Obama stumps CSU for Quinn Quinn stepped in and fixed it within two weeks. When CSU was going through the exact same situation, he let it linger for months. So, there is not a love on this campus for Quinn, but people adore Obama, so this visit should be interesting.” The Crusader spoke with alumni on Wednesday who expressed they are excited about the President’s trip. Shirley Johnson said Obama’s trip to CSU will shed some positive light on the school and AfricanAmerican higher education, in general. “I think whenever the President of the

By J. Coyden Palmer At press time, the Crusader has learned that President Barack Obama will be holding a campaign rally for Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Chicago State University (CSU), 9501 S. King Drive. Details of the President’s visit have not been officially released, but several sources at CSU confirmed Obama will be visiting the South Side university. Obama’s last visit to the school was in 2006 during his U.S. senatorial campaign. Facing some harsh criticism from many in the Black community about not being seen enough in the community during his administration, Obama’s visit could also be seen as trying to counter moves by Republicans Bruce Rauner and Jim Oberweis,

who have interloped into the Black community seeking votes. Last month, it was announced that Chicago State had been eliminated from the list of final sites bidding for the Obama Presidential Library, which would have been a major coup for the school that still struggles to project a positive image. CSU does not even have a school newspaper, which means students do not have a voice in what is going on at the school. The university has also been facing a bitter rela-

tionship with many tenured professors over the leadership style of Dr. Wayne Watson, CSU’s president, who is close to Gov. Quinn. “This is an attempt by Watson to help out his buddy Quinn,” said a source, who did not want to be named. “Quinn has done a lot to help Watson by giving him a handpicked trustee board, loaded with people loyal to Watson. And, people forget when U of I in Champaign had problems with their board members a few years ago,

Senator Collins announces $21.5 million METRA Project State Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins (DChicago 16th) stood with Governor Pat Quinn and other high-ranking officials on Saturday to announce the building of a new South Side Metra stop on the Rock Island Line. This project is the culmination of a 5-year effort in which Senator Collins lobbied, fought and advocated for the $21.5 million in state capital funds. “The people of Auburn Gresham and adjoining communities deserve this opportunity; the opportunity for job creation, community engagement and economic development,” said Collins. Located on 79th Street, the Auburn Park station will connect Metra’s Rock Island Line to the busy 79th Street bus route. The 79th Street bus line is the city’s busiest, and the project will finally connect this vital transit artery via Metra to points north, south and southwest. “The Auburn Park Metra station will be more than an added convenience to com-

muters. This station holds the promise of economic rebirth for this area and it is a crucial step in the direction of equalizing infrastructure investment across all our communities,” said Collins. Construction of the station is expected to begin in the spring of 2015. Metra’s Rock Island District Line extends from LaSalle Street in Chicago to Joliet. “Access to transit and economic development are two of the catalysts needed for continued recovery in the neighborhoods I represent,” Collins said. “It is always an honor to serve as a voice for my communities, and I have high hopes for this exciting investment we have secured.”

GOVERNOR QUINN and Senator Jacqueline “Jacqui” Collins recently announced new Auburn Park METRA Station and were joined by Congressman Bobby Rush (D1), Alderman Latasha Thomas (17th Ward), Rev. Michael L. Pfleger and other community and civic leaders.

Drug rehab facility rejected by parents and residents By Wendell Hutson This weekend, residents and Henderson Elementary School parents will meet to discuss the latest group of ex-offenders set to move into a nearby drug rehab housing facility next month. Southwood Interventions, 5701 S. Wood St., is a substance abuse treatment center and operated by the Geo Group, Inc., a Floridabased company that provides correctional and detention management and community re-entry services. At a local school council meeting this week at Henderson, parents complained about the lack of communication the school has received from the facility. “We [parents] have no idea what kind of ex-offenders will be staying there. We don’t know if they are convicted rapists or what,” said Turkessa Cleaves, chairman of the local school council. “As a parent, I would feel more at ease if I knew this information.” David Johnson, clinical director for Southwood Interventions, declined comment. Cleaves added that facilities that cater to ex-offenders should not be located near schools. “Ex-offenders convicted of a sex crime cannot live within a certain feet of schools or parks, and that law should also apply to these [drug] places,” said Cleaves, 35, who has five children at Henderson. Some parents said while they un-

derstand drug rehab programs are needed, they should be located in more remote areas and not in residential neighborhoods. “There are too many small children that walk past that place for it to be open,” said Willie Sprowles, 62, who has six grandchildren at Henderson. Alderman Toni Foulkes (15th)— whose ward includes the facility— stated that 72 ex-offenders are set to move into Southwood in November. “All of this came to my attention by someone else and not Southwood Interventions, and I have a problem with that. There was no community meeting to let residents know anything, and that was not right,” Foulkes said. “I am not against drug treatment centers, but what sense does it make to bring people who are trying to get off drugs into a community with a drug problem?” Foulkes said she met with Walter Carlson, executive director of Southwood Interventions, and he told her all ex-offenders would wear an ankle monitor. “The guy accused of raping a Chicago State University student (last month) was wearing an ankle bracelet, too. That goes to show that a bracelet cannot prevent a person from committing a crime,” added Foulkes. Carlson did not return calls seeking comment. Shaw urges Blacks and ‘fair-minded Whites’ to dump Judge Crane Says Howard Morgan case ‘straw that broke camel’s back’ By Chinta Strausberg First elected in 1996, the controversial Judge Clayton J. Crane has been endorsed by the Cook County Democratic Party, but mayoral hopeful Robert Shaw is urging African Americans and “fair-minded” White voters to dump the controversial judge, who is seeking retention on November 4. Shaw, who made his comments on Sunday during his WVON talk show, said Crane, who is a former Cook County assistant State’s Attorney, “should not be re-elected because he presided over the trial of Howard Morgan,” a Black former Chicago policeman and railroad detective for the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad, who was shot 28 times by four White Chicago policemen. But, the Cook County Democratic Party is way ahead of Shaw having already put out a large-sized, sample ballot approved by the Party, asking voters to Punch 226 to retain Judge Crane. However, Shaw is urging Blacks to Punch 227, which he says is a ‘no’ vote. “Judge Crane has a long history of 2

mistreating African Americans, and his handling of the Howard Morgan case is the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as Black people are concerned. I am urging Blacks and fairminded Whites to vote 227 by his name, which is a ‘no’ vote because he needs to be off that bench,” Shaw said. Morgan, then 53, with no criminal history, was shot by Chicago policemen: John Wrigley, Eric White, Timothy Finley, and Nicolas Olsen on February 21, 2005 when he report-

HOWARD MORGAN showing gunshot wonds. edly drove the wrong way down a one-way street near his home. The police shot Morgan 28 times—mostly in his back—claiming he fired first; a charge Morgan and a lone eyewitness deny. Morgan survived and was charged with aggravated battery, attempted murder and discharging a firearm. A jury acquitted Morgan on the discharging of a firearm. In 2007, Morgan was found not guilty of battery or firing a gun, but

no verdict was returned on the attempted murder charge. So, the States Attorney’s office tried him a second time leading to his conviction in 2012, and ultimately, a 40-year prison sentence. While Judge Kathleen Mary Pantie had set Morgan’s bail at $2 million— despite Morgan’s lawyer, Sam Adam, Jr.’s request for a lower bond— it was Judge Crane who upheld the $2 million bond. Morgan’s 2007 trial where he was found guilty of attempted murder was an emotional one with Blacks accusing the cops of murder. Morgan’s wife, Rosalind, raised $12,000 towards his $2 million bond and received the balance of the $2 million from an anonymous person, however, Morgan returned to jail having had his bond revoked after the guilty verdict. Morgan swore he never shot at the police. David Protess, president of Chicago Innocence Project, is still asking a myriad of questions like: “Why wasn’t a gunshot residue test done of Morgan’s hands after the shooting? Why was Morgan’s car destroyed before forensic testing could be conducted, including of the bullets that pierced it? Why were only three bul-

lets preserved from the dozens of rounds fired as Morgan’s advocates claim?” “Under the circumstances, how do we know whether any of the remaining bullets that hit Morgan were fired from his own weapon by police?” asked Protess. Even more troubling for Protess and the Black community were the questions: “Why was Morgan shot 21 times while his back was turned? Weren’t seven direct hits to his front torso enough to subdue him? And, was race a factor in the shooting?” asked Protess. He added, “The first question goes to the issue of who is truly responsible for attempted murder…Morgan or the cops who repeatedly shot him?” Flipping the script, Protess asked, “Would the case have been handled differently if the four officers were Black West Siders, and the shooting victim was a White Gold Coast resident?” The key question remains: Did Howard Morgan receive due process of law, or was the fix already in? Many people continue to fight for his release. An online petition was created by Change.org. To sign, go to www.change.org/p/please-help-usfree-howard-morgan. www.chicagocrusader.com

Former Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner falsely accused Former Landlord with Multiple Building Code Citations Misuses Words of Horton’s Daughter to File Complaint and Have Horton Arrested for Verbal Assault Patricia Horton, former Water Reclamation District Commissioner and Vice Chairperson Affirmative Action & Legislation & Rules, was arrested and charged with assault after a landlord-tenant court proceeding at the Daley Center on Monday, September 29, however witnesses attest that she was falsely accused. Horton’s daughter stated that the former landlord involved in the case, overheard a comment she made to her mother and misused it to have Horton falsely arrested of verbal assault as a tactic to smear the name and reputation of her mother as she seeks to serve in another public office.

Patricia Horton “My mother has suffered continual harassment by her former landlord of more than two years,” said Horton’s daughter. Records show police reports filed for illegal entry

and theft, in addition to citations issued for multiple building code violations to the landlord, while Horton and her daughter lived in the property, rented between 2010 through 2012 (when they vacated the premises). “This man’s antagonism has been so upsetting that I spoke in her defense,” the daughter continued. “He was obviously disgruntled because the judge dismissed several of the allegations he had made against my mother. I said to her ‘I should slap him’ and he must have overheard my comment. My mother told me at the time I was wrong to say those words, and I’m so sorry that he ultimately used what I said as ammunition to cause her to be arrested and charged falsely. My mother only spoke to try and calm me down. She has always been there for me, even while serving over the past 25 years as a community leader who has been on the front-

Thanks to this lottery prize, I can make a donation to support the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease,” said the Blue Island resident when he presented his $1 million winning $300,000,000 Cash Spectacular lottery ticket at the Illinois Lottery Prize Center in Chicago. Crosby bought his winning $300,000,000 Cash Spectacular ticket at Ultra Foods, 13180 Cicero Avenue in Crestwood. He was at home when he used a quarter to scratch it. Initially, Crosby thought it was a $1,000 prize. It wasn’t until he was at the Lottery Prize Center that he found out he had won a million dollars. When asked about additional plans for the windfall, the lucky winner said, “I am happy this prize will also allow me to help my four brothers and sisters with things that they need. She stated, “I have faith in the judicial system that the truth will prevail, my innocence will be proven, and I will be completely exonerated of this concocted charge of assault,” said Horton. “I now understand even more clearly how a person can be wrongfully ac-

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL LESSONS FROM EBOLA

A popular talk show host on radio station WVON AM 1690, Salim Muwakkil, has pinpointed a dubious benefit of the Ebola Crisis. He wrote: “... the bright side of the Ebola eruption may be the realization that equal access to comprehensive health care is justified by its collective benefit.” This is an evident truth, and one that could become more apparent during the course of the Ebola epidemic. For years, advocates of national or universal health care have been trumpeting the need for all to have access to healthcare because, if everyone does not, the consequences will impact everyone. Immigrants, for example, who contract a contagious disease might spread it if they do not have access to care. Ebola is a frightening malady, and it has suspicious origins. It’s interesting how the African continent has been painted as a poster child for everything bad. AIDS, and most recently, Ebola are putting the finishing touches on this image. Now, as a result of its seeming African genesis, people in other parts of the world are in near panic and think that they can erect artificial barriers to contain this scourge. They are deluded. At least 7 airports around the globe are starting to screen travelers from Africa for the Ebola virus. This creates a very troubling scenario; Africa will sink deeper into economic marginalization as a result, since trade in that part of the world will possibly be radically diminished because of a fear of this dreaded scourge. If viewed more closely, screening only for African countries is a strategy fraught with folly - there are no invisible fences that will keep this disease contained in one geographic region! The fact that there has already been a case of transmission in the United States and an Ebola victim in Spain attests to this notion. So to screen for people only from Africa is a weak strategy bound to be met with defeat. Regarding the suspicious origins of Ebola in Africa, an article on Snopes.com, reveals that the CDC patented a strain of Ebola in 2010, Patent No. CA2741523A1. An abstract for that patent reads: “The invention provides the isolated human Ebola (hEbola) viruses denoted as Bundibugyo (EboBun) deposited with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”; Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America) on November 26, 2007 and accorded an accession number 200706291.” Snopes, however, says it is false that “The CDC created Ebola and obtained a patent for it to restrict or profit from the development of a vaccine.” Interesting. The fact is that the virus exists, and that the CDC holds a patent on it, and that its recent point of origin is Africa. Not the U.S., not Europe, not China or Japan, but Africa. Whatever the case, the spread of this disease will teach humankind a lesson before it is defeated, and that lesson is that we all occupy this little blue-green globe together. What happens in one part of the world has the capacity to impact the rest of the world. This outbreak will demonstrate that all geographic boundaries are artificial, political constructs which Ebola is not bound to honor. The ultimate lesson that this disease will teach is that it will take all of us to rally our forces in an attempt to defeat it. On the dark side, the result could be what conspiracy theorists have been saying all along, that this is just another ploy for the covert “powers-that-be” to enact martial law under the guise of Ebola containment so that they can control a growing populace. Let’s hope this is not true. But on the positive side, it could bring people, especially Black people, closer together in order to defeat a common enemy. A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Learn about judges before you vote Dear Editor: On Tuesday, November 4, Illinois voters will have a chance to cast their ballots in the general election. In addition to voting for candidates for national and statewide offices, they will have a chance to vote for judges. Learning about the judicial candidates can be difficult, and all too frequently, voters choose to skip voting for these candidates rather than take the time to learn about them. That’s unfortunate because judges have a huge impact on our lives. They strive to ensure that the law is fairly imposed, deciding for example who will have custody of your children or whether to punish someone who is convicted of a crime. The best judges are impartial, committed to public service, nonpartisan, empathetic, fair and extremely knowledgeable about the law. Thankfully, there are ways to learn about judges running for election and retention. Bar association evaluations and newspaper endorsements are reliable, independent and relevant sources of information about the candidates’ qualifications. All candidates for Illinois judicial offices who won in the March 18 primary election have been rated by Illinois State

Bar Association evaluations committees, or in a poll of lawyers conducted by the ISBA. Results are available at www.isba.org/judicialevaluations. In Cook County, an ISBA Judicial Evaluations Committee used the results of a questionnaire, background investigations, and in-person interviews to rate candidates for judicial offices. Candidates for the Appellate and Supreme Court outside Cook County were also evaluated using this process. We urge everyone to review the ratings, then vote for judicial candidates who are truly the most qualified. Download the results and take them into the voting booth with you. Rest assured that the ratings provide an excellent guide. Richard D. Felice President Illinois State Bar Association

COMMENTARY

What if the CBC was Pro-Business? Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford The Congressional Black Caucus in its short history has basically been a bastion of progressive or liberal thinkers. Of the 42 members who can vote their record collectively has been on a pro-socialistic direction. All of them are a part of the Democratic Party and will march with President Obama’s agenda regardless of what harm it will do to Black Americans. The Republican Party has one person, Senator Tim Scott (SC). Senator Scott refuses to join the CBC. Two Congresspersons, Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC) and Donna Christensen (VI) are not allowed to vote. Recently, the Small Business Entrepreneurs Council published their annual “Vote Ratings.” The ratings are based on the votes each member made on bills concerning pro-business. This year there have been 20 such bills and the scores range from 0 percent to 100 percent. I had assumed that hardly any of the CBC members would score 100 percent but there would be some with relative high percentages. Senator Tim Scott received a rating of 100 percent. In contrast, Senator Corey

Harry C. Alford Booker (NJ) received a rating of 0 percent. The highest score received by a CBC member is Congressperson Sanford Bishop (GA) at 67 percent. No other CBC member received a rating higher than 35 percent. This is pretty one sided and it makes them quite predictable. We have CBC members with MBA degrees who vote anti–business. It is stunning. You cannot really be a good negotiator if your decisions are going to be predictable. Your opponent has a great advantage in knowing how you are going to act. That is a big problem with Black America. A vast

majority of us go in the same direction – Democrat. Hispanics and Asians on the other hand will vote on the issues not on the party. Consequently over the years they traditionally get far more consideration from their elected officials. That means they receive better representation as their elected officials know they can be fired. For the most part our Black congresspersons are in “safe” districts and once they are elected they will stay there until something unexpected happens. Death, indictment, scandal, etc. are the things that usually replace them not another candidate. There have been a few examples to the contrary like when Congressperson Artur Davis knocked Earl Hilliard from his Alabama seat. From that point on the Democratic Party went after him. As a people Black Americans should be demanding much more. We get very little for supporting someone without expecting them to work hard and bring home some results. Our neighborhoods are blighted and it seems to get worse year after year. Our poverty levels are about the same as they were when the Democratic Party declared “War on Poverty” back in the

early 1960’s. Our healthcare remains deplorable and our educational levels are far less than other segments of our nation’s population. Why do we take poor performance so lightly? Until we start voting out elected officials for nonperformance there will be no effective leadership representing us. If the CBC would become at least nonpredictable and start voting on legislation that would enhance business (jobs, health, wealth) our communities would begin changing. Imagine if our unemployment rates were just equal to the national average. Our quality of life would improve dramatically. I pray to see the day that some of the CBC would not follow the Democratic leadership on every issue whether it hurts us or not. There are some who do on a few issues but not nearly enough to make a difference. If it hurts us why do they go along with it? They are so loyal but are disrespected. I believe it is more than a coincidence that the wealthy members of Congress are White and the poorest members are Black. How do many of our White elected officials stay decades in office and be-

come multi-millionaires while their Black counterparts stay broke? Representing wealthy districts makes an elected official wealthy. Representing poverty keeps an elected official broke. The way out of this is to economically empower a district which will make that official economically improve also. Instead of waging a “war on poverty” we need to wage a “love affair with wealth building.” Our preachers do it and it is with our money! There is hope. Recently, CBC member Bobby Rush (Chicago) wrote a pro-business bill. He wrote it and immediately got sponsorship from a noticeable number of Republican members, along with Democrats to co-sponsor the bill. He is looking like a hero and hopefully this could start a new movement by the rest of the CBC. It is time for a positive change. Maybe, just maybe it can start on Capitol Hill and catch on throughout our great nation. Black America would change for the better. Republicans Still Earn ‘F’ on Civil Rights By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The Leadership Conference of Civil Rights (LCCR), a coalition of more than 200 human rights groups, has issued a new congressional report card that reaches the same conclusion that similar analyses by the NAACP has reached in recent years: When it comes to issues important to the civil rights community, every Republican in the House and Senate gets an ‘F.’ The LCCR graded each federal lawmaker on a points system and no Republican supported key civil rights measures more than 45 percent of the time. Even grading on a generous academic curve that translates to a clear F. The bills members of Congress were graded on included a Fair Housing Amendment, workforce reinvestment, financial reform, gender equality, child tax credit extension. House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and the lone Black senator, Tim Scott (R-S.C.) each earned a zero. Presumptive GOP presidential candidates Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) scored zero and 5 percent, respectively. In a warmup to his presidential run, Rand Paul has been criticizing his own party for not making www.chicagocrusader.com

overtures to Black voters. In an interview with CNN last week, he said, “I think in the Republican Party, the biggest mistake we’ve made in the last several decades is we haven’t gone into the AfricanAmerican community, into the NAACP and say you know what, we are concerned about what’s going on in your cities and we have plans. They may be different than the Democrats, but we do have plans and we do want to help.” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has also said the GOP plans to actively compete for the Black vote. Speaking to the National Association of Black Journalists’ national convention in Boston last summer, he said: “We have become a national party that has decided it is okay to show up every four years, about five months before an election,” he said. “We’ve become a national party that’s really just a UHaul trailer of cash for a presidential nominee.” He said that had changed under his watch, noting that he had launched a “full-time engagement program” to attract African Americans, Latino and Asian voters. Priebus said he was also bringing more people of color into the party. He proclaimed, “We’re in this for the long haul. We’ve got to get this right.” But getting it right involves more

George E. Curry than invoking new language while continuing the same old patterns. And that’s exactly what Republicans are doing with the votes in Congress and their constant attacks on President Obama. Their best performers on civil rights voted wrong more than half of the time, according to the LCCR report card. Rep. Christopher Gibson (R-N.Y.) was the top rated Republican at 45 percent, followed by Senator Susan Collins of Maine with 43 percent. Most Republicans in Congress did far worse. In the Senate, 18 Republicans

scored zero: Sessions (Ala.); Boozman (Ark.); Rische (Idaho); Grassley (Iowa); Roberts (Kan.); McConnell and Paul (Kentucky); Blunt (Mo.); Johanns (Neb.); Inhofe (Okl.); Cornyn and Cruz (Texas); Scott, the only African American senator, (S.C.); Thune (S.D.); Cornyn and Cruz (Texas); Lee (Utah); Johnson (Wis.) and Barrasso and Enzi (Wyoming). The only Democrat graded an F was John Kerry, who didn’t complete his term because he resigned Jan. 13 to join the Obama administration as Secretary of State. In the House, 119 of 233 Republicans earned zeros. Another 57 earned only 5 points, meaning 176 of 233 Republicans scored 5 percent or lower. Still others, such as John McCain earned only 20 percent. By contrast, the entire congressional delegations of Obama’s native Hawaii, Vermont, Massachusetts (excluding John Kerry, who resigned), and Rhode Island each earned 100. Nine of Maryland’s 10-member delegation earned 100. Though GOP leaders are using, in the words of George W. Bush, kinder, gentler language, they remain downright hostile to civil rights. It hasn’t always been this way. In the 1960s, for example, civil rights was a bipartisan issue. In fact, if you look at the proportion of each

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

major party voting for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a larger percentage of Republicans voted for the landmark measure than Democrats. Unlike today, Black Republicans, including Secretary of Transportation Bill Coleman and Assistant Secretary of Labor Arthur Fletcher, championed civil rights. Today, however, Blacks like Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas stand against everything Bill Coleman and Art Fletcher stood for. Also, White moderates have been chased out of the party in deference to right-wing Tea Party zealots. Consequently, at a time the GOP was poised to become the dominant party, its move to the far right has made it impossible for them to reach that goal in an increasingly diverse America. Republicans can run for the White House in 2016, but they can’t run away from the Republican record on civil rights. George E. COMMENTARY

REMEMBERING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF DR. BOBBY WRIGHT (Dr. Conrad Worrill, Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-4930900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill

On April 6, 1982, the worldwide Black Liberation Movement lost one of its most important freedom fighters. Dr. Bobby E. Wright died on this day at Rush Presbyterian Hospital after a long illness at the age of forty-eight. During the mid 1960s, Dr. Wright worked as a truant officer in the Chicago Public School system. Most of the Black teachers in the Chicago public schools, prior to 1970, were hired in the category called FTBS (Full Time Basil Substitute). Very few Black teachers were hired on a regularly certified basis due to the racism in the hiring practices of the Chicago Board of Education. Dr. Wright organized and led a group called the Black Teachers Caucus which challenged this racist policy. They mobilized thousands of Black teachers to take a stand against the board’s racist hiring and promotional policies. Eventually, the Chicago Board of Education was forced to change their hiring policies because of the movement led by Dr. Wright and

the Black Teachers Caucus. Dr. Wright was a fearless champion of the causes of Black people worldwide. He was a genuine uncompromising freedom fighter who took up the most unpopular issues which affected Black people. As a trained clinical psychologist, receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1972, he went on to become the executive director of the Garfield Park Comprehensive Mental Health Center on Chicago’s West Side. This is the largest Black mental health facility of its kind in the nation and has now been renamed the Bobby E. Wright Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center Incorporated. Dr. Wright always used his skills and expertise to help Black people. He was a tireless worker in the cause of Black liberation and independence. Dr. Wright was a scholar, teacher, lecturer, organizer, writer, and computer expert, always giving and sharing with his community. Perhaps the most important of Dr. Wright’s written

works is his article, “The Psychopathic Racial Personality,” written in the fall issue of the Black Books Bulletin in 1974. Among his many professional, civic associations, movements, activities and memberships were the Association of Black Psychologists, National Alliance of Black School Educators, Communiversity, National Black United Front (NBUF), Temple of the African Community of Chicago (TACC) and the Political Action Conference of Illinois. Dr. Wright also served on the Science and Technology commission of the Sixth Pan African Conference in Tanzania in 1974. The spirit and memory of Dr. Bobby E. Wright lives on. Although he did not physically participate in the successful election of Chicago’s first Black mayor, he helped lay the foundation for this historic event through his many political activities. If Bobby were here today, he would be helping us in rebuilding unity in the Black Movement to

address the major challenges facing African people in this country and worldwide. He would be urging all the streams of our movement to unite. And here in Chicago, he would be encouraging the Black community to come together to resist the imposition of outside forces of people who are making decisions about school closings and don’t have children in inner city schools. The onslaught of school closings will have a devastating impact on the Black community in Chicago. On a special note, Bobby would be raising questions of the numerous schools we fought to be named in honor of Black heroes that are on the school closing list. Bobby Wright, if he were here, would be urging us to revive and re-energize our movement. As Bobby always said, “A Luta Continua Lasima Tushinde Mblishaka - The struggle will continue and we shall conquer without a doubt.”

What If The Ebola Epidemic Hit France? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist When it comes to matters of trade and economics, experts are eager to speak of “globalization.” People are keen to talk about the dissolution of borders and the many ways that countries work together across the globe. At least part of every Apple computer you purchased was manufactured or assembled in Ireland. Many call centers are located in the Caribbean and India. U.S. companies subcontract these jobs to other countries because hourly wages are lower in those countries than in the U.S. To be sure, this economic globalization does not go well with some. Why can’t these jobs stay in the U.S.? If some in Congress have their way, companies who send jobs abroad may face higher taxes or fewer incentives from those that keep their jobs at home. The fluid nature of borders allows for copyright infringment. Some companies have taken their complaints to world judicial bodies, with mixed results. The World Court and others are not intimidated by the United States. Now Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian national who traveled to Dallas to see his fiance and his son, has died. His death raises lots of questions about the world response to Ebola, especially on the the African continent. More than 7,400 6

people have been diagnosed with the Ebola virus, and nearly half have died from it. But when Duncan went to the hospital on September 25, he told staff he had recently been living in Liberia and complained of the flu-like symptoms that can also signal Ebola. Ebola sufferers experience fever, headaches, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, and unexplained bleeding. It can only be transmitted through exposure to the bodily fluids of an Ebola-infected person. Doctors sent him home with antibiotics. When he returned to the hospital on September 28, he was admitted and then quarantined. Most of the Ebola cases are in West Africa, and Liberia has the greatest number of any country; more than half of those diagnosed in Liberia have died. Guinea has the highest survival rate, but a third fewer cases than Liberia which of course has the lowest survival rate in Africa. The other African countries, including Nigeria and Senegal, have few diagnoses, But Nigeria, with just 20 cases, has a survival rate of 40 percent. There are some reports that the virus has spread to Senegal. Among Western countries, Spain and the U.S. each had one case as of October 3. There may be unreported cases in other states, Canada and other Western countries. In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2014

Dr. Julianne Malveaux guidelines to health care workers to prevent them from catching the virus. In Liberia and other West African countries, health care systems are inadequate and without a sufficient number of beds to accommodate those with Ebola. To avoid infecting others, many choose, and others are forced, to lie on the street, ready and waiting to die. The health care system is so broken in Liberia because there are no resources. The World Bank and the International Development Agency are able to make loans, with the IDA offering loans at favorable terms. But too many African countries have to choose between loan repayment and

development. When the choice is loan repayment, schools and hospitals are the most affected. Clearly these broken health care systems in West Africa have world impact. Just as Thomas Eric Duncan traveled from Liberia to the United States, others might come from Nigeria or Sierra Leone. The “temperature check” at airports may be less than efficient, and in our global world the Ebola virus can be transported anywhere. Many see Ebola as an “African disease,” just as they once saw HIV/AIDS as a “gay disease.” Only when these diseases began to affect a different demographic did that legislature direct funds to those organizing HIV awareness. Should our legislators not do the same thing for Ebola? What if the Ebola virus turned up in France and people were dying? Well, France is so structurally differ-

ent that there would likely be enough beds to manage the Ebolainfected (just as the U.S. does). There might be a more equitable distribution (or might not), and the country might have more than a scant two doses of an experimental medicine to cure Ebola. The Ebola epidemic began in February or March of this year, yet there was unreadiness when the virus came to the U.S. If we (the U.S.) would have looked at the virus as more than an “African Disease” seperated by several miles and oceans and; therefore, not our concern or priority, perhaps a man’s life could have been saved. Maybe we would have been better prepared for the threat when it came “home.” Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist based in Washington, DC

People are puzzled still at how this big ole’ healthy gal wound up in a hospital with emergency surgery just when folk say her mayoral campaign was about to get off the ground. Ima rolled by her campaign office on 43rd street and peeked in de window. Looked like people was happy and grinning and dreaming about what job dey was gone have once Lewis became mayor. The timing of her illness is a surprise blessing to De Tiny Emperor who must have been twerkin’ all day and night after learning his arch enemy done suddenly turned sick. We hopes nothing comes out that there was some funny business a la Harold Washington with this woman.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) recovery advice for parents who find themselves in this difficult situation. When parents are involved, students achieve more academically, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnic/racial background, or the parents’ education level. Your involvement is the most critical piece and the first step toward success. Understand the contributing factors. Oftentimes there are multiple factors that have contributed to your child’s decision to drop out of school. Getting to the root of these factors is a necessary initial part of the process and a vital step toward finding a solution. I encourage parents to take an honest and objective look at the situation at home and at school. Make a list of all of the issues that might be creating a barrier to your child’s success; and once this is complete, repeat the process together with your child. Creating an open dialogue while reiterating your desire to see your child succeed is extremely important. There is a direct relationship between family involvement and school completion; and, the extent to which a family encourages learning is often said to be the most accurate predictor of future success. Convey the consequences. Because high school completion has

become a basic prerequisite for many entry-level jobs, as well as higher education, the economic consequences of leaving high school without a diploma are severe. High school dropouts experience higher rates of unemployment, higher rates of incarceration and a higher rate of dependence on social services. Due to lower levels of income and lower levels of job security, high school dropouts face poorer health outcomes and are less likely to receive job-based health insurance. The facts surrounding the consequences of dropping out of school speak to the devastating reality with little additional elaboration needed. The information is readily available and real life examples are often not beyond reach. The key for parents is to ensure that your child fully understands the heightened level of hardship with which they will be faced throughout his or her life. Weigh all of the options. When discussing re-enrolling in school, it is very important for parents and students to look at all of the available options. Commonly, students will not want to return to the school from which they have dropped out, and the amount of time needed to catch-up in a traditional school can be a big deterrent. Alternative schools can provide a variety of op-

tions that lead to graduation, through programs that pay special attention to the student’s individual social needs and academic requirements for a high school diploma. For the past year, I have served as the principal of Ombudsman Chicago, a tuition free program that caters to students who have fallen behind or dropped out of school. By offering a flexible schedule of morning or afternoon classes and combining online coursework with personal support and face to face instruction we have seen great success in getting our students back ontrack to earning a diploma. Focus on the future after high school. High school is not the end of the road. Help to emphasize the next chapter of life after high school by working with your child identify postsecondary life goals. List out the steps that will need to be taken, create an action plan and concentrate on these goals instead of focusing on why your child has been previously unsuccessful in school. Most of all, remain positive through this journey and know that there are resources available to help guide along the way. Dr. Chaun Johnson, Senior Principal Ombudsman Chicago

EDUCATION

Thornton Township hosts: youth summer job readiness program dinner Thornton Township held its first annual awards ceremony for its Youth Summer Job Readiness Program, recently. Township Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli addressed the huge audience of youths, parents, and seniors. More than 200 youth were presented with certificates for community service. Supervisor Zuccarelli stated, “We thought it was important to bring the families and youth that worked for us together, it is important that we invest in our young people and families in our community. There are more good young people than bad ones and we want to honor them.” Stanley Brown, Director of the Youth Summer Job Readiness Program said, “It is a much needed program. They had a chance to be responsible, accountable, and learn how to manage a job. Moreover, Brown says, “The program has been in existence for the past 10 years.” Brown explains the program uses lawn care services throughout Thornton Township to service lawns for seniors and others.

“The program emphasizes discipline and helps develop life skills leading to college graduation, and acquiring jobs,” said Brown. Jacoby Mattison, High School Senior said, “I learned how to deal with people. The program is a good chance for the high risk youth to be off the streets and to be doing something with their life.” Several students talked about skills they gained from the program. Theresa Ballard, High School Senior stated, “I gained leadership, how to overcome fear.” First year college student Tony Miles commented on the program, “The counselors were nice and motivational. The program teaches you responsibilities and to take action for yourself. Also, we learned to take a leadership role in life and how to play a positive role in the society.”

MORE THAN 200 youth were presented certificates for community service recently at Thornton Township’s Youth Summer Job Readiness program dinner. The youth are joined by Township Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli and Stanley Brown, Director of the program.

Supervisor Zuccarelli announced the creation of a new Youth Incentive College Course Waiver Program, offered by Thornton Township at South Suburban

College. The Youth Incentive College Course Waiver is designed to defray the cost of educational expenses incurred by students.

Congressman Robin Kelly donates books to Marian Catholic High School Congresswoman Robin Kelly personally delivered nearly 150 books to Marian Catholic High School as part of the Library of Congress Surplus Book Program. “Books open young minds to new worlds and possibilities,” Congresswoman Kelly said. “A book we donated may be the reason a student chooses a certain career or decides to pursue a new in-

terest. It’s also gratifying to interact with the students because they’re always curious about careers in public service—which I try to encourage.” The Library of Congress routinely donates extra copies or surplus books to schools and nonprofits through Members of Congress. Congresswoman Kelly regularly contacts schools across

the 2nd Congressional District to introduce the program. Schools expressing an interest in the program receive age-appropriate books directly from the Library of Congress. For more information about the Library of Congress Surplus Book Program, please contact Rep. Kelly’s office at (708) 679-0078.

First, an exhibition titled The XRay Series will be on display October 21 through a closing reception with artist Michael Hopkins on November 17 from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Hopkins has exhibited throughout the United States, in Canada and Europe. He has art in numerous museum permanent collections including The Art Institute of Chicago. The X-Ray Series was completed between 2004 and 2007. The media is white ink on slate comprised of slightly altered images of both human and animal X-rays. Twenty (20) pieces from The X-Ray Series will exhibit at SSC as part a larger collection on display internationally including The Progressive Art Collection, Mayfield Village, Ohio–rated as one of the best collections by Forbes Magazine, Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, Wisconsin, and permanent collections at The University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor Michigan and The Wellcome Trust Collection, London, England–Nobel Peace Prize winner James Watson spoke at the opening. “I was interested in The X-Ray Series at the beginning based on formal elements,” said Hopkins. “From there, I became intrigued by how looking at the human and animal skeletal system may evolve into other topics.” Additionally, Faint Perceptions is an exhibition by artist Connie Wolfe that will run October 27 through the closing reception on

November 20 from 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Three installations will be featured in the exhibit. Wolfe earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Kenosha, Wisconsin, and his Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Wolfe is inspired by the rich colors and textures in natural environments that typically go unnoticed in the everyday rituals of our society. “Most recently I have been making mixed-media installations that are pieces on their own, yet they become the inspiration for my twodimensional work,” said Wolfe. “This process simulates my experience to nature in that subtle differences in light, time of day, and vantage point of the installations are used as source material for my drawings, prints, and paintings. As a result, the subject of all of my work shares the hidden intricacies inherent in our environment.” The X-Ray Series can be viewed during gallery hours in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery on the 4th floor in the Art & Design hallway. Faint Perceptions will be exhibiting in the Lee Dulgar Gallery on the first floor near the college Atrium. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Fridays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2445 or visit www.ssc.edu/art. ‘Living Legends’ elegantly recognized at BUFI Gala The Black United Fund of Illinois, Inc. held their 14th Annual Living Legends/Passing the Torch© Awards Gala Saturday, October 4. “Living Legend” Illinois State Senator of the17th District, Donne Trotter, and entrepreneur, and top Allstate Insurance Agent, Louis Dodd, were among five honorees. A standing room only audience of achievers, philanthropists and community leaders looked on. PNC, Safe Speed and Triad Consulting Services were Gala sponsors. The event, held at the DuSable Museum of African American History, served to acknowledge decades of commitment, hard

work, milestones, hardships and victories each honoree encountered along the road to legendary achievement. Perhaps the highlight of the evening for each honoree was the actual passing of the Torch, from “Living Legend” to the torchbearers. In Senator Trotter’s case, the four torchbearers charged to continue the legacy are Illinois State Representative, 33rd District, Marcus C. Evans, Jr., Illinois State Representative Elgie R. John Moultrie says the jazz fest is an ideal way to bring crowds and business to what he calls the “crown jewel of Harbor County” during the off-season. “When things die down in fall and winter, businesses still have to stay open—and it can be a struggle,” he said. “I have always wanted to create a way to interject new business into the area during those times. So I put my urban planner hat on and created another great reason for tourists to visit the city and surrounding areas.” New Buffalo is located at the mouth of the Galien River on Michigan’s west coast, just north of the Indiana border. It is about a 90minute drive from Chicago, and the first stop for many visitors to Michigan entering from Indiana on eastbound Interstate 94. The stellar lineup for the weekend includes three groups Patrick Booth Trio, Chris Greene Quartet, the Hope College Jazz Arts Collective, saxophonists Darius Hampton and Marqueal Jordan, trumpeter Chris Lawrence and vocalists Kimmie Horn, Julia Huff and Dara Tucker. his financially struggling family out by committing armed robbery of a Bank of America branch of about $140,000.

The documentary is an intimate, in-your-face dramatization of events surrounding the robbery, with Monroe deciding to

make a documentary about the incident as a New York University film student. The audience gets to see the reaction of people who were inside the bank that day and with whom Monroe had become acquainted after his prison term who didn’t know anything about the robbery, and how they saw him after learning about his crime. “My memory took me back to that fateful day. I started to think about the innocent employees and customers inside the bank. I was compelled to find these people and apologize for my actions. I had hoped that my apology would bring some form of closure, but I quickly learned that closure is a construct. It doesn’t exist. Or does it? One moves on, but one never forgets,” says Monroe. This is a great documentary that still gives me pause and causes me to SMH (shake my head)!

Right now, one of the greatest documentaries of all time is only being shown in one theater in Chicago. I find this quite disturbing that the real story of the Great Muhammad Ali isn’t available for everyone to see all over the city. What’s the difference in this biopic of the living legend and the film “Ali” starring Will Smith? Ali is the star and we get to experience sides of him that we never knew. Ali kept reel-to-reel tape recordings of his conversations. Not to protect himself but for history. His children can now hear their father’s conversations that he had with them, which is so important now that Ali can’t speak due to Parkinson’s disease. Director Clare Lewins did a wonderful job in making this documentary feel not like a documentary but a conversation with Ali, his children, his ex-wife, his opponents, and his

fans. We are given the good deeds and the adultery, the deep love for his family and his fierceness in the ring. We get a better understanding for his conversion to Muslim and his refusal to be drafted into the armed forces during in the Vietnam War. There were so many things about this film that I enjoyed. Hearing from the fighters that he took down especially, brut fighter, George Foreman was touching and an awakening. There is so much love and respect given to Ali. Foreman says that getting beat by Ali changed his life for the better. Mike Tyson’s comments were heartfelt and passionate. You MUST take your family, SPEND THE MONEY and see I AM ALI at the theater. It will reawaken memories for some and introduce to others why Muhammad Ali is known simply as “The Greatest.”

Cristian Macelaru to conduct CSO upon its return home in November The Orchestra to begin fifth European tour with Riccardo Muti October 20 By Barbara Wright-Pryor Guest conductor Cristian Macelaru will lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in two concerts in November with violinist Elena Urioste as soloist on Friday, November 7, at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 8, at 8:00 p.m. The program will feature Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances Nos. 17-21 and Antonin Dvoák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor (“From the New World”). Restoration of IIT’s Carr Chapel celebrated with music of Brahms and Mozart CSO’s Kenneth Olsen and the Civitas Ensemble perform for supporters By Nancy Berman, guest columnist To celebrate the recent restoration of Carr Chapel located on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Mies van der Rohe’s only religious building, The Mies Society hosted a reception and concert October 1 featuring The Civitas Ensemble led by Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Assistant Principal Cellist, Kenneth Olsen, who with fellow members violinist Yuan-Qing Yu and Winston Choi, pianist, performed works by Brahms and Mozart. The Robert F. Carr Memorial Chapel of St. Savior was completed in 1952. The edifice is non-denominational but students often refer to the building as the “God Box.” The

Chapel hosts both religious and secular events including weekly services on Sundays, weddings, campus parties and even dances. The Mies society selected the Chapel as a renovation project because of its architectural significance. Unlike Mies’ other works in America, the walls are constructed of blonde bricks that are not merely decorative, but also support the small building. Said Mies, “The simple walls are intended to draw the eye upward, making the chapel a space for contemplation.” Among the guests attending the celebratory concert were Chicagoans Dirk Lohan, grandson of Mies, who gave the toast, Tom and Barbi Donnelly, Justine Jentes, Jan Jentes and John Anderson, president of IIT. From the north shore were Jane and Dan Deuble of Glenview, Chantal and William Shapiro of Wilmette and Alicia and Bernard Rosauer of Winnetka.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe These are Signs of the Time— are lyrics of a song on multiple award winner and recording artist, Yolanda Adams’, first solo project entitled “Signs of the Time.” As you know, I love music and this was another song that was love at first sound because of its powerful lyrics of truth. “Please do take heed—that you be not deceived—the devil is out and he’s trying to plead—people are looking for something to get into. They are fighting and they don’t know what to do. Earthquakes and rumors, people are looking for something to get into …they don’t know what to do. Seasons may change and there be nothing strange.” Some 30 years later, this song remains relevant. “Signs of the Time” are like revelations. Things we’ve heard, read about or listened to rapidly unfold before our very eyes, oftentimes sooner than later. What better reason or better time than now to “take heed-that you be not deceived…” Last week, we mentioned the days of “Yea and Nay” as the Winans singers admonished us

Effie Rolfe through song to: “remember when life was so simple, you did or you didn’t; you would or you wouldn’t; but it ain’t like that anymore.” Today our focus is on the days and times we are experiencing at this very moment—signs of the time. For several years, even ABC Nightline News incorporat-

ed a show called Signs of the Time. While I’m not sure of the show’s premise, they often featured things that were considered out of the norm. Out of the norm? Is this the beginning point or ending point? The world has changed so rapidly until now things that were once considered taboo are now considered the “new normal.” This term is indicative of same sex marriage that’s portrayed in the popular television show Modern Family. The pervading culture is such that whatever feels right is right and is totally acceptable. 60 minutes reported that Google and Apple are building devices that hold tons of information about their customers and subscribers. Apple’s new iPhone 6 only allows the owner to open the phone to access information. Not a bad idea if your android is accidentally stolen, but this is not so good for our law officials trying to track down a criminal, thus making it impossible to de-crack the phone’s code and detain the alleged fugitive. Unfortunately, this type of newly designed device is in mass distribution and all too com-

mon. Case in point: the perfect playground for criminals to literally get away with murder. Interestingly, How to Get Away with Murder is another television hit series developed by University Park south suburban native and top Executive Producer, Shonda Rhimes. The show stars Oscar winner, Viola Davis with exciting plots that have Twitter fans buzzing even more so than her previous hit show, Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy combined. The show actually gives insight on how to “get away with murder.” A great show, but not good for criminals in training already teetering with evil ploys in their periphery. However, kudos to my girl Shonda Rhimes, the fact that an African American woman controls primetime on network television is an amazing fete and another example of the “signs of the time.” There are so many things I could mention from buying free water, to celebrities and rich folk traveling to the moon for entertainment. As well as, parents not being able to spank children, tweens as young as 12 years old

are obsessed with plastic surgery; the hacking of retail chains and banks affecting millions of customers, all the way to a reality television series called Dating Naked. Primarily what comprises the signs of the time is there are no absolutes—anything goes. You really can learn how to get away with murder on television or learn that it’s ok to be comfortable with your body and go on a date—naked. Sometimes you have to wonder, “what is the world coming to?” Inevitably, as indicated in scripture these are the end times (Matthew 24:6-7). The new normal may look or feel ok, however, these express examples of our changing culture are nothing more than the “signs of our time.” Have you noticed any signs of the time…? Black Consumers still left behind in Recovering Mortgage Market By Charlene Crowell When it comes to assessing the nation’s housing industry, one key measure that all housing industry stakeholders take note of is the annual Home Mortgage Disclosure Act report, commonly referred to as HMDA. Nationwide, mortgage lenders are required to report a wealth of data on mortgage applications, originations and denials. These public data also include the racial composition

Charlene Crowell of these key metrics. For communities of color, it is particularly notable that the HMDA report quantifies by race and ethnicity mortgage lending and denials for both private loans, also referred to as ‘conventional’ loans and government-sponsored mortgages sometimes referred to as ‘non-conventional’ loans. For 2013, the most up-to-date report, the data clearly reveals that while conventional mortgage originations rose slightly from 2012 to 2013, nationwide Black consumers received only 2.3 percent or 36,903 loans. In 2012, the same data point was even smaller, with only 26,500 such loans. To add some context to this low number of private, conventional mortgages, consider that the Chicago suburb of Calumet City with a population of 37,240 is larger than the number of loans made to the nation’s Black homebuyers last year. Similarly, in refinance mortgage lending, Black borrowers received only 191,004 – only 4.4 percent of more than 4.3 million last year. This comparatively low level of lending continues a trend that began following the nation’s housing crisis. Instead of gaining access to private sector mortgage lending, the vast majority of loans made to Black consumers came through government-backed programs such 16

as VA and FHA. These programs comprise a smaller share of the overall market in 2013 compared to 2012. In 2013, Black homebuyers utilized these loans at a rate of 70.6 percent, followed by Latino purchases at 62.8 percent, while white borrowers participated at a rate of 35.3 percent. “This enduring trend of underserving key segments of the population is deeply disturbing,” said Nikitra Bailey, executive vice president of the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL). “As the slow housing recovery demonstrates, there is a market imperative to ensure that African-Americans, Latinos, and middle class families have access to mortgages in both the public and private sectors of the market. The market cannot fully recover without them.” Other consumer advocates expressed similar concerns. “Certainly people of color right now don’t feel like the mortgage market is a place they’re wanted,” said Julia Gordon, director of housing finance and policy at the Center for American Progress to Bloomberg News. “They’ve heard the coded speech about certain groups not being ready for homeownership.” Today, some housing industry stakeholders argue that low levels of lending to Black consumers and other low-wealth consumers is due to increased consumer protections now required in mortgage lending. However, the new protections represent a much-needed, common sense approach. They are designed to protect borrowers from facing a repeat of the abuses that caused the recent foreclosure crisis. These new standards, enacted earlier this year, also require lenders to determine a borrower’s ability to repay their mortgage, eliminate loan steering and crack down on broker kickbacks in mortgage lending. Actual lending experiences have proven that if lenders use responsible underwriting standards, many low-to-moderate income borrowers, regardless of race, have become successful homeowners with affordable home loan payments at fixed rates. These borrowers also gain the financial benefit of building wealth through homeownership. For example, the Community Advantage home loan program offered by Self-Help, CRL’s parent organization, provides home loans with fair terms and reasonable rates. As a nonprofit, community financial development institution, Self-Help served these borrowers who were then able to succeed in their loans and build wealth – even during the Great Recession.

Cancer workshop focuses on prevention–not disparities What can you do to prevent cancer in your lifetime? With all the focus on the most common types of cancer, what are other types of cancer that occur in the Black community? What types of treatment are available? When it comes to cancer, the media abounds with stories about the disparities with cancer and communities of color. Little is said about how to address these disparities. Advocate Trinity Hospital, 2320 E. 93rd St., in partnership with WVON-AM, is hosting an engaging panel discussion on Saturday, October 18 that will cover causes, prevention and treatments. The panel will be moderated by WVON’s Cliff Kelley, host of the 3:30 Focus With Cliff Kelley. “African Americans have the highest death rate from many cancers including breast cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer,

panelist. “It is now absolutely an emergency for Black people in America to increase their focus on prevention.” Confirmed panelists include: Joseph Thomas, MD, OB/GYN;

Julie Taylor, MD, Family Medicine; Dominic Tolitano, MD, Thoracic Surgery; and Ike Oguejiofor, MD, Urology. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at noon. The loca-

tion will be at the WVON-AM studios, located at 1000 E. 87th Street in Chicago. To register for the event, please call 1-800-3-ADVOCATE or visit www.advocatehealth.com/trin.

Black women 65 percent more likely to die of breast cancer CountyCare offers access to free early screening African-American women are 55 percent more likely to die of breast cancer than white women, according to the American Cancer Society, even though the white women are more prone to the disease. In Cook County, the difference is even more pronounced — Black women are 65 percent more likely to die of breast cancer than their white counterparts. Cook County Health & Hospi-

tals System offers women free early screenings and expert care to fight this trend. “The best way to battle breast cancer is to catch it early,” said Dr. Elizabeth Marcus, chair of the Breast Oncology Division at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. “There have been remarkable advancements in cancer treatments over the years. CCHHS has made recent investments in new, state-of-the-art mammography and has a long history of providing multidisciplinary cancer

care.” Through CountyCare, a new Medicaid managed-care program provided through CCHHS, qualifying Cook County residents have access to free screenings, treatment and transportation, as well as some of the country’s top experts and technology. There are three important tips that women should remember about breast cancer screening and prevention: • Exercise 30 minutes a day and keep a healthy weight. Exercise

will help keep you, your heart and your breasts healthy. Remember that more women die of heart disease than breast cancer. • Limit alcohol intake to one drink per day. Alcohol is one of the risk factors for breast cancer that you have control over and can change. • Get regular mammograms. Screening mammograms don’t prevent cancer, but they can pick up cancers at an early, treatable stage. Talk with your doctor about the right age to start and how of-

ten to have them. “The most effective way to fight the disease is to find it in the early stages whether by self-exam, your primary care physician’s exam or through screen detection and seek prompt evaluation of any abnormalities,” Marcus said. “Early detection saves the lives of thousands of women each year. With high-quality free screenings and expert care from CCHHS doctors and nurses, we can improve detection and quality of life.”

Governors State University kicks off first athletic season Exhibition Men’s Basketball Pits GSU Jaguars against Trinity International Trojans The new Governors State athletics program made its debut on October 9 with an exhibition basketball matchup against Trinity International University in the GSU gymnasium. “Our fans should expect high tempo full court explosive basketball for 40 minutes,” said Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach Tony Bates. The men’s basketball exhibition game also kicked off the GSU Family & Friends Weekend, which started with a pep rally in the GSU Hall of Governors. “We’re recommending that fans come directly from the rally since space is limited to 500 in our gymnasium,” added Coach Bates. Fans that didn’t make it to the debut were able to see the men’s team, which had a quick turn-around a few days later against Loyola University’s Ramblers Club Team in the GSU gymnasium. The GSU Women’s Basketball team debuts on Saturday, October 18 against a team of standout players from some of Chicago’s leading programs. “We’re excited about going up against some great basketball
