make it clear about what the august body represents with regard to those whom it protects under the laws of this nation. Last week this body made it clear that the handgun ordinance supported by the Mayor and City Council was one that violated the constitutional rights of Chicago’s citizens. It was made to be known that city government does not trump the Constitution and that no matter what, the citizens of Chicago have a legitimate right to bear arms and the city government cannot take it away. It has been a long time coming, 28 years to be more specific, for the law-abiding citizens who have suffered under the tyranny of the ordinance. This ordinance has contributed to law-abiding citizens being victimized by criminals who no matter what the law

So as those who we elect to represent U.S. choose to adopt ordinances that appear to be politically correct the reality of it all remains the same—this is not about the criminal it is about the free man protecting family, possessions and self and not being able to expect government to be every where all the time or even on time. I know that it will be a long time before the killings and torture of our children ceases. While we try to live in peace in (Continued on page 7)

How could an officer surrounded by several other officers feel threatened by a victim thus restrained? This leads to a very important question. Once a trial date was set, why was there a change in venue? According to the American justice system as I understand it, due process includes the composition of a jury that is supposed to reflect one’s peers. Was the
venue changed to circumvent finding a jury of the peers of the citizen who was dead as a result of being shot in the back? Was the decision to change the venue made only by the prosecution without input from the defense attorney? What was the rationale for changing the venue? The New York Times revealed, “A conference on racism this summer could be one of the most explosive meetings this organization (United Nations) has ever held, with moves afoot to cast globalization as a racial issue and to demand reparations for the slave trade and colonialism.” For more than twenty years, the December 12th Movement International Secretariat has fought in defense of the human rights of African people at the United Na-
tions, in both Switzerland and New York. During this time, they have come to help us understand that while we, as African people, may not recognize the importance of the international agency to the progress of our struggle, but the United States and its allies are crystal clear about it. NBUF agrees with the December 12th Movement that we must continue to organize at the international level in bringing the issues of African people before the world and especially the issue of Reparations.

LEBRON SLIPS THE SLAVE TRADE Congrats to Rev. Jesse Jackson who challenged the high and mighty NBA Owners for what they are. Now Ima and Rev. don’t always see eye-to-eye, but on this issue Ima agrees with him wholeheartedly. Ima confronted one of the NBA’s greatest slaveholders, Jerry Reinsdorf during Michael Jordan’s playing days and needless to say Ima got a little afraid for her life. Ima dared to challenge
New York. Ima didn’t go for it, but she couldn’t get no help to expose Reinsdorf for what he was a SLAVEHOLDER. Since we didn’t challenge him then we can attest to the fact that a leopard does not change his spots. A case in point is how the White Sox (also owned by Reinsdorf ) treated the ONE BLACK player they had in Jermaine Dye, whose contract expired at the end of last season. He has been sitting out the whole baseball season and guess how Reinsdorf has treated him? They have a wicked system that once a prejudiced owner doesn’t pick up a player, the whole damn league blackballs (no pun intended) the player. Dye said he would not reduce his price and why should he? He was one of the home run leaders at the White

Sox? Does that not stand for anything? It does if your hue is not Black. So hats off to Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. They beat the Slaveholders at their own game. And thanks for bringing Chet Walker out of the woodwork to speak truth to power on this situation. He has been blackballed from the Basketball Hall of Fame for his views of long ago. It don’t make it any less than the truth. I wanted LeBron to come to the Bulls but not at long as Reinsdorf owns them. Young people, including some young Blacks need to study their history ’cause there is no other name for what the Cleveland Cavaliers’ owner did than what Jesse said. He treated LeBron James like a Runaway Slave. Welcome to a taste of freedom LeBron? -Ima-
name being mentioned. How’s that? At some point the States Attorney has to face the criminal for him to confess, is that right? If I see your eye hanging out of your head, your face looking like the elephant man or you just can’t seem to stand and you are crying. I’m gonna think something IS not quite right. The Chief of police at that time stated that he reported these acts to the States Attorney, Mr. Duglly Do-Right Guv. Blago it is kept, the jails would be so crowded of folks selling jobs, favors and political seats if we but took a small amount of time to round them up. Starting from the highest political office in the land to dog catcher deals are still being made for various and sundry things. And check to see if any grants and monetary donations from the shit house to the White House and in between have cost folks before. Ima believes that the former Guv probably used some of those expletive deletives on somebody whose ego and pride was hurt and because the Guv is non-traditional in his behavior to say the least, they all ganged up on him and voila the trial is on. Now as to his cohort who wanted the Senate seat almost as bad as cotton candy at the carnival, Jesse Jr., he is the most despicable. He’s despicable because he has neglected his district the whole time he has been in Congress and to dare to want to be in the Senate (don’t make me laugh). He’s arrogant and selfcentered and most of all he’s a FBI SPY. I could forgive him for almost anything but being a spy for the agency with three letters, totally turns me off. -ImaPURE EVIL His name is JON BURGE. When the call first came Black folk should have taken to the streets like the immigrants’ did for reform. All these men regardless of their charges had a right to some form of due process. This city is so f—ked up. We all know of the Irish connection. DALEY, DEVINE AND SHEAHAN. These young boys had no one to protect their rights like they would lead you to believe in Law and Order. Here you have a mad man and his posse, sticking items up rectums and playing football with testicles. Talk about sick. What I don’t get is that only the victims and their lawyers seem concerned. The Big Mouth Jesse ain’t leading a march! This entire trial took place without the Daley

Jon Burge himself Richard Daley. He couldn’t see nothing but being the Mayor. These men endured more than prisoners of war did. Like McCain. Yet you Black folk kept putting him back in office like he was going to change and start liking Black folk. Most people refer to him as the Teflon Don. That’s close enough for me. Fitzgerald can show a change you can believe in if he goes after the mayor. Burge has got cancer, they say. I can’t say that I feel bad about that. This man is evil. I know back in the day they (white folk) thought that a Black man was lying if his stomach was moving if he was asked a question. I remember the hatred. If this was done to young boys what were they doing to the young ladies? I remember a friend of mine use to have white police officers go take reefer from dealers and bring it to her. They always saw Black females as being freaks. In their heads they always will. I thank Jesus and five other intelligent white men that this bastard was found guilty. I thank the judges who were then public defenders for standing up for the dead. We all know he didn’t do this for as long as he did without some help. Eric Holder, step up. Do what you are paid to do. At least act like it. Like you act like the U.S. Attorney. Release the hounds. SUPERMAN Is it just me? I watched as several police officers were lightly reprimanded or just walked on serious offenses. One beat a bartender for refusing his intoxicated ass another drink. trance to court by fellow officers. Some resigned because they were disciplined for this act, others were demoted. In the end it was a misdemeanor. His brother also has a history with violence. Their daddy who is a retired detective must have been owed a lot of favors. The officer that killed the two young men walked away without a charge. There’s no way in hell any person of color could have been involved in such a tragic accident and not be given a breath test for alcohol. He wasn’t even questioned. The officer who was drunk and pulled his weapon on the cab driver when he requested his fare. He then passed out and fellow officers passed him off to a supervisor who proceeded to cover this mess up. Do you know why this can happen? Why none of these officers fear discipline? Clout. Yeah they keep their in-house s—t to themselves. They threaten witnesses, they lie. They do all the things that you can’t do. When Superman was hired for that outrageous amount of money, I believe that it was to
Jody Weis spare the taxpayers from paying for the lawsuits that have bankrupted Chicago. I personally think he’s just one T-Cell from autism. The officer that was videoed at Provident beating an old man’s ass was turned over to the FEDS. Rank and file officers closed ranks on Weis. Then he moved commanders around. He screwed the pooch. There were many killings that summer. Chicago can screw up your Sundays but they can’t stop the shootings in, say, Englewood. These cops know who, what, when and where. Most of them are too busy tricking off with fellow officers or women in the street. (With the exception of the few that give a damn). Weis rides around burning gas, as well as expelling it. You got dumb and dumber controlling the officers who are supposed to protect and serve. If this shit wasn’t so real it would be funny. No one wants to believe the racial bull that still runs deep in the police department. Ask one on the low, they’ll talk. You didn’t hear this from me. 7

BUSINESS Even with Wall Street Reform, the Quest for Financial Fairness Continues By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer WASHINGTON - As Capitol Hill works to complete historic Wall Street reforms, most of the public debate has focused on mainstream lending such as bank practices, loans and credit
Charlene Crowell cards. Yet according to one of the nation’s Federal Reserve Banks, 30 million American households -- nearly one in four -- are either unbanked or under-banked. These families instead turn to alternative financial services for their monetary mainstays. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, unbanked or under-banked residents operate in a subculture that eschews traditional lenders and instead patronizes non-bank operations such as pre-paid cards, check-cashing and/or convenience stores and pawn shops. Many households with unpredictable cash flow and few savings were found to experience difficulty maintaining minimum balances or managing limits on availability of funds as many traditional lenders require. Additionally, overdraft fees, unexpected charges to accounts and account disputes together have led many households to adopt a combination of cash, money orders and prepaid debit cards for their personal financial transactions. Sadly, these recent 2010 findings mirror those of a December 2009 report from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Although Black and Hispanic households respectively account for 13.1 and 11.1 percent of all U.S. households, FDIC found that Latino and African-American communities together represent more than 60 percent of the nation’s unbanked households. Among the nation’s unbanked households, 36.9 percent are African-Americans. FDIC defines a household as “unbanked” if no one in the family has a checking or savings account. “Under-banked” households are those that have a The Chicago Crusader

orders, payday loans, rent-to-own agreements, or pawn shops at least once or twice a year. Each
year alternative financial services drain an estimated $11 billion from the pockets of moderate
and low-income households through a series of related fees. (Continued on page16)

Broadband Can Improve the Lives of African Americans Broadband promises to empower and strengthen low-income and minority Americans provided that more people in this demographic are able to adopt and use it effectively. Currently, only 46 percent of African Americans have adopted broadband at home, compared to 63 percent of all adults. Experts say increasing the adoption rate is critical since this technology has proven to positively impact the wellbeing of communities by promoting equitable access to educational, employment, and healthcare resources and providing enormous opportunities for the economic, which, in turn, benefits the entire U.S. economy.
Broadband facilitates ready access to health information and low-cost telemedicine resources. The wealth of information available on health websites such as WebMD (www.webmd.com) empowers African Americans to more carefully manage their health and make informed decisions regarding care. Telemedicine technologies – such as mobile health tools and remote monitoring - expand access to quality healthcare at lower costs. The educational opportunities enabled by broadband are also significant. Educational websites, for example, allow users to explore a wide variety of topics and to pursue afford-
able online degrees, while online degree programs allow non-traditional students to earn a degree with a flexible, customized schedule, which may suit students who must work full-time or have family responsibilities. Such opportunities provide an opportunity to level the playing field and enhance career successes. Overall, broadband promotes the economic empowerment of minorities by enabling participation in ecommerce and improving access to career opportunities. The convenience and cost-savings associated with online shopping are particularly valuable for low-income residents since many live in areas where basic
groceries are oftentimes more expensive than other areas. Job listings and career-building resources are also readily available to those individuals with a high-speed Internet connection. Websites such as CareerBuilder.com can link workers to jobs and provide employment-related advice and recommendations. The economic opportunities enabled by broadband are perhaps most important to African Americans, who with a 16.5% nationwide unemployment rate, could use the technology to provide users with a pathway to more opportunity and hope for life after the recession.

COMMUNITY Muntu Dance Theatre Gala to showcase “The Pearl Primus Project” As the summer heat begins to soar, Muntu Dance Theater readies to electrify audiences from across Chicago with the gala premiere of “Cultural Bridges … The Pearl Primus Project” – a celebration of the life and work of dance icon Dr. Pearl Primus. The concert and gala will be held Saturday, July 17, at the Harris Theater for Music & Dance in Millennium Park at 7 p.m.
“A Negro Speaks of Rivers.” Reconstruction of the original choreography is by Kim BaersBailey, assistant artistic director of Philadanco (Philadelphia Dance Co.). Muntu Dance Theatre is the first African dance company to receive and perform one of Dr. Primus’ works. Muntu has been awarded an American Masterpieces Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of this project.
World renown for the historical, social and political context of her works, Dr. Primus was a pioneering dancer, choreographer and teacher whose anthropological work exposed audiences to the realities of Black life in America and to the richness of African and Caribbean dance. A powerful performer and lecturer, Dr. Primus played a role similar to Katherine Dunham in establishing dance by and about Blacks as an important part of the American culture. The gala performance will feature signature work originally choreographed by Dr. Primus in 1944 and premiered by her company in 1945. It includes text from the Langston Hughes poem

WORLD OF MUSIC By Dr. Barbara Wright-Pryor A man, incognito, worth millions (A survey conducted by Washington Post writer Gene Weingarten) A young man sat at a Metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin on a cold January morning. He played six pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach for about forty-five minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people passed through the station, most of them on their way to work. Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule. A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work. The one who paid the most attention to the man playing the violin was a three-year-old boy. His mother tagged him along hurriedly, but the young lad stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the
Joshua Bell mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk away, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on. During the forty-five minutes that the unknown musician played, only six people stopped and stayed for a while. About
twenty others gave him money but continued to walk at their normal pace. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed. No one applauded nor was there any recognition. The violinist collected $32.17 contributed by 27 of 1,097 passersby. Only seven people stopped to listen, and just one
of them recognized the performer. The violinist was Joshua Bell, winner of the Avery Fisher Prize for outstanding achievement in classical music and one of the most famous musicians the world over. He played some of the most intricate pieces ever composed his 1713 Stradivarius violin for which he paid 3.5 million dollars. Two days before playing in the subway, Joshua Bell had performed a soldout concert in Boston’s Symphony Hall where the average ticket price was $100. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the Metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent
in an unexpected context? Weingarten’s 2007 survey was conducted in order to determine if people would distinguish between a world-class instrumental virtuoso and an ordinary street musician if the only difference between them was the setting. One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing? (Take time to enjoy the beauty in each day, for when the night comes, the beauty is hidden from view and the night is long. BWP)

In addition, he and the Orchestra also traveled to Carnegie Hall in New York City, giving two concerts each in May 2008 and May 2009. Haitink made his Ravinia Festival debut leading the Orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 in July 2008. In May 2007, Haitink helped to launch the Orchestra’s own record label, CSO Resound, with Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, recorded during his first concerts as principal conductor. Subsequent releases include Strauss’s “Ein Heldenleben” with Weber’s “Im Sommerwind;” Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 and 6; Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7; Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4, which won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance. Harvey church hosts Entrepreneurial Clinic for local teens The USA closed yet another festive Fourth of July holiday weekend recently with all of the razzamatazz, the smell of a great meal and the comfort of knowing the enjoyment of family and friends. And while the country celebrated independence and history The Grace Place Church of God in Harvey lead by Pastor Patrice Turner was preparing for an opportunity of a lifetime. In step with the celebration of independence in this motherland Pastor
Patrice prepares to give birth to her idea, Teen Entrepreneurial Clinic. Commencing Monday, July 19, 2010, young people from Harvey and surrounding communities will have the opportunity to participate in a four-day business clinic that will teach them the fundamentals of starting a business. The Grace Place Church and several local business owners have joined together to bring this needed event to the community. The goal of the Teen Entre-
preneurial is to enable teens to explore small business ownership and other selfemployment options. “Having two sons who graduated high school in recent years has made it clear that the current job market and economic situation make employment opportunities scarce,” said Pastor Patrice. “It’s difficult to hear so many young people lament the lack of jobs, so our church started looking for a way to enable them to empower themselves.”
Although /youth ages 1621 years of age can attend this four-day event at no cost, registration is required. “I’m looking forward to the clinic. I want to publish my own book of poetry and teach other people how to write and appreciate poetry,” stated 18-year-old Mario J. Gill. Several business owners have signed up as mentors to lead sessions, make presentations and answer questions. Planning, production, marketing, sales techniques,
team-building skills and financial statements are a few of the topics that will be discussed. “I speak around the country to our youth encouraging them to understand and know that there are different avenues they can seek to do something positive with their lives,” said owner of Group Design Associates, Ronald E Garner. “One thing for sure is this, young people don’t make up 100% of our population, but they do make up 100% of our future.”
The clinic will run on Monday, July 19, Wednesday, July 21, Monday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 28 from 10 A.M. until 3 P.M. Sessions will be held at the Harvey YMCA, 178 East 155th, in Harvey, Illinois. “This clinic will open teens to the possibility of business, personal and spiritual ownership,” remarked Pastor Patrice. Interested parties can register online at www.graceplacecog.net or via phone at (708) 589-1327.
July 21 Gala to raise funds for Youth Programs The turbulent and difficult economic times are hitting youths hard. According to official statistics released recently, 40 percent of Black youths are unemployed as against 23 percent of whites. Summer youth job programs by the city and the state have limited funding, and thousands of youths will not have jobs to earn money and stay away from crime. Even those who plan to attend summer school face cuts in vital programs including mentoring, tutoring and after-school programs. “There is an urgent need for the youths to have these programs because of one basic reason, the breakdown or demise of the family unit in various communities,” says Reverend Ernest Baker, President/CEO of the Access Hope Inc., a new organization that works to provide much-needed youth, adult and senior services. In order to obtain funds to support its youth programs, Access Hope will host its 1st Annual Gala for Education on Wednesday, July 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Ramada Hotel at 50th and Lakeshore Drive. The gala’s theme is, “Honoring AcadeThe Chicago Crusader
Reverend Ernest Baker mic Excellence and Remembering Our Fallen Youth.” Reverend Baker, who is also the senior pastor of the New Hope Christian Missionary Baptist Church, said five outstanding high school seniors will be honored with scholarships at the gala. “Outstanding youths must be honored. In various communities, many homes don’t have both parents present. There is the prevalent influence of drugs and violence, and this diverts the attention of the youth from what they should do to prepare for the future.” Access Hope, which began operations in January 2008, has 501(c)3 status granted by the Internal Revenue Service. Under the group’s men-
toring program, about 60 elementary and high school students from ages six to 18 years, are served. The program, started in January 2009, holds weekly sessions. In addition to mentoring, the group’s youth programs include tutoring, after-school programs and life skills workshop. The group recently organized trips to the Taste of Chicago, Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier and historical sites in Detroit, Michigan. “Our investment is an investment in souls whereas investors in the world make monetary gains. We are in the soul business,” declared Reverend Baker. Funding for the group’s services comes from private donations, although there are plans to apply for grants. Access Hope’s executive director Alexander Blumenberg coordinates the group’s activites to assist the youths to cope with the difficult economic times. Minister Nicholas Thompson, executive director of the Africa Resurrection and Restoration Ministries, also lends support to Access Hope as a member of its board of directors. He called
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
for strong public support for Access Hope because its success goes beyond services provided to the youth. An indication of this is that many educators, publically elected officials and community leaders have been invited to attend the gala that will showcase the group’s programs. Seniors are also benefitting from the group’s computer classes. The first four-week computer program started in November last year, and a second class began in February this year. Instruction is provided in basic computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Pic-

Even with Wall Street Reform . . . (Cont’d from page 9)
According to Jeff Gerritt, a Detroit Free Press columnist, the nation’s largest poor city – Detroit – nearly half of all Motor City households lack traditional bank accounts. “Convenience plays a part” wrote Gerritt, “especially for the nearly one-third of Detroit households that don’t have vehicles. In many neighborhoods, the corner party store is a lot closer and more accessible than a bank – and presents a lot fewer hassles.” Among public policy advocates, some would readily agree with Gerritt’s assessment. Recent written remarks to the FDIC from a wide range of organizations addressed many of the underlying issues surrounding unbanked and under-banked consumers and the inherent problems with building financial assets. For example, Heidi Goldberg with the National League of Cities advised, “Lack of access to the financial mainstream makes it difficult for families and communities to thrive. Individuals who are un- or under-banked must operate in a cash economy, which means the few assets they do have are vulnerable to loss from theft or natural disaster. Neighborhoods also suffer from the consequences of a cash economy, which can erode public safety and increase theft and related crimes.” Ms. Goldberg continued, “Perhaps most important-
ly, financially underserved families miss out on opportunities to build assets when they do not have access to affordable, mainstream banking products.” Addressing the urban dynamics that lead consumers to alternative financial services, Dory Rand, president of the Chicagobased Woodstock Institute in part wrote to FDIC, “Products such as money orders are important because many landlord and small business owners in LMI [Low-to-Moderate Income] areas do not accept checks. The ‘competitive market rates’ charged for these services should be less than the rates charged by non-bank providers in order to entice customers into mainstream banking. To avoid gouging customers, rates for cashing checks and wire transfers should be capped and not based solely on a percentage of the check or wire transfer/remittance amount.” So although the DoddFrank Wall Street Reform Act represents a major step forward for consumers, it is equally true that much yet remains to be accomplished before full, equal and competitive access to lending reaches all of America and its people. According to Mike Calhoun, president of the Center for Responsible Lending, “Auto dealers—whose lend ing record is rife with unfair, deceptive practices, especially for people of color and military personnel— should not have been ex-

SPORTS Chicago State University announces Tracy Dildy as Head Coach Chicago State University (CSU) Athletics Director Sudie Davis announces the hiring of Chicago native Tracy Dildy as the new head coach of the University’s men’s basketball team. Dildy becomes the 12th head coach in the program’s 35-year history and brings a wealth of experience at the NCAA Division I level as a top recruiter and respected assistant coach. “This is a bittersweet moment in my life to leave my Alma Mater, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where I developed my coaching career,” said Dildy. “It’s also a sweet moment to begin my head coaching career at CSU where President Watson is leading the charge towards a new and revitalized University. I’m also excited to work with Davis in helping shape the Athletics Department into a competitive program.” Dildy, a 20-year veteran in the collegiate game, comes to CSU after spending the past three seasons as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the men’s basketball program at UIC. Davis believes Dildy “brings a much-needed recruiting legacy to CSU.” Over the years, he has been responsible for the successful recruitment of future NBA players to his collegiate programs, including Eddy Curry, Quentin Richardson, Steven Hunter, Bobby Simmons, Paul McPherson, Bonzi Wells, and Sherrell Ford. “Tracy is not only a great coach,
Tracy Dildy but he is also very dedicated to the academic success of his student-athletes,” said Davis. “This commitment is one of the primary reasons why he was our top pick for the job. He has the ability to lead our players to victory both on and off the court.” Before arriving at UIC in 2007, Dildy helped sign a highly-touted recruiting class during his lone season at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) as an assistant coach under Mike Davis in 2006-07. He previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach
at two Southeastern Conference (SEC) schools – the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and Auburn University. At Ole Miss, he helped assemble a nationally-ranked recruiting class for the 2005-06 season that was rated as high as third by numerous recruiting publications and earned a spot on Rivals.com’s list of the Top 25 recruiters in the nation in June 2005. While at Auburn, Dildy helped the Tigers post a 22-12 record during the 2002-03 season and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the
2003 NCAA Tournament, where they fell to eventual national champion Syracuse University and Carmelo Anthony (currently plays for the Denver Nuggets) by one point. In addition, he recruited current NBA player Marquise Daniels, who recently played in the NBA Finals with the Boston Celtics. Dildy enjoyed success at DePaul from 1997-2002 where he worked as an assistant coach, the associate head coach, and served as the acting head coach in 2001. He helped the Blue Demons advance to the quarterfinals of the NIT in 2001 and reached the second round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Dildy spearheaded four successful recruiting classes for DePaul, which included the nation’s top-ranked class in 2001 and the second-best class in the country in 1999. During his three seasons as an assistant coach at Ball State from 1994-97, Dildy recruited future NBA player Bonzi Wells, a twotime Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and the MAC’s all-time leading scorer, and helped the Cardinals reach the NCAA Tournament in 1995. Dildy started his collegiate coaching career at UIC. As a student, Dildy played point guard and lettered for two seasons at UIC from 1987-89, finishing his collegiate career with the eighthmost assists (260) in the program’s history. Dildy earned a bachelor’s de-
gree in education from UIC in 1991. He was inducted into the UIC Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995, the State of Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Chicago Public League Hall of Fame in 1998. With a degree in education, Dildy’s obligation to students does not stop at sports. Davis states that Dildy shows a “very strong commitment to academia with his players and moving them forward to the next level whether it is the NBA or a professional career after college.” Dildy himself says that “one of the most important aspects of life is education.” He also went on to say that he will “provide a great experience for his student-athletes and encourage them to earn their degree.” “I am proud to join Chicago State University – a university that not only offers an excellent sports program, but also a strong academic curriculum that includes degree programs in a variety of fields such as pharmacy, nursing and education,” said Dildy. “I believe a quality education is critical for future success, so while I work to ensure our student athletes have a great experience on the court, I will encourage them to excel in the classroom, too. CSU has a lot to offer its students and athletes and I am excited to begin a new era in CSU men’s basketball history.”

No one died as a result of the Wal-Mart incident. One begins to wonder if Lady Justice has removed her blinders and is making arbitrary decisions based on reasons other than the merits of the case. It was always my belief that there was equal justice under the law; but, I must admit my faith and confidence in our judicial system is being stretched to the limit. The arbitrary and discretionary authority that police have and use in selected situations needs a very careful analysis and calls for that authority to be reformed to correspond to a given situation. We have gone on record as a nation that does not sanction or tolerate torture; and, yet there are too many instances of selective torture and cruel and unusual punishment. I have read that the Justice Department will investigate this case. It is my fervent prayer that they will remove any tinted shades and with clear vision examine all the facts and procedures that resulted in what I consider to be a gross miscarriage of justice. I raise the question, is what transpired in the case of the death of Oscar Grant considered American justice? Helen L. Burleson, Doctor of Public Administration 19
