Council votes to bring third Wal-Mart store to Chicago By J. Coyden Palmer This time there was less fanfare and no debate as the City Council approved by a vote of 41-4 to allow the construction of a new Wal-Mart store in the West Chatham community at 83rd and Stewart. That means the city will have three of the world’s largest retailer’s stores within the city limits. Last week Mayor Daley, along with Alderman Howard Brookins (21st) held a press conference at the proposed site saying it was needed for the residents of the community. The Wal-Mart debate ended last month when the council approved a deal to build a store in neighboring Pullman. That store was approved after Wal-Mart agreed to pay higher wages to its employees. Brookins said he felt that was the turning point in getting a store built in his ward, something he has been trying to do for the past six years. “I’m glad it’s over,” said an excited Brookins outside council chambers. “Every day, I woke up talking about Wal-Mart. Finally, we can start putting people to work in the 21st Ward.” The four council members who voted against the plan were Ald. Toni Preckwinkle, Ald. Joe Moore, Ald. Ricardo Munoz and Ald. Gene Schulter. None of them explained their no votes or offered discussion
on the issue. Brookins said there was no debate on the issue because the city has since changed its idea of Wal-Mart. He said six years ago the economy was different and people really had a problem with the way Wal-Mart did business. But with the company agreeing to pay workers $8.75 an hour, $.50 more than the state’s minimum wage, many people changed their tune. He added that with the people supporting the idea, his colleagues in the council who were afraid of the unions had something to fall back on. “Clearly, the unions had a stranglehold on the Council. And there was a perception that the [Austin neighborhood around] store on the West Side was in much more desperate straits for economic development and job opportunities. But my community needs jobs, groceries, medicine and all of the other goods Wal-Mart offers. This is a good day for the 21st Ward.” Although approved last, Brookins said the Wal-Mart store in his area will probably be up and running long before the one in Pullman. He said the site where the store will be built already has the infrastructure needed, seeing that it is on the site of the Chatham Market shopping mall. The market currently has only two stores; a Potbelly sandwich shop and a Lowe’s. The manager of the Potbelly’s told the Crusader he is excited about Wal-Mart
coming because it will generate more business for his store. He said his customers will probably come from Wal-Mart after
they shop, but many come by for lunch during their breaks from other businesses (Continued on page 2)
EXELON SENIOR VICE President Tom O’Neill, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, Chicago Department of Environment Commissioner Suzanne MalecMcKenna, Exelon CEO John Rowe and 34th Ward Alderman Carrie Austin (L-R) were on hand for the dedication of the Exelon City Solar power plant, Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood. The plant is the largest urban solar power plant in the nation.
Free Press targets poor Blacks and Women for Net Neutrality Campaign By Dr. Yaounde Olu In a bid to ensure Net Neutrality, the Free Press has commissioned the Harmony Institute to develop a strategy that will target poor, rural African Americans in the South and women to increase support for a Net Neutrality (NN) strategy. Net Neutrality is basically the principle that all Internet traffic should be treated equally. In other words, everyone has access, and all platforms, content, and sites are treated equally. The opposite concept is a system wherein there would be limited or possibly “tiered” access. This could impact small businesses and other individuals without the economic wherewithal to access all sites. According to the Free Press, the core sup-
porters of Net Neutrality are affluent whites, who, have easy access to broadband and understand the issues. Poor, rural African Americans and women, however, are the demographic that must be influenced in order to build a secure NN support base. The Harmony Institute, a self-identified nonprofit organization committed to applying behavioral science to communications, in response to the Free Press’ commission, has produced a manual for the purpose of achieving these ends entitled Net Neutrality For the Win: How Entertainment and the Science of Influence Can Save Your Internet. This 40-page document identifies poor, rural African Americans and women as “persuadable” for Net Neutrality messaging, and lays out very specif-
ic strategies for accomplishing their end goal of manipulating this demographic. The Free Press’ own National Poll on Internet Usage and Net Neutrality found that the general public gave generally favorable views regarding their service providers and the reliability and speed of their connection. Though this is the case, in order to move ahead with the strategy of
broadening the NN support base, they have offered a number of “what if” scenarios in order to shore up their position that the Internet needs “saving.” This is because support for NN depends upon the perception that there is a potential threat to a free Internet. One of the strategies used in the manual (Continued on page 3)

NEWS Mayor Daley and Exelon CEO dedicate nation’s largest Urban Solar Power Plant 34th Ward Alderman Carrie Austin, SunPower executives, government officials and community leaders on hand to announce the completion of the Exelon City Solar facility Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley joined Exelon Chairman and CEO John Rowe and other local dignitaries on Chicago’s South Side recently to dedicate Exelon City Solar, the nation’s largest urban solar power plant. Exelon transformed a 41-acre site in the West Pullman neighborhood from a former industrial brownfield property that had been vacant for more than 30 years into a source of clean, renewable energy – and pride for the community. “I want to thank Exelon and SunPower for their vision and their commitment to Chicago. This project is a great example of the good things that happen when government and the private sector work together,” Daley said. The $60 million project’s 32,292 solar photovoltaic panels convert the sun’s rays into more than 14,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year – enough to meet the annual energy requirements of up to 1,500 average homes while generating zero carbon emissions. Exelon Generation owns and operates the 10-megawatt plant and will market the electricity it generates. “This state-of-the-art demonstra-
tion facility will give Exelon valuable insights into the solar market, deliver a real environmental benefit for Chicago by adding clean energy to the grid, and enhance the neighboring community by beautifying a brownfield and improving safety for local residents,” Rowe said. Exelon City Solar supports Mayor Daley’s Chicago Climate Action Plan and efforts to create a lasting environmental legacy for the city’s residents. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s system for calculating emission savings, Exelon City Solar will displace approximately 31.2 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually, equivalent to taking more than 2,500 cars off the road. Exelon City Solar advances the company’s efforts to actively address climate change through Exelon 2020, an environmental and business strategy to reduce, offset or displace more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020. This is an amount greater than the company’s 2001 carbon footprint and equivalent to taking nearly 3 million cars off the road. Construction on the site began in July 2009, with commercial operation commencing in December 2009 and final site work completed this month. SunPower Corp. EXELON CEO JOHN ROWE addresses an audience of more than 100 at the dedication of the Exelon City Solar power plant, Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood. Joining him were Exelon Power President Doyle Beneby, 34th Ward Alderman Carrie Austin and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley (L-R). The plant is the largest urban solar power plant in the nation. and installed the system. “SunPower solar plants are welcomed by our communities, including those on urban industrial sites like Exelon City Solar,” said SunPower Executive Vice President Julie Blunden. “With our high-efficiency, high-capacity factor solar technology, Exelon City Solar maximizes energy delivered to the grid throughout the day by using SunPower trackers. Today, SunPower’s solar photovoltaic technology can be implemented anywhere and at any scale – from rooftops to utility-
scale power plants.” The project spurred local economic development as it created more than 200 construction jobs, with at least half of all work hours filled by Chicago residents. Additionally, approximately 44 percent of contractors working on the project were minority-owned businesses, and steel tubing and other construction materials were sourced from companies on Chicago’s South Side. The speakers at the press conference were:
• Doyle Beneby, president, Exelon Power • Alderman Carrie Austin, 34th Ward, City of Chicago • Mayor Richard M. Daley, City of Chicago • John Rowe, chairman and CEO, Exelon Corporation • Julie Blunden, executive vice president for public policy and corporate communications, SunPower Corp. • Larry Huggins, president and CEO, Riteway-Huggins Construction

We, of the NNPA, are willing to join others in establishing a fund for Mr. Rangel to do what he needs to do to reclaim his good name and reputation and continue his indispensible legislative leadership in the U.S. Congress. At the June National Newspaper Publishers Association’s (NNPA) convention in New York City, the Black Press of America was proud to present a special Eagle Award to New York Congressman Charles Rangel. We presented the award to Mr. Rangel in recognition of his more than four decades of dedicated leadership and extraordinary public service to his country as a most effective and productive member of the U.S. Congress. Mr. Rangel has been a political pioneer. He has been one of our heroes. A veteran of the Korean War, he was the first African American to serve on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and made history by becoming the first of his race to serve as chairman of the committee. As I was calling Washington on Thursday, July 22, to arrange a return call to Mr. Rangel, it was the exact moment of the House Ethics Committee announcing its report on pending charges
against the Harlem Congressman. This, indeed, was a touch of irony. Of course, we know that one of the most important principles of America’s democracy is due process, that a person is innocent of any charges until all the facts are in and that person is either proven guilty or acquitted of the charges. This due process must be respected in the ethics charges against Mr. Rangel. He has admitted some mistakes, but we
need not rush to judgment as was in the flagrant case involving Shirley Sherrod. What should be clear to Black leadership and concerned and caring Black citizens, especially those who know and deeply appreciate the impeccable character and integrity of Charles Rangel, the man, the husband, and the public servant, is our need to respond in a supportive, substantive way. We have read the media reports that he has spent more than $2

what was the status quo. We need his leadership now more than ever as fringe racial elements emerge and the Black middle class, along with its equity built up over the years, is being destroyed by a confluence of an economic recession, depression level unemployment, and the home foreclosure crisis. This is a survival fight that American Americans cannot afford to lose. And we need the savvy leadership of Congressman Charlie Rangel in his congressional post fighting for our interests.

They say knowing they can walk to the new store will make things easier for them although there will be an increase in traffic. “I think the store coming to our community will do more good than bad,” said Arielle Berkman,
who lives two blocks from Chatham Market. “I mean right now there really isn’t a lot of business going on over there. The two stores they have are doing great but that property can handle a lot more businesses. I think with Wal-Mart coming, all the other offices that they haven’t been able to lease for months will be filled up pretty quick.” The Chicago Crusader
NEWS Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich case in hands of jury By J. Coyden Palmer After weeks of testimony, media statements, grandstanding attorneys and just plain strangeness, the jury has begun deliberating the plight of former Governor Rod Blagojevich and his brother Rob on corruption charges. Jurors were being instructed by Federal Judge James Zagel at Crusader press time. Blagojevich and his brother are charged with among other things, trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat of President Barrack Obama. The jury of 12 is divided equally among gender lines and there are three African Americans on the jury. Blagojevich and his wife Patti showed up at the Dirksen Federal Building all smiles Wednesday morning. This time the eccentric couple did not bring along their two daughters, who had attended the previous two days. Many critics said
the Blagojeviches brought their children only to try to score points with the jury. Defense Attorney Sam Adam Jr. denied that claim. He told jurors his client should be freed because prosecutors never proved anything illegal took place. Adam called Blagojevich “silly” and an “ineffective chief executive” who could not plan the elaborate schemes the government is claiming. “He’s got absolutely horrible judgment in people,” Adam Jr. said. “As much as I like him, and as much as he’s loved around the world, this is a man who considered appointing Oprah Winfrey [to the U.S. Senate]. No one’s going to say he’s the sharpest knife in the drawer.” Blagojevich is being charged with 24 counts of misusing his powers as governor to extort campaign contributions from those seeking legislation, appointments or other favors. He has denied every charge and said
he was unfairly impeached from office because he was only trying to work for the people of Illinois. But the undercover wiretaps from the FBI played by prosecutors during the trial paint a different Blagojevich, one who seemed to despise voters. “(I gave) your grandmother a free (expletive) ride on a bus. And what do I get for that? Only 13 percent of you all out there think I’m doing a good job,” said Blagojevich steaming mad about a poll that showed only 13 percent of voters approved of the job he was doing. “So (expletive) all of you!” The tapes also allowed jurors to hear Blagojevich discussing how the appointment of a new senator could benefit his political career. Prosecutors alleged that Blagojevich was hoping to parlay the senate appointment into a job with the Obama administration as an ambassador.
Rod Blagojevich “I’ve got this thing and it’s golden. And I, I’m just not giving it up for nothing. I can always use it and parachute me there. I talked to Fred about that. You know, there’s life after that if I do it.” Blagojevich said he also considered appointing himself as senator, serving out the remainder of Obama’s
six-year term and then seeking reelection. Prosecutors said Blagojevich and his wife were facing serious money problems. Federal agents testified that Blagojevich and his wife Patti were at least $200,000 in consumer debt when he was arrested in December 2008. “I’m stuck,” Blagojevich said, his voice rising. “The whole world is passing me by and I’m stuck in the job of governor. I’ve got to figure out a way to take some financial stress off my family. I can’t afford college for my daughter.” Ever since his arrest Blagojevich claimed he was going to take the stand during his trial. But last week that changed as his defense attorneys said there was no need for their client to take the stand because prosecutors had not proved anything during their presentation. They felt their client taking the stand would only hurt his chances of acquittal.
Free Press targets poor Blacks and Women for Net Neutrality Campaign references, offers evaluation methods which include a series of questions for survey development, and concludes, “The key questions asked while assessing the impact of entertainment on audiences will help improve the methods entertainment creators and educators use to support social concerns like NN. Building upon previous work, these studies can contribute to a greater understanding of how people understand and why they take
to provoke a response among the target demographic is the use of inflammatory images. A cartoon that brings up painful memories of Jim Crow in the South is offered for this purpose. It depicts two water fountains representing the “fountain network”; one is big and elaborate with sparkly stars representing quality and is labelled “premium users,” while the other very small one, connected to it with leaky pipes encrusted with spider webs, is labelled “everyone else.” The Free Press has concluded that the best method of persuasion is behavioral science models that rely on psychological techniques, entertainment, and fictionalized storytelling instead of hard data, information, or real education. The model embeds messages into popular culture. They conclude that... “Understanding the audience helps communicators select the most appropriate behavioral science models to employ. It also helps determine the preferred media channels (mobile phone, Internet, television, film, print) for transmitting the message to a specific audience.” (Net Neutrality For the Win: How Entertainment and the Science of Influence Can Save Your Internet, p. 28). It continues...“The long term persuasive power of narrative resides in its ‘sleeper effect,’ i.e., the impact of an idea increases over time when the one discounting cue, that the source of information is a fictional account, is forgotten.” (Net Neutrality For the Win: How Entertainment and the Science of Influence Can Save Your Internet, p.31). Though a good deal of time and
attention has been devoted to manipulating would-be supporters in the document, nowhere are there plans for a campaign to ensure that the targeted population of poor, rural African Americans and women have equal access to Internet service. Prominent members of the African American community have expressed serious concerns about the strategy laid out in the Free Press document. Shirley Franklin, a former mayor of Atlanta, offered the following observation, “It troubles me that an organization would target women, African Americans and other minorities on an issue of such importance as universal broadband services without basing their advocacy on access, affordability and relevance.” Julius Hollis, Chairman and founder of the Alliance for Digital Equality (www.alliancefordigitalequality.org), an organization whose mission is to ensure accessible and affordable broadband to the underserved and un-served, particularly to communities of color, also weighed in on the issue. He stated, “I am extremely disappointed in the Free Press, not only in its policies and tactics that they are attempting deploy in their strategy paper, but equally disturbing are its attempts to portray the African American and Latino consumers as expendable in their efforts to promote Net Neutrality. In my opinion, this is going back to the tactics that were used in the Jim Crow era by segregationists. It’s no better than what was used in the Willie Horton playbook by Lee Atwater who, upon his deathbed, asked for forgiveness for using such political behavior tactics.” The document, which cites 33

action on an issue. Such insights have the capacity to transform the advocacy world as a whole. (Net Neutrality For the Win: How Entertainment and the Science of Influence Can Save Your Internet, P. 35). Danny J. Bakewell, Sr., Chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), is taking the lead on fighting the Free Press’s NN strategy. He stated, “... I am outraged. And you should be too. I urge you to get
out in your community and tell your friends, tell your neighbors, and tell those you meet at church and other groups about this appalling report. Most importantly, call and email Free Press and tell them you need a broadband connection to your house, not a subliminal message beamed into your subconscious.” The full document is available to the public online at harmonyinstitute.org/ftw.

EDITORIAL SHIRLEY SHERROD AND PANIC IN THE WHITE HOUSE The political climate in the United States for incumbents and wanna-be’s is precarious, or downright hazardous these days. The Obama administration is bearing a disproportionate brunt of all political maneuverings, seemingly resulting in a type of low-grade, ongoing panic. Because of this, President Obama and his political cohorts are always walking on eggshells, since whatever occurs during his tenure will be exaggerated and/or attacked. This tendency to be overly cautious and jumpy may be why two high profile, female, African American public servants have been kicked to the curb during the first 6 months of his administration. The first casualty is related to the debacle wherein an uninvited couple showed up at a White House function. According to those in the know, the White House social secretary, Desiree Rogers, had invisible fingers of blame pointed at her. Though she was not fired because of this mishap, people speculate that this was the reason that she resigned. The most recent incident involving Ms. Shirley Sherrod, the former Georgia state director for rural development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is more egregious. Ms. Sherrod, an accomplished and dedicated public servant, was made to resign in a knee-jerk reaction resulting from comments taken out of context from a speech that she made. Ms. Sherrod, whose father was murdered by White racists, recounts the story of how she had to overcome her own racism because of this and arrive at a point of being concerned about all poor citizens. Right wing bigots, eager to jump onto anything that can be used against the current administration, disingenuously misrepresented Ms. Sherrod and took her statements out of context. She was subsequently accused of racism and without due process, was asked to pull over to the side of the road and tender her resignation. She was not allowed to give her side of the story. In one fell swoop, the reputation of someone with a long and untarnished career was smeared without cause. Later, with egg on their faces when the facts were uncovered, the U.S.D.A. offered her job back. We understand the pressure that could have resulted in this overreaction by an administration under fire, but we also feel that cooler heads should prevail in situations such as this. Making decisions and acting under pressure come with the job, and the best effort should be made at all times to ensure fairness, especially since it is evident that unscrupulous enemies are itching for any opportunity that will help them achieve their end of toppling the current administration. Those responsible for castigating Ms. Sherrod before all of the facts were known should be made to apologize publicly. More importantly, the Obama folks should adopt a cooler stance while resisting an urge to rush to judgment, looking at every situation with a jaundiced eye until all of the facts are in. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Juvenile Justice Reform Dear Editor: The appointment last week of a new state juvenile justice chief – a veteran of the state’s child welfare system – signals a new era in juvenile justice reform. Arthur Bishop is on record favoring a different treatment model for troubled youth that emphasizes rehabilitation and second chances. That is good news, not only for the youth and their families, but for all Illinois citizens. As president of the Illinois State Bar Association, I will work closely with our members to concentrate on the very important issue of juvenile justice reform. For too long, we have largely employed a system that has failed our youth, spending a staggering $100 million annually to lock them up in state correctional facilities or in detention centers while they await trial. It’s not working – for them or for us. Fortunately, we are beginning to see a reversal of this past trend. Research from the MacArthur Foundation, a partner in our effort, shows that half or more of our youth sent to prison for lesser crimes return to our
communities after discharge from prison without rehabilitation having occurred. The last thing we want to happen is increased exposure of our youth to hardened criminals as their role models. We already know what works. Leaders in Illinois communities of all sizes, including lawyers, prosecutors and judges, have implemented alternative treatment options that are producing results. During my presidency, many of our lawyer and judge members of the bar will focus on and celebrate the good work already underway. In the process, we hope to raise further awareness of this timely issue. The next few years will be crucial ones for juvenile justice reform. We must all work together to ensure that all of our youth can fulfill their dreams and become, instead of a liability, an asset to our community. Sincerely, Mark D. BEYOND THE RHETORIC
When Will Hillary Make Her Move? By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist Common logic is that Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of State and former First Lady, will once again run for the presidency in 2016. After all, that would follow current President Barack Obama assuming he will win another term in 2012. In 2012 Secretary Clin-
Harry C. Alford ton will be 65-years-old. That is significantly younger than the 69 she will be in 2016. Furthermore if President Obama fails in his reelection she would be facing a tough incumbent in 2016 and the
chances of losing become far greater than succeeding someone of your own party. Make no mistake Secretary Clinton is a terribly competitive politician with ambition that exceeds the skies. Once decided she will relentlessly pursue the Presidency and her ever politically astute husband, former President Bill Clinton, will be right at her side along with an army of veterans from his former administration. Many of these veterans now work for the Obama administration but I am sure that many are growing wary of the very negative and nonproductive atmosphere right now. Given the signal many will be more than happy to jump ship. In fact, some may be laying acts of sabotage to push along this possibility. President Obama is losing his base. The very strong independent segment of support is evaporating with each gaffe. The economy is not improving and may even dip once again. This alone will lose much of the independent block he enjoyed in election 2008. Hispanic voters are now less than excited about this presidency as nothing constructive in terms of their direct issues is happening. This group has
always been bi-partisan and has no problem going to the right if it appears that it is in their best interests. Then there is the Black segment of voters who still unwaveringly support President Obama solely based on the 50 percent of Black blood in his body. Ninety-six percent of Black voters still support President Obama even though they are getting very little for that support. One percent of the Stimulus Bill; remaining high incarcerations of young Blacks versus other groups; Black farmers are once again bamboozled; largesse programs that will bust our debt and continue to increase the deficit to the detriment of lower income citizens and on and on. Times have not improved for Blacks and sooner or later that support bubble is going to burst and the President’s unwavering Black loyalty will start to wither away. If independents, Hispanics and Blacks start to leave the Obama camp the Democratic Party will become toast. This fall the House and Senate are up for grabs and who would have thought it. You more than likely will see some new Black congressional members who will be Republicans and this will
send a strong message. At the last Republican National Convention there were about 32 Black delegates. This season there were 37 Black candidates running for Congress. RNC Chairman Michael Steele has made that significant turnaround and offers an alternative to frustrated Blacks, i.e. capitalism. The Clinton Administration was strong on outreach to Black Americans. There were key people who were always engaged in our communities. The Obama Administration is anything but Black. Yes the first Black President is basically doing a white thing at the White House – so odd. Recently, the debacle on Civil Rights Activist Shirley Sherrod who was disgraced for no reason and pummeled by the Obama Administration with false charges was an indication of the naiveté this administration has when it comes to blackness. It was awful the way they bludgeoned this fine Black woman from Georgia based on the lies of a right wing zealot. Don’t they consider the source on these matters? The Obama Administration seems to run from race as opposed to taking a leadership role.
Bill and Hillary are certainly analyzing all of this. Their blind ambition sooner or later is going to kick in and they are going to seize the moment to the detriment of Obama’s tenure. There is no feud like a family feud and it is starting to form. Hillary was on her way in 2008 until this young cocky mulatto from Illinois upset the stage. She still burns from that setback and will be ever relentless the next time she jumps in and she is going to jump in. When will that be? Here is my guess: Hillary will announce her resignation from Secretary of State in the spring of 2011. She will announce her candidacy by June 2011 and will begin assembling an awesome army of supporters and donors to the detriment of the Obama camp. She will attempt to hurt Obama’s chances and hurt them real bad. Then she will pick up the democratic pieces and charge on. An opportunist will certainly seize a great opportunity. The NAACP’s Appalling Attack – and Retraction – on Shirley Sherrod By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist After hearing Minister Louis Farrakhan roundly denounced by Black and Jewish leaders in 1984, purportedly for describing Judaism as a “gutter religion,” I called Farrakhan before writing a story for the Chicago Tribune. Farrakhan denied he had ever described Judaism as a gutter religion and offered up his life to anyone who could prove he had made such a comment. He provided me with an audio tape of the speech in question. Listening very closely, I realized that the Nation of Islam leader had called Judaism a “dirty religion,” not a gutter religion as had been widely reported. Of course, that didn’t make Jews feel any better. Still, if you’re going to attack someone, at least get the facts straight. And that’s exactly what NAACP President Benjamin Jealous failed to do before unfairly criticizing Shirley Sherrod, who was fired by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack on the basis of a doctored tape of one of her speeches. Jealous didn’t merely join the parade of misinformed critics, he volunteered to serve as drum major. Before listening to Sherrod’s The Chicago Crusader
remarks or contacting her to see if reports about her speech were accurate, Jealous issued a stronglyworded statement denouncing Sherrod, the wife of legendary SNCC organizer Charles Sherrod. The statement was initially posted on the NAACP’s website, but later removed. However, I have a copy of the original statement because it was e-mailed to me and other journalists. In the statement, distributed to reporters shortly before midnight on July 19, Jealous said: “We concur with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Vilsack in accepting the resignation of Shirley Sherrod for her remarks at a local NAACP Freedom Fund banquet. Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at the USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race. We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.” Jealous’ appalling comments didn’t stop there. “Her actions were shameful,” he continued. “While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she
George E. Curry had done to this man.” If Jealous had viewed the videotape of the speech before commenting, he wouldn’t have made such a fool of himself and the NAACP. When Jealous did get around to seeing the tape, he issued another statement on July 20 saying Sherrod had been “unfairly maligned.” He stated: “…We have come to the conclusion we were snookered by Fox News and Tea Party Activist Andrew Breitbart into believing she had harmed white farmers because of racial bias.” The NAACP was duped by Fox News and the Tea Party. That’s a sad commentary on the NAACP and the state of Black leadership.
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
How could the nation’s oldest civil rights organization allow itself to be “snookered” by its avowed enemies? And if the president of the NAACP is that gullible, what else has he been snookered on? Although he didn’t acknowledge that he was snookered, Secretary Vilsack offered to re-hire Sherrod, who has yet to decide whether she wants to return. In her speech to the Douglas, Ga. NAACP 24 years ago, long before she became head of the Department of Agriculture’s rural development office in Georgia, Sherrod recalled the death of her father. “It was 45 years ago today that my father’s funeral was held,” she said. “I was a young girl at the age of 17 when my father was murdered by a White man in Baker County. In Baker County, the murder of Black people occurred periodically and in every case the White men who murdered them were never punished. It was no different in my father’s case. There were three witnesses to his murder but the grand jury refused to indict the White man who murdered him.” Working for a non-profit group that aided farmers, Sherrod stated, “You know, for the first time I was faced with having to help a White farmer save his farm. He Saturday, July 31, 2010
took a long time talking but he was trying to show me he was superior. I knew what he was doing but he had come to me for help. What he didn’t know, while he was taking all that time trying to show me he was superior to me, I was trying to decide just how much help I was going to give him.” In interviews with reporters, Roger and Eloise Spooner, the White couple at the center of the controversy, said Sherrod gave them enough help in the mid-1980s to save their family farm. The point of Sherrod’s story was that she – like Whites – needed to move beyond racial prejudice. She said, “...Working with him made me see that it’s really about those who have versus those who don’t, you know, and they could be Black, they could be White, they could be Hispanic. And it made me realize then that I needed to work to help poor people, those who don’t have access the way others have.” Ben Jealous says the next time he is presented with information from right-wingers, “We will consider the source and be more deliberate in responding.” It’s appalling that he wasn’t do(Continued on page 16) 5

remarks, and racist’s symbols have permeated the air waves. I am 80 years old and suffering from macular degeneration, an eye disease that afflicts the elderly, but the overt signs of racism have been pervasive, perpetual, pestilent, purulent and powerful, and I, with my less than perfect eyesight, have seen them. Even in the latest stages of the presidential campaign, candidates indirectly or their surrogates directly encouraged, invited and incited racism and racial violence. You don’t have to have a high IQ to understand what tea party advocates mean when they talk about “We want our country back.” That is pure, unadultered, raw racism. The truth be told, this is not their country. This country rightfully belongs to the Native Americans who were robbed of their land, their heritage, their culture and their population. When the right-wing nuts talk about the birthplace of President Obama, they need to check their genealogy. If all the ethnic groups returned to their native lands or lands of origin, then this country would once again be ruled by a people who believed in cooperating with nature and conservation. This would be a more beautiful land because it would be restored to its original, natural beauty. It would be a land of clean, clear breathable air; it would be a land with its natural resources intact; it would be a land where people killed animals only for personal survival and not for lust and greed; and it would be a safer land because there
liberation as a people. Since the Paris Peace Conference, the founding of the League of Nations and the United Nations, several historic and precedent setting appeals, petitions, and complaints have been submitted to the international community speaking for African people in the United States. On December 10, 1918, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) convened a mass meeting of more than 7,000 people in the Place Casino in New York to discuss and ratify nine “peace aims to the Allied Democracies of Europe and America, and to the people of democratic tendencies of the world” assembled at the Paris Peace Conference. Garvey and representatives also attended the founding meeting of the League of Nations in 1920. It was in that spirit of the pioneering international work of Marcus Garvey and the UNIA on behalf of African people that the Durban 400, a delegation led by the December 12th Movement International Secretariat and the National Black United Front
(NBUF) traveled to Durban, South Africa in August 2001 for the United Nations World Conference Against Racism. It was at this conference that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery were declared “Crimes Against Humanity and that Reparations are owed to African people.” It is in this context that African people’s demand for reparations continues. This serves as a tribute to the legacy of Marcus Garvey. Marcus Garvey was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica to Marcus and Sarah Garvey. Marcus Sr., his father, was a descendent of the Maroons. The Maroons were Africans who managed to escape slavery when they reached western shores by jumping from slave ships, or by fleeing slave plantations and establishing well fortified communities deep in the Jamaican interior. Garvey’s mother, Sarah was said to be of extraordinary beauty and possessed a gentle personality. She was also said to have been a deeply religious person. Garvey left school at the age of 14 and became an apprentice printer in Kingston. He worked for a private company and eventually became a foreman. At the age of 20, in 1907, although he was a member of management, Garvey led a newly formed printer’s union strike. The company promised Garvey big rewards and benefits if he would discontinue his union organizing. Garvey refused, was fired, and “blacklisted” by the private printing companies of Kingston. This experience intensified Garvey’s political curiosity concerning the condition of African people. It was at this point in 1909, that he formed the National Club and its publication Our Own. From this point forward, Garvey decided to devote his life to the uplifting of the African race. He published his first newspaper, The Watchman, which gave him an opportunity to express his emerging political views on the plight of African people. While unable to gain support for his organization, Garvey began to travel. He spent time in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Columbia, and Venezuela. These travels gave Garvey an opportunity to observe, that whenever African people and whites were in close proximity, African people were on the bot-
tom. Garvey continued to travel and in 1911 he went to London. He was able to test out his public speaking ability on the condition of African people worldwide at the famous Hyde Park Speaker’s Corner. While in London, Garvey met the editor of the African Times and Orient Review, Duse Mohammed Ali. Ali, an Egyptian scholar, introduced Garvey to many ideas that played an important role in his future thinking. This background gave Garvey the tools he needed to become one of our true twentieth century freedom fighters. Garvey arrived in Harlem, New York on March 16, 1916. By 1919, Garvey was established as the President General of the UNIA/ACL, which had a membership of over three million people with more than 300 branches throughout the African World Community. Perhaps Garvey’s greatest contribution to the uplifting of our people was his ability to find a formula for organizing African people around the African principle: the greatest good for the greatest number. This was reflected in the First International Convention of Negro Peoples of the World in Madison Square Garden, in New York in 1920. Over twenty-five thousand African people from all over the world witnessed the selection of Red, Black and Green as the colors of the Provisional Government. In this context, Garvey and the UNIA/ACL had established an economic arm, the Negro Factories Corporation, with cooperative stores, restaurants, steam laundry shops, tailor shops, dressmaking shops, millinery stores, a doll factory to manufacture African dolls, and a publishing house. Garvey also formed a Steamship Corporation. The goals and objectives of the UNIA had now become clear to the world. As Shawna Maglangbayan points out, “…the Garvey movement and UNIA had become a threat to the white world.” With the cooperation of antiGarvey, “Negro leaders,” Garvey was eventually charged and convicted of mail fraud for selling stock in the African Star Lines. On February 8, 1925, Marcus Garvey was arrested and convicted for mail fraud and imprisoned in Atlanta, Georgia. With a great movement of support by his fol-

He continued to travel and while in London, on June 10, 1940, Garvey lapsed into a coma and made his transition into eternity. The Garvey Movement was one of the greatest mass movements of African people in the world. Although the external and internal forces and enemies of Garvey caused his demise, the ideas of
would be no guns, just bows and arrows. I am so sick and tired of all these ignorant haters who feel they are privileged; and, in their ignorance and bigotry, they do not have to respect anything or anybody. A liar will steal and a thief will do anything. When one denies what one sees that is a lie! Mr. Smith, I am going to have to call you out because as a fully grown adult with hopefully some degree of visual acuity, there is no way under the sun that you have not seen these racist posters, billboards, flyers and signs defiling the President of the United States of America, and people of color. You are on the wrong side of the street and behind your back you are considered like everyone else of your skin color. You can pretend all you want to, but that only proves you to be hypocritical. There’s a group suggesting that people purchase a tee shirt with a Biblical quote calling for the children of the President to become orphans. Only the blind have not seen it. If it is true that you have not seen it I will send it to you. If you have not seen the cartoons depicting both the President and the First Lady as baboons, I will send those to you. If you did not see racists name calling and spitting on legislators of African origin, I will see to it that you get the video. Everyone has to pay the price for stupidity! Your payday will come! Helen L. Burleson, Doctor of Public Administration Garvey and the UNIA/ACL are still alive. We need to revitalize and resurrect the spirit of Marcus Mosiah Garvey at every opportunity. One special way to honor the memory of Marcus Garvey is for you to proudly display your Red, Black and Green Flag on his birthday, August 17th in remembrance. The spirit of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey’s is needed now, more than ever before. A Luta Continua / The Struggle Continues!

BLACK SHY Ima never thought she would see the day when a Black man in the White House would sound the alarm when a Black person is accused of discrimination. Barack needs to examine his guard ’cause those that are advising him is “Black shy,” yep that’s what Ima said “Black shy.” It’s the same kind of thing as “Gun shy.” You know once shot you are afraid perhaps forever of a gun. Now the last time Barack said something against a white man about a Black man it cost him some beer and a discussion about the Lord knows what. It was supposed to be a “teachable moment” but it is obvious the lesson learned here was don’t call no white folks stupid even if they is. If you ’member the
Shirley Sherrod President said the police in Boston acted stupidly in arresting Professsor “Skip” Gates when they suspected the cripple Black man was breaking into his own house. It seems as though Gates couldn’t find his keys and he was attempting to get in after a trip away. The press and all of the idiots on Fox and other talk radio and TV kicked the president’s butt about calling the stupid white police “stupid.” Who is more revered in the Black community than Skip Gates? Not many folks I’d say.
Jeremiah Wright The Chicago Crusader
Well, when a Black woman named Shirley Sherrod was reported to have discriminated against some white folks the “stupid” antennas of those folk the president has surrounded himself with just knew she had to be guilty. No need to even look at the video, they just knew she had done it. How many Blacks will it take for the president to realize that he has done some low down things to folks he called his friends, Black friends that is. From Jeremiah Wright to Desiree Our future
Desiree Rogers Rogers and all the small nameless Black folks which we will probably never know have received worse treatment from this Black President than from the racist crackers that have occupied the White House before him. And then the half-breed president of the NAACP jumped on the bandwagon and agreed that she had discriminated against white folks. Ain’t seen much of him since he made a complete fool of himself, but at least his public relations folks tried to correct his mistake. And he’s ’sposed to have been a newspaper man. Lawdy, lawdy, lawdy what is this “new society” coming to? Whatsonever deliver me!!! And now take a look on the otherside of Black folks in my next item.
Are you out with your guy on a date? No. You half naked, boot leg hair and stank. Ready to curse out any other female because you know you bogus. Whatever happened to mamas? The streets is a circus. People my age stay in to keep from hurting you young folk. We ain’t playing with you! Young men out here talking ’bout they pimping. WHAT! I didn’t know they still use that terminology. It’s sick. Is it that there is no place to go? I can see why there is trouble everyday everywhere. We don’t need the police. We need parents. Mary Mitchell wrote an article about ghetto parents. People responded with their angry remarks about the word GHETTO. It fits. You don’t have to like it, but it’s a fact. Keep sending your teenagers
out in the streets looking like hookers. I want them to be treated as such. Allow your sons to go out and penetrate these nasty stank females and produce ’lil boo. You mothers see this stuff every day. You buy and allow your daughters to wear this mess. Is she on BET? HELL NO. We were taught that a man will still be called Mister the day after falling down drunk. That’s still true today. But a hoe is a HOE. I’m sick of seeing you fat ass females with this tight crap on with a inner tube belly. Shaking like jelly. Drag queen lashes and enough weave to help BP. Find who the hell you are. Read a damn book if needed. You know nothing bout the sacrifices made for your worthless behind. You dumb. Can’t cook. You think a meal is a number 4 at Popeye’s. Ain’t no future in your fronting. You passing diseases when you should be passing knowledge. You embarrass me. Not that you care, hell you embarrass your mother and she don’t care. It takes all the control I have to keep from beating you hoes down. On the train, bus, street. Many of you are a disgrace to the race. You know who you are. So does your trifling ass family. I’d vote for men beating you lost, ignorant females down if they was worth more than what the bird left on the limb. Generation X. I don’t love them hoes! How fitting.
- Ima DOG DAY Michael Vick, you need to put a lawyer on retainer and file a suit. You lost millions of dollars because you were involved in dog fighting. You were locked up for some years. Well here in Chicago, four innocent dogs were sent to dog heaven by mistake. Then the director tried to cover the mistake up. Since Daley spoke up for the director, stating “geez, one mistake out of hundreds.” That same logic should have been applied to your case. I understand how most Black folks feel about dogs. Many of our ancestors were bitten by attack dogs for the police department. Thousands are spent on commercials promoting dog care. Planes accommodate dogs better than people. Let a weight challenged person enter a plane. To a large populace dogs are more appreciated than people. I can oftentimes see and understand that. Last winter was cold as hell. Some cats had kittens under my house. I spent two entire days calling every organization in the book and on the internet. No one came from the city or the state. PAWS was the worst. Bottom line the kittens died. This society is so backwards. Michael Vick, get your money, lose those trick ass niccas you called friends and get a cat.
- Ima AND THEN DERE IS . . . It’s Saturday, July 10, 2010. I was over some friends’ house trying to play cards. Got bored and left. 11:00 pm. What you see on the street will make you want to run home and lock the doors. It’s a jungle. I don’t know what has happened in the last ten years but these streets need cleaning. I was driving an old Caddy. Young women double parked looking at you like you better not hit my car. Black men just standing in the street like there are no cars. Get insurance people. I saw two small children, maybe 8 years old sitting on and playng with a parked motorcycle. I thought that I was one of few people that read the newspaper like a book. You need to be high just to digest some of this stuff. I see why lyrics are written describing females in a negative light. Some of them are. Why does a female need to hang with a group of men for? BUSINESS Wall Street Reform: A Genuine People’s Victory By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer Last week’s media hype on Ms. Shirley Sherrod and the Department of Agriculture obliterated what should have been a triumphant moment for the nation: the President’s signing of the historic Dodd-Frank bill and the creation of a new bureau dedicated to consumer protection. As with all major legislation, a signing ceremony still occurred; but its significance was
Speaking on behalf of the Center for Responsible Lending, President Mike Calhoun said, “The current economic meltdown has been a nightmare for American families and a recurrence would be a disaster for our nation. The recently passed financial reform legislation puts in place key reforms that help create a brighter future, one in which our financial system flourishes. People will get loans they can afford to repay, and principles of fairness and value in financial products will trump easy money
and self-enrichment.” A few examples of the news protections are: Landmark consumer protection – An independent agency will be authorized to prevent the tricks and traps related to mortgages, payday loans and checking accounts. Credit cards and mortgages will offer terms in language easily understood; predatory lending will be prohibited; and banks will not be able to charge businesses hefty fees for debit-card purchases, among other consumer protections we expect the agency to put
into place. Office of Minority and Women Inclusion – This new office will ensure equal employment opportunity and racial, ethnic and gender diversity. It will also work to increase the participation of minority-owned and women-owned businesses in the programs and contracts of each agency; and develop standards within each agency to assess diversity policies and practices in each federal financial agency, the 12 regional banks of the Federal Reserve, and the Fed Board of Governors.
Mortgage reforms – Kickbacks for steering consumers into high rate loans when they qualify for lower rates will be banned. The legislation explicitly prohibits abusive loan fees and penalties for prepaying your loan early. And for the first time for all loans, lenders will no longer make loans that borrowers cannot repay. Preventing taxpayer bailouts – Your hard-earned money will not be used to rescue companies that engaged in risky practices. With this legislation, one regulator will (Continued on page 16)
Charlene Crowell dwarfed by the tabloid effects of the Sherrod incident. It took more than a year of federal deliberations to develop a bill that both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives could agree to support. From the outset, it seemed that the deep pockets of Wall Street bankers and their army of lobbyists would overwhelm a grassroots coalition of consumer groups, civil rights organizations, clergy, and unions in a modern day David and Goliath saga. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, in 2009 alone, $465 million was spent by the financial industry on lobbying Washington. That expenditure translates into $1.4 million a day and includes 1,726 registered federal lobbyists paid to woo 100 U.S. Senators and 455 Members of Congress. But in the end, little David’s people won – the everyday people who know what it means to be snookered financially – and gained a valuable governmental entity to fight predatory lending’s multiple forms. Commenting on the new law, President Obama said, “The Wall Street reform bill represents the strongest consumer financial protections in history. You have a stake in it if you’ve ever been treated unfairly by a credit card company, misled by pages and pages of fine print or ended up paying fees and penalties you’ve never heard of before.” The Chicago Crusader

Businessmen purchase home in Auburn-Gresham community Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago assists with home purchase Auburn-Gresham, a community on Chicago’s South Side, touts itself as one of Chicago’s “best kept secrets.” The community boasts a strong housing stock of brick bungalows and two-flats, several new housing developments, active neighborhood organizations and block clubs, Auburn Lakes (three fishing lagoons), and a recent surge in new commercial development, including Walgreen’s, CVS, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Food 4 Less, BJ’s Market and Potbelly’s restaurants, Inner City Entertainment (a 14-screen movie theatre) and Bally’s Total Fitness. Now, Auburn Gresham has something else about which to boast — new homeowners. In a housing market and community where the number of foreclosures continues to outpace the number of home purchases, businessmen Anthony McGuire and Gregory Burbage recently purchased the McGuire family’s two-flat on south May Street. “I grew up in this community,
right on the first floor of this building,” say McGuire, whose mother still resides in that first floor unit of the two flat he and his partner Burbage recently purchased. “I graduated from Calumet High School and then left the city for a while.” When McGuire returned, he and Burbage moved to Rogers Park. They made the decision to purchase Anthony’s childhood home when the building they were living in was put up for sale. “We’re self employed and didn’t want to pay the high rents they were asking in Rogers Park,” says McGuire. “Also, my mother has Alzheimer’s and we wanted to keep her in her space.” McGuire and Burbage, own a commercial cleaning service located in the Washington Park neighborhood. Burbage had been passing by Neighborhood Housing Services Auburn Gresham/Englewood office practically every day. “I wasn’t familiar with them, but after getting frustrated working with a couple of the major lenders, I decided to stop in and see what services they provided,” says Burbage. ENTERTAINMENT The Black Women’s Expo offers new components at McCormick Place Saturday and Sunday, August 7-8, 2010 The Black Women’s Expo, the number one national destination event for the summer, returns to Chicago on Saturday and Sunday, August 78, 2010 at McCormick Place, North Building, Hall C1. Presented by State Farm, the two-day exposition features empowering seminars, insightful workshops, enlightening speakers, bestselling authors, a variety of sponsored exhibits and pavilions, as well as live entertainment that will engage, entertain, and inform all visitors. “There is absolutely something for everyone at The Black Women’s Expo 2010,” said Merry Green, founder and executive producer of the popular event now celebrating its 17th consecutive year. With a primary emphasis on the concerns and aspirations of African American women, the Expo also includes events of interest for the entire family and this year is no exception. “The Black Women’s Expo is the perfect marketplace for small to mid-sized businesses and major corporations to reach the all important African American female consumer. In today’s distressed economy, it’s almost an imperative for companies to reach out and touch their valued consumers at a grassroots level to expose them to their products
and services. The Expo continues to provide that opportunity in an attractive marketplace setting,” Green stated. New pavilions this year include the following: Senior Lifestyle Pavilion Beauty Bar Pavilion Other popular activity centers slated to return include: Literary Café Kidz Korner Health and Wellness Pavilion To assist those attendees seeking full or part-time employment, the Expo is sponsoring a Job Fair that will present some of the city’s most respected employers in a variety of industries. In addition to providing preliminary interviews, employer sponsors will host seminars in the areas of image consulting, resume writing, and reinventing oneself in a changing job market. Attendees are encouraged to bring copies of their resumes for review. Every year, the Expo presents a youth-oriented summit to stimulate dialogue and address issues of concern to youth. This year’s summit is titled Violence Prevention Summit for Girls. Many local non-profit organizations as well as city, county, and state agencies will also participate in the Expo and present their services and products to consumers. Information will be available on a wide range of subjects to assist consumers in their daily lives. Exploring the dynamics of male/female relationships has proven to be one of the most popular seminar series in the Expo’s history. This year will be no exception as Emilie McKendall, host of Emilie and Friends on WVON Radio, moderates part 2 of No More Drama: Real Talk From Real Men About Life and Love. Emilie McKendall presented part 1 of this seminar in May at a local venue with six prominent males on the panel. The female response was overwhelming. Part 2 promises to be more interactive, more dynamic, and more insightful. Live entertainment will be presented on several stages throughout the Expo. Rapper MC Lyte will move from her broadcast booth to the performance stage and gospel powerhouse Kim Burrell who will host the Gospel Talent Search finals will also entertain the audience. Popular businesswoman and radio/television personality Catherine (Cathy) L. Hughes – founder, chairman, and secretary of Radio One – will deliver the keynote address during The Phenomenal Woman Awards Gala. The awards program continues its legacy of honoring ten Chicago area women for contributions in their specific fields of endeavor and for their community involvement. The Phenomenal Woman Awards will be presented during the annual Gala on Friday, August 6, in the Hyatt Regency Hotel’s Crystal Ballroom beginning at 6:30 p.m. For additional information on The Black Women’s Expo, including schedules for seminars and performances, visit www.theblackwomensexpo.com or call 312-243-3554. 12

design, the direction, and the choreography are blowing audiences away. The reviews for this show have been fabulous,” said Mayes. AIDA tells the story of a highranking Egyptian soldier, engaged to the Pharaoh’s daughter and next in line for the throne, who falls in love with the Nubian slave Aida. When he discovers that she is the daughter of the King of Nubia, each is forced to choose between love for country and love for each other. With a driving pop-rock score by Elton John, the story challenges audiences to consider the question: “What would you sacrifice for eternal love?” In its first Chicago production since the national tour, Bailiwick Chicago’s newly envisioned production features stunning choreography by the modern dance company Deeply Rooted Dance Theater (www.deeplyrootedproductions.or g), a six-piece band, and a cast of 20 talented actors, singers, and dancers. Pasadena Symphony schedules 2010-2011 season James DePreist engaged as artistic advisor Five guest conductors for the Pasadena (California) Symphony’s 2010-2011 season have been announced to replace long-time artistic director Jorge Mester whose contract was terminated in May after 25 years, reportedly when negotiations over a salary cut fell apart. Mester has not commented further on the reasons for his sudden departure from the financially strapped orchestra after announcing it at the season’s final concert. Paul Jan Zdunek, chief executive officer of the Pasadena Symphony and POPS orchestras, said the symphony repertoire had already been set and will not be changed. “We’ve been working with (new artistic advisor) James DePreist for the last few weeks and came up with a list of conductors,” Zdunek said last Friday. DePreist, a veteran conductor and director of conducting and orchestral studies at the Juilliard School (and nephew of the late internationally-celebrated con-
tralto, Marian Anderson), will conduct the symphony at its new Ambassador Auditorium venue on opening night October 23. “The symphony will continue to use guest conductors at this time, Zdunek said, and they are already working with DePreist on the 2011-2012 lineup.” DePreist, who was hired as an independent contractor in early June, is scheduled to arrive in Pasadena in August to meet with the Orchestra and symphony constituents. Chicago teens focus on the Arts to thwart violence Grammy Award winner Darius Brooks shares his gift of music with youth Despite the increase in violent crimes in Chicago’s streets, some teens are choosing the performing arts as a means of refuge. SDM Foundation for the Arts, the notfor-profit organization of Grammy,
Stellar, and Dove Award winner Darius Brooks, is holding its third annual teen arts and enrichment camp - Jam Session. The weeklong camp takes place August 9-13 at Grace Central in Bellwood, Illinois for teens 13 -18 years of age. This year the program has expanded to include dance and spoken word. Students, from through-
out the Chicagoland area, will participate in a combination of dance, music, spoken word and personal skills building workshops, including vocal training, dance techniques, college resources, careers in music and dance, and master classes conducted by some of the best in their respective industries. The end of the camp session features a finale

Her office was also able to provide close to $2.2 million to homeowners through Neighborhood Housing Services lending arm, Neighborhood Lending Services (NLS), the only state licensed, non-profit mortgage lending corporation in the State of Illinois. In addition to assisting with purchase and repair loans, Moore’s office also provides counseling and workshops for new homeowners and for homeowners facing or in danger of facing foreclosure. “One of the most important things for homeowners experiencing difficulty paying their mortgage is to remember help is available,” states Moore. “Most homeowners don’t know the foreclosure process takes between 12-15 months from the time they miss their first payment. Therefore, they have time to find a solution to avoid foreclosure.” Weekly Foreclosure Prevention Workshops are held at Moore’s office, located at 449 W. 79th Street, every Thursday at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
concert for family and friends. “Today, I still believe that music and the arts can hold the key to saving many of our young people by showing them a path to a better and brighter future. Growing up on the west side of Chicago with fourteen sisters and brothers, my anti-violence initiative was my love for music. I spent most of my time singing and playing the piano. My urgency to develop and continually expand this program was sparked by the growing number of young people killed by violent crimes in Chicago every year. Our youth need motivation, support, and an opportunity to believe in themselves,” says Brooks. The five-day arts camp will be in session from 9:00 am - 4:45 pm, daily and include master sessions and lectures by noted industry professionals throughout the week. The final day of camp (Friday, August 13) will culminate in an evening concert featuring Darius Brooks and SDM Jam Session’s talented youth. The concert will be preceded by a reception for parents, friends, sponsors and invited
guests. This year, Brooks hopes to identify a minimum of 75 students and is targeting teens from some of Chicago’s most distressed neighborhoods. The Foundation’s goal is to also make available year-round monthly activities for those who begin this summer, providing the ongoing one-on-one support and mentoring that is so important as they move through school. SDM is a not-for-profit foundation aimed at nurturing, mentoring, and training individuals who are interested in pursuing careers in the performing arts. SDM identifies and develops young talented artists (including, but not limited to dancers, vocalists and musicians) from the Chicago area. The foundation’s ultimate goal is to provide educational enhancement programs through annual scholarships, career fairs, college fairs, and informational support to all students interested in the performing arts. Particularly gratifying was the fact they were purchasing the home in which Mr. McGuire grew up. “As businessmen, they certainly had options of where they could purchase,” continues Moore. “The fact they wanted to return to this community was inspiring and shows the work we are doing with our partners is helping to bring prominent residents back into the community. Our partnerships help to stabilize the community and crucial to community stabilization is occupied, well-maintained housing stock. My office assists homeowners and potential homeowners to ensure Auburn-Gresham remains a safe, viable community.” Moore says her office also provides home repair loans to qualifying homeowners and, “unfortunately, over the last few years, has been providing more foreclosure prevention services than home purchase and/or repair loans,” due to the economy. “I’d prefer to be able to focus on creating new homeowners like Mr. McGuire and Mr. Burbage or helping homeowners improve their property, rather than on the huge number of foreclosures in the community,” says Moore, adding that her office gets a great sense of fulfillment every time they are able to help a homeowner stay in their

the Soulslate. Reverend Al Sampson organized the soul slate as an alternative political voter’s guide for the African American community over 20 years ago. It has been very influential in the successful elections of many African American political candidates. Some notables included Judge Pamela Hill Veal of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Alderwoman Carrie Austin, alderwoman and candidate for president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners Toni Preckwinkle and WVON radio executive Terry Bishop. Also in attendance former WBBM news anchorman John Davis and Attorney Marvin Gray, a recent can-

The highlight of the evening was the keynote speech by the right Reverend Al Sharpton, who regaled the audience with stories of his days on tour with the Godfather of Soul James Brown. His decision to advocate on behalf of poor African Americans and to run for president of the United States brought rousing applause from the audience. De La Salle Institute proudly announces that freshman Marcus Carter was chosen the Meteor of the Month for May at its Institute Campus for Young Men. In a joint initiative between the school’s Campus Ministry and its City of De La Salle student government, nominations are received from faculty and staff highlighting students who are motivated and enthusiastic about the school’s La Sallian mission inside and outside of the classroom. Specifically, nominees are students who stand out among their peers by having demonstrated one or more of the La Sallian Principles of Faith, Community, Service, Social Justice and/or Association. De La Salle congratulates Carter,
a resident of Chicago’s Wrightwood community, on his achievements and wishes him every future success.
