A time to remember Racism, injustice linger as Blacks this weekend mark the anniversaries of two tragic events

Pain, emotions persist on the 60th Blacks in New Orleans still lag behind Anniversary of Emmett Till’s death on the 10th Anniversary of Katrina By Erick Johnson Sixty years ago on August 28, 1955, a 14year-old boy from Chicago was brutally killed in Money, MS after he allegedly whistled at a white woman. Outrage in Black America would erupt after millions would see Emmett Till’s badly disfigured body in newspapers and magazines across the country.

His mother, Mamie Till Mobley, wanted the world to see what two white men did to her son. But, she also sought justice for her son’s death, a dream that never happened. Decades later, dozens of Black grieving mothers would find themselves in the same position. It will be a historic weekend where the past and present collide as thousands in Chicago help mark the 60th anniversary of the murder of Till—a crime that would thrust the city in a global spotlight and would have a profound impact on the Civil Rights Movement. With several free events, the anniversary is expected to bring (Continued on page 10)

By Curtis Bunn Urban News Service New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu took to the road to declare his city is “no longer recovering, no longer rebuilding” a decade after Hurricane Katrina devastated it in one of America’s worst natural disasters, but some refuse to buy that speech. For many African Americans who watched their city submerged in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico for nearly a week in 2005, Landrieu’s message rings hollow. Donya Richardson, a 41-year-old retail employee, moved from New Orleans to Atlanta in advance of the storm. She re-

turned to her old neighborhood three times – each time leaving in tears. She lived with her then 6-year-old daughter in the Ninth Ward, one of the low-lying, predominantly African-American areas hardest hit by the Category 5 storm that claimed 1,833 lives and left 705 people missing. The levees, built to contain a Category 3 hurricane, collapsed, and 80 percent of the city drowned under its enormity. “I went back about a month after everything settled down. I cried because the neighborhood was a wreck. I mean, a wreck,” she said “The destruction seemed unreal. It looked like a bulldozer just came (Continued on page 11)

Bronzeville honors Marcus Garvey with a parade By Erick Johnson To the thumping sounds of drums, a colorful procession of marchers holding Pan-African flags held a parade through Bronzeville Saturday, August 22 as they shouted famous quotes by the late Marcus Garvey. “Up you mighty race! Accomplished what you will!” they echoed as they marched through the historic neighborhood. The parade honored Garvey, a leader who during Jim Crow laws and segregation, started the first major movement to improve the lives of millions of Blacks in America. With several police escorts and participants holding their fists high, the event at times, resembled a demonstration instead of a parade. With incidents of police killings and shootings across the country, youth and Blacks across the nation are beginning to embrace more of Garvey’s strong beliefs of Black pride and nationalism more than ever before. Those ideals were on full display Saturday as marchers celebrated the 128th anniversary of Garvey’s birth. Participants young and old, waved the red, black and green Pan-African flag, which has become a symbol of nationalism that has been visible in protests in Ferguson, MO, New York and

Cleveland, OH. At the Bud Billiken parade on Martin Luther King Dr. on August 8, the PanAfrican adorned several floats and were among the large crowds of spectators. The flag was created by the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), an organization Garvey founded in the 1920s. Scholars say at the time, there were some 700 UNIA branches in 38 states, including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Saturday’s parade in Bronzeville was sponsored by the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA), which held a banquet at the Prince Hall Masonic Temple later that day. Born on August 17, 1887, Garvey adopted the ideals of his mentor, Booker T. Washington, who believed that Blacks would advance not through politics, but education, hard work and selfhelp. Garvey also believed that Blacks should not be preoccupied with integration, but with attaining their own economic and cultural success with the hope of returning to Africa one day. In New York’s Harlem neighborhood, his UNIA organization created three grocery stores, two restaurants, office buildings and three ships that made up the Black Star Line. Garvey never saw his dream fully

Target pays $2.8M discrimination settlement Chicago Crusader staff report Target Corp. will pay $2.8 million to settle a lawsuit that accused the Minneapolis-based retailer of discriminating against thousands of Blacks and other applicants seeking upper-level positions. The announcement was made on Monday, August 24 by the Minneapolis Area Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The Minneapolis Area Office is part of EEOC’s Chicago District Office. The organization filed the lawsuit in 2006 on behalf of 3,000 people. The EEOC alleged Target used three employment assessment tests that disproportionately screened out applicants seeking mid-management jobs. EEOC said the test helped Target identify applicants seeking positions from their race and sex. The majority of applicants

were Blacks, Asians and women. The EEOC said the tests were not job-related and consistent and violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The $2.8 million settlement will be divided among the 3,000 applicants. Target will pay for a claims administrator to distribute the funds. “We are pleased that Target chose to work with us to reach this conciliation agreement and that through our joint efforts, we have been able

to bring about real change at Target without resorting to protracted litigation,” said Julianne Bowman, director of EEOC’s Chicago District Office. The settlement is among the highest in recent years for employment discrimination. In 2010, a Chicago janitorial company settled a case for $3 million. In 2012, Pepsi Beverages Co. agreed to pay 3.1 million after the EEOC accused the company of conducting background checks to find arrests, not convictions of 300 Black male applicants. In this latest case, the EEOC also found that Target used a pre-employment medical exam that was reserved for particular leadership openings. The EEOC said the test violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which forbids such tests before a job is offered. In addition, The EEOC said Target failed to maintain the records required to assess the impact of its hiring procedures. During their investigation, the EEOC said Target discontinued the use of the illegal assessment tests. As part of the settlement, Target has agreed that it will not use the tests again for applicants seeking employment. In addition, Target has made changes to its applicant tracking systems to ensure that the col-

lection of data is sufficient to assess adverse impact. Target has also agreed to monitor the assessments it uses for professional positions to identify its adverse impact based on race, ethnicity and gender. Annually, Target will provide the EEOC with a detailed summary of the studies and the adverse impact analysis conducted. Target also agreed to retain an experienced outside consultant to provide a minimum of two hours of training at least once per year to all personnel responsible for the development and implementation of exempt assessments on the topics of record keeping, the ADA and preemployment medical exams, and disparate impact in employment selection procedures. “We applaud Target for taking corrective action to ensure the validity of their hiring practices,” said EEOC Chair Jenny R. Yang in a statement. “This resolution demonstrates the benefits of working with EEOC and serves as a model for businesses committed to effective and lawful selection procedures. Target officials did not admit any wrongdoing, but the company agreed to settle the complaint to avoid the high costs of trying the case in court. www.chicagocrusader.com

Bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform Advances in America Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. Whenever I have an opportunity to rejoin the transformational activities of the civil rights organization that was founded and led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I am always eager to participate. Such was the case recently in Baton Rouge, La., on July 23, 2015. The occasion was the 57th National Convention of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) during a panel on criminal justice reform. In my younger days, I was the statewide youth coordinator for Dr.

Harry C.F.Alford Dr. Benjamin Chavis Jr. King and SCLC in my home state of North Carolina. I learned firsthand how to organize and mobilize effectively following the living example of Dr. King. I only mention this because one of my enduring memories about Martin Luther King Jr. was his ability to see the social change benefits of encouraging coalition-building across partisan political and racial lines. Principles of multiracial and bipartisan coalition-building are important to any movement that seeks to reform or change the status quo. I had no reluctance, therefore, to join a panel discussion during the SCLC convention on a topic that is dear to my heart, soul and spirit – “Uniting for Progress and Opportunity: Bipartisan Efforts to Reform the Criminal Justice System.” I was pleased to join my fellow panelists: attorney Mark Holden, general counsel and senior vice president of Koch Industries; attorney Norman Reimer, executive director of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL); and noted Capitol Hill journalist Lauren Victoria Burke. The panel was moderated by Curley M. Dossman Jr., president of Georgia-Pacific Foundation. According to Mark Holden, “The criminal justice system as it is set up today is a major impediment to opportunity for disadvantaged and poor people. There is a two-tiered system where if you’re rich and guilty you get a better deal than if you’re poor and innocent.” Holden is accurate, and I agree with his principled position. www.chicagocrusader.com

Holden is a Libertarian and I am a Democrat, but we are now working together to build an effective, bipartisan national criminal justice reform movement across America. If Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, he would be at the forefront of this movement. The “land of the free” has now become “the land of the imprisoned.” Today, there are simply too many people in prison in the United States. Although we are only 5 percent of the world’s population, our nation holds 25 percent of the world’s prisoners, who are disproportionately people of color and people of poverty. There is, however, good news. A growing number of major companies and national organizations are now following the lead of Koch Industries and the Charles Koch Institute by bonding together on the issue of criminal justice reform, including Apple, Starbucks, Walmart, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), NACDL, SCLC, NAACP, Coalition for Public Safety, and the Center for American Progress. In its report from the SCLC convention, Rolling Out magazine stated, “Along with Apple, the computer juggernaut, Koch Industries is a leader in removing prior convictions from stopping individuals from receiving a fair chance at employment. These two companies are at the front of a movement to “remove the box” (the “have you ever been convicted of a felony” box) on employment applications by implementing that change themselves.” Yet there is more good news. There is progress now in the U.S. Congress on this important issue. Congressmen Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) and Bobby Scott (D-Va.) have introduced the bipartisan SAFE Justice Act. The acronym SAFE stands for Safe, Accountable, Fair and Effective. According to Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU, and Mark Holden in a timely article they co-authored for Politico,“. . . the legislation is an important step in addressing America’s ballooning, costly and ultimately unfair federal sentencing and corrections system, which needlessly throws away lives and decimates entire communities.” We support the SAFE Justice Act, and you should let your members of Congress know that this bipartisan bill should be enacted without delay. It is ironic, but a welcomed reality to see the advances that are currently being accomplished on the issue of criminal justice reform. We must be vigilant, principled and persistent in order to achieve the goal of effective reform. Recently, I visited the headquarters of the Charles Koch Institute (CKI) in Arlington, Va. When you

are building a social, a political or an economic change movement, it is also important, from my perspective, to get to know something about the integrity and commitments of the people who you are working with to achieve the mutually desired change. I was impressed

by the diligence of the diverse team of scholars and staff I met with at the institute. I took a selfie with Dr. Richard Fink, president of the Charles Koch Institute. I have that photograph posted in my office at the National Newspaper Publishers Association

in Washington, D.C. Actually we took the photo together in front of a large poster of another one my freedom movement heroes, Frederick Douglass, which is prominently displayed outside the entrance to Dr. Fink’s CKI office. There is a very (Continued on page 13)

EDITORIAL BACK TO SCHOOL IN STYLE Although we are still in the summer season, it is back to school time for the nation’s children. School is arguably one of the most important ingredients in the quest for a successful life. Of course, school does not guarantee success; success must be earned, but school can play a major role in whether, or how, it is achieved. In a public service announcement President Barack Obama says that 30 percent of the nation’s youth do not graduate from high school. And it is also said that this number is much higher among African American boys. It is no secret that African American males are having a very hard time in America. They are disproportionately represented among the unemployed, among the prison population, and in other negative social indicators. There are many historical reasons for this state of affairs, and no doubt institutional racism and the long-time attempt on the part of a certain ilk of white supremacists to disenfranchise and destroy Black males plays a role. Be this as it may, the truth of the matter is that attitudes are worth far more than circumstances. Just because someone is out to hurt you doesn’t mean that you should lay down and not offer resistance. Unfortunately, this is what a lot of young people have decided to do. This is patently evident when observing the trappings of popular culture, in particular, in the styles promulgated by it. For example, take a gander at many African American youth and you can conclude that it’s no wonder why they are unemployed, or why they are not doing well in school. For one, how can we expect a certain segment of this group to be hired by the average employer when modest dress is anathema to them. Many young men will tell you that they do not even own a suit! Moreover, many of them do not want to give up the sagging style, which turns off many people. Some question what is so bad about that style - the answer is that it has very negative connotations; it had its origins in prisons (and some say in slavery); and therefore, our youth are adapting prison culture in lieu of conforming to a more traditional dress standard. So the style of sagging, in itself, is negative and can hinder employment opportunities. Most schools discourage sagging, but it has proven to be very difficult to oppose this trend. Teachers and administrators have to constantly tell young men to pull their pants up; some have even threatened to send them home, but nothing seems to dissuade them from adopting this style. Because of the foregoing, it is a wonder that people even question why so many of our youth are not doing well. They have adopted a prison culture; a gangsta culture and the dysfunction that it represents. They are killing each other, and they also end up killing innocent bystanders, including young children and babies. We can feel sympathy for these youth, but we must resist becoming apologists; we must not become ENABLERS. This is what happens when we keep making excuses for them. We know that their circumstances can be made better by making jobs available. But the reality is that gangsta prison culture encourages youth to drop out of school, and therefore, they are hindered not only by their choice of clothing style and incarceration rates, but by rampant illiteracy. Many African America high school students are reading on 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade levels! Try getting a viable job with that handicap, along with the inability to present in a well-groomed manner. It is obvious that our community is in need of spiritual healing. Part of this must come from the adoption of a new style - but in this regard it must be a new learning style, a new approach to education, and the eschewing of all of the negative accoutrements of a dysfunctional anti-academic lifestyle. Our youth must lift their sights from the gutter of trash popular culture and must go back to school in style - a behavioral style that ensures academic success. A luta continua.

Why are Black elected officials and Civil Rights leaders of Chicago silent about the removal of “The Black Presence in Chicago?” There was a small house on the north bank of the Chicago River labeled DuSable House in 1779. Jean Baptist Point DuSable was the founder of Chicago and first land proprietor. The Michigan Avenue Bridge has been named for DuSable, there is no statute however, there is a bust for Jack Brickhouse. There should be a statue for DuSable. The elementary schools that were named to honor Black heroes are changed or closed. Air Force major Robert H. Lawrence of Chicago was born in 1936 and died 1967. The first Black Astronaut U.S.A.F., a product of Haines Elementary School, Englewood High School and Bradley University, name was removed from elementary school and changed to Burnham Elementary School. COMMENTARY

The Last Straw for Hillary? Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford When you do bad things and get away with it, you are encouraged to keep doing it. However, eventually you are going to do so much that you can no longer get away with it. That final act is like what the fable says: It becomes the “straw” that broke the camel’s back. The camel may be carrying a massive load but that one straw puts it beyond the total capacity and the camel collapses. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s latest scandal – putting government information on privately owned devices – may be that damaging straw. Hillary Clinton has a brilliant brain. A friend of mind went through law school with her at Yale University. He says he would always try to sit next to her during lectures so that he could copy her notes. Her notes were meticulous and very organized. Copying her notes to study them later would ensure him of a very good grade. He says she was the brightest person he ever met. Why would someone so educated and talented become tangled in an adult life of scandals? Is she reckless, greedy, selfish, dishon-

Harry C. Alford est or all of the above? She began being recognized for her talent during the investigation of former President Richard Nixon in 1972. She worked for the Committee Chairman, Congressman Peter J. Rodino. One of the judges during the hearings accused her of being an incessant liar. Many are starting to believe that today. It is ironic that she wrote the “Impeachment Protocol” that was intended for Nixon. But he resigned to avoid it. Later, her own husband Bill Clinton would be impeached by

the House of Representatives using that same protocol. One of whom was her Yale classmate Bill Clinton who would become Governor of the State of Arkansas. They married and she would become the First Lady of Arkansas and eventually the First Lady of the United States. All the while the scandals and accusations against her started to mount. They started out as petty quick money schemes like the Whitewater incident and rigged stock deals. As soon as she came to Washington, DC there was “Travelgate.” When she left the White House she took the White House China and still has it today. Today, we are talking about the possibility of high crimes and misdemeanors. Yes Hillary, it’s not just newspapers and TV shows talking about you. This time it is the FBI and the CIA. I guess all of those “near misses” gave her a feeling of superiority and Teflon. As soon as they left the White House she and Bill started a new and major hustle. The Clinton Global Initiative started out with high expectations and they were met – hook or crook. I went to the kickoff for the new “nonprofit” as I received two “comp” tickets. To my shock they raised more than $2 bil-

lion dollars during the kickoff – mostly from Middle East and Asian royalty. My wife and I had the opportunity to sit with the late Maya Angelou and Michael Jordan’s mother, Ms. Delores. Noticing Maya, President Clinton came over and sat/chatted with us for about 30 minutes. Quite an evening! $2 billion from the kickoff and a guaranteed successful future. But that wasn’t enough for Hillary. They would communicate with the powerful billionaires of the world. She and the President would get speaking fees ranging from $100,000 to $500,000. CGI would get “donations” by the millions. It was later realized that these speaking engagements and “donations” were related to political situations that the donors would be dealing with and one or both of the Clintons would come to their rescue. When President Obama took office they lobbied for Hillary to get the Secretary of State position. That happened and the CGI scheme went on steroids. Hillary walked into the Department of State and ensured herself of no in-house oversight. For the first time in history the agency had an empty Inspector General office.

Hillary got rid of the in-house cop position. Next, she would start using a private/personal server in order to keep authorities from knowing what she was doing at all times (no emails to trace). At this point Hillary started playing real dirty. She traveled around the world doing the “pay to play” scheme with kings, queens, sheiks, dictators and corrupt heads of state. CGI now has well over $500 million dollars gained while she was Secretary of State. She even set up a move that got Russia some of our Uranium (nuclear ingredient) through some shady rich Canadians. That is clearly selling out our nation. She hid her emails and other evidence for over three years but the authorities are closing in. The FBI has the missing server and over 60,000 emails. They have already leaked to the press that crimes have been committed. According to the polls, most Americans believed Hillary is dishonest and an amazing liar. Funny, we were warned in 1972. May justice prevail! Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

Planned Attacks on Planned Parenthood By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Conservatives are attacking Planned Parenthood so viciously that you would be forgiven if you thought that the organization was running for president as a Democrat. It is often said, “The first casualty when war comes is truth.” Actually, the first casualty of politics is truth. That’s particularly true when it comes to the orchestrated attacks on Planned Parenthood. The antichoice Center for Medical Progress (CMP) has released seven videos that seek to discredit Planned Parenthood. Media Matters said, “The latest video again relies on footage already debunked as highly edited, features conversations with thirdparty providers who acted as the middlemen between researchers and clinics, and relies heavily on the account of a technician who did not work for Planned Parenthood…” Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, has also launched a major attack against Planned Parenthood and he should know better. In an interview with Fox News on Aug. 12, Carson said that Planned Parenthood erects most of its clinics in Black neighborhoods as a “way to control that population.” However, ABC’s Martha Raddatz reported, “Planned Parenthood estimates that fewer than five perwww.chicagocrusader.co

George E. Curry cent of its health centers are located in areas where more than one-third of the population is African-American.” In a detailed rebuttal, the Washington Post awarded Carson “Four Pinocchios,” indicating a “whopper” of a lie, the highest level of falsehoods. “A 2011 report by Life Dynamics, which opposes abortion, used Census data to determine the AfricanAmerican and Hispanic population of each zip code where Planned Parenthood has an office,” the newspaper recalled. “The report was intended to show that the abortion clinics are placed mostly in areas where Black residents exceed the average Black population of the state.

“But when you look closely at the data, it turns out that there are only about 110 locations (out of about 800) where the Black population exceeds 25 percent of the overall population. That certainly does not support the claim that “most” clinics are in ‘Black neighborhoods.’ “Separately, in 2011, the Guttmacher Institute surveyed all abortion providers (about 1,700), including Planned Parenthood, and found that 60 percent are in majority-white neighborhoods — and that fewer than one in ten abortion providers are located in neighborhoods where more than half of the residents are Black. The statistics did not change when the numbers were adjusted for nearly 600 providers that conduct more than 400 abortions a year.” Referring to the founder of Planned Parenthood, Carson said: “I know who Margaret Sanger is and I know that she believed in eugenics and that she was not particularly enamored with Black people.” He is correct in saying that Margaret Sanger believed in eugenics, the idea that the human race can be improved by encouraging or discouraging reproduction based on genetic traits. Even so, Carson tells only half of the story – the half favorable to his point of view. “…I think people should go back and read about Margaret Sanger, who founded this place – a woman

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

who Hillary Clinton by the way says she admires,” Carson said in the Fox interview. “Look and see what many people in Nazi Germany thought about her.” The Washington Post did just that. “Starting in 1916, Sanger’s clinics at first were aimed mainly at poor immigrant women. The first clinic was in a neighborhood ‘populated largely by Italians and Eastern European Jews,’ according to the 2010 book “Birth Control on Main Street,” by Cathy Moran Hajo. Sanger did not open a Harlem clinic until the 1930s, even though infant mortality rates there were similar. “Hajo found that in the 19161939 period, white activists were more likely to exclude African Americans from clinics, rather than include them. There were some halfhearted efforts to create African American clinics, but white activists actually gave little or no assistance. ‘Whatever the activists’ personal beliefs about race may have been, there was no grand program to exterminate nonwhites or the poor,’ Hajo concluded.” The Post also noted, “Sanger in 1938 appeared to speak positively about the German program undertaken by the Nazis. ‘Reports in medical journals state that the indications laid down in the German law are being carefully observed. These are gongenital feeble-mindedness; schiz-

ophrenia, circular insanity; heredity epilepsy; hereditary chorea (Huntington’s); hereditary blindness or deafness; grave hereditary bodily deformity and chronic alcoholism,” she said. “The rights of the individual could be equally well safeguarded here, but in no case should the rights of society, of which he or she is a member, be disregarded.’ “Yet in 1939, she wrote that before Hitler came to power, ‘I was one of the few Americans who joined the Anti-Nazi Committee and gave money, my name and any influence I had with writers and others, to combat Hitler’s rise to power in Germany.’ She added that ‘my three books were destroyed [burned] and have not been allowed to circulate in Germany.’” It would be great if we could get these orchestrated lies about abortion out of circulation. CELEBRATING THE 49TH YEAR OF CCICS Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill

By Julianne Malveaux The 17-person race for the Republican nomination for President closely resembles a clown show, starring Donald Trump. The unfortunate contrast to Trump has been the tepid rhetoric of Jeb Bush, and the usual antics of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Surgeon Ben Carson offered some diversity in the “big debate” a few weeks ago, and former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina amplified her profile and earned kudos for her performance at a debate the “lesser” candidates had. After the debate, each of the candidates has had plenty to say, and maybe some of them might have been better off had they said less. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, for example, said that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be “appalled” at the Black Lives Matter movement, saying it was wrong to “elevate” some lives above others. The poor, misguided man doesn’t get it, nor does he appear to have read much more of Dr. King’s 6

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 marks the forty-ninth year of the Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies, which began on September 8 in 1966 by offering its Master’s degree in Inner City Studies Education. In celebrating our forty-ninth year, CCICS will feature a lecture by Dr. Joyce E. King on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. The lecture will focus on the topic, “African People, Education, and Self-Determination: Examining the Works of Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers and Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III.” Dr. King is the renowned Benjamin E. Mays Endowed Chair for Urban Teaching at Georgia State University. The lecture will be held in the Dr. Donn F. Bailey Legacy Hall at CCICS, 700 East Oakwood Boulevard in Chicago, Illinois. The Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) was established in 1966 during the early years of Northeastern Illinois University, which was founded in 1963. Dr. Donald Smith, one of the few Black professors and the first Director of the Center, provided the leadership in conceiving the idea and mobilizing the university community to support this project. However, one former Director of CCICS, the late Dr. Donn Bailey, revealed, “The educational aspirations and demands of the

largely Black inner city community in the mid-1960s were so forcefully and compellingly put that one can say that the community sired the Center for Inner City Studies.” Outstanding educational leaders in the Chicago inner city, such as Dr. Barbara Sizemore, Dr. Anderson Thompson, and grassroots community residents, gave Dr. Smith the support he needed to convince the college that such a project was necessary. Federal funding was granted from the Office of Education that provided the initial support for two years before becoming a permanent part of the university’s academic programs. He then gathered a brilliant staff of inner city educators from Chicago and across the nation, who developed the initial graduate CCICS curriculum. This distinguished group included Dr. Nancy Arnez (the second director of the Center), Dr. Donn Bailey (the third director), Dr. Edward Barnes, and Dr. Sonja Stone (the first Chair of the Department of Inner City Studies Education). Dr. Carol Adams served as the director from 20002003 and I, Dr. Conrad Worrill have served as the director since 2003. The first CCICS program was the federal funded, Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program (ETFP), a Mas-

ter’s degree program for retraining inner city teachers, who were struggling to understand and serve the communities where they worked. The students came from many urban areas throughout the United States. In 1968, this innovative experiment led the College of Education to establish the Department of Inner City Studies Education, with two Master’s degree programs; an M.A. in Inner City Studies Education (ICSE) and an M.Ed. in Inner City Studies. In 1970-71, the Center’s undergraduate program evolved from another federally funded program, the Career Opportunities Program (COP). This program resulted in the full certification of four hundred inner city Teacher Aides, who had virtually sprung from the inner city in the wake of the urban rebellions of the 1960s. Under the leadership of two brilliant African Centered faculty members, the late Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers and Dr. Anderson Thompson, CCICS endeavored, for over 49 years to develop a curriculum philosophy and theoretical framework that examines social experience from an African Centered perspective. The rewards of these efforts have been enriching for the academic community world-wide, as well as the inner city community.

Through its curriculum arm, the Department of Inner City Studies Education (now an academic program in the Department of Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies) CCICS has successfully developed undergraduate and graduate programs. These programs combine Inner City Studies with a minor, Inner City Careers, African Caribbean Studies, experienced and prospective teacher programs, as well as the development of the Mexican/Caribbean Studies Minor, which has now become a major in Latin and Latin American Studies. Some of these programs led CCICS to the development of other major thrusts. African Caribbean Studies spawned the Kemetic Institute and the establishment of the African Study Tours, which broadened the CCICS curriculum to include on-going international student and faculty participation. Also, the Kemetic Institute sponsors the Teaching About Africa (TAA) Program aimed at providing teachers with curriculum material to be used in all subjects concerning the contributions of African people from ancient times to the present. The Career Opportunity Program of the early 1970s was the foundation of the ICSE under(Continued on page 16)

IS MIKE HUCKABEE SERIOUS? work than the “I Have a Dream” speech. King dealt with race matters directly. His 1967 Presidential address to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference explicitly deals with racial difference asking, “Where do we go from here?” Said King, “When the Constitution was written, a strange formula to determine taxes and representation declared that the Negro was sixty percent of a person. Today another curious formula seems to declare that he is fifty percent of a person. Of the good things in life, the Negro has approximately one half those of whites. Of the bad things of life, he has twice those of whites. Thus half of all Negroes live in substandard housing. And Negroes have half the income of whites. When we view the negative experiences of life, the Negro has a double share. There are twice as many unemployed. The rate of infant mortality among Negroes is double that of whites and there are twice as many Negroes dying in Vietnam as whites in proportion to their size in the population.” Little has changed

Dr. Julianne Malveaux in the 48 years since King addressed his colleagues at SCLC. Dr. King’s words seem to support the Black Lives Matter movement. “Where do we go from here? First, we must massively assert our dignity and worth. We must stand up amidst a system that still oppresses us and develop an unassailable and

majestic sense of values. We must no longer be ashamed of being Black. The job of arousing manhood within a people that have been taught for so many centuries that they are nobody is not easy.” Here is the Dr. King Mike Huckabee and the others who reject the Black Lives Matter movement, but quote Dr. King need to absorb his 1967 statement, “The tendency to ignore the Negro’s contribution to American life and to strip him of his personhood is as old as the earliest history books and as contemporary as the morning’s newspaper. To upset this cultural homicide, the Negro must rise up with an affirmation of his own Olympian manhood.” In other words, Mr. Huckabee, Dr. King said “Black Lives Matter.” Too many have tried to make Dr. King nonracial, stuck on only parts of the “I Have A Dream” speech. They don’t even bother to read that speech in its entirety, ignoring King’s discussion of economic inequality. Those whose very deficient knowledge of King’s work fail to understand

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

that the “dream” spoke to a future vision, not a contemporary reality. People like Huckabee would distort Dr. King’s words to serve their own purposes. It’s clear that Huckabee and others don’t understand the Black Lives Matter movement, or simply oppose it. Those who are open to learning, like Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, have met with leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement and have expanded their knowledge base. Others, like Huckabee, prefer to ignore the reality of police violence. As long as there is inequality, the Black Lives Matter movement makes a difference. If you don’t understand the reality of inequality in our nation, you have no business running for President of the United States. My advice to Mr. Huckabee – see if you can get your television show back. Your distortion of the King legacy won’t win you votes in some communities. ANITA AND TODD

ARE YOU SCARED YET???

Ima been hearing that Anita Alvarez done rubbed too many folks the wrong way and perhaps that is why she was not endorsed for States Attorney recently at the Democratic slaughter, I mean slating. What most of our folks say she ain’t done nothing but advance her folks. Many of us thought we might get a small boost in the office when a woman Hispanic was picked in the last two elections. Not so, and it’s been hard to find anyone the likes of us in most photos with the Grand Dame. Now

think he brought this treatment on himself when he acted so strange as President of the Cook County Board. Ima has to give it to him that he tried to get a 1 percent tax raise through that t’wasn’t so popular at the time, to have his successor push through this same tax. How ‘bout that for retribution? But he was not greeted with any enthusiasm, nor did he get the needed support to run for Commissioner of the Water Recla Recla er you know what I mean the Sanitary District. Dey done changed the Todd Stroger name, but it is still the cleaning Todd Stroger wasn’t treated so of the toilet water and sending it nice by his fellow Democrats ei- back into our houses. You know ther, but it’s hard for Ima not to what I mean. So what were they

Anita Alvarez

saying to Toad, er I mean Todd? That he wasn’t good enough to clean up do do?

Ima wants to know your answer to the headline of this piece: Are your scared yet? Ima and most of us folks of color has been waiting in the wings until the Republicans (white and the Black) sort out the things that front-runner Trump has been saying. Afterall most of us been saying it ain’t our fight. Or we ain’t got no dog in the fight. Trump talked under the clothes of the journalist-moderator at the first “debate.” And we sorta stayed out of it. And we had no comment when he said that most of immigrants from Mexico were low-lifes and the cause of most of the crime in the United States, although that kinda sounded familiar like how dey pegged us back in the 1800’s. But Ima sat up in her bed when Trump told the Mexican journalist who tried to ask him a question about his immigration plans if he becomes president. Trump told the reporter to “go back to Univision.” It could have easily been changed to “Go back to Mexico.” And too easy to be changed to “Go back to Africa.” Hmmmmm!!! Is you scared yet??

THE FREEDOM PRINCIPLE: EXPERIMENTS IN ART AND MUSIC, 1965 TO NOW AT THE MCA: This exhibit links the vibrant legacy of the 1960s 8

African American avant-garde to current art and culture, and is ONGOING at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) through November 22, 2015. It is occasioned in part by the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a still-flourishing organization of Chicago musicians whose interdisciplinary explorations expanded the boundaries of jazz. Alongside visual arts collectives such as the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA), the AACM was part of a deep engagement with Black cultural nationalism both in Chicago and around the world during and after the civil rights era. Combining historical materials with contemporary responses, The Freedom Principle illuminates the continued relevance of that engagement today. The exhibition, which takes its title from a 1984 book by Chicago jazz critic John Litweiler, showcases the multifaceted world of the Black avant-garde in Chicago during the 1960s alongside a selection of contemporary artists’ interpretations of this heritage. It includes works of music and art from, among others, AACM-founder, pianist, and painter Muhal Richard Abrams; Art Ensemble of Chicago bandleader Roscoe Mitchell; and AfriCOBRA cofounders Jeff Donaldson, Jae and Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara JonesHogu, and Gerald Williams. Archival materials—brochures, banners, photographs, posters, sheet music, record covers—provide a rich context for the exhibition. Recent works by artists such as Terry Adkins, Nick Cave, Renée Green, Rashid Johnson, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, Cauleen Smith, and Stan Douglas present an ongoing intergenerational conversation about experimentation, improvisation, collective action, and the search for freedom. Working together across multiple platforms, Catherine Sullivan, George Lewis, Charles Gaines, and Sean Griffin are collaborating on an opera, to be presented on the MCA Stage, and on a related installation within the exhibition. A listening station and an online microsite accompany the exhibition, as does a fully illustrated catalogue that includes essays by exhibition curators Naomi Beckwith and Dieter Roelstraete, as well as by leading musicians, composers, artists, and scholars. The Freedom Principle is organized by Naomi Beckwith, Marilyn and Larry Fields, Curator; and Dieter Roelstraete, Manilow Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 220 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago IL 60611. For more information, please call 312-2802660.

Constructed in 1923, the building was previously Stony Island Trust & Savings Bank, located between Chicago’s Greater Grand Crossing and South Shore neighborhoods. The city was

ready to demolish it; Gates couldn’t let it go. The cost for this fixer-upper, with its grand, fluted columns and brick exterior: $1. Gates wasn’t totally sure what he wanted to do with the bank initially. The final concept would ultimately be the Stony Island Bank Arts Bank, which will open to the public on October 3, the same day that the Chicago

State of Black Homeownership: More denials than access to mortgages By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist This week in Houston, the nation’s oldest minority professional real estate trade association held its 68th annual convention. Founded in July 1947, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) grew from a fledgling group of one woman and 11 men from only eight locales, into today’s national network of mortgage professionals and an estimated conference attendance of more than 1,000. Long before civil rights legislation was introduced in Congress, NAREB stood for all those who believed that owning a home in America should be both affordable and obtainable; but were somehow locked out of their own American Dream. That kind of leadership and service deserve a celebration. In spite of restrictive covenants commonplace as early as the 1940s, to the years of block-busting and white flight of the 1960s, NAREB and other housing advocates held fast to their founding principles and never gave up or gave out. The irony is that today despite their dedication and advocacy of other housing groups - or even federal laws that guarantee equality and

www.chicagocrusader.com

protections in housing and credit regardless of race or creed — the American Dream is still elusive, especially for consumers of color. Nationwide, Black America’s homeownership is shrinking. A 2013 NAREB report entitled, “The State of Housing in Black America,” found that Black homeownership rates dropped from a high level just of under 50 percent in 2004 to 43 percent by 2013. By late 2014, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 42 percent of Black families were homeowners, more than 22 percentage points lower than that of the nation (64 percent) and 30 percentage points lower than that of whites (72 percent). The obvious question is: Why is Black homeownership shrinking? An analysis by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) of the most recent Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) report for 2013 showed that both Black and Latino homebuyers are typically denied access to private sector conventional mortgages that over the life of a loan are far cheaper than the government-backed offerings. Little access to private conventional loans leaves consumers of color with disproportionately high use of mort-

Charlene Crowell gages underwritten by governmentbacked programs such as FHA, VA and USDA. Those entrusted with leadership positions must develop answers to these and other housing dilemmas. This national problem, as analyzed by CRL, deserves a response equal to its challenge: • Blacks received in 2013 only 36,903 loans - just 4.8 percent of all purchase mortgage originations that year, despite the Black population at 13.6 percent, exceeded 39 million

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

residents. • Hispanic white borrowers received slightly more mortgage originations at 7.3 percent of all purchase mortgage originations in 2013, even though they represent 16.6 percent of the population and over 51 million people. • Similarly, in refinance mortgage lending, Black borrowers received only 191,004 – only 4.4 percent of more than 4.3 million the previous year. This comparatively low level of lending continues a trend that began after the nation’s housing crisis. “When families receive responsible mortgage loans, they are able to build a financial safety net that they can access during challenging times,” noted Keith Corbett, a NAREB panelist and executive vice president with the Center for Responsible Lending. “For most Black families, owning a home is the key building block for their financial security. Until we raise the level of Black homeownership, it is doubtful we will see racial wealth gaps closing either.” Earlier CRL research found that many homebuyers of color were steered into higher-cost, subprime loans – even when they qualified for cheaper ones. After analyzing 50,000 subprime loans, CRL con-

cluded that Blacks and Latinos were almost a third more likely to receive a higher-priced loan than were whites with the same credit scores. Additionally, research by the Center for Community Capital at the University of North Carolina found that borrowers of color and lowwealth families who received safe mortgages that were fully-underwritten during the housing crisis saw their home equity appreciate by $23,000. Earlier this summer Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies released its annual State of the Nation’s Housing report. Its findings show even more disparities in homeownership: • Despite the housing rebound in many parts of the nation, minority and low-income neighborhoods remain severely distressed. • As of 2014, the homeownership rate for minorities as a group remains 25.5 percentage points lower than that of whites. • More than 40 percent of Hispanic and Black households with mortgages report paying interest rates above 5 percent, compared with less than a third of white and Asian/other minority households. “All of these findings along with (Continued from page 16)

Michael Jordan to donate $8.9M award to charity By J. Coyden Palmer Basketball legend Michael Jordan said he will donate to charity the $8.9 million that he received from a lawsuit where he accused the defunct Dominick’s Supermarket chain of promoting a product without his permission. A jury deliberated for six hours before they decided to award Jordan the amount on Friday, August 20. The decision capped two weeks of curiosity as fans staked out spots everyday outside of the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago to catch a glimpse of what many believed to be the greatest and richest basketball player of all time. Dressed in one of his trademark charcoal business suits and a gray tie, which he regularly wore during press conferences after games during his NBA career, Michael Jordan took the stand in a downtown federal courtroom Aug. 18 and explained why he was suing the former local grocery store chain for using his likeness without his permission. Jordan, 52, told the jury he knew nothing about a Dominick’s coupon that appeared in a

2009 Sports Illustrated commemorative edition celebrating his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He said it was an infringement on his rights and he protects his image ferociously. Jordan also added the Dominick’s ad was not a big enough deal for him to have even considered doing. “I don’t do any deals that are less than $10 million,” Jordan proclaimed. “I also talk with my financial team and my mother before I sign on to any business endorsements.” The $10 million minimum was based on Jordan’s economic worth, according to an economist who testified earlier at his trial. Jordan testified he has the final say on any endorsement deals. Jordan, the owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, said he was following good business practices by filing the lawsuit. Publicly, Jordan had been criticized as being greedy because he is suing Dominick’s for millions. But Jordan said it is not about the money, it is the principle. “I’m quite comfortable,” Jordan replied, when asked by the Dominick’s attorney during cross-examination about his lifestyle after

MICHAEL JORDAN IS photographed as he quickly leaves the Dirksen Federal Building following his testimony. (Photo by Stephanie Parks) his retirement from basketball. In the magazine ad, Dominick’s used Jordan’s name and jersey number, which congratulated Jordan on his Hall of Fame induction. The ad reads: “Michael Jordan, you are a cut above.” The ad offered a $2 coupon for steak. Dominick’s has since gone out of business, but the chain’s parent com-

pany, Safeway was named as the defendant. Dominick’s had already been found at fault for using the Hall of Famer’s image. The trial was about how much money does the company owe Jordan in damages. Dominick’s believes this case is about unlawful use of a licensing agreement and not an endorsement

contract, which has greater value. Attorneys for Dominick’s say the damage is closer to the $500,000 range, not the $10 million Jordan is asked for. During the trial, jurors learned that Jordan made $100 million in endorsements in the year of 2014 alone, according to the testimony of his business manager Curtis Polk.

Pain, emotions persist on the 60th Anniversary of Emmett Till’s death (Continued from page 1) together one of the largest gathering of Black Civil Rights leaders, clergyman, politicians, and community activists in the history of Chicago and perhaps the nation. For three days, Till’s brutal murder will once again stir up pain

about empowering the lives and future of youth, who like Emmett, are growing up in a racially troubled world. With the recent deaths of Civil Rights leaders, Julian Bond and Congressman Louis Stokes, a younger generation of leaders is rising up to con-

With recent police killings of young Black males and hate crimes against Blacks across the nation, the problems continue to fuel fears that not much has changed for Blacks seeking justice and civil rights. But, the weekend will also be 10

front present and future problems of race relations in America. Many will attend the anniversary events to inspire scores of mothers and fathers of young Blacks who have died across the country in highly-publicized shootings and killings. They include the parents and families of Rekia Boyd, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Kendrick John-

son, Oscar Grant, and Jordan Davis. Many will listen to speeches from the Nation of Islam’s leader Minister Louis Farrakhan, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Reverend Al Sharpton, Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina, Congressman Bobby Rush (D-1st), and many other prominent leaders. In addition, the 60th anniversary ceremony will also include numerous hip-hop artists, educators, gospel singers, and community activists. The weekend kicked off at noon on Friday, August 28 with a motorcade procession to Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip where Emmett is buried. Dignitaries, city and state officials will participate in a family ceremony that will include a wreath-laying ceremony amid tributes and musical performances. At 7 p.m., Minister Farrakhan was the keynote speaker at the Legacy Lives - Emmett Till Remembrance Dinner at the Hyatt Regency McCormick, 2233 S. Martin Luther King. From noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, prominent filmmaker Keith Beauchamp, who produced a film about Till’s murder, will join Dream Defender leader, Daniel Agnew, and dozens of activists for a Youth Empowerment Day at the Reva & David Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th Street. The event is free. The weekend will close with a

“Gospel Regeneration” at 3 p.m. at the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, 4021 S. State Street. The church was the site of Emmett’s funeral. In Chicago, several other 60th anniversary events are planned. On Thursday, August 26 Chaz Ebert, the wife of the late film critic Roger Ebert, will give a lecture entitled, “Black Lives Matter, Then and Now,” at the DuSable Museum of African American History, 740 E. 56th Place. The ceremonies come as film and recording artists across America prepare to honor Till with their own projects. This week, Academy Award winner, Whoopi Goldberg, announced plans to team up with Beauchamp to launch a fundraising project to produce “Till,” a new documentary and drama based on the Emmett Till murder in 1955. Filming is expected to begin in early 2016. The story will be based on Beauchamp’s Emmy-nominated film, “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till,” a documentary that prompted the United States Justice Department to reopen the case in 2004. Earlier this month, Will Smith and hip-hop mogul, Jay Z, announced their intentions to help produce an HBO series based on Mamie Till Mobley’s book she worked on during the last six months of her life. In addition, Florida State Uni-

versity officials announced plans to create an Emmett Till archive. The archives will include court documents, interview transcripts and oral histories of how Emmett was killed when he was kidnapped by two white men and brutally beaten before he was shot in the head and thrown in the Tallahatchie River with a cotton gin fan tied around his neck. Emmett’s death would galvanize millions during the Civil Rights Movement after pictures of his mutilated remains were published in Jet magazine. America’s mainstream press would follow suit. For five days, the eyes of the world were on Chicago as the city’s large Black community mourned Emmett’s tragic death. During his funeral, an estimated 50,000 people viewed his body in a glass-encased casket. Less than two weeks after Emmett was buried at Burr Oak Cemetery, his murderers—J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant—were tried, but acquitted by an allwhite jury on September 23, 1955. The two later confessed to the murder in Look magazine. Milam died of cancer in 1980, and Bryant died of cancer in 1995. In 2005, Till’s body was exhumed and autopsied after the U.S. Justice Department announced it would reopen the case. In 2007, Tallahatchie County officials issued a formal apology to Till's family. www.chicagocrusader.com

Blacks in New Orleans still lag behind on the 10th Anniversary of Katrina (Continued from page 1) through and tore up everything in sight. There was nothing left to salvage. I broke down because I had a life in that place.” Richardson returned in 2011. “I was excited because downtown looked the same, if not better,” she said. “You would have never guessed Katrina came through there. Then I got to the Ninth Ward and my heart just sank. It wasn’t as bad as that first time, but it still looked like a hurricane had been through there. It made me cry.” She returned again in spring. “I was praying to see rebuilt houses, more families—signs that real change had been made. But I saw only a little. Not enough. So many houses are just ruined and still ruined. But in other places in New Orleans, places that were hit just as hard, you can never tell anything happened.” Richardson is not alone in her observations. A wide gap exists along racial lines about attitudes regarding New Orleans’ recovery, according to a survey by Louisiana State University with 41 percent of whites said living in New Orleans improved since the hurricane clean up, while less than 20 percent of African Americans feel things are better. ‘We are unique’

"We don't talk the way anybody else talks, we don't dance the way anybody else [dances],” Landrieu said while touring Atlanta. “They don't eat the way we eat. They don't hug the way we hug. They don't love the (same) way. It's just different. And it's wonderful. I love Houston. Houston's one of the great cities in the world. I love Atlanta. But you know what? New Orleans does not want to be Houston or Atlanta. What we want to be is the best version of our real selves, because we are unique." Unique does not mean better for many Africa Americans living in the Ninth Ward, where homeowners either walked away from their destroyed properties or relocated to Houston, Atlanta and other cities. Many failed to receive enough insurance money, if any, to repair the vast destruction. The city did receive $70 billion in federal aid for $150 billion in damages but a tour of the city revealed what neighborhoods were left on the sidelines. “When you have that kind of gap (in monetary aid),” Landrieu conceded, “not everyone gets everything all the time.” The mayor pointed to the refurbishing of the Mercedes Benz Super Dome—where 30,000 mostly African Americans endured six days

Fans flock to filming to get a piece of “Empire” Locals drawn to Popular FOX drama as filming continues in Chicago By Erick Johnson After waiting two hours, Lucious finally appeared. Looking dapper in a two-piece suit, Terrance Howard, who plays the hip hop mogul and patriarch of the Lyons clan on FOX’s “Empire,” came out of First Baptist Congregational Church on the Near West Side Thursday, August 20, where several die hard fans screamed and jockeyed to take pictures and selfies with the A-list star. Cameras snapped and women swooned as Howard began his lunch break with screaming “Empire” fans after spending the entire morning on Thursday filming a scene at the 144-year old church at 1613 West Washington. The activities wrapped up two days of filming “Empire,” a show

whose scenes are filmed at various locations in Chicago. The show appeals heavily to Blacks with its star-studded cast that includes real-life celebrities, high drama and the rollercoaster lives of the Lyons family. At the head of clan is Lucious Lyon, a businessman with swag who built “Empire,” a hip hop music company, where siblings are embroiled in a power struggle to take over the fledging, multimillion dollar record powerhouse. The rivalries electrified the show’s first season, which started last January. In just several months, “Empire” became one of FOX’s highest rated shows. But with a wild, season-ending cliffhanger that kept millions of American viewers guessing, anticipation is building among fans who are eager to learn the fate of some of the characters when the show begins its second season September 23. Barbara Wright-Pryor Remembering William Warfield (January 22, 1920 – August 25, 2002) It was thirteen years ago on August 25 that word came announcing the death of William Warfield who had been hospitalized since July 31 after suffering a fall at home. The world-famous bass-baritone, known as “Uncle Bill” to friends and students alike, sustained broken vertebrae in his neck after tripping over the entrance to the elevator in his South Shore apartment building and seemed to be “coming along nicely,” as he would say in his usual comical way, when he succumbed to a heart attack. William Warfield, acclaimed throughout the world as one of the greatest vocal artists of our times, was a star in every field open to a singer’s art. His recital debut in New York’s Town Hall on March 19, 1950 put him in the forefront of concert artists overnight. Immediately following the Town Hall de-

Through the years critics commented that William Warfield’s superiority as a recitalist stemmed from his unusual acting ability which propelled him to the lead role in the Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess” opposite soprano Leontyne Price, whom he married in1952 before the cast departed on a European tour. The couple divorced in 1974 but remained lifelong friends. Warfield received critical acclaim for his many onstage roles, recitals and films, especially in the role of Joe, the dockhand in the Edna Ferber-Jerome Kern production of “Show Boat.” His performance of “Ol Man River” immediately became his signature song and was requested by more audiences than any other. He earned many awards and honorary doctorate degrees and performed in countless recitals and concerts and made numerous solo appearances with symphony orchestras in singing and non-singing roles. He made six separate tours for the U. S. Department of State, more than any other American solo artist. He won a Grammy Award in the spoken word category for his narration of Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait,” and sang and recorded Copland’s “Old American Songs composed in his honor with the composer accompanying him on the piano. His autobiography, “William Warfield: My Music and My Life,” was published in 1972. Like Marian Anderson, Roland Hayes and Paul Robeson, before him, William Warfield was a staunch advocate of performing the music of Black composers and Negro spirituals in recitals and concerts. He was a

He was a trustee of the Music Institute of Chicago and received its prestigious Dushkin Award. The Institute established a music scholarship in his name for students of color following his death. He sang the bass solos in Chicago’s Monumental Baptist Church’s annual performances of Handel’s “Messiah” from 1967 onward. William Warfield turned increasingly toward teaching and in 1975 he was appointed Professor of Music at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. He retired in 1990 as Chair of the Voice Department and served as a visiting professor before joining the faculty of Northwestern University’s School of Music (now the Bienen School of Music) in 1994 where he remained until his death. He performed many concerts and recitals on Northwestern’s Pick-Staiger stage, the most memorable being the one that celebrated his 80th birthday in 2000. William Warfield was buried in the family plot in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, NY. Chicago Music Association presented a Tribute to the life of William Warfield on October 25, 2002 at the Monumental Baptist Church, Chicago, that was attended by family members, present and former students, colleagues, and musical associates who came from far and near to share in the celebration and say goodbye to a truly remarkable man who had become a legend in our time. ******** Jerry Tietz named concert management director at NU’s Bienen School of Music Jerry Tietz was appointed director of concert management for the Bienen School of Music effective June 15, 2015. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe A very important reminder “It’s okay to un-follow people in real life...” Think about it—who are you following, where are they going and more importantly, where are you going? To un-follow someone is especially popular on social medias such as instagram and twitter. Some popular celebrities can easily have over 10 million people following them. Most of these followers are the first to read the posts and to view the pictures of their favorite celebrities. Even on Facebook when someone has a post that constantly appears in the news feed, some people will follow that person, not because they know them but simply because their posts are being liked by others. Thus, they begin to follow them as well. The only motivation is a sense of being connected and not missing out. It’s similar to everyone wanting to be associated

Effie Rolfe with the most popular girl or guy in high school.

One of my former co-workers referred to popularity as “the flavor of the month.” News Flash— the people who follow you can just as quickly ‘un-follow’ you.’ In real life, this can be a dangerous trend. Too often, people think they are part of the ‘in-crowd’ simply by following the crowd. (Not true!) It is important to realize that following the crowd is not always right or the best choice. What’s right isn’t always popular and what’s popular isn’t always right. “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:14). Additionally, people value their worth on the amount of followers they have. Not realizing that people may click un-friend or un-follow just as fast as they hit friend or follow. Self worth is not determined on the size of your fan base. Unfortunately, in life too many people go with the crowds not realizing that it’s not about what or

who is popular, but rather the purpose and plan God has for you. Each person has a different fingerprint and a different life print. What’s right for you may be a totally opposite path that God has purposed for me to take. Please know that God has a definite purpose and plan for you, which is intentional. “For I know the plans I have for you said the Lord, thoughts to prosper you and not to harm you—to give you a hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11.) Now is a great opportunity to stop and monitor who is in front of you. Is the path you are taking leading you to your true calling? Are you using your God given gifts and talents? Is your journey taking you closer to your goals and destination? If not, perhaps it’s time for you to click the mouse to un-friend and un-follow some people. Also, don’t be alarmed if what God has called you to do will

cause others to un-friend and unfollow you, as well. While you can’t control the actions of others—you will have to draw the line and be responsible for your own actions. Don’t forget—a strong man or woman sometimes stand alone. So it’s perfectly okay to take the road less traveled. Life is not a dress rehearsal. Today is a good time to pray, meditate and seek direction for your life’s purpose—right here and right now. In the end—you will have to answer to God if you choose not to friend and follow Him. What friends are you following…? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. In addition to the new EP, be sure to catch Travis performing on BET’s Sunday Best Live Finale on Sunday, August 30 and at the New York Empowerment Summit on Saturday, September 5. For 31 year old singer/songwriter

Travis Greene, destiny announced itself several times. Travis entered into this world with complications that threatened his survival. At the age of four, he was pronounced dead after falling four floors out of an apartment window in Germany. As his mother picked up the lifeless body of her child, she called on Jesus over-andover, praying until he came back to life. These near fatal and precious testimonials of life preface the anointing of a young man destined to minister to the world. Growing up in a military family in various parts of the world, Travis used music as an outlet to overcome many heart-breaking and crucial life experiences. Through his own broad style of music and ministry, Travis accepts the personal challenge to continually unify the body of Christ as one. The passion that dwells in him allows him to use his gifts as an instrument to help, heal and bring positive change to the lives of God’s people. Travis, his wife Jackie, and their son, David Jace, currently reside in Charlotte, North Carolina. **** Condolences to the family, church members and friends of Mother Gussie Southern of Grace Apostolic Faith Church in Chicago. WORLD OF MUSIC (Cont’d from page 14) Lyric’s American Musical Theater Initiative, Rodg- ers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I,” will receive its Lyric premiere in a lavish production April 29-May 22, at the end of the season. “I’m thrilled to be conducting the world-premiere performances of “Bel Canto,” and my first-ever performances of “Wozzeck” (finally!),” Davis said earlier this year. “And for something completely different, I’m delighted to lead this production of “The Merry Widow” directed and

choreographed by Susan Stroman, which I just conducted when it premiered at the Metropolitan Opera last January with Renée Fleming – it’s a lavish and charming production! And I also get to conduct “Cenerentola” (Cinderella) for the first time in a fun production out of Houston!” Barbara Gaines, founder and artistic director of Chicago Shakespeare Theater will return to direct the new production of “The Marriage of Figaro.” Debuting directors next season include Daniele Abbado (“Nabucco”) and

Bartlett Sher (“Romeo and Juliet”). Two special performances will present beloved Lyric artists and frequent musical partners Ana María Mart- ínez and Plácido Domingo in concert with Sir Andrew Davis and the Lyric Opera Orchestra, and Dmitri Hvo- rostovsky will return in recital with pianist Ivari Ilja. Tickets range from $49$750 for the Opening Night Performance. The Pederson Room and Florian Bis- tro

program. Indeed, many of our graduates have attained high positions in the institutions that serve the inner city from the public schools and other educational institutions as teachers and administrators, to city administration, law enforcement and correctional administration, municipal and circuit court judges, and a variety of social service agencies, both private and public. Thus, the ideas generated at CCICS are now a part of the thinking of many of those who are in leadership positions throughout America. It is important that we be-

come experts on the trends and developments of the inner city. For those who are interested in pursuing an academic career that deals with the problems and prospects of the inner city from an African Centered perspective, take advantage of this “Academic Goldmine.” Contact the Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies for a full orientation on how to become part of this established academic discipline. We hope to see you on September 18th as we celebrate forty-nine-years of academic and community excellence. The Carruthers Center should endure for the next fifty-years by continuing in its established tradition.

Lyric patrons attending the Opening Night Gala performance are also invited to purchase tickets to the Black-tie Opera Ball which follows immediately at The Hilton and Towers, 720 S. Michigan Ave. Special price packages are available. Call 312-827-5600 or go to lyricopera.org.

Additionally, in recent years, CCICS has established the Illinois Transatlantic Slave Trade Commission Project (ITSTC) that conducts on-going research on the slave trade and its continued impact on African people and the world. The Great Black Music

Project (GBMP) is another addition to the vibrant research and programmatic trust of CCICS in preserving the great Black music developed out of this community. From our base of service to the community, CCICS has become a leader in the educational community. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) Jackie Robinson West Little League team has raised during its championship run. Chicagoans and people from across the country chipped in more than $300,000. Yes that is a large amount for a kid’s baseball team, but it is what it is. Given that no one, not even Bears QB Jay Cutler is asking for their money back; it is a non-issue. Cutler donated $15,000. The JRW people have not said what they will do with all of the cash raised. They are under no obligation to do so. It 16

would be smart from a community standpoint to tell us where the money is going, but it is not required. The more stories we see like the Sun-Times’ the greater the blame is being laid on the youngsters. Those kids did what they signed up to do and that is play ball. They happened to play it better than most and that was the basis for some disgruntled, sore loser coach to get the victories rescinded and a new Little League champion named.

JRW will always be champions in my heart. Maybe it was $5 I sent or $50, I don’t rightfully remember. Whatever they got from me they are welcome to keep. I trust they know how to handle the money better than the Sun-Times or any of the team’s detractors. The Sun-Times would serve its readers better by seeking out and reporting on real news. 37th Anniversary of Habilitative Systems, Inc. WGN’s Gloria Brown receives the Freeing the Human Spirit Award Habilitative Systems, Inc. (HSI) celebrated its 37th Anniversary with a jazz and blues fundraiser at Buddy Guy’s Legends in August. The social services agency provides quality health and human services to thousands of Chicago’s neediest residents, including peo-

ple with disabilities, seniors, at risk children and youth, and adults with mental illness and substance abuse problems. HSI has programs in 15 locations throughout Chicago’s metropolitan area. HSI’s Blues/Jazz with Pizzazz Café was held at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago’s South Loop. The event featured live performances by New Black Renais-

sance known for providing the best of today’s R&B, blues, jazz and neo soul and a dinner buffet of Buddy Guy’s soulfully delicious foods. HSI’s guests were invited to bring their own instrument to participate in Buddy Guy’s Legends “Jam Session.” WGN-TV anchor Micah Materre hosted the event’s program. HSI Board Member Gloria Brown, trail-blazing producer and business manager for WGN-TV who retired after 48 years of service, was presented the agency’s Freeing the Human Spirit Award in “recognition of her many years of

dedication and service” to HSI. In addition, for the first time HSI presented its Unsung Hero Award to a valued volunteer who worked behind the scenes on behalf of HSI clients and the community. “Clearly, our challenging economic climate in Chicago and Illinois has further compounded the plight of those with the greatest need in our communities,” said Donald J. Dew, President and CEO of HSI. “As the city and state struggle with critical budget issues, organizations such as HSI that assist our most disadvantaged people are hit the hardest. Our

programs are essential and have saved Illinois millions of dollars over the years.” Cynthia Washington, HSI’s former board chairman who chaired the event said, “Our communities are suffering during this budget crisis! Important programs are being shut down, resulting in a huge loss of services for the most vulnerable and underserved populations in Chicago. We need to subsidize these losses by hosting events like Jazz with Pizzazz! This is deeper than just having a ‘good time.’ It’s truly about saving lives!”

GLORIA BROWN, RECENTLY retired producer and business manager at WGN-TV, was presented the Freeing the Human Spirit Award by Habilitative Systems Inc. at its Blues/Jazz with Pizzazz Café fundraiser at Buddy Guy's Legends. Presenting award to Gloria are HSI Board Chair Melvin Brooks and HSI President/CEO Donald J. Dew. CONGRATULATING GLORIA ON her award are media colleagues Deborah Brown Farmer, Yolanda Joe, Brenda Butler, Val West, Lynn Norment and Micah Materre, WGN anchor who emceed the event.
