Black Studies Conference at Olive-Harvey comes to an end By J. Coyden Palmer For 30 years Prof. Armstead Allen and the staff of the African American Studies Department at Olive-Harvey College on the South Side have brought some of the brightest minds in Black academia together to discuss issues relevant to the community. Well known Black scholars like Cornell West, Henry Louis Gates and the creator of the Kwanzaa holiday, Dr. Maulana Karenga have attended the conference in the past, which generally takes place in April. But the school’s president Dr. Valerie R. Roberson brought the conference to a screeching halt in a letter to Allen back in November that was anonymously sent to the Crusader’s office last week. In her letter to Allen, dated Nov. 9 2007, Roberson wrote that she decided “to take a different direction” from the one suggested by Allen and his staff and that Roberson herself would “direct a conference that is very different from the way that past conferences have been structured.” Roberson went on to write that she was uncomfortable about “using any institutional dollars” to support the conference as it had been run in the past because of
her accountability on how public funds were being used. She continued by writing that she would be planning a conference that could be used as a model for future
events and that this conference should not be considered as a transition from past African American Studies Conferences. “Please view this conference as a com-
pletely different one from past African American Studies Conferences in content, speakers and focus,” Roberson wrote. (Continued on page 3)
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH signs H.R. 1593, the Second Chance Act of 2007, during a ceremony Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The Second Chance Act aims to reduce prison populations and corrections costs by reducing the recidivism rate. The bill provides Federal funding to develop programs dealing with job training, substance abuse, and family stability, as well as for employers who hire former prisoners. James Bevel sentenced to 15 years for incest A jury convicted a major civil rights leader of incest last week after concluding that he had sex with his teenage daughter 15 years ago. The Rev. James L. Bevel, 71, a strategist to Martin Luther King Jr. and who also helped organize Minister Louis Farrakhan’s Million Man March, received a 15-year sentence for his crimes. Bevel’s daughter testified that she was repeatedly molested by Bevel beginning when she was just 6-years-old, culminating in an act of sexual intercourse in 1993 or 1994 that formed the basis of the incest charge. According to Aaralyn Mills, 29, her father is an unrepentant pedophile, who had sex with her at the age of 14. He also forced her to watch him perform intimate acts upon her own mother. Though she could not be reached for comment by the Crusader, she told the Washington Post, “The real objective would have been for my father to just apol-
ogize and to work on this with us as a family,” she said, “In life, you pretty much have a right to do what you want to do. But there are consequences to doing some things.” The civil rights leader’s public defender argued the jury should disregard evidence that Bevel led an unconventional, communal lifestyle in which he taught that it was the parents’ duty to “sexually orient” their children. After the verdict was read, and
following a prayer by a group of Black ministers, he was immediately taken into police custody. The minister, who was once married to legendary activist Diane Nash, could not be reached for comment. Rumors of Bevel’s sexual practices have circulated in the civil rights community for years but it wasn’t until an explosive confrontation by some of his adult children in 1995 that possible legal ramifications became known. Rapper KRS-One Speaks to Crane High School Students By La Risa Lynch Rapper KRS-One’s visit to Crane High School last week was part pep rally, part concert. The former front man for the 1980s rap group Boogie Down Productions used both words and songs to impart life lessons to a school on the mend from the senseless murder of a student. Crane senior, Ruben Ivy, was shot and killed in early March by a fellow student. Crane Principal Richard Smith hopes KRS-One’s appearance helps students in the healing process and sheds a positive light on a bad situation. “I just hope they listen and receive the message,” he said. KRS-One, whose real name is Kris Parker, was in town on tour, but decided to lend his voice in an effort to stop the violence after 23 public school children were killed. However, he said he didn’t come to the near west side school “to talk a whole lot of stuff.” He wanted to keep his message real since he knew it would only resonate with a handful of students. “There are only about five of y’all that is really listening, and that is the five that I want to talk to,” he said, over the chatter that echoed in the school’s packed gymnasium. “I’m going to talk to the five people who want to make something of themselves, and that is not everybody. “You have a life,” he told the students. “You may not have money, but you have a future, and in that future you can plan
your life to be whatever you want to be. Don’t let this be just a gathering here today, make this the beginning of your new life.” To drive that message home, KRS-One played his soon to be released single, Self-Construction, an upgraded version of his 1989 single Self-Destruction. The song’s message, KRS-One explained, laments building people up through education and economic development versus destroying the Black community through illiteracy and ignorance. “Self creation is the key to life. If you can create yourself, you can do and go anywhere,” said KRS-One, who didn’t want to be too preachy to the students and decided to let his music do most of the talking. “Some kids get it, but the majority, they don’t need to hear it, they need to feel it.” Crane senior Malcolm Junious, 17, got KRS-One message. He said he is motivated to work harder now so he can provide a better life for his future children. “I have seen a lot, and it is important to me, to my future to be better than what my past was,” said Junious, who plans to attend Chicago Concordia University. “I got to give my kids what I didn’t have.” Marcus Williams, 18, also a senior, hoped Crane students will be motivated by the event to move on beyond the tragedy of Ivy’s death. “Everyday is a healing for Crane, because nobody is going to totally heal. There is always
Rapper KRS-One’s visit Crane High School going to be scars here and there,” he said, noting that picking up books instead of guns is part of that healing process. During the event, KRS-One yielded the mic to students to show off their rhyming skills. Chemistry teacher Cody Thompson got in on the act and brought the students to their feet with thunderous applauds. Thompson rapped about students rising above the labels society places on them and ended the song with “We Love Crane.”
“I believe all kids are good,” said Thompson, a Columbus, Ohio native, who was one half of a conscious rap duo before landing his first teaching job at Crane. “I believe a lot of kids are lost, but all have it in them to find the way and be good,” he said, adding that KRS-One was calling for some uplifting raps. “He was asking for what I had and I gave it.” KRS-One admitted that he was a little upstaged by the teacher’s message, but he delighted in the
fact that everyone caught the spirit of the event. “The spirit that was displayed here, you can’t say that our schools are failing … and teachers are apathetic if this type of situation goes down,” said KRSOne, who offered to continue to work with Crane. “If we keep promoting that the school is bad, no one is doing nothing, then that is what we are going to get. Hopefully this cracks the situation.”
Ministers turn to prayer, fasting to push sensible gun laws By La Risa Lynch A coalition of city-wide ministers are using a different approach to pressure downstate lawmakers and the governor to pass commonsense gun legislation — prayer and fasting. Their effort came in the wake of the shooting death of another Chicago Public Schools student. Marcus Greer, 17, was the 24th Chicago Public Schools student to be killed this school year. Greer, a student at Community Christian Academy, an alternative high school on the West Side, was shot last Tuesday (April 15) about 9:30 p.m. in an apartment building in the 400 block of South Lotus. According to police, there was no clear motive for the shooting and no suspects are in custody. Area Five Detectives are investigating. The ministers, flanked by Chicago Police and CPS Chief Arne Duncan, announced their city-wide three-day prayer and 2
fasting effort last Wednesday at a news conference outside of Fellowship Baptist Church, 45th Place and Princeton Ave. The event will take place Monday, April 21 through Wednesday, April 23, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We know that prayer works,” said Bishop Larry Trotter, of Sweet Holy Spirit Church. “We need to pray for protection … (and) pray that legislators have a change of heart as it relates to gun violence. This will raise the consciousness that this is a serious issue.” Rev. Ira Acree, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church, located on the West Side, urged Gov. Rod Blagojevich also to raise that level of consciousness among downstate legislators who defeated one of several pieces of gun reform legislation. A bill limiting gun purchases to one per month fell seven votes short of passing in the Illinois House. Gun violence has replaced youths’ futures with funerals, Acree said, noting that today
Saturday, April 19, 2008
marks the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting where 32 students and professors were slain. “Youth of Chicago have been the biggest victims of this pandemic, and unless the legislature responds today by limiting the number of guns to one purchase monthly, the genocide will continue and it will escalate,” Acree said. “Summer has not yet begun, but we have already been victimized by these senseless killings.” Rev. Walter Turner, of New Spiritual Light Missionary Baptist Church, knows the impact of gun violence. His niece, Mersaides McCauley, was gunned down two weeks ago outside a north side church. Turner noted that there are five gun bills stalled in the House and those legislators must have sympathy for the heavy hearts of parents mourning the loss of their loved one. One bill, he explained, bans large capacity ammunition clips.
“Those legislators downstate feel that what goes on in Chicago isn’t important to them. But we got to let them know just like it happens here it could happen downstate at any moment,” Turner said. Duncan commended the pastors’ involvement to push sensible gun laws. He said that there is no reason for anyone to buy 10, 50 or 80 guns a month because they could be sold on the black market and “end up in neighborhoods just like this.” “I don’t know if we have to shame legislators into doing the right thing (but) pastors are good at raising their moral voice,” he said. Duncan contends the pastors’ involvement would help loosen the paralyzing grip the National Rife Association (NRA) has on downstate legislators to the point “where they can’t do anything.” “Jim Crow had a grip on the south 40 years ago, the same grip,” Duncan said. “It was changed by young folks and pas-

tors stepping up. This is about social justice (and) pastors have a voice, a vision and a moral imperative that is phenomenal.” While churches are lending their collective moral voice to change gun laws, they are also opening their doors to host after-school and recreational activities. The ministers are calling on willing churches to do the same. “During the hours of 3 to 7, children are seven times more likely to become victims of violent acts,” Rev. Roosevelt Watkins, of Bethlehem Star M.B. Church said. He added that the city experienced seven shootings on Tuesday, two of them fatal. The ministers also want a state and city partnership to bring truant officers back into the schools. Watkins noted that 80 percent of the children who were killed were truant. “If we can get students back into our schools, we realize we will lessen the violence that is taking place,” he contends.

Millions of Offenders to Get 'Second Chance' Under New Act of Congress By Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief WASHINGTON (NNPA) – U. S. Rep. Danny K. Davis (DIll.) stood behind President George Bush as he sat down, pen in hand, in front of the open folder. Among the string of witnesses beside Davis were Black Caucus members Reps. Bobby Scott (Va.), Stephanie Tubbs Jones (Ohio) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (Mich.). It was a rare, but happily unified non-partisan gathering to sign what had once appeared to be a mission-impossible for Davis. It was five years ago when he first conceived, introduced and began fighting for the Second Chance Act to deter the recidivism rate that is so disparate among Black inmates. For five years straight, the legislation failed to make it through Congress. Finally, mainly due to a Democratic Congress, the refusal of Davis and his Senate co-patron Joseph Biden (Del.) to give up, and some strong bi-partisan coalescing, the Second Chance Act, last week, was being signed by Republican President Bush. Davis is exuberant about the possible impact. “It’s a comprehensive approach to looking at what it takes to get a person back into normal life. Even more than the programs that are going to actually be funded, it is an opportunity to help Americans to change their mindsets and to help put corrections and rehabilitation as a central part of our criminal justice system,” Davis said in an interview after the signing that took
place inside the Old Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House. “There is no point in talking corrections until we do things to correct. The concept calls for beginning before a person gets out. What we need to do is the moment a person enters prison, we need to be trying to figure out what is it that we can do to keep that person from ever coming back. So, you’ve got to find out what got them there. So, whatever that was, you’ve got to work on it right then. And then you work on it consistently with the hope that you’re going to be able to prevent it from causing them to return.” Among the programs the bill will provide, Bush pointed to treatment programs for alcoholics and drug addicts. He drew warm chuckles and applause from the audience when he referred to himself, saying, “I quit drinking - and it wasn't because of a government program. It required a little more powerful force than a government program in my case.” He added, “Our government has a responsibility to help prisoners to return as contributing members of their community. But this does not mean that the government has all the answers. Some of the most important work to help ex-convicts is done outside of Washington, D.C., in faith-based communities and community-based groups. It's done on streets and small town community centers. It's done in churches and synagogues and temples and mosques,” he said. “They help addicts and users break the chains of addiction. They help former prisoners find a ride to work and a meal to eat

Black Studies Conference at Olive-Harvey comes to an end (Continued from page 1) “This new conference is planned to generate its costs and its primary goal will be to generate broad student interest and participation.” Allen said he was disappointed with Roberson’s decision and instead of having a usual full conference over three days, this year just went with a one-day brunch and forum that featured speakers, in addition to a question and answer session. The event was held on April 12th and didn’t draw the crowd the conference had in the past and didn’t get much media attention, despite one of the featured speakers being Adam Green, son of Little Rock 9 member Ernest Green. Allen said Roberson brought to his attention concerns about the The Chicago Crusader
low number of city college student and faculty presenters but said he doesn’t believe there will ever be a definitive answer given as to why the conference was stopped. “As many of you are aware, for the first time in 30 years there will not be a Black Studies Conference at Olive-Harvey,” said Prof. Allen, in a written statement to the community that has supported him. “The college leadership has envisioned for a different kind of conference that will not necessarily be designed to achieve the objectives that were born from the spirit of the Black studies mission or the substantive engagement of the conference. For those and other reasons, the climate is not conducive to hold a traditional Black Studies conference.”
The Crusade r attempted to contact Dr. Roberson for comments to this story but was told she was in meetings and was instead referred to someone in the college’s marketing department. Even those who have supported the conference in the past say it hasn’t been the same in recent years as leadership has gotten older. Allen himself said he will probably be retiring within the next three years and has been looking for newer, younger people to step in and move the conference forward. Jeremiah Washington, who lives in the Roseland community and works as an accountant, said he would often attend a few of the sessions in the past to hear the thoughts and philosophies of Black academia. He believes the event wasn’t

well advertised to the public and had the City Colleges done more to promote the conference, it may not have ended the way it did. “You could ask people if they were going to the conference and they would be like ‘what conference?’ When I told them what took place at the conference they would be interested and ask why they hadn’t been told about this before,” Washington said. “I think it was basically just a lack of marketing because the event itself was an enjoyable one.” Current Olive-Harvey students the Crusader spoke with earlier this week didn’t seem to mind the conference’s demise. Many said they didn’t attend the brunch forum and hadn’t attended any of the previous conferences. Those

who did attend said they did so because it was a requirement or extra credit for a class. Many felt the speakers often spoke in academic tones that were way over their heads and couldn’t relate to the students. As for this year’s breakfast forum, one of the hot topics discussed was the media’s influence and the political implications of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright on Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Allen said he had to make it one of the topics of the forum because it’s what everyone is talking about. “It’s the story that seems to never end and it’s also historic seeing that Obama is African American,” he said. “It just makes sense that we would have it as a main focus of our forum.” 3

TERROR IN THE SCHOOLS Apparently, based on recent events, America’s schools are under siege. In the past week alone, at least four schools in the Chicagoland area have had to close their doors because of terrorism threats. These include St. Xavier University, DuSable High School, Malcolm X College and South Suburban College. These threats are taken seriously in light of what has happened previously at Columbine, Northern Illinois University and Virginia Tech. Students lost their lives in these institutions due to “disgruntled, loner or outsider assassins.” No doubt, parents all over America are watching these incidents with great concern. Once upon a time, the major threat to safety on college campuses was beer parties and loose living by freewheeling youth unleashed for the first time on their own. The story has changed drastically in the past few years. What should be a safe haven, the halls of academia, have become another battleground in the “War on Terror.” This is an especially insidious turn of events, especially for Black Americans, because education is one of the chief passageways to accomplishment. If the notion of education becomes permanently bundled with death threats, it wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to conclude that many young people, with their parents’ encouragement, would forego education. Certainly, those with the wherewithal might turn to home schooling, but this option would not work for those with less experienced and less educated parents. So, considering this, America could be on the verge of a very real crisis. All of this is occurring while the value of the American dollar is shrinking before our very eyes. Many economists, in fact, are admitting that we are approaching, if not already in, a recession. And to exacerbate the situation, the United States, where gasoline prices are reaching astronomical heights, is having to go hat in hand to other countries, like Russia and Nigeria, for instance, for oil. Indeed, the oil crisis alone threatens to ignite another type of cold war. The crisis on American campuses is occurring with the foregoing backdrop. The crumbling economy coupled with an attack on schools can have the deleterious effect of moving more people into poverty. This does not bode well for America. It is as though there are invisible hands seeking to push the United States into a Third World status. One thing is certain – Americans have only had minimal experience with attacks at home. Pearl Harbor, the Murrah building, and the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center are just a few that come to mind. If the current spate of incidents in the schools continues, however, Americans will no longer look at the daily terrorist attacks in other countries with apathy and detachment. Perhaps this is a wake-up call for America; perhaps this is what can get us to come together in order to help correct the social ills that have been part of the American social fabric for far too long. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I am PROUD OF THAT? Dear Editor: As a 78 year old American of African descent, I feel compelled to respond to all this “much ado about nothing” when it comes to the statement that Michelle Obama made about the fact that this is the first time in her adult life that she has been proud to be an American. The country needs to hear this from the Black perspective. Long before I was born, my grandfather Joseph Burleson, owned a considerable amount of land in oil rich Texas. Because during that era, Blacks could not vote, nor could they contest anything in the courts of the United States, my grandfather’s land was STOLEN by his White neighbor. My grandfather, who was literate and better educated than my grandmother, drove to town. Seeing my grandfather leave, the covetous neighbor asked my grandmother to show him the deed to the property. He snatched it. She could not insist that he give it back, nor could she have reported this THEFT to the sheriff because of the fact that Blacks had no rights in the 1800’s. The prevailing law at that time was
he who held the deed owned the land. Do you think that is something that I am PROUD OF? Right now I should be living off the oil and gas royalties. In 1934 when my dad drove us to Texas to meet his family, when he stopped to purchase gasoline, his daughters and wife were not allowed to use the washroom. As a man it was easier for him to relieve himself in the bushes, but not for the females. We were, however, reduced to having to go in the bushes, also. Do you think I am PROUD OF THAT? In 1938 when my oldest sister went to enroll in Hyde Park High School, she was told by the counselor that she did not want to take college preparatory courses, she wanted to study domestic science. Do you think I’m PROUD OF THAT? Of course, when Beatrice Lillian Hurley-Burleson went to school the next day, that was the last time anyone thought that the Burleson girls wanted to study domestic science. When in 1943 my parents attempted to buy the 2 flat at 5338 South Kenwood, where we had lived since 1933, in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL we were told that we could not buy it because there was a restrictive covenant that said that the property was never to be sold to “Negroes.” Do you think I am

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist
Making Section 3 a Reality
Section 3 of the HUD Act (24CFR Part 135) was written in 1968 to ensure access to employment opportunities for low-income people. Literally, it was a response to the Watts Riot of 1965. Later, in 1992, it was rewritten
Harry C. Alford and strengthened as a result to the Rodney King Riot. The tenants of the law state if you receive HUD funding (housing authority, city, county, state, grantee) 30 percent of the jobs created by that funding should go to people
living in public housing facilities, recipients of Section 8 rental vouchers or people living under the poverty level. Also, 10 percent of all contracts generated from such entities must be set aside for businesses hiring such employees, Section 3 companies. If this law was enforced there would hardly be any poverty in America; unfortunately, it has not. Back in 1998, the National Black Chamber of Commerce held a convention and had the late Deloris Sutherland of HUD make a presentation on Section 3. She informed us that only four of the thousands of entities receiving HUD funding were actually in compliance with Section 3. We decided to take this on. We joined a formal complaint (1993) in Jacksonville, Fla., in which Ms. Sutherland found this city in noncompliance. The city was fined and had to settle with the Section 3 contractor. However, a very un-American thing happened. Jacksonville remained in noncompliance and kept on blocking Section 3 residents from job training and employment. The contractor re-entered the complaint and so, here we are, 15 years later with Jacksonville is about to be fined again and the
contractor about to be paid again. This city has a racist policy and is proud of it. We turned things around in Indianapolis, San Francisco, Buffalo, Charleston, Peoria, New Orleans, Louisville and other cities where we have viable local chapters. Usually it was negotiated in a civil manner and sometimes, like Peoria we had to take it to the streets. 90 percent of the current Section 3 activity in this nation is done through the local efforts of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. It is refreshing to see that in the New Orleans rebuilding all of the HUD funding activity will definitely be in compliance. One of the housing projects, BW Cooper, has started out at 62 percent of employment coming from Section 3 residents. In Louisiana and Mississippi we are going to create jobs by the thousands and drastically reduce the deep poverty that was there before. Praise the Lord! However, there are cities like Milwaukee and Detroit who seek to perpetuate their immense poverty and control the masses through despair and hopelessness. We must rise and address that feverishly. Milwaukee receives $68 million dollars a year and doesn’t create one job with it.
Its poverty is bigger than New Orleans before Katrina. Next week, the NBCC will formally put Milwaukee on notice: “Get in compliance with Section 3 in ninety days or we will sue you on behalf of the residents of public housing and others living under the poverty level and who seek employment.” Yes, it’s time to get rough and seek to cut off the HUD funding - $20 billion nationally of which is Section 3 applicable. Last year, I gave Congressional Testimony on the proposed Section 3 activity that will be applied to the Gulf Rebuilding. We were quite happy that HUD was on board with this initiative. While giving the testimony I noticed the keen interest demonstrated by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke of Brooklyn (she’s a sister). She later summoned me to her office to discuss Section 3 further and promised her district will enforce it. Not only that but that she would take the subject to Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia Velazquez, also from Brooklyn, for further processing. These two democratic Congresswomen get it! Today, H.R. 3310, “The Earning and Living Opportunities Act” has been in-
troduced by Chairwoman Nydia Velazquez. What this bill does is put teeth into Section 3. It requires that all housing authorities and community developments receiving HUD funding, as a minimum, must have 20 percent of all work hours going to Section 3 residents. These entities must report annually to the Secretary of HUD with their documentation. The Secretary of HUD must compile all reports and submit the detailed status to Congress each and every year. Those entities that do not meet the required 20 percent will be fined an equivalent of 1 percent of their HUD funding that will be used for immediate job training activity. In other words, if this were applicable today, Milwaukee would be facing a fine of $680,000 for its poverty pimping. Let’s support H.R. 3310 as it goes through Capitol Hill. Poverty is a “scab” on the American Economy. It is time for all of us to join in and end it. Section 3 is about to become a reality at long last. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Website: www.nationalbcc.org.
Slick Hillary’ does not Separate Church and State By George E Curry NNPA Columnist In recent years, Democrats have been depicted as the party lacking in spiritual principles. This was done even while Ronald Reagan, who did not attend church regularly, was in office. The irony is that this year, when both Democratic candidates freely talk about God – they even participated in a forum in Pennsylvania Sunday on the subject – their religious beliefs get marred in political mudslinging. Last week in this space, I showed how several of the most inflammatory sound bites of Rev. Jeremiah Wright were taken out of context (the column is posted on my Web site, www.georgecurry.com). Even after Obama denounced some of the rhetoric of his former minister, while not denouncing the man, “Slick Hillary” continues her attempt to use Wright’s words for political gain. “He would not have been my pastor,’’ Clinton recently told reporters. “You don’t choose your family, but you choose what church you want to attend.’’ In the brouhaha over Wright, one central point keeps getting lost – Obama credits Rev. Wright with The Chicago Crusader
leading him to Jesus Christ. The sideshow over invective language amounts to, as Jesse Jackson likes to say, majoring in the minor. Increasingly, Black pastors are defending Wright and the prophetic tradition. Strong columns have appeared in the daily press in Dallas and Seattle. It’s encouraging that more and more White ministers are also stepping up and taking on Wright’s critics. Dean J. Snyder is the senior minister at the Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington D.C., where the Clintons worshipped during the White House years. Snyder issued the following statement: “The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader whom I have heard speak a number of times. He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. He has been a vocal critic of the racism, sexism and homophobia which still tarnish the American dream. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from
George E. Curry discrimination, disadvantage, and violence. “Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr. Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize. This is a critical time in America’s history as we seek to repent of our racism. No matter which candidate prevail, let us use this time to listen again to one another and not to distort one another’s truth.” On the other side, the Internet is

carrying stories that a former pastor of the Clintons has been convicted of first-degree sexual abuse for touching a 7-year-old girl in the wrong place. Actually, the minister in question, Rev. William Procanick, 54, is a former pastor of Resurrection Assembly of God Church in Clinton, N.Y. Thus, the confusion over his being “a former Clinton pastor.” Hillary is a Methodist and not a member of the Assembly of God denomination. Inasmuch as Slick Hillary could pick her pastor, but not her relatives, what does her pastor say? The New York Sun contacted Rev. Edward Matthews, the former pastor of First United Methodist Church in Little Rock who served as the Clintons’ pastor in Arkansas during the last two years of his governorship. Hillary still maintains a membership there although she has not lived in Arkansas in 16 years. “We preachers get pretty irresponsible,” he said, referring to Wright’s most quoted sound bites. “...If we had it so say over again we probably wouldn’t say it the same way.” Even so, he said in the interview, Wight’s sermon in which he said “God Damn America” was “a totally different animal when you look at its full context.”
Saturday, April 19, 2008
He added, “I’ve come pretty close to saying in some sermons, I guess, what Jeremiah Wright did.” Matthews noted that his anti-war sermons during the Vietnam era and those of Wright today share the common theme “that America’s going to have to get its act together, you know, that if we’re going to be a leaders, we can’t just say, ‘America right or wrong.” Rev. Matthews said he heard Rev. Wright deliver a sermon in Arkansas during Black History Month. “If you are very close-minded, you would have gotten up and walked out of that. But I appreciated what he was saying.’’ Rev. Matthews said. “I wouldn’t have said it that way. I wouldn’t have been so animated.’’ He noted that he favors same-sex marriages and opposes the death penalty – positions that Clinton, oppose.” He said, “She’s disagreed with me on several things, but she remained a member of the church.” George E. Dr. Conrad Worrill sored by Pan African Roots and its Co-Director, Bob Brown. Given our continued efforts to build the Reparations Movement, I decided to revisit this press conference. The subject of the press conference was “Slavery and the Slave Trade Were and Are Crimes Against Humanity.” Those of us who work deeply in the Pan African Movement worldwide are keenly aware of the monumental contributions Brother Bob Brown has made as an organizer and researcher for over forty years “in the student, human rights, Black Power, National Liberation, Pan African, and Peace Movements.” Once again, through his research, Brother Bob has opened up new territory and possibilities for the varying strategies and tactics in the African Reparations Movement throughout the world. As co-director of Pan African 6
Roots, Brother Bob stated, as he made his presentation in the press conference, that Pan African Roots “convened this encounter with history and the future in order to directly, militantly and uncompromisingly challenge and correct at least two myths.” Myth 1: “The malicious myth that man-stealing, woman-stealing, child-stealing, and kidnapping; that piracy and privateering; that slavery and the slave-trade, especially the TransAtlantic Slave Trade; that colonialism, segregation and apartheid; that slave-like conditions and practices; that racism and racial discrimination; white supremacy; was and is acceptable; and that there is nothing we could or can do about it.” Myth 2: “The malicious myth time and the elements have destroyed all records, all evidence, all proof of who committed and or aided and abetted in the commission of these crimes; and of who was and continues to be wrongfully and unjustly enriched by and through their participation in these crimes; in this unprecedented theft of lives, of land, and of labor.” Unraveling these two myths continues to be the challenge of the Reparations Movement as we strive to enhance legal strategies, legislative strategies, and mass mobilization strategies. The research of Bob Brown over the last several years will aid the Reparations Movement in unraveling these myths. In this regard, Brother Bob revealed that Pan African Roots was requesting from the United States Government, through the Freedom of Information Act, “access to and / or copies of any and all records, including e-mails, electronic records, and computergenerated records, created and / or obtained by, or under the control of the United States Government that relate to, and / or contain information about, its role operations, and activities in facilitating and / or combating piracy and privateering, slavery, and the slave trade, especially the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, which are and were a crime against humanity.” At the United Nations World Conference Against Racism that was held in Durban, South Africa
Saturday, April 19, 2008
from August 31 to September 7, 2001, we participated in the Durban 400, a delegation made up of Africans in America activists and organizations that worked with African Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) and African Governments that helped shape a significant outcome of the conference in declaring through the Final Declaration and Programme of Action the following: “acknowledge(s) that slavery and the slave-trade, including the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, were appalling tragedies in the history of humanity not only because of their abhorrent barbarism but also in terms of their magnitude, organized nature and especially their negation of the essence of the victims… acknowledge(s) that slavery and the slave-trade are a crime against humanity and should have always been so, especially the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and are among the major sources and manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance… and invite(s) the international community members to honour the memory of the victims of these tragedies.” The Reparations Movement celebrated the victory of this language being included in the Durban Declaration, particularly since the United States, and its western allies, fought so hard against its inclusion in the final document. You may recall that the United States was so upset they called a press conference and announced their withdrawal from the conference. Little did we know at that time, what Brother Bob’s research is now revealing, that slaver and the slave trade, as far back as 1831, had been declared crimes against humanity. William Lloyd Garrison was the first person to declare slavery a crime against humanity in his inaugural edition of his Liberator Newspaper. On November 12, 1849, the Vermont Legislature passed a joint resolution declaring slavery and the slave trade a crime against humanity. And the irony of all this, as revealed by Bob Brown’s research, is that in 1860, the “Republican Party National Platform resolved that slavery and the slave trade were crimes against humanity.”
This may be the shortest article I will ever write. The topic is so serious that this nation is under attack from within by the very persons we have elected at the highest levels of government. This current U. S. President George W. Bush and both of his administrations have sought out the most coveted document in the world we live in today regardless of anywhere in the world. Currently, we are all under the gravest cloud ever and it is an attack upon every American regardless of age. It has been reported to the popu-
to our bodies. I would say that there is such a system that is being used already but it is voluntary by those who are released on their ankle bracelets. Then there is the situation regarding state driver’s licenses injected imbedded with a tracer. Then there is the fact of the war that was started that has been rooted in a lie put out by the president of the United States with 4,010 and counting. When we put this all together we can expect a revolution from the people. This president has promised to hold back federal highway funds if the
Maurice A. Clayton lation that by the year 2009 we all will be tagged by inserting tracers into our bodies in violation of the U.S. constitution. I will say to you that I don’t think they could get this violation done. They couldn’t convene federal courts to produce the warrants that would be necessary to produce the 460,000,000 warrants for every American even if it was legal or illegal. There is no president to cause this nation to even think that people will line up to get the nation to line up to let the government inject a tracer in-
governors of the states of America do not comply. Each of you now knows what is in store for these attacks upon our most basic tenant within the U. S. constitution. Now you can’t say that you don’t know that you were told. Is it strange that lawmakers haven’t stood up against this administration. God will bless America, but you help YOURSELVES. Make sure your representatives look into these violations of our CONSTITUTION.
We were honored to stand with Bob Brown in this historic press conference along with Fahima Seck, Kalonji Olusegun, Dr. Mary Rhodes Hoover, Dr. Raymond Winbush, Lee Robinson, Rasheida Weaver, Kwaku Leaks, Banbose Shango, and a host of other supporters from throughout the country. As Bob stated, “We are confident that the records requested by and through this FOIA Request
will prove, once and for all, that piracy, slavery and the slave trade, including the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, are and were illegal and prohibited, are and were recognized as a crime against humanity…”

DROP SQUAD Will somebody please go have a sit down with billionaire founder of Nigga TV (also known as BET). Bob Johnson can’t stop dissing Barack Obama. This time he has said Obama wouldnt be the presidential candidate if he were white. He then went on to say that that crazy Geraldine Ferraro only got pimped slapped for her crazy anti-Black comments about Obama was because she is white. I think Johnson is crazy because he is stripped. He got a Black face and a white heart. He’s the first human zebra. It must be a sad thing to live like a zebra, not knowing if you’re a white man in a Black man’s body or a Black man with a white man’s mind. Now, if you happen to tighten Ole Bob up—don’t say Ima incited no violence. I like zebras and so do lions.
CAREFUL, CAREFUL Ima hears some folk who are rocking the boat about the Cloudy Times sneaking a microphone in Judge Pincham’s funeral
may accidentially overturn a boat that needs to stay afloat. Stop evoking Pincham’s name before you make some folk mad.
NO PROMISES One thang Ima like about Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is that he ain’t made no promises to nobody—especially Black folk. So its no wonder why his campaign has raised $300,000,000 dollars and has only spent $150,000 with Blackowned newspapers. I bet his folk aint never bought a rib tip from a Black restaurant either. It would be interesting for an economist to go into every town where the Obama or Clinton campaign has been and analyze how those dollars were spent and with WHOM they were spent. The Great American Liar can't be trusted on anything no way--so you expect her campaign to jerk Black enterprise around. But you’d expect more from the Great American Hope—but then again, at least he’s being robotically consistent. He aint talking about empowering none of yahll. Personally, I just want to see a sister and two Black kids in the White House— and if their daddy gets them there…Hip Hip Hooray.
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME It’s so sad that a person who got wired up to trick on one of the liberators in the town is now hiding up under the closet now that a spot light has been turned on. Folk ain’t fooled by the rhetoric or the silence and sooner or later, the South Shore spy who loves

everyone and only wants to make change in that particular community will be outed and asked for accountability. Once you start snitching for those “Alphabet Boys” you always got to snitch for them. If you know who Ima talkin’ about I’d be sure to only talk to this person when they are completely naked.
ABC’s Okay, if that went over your head and I know you can’t find Gator Bradley’s phone number to interpret it for you: The term “Alphabet Boys” is code language for the FBI, CIA, DEA, IRS, NSA, ATF, etc. You G-E-T it now?
IMA SURVIVIAL TIP #2 Food is fixing to get scarce so Ima need to share some down home advice for some of yahll. If you ever run up on a chicken here’s what you do: First catch the chicken; second kill the chicken by either cutting off its head or wringing its neck; third hold the chicken upside down, reach in the mouth and cut into its juglar vein and drain out all that blood; fourth carefully pluck the feathers so as not to tear up the skin; fifth dress the chicken by removing its anus, head (if you didn’t cut it off ), intestines and all other internal organs; sixth cut off the feet (save ‘em for a pot of soup if you want); and, seventh wash that bad boy real good and cut ‘em up, season ‘em up, fry ‘em up and then you can---eat ‘em up.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) cans at that time). Do you think that was something that I should have been PROUD OF? I understood that America was trying to make up for the interring of innocent and patriotic Americans who were our enemy by association. My cousin’s barbershop was bombed in Mississippi in the 50’s because he was encouraging Black people to register to vote. His wife who had earned a Masters Degree from Northwestern University lost her position as the principal of the local school because of the voter registration activities. Is that something I should be PROUD OF? Now we get to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the pastor of the Obama family. Rev. Wright like so many religious zealots overstates many things, that many of his members do not agree with. To suggest that Senator Obama should leave the church of his choice is not only a double standard, but it is absurd. Would any of the talking heads who are so alarmed by Rev. Wright’s thoughts and speeches suggest that Catholics should abandon their faith or denounce and reject the Pope because so many priests have molested children. These children were exploited and taken advantage of and they had no choice to even know they could resist, reject and denounce. To me the situations are parallel, except for the fact that the priests behavior is a physical violation of the innocence of children who are marred for life; and the priests behavior is a crime. Rev.

Wright’s speeches are just words, that one can listen to or not, the members have a choice. Should Governor Romney denounce and reject the Mormon Church because some of their members practice polygamy? As Senator Obama has previously stated, we have entered the silly season. Barack Obama is an adult, and most importantly, he is an exceptionally intelligent adult. Like most of us adults, fortunately, we do not accept all we hear or see. If we did, the world would be more amoral, debased and perverted than the world of today is. I see all these “so called” ponderings an attempt to marginalize the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama. I cannot truly call this racism because some ignorant Blacks have also spoken disparagingly about him. I accept this as the darker side of mankind who because of their own inadequacies, they project their deficiencies on others. Barack Obama is a very rare individual, the likes of whom the world seldom sees. Like most geniuses, they are often misunderstood. They are objects of envy and jealousy. They are suspect because they soar above the average man who does not have the intellectual ability to understand the greatness of special people. They are also targets to be pulled down to the level of the mediocre who cannot stand to see an individual with deep convictions and high standards. (Continued on page 16) 7

The Payne Family of Crete is stepping up to save babies as the march for babies gives families hope March for Babies, (formerly known as WalkAmerica) the walk to save babies, is taking place on Sunday, April 27th, 2008 at Midlothian Meadows in Midlothian, Illinois. There are six March for Babies sites in the Chicagoland area: Grant Park (Chicago), Naperville River Walk (Naperville), Pottawatomie Park (St. Charles), Sunset Woods Park (Highland Park), Busse Woods (Elk Grove Village), and Midlothian Meadows (Midlothian). The walk begins at 9:00 a.m. at each location. March for Babies supports the March of Dimes fight to save babies from prema-
ture birth – the leading killer of newborns – and other serious threats to infant health. The March of Dimes is proud to announce the Payne Family as this year’s March for Babies Ambassadors for the South Suburban March for Babies site. The Paynes have three children, Kalyn, 19, Courtney, 10 and Corbitt, age 4, who was born 6 weeks premature. Corbitt weighed 5 lbs 11 oz at birth and was 18.5 inches long. “Even though he was a nice size for a preemie born 6 weeks early, he was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) shortly after birth because he had an electrolyte (potassium and calcium) imbalance and needed a feeding tube to eat,” said Rhonda Payne, “By day two it was discov-
ered that he had a thyroid problem (hypothyroidism) and he would need medication for it.” Corbitt remained in the NICU for three weeks. Now Corbitt is 4-years-old, very active, loves books and is very eager to learn. “His physical strength is so much stronger than where he was just nine months ago,” added Payne. With Illinois’ support in March for Babies, the March of Dimes conducts top-level research into causes and preventions of premature birth and birth defects. The March of Dimes also brings information and emotional support to families who have had a premature baby that was treated in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The Chicago Public Schools is recruiting 1,000 Chicago-area business and community members to participate in the second annual Teacher for a Day event, held in all Chicago public elementary and high schools throughout the city on Teacher Appreciation Day, May 6. Teacher for a Day, a joint project of the Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union, gives business and community members a better understanding of the work of CPS teachers by providing them a first-hand look into a classroom. “Teachers have an undeniable and powerful impact on our students’ lives,” said Arne Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools. “Teacher for a Day gives those who work outside the classroom a close-up look at the studentteacher relationship, and it also gives our teachers the visibility and recognition they deserve.” 10
Last year, when TFAD was a pilot program, 60 Chicago-area business and community members participated. This year, CPS aims to expand TFAD by connecting three visiting teachers with each Chicago public school. The deadline for applying is April 18. Applications can be found online at www.cps.k12.il.us/community. Unlike “Principal for a Day”— an annual CPS event that focuses on the entire school and encourages donor relationships between corporate visitors and host schools—Teacher for a Day is about exposing participants to the hard work that teachers do in their classrooms, and it also lays the foundation for a personal relationship between the guest teacher and the classroom visited. “TFAD is not for people who already are deeply involved in our schools, or for teachers and former teachers,” said Rufus Williams, President of the Chica-

go Board of Education. “We want to engage those who are unfamiliar with our schools, to show them the amazing things that our educators are doing every day.” A TFAD participant should be an employee or member of an established organization or business, an individual with the capacity to continue contact with their assigned classroom and provide assistance to the classroom during the year, and able to provide at least two references with the TFAD application. All applications will be screened and may not be accepted. During the TFAD visit, a guest teacher could co-teach a lesson prepared by the classroom teacher, observe a class, assist a class by working with groups of students on a specific project, host lunchroom duty, and/or eat lunch with the students. The TFAD day starts when the school bell rings in the morning.
Elementary school TFADs end their day with an informal lunch at the school that they visit. The lunch gives the guests, and their host teachers, an opportunity to talk about the day’s experience and how the experience influenced the visitors’ impression of what it means to be a CPS teacher. High school TFADs, to the extent possible, will be matched, by career expertise, to classrooms with a corresponding focus. For instance, chemists likely will be connected with chemistry teachers, and bankers with math or economics teachers. High School TFADs will end their day around noon with an informal lunch. Guest teachers will receive TFAD packets, which include tips and suggested activities to help them prepare for their visits. Guests also are advised to send the school a brief bio about themselves and their professional experiences.

Teacher for a Day—proposed by Chicago Teachers Union president Marilyn Stewart—is not meant to be a one-time visit, but a way for guests to stay connected with their classroom or teacher. TFADs can help their classroom teacher find a guest speaker, plan field trips to museums, zoos and other places, volunteer or connect the classroom with volunteers, make a monetary donation for a specific need of the classroom, or donate equipment or supplies or other specific in-kind needs. Questions about TFAD can be directed to the Teacher for a Day hotline, 773.553.4020, which is managed by CPS External Partnerships Office. The Chicago Public Schools is the nation’s third-largest school system. It includes more than 600 schools and serves about 409,000 students. The Chicago Crusader

WE ARE OFTEN delighted at the various and sometimes, curious names of films. Most titles tell us what the film is about. Titles like S TRE ET K ING S, PRO M NIGHT and one I look forward to reviewing—88 MINUTES. One of my favorite actors, AL PACINO, promises a worthwhile performance in whatever role he agrees to play. Pacino involved in 88 MINUTES promises to be breathtaking for at least 88 minutes. We see what is going on in our streets daily. We can only assume that STREET KINGS helps us understand who rules the streets. Tom Ludlow (KEANU REEVES), a veteran LAPD vice detective is determined to find the killer of his former partner Detective Terrence Washington (Terry Crews). Fiercely ambitious Captain Wander (FOREST WHITAKER) observes Ludlow’s pursuit of tough cases like the one where thugs kidnapped a couple of teenage girls. Before backup arrived Ludlow scatters guns so it looks as if he met with resistance and had no other choice but to spray bullets everywhere. Wander protects Ludlow because he believes he can ride Ludlow’s solving high profile cases into the chief’s office. But their days may be numbered. Internal Affairs Officer played by HUGH LAURIE is trying to bring the unit down. Ludlow’s partner, the strict by-the-book Washingon had been giving information to LAPD about Ludlow’s misbehavior, so when Washington is gunned

didn’t know what to do with herself and made a wreck of the whole evening. Well, there’s PROM NIGHT. If you like hearing the music that goes along with the quick moves or the quick movements then this is the one for you. You watch as the character prepares to turn the corner and the dark movement steps in time with the tune. The killer is always a rather strange looking fellow. So far, it’s guys who seem to go off more than girls or rather women. Don’t forget CARRIE. Obviously we love killing. IT’s just that we love the possibility of someone being destroyed while we, or someone we know scream loud and continuous. It’s a real “turn on.” IF YOU were to do your paper at college on “reactions to slasher films by general audiences.” You’d probably get a top grade, if you could carefully explain how audiences, male and female react to slasher films. One of the main exciting parts of the film is blood. Everywhere and the killer usually drags the girl (the half dead corpse) across the room, grass, or somewhere depressing, writing horror films takes a special talent. When you think of the creations of STEPHEN KING, HITCHOCK, and the narration of STERLING you realize how extraordinary the talent is. The Chicago Crusader

JUST 2 B NOSEY! Word is out that because of your comments about Tavis Smiley he is leaving the Tom Joyner Morning Show at the end of June. Rumor had it that because Tavis is not a fan of Senator Barack Obama, and because he says negative things about the Senator and his run for the Presidency, Tom’s listeners, YOU, have been reaming him a new behind entry. It really started when Senator Obama declined Tavis’ invitation to a summit he held a few months back. The Senator offered to send his very competent wife, Michelle, in his stead. Tavis turned the offer down, offended that Senator Obama would not leave the campaign trail to attend his event. Hillary Clinton accepted the invitation but she was the front runner at the time and could afford to leave the trail. Most people think that Tavis’ ego took a hit. Since that time he has been challenging Senator Obama every step in the

campaign trail. I personally have no problem with Tavis’ challenging remarks because it does give a different perspective and makes people think. It also challenges your commitment to your candidate; however, I would hope that Tavis and any other Black American leader would think back to when their opinions weren’t so noted. Tom Joyner released a statement saying that Tavis is not jealous of Senator Obama and that Tavis was hurt that people would even think that. Tom would like his listeners to show Tavis some love. Tavis released a statement saying that he is leaving the show to “clear some things off my plate so that I can devote my time and attention to some exciting and empowering projects that The Smiley Group, Inc. and other divisions of my company have underway this summer, this fall and beyond.” Tavis is a wonderful and intelligent man who has a powerful
voice. He is a devoted man who loves his community. Now if we could just get rid of the crab barrel… Toni Braxton has had to cancel her Las Vegas show at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino due to illness. Earlier this month she was hospitalized for chest pains and now the doctors are saying she needs some more tests and lots of rest. Toni has suffered from pericarditis which is a viral inflammation of the heart in the past. She is scheduled to return to the stage on May 6th. Al Green is back on the scene with a new album called “Lay It Down.” Why do we still call it an album when anyone under the age of 35 probably has never seen an album? Anyway, Al Green is scheduling a summer tour to promote the album/CD and will becoming to the Charter One Pavilion (I’m not sure which venue it

Ahmad Jamal headlines at Symphony Center April 18 NEA Jazz Master and Chicagoarea favorite Ahmad Jamal will appear in a double-bill concert with Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra Friday, April 18 at 7:30 pm in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center. Jamal’s last appearance in Chicago was at a sold-out concert at the University of Chicago’s Mandel Hall in 2006, the first jazz concert ever sponsored by that august institution. Ahmad Jamal formed his very first trio in 1950 and was engaged to play shortly thereafter at the old Pershing Hotel Lounge with sidemen Richard Davis, bassist (former student of the legendary musician “Captain” Walter Dyett at Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable High School on Chicago’s South Side), and guitarist Wilbur Wynne, also of Chicago. Bassist Israel Crosby and guitarist Ray Crawford who was later replaced by percussionist Vernell Fournier, completed the Ahmad Jamal Trio and the group enjoyed a long Chicago run at the Pershing Lounge as well as the Kitty Kat and the Top Hat Clubs, and Hyde Park’s famous Sutherland Hotel Lounge (where Duke
Ahmad Jamal Ellington and all of the major Black artists of the day performed). Later the trio “hit the road” together. The present Ahmad Jamal Trio is comprised of James Cammack on bass and Idris Muhammad on drums who, with Jamal, consistently deliver knockout performances as they tour the major clubs of the United States and large European jazz festivals. Ahmad Jamal is a native of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has been playing the piano since age three. At the age of seven he began studying with Madame Mary Cardwell Dawson who taught him until he reached his teen years. Madame Dawson was one of the early members and supporters of NANM, Inc. (National Association of Negro Musicians) and the Pittsburgh Branch is named for her. Jamal’s recording career began in 1951 with his 1948 composition Ahmad’s Blues which was used in the stage play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” And of course, all should recall Poinciana from the soundtrack of the movie “The Bridges of Madison County.” In 1994, Jamal received the National Endowment of the Art’s American Jazz Masters award and was also named a Duke Ellington Fellow at Yale University. Ahmad Jamal, a living legend in jazz, has appeared in Chicago numerous times since the 1950s but only once at Symphony Center and that was some four years ago in the SBC Jazz at Symphony Center series. Surely Chicagoans
will not have to wait another four years for his return to Symphony Center. Following intermission, the Ahmad Jamal Trio will serve as the rhythm section for the Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO) as they explore arrangements of Jamal’s greatest works. Under the direction of founder and artistic director Jeff Lindberg, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra has wowed audi-
ences since its founding in 1978 as Jazz Members Big Band. This performance will mark CJOs’s long-awaited Symphony Center debut, one not to be missed.

Dr. Kim A. Williams “It is essential people understand that heart disease is preventable, and heart healthy practices are important for longevity,” said Kim A. Williams, MD, Chair of the Board of ABC, and Professor of Medicine, Director, Nuclear Cardiology at University of Chicago. “Regular screening for blood pressure and cholesterol levels including LDL, HDL and triglycerides is especially important because people with these conditions often don’t have any symptoms. Too many of our people are dying too young because of undiagnosed and untreated heart disease.” Each day 110 Illinoisans lose their lives to cardiovascular disease,

Community Mental Health Council hosts Gospel concert featuring Chicago Mass Choir The Community Mental Health Council (The Council) is hosting the Chicago Mass Choir in a gospel celebration on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Vernon Park Church of God located at 9011 S. Stony Island Avenue, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Popular radio personality and columnist, Fiona Verde, will host the spirit-filled afternoon that is designed to uplift the entire family. “One Mission… One Direction… to Spiritual Wellness” is the theme of the celebration that will bring together parents, children and neighbors to share the musical ministry of the highly praised Chicago Mass Choir and other gospel music artists. Dr. Carl C. Bell, President and CEO of The Council, will talk briefly to the audience about the importance of the mind, body and spirit connection as a vehicle to total wellness. An internationally acclaimed psychiatrist, researcher and educator, Dr. Bell specializes in violence prevention and is very concerned about the rising incidences of youth violence in Chicago’s African Ameri-
can neighborhoods. “It’s important that we as a community wrap our arms around our youth and provide loving guidance for them. It does take a village to raise a child and now more than ever, the adults in our communities must share responsibility for all of our children,” says Dr. Bell. The Chicago Mass Choir is one of the most celebrated choirs in gospel music. Since their first recording in 1990, the Chicago Mass Choir has grown into one of the strongest and most exciting choirs on the gospel scene. They have been at
the top of the Billboard charts, have won numerous awards and been nominated for multiple Stellar and Grammy awards. Proceeds from the concert will benefit The Council’s Wellness Institute. A VIP Reception will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tickets for the reception and concert are $20. General admission tickets to the concert are $10 each. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We have not seen a phenomena like Barack Obama in many years and many generations. Like Ghandi, like Jesus, like Einstein, like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., like Mother Theresa, genetically, intellectually and spiritually, these people offer the world so much, but they are often maligned and misunderstood. Barack Obama is a Christian in the true sense of the word. A true Christian loves his fellow man unconditionally. A true Christian wants the best and tries to bring out the best in his fellow man. A true Christian wants to unite and bring the world together in peace and harmony. This is what Senator Obama stands for; but, unfortunately, he has had to get off point to answer these false charges, innuendoes, and just plain lies. We are in the presence of an angel unaware in Senator Barack Obama; and this country needs him, more than he needs us. He is the only person at this time in history who can restore respect for America with the
(Continued from page 7) worlds’ people. Because of his family background, the influence of his beloved mother who instilled great values in him, the influence of his absent father who vicariously inspired a son to go to Harvard as the father had done, the influence of a minister who brought him to an understanding of the value and meaning of Christianity, the influence of a brilliant Harvard educated wife who inspires him and keeps him grounded; he is the epitome of a citizen of the world. He is of the world because the world is in him; and this is what America needs to bring us out of the abyss to which we have sunk in the eyes of the world. Like, Michelle Obama, after living in this country all of my 78 years, loving my country and not understanding why my country has not loved me, I now for the first time in my adult life feel PROUD OF MY COUNTRY because I sense a maturing, a recognition of talent and character, and not color, and a field of candi-

Those without video access can e-mail their Fist Pump Moment for posting. Video and written entries will be voted on by website visitors, using a 5-star rating system, with prizes going to the top 10 submissions every month. Prizes include iPods, Tiger Woods ’08 EA Video Games, and Target gift cards. Details on video content and challenge rules are available at www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org. In February, the inaugural month of the contest, the 10 toprated entries were awarded prizes, with first prize going to Laura D’Asaro, 17, from Seattle. Tiger Woods calls on young people to take action and join the fist pump challenge
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Before the numerous trophies and the countless fans, a young Tiger Woods beat his father on the course for the first time. Although not recorded in any record books, this important event will always stand out as Tiger’s first Fist Pump Moment. It was moments like these that led Tiger Woods to announce the launch of his Fist Pump Challenge, an online contest designed to help young people identify and share their greatest achievements, along with Tiger’s Action Plan, a program to help children identify and achieve their goals. As part of the Challenge, Tiger has asked young people everywhere to share their very own Fist Pump Moment with the world. “It is important for young people to celebrate their accomplishments. The Fist Pump Challenge allows kids to highlight the moments in their lives that brought them closer to reaching their goals,” Tiger said. “I believe that small steps can lead to big changes.” The Chicago Crusader

The Fist Pump Challenge and Tiger’s Action Plan, which speak directly to children, are based on the guiding principals in Earl Woods book titled Start Something, and on the principals he instilled in Tiger at a young age. “Building on my father’s legacy, I am challenging children to make a difference in the world and to reach higher and farther than they ever imagined,” Woods
