School district set to rehire displaced teachers By Wendell Hutson More than 900 laid-off Chicago Public Schools tenured teachers, most who were Black, will now have a chance to get their old jobs back this fall. A tentative deal the city reached this week with the Chicago Teachers Union will make that possible, said Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union. “This is movement in the right direction, but this does not settle the outstanding and mandatory issues in the contract,” said Lewis. “It is too bad this solution—which was actually presented months ago—was rejected out of hand.” The nation’s third largest school district with more than 400,000 students and 675 schools is expected to hire about 750 new teachers to help with a longer school day this fall at elementary and high schools, but not at charter schools where teachers are not CTU members. Displaced tenured teachers will make up 477 of those new teaching positions, according to the CTU. The cost to hire additional teachers is es-

State Representative vacates office early Springfield will be missed. I have known Connie for 30 years so for me it is a personal loss because she was a close friend of my dad (the late Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer).” Speculation had centered on Howard’s health as a main reason for her abrupt exit. She is a breast cancer survivor and has sponsored breast cancer legislation since first being elected to the Illinois House in 1995. “Many people do not know but I am a breast cancer survivor. I had a breast removed because of it and never told anyone,” Howard told the Crusader in an earlier interview. “These are things that hurt the Black community greatly and I have always worked hard to address these things.” According to Howard, there are 105,000 residents living in her district, which stretches as far south as Lansing, and is 75 percent Black.

By Wendell Hutson After 16 years serving Chicago’s South Side and south suburbs Democratic state Representative Constance “Connie” Howard quietly resigned earlier this month. “On July 9 she (Constance Howard) resigned for personal reasons. Beyond that, I cannot tell you anything else because I do not know anything else,” said Barbara, Howard’s office manager, who declined to give her last name. Howard declined to discuss specifics about her departure although the Illinois Board of Elections did confirm she has left office. And Alderman Roderick Sawyer, whose sixth ward is part of Howard’s 34th District, also confirmed her resignation. “Yes, it is true. State Rep. Connie Howard has decided to leave a little sooner than expected,” Sawyer told the Crusader. “She has done a lot for her district and the Democratic Party and her presence in

Study identifies inner-city youth violence By Wendell Hutson A new study by the University of Chicago Crime Lab concluded that violent crime arrests declined among youth who participated in a pilot violence reduction program. Researchers now plan to study how the program could be implemented citywide to help reduce youth violence. Results of the study were announced at a recent news conference at William Harper High School on the South Side. According to William Harms, a spokesman for the University of Chicago, the study is unique not only because it was the largest of its kind ever conducted but because it was structured like a randomized clinical trial. The program, Becoming A Man (BAM), was in partnership with Chicago Public Schools and by Youth Guidance and World Sport Chicago, two non-profit organizations, to over 800 boys in grades seven to 10 at 18 public schools during the 2009-2010 school year. The schools were located mainly in low-income communities on the city’s south and west Sides whose residents are predominately Black. Those schools include Christian Fenger Academy High School, William Harper High School, Orr High School, and Paul Robeson High School. Compared with other students attending the same schools, participants were identified as at-risk for violence or dropping out of school based on their grade point average, attendance and other factors. Over one-third of the youth had been arrested at some point prior to the start of the program. The average participant had a D plus average (a

1.73 grade point average) and had missed more than six weeks of school in the year prior to the study. However, youth who participated in the program showed a 44 percent decrease in violent crime arrests during the intervention, according to the study. Participating youth also became more engaged with school, something that continued even after the program ended. Using data from CPS and the Illinois State Police, researchers tracked students’ school engagement, school performance and arrests between 2009 and 2011. Crime Lab researchers Sara Heller, Harold Pollack, Roseanna Ander, and Jens Ludwig compared outcomes among students invited to participate in BAM program with their control-group counterparts. The analysis revealed that BAM participants: • Reduced violent arrests by 8.1 arrests per 100 youth during the program year, a reduction of 44 percent. • Reduced arrests for crimes categorized as “other,” including vandalism, trespassing and weapons possession, by 11.5 arrests per 100 youth during the program year, or 36 percent. • Reduced the likelihood of attending a school inside a juvenile justice setting in the year after the program by 53 percent. Additionally, the BAM program proved to be cost-effective. “The program cost around $1,100 per participant, while its impacts on criminal behavior generated benefits to society that are valued on the order of $3,600 to $34,000 per participant, depending on how we measure the costs of crime,” explained Ludwig, who is

more Black teachers will lose their jobs as the school district continues to face budget constraints. The district faces a projected budget shortfall of $700 million next year. “Most of the tenured teachers laid off due to this process were Black,” Lewis said. But Marielle Sainvilus, a spokeswoman for CPS, said that is not true and most teachers were white. “Of all teachers who were subject to layoff last summer 42 percent were white and 36 percent were African American,” explained Sainvilus. “Of tenured teachers laid off last summer, 40.8 percent were white, 31.4 percent African American and 10.8 percent Hispanic. (Keep in mind that) over 65 percent of those teachers have been rehired since that time. (And) of those rehired, 40 percent were African American, 37.6 percent were white and 12.7 percent were Hispanic.” Since 2010, hundreds of tenured teachers, some with more than 20 years experience, had their careers interrupted. “For the first time in 26 years I have no students to buy school supplies for. My car trunk is empty and so is my life now that I no longer have kids to teach,” said Jacqueline Sanders, a tenured teacher displaced in 2010 when Bradwell Elementary became a

(Continued from page 1) Sawyer added that Elgie Simms, a Black lawyer and the Democratic nominee for the 34th District in the November election, would be named Howard’s temporary replacement in the next 30 days. “The Democratic Central Committeemen must now vote on a temporary replacement until the election and I plan to vote for Simms,” said Sawyer, who also serves as a Democratic Committeeman. “I’m confident he will be chosen and will go on to win the November election.” Secretary of State Jesse White is the state’s highest, Black elected official in Illinois and said he too is confident the district will remain represented by someone of color. “We want the best and brightest candidate to replace her and I am confident that a person will be

identified through the voting process. Her district is majority Black so it is fair to assume that it will remain represented by someone Black,” White said. And State Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-16th District) added that she fully expects the next representative for the 34th District to pick up where Howard left off. “Connie Howard has always fought for the (Black) community and I am sure the next state Rep. will continue her fight,” she said. Last month Howard handed out four scholarships to college students living in her district. This month Governor Pat Quinn abolished the Illinois General Assembly Scholarship, which Howard has bestowed upon several students annually. Over the years she worked on

the campaigns for President Barack Obama, former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and the late Mayor Harold Washington. The TV watching buff said she will not miss the weekly commutes from her South Side home in the Chatham community to Springfield but will miss the close, working relationship she developed with her constituents. One thing Howard said she feels strong about is legislation that assists ex-offenders with employment, housing, etc.

‘turnaround’ school due to poor academic performance. She had taught at Bradwell 21 of her 26 years as a teacher. With turnaround schools a new staff from the principal to security guards are brought in even although displaced teachers and employees can re-apply for their position. Sanders, who is Black, was not rehired when she reapplied for her position. And at age 52, retirement is not an option either. “CPS requires a teacher to be at least 55 years old or have taught for at least 34 years to receive 75 percent of their salary upon retiring,” explained Sanders. According to the CTU, as part of ongoing negotiations with the city for a new contract, the school district has agreed, that any tenured teacher displaced in 2010 or after can apply for an open position, and as long as at least three qualified applicants apply for a position the principal must hire a displaced teacher. However, any tenured teacher hired must have left the district with a satisfactory or better rating and if the teacher is retained after one semester, the interim position becomes permanent. The tentative deal also means elementary students will be in school for seven hours beginning this fall and 7.5 hours for high school students. The Chicago Crusader

Target opens new store in center of city By J. Coyden Palmer City officials joined downtown business leaders in hailing the grand opening of the new CityTarget store on the corner of State & Madison July 24. The new store is 124,000 square feet and is located in the historic Sullivan Center. The Chicago CityTarget is the first Target store located in a U.S. Historical Landmark. The store will employ approximately 300 people. The two-level retail store also features 32 windows on the second floor that will allow passengers riding on passing “EL” trains to see into the sales floor. Located at the geographical center of Chicago, Target executives and city leaders say the company’s bullseye emblem is the perfect mark to help designate the center of Chica-

Workers from other area Target stores were present to welcome members of the press to the company’s fifth store within city limits. “The mayor is delighted about this venture,” said Deputy Mayor Mark Angelson, who stood in for Rahm Emanuel. “It is important to the city that we keep businesses like Target flourishing while preserving the rich architectural culture Chicago has become known for. I think with this project we’ve been able to accomplish both of those goals. Other amenities at the State Street store include an expanded fresh food layout, a “City Love” section that will sell Chicago-themed merchandise for tourists and a liquor department that will sell beer, wine and other spirits. “It’s so important that we have

By J. Coyden Palmer After nearly two weeks of debates hotter than Chicago’s weather, officials in far South Suburban Sauk Village could be getting a reprieve as the state has offered to step in and assist with the village’s water problems. Earlier this month the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency said the village’s water supply contained a high level of vinyl chloride and prolonged exposure to the gas could cause cancer. Now the state has offered to install two air strippers that will serve as filters so residents can again drink tap water.

“There have been a lot of people on edge because even if they wanted to sell their house and move, with all the negative press about the water, you would never be able to sell and get value,” said a resident named Sherrie, who did not want her last name used. “I’m a single mother with two kids; I can’t just uproot and move. But at the same time I need to ensure by staying I’m not putting myself or my kids at risk.”

vetoed the measure. “Now is not the time to be raising anyone’s rates with as much as we are dealing with,” Towers said. “People are going to ask ‘why am I paying more money when we can’t even drink the water we have now?’” Sauk Village officials had been working with Baxter & Woodman Consulting Engineers for installation of the air strippers, but Gov. Quinn gave a directive to the EPA to get the air strippers installed right away. In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the IEPA instructed its engineering firm, AMEC to move forward with installing the air strippers immediately. AMEC is already on site at the water plant and has begun installations, according to the IEPA. “While the state will pay the initial costs of the strippers and Saturday, July 28, 2012

their installation, Sauk Village could be required to reimburse the state if the Illinois Attorney General’s Office pursues cost recovery,” read the statement from IEPA. “The village also remains responsible for installing permanent air strippers that will address the contamination problem for the long term.” In the meantime residents are expected to be drinking bottled water until the end of the month. The state also thanked companies that have donated to the village during these trying times. Coca-Cola, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health, has donated 1,000 cases of half-liter Dasani bottled water for Sauk Village residents, and IllinoisAmerican Water Co. is donating another 500 cases of bottled water. The IEPA continues to sample both the well water and the finished water on a regular basis. 3

EDITORIAL THE LAW OF VIOLENCE SEEN IN THE COLORADO SHOOTINGS Well, it has happened again. A lone gunman in Aurora, Colorado, opened fire in a crowded movie theater killing twelve people and injuring 58 others. The movie, “The Dark Knight Rises,” is the newest Batman offering, and is very dark and very, very violent. The shooter has been identified as 24-yearold James Holmes, a Ph.D. dropout. At press time, no motive has been offered for the shootings. Holmes, dressed in ballistic gear and armed with three guns and an assault rifle, set off gas canisters in the theater and commenced to randomly shooting into the sold-out crowd. Some individuals thought that this act was a movie promotion stunt until people looked around and saw that people were actually being shot with real bullets. A lot of people are now calling more loudly for gun control in light of this recent tragedy. The sad fact is that guns are not the culprits – people with deranged minds are. Moreover, our society was created in violence, and has sustained violence through the years in various and sundry ways including recent skirmishes in Afghanistan and Iraq, and saber-rattling with Iran among many other situations. Wars have been ongoing. We have been taught that violence is the best way to solve problems. We see this every day; from police brutality that targets many minorities to our attitude toward nations that harbor weapons of mass destruction that we feel they should not possess, (even though we have them). Have we forgotten that this land was taken by force from Native Americans who were slaughtered in the process, or have we forgotten that most Blacks were brought to these shores in chains, with millions losing their lives in the process? There is a fundamental law of nature in operation in the world that will guarantee that we will continue to have violent episodes like the one in Colorado. That law is the means shapes the results. In other words, if violence is used toward an end, no matter how noble that end is seen to be, it is IMPOSSIBLE for the end to be anything other than violent! We have not learned this lesson, and quite frankly, we don’t seem to be any closer to an understanding of it. If you don’t believe this, just look around at the world. Everywhere that violence has played a role, the impacted society has not been able to escape violence. This is why we constantly see revolution after revolution without things getting better. What we need, in fact, is EVOLUTION. We need to evolve as a species to an understanding that violence will never solve problems. We live in a sick society and James Holmes is a reflection of that sickness. Regarding this last point, many African Americans are looking at the situation in Colorado and are expressing the opinion that James Holmes would be considered a “terrorist” if he had a Muslim-sounding name or a “gangster thug” if he were Black, but because he is white, people will just chalk it up to “mental illness,” or something else perceived more benign than terrorist or thug. This may be true…and judging from how Holmes showed up for his first court appearance sporting unkempt dyed red/orange hair and displaying dazed facial expressions he just might be playing the mental health card. The truth, though, is that anyone who commits a crime like this IS mentally ill, but that does not exonerate him. He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. In the meanwhile, The Crusader offers sincere condolences to the families impacted by this terrible crime.

Can you remember when Black preachers were not talking about stopping the shootings? I know, it’s been awhile. But the point is these preachers have been talking and talking and every once in awhile one or two of them will call all the television stations and tell them to bring the cameras because there is going to be 1,000 community people with them to protest the violence in Chicago. Well usually the television stations get to the appointed place at the appointed time but about 980 of the promised marchers are a no show. That was the case before last week when Min. Louis Farrakhan pledged to take to the streets with 300 followers to talk to young brothers about stemming the violence. Not only did Farrakhan deliver the promised 300 bodies, but 200 beyond that. People wanted to be with Farrakhan. It was not all Nation of Islam members joining him on the march. I don’t care whether you like his religion, politics or anything about him, he seems to be the ONLY Black man in this country who can issue a call and Black folk show up. They show up eager to follow the lead and help Farrakhan with what he sees as

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Leading by example Dear Editor:

the issue, and resolve it. And now despite all the chestthumping, microphone-grabbing, talk-show-appearing by Black preachers; none of them have been able to enlist the kind of backing Farrakhan has. Chicago’s youth are facing a state of emergency. City hall is giving lip service; the governor and the state officials are giving lip service. I already told you what the Black preachers are not doing. The only one who is doing more than drawing on a chalkboard is the leader of the Nation of Islam. And as Farrakhan’s success in dealing with this violence issue increases, we can be sure that detractors, mostly white but a few who call themselves Black also will be trying to take away from what is being done. Black people cannot afford to take our eye off this prize of stemming violence. But we KNOW there is already a script written that will have someone talking about Farrakhan’s previous statements on the Jewish Faith, or his alliance with the late Muammar Gaddafi or something else that is irrelevant. Things that have not one thing to do with saving our children. And the Black preachers who just had yet another meeting to announce something else we all have forgotten about in three weeks, need to rally behind Farrakhan. These preachers should stand in their respective pulpits and encourage their members to join the move Farrakhan is mak-

ing. Before the Black preachers have one more meeting on the violence problem, they need to reach out to the minister and collectively sit with him and get his advice on how they should proceed, and be prepared to follow him in the streets if that is what he calls for. Because what y’all been doing obviously isn’t working. Mark Lane

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Obama is ‘Fiddling’ His Way to Failure By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist The American Dream is starting to fade away and that is very scary. The saddest thing about this is the recent behavior or attitude of President Barack Obama. He has abandoned leading us and has gone on full campaign mode with more than four months to go before the national election. He seems to be delirious in his character attacks against candidate Mitt Romney. It is like Nero sitting down with his fiddle while Rome was burning away. Is Obama our Nero? Let’s take a look. God has blessed our country with natural energy resources such as oil, natural gas and coal. Maybe that’s why he is mad about it – God has blessed us. He is attacking the life blood of our energy needs. He wants us to stop using these products but has no clear solution or even a hint about how we can do without them. Our tariff free trading partner Canada has immense reserves of oil and would love to ship vast amounts via the Keystone Pipeline. Everyone but environmental extremists is cheering for this to happen. What’s the big problem? Our president is one of those en-

Harry C. Alford vironmental extremists. He wants to decrease oil quantities regardless of the negative effect it has on our economy (prices, jobs, business growth, etc.). Let us suffer; he has a “fiddle” to play. The process of fracturing, a/k/a fracking, has opened vast new reserves of natural gas for our nation. We now have more natural gas than any other nation on earth. That makes most of us

happy but it depresses our president. He has his Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) trying to find ways to slow down the process and, at times, to shut it down. We need more natural gas in a desperate way but he would rather play that “fiddle.” Then there is our abundant quantity of coal. This is the cheapest form of energy and many of our utility companies rely on it. The harvesting of coal is a serious job creator in states such as Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Illinois. Our president doesn’t want to slow this down; he wants to kill it! His henchman, the EPA, has issued the Utility MACT Rule, which requires new mercury air standards that most utility plants cannot possibly meet. The result will be about 32 utility facilities shutting down. That is a tremendous amount of jobs (in this recession) and utility prices will skyrocket as supplies dwindle. Play that Fiddle! Remember when our beloved President John F. Kennedy said we will put a man on the moon and lead the world in space exploration? Well, the guy we have now just closed down NASA (JFK is rolling in his grave). Our

nation is now #3 in space behind Russia and China. If we want to go into space we have to buy a seat from them. Many thousands of engineers are still unemployed as a result of this capitulation. Stop fiddling! “America, the strongest nation on earth” – that saying is becoming passé. Our president has the crazy idea of slashing our military all the way back to 1940 levels. Hmmm, isn’t that the year Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan considered us punks and later attacked? It is quite clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin considers Barack Obama a punk. He has a look of disgust when they are together. No one respects weakness, especially when it comes with a fiddle. No family or business can run properly without a budget. Our president is trying to manage and lead a nation without a clear budget. That’s why in his short tenure he has increased our debt by more than $4 trillion dollars (that’s a T). I can’t recall any other president in our history running our nation without a budget. It is lunacy or it’s like playing a fiddle while Rome burns. We are on the verge of financial ruin and there is no plan from the White House.

Former President Lyndon Baines Johnson vowed to make war on poverty. He started the food stamp program with a budget of $268 million in 1964. Our president doesn’t fight poverty; he promotes it. Last year, we spent more than $78 billion in food stamps. We are becoming a nation of paupers and he is playing the fiddle. Finally, there is the low regard for the Black Church. How do you jump into the moral discussion of same sex marriage? That debate belongs to our church, not the White House. This is an affront to our beloved long standing institution – just for a few votes. Mr. President, I am calling you out. Stop the ugliness and tend to the crisis at hand. Raising taxes in a recession and killing jobs via all of the above is a blue print for disaster.Your record with Black procurement is now at 1.1 percent (GAO). Nixon did better than you! Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

The End of AIDS By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist There was a refrain that was heard in almost every speech this week at the International AIDS Conference in Washington: We are on the verge of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. That wasn’t a statement that could be made 30 years ago when the pandemic was first identified. It wasn’t a statement that would be uttered at the last International AIDS Conference I attended two years ago in Vienna. But in the nation’s capital this week, that was all the buzz. At the opening session Sunday night, Michael Sidibe, executive director of UNAIDS, said: “Now I want you to close your eyes. Listen to my words. We can end AIDS…Wear a condom, end AIDS. Give money, end AIDS.” Monday morning’s opening plenary provided more of the same. The first speaker was Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. “We are on scientifically solid ground when we say we can end the HIV/AIDS pandemic,” he The Chicago Crusader

George E. Curry told the audience of scientists, researchers and policymakers from around the world.” He added this caveat: “The end of AIDS will not be accomplished, however, without a major global commitment to make it happen. We have a historic opportunity –with science on our side – to make the achievement of an AIDS-free generation a reality.” Phil Wilson, president and CEO of the Black AIDS Institute, made the same point when he followed Fauci. “Welcome to the first International AIDS Conference where we know that we can end AIDS,” he said. “Thirty-one years after the disease was discovered, right here in this country, we finally have the right combination of tools and knowledge to stop the epidemic. No, we don’t have a cure or a vaccine yet.

“But David only had a slingshot, and he felled Goliath. Our tools are far from perfect, but they are good enough to get the job done – if, and this is a big if, we use them efficiently, effectively, expeditiously, and compassionately.” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking next, said: “I want to salute all the people who are here today who do the hard work that has given us the chance to stand here in 2012 and actually imagine a time when we will no longer be afflicted by this terrible epidemic and the great cost and suffering it has imposed for far too long.” The fact that scientists and policymakers are speaking of the end of AIDS, even in guarded terms, represents a major breakthrough. An International AIDS Conference fact sheet, puts the disease in perspective: “HIV/AIDS is one of the most destructive diseases humankind has ever faced and with profound social, economic and public health consequences, and has become one of the world’s most serious health and development challenges. HIV is a leading cause of death worldwide. The first cases were reported in 1981 and since the beginning of the pandemic more than 30 years ago, nearly 30 million people have died of AIDS-related

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

illnesses. There is an estimated 34 million people living with HIV.” When researchers speak of “ending” HIV, that does not mean the disease will disappear. “Ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic is an enormous and multifaceted challenge, but we now know it can be done,” Dr. Fauci said Monday. “It will require continued basic and clinical research, and the development and testing of additional treatment and HIV prevention interventions and, importantly, implementing these interventions on a much wider scale.” In a fact sheet distributed with Secretary Clinton’ speech, success was defined this way: “An AIDSfree generation entails that first, no one will be born with the virus; second, that as people get older, they will be at far lower risk of becoming infected than they are today; and third, that if they do acquire HIV, they will get treatment that keeps them healthy and prevents them from transmitting the virus to others.” Until the development of a vaccine or cure, success will be defined by reaching people around the globe and applying some of the successful approaches already working in many parts of the world, including widespread testing, reducing Saturday, July 28, 2012

mother-to-child transmission and expanding treatment options. In the early days in the disease, AIDS was seen as a death sentence. Rae Lewis-Thornton, an AIDS activist, found out she was HIVpositive in 1983. In a forthcoming interview with Heart & Soul magazine, she said: “When I made that transition to AIDS seven years later was when it all hit me like a ton of bricks,” Lewis-Thornton said “Then it became the expectation of death. The average time span from AIDS to death was three years.” But thanks to advancements in antiretroviral medications and greater emphasis on testing, prevention and treatment, AIDS is no longer a death sentence it was three decades ago. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

REVISITING BLACK NATIONALIST HISTORY (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill One of the biggest challenges African people face in America is to rejuvenate Black Nationalist thinking as we struggle to determine for ourselves as a people what is in our best collective interests. There are far too many African people in this country who think what is good for other people should be good for us. Nothing

could be further from the truth. We can only determine what is good for us by reestablishing Black Nationalist thinking and developing a Black Nationalist program of action. This is the missing link to the liberation of African people in America. Let us briefly review the development and impact of Black Nationalism in America. Black Nationalism is a tradition that emerged in the early nineteenth-century among those Black leaders who understood the need for African people in America to develop a national entity as the only solution for Black people in North America, Latin America, or the Caribbean. These nineteenth-century Black Nationalist leaders such as Denmark Vessey, Nat Turner, David Walker, Henry Highland Garnet, James T. Holly, Martin R. Delany, Pap Singleton, Edwin McCabe, and Henry McNeal Turner understood that African people in America were a “nation within a nation” and should organize to collectively struggle for the liberation of Black people in this country and throughout the world. During this era there were some Black Nationalist leaders before, and after the Civil War, who led movements for people of African ancestry to leave this country and establish a homeland somewhere else. These proposals included

Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean. Other Black Nationalist leaders led movements for Black people to control the towns where they lived and others who led movements to the western region of this country to establish all Black towns in Kansas and Oklahoma. The core of this Black Nationalist tradition has been to defeat and overthrow the system of white supremacy, seize control of land (somewhere) and to achieve self determination for the oppressed Black masses. The Black Nationalist tradition has always been opposed to integrations, assimilation, and accommodation as a solution to the problems of people of African ancestry in America. In this regard, Black Nationalist tradition has rejected the strategy and tactics of appealing to the morality of white people and their white supremacy system. Black Nationalists have been historically clear that people in power don’t teach powerless people how to get power. And they certainly don’t give power away, even though, when challenged, they may give up some concessions. As Black Nationalism emerged in the twentieth-century, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the establishment of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and the African Communicates League (ACL) became the

leading spokesman for Black Nationalist ideas and organizing. Garvey used his varied skills to become one of our true twentiethcentury freedom fighters. Garvey arrived in Harlem, New York on March 16, 1916. By 1919, Garvey was well established as the President General of the UNIA/ACL that had membership of over three million people with more than three hundred branches in the United States. Perhaps Garvey’s greatest contribution to the upliftment of our people, through Black Nationalism, was his ability to find a formula for organizing African people around the African principle: the greatest good for the greatest number. This was reflected in the First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World, in Madison Square Garden, in 1920. Over twenty thousand Black people from all over the world witnessed the choosing of Red, Black, and Green as the colors of the Provisional Government. In this context, Garvey and the UNIA/ACL had established an economic arm, the Negro Factories Corporation, with cooperative stores, restaurants, steam laundry ships, tailor shops, dressmaking shops, millinery stores, a doll factory to manufacture Black dolls and a publishing house. Also, Garvey formed a Steamship Corporation.

The Black Nationalist tradition was continued in the twentiethcentury through the Nation of Islam and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who utilized many of the Garvey and UNIA/ACL organizing tactics and strategies. It was during the 1960s Black Power explosion that the Black Nationalist tradition reemerged through the influence of Malcolm X who adopted Black Nationalism as the political philosophy, economic and social philosophy of the organization of Afro American Unity in 1964 after he left the Nation of Islam. Finally, the Black Nationalist tradition, today, is spearheaded through the African Centered Education Movement. The mass acceptance of Kwanzaa, African Liberation Day, Buy Black Campaigns, the Reparations Movement, and Controlling Our Own Communities Campaigns are all part of the ongoing Black Nationalist tradition. Without vigorous Black Nationalist thinking and an aggressive Black Nationalist program of action, we will continue to chase false dreams created by our oppressors. We must put an end to this! Once Black Nationalism is understood by all Black people, it will be the foundation upon which the true liberation of people of African ancestry in America will take place.

“GOD’S PLAN” TO KILL? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist

been allowed to leave jail without being charged? George Zimmerman says this case has divided our nation, and he is, perhaps right. How else could an admitted killer garner more than $150,000 via the Internet unless some rabid souls choose to support the wanton massacre of young African American men? At the same time, this admitted killer has had hubris enough to provoke the New Black Panther Party to make him the target of incendiary rhetoric. But the New Black Panther Party, a small organization that is more bark than bite, may have offered a death threat. Zimmerman, who was told not to follow Trayvon Martin, actually committed one, and were it not for the national attention this case has garnered, might have never been charged with the evil he committed. I had the opportunity to meet Sybrina Hudson, Trayvon Martin’s mother, and attorney Benjamin Crump at the most recent Rainbow/PUSH annual conference.

George Zimmerman, the Florida man who killed Trayvon Martin, told Fox News personality Sean Hannity that the events that occurred on February 26, 2012 were “God’s will.” What a cynical manipulation of our Creator, to suggest that the massacre of an African American teenager by a crazed vigilante is the will of God. Actually, if one wants to know about God’s will, one might simply go to the Ten Commandments, the sixth of which is quite explicit. Thou shall not kill. George Zimmerman has proven himself to be a multiple liar. He called himself destitute while collecting tens of thousands of dollars from a website that was formed to fund his defense. A judge put him back in jail for that lie. He declined medical attention the night he killed Trayvon, and then showed up the next day with bumps on his head, but no evidence of who put them there. This is

Trayvon’s death is God’s will. Trayvon Martin’s death is not God’s will but Zimmerman’s, and

the will of those legislative vigilan-tes who have passed “Stand Your Ground” laws in many states. Trayvon’s death is the will of those who have peddled these vigilante laws all over the nation. Just as Zimmerman has manipulated God’s word, he has also manipulated the truth, and he ought to be ashamed. Note that “Stand Your Ground” laws are different from the “Castle Laws” that allows residents to use force against those who unlawfully enter their property. These laws have their own downside – witness the case of a man who shot Halloween trick-or-treaters. But these laws allow folks to shoot people (as opposed to formerly held laws where one was required to retreat) if they are in a place where a defendant is allowed to be. Using such laws, had Trayvon had a weapon he might have justifiably used it on Zimmerman, since he had the same right to be on the streets as Zimmerman. But does anyone have any doubt that if the shoe were on the other foot, Trayvon would have

She has started a website www.justicetm.- org, that will promote justice for Trayvon and the many other young Black men whose lives are placed in jeopardy by “stand your ground” laws. She is to be commended for turning her pain into passion and power. The rest of us who love young hoodie-wearing Black men who have every right to walk through streets, to stop at stores to buy iced tea and Skittles, to hang out at bus stops, as other teens do, to play basketball on courts at night, now must tell them the racist rules of the game. Ima is so sorry ‘bout them folks out in Aurora, Colorado that got killed and injured at the theatre where Batman was being showed at midnight last week. There sho ‘nuff was something wrong with that young man. It makes you think it could have been anywhere ‘cause dey be closing down the mental institutions and outpatient clinics under the guise of money crunches here and all over the country. He kinda tried to qualify his remarks by saying he loved the president, as if this is going to mean a damn thing to them. “I love you, President Obama, but you are the president. I will not let you ignore the violence in Chicago.” He also talked about the rukus that was raised about 300 elephants that were killed last year in Cameroon, yet the lives of 300 young people don’t seem to matter.

-ImaIMA’S MAILBAG Daley’s Chuck Bowen Dear Ima: Greg Hinz at Crain’s Chicago Business had previously outed Chuck Bowen for double dipping his pension with a paid appointment to a state Port Board as well as a contract from the city (that the city will not provide information to the Inspector General for). Well, his wife recently passed away and there was a memorial service for her and one of the speakers may have inadvertently let the cat out of the bag that this “Public Servant” actually lived like a king, from the note that was sent to me. . . —- “Just getting in from Chuck Bowen’s Wife’s memorial... his buddy Daley showed up and every other mega phony on Chicago turf. Why they allowed her to speak I don’t know, but the Creator has strange ways of using nut cases. What she said in great detail had nothing to do with her but was deeply revealing about the price Bowen sold out this entire city for. She described: the incredible spacious mansion that they own in Bronzeville, the art (that she detailed has come

from every corner of the world and told us the countries); the crystal; the china; the old silver; antique furniture. She said, “the wealth, the riches, the abundance” of the Bowen household was beyond measure. My mouth was open. Chuck never looked up. BUSINESS Wells Fargo Makes $175 Million Discrimination Settlement By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist For the second consecutive month, one of the nation’s largest banks has agreed to a multi-million dollar settlement of mortgage discrimination complaints. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Wells Fargo Bank will pay more than $175 million to resolve unfair lending claims against African-American and Latino mortgage borrowers from 2004 through 2009. It is the second-largest fair lending settlement in the department’s history. According to DOJ, $125 million will go to borrowers of color who were charged more for loans they got through mortgage brokers. Four thousand borrowers will be compensated for being steered into subprime loans with higher rates and fees instead of receiving prime loans for which they were qualified. An additional 30,000 borrowers will be compensated for higher costs they paid on their broker-originated loans. The Justice Department is now investigating similar complaints from consumers whose “retail” mortgages were originated by Wells Fargo loan officers during the affected

years. The remaining $50 million from the settlement will be used for down payment assistance in hardhit communities across the country where DOJ identified large numbers of discrimination victims. These markets include Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, Cleveland, New York-New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont and Washington, D.C. Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole said, “The department’s action makes it clear that we will hold financial institutions accountable, including some of the nation’s largest, for lending discrimination. An applicant’s creditworthiness, and not the color of his or her skin, should determine what loans a borrower qualifies for.” By its own accounts, Wells Fargo has $1.3 trillion in assets, and serves one in three households in America through its 9,000 locations, 12,000 ATMs and 270,000 team members. DOJ’s investigation into Wells Fargo’s lending practices began in 2009. A parallel investigation by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) examined lending practices in the metro ar-

Charlene Crowell eas of Baltimore and Washington D.C. OCC found that there was reason to believe that Wells Fargo engaged in a pattern of discrimination in violation of federal laws. The DOJ investigation determined that Wells Fargo knowingly allowed its loan officers and mortgage brokers to subjectively vary interest rates and fees. The investigation showed that Wells Fargo systematically used these exceptions to over

charge Black and Latino borrowers while White borrowers with similar credit profiles paid less. For example, in 2007 a Latino borrower in the Miami area seeking a $300,000 mortgage paid on average $2,538 more than a similarly qualified white applicant. A similarly situated African-American borrower in Miami would be charged an even higher “racial surtax” of $3,657. Last month and in a separate action, Wells Fargo reached a settlement involving lending discrimination with Memphis and Shelby County, Tenn. In that action, both the city and county governments received a $7.5 million settlement, but no borrowers were compensated. About the same time last month, DOJ reached a $21 million settlement of discriminatory actions by SunTrust Bank. And lest anyone think these lending practices are isolated cases, consider the Bank of America settlement following its acquisition of Countrywide, or the smaller banks that settled discriminatory lending cases in Detroit and St. Louis. It is the persistence of these problems that causes the greatest concern. Decades after enacting mul-

tiple anti-discriminatory protections, people of color still cannot be confident that “fair lending” applies to all borrowers. While it is commendable that the DOJ and other enforcement bodies have vigorously pursued these recent cases, it remains deeply troubling that systematic discrimination still survives in the marketplace. For the people and communities affected, the shared consequences are severe. Even with some monetary relief, full financial recovery will not be easy. As Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez, who leads the civil rights division, has said, “This is a case about real people, African-American and Latino, who suffered real harm as a result of Wells Fargo’s discriminatory lending practices.” Borrowers who believe they may have been victims of discriminatory lending by Wells Fargo may contact DOJ at: wellsfargo.settlement@usdoj.gov. Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. She can be reached at: Charlene.crowell@responsiblelending.org.

ASPIRATIONS Passion for travel: Exploring the world within your budget By Michelle Thornhill My first trip out of the U.S. spawned my passion for travel. At 17, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Finland as part of the Youth for Understanding program. While I’d traveled to Disney World and lots of other road trips growing up, my trip to Finland was not only my first time traveling abroad but also my very first time on an airplane. In Finland, I was initially out of my comfort zone because there were not many people who looked or talked like me. However, being fully immersed in a culture that was different from anything I’d been exposed to turned out to be a transformative experience. I was among others who shared a common passion: We all wanted to learn more about the world outside of what we knew. It can be expensive to travel, and funding can sometimes seem out of reach. Still, planning your budget with room for a vacation can be very rewarding—and sometimes necessary, given the daily demands we all face. While you might be unable to travel abroad, or outside of driving distance, there are ways to make affordable travel a realistic

possibility. Like many things in life, sometimes there must be tradeoffs. One of my biggest tradeoffs is spending less on depreciable assets (like cars and clothing) so that I can direct more money toward travel. My children also like to travel, and we’ve been fortunate to have them explore the world with us—but not without tradeoffs. Throughout the year, they sacrifice toys, video games

and other “extras” for the promise of a vacation. While I continue to learn new things about where to travel, how to get the best deals, when to travel and the best places to travel with kids, here are a few tips I have gleaned from experience: Compile a list of places that you would like to visit, and determine what you want to get out of each experience (such as learn a new language). Also, consider developing two lists, one for domestic/local travel and another for international. This way you can make decisions based on your current financial situation. Obtain a passport for everyone in your household well in advance of travel to avoid rush fees. Children’s passports are valid for five years, and adults’ passports are valid for 10. Start a travel fund or vacation account (such as a savings or investment account). Birthday gifts, tax refunds, or bonuses are a great way to grow this account. Also consider setting up a regular automatic transfer from your main account to your vacation account. Establish a budget for what you will spend on travel for the year, including: travel costs, accommodations, meals, excursions and shop-

ping. After travel, apply any unused funds to your vacation savings account. Monitor your spending while on vacation by keeping an itemized list of all expenses to ensure you stay within your budget. Mobile banking tools are a great way to track expenses on the go. Research your travel options early, but do not book your travel too far in advance. Some of the best travel deals are available a few months before your planned travel dates. For deeper discounts, you should also be prepared to pay for your travel in

full (and be sure to consider purchasing travel insurance if you do). If your financial situation doesn’t allow you to travel outside of your local area, take advantage of other options that expose you to the world, like day trips, TV programs (I love HGTV House Hunters International), books, magazines and museums. Mellody Hobson appointed After School Matters Board Chair The Board of Directors of After School Matters, the nonprofit organization that provides high quality, out-of-school time opportunities for Chicago high school teens in the arts, communications, science, sports and technology, announced recently that Ariel Investments President Mellody Hobson will serve as the organization’s new chairman, a position that had been vacant since the passing of its founder Maggie Daley in November of last year. Additionally, it was announced that Nora Daley Conroy will join the organization’s board of directors and Patrick Daley will join its advisory board, carrying on their mother’s legacy of ensuring that Chicago teens have opportunities to develop their talents and gain critical skills for work, college and beyond. In announcing these appointments, Roger J. Kiley, Jr., vice chairman of After School Matters Board of Directors, expressed great confidence about the future of the 21-year-old nonprofit organization. “Mellody’s strong financial leadership and managerial skills are just what we need to sustain the vitality of our organization and ensure that we continue to fulfill our vision to help Chicago teens discover their potential and find their path to a meaningful life,” said Kiley. “I know that Mellody and our new CEO, Dr. Mary Ellen Caron, will help our organization grow and expand to meet the needs of even more Chicago teens.” Beyond her work at Ariel, Hobson serves as chairman of the board of trustees for Ariel Investment Trust. Hobson currently serves as a director of DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., Groupon, Inc. and Starbucks Corporation. She also serves on the

Trinity pioneers surgery and wound advances For Chicago’s Southeast Side residents, the medical future is now, thanks to two innovative steps by Trinity Hospital. The hospital recently opened a robotic surgery and a wound care center – both represent some of the latest advances in medicine. The robotic surgery represents some of the latest technology in minimally invasive surgery, while the wound care center is a stateof-the-art facility that means previously untreatable wounds have a change of being cured. The wound center also houses a hyperbaric treatment center. This facility is at 8751 S. Greenwood Ave., Suite 100. The hospital’s new surgical robot

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

Sleepless Night Sleepless Night is a movie about a cop who is on the take who ends up having his son taken by drug lords, just when he is supposed to be watching him for the night. He goes throughout the night, having his wife think that everything is OK, even when he’s not sure if the thugs will kill his son, while holding him captive at a lounge. Vincent, played by Tomer Sisley, is a well-respected cop, as well as a devoted husband and father. But below the surface of his idyllic life, greed pushes him to become involved with a very dangerous group of gangsters and drug dealers. When Vincent and his partner are caught stealing a massive quantity of cocaine from a powerful drug lord, the darker side of Vincent’s life threatens to destroy his family and career. In a race against the clock, Vincent must return the drugs in order to save his son’s life. This proves to be easier said than done, as the world around him seems to conspire to keep Vincent from doing what is necessary to protect his son. Set over the course of one night in a massive nightclub, Frederic Jardin’s film is a smart and endlessly entertaining thriller. The energy and drive of this film are utterly contagious, making it impossible not to get swept up in Vincent’s dilemma. Filled with fantastic action sequences, strong performances, and a thrilling visual style, Jardin’s film is a thoroughly original crowd-pleaser. There’s nothing worse than a parent not being able to protect a child, but in Sleepless Night, the night really belongs to the drug

TOMER SISLEY, as Vincent in Sleepless Night, makes a call that he hopes will save his life. lords, as Vincent tries desperately to get his son out of the club in one piece. And as the movie unfolds, there is more and more corruption, and it’s hard to keep up with just which cops are on the take and which cops are really on the up-and-up. Sleepless Night was first screened at the recent Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and it is now premiering at the Music Box Theatre on North Southport Avenue in Chicago. It is a fast-paced movie that will keep your attention. Audience members will be consumed with trying to figure out just who is on the law’s side, while cheering for the son to not become a victim of his father’s criminal acts. To the son’s credit, he is also conspiring to free himself of his captors, but

he falls short in this quest. Unfortunately, this just gets him in more trouble. Check the Music Box website for more information. Editor’s Note: It wouldn’t be right if, in this column about movies, I didn’t mention the recent massacre at the Colorado movie theater at a widely anticipated showing of The Dark Knight Rises. I admit that I didn’t plan on screening this movie for Crusader viewers, even before this sad event. In the Chicago area, in the past, violence has been associated with screenings of movies with a primarily young, urban audience. And I’m sure this incident was shocking, considering the movie that was being shown. But I’ve been reading myriad articles about the killings. In one, I read that a neighbor of the family of the suspected killer, James Holmes, described Holmes as a “typical American kid—he kept to himself and he didn’t seem to have many friends.” Well, Heaven help us if the carnage that ended a dozen lives and wounded scores others early July 20 is the work of a typical American kid! A sense of morality must be restored among our young to address nihilism and apathy throughout the nation, particularly on the streets of Chicago. My prayers are with the families affected by violence—both at home and in that Denver suburb. The Chicago Crusader

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES A Review by Bonnie DeShong I sat in the darkened theater, waiting for the last of the Batman Trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan, to begin. The theater is full. Everyone waiting to see what has happened to Batman since The Dark Knight left him taking the blame for the death of Gotham City’s favorite son, Harvey Dent. What has happened to Bruce Wayne and is Alfred still around? The film opens with Gotham City at peace due to the Dent Act (which I am not sure what the act is, I was crunching popcorn). Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) is feeling remorseful about not speaking up about the way Harvey

Bane vs. Batman The Chicago Crusader

Dent really died and the thing he had become. The beautiful Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) is a “cat” burglar stealing a necklace from Bruce Wayne’s (Christian Bale) mansion and Bruce is wallowing around his suite of rooms in his PJ’s feeling sorry for himself. In the bowels of Gotham City is Bane (Tom Hardy), a real, real, bad man who wears a mask (sort of like a gas mask thing), and speaks like Darth Vader on Novocain. I really wish they had subtitles for him. I could not understand half of what he was saying, but he looked real mean. His purpose is to blow Gotham City off the map with a nuclear bomb. Between Cat Woman playing both sides and Bane causing

havoc, Batman must come back to Gotham City to save the day. Bruce Wayne is kind of rusty, not having taken care of himself for the past eight years, but there are a lot of great gadgets that Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) has acquired for such a day. There are warm fuzzies like the boys in the orphanage that believe in Batman. John Blake, (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) the young rooky police officer who grew up in that orphanage, not only believing in Batman but knowing his identity and now working to clear Batman’s name. The beautiful and rich Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) who will save Wayne Enterprises when it falls to ruin. How did I really feel about the film? I loved it. I loved the characters, the story, the action, the twists, and the humanness of it. Yes, there were parts that were a little over the top, but its Batman. Poor Alfred (Michael Caine), that’s all I’m going to say about that. I really liked Anne Hathaway as Cat Woman. She played it with just the right amount of everything. She wasn’t just a beautiful woman acting like a cat. She had lots of layers and was a real woman with issues. Neither Christopher Nolan nor the actors phoned this one in. I really like the ending. The Dark Knight Rises is worth SPENDING THE MONEY to see at the theaters, twice.

You were practically pinned to your seat. They called it a smackdown, but you knew it was as pure adrenaline. The good guy with white tights and the bad guy in blue, in the ring together, and you were never more excited about anything in your life – so much so, that they were miles away from your living room and couldn’t possibly hear you, but you screamed encouragement until the match was done and so were you. Some say pro wrestling is fake, but you don’t care: you love it, but what do you know about it? Read “The King of New Orleans” by Greg Klein, and you might learn something new… Born in North Carolina in December, 1952, Sylvester Ritter was raised by his grandmother because neither of his parents were around to do it. He was a good kid but not much of a scholar, so he was happy when his school integrated with the white school. Integration meant that Ritter had a better chance at football. In eighth grade, at over six feet tall and 228 pounds, he seemed made for the game. After high school, Ritter played football at Fayetteville State University and later tried out with the Oilers and the Packers, but injuries kept him from a pigskin career. His dreams “dashed,” he joined his hometown sheriff’s department where, during a wrestling tournament, he discovered a talent for takedowns. Promoter “Cowboy” Bill Watts was looking for a “superstar,” but it couldn’t be just anyone. Watts was looking for an African Saturday, July 28, 2012

American babyface who could win audiences and matches. Watts knew about Sylvester Ritter, but he thought Ritter needed more experience before he was ready for New Orleans and “real money.” Eager to lose his amateur status, Ritter headed for Canada and threw himself in the ring to learn. By 1979, he was back in New Orleans – which was good because Crescent City residents adored Ritter, who was performing as The Junkyard Dog. They cheered for him, worshipped him, filled arenas for him, and physically assaulted his ringside “enemies” on his behalf. Finally, Watts had his “superstar” and “JYD” had pockets filled with cash. Cash that, unfortunately, also bought cocaine… So you say you’re not really a wrestling fan? That’s okay. Go read the business section because this book isn’t for you anyhow. Author Greg Klein writes with a fan’s-eye view of pro wrestling before it became a TV sensation, and that’s going to appeal to anyone who follows the sport. I liked that Klein explains in detail why Sylvester Ritter’s career is noteworthy and why it’s important to remember his (Continued on page 16) 13

DRAWN FROM PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION OPENS JUNE 21 AT DEPAUL ART MUSEUM: The exhibition Drawn from Photography, showcases 13 artists who use drawing to meticulously translate images originally received through photo-based media or digital circulation. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is ONGOING through August 19. Drawn from Photography is organized by The Drawing Center, New York, and curated by center curator Claire Gilman at the museum located at 935 W. Fullerton Avenue, just east of the CTA’s Fullerton “L” stop. Drawings feature scenes of social transformation from the last two centuries, including scenes of war and protest as well as views of urban landscapes and industrial developments. Whether using found media sources or their own photographs, the artists share a reconstructive, labor-intensive impulse that counteracts the rapid dissemination of information that defines the media age. More than any other art form, drawing is traditionally understood to be an inherently intimate and direct means of expression. Although re-creating images first made by a camera’s impersonal lens may appear to counter the drawn gesture’s authorial imprint, the work in Drawn from Photography can be seen as embodying its own kind of agency. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Tré Thomas to Spread Message of Love at Gospel Festival Gospel music artist Tré Thomas will perform at the highly anticipated 15th Annual Southside Neighborhood Gospel Festival at Ogden Park in Englewood on Saturday, July 28. The festival, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., is the largest neighborhood gospel festival in the city, averaging as many as 10,000 spectators each year. Thomas, who is still riding the successful release of his sophomore album “Finally,” released in March, has been very busy this summer with performances and the release of two music videos for the songs “Finally” and “My Love Will Always Win” from the recent project. Since making his national television debut on BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel in 2011, he has not slowed down. The smooth-voiced crooner is looking forward to showcasing more of his unique music and style before the thousands of spectators who will gather to celebrate, socialize and eat from the various local food vendors. “I’m very excited to perform for the festival,” Thomas said. “Chicago is a big market, and it’s a pleasure to be a part of a popular event

in a city that has a reputation for showcasing great gospel music. I’m honored.” Other artists set to hit the stage are Avery Sunshine, Jesse Campbell, The Brown Sisters, DeAndre Patterson and more. Thomas is looking forward to sharing the stage with such noted artists to make this year’s event a successful and enjoyable one. He also believes that with the high level of violence that has overtaken Chicago recently, particularly in areas like Englewood, it is important to send a strong and positive message to the community. “The festival is a great way to expose my music to an audience I might not normally get a chance to share my music with.” he said. “But most importantly, with the challenges of violence going on in Chicago, I look forward to sharing the message of love. People need to be uplifted, and what better way to help people feel good about themselves and life than through great music.” Love is a word that has become almost synonymous with the singer, who invests a great deal of time promoting it not only

sion on AIDS. Overall, his music career serves as a vehicle to promote love and change in the world. Those at the festival will get a glimpse of that. “My performance at the festival is an opportunity to show that my music is relatable everywhere and to everyone, “Thomas said.”I want everyone to leave the event feeling inspired and empowered. I also hope to gain new fans that en-

Tré Thomas through his music, but in other ways. He is the host of the online radio show “LoveLudes” on the Stellar Award-nominated Bonnerfide Radio. Every Monday night, listeners tune in for conversation and music of all genres that focus on love for oneself, love for others, and most of all, love for God. In addition, Thomas has been devoted to addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Black and low-income communities through his work with an affiliate of the National Black Leadership Commis-

SPORTS 12-Time NBA All-Star Point Guard Isiah Thomas Inspires At-Risk Youth South Suburban Youngsters Encouraged to Dream Big Former Detroit Pistons Point Guard and NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas joined forces with the Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC) and Sheriff Tom Dart to share the secrets of his success with young residents of one of the state’s poorest communities in Ford Heights, IL. Thomas was hosted by the HACC Executive Director Rich Monocchio and Chief Operating Officer Sue Wiemer as the special guest speaker at Camp Nabad, which was started a dozen years

ago by the Cook County Sheriff and later co-sponsored by the HACC. Speaking to a group of 4th through 6th graders at the Vera Yates Homes in Ford Heights, Thomas told the youngsters that they can overcome any challenges they face and create successful lives for themselves, inside the sports world and beyond. “I was one of these kids and someone took the time to pay attention to me and give me some good advice. They had no idea what impact their words had on me,” said Thomas. “You never know who you’re touching or

who that kid’s going to grow up to be. On any given day, you can make a big difference in their life.” Thomas grew up in poverty on Chicago’s West Side and rose to greatness as one of the National Basketball Association’s most accomplished players. He went on to another series of successes as a NBA commentator, a manager and head coach after his playing career ended. The HACC Executive Director

Monocchio said they welcomed the opportunity for Thomas to speak to the youngsters because Thomas is a role model for how to rise above your circumstances. “We want these youngsters to know that they can achieve greatness if they aspire to greatness. They face many obstacles but we want to inspire them to keep striving.” Camp Nabad is an annual camp experience created as a

joint project of the Sheriff ’s Office and Housing Authority of Cook County. The word “Nabad” means peace and inner harmony. Each day, campers are introduced to character traits that serve as the basis for their day’s activities. Traits emphasize values such as patience, safety, cooperation and co-existence. Camp Nabad serves 4th, 5th and 6th grade residents of public housing in south suburban Ford Heights, Chicago Heights and Robbins.

Bringing NASCAR to the hood: Pioneer Tia Norfleet is a first By J. Coyden Palmer Seeing an African American on the NASCAR circuit is a rarity. Seeing an African American female sitting behind the wheel and driving in the race has been unheard of until recently. That is because Tia Norfleet, a native of Suffolk, Virginia, and driver of the number 34 car, is the first and only African American female ever licensed by NASCAR. The daughter of Bobby Norfleet, himself a NASCAR driver, Tia was introduced to the sport at an early age. Now living in Augusta, Georgia, where NASCAR is the king sport, she is trying to promote the sport in non-traditional NASCAR communities. “My dad was heavy on the motor sports scene. Everything from street racing, drag racing, to professional driving that’s where my influence came from,” said the 24 year-old beauty, who began competing in kart racing events at the age of 14. “It’s just something about the thrill and excitement of being able to push a machine to speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour that gets me go-

ing. I’ve been a tomboy my whole life.” Unlike most sports, auto racing has the inherent risk of death or serious injury to drivers, crew members and even spectators. Norfleet said despite all the advances in safety equipment, danger will always be a part of the sport and she added that is why NASCAR drivers have a very rare makeup. “I don’t focus on getting hurt,” she explained. “I don’t pay attention to the crashes. I believe in God and that everything happens for a reason. I say my prayers, I thank him and I just go for what I know. If you’re thinking about getting hurt, then you won’t be able to perform.” Norfleet was in Chicago earlier this month speaking at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Convention, where she headlined the athletic forum and spoke of the challenges of being a Black female in an environment of mostly white, southern, men. Norfleet said one of the factors that keep African Americans out of the sport is not the perceived racism, but rather the expense. The biggest chunk of a driver’s budget is

earmarked for the construction, maintenance and upgrades of an entire fleet of race cars, she said. Not to mention fuel costs and travel to different events. To help offset those costs, Norfleet is operating a grassroots funding initiative called “Take the Norfleet Challenge” where anyone can donate to her cause. She is also looking for corporate sponsors. Norfleet said her parents are her biggest inspiration for different reasons. She witnessed the struggles her father went through being a Black race car driver and she admires his persistence. She said it is her mother who taught her to love herself, flaws and all at all costs. She said those lessons are important when you are an innovator. “Being a leader and not a follower and opening up doors that in the past were closed is still important to our community,” Norfleet said. “And being a role model brings about the responsibility of being in the limelight in a positive way and being the person that I’m portrayed to be. Social media plays a big role in this industry today because it puts you out there to a lot of peoSaturday, July 28, 2012

ple.” Though she is currently only racing in smaller events in the Southeast United States, Norfleet dreams of making it to bigger NASCAR events like the Daytona 500. She is appreciative of all the support coming from the Black community as she tries to educate Blacks around the country about the sport. She believes those in urban cities do not get the same exposure to NASCAR on a personal level as those who live in the rural areas. But with NASCAR ranked as the fastest growing sport in America two years ago by Sports Illustrated, she hopes more Blacks will give the sport a chance. “When I dream of something, I go for it 100 percent because I know if you don’t put anything into it, you’re not going to get anything out of it,” she said. “I think with my face being attached to NASCAR, it will allow more people to at least look into the sport, just as Tiger Woods did for golf and the Williams’ sisters did for tennis.” 19
