OVER! The “Dyett 15” fight for self-determination vs. mayoral edicts continues By Chinta Strausberg On a hunger strike for 30 days, 15 determined community activists have vowed to do whatever it takes to turn Walter H. Dyett High School into a green technology school. They accuse the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) of allegedly deliberately destabilizing, disinvesting and disenfranchising AfricanAmerican and Latino schools, especially Dyett. The battle for self-determination vs. mayoral edicts continues. Representing the Coalition to Revitalize Dyett, Jitu Brown, national director for the Journey for Justice Alliance, and community

representative Cathy Dale—both hunger strikers—won’t apologize for rushing the stage during Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s recently- held budget hearing that caused his security to rush him out of the building. While some felt they were disrespectful, Brown said, “Nobody is criticizing the sabotaging of Dyett High School or the thousands of voices of Bronzeville who were ignored.” They are tired of the mayor ignoring their demands and have pushed the envelope to get his attention, including chaining themselves outside of his fifth floor City Hall office. Familiar with the handwriting on the wall—that is, school closings in Black and brown communities, turnarounds, replacements with privately-run charter schools with selective admissions and phase-out programs—the “Dyett 15” have good reasons for fighting back, and they have the commu-

nity’s support. Brown said these so-called reform programs result in the firing of seasoned, mostly Black teachers and staff, who are then replaced with young, white teachers who are paid less, and lack educational experience. He said these school schemes disrupt, destabilize and disenfranchise students and the community and that the disinvestment in Dyett is crystal clear. In 2011, they have watched CPS cut, close and transform feeder schools and Dyett. One example: Cutting the Advancement via Individual Determination program at Dyett that prepared students for college and the workplace. CPS cut the school’s Advance Placement (AP) classes, as well as eliminating the LOVE/Young Men of Dyett programs which mentored both male and female students. (Continued on page 3)

New Trauma Center draws mixed reactions By J. Coyden Palmer Last week, the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) and Sinai Health Center hospitals announced a collaborative effort to build a Level I trauma center on the South Side. The $40 million project will be built on the existing Holy Cross Hospital site at 68th and California and will address a desperate need for a trauma center in city’s underserved neighborhoods. But there is still criticism coming with the plan. Its location on the Southwest Side is still a far distance from where many people say it is needed most and it is in relative close proximity to another Level I trauma center, Advocate Christ in Oak Lawn. State Senator Mattie Hunter (Democrat3rd) said there is a reason to be optimistic with last week’s announcement. But she also believes the trauma center on the South Side will not solve all of the problems or provide enough resources for what is needed. “After years of protests, the voices of the community are finally being heard,” wrote Hunter to her constituents via email. “This critical win is only the first step in a twoprong solution to violence-related deaths in Chicago. First, a new facility needs to be built on the city’s East Side. Without it, thousands of residents will still have long commutes to a hospital equipped to treat trauma patients. “Second, but most importantly, we need to address the root of the problem. Our efforts need to focus on making our streets safer, providing opportunities for young people and reducing violence in our troubled communities,” Hunter said. A local grass roots organization, Fearless Leaders by the Youth (FLY), has been protesting and publicly criticizing the University of Chicago for not having a Level I trauma center since 2010 when FLY cofounder Damien Turner was shot three blocks from the University of Chicago’s Medical Center but was transported downtown to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the closest trauma center. Turner died en route to the hospital. The group claimed victory in the battle, but say the war itself rages on. “We want to thank everyone who supported us, fought with us, bled with us, and (Continued on page 2)

Mother of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson remembered By Chinta Strausberg Chicago pastors came out strong Saturday at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters for the Celebration of Life service for Helen Burns Jackson, the mother of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., who died September 9, at the age of 92 after a lengthy illness. Her grandson, Jonathan Jackson, couldn’t hold back his tears as he reflected on his grandmother while others thanked her for bearing “good fruit” in giving birth to Reverend Jackson. Introduced by Salem Baptist Church’s Pastor James Meeks, Saint Sabina’s Father Michael L. Pfleger made powerful and passionate remarks about Burns Jackson. Rushing from the 79th Street Renaissance festival, Pfleger said he had to come by and “lift up” the Jackson family. “I come to celebrate the life of his mother, Helen Burns Jackson, her works, her worth and her witness,” said Pfleger. “I come to thank Ms. Jackson for giving life to Jesse Louis Jackson but not just giving him life but creating an atmosphere where like Mary and Joseph where her son can grow up and age with grace and wisdom, an atmosphere that provided him with a conscious for justice, a conviction for righteousness and the courage to make the playing field equal in America… the fight is still going on.” Quoting the bible, Pfleger said, “The word says we shall be known by the fruit that we bear. Well Ms. Jackson, you bore rich fruit. We all eat from that fruit. We’re all being nourished and blessed by that fruit. That fruit has helped change the landscape of America.”

Pfleger said to Reverend Jackson, who was in South Carolina, “We support and love you, but we never needed your prophetic voice and your historical perspective than we need right now in America. Things are not getting better. They are getting worse. “Poverty, unemployment and homelessness and homicides are up, shootings are up, education is falling apart and guns are part of our wardrobe. Reverend Jackson, we need your voice,” bellowed Pfleger. “So, we strengthen you. We comfort you. We wrap our arms around you and while we grieve the loss of your mother, we celebrate her legacy.” In a video-taped message from Congressman Bobby Rush, Burns Jackson was heralded as a hero and a “great woman of distinction.” The video was filmed while Rush was on the House floor introducing a resolution in honor of Jackson’s mother. He called her “the epitome’’of a good fruit-bearing tree” and thanked her for raising “two great sons,” Reverend Jackson and his brother, song writer Charles Jackson. Referring to the bible, Pastor Meeks referred to Hannah, the mother of Samuel he said means “acts of God.” Meeks said mothers have to pray for their children. “That is what Mother Helen did. She prayed for her son.” Meeks referring to Mary, the mother of Jesus, a man she “had enough sense to know that there was something inside of her son.” Speaking to mothers across the nation, Meeks said, “Don’t be afraid to hide your children. Don’t let them be exposed to everything…. You got to hide your kids from stuff like Mother Helen had to hide Reverend from a whole lot of racism

Jackson. until he couldn’t take it no more.” With tears streaming down his face, Jonathan Jackson said, “She didn’t have thousand of books at her house, but she had one book. She had the bible. It was tattered up. Every page had been turned, and as she met her transition from hospital from home to assisted living to hospital and you carry fewer of your remaining objects with you. She kept her bible with her.” Jackson thanked a number of people including former President Bill Clinton for confirming he

would attend Burns Jackson’s funeral Monday. He thanked his grandmother for giving birth to his uncle Chuck (Charles) Jackson, a wellknown songwriter. “Thank you for being a teenage mother. We thank God for the journey.” Reverend Janette Wilson said “We have lost a great woman who bore some great fruit. If she had given us the gift of Reverend Jackson, African Americans and other people would not have accomplished so many obstacles we have in this country. She gave America a great

gift in Reverend Jackson.” Quoting Bonita Parker, a PUSH official, Acree said, “Great things come in small packages.” Burns Jackson’s funeral was held on Monday at Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. She was laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in the same city. The Jackson Foundation has set up a musical scholarship fund in the name of Helen Burns Jackson. Those donations should be sent to 6845 South Constance Avenue, Chicago, IL 60649.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel in his official statement praised the medical institutions for working together but failed to recognize the

youth, who many credit with keeping the issue in the public’s conscience for years and forcing the UCM into an uncomfortable public position. FLY members have been arrested for blocking the emergency room at the UCM and were constant protestors throughout the Obama Presidential Library search process. The group even asked President Obama to not pick the University of Chicago site for his library until the need for a trauma

center on the South Side was addressed. Jamal Julien, a South Side native who founded Slo Roll Chicago, a community bicycling organization, is also a political analyst. He said what the UCM did was heavily compromise and do as little as possible to address the real need. He said the university is not putting a “full effort” into the project and should be taken to task for it. “If you should find me dying of apparent trauma from an auto accident, slip and fall/burst my head, shot, stabbed and/or otherwise mortally wounded, please lay my remains on the doorstep of the University of Chicago’s Sharon O’Keefe, President of the Medical Center,” Julien said. “Tell her I dropped by to inform her of my disgust with the elitist institution and its disdain for Black and Latino life; its desire to swap services for those up to 18 years old in Woodlawn for a Trauma center that is five plus miles away. It’s a bait and switch

after the Obama Library decision.” Earlier this year the UCM announced it would increase the age to 18 for treating trauma patients in its children’s trauma center. FLY and other organizations said that was a good start, but activists still believe UCM has the resources to have an adult trauma center at their 57th Street and Ellis location. Julien said the UCM also sits in the middle of the South Side, which would make it a better logistical choice than Holy Cross. Other residents agree. “If the paramedics have to take me all the way to Holy Cross, then they might as well take me to Christ,” said South Side resident Allan Harris who lives in the 8000 block of Morgan in Auburn/Gresham, which has one of the highest violent crime rates in the city. “We’re talking about basically the same distance from my house. I think people would like to see Roseland, Trinity or Provident made into a trauma center or perhaps all of them. This thing at Holy Cross doesn’t really ad-

dress the high-demand for trauma care in this area.” Teyonta Rivers of Englewood said she is grateful Holy Cross will be a trauma center. She said for people in her community, which also has a high violent crime rate, it will allow them to get the care they need faster and allow for relatives to visit sick and injured in the hospital easier. “I’ve lost three friends to gun violence in this community and I’m only 23,” Rivers said. “Two of them died in the ambulance going to the hospital and one died right here on the street. Keeping it real Englewood is violent and there are a lot of innocent people who need this. It can’t open soon enough if you ask me.” The partnership anticipates filing a Certificate of Need application with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, and will also seek approval with the Illinois Department of Public Health. The approval processes and construction are expected to take at least two years. www.chicagocrusader.com

Sandra Bland case could get grand jury next month Chicago Crusader staff report Sandra Bland’s criminal case could get a grand jury in October to determine whether charges will be filed against Texas state and county officials. They have been blamed for the death of the Naperville woman after she was found dead in a Texas jail cell in July. The news came on Tuesday, September 15 in a federal courtroom where reportedly a handful of Bland’s supporters turned out for a hearing on the case. Assistant Attorney General Seth Byron Dennis told a federal judge that the results of a state investigation would soon be turned over to the Waller County district attorney. The findings will then be submitted to a grand jury in mid to late October. Bland died July 13, three days after State Trooper Brian Encinia arrested her following a dramatic confrontation that began when

she was pulled over for making an improper lane change in Prairie View, Texas. A jail official found Bland hanging from a partition in her cell with a garbage bag tied around her neck. Bland’s death sparked protests and outrage in Chicago and in Black communities across the nation. A medical examiner ruled that Bland’s death was a suicide, but her family disagrees. Last month, Bland’s mother, Geneva ReedVeal, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Encinia and jail officials, accusing them of “acting recklessly” when they arrested and jailed her daughter. But a Waller County attorney on Tuesday disagreed, saying Bland was treated well while she was incarcerated. The attorney also said a state jail inspector had advised the facility to place garbage bags and large containers inside of its jail cells. In seeking a trial date for

Bland’s case, Reed-Veal’s lawyers told a federal judge that their efforts have been hampered by a lack of information about the investigation. But Dennis told the judge the investigation will be completed in the next several days. U.S. District Judge David Hittner urged both sides to consider mediation or settling the case out of court. But Hittner said if a trial is needed, he wanted to get the proceedings moving along. There are concerns that Bland’s lawsuit lacks specific civil rights violations that were raised against Encinia. Hittner gave Bland’s lawyers until November 2 to respond to Dennis’ argument. Another hearing was set for December 17. Bland was arrested at a time when police killings across the nation galvanized civil rights organizations and youth movements seeking change and justice in the legal system.

The “Dyett 15” fight for self-determination vs. mayoral edicts (Continued from page 1) Trouble and the obvious disinvestment in Dyett began in 1999 when CPS converted the school from middle to high school, but failed to provide any school resources. The Coalition said on the school’s opening day, Dyett had seven books in its library and “unequipped science labs; yet, the school was expected to meet district performance standards.” Strangely, in that same year, CPS invested $24 million to convert King College Prep into a selective enrollment magnet school. “Dyett has 25.6 percent special needs students, but has not received adequate resources to serve them.” Painting a clearer picture of the disinvestment in Dyett, Brown said back in 2008, Dyett had the largest number of students going to college. “We had a nationally recognized Restorative Justice and Education to Success program that helped to double graduation rates and raise college attendance by 41 percent. CPS refused to fund this program and also cut Dyett’s Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) college preparatory program.” CPS also cut Dyett’s truancy prevention program the Coalition says provided mentoring, including a Saturday school that had an effective reading program. CPS also cut a counselor and an assistant principal. The Coalition says CPS has closed, turned around or converted to charter schools or selective enrollment 20 schools near Dyett, and between 2005 and 2010, four high schools near Dyett were closed. www.chicagocrusader.com

Pointing a finger at CPS, Brown said this further destabilized a community already under attack with the razing of public housing coupled with gentrification. Brown and Dale said they are tired of the student shuffle that sometimes places children miles away from home, in harm’s way and into the crossfires of possible gang turf wars. Key to the Coalition’s demands for a green technology curriculum is an urban garden that was developed through a partnership between Dyett and the Chicago Botanic Garden. The coalition watched how CPS peeled away supportive programs that were increasing the graduation rates and improving school attendance. “In 2011, we won the ESPN ‘Rise Up’ award. We beat out 400 other schools around the country and won a $4 million renovation to our athletic facilities. The next year, they voted to phase the school out,” Brown said. “The gym has been renovated, but the students never got to use it.” The students have to take gym online. “How do you take gym online?” questioned Dale. The Board of Education voted to phase out Dyett—located in Washington Park—in 2012 citing poor performance and decided to send the students to Phillips High School although Philips is reportedly doing no better than Dyett according to district performance measures. The “Dyett 15” is interested in the students and providing them with the best education—one that will prepare them for college and for a global career, not in the arts as the mayor has so deemed.

“We were forced into this route,” Dale said referring to their hunger strike. “We’ve been working on Dyett for five years or more. We’ve done everything humanly possible to support our children and get the support they need, but the board has consistently ignored us and taken services away from our schools.” Dale said when Mayor Emanuel closed 50 schools, they said, “enough is enough.” To get what they want for their students, Brown said, “We had to starve ourselves, but just last week, the mayor and CPS/CEO Forrest Claypool held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Lincoln Park High School to announce a $21 million annex which the parents did not want.” Brown and Dale said this is a fight for self-determination, and they have remained united in their requests versus the mayor’s desire to have Dyett as an arts school with a technology hub—something Brown and Dale said “thousands of Bronzeville residents do not want.” “We did everything above and beyond what parents are supposed to do, but because there was no vision for our children from CPS, we created one,” said Brown. Brown went on to say, “Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology High School is not just about one school. We gave the district a K-12 system of education in Bronzeville with Dyett and seven feeder schools connected to the program with vertical curriculum alignment.” Additionally, Brown said students would have a curriculum that prepared them for a global leadership in

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

green technology course of study. “We have letters of support from seven local school councils saying they wanted to be a part of this. We had education experts from all over the country, including the American Educational Research Association (AERA) headed by Jeannie Oakes.” Brown shared that Oakes told him that their proposal was one of the best proposals for a school she had ever seen, and Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said it was the best proposal she had ever seen as well. Parents attended the Board of Education “sham” meetings as Brown described them. He said they were given two minutes to speak, but the Coalition believes “the decisions were made behind closed doors.” Brown said they were particularly upset with some African-American ministers who were aligned with the mayor and who allegedly paid protesters $25 each to oppose the Dyett parents. “They then cashed in on the School Safe Passage Way contracts.” He said these ministers “had nothing to do with saving Dyett” and he resents their engaging in politics just to “feed at the trough of the mayor at the expense of the children.” Dale added, “All of these people have consistently sold out our community. They supported the closing of our schools, and we are the ones who did the work.” With community consensus, the “Dyett 15” said there was an overwhelming demand for a Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology High School. “We are will-

ing to negotiate with CPS, but we will not be excluded from a school we have fought for, suffered for and struggled to save,” the “Dyett 15” said in a statement. Dale said their plan will provide “sustainable jobs.” Rather, they are committed to these demands: • A school with a global leadership curriculum. • A school with green technology in the name with green technology curriculum. • A school with vertical curricular alignment with the 6 feeder schools identified in the proposal. • Dyett as a community school (open until 7pm daily, with programs and resources for parents, students and the community). • Dwayne Turner, a long-time CPS educator who lives in Bronzeville and former principal who respects community input, to serve as the principal of Dyett. • The school must retain the name Walter H. Dyett, who was a violinist and CPS music educator, and • The Coalition to Revitalize Dyett must be fully represented with no fewer than six people on the design/planning team of the school. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) issued a statement in favor of the then “Dyett 12” (now 15), saying, “We are in full solidarity with the activists’ decision to remain on a hunger strike. This community does not deserve watered-down compromise deals among the mayor’s political allies that CPS crafted in backrooms and without the participation of the very people who have successfully fought to re-open Dyett High School.”

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL THE IMPORTANCE OF MEMORY IN THE “VACUUM OF THE NOW” Several years ago some high school students were listening to a speaker in an assembly. The speaker was addressing the issues of civil rights and the fight that Black people have waged down through the years. The speaker began to address the topic of the contributions that the late, great orator and civil rights icon, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., made to the struggle for liberation. At one point, one of the students raised his hand and asked if that happened back during the slavery days! And no, he was not joking; he had no sense of history; to him, Dr. King was as remote as Frederick Douglass. Today, a lot of young men and women think of the struggles that Blacks have had to endure as something in the remote past. Because of the immediacy of their lives and the issues they face, they have no knowledge of the impact that those who came before had on their lives today. They don’t realize that a mere 60 years ago Black people could not live in certain neighborhoods, or that there were separate water fountains in the South for Black people and white people. Many of them have landed on a level where their only immediate concern is that of getting the “paper,” the money, and sometimes this is done by any means necessary. The notion of working for the good of the whole community is foreign and, actually, irrelevant to many of them. They live in a vacuum of the now; their lives are a snapshot of the near past, present, and the near future. This shortness of memory does not just afflict Black youth. White people, especially those of a certain ilk, demonstrate the same lack of awareness of how the past has influenced the present. They are not able to connect the dots between the past when their ancestors visited a savage oppression on Black people and the conditions of today’s Black communities. They forget that their ancestors snatched people from their homes in Africa and unapologetically exploited and murdered them for gain. They often demonstrate an extreme case of cultural myopia...their memories are no longer than the latest sound byte. It is sometimes a very daunting task to convince young white people (and some not so young), that they have done terrible things to Blacks and to indigenous Americans. They naively talk about banning immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere in a quest to protect “THEIR” country, forgetting all the while that their ancestors, Europeans, were the interlopers; they were the ones who came to this land, took it from those who lived here, put them on reservations, and then went abroad to take people from the African continent to bring them here to make them work for free until they died. This is why America is what it is today; a very rich nation – they benefitted from free labor. White bigots have forgotten this; their memories are short! They can’t see that the actions of their ancestors, and by extension, themselves, have helped to create an unjust society. “I didn’t own any slaves” they have been heard to say, which means that they think today’s unbalanced society sprang from a vacuum. So herein lies a conundrum; on the one hand we have Blacks who don’t remember the history of their oppression, and on the other, whites who refuse to take any of the blame for the conditions that exist today. And all of this is a result of short memories. This is why the study of HISTORY is so important; it is a way to artificially extend a society’s memory so that current situations can be seen in a greater context, which can lead to wisdom. (Of course, it is important that we consider “accurate” history, however, and not the propaganda that myopic oppressors perpetuate). If we eschew the study of our own history, we can end up repeating the mistakes of the past. We must remember that we forget, so that we will not forget to remember! A luta continua.

Ken Dunkin, the state rep has no reason to know me, like thousands of others I am a resident of the Fifth District, and before it was re-mapped I voted blindly Democratic. That means I was one of many who helped get Dunkin in office. Since his latest scheme against the Democratic party in Springfield, he can bet I will be working hard for his next opponent. I want to make sure Dunkin the Traitor is removed from office. Sure, he has every right to side with a Republican governor if he chooses. At the same time, if he is going to do so, it shouldn’t be underhanded and sneaky like Dunkin has been. He owes everyone in the Fifth District better. The vast majority of the district did not vote for Gov. Bruce Rauner, so there is no reason to believe those people are/were gung-ho about anything that the Republican proposed. He made it clear during his campaign that he liked how Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker had decimated labor unions in that state, and he wants to do the same in Illinois. Why in the world would Dunkin side with him and skip a critical vote that gets Rauner on track to do that? Dunkin did so because he is a traitor-to the Democratic party, to

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It is simple: Dunkin is a traitor Dear Editor:

his colleagues and to his constituents, except maybe those who live in the Gold Coast part of his district. But for the rest of us, the Woodlawn, the Grand Crossing and Washington Park crowd, many if not most of us want unions to have the ability to strike. Were it not for the unions and the influence they held many of our families would have never gotten middle class wages. He has been in office long enough to know and understand political and governmental protocol. He also is old enough to know what underhanded is.That is exactly what he was doing, being underhanded, by having secret meetings and conversations with Rauner. Is that what got the other Black elected officials in Springfield to end his tenure as chairman of their caucus? If he was an honorable person, with ANY integrity he would have 1) informed his colleagues of his meetings with Rauner before they happened, 2) been man enough to tell Mike Madigan he was not going to be on his side and show up and vote no. Dunkin chose to play the weasel role and be out of town when the vote came up. This is not about Madigan’s control but the future of tens of thousands in the state. Dunkin believes he is really smart but his failure to show and vote shows how really far from reality he is removed. Gerald Morris

COMMENTARY

Going from a Great Nation to a Land of Poverty Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Our stock market has been correcting itself for quite some time. It appears that the major correction is on its way and the world’s economy is going to take a “nose dive.” America, being the wealthiest nation, has the most to lose. The Great Recession started in 2008 and the recovery is very anemic (if it is a recovery at all). We tried to address it with the Stimulus Project but that was a total failure. We were $17 trillion in debt and we threw another $1 trillion up against “the wall.” Thus, our debt today is over $18 trillion and few on Capitol Hill and the White House seem to care about that. That neglect will cost this nation more and more jobs. The amount of Americans living in poverty is at record levels and there is no end in sight. What is the main reason for Black unemployment? Let’s start with the U.S. Department of Labor. It is in charge of the enforcement of Executive Order 11246 (Affirmative Action). Over the last few decades this agency has neglected its duty. Particularly with the construction industry. There

Harry C. Alford are trade unions in construction that totally ignore Executive Order 11246. Consequently, we have construction unions that discriminate against Blacks (Hispanics and women also) without any reprisals or penalties from the U.S. Department of Labor. The agency knows this and does nothing about it. Our civil rights group see it but do nothing but take union sponsorship money. Our elected officials, including Black ones, are afraid of the union muscle and sell out our po-

tential workers. We need jobs!! But they let this persist. It is very much publicized about “Silicon Valley” discriminating against Blacks in the high tech industry. Where is the publicity about “shovel ready” construction jobs that most people can perform? It gets worse. The current administration is trying to boost the minimum wage to $15 per hour. Doing that will multiply the amount of unemployment in our communities. Welfare will rise even farther than the record levels we have now because small businesses will not be able to hire as many people when the minimum wage is beyond their reach. The Department of Labor has another stupid idea. They want to shut down small firms and individuals that provide investment advice to small businesses and individuals. In essence, they want to put an end to retirement programs for low income individuals and small businesses. No retirement, instead poverty for the duration of your later years in life. It is cruel! Education is a key reason for people rising above poverty and despair. Forget about that, if the Gainful Employment Rule is implemented by the U.S. Depart-

ment of Education. That rule will reduce college education opportunities for at least 40% of the Black students in America. Also, the reduction in funding of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) is going to have a very negative impact on educational opportunities for our children. Why are they doing this? The most proven way to wealth building is home ownership. The big catalyst for that is banks and mortgage houses. The two biggest reasons for the existence of home ownership has been the activity of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. These institutions would guarantee the funding of homes for individuals and families. But now, the Administration is trying to dissolve Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. How will Americans be able to finance home ownership and build wealth? They won’t! Belief that America is strong is good for our economy. So why are they shrinking our military to pitiful levels. Our navy has never been smaller since before World War II. Our marching troops are at the lowest population in 75 years. As Russia and China are building their military to gigantic proportions we seem to be surrendering

our strength at the expense of our liberty. We couldn’t deal with Syria so ISIS has seized a major portion of the Middle East. We ran out of Iraq like we were scared of “bad boys” and it is costing us peace. We are flirting with Iran who has supplied weapons to our enemies in order to kill our troops. We look like punks! No nation is giving us respect. My brothers and sisters, we are going down like a lead balloon. We need to restore our pride. We must invest in our infrastructure and create business opportunities which will result in jobs by the millions. In my 68 years of life, I have never witnessed my beloved America in such a weak and confused state. Let’s end this poverty and embrace pure capitalism. Our time is getting short and we better turn things around. We owe it to the next generations of America. The generation before us is known as “The Greatest Generation.” How will history refer to us – “The Worst Generation”? Help us Lord. Obama is no ‘Lame Duck’ President By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Almost as surprising as Barack Obama’s election as the nation’s first African American president is his success in not becoming a lame duck president, a term normally applied to a politically weakened outgoing president’s last two years in office. Few presidents have been as lame as George W. Bush, who was largely dismissed in his last two years in office and so unpopular that Republicans did not want him to show up at the last Republican national convention of his tenure for fear of harming the GOP’s chances of winning the White House in 2008. Bush, acting as though he was in the federal witness protection program, didn’t appear, but that did not alter the outcome of the election. Given the GOP’s extreme hostility toward Obama – with the open declaration by now-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell [R-Kentucky] that his sole objective was to make Obama a one-term president – many expected Obama to be impotent as he limps out of office next year. But they were in for a surprise as Obama transformed his campaign motto of “Yes, we can” to “Yes, we did.” In the last year alone, Obama commuted the sentences of 46 prisoners incarcerated for nonviolent www.chicagocrusader.coM

George E. Curry crimes, most of them drug related. He restored diplomatic relations with Cuba after a 50-year standoff, with each country reopening its embassy. President Obama issued an executive order allowing the parents of children born in the U.S. to remain in this country. He extended abortion coverage to Peace Corps volunteers who became pregnant as a result of rape, incest or life endangerment. And his administration raised the qualification for receiving overtime pay from $23,660 to $50,440. Obama scored a major victory when, in the face of heated Republican opposition, he joined five other world leaders in curbing Iran’s nuclear program. tives was not unexpected. But Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman explains, “There’s a different story on the left, where you now find a significant number of critics decrying Obama as, to quote Cornel West, someone who ‘posed as a progressive and turned out to be counterfeit.’ They’re outraged that Wall Street hasn’t been punished, that income inequality remains so high, that ‘neoliberal’ economic policies are still in place.” But given Republican opposition to less ambitious goals presented by Obama, Krugman argues that Obama would have no success trying to advance such progressive ideals. Krugman wrote recently in Rolling Stone magazine: “Despite bitter opposition, despite having come close to self-inflicted disaster, Obama has emerged as one of the most consequential and, yes, successful presidents in American history. “His health reform is imperfect but still a huge step forward – and it’s working better than anyone expected. Financial reform fell far short of what should have happened, but it’s much more effective than you’d think. Economic management has been half-crippled by Republican obstruction, but has nonetheless been much better than in other advanced countries. And environmental policy is starting to look like it could be a major legacy.” In a speech last October at Northwestern University, President Obama

said he is proud of his accomplishments. He said, “When I took office, businesses were laying off 800,000 Americans a month. Today, our businesses are hiring 200,000 Americans a month. The unemployment rate has come down from a high of 10 percent in 2009, to 6.1 percent today. Over the past four and a half years, our businesses have created 10 million new jobs; this is the longest uninterrupted stretch of private sector job creation in our history. “Think about that…Right now, there are more job openings than at any time since 2001. All told, the United States has put more people back to work than Europe, Japan, and every other advanced economy combined.” From January 2009 to April, Black unemployment had declined from 12.7 percent to 9.6 percent, a decrease of 3.1 percent. Not ideal, but not lame. George E. Curry, former editorin-chief of Emerge magazine, is editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA) and BlackPressUSA.com. COMMENTARY

REMEMBERING THE 1996-97 NBUF GENOCIDE CAMPAIGN Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. Dr. Conrad Worrill

August 18 - 20, 1996, the San Jose Mercury News published a three part series entitled, “Dark Alliance” written by Gary Webb. Webb explained in this series that “Throughout its 49 year history, the CIA has defended having to deal with unsavory characters in the hope of furthering U.S. interest.” Webb further wrote— “This usually has involved dictators and thugs who brutalized people in their own countries, which was bad enough. But now it appears that the CIA has done business with— and protected criminals whose victims were not in foreign lands but in the inner cities of the United States of America.” For almost a decade, Webb reveals that “beginning in the early 1980s, a drug ring based in the Bay Area sold thousands of pounds of cut-rate cocaine to Los Angeles street gangs and then used the lucre to buy arms for the Contras, the so-called freedom fighters that Lt. Col. Oliver North all but canonized during the Reagan administration.” This Contra–run drug network according to Webb, “opened the first contact between Colombia’s notorious cocaine cartels and L.A.’s Black neighborhoods. The flood of the insidious white power helped to make crack affordable in poor communities where its use eventually be-

came epidemic.” Although this series addressed the evolution of crack cocaine in the inner cities of America, for the most part the white mainstream media did not pick the story up. It was not until the September 3, 1996 issue of the Final Call that featured a front page story on “The CIA Drug Pipeline” did the African community in America, in a mass way, begin to discuss this issue and organize around it. In response to these revelations of the CIA involvement in cocaine distribution to the Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles, in which profits were used to finance the CIA backed contra army in Nicaragua, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and a host of African leaders in America demanded the CIA be investigated. Dick Gregory led protests at the CIA headquarters in Virginia. The response by the CIA, through its Director, John Deutch was to attempt to cover up and deny any knowledge of CIA involvement in this affair. The Justice Department, through Attorney General Janet Reno, took the same position. After careful consideration of the historical trends and developments surrounding the devastating impact of the importation of drugs in the

African Communities of America, the National Black United Front (NBUF) determined it was important to identify what the real issue was. We identified the real issue to be genocide on African people in this country by the policies and practices of the United States Government. On Friday, October 25, 1996, the National Black United Front, of which I was, at that time, the National Chairman, held a press conference in Chicago to announce our campaign to submit petitions to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and New York City in May of 1997, charging the United States Government with genocide. This campaign took off immediately as we developed a petition and began circulating it through NBUF chapters across the country and other Black movement forces. The campaign was modeled after the 1951 efforts of William L. Patterson, who was National Executive Secretary of the Civil Rights Congress, Paul Robeson, Dr. W.E.B. DuBois and a host of others who organized a genocide petition campaign that “was first presented to the world in 1951. Addressed to the United Nations it was submitted to that body in Paris, France at Palais

Chaillott where the Fifth Session of the General Assembly had gathered.” Further, in the important book, “We Charge Genocide,” edited by William L. Patterson and first published in 1951, explained “Simultaneously a delegation led by Paul Robeson presented copies to the office of the Secretary General of the UN in New York.” I am proud and honored that more than 157,000 people from throughout the United States signed the Petition/Declaration on behalf of NBUF and the suffering masses of African people in the United States and throughout the diaspora. The Petition/Declaration was officially submitted on May 21, 1997 to Mr. Ralph Zacklin, Officer in Charge of High Commission of Human Rights, Centre for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland. Also, this same Petition/Declaration was submitted to the High Commission of Human Rights in New York on May 27, 1997. There are so many people to thank who made the first phase of this campaign successful. First, I want to thank all the ancestors who paved the way for us to seek release for our condition at the international level. Marcus Garvey, (Continued on page 7)

Drama and Deadlines – By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Congress must approve a budget by October 1, or our government will shut down. That means that people will not be paid and technically, government departments will cease to operate. Social Security payments, veterans’ benefits, and more will cease to be paid. Literally, government will shut down. Whenever we get to this brinkmanship, Congress approves a continuing resolution, which provides temporary funding at current levels, or enforces an across the board reduction of a certain percent. Sometimes the cuts are established so that the military takes smaller cuts than other departments. The bottom line is that lawmakers figure out how to apply a Band-Aid to a hemorrhaging leg. The bad news is that the problem does not go away. The good news is that it keeps us going for a few minutes. Why are House Republicans so determined to have a budget showdown? Part of it is their determination to end federal fund6

ing for Planned Parenthood. They refuse to understand that, in addition to providing abortion service, Planned Parenthood provides basic women’s health services, including gynecological examinations. They are providing these health services in areas where they are not available. Abortions represent just a fraction of what they offer. But, based on a set of bogus videos, some Republicans are using those videos to posture about abortion. Somebody needs to speak up for Planned Parenthood, but unless they do, this is going to be a rook on the shutdown chessboard. Then there is the issue, always, about budget cuts and the difference between domestic spending and military spending. In order to accept the Obama budget, Congress will have to lift the debt ceiling. They don’t want to. The Republican rap is we need more fiscal discipline. Many of these folks will take to the floor of Congress or of the Senate to rail about irresponsible spending. Their drama impedes the October 1 deadline, and they know it. This is an opportunity for many

SATURDAY, September 19, 2015

Dr. Julianne Malveaux Republicans who are Presidential candidates (Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, and Ben Carson to name a few) to show their stuff. They want to stand out from their opponents, as well as from this administration. They hope like hell that C-SPAN or some other media is there to capture their vapid remarks. They pray that their passionate nonsense will make the evening news. If they have the

slightest bit of sense, they will help pass this budget. Perhaps, after they’ve blown off enough steam, they will. The discussion about the debt ceiling and the division between domestic and military spending is a recurrent one. Both Congress and the Senate have mixed feelings around the deal that our country has cut with Iran. We have limited Iran’s ability to manufacture nuclear weapons, and we have imposed some checks and balances to keep them to their word. How do you cut a deal with the devil? Can we really trust Iran? For the longest time I have had mixed feeling about the deal, mostly because I really think that part of the deal should be to release American citizens, like the Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, who are being held in Iran. After much contemplation, I am persuaded that the Iran deal is better than anything we’ve had until now. We’re going to deal with a freelance devil, or a devil with a contract. We can’t verify a thing with the freelance devil. We have significant, though not perfect, limits to Iran’s arms accumu-

lation, so we’ve cut a deal with the devil with a contract. That’s not perfect but it is better than nothing. Would we prefer the Donald Trump nonsense of “I can negotiate with anyone? Somebody would negotiate his comedic idiocy out of the room. It is almost impossible that Congress will pass the twelve bills that are part of our budget. Given that, the next best choice is to maintain the status quo, or impose a percentage cut until a budget deal is cut. Planned Parenthood and Iran should not even be part of the conversation. The deadline, however, has seemed to collide with the drama. There are folks who understand that the budget, or some version of it, needs to be approved by October 1. They just don’t plan to sacrifice their dramatic moment by doing the right thing. Will government shut down? Only if these presidential postures decide that their drama trumps an important deadline. ANYWHERE BUT IN MY HOUSE Before the celebration is over perhaps someone ought to think about it. Was the announcement of a trauma center really a victory for the protesters that has been ever so vigilant for several years in picketing and demonstrating against the University of Chicago hospitals? Yes, there will be a trauma center, but several miles

to the west of the University of Chicago Hospitals. As a matter of fact it will not even be close to the university at 63rd and California at Holy Cross Hospital. Is there a need for several trauma centers on the south and west sides of Chicago? You betcha!!! So while we celebrate that we have a new trauma center, it was real slick of the University of Chicago to give money for it to be anywhere but in their house!!!

What was a surprise was the finger pointed at one of the wealthy Brothers that has been the concessionaire over at Midway Airport for some years now. You see dey said that he been paying the Cong-Rev.’s relative to do work at the church. Ima was wondering when dere was an article in our

I guess Mare Rahm done got over his scare that he wouldn’t be able to carry out the plan to totally destroy Black folks in Chicago, cause he is full speed ahead in wrecking the schools. a few blocks to the medical marijuana facility where it is proposed. To make that same person travel to the North Side might make the product unavailable to them. The protesters are saying they don’t want the business in the vacant Social Security office. They seem not to understand that the medical marijuana operation will add to the local tax base. An empty building doesn’t do that. An empty building will not create the jobs that this new business will. Is there any part of the South Side that does not need well paying legitimate jobs? It is a very good site because it is not on a main drag, has more than ample parking and is an area that

Rahm Emanuel over three years we’ll see you again. By then maybe he would have decided that the Mare’s job really ain’t for him. By any means necessary!!!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR There are some protesters who showed up at the Zoning Board of Appeals hearing, but those 50 or 75 people in no way speak for the entire 8th Ward. I hope city and zoning board officials will see there are many, many more people unopposed or even ambivalent about the medical marijuana locating on Greenwood. Most of the people who would need such a facility are people with ailments that are very prevalent in the Black community. No dispensary at this location will mean no medical marijuana facility on the South Side. Someone with an illness that limits their mobility or time away from home might easily travel a mile or

people has been fasting for 30 days and their health is deteriorating. How the little ballerina can walk past these folks and not even meeting to discuss the issue of the Dyett school being a “Green School,” not an arts school, shows us how cold hearted the ballerina really is. I know he hasn’t completed one year of his 4 year reelection term, but time seems to roll around faster when you having fun. So Ima says to Mare Rahm have your fun, in a little

What would be perfect in all of this protest about the medical marijuana company coming to Greenwood is if all of the people who are being paid to be protesters would identify themselves as such. They are making too much noise for this to be solely a community problem. I have been around long enough to know there are ulterior motives behind trying to keep the facility from opening at that location. Evan Brown

find humor in so she don’t join dese folks who are deciding dey can’t stand it no more and dey turn a gun on themselves. So here’s something lighthearted so we can face anudder day!!! A DEA officer stopped at a ranch in Texas, and talked with an old rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher said, “Okay, but don’t go in that field over there.....”, as he pointed out the location. The DEA officer verbally exploded saying, “ Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me!” Reaching into his rear pants pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this ucking badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish.... On any land!! No questions asked or answers given!! Have I made myself clear?.... do you understand?!!” The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores. A short time later, the old rancher heard loud screams, looked up, and saw the DEA officer running for his life, being chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull...... With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The rancher threw down his tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of his lungs..... “Your badge, show him your ucking BADGE!!”

Fair Housing Act has unfinished business By Charlene Crowell In early September, public policy experts, housing advocates, civil rights leaders, academicians and more came together for three days to listen, learn and craft a way forward to advance housing rights and opportunities. Convened by HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, the conference held September 1-3 remembered major milestones in the fight for fair housing, recalled noteworthy achievements and itemized all that still remains to be accomplished. As co-sponsor of the 1968 Fair Housing Act (FHA), Walter Mondale, former Vice President and Minnesota Senator termed the Act’s passage as “one of the great miracles in modern history.” His opening keynote address also spoke to contemporary challenges to dismantle residential segregation and governmental policies that deny equal housing. “The Fair Housing Act has unfinished business,” noted Mondale. “When high-income Black families cannot qualify for applied loans and are steered away from white suburbs, the goals of the Fair Housing Act are not fulfilled.” “When the federal and state gov-

ernments will pay to build new suburban highways, streets, sewers, school and parks but then allow these communities to exclude affordable housing, the goals of the Fair Housing Act are not fulfilled,” continued Mondale. “When we build most new subsidized housing in poor Black and Latino neighborhoods, the goals of the Fair Housing Act are not fulfilled.” Many of Mr. Mondale’s concerns were echoed by other presenters. For example, according to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, in just the last three years, Justice’s Civil Rights Division filed more than 100 lawsuits including 69 pattern or practices lawsuits, to combat housing and lending discrimination. Housing testing, a key tool used to determine whether housing providers are complying with federal fair housing laws, has resulted in over $13 million in damages and civil penalties awarded since 1991. “One investigation found that a nationwide mortgage lender has systematically charged higher interest rates to Hispanic and Afri can-American borrowers,” noted Lynch. “Another revealed that city officials, law enforcement and a local housing authority in Los Ange-

Harry C.Crowell Alford Charlene les County had engaged in a targeted campaign to discourage African-Americans from moving to and living in the area by enforcing the Housing Choice Voucher program in a prejudicial manner.” In another conference session, Steven Rosenbaum, head of housing and civil enforcement at Justice’s civil rights division, warned of more redlining cases. “Based on what is on my docket right now, stayed tuned,” said Rosenbaum. “There are still lenders who seem to think it is OK to steer minority borrowers to cer-

tain loan officers or certain brokers who they know will charge more.” Later this month new mortgage data will be released as part of the annual Home Mortgage Disclosure Act report. One of the few resources that details mortgage lending by race and ethnicity, the most recent report – for 2013 – showed low levels of lending for borrowers of color. Further, when mortgage loans were approved for Black and Latino consumers, the vast majority were backed by government-insured programs from FHA, VA or USDA – and very few from the private sector. The private sector exclusion means more hard-earned money is taken out of the pockets from borrowers of color as government-backed mortgages are more expensive. In the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that upheld the use of disparate impact as a tool to fight for fair housing and a new HUD rule the Attorney General offered the gathering and HUD Justice’s full support. “[I] am proud to support the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s new rule on Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH),” said Lynch, “which is a crucial step toward ending historic

patterns of segregation and removing disparities based on race, color, religion, sex, familiar status, national origin and disability.” The new rule, announced this past July, clarifies and simplifies existing fair housing obligations. By creating a streamlined Assessment of the Fair Housing planning process, HUD hopes communities will be helped to analyze their own local challenges to fair housing choice and their own goals and priorities to address remaining barriers to fair housing in their communities. Also voicing support for HUD’s new rule was Wade Henderson, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 200 national organizations. “We need HUD to continue its AFFH enforcement efforts . . . . To send a strong signal to jurisdictions that it’s serious about compliance on this issue,” said Henderson. “And HUD needs all of us to engage with local governments in the coming few years to hold them accountable, and to also push to see that HUD itself has the capacity it needs to do its job in the right way.” (Continued on page 16)

COMMUNITY

Chicago’s Rosenwald was friend to Blacks across the country By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ Rosenwald is such a great documentary about a man who was born in Springfield, Illinois, in 1862 to a Jewish immigrant couple from Germany. He never completed high school and later ended up in Chicago to become one of the most celebrated supporters of the AfricanAmerican community during the first half of the 20th Century. Julius Rosenwald is best known for being a clothier and part owner of Sears, Roebuck and Company, where he made his mark on the way retail was operated and revolutionized in the United States. Sears eventually had a huge catalog that was delivered to people across the country and from which people everywhere ordered goods. He went on to share his riches—in accordance with his Jewish upbringing around being charitable to the poor and repairing the world—through the Rosenwald Fund. He was influenced by the writings

of Tuskegee ’s Booker T. Washington and after donating funds for the Tuskegee Institute; he started on a crusade to build schools in the rural South, with partial help from the community at large and others within the town surrounding the proposed school. The schools that were erected in the South were built by local townspeople, once all the funds had been raised. Although Sears had “readymade” houses for sale, Rosenwald didn’t want to just have those buildings erected as schools. He wanted the sweat and equity of the community to show in the buildings. Afterward, however, Sears benches and furnishings were used to complete the inside of the schools. All together, African-American residents built more than 5,300 schools across the segregated South during the early part of the 20th century, providing 660,000 Black children with access to education. It seems when Rosenwald saw or experienced something that he thought would be a good idea in

Because of his modesty, Rosenwald’s philanthropy and social activism are not well known today, despite giving away $62 million in his lifetime. Recipients of the Rosenwald Fund to support AfricanAmerican artists included Gordon Parks Jr., who took celebrated photographs of Ella Watson, the Washington, D.C., charwoman or office cleaning woman, Marian Anderson, W.E.B. DuBois and Langston Hughes. Dr. Charles Drew received $1,000 from the fund that made it possible for him to complete medical school and discover a way to store and preserve blood plasma that in turn helped develop blood banks that initially helped save the lives of countless soldiers in World War II. Senator Julian Bond recalled how ROSENWALD COURTS DEVELOPERS’ historic Rosenwald Building in Bronzeville. Another lasting testament to Rosenwald is the Rosenwald Courts at 46th and Michigan, which is currently being renovated. The documentary shows how this building was home to many of Black intelligentsia and how it was the cultural beacon in Bronzeville during its heyday—all because of Rosenwald. Interviews in the film include those with Maya Angelou, Bond, Rep. Danny Davis, Rita Dove, Dr. Timuel Black, Benjamin Jealous, Rep. John Lewis, Clarence Page, Eugene Robinson, Cokie Roberts and Ambassador David Saperstein. As I watched this documentary, it was just overwhelming to learn all the things in which Rosenwald had been involved. Although he was driven by profit with Sears, he was a true champion in the civil rights arena, well before it was duly named as such. “Rosenwald” is a great documentary bursting with amazing information for those unfamiliar with Julius Rosenwald. Legendary Jazz musicians advocate on disability issues in Chicago Jazz Artists Henry Butler and Fred Hersch participate in Jazz Fest and community programming in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act Chicago Jazz Festival attracts some of the most talented jazz musicians from across the country every year. Two of this year’s performers, Henry Butler and Fred Hersch, were not only in town for main stage performances, but also to help raise awareness amongst diverse Chicago communities about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how its promise of equal opportunity benefits everyone. Butler and Hersch’s performances at Jazz Festival were supported by ADA 25 Chicago, a network of nearly 200 partners convened by The Chicago Community Trust who leveraged this year’s 25th anniversary of the ADA to increase access and inclusion for people with disabilities throughout metropolitan Chicago. “Since the ADA was enacted 25 years ago, the world has begun to change,” said Butler, who was

blinded during infancy. “For me the greatest improvement has been technology. But there is still so much more to be done that I am delighted to be in Chicago to help bring awareness to the continued opportunities to make full participation a reality for all people with disabilities.” Butler conducted a master class for local jazz students in conjunction with After School Matters at the Chicago Cultural Center during his visit where the students were introduced to the ADA for the first time and were able to converse with, ask questions of and glean jazz advice from Butler. “The ADA is critical legislation that addresses discrimination in the U.S.,” said Hersch, who is living with HIV/AIDS and is a dedicated advocate for related services and education agencies. “This law ensures that no one living with, or suspected of living with, HIV/AIDS can be denied access to education, employment, health services, cultural activities – and if you are, there are legal consequences.” At an awareness event at the Center on Halsted on September 3, Hersch discussed with a pri-

Sometimes people

get what’s coming to them.” Everyone involved with “Unsullied” is excited for its success, but no one more than Rice, who could very well liken the moral of the story to his own life. “I want [audience members] to understand that you don’t have to be a victim. The world isn’t geared for you to fail. You’re going to be put in dire situations, and it’s incumbent on you to survive through any means possible. Hope can propel you, like it does Reagan, to levels you have never imagined.” Rice concludes: “When people watch this film, I want them to keep this in mind. It’s going to put you at the edge of your seat. So sit back, eat your popcorn and enjoy, because it’s going to be thrilling.” Look for “Unsullied” at your local theater.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Throw your stones. Recently, Kathie Lee Gifford gave a beautiful tribute to her husband, Frank, after his transition. She spoke of their travels to Israel and seeing where David threw the stone to slay Goliath. Kathy emphasized that whenever people would visit their home, her husband would walk past his trophies from sports and broadcasting and give guests and grandchildren those stones that he collected during his trip to Israel. His mission was to remind and encourage people that the significance was not David retrieving the stone from his victim’s head to merely boast a victory. However, it was all about trusting in the true and living God so much that you are willing to move in faith towards the impossible, knowing that ‘…with God all things are possible.’ (Matt 19:26). To throw your stone is to use the gift and talents that God has given to you. It’s not about your ability, being the best at what you do. But it’s your availability in allowing

Effie Rolfe God to show His best through you. Pastor John Hannah shared the story of Kathy Lee and reminded us that unless you throw your stone

and bless the world with your gift, when you die, you will only have a headstone. God wants someone who is willing to be used to give Him the glory. Often those whom society deem as lacking in experience, intelligence, looks, education and so on—are the ones that God uses to confound the wise. Otherwise, one could easily brag on your own connections, education and what you did or had. When you have little to work with, then God takes little and it becomes much when placed in the Master’s hand. People can then see that He added His super to your natural and that has made all the difference. Last Sunday, my Pastor, John Hannah of New Life Covenant Southeast shared the Kathy Gifford tribute with the congregation. He elaborated on the message and admonished folk that if you don’t throw your stones during your lifetime—you will simply have a headstone after your life has ended. For clarity’s sake, to throw your stone is to use the gift that God has given you to catapult you to greatness and

victorious living. Pastor Hannah reminded us that life is more than going to work, wearing red bottoms, beautiful wardrobes and living large and in charge. It’s about making a mark in the world. We must make a profound impact on the people that touch us, as well as bring change within the places where we live. We’ve often mentioned the importance of using the gifts and talents that God has so richly bestowed. These gifts were specifically distributed for the unique purpose and intent to be a blessing to the world, rather than selfish reasons or just to allow you the comforts of life. Life is about making an impact and a marked difference in your world, your community, job, industry, state and ultimately the world. You are the light of the world. When you shine, people can see the greatness and bigness of God working in and through you. Get up and pick up your stone. Establish your goals and throw your stones in the direction of your destiny. You may need more than one stone—David had five but only

needed one. Perhaps, you may not be sure of what God wants you to do…choose the five talents or gifts that come easy for you. Are you good at speaking, are you persuasive, have you been blessed with good looks, do you write well, can you organize or maybe you’re creative? Choose your top talents and then narrow it down to one. Begin to perfect it until you are good enough until you can throw your stone to victory of making a change for the better to impact the world. Not only will your life be remembered, your legacy will be remembered by the lives that you helped to make a profound impact. Will you take a step of faith and throw your stone…? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. The Crusader Gospel Corner Jonathan McReynolds has taken the gospel music industry by storm. Raised in the fiery Church of God in Christ–he was the consummate church boy. His music touches the heart and pierces the soul. McReynolds unapologetically coins the traditional message with the hip sound and powerful everyday lyrics that is relative and speaks to truth. Kirk Franklin tweeted, ‘Jonathan McReynolds has a fresh sound. God

Johnthan McReynolds can trust him with His music.’ “Lovin’ Me,” “Pressure” and his latest single “Gotta’ Have You” are songs he writes on purpose. “No Gray” is the song that put the talented Chicago native on the map. In fact, the unique track has a powerful testimony and message that is relevant to many of today’s youth. “I was the consummate church boy,” said McReynolds who continued, “When you get to college you start smelling yourself and seeing what you can and can’t do. ‘No Gray’ was a self-evangelizing song for my www.chicagocrusader.com

friends and I. We were on the college campus of Columbia. If you know anything about that—it’s not a Christian college but pretty eclectic. We were trying to figure out how that ceremonial Jesus reaches real life. Sometimes there’s not enough application courses for youth. We know about Jesus and the style—but how does that live out throughout the week. This is what I have dedicated all of my music to…trying to express and explain particularly to my generation on how the ceremonial Jesus meets Monday through Saturday.” Growing up with a staunch COGIC background, he feels the church was accepting of his music. “I have an interesting story...I never sang at church, I was the organist, drummer, soundman and a whole bunch of everything else,” said McReynolds. “I can probably count on my hands how many times I’ve sung and how many times I’ve sung at church. So I grew up not paying attention to singers and not even needing to know the words to songs.” Continuing he said, “My musical ear has definitely been affected by COGIC but songwriting has not been as much… I get the message in my heart and conviction that comes with Pentecostal singing. But not the actual style since I wasn’t creating music at that time. They (my church) love me. What makes them happy is that I’m a good guy. They know where I come from and my character and that we have raised him up to be a light. Whenever I’m in town—I go back to New Original Church of God in

Christ on the South Side of Chicago. The last time I went back the Pastor wanted me to preach.” Recently, the Moody Bible Institute graduate received his Master’s Degree in biblical studies and feels much more confident in his knowledge of scripture. “I thought it was very important to stand in the gap,” said McReynolds. “I get to church probably once every month or two—at least my home church. I’m always at somebody else’s church. I knew I was gonna’ miss that and God had already made a way for me. I knew that academic structure and reading of the bible was gonna’ be very important for me in that season. It wasn’t about getting a Master or not even finishing. It was about the entire process helping me at that moment. What was very important for me was not the songwriting but the platform that was given to me because of the songwriting. People are now asking me to come and speak and do panels and everything else. It was very important to me that I was disseminating the right information. So much more than the music itself, what is asked of you after they hear your music? Pastor (Marvin) Winans—a great guy incredible musician, preacher and supporter of my music. The first time he asked me to come to his church—he didn’t ask me to come and sing but to come and speak. So it’s that type of deal. Ok, when we hear the music—we want to see what else you have. And I wanted to make sure that I was more than just a song or a pretty face,”

McReynolds said smiling. Also, featured on Israel Houghton’s latest CD, performing a tribute to Kim Burrell at the Essence Festival, as well as ministering at several venues every week, McReynolds is moving full speed ahead. “My album is coming out in September. It’s gonna’ be called “Stage 2.” You know life is in stages. I was a student at Columbia and now I’m a teacher at Columbia. It’s a slightly different lifestyle. Different context and I’m looking forward to people seeing an updated version of who I am—an updated diary—I guess. I’m touring with Erica Campbell and the group, Poets in Autumn. So its gonna be a lovely and wonderfully busy 2015.” The CD entitled “Life Music: Stage 2” will be released on September 18

and available wherever music is sold. *** This week, through September 20, Bishop William Ellis and the Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Morgan Park request your presence during the Church’s 92nd Church Convention and his 73rd Birthday. EMPIRE

See the house that Luscious ‘built’ near Chicago By Erick Johnson

I

t’s the biggest, most luxurious mansion on the block. It’s also the fictional home of perhaps the biggest Black television drama that’s about to hit prime time once again. But if you ever want to visit the home of Luscious Lyons or his sons, Andre, Jamal or Hakeem, hop on the I-90 West expressway and you will be there in about an hour. Yes, the powerful, fictional family dynasty from FOX’s smash hit television drama, “Empire” is living large in Chicago. Actually, the house is in Barrington Hills, an affluent northwest suburb that’s about 38 miles west of Chicago. Barrington Hills is filled with mega mansions that rival those in Chicago’s north shore communities. The home is just one of many locations in Chicagoland where “Empire” is filmed. Some of the scenes are filmed in New York.

But the centerpiece of the show is the Lyons mansion. With many aesthetic embellishments made on the house, it has become a place where art imitates life or vice versa. Luscious Lyons’ (Terrance Howard) tough and opulent lifestyle resembles the hard driving

character of the mansion’s real-life owner, a strip club mogul who put the gigantic French Provincial home on the market several times, even lowering the price to woo buyers. Owning a mansion in an exclusive neighborhood is a dream to people of color. Luscious Lyons’ success is part of the allure of ‘Empire,’ Black America’s version of the defunct ABC drama Dynasty. The house is located at 45 Lakeview Lane, Barrington Hills. The house is so exclusive, it has its own private driveway. But when the Lyons family opens their home once again during “Empire’s” season premier next Wednesday, September 23, viewers will once again have a chance to see what’s inside a

home that many can only dream about owning in their lifetime. The mansion is a sprawling 14room palatial estate that sits in a cul-de-sac on 9 acres. Barrington Hills is one of several villages in the area with a zip code of 60010. It’s one of the wealthiest zip codes in the country. The median household income for Barrington Hills is just over $145,000. For a piece of paradise in Barrington Hills, the city requires would-be homeowners to purchase a minimum of five acres to build their homes. This requirement has led to huge mansions on large acres, many of which have more than one house. This includes the mansion used in “Empire.” The three-story, 20,000 square-foot home has a sixcar garage. An elevator transports guests to one of five large bedrooms, including an over the top master bedroom. In addition to nine bathrooms, the mansion has four fireplaces, three dining rooms, two kitchens, a bar, an entertainment room, a library, a recreation room, a gallery, an exercise room and laundry. The brick limestone house has a large pool and a panoramic view of a lake. In addition, the estate also includes a separate guesthouse. On “Empire,” the mansion has an even grander appearance with plenty of embellishments.

The study where Luscious Lyons have threatened his enemies is not as dark and ultra luxurious. Instead, the room is decorated in walnut oak and cherry leather chairs. And the dining room, the scene of many squabbles among the Lyons family, does not have a Black lacquered table with super stylish chairs. But in the main living room, the black baby grand piano that has drawn the Lyons clan together is there in real life. Initially, the interior scenes were shot inside the home. Empire’s mastermind Lee Daniels made the décor darker to reflect the tough, masculine character of Luscious Lyons, the family patriarch and a former drug dealer who now heads Empire Entertainment. It’s an extremely successful multimillion dollar hip hop recording company that has afforded him a lifestyle that’s the envy of many. But in reality, the mansion today remains an orphan in the housing market. According to Cook County property records, it has been on and off the market since 2013. The initial price of the mansion was $15.9 million, but after several price cuts, the home is on sale for $13 million. The annual price for property taxes are $43,326. The “Empire” mansion was built in 2008. It’s actually owned by Sam Cecola, a strip-club mogul, who like Luscious Lyons, has had similar problems while trying to run his real-life empire. For decades, Cecola owned a Las Vegas strip joint that was reportedly the focus of illicit activities. He reportedly ran Chicago’s infamous Admiral Theater, an adult entertainment playground. Like his fictional counterpart, Cecola spent time behind bars. He was sent to the slammer in 1990’s for not paying his taxes. The real estate agent who is handling the sale, Thomas Gorman, Baird & Warner prefers to keep details of the house and its relationship with the show private.
