Extra police presence doesn’t ease Crane students’ fears

Half of Crane High School’s student body returned to the near west side school the first day of class following spring break. Even with the large contingent of police encircling the school, lingering fears of gang retaliation for the shooting death of a fellow classmate kept students home. Ruben Ivy, 18, was shot to death March 7 outside the school by another Crane student, Devonte Smith. The murder was allegedly as a result of a long running dispute between the two. Smith, 15, has been charged as an adult with first degree murder. The beefed up police presence was part of a campaign to escort students from the ABLA housing development, 1254 South Loomis, to the school safely. In Operation Safe Passage, community leaders, residents, Crane’s principal Richard Smith, along with Ald. Bob Fioretti (2) walked ABLA students to a bus stop where they then boarded CTA buses. The buses, escorted by police, then took the students to school. The effort was to thwart rumors of retaliation against an ABLA resident. Devonte Smith apparently lived in that housing development, while Ivy had ties to another housing project. For 16-year-old freshman, Jenise Grandberry, the extra police had little effect. The police, Grandberry said, were at the school when Ivy was shot, and it still happened. The patrols, she added, only cover travel to and from school, not the entire neighbor-

hood. “They’re securing Crane, but what about the rest of the blocks?” she lamented. “People can walk down the streets and get it crackin’. It really don’t mean nothing.” Racheal Gladney, a 17-year-old Crane se-

nior, has similar fears. While she has been to school since the shooting, several of her friends have not. “Students who had nothing to do with it are afraid to come to school because they don’t know what’s going to happen,” she

said “They thought Ruben’s friends might want to retaliate.” Unlike others, senior Marcus Williams, 17, says he feels safe at the school. “Crane is not really a bad school as peo(Continued on page 2)

He said community residents fight recovery homes from opening in their communities but do little to fight drug houses or open-a ir markets. Sitting next to William s is Henry McGhe e Jr., of Henry’s Sober Living H ouse, Joseph Wheeler of SEADAC and Kamil Bowie of Youth Connection Charter School who discussed drug treatment for youth.

30-year drug habit was taught at 11 years old to “main line” or shoot up heroine by an older uncle. “Adolescent substance abuse is a byproduct of family dysfunction,” Wheeler explained, noting that treatment options should include one-on-one, group and family counseling. Wheeler insist that early drug intervention should start in the

resources, then they develop the resiliency skills (to not) participate in anti-social behaviors.” Kamil Bowie, education to careers director for Youth Connection Charter Schools, agreed. Bowie noted that 32 percent of the alternative high school’s 3,000 students have drug related barriers that prevent them from succeeding in school. The charter school, which has 22 campuses

Nearly 1.1 million youth ages 12 to 17 are drug dependent with another 1 million treated for alcohol dependency, according to the National Youth Network’s website. Nationwide, one in every six high school seniors reported drug or alcohol use. But treatment option for this segment of the population is lacking. Substance abuse treatment advocates hope new federal legislation passed recently by Congress would plug that gap by providing funding for more drug treatment services for youths. The Senate, earlier this month, unanimously passed Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-7) Second Chance Act, which now awaits the president’s signature. The House passed the measure late last year. The measure’s unanimous passage indicates that government and society willingness to look beyond addiction as being about drug abuse, but as a major health issue, Davis explained. While the Congress has just begun its appropriation process, Davis hopes the measure will have an annual authorization of $165 million. “There has been constant advocacy around trying to get people to understand that this is a public health issue, a public health problem,” he said. “But we still haven’t touched the surface in terms of need. We are getting these little things done that we couldn’t do

when Republicans controlled Congress.” The measure’s intent is to provide services and resources to help returning ex-offenders successfully re-integrate back into society. It would fund programs that increase access to drug treatment, job training, reduce recidivism and create family-based treatment programs for incarcerated individuals with children. But treatment advocates from both nonprofits and faith-based agencies gathered last week at Davis’ West Side district office to flesh out how these funds can assist a population that flies under the radar when it comes to drug treatment. “As a director of an adolescent drug treatment program, I get high schools calling me all the time asking me to develop some type of program in their schools,” said

Joseph Wheeler, director of youth outpatient services for South East Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center (SEADAC). “However, I am funded for three people on the entire south side of Chicago.” Wheeler contends that conventional drug prevention programs don’t necessarily work. Many inner city youths have already been exposed to the drug culture because of the environment they live in. Instead, programs should focus on early intervention to prevent passive drug use from escalating into hardcore drug use, Wheeler explained. Youth are at risk for drug abuse if their parents abuse drugs or alcohol, or if teens live in neighborhoods where open-air drug markets go on unchallenged by community groups, the advocates noted. One advocate described a case where an addict battling a

high school, and focus on jobs, education and recreational resources to deter youth from standing on street corner “selling rocks and blows.” These types of “pro-social behavior” programs promote the importance of college, entrepreneurialship or developing a trade. “They (youths) don’t see education as something that they can positively benefit them,” Wheeler said. “If they are provided with these positive attachments and

throughout the city, services students ages 16 to 21, many of them dropouts from the Chicago Public School system. They need supportive services to address their addiction, especially when they age out of DCFS systems, Bowie said, noting that once that happens students have limited options. “Part of the problem is stopping (drug use) at a young age to produce good communities and good adults,” he explained.

(Continued from page 1) ple make it seem. I never felt any harm. I always felt safe,” said Williams, who also went back to school after the shooting. Of Crane’s 1,200 students only 52.8 percent came to school last week, according to a CPS

spokesperson. Crane’s average attendance rate is 73 percent. Principal Smith would not comment on the extra security or students’ fears. But he said the school and its students are moving forward. “We are focusing on academics,

not anything that has to do with the tragedy,” he said. While many Crane staffers left the school with no comments, a few who wanted to remain anonymous said things are slowly returning to normal, but admit there is tension among the “three or four” gangs in the school. A computer science teacher, who did not want to be identified, said 20 percent of his students haven’t returned while three out of his 120 transferred. “We are making the best out of the situation. We are just doing our jobs. It’s unfortunate that a life was lost, but we are doing our jobs,” said another teacher who would not give her name. Tensions at Crane are nothing new said Tio Hardiman, CeaseFire’s mediation service director. Hardiman grew up near Crane and he said tensions between different gang fractions living in

ABLA, Henry Horner and the former Rockwell Gardens housing projects have festered for 20 years. “There is not just a whole lot of mediation skills,” he explained. “Most guys get into a conflict, and they feel the only way to get out of the conflict is to shoot somebody. That’s what’s going on.” Hardiman said CeaseFire plans to mediate between the different fractions to stop the violence. “We know there is going to be retaliations,” said Renee Mandeldove, 56, whose foster daughter has not been back to Crane since the shooting. “We have been here a long time.” Mandeldove, a West Haven resident since age 8, believes the police presence will delay the inevitable. But she hopes efforts to bring the gangs together will prove her wrong. “It’s got to come from us,” she

said. When asked how long the police will stay at Crane, Ald. Fioretti said that will be evaluated over time. However, Fioretti recognized students’ fears are genuine, but he noted Operation Safe Passage aims to reaffirm that Crane is “a place to come to focus on their education and not worry about their safety.” Taiesha Stroud, 17, sees it differently. She said the extra police presence and the bus escort is a bandage. The senior said it will work for a while until it “ wears off.” But Stroud believes Ivy’s death has sparked a movement at Crane to be more proactive in stopping gang activity, instead of letting it linger. “I think this is the change that Crane needed, and it is bad that it took one of our own to die for them to realize they need to make a change,” she said.

Al Sharpton, M. L. King III to Host ‘Recommitment March’’ on 40th Anniversary of King Assassination By Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief WASHINGTON (NNPA) – The Rev. Al Sharpton, preparing to lead a historic “recommitment march” on the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. next week, says Blacks are still in the wilderness. “When you do a comparative analysis of the Children of Israel who had gotten out of bondage but had not gotten into the promised land, you will see that part of the problem was that they were not empowered in the land where they were, but they were also plagued by their own behavior,” Sharpton said in an interview this week. “We have crossed the red sea of segregation, public accommoda-

tions and voting rights,” he continues. “But, we are still oppressed by a combination of what the Pharoahs have done and the fact that some of us have succumbed to false values and oppression…Compounding our struggle are Black on Black crime, the killing, drug use, the glorification of Gangsta Rap,” he says. The answer is remembering – as the Children of Israel did – to become in sync with the “values of the God that brought us out,” he says. “Kaleb and Joshua, who made it in, never surrendered to the psychological oppression of Pharoah.” According to a statement, a 1:00pm pre-march rally will be held at the Memphis City Hall with the Recommitment March to the Lorraine Motel beginning

He says the march will bring thousands from across to dedicate, and rededicate themselves to lead the fight for social justice for the next 40 years. Referring to Dr. King as “our Moses” Sharpton says that he, King III, and many others “will commit ourselves to making a better life and community.’’ According to Sharpton’s National Action Network, The march will cap a string of events in Memphis as Sharpton hosts the 10th annual convention of NAN at the Peabody Memphis from April 2nd to April 5th. States a release, “The historic gathering will be an impressive who’s who in civil rights, business, politics, labor, entertainment and the religious community.” The line up includes a “State of the Economy” report by the AFL-CIO on Wednesday, April 2; also an HIV/AIDS national dialogue that day. Also, on April 2, a ticketed “Keepers of the Dream Awards Dinner, hosted by Mo’Nique, will honor Cicely Tyson, Academy-Award nominated Actress; Thomas DiNapoli, New York State Comptroller; Myrlie Evers Williams, Medgar Evers Institute; Earl Graves, Sr., Black Enterprise Magazine; William Lucy, Coalition of Black Trade Unionist; Wyatt Tee Walker, and Civil Rights Pioneer Ian M. Family of man who lit girlfriend on fire says it was an accident By J. Coyden Palmer The mother and brother of a South Side man who allegedly set his girlfriend on fire after an argument, say they don’t believe he did it intentionally. Cook County prosecutors and police disagree and arrested the man this week after speaking to the victim for the first time since the incident took place two months ago. Damenique Traylor of the 800 block of West 71st St. is currently being held in Cook County Jail on a $3 million bond after turning himself into police on March 24th. Traylor, 21, allegedly lit his 18 year-old former girlfriend, Keaira Washington on fire Jan. 15 at Traylor’s home after the couple quarreled and she threatened to leave him, prosecutors said. Traylor has a history of domestic violence, having been arrested but not convicted. He has been charged with heinous battery and faces between six and 30 years in prison if convicted. The victim was left severely disfigured, suffering third degree burns on her stomach, neck and arms. Traylor told emergency room staff at St. Bernard Hospital that his girlfriend was injured during an accident while the couple was barbequing. His family said after the girlfriend was on fire, Traylor brought her inside and extinguished the flames by dumping her in the tub and turning on the water. They also claim Traylor himself was burned in the inci-

dent. “I don’t think he meant to set her on fire,” said his brother, who said he saw the woman burning and admitted the couple was arguing. “He wouldn’t have gotten himself burned and risked injury by extinguishing the flames and taking her to the hospital if he meant to harm her.” The suspect’s mother is also defending him. Rose Traylor said her son is a nice man who would never do anything like the crime he is accused of. “He tried to help everybody that he could. He was real nice to people,” she said. “I feel sorry for what happened to her [Washington] and I feel sorry for what my son is going through now.” His uncle also said his nephew is innocent. Joseph Gibson said what happened was merely a freak accident. That reasoning isn’t sitting well with prosecutors, who described Washington’s injuries as “life threatening” and said the charges could be upgraded to murder if the woman dies. Washington came out of a coma last week and was able to tell police what happened. She said before dousing her with charcoal lighter fluid and chasing her around with a lighter before igniting her, Traylor told her he would “burn and kill her,” according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin. The victim was released from Stroger Hospital last week but

KUJICHAGULIA REVISITED Kujichagulia, self-determination, is one of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) that is usually highlighted during the Kwanzaa season. In actuality, however it, along with the other six principles, should be focused upon all year long. Unfortunately, many people in the African American community have given control of their community to “others” and Kujichagulia has gone by the proverbial wayside. Who are these others? They are the individuals who are taking control of many communities and making them unsafe for everyone. They are the ones who are killing our children and seniors. They are the ones who are shooting some of our best and brightest teens. They are the ones who have made it “uncool” to excel academically. The lowest common denominator has gained ascendancy, and while they are at the helm, Kujichagulia will remain a remote dream. It is no secret that capitalism influences almost everything in the United States. When it comes to corporate America, greed is god. Profits are what drive everything, and the corporate world, therefore, is not a “democracy.” Because of this, some people have just about sold their souls for a mess of pottage, and this is what’s happening to many Black youth (and adults). Because values are placed on material acquisition and not on people, people have become devalued. This is one of the reasons why the Black community is turning into a citadel of death. Once upon a time during the early days of slavery, the face of fear was the White slave master. Today, that face is more frequently of a darker hue. Black people are killing Black people at phenomenal rates. One of the latest cases is that of a 70-year-old woman in Chicago who was shot and killed in her home! When is the community going to become outraged? When is the Black community going to exercise Kujichagulia? How many more innocent women, men and children will have to lose their lives before the community takes matters in hand to seriously address this problem? The truth of the matter is that nothing will change until Kujichagulia kicks in. Collective self-determination is the only thing that will begin to turn things around. In order for that to happen, there must be a concerted effort on the part of those in the community with the wherewithal to bring the issue to the forefront. It must receive the same type of attention that the Super Bowl or any other entertainment event does. It must be trumpeted in schools. There should be zero tolerance regarding acceptance of atavistic, counterproductive behavior. We must refuse to look askance when our youth embrace negative icons like pimps, and liberally strew epithets like “niggas” and “hos.” We must frown on incredibly violent video games like Grand Theft Auto, which encourages murder and other anti-social behavior. Kujichagulia means taking control of life and steering it in a desired direction. This will not happen in the African American community until the overwhelming negativity, which arguably has its origins in an oppressive, Whitedominated past, is effectively addressed. No one can save us but us! A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Who is qualified to be “Commander In Chief ” Dear Editor: I asked my self this question. Is it possible that the Clinton campaign and her surrogates are sending racially tinged messages coded to similar demographics in Pennsylvania? I ask this because of the recent rants and discussions Senator Clinton has had about who is qualified to be “Commander In Chief.” Since this initial question of Obama’s “qualification” has come up, we have had the Ed Rendell’s comments, talk show host Bill Cunningham’s and Iowa Congressman Steve King’s “Hussein” comments, and now Geraldine Ferraro’s comments. Rendell and Ferraro are Democrats. But strangely, there has not been a repudiation of these statements of Rendell and Ferraro. Clinton never made the statements, but she seems to be very comfortable in letting these comments just stay there and marinate with her “base.” Senator Clinton’s response to this? “It is regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides, because we’ve both had that experi-

ence, say things that kind of veer off into the personal,” she told the AP. “We ought to keep this on the issues. There are differences between us. There are differences between our approaches on health care, on energy, on our experience, on our results that we’ve produced for people. That’s what this campaign should be about.” Wow....And Ferraro just keeps right on talking... Says Ferraro,” Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign (Obama’s) down and says let’s address reality and the problems we’re facing in this world, you’re accused of being racist, so you have to shut up,’ Ferraro said. ‘Racism works in two different directions. I really think they’re attacking me because I’m white. How’s that?’... And Obama had to repudiate this statement by Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan,”A Black man with a white mother became a savior to us,” Farrakhan said Sunday. “A black man with a white mother could turn out to be one who can lift America from her fall.” I wonder who sounds like a healer and who sounds racist? Just asking..... Is this why the 3 AM ad was so effective? Just asking. When Senator Clinton says at a press conference that she and McCain brings a “lifetime of foreign

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Obama answers the call with a speech supreme By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Oh, they thought they, at long last, had him. “They” are the ultra conservatives who believe that they have a manifest destiny to control all things on earth and to

Harry C. Alford make people of color serve them and be obedient. To their frustration has come this bright and refreshing political aspirant with the funny (and Muslim) name of Barack Oba-

ma. In their view he isn’t suppose to be in this election at all. But somehow he has slipped through and is gathering incredible “steam” much to the fear of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and their ilk. It is for this very reason that the great General Colin Powell decided not to get into a political race. They will go over your entire life from nursery school to the drink you had last week. They will literally comb your very existence. To their dismay, Obama appears to be remarkably clean. That being the case they turned to his wife and I am sure they have done some checking on his two cute daughters. After that they looked at his friends and business associates. Bingo! He has a strong minister whose words are many and can be taken out of context. They pounced on the opportunity with full force. I have never seen, even in these days, the concentrated effort given at demonizing the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. It takes a lot of courage and commitment to enter into a national political race in this nation. Sen. Obama knew this and was indeed ready. His reverend was ready also and has taken the

heat with much grace. Reverend Wright is a strong speaker and most African-Americans prefer this style compared with the sedated bland oratory. This is my kind of preacher. He knows the gospel and calls out those who stray and appeals to the inner feeling of his audience. I can’t wait to sit in on one of his speeches now that he has retired and will be on the circuit. They thought they had something that would stick on Obama and bring him down. They demanded that he rebuke his minister of 20 years and completely turn his back on him. They also wanted Obama to apologize to them and become contrite. There is something about a strong Black man that just scares the inner core of the average American conservative. However, that is not our problem and we cannot change something as deeply rooted as racial animus. This becomes a very tricky game. I was taught during my tenure with Procter & Gamble that the best way to avoid a controversial conversation is to stay away from the subjects of Race, Politics and Religion. The trap that they put Obama into was a triple hitter. It was all three taboos laced into

one. The pressure was relentless. Even the liberal stations and papers went on the offensive against the Senator. His political rivals were all smiles as the news barrage built to a massive chant. The moment came when Sen. Obama had to make a move – a very big move. It would take a certain amount of courage and wisdom. It appears now that he, indeed, has that courage and wisdom. He answered on national television with a self written speech that caught the attention of every human being walking on American soil. Sen. Obama’s 5,000 words, 27 minute speech was simply brilliant. He talked about his own journey in this multi-cultural world and how he sees we should address the issues at hand. No, he would not rebuke Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the man, but would take exception to some of his comments. He called out to America to look into its inner core and evaluate itself on where we should be heading. We can stay in this rut and continue to put race back into the closet or we can finally come to terms with it. “This time” he would say, “Let’s do it differently.” As Governor

Bill Richardson would claim at his subsequent endorsement of Sen. Obama, “He showed us leadership and courage. He will be a great and historical President.” This coming from a lifelong friend of the Clintons clearly showed the success of Sen. Obama’s words. Reverend Joseph Lowery, a confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King, said “It was the best speech I have heard since Dr. King’s Notes from the Birmingham Jail”. In my book, this was the highest compliment he could have paid Barack Obama. That puts him into the circle of greatness and it comes from a leader beyond reproach. I don’t know how it is going to end up but I have learned something during the past week. Barack Obama has courage, wisdom and strength. I must say to the Sen. Obama you have just delivered words that will be taught in classrooms for decades to come. You are, Sir, the “right stuff”. ‘Mama, They Need to Know’ By Iris Venable NNPA Special Commentary I remember when I first learned about his HIV. It was a slow revelation. A little at a time, it became painfully clear. It started about six years ago near winter time. My son, Antonio Terry Jr., my “Sunshine” I called him as a boy. He’s in heaven now. But, he left a message here on earth. My name is Iris Venable. Although God has given me peace since my son’s death just this year, I represent the face of the pain, the mothers and the loved ones left behind by the scourge of HIV/AIDS in our community. It was six years ago when my son, Tony, then only about 24, lost his apartment. I went looking for him and I found him in a crack house. At that time he seemed more concerned about his music albums than himself. He asked me to take them to safety. I took his albums, knowing how much they meant to him. But I also invited him to come to live with me. He came with a family - a girlfriend and two children who also needed a home. But, he also brought with him a shroud of secrecy. His girlfriend was ill much of the time. She was back and forth in the hospital with

Iris Venable with her son Antonio Terry Jr. ailments like pneumonia. Unable to turn away my grandchildren, I helped the family the best I could. I asked him repeatedly, ‘Are you sure that girl is alright?’ He’d say yes. But then I’d see her with these big bottles of medicine. She said it was nothing and that she was just anemic. Finally, over time, I kind of guessed it because I’d gotten a letter at my house saying my son needed to be checked for HIV. Medical personnel also constantly called, asking him to be checked. So, I pled with him too. But, he just kept saying, “No, Mom I’m fine.” I would say, “You’re in de-

nial.” It took him at least two years before he got checked and the doctors finally confirmed it. He confessed that he thought it would just go away if he ignored it. They got him started on his medications and for a while he was happy even relieved. But, then the side affects of the medicines seemed to have a worse affect on him than the disease itself. The constant diarrhea and nausea were unbearable. The medicines also gave him mood-swings. Then, he started having seizures. I watched as my son slowly deteriorated, his legs weakening, some-

times unable to walk. As he neared the age of 30, I would often recall him in his prime. He had a gift. The gift was that people hung on to his every word. They didn’t have to know him and they still hung on to his every word. There were people on my front steps all the time. I would say, “Tony, why are those people on my front steps?” He would say, “I have no idea. I asked them to go home. But, they’re waiting for me to come back out.” Even when he attended church, those who ministered to him the prayer of salvation now chuckle that he did more talking than they did. The last seizure that he had was in August last year. That is when he also began to hallucinate from the medication. He never came back home from that one. The doctors diagnosed PML (progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy), which they described as a condition in which the HIV had attacked the brain, causing it to shrink. Ever since then, he lived between hospitals and nursing homes. On Feb. 12, the Lord took Tony home. He would be turning 31 this year had he lived ‘til Mother’s Day.

Saturday, March 29, 2008

I would often talk heart to heart with Tony when the medications were not causing him to be delirious. I can hear now the essence of the message that he desired to bring to other young men and women. I hope they will hear it too: He’d say, “Mama, they need to know, if you have to have sex even safe sex - don’t just jump anything. Don’t take sex causally because you don’t want to be where I am. You don’t want to know when your last day is. You don’t want to take these medications for the rest of your life. You don’t want people looking at you funny. You can’t get a shot for this. You don’t want this. You don’t want any parts of it.”

African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister

Dr. Conrad Worrill our quest for economic independence. We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance. One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self reliant and self sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout he world, we find one glaring problem— 6

Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book Race First, which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civil-rights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house. Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African

people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact is, this is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man... Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

We the people have stared at both administrations of President George W. Bush and his attack upon the U.S. Constitution at every turn you can think of and referred to the U.S. Constitution in a derogatory way. If you all can remember that he and all of

Maurice A. Clayton our elected officials by relating to the American people that they would defend the constitution so help me God. It appears that God did not go along with either of the elections of George W. Bush. At the same time we find out that during the administration of William (Bill) Clinton (who was the one who violated the U.S. Constitution) your phones calls were being bugged by the F.B.I., etc., all in violation of the Constitution. The following administration—George W. Bush—enhanced upon the Clinton violation’s and caused the communications companies, especially AT&T (Atlantic Telephone & Telegraph Co.), who ever approached that company shook up the whole company because it became known that not only did that company comply because it became known that not only did that company comply with that company by turning over and above what was asked for. Both these presidents failed the American people by their actions. We can understand that there are times when actions that are necessary to defend we the people but not at the loss of any or all rights we have under the Constitution. All of this makes one wonder if they passed their Constitution test or even pass civics class. It would have been understood if they went ahead and asked the U.S. public, they more than likely would have gone along if they showed that it

would make them more safe by their vigilance towards those whom they had cause to believe they were conspiring against our Commonwealth. When we look at the overall picture of our politicians here in Chicago, you must remember that we have had more alderpersons that have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar and that was the least of their crimes when you consider the fact that rumors have persisted for years that local politicians have used gang members to coerce the public to vote in one direction or another. If you pay attention to the news just before a local election, you would note that the state’s attorney and or the U.S. attorney would announce that personnel from these law enforcement offices to insure that the election is fair. Any and all persons involved can be charged with a felony. It has been common that most Americans fail to safeguard their constitutional rights for themselves or family member. For years, people who were persons of color were perceived to be “cry babies”with their complaining about the conduct of law enforcement until whites became victims of overbearing acts by police who have lost their way in their chosen profession. Then there was the beating of a female bartender who had recently gave birth sixteen months prior to a tremendous beating by a male officer who weighed 250# (pounds) and was shown all over the world. I would venture to say that during that same year police officers beat an old Black woman who suffered with mental problems and had not been seen for a while and the police were notified to check on her and when they arrived she became fearful and combative out of fear of the strangers. Instead of calling for an ambulance or help the elderly sick Black woman. She was shocked with a Taser electroshock weapon and physically restrained, luckily she did not die. At the same time you have to understand that police officers are trained to defend themselves and others but sometimes these officers bring to the table their personal biases and the crap hits the fan and you and I begin to (Continued on page 16) The Chicago Crusader

ENOUGH ALREADY

Hillary Clinton has got to be absolutely retarded. How in the world did she ever expect to get away with telling a lie about dodging bullets and running for cover while travelling overseas as the First Lady. Thank god Sinbad was with her on the 1995 trip to Bosnia because he busted the lie all the way out. How many times Ima got to tell you that white folks lie—-but you can’t do it. They been jumping up and down on Obama’s head so long they done forgot folks are looking. The Clintons are notorious for the lies they tell—all the way from not knowing about real estate scandals to how some of their closet companions wind up dead all the time to what constitutes a sex act to how they participated in the civil rights movement. Ima don’t even believe they married. If Obama doesn’t get the nomination, you might as well get used to saying President McCain— and then Ima will move back to Ottawa.

Those bougie Negroes must have thought their pedigrees would save them be treated like the rest of us. What’s even sadder is that white folk actually think Wright is some type of race leader. Ima don’t remember ever seeing him on the front lines of no pickets nor do we recall him standing up in the ‘hood. In fact all he does is run his mouth in his pulpit and run up under Mayor Daley. None the less, we got to defend the Negro otherwise they might go after the Blackest preacher in America—Father Michael Pfleger.

Ima heard on the television that after doctors pronounced a man dead and got read to jug him with a knife to remove his juicy organs, the man popped back alive. Ima is very concerned about this because she is certain that they buried Godfrey Cambridge alive in 1976. And James Brown aint dead either—otherwise why would his family keep him in the living room like that. Wouldn’t he get to smelling—least of course they filled his coffin with lots of dry ice. Girl Scouts of the USA, community groups sought to provide federally resourced child-parent visitation program WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Bobby L. Rush and the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) have united to reduce the self-destructive childhood behavior associated with having an incarcerated parent. On March 13, Rep. Rush urged Congress to support “H.R.5654: The Families Beyond Bars Act of 2008,” a bill that seeks to establish resources for youth-serving organizations, such as the GSUSA, which carry out childparent visitation programs for children with incarcerated parents. About 1.5 million children in the U.S. have at least one incarcerated parent, and an estimated 10 million more have at least one parent who was incarcerated at some point during that child’s developmental years, according to the Bureau of Justice. Also, in 2006, an estimated 75% of incarcerated women were mothers of children under the age of 18. “It is horrible to witness a new generation of children that are all too familiar with the criminal justice system,” said Rep. Rush. “Congress and the community must come together to provide a comprehensive solution to this social ill that threatens to sentence too many of our children to a life of pain and suffering.” The Families Beyond Bars Act found that “Children of incarcerated parents often battle attention deficit disorder resulting in poor school attendance and grades, depression, aggression, low self esteem, substance abuse, teen pregnancy and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.” Furthermore, “children with imprisoned parents may be nearly six times more likely than their

peers to be incarcerated.” “Girl Scouts Beyond Bars helps strengthen the fragile parentdaughter bond by giving girls and moms a chance to connect with each other in powerful ways during a very difficult period,” said Kathy Cloninger, CEO, Girl Scouts of the USA. “The Beyond Bars experience gives girls a stable and shared peer experience, while also keeping them involved in their mother’s lives, which gives girls a much better chance to grow up with the security and confidence needed to succeed in the future. As the nation’s voice of girls, it is imperative for Girl Scouts to partner with government to help girls who are most at risk to develop the courage and confidence they will need to thrive.” The Bill would authorize the U. S. Attorney General to award grants between $200,000 and $310,000 to qualified organizations to carry out structured child-parent visitation programs that foster and develop familial ties between eligible children and their incarcerated parents. Among the duties to be performed by the groups would include counseling, transportation, security, enrichment activities, and obtaining program materials. Original co-sponsors include U.S. Reps. Hank Johnson, Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI), GK Butterfield (D-NC), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Danny Davis (D-IL), Gwen Moore (D-WI), Donald Payne (D-NJ), Sheila JacksonLee (D-TX), Donna Christiansen (D-VI), Steve Cohen (DTN), John Lewis (D-GA), Diane Watson (D-CA), Lois Capps (DCA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Jane Harman (D-CA), Lacy Clay (D-MO), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), C.A. It plays on the fears that some whites may have of about affirmative action and their perception that it has taken away their jobs or that African-Americans have only benefited because of it. Remember the Allan Bakke case was only a generation ago. Kitchen table politics has it way of filtering down from generation to generation. To me there is this sense that since African-Americans are voting for Obama at a 85-90% plurality in caucuses and primaries,

the Clinton campaign has given up on fighting for that vote and have concentrated on sending messages to whites who feel they have been disenfranchised by Blacks and Latinos. This is the Willie Horton of this presidential campaign. They could not get away with calling Senator the “Black Candidate,” but they can get away with calling him unqualified prior to the Ohio and Pennsylvania primaries that pandor to a less educated, white, blue-collar electorate. just to remind you Pennsylvania is described as Pittsburgh on the west, Philadelphia on the east and Alabama in the middle. I wonder if Mrs. Clinton is willing to play games and be comfortable with the American psyche by taking a very dangerous tilt towards the dumbing down of its voters and constituents. If so, then I really hope that the change Senator Obama promises really prevails. Does anyone really think America has really become race neutral in this campaign to elect an African-American for President? It’s good question....Just asking.... Algernon H. Penn President 7

COMMUNITY CALENDAR The Washington Informer and The (Memphis) Tri-State Defender Take Top Honors in Entrepreneurial Award Program WASHINGTON (NNPA) — The Washington Informer and The (Memphis) Tri-State Defender have been named winners of the 2008 Chrysler Financial/NNPA Foundation Entrepreneurial Award-a unique award that recognizes the nation’s Black-owned newspapers for their entrepreneurial accomplishments and commitment to community service. The Entrepreneurial Award seeks to encourage members of the Black Press of America to look beyond traditional streams of revenue, such as advertising, and to develop creative ways to thrive in today’s competitive media industry. “These two publications exemplify the spirit of the Entrepreneurial Award in their ability to implement innovative ways to grow their businesses while staying true to their mission to inform and serve their communities,’’ said William Jones, chief operating officer for Chrysler Financial. The Washington Informer won grand prize for The Birney Informer, a supplement produced entirely by third - and fourth-grade students at Birney Elementary School in Southeast Washington, D.C. The Birney Informer is distributed as an insert in The Informer newspaper each month. An additional 1,000 copies are distributed to the school for students, teachers and parents, which increased the overall circulation of the newspaper. In addition, The Birney Informer is posted and archived on The Informer’s Web site. “The Informer’s involvement with this project took it beyond a mere mentoring program,’’ said Jones. “This project not

only contributes to the positive self-esteem of the students, but The Informer is using it as an opportunity to promote literacy in the community as a whole, while continuing to expand the newspaper’s brand and increase its advertising and subscription base. This is the second consecutive year The Washington Informer has won the Entrepreneurial Award. As grand prize winner, publisher Denise Rolark Barnes received a $10,000 cash award, as well as the use of a Chrysler, Jeep® or Dodge vehicle for one week. The GRAMMY award winning Israel and New Breed, who are known for their multi-cultural approach to worship music, are diving deeper into international ministry this year with a globe-trotting tour schedule that includes stops in Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Israel, The Netherlands and Barbados. Israel and New Breed started the year with a February trip to New Zealand before jetting over to Japan for eight performances in four days. In addition, frontman Israel Houghton also made time to visit Japan’s Soul Bird Gospel Music School, which uses the group’s music as part of its curriculum. While there, Houghton served as a guest clinician for 400plus students at classes held at Billboard Live venues in Osaka and Tokyo.

Israel and New Breed This month, the group returned to South Africa, the site of their GoldCertified Alive In South Africa recording, which garnered GRAMMY, Dove and Stellar Awards. Israel and New Breed spent two weeks touring the country with stops in East London, Pretoria, Durban, Centurion, Johannesburg and Cape Town. Through summer and the rest of ‘08, the group has planned tours for The Netherlands, Zimbabwe and Israel. While in the Holy Land in October, Israel Houghton will participate with leading worship artists Darlene Zschech, Don Moen and Messianic worship leader Paul Wilbur in a live Integrity Music recording slated to take place in Jerusalem. “We’re humbled and honored that the doors for us to minister to the international community are open like never before,” says Houghton. “And, we’re excited to have the opportunity to represent the Body of Christ in ways that reach each of these respective cultures.” When not touring abroad, Israel and New Breed continue to minister in the U.S. and Canada. They have also scheduled their annual “A Deeper Level” conference for May and will be participating in the Gospel Music Association’s “Music in the Rockies” conference in August. Updated tour and conference information is available at the group’s newly enhanced website, www.newbreedmusic.com.

‘Everything Your Mother Should Have Told You about Your PocketBook…But Didn’t’ In a first-of-its-kind study, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revealed that 1 in 4 teenage girls in the United States has at least one sexually-transmitted disease. The trend is even worse among African-American girls: Nearly half have one or more sexually-transmitted diseases. Amid the CDC’s revelations, PocketBook Communications will be hosting a riveting performance of The PocketBook Monolgues on Monday, March 31st at Mercy Hospital Joyce Auditorium Theater, 2525 South Prairie from 6-8pm. The mission of The PocketBook Monologues is to provide a forum that ad-

dresses intimacy and responsibility with the purpose of reducing the number of HIV/AIDS cases for women of color. Sharon McGhee, author of The PocketBook Monologues and director of the stage production, will perform excerpts featured in the book. Sharing the stage with McGhee to tell the stories of sexual abstinence, intimacy and responsibility will be a trio of ‘PocketBook Ladies in Training’ from ages 13-17, who are affectionately known as ‘the Coin Purses’: Ramsey Carey, Aubriel Fields and Jazel Nance. “I know it is uncomfortable for parents to talk with their children about sexuality and responsibili-

ty, so we are stepping in to provide structure to ensure that girls and women understand the truth and consequences about being intimate in the 21st century,” expressed McGhee. Everything Your Mother Should Have Told You about Your PocketBook…But Didn’t is sponsored by Illinois State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-3rd), Diversified Behavioral Comprehensive Care, Illinois Department of Public Health, the Chicago Department of Public Health and the National Sarcoidosis Society. Admission is $10. For more information, contact PocketBook Communications, 773.960.6148.

The University of Texas (Austin) School of Music has received a gift of $55 million from two Austin arts patrons in what is believed to be the largest single music school gift at a public university. The music school will be named for Dr. Ernest and Sarah Butler in honor of their donation. The couple has supported the school for more than 25 years. UT-Austin president William Powers Jr. made the announcement March 19. The gift will be paid in installments over the couple’s lifetime, including a portion

as a bequest. The money is designated for student, faculty and program support, with more than half of it targeting students’ needs. “We love music, and we have great appreciation for, and belief in, the educational value of the arts,” Ernest Butler said. The Butlers have created nine endowments in the music school since 1983. Ernest Butler is a retired physician. He and his wife have been active in supporting the arts in Austin and are members of the university’s Chancellor’s Council. It is the second-largest gift to the

University of Texas at Austin, after the more than $245 million given from the estate of John A. and Katherine G. Jackson. The university’s Jackson School of Geosciences is named for the Jacksons. The Butlers’ gift surpasses a $44 million donation made in December 2007 by the Lilly Endowment for a new building for the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The University of Texas’ School of Music has more than 700 students and nearly 100 faculty members. AP

CNN to Focus Mammoth Spotlight on Black Experience in America Soledad O’Brien Anchors Documentaries, Special Reports for Four Months Beginning on Anniversary of King’s Death Forty years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., CNN will launch a sweeping on-air and digital initiative, CNN Presents: Black in America. Breaking new ground in revealing the current state of Black America, this landmark programming features six hours of documentaries, a weekly series of reports that will air on CNN/U.S. and CNN International and appear as part of a multimedia online effort. The programming, which airs over four months in 2008, focuses on fresh analysis from new voices about the real lives behind the stereotypes, statistics and identity politics that frequently frame the national dialogue about Black America. Reported by anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien, Black in America begins with the two-hour premiere of Eyewitness to Murder: The King Assassina-

tion, a first-person account of what happened on April 4,1968. Black in America: Eyewitness to Murder - The King Assassination, Thursday, April 3, 9 p.m. (two hours) In this first installment of CNN’s Black in America series, O’Brien investigates how James Earl Ray, an armed robber and escaped convict, had already spent an uncommon year on the run that included plastic surgery just a month before his path collided with that of the civil rights leader in Memphis, Tenn. Through interviews with witnesses and investigators, O’Brien retraces the steps of King, Ray, the FBI and Memphis police and explores alternative scenarios of who was ultimately responsible for the murder that, for some, represented the end of the American Civil Rights era. Black in America continues in July with two additional twohour documentaries that will air on CNN/U.S. and CNN International: Black in America: The Black

Man, Wednesday, July 23, 9 p.m. (two hours) Perhaps the most misreported group in America today, black men are often stereotypically depicted in the media as convicts, gang members and absentee fathers. Told through the personal stories of graduates of the 1968 class of Little Rock Central High School, their sons and grandsons, for The Black Man, O’Brien seeks to determine whether life is better for black men now than it was 40 years ago. She reports on the disparities between blacks and whites in educational, career and economic achievement and factors leading to the devastating rates of black male incarceration. Contributing expert analysis are Harvard economist Dr. Roland Fryer, Princeton professor Dr. Devah Pager, journalist/social commentator Ellis Cose; and Georgetown University professor Dr. Michael Eric Dyson; and others. O’Brien reports on successes and dissects myths to explore the state of black men in America today. Black in America:

Advocates celebrate World Kidney Day; Raise awareness about kidney disease The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois (NKFI) and the American Kidney Fund have worked vigilantly this month to bring about awareness of ways to treat and prevent kidney disease. On, March 13 The National Kidney Foundation celebrated World Kidney Day with a full day of FREE early detection screenings and interactive festivities that were designed to help raise awareness of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), high blood pressure and diabetes. World Kidney Day activities take place at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Physical Education Building, 901 W. Roosevelt Rd., Chicago. The nation’s first and only KidneyMobile® was on hand for tours. The day included a lively afternoon of salsa dancing demonstrations and hula hoping. Several Chicago dignitaries, such as Secretary of State Jesse White were in attendance helping to get the message of hope to the general community. Delicious gourmet food was prepared by Carnivale Chef Mark Mendez. “Diabetes and high blood pressure can destroy the kidneys, which is especially devastating because kidney disease can be prevented through early detection, treatment and lifestyle change. The screenings and treatment counseling that we are providing for free at our World Kidney Day event can help encourage people to take control of their health to avoid kidney failure” said Willa Lang, CEO, National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. “Chronic kidney disease is an especially grave concern for our African American and Latino communities, (which) are affected by kidney disease more than any other ethnic groups. The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois strives to provide easy ac-

cess to kidney-related health screenings throughout the state of Illinois. Our event on World Kidney Day is one of many days when the world shares in a united message of disease prevention, and seeks to highlight the urgent need for all people to have the tools to live healthy and active lifestyles.” The World Kidney Day event began with legislators and community leaders visiting with screening participants and touring the KidneyMobile®. Every attendee had the opportunity to participate in the free health screenings, and received counseling on strategies for a healthier diet, plus life-saving next steps in the case that abnormal screening results were discovered. In fact, more than 68 percent of those

overall population) are at a disproportionately high risk for kidney disease. The good news is that kidney disease can often be prevented. According to the Startling statistics show that one out of every three people with kidney failure is African-American and that Chicago has some of the highest number at-risk patients in the country, along with DC, Atlanta and NYC. And the average cost of treating kidney failure per patient per year is $57,000. NKFI’s KidneyMobile® is the nation’s first and only mobile classroom and screening program dedicated to the prevention of kidney disease. Each year the KidneyMobile® visits 100 urban and rural communities throughout Illinois, offering free kidney disease screenings to more than 4,500 individuals. Added NKFI’s Lang, “Too many individuals in the United States, particularly those in the Latino and African American communities, are not properly screened for kidney disease. “As a consequence, many patients are diagnosed at a point at

which dialysis is their only treatment option. The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois is proud to help lead the nation’s prevention efforts with the KidneyMobile® – bringing free, fast screenings and follow-up education into neighborhoods where the need is most acute.” Since 2005, the KidneyMobile® has travelled the state, targeting high-risk African American and Latino communities. Before NKFI’s prevention campaign, many high-risk individuals were diagnosed in the state’s emergency rooms. At that late point in the progression of the disease, they learned that dialysis was the only option for treatment that results from undiagnosed and/or unmanaged diabetes and hypertension. More activities have been planned for upcoming months by these organizations. The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois can be contacted by calling 312.321.1500 or e-mail kidney@nkfi.org.
