NOI’s crime fighting getting mixed reactions By J. Coyden Palmer Three weeks after the Nation of Islam sent dozens of men into some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods to help quell violence, the reaction to their presence has been mixed from organizations that have been on the front lines of fighting crime in Chicago for years. Organizations like Ceasefire and longtime independent community activist Andrew Holmes welcome the NOI presence. But other organizations, like the Willie Williams Youth Foundation and dozens of residents were not impressed. For two Mondays in a row, Nation of Islam men dressed in their traditional suits and bow ties, dispersed throughout violence-plagued Chicago neighborhoods — first in Auburn-Gresham, then South Shore. They formed a human wall of protection and according to Chicago police there were no incidents of violence in those areas on that day. They also passed out copies of the Nation of Islam’s newspaper, “The Final Call,” and DVDs titled, “Justifiable Homicide: Black Youth in Peril.” They also went door to door and spoke with residents, although some did not open their door, many spoke with NOI members through the window. Willie Williams Jr. lost his son Willie Williams III to a senseless act of violence outside a local movie theatre on April 1, 2006. Since then he has been committed

to action against violence in Chicago. He started a youth foundation that bears his son’s name. Recently, Williams had to have both of his kidneys replaced after doctors

discovered cancer. Now cancer free, he is anxious to get back to the work of running the foundation, but has serious reservations about Farrakhan’s role in stopping vi-

Crusader story draws attention to Izola White By Wendell Hutson A Black businessman, after reading a recent Crusader story about a former Black restaurateur, moved quickly to help the owner who is struggling financially. “I just read about Izola White in the Chicago Crusader and did not know it had gotten to the point that she would have to move out her home and into a nursing home. We (Izola and I) go back over 50 years and I cannot just sit back and do nothing,” Spencer Leak Sr. told the Crusader after reading a July 19 story about White’s pending move to a nursing home due to finances. White, an 89 year-old businesswoman, who founded the legendary Izola’s restaurant at 422 E. 79th St. in 1940, has fallen on hard times. Her restaurant closed March 2011 after being mismanaged while she was away sick. And now, White, who lives off $1,100 a month in social security income, may lose her South Side home,

Local religious leaders protest assault weapons access About 50 members of the clergy representing various denominations came together this week at New Mt. Pilgrim MB church to call for a ban on assault weapons. They also offered condolences to local Sikh leader Dr. Balwant Singh Hansra, in connection with the murders recently at a Wisconsin Sikh temple. The faith leaders said they want the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 re-instated. “Churches, mosques and synagogues are being challenged to join this coalition of religious leaders in launching a petition to revive the ban on assault weapons,” said Hansra, co-founder of the Sikh Religious Society of Metropolitan Chicago. The Rev. Stanley Davis, co-executive director of the Council for Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago, said the new group will be known as the Chicago Clergy Against Violence. “Just recently here in Chicago, we experienced the tragic death of Baby Heaven Sutton. Then there was the Colorado Massacre, followed by the domestic terrorism at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin. As the moral conscious of America, it’s important that we act now!” said Ira Acree of the Leaders’ Network. Dr. Larry Greenfield of Protestants of the Common Good said,

“We seek to put our faith into practice by comforting the Sikh community in the sorrow we share with them in the violence they have recently experienced.” No date was set for the clerics’ next meeting.

& Sons Funeral Homes, 7838 S. Cottage Grove Ave., added that he would have not known about White had it not been for the Crusader. “Thank God for the Crusader. It’s good to know someone is keeping up with our Black businesses,” he said. “I want to do what I can to help her and I am encouraging everyone, especially our Black businesses, to do the same.” Two fundraisers are scheduled from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on September 8 and 9 at her former legendary restaurant Izola’s. DeWayne Mason, White’s legal guardian, said for a $250 minimum donation guests can expect dinner, a live jazz band, picture auction, raffle, and guest speakers. Last September, a one-day fundraiser was held at her home and raised $12,000 although $35,000 was needed at that time to re-open the restaurant. “At this point, my goal is to keep her (White) in her home and away from a nursing home. As far as re-opening the restaurant, that would take a small miracle, but I know with God’s help

miracles do happen,” Mason said. “It’s no secret that I am upset that no Black business owner stepped up sooner to assist her despite many of them eating at her restaurant (for free) during its heydays. I am glad to see Spencer Leak taking the lead and hope other Black businesses will follow suit.” Mason added that if anyone wants to make a donation, but is not able to attend the fundraisers they can contact him directly at 773-936-1455 or friendsforizola@comcast.net. Donations can also be mailed to Izola White, P.O. Box 198717, Chicago, IL 60619. And all checks should be made payable to “The Estate of Izola White.” But money is not all that is needed. “I understand that not everyone can donate financially, but can support us with in-kind services like volunteering, food donations or other services,” Mason explained. “And even if a person cannot make the minimum $250 donation, they can still come and give what they can because she needs it. This is not the first time that a

Crusader story brought attention to a needy cause. Last August the Crusader ran a story about Robert McGaha, a retired, Chicago police officer, who is paralyzed due to a stroke. He was struggling to raise the necessary $10,000 needed to have an elevator-lift built outside his south suburban home. A lift would allow McGaha to be able to leave his home and sit in the backyard to see the sun and get some fresh air, according to Barbara Wright, his fiancée. At the time he had not received any assistance from the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Police Memorial Foundation or the Fraternal Order of Police, a union that represents Chicago police officers. “We were unaware of Mr. McGaha’s condition, but now that it has been brought to our attention, we plan to help him as much as we can,” Michael Shields, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said in an August 2011 interview. “Thank you Chicago Crusader for bringing this to our attention.” To date, McGaha still needs $2,000 to have a lift built.

Founder of “Chicago Sound” dies at the age of 77 By J. Coyden Palmer The man credited with being the architect of the “Chicago Sound” style of music has died. Carl H. Davis Sr. passed away Aug. 9 in Summerville, South Carolina from pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. The memorial services for Mr. Davis will be Saturday, August 18 at noon with a prepast at 11:00 a.m. The location will be at Christian Life Center, 6363 West 183rd Street, Tinley Park, IL 60477 (The corner of 183rd St. and Ridgeland Ave). The burial will be private. Before there was a R. Kelly or Kanye West producing R&B songs in Chicago, Davis made hit songs for musicians like The ChiLites, Jackie Wilson and Gene Chandler. His ability to use peppy, brassy arrangements and form danceable, upbeat songs with a Latin tinge is what gave his work an original sound. He was one of the first African Americans to create songs that had a crossover appeal in the 1960’s and 70’s when America was still dealing with racial strife from the Civil Rights Movement. Born in the Woodlawn community, Davis would produce 20 Top

Ten Albums for the Chi-Lites and in 1976 formed his own label, Chi-Sound records. The label served as the R&B side whereas Chess Records recorded local Black blues artists. Chi-Sound came back into existence in January of 2007 after a long dormant period. Davis was responsible for a number of artists obtaining gold records through his unequaled quality in production, hearing ability and his expertise relating to an artist on how a story should be told. Mr. Davis said: “a song is just a story and your audience must be able to believe the story before they buy your song.” In the mid-60s, Davis took over creative control of Brunswick Records, which at the time was a subsidiary of Decca Records. During this time he oversaw many hits for the label, in addition to another label he founded Dakar Records. When Brunswick/Dakar folded in 1974, Davis started ChiSound Records. Many consider Davis’ crowning achievement a song he produced for The Dells “Stay in my Corner.” But the more popular “Have You Seen Her?” was sampled heavily for rapper M.C. Hammer’s re-

Carl H. Davis Sr. make. Jay Z and Beyonce’s popular hit “Crazy in Love” was sampled from Mr. Davis’ song “Are you My Woman?” Davis started out in radio as a disc jockey. He began his radio career typing play lists for popular Chicago disc jockey Al Benson on WGES Radio in 1955. He quickly earned a reputation as a “hitpicker.” His success allowed him to join the marketing department of

Arnold Distributors. In the early 1960s, Davis managed the Nat label and had a minor hit with “Nite Owl” by the DuKays. In 1962, he became a producer for Okeh Records. There, Davis discovered Chandler and produced the “Duke of Earl” in 1962 and Major Lance’s “Monkey Time” in 1963. Through his work, Davis created a Chicago sound with upbeat arrangements backed by musicians

and arrangers like Johnny Pate and Sonny Sanders. A partnership with Curtis Mayfield resulted in hits for Major Lance, Billy Butler (Jerry’s brother) and Walter Jackson. Davis was then hired by Brunswick Records where he produced Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher” and Barbara Acklin’s “Love Makes A Woman.” After forming Atlantic’s Dakar Records, he produced the Chi-Lites and Tyrone Davis’ “Turn Back the Hands of Time” and “Can I Change My Mind.” Before he got into the music business, Davis attended Englewood High School and later earned his GED in 1954. He also served in the United States Air Force. He earned an associates degree from Cortez College of Business in 1957. Last year, Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared July 20th Carl Davis Day. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife Dedra Davis, their children; Pamela Davis, Carl H. Davis II, Trey Davis, Julio Davis, Kelli Morris, Carleen Davis and Jaime Davis, as well as one brother, George Davis, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

NOI and said they can play an important role in reducing violence. He disagreed with Williams’ assessment. “I applaud Minister Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam for stepping into the fray and trying to stop the violence that is besieging entire communities. We need all hands on deck,” Hardiman said. “Everybody needs to play a role because a lot of organizations cannot reach everybody. The Nation of Islam may be able to reach a certain segment of the population. We need Black leaders to champion the cause right now.” Hardiman said Ceasefire is only able to work in about a third of the areas where they are needed. He also said all of the community organizations have a different agenda on how to address the issue, which at times can be counterproductive. Hardiman is hoping Farrakhan’s depth of knowledge on the history of African American people will help educate “the cowards who are out here killing children” in Chicago’s neighborhoods. “There is an internal fight that these young brothers don’t really understand. We have to bring them the right information to help them liberate their minds,” Hardiman said. “It’s the mindset that has to change. Black youth are killing each other in record

have to provide positive activities for youth. “You have to start by going to the gang members on their turf and engaging in constructive conversation with them,” Williams said. “You can’t just come in and pass out literature and hope the presence of your celebrity will bring about a change. I’m so tired of organizations and people saying that if they had a certain amount of money they would do this or that; it’s a lot of people out here with resources who are just flaunting it.” Much of the consternation that Williams and other critics have with the NOI is they have yet to lay out a transparent long-term plan, which they say is vital to any program’s success. The NOI has not released to the media what their plans are either and Farrakhan would not take questions from the press even when he was out on the streets with his followers last month. The lack of information of the NOI’s plans add to the organization’s mystery, but also turns off many people who are suspicious of their motives. “What I saw them doing was passing out literature about the Nation and engaging in mostly small talk with people,” said Dave Jackson, who lives in the

South Shore community, the second neighborhood NOI members visited earlier this month. “I didn’t hear any concrete solutions to the problems. I didn’t hear or see them talking about implementing a security plan for these neighborhoods. They were mostly talking to people about how Black people need to unify, learn their history and have love for one another. I think that’s good and all, but a rallying message is not what we need right now. So to me it seemed like they were just trying to recruit people to the Nation.” Tio Hardiman, the Illinois director for Ceasefire welcomes the

numbers because they do not know who they are and what they represent. Everything that they represent is false because nobody is winning in regards to how they have been raised or how they have been taught. Many of them have been taught the wrong information.” Holmes, who works closely with the police department and residents of the community as an unofficial conduit, also praised Farrakhan’s efforts. He said he has yet to be contacted by anyone from the Nation about collaborating on events to stop the violence, but said he believes unifying all of the community organizations will be an important step. He also said the way members of the Nation address Black men on the street in a dignified, respectful way goes a long way. But Holmes said the most powerful weapon the community has is good parenting because then there is no need for people to have to be linked to any specific organization. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy support the NOI’s efforts. McCarthy said faith-based organizations can play an important role in reducing crime in Chicago. Mayor Emanuel had this to say regarding the issue: Saturday, August 18, 2012

“They have decided, the Nation of Islam, to help protect [the] community and that’s an important ingredient like all the other aspects of protecting a neighborhood,” Emanuel said. “You cannot get there on just one piece of an anti-crime strategy.” This is not the first time the NOI has attempted to use its resources to quell violence in the Black community. In the 1990’s the Nation of Islam Security Agency Inc. was awarded a $4.3 million contract to patrol 16 public housing units in Baltimore, Maryland. The same agency was also awarded contracts in 10 other U.S. cities, including Chicago, by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Those contracts came under heavy congressional scrutiny and eventually HUD canceled them for “contract bidding irregularities” and questions about how the NOI Security Agency won the bid. It also faced scrutiny from federal agencies for racial and gender preference in hiring and from the IRS for failure to withhold taxes from employees. However HUD officials maintained the cancellation was not based on job performance, which had great reviews in Washington D.C. public housing, but not so good reviews in other cities, according to HUD. 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL WAS BELAFONTE’S CRITICISM OF JAY Z AND BEYONCÉ WARRANTED? Recently, renowned singer and civil rights activist, Harry Belafonte, criticized Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z for allegedly turning their backs on “social responsibility.” Apparently, Belafonte might have jumped the gun, since it is true that the couple have given to charities. For example, according to an online article by Michael Izzo titled “Beyoncé Fights Back After Harry Belafonte Blasts Her For Not Doing ‘Social Good’,” Beyoncé co-founded The Survivor Foundation, a multi-purpose community outreach facility in downtown Houston; donated 100K in 2008 to the Gulf Coast Ike Relief Fund to aid Texas victims of Hurricane Ike; and performed in MTV’s Hope For Haiti Now! Benefit while making a generous monetary donation. And, in an online article by Cyrus Langhorne entitled “Activist Harry Belafonte’s JayZ & Beyoncé ‘Social Responsibility’ Remarks Disputed, Try Acknowledging What This Couple Has Done,” Jay-Z performed in concerts at Carnegie Hall which benefitted the United Way, and has created the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation, which oversees a toy drive in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects. They also organized toy drives to benefit the LGBT Service Center, The Children’s Hospital at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, and the Calvary Baptist Church. In addition, Beyoncé has been a vocal supporter of amfAR, which provides funds for AIDS research, and donated her entire salary from the movie “Cadillac Records” to Phoenix House, a drug and rehabilitation clinic. She is also a spokeswoman for Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS). The question is this: how much should “celebrities” give back for it to be considered relevant? Certainly, Belafonte was in his right to point out something that he thought needed to be addressed. His actual statement to The Hollywood Reporter was, “I think that one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities. But they have turned their back on social responsibility. That goes for Jay-Z and Beyoncé, for example. Give me Bruce Springsteen and now you’re talking. I really think he is Black.” Apparently, Belafonte expects more from Beyoncé and Jay-Z. It is true that the Black community is very needy, and it is true that a lot of people can benefit from the largesse of those who happen to have financial success. But think on this for a moment: the couple worked very hard for their money and deserves to spend it in whatever way they see fit. And if we can demand bounty from them, what about everyone else in the Black community? Shouldn’t EVERYONE give back, no matter how much money a person earns? In spirit Belafonte is correct; in theory, those with more should give more. But it shouldn’t feel like extortion. People should give what they feel is appropriate, after all, charity starts at home, and both Jay-Z and Beyoncé have families that they have to help support. When all is said and done, probably the best thing to come out of Belafonte’s comments is a heightened awareness among other celebrity Blacks, including Beyoncé and Jay-Z, to step up their philanthropic game. That would be a welcome outcome.

Last week it suddenly dawned on me how lucky I am to be a Chicago Crusader subscriber. I was online looking for a story in one of the local mainstream papers. As I moved throughout their Web site it seemed everything written about our community had to do with killings – everything. Honestly, it was very depressing. The Chicago of today is not the Chicago I grew up in. I remember when we had to search the newspaper if we thought someone had been shot. Today that is far from the case –violence of every kind is all over the paper. But when I read the Crusader I find out what is going on in the community. The Crusader does not bombard me with stories about the young brothers getting killed, even though like many of these victims, the Crusader is right in the hood. I applaud the Crusader for constantly reminding people that there is something going on in the Black community besides shootings and other forms of violence. Maybe one day I will be able to come down and shake the hands of the women and men who make the Crusader happen every week. I certainly wish other pa-

The preachers just don’t get it Dear Editor: The older I get the more difficult time I have understanding preachers in our community. I know most, if not all of them, really want to do good. I know many of them want to make a difference in the community and do so sooner rather than later. What is difficult to understand though is why they are falling over one another in trying to address the violence in the city. For real, last week I read three accounts of what preachers were doing. And what the upshot was three different preachers holding three different vigils at three locations. I am not sure any of them drew more than 100 people. It stands to reason that if they all are trying to call attention to the same thing, they could combine resources and have all three

rallies/vigils at one time, at one place. Common sense says they would draw more people than three splintered events. A lot of us are glad someone is doing something to address this problem, but it certainly seems the preachers could do so in a more coordinated way. Maybe it is ego that won’t let Preacher A bring his ideas to Preacher B and they meet with Preacher C to coordinate a major (Continued on page 13)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Notes from Trinidad and Tobago By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist I was very curious when the speaking invitation arrived from the Emancipation Support Committee based in Trinidad and Tobago. They asked if I would speak at their 12th Annual Trade and Investment Symposium. Mel Foote, president/CEO of the Constituency for Africa, soon contacted me and encouraged me to participate at this event as he has been going for over ten years. That recommendation was enough for me so off we (myself, two VP’s and a board member from the National Black Chamber of Commerce) went to Trinidad and Tobago – it was our maiden voyage. The hospitality of the people of “TT” is genuine and enjoyable. We were met coming off our plane by an executive of the Airport Authority. She rushed us through customs and took us to our driver. We arrived at the Trinidad Hilton Hotel and Conference Center. The accommodations were just beautiful and I am still missing the wonderful cuisine served in the hotel restaurant. The general manager spent time with us and our waiter gave us the best service we ever had.

Harry C. Alford We learned quickly that “TT” was different than the rest of the Caribbean. They don’t have a big dependence on tourism. They are, in fact, the “Industrial Hub of the Caribbean.” Energy (natural gas, oil and related products) is their biggest industry. Being only seven miles from the coast of oil giant Venezuela, it is taking advantage of the same shale (underground reserves of gas and oil). The nation is totally self-sufficient on its energy needs and ex-

ports the vast majority of what they produce. Unlike many African nations who have oil and gas but no refineries, this nation controls the finished product. Thus, there is a significant amount of wealth among the residents. They are a very educated population with many engineers and post graduate degrees. Trinidad has a population of 1.3 million and Tobago has a little over one hundred thousand. If you want business, you go to Trinidad. If you want beaches, you go to Tobago. The downtown skyline reminds me of San Diego. There are two stock exchanges in the nation and business seems to be very brisk. The local media was very excited about our presence. We did two television interviews along with two radio interviews and a flattering article about my speech in the local newspaper. The newspaper article hit the internet wire services. Kafra Kambon is the president/CEO of the Emancipation Support Committee and founder of the Trade and Investment Symposium. This brother is a stone believer in the power of the Pan African Diaspora. He is known to many throughout Africa, Caribbean and

South America. Also, he is a legend to Pan Africans in the United States. He has pledged to start a local Black chamber in this progressive nation and I will nominate him for our Board of Directors this year. The people are empowered by their past. Unlike the United States, they make a very big celebration out of their emancipation – August 1, 1834. What we have been doing on our emancipation day, January 1, 1863, is party for the recognition of New Year’s Day. Listen Black America; it is time for us to honor our end to slavery by officially recognizing and celebrating our Emancipation Day. January 1, 2013, will mark 150 years since we were formally released from slavery. Let’s have Emancipation Day celebrations in every city and town in our nation. We can’t truly embrace our heritage without noting one of the most important days. As Mel Foote noted, “The people look more African than any place in Africa”. They were so beautiful during the ceremonies dressed in elegant African designs; dancing to African drumbeats and eating food from old African recipes. We should do the same. The Emancipation Support Committee website is www.-

panafricanfestival.org. Go there for ideas in having your own local celebration. We had the opportunity to personally meet the President of Nigeria who came to the ceremonies. The Honorable Goodluck Jonathan is very articulate and a fantastic speaker. Shaking his hand twice was an honor for me. We enjoyed a very elaborate luncheon at the residence of the Prime Minister, the Honorable Kamla Persad-Bissessar. She too is an elegant speaker and exudes pride for her nation and people. I encourage all of you to go and see this progressive nation. Entrepreneurs should consider the opportunities there. Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll of Florida knows. She is taking 27 Floridian business owners to the nation on a formal Trade Mission. After all, Trinidad is her birth place. Yes, the people are proud, prosperous and connected with the Diaspora. Therefore, they are blessed. We can’t wait to go back. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Paul Ryan: The Most Conservative Congressman picked for VP in 100 Years By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist After studying the records of vice presidential candidates for more than a century, Nate Silver wrote in Saturday’s New York Times that Paul Ryan, the person Mitt Romney selected to be his vice presidential running mate, is “as conservative as Representative Michele Bachmann, the controversial congresswoman of Minnesota… Mr. Ryan is the most conservative Republican member of Congress to be picked for the vice-presidential slot since at least 1900. He is also more conservative than any Democratic nominee was liberal, meaning that he is the furthest from the center.” As chairman of the House Budget Committee, the Wisconsin Republican has served as the chief architect of the GOP’s budget priorities. Detailed analysis of Ryan’s budget plan show him to be what Jesse Jackson often called on the presidential campaign trail in 1984: a “Reverse Robin Hood” – one who likes to take from the poor to give to the rich. That’s exactly the point documented by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: “…These regressive new tax cuts would come on top of the Bush tax cuts, which also were costly and provided disproporThe Chicago Crusader

tionate gains to the highest-income households. Combined, the Bush and Ryan tax cuts would provide an annual windfall of nearly $400,000 apiece, on average, to people with incomes over $1 million.” It added, “By combining large budget cuts (and tax increases) that disproportionately harm lower-income Americans with big tax cuts that disproportionately help those at the top of the income scale, the Ryan budget would significantly worsen inequality and increase poverty and hardship (and reduce opportunity as well, through deep cuts in programs such as Pell Grants to help low-income students afford college).” Even William Gale, who served as a senior staff economist for the Council of Economic Advisers under President George H.W. Bush, agrees. “At a time when our country faces a daunting fiscal challenge, Ryan asks nothing of the wealthiest Americans. His budget proposal would simultaneously cut tax rates for the rich and corporations while slashing programs for the poor and elderly: he would shift many federal low-income assistance programs to state governments and would transform Medicare into a premium support system that will shift health care costs to seniors if health care inflation cannot be control-

George E. Curry led,” said Gale, now co-director of the Tax Policy Center. A Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis of Ryan’s 2013 budget plan found that it “would get at least 62 percent of its $5.3 trillion in nondefense budget cuts over ten years (relative to a continuation of current policies) from programs that serve people of limited means.” It explained, “Ryan’s cuts from programs benefiting low-income earners include “$2.4 trillion in reductions from Medicaid and other health care for people with low or moderate incomes” and “$134 bil-

lion in cuts to SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program.” In addition, Ryan would cut at least $463 billion from “mandatory programs serving lowincome Americans (other than Medicaid and SNAP)” and “at least $291 billion in cuts in low-income discretionary programs.” Like his running mate, Ryan favors repealing President Obama’s signature Affordable Care Act. And what he proposes as a cure for America’s ailing health care system is worse than the illness. “Ryan budget would divide our health system into a distinct two tiers: those who could afford the care they need would get it; many others would not,” said Edwin Park, vice president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Referring to Ryan, the former White House official said, “He would convert Medicare into a voucher to buy private insurance or traditional Medicare, and cap Medicare financing for the vouchers at levels that wouldn’t keep pace with health costs. By 2050, the Congressional Budget Office says, federal funding for a 67-year-old beneficiary’s health costs would be 35 percent to 42 percent lower than under current law. With vouchers growing more inadequate over time, beneficiaries would face much higher premiums and costsharing. Some would become Saturday, August 18, 2012

uninsured; others would forgo care they couldn’t afford.” And the problem with Medicare and Medicaid would not stop there under Ryan’s plan. “He would turn Medicaid into a block grant program and give states less financing each year,” Park said. “States would get onethird less by 2022, which led the C.B.O. to conclude that unless states spent substantially more of their own money on Medicaid, they’d have to make substantial cuts to eligibility, benefits and/or provider payments. COMMENTARY

Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

TEACHING THE TRUTH THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill The movement to implement an appropriate African Centered Curriculum in predominately African in America inner city schools is critical to the on–going struggle for the liberation of African people in this country. We

must continue to demand that the truth be taught throughout the school year. This movement has now become popularly known as the African Centered Education Movement. Simple stated, it focuses on teaching the truth concerning the contributions of Afri- can people to the development of civilization in all subjects. During this new school year we must heighten the dialogue concerning the importance of this movement, particularly as it relates to the future of our children. Throughout the country, Africans in America have become more sensitive to challenging the racist and white supremacist basis of the American public school curriculum. Through the National Black United Front (NBUF) and its world African Centered Education Plan, more Africans in America are beginning to see the need for massive curriculum change in the public schools of this country and the youth must take leadership in this project. There is not a day that goes by that someone does not call my office seeking information and help on how to start the process of changing the curriculum in their school. Parents are becoming more and more dissatisfied with

what their children are being taught. They are also beginning to realize how much isn’t taught. It is clear that the public school system is the place where African America children receive a significant portion of their view of the world and the history of the world. And, it also is a place where large numbers of African in America youth are miseducated under the system of white supremacy through the ideas and interpretation of history that is presented to them. Let’s turn to Carter G. Woodson’s great book, The Mis-Education of the Negro to get some further insights into this problem. Woodson observes “the so–called modern education, with all its defects, however, does others so much more good than it does the Negro, because it has been worked out in conformity to the needs of those who have enslaved and oppressed weaker people.” For example, Woodson says, “The philosophy and ethics resulting from our educational system have justified slavery, peonage, segregation and lynching. The oppressor has the right to exploit, to handicap, and to kill the oppressed.” Continuing on Woodson explains that, “No systematic effort toward change had been possible

for, taught the same economics, history, philosophy, literature and religion which have established the present code of morals, the Negro’s mind has been brought under control of his oppressor.” Concluding on this point Woodson states, “The problem of holding the Negro down, therefore, is easily solved. When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions.” Therefore, it is inspiring to see so many of our people waking up all over America and seeking the truth concerning the real contributions of African people to the world. Through study groups, conferences, Black talk radio, information network exchanges, African Americans are coming into a new African consciousness that seeks to reclaim the African mind and spirit. Through the Portland Model Baseline Essays, the work of the Kemetic Institute, the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), and other writings and curriculum materials, Africans are becoming much more aware of the following points that must be incorporated into the curriculum. 1. Africa is the home of early man. 2. Africa is the cradle of modern man.

3. Africa is the cradle of civilization. 4. Africa once held a position as world teacher including the teacher for the western world. 5. There was and there still is a continental wide unity in Africa and in the African communities around the world. 6. The first time Africans left the continent was not on slave ships. 7. Africa and African people all over the world have been under siege for nearly 2000 years and only recently by European slavery and colonization. 8. There is an African Diaspora all over the world today. 9. African people have resisted domination on the continent and all over the world. 10. Even under slavery, colonization, segregation, apartheid, African people have made monumental contributions to arts, science and politics. These ten points, and others, have become the basis upon which we can judge the white supremacy public school curriculums content in textbooks and other learning materials. In other words, these points have become the basis of determining whether the truth is being taught in the public schools of this country. The Truth will set us all free!

Olympic Gold An Educational Mediocrity: Returns On Investment By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist

than good. But there is no such thing as “luck” in the Olympics. Luck is the collision of preparation and opportunity. Was Gabby Douglas lucky to have been taken on by Liang Chow the coach that trained her to earn the gold? No, she was prepared to shine in a way that made

The Olympic games are a celebration of excellence and athleticism. Whether we are cheering the Williams sisters in their gold medal-winning doubles match, or Serena with her gold, or the graceful Gabby Douglas in flight, or some of the many others, we are cheering their excellence, their indomitable spirits, their drive. We are also acknowledging the tens of thousands of hours that they must have put into practice. Even as we cheer, there are lessons for each of us, both individually and in a social policy context. We’ve all heard, time and time again, “get out there and do it,” or “just do it” or “I worked hard for this.” Often the difference between a gold and silver winner is the one was hungrier, wanted the gold more intensely, and worked harder than the other. To be sure, some Olympians have good days, and others have days that are less

Chow see her potential. And she sacrificed, moving from Virginia to Iowa, missing her family and

moving with a generous white family who, for all their goodwill, were culturally out of synch with Gabby’s Black experience. She worked hard, she sacrificed, and she won the gold medal. There is a parallel between Olympic wins and the state of United States education. Even as the Congress considers sequestration when they come back from their month-long break, educators are concerned that education dollars may be cut. Gabby Douglas worked hard, she sacrificed. For all the effort on education, sometimes it seems as if we are spinning our wheels. We know what some of the problems are, but we won’t act on these problems. The achievement gap can be addressed, and it is in some school systems. In others, little is being done. Gabby Douglas made sacrifices, so much so that the redundant use of the word in this column does not even begin to speak to her investment in herself. Our nation has made few contempo-

rary sacrifices, and an insufficient investment, for the cause of education. Instead, teachers are being laid off, school hours are being cut, and essentials like civics, art and sports are being cut or augmented by parents who contribute so that their sons and daughters can have these classes. Meanwhile, the children of those who don’t have the dollars to contribute to public education find their achievement gap growing each year. As a nation, we will get that in which we invest. If we invest in the Department of Defense, we will get war. If we invest in the Department of Education, along with state and local school systems, we will end up with a better-educated population. If we choose, instead, to invest in correctional facilities, we’ll end up incarcerated people. If past trends are any indication, most often these folks will be African American. If we invest in inner city schools, we close the achievement gap. If we behave as if the world is

race-neutral (or post-racial), when the data say differently, then we end up broadening, not narrowing, the achievement gap. Our Olympians, especially the medalists, are dedicated, hardworking athletes who have committed themselves to achieving excellence. While we give a lot of lip service to educational excellence, the fact is that we are not as dedicated and hard working to that end as we might be. Who feels so passionately about education that they will flood Board of Education meetings and insist on necessary changes? How many are willing to fight for afterschool and summer programs, or provide tutoring. More importantly, how many are willing to change the policies through which we view educational issues, insisting that our legislators address issues of education. There is an anti-tax lobby, led by Grover Norquist of the Americans for Tax Reform, that will not endorse candidates unless they pledge not (Continued on page 17) The Chicago Crusader

matter of fact our Mamas told us to always have on clean underwear if’n we got sick or something. Ima thinks we let our young folks “express themselves” to the point of being ridiculous. From defending their independence in how we look from our head to our feet. I tell you I have never seen so many of our young folk with all kinds of fake hair, all lengths, in all colors, two-tone, it can cause you to have

The child will go a long way, she will no longer have the financial problems that had been an issue before and Ima wishes her well. But in no way will Ima ever ignore an obvious area that more than Ima thought a visit to the hair salon could have fixed. Sorry for the reader who said he/she is “one less reader,” but he/she probably didn’t pay for our newspaper anyway. Nuff sed on Gabby’s hair. Below are two opinons that we hope will satisfy those who don’t agree with Ima and the intellectuals whose hair need fixing

HAIR DU STIRS ‘EM UP Lawd, Ima stirred up something when she suggested that our little Gabby should have gone natural or gotten a perm for the Olympics. Ima came from the old school that said that we had to be “together” in all ways when we were in the public light. History tells us that even when we had one Sunday dress or suit and one pair of school togs and shoes we kept them clean, pressed and polished; our hair was neatly done and by the way we sure as hell did not wear our pants so our underwear was showing. too!!! -ImaBLACK HAIR AT THE OLYMPICS - IN RESPONSE TO GABBY’S DO People who criticize Gabby’s hair obviously don’t care about sports or at least they care more about hair than the efforts it takes to reach the top. As a fanatic sports woman, I definitely care more about sports and to say that the comments of these people deeply bother me is an understatement. To hope that Gabby or her family don’t see any of these ignorant remarks is wishful thinking. Still I wish they didn’t see any of this because I have a good idea of how it feels. Although I absolutely cared more about the game than my hair as a semi champion table tennis player, a top 50 squash player and a passionate volleyball player I was always concerned about my hair. Don’t get me wrong, I could care less when I was on the field. I was too eager to win to care about anything else but when it was time for a picture I never felt like a winner. I knew my permed tresses were never in place. I actually came to terms with it and would even make fun of the straightened ends that

would stick out no matter what. For a photo opt I would just pat them down in the hope that I wouldn’t look like a porcupine. To be honest even if I did, I would still have a good laughing at the image but even more when remembering the game, the action and everything that was going on. Great times, absolutely great times. This hair thing still bothers me though. Not personally. Going natural was one of the best things I ever did for myself and I honestly don’t care what people think of my hair but it hurts me for Gabby. For this Gold Medal Olympic champion and her family. See as someone who had it all and when I say ALL, I mean it. Besides a perm, I had a Jherry Curl, several kinds of weaves, braids, I don’t think there is anything on the planet that I haven’t tried. So as a sport fanatic who tried all of these hairstyles I can honestly tell you, nothing is or feels better than natural. Yes, I do own a business that promotes natural hair but allow me to make my case as a sports aficionado here. See Gabby is competing in Gymnastics in a team so they all have to look alike which is great for team spirit. They ARE a great team with a pretty nice uniform. The problem is Gabby’s hair can never look (Continued on page 16)

Minority mortgage lending often separate and unequal New research shows Black and Latino borrowers dominate FHA, VA loans By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist A new report on mortgage lending has found disturbing disparities in purchasing or refinancing a home located in communities of color. “Paying More for the American Dream VI,” is the latest annual update on mortgage lending by a group of organizations seeking to understand how and why systematic inequalities in mortgage lending persist. Focusing on lending impacts to communities of color and lowerincome neighborhoods in seven of the nation’s large metropolitan areas, Paying More shows a disproportionate number of Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) were found in Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, New York City and Rochester. The report acknowledges the important role played by government-backed mortgages; but also says the evidence of a two-tiered market has troubling implica-

tions. In part it states, “Although FHA lending is a vital source of credit for borrowers of color, the disproportionate prevalence of FHA loans in communities of color raises fair lending flags.” For example, the report found that in Los Angeles, homebuyers in neighborhoods of color received a government-backed loan five times more often than did those in predominantly white neighborhoods. Similarly, in Rochest er, FHA and VA loans together accounted for 86.4 percent of all home-purchase loans made in communities of color. Among all metro areas surveyed, two out of every three home-purchase loans made in communities of color were government-backed. A similar pattern emerged in refinance lending. In Chicago’s communities of color, homeowners received government-backed refinance loans nearly five times more often than homeowners in predominantly white neighborhoods. For Los Angeles and New York City, the refinance disparities worsened respectively to 6.5

Charlene Crowell and 6.9 times as often as homeowners in white neighborhoods. Other findings include: In the seven cities combined, FHA and VA loans accounted for 74.5 percent of all home purchase loans made to Black borrowers, and 66.3 percent of loans made

to Latino borrowers – compared to only 35.9 percent of white borrows. Cleveland had both the highest levels of government-backed refinance lending to Black and Latino borrowers and also the highest rate of government-backed home purchase loans. For home purchases, over 85 percent were government-backed loans. The report was jointly developed by: the California Reinvestment Coalition, the New-York based Empire Justice Center, Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance, Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project, Ohio Fair Lending Coalition, Reinvestment Partners and the Chicago-based Woodstock Institute. Since October 2010 three separate price increases on FHA loans have occurred. The most recent increase was the April announcement of the addition of an upfront mortgage premium payment that will add $1,500 in upfront costs for a typical home of $200,000.

Earlier research by the Center for Responsible Lending has shown that minority borrowers too often get higher-cost loans even when their credit and other loan qualifications match up with similar white borrowers who get more affordable loans. The still unanswered question remains: What is the future of conventional mortgage lending in communities of color? Will we have a broadly accessible mortgage market that serves all qualified homebuyers – regardless of color? In 1954’s historic Brown v. Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously held that in the field of education, separate schools based on color were inherently unequal. Why doesn’t the same reasoning apply to lending? OLYMPIC GOLD! By Cheryl Pearson-McNeil NNPA Columnist

ings while you are feeling patriotic, or inspired or emotional, or all three. What mother among us — who hasn’t given up our early mornings, late evenings and full weekends and holidays to drive, cheer, and coerce our own little athletes toward glory – could tear our eyes away from the commercial that celebrated mothers globally? Whew. Talk about powerful stuff. My eyes were glistening as my own memories of similar mornings flitted across my mind as I watched moms across the world jostling their little ones out of bed and getting them off to practice, returning home later, to do laundry and cook and clean with the company’s products. My 6’4” basketball-playing son looked on incredulously as the tears trickled down my cheeks as I watched the spot. His 16-year-old cynicism collapsing into three words: “Really Ma?! Really?”

If you’re one of the millions of viewers who watched the Olympics recently, you’re not alone. Nielsen research shows that the allimportant, mega-produced opening ceremony in London garnered a stunning 40.7 million total U.S. viewers (Blacks made up 3 million of those watching), annihilating all previously held records for a Summer Olympics broadcast. Not surprisingly, Americans are far more likely to tune in when the games are happening on home turf. Until now, Atlanta’s Olympics opening ceremony in 1996, attracted the largest number of viewers with roughly 40 million. As much as we want to think of the Olympics exclusively as the world’s foremost sports competition (and it is), that can catapult participants into national and even international fame (which it can), it is also a marketing bonanza for sponsors, advertisers and marketers. So, while millions of us watched with bated breath to see which of our stellar athletes or teams would ascend the podium to accept the gold, bronze or silver medals, billions of dollars were spent and/or made to capture our attention as we did all of that watching – and you thought consumerism wasn’t a professional sport!

As you might expect, ratings for the Olympics will probably dwarf the competition for its two weekplus run when the final numbers are calculated after Sunday’s closing ceremony. It’s interesting to note that NBC will probably break ratings records with its Olympic coverage even though much of it was tape-delayed to run in primetime, which some analysts believe underscores the growing power of sports programming. It’s the excitement, the feeling of power and the awe that attracts audiences to the Olympics. You can’t help but feel patriotic when you see the red, white and blue. You get to know

the Olympians as if they were your best friends. So, you want to continue to tune in to cheer them on. Let’s talk about what those numbers mean. We all know that the cost of everything continues to climb over the years. Check out the increase in a 30-second U.S. commercial spot during the opening ceremony: • In 1988, for the Seoul Olympics, a 30-second commercial cost $155,000. • In 2000, advertisers in the Sydney opening ceremony shelled out $275,000 for a 30-second spot. • In 2008, the cost climbed to $320,000 a spot for Beijing’s opening ceremony. • A spot in the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony jumped up to – are you sitting down – as much as $725,000 per commercial. Nielsen analysis shows that with some $1 billion in ad sales and another $200 million in local TV and digital ad revenue, NBC and its family of networks, the U.S. broadcaster which aired the Olympics, may actually break even with its $1.28 billion investment into the London games. For the record, NBC owns the rights to the next four Olympics, having spent $4.38 billion for a package that extends through 2020. The televised games provide an opportunity for a parade of brands to tap into your inner most yearn-

But you know what? I don’t expect him to understand why that particular commercial resonated with me. Because likewise, I don’t feel any connection when my non-athletic self watches a sweaty, hoopster guzzle down energy drinks in a spot that highly resonates with him. And, that my dear fellow consumer is the true sport of advertising – connecting an audience to a product. And when a marketer does that successfully, we, as consumers, repay them with our own form of a gold medal – we purchase the product. But, just like we demand of any Olympian – be sure advertisers earn the status we give them. Cheryl Pearson-McNeil is senior vice president of public affairs and government relations for Nielsen. ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

Bob Marley documentary: superb account of star’s life and music The documentary Marley is the definitive composite of the late Reggae star Bob Marley, whose life began amid a humble, poverty-stricken, farming environment in 1945 in Jamaica. But in the midst of these shortcomings, Marley became the “architect” of Reggae music. The documentary, which is well written and provides an exhaustive look into the musician, revolutionary, legend, and the man, contains interviews with his first school teacher who said she saw that Marley “kept good time and enjoyed singing.” Made with the support of the Marley family, the film also features interviews with the people that knew him best, rare footage and never before seen performances and music. These subjects include Rita, Marley’s wife, Neville “Bunny” Livingston, one of his Wailers’ band mates, Chris Blackwell, of Island Records, and his children, Ziggy, Stephen and Cedella. Barely 20 years old, his mother had a brief relationship with a 60year-old white man named Capt. Norval Marley, who rejected Marley. He hated the fact that he was considered mixed race. This concern was later manifest in the song, One Love, meaning that Marley didn’t want to be known as half Black or half white. Marley learned about the Rasta movement from Mortimer Planno, and he developed an affinity for this religion that he felt provided the only true reflection of Afrocentric people—teaching selfreliance and that Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie was Jesus Christ incarnate. Around this time, Marley grew his famous dreadlocks, taking a vow to not cut or comb his hair, and this became his identity, along with a desire to treat people right, as well as the well-known desire that Bob had to smoke ghani, which Marley said was the herb referred to in the book of Revelations. “It put Bob into a holy mood and a certain consciousness,” said Rita Marley. In 1970, shortly after his mother moved to Wilmington, Delaware, Marley (who had 11 children with seven different women) married background singer Rita, and they both moved to the

Bob Marley States for a short time. Livingston appeared to be a bit jealous of Marley, even though they were friends and band mates. “I met Bob when he was chopping wood,” Livingston said, while crediting himself with teaching Marley the ropes. The name “Wailers” for “Bob Marley and the Wailers” came about when the trio, including Marley, Peter Tosh and Livingston, were searching for a name, and someone suggested that their circumstances lent themselves to “wailing or complaining.” Marley and his music weren’t instant financial successes. However, from Exodus, No Woman, No Cry, Judge Not (at age 16), Simmer Down, Catch A Fire, he became known the world over, worked with Stevie Wonder in 1975 and toured Europe. Finally, Marley’s last concert was in Pittsburgh in September 1980, after

which he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and later died in May 1981 at the age of 36. I simply loved this documentary and was sad to see it end, even at nearly 150 minutes in running time. I think what saddened me the most were Marley’s last months before his death. Marley is a “must-have” for music fans everywhere—not just Reggae fans. It really shows the effect that one’s environment can have on the measure of a man, and his social and political involvement. “This will give people a more emotional connection to Bob—not just as a reggae legend of mythical figure, but to his life as a man,” said Ziggy Marley. Marley, from Academy Award® -winning director Kevin MacDonald, is available on Blu-ray and DVD from Magnolia Home Entertainment. Check your local retail or movie rental outlets.

TOTAL RECALL A Review by Bonnie DeShong If you were fortunate enough to see the original film, Total Recall, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, don’t spoil the memory by going to see this one. I would love to leave it at that but that’s not what I get paid for. Okay. It’s the future (funny, back in the 1990’s when the original film came out 2012 was the future) and the common people of the world are oppressed after a nuclear blast. Douglas Quaid (Col-

in Farrell) is the average Joe of his time. He is employed as a worker in a robot factory, has a lovely wife, and enjoys taking virtual vacations. That’s like the hologram station on the Enterprise. Or maybe it’s more like the Matrix because you have to be hooked up to electrodes. This conversation was going on in my mind as I watched the movie. While taking one of these virtual vacations, something is hooked up in such a way that Douglas is having thoughts and doing things he didn’t know he could do. These things seem right and we find

that he is having a, say it with me, total recall of who he truly is and what his life was. Enters Melina, (Jessica Biel), she’s a good looking, butt kicking, gun toting heroine who helps Douglas make his way back to his reality. Okay, what’s good? The action, Colin Farrell is easy on the eye, the set was cool, and there were lots of flying cars. I say, STAY HOME and rent the original TOTAL RECALL and see a good film. If you must see this one, WAIT FOR THE DVD.

ever seen the film “Sankofa”? It’s about a clueless Black model who, while callously doing a photo shoot on one of the African fortresses from which our ancestors were sent here, finds herself confronted by an angry African man who’s horrified by her behavior. She then somehow finds her spirit transported back into the slave South, where she learns firsthand about what our ancestors endured. This is one of the best movies produced dealing with slavery. It is fully imagined, not just focused on the cruelly racist masters (though there is that), but about all the facets of the slaves: what they did when not working, the respect they had for their more recently arrived African cousins, the self-hatred building in them. It shows their pride and hopelessness, strength and helplessness, torment and defiance. Not as unrelentingly rough as things like “Roots” or “The Color Purple”, but also not sidestepping the realities of slavery, it is a must see. White said Governor Pat Quinn signed new legislation making the sports team series license plates including the Chicago Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs and White Sox available to motorcycles. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

101 YEARS OF A REMARKABLE TREASURE EDITOR’S NOTE: The Crusader Newspaper Family lost a close family member with the death of Bernyce Wright on August 6. The oldest subscriber to the Crusader and a resident of Ida B. Wells Homes when the Crusader began in 1940, Ms. Wright will be sorely missed. A celebration of her life was held Saturday, August 18 at St. Mark A.M.E. Church. A woman of high principles and quick wit, the essence of her life is well captured in the obituary prepared by her family. It is for that reason we are reprinting it in its entirety for our readers.

in the nursing facility where she had resided since November, 2006 while waiting to travel to Michigan for the funeral of her 100 year-old niece and best buddy, Zetha Hayes Dickerson. Numerous recurring infections and ailments contributed further to her deterioration and necessitated her being hospitalized five times since April 17, 2012. After a valiant battle with those illnesses during which she kept the faith, the grand lady known as Mimi was received into eternity on August 6, 2012. Mimi’s final resting place will be alongside her beloved grandson, Harry Leonard (Len) Pryor, III who is entombed in the Sanctuary of Life in the Oak Woods Cemetery Mausoleum.

Bernyce Eleanor Hayes was born October 29, 1910 in Stamps, Arkansas, the fourteenth child of former slave John H. Hayes and Hattie (Sykes) Hayes. Her parents were from Louisiana and migrated north to Arkansas to provide a better way of life for their children and themselves. The first thirteen were born in Shongaloo, a small town near Haynesville, in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. The young Bernyce Eleanor Hayes attended elementary school in Stamps, Arkansas and spent her freshman year of high school in Hope, Arkansas, less than one block from where future President of the United States, William Jefferson (Bill) Clinton would be born. She completed her high school education at Arkadelphia Presbyterian Academy in Arkadelphia, Arkansas where she was an honor student, a forward on the girls’ basketball team, and sang alto in an all-female vocal quartet that performed throughout the AME Church circuit in the State of Arkansas. During Bernyce’s sophomore year in high school, the young Marguerite Johnson and her brother, Bailey Johnson, Jr. arrived in Stamps, Arkansas following the divorce of their parents to live with their grandmother who ran the local grocery store later referred to in “I know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou, Marguerite Johnson’s assumed name. Born into a musical family, all of whom either sang or played instruments (her maternal uncle Rube Sykes, born a slave, was the best fiddler for miles around!), she ultimately was to assume the position of church pianist at Bethel AME Church in Stamps, Arkansas. She often told that her brother, Joseph, was the pianist for the silent movie theater in downtown Stamps where the Black patrons forced to sit in the balcony quietly giggled with laughter because they had the best seats in the house anyway, and their pianist brother was on the main floor performing as none other could! Bernyce Hayes subsequently met and married Joseph D. Wright, fa-

ther of Otis L. Wright, and following the death of her Mother, they, their infant daughter Barbara (aka Bobbye), Bernyce’s father and a niece and nephew relocated to Chicago, Illinois to join three of her sisters and their families. She united with Quinn Chapel AME Church, the oldest AME church in the city, having been established in 1847. She received post secondary training as a home nurse and was employed as a registered mail clerk for thirty-six years with Aldens, Inc., a mail order firm from which she retired June 26, 1980. Imbued with strong work ethic, she attracted lifelong friends and colleagues from among her co-employees. At the age of 100, she was paid tribute by Local 743 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as its oldest member and was included on the celebratory DVD being prepared for the 100th birthday of the organization which was one year YOUNGER than she! Bernyce Wright was the oldest alumna of the Lafayette County Training School/Ellis High of Stamps, Arkansas and attended every all-school reunion from 1980 until 2006 when numerous ailments prevented her from living independently. She joined St. Mark United Methodist Church in the 1980s and held dual membership with that congregation and Quinn Chapel AME Church where, at the time of her death, she had been a member for 74 years. She received numerous awards including the LCTS/Ellis High School Outstanding Alumni Award; The AME Christian Debutante Master Award, and The Chicago Crusader Newspaper Appreciation Award for being the oldest and longest time subscriber. As the official “sweetheart” of Chicago Music Association, Branch No. 1, of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. (NANM, est. 1919), she regularly engaged in “verbal fisticuffs” with CMA 2nd Vice-President Dr. Edna Williams and CMA Junior/Youth Director Barry K. Elmore, much to her delight. Bernyce Wright had many nicknames foisted upon her by family and friends, but the ones that stuck were Aunt Nap, “Mimi” and “Channel 2 News.” Mimi was “mother” and “grandmother” to her daughter’s friends, church members, nieces and nephews as well as her co-workers from Aldens, Inc. For her 90th birthday, which she said was the best birthday of all, she spent five weeks riding across the country in Barbara’s little Toyota Corolla visiting relatives, friends and historic sites along the way. While riding through the Rocky Mountains outside Denver, Colorado, she exclaimed “How can anyone not believe that there is a God? Who else could have created

Bernyce Eleanor Hayes this wonderment?” An avid music lover, Handel’s “Messiah” was her passion and she never missed a St. Mark Chancel Choir performance until her illness prevented her attendance. And, if you didn’t know it already from her choices, the pipe organ, the king of instruments, was her favorite. Mimi never missed the weekly Saturday broadcasts of The Metropolitan Opera performances either. She and her family were regular patrons of Chicago’s historic Regal Theater where all of the legendary Black entertainers performed live before they were “discovered.” We never missed an engagement by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat “King” Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Earl “Fatha” Hines, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Dorothy Donegan and others too numerous to name although she would sleep throughout the accompanying movie and wake up alive and alert when the

stage show resumed. Mimi celebrated her 100th birthday October 29, 2010 with 103 family members and friends from around the country attending a banquet in her honor. Adding to her pride and joy on the occasion was the 100th birthday message received from President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Mimi served as the official John H. Hayes “Family Scribe” by corresponding with family members throughout the United States and never forgetting to send birthday, get-well and other congratulatory messages to everyone she knew. Even after relocating to a residential nursing and rehabilitation center, she continued her “scribe duties” until failing health forced her to trade in her pen and paper, birthday, get well and alloccasion cards for a cell phone, to her daughter’s utter dismay. Mimi’s health began a rapid decline after suffering a fall February 6

Celebrating Mimi’s long life and legacy is her devoted daughter, Barbara (Wright-Pryor) Williams and son, Otis (Gertherene) Wright; her niece/daughter, Yvonne Powell; grandchildren Dorothea Pryor (Carl) Andrews; Robbie Wright; Monique Wright-(Keith) Gordon; Christopher (Kim) Wright; Aaliyah Eleanor Pryor; Cherice and Darnell Brown; her “adopted” grandchildren Michelle (Derrick) Brown and Courtney (whom she nicknamed “Buzzy”); Angelo LaGrone, William N. Hallmon, M.D and Metropolitan Opera baritone Mark Rucker; ten great-grandchildren; The Aldenites and The Teamsters Local 743 Retirees Club; her “special” daughters, Rachel Wheeler; Delores Murrell, Hildred Edwards and Dr. Dorothy R. Leavell-Smith; her devoted care givers Jessie Billups and St. Mark Lay Visitation member/- best friend Jacqueline Payne; the St. Mark UM and the Quinn Chapel AME families; the Drexel Square Neighbors; “Channels 5, 7 and 9,” and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

HEALTH ACCESS and reach out and read engage young patients with new books Primary care physicians at Access Community Health Network (ACCESS) have been able to help young patients not only with their health care needs, but also with providing an encouraging nod toward reading with help from the national Reach Out and Read (ROR) program. Within the last 12 months, ACCESS Hawthorne Family Health Center, which serves the Cicero area, has distributed approximately 980 books through the program, which is an evidencebased pediatric early literacy program aimed at encouraging literacy development in young patients from six months to five years of age. The program involves the pediatrician giving each child a brand-new, age-appropriate book at every well-child checkup, as well as speaking with the parents about the importance of reading aloud every day. ACCESS Regional Manager Laura Whalley is excited about the outcomes this program year. “Incorporating the Reach Out and Read program here at Hawthorne has made a powerful impact on our patients,” she said. “The goal is not just giving a book, but it’s the valued investment of taking the time to inspire patients and families of all ages.” Pediatrician Anne Gearhart, M.D, is equally as excit-

Debunking Myths The hot topic of stereotypes and its effects on Black culture and the Black family continue to be debated. And, the discussion is never lacking for new insight offering fresh perspectives. Author and college professor Lakesia Johnson and psychologist Kathryn Ogletree will appear at the Chatham fest discussing their book “Iconic: Decoding Images of the Revolutionary Black Woman,” which showcases the strength of African-American women from 1970s to today and how these women have man- aged their images despite the negative labels ap16

The program encourages a bond between parent and child and gives the child a necessary tool to succeed in school.” Other pediatricians at ACCESS Hawthorne are also

thrilled with the program. “The best part of the Reach Out and Read Program for me as a pediatrician is watching my patient either read aloud or make up a story as they flip through the pages,” added Hazel Galicia, M.D. “It’s a great feeling to know that you are actively influencing a child’s development and literacy.” The books that the children receive are also useful for parents as they wait for appointments or are on the go with their children to other places. “As pediatricians,

biographies that I read so it wouldn’t be a waste of money if you’d only buy it to read what goes through ones mind when entering center court with a weave on. So when I see Black women in sports wearing weaves, I always wonder how they do it. I personally just couldn’t deal with my sweaty scalp under the fake hair. All kinds of conditioners, greases and gel would mix up with my perspiration drops and pile up until I had time to remove the additional hair. I really tried because it was easy wearing a weave. At least for a while I didn’t have to bother with my hair but I just couldn’t do it. That doesn’t mean that I do not admire those who can though. I applaud them for caring as much about the sport they love as well as for their looks and do it so well. I think I may even be getting a little jealous here. I wish I cared as much about my looks that much to go that extra mile. Not that I would choose a weave. My choice would still be a natural one. Although my braids were also fake and one time a few of them shamefully came out during training, I still think braids are one of the best options when playing sports. This easy maintenance getup-and-go do is still my goto style when I am busy. Another choice would be cornrows like Gold Medalist Lucie Decosse or to rock a fro like my new favorite Megan Hodge who had 18 kills yesterday. I wonder if Gabby had a choice though. As fabulous and as tight as she and her teammates are, I just guess that in the spirit of the team little Miss Douglas would have complied to any uniformity the gymnasts came up with without even giving hair a thought. Black women are so used

to the unwritten hair etiquette that our hair norms have been based on a texture that is completely different from our natural strands for centuries. The sad part of this story is that too many of us don’t realize this. If people would only realize this then the choice of what hairstyle, weave or afro an athlete was wearing would not cause controversy. Instead we would cheer on the fabulous five wearing Afro Puffs without giving it another thought. I was appalled at the comment that your columnist made about taking Ms. Douglas a suitcase full of perm if she could have gotten a flight out to London. It’s (sic) comments like that which keep our own nationality divided. We are damned if we go straight hair or natural. I personally saw a beautiful strong Black 16-year-old young lady representing the United States in the Olympics and winning a gold medal as well. This is why so many of us Blacks don’t know who we are or whose we are, I feel this paper should have encouraged her and say “well done my sister you have made us proud.” I’m just saying this is my 1st right amendment. Olympic Gold . . . (Cont’d from page 6) to raise taxes, and the Tea Party that is so effective that they are unseating Republican stalwarts. Might a group of education advocates come together to develop power as formidable as that of the Tea Party? Might that group decided that any legislator that cannot support a robust educational agenda, is unworthy of reelection. Might we have the will to assert that all children can learn, and then make their learning a priority? We will get what we invest in and, unfortunately, we aren’t investing enough in education. Harper does Illinois proud with Silver medal in Olympics East St. Louis native eager to get back home to celebrate her success in London By J. Coyden Palmer For the second straight Olympics, Illinois native Dawn Harper will be returning to her home state with an Olympic medal after she finished second in the 110 meter hurdles in London last week. Harper, contacted via Facebook, said she is excited about returning to her hometown of East St. Louis later this year after she completes her European track season and celebrating where it all started for her. Harper’s second place finish earned her a Silver medal, to go along with the Gold she won at the 2008 games in Beijing, China. Now 28, and married to Craig Everhart, whom

unemployment and crime rate, Harper said she never focused on the negative back home, but is fond of all of the support she got from family, friends, teachers and coaches growing up. Many saw in her great potential with her natural athletic ability. She said having someone else believe in you and love you is the greatest gift she was ever given. “All teens struggle with their identity and want to be accepted and told they are loved,” Harper said. “I was blessed to have those people in my life. I was also aided by having Jackie Joyner-Kersee as a role model.” Indeed East St. Louis Senior High now has three Olympic Gold medalists in track and field that they can boast about. Al Joyner was the 1984 Gold medalist in the triple jump and his sister Jackie Joyner-Kersee won gold

ILLINOIS NATIVE Dawn Harper, who won six titles during her high school career in track and field, earned a Silver medal in the Olympic Games in London last week. She is eager to return home to celebrate with family and friends.

DAWN HARPER (center) said track and field has given her the chance to see the world and changed her perspective on life. ning a big celebration upon her return. Manley has been involved in athletics in East St. Louis since 1975. During that time, he has seen thousands of athletes. While he never coached Dawn personally, he said he knew as early as her sophomore year that she had the potential for greatness. “Dawn has always had that gleam and spark in her eyes and you can tell that she loves the sport. She always had fun competing,” Manley said. “In high school the competition might not have been hard for her, but you could tell she always enjoyed the hard work necessary to make her races look so easy. We will make sure to celebrate her when she comes back and we will be sure that our current students are knowledgeable of what she has accomplished when they come back to school next week. We’ll make sure we also have a parade when she gets back to us.” Manley is also hoping that Harper’s high-profile success will translate into more girls taking up the sport. He said track and field, along with softball, tennis

and other sports are suffering in participation numbers in the Black community because of basketball being played year-round. He singled out the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) as being the chief culprit as their season begins just weeks after the high school basketball season ends. Manley said many AAU coaches are not concerned about their player’s all-around growth as an athlete and are forcing kids to choose to specify a sport when they are too young. Manley said track and field, with its diverse events is able to physically develop an athlete for any other sport a kid may want to go into. He thinks too many basketball coaches are being selfish, by restricting players to playing only basketball. “I think kids need time just to be kids and for their young bodies to recover after a season of basketball,” Manley said. “We could have more athletes like Dawn Harper in our midst, but we will never know if we keep forcing kids to decide at a young age to specialize.”
