Action Now rallies to end foreclosures By La Risa Lynch Only two years into owning their home, Clyde and Ida Whitley are about to lose it. The Ashburn couple rented for 41 years in the North Lawndale community before buying a quaint bungalow on a tree-lined street with neatly trimmed lawns on the southwest side. They thought their dream of home ownership had finally come. But a family crisis made the couple fall behind on their payments. They contacted their mortgage broker, Taylor Bean & Whitaker (TB&W), which bought their mortgage, hoping to restructure their loan to no avail. “They said come up with the money or either I want the house,” Ida Whitley said, of the Oakbrook-based company’s re-
sponse to request to rework the loan. “We didn’t say we didn’t want to pay. We wanted to lower it. They wouldn’t talk to us,” said 60-year-old Clyde Whitley of their $1,900 mortgage that ballooned to $2,500 within two years. “We were trying to pay what they said,” he added. “It was too much, but we didn’t know that at the time. We thought it was a fair deal. It got so bad, we couldn’t come up with the payment.” The Whitleys face the same foreclosure nightmare effecting thousands throughout the city and nation. But they are fighting back. The Whitleys have filed a lawsuit against TB&W alleging fraud. Their daughter, Kenna Whitley, 37, claims her parents were steered into a subprime loan even though their 690 credit
score made them eligible for a prime loan. She also alleges the mortgage broker misrepresented her parents to make them appear more credit worthy by listing them as white on the application. “My parents are attached to the home, but I feel like they really haven’t had a chance to enjoy it, because of all of the drama,” Whitley said, adding that Taylor Bean & Whitaker set her family up for failure. “They are very discouraged about this.” Last week the Whitleys joined forces with Action Now, a grassroots organizing group,
to demand a moratorium of foreclosures in the city. Nearly 30 Action Now members rallied outside of the Whitley’s Kenton Avenue home. With chants of “predatory lenders; criminal offenders,” the rally brought honks of support from passing cars. Predatory lenders effect more than just the homeowner; it has a ripple effect in communities like Ashburn, said Action Now’s executive director, Denise Dixon. “If this house cannot be saved, it will affect every single house on this block,” (Continued on page 2)
New NAACP president speaks exclusively with Black Press By J. Coyden Palmer
Last weekend the nation’s oldest Civil Rights organization announced that Ben
Benjamin Todd Jealous Jealous will be the next president of the NAACP. Jealous, 35, will become the youngest president in the organization’s 99 year history and the 17th president overall. A native of northern California Mr. Jealous was Director of the US Human Rights Program at Amnesty International. While there he led efforts to pass federal legislation against prison rape, rebuild public consensus against racial profiling in the wake of the September 2001 terrorist at-
tacks, and expose the widespread sentencing of children to life without the possibility of parole. Jealous also served as Executive Director of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), a trade association of 200 Black-owned newspapers across the country that includes the Chicago/Gary Crusader. He was the managing editor for the largest Black-owned newspaper in Mississippi and comes with fresh ideas to lead an organization that is being constantly criticized for his relevance in today’s society by younger Black Americans. Jealous, along with President of the Board for the NAACP Julian Bond, spoke with reporters from Black newspapers across the country May 20th via a teleconference where they addressed many of the issues facing the organization and how to come up with the best solutions. The selection of Jealous wasn’t without some dissension amongst board members. “As chairman of the board I have reached out to the unsuccessful candidates,” Bond said. “As you can imagine with a search of this kind in which there were 200 people, we came across a lot of people who might not have fit the description of the CEO but will still have something to offer to the NAACP. So this has been a great challenge for us and I will continue to reach out to many of the unsuccessful candidates in (Continued on page 3)

BISHOP ARTHUR M. BR AZIER RETIRES Bishop Arthur M. Brazier, longtime patriarch and widely revered pastor of the Apostolic Church of God (ACOG), 6320 S. Dorchester Ave., has announced plans to step down as pastor of the Pentecostal congregation he has led for 48 years. His last official broadcast will air June 8 on WCIU-TV 26 in Chicago.
Bishop Arthur M. Brazier On May 4, Bishop Brazier, 86, told parishioners that he would preach his last sermon as pastor on June 1, and he informed them that the ACOG Official Board and congregation had named Dr. Byron Brazier as his successor. Bishop Brazier praised the foresight of his board and asked his congregation to warmly embrace

He accepted, and combined his church with ACOG, which produced approximately 100 members. Today, ACOG has more than 20,000 members. Dixon said, noting that home values on a block with foreclosed properties drop by $2,000. “Every time a house is foreclosed on, the houses around them suffer, the community suffers. We have to take a stand against these predatory lenders. We have to stop this tsunami of foreclosures in the city of Chicago.” According to statistics compiled by the group, the state had 72,455 foreclosure filings in 2006. This was a 55 percent increase compared to 2005 foreclosure numbers. In 2007, that number rose to 90,782. Additionally, Blacks and Latinos are more likely than whites to receive subprime loans. In 2006, 60 percent of Blacks refinanced their mortgages with subprime loans while 42.5 percent of Latinos had subprime loans. Dixon said more options are needed for homeowners facing foreclosure to reconstruct the
loans. State Senator Jacqueline Collins’ Homeowner Protection Act provides just that. The bill, which takes affect July 1, gives homeowners a 60-day grace period before lenders can foreclose on a home. The time will allow the homeowner to seek counseling and draft a debt management plan. The act also requires full disclosure of taxes, insurance, principal, interest and fees the borrowers would pay toward the total cost of the loan, even with an ARM product. To deter mortgage steering as with the case of the Whitleys, Senate Bill 1879 would level heavy civil penalties against companies that violate the law, explained Kathryn Welch, Collins’ district director. She noted that a disproportionate number of minorities are steered into high cost subprime loans when they could qualify for lower cost traditional loans. “The scale and scope of the

foreclosure crisis is much deeper and broader than previously believed,” Welch said. “Senator Collins believes that the Illinois General Assembly has a responsibility (to ensure) that homebuyers have the knowledge, resources and government protection they need to stay in their homes.” When contacted, Taylor Bean & Whitaker’s corporate office could not specifically commit on the Whitley case citing confidentiality laws. However, in an e-mail statement, the Florida-based company “adamantly denies that it engages in predatory lending practices or predatory foreclosure practices” as alleged by Action Now. The statement further said that “TB&W is committed to working with its borrowers to avoid the loss of homes through foreclosures where such is possible.” However, Ida and Clyde Whitley advise those attempting to buy a home “to get their own personal lawyer.” The Chicago Crusader

Second audit finds more problems for Chicago State By J. Coyden Palmer After a state audit last year found administrators at Chicago State had erred in their accounting practices and couldn’t provide documentation for thousands of dollars spent by university President Elnora Daniel, school officials promised a tighter reign and Daniel announced her retirement at the end of next month. But a new audit released by the state last month shows that many of the same problems continued in the 2007 fiscal year. Among the irregularities discovered in the new audit were 37 contracts school officials failed to get bids on from four federal grant programs. In addition some of the contracts were signed after the work actually began and in other instances contracts above $250,000 were not approved by the Board of Trustees as is required. Board members reacted to the audit by blasting school adminis-
trators saying people at the school weren’t doing their jobs. Trustee Jim Reynolds said it’s time for all of the lazy bookkeeping practices to stop before the four-year university gets itself in a world of trouble. “The State of Illinois has rules around all of these things,” he began at a board meeting last month. “Chicago State just doesn’t follow all of them. You are trying to get by and hoping it doesn’t get caught. The people in charge of managing the finances at this school have to get serious about managing the school.” In all there were 17 problems found in the new audit. They included inadequate documentation of expenses and questionable spending of federal grant monies, a serious violation that could result in CSU losing accreditation or other penalties if found to be serious enough. Former CSU President Delores
Cross was convicted of fraud two years ago when she was the president of Morris-Brown College in Atlanta. Cross pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time in a federal prison. While the audit doesn’t allege criminal behavior, some around the school are growing concerned over the continued ignorance when it comes to the university’s finances. “I am very uncomfortable when these types of situations continue to repeat themselves,” said Trustee Rev. Leon Finney. “It sends the wrong message; one of impropriety and it only hurts the reputation of the school.” School officials are blaming a high turnover rate in employees and a lack of adequate training as to why the numbers don’t add up. That excuse isn’t sitting well with students of trustees who say its embarrassing when a college can’t keep its own books correctly.

best friend.” Jamison said she and the girl became best friends when they met in the fourth grade. They both are from the west suburbs and she said the two would often take the bus or catch a ride to Kelly’s house where they would spend lots of time. In addition to hanging out with Kelly at his home, Jamison said she and the alleged victim would accompany him to a local gym, Hoops and a music studio where he would record for hours. In addition to money, Jamison also testified her friend got a new Chrysler PT Cruiser around their sophomore year in high school at a time when they were about 14 or 15. Jack Kelly, a former investigator with the State’s Attorney’s office, testified that Kelly did own a red-brick building on west George St. in the Lake View community where the tape is believed to have been made. He said he never interviewed the singer in connection with the tape. Jamison’s legal guardian also identified the girl on the tape. He said it was clear in his mind after viewing the video who the girl was. “Her face…the size of her…as she got older she began to look more like a woman,” said Peter Thomas. “Here she looked like a kid.” Under cross examination from Kelly’s defense lawyer Sam Adam Jr., Jamison kept to her testimony that she knew the girl on the tape as her best friend of nearly 10 years. She said the two aren’t friends anymore and that the last time she saw her was six years ago when they had a chance meeting downtown. Adams was able to get Jamison to say during the testimo-
ny that of the hundreds of times she saw the two together, she never saw them involved in any sexual act. Jamison also said her friend never told her that she was having a relationship with Kelly, but Jamison said that doesn’t mean anything ever happened between the two when she wasn’t around. “There were things I wouldn’t tell her as I’m sure there were things that she wouldn’t tell me,” Jamison said. Adams also implied that the tape could have been altered. Prosecutors are expected to introduce into the trial later this week the testimony of a video expert that has authenticated the tape. But that didn’t stop Adams from asking Jamison if it were possible the tape could have been altered. The woman said it was possible. Adams asked her if she had seen the movie “Little Man” where an adult actor’s head is superimposed on a baby’s body. She replied “yes.” Asked if it looked very real to her by Adams, Jamison responded with a comical “no,” that drew laughs from the courtroom. Kelly and his wife are currently going through a divorce and she has not attended any of the proceedings thus far. A sketch artist from the Chicago Tribune had her credentials taken away by the judge after her drawing, that showed some of the facial features of the jury, were printed in the May 21st edition of the paper. Judge Vincent Gaughan has been strict with access to the media and even stricter that media members follow the rules, which included no identifying features of jurors be published until after the trial is over.
Friend of victim identifies Kelly as man is sex video The best friend of the alleged female victim in the case involving a Chicago musician identified the girl in the video as that of her former friend and the man as R&B superstar R. Kelly. Simha Jamison, 24, said she recognized the girl on the tape as that of her former best friend based on the hairstyle. She also testified that she and the alleged victim would often go to Kelly’s home and she saw on several occasions Kelly giving the girl money. Jamison was the first prosecution witness called in the case against Kelly, who is facing years in prison for allegedly having sex with a minor and for illegally videotaping a sex act. Kelly has repeatedly denied that he is the man in the now infamous 27 minute video. The video was presented to jurors on the first day of trial during the prosecutions opening arguments. Kelly, who in an interview with BET’s Ed Gordon six years ago said he never saw or wanted to see the tape, winced and covered his mouth as the tape was shown in open court. Jurors also were turned off by the graphic acts displayed on the video. Prosecutors believe the video is the strongest evidence they have against Kelly, who has settled three cases out of court with other teenage girls who’ve alleged having sexual trysts with the married father of three. “I kind of know her like the back of my hand,” Jamison said, when asked by Cook County Asst. State’s Attorney Shauna Boliker how she could identify the girl. “But mainly because of the haircut that she has. I thought she looked just like my

Auditor General William Holland’s review found repeated problems with the university’s handling of contracts. Auditors checked 26 contracts and found 18 of them — worth more than $2 million —
were signed by officials after the date services began. This new audit didn’t find any problems like administrators charging lavish trips to the university as they did last year when Daniel was forced to pay back $8,654 when she took family members on a Caribbean cruise. That revelation in part led to her announcing her retirement effective June 30th. She will still get a year of salary as called for in her contract after she leaves. The timing of the audit couldn’t come at a worse time for CSU as commencement exercises are set for May 22nd. (Continued from page 1) hopes of make them a permanent part of the organization. And while Jealous’ choice might not have been unanimous, we are a large body and dissension is not uncommon when it comes to important decisions like this. I am very pleased that Benjamin Jealous is the new leader of the NAACP.” Jealous said he hopes to put more resources into documenting crumbling schools, the exclusion of formerly incarcerated people from society and acts of discrimination that are still taking place for a generation who too often think those things are only issues of the past. He also wants to coordinate the media of the NAACP and work effectively with the Black press and radio to eventually make an impact in the general media as it relates to the images, perspectives and stories of Blacks. “People have asked me why I want to give up a pretty cushy life for this job,” Jealous began. “The answer is I’m the father of a 2 year-old Black girl and I was told when I was a small child that the battle had been won and that my job was to not focus on the movement but to go out and make money. As I’ve grown up I’ve always skewed more to the movement divide because it was clear to me that much more progress needed to be made on that side.” Jealous strongly believes that joining forces with Black media outlets is going to play an important role in telling the truth about what is happening to and in the Black community. He says the partnership will be most beneficial when working on a common cause like they did in the past. He used the Double D campaign during World War II as an example. He also hopes Black newspa-
pers will reach out to the NAACP when there is a local outrage. “There are people in this country who want to believe that what happened in Jenna, Louisiana was an aberration and unfortunately its not,” Jealous said. “Working as a reporter at the Jackson Advocate in Mississippi and just living in this country I can tell you that type of stuff does happen.” Bond admitted that Jealous’ age is going to be questioned. Leaders of the NAACP expected the question and said it’s time to let young, qualified adults like Jealous take leadership roles in Black institutions or the institutions themselves will die. He and others believe Jealous has just the right mix to be effective. “When I examined his record I saw his youth would be an advantage because he’s not only young, but very intelligent and mature. By showing he can accept this responsibility it will be a great example for the youth around this country,” said Gary Bledsoe, a member of the NAACP National Board. He added that he was impressed with Jealous’ knowledge of the history of the Civil Rights Movement and Civil Rights issues. Bledsoe said Jealous knew of small nuances and details that you would think only a person who lived through those times would know about. Like Bledsoe, Bond is hoping Jealous’ ability to reach new younger members will also generate much needed finances to the organization. “His youth is going to be a great asset to us,” Bond said. “We believe he will make the NAACP more attractive to people of his age core and he just has a sensitivity and feel for the human and civil rights issues that we have pursued for nearly 100 years.”
The bad publicity and poor financial record keeping is also turning off alums. Many were thrilled when Daniel’s announced in January that she would be leaving the school after 10 years at the helm. They say she didn’t bring the school forward and during her tenure the school has gotten more bad press then they would have ever imagined. They’ve let their feelings be known by not sending money back to the school.

MEMORIAL DAY 2008 There will be wars and rumors of wars, so says a very great Book. In actuality, people on Earth have experienced wars on a continual basis since humans became conscious enough to historically record them. And think about how much blood has been shed in the name of honor, glory, money, or whatever. In retrospect, we can certainly wonder if it was all worth it, all the shattered lives. After all of the continual wars, they continue to be fought, which lends credence to the notion that warfare is a futile undertaking. Even though this is the case, we must not forget to honor the warriors, the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for what they felt was an ultimate good. And so it has been for eons… In the United States, we celebrate the memory of the war dead during the last part of the month of May. The traditional celebration includes outdoor activities; barbecues and parades. People visit the graves of their loved ones and of others who sacrificed their lives for the sake of their country. Admittedly, it takes a special kind of bravery and daring to become a soldier. That lifestyle is not for the feint-hearted. To know that at any moment on the battlefield or off, you or your comrades could be blown to bits or shot out of existence is no easy concept to live with. But real soldiers take on this attitude as a matter of course. On another note – are some wars more “righteous” than others? Certainly, from the standpoint of African Americans, the Civil War, which resulted in the end of slavery and the restoration of the Union, was righteous. The current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are questionable, however. They were initiated under false pretensions and are getting worse. In the eyes of some, these wars will continue on into the foreseeable future. To make matters worse, the United States is now saber-rattling at Iran. The American sheeple would have to be truly naïve, however, if we are convinced that yet another war for dubious reasons and with questionable intent is needed. To date, thousands of American lives have been lost after a declaration by the current lame duck commander-in-chief that the “mission was accomplished” five years ago. How ludicrous – a mission that was supposedly accomplished is continuing unabated, and has resulted in a civil war in Iraq. The mission that was accomplished was the fragmentation of a sovereign nation and the loss of too many American lives. Even though this is the case, we must not forget the thousands of young warriors who went off to fight a war orchestrated by old men (and women) with no intentions of gracing the battlefields themselves. We hope that this Memorial Day, some thought will be given to the hope that the senseless killing of humans by other humans will cease and desist at some point in the future. The Crusader offers condolences for the families of those who have lost their lives in current and previous wars, and may these fallen warriors rest in peace. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It’s time to improve access to dental care Dear Editor: Every day, thousands of children from Illinois’ working families are forced to forego basic dental care. Many of these children – residing in rural as well as urban regions of the state – live with painful tooth decay that results in school absences, the inability to eat, sleep or study properly, and over time, increased risk for other serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Nearly half of Illinois counties were recently identified by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality as having an insufficient supply of dentists to meet the needs of local residents. In many cases, families in rural and urban Illinois are forced to take off days from work and drive more than 300 miles to find a dentist that takes Medicaid patients. This results in our families going without or postponing much needed dental care for their children and an unbearable financial burden to hard-working parents. Illinois dentists have accepted the charge to improve access to dental care throughout the state.
We are among the founders of the Bridge To Healthy Smiles Coalition (www.bridgetohealthysmiles.com) currently working with the state legislature to heighten awareness of this critical health problem and ultimately break down barriers to dental access in Illinois. Our three-part plan includes increasing funding for Medicaid dental care (Illinois has one of the lowest reimbursement rates in the nation), opening 10 new dental clinics in 10 underserved areas by 2010, and forgiving a portion of student loans for those dentists who agree to practice in underserved areas. We can’t do it alone. Government, business leaders, insurance companies, healthcare professionals, patient advocacy groups and individuals all need to work together to improve access to dental care in Illinois. Illinois families need effective solutions to solve their dental care needs.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Notes from Paris
By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Paris is quickly becoming my favorite city. It is clean, vibrant and the people are so professional and friendly. Things can be expensive due to the current weak
Harry C. Alford US dollar value but once you understand where the bargains and best deals are you can get by in comfort. Blacks are everywhere! The diversity of all ethnicities resembles that of a typical city in
the United States. We are indeed represented. However, power and representation of Blacks in France versus the United States is night and day. We have political power. Black mayors, state representatives, congressional officials, county and city elected officials are in the United States to the point that each segment has a national association replete with active committees and meetings. France, on the other hand, has just begun but it will be a great while before they can resemble what we have done in the US. The biggest problem is that they do not perform a national census based on race. It is forbidden in their constitution to denote race in demographics. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to detect disparity and/or discrimination even though every bottom rung of the economic ladder will find Blacks there being left out of the mainstream. France is going to have to change this and find ways to accurately account for their Black population and to determine what is considered equality and what is not. There is another nasty problem festering within French society. There appears to be a mild divide
within the Black population. People with roots from the Caribbean want to think of themselves as being different than Blacks with direct links to Africa. They proclaim that they are the descendents of slaves and their African counterparts are the descendents of the slave traders. Thus, they create an unnecessary friction. In my speeches and interviews I made it clear that this situation was completely unnecessary and counter productive. I actually had to check a few persons who claimed that is how it is in the United States. “That’s completely untrue. Anyone from Africa, the Caribbean or homegrown is considered the same in the United States. We come from the same villages and tribes and we are the same people. We embrace Mother Africa from which our ancestors thrived. We are all family.” I also made it clear that we will support their new Black chamber of commerce and it will be for all descendents of Africa, direct or indirect. If the Caribbeans dare to not accept it then that’s all right. Just don’t get in our way or you will find yourselves being pushed aside or stepped on. We are serious!
Despite the word entrepreneur being a French word, rarely do you see small business activity in the nation. Black business is almost nil. This is where we have great opportunity in demonstrating best practices that have been proven here in the United States. I told the press that when the National Black Chamber of Commerce started in 1993 there were, according to the US Census, 300,000 Black-owned businesses in the United States doing about $33 billion in sales. Today, there are over 1.2 million Blackowned businesses doing over $100 billion in sales. That’s progress! We have something to show Blacks in France and can help jumpstart their business infrastructure. You cannot have an adequate number of jobs for your people or begin to build wealth, individually and collectively, without a foundation of business ownership. It is the key to our complete freedom and quality of life as a people. Blacks in France will have to establish economic equity before political power which is the opposite of what we are doing. As long as both become a reality there is success regardless as to which comes first. One big advantage our French
brothers and sisters have is their direct link and relationship to Africa. Many were born there or at least need to only go two generations back to identify their roots. They have relatives there and know the language and culture which are remote to African Americans for the most part. This is the “hook up”. Our entrepreneurial experiences coupled with their upfront, hands on knowledge of Africa can make a great combination for success. We will partner with our French brothers and bring trade and deal making within the Black Diaspora as never before. I have Paris down. Now is the time to go out to smaller cities and different parts of France to learn the total picture. We will never have an Annual Convention without participation from France. They will never have a large conference without US input and networking. The world is about to see a big change and Africa in addition to the United States and France will be better for it. Harry Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Website: www.nationalbcc.org.
A More Perfect Union B y P h i l l W i l so n N N P A C o l um n i s t By striking down California's law that limited marriage to opposite sex couples, the California Supreme Court took a major step toward the formation of that “more perfect Union” that our forefathers dreamt about. The ruling is a blow against marginalization, and stigmatization, therefore, a blow against HIV/AIDS. Black America should applaud the Court's decision. It is by now clear that shame and stigma surrounding sexuality—whether gay, straight or bisexual—is deadly. When our public policies reinforce a social order in which some relationships are valued more than others, we push people to the margins. When we refuse to affirm open, healthy relationships, we encourage hidden, self-damaging ones. And that’s something Black America cannot afford. Many of our leaders are calling on a mass Black Mobilization to end the AIDS epidemic in our communities.

HIV infection rates among Black gay and bisexual men to exceed those in some of the hardest hit corners of the globe. A seven-city U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found 46 percent of Black gay and bi-men to already be HIV positive. And the toll is particularly high among young men: A New York City health department study last fall found that a stunning nine out of 10 HIV infections among gay and bisexual men under age 20 were among Blacks and Latinos—most of whom don’t know they are infected. Many different factors come together to drive these trends, ranging from the social to the biological. And far too many questions remain unanswered. One villain, however, is clear: Sexual shame and fear. And public policies that devalue loving, supportive relationships help spread these emotional vectors of disease. Moreover, our nation’s sexual caste system is not only unhealthy, it’s immoral. “Homophobia is as morally wrong and as unacceptable as racism,” the

late Coretta Scott King reminded us. “We ought to extend to gay and lesbian people the same respect and dignity we claim for ourselves. Every person is a child of God, and every human being is entitled to full human rights.” From child custody to health benefits, our government denies those rights daily through intrusions into the family decisions of same-gender couples. They are denied access to more than 1,000 legal rights and responsibilities that marriage brings. It’s an injustice carried out against a broad swath of society. The 2000 Census found same-sex households in 99.3 percent of U.S counties. And not just white people: 10.5 percent of those households were Black and 11.9 percent were Latino. And not just the couples themselves: 34 percent of the female couples and 22 percent of the male couples were raising at least one child in their home. I welcome the day when every state follows the lead of California in working towards true equality for all of our families. 5

AFRICAN LIBERATION DAY 2008: PART I ( D r . The celebration of African Liberation Day (ALD) in the United States began in May 1972 in Washington, D.C. More than 60,000 people participated in this historic event. In 1973, ALD was decentralized and Chicago sponsored its first ALD celebration in May of that year. Since that time, we
Dr. Conrad Worrill have celebrated ALD in various ways, with parades, rallies, and cultural programs. From the 1980s through 1997, NBUF Chicago Chapter sponsored African Liberation Day / ALD on the Westside, where we marched down Madison Street and culminated with a rally and cultural program in Garfield Park. These ALD events have been very successful and we have been honored to sponsor them. Other groups are now sponsoring African Liberation Day celebrations and activities throughout the United States. African Liberation Day has become an institution throughout the African world. It is a day when all people of African ancestry should come together. Whether you were born in Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Jamaica, Mississippi, Alabama, 6
Georgia, Belize, Bahia, Canada, Cuba, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Paris, or Chicago, as long as you are Black, you are an African, with a common heritage, and a common set of conditions. As we prepare to participate in the upcoming weekend of events and activities, we must always remember the origin and development of African Liberation Day. Our ancestor, Kwame Ture, explained, “ALD was founded by Kwame Nkrumah on the occasion of the First Conference of Independent States held in Accra, Ghana and attended by eight independent states. The 15th of April was declared African Freedom Day to mark each year the onward process of the liberation movement, and to symbolize the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.” Further, the AAPRP (AllAfrican People’s Revolutionary Party) points out that, “On the 25th of May 1963, 31 African heads of state convened a summit meeting to found the Organization of African Unity. They proclaimed May 25th as ALD and called for mass demonstrations and manifestations in every comer of Africa and the African Diaspora.” The idea of ALD has its origins in the long history of African people to break free of the yoke of European domination and white supremacy. This is a time in which we emphasize our oneness as a people with a common past, common set of problems, and a common future. The capturing of millions of African people, who were placed in slavery and introduced into the western hemisphere as property and commodities, is the backdrop upon which we commemorate African Liberation Day. It was the slave trade industry of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth-centuries involving Britain, France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and Germany that served as the foundation for these western powers and provided them the margin of profit in getting the greatest return off of their investment. The western world still seeks to keep Africa and African people worldwide in bondage, so they can continue to maximize the greatest return off of their initial investment.

After chattel slavery was abolished in England and the United States, the slave trade industry began to wind down. The former slave-trading nations found themselves no longer needing slaves, but yet stumbled upon the other natural resources of Africa. They began to fight each other over the gold, diamonds, and other mineral and plant resources they were discovering. This resulted in the calling of the Berlin Conference in 1884, where the European powers united to divide the continent of Africa among themselves. It has been discussed, historically, that those who control Africa, control the world. Therefore, the Berlin Conference was a crowning blow in African history. The results of this conference led to the carving up of Africa so that France, Britain, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, and Germany controlled separate territories throughout the continent. This became known as the colonial period in African history. The colonial period in Africa, just as the enslavement of African people captured and brought to North America, had a devastating impact on Africa and African people. It was not until the early 1950s that the first African country gained political independence in the movement to reclaim Africa. That country was Ghana under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah who led the Ghanaian people in their fight against British colonialism. I will continue the discussion of the origin and development of African Liberation Day in my next column. Don’t forget to support African Liberation Day Activities throughout the world.
LEST WE FORGET
I have tried to make you aware of all of the issues as they may affect your quality of life through the columns that I have written over the last two and a half decades. The poor have a tendency to forget in a matter of seconds. Why, because their life is different from the rest of us, they live in a different playing zone. They don’t get a chance to digest the real world that winds around secrets, laws, and controls that change everything around us all. It will be the law as one sees it one minute and then the administration of laws that are set up against the little people who seem to not realize the effects these new laws may have upon them, laws that are supposed to direct our lives and social expectations, that are supposed to govern us all. It is the multitude that do not participate in the determining of direction of the ever-changing laws that are good for us or for that matter those that are bad for the citizens who are not made aware of these ever-changing laws that could or could not make a change for the better or the worse! The laws of nature change all on their own and we all are made aware that they have changed for the better or the worse. Consider China and the arrival of her soreness of the torture they have put upon her people and those of other nations, like Tibet. China has a long history and one that has turned into one of a communist and has not realized that the people of China are under great strain and bitterness towards their government. Those who are in charge have forgotten about their people before and after the second world war where they immediately
turned. After that war her millions and millions of people were placed in positions of destitution living in homes that kept them alive and able to bring the over abundance of a profit. Not they are unable to get the great earthquakes that will continue and the death rate will climb brought on
Maurice A. Clayton by the poor construction that is evident in the way the buildings are collapsing like a house of cards. In other countries we find that after a tremendous typhoon has killed at least 250, 000 people as this goes to press, the war lords of the nation are hoarding most of the food that has been sent by other nations to help. Here in America, we find that we might be in danger of the wrath of Mother Nature at anytime, in many different ways. It’s time to get a family plan together that includes a charged cell phone, emergency radio, maybe a gas powered generator, photocopies of important papers, and well stocked canned-food rations at hand. God bless America, and the world that is at peace and those who want it!
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) others who spent their lives showing us how to do for self, in order to get out of the condition we are in. I hope we have not waited too late to avoid another form of slavery. The next form of slavery will not be chopping and picking cotton. It will come from unemployment and the jail system. According to a report from a person in the State Attorney’s office approximately seventy per cent of the people being arrested are unemployed. Most of those are Afro Americans. Jails are now being privatized, that means inmates have to work for private industry for jail salary.
Many Blacks say that the Hispanics are taking our jobs. That is not true. Our jobs are those we create. Most of the jobs Hispanics are working on are not only being hired on jobs that Blacks don’t want, they are also being hired on jobs that Blacks would be glad to have. We think by whites hiring Hispanics are hurting us. But the teal suffering is yet to come. President Bush has lost the war and doesn’t know what way to turn. But what he plans to do is going to hurt Blacks much more than the Hispanic problem. The war has caused many Arabs to become homeless and jobless. The President plans to bring them

I beg and I plead to every African American to invest your money where it will make a better life for little Black boys and girls. HE’LL PEE ON YOU Hearing murmurs that while R. Kelly’s defense team is trying to make folk believe that ain’t him peeing on that little girl on that porno tape, the prosecution has an ace card up their sleeves and that they will use a unpopular legal maneuver to avoid having to turn over what they got to the other side. Don’t know what to make of it, but there’s word that they may pull out three or four young women who will testify that they, too, had sex with the Grammy-award winning crooner when they were underage and that one of them has some kind of proof. They say these possible character witnesses haven’t been paid off by Kelly’s people— though they tried. At least one of the women reportedly gave Kelly the “sides” but not the main course inside a popular recording studio once used by Kanye West. But the real crazy part about it, one of these so-called surprise witnesses is still young enough that the statute of limitations ain’t run out on statutory rape. Don’t know if this is another case of the white man trying to take a Black man down—because white folks do seem obsessed with that national past time—-or if Kelly’s undisciplined sexual behavior will land him behind bars. - ImaOBAMA FALLOUT Say it ain’t so—-are the few Black people working on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign being forced out? That’s what a few have told folk. They said they will be given their walking papers soon after he clenches the Democratic nomination in June. Folk are basing this rumor on the fact that is exactly what Obama did once he knew he was going to win the Illinois senate seat— though he was careful to keep one or two key Negroes around. Well at least in an Obama White House he won’t sick the Justice Department on the colored most of the time. - ImaCONFIRM & DENY The Chicago Crusader

Funny, while Alderman Sandi Jackson nurses her neck and Congressman Bobby Rush nurses his neck. Voters of the 1st congressional district may be grabbed around the neck if the former Black Panther loses control of that seat. Not only will Sandi turn that seat into another Jackson Family powerbase, she will have no ties to the grassroots Negroes who’ve been holding out for that non-existent revolution. The saddest part of it all—-Rush ain’t trained nobody. Who will take his place—-we hope it ain’t that fast-talking, skinny guy whose been working for him for the last 30 years, because he’s irritating. Jackson Jr., who has a position for life in the 2nd Congressional District has been very open about how he’s going to change the face of Illinois politics by getting all of his friends elected in key seats. Now apparently he has other plans for his wife—-who he has also considered for mayor. Though the Jacksons were mum about the Cloudy Times article about her wanting to take Rush’s place, should he not last too much longer, she didn’t exactly deny it either—though she wished Bobby well. Wonder how she gonna get State Senator Kwame Raoul out the way—because he’s cut a deal with Barack Obama and the University of Chicago to get that district away from the militant negroes. It don’t matter that Rush turned into more of a gray panther, rather than a Black one (and even kissed Daley’s ring and washed his car), Obama’s crowd hates him for whatever reason and they are coming to get him. No one should be surprised since the presidential front runner keeps making a point to say the ONLY POLITICAL RACE HE EVER LOST was to BOBBY RUSH—and now he’s coming for payback. Remember Junior is Obama’s guy too. So stay tuned for this one—-and Bobby Rush hang on—-until you train somebody.
controlled, major grocery store is being sold to an Arab after more than thirty years serving the community. The Harris family couldn’t find no brother or sister to sell it too in the Windy City, so Ima understands why they had no choice but to call all the way to Lebanon to find an impoverished Middle Easterner to give their business too. Wonder if them nice teenage girls who work at that store are going to hang around after they get a look at their new boss. Ain’t never seen nothing like this. And any Black person that shops in that store, after it changes ownership ought to change their last name to Toby. Boycott Chatham food, because that store is boycotting

The one-term Cook County Board President Todd Stroger has a mental problem. He really needs to tell Beavers to leave him alone and let him run the county into the ground by his own self. Scandal after scandal keeps invading his office and Forest Claypool’s name ain’t came up once. The good news is Ima done traced her family tree and apparently she is related to Todd on his mama’s counsin’s brother’s side and that means Ima ought to be getting a high-paying county job
A South Side business man may have lost the love of his life for not washing his feet. Apparently he and a popular TV personality (not Cheryl Burton) was about to bump uglies when she got a whiff of his feet and got turned off. Said she ain’t never smelled nothing as bad since she came home from a three week trip to Bermuda and her poodle had died in the middle of her kitchen floor. Wash your feet bro.

ENTERTAINMENT
By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Restaurant offers a distinctive vision of authentic high-quality Chicago-style barbecue An unbridled barbecue passion and a unique team of culinary professionals create the definitive Chicago rendition For barbecue lovers, barbecue isn't simply a cuisine, it's a passion. No one is more passionate about great barbecue than Dave (aka Sweet Baby Ray) Raymond and his partner, Mike O'Brien, owners of Sweet Baby Ray's Restaurant in Elk Grove Village (800 E. Higgins Rd., Elk Grove Village, Ill.; 847-437-9555). "Barbecue is about having fun," says Dave. "If you're not having fun, you're not having great barbecue." Dave, Mike and their unique, professionally trained culinary team have great fun every day. That fun translates into serving hundreds of customers daily both at the restaurant and through private catering events. What most people don't realize is that, behind the smiles and laughter, their barbecue expertise comes from their deep understanding of what goes into barbecue quality. They have developed distinctive, out-of-the-ordinary recipes, source the best ingredients, procure the best cooking equipment and then prepare the food in the painstaking, time consuming manner that is required to produce the Sweet Baby Ray's signature barbecue. While the name is familiar in most Chicago households, the restaurant, Sweet Baby Ray's has only been open since December 2007. Friends since high school, O'Brien and Raymond are dedicated to applying their years of barbecue experience and business savvy to provide the best barbecue dining experience possible for their enthusiastic customers. Sweet Baby Ray's is named for the nationally known barbecue sauce that was created in 1982 by Dave's brother, Larry. The sauce has become the second best selling barbecue sauce in the United States. "The name is who we are, but we are more than just a name," states Dave. His personal dedication to barbecue is easily explained with his trips around the country to sample each region's take on authentic barbecue. There are four key accepted styles of barbecue: Carolina, Memphis, Texas and Kansas City. The goal of Dave and O'Brien is to put Chicago style barbecue on the map. "Sweet Baby Ray's is an expression of our distinctive barbecue vision," says O'Brien. "It's our version of what we know to be authentic high-quality Chicago barbecue." Chicago Style Barbecue Authentic hickory smoked meats have been smoked in Chicago since the days of the stockyards when Chicago was known as the "hog butcher to the world." Chicago's barbecue joints have developed and evolved from Southerners bringing what they know about barbecue, based on where they're from, and expanding their knowledge in Chicago. Over the years, the Sweet Baby Ray's team has learned the barbecue preferences of the Windy City patrons. Chicagoans love baby back ribs. To satisfy this craving, Sweet Baby Ray's has a very specific preference on the dimensions of its baby back ribs. Each slab must be 1¾ pounds, have 11-13 bones, be at least 2½ inches wide on its shortest end and be no more than 1½ inches larger than the small end. Sweet Baby Ray's does not accept "shiners"-slabs where the meat has been cut too close to the bone. These exposed bones may fall out during cooking. The high quality of the baby back ribs is something Sweet Baby Ray's prides itself on. While not nearly as popular as baby back ribs, Chicagoans prefer the St. Louis cut of spare ribs over full spare ribs, which are more common in Southern markets. In Chicago, patrons have a great penchant for rib (Continued on page 19) 12

Chicago Opera Theater presents John Adams’ ‘A Flowering Tree’ By George M. Williams with Barbara Wright-Pryor
Opera less ordinary! That is the calling card of Chicago Opera Theater which earns kudos for its staging of “A Flowering Tree” by American composer John Adams. “Tree” is modeled on the themes of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and based on poetry and a folktale in the Kannada language of southern India as translated by A. K. Ramanujan, a University of Chicago scholar of South Asian language and culture. The libretto was created by Adams in conjunction with stage director Peter Sellars with whom previous collaborations in 1985 resulted in Adams’ hit operas, “Nixon in China” and “The Death of Klinghoffer.” John Adams is no stranger to Chicago audiences or Chicago Opera Theater, for that matter. COT presented Adams’ historical work “Nixon in China” in 2006, and earlier in this season, Lyric Opera of Chicago successfully staged “Dr. Atomic,” another of Adams’ historical works based on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the scientific and moral crises surrounding the creation of the world’s first atomic bomb in 1945. In 2004, Adams was named the inaugural winner of the $100,000 Michael Ludwig
Nemmers Prize in Musical Composition by the School of Music at Northwestern University. “A Flowering Tree” is a rich boy meets and marries girl from a poverty-stricken family, boy loses girl, and ultimately, boy finds girl and they all live happily ever after kind of story. The twist in the tale is the girl discovers that by pouring water on herself, she can transform into a flower-bearing tree which, with the help of her sister, she does at the opera’s very beginning. The girls subsequently sell the flowers at the local marketplace and give the money to their mother without explanation. The boy, who is actually a prince, witnesses one of the transformations and falls in love with Kumudha. After marrying her, he pleads with her to perform this ritual for him on their wedding night. At first she is reluctant but finally does as he wishes. The prince’s jealous sister learns of Kumudha’s special ability and convinces her to perform the transformation for some of her rich friends while the prince is away. They leave Kumudha in the rain before she can resume her human form and she becomes a disfigured stump. The distraught prince becomes a wandering beggar because his wife has left him. Eventually they meet again, the
prince rode. As Kumudha, soprano Natasha Jouhl negotiated Adams’ vocal lines with a fine lyrical voice. Noah Stewart, as the prince, displayed an expressive tenor voice that captured both the wonder and anguish of his character. Baritone Sanford Sylvan, the Storyteller, sang with great aplomb and authority as he effectively narrated this charming tale.
Noah Stewart/ Photos: Liz Lauren prince helps restore her to human form and they are happily reunited. John Adams’ music is quite accessible, and though the vocal lines are quite angular and require wide vocal leaps on occasion, the orchestration always supports and underscores the singers and the action on stage. Due to the acoustical perfection of the Harris Theater, the singers were never overpowered and each projected their vocal lines clearly above the large orchestra. The staging, though spartan, was ingenious, and, at one point, required the singers to use cardboard pieces to represent a bird and the elephant upon which the

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
NBA star Wade buys mom a church in Chicago By J. Coyden Palmer
Most NBA players buy their moms a house or car when they make it big, but Miami Heat guard and Chicago area native Dwyane Wade bought his mother something different—a church. Jolinda Wade was a drug addict and seller for most of her son’s childhood. His older sister Tragil took on a motherly role for her younger brother as their mother battled the addiction disease. Jolinda Wade got the help she needed eight years ago when her daughter took her to a church in a last-ditch effort to get through to her about what harm she was not only doing to herself but the family she loved. She got the message and shortly thereafter turned herself into police to start serving a prison term she had skipped out on. “My mother is a miracle to me and to our family, to see from where she came to where she’s at now,” Tragil Wade said. “I can’t even describe it. It’s like, if you didn’t believe in God, this right here would make the belief strong. She has overcome a lot of things in life and even though she will have to deal with addiction for the rest of her life, I believe she can beat the Devil.” Jolinda’s new sanctuary has a purple décor, the color which is known to denote royalty/deity in the Christian religion. The Temple of Praise bears her name outside and she expects the popularity of her son will bring in new members as well as those who are just curious visitors. She believes that people need the church in
these days of economic hardships and what many see as a lack of morals in society. But she believes more than anything else that her story of being one of the former menaces to society to becoming a productive member looking to help others will bring more interest than anything her son could do on a basketball court. “I feel re-born right now,” she said. “Today is one of the highest moments in my life. I know I’ve been given a second chance by God and now it’s up to me to repay all those who stuck by me during my darkest hours as well as helping those who currently are where I used to be.” Jolinda Wade’s new church opened just a week after Mother’s Day was celebrated across the country. Sharing in the festivities were the mothers of Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal. Dwayne Wade sat in the first pew and openly showed his emotions towards his mother after helping her cut the ribbon to open the doors to the church. Wade, who in the past has given a large donation to his high school Richards in Oak Lawn, purchased the abandoned property Temple of Praise now occupies four months ago. After two months of renovations the church was ready to open its doors even though Jolinda Wade had started the church back in October with just over 40 members. On Sunday she had well over 200 people in attendance. For her son it was the light at the end of a long dark tunnel his mother had been travelling through for years.

SENATE VICTORIOUS OVER HOUSE! SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Senate Softball team, led by State Senator Rickey Hendon, defeated the Illinois House Softball team 6-3 at the annual SenateHouse Softball Game on Wednesday at Springfield’s Lincoln Park. This year’s Most Valuable Player award was given to Senator Kotowski for outstanding play both in the field and at the plate. Sen. Kotowski hit an early home run to give the Senate a lead they would never relinquish and he also made a highlight-worthy catch to slow the House’s rally. The House team had defeated the Senate team the last three years, but was thwarted due to the leadership and tenacity of Team Captain, pitcher, and Assistant Majority Leader Senator Hendon. Hendon’s pitching along with the defensive play of his Senate colleagues, held the House to its lowest run total in recent memory.
STATE SENATOR RICKEY HENDON stands with the Illinois Senate Softball Team after their triumph in the Annual HouseSenate Softball match on Wednesday, May 14th. “This year we showed that we truly are the House of Lords and put the lower chamber in their

them again next year.” The annual match is sponsored by the St. Louis Regional Cham-
ber & Growth Association, with all of the proceeds of the event being donated to a local charity.
