Unified teachers taking on “bully” Emanuel By J. Coyden Palmer After months of taking shots at the Chicago Teachers Union with attack radio ads and a strained relationship with Union President Karen Lewis, first-term Mayor Rahm Emanuel is getting the backlash for his style in leadership as 30,000 teachers walked off the job for the first time in 25 years on Sept. 10 after a contract agreement could not be reached. The strike means nearly 400,000 students are not in classrooms in the city’s over 700 schools. The strike has also sent parents scrambling looking for places to take their kids as negotiators from both sides try and hammer out an agreement. Mayor Emanuel blamed the union by saying “this strike didn’t have to happen.” His comments infuriated teachers and their supporters who fought back by saying more than money; they want “respect” from the mayor and his appointed school board members. At Crusader press time, Emanuel claims there were only two issues separating the two sides from an agreement. “This is not the right thing to do to the children,” he said. “It’s unnecessary. It’s avoidable and it’s wrong.” But Lewis said there were more issues and the Mayor’s comments show how out of touch he is. She said there are several issues teachers have a problem with, including
hot classrooms, a teacher evaluation system with too much emphasis on test scores, rehiring laid off teachers and the power of principals to fire teachers they consider underperforming. “They came and asked us what it would take to settle this and we told them…so I
don’t understand why we could not have had an agreement when they have known what our bottom line is for quite sometime,” Lewis said. “Until there is a contract in place that our members will accept we will be on the line. Teacher evaluations and the recalling of
laid-off teachers are two of the biggest issues preventing a deal from being reached, said board member and president of the Chicago Urban League Andrea Zopp on Tuesday. Zopp defended Emanuel and the board, saying they have done “exactly what (Continued on page 2)

Churches assist students during teachers’ strike By Wendell Hutson The faith-based community has stepped up to receive students affected by the teachers’ strike, which began four days ago. At Crusader press time, negotiations between the school district and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) had progressed but not enough to end the strike, according to
David Vitale, president of the Chicago School Board. On Monday, the first day teachers walked off the job, 1,440 students found their way to 59 churches that are open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to Chicago Public Schools (CPS) officials. And unlike the 149 schools that are open from (Continued on page 7)

tently as panelists analyzed why Chicago’s streets have become so violent over the past two decades. “It breaks my heart when I hear media reports about young people innocently dying on the street for no reason,” Jackson said. “I mean, to know that you saw your friend earlier today and find out tomorrow they was murdered, does something to you. I cannot begin to tell you how many of my friends have been killed this year. I wonder how many more will be killed and if I will be one of the unlucky ones the next time.” The panelists for the two-hour forum included Felicia Davis, mayoral first deputy chief of staff; Bishop James Dukes, Liberation Christian Center; Fr. Michael Pfleger, pastor, St. Sabina Church; Alfonza Wysinger, first deputy superintendent, Chicago Police Department; and Minister Ishmael Muhammad, national assistant minister for the Nation of Islam. The forum moderator was Tio Hardiman, director of Ceasefire Illinois, a Chicago non-
profit, anti-violence organization. Chicago Urban League President and Chief Executive Officer Andrea Zopp, said more public forums are needed so people, especially youth, can vent and offer solutions. “The youth are the ones being killed on the streets. They are the ones growing up without a father. As a community we must help our youth stay in school, find jobs and remain on the right path of life,” Zopp said. Since July on several Mondays the Nation of Islam has the “Fruit of Islam” going door-to-door in several neighborhoods experiencing higher-than-usual violence, and talking with residents about reducing the incidents. “Before we can begin to discuss solutions about youth violence we must first identify the root of the problem and that cannot be done if we hold public meetings where the media is allowed access,” Muhammad said. “Let’s lock the doors, come to the table for ‘real’ dialogue and not ‘soap box’ agendas, so we can discuss how to protect our families from the enemy.” Wysinger added that as a first deputy superintendent he is now in a position to help foster relationships between Chicago police and community organizations like the Chicago Urban League and Ceasefire. “I am a kid who lived in the North Lawndale and Austin communities (on the West Side) and the Englewood community (on the South Side). So don’t tell me I do not know what challenges are crippling our communities because I have lived it first hand,” Wysinger said when someone questioned what took the police so long to begin working with Black organizations. Davis, a former Chicago police officer, echoed Wysinger’s sentiments. “For the first time the city and Cook County are working in collaboration to combat crime,” she said. “And if we are going to reduce violence and keep it that way, we have got to pool our resources together.” According to Hardiman, 90 percent of the people out here shooting people are cowards! “It does not take much to shoot someone in the back rather than try to resolve your differences with them like a man,” added Hardiman, a former gang member. Muhammad explained that so many Blacks are killing people as a result of their history. “As a race Blacks have always been subjected to poverty, injustice and inferior education, and when someone historically has come from this background it should be no surprise that they act out violently,” Muhammad said. “But with unity, we can solve 95 percent of our problems.”
they said they would do from the start.” She explained the money from the four percent raise teachers did not get last year went to making sure the system could have early childhood education. “We have shifted the focus of priorities from the needs of the adults in the building to the needs and interest of the kids,” Zopp said. “It does not mean the adults in the building are not critically important and relevant, but it does mean we have to make our decisions on what is going to drive better education.” As teachers picketed downtown in front of school board headquarters at 125 S. Clark this week, a group of concerned parents and community groups held a press conference in support of the teachers. Parents and many community groups say teachers are not being given the resources that they need to meet the standards Emanuel wants. They say schools without air conditioning, schools without books on the first days of classes and some schools not even having enough money to buy toilet tissue are all things that affect learning. “It’s unfortunate that it has come to this point but we know that this did not happen in a vacuum. The plan that CPS has put together is just as hodgepodge as everything else they have done over the past 10 years,” said Jitu Brown, education organizer for the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization. “They’ve had a revolving door of leadership. They’ve forced failed policies down our throats and then there is no accountability. So when they say teachers should-

She said too many youth choose to pick up a gun and shoot someone instead when they get upset “All that wasted energy pulling the trigger and killing someone when they could have been at home baking a cake or doing something more constructive,” Larry told the Crusader. “They (youth) need to find other ways to express their anger.” The 15 year-old Lindblom Math and Science Academy High School student was among 100 people who attended a youth forum this week at the Chicago Urban League, 4510 S. n’t strike, I think teachers shouldn’t take anymore. Neighborhoods and teachers should stand together. CPS is getting out of the neighborhood schools business. I trust a teacher more than I trust a venture capitalist who thinks I’m a peasant and doesn’t even respect my input.” Other parents and education advocates also spoke, saying the board has lied to them in the past about things promised to them. They say over 100 schools do not have a library and 90 schools do not have playgrounds, even though Emanuel said during his press conference late Monday night that all grammar schools have a recess period and schools that have one hour of reading and one hour of writing have improved test scores. But where children are reading and writing with no library is a question Erica Clark, a representative for the group Parents for Teachers wants answered. “We have 160 schools without libraries, most of them are south of North Avenue and another 90 without playground,” Clark began. “There are sweltering hot and overcrowded classrooms. We’ve been to board meetings, had sitins, written letters and parents have even occupied a school, but the board and Emanuel are not listening. So we stand here today in solidarity with the teachers because we know our children deserve better.” Emanuel has also questioned the legality of the strike. He believes the union is striking over issues not covered under state law. Lewis however disagreed and said the union has done everything leading
up to the call for a strike for the last several months. “We have a completely legal work stoppage,” said Lewis Tuesday morning before heading into the negotiations. Emanuel and his supporters, which include the over 100 charter schools in Chicago, have criticized CTU for locking students out of the classroom with a strike. They say it is damaging to the learning process. But others disagree and say the work stoppage is necessary to make a better school system in the present and future. “Yes the strike may be disruptive, but we have to interrupt this unfair system in order to fight for justice for the schools our children so rightfully deserve,” said Michelle Young, President of Action Now and Vice President of the Local School Council at May Academy. “The truth is CPS policies disrupt the education process more than anything else. On Emanuel’s watch, CPS has continued to starve our schools of resources.” Brown added that given the current physical conditions of many schools and the lack of books to teach curriculum, the children are getting a better education being out of school. “We would rather our children miss a few days of school and learn what it’s like to standup for your rights then to continue to go to schools that are sabotaged by the school district that dares to use as its slogan, ‘children first,’” Brown said. “They talk about wanting to stop school bullying when Mayor Emanuel is the biggest bully in town.” Crusader will continue to follow this developing story. NEWS Autopsy report finds fault with Planned Parenthood in woman’s death By J. Coyden Palmer The cause of death to a 24-yearold West Side woman in July after a medical procedure at a local Planned Parenthood has been ruled an accident by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. The autopsy report said an ill-fated abortion procedure caused the death of Tonya Reaves at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on July 20 after she began to bleed heavily at the Planned Parenthood clinic at 18 S. Michigan Ave. According to the medical examiner’s report, she died of “a hemorrhage following a cervical dilation and evacuation performed during an intrauterine pregnancy.” Reaves mother is suing Planned Parenthood and Northwestern claiming among other things that their inaction to monitor her daughter after her procedure contributed to her death. A timeline of what happened on that fateful day is as follows, according to published documents obtained by the Thomas More
Society and Pro Life Action League. At 11 a.m. the abortion procedure began. After the procedure, Reaves began suffering from heavy bleeding, and a fire department ambulance took her to Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 4:30 p.m. Then at 5:30 p.m., doctors performed an ultrasound, and another abortion was conducted at Northwestern. Reaves still complained of pain and was suffering from internal bleeding. Another ultrasound revealed a 3/16 inch uterine perforation near forceps impression marks. At 10:12 p.m., Reaves was taken back to surgery where “an uncontrollable bleed was discovered.” Reaves was pronounced dead while in surgery just over an hour later, at 11:20 p.m. She suffered an “extensive perforation of her broad uterine ligament with a possible severing of her left uterine artery as a result of her abortion,” according to the autopsy report. Reaves’ death is now a point of political conversation for those against abortion,
Tonya Reaves which has been legal in the United States since the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Rowe versus Wade. Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation, wants criminal charges filed against Planned Parenthood and the doctors who performed
Reaves’ botched abortion. Reaves was 16 weeks pregnant. The autopsy report also reveals that 1.5 liters of blood were discovered inside of Reaves abdomen. The human body holds five liters of blood. “We strongly believe that criminal charges such as Depraved Indifference, Criminal Negligence, and Criminal Malpractice are applicable in this case and we again call for a criminal investigation into the death of Tonya Reaves,” Newman said this week via telephone. According to the medical examiner’s report, Reaves suffered from an incomplete abortion. The medical examiner discovered pieces of placenta still attached to the inside of her womb even after a second abortion done by the hospital to remove fetal remains left by Planned Parenthood. A spokesperson for Northwestern said they had no comment on the case since litigation has been initiated against the hospital. Planned Parenthood released the
following statement: “Our hearts go out to the loved ones of this patient,” wrote Carol Brite, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois. “While legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies. Planned Parenthood of Illinois cares deeply about the health and safety of each and every patient. We do not publicly discuss private patient matters and we follow laws that forbid the disclosure of patient information.” Tonya Reaves was engaged to be married and has a one year-old son. Her twin sister Toni Reaves said her sister was her “other half” and not a day goes by she is not thinking of her. Reaves’ family is hoping that a lawsuit filed by her mother, Dorsey Johns, will get the family the answers they are looking for. The suit, filed last month, is seeking $120,000 in damages.
IHSA rejects CPS request; no sports contests while teachers on strike By J. Coyden Palmer A part of the collateral damage of the teachers strike is how it affects thousands of student athletes who play fall sports. Students who participate in boy’s soccer, cross country, football, girl’s volleyball, golf, and girl’s tennis are having their season disrupted with some vying for college scholarships. Chicago Public Schools officials sent a letter to IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman asking for a wavier on the state rule which prohibits practices and contests from being played while a school district has a work stoppage. Hickman announced on Sept. 10 that the request was denied. “It was the conclusion of the board that granting such a request extended beyond its authority,” Hickman said in a written statement. “The IHSA’s by-laws are developed by and voted into practice by its member school principals and, after some meaningful discussion, the board ultimately felt respecting the guidelines put in place by our member schools was the only option available in this situation, and any change to the by-laws would need to be facilitated through the IHSA legislative process.” Never before in the history of the IHSA had they granted such a waiver request for a school district. Hickman said the sport most affected by the strike is football, because teams must play a minimum of eight games to qualThe Chicago Crusader
ify for the playoffs. Also affected by the strike are IHSA licensed officials and referees. Considered independent contract workers, those who do games for CPS are scrambling to fill now open dates on their calendars. Calvin Davis, sports director for CPS said they have notified the officials that until further notice all sports activities have been suspended. In an email to hundreds of officials, CPS Volleyball Coordinator Cynthia Irvin sent the following message on Monday. “As you know, Chicago Public School teachers are on strike. There will be no volleyball matches until the strike is settled. I do not know if we will resume where we ended and whether or not missed matches will be made up. I will keep you updated,” the message from Irvin read. Davis said it is not known whether or not games that are missed due to the strike will be made-up. He said there are many factors, including how long the strike lasts, available facilities, available officials and IHSA bylaws that will come into play. If the strike is settled within a week, Davis believes there is a good chance all of the postponed contests could be rescheduled. In terms of football teams, practices that have been terminated for a period of at least seven days, but less than 14 days, a school may not resume competition un-
til after three separate days of practice,” reads the IHSA bylaw. However the IHSA did not say teams cannot practice. That it leaves up to local school boards. Davis said it is an option CPS is exploring but he wants to be sure the practices are safe for the athletes because many times players get injured at practice. “We will give consideration in cases where certified coaches are present and all participating student-athletes have parent permission and medical clearance,” Davis said. “Safety is paramount and location is important as well.”
IHSA’S DECISION NOT to allow sports to continue during the Chicago Teachers Union strike means high school football players will have an abbreviated season – at best.

EDITORIAL DO AMERICANS VALUE EDUCATION? All across America, especially in communities of color where students are often lagging behind academically, there are ongoing debates about strategies that will improve education. Chief among these is the traditional act of scapegoating teachers. Others include calling for an elected school board, and it makes no difference to those advocating this strategy, however, that school districts with elected school boards are not faring that much better than their non-elected counterparts. School funding is also thrown around. And whole schools have been “turned around” wherein teachers are fired and replaced. School districts have had musical chairs of general superintendents and heads of school boards; the names have changed but conditions remain the same. So, where is the magic bullet; how can we level the playing field so that all of our students are set on the path to achievement? The latest big city to grapple with this issue is the city of Chicago, the third largest school district in the nation. The teachers went on strike on Monday, September 10, because of an impasse in contract negotiations. Hopefully, this strike will not last long. Among the complaints are the issues of smaller class sizes and a new mandatory evaluation system that will hold teachers accountable for students’ performance. On the surface, this sounds feasible. But think for a moment; what can teachers really do when a great many of the underperforming students come from homes where they have been ill prepared for school? Teachers have to also be social workers because of the extreme challenges that some students face. If a child reaches the 10th grade and reads at a 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade level, it is unfair to hold a current teacher accountable. Surely, there are many different factors at work here. One problem facing the education system is the over reliance on standardized tests. The stakes have been set so high that secondary school teachers often have to sacrifice actual subject matter instruction in order to prepare students for tests in their freshmen, sophomore, and junior years. Elementary school students are also tested. Schools are measured by how well their students perform on these tests. And interestingly, no one seems to be questioning the efficacy of this strategy. It has been shown in many instances that performance on standardized tests does not necessarily predict how well a student can do in life. What the tests measure is how well a student can test, and this does not always translate into the other soft skills that are so important for overall success. Now, a question - what do the following have in common: doctors, lawyers, judges, accountants, engineers, architects, corporate CEOs, sports professionals, movie stars, and astronomers? The answer is that they were all taught at one time in their lives by teachers. How does teacher compensation compare with those professions? In most cases quite poorly. The message that we send to our children, no matter how much lip service we give to the value of education, is that education is not valued. When someone bouncing a ball across a basketball court can make millions, while teachers struggle with far less salary, our kids can see what we value. Follow the money. The problems with our schools are many, including major, historic socioeconomic factors, but we can start with a renewed look at how we value education and those who provide it. Until that is done, we will just keep whistling in the wind while things get worse and worse. A luta continua.
On the Friday before the possible strike by the Chicago Teachers Union members, the head of the school board – David Vitale said he had sat in on the negotiations for the first time. Can you believe that? Ultimately more than 1 million people in and around the city would be affected by a strike and the head of the board floats in for talks just before the date to strike – for the first time at that. But it gets worse, Vitale told one local newspaper he doesn’t think Mayor Rahm Emanuel will have to sit down with negotiators in order to get a deal done. I really must be missing something. Parents have been close to panicking because they were not sure whether their children would be in classes; some teachers had to be wondering how the mortgage and other critical obligations would be paid if there was an extended strike; athletes with a chance at college scholarships surely were thinking about whether a shortened season would impact their chances. What Vitale seems to be saying is all of those concerns and more could have been resolved, or

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CTU-CPS negotiations could have been different ? Dear Editor:
maybe even never come up had he or Emanuel got involved sooner. Why they didn’t doesn’t make sense to me. Sure there is probably a protocol for how negotiations are supposed to start, but when it became clear that there were more problems than solutions between the CPS and CTU, either man should have jumped in and brought the talks to a mutually favorable solution. Emanuel had said early on that if it got near the end of talks he would come to the table and try to bring an agreement. The point is why wait. The mayor has scores of underlings who could have taken on some of the appearances and other work and freed him up to show up at negotiations. He had plenty of time to get in front of talk show hosts and reporters when he was pushing for a longer school day and longer school year. But why was he pretty much MIA when it came to getting a contract deal done? I think he would be considered much more of a hero or savior if he came to the table four or five weeks ago and got things worked out. His one-on-one meetings with CTU President Karen Lewis obviously went nowhere. So if school board officials and Emanuel himself believed his presence would seal the deal he should have been there. Instead of looking like an 11th hour hero, he comes off as just playing a political game with our children as the pieces.
Congratulations to Governor Pat Quinn for taking a bold step Dear Editor: Last week Governor Pat Quinn signed HB 5192 (now P.A. 971129), sponsored by Rep. Michael Zalewski (D-Chicago) and Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields). The legislation was an ini(Continued on page 16)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
The Back End of D.C. Minority “Fronting” By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Sometimes the best intentions can be shattered by unforeseen consequences. Such is the case with the Washington, D.C.’s Department of Small and Local Business Development. One of its missions is to increase the participation of D.C.-based business, particularly small and minorityowned firms. It has become popular for this department to encourage minority/majority joint venture construction contracts. This sounds noble but it often becomes a disaster when all of the parties are not genuine and noble in their motivation. Each joint venture must be screened and certified by the Certified Business Enterprise Office (CBE). To qualify, the minority portion has to have at least 51 percent ownership in the joint venture and also must reside within the District. The outside partner must have less than 50 percent of the joint venture and does not have to reside within the District. The two companies come together under the formal incorporation application to the D.C. government. Bylaws governing the joint venture explain how they are go-
Harry C. Alford ing to work on a particular bid, providing they win that bid. They present their application for CBE Certification. The CBE office reviews all of their papers and makes a decision. Those with CBE certification will get a gift of 12 percent “preference points.” This gives them an advantage over other bidders. They can even bid higher than a noncertified company as long as they land within the 12 percent gift margin. This process is enticing to those white owned firms living outside the District and wishing to get some of those plum D.C. projects. So, they begin breaking the rules.
They contact the Department of Small and Local Business Development to get a recommended list of potential minority contractors. To some of these evil prime contractors, this becomes a “sucker list.” They begin surveying the contractors on the list and may end up with the most naive business person they can find. Together, they work on the joint venture agreement and execute all of the requisite paper work, including signature cards for the joint venture bank account. The minority/local owner will usually declare 51 percent ownership. The out of town majority owner will declare the remaining 49 percent. They get certified and go after a certain bid. If they win, then all hell will break loose. Quickly the white out of town firm will sit its joint venture “partner” down and start dictating how things are going to be on the project. The minority partner’s signature card at the bank has disappeared. Instead, of 51 percent local minority and 49 percent out of town majority, it becomes around 10 percent minority and 90 percent out of town majority. If the minority starts to protest, he or she will be threatened with firing. Firing? Yes, it is like he has suddenly become an employee.
Thus, the promising joint venture has become more like “front and flunky.” The bylaws are mysteriously amended and the whole agreement is breached. Since the bond is in the white company’s name, it has the real power in the “partnership.” The minority firm has very little bonding capacity and could not have done the project on his own. Thus, the front controls the whole project. He will assign most of this work to himself, which makes it very profitable. Plus, he probably overbid the project, collecting even more profit (at the expense of the District). The frustrated minority may be tempted to go to District officials, but that has too many risks. Officials really don’t want to hear about anything that might decrease the listed minority participation. Plus, there is too much dirty business to clean up such as fraud and a cancellation of a much needed project. If the minority firm files a lawsuit, the big, bad majority firm will laugh, kick him all the way off the project and order his lawyers to let the case languish in court for years. Regardless of how you look at it, this is not business development. It is predatory, deceptive and both
misleading and costly to the public. District officials are not powerless when it comes to ending this fraud. Besides checking the bonding information, which is required within the bid, the authorities can easily give an after bid interview with each party separately and verify that this is a real deal. No out of town majority firm should participate at all! Today, there are more than a few very large white owned construction companies living outside of the District who are having a field day running this fronting scheme. I know of one minority firm that has done three different joint venture agreements, worth more than $130 million, with the same predatory firm (one for each of three different bids). He does about $2 million per year and the out of town majority firm averages $500 million. It is just impossible for this to really happen and someone within these District government offices should figure it out or confess to the shams. Better yet, end them now! Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
THE REAL MEANING OF EDUCATION (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill Throughout most of our lives, African people in America have been told if you get a good education you can get a good job. African people in Africa were told something similar. If you get a good education your condition in life will improve. In the early part of the twentieth-century until the late 1960s
and early 1970s, the thrust was to encourage African people in America to at least get a high school diploma so that they could be eligible for a job in a significant segment of the work force. The explosion of the 1960s Civil Rights and Black Power Movements forced colleges and universities to admit Africans in America to their predominately white colleges and universities in large numbers. Today, African people in America are encouraged to get college education so they can get a good job. The education market has been saturated to the extent that a high school diploma of the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, in most instances, has the same meaning as a college degree today. That meaning is one of a college degree, qualifying people for entrylevel jobs in the U. S. labor market, except for those instances where people have been trained in specialized fields at the undergraduate level. What we hear repeatedly today is that we must concentrate on African people in America reading, writing, and math skills at the elementary and secondary levels so they can compete for the jobs that will be available in U. S. multinational corporations in the twentyfirst-century, driven by the world of technology and computers. Many of our ancestors in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth-centuries, who were con-
cerned with the issue of education, asked the question— education for what? It is quite clear that the major direction of U. S. educational policy has been to train and educate African people to work for white people. That is, to teach them to read, write, and compute, so they will be prepared to work for us. In a paper written by our great ancestor Dr. Jacob Carruthers several years ago, entitled, “Black Intellectuals and The Crisis In Black Education,” he observed, “When the chattel slave system was destroyed by the Civil War, one of the first acts of the victors was to provide for Black schooling on a wide scale. The northern industrialists through their philanthropic alter egos began finding and establishing Black colleges. These colleges were intended to sit atop a Negro education system.” Further Dr. Carruthers wrote, “By the turn of the century, even southern whites were making use of this Negro education system to facilitate the transition from the old chattel to a new, but equally effective, system of Black exploitation.” Carruthers explains, “The new system depended upon the cultivation of a Black elite to serve as examples for the masses of Blacks and to demonstrate the rewards of obedience.” The educated Black elite, Carruthers points out, “demonstrated time and time again their ability to do what they had been trained to
do. Eventually, a few of them were invited to manage the segregated colleges that were established to train Black teachers. In this manner, a small, educated Negro elite became overseers of the educational affairs of millions of Black people.” This model of education, that continues today, was established by so-called leading white educators in this country who met at Lake Mohonk, New York (a resort area) on June 4-6, 1890, and June 3-5, 1891 to read and discuss papers on what they officially called the “Negro Question.” Again, Dr. Carruthers writes that at the end of the second conference “they had decided that the primary things that Blacks had to be taught were morality and the dignity of labor (i.e., working for white folks).” African people in the United States have a rich tradition of leaders who have taken issue with the white conceptualization of the mission of education of African people in America. David Walker, Henry Highland Garnet, Henry McNeal Turner, Martin R. Delany, and Edward Wilmot Blyden were nineteenth-century advocates that the education of African people should be designed to assist us in doing for ourselves. In the twentieth-century, leaders such as Marcus Garvey, Carter G. Woodson, Elijah Muhammad, and Malcolm X, all spoke and wrote consistently about the need for
African people to develop an education program aimed at developing African people “to do for self.” In other words, we are still challenged today to create an education climate that inspires African youth in America to understand that the purpose of education is to develop the skills and historical understanding of the past as it relates to the present and future in preparation for working for self and the liberation of African people. This is the challenge of the twenty-first-century— to defeat the one hundred year tradition established by white educational leaders who created curricula for Africans in America designed to prepare them to work for white folks. Our esteemed ancestor, Dr. John Henrik Clarke reminded us repeatedly, that, “history is the clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. It is also a clock that they use to find themselves on the map of human geography. The role of history in the final analysis is to tell a people where they have been and what they have been, where they are and what they are. Most importantly, the role of history is to tell a people where they still must go and what they still must be. To me the relationship of a people to their history is the same as the relationship of a child to its mother.” The purpose of education must always be “for us to do for ourselves!”
AFTER THE EUPHORIA, REALITY SETS IN By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist The 2012 Democratic National Convention was an exuberant celebration of President Obama, his accomplishments, and the many ways his Presidency has made us better off than we were four years ago. Between a stirring and incandescent speech by First Lady Michelle Obama, and an impassioned charge by former President Bill Clinton, the delegates were roused and the pressure was high for President Obama to deliver an inspiring charge to those who have already spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to participate in the convention. Truly, he delivered with a tone that was alternately exuberant, defiant, humorous, and apologetic. Most importantly, he spoke of our country as being at a fork in the road, with choices to be 6
made. Forward with Obama, backward with Romney. He challenged the delegates to move forward and embrace his accomplishments. Spirits were certainly high as thousands of delegates left
ated, the Republicans have hay to make about the employment situation. On the other hand, Democrats can clearly say that President Obama’s policies are holding the line, and that absent cooperation on the American Jobs Act, our President is doing the best that he can do. Is holding the line good enough? African American unemployment rates are 14.1 percent. With the underutilization index Black unemployment rates were nearly 26 percent, which means that one in four African Americans do not have work. Some say this is an underestimate. There are five million people who are part of the long term unemployed, people who were out of work for half a year or more. These folks represent 40 percent of the unemployed. The data can be spun either way. Not enough? Holding the line? Failure? On the road to progress?
the Time Warner Arena chanting, “fired up, ready to go.” Why are political conventions
held, anyway? Some are convinced they could’ve easily collapsed their three or four day schedule to just one or two days, because they are so scripted. Yet one or two days might not be enough to engender the excitement that was present on Thursday night, the chanting, the hugging, the notion that, despite significant challenges, hard work will bring Democrats a victory in November. The convention is a tool to bring delegates, who are local leaders into focused campaign activity. The convention is a tool to get the delegates out to organize and mobilize people. After the euphoria, though, reality sets in. In other words, on Friday morning, the reality of unemployment rates sets in. While the unemployment rate dropped just a bit, from 8.3 to 8.1 percent, the level of job creation does not meet expectations. In other words, with only 96,000 jobs cre-

As much as I was fired up by President Obama’s speech, and the ones that preceded it, I also listened to it through the lens of Leroy: the brother who has been unemployed, or even out of the labor force, for half a year or more. Leroy listened, and Leroy applauded, and maybe Leroy even agreed that we are at a fork in the road. But when Leroy is asked if he is better off than he was four years ago, he is only thinking about his unemployment. He is thinking that he can’t pay his rent. He is thinking that he is worse off, and a great speech won’t make him feel better. The Democratic challenge is to meet Leroy where he lives, to explain to him that his job prospects might be even more re stricted under a Romney-Ryan administration than an Obama one. The challenge is to move Leroy past his angst and indiffer(Continued on page 9) The Chicago Crusader

Churches assist students during teachers’ strike (Continued from page 1) 8:30 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. Monday through Friday, churches stay open 90 minutes longer, which parents said they like. “I am sending my kids to one of the churches because it stays open longer even though there is a school closer I could take them to,” said Shannon Taylor, who lives in the West Pullman community on the South Side. “My kids went to the summer Safe Haven program at this church and loved it.” CPS explained in a news release that 18,000 students attended alternative locations on Monday. The total number of students out of school is more than 300,000. Charter schools, which didn’t exist the last time there was a teachers’ strike, remained open because those teachers are not CTU members. During the strike’s second day, CPS extended the hours at the Safe Haven sites until 2:30 p.m. "I don't know if it is good for kids to be out of school right now considering all the shootings taking place," said Robert Talman, who has a son who attends Crane High School on the West Side. Pocketbook Monologues creator and former WVON talk show host Sharon K. McGhee has died at the age of 54, WVON’s Cliff Kelley confirmed Wednesday. A native of St. Louis, McGhee battled ovarian cancer for more than three years, but she used her illness as a teaching tool going around the country including at Saint Sabina Church where she held a forum to talk about this disease many only whisper about. Born in St. Louis on June 19, 1969, McGhee, who was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2009, called the disease “Cancer in your Pocketbook”—an old fashion term used by many African American mothers to describe their daughter’s vagina. Back then; it was more acceptable to say “pocketbook” rather than the anatomical and correct name of that organ. Black mothers would tell their daughters to “keep your pocketbook closed.” It was part of the birds and bees lessons they taught their daughters about the importance of chastity and maintaining their sexual purity until they were
Sharon K. McGhee married. McGhee, who learned she had stage 4 ovarian caner just three weeks before she had received a phone call offering her a role in the Housewives of Atlanta, took that message across America having created the Pocketbook Monologues which reportedly was the design of Vagina Monologues aimed at teaching Black women and their daughters about the importance of caring for their own sexual health. Out of respect for their former colleague, McGhee, WVON’s talk show host Cliff Kelley paid tribute to her life and legacy. To read the full story please visit www.chicagocrusader.com

as they should." But Marian Robinson, who lives in the Austin community on the West Side, said the strike is about adults and not what's best for children. "My daughter is a senior this year (at North Lawndale Prep) and now she has to sit home and wait for adults to sort things out. She was doing so well too and I know once a person stops doing something, they eventually lose interest," added Robinson. "I just hope teachers and the mayor come to some agreement this week so my baby can get back on track with her studies." The last teachers’ strike in Chicago was in 1987 and it lasted 19 days. Jean-Claude Brizard, chief executive officer for CPS, said the first week went well. “The people of Chicago can be proud of the support that has poured in for our students from every corner of the city,” he said. “We will continue to provide safe and engaging programming for students who do not have alternative options, but this is not a substitute for school and our students belong in class.” Teachers on the picket line see things differently.
Saturday, September 15, 2012
“This is not about just more money but about changing the system. For me personally, the proposed teacher evaluation is what prompted me to vote to strike,” said Carla McCarthy, a 17-year veteran teacher, who teaches seventh grade at Nicholson Elementary School on the South Side. “Some teachers have to do different things to teach their students because of the environment from which those students may have come from. I teach in the Englewood community and a lot of the students living in Englewood are poverty stricken and have other social problems that contributes to their inability to perform well in school.” Karen Lewis, president of the CTU, added that pay is not the key issue with teachers. “We had to negotiate having textbooks for students on the first day. We had to negotiate child psychologists having work space to meet with students and access to a working computer,” Lewis said. “Keep in mind that there are more than 400,000 students attending CPS but only 387 child psychologists. I could go on and on about things we have had to negotiate that quite frankly we should not have had to do.”

Bulls star Derrick Rose gets into pizza business By J. Coyden Palmer Announcing late Wednesday night that he has become an equity owner and national spokesperson for Giordano’s Pizza, Chicago Bulls star point guard Derrick Rose is setting himself up for a career off the court as well. Rose, who signed a $96 million contract extension that kicks in this season, is currently rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered in the first round of the NBA Playoffs this spring. He said he decided to invest in Giordano’s, which is known world-wide for its Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, because he is a fan of the product and the opportunity to create his own pizza was too good of an offer to pass up and it will give him the chance to show his creative skills off the court as well. “I’ve always been a big fan of their stuffed pizzas,” said Rose in a news release. “I’m working right now on my own signature pizza that we plan to introduce very soon. I’m actually pretty good in
the kitchen.” For Giordano’s, which filed for bankruptcy in February of 2011, it will give them an opportunity to rebuild their brand with an Alist celebrity who they say will be a focal part of promoting the brand world-wide. The 38-yearold pizza chain had to close four stores last year as part of an ensuing legal battle. Last year the company had $45 million in annual sales. Giordano LTD fell on hard times when its previous owners suffered big losses in real estate investments. Rose will start appearing in television and print ads for Giordano’s later this month as the Bulls will start pre-season games in October. Rose is the first national celebrity to endorse Giordano’s in an official capacity. Actress Halle Berry is a big fan of the pizza as well and last year during an appearance on the Jay Leno Show mentioned the company along with Garrett’s Popcorn. Victory Park Capital Advisors
bought the Giordano’s brand last year. The company is looking to move the brand to an international market and believe this will play a key role in that process, according to Managing Partner Richard Levy. The pizza business is a cash flow machine; we just have to make it grow and we feel strongly Derrick, like he is on the court, will become the superstar that we need over our rivals,” Levy said. Giordano’s main rival in the Chicago market is Gino’s East. Many heated debates have taken place in households throughout Chicago regarding which is better. But Giordano’s is also competing with Pizzeria Uno and Lou Malnati’s. Rose understands the ferociousness of the pizza battles in Chicago. “I’m proud to call Chicago my hometown and I’ve grown up with my family eating Giordano’s pizza. I’ve always loved Giordano’s, so this was a uniquely personal opportunity for me,” Rose said.

ence to the same enthusiasm that delegates felt on Thursday night. The speeches are over and the work now begins. Speeches won’t bring electoral victory. A solid ground operation, and lots of elbow grease will. After the speech, as people filed out of the Time Warner arena, I spent some time with the Pacifica team from Los Angeles, Margaret Prescod, Davey D, and others. Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Ralph Nader, and I talked about the speech and next steps. Nader is most critical, indicating that President Obama spoke neither of poverty nor increasing the minimum wage. While he is right, one wonders if, at a fork in the road, these are appropriate criticisms. Nader is a critic of the
two-party political system, but that’s all we have now, so we have to work it. When President Obama wins this election, there will be more euphoria, which is a good thing. Then, reality must set in, with advocacy for the poor, as well as the middle class, with revisions to the tax code that eliminate corporate welfare, and with a greater commitment to quality education. From my perspective, too many people enjoy the euphoria and avoid the work. When we choose the Obama fork in the road, we have to be clear that more work must be done.

EDUCATION
Up, up and away! Monday, August 27 marked the beginning of a new and exciting academic year on the Maria High School campus at California Avenue and Marquette Road. Toni Foulkes, alderman of Chicago’s 15th Ward, joined representatives from the Sisters of St. Casimir and leadership team members and the entire student bodies of Maria High School and CatalystMaria Elementary and High Schools at a celebratory ribbon cutting and balloon launch. The ceremony commemorated the opening of the school year and the passing of the torch between two organizations dedicated to improving the lives of the children in the Chicago Lawn community. Maria High School, which celebrated its centennial last year, will close at the end of the 2012-2013 school year due to declining enrollment and rising costs. To ensure that educational choice remains an option for neighborhood children, the Sisters of St. Casimir and the leadership of Maria High School entered into a partnership with the Catalyst Schools, a network of charter schools that emphasizes rigor, college expectations, and excellence. Out of that partnership was born Catalyst-Maria, the third Catalyst campus, and the first one that will eventually encompass grades K-12 in two CPS charter schools that share the same location. Catalyst MariaHigh School and Catalyst-Maria Elementary School are poised to
continue the Maria tradition of preparing students for success in both school and in life. The ceremony took place in the morning as all students, teachers, administrators, and guests, including many Sisters of St. Casimir and family members, met for festivities at the softball field behind the school. In speaking to the crowds, Vice President of Catalyst Schools David Baldwin pledged that Catalyst Maria will live up to the legacy of St. Casimir Academy and Maria High School and will serve the community with the same passion and commitment. He thanked the Sisters of Casimir for their educational vision. Later in the program, Foulkes, along with Sr. Immacula Wendt, General Superior of the Sisters of St. Casimir, and Terry Toth, Chairman of the Catalyst Board, shared ribbon cutting duties and welcomed 380 kindergarten through fifth grade students to their first day of school. One hundred seventy-five Catalyst Maria ninth graders and 95 Maria High School sophomores, juniors, and seniors began school on August 20th. Also speaking were Katie List, principal of Catalyst Maria Elementary School; Dawn Sandoval, principal of Catalyst Maria High School; and Margaret Hayes, principal of Maria High School. Each principal welcomed students and introduced faculty. Hayes also discussed legacy of Mother Maria Kaupas, the foundress of the Sisters of St. Casimir

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
All After School Matters programs, which typically meet three days a week for 75-90 hours over the course of 10-to-16 weeks, are free and open to all Chicago teen residents who are at least 14 years of age, and entering or currently enrolled in high school. Teens can search for programs that interest them at locations in and around their neighborhood, at www.afterschoolmatters.org. Teens must apply online and must meet with program instructors to discuss and present their skills and interests. Teens are encouraged to apply early as program opportunities fill up quickly. Founded in 1991 by former Chicago First Lady Maggie Daley, After School Matters provides teens with opportunities that supplement and enrich the learning that takes place during the traditional school day. “After School Matters allows teens to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond,” said Mary Ellen Caron, chief executive officer
of After School Matters. “By supporting their development of skills in these content areas as well as important career readiness skills, we help them discover their potential and find their path to a meaningful life.” Multiple independent studies and recent data have confirmed that teens who participate in After School Matters apprenticeship programs have fewer course failures, better attendance and higher high school graduation rates. In fact, After School Matters teens who participate for three or more program cycles were found to enroll in college at an 18 percent higher rate and attend nearly 12 more days of high school annually than their CPS peers. For more information about After School Matters and to apply for Fall programs, visit www.afterschoolmatters.org. High School, passed on July 25, 2012 at the age of 101. She would have been 102 on September 24th and had looked forward to voting for President Barack Obama “one more time.” Before Higgins died of pneumonia, she planned her 36th Ora Higgins Youth Foundation Scholarship Awards dinner, Saturday, October 13, 2012 in the Sabre room. Referring to Crosby, Rev. Phillips said, “My mother is a very loving person, very funny and she keeps you laughing. She was a strict parent with us but overall she was an inspiration to the children in the neighborhood. She tried to steer them in the right direction. She set them straight. She did not compromise. She spoke from her heart and a woman of wisdom. She was and still is a very good role model.
“Sometimes she is a little feisty right now,” he admitted laughing. “She goes to a daycare where everyone loves her. She plays the piano and still dances around. She has gained more friends in Memphis than she had in Chicago,” her son said. “There is just something about my mother that sparkles. Her compassion and her love are simply contagious.” Crosby’s daughter, Saundra Smith who lives in the suburbs of Chicago, said her mother is “like a box of chocolates…always something new with each bite of life.” “With pride and a wonderful legacy, she continues to lead her family with love, support and a firm hand which God has entrusted her with,” Smith said. “Our family prayer is that she continues to have good health and the eternal love of God.”

After the Wizard
JERMEL NAKIA AND Orien Richman in a scene from After the Wizard. Everyone is familiar with the film The Wizard of Oz and Dorothy and Toto and her three friends. It is a story from writer L. Frank Baum that has delighted generations of viewers, again and again. It has gone from plain black and white to amazing Technicolor. Well, the new film After the Wizard, which is available at local DVD rental outlets from Breaking Glass Pictures, re-imagines the story and tells the tale in reverse. After the Wizard reveals an Emerald City that isn’t quite the place of dreams and yellow brick roads, and it seems that the city has gone to hell in a hand basket—probably the same basket from the hot air balloon that was used in the original The Wizard of Oz. The place is described as one where everyone tries hard to be selfish throughout the day and at night laments over their shortcomings as far as not having thought of only themselves as much as they could have. The Wizard has absconded with all the riches, leaving the inhabitants to fend for themselves. These circumstances could be a metaphor about what has gone on in contemporary society, where hopes of the American dream have burst, with crime slowly eating away at what’s left of a civil society. Now the story isn’t so idyllic, and After the Wizard is about a young lady and her trip from Kansas to Oz and back. This time the story is told from the perspective of a 12year-old girl named Elizabeth (Jordan Van Vranken) who is stuck in an orphanage in Kingman, Kan
sas, but whose friends, a Black Scarecrow (Jermel Nakia) and the Tin Woodsman (Orien Richman), come looking for her to take her back to a destructive, disenchanted Oz. Elizabeth firmly believes that she is Dorothy and has been deemed delusional by the headmistress (Helen Richman), and plans are being made to have her committed to another restrictive facility. But one day Elizabeth reveals that the Tin Woodsman and the Scarecrow are there—sans the Lion, because he was too afraid to get on the hot air balloon on the way to the train station to their final destination of Kansas. While on the train, the pair run into a blind old man who has answers to all of their questions. Since they are not from modern times and are amazed that the old “philosopher” knows the story of Dorothy, Toto and Oz, they are convinced that their lonesome traveler must be the Wizard.
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
They believe in their hearts, well the Scarecrow at least—since the Tin Woodsman doesn’t have a heart—that Oz is a messy place and if only they can bring Dorothy back with them, then the Emerald City will be better. It is a great, magical movie with a modern day Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow who are so out of place in the world and Kansas where they have no clue as to what’s going on. They are thrown together on a mission to find Dorothy. In the end, however, with a tornado looming, they realize when they do that Dorothy no longer has a place in Oz. She decides that it’s best for her to remain at the orphanage. This is a tough pill to swallow for the trio, because all they know is that they should stick together for better or worse, as they did when Dorothy originally saved them from the evils of Oz. Look for the movie at local movie rental outlets.

The Bookworm Sez ly was positive of it. There’d be fame and fortune in her future, for sure. That is, as long as she could keep away from hustlers, dealers, juvie hall, scammers, creeps, and thieves… When I first picked up “Charly’s Epic Fiascos,” I was surprised at what I was reading. It seemed to be about a lying young hustler who manipulated everyone to get what she wanted. And this was a book for young women? Yes, it is. But... Author Kelli London gives her main character plenty of reason for doing what she does, as well as a bit of regretfulness for having done it. Because of the situation in which London paints Charly’s life and because the character is so charmingly cheeky, readers will fall in love with her. I know I did. But… On the other hand, “Charly’s Epic Fiascos” makes running away seem like a big event. Is that good? I think that depends on to whom you’re giving this book. For 13-to17-year-olds who can see the story as a story, I think it’s a really fun read. But for teens who struggle to recognize fiction, “Charly’s Epic Fiascos” is a NO go.
“No” is a foreign word. It’s something you simply cannot understand. It just doesn’t compute. Not in your vocabulary. When you want something – whether it’s a boy, a job, a grade, a pet, or a new gadget you must have – ain’t nobody better say that word to you because you don’t get it. It. Just. Doesn’t. Make. Sense. And you’re not alone: Charly St. James has never met a “No” she likes, either, but in the new book “Charly’s Epic Fiascos” by Kelli London, ignoring that negative word may take her places she really doesn’t want to go. It was a good thing Mason could-
n’t read minds. He was one fine boy. She wanted him to be her boyfriend, but Charly St. James had been lying to Mason about nearly everything: she was from the South Side of Chicago, not New York. She didn’t just visit her father in Brooklyn; she hadn’t seen him since she was five. And she didn’t have all kinds of money like Mason thought she did. No, Charly worked at a restaurant called Smax’s BBQ and she was hiding her cash so she could buy a phone. That was because Charly’s mom, Brigette (pronounced the French way: Bri-jeet), had been laid off from her job so she laid claim to every cent Charly made and every nice thing Charly owned. To say Brigette was nasty was being nice. But on the afternoon that Brigette stole Charly’s bankroll and lost it at the casino, Charly had enough. She packed her belongings in Brigette’s best luggage and left town on the first ‘Hound she found. New York City was where Charly was headed. Her father lived there – somewhere. Her aunt did, too, and Charly was sure Auntie would help her get an audition for a reality show that would start filming soon. It was practically a done deal, Char-

West Point Baptist plans a full Saturday The corner of 36th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue will be a busy one Saturday, Sept. 15 when West Point Baptist Church, launches its Youth Rally Against Violence and kickoff for the West Point Young People’s New “G” Ministry. The pastor is the Rev. Dr. L. Bernard Jakes. West Point’s young people will introduce the new “G” Ministry. Jakes said the purpose of Saturday’s rally is two-fold with the first being “to generate some excitement among our young people with the church, also it gets them to understand ministry beyond the walls of the church.” He added, “we’re getting them to understand the importance of reaching out. “The motto of the church is living to serve God by serving humanity. The church has to justify its existence in the community, and we can’t justify it by staying within these walls.” Jakes explained this is the first time the church’s young people has organized such an event. He said he believes peers speaking to peers can have a greater impact when it comes to eliminating violence. “It also sends a message to CNN, ABC and others that all of our young people are not partaking in violent acts. We want to stress accountability of young people to young people,” Jakes added. He also said that the church gets
to partner with other ministries across the city and let the world know “our young people must step up and call for an end to violence,” Between 150 and 200 youngsters are expected Saturday. The pastor wants it to be an annual event. The festivities begin at noon. The intent is to restore the village, reclaim the community, rescue peers and respond to the violence. There will be a live performance, a rally as well as an opportunity to sign up for the West Point Youth Leadership team. From 4 p.m.-7 p.m. the church holds its fourth annual gospel

The Governor's action last week will be lauded as a significant improvement by taxpayers and tax practitioners throughout the country. The Illinois Tax Tribunal legislation is based on the highly-recommended American Bar Association Model Tax Court Act, and is an initiative that leading national tax policy experts like the Council on State Taxation (COST) have long advocated as a way to enhance a state's tax ad-

Enough is enough.
OUR STUDENTS DESERVE BETTER.
Public school educators are tired of being bullied and belittled by corporate ideologues and politicians who think that 25% of our children will never amount to anything, so they won’t give them the resources they need. Our fight is about giving our students the neighborhood schools they deserve. Our students need art, music, physical education and world language classes. They deserve smaller class sizes, which research shows helps to improve student academic performance. Our 400,000 students deserve more counselors, nurses and social workers. They deserve schools with libraries, working air-conditioning and heat. There are many other improvements we support that will go a long way toward making our children successful. We are willing to put in the work. All we are asking is for fair compensation, job security and a better school day for our students. Support our neighborhood students, educators and schools.
