Urge full funding for Second Chance Act By La Risa Lynch Organizations like Ashunti House and the Inner Voice put Illa Hawkins on the road to recovery. The Austin resident battled a 22-year heroin addiction and cycled in and out of the prison system until the courts mandated her to drug treatment. She soon found herself at Ashunti House, a licensed recovery home on the West Side. The agency was a godsend, the 49-yearold said, adding that Ashunti House helped her wage a three-year battle to regain custody of her children from the child welfare system. The group home even linked Hawkins with Inner Voice where she received job training and computer skills. “As long as we stay in the struggle to survive, it (treatment) does works,” said Hawkins, 49, who now works as an administrative assistant for Ashunti House. Hawkins said she struggled to get help when she sought treatment 14 years ago since few resources availed themselves for substance abusers. But she hopes Congressman Danny Davis’ Second Chance Act will provide the funding to create more programs to help ex-offenders reintegrate back into society. “I just pray that all the monies when they

come go to the right people to help us … because it takes compassion not just a dollar sign,” Hawkins said. In a joint show of force, Congressman Davis and Mayor Richard M. Daley held a press conference last week to urge Congress to fully fund the Second Chance Act. The act provides grants for job training, education and treatment for ex-offenders to help them successfully reintegrate back into society. President George W. Bush signed the act into law last month, after passing both houses of Congress. Davis hopes to get $165 million to fund the Second Chance Act for two years. Although Davis said that there is “good synergy” in Congress, the $12 billion spent on the Iraq War is a financial drain on this country. He hopes come November the country will have U.S. Senator Barack Obama as president and the nation out of Iraq. “It is one thing to have programs and … not have the money to fund it,” Davis said. “We got to make absolutely certain as Congress appropriate money for next year’s budget that we have the kind of money in Second Chance that we need.” Daley pledged to do his part. As part of the city’s federal agenda, Daley will direct his legislative team to beef-up Washington lobbying efforts to ensure the Act’s appro-

priation is a priority. However, Daley praised Davis for passing the bill with bipartisan support. “That’s what you want elected officials to do,” said Daley, who quipped that Springfield can learn from Davis.

“We are going to have Danny go down to Springfield and just give them some commonsense on how to pass some legislation … (since he passed the Second Chance Act) with a Republican president and Re(Continued on page 15)

But today, what North Carolina decided is that the only game that needs changing is the one in Washington, DC,” the AfricanAmerican candidate, with his beaming wife, Michelle looking on, said to over 3,000 cheering supporters Tuesday night in North Carolina State University’s Reynolds Coliseum. “I want to thank the people of North Carolina for giving us a victory in a big state,” Obama continued, “a swing state, and a state where we will compete to win if I am the Democratic nominee for President of the United

Gov. Blagojevich announces Community Investment Works $150 million comprehensive investment to create more job opportunities for youth, increase number of after school programs, rebuild deteriorating neighborhoods and increase public safety In response to a recent spike in violence on Chicago streets, Governor Rod R. neighbors are crying out to their elected leaders for help. We have to do something meaningful to turn things around – and we have to do it soon,” said Governor Blagojevich. “That’s why I reached out to organizations in the communities that have been impacted the most to find out how the state can help give young people hope and the opportunity to grow up in a safe community. By putting State support behind local efforts that are making a difference in struggling communities, we can make a big difference. I hope lawmakers will join me in putting a state strategy in place to save our youth.” The Governor is proposing $150 million in targeted investment in areas that can have the most dramatic and direct impact on young people’s choices and behaviors.

DAVID WHITAKER, President of Chicago Area Project, joined Governor Rod R. Blagojevich and other community leaders at the Martin Luther King Jr. Boys & Girls Club on the City’s west side to support the Governor’s announcement of Community Investment Works, a comprehensive state plan to help reduce violence and save young lives. nor laid out his plan to curb the tide of violence in Illinois. The Governor’s plan, called Community Investment Works, will address a range of factors contributing to youth violence, including the lack of employment opportunities, lack of safe social and recreational opportunities, and disengagement from their communities. Twenty-four Chicago Public Schools students have been killed this school year by gun violence, with still over a month to go before the school year concludes. That’s already as many as last year and a startling 300% increase over the two school years that ended in 2005 and 2006. And just on Monday (May 5) a 20 year-old student and a 3 year-old were shot in separate incidents on Chicago’s South Side. “Every week we’re losing young lives to violence. And the trend is likely to get worse as schools let out and young people have even more free time. Parents, friends and 2

The Community Investment Works plan will invest: $30 million for the Governor’s Summer Youth Employment Program to provide up to 20,000 job opportunities for kids statewide. The majority of positions will be in 39 “high need” communities. $20 million in grants to community providers for after-school and unattended youth programs that make sure kids have safe and productive options during non-school hours, including evenings. $100 million to rebuild deteriorating neighborhoods, support local businesses and stimulate job growth in at-risk communities, and equip law enforcement with advanced field technology to boost public safety. Funding for the new plan would be provided in concert with the Governor’s proposed $25 billion Illinois Works capital plan. “I applaud the Governor for developing this plan to help stop violence amongst our youth. It is our

obligation to keep kids safe. Every young person should have a safe haven where they can go to learn and grow, free from danger,” said Steve Cole, CEO of YMCA Metropolitan Chicago. “Day after day, more innocent lives are being lost to this irrational and mindless violence. Kids in our city are discovering how easy it is to pick up a gun and disengage from life,” said Rev. Michael Pfleger, St. Sabina Catholic Church. “The Governor’s plan offers sensible and concrete ways to get our children off the streets and become engaged once again in their neighborhoods. Community Investment Works is a step forward towards peace and towards healing our bleeding communities.” “This senseless violence has got to stop. We can’t change the past, but we can work hard to keep our kids alive and bring peace to our communities.” said Rev. Tolliver, St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church. “With the Governor’s new Com-

munity Investment Works plan, we can make a significant investment in our youth and begin to turn this situation around.” According to a survey of employed youth conducted by the Youth Violence Prevention Center and the University of Michigan, youth who worked were less likely to engage in risky behaviors during the times they were employed as compared to before they had employment also indicating that there were significant decreases in substance use, sexual activity, and exposure to violence. Research also shows that involvement in afterschool education or recreation activities reduce young people’s chances of getting in trouble. A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study, after controlling for a variety of factors, found that tenth graders who spent no time in school-sponsored extracurricular activities were 27 percent more likely to have been arrested than students who spent one to four hours in extracurricular activities. “We must put an end to violence by stabilizing our communities. By creating jobs for our youth and helping neighborhoods revitalize and rebuild, our children can thrive in environments that will help them lead productive and successful lives. I want to commend the Governor for launching this initiative,” said Maria Pesquiera, CEO/President of Mujeres Latina en Accion. “I think this is a good plan, because it’ll help kids stay out of trouble and save lives. We just want to be able to walk to school or get on the bus without having to worry about someone pulling out a gun,” said Mario Sendejas, an 18-year old from Little Village who attends Latino Youth Alternative School.

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

The Governor’s Community Investment Works plan would invest $30 million to support up to 20,000 jobs for young people aged 15 to 22 in the most high-risk communities throughout the state. Jobs would place youth in community development and beautification jobs such as volunteering to work with the elderly or cleaning up a dirty lot and planting a community garden. They’ll be able to earn a decent wage while they improve their own communities and learn valuable job skills. Younger teens, aged 13 and 14, who are not allowed to work could participate in a community development internship and receive a stipend at the end of the summer for school supplies. In addition, the Governor’s Community Investment Works plan would provide $20 million in grants to community providers that will offer education, recreational or other community-driven programs during non-school hours. Grants will be designed to support programs that offer: recreational evening activities such as evening basketball and “youth cafes”; mentoring and leadership programs such as partnering with professional organizations to mentor youth; educational enrichment activities such as those that have a focus on academics, arts, life skills and/or vocational skills; and expansion of existing after-school and unattended youth programs. We as responsible adults and young people must work together collectively to decrease and stem the flow of violence, particularly gun violence, among our youth. That involves a collective effort on the part of educational leaders, faith-based institution leaders, community leaders, business lead(Continued on page 9)

Residents work to plan Washington Park’s future By La Risa Lynch

A newly unveiled New Communities Program for Washington Park is hosting a series of "visioning sessions" giving residents a chance to put their thumbprint on a comprehensive redevelopment plan. The group recently held its second meeting at Church of the Good Shepherd, 5700 S. Prairie Ave. Residents brainstormed a myriad of ideas to bring the community back to the way 81-yearold Dorothy Lawson remembered when her family moved here in 1930. "The neighborhood was vibrant; a working community," she recalled, noting that area was teeming with Black businesses and several grocers like Jewel, A&P and Kroger food stores. "My family was one of the first to move in … when it was racially changing, and I have seen the drastic changes from then to now," Lawson said. The visioning sessions will allow residents, community and business leaders to find ways to improve housing, safety, increase job and retail opportunities, and address educational issues. Their suggestions will be used as a template to form a revitalization plan for the community. Initially, St. Edmund’s Redevelop Corp., spearheaded redevelopment efforts for Washington Park, but that program has been folded into the newly formed NCP/Washington Park Steering Committee. Ald. those plans (while) others have planned for us." This process, he noted, puts residents in the driver seat. "Cities don’t stand still while communities are disengaged. This process we are in Washington Park is engaging people." The meeting featured several breakout sessions. The most contentious was the one on housing. Those attending the meeting wanted to see more housing for middle-income resident where the homes are based on the Chicago area median income. Residents like Celestine Jeffries, 78, want more resources to help senior citizen stay in their homes. Condos and market-rate housing are forcing property taxes up, explained Jeffries, a Washington Park resident since 1969. "You could be a dollar under or a dollar above (the poverty line) and you can’t get nothing," she said. Cecilia Butler, president of the Washington Park Advisory Council, contends the answer to affordable housing lies within cooperative housing. She called Chatham Village on 83rd and Cottage "a perfect example that we can use throughout the city of Chicago, if we want poor people to stay in their communities." Others want efforts to preserve the area’s historic character. Harold Lucas, of the Bronzeville

Visitor Center, wants Washington Park to be part of the Black Metropolis National Heritage Trail. U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush has introduced a bill in Congress to study designating areas in Kenwood, Douglass, Woodlawn, and Oakland as a national heritage area. The area has the history to be part of that trial, Lucas explained. He said the community played a role in dismantling restrictive covenants, a redlining tool in the early 30s-40s where white homeowners refused to sale to Blacks. He noted Lorraine Hansbury’s play "A Raise in the Sun" was based on her father’s efforts to move into Washington Park. "It is in fact the southern half of the Black Belt, and we want to identify all the historical sites," Lucas said. Others believe redevelopment efforts should capitalize on the park itself to drive economic development. In its heyday, the park housed a conservatory, said Dasha HuntGolliday, founder and president of the Washington Park Area Homeowners Association. She believes a conservatory could be used as an economic engine to attract tourism by hosting weddings, proms and concerts. "We have the brand," HuntGolliday, said, adding that a conservatory could compliment DuSable Museum. "It would be an amenity that we can enjoy." Also, redevelopment efforts should focus on business expansion. Residents contend that Washington Park could brand itself as a hub for tech jobs or as a planned manufacturing district. A chamber of commerce or an incubator program should be established to foster entrepreneurialism among residents. The area lacks restaurants, cleaners, retailers and grocery stories, prime small business opportunities. In fact, 82 cent of every retail dollar is spent outside of Washington Park with pharmacies losing $4 million, clothing stores $2.8 million and restaurants $6.2 million. Scott L. Goldstein, of Teska Associates, Inc., a consulting firm working with NCP/Washington Park, said there is no magic bullet to get people to come and shop here. "You have the money here right now to support more jobs, more retail," he said. The next NCP/Washington Park visioning session will be Saturday, May 17, at St. Edmund’s Church, 6105 S. Michigan, from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. 3

OPINION

THE UNIVERSE OF MOTHERHOOD Motherhood is a universal concept. Most people can relate to mothers and mothering, some good and some bad. But the overarching concept of “mother” is that of nurturing, that is the reason for being. When a woman carries progeny in her womb, it is something special. For nine months, give or take, the mother provides the best possible home for the growing fetus. Think on this, after birth, the mother ensures the survival of her child who is in no way prepared to take care of itself. Infanthood is the most vulnerable of life stages, and mothers usually provide the psychic cushion that helps us through those early times. And interestingly, even though we may not remember the nurturing, the hugs, the kisses, they provide an emotional backdrop for us well into adulthood. These experiences reside in the subconscious sphere. In fact, there have been studies that have shown that infants who are not nurtured often demonstrate a “failure to thrive.” Because of this, a mother’s love, the unconditional kind, is very, very important. It would be interesting to do a study about the nurturing past of some of the most destructive people who have walked the planet. For example, the infamous Adolph Hitler, dictator/chancellor of Germany during World War II had a mother. At one time, she no doubt nursed him, if not by breastfeeding, certainly with a bottle. It’s possible that she looked into his little eyes without ever imagining the monster that he would become. This is true for all types of people that have chosen to live their lives on a less than righteous path. But they all had mothers who had to nurture them at some point, if even for a very brief period. Today, there is a lot of pain being experienced by mothers, especially some of those in the African American community. We have recently experienced a spate of violence wherein people are killing people at a seeming increased pace. Within the past month, more than 40 people have been shot or stabbed, with many of them dying. A lot of the victims were youthful, in fact, in the African American community, youth are tending to be an endangered species. And for every youth that loses his or her life, there is usually a mother somewhere mourning. Mothers go through a lot for their children. Selfish people have been seen to totally turn their lives around once they have given birth. There is something innate, seemingly, wherein mothers have a protective urge that will often cause them to sacrifice their own lives for the sake of their children. This is motherhood at its finest. While we’re at it, we must not forget the surrogate mothers who pick up the slack when birth mothers are either unwilling or unable to take care of their offspring. They also deserve accolades on this special day set aside for mothers. With this said, the Crusader wishes all mothers a very happy Mothers Day! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

TAXES!!! Dear Editor:

As a taxpayer, community leader, and grandparent, I want to voice my strong support for the Chicago Children’s Museum relocation to Daley Bicentennial Plaza in Grant Park. Centers for New Horizons provides early care and education to over 1,700 children every day. We use the Chicago Children’s Museum regularly for some of our programming, and this new location would be more accessible to public transportation and more of the tourist visits. The Daley Bicentennial Plaza is also more environmentally sound and better equipped to serve all Chicagoans. Grant Park belongs to all the people of Chicago, not a select few. The addition of the Chicago Children’s Museum to this area would provide a year-round family learning resource and also add tremendous value to the entire city of Chicago. Sincerely, Sokoni Karanja, Ph.D. President & CEO Centers for New Horizons

To the Editor: While today’s (April 28, 2008) Supreme Court decision upholding an Indiana law requiring citizens to possess government-issued photo ID’s to vote surprised few observers, it certainly disappointed those of us who have long championed voting rights for poor, minority and elderly Americans. The deliberations ignored the reality of election administration: anyone registering to vote must already prove their identity with a birth certificate, passport or similar ID. Indeed, the Indiana law has already disenfranchised citizens with a long history of voting. Justified with a nod and a wink as a fraud-fighting measure, it was truly designed to make it more difficult for the least privileged to cast ballots. And with the Supreme Court’s

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

The Textile Industry and China: Pimping All Over the World By Harry C. Alford I have had the opportunity to work for three corporate giants. Procter & Gamble (Packaged Soap & Detergent Division) based its strategy on marketing and brand development. Mothers would cook with Crisco, Duncan Hines and wash with Tide and Ivory for the simple reason that their mother did. John-

Harry C. Alford son & Johnson (Baby Products Division) relied on research and development. Their products gave an impression of reliability because they had a reputation to

present only the best to the consumer. The Hanes Hosiery Division of the Sarah Lee Corporation was totally different. It relied on its production. Their hosiery was the best due to the raw materials and synthetics combination mixed and produced by the best machinery in the world. Retailers would make 2 – 3 cents on a dollar on P&G soap products but the volume was tremendous. We would emphasize that you take dollars to the bank not percents. J&J products would give them 8 – 9 cents on the dollar and we would stress you make the same amount of money for less investment. Hanes and the rest of the textile industry would make an astronomical amount of money on their product, 40 – 45 percent. Still they would suggest a retail price that would give the retailer a whopping 43 – 47 percent mark up. They and their retailers make “stupid money”. As time went on the textile industry and its retailers have joined hands for more greed and lust for profits. High tech machinery replaced Hanes’ workforce. It went from 30,000 plant

workers to 6,000 in a fifteen year period. It got worse. NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and other trade agreements sent the textile industry south of the border. What’s left is filled with immigrant workers who are nonunion and less demanding on wages. High tech inexpensive machinery and low wages and taxes aren’t enough for this insatiable high profit industry. They are constantly seeking the lowest possible costs for the highest amount of profit regardless of humanity and morals. I knew the fix was in when I attended my first African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) meeting. Ninety percent of the faces attending were white and they represented the textile and apparel industry. The authors of the bill are two white congressmen from white districts and it soon became obvious they didn’t care about Africa. This whole deal was about increasing profits. It was my first trip to Kenya when I saw what they were all up to. There was a facility managed by people from India. Its ownership was in the name of the Presi-

dent’s sister (front company). To our shock all of the raw material was coming from China. Piles and piles of cotton stamped “Product of China”. They had a couple of hundred sisters working the sewing machines making clothes. All of the finished product would state “Made in Kenya”. But all Kenyan citizens got was the $60 a month salaries that the sisters received. The big bucks were going to China and the low cost goods would end up in Wal Mart, Target, JC Penney’s, etc. It would come to the US duty and tariff free and not be charged against the trade imbalance we have with China. Meanwhile the cotton farmers of Kenya were protesting that they were being starved out by their own country and the United States. They are correct. The textile production in Nigeria has reduced its workforce by 80 percent due to this scheme. Thus, from the slave labor of China to the manipulation of Asian engineers and adverse US legislation the textile industry is making a “killing” for itself and its retailers – at the cost of Africa. Greed has no end. The textile industry is set to take advantage

of the CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) trade deal. The textile industry has found its “Black Guy” to pull the trigger for them just like he did for the formal extension of the above hustle. They are about to put an amendment on CAFTA that will allow China to run its raw material into Haiti. The textile industry will set up sweat shops and produce very cheap product for entry into the United States duty and tariff free. There is no real benefit to Haiti. This is going to devastate the Dominican Republic (80 percent Black) and other CAFTA nations such as Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador all of which have high Black populations. The Black congressman and the textile industry don’t seem to care. If Wal Mart is happy, then they are happy too. We have got to become smarter and get organized to fight this 21st century colonialism.

erage. Ironically I remember praying that somehow this group directed by Rev. Dr. Iva Carruthers and composed of some of the most dedicated and progressive preachers and theologians in the country would gain more public exposure. I soon found there is much truth to the old saying, “Be careful what you pray for because God may not come the way you want Him but when He comes He is right on time.” So when the recent controversy around Wright erupted, Sylvia Smith, the president of the press club, asked if I could get Wright as a speaker, the man I had been suggesting even before she became president. I was delighted because the Samuel Proctor Conference was again coming to Washington for its legislative conference and Wright could now bring the social justice message with its promise of equality and inclusion to an international level. That was my only motivation. I have been attacked for my role in all this. What is fueling it is because I stated publicly that I voted for Sen. Clinton in the primary as my way of thanking her for how she stood up for the poor when she had a chance. Few have written that I also publicly criti-

cized the Senator for not firing Geraldine Ferraro when she insinuated that Senator Obama was an “affirmative action” presidential candidate. Few have written that in lectures and sermons I have spoken highly of Senator Obama and how his message of hope offers a great opportunity to bring a divided nation together. I believe in the First Amendment. I believe that people of different views should have a voice as citizens. I believe that pastors, preachers and prophets should NOT go to the rulers and politicians and ask permission from them to speak truth to power or to speak the Word that God places in their heart. If they did that, most of the churches, synagogues and mosques in America would shut down. As an editorial board member at USA TODAY for 13 years, I helped develop the Opinion Page. I was a door opener to let people in, not a doorkeeper to shut people out. I fought hard to bring upon those pages the views of the marginalized, left out, overlooked and invisible into the mix with the rich, powerful and the establishment figures. In addition, I constantly fought for the media to hire more Blacks as columnists, editors and to also hire more religion writers. I dare

say if there were writers and journalists armed with the knowledge of how the Black church has provided leadership to this nation— not by shutting up, but by challenging, rebuking and reconciling— people of faith would see the mainstream media in a more positive light. Ironically, some of the same Black journalists who are criticizing me now as I continue to fight for inclusion and diversity, are there as a result of myself and others fighting the corporate media to hire them. Shortly before the press club breakfast, I helped organized a press luncheon for Secretary Jackson of HUD and worked very hard to make it a sold out event, as was the Wright event. I am not a Republican. Two weeks before the Wright event I helped organize a press luncheon for LaRaza, a Hispanic organization. I am not Hispanic. But nevertheless I read that I am part of some nefarious plot against Obama. Ironically, as I preached and made speeches about the prophetic vision of Obama that will have a longer positive effect on politics in America than these silly arguments, I was accused by some of being an Obama surrogate. I am neither an Obama surro(Continued on page 9)

My Motive for Wright Breakfast

By Dr. Barbara Reynolds NNPA Religion Columnist

As a member of the speakers’ committee of the National Press Club, upon the invitation of the Club President Sylvia Smith, I helped organize the press breakfast that featured Pastor Jeremiah Wright. Since my role - and my motive - have been questioned by some commentators, bloggers, columnists and journalists, I feel I owe my readers an honest answer. I began suggesting Pastor Jeremiah Wright as a speaker about three years ago when I met him at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference that was convening in Washington, DC. At that conference, Sen. Barack Obama was the morning keynote speaker and I was the afternoon keynote speaker. After seeing that Wright and Obama had such powerful, but distinct social justice messages to lift people up, I wondered why the public had not heard more from this Conference of which Wright was the founder. As a minister, I served as a commissioner on the Conference’s Truth and Justice Hearings on Katrina. Sen. Hillary Clinton testified at the hearings and attacked the Bush administration for its negligence and Sen. Obama also

Dr. Barbara Reynolds addressed the group in Washington and encouraged its mission. I saw the Conference message as a part of the legacy of the Black Church that was either being drowned out by the conservative evangelicals or the prosperity preachers. For two years Wright and the Conference took their message to Washington and the National Press Club. Many eloquent and renown theologians - including Pastors Wright, James Forbes, Freddie Haynes, Cynthia Hale and others spoke. One of the revelations of which I am now firmly aware, is that although I physically look like my father, the major attributes of my personality, disposition, and attitude reflect the profound personality of my mother, Anna Belle. Therefore, on this Mother’s Day, I want to pay tribute to my own

Dr. Conrad Worrill mother who reflects the story of many great Black Mothers world wide. This is my tribute, remembering the life of Anna Belle Gravenberg Worrill. Anna Belle Gravenberg Worrill was born May 9, 1919 to August and Lilly Gravenberg in Jeanerette, Louisiana. Anna Belle, who had eight brothers and one sister, was affectionately called “Annie” by close family members. In 1920, a pneumonia epidemic took the lives of over two hundred people in Jeanerette. Her parents were among the casualties leaving Anna Belle, at the tender age of seven months, and her siblings orphaned. For a brief time, Anna Belle and her older sister Minola lived at a Catholic Convent. During their stay in the convent, Minola, who was like a mother to Annie, greatly impressed the nuns with her devotion to her younger sister. In the early 1920s, Anna Belle, Minola, and their older brother, 6

Conrad, moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to live with their Aunt Maggie Matthews. During the early 1930s they relocated to Los Angeles, California to reside with their brother Conrad and his wife. In Los Angeles, Anna Belle attended public school. She later settled with Lillian Piersaul and her husband in Pasadena, California where she attended Washington Junior High School and Pasadena High School. During this period, Anna Belle’s interests in the arts and music became apparent. She began to study ballet and to receive vocal training. Her participation in the choir at the First A.M.E. Church in Pasadena showcased her gift as a vocalist, and she was often selected to solo. At this time she met Walter Worrill, another member of the church choir. They courted and married in September 1940. Anna Belle attended Pasadena Junior College where she continued to receive vocal training and study music. She was often requested to sing at major events in the Los Angeles County area at churches, weddings, and funerals. Anna Belle and Walter’s first child, born on August 15, 1941, was a son they named Conrad Walter Worrill (Conrad in honor of her older brother and Walter for his father). Her passion for working with children led her to secure a teaching position at the Pacific Oaks Nursery School in Pasadena where she later enrolled Conrad. Anna Belle was honored to be selected to sing at the wedding of baseball legend, Jackie Robinson in 1946. In the late 1940s, Annie became a member of the renowned Pasadena Civic Chorus that presented major concerts throughout the city and surrounding area. Her love for children, music, and the arts reflected her passion for life and made a great impression on those with whom she came into contact. During the 1940s, Anna Belle assisted her husband Walter with his work in the YMCA Movement. In 1950, the YMCA transferred Walter to Chicago, Illinois. Big city life was challenging for the Worrill family. Upon their arrival in Chicago, the couple resided at the YMCA Hotel located at 826 South Wabash. The challenges for housing in Chicago at that time were quite severe. Fortunately, on their train trip from California to

Chicago they befriended a waiter, Mr. Anthony, who owned a building at 5640 South Maryland. He had a vacancy on the second floor and allowed them to lease the apartment. On April 29, 1951 a second son, Oscar William Worrill, named in honor of his grandfather, was born to Anna Belle and Walter. Anna Belle quickly became involved in the choir at St. Mark’s Methodist Church. She was most influential in organizing the Handel’s Messiah concert, which became an annual Christmas season event and is still an annual event at St. Mark’s. She was a member of the Chicago Music Association and protégé to the late Theodore Charles Stone. Anna Belle was the family representative to welcome the neighbors, who included the popular disc jockey, Al Benson; the distinguished sociologist and anthropologist, St. Clair Drake; the Minor family who lived across the street; and many others living in the west Hyde Park community. Her dynamic personality and spiritual gift enabled her to easily interact with all people. She participated in the PTA at Ray, Neil, Dixon, Hyde Park High, and Calumet High Schools where her sons Conrad and Oscar attended. As a result of her volunteerism, she was made a lifetime member of the National PTA. She was an aggressive parent advocate, not only for her sons but for all children. She tirelessly worked to ensure that they received everything to which they were entitled. Anna Belle eventually took a job as an administrative clerk at the University of Chicago where she worked in the Bursar’s Office for more than fifteen years. She became known for helping students negotiate their financial aid payments to the university, and she voluntarily assisted many students to make sure that their financial aid needs were met. In 1957, the Worrill family purchased a home at 8450 South Prairie in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood. There the family experienced “white flight” first hand. The day they moved into their new home several white families were moving out. Anna Belle became well known for her neighborliness and concern for members of the community. When Ernest “Stu” Collins, an African American entrepreneur, opened a supermarket at 79th and

For years, Anna Belle would walk from her home at 84th and Prairie to 79th and Calumet and back with groceries purchased from the Black-owned grocery. She was very proud of her support for Black-owned businesses and instilled those values in her children. In 1970, Walter took a new position with the YMCA. Anna Belle and Walter moved from Chicago to Pennlyn, Pennsylvania. It was during this period that Anna Belle returned to her Catholic faith and attended a local Catholic church in Pennlyn on a regular basis. After Walter and Anna Belle divorced in the late 1970s, Anna Belle remained in Pennlyn and secured a position working in a nursing home. In 1989, her son, Oscar assisted her in moving back to Chicago so she could be close to her sons, other family members, and friends. With the support of her sons, Oscar and Conrad, Anna Belle lived a full life in Chicago. Anna Belle loved her family: her sister, brothers, sons, nieces, nephews, in-laws, grand and great grandchildren. She often spent quality time with them, especially her grandchildren. In the final year of her life, Anna Belle lived in the Renaissance Senior Citizen Residence in the South Shore neighborhood. Though her eyesight began to fail, she was the life of the party among the elders in her new home. And all of the staff loved Anna Belle as well. (Continued on page 7)

nation on the planet earth suffers the distinction of engaging in the art of murder. There seems to be no end to the blood letting anytime soon and if anything, there will be more. America has turned on itself, families are slaughtering each other behind closed doors, often times even the babies are being killed along with the mothers/wives, etc. What madness have we wandered into? The children have begun to follow in the footsteps of their adults and mothers are crying all over the nation in large cities, small towns, rural America, in church, out in front of churches, synagogues, etc. The common trend is women in black with tears flowing down their young and old faces and for what? There is a yearly body count from city to city, from state to state, of the slaughter and the yearly count is given out by the FBI. With law-enforcement pushing hard to stop the killing along with police who jump on the bandwagon to look like they care while mothers still cry aloud and in private; as well as in public. I pray that mothers across America and around the world where their men practice warfare as a way of life along with the death as stable. I pray that by this time next year mothers will be crying much less, be filled with laughter and the world will be a better place. God bless America, and Happy Mother’s Day. The Chicago Crusader

Come to thank of it, she ain’t rightly paid for that emergency press and curl I gave her after Hurricane Katrina. As for they Daddy, at least he’ll be in shape when he come off that involuntary vacation. Now for your question about that boy Obama, I can’t rightly say I know what to do. At one point Ima called Kenya and summoned all his African relatives to Chicago, but 316 of them showed up looking hungry and confused so I put them on an Amtrak and Lawd knows where they be now. I hope them folk from Fox don’t find them, because it’ll be all over for the son of white lady and an African transfer student who speaks well and eats arugula. That’s a type of lettuce for you Negroes on 111th Street. I tried dressing up like to look like Obama’s long lost granny on his daddy’s mama’s side, but when they saw that copy of Chairman Mao’s little red book in my hand bag the gig was up. Way Obama figured it, if he don’t ask them Negros nothing, he don’t owe them nothing neither—especially jobs, resources and money. They didn’t make him after all, the University of Chicago did—and they got a lot invested in the skinny kid with a racist grandmamma. Ain’t it funny that the boy thankin’ he’s the color gray, while the whole wide world celebrating him because he’s got more than the one drop of Negro blood? Race neutrality comes back to haunt you every time. The more you run from yo’ cousins Leroy and ‘em, the more fried chicken bones and watermelon rinds gonna wind up at yo’ door step. Problem with playing it safe in the middle is that when you are attacked because you got that Negro blood, you can’t properly defend yourself. See because the moment you acknowledge there is a “white America and a Black America” then your whole rise to DNC glory goes out the door with that stuff in a slop jar. Shouldn’t surprise nobody in the town that Barack reacted the way he done, because you don’t really know nothing ‘bout him—except his wife looks like she uses mediumstrength perm and she looks cute in a red dress, like all sisters do—except for Trina, who looks like Kool Aid coming at you when she got her’s on. I think some of you lower class Negroes that Bill Cosby talked about is behind all of this any way. Don’t yahll wanna eat something else besides hog maws, giblets and corn pone? Don’t you want a real glass instead of drinking out of mason jars all your life? Ima been trying brie and sipping herbal tea with her pinky finger every time Obama go on Meet the Press. I’ve even started using my “ing’s” when I’m around melanin-challenged people. I want to have them good manners when he make it to the White House. I even promise not to steal the silverware—-okay I’m lying because I hear that stuff is real. Unless Fox and friends (that includes the brown ones) reveal Obama’s mama had a membership in the KKK, that child is going to get that nomination—that is if Bill and his nutty wife don’t have the boy “Fostered.” You think white folks fight dirty, wait until he takes on that crippled face John McCain and his tightfaced, billionaire, recoveringdrug addict wife. A bunch of Negro preachers got put back in the field by DUH mayor when he didn’t invite them to his private meeting to discuss why negroes shooting each other. The list is longer than an elephant’s small intestine that includes the names of prominent Black preachers who were not invited. That’s nothing new except that these same preachers are the first ones who jump up bowing and scraping every time Daley come around. They just knew their massa was gonna pat them on the head and call them in the room. Instead he called Charles Jenkins and a handful of others and dubbed them the new plantation overseers. I bet one ugly, big lip preacher cried that night.

SOUND THE ALARM

There’s a piece of tumbleweed blowing through the state house. We hear top officials in the governor’s campaign are jumping ship like rats on the Titanic. Well they only have the Governor BlackJE—whatever’s father-in-law to blame because he was the one who sort of started this whole mess. Remember that wacky Ald. Mell who jumped on a table the night Harold died? Well, he’s the same idiot who ran to the feds and said his son-in-law the governor was giving out jobs and other favors for contributions only to take it all back, pretend he was lying or that he was off his meds. Too late! The damage was done and the fire was sparked. Now only loyal Hispanics and Negroes are left standing around trying to

Ima woke up to a bunch of alarm clocks going off in the Negro community. Unfortunately, for those who refuse to wake up, it won’t do no good. The alarm clock been going off since they stole your Black mama and stole your Black daddy and brought them here in chains. Dr. King said it this way in the last speech he would give before his group nine months before his murder: “The tendency to ignore the Negro's contribution to American

life and strip him of his personhood is as old as the earliest history books and as contemporary as the morning's newspaper. To offset this cultural homicide, the Negro must rise up with an affirmation of his own Olympian manhood. Any movement for the Negro's freedom that overlooks this necessity is only waiting to be buried. As long as the mind is enslaved, the body can never be free. Psychological freedom, a firm sense of self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night of physical slavery. No Lincolnian Emancipation Proclamation, no Johnsonian civil rights bill can totally bring this kind of freedom. The Negro will only be free when he reaches down to the inner depths of his own being and signs with the pen and ink of assertive manhood his own emancipation proclamation. And with a spirit straining toward true self-esteem, the Negro must boldly throw off the manacles of self-abnegation and say to himself and to the world, "I am somebody. I am a person. I am a man with dignity and honor. I have a rich and noble history, however painful and exploited that history has been. Yes, I was a slave through my foreparents, and now I’m not ashamed of that. I'm ashamed of the people who were so sinful to make me a slave." Yes, yes, we must stand up and say, "I'm black, but I'm Black and beautiful." This self-affirmation is the Black man's need, made compelling by the white man's crimes against him.”

Anna Belle was blessed in the last months of her life to receive a visit from her older sister, Minola. Minola, who does not fly, her daughter Gail, and her goddaughter Tracey drove across country from Los Angeles to Chicago in a Winnebago motor home so she could spend time with her baby sister. Annie and Minola were able to visit with their brother Columbus Gravenberg, who lived in the western suburbs of Chicago. This was a well-timed reunion for shortly after their visit Columbus made his

Exelon Energizes Its Green Commitment with 12 Environmental Service Projects Exelon volunteers work throughout city, suburbs for Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, hundreds of employees across the Exelon family of companies participated in a dozen volunteer service projects throughout Chicago-land. These environmentally focused volunteer projects were staffed by hundreds of volunteers from Exelon, a Chicago-based company and the nation’s largest utility and nuclear plant operator, in honor of Earth Day. The service projects are part of Exelon’s commitment to address climate change by reducing, displacing

or offsetting the equivalent of its current annual emissions - 12 tons - by 2020. “I am proud that our employees have taken action in generating a green footprint in the communities where we work and live,” said John W. Rowe, Exelon chairman, president and CEO. “Our volunteers and their projects reflect Exelon’s commitment to lead the local response to global climate change.” This year’s service projects kicked off with Earth Day activities on Saturday, April 19 and concluded May 3. The projects staffed by Exelon volunteers included: “Save the Trees” Earth Day

Ellis Center in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood on Friday, May 2 Restoration of Prairielands at Wolf Road Nature Preserve in Westchester on Saturday, May 3 These projects also build on a voluntary goal set in 2005 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by eight percent from 2001 levels by the end of 2008. Exelon is on track to meet this goal through various programs that include increasing use of hybrid vehicles and biodiesel fuel, reducing the consumption of electricity in office buildings, and increasing renewable energy generation. Exelon’s environmental com-

ers, and law enforcement agencies,” said Ronald Holt, a Chicago Police Officer who lost his son to gun violence a year ago. “We need to teach our good behaving, law-abiding children the idea of peer-to-peer collaboration with at-risk youth who are prone to violence, to draw them away from gangs, guns, drugs, and violence.” Community Investment Works plan invests $100 million total in revitalization, economic development and public safety. Of the $100 million, half will be used for a competitive grant program through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to fund community-based redevelopment or renewal projects that put people to work and restore neighborhood integrity. Eligible projects must be in economically distressed or high crime area and will include efforts like vacant building acquisition by not-forprofit organizations, vacant land redevelopment, community center expansion or restoration,

recreation facilities and mixeduse developments. Another $40 million will be directed to the proposed Illinois Community Assets Fund (under DCEO) to support local businesses or ventures that will create jobs. Funding will be provided as grants to local community development groups, financial institutions and directly to businesses or communities that can demonstrate immediate job growth from projects. Because the funding comes in the form of grants, organizations can take more risk on programs for their communities. The remaining $10 million in rebuilding funds will be used to support a competitive grant program to help local police departments buy equipment that can help officers be more effective in the field. People who want more information on the Community Investment Works plan, or who want to join the effort to pass a comprehensive anti-violence plan should visit www.illinois.gov/community.

The NEW Four-One-One

ENTERTAINMENT

By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor A GREAT TIME!: A special “Thank You” shout-out to Deborah Brown, Community Relations Director for NBC 5 Chicago for making sure that I was “front & center” when my FAVORITE talk show, “ELLEN” came to Chicago last weekend to tape a special show. Ellen DeGeneres has got to be the nicest person who is currently hosting a talk show on daytime television and her kindness also is apparent in everyone that work’s for her and her show. Even though it was a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon, the “Ellen” staff made sure that everyone of the 1400 people who had tickets for the show (and the more than 6,000 who turned up and lined the blocks surrounding NBC Tower and Michigan Avenue who DID NOT have tickets) were treated very kindly. They passed out free rain poncho’s and water to the guests, allowed people to leave the waiting area to go and get Ellen DeGeneres food and coffee if they felt the need, and just kept everyone in a good and upbeat mood while they waited for the taping to begin. Not once did I see any member of Ellen’s staff exhibit the slightest bit of “attitude” to anyone that was there for the show. (HINT: Some of the other shows that tape in Chicago should take a clue from the Ellen staff!) The show was great and featured another one of my favorites, Robin Williams who had the entire audience in “stitches” during not only the “on-air” segments, but also the breaks in between each segment. Even his honor, Mayor Richard M. Daley and his wife Maggie stayed around for the entire taping after The Mayor introduced Ellen at the top of the show and talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey participated in a taped segment (and provided her favorite pizza from Pizano’s for the entire audience). When you watch the show on television, you see that Ellen loves to dance. Well, not only does she dance but her entire staff and crew including the cameramen, producers, assistants and everyone else involved in the show dances and convinces the audience to dance during every available opportunity. Again, THANKS Ellen and Deborah for a great experience. Come back real soon!

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE

Nim’s Island By Anne Blair

This is a magnificent story of a girl living on an island with her father. Her imagination fuels the fire that keeps the story alive. NIM’S ISLAND is the best in family entertainment. The young NIM is able to live alone when her dad, Jack, a researcher, determined to document environment changes set out to leave NIM alone with her lizard, Fred, her seal and pelican, along with the volcano and the relationship she has with storyteller, adventurer, Alex Rover, a writer who is locked in her home suffering from agoraphobia—a fear of leaving her home. JODIE FOSTER who portrays Alexandria writes books under the name of adventurer Alex Rover, who is an apparition in her mind, is unable to leave her home. She is terrified of spiders and the outside until she receives a distress message from Nim that she has fallen from the side of a volcano in response to Alex Rover request that she explain her situation. Churches statewide launch 2nd Annual Pin-a-Sister Sunday Breast Cancer Awareness effort for Mother’s Day 2008 Churches and cathedrals across the state of Illinois are joining the effort to make women of color more aware of their greater risk of death from breast cancer. According to recent studies, African-American and Latina women are less likely to develop breast cancer but are 40% more likely to die from the disease. That alarming disparity has prompted Access Community Health Network (ACCESS) to reach out to churches and cathedrals across the state to urge participation in a massive awareness campaign targeted for Mother’s Day, May 11th. The “Pin-a-Sister Sunday” campaign is in its second year of using Mother’s Day to heighten breast cancer awareness in the faith community. ACCESS Chief Executive Officer Donna Thompson says this awareness campaign must go where the most women at the greatest risk can be found. “While many women of all races support the breast cancer aware-

ness run on Mother’s Day, the majority of African-American and Latina women are in church and we can’t afford for them to miss this important message.” Many women are unaware that they can be screened at little or no cost through the Stand Against Cancer program and the State of Illinois’ Breast and Cervical Cancer Program for low-income and uninsured women. Pin-a-Sister Sunday seeks to make women aware of the need for screening and to let them know that help is available even to those who are uninsured. “Pin-a-Sister Sunday” kick-off breakfasts were held last week on Chicago’s West and South Sides and in several locations in Springfield, Rockford, Decatur and Peoria. Last year, almost 70,000 people in 50 Chicago-area churches participated in the campaign. This year, the goal is to reach more than 200,000 women in the more than 300 churches that have been invited to join the

effort. “Pin-a-Sister Sunday” is the first campaign of its kind to unite all of the major anti-cancer advocates behind a program targeted to a single at-risk constituency. Joining forces with the Stand Against Cancer program and ACCESS are the Chicagoland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Y-Me, The American Cancer Society, The Illinois Department of Public Health and The Silver Lining Foundation. To urge participation in the “Pin-a-Sister Sunday” breast cancer awareness drive, the coalition is sponsoring a public awareness campaign featuring prominent women from radio, television and the civic community on billboards, and in public service announcements on radio and television over the next month. For information on how your church can participate in “Pin-a-Sister Sunday,” call 1-888- S.A.C. H.O.P.E.

Those returning from prisons want to be productive citizens, but many ex-offenders return to society with no bankable job or vocational skills, he added. “We probably shouldn’t be surprised that half of them are re-arrested within three years,” Daley said. “We simply have to break that cycle if we expect our crime rate to continue to fall. And that means we have to help these individuals rebuild their lives, connect with their families, find meaningful employment and become productive members of society.” To that end, Daley recently signed an executive order forbidding discrimination against individuals with criminal backgrounds seeking city employment. Davis also implored busi-

nesses to create opportunities to hire ex-offenders. “It does not do a lot of good to go through a program, to do everything that society says you ought to do and then be unable to get a job,” he said. Beginning in 2009, nonprofits, faith-based organizations and universities and colleges can directly apply for the federal funding. Also, individual states can apply for community development block grants to fund their own re-entry programs or disperse those funds to community groups. The Second Chance Act funds programs that provide treatment as an alternative to prison, family-based substance treatment, job placement and training and prisoner reentry research. Meanwhile, Pastor Wright and his family are receiving death threats and his church bomb threats. This is very sad. I do not believe that tearing down and hating on either Barack or Clinton or Wright is honorable. If this level of hate continues, it will only spell disaster for our nation. At this writing, Sen. Obama appears favored to be the nominee. If he prevails, I will most certainly support him and vote for him in the general election. HEALTH “This is Our Story: Learning, Loving and Living Well with Diabetes,” an original play, to increase diabetes awareness and education Bayer Diabetes Care announces 2007 winner of $100,000 Bayer Dream Fund™ Contest Bayer Diabetes Care announced that Wendy Coleman, Ph.D., director of Theater Ensemble and Speech at Albany State University in Georgia, is the 2007 winner of the Bayer Dream Fund, a contest for people with diabetes who want to achieve a special dream that might not have been possible without control of their diabetes. Through this award, Professor Coleman will compose and perform a play about managing life with diabetes based on her and others’ personal experiences to inspire and encourage people with diabetes to live well with the condition. Professor Coleman, Ph.D., was first diagnosed with type-2 diabetes in her mid-thirties. She acknowledged she was in denial and did not take measures to manage her condition. After experiencing frightening symptoms, such as high blood glucose levels, headaches and fatigue that often interfered with her work, she finally took control and learned

Wendy Coleman to use her experiences and that of others like her to motivate people to prevent, control and live well with diabetes. As the 2007 winner of the Bayer Dream Fund, Coleman has the opportunity to realize her goal through her stage play, “This Is Our Story: Learning, Loving and Living Well with Diabetes.” The plot, which is based on her life, focuses on the main character’s diabetes diagnosis and subsequent denial. The main character learns how important diabetes self-man-

agement is through the inspirational stories and experiences of her family members and friends with diabetes. Coleman, who has a family history of the disease, was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes in 2005. At that point, Coleman took a closer look at her family’s experience and decided to bring together in a play the inspirational stories of those around her as a way to highlight the importance of managing the condition. In the play, Coleman draws from her own self-denial upon being diagnosed with diabetes to create a female lead character that gains a deeper understanding of her family’s struggle and, thus, obtains the strength and determination to turn her life around. “For a long time I suffered in silence, unwilling to accept my diagnosis or the life changes that accompany it,” Coleman said. “The courage and the struggle of my family and others I’ve met along this journey have inspired me to use my theatrical talents to help educate people about the importance of diabetes self-management.” This is Our Story: Learning,

that vaccinated women continue to get regular pap smears. Dr. Rachael Ross, a board certified sexologist who also has a general practice in Gary, Indiana has some concerns about the CDC’s recommendations. She doesn’t believe enough is known yet about the potential long-term side effects of the vaccine, also known as Gardasil. “In my professional opinion there is no evidence that it is necessary because girls will still need pap smears, they will still be at risk of developing cervical cancer and on top of that when you look at deaths from cervical cancer, it’s less than 3,000 women a year. I don’t know any scientific lab that would consider that an epidemic,” Dr. Ross said. “It’s not one of the things at the top of our list that we need to be conquering right now.” Earlier this year the CDC released a disturbing study that estimated one in four teens in the U.S. between the ages of 14 and 19 is infected with at least one STD and that African American teenage girls were most severely affected at a rate of 48 percent. The high rate has caused reason for concerns throughout the Black community. Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., director of the CDC’s Division of STD Preven-

tion said recently in a CDC press release that: “High STD infection rates among African American women are clear signs that we must continue developing ways to reach those who are most at risk.” The Crusader attempted to contact the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, Dr. Damon T. Arnold for comment on this story but was unsuccessful. However Dr. Arnold is concerned about the high infection rates in the Black community. Last week in downstate Springfield, he held a town hall meeting to discuss how to stop the spread of STDs in the community. He believes there isn’t one solution to the problem, but rather various approaches should be used. “It is important for communities to work together to help prevent and reduce the high rate of infection, especially among women and adolescents,” he said during the meeting at Union Baptist Church in Springfield. “We conducted the meeting in Springfield because it is one of the communities in Illinois most affected by STDs.” Another major concern for the vaccine and who to or if it should be given at all revolves around the topic of sex itself. Parents start

talking to their kids about sex at different ages so if the CDC is recommending the vaccine be given at the age of 11, but parents have yet to broach the subject with their child at the time, it could be a problem, according to Dr. Ross. “I think it sends the wrong message to young girls that we’re trying to teach how to live correctly…ultimately waiting until they’ve committed to one single sex partner,” Dr. Ross said. “Because ultimately your risks go up the more sex partners you have, your risks go up the earlier you start to have sex and if we focus on that instead of a nationwide vaccine, I think we’d be better off.” At least 50% of sexually active people will get HPV at some time in their lives, according to data from the CDC. Every year in the United States (U.S.), about 6.2 million people get HPV. HPV is most common in young women and men who are in their late teens and early 20s. Anyone who has ever had genital contact with another person can get HPV. Both men and women can get it – and pass it on to their sex partners- without even realizing it. It is not known how much protection condoms provide against HPV, since areas that are not covered by a condom can be exposed

how to manage her condition. Today, with self-blood glucose monitoring, a healthy diet and proper medication, Coleman is actively controlling her diabetes and hopes

Controversy over new HPV vaccine By J. Coyden Palmer

The debate over whether American girls should receive a vaccine for HPV (genital human papillomavirus) continues as the nation’s leading health organization, the Centers for Disease Control, is recommending girls 11 and 12 or females between the ages of 1326 who have not yet received or completed the vaccine series get the HPV vaccine. The Food and Drug Administration recently licensed the vaccine for use in girls/women, ages 9-26 years of age. The vaccine is given through a series of three shots over a sixmonth period for a total cost of about $360. The CDC says getting the vaccine will reduce cervical cancer rates, which are caused mostly by HPV, a sexually transmitted disease. The CDC contends that getting the vaccine at an early age before females become sexually active will increase its effectiveness. They claim the vaccine was tested on 11,000 females worldwide with the only side effect being soreness around the point of injection. But the vaccine will not protect against all types of HPV that cause cervical cancer, so vaccinated women will still be at risk for some cancers, according to the CDC. It is also recommended

to the virus. North of the border in Canada, officials in British Columbia this week announced that they will begin offering the HPV vaccine for free to girls in grades 6-9 starting next year. Parents must give their consent before the shots can be administered. HPV is one of the most commonly transmitted sexual diseases in Canada. The vaccine works by targeting the two strains of the HPV infection responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancer cases. There are approximately 40 types of genital HPV. Some types can cause cervical cancer in women and can also cause other kinds of cancer in both men and women. Other types can cause genital warts in both males and females. The HPV vaccine is designed to prevent the most common types of HPV that can lead to cervical cancer and genital warts. Currently only two states in the country, Alaska and New Hampshire have laws requiring vaccinations for girls, with New Hampshire having an opt-out provision. Illinois has a bill that would require all girls entering sixth grade to be vaccinated, but the legislation is still pending. The Illinois bill, like the New Hampshire law, would have an opt-out provision. 19
