I will kill myself before I go to a nursing home,” White, 89, told the Crusader in an exclusive interview. “I’d rather be dead than to live in a nursing home.” And White’s live-in caregiver, Kelly Louden, fears the worse if White is forced to move to a nursing home by the county due to her finances. “She will die instantly if she goes to a nursing home. The depression would kill her,” Louden said. “Do I think she is suicidal? No, but I also think she would not last in a nursing home.” The restaurant, Izola’s at 422 E. 79th St., opened in 1940 and was the fourth Blackowned business to do so along 79th Street, according to White. But White’s financial problems started building up last March, when the soulfood eatery, founded and owned by White, closed after she fell ill. And the management team she left in charge while she was

Teachers and Board reject arbitrator’s plan By Matthew Bruce Correspondent The Chicago Teachers Union set the stage for showdown with Chicago Public Schools, unanimously voting to reject an arbitrator’s fact-finding report on Wednesday just hours after CPS officials opted to do the same. That opens the door for a possible CTU strike next month as educators and city officials in the nation’s third largest school district fight over a new collective bargaining agreement. And during a press conference just after the vote, CTU President Karen Lewis had a message for the nearly 30,000 teachers and support personnel that the union represents: “Stay tuned,” and “Be prepared.” “We want to get a new contract,” Lewis said. “Now how do you want that to happen? Do you want it the easy way, or do you want it the hard way?” CPS voted to reject the fact-finding report earlier in the day. And at about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the CTU’s house of delegates voted unanimously to follow suit. The vote essentially served as a 30-day notice authorizing the union to stage a walkout as soon as Aug. 19 if they choose to. That would be six days after a third of CPS students return to the classrooms, and a little over two weeks before the rest of the district resumes classes. “I think it’s time for us to reset this relationship,” Lewis said. “I have a strong suspi-

The fact finder determined that the teacher’s union should be compensated with pay raises of more than 35 per cent over the next four years to work longer school hours and extra days under Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s plan for city schools. The report called for a nearly 15
percent pay raise to teachers the upcoming school year. That would likely mean thousands of layoffs, and deep cuts in the classrooms as the school district faces a $665 million budget deficit this year, and $3 billion shortfall over the next three, according to CPS officials. In an email response on Wednesday, CPS spokesperson Becky Carroll blasted the report, saying the arbitrator did not follow the correct criteria in scrutinizing the facts of
the negotiations between the two sides. Emmanuel has offered a two percent pay increase for the teachers, but the union is demanding four percent in wage hikes. Lewis said issues such as layoff recall, health care, and seniority establishments for experienced teachers will weigh heavily in the upcoming discussions as well. “This is not about money,” she said. “It’s never been about money. It’s about looking at things proportionately.”

Under the theme “Celebrating the Gardner Legacy,” they are called a “national treasure” in America with Rev. Spencer Leak, Sr., vowing to resurrect “No Crime Day.” The powerhouse couple who began their hair care business in their basement later moving it into a sprawling building at 8830 S. Dobson which is now the home of WVON, were lifted up as an excellent role model for generations to come. Coyden Palmer Officials in south suburban Robbins are scrambling to raise nearly $9,000 to replace an air conditioning unit that was stolen from the village’s library last week. Robbins police believe copper thieves stole the unit from the library along with one at Horace Mann School in neighboring Blue Island last week. The thieves got on the roof, cut wires, and made off with the condenser and cooling elements in the massive HVAC unit, which weighs over 1,000 pounds, according to police chief Johnny Holmes. The Robbins Library serves as a cooling center for residents and the library’s director says with temperatures
again in the 90’s this week, she is fearful for elderly residents in the village. “Whoever did this is putting people’s lives at risk,” said Priscilla Coatney. “Not only do we have 30 to 35 children a day coming here during the summer to read, this building serves as a lifeline to some of our most at-risk residents. This was a commercial unit that could cool 5,000 square feet.” Coatney said the thieves carefully disassembled the unit and made off with all the parts needed. She took Crusader on the roof of the building where you could see how many of the screws from the disbanded unit were left behind in a nice, neat pile. Brandon Gardner, 28, the oldest son of Gary Gardner, is a third-year medical student at the University of Chicago. “I want to serve the community as a doctor just like my grandfather did but in a different capacity.” He wants to specialize as a pediatrician or a cardiologist.

Mason said he had anticipated much help from the Black community but so far that has not happened. “It saddens me that not one Black,

Many of them ate at her restaurant for free and now when she needs help the most they let her down,” he said angrily. “I am upset at how all this went down from the mismanagement of the restaurant while Izola was away sick to the lack of leadership by Black politicians.” In September, $12,000 was raised at a fundraiser held at her South Side home but $35,000 was needed at the time to reopen the restaurant. Since the closure of her restaurant, White said she lives her days at home doing nothing. “All I do is watch TV and I am not used to sitting around doing nothing. I love to help people and cook. That is my legacy and that is how I want to be remembered,” White added. “I pray to God that I am able to reopen (my restaurant). The closure of Izola’s is not only a set back for her but for the Black community too, said Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Dorothy Brown. “She (Izola) has meant a lot to me personally and I wish there were more I could do to help her because what she started years ago has turned into a community mainstay,” said Brown, who also attended the fundraiser in September. “I love Izola and I will always be here for her.” 3
OPINION
EDITORIAL CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE BLACK COMMUNITY It is a sad fact of life that the worldwide Black community is disproportionately impacted by a number of ills. You can almost name any physical and social malady and you will find a study that says that Black people are more affected than others. Now comes global warming, or, more appropriately, climate change. As expected, pundits are saying that the Black community will be disproportionately impacted by this challenge as well. One of the problems we face, however, is that the African American community, in particular, has so many other problems that scant attention is paid to climate change. One reason may be that the problem is so humongous that people feel helpless in the face of this threat. Moreover, for people who have to be coaxed to vote when it comes to politics because too many feel that their one little vote won’t count; the notion of individually having an effect on climate change is overwhelming. Let’s back up a bit. Climate change, also known as global warming, is, according to many scientists, caused by human activities, though everyone is not in agreement with this assertion. Basically, burning fossil fuels releases gases into the atmosphere, the most known being carbon dioxide. These gases act as a shield preventing heat from leaving the atmosphere, and over time, the gases build up and so does the heat, causing a rise of temperature on the planet. The gases act like the glass in a greenhouse by letting the sun’s heat in but not letting it out, which is why the phenomena is called the “greenhouse effect.” The result is projected to be rising global temperatures, increasing storm activity, the melting of the glaciers and an attendant rise in sea levels, changes in ocean currents and increased droughts and floods. A lot of pundits loudly decry the notion that climate change is a reality. This is perplexing in light of recent situations. One of the biggest demonstrations, according to some, was Hurricane Katrina, which had a devastating impact on the Black community in New Orleans and elsewhere in America as citizens were placed in a position of helping displaced refugees. There were enormous mental, physical, psychological, emotional, and economic consequences of this storm. If we are not convinced by Hurricane Katrina, we should at least pay attention to the current heat wave and drought that is devastating America. Heat waves can cause worsened air pollution. African Americans are disproportionately affected by pollution because of the fact that they are more at risk for asthma than other communities. And because African Americans are less likely to have health insurance, there can be a deleterious economic impact related to this facet of climate change. The bottom line is that African Americans stand to lose when it comes to climate change, but the community would also benefit greatly if something can be done about it. This is another area where unified political, social and economic unity could have positive benefits on the condition of Blacks. There is a complicating factor, however. It just may be that global warming may not be confined to human actions…there seems to be evidence that most of the planets in our solar system are experiencing a warming trend. Our sun is changing. If this is the case, we still have an opportunity to mitigate somewhat if we can develop strategies to combat climate change. Once again, this would necessitate a unified approach. Whatever the case, it is clear that climate change is not a “White man’s problem,” it belongs to all of us. A luta continua.
There was really something unsettling about watching this year’s major league baseball All-Star Game. At first I was really happy that the two Chicago teams had a total of six representatives on the American and National League rosters. But as the game went on that joy turned to melancholy. Of the six players the Cubs and White Sox sent, not one was African American. Of course, if you passed Starlin Castro of the Cubs on the street you would say he is Black, but he is a native of the Dominican Republic. These six players represent what has happened to baseball in the Black community across the U.S. unless you are in your mid-50s or later; it is probably impossible for you to remember a time when Black ballplayers dominated baseball – including the all-star game. It seems a lot longer than 35 years or so ago when men like Al Oliver, Willie Stargell, Reggie Jackson, Billy Williams and others were factors in every all-star game they played. Black baseball fans regardless of what city they lived in were proud to see men who looked like them competing

in the game. Part of the tragedy about no African American players in this year’s game is it was preventable. Major League Baseball has incorporated a way for fans to vote players onto the roster. It doesn’t cost anything and can be done from one’s house, apartment, school or the public library. Another aspect is that for 70 or so years Black men have made incredible contributions to bring the game to the level it is today. Even before Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby and Don Newcombe, Black men and women such as Mamie “Peanut” Johnson were showing folks how much fun the game could be and how it should be played. One of my proudest moments personally happened in the fall of 1971 when the Pittsburgh Pirates fielded the first all-Black lineup in the league’s history. It probably isn’t a big deal that no African Americans from Chicago are starting, but it does seem like a slap in the face to Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ferguson Jenkins and others that we don’t care enough to vote for current Black players.

Then there is our abundant quantity of coal. This is the cheapest form of energy and many of our utility companies rely on it. The harvesting of coal is a serious job creator in states like Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, etc. Our president doesn’t want to slow this down; he wants to kill it! His henchman, the EPA, has issued the Utility MACT Rule which requires new mercury air standards that most utility plants cannot possibly meet. The result will be about 32 utility facilities shutting down. That is a tremendous amount of jobs (in this recession) and utility prices will skyrocket as supplies dwindle. Play that Fiddle!

Let’s take a look at some of the examples. God has blessed our country with natural energy resources such as oil, natural gas and coal. Maybe that’s why he is mad about it – God has blessed us. He is attacking the life blood of our energy needs. He wants us to stop using these products but has no clear solution or even a hint about how we can do without them. Our tariff free trading partner Canada has immense reserves of oil and would love to ship vast amounts via the Keystone Pipeline. Everyone but environmental extremists is cheering for this to happen. What’s the big problem?

No family or business can run properly without a budget. Our president is trying to manage and lead a nation without a clear budget. That’s why in his short tenure he has increased our debt by over $4 trillion dollars (that’s a T). I can’t recall any other president in our history running our nation without a budget. Former President Lyndon Baines Johnson vowed to make war on poverty. He started the food stamp program with a budget of $268 million in 1964. Our president doesn’t fight poverty; he promotes it. Last year we spent over $78 billion in food stamps. We are becoming a nation of paupers and he is playing the fiddle. Finally, there is the low regard for the Black Church. How do you jump into the moral discussion of same sex marriage? That debate belongs to our church not the White House. This is an affront to our beloved long standing institution – just for a few votes. Mr. President, I am calling you out. Stop the ugliness and tend to the crisis at hand. Raising taxes in a recession and killing jobs via all of the above is a blue print for disaster. Your record with Black procurement is now at 1.1 percent (GAO). Nixon did better than you! Big Republican Lies about Small Businesses By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Two things always happen when there is a debate about whether Congress and the president should extend the George W. Bush tax cuts: 1) Republicans drag out the tired and misleading argument that any effort to return the tax rate to the pre-2001 levels amounts to “a job-killing tax hike” and 2) The corporate media fails to cite evidence that the popular GOP talking point is, in fact, a lie. President Obama has reignited the debate by proposing yet again that we return to the pre-Bush tax rates. Individuals earning up to $200,000 and couples making $250,000 would be exempt from returning to the higher rate. If implemented, only the top 2 percent of taxpayers would see a tax increase. But Republicans are opposing Obama’s proposal because they are doing what they always do best – protect the wealthy. But instead of acknowledging the truth, they prefer to use the disguise that they are acting on behalf of small business owners, although we know their main interest is proThe Chicago Crusader

As the Los Angeles Times reported, “Polls also show that Republicans do better when they frame upper-income tax increases as a threat to small businesses, a group that voters tend to like.” There is nothing wrong with reporters quoting Republican talking points. But there is something wrong with the corporate media, in an effort to appear fair and balanced, giving equal weight to dueling claims when one is demonstrably false. Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting, the media watchdog group, stated: “The corporate media’s bias
toward giving credence to official claims from both political parties means you have to treat that question of facts as a matter of opinion – which, of course, is a problem, if you think that separating fact from misinformation is a key part of a journalist’s job.” FAIR added, “And the failure to challenge Republican distortions gives them no reason to stop making them…This is especially true when media don’t tell the public that the claim is almost entirely bogus.” Among the examples cited by FAIR: USA Today (7/10/12) – Headline: “Obama Seeks to Extend Tax Cuts to Middle Class; GOP Critics Say Plan Will Hurt Small Business.” Washington Post (7/10/12) – Reported that Republicans “charged that the president’s plan would raise taxes on small-business owners.” It also said, “Obama said his plan would cover 98 percent of the working public and 97 percent of small-business owners.” Los Angeles Times (7/11/12) – Said Obama’s plan “would extend George W. Bush-era tax cuts for those making up to $250,000 a year but not for upper-income

Americans.” As FAIR noted, “That is incorrect; wealthy Americans will also receive a tax cut on income they earn up to the $250,000 level.” As Media Matters, another media watchdog group, pointed out, Fox News makes a habit of letting hosts and guests impart inaccurate information about the plan to let the Bush tax cuts expire on the richest 2 percent of Americans. For example, Alex Cortes of the Restore the Dream Foundation said on Fox and Friends when the issue was being debated in 2010 that returning to the pre-Bush levels “aren’t just tax cuts for the so-called wealthy. It’ll hit 50 percent of all small business income.” According to the Congressional Budget Office, the two large tax cuts under George W. Bush resulted in a loss of $1.5 trillion in federal revenue. Obama agreed to a deal with Republicans to extend them until the end of this year, which will bring the total to $2.8 trillion. Now, he’s proposing another, more limited extension. If the Bush tax rates are allowed to expire, the top two income brackets will rise from the current levels of 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 and 39.6 percent. The Tax Policy Center, a joint project between the Urban Institute Saturday, July 21, 2012
and the Brookings Institution, stated, “Most small businesses report their income on individual tax returns, either on Section C (for self-employment or sole proprietorships), Schedule E (for S corporations) or schedule F (for farms. We don’t know how many of these businesses are really small.” Approximately 36 million taxpayers report business income on their 1040s, the Tax Policy Center found. And not all of them own small businesses – some receive income from side jobs or from rental property. “Only about 900,000, or 2.5 percent, would pay higher rates if the Bush tax cuts were allowed to expire for those in the top brackets,” the center found. In addition to citing that study, Media Matters said, “And according to PolitiFact, the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) has projected that in 2011, ‘Only 3 percent of all taxpayers who reported having positive business income will see their taxes go up under the proposed Democratic initiative’ of letting the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy expire.” In its report on the small busi(Continued on page 16) 5

Dr. Conrad Worrill In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in America, it is important that we understand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for
economic independence. We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance. One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self-reliant and self-sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world, we find one glaring problem — African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, cloth-
ing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book Race First, which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civilrights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corp oration (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house.
Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact is, this is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was
our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man... Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

Fast-forward forty years, to Congressman Jesse Jackson. Many would argue that we’ve come a long way on mental health awareness, but some would argue the point. Many health plans do not even bother to cover mental health, and if they do, it is covered for a limited number of sessions. Having mental health problems is still enough of a stigma for some professionals to pay for mental health out of their pocket rather than have their mental health treatment be a matter of record. Comedians and others joke that when someone appears to behave erratically (or in some cases, extremely mindfully), they must be “off their meds.” The stigma remains, and it is stronger in the African American community than the majority community. Tell an African American friend or colleague about feeling down for more than a week or so (two weeks
Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill) has been away from Congress on medical leave for so long that his colleagues have been clamoring to know what’s wrong, and NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported that the Congressman was receiving treatment for addiction. The truth, according to Rep. Jackson’s staff, is that the Congressman is being treated in a residential facility for exhaustion and mood disorders. Why not say that in the first place? Because divulging one’s mental health status is often the kiss of death in politics and public life. It may be okay in Hollywood to speak exhaustion, mood swings, and other mental health issues. In that world, treatment is often followed by a late night talk show interview and a career revival. In contrast, any politician who has come out of the closet about his or her mental health gets anything but a hard time. Senator Thomas Eagleton (D-MO), who had been elected to local, state,
tals three times for physical and nervous exhaustion, was known to have suffered from depression, and reportedly received electroconvul-
sive therapy twice. While his mental health history was not part of the public record, his hospitalizations led to speculation that he had a drinking problem. Still, he was so effective as a campaigner and politician that he unseated an incumbent Democrat in his race for the United States Senate. When George McGovern learned that Eagleton had taken the antipsychotic drug Thorazine, and when his doctors spoke of his “manic depression,” he initially supported Eagleton. However, when McGovern learned that Eagleton’s depression could return, he asked Senator Eagleton to withdraw from the ticket and he complied. Even though 77 percent of the American people said Eagleton’s medical record would not affect their vote, Republican opposition was geared up to attack McGovern because of Eagleton’s mental health status, and the press showed their ignorance by rather cavalierly referring to Eagleton’s “shock therapy.” Since men are far less likely to seek treatment for mental health issues than women are, Senator Eagleton showed amaz-

Or, the response to manic episodes is “Child, you so crazy” as if that is a badge of honor, not a sign that help is needed. Every indicator we have of mental health utilization suggests that African Americans are less likely to seek help than their white counterparts, and while some of it may have to do with cost, some of it has to do with stigma. As widely as post-partum depression is known and discussed, African American women are only half as likely to seek help as white women. Study after study reports the underutilization of mental health services among African Americans. BUSINESS 45,630 consumers file complaints with CFPB Mortgages, credit cards, bank services among top issues By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist This July 21 will mark the second anniversary since President Obama signed into law sweeping financial reforms more commonly referred to as Dodd-Frank. For the first time in the nation’s history, consumer lending concerns became the permanent priority of a single office: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Now and according to a new CFPB report, consumers that take the time to file complaints are reaping tangible rewards – like a $30,000 refund. A 77-year old Army veteran and retired businessman living in Georgia was certain he had paid off his mortgage; but his mortgage servicer insisted he still owed money. To make matters even more complicated, the older gentleman was blind and had trouble finding paperwork that proved his home was free and clear. After CFPB got involved in late 2011, the bank agreed that the mortgage was fully repaid in 2007. For his trouble and his time, the bank refunded the borrower with a check for $30,000. In another settled complaint, CFPB helped a 31-year old waiter from Florida to reduce his monthly student loan repayments to an af-
fordable amount. A young man’s educational dream of becoming an artist led to enrollment at a for-profit college and then $110,000 of debt to graduate with an Associate’s Degree. Lacking a Bachelor’s Degree, he was unable to find work in his chosen field and began paying $700 a month to a private student loan lender. By the time his federal student loan payments were added, he could barely manage to make monthly ends meet after paying $1,100 in loan costs. When the private loan company refused to adjust payments, the young man contacted CFPB. CFPB determined that he was eligible for a reduced payment program that cut his monthly payment to only $407 for a year. Further, he is still working out a plan to reduce federal loan payments. The best news is that there are even more successful stories of how consumers working with the CFPB found other compensation, or new terms that enabled them to better manage financial debts. From July 21, 2011 through June 1, 2012, 45,630 consumers contacted the CFPB with a range of complaints. Mortgage issues ranked highest (19,250 complaints), followed by credit cards (16,840), bank products and services (6,490) and pri-
Charlene Crowell vate student loans (1,270). Of these complaints 81 percent have led to contacting identified companies for review and response. Others were referred to other regulatory agencies, found to be incomplete, or are pending with CFPB. Companies contacted by CFPB are also responding – responses have been received on approximately 33,000 complaints. To make filing complaints easier for consumers, CFPB accepts complaints via its website, by telephone,
mail, e-mail and fax. Consumers opting to phone speak with a tollfree, U.S.-based call center that offers assistance in 187 languages, and can accommodate the needs of both hearing and speech-impaired callers. With information in hand, CFPB then determines if the complaint falls within the Bureau’s enforcement authority. Once that basic threshold is met, affected companies are contacted for review and reply. While the complaint is in progress, consumers can log onto a secure portal or call the toll-free number to receive status updates, provide additional information and review responses submitted by companies. In addition to the consumer complaints received, CFPB has also gained further consumer insights through written comments on a range of topics that include but are not limited to: debt collection, equal credit, leasing, overdraft and payday lending. For example, in response to a larger than expected attendance at a January 2012 payday lending public hearing in Birmingham, CFPB offered a comment period for persons and organizations either unable to attend or speak. By the time the comment period closed on
April 23, a total of 620 comments were filed. The majority of comments received spoke directly to consumer needs and concerns, some citing CRL research. Speaking on behalf of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Wade Henderson and Nancy Zirkin wrote in part, “Regardless of the precise source of payday loans, their effects are the same. They come with triple digit interest rates. Communities and consumers are targeted, rather than served. According to a new Nielsen study, “Top U.S. Web Brands and News Websites,” nearly 212 million of us were surfing the net in some shape, form or fashion in May this year – a little over 276 million of us are estimated to have internet access. Like Yolanda Adam’s lyrics: “I don’t care how you get here, just get here when you can,” – Americans take various avenues – mobile internet, computer or tablet — to visit the websites we love. We spend, on average, a whopping 29 hours online per person a month. For a 30-day month this works out to be a little under an hour a day. And you know how quickly time flies when you’re “surfing” the web. (Wouldn’t it be great if the same could be said about working out and we committed ourselves to exercising that much each month?! I almost passed out this morning doing walking lunges and realized I had only been at it for 45 SECONDS)! But, I digress. We loved Google the most, as it remained the champion of web brands visited in the United
States, with 173 million unique visitors (“unique” is digital-speak, meaning the number of visitors counted once to a website). Facebook came in second with close to 152 million unique visitors. Rounding out the top five brands were Yahoo! (almost 143 million), YouTube (127.5 million) and MSN/WindowsLive/Bing (almost 127 million). Here’s a complete U.S. picture for May 2012: • The average person made 64 website visits/sessions. • 97 domains were visited per person. • There were 2,716 web page views per person. • Each web page was viewed an average of 1 minute and 5 seconds. • Online time per person was 29 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds for the month. • 211,985,000 people went online. • 276,550,209 people had internet access. Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t intentionally set out to view 2,716 web pages. Does anyone? You just get caught up with it, right? You start out trying to find a recipe or news recap or gossip tidbit and the next thing you

Interestingly, the popularity ranking of a website does not always correspond with the amount of time spent there. Take a look: 1. More than 62 million unique U.S. visitors visited Yahoo! – ABC News. Average time spent per person was 17 minutes, 56 seconds. 2. CNN Digital Network followed with 39.6 million, but people spent on average more time here, about 35 minutes per person, and this site had the most page views (1.6 billion). 3. HPMG News (formerly AOL News brands), had more than 33 million visitors. Average visit: 16 minutes, 17 seconds.

Eleven Youth-run programs receive grants CAP’s Youth As Resources Grants Funded by McCormick Tribune Foundation Eleven youth-run programs received grants ranging from $650 to $2,000 from the Chicago Area Project’s Youth As Resources Program during a gala ceremony on June 30, 2012 at the Chicago Area Project (CAP) office, 55 E. Jackson in Chicago. The grants are funded by the McCormick Tribune Foundation. The grant monies awarded are $17,000. Youth As Resources (YAR) challenges youth to identify community needs and design projects that use their skills, creativity and energy to help others in the community. YAR at the Chicago Area Project’s commitment to the importance of youth voices is reflected in the composition of the YAR
governing board, which is largely made of youth between the ages of 14-25. The YAR grant decisions were made by the governing board. Youth and adult board members work in partnership to make all funding decisions. The grant program is designed to help fund groups or organizations working with youth as leaders and decision makers. The projects partner youth and adults working together to creatively solve a community issue or need. The NEW Four-One-One By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor CONDOLENCES: Maria Cole, mother of Grammy Award-winner Natalie Cole died last week in Boca Raton, Florida. Mrs. Cole, a jazz singer who performed with Count Basie and Duke Ellington in the 1940's and who was married to Nat King Cole for 17 years until his death in 1965 was 89 years of age. Mrs. Cole grew up in North Carolina, then left college in Boston to pursue a career as a jazz singer. She moved to New York and joined Benny Carter's band. In addition, she performed with Count Basie and Fletcher Henderson before Ellington heard a recording of her in the mid-1940's and hired her as a vocalist for his band The Duke Ellington Orchestra. In 1946, she began appearing as a solo act at Club Zanzibar in Harlem, where she opened for The Mills Brothers. One night, the Nat King Cole Trio was "filling-in" for The Mills Brothers. As Mr. Cole stood backstage and watched Maria perform he was smitten. He divorced his first wife, Nadine, and Maria Cole they were married in 1948 by Congressman Adam Clayton Powell at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City's Harlem. “Nat wanted to improve himself,” Mrs. Cole told The Boston Globe in 1989. “I wanted to help him improve. What he needed, I had. What I needed, he had. That's why our marriage worked.” Maria Cole placed her career on hold to raise their five children (Natalie, Carol (Cookie), Nat (Kelly), and twins, Casey and Timolin) and travel with her husband as his career flourished. His string of hits included “Unforgettable,” “Candy” and “Mona Lisa,” and he became the first Black host of a national variety show on television, “The Nat King Cole Show,” which ran from 1956-1957. While on tour they risked and sometimes encountered racial violence in the “Jim Crow” South; and Mr. Cole was even attacked onstage in Alabama in 1956. Before Nat King Cole died of lung cancer at age 45, Mrs. Cole had returned to singing and recording with her husband at Capitol Records. Her best known solo album was “Love Is A Special Feeling,” which was released in 1966. Maria Frances Hawkins was born in Boston on August 1, 1922. Her father Mingo Hawkins, was a postal worker and her mother Caro Saunders Hawkins, died in childbirth when Maria was two years of age. Maria and her sister Charlotte were sent to North Carolina to live with their Aunt, Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, who founded the Palmer Memorial Institute, a prestigious Black preparatory school near Greensboro. She graduated from the Institute in 1938. Ms. Hawkins returned to Boston to attend a clerical college but began working with a jazz orchestra by night and soon dropped out to pursue her love of music in New York, much to the chagrin of her family, who thought jazz was an inappropriate vocation for a “proper” young lady. In 1943, she married Spurgeon Ellington (no relation to Duke Ellington), a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the all-Black unit of the Army Air Corps in World War II. He died during a training flight. After Nat King Cole’s death, Mrs. Cole continued to record and perform, once on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” She also was the host of a talk show in Chicago and Los Angeles. A subsequent marriage ended in divorce. In addition to her surviving children, Natalie, Casey and Timolin, Maria Cole is survived by her sister Charlotte and six grandchildren. Private services will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2012, in Glendale, California.

ABC 7 Chicago presents a special edition of “Heart & Soul” ABC 7’s Charles Thomas and Evelyn Holmes will host the next installment of HEART & SOUL, a series of specials that tap into Chicago’s vibrant African American community; airing Saturday, July 21 at 6:00 pm. Leah Hope and Hosea Sanders also contribute reports to this week’s episode. An encore presentation will air Saturday, August 11 at 4:30 p.m. on ABC 7. HEART & SOUL is the winner of the 2012 Illinois Broadcasters Association’s “Best Public Affairs Program” award. HEART & SOUL spotlights writer and DePaul University Alum Paul Oakley Stovall. Stovall is currently working with renowned Actress Phylicia Rashad of ‘The Cosby Show’ in a new play titled “Immediate Family,” currently in production at the Goodman Theater. Liberty Baptist Choir will use gospel to fight crime The Liberty Baptist Church plans to use its choir to address a number of negatives in our community – faithlessness, economic and educational disparity, as well as crime. The first salvo will be the “All Faith No Fear” concert July 22 at the church, 4849 S. King Drive, which will feature contemporary and traditional gospel beginning at 3 p.m.

Charlie Wilson brings prostate cancer message to Trinity raise awareness about prostate cancer among African American men. The disease is most prevalent among African American men, who also die more frequently from the disease.
Grammy nominee Charlie Wilson, a prostate cancer survivor will share his story about beating the disease when he joins Andrea King Collier author of “The Black Woman’s Guide to Black Men’s Health” July 28 at Trinity United Church of Christ.

Bethel AME’s 150th anniversary features historian Tim Black to Chicago in 1919. He and his siblings were raised in what then was referred to as the city’s Black Belt – a stretch on the South Side running from Cermak Road to 31st Street along State Street. The DuSable High School graduate was classmates of Jazz legend Nat King Cole and Johnson Publishing Co. founder, John H. Johnson.
