Police need help in solving school teacher’s murder By J. Coyden Palmer Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan is offering a $5,000 award for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for murdering a South Side special education teacher earlier this week. Erika Prince, 32, was killed during the early morning hours of June 1st as she sat in her vehicle outside a home in the 8700 block of South Euclid. Chicago Police believe she was either not the intended victim or hit by erratic gunfire shortly after midnight. She was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the head. She died shortly after 8 p.m.
Family and friends of the single mother say she didn’t have a conflict with anyone and that they now must raise her daughter and son without their mother. She was at the home on South Euclid waiting for her niece and kids to come out of the home where they were picking up some items after a sleepover. Duncan said this is the first time he’s had to offer a reward in the killing of a teacher. “I think it’s shocking and unacceptable that we as a society continue to accept these sad situations at an alarming rate,” he said. “The availability of guns is too easy and we are seeing the tragic results.” Prince taught special education students

said it was one of the toughest things she’s had to do when announcing Prince’s death to students and faculty. “The kids had heard about it, and they were emotional. She was that kind of teacher,” Dale said. “Most of the staff was at the hospital [Sunday], they were all able to see her and pray with her.” Dixon, located at 8306 S. St. Lawrence, will be celebrating graduation next week and many say the ceremony won’t be the same with the recent death of Prince. Her father and sister said Prince had no enemies and had spent the day in-line skating with her kids and niece. “She didn’t deserve this. She wasn’t at a party or at a club or hanging around with crazy people,” said her sister Carlas Prince Gilbert. Prince’s students described her as a caring teacher who took the time to work with them. Working with special education students can sometimes be a challenge, but Dale and other colleagues said Prince was (Continued on page 2)
NEWS Malik Yusef heads panel on gang violence at Brooks High School Former gang members discuss how poor choices impacted their lives By La Risa Lynch Before wordsmith Malik Yusef was a Grammy-award winning rapper producing rhymes for cats like Kanye West, Common, Rhymefest and Twista, he ran the streets of Roseland known as the “Wild 100s.” At age 12, Yusef became involved in gangs. He started using firearms at 13. He attended 68 funerals of his closest friends. In 2002, Yusef buried his younger brother who was killed on 111th and Vernon in a retaliation shooting. “The hardest things I ever did in my life was to carry that man and put him in the ground,” Yusef said, speaking to students at Gwendolyn Brooks High School on the far south side. “It is easy to
Yusef told the students that being a productive citizen or menace to society boils down to choice. And staying above the fray, he added, starts with setting standards and boundaries. “Ain’t nobody coming to your house putting a gun to your head and saying ‘Come out here and hang with us, get in this car, hang on this corner,” Yusef explained. “If you want to climb mountains, you can’t be best friends, boyfriends or girlfriends with somebody that is afraid of heights.” Eric Wilkins is a victim of the gun and gang violence that his Broken Winggz Foundation works to prevent. Family members dispute Officer Lloyds claims that McKinney was waving a gun around in a threatening manner towards him. It’s also something Atty. The amount of gunshots suggest something other than self-defense and lends to the speculation that more than one gun may have been used, according to Gordon. “The report indicates that the math of the Chicago Police Department is wrong,” Gordon said. The case is currently being reviewed by the Internal Affairs Division of the Chicago Police Department. A spokesperson for the CPD said the investigation into the shooting continues. Rev. Dwight Gunn has been a spokesperson for the family. He has stated from the beginning that if an accurate investigation is done the truth will come out and there is a possibility Lloyd could be charged. A call to the village of Robbins by the Crusader seeking comment on the lawsuit was not returned. Officer Lloyd had been suspended but not fired, according to sources. He has never commented on what happened the night McKinney was killed. The Chicago Crusader

Dr. King’s sister cites ‘enormous historical significance’ of Obama nomination ATLANTA — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s sister, Dr. Christine King Farris, Vice Chair/Treasurer of The King Center, made the following statement on the nomination of Senator Barack Obama as the presumptive presidential candidate of the Democratic Party: “Barack Obama’s pending victory in winning the presidential nomination of one of America’s two leading political parties is an achievement of enormous histor-
ical significance for everyone who reveres the dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. When my brother began to lead the American Civil Rights Movement back in 1955, few African Americans believed that our generation would live to see a Black presidential candidate carry the banner of one of the major political parties. But that day has arrived. We will be celebrating the 45th anniversary of his “I Have a Dream” speech on August 28th with a tremen-

Because of you, tonight I can stand here and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for the president of the United States of America.” The historic win has sent a wave of euphoria through the Black community and America in general as supporters cheered at the news after a long-fought primary contest against Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.). But, it is not just an American celebration, but a world celebration, says the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., a former Democratic presidential contender. ‘’The whole world is celebrating today, and rightfully so,’’ says Jackson in a phone call from the United Republic of Tanzania to the NNPA News Service. ‘’It is a glorious, mountaintop moment in American history. It is a great victory for Barack, Michelle and a hard fought campaign. It is a greater victory for America, a redemptive moment, a transformative moment, and so we have reason to celebrate.’’ Jackson, who was in Africa attending the annual Leon Sullivan Summit, said he cried when he heard the news; especially because of ‘’the martyrs who paid such a big price for this moment.’’ Tanzania borders the Indian Ocean, between Mozambique and Kenya, the homeland of Obama’s late father. Exuberant celebrations were taking place in Kenya after the news of Obama’s win. Clinton, who would have been the first woman nominee, did not concede Tuesday night. But it is Obama who will be running in the general election against Republican Sen. John McCain in the fall.
“America needs to be proud of itself tonight, that it has offered the nomination of a major political party both to a woman and to a major party. And the AfricanAmerican has won,” says civil rights icon the Rev. Joseph Lowery, co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “And I think America can be proud that the people have listened to the voice that leads us into a better future and not a voice that causes us to cling to the hostile, conflicting politics of the past.” The root of this historic moment is steeped in slavery, Jim Crow, the struggle for civil rights and the injustices and inequities that still prevail. “Our nominee will be giving his acceptance speech on the 45th anniversary, August 28, of the ‘I Have a Dream Speech’,” says U. S. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), who as House majority whip, is the highest ranking African-American in Congress. He was reflecting on the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Denver in August, where Obama will formally become the nominee. “I just think it’s kind of interesting for the first African-American nominee to be laying out a vision for this country on the anniversary of that ‘I Have a Dream Speech’… poised to turn Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream about judgment of people [being by] the content of their character rather than by the color of their skin. That to me is history worth living for,” Clyburn said. It was during returns from the South Dakota and Montana primaries that Obama crossed the line of the 2,118 delegates needed to seize the Democratic nomination. She won South Dakota. He won Montana. But, it was the last minute decisions of super delegates - party leaders who can cast their delegates in either direction that put him over the line.
dous sense of joy and gratitude to God and to all those who paved the way for this great day. “The night before he was assassinated, my brother said of our long march to ‘the promised land,’ of racial justice and equality, “I may not get there with you. But I want you to know, that we, as a people will get to the promised land.” We have a long way to go before justice and equality are a reality for Americans of all races. But this wonder-
ful moment inspires Americans of all races to embrace anew the vision of a nation united in equality, opportunity, sisterhood and brotherhood.” Dr. Farris also praised the campaign of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for “breaking barriers” and “paving the way for greater participation of women” in American politics, which she said was “also much in keeping with the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE? Believe it or not, it has happened again. Trinity United Church of Christ is on the hot seat, this time because of something said by a guest speaker, Father Michael Pfleger, Pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church. Ironically, Father Pfleger was one of three White people connected with the clergy invited by Trinity to participate in a dialogue about race. Father Pfleger allegedly mocked presidential hopeful Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton during his speech. For this, he has expressed great, great remorse. It’s not enough, apparently, based on the fact that he has received numerous death threats and hate sentiments. What is happening in America? What happened to freedom of speech? And, just as important, what happened to the separation of church and state? If anything, the current contests for the Democratic nomination for a presidential run are arguably the most “religious” in recent history. What does this all mean? Does it mean that the church is no longer sacred territory and that ministers all over the country will be muzzled? Must a potential candidate for elected office interview his minister providing litmus tests about various and sundry positions before he or she decides to run? Even if this is the case, it does not guarantee that enemies of the candidate will come up with something new and unexpected in an attempt to embarrass the candidate. Let’s face it, for anyone who does not have his or her head in the proverbial sand, this does not bode well for America. For the past eight years or so, there have been rumblings about the loss of freedoms in America. The PATRIOT Act rode in on a wave of angry and fearful sentiment after 9/11, and the loss of freedoms in America has been on a downhill slide since then. Ubiquitous surveillance from telephone taps, internet snooping and cameras everywhere, have served to underscore this assertion. And now, this ugly Orwellian trend has made its way into the houses of worship. When will it end, and how long will Americans sit by letting this happen without a whimper, let alone an outcry? And how long will Americans allow themselves to be hoodwinked and bamboozled by the mainstream press that selectively chooses topics that they know will sway the fickle, emotional masses in one direction or another. After all, if the worse thing that can be said about Obama is that his minister and a guest speaker at his church said things that were objectionable, they must not have more significant meat. On this note, it is unfortunate that Senator Barack Obama, who is running quite well uphill against the odds, has been snipped by these divisive scissors. And it is even more unfortunate that he would be placed in a position to renounce the church that he embraced, and that embraced him, for at least two decades. This does not bode well for America, not well at all. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR General Assembly to impact Illinois Families Dear Editor
The Illinois General Assembly faces an important decision that will impact hundreds of thousands of Illinois families – modestly increasing funding to address a critical issue that affects the health of millions of people in Illinois Today, nearly two million Illinois residents are stuck in a dental care gap with little or no access to basic dental care. To address this issue, the Bridge to Healthy Smiles coalition launched a threepoint legislative plan that will provide access to dental care for families, many of whom must wait up to six months and travel up to four hours to visit their nearest dentist. Illinois has among the lowest funding rates for dental Medicaid in the country and has not seen an increase in more than 30 years. In fact, there was a seven percent decrease in 2002 to help balance the state’s budget. The state’s Medicaid budget is $12 billion of which 1.6% is dedicated to dental care. Currently dentists are only reimbursed 46 percent of the procedure cost for treating public aid patients. Bringing dental Medicaid funding rates to a minimal level that will cover the
dentist’s basic cost of service is long overdue. We’re asking for a modest increase of 18%. Our comprehensive three-point plan calls for the funding of 10 new dental clinics, raising funding for Medicaid dental care and offering student loan forgiveness for dentists who practice in underserved counties. This is an issue that spans across our great state and includes more than 40 percent of urban and rural Illinois. Access to care should not be determined based on a family’s income. Twenty-six percent of poor or low-income families visit dentists annually compared to 40 percent of middleincome families and 54 percent of high-income families. We have put forth an obtainable and reasonable solution to the oral healthcare crisis in Illinois. Now it’s up to our elected leaders to act in the best interest of the more than two million children and adults who need it most. Dr. Keith Dickey Illinois State Dental Society

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Finding a Solution to the Sub-Prime Mess By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist There are disasters and there are disasters. The current Sub-Prime disaster will probably go down as one of the greatest tragedies done to working families, particularly Black families. I saw it coming
Harry C. Alford
and predicted it but never in my wildest fears did I think it would be so overwhelming and vicious. People are losing their homes due to bad mortgages/loans at a very galloping rate. Whole neigh-
borhoods in Denver, Cleveland, Baltimore, Atlanta, Prince Georges County and just about every other populated area – small and big are feeling the pain. Legacies, inheritances, family estates are going down the “drain” and becoming lost to “yesterday”. From this comes heavy stress that often leads to marital failure. Children can’t take it and seek escape through drugs, gang activity or straight out crime. Middle class communities turn into “golden ghettos” and the pride and prestige are washed away with for sale signs and vacant homes. 25% of the personal wealth of African Americans is beginning to fade away and no one, including the federal government, is stepping forward to protect these victims. There has been some relief for the “vultures” who caused it but no aid to the actual sufferers. Bewilderment was overtaking my mind. At last, a vision has been created in Somerset, New Jersey. The First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, led by Rev. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr., has gone into progressive remedy. Rev. Soaries has addressed this problem head on. He and his
parishioners proclaimed “Not in our community”. They have spent decades building up this area of Northern New Jersey and they aren’t about to see it go away. They have developed a program known as HARP, Housing Assistance & Recovery Plan. This was brought to my attention by John Harmon, president of the New Jersey Black Chamber of Commerce. He said “Harry, you have got to come and see this personally. It is saving this community and we need to clone it big time.” John is most credible so I cut it into my schedule. Besides “Buster” Soaries is a legend in New Jersey. He was recently the State’s Secretary of State. He doesn’t jive and will tell it like it is in a minute. His congregation is one of the most progressive churches in the nation. They have over 130 business owners amongst them. So here is the deal. Through the church’s communication sources there is outreach to anyone who feels that there mortgage or debt is about to overwhelm them. Sub-Prime mortgage, home equity rip-off, 29 percent financing on a car, etc. are the things that certainly cause this. The victim can call and send out the S-O-S
and an appointment is made. If they fit the criteria, that is, if they are sincere about finding help, the work begins. The church’s Community Development Corporation, CDC, has obtained a pool of money from a local Federal Home Loan Bank. Utilizing that pool an accepted family will have its mortgage bought out from the Sheriff or bank whichever is handling the foreclosure at that time by the CDC. The victims stay in the home and begin making rent payments. These rent payments will be reported to their credit reporting agencies and will begin to repair their damaged credit scores. There is debt counseling that they must go to monthly. There is a stress management session that is also held monthly. They have a “coach” or “accountability partner” that agrees to provide moral support and motivation. Employment overview/enhancement and other factors figure in. Hopefully, not too long, the time comes that the family is ready to try it again. The CDC finances a new mortgage to the family at the same amount as the original note. Keep in mind the family has kept all equity during this period. The new mortgage
will be a simple fixed note at a moral and attractive interest rate that they can afford. The end result is the family (or person) has saved their home. They never left it and, most importantly, their equity is in tact. They probably saved their family relationship and the mental health of all involved. The community keeps its tax base and the neighbors had no devaluation to their property as a result of foreclosure. Everyone is saved from the effects of the evil Sub-Prime mortgage hustle. The money used by the CDC is put back into the pool to revolve and help the next “patient”. It’s beautiful! The National Black Chamber of Commerce is going to adopt this Model. Our chapters will work with their members and applicable church congregations to get this started nationally. Rev. Soaries will be coming to our 16th Annual Convention in New Orleans, July 23 – 26, 2008 to formally present it to the NBCC and from there we will kick it off.

Restoring the American Economy for Working Families: A Way Forward By U. S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) NNPA Special Commentary With the current economic hard times, many Americans are confronted with a whole host of economic and financial of challenges vital to their family’s well being. Sadly, there are hard-working families losing their homes at alarming rates because of predatory lending practices and exotic mortgages. Furthermore, everyday it is getting harder for Americans to fuel their cars or heat their homes because of the outrageous price of fuel. Just last week oil reached an all-time high of $135 a barrel. And the national average price of gas now stands at $3.95 a gallon. Gas has jumped 35 cents in the past month and is 76-cents-agallon higher than a year ago. All the while food prices are soaring to record high levels. A key indicator of our nation’s economic volatility is the unemployment rate. Over the last year The Chicago Crusader
U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore
the U.S. unemployment rate has gradually increased. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, in April the white jobless rate was 4.4 percent and the unemployment rate for Hispanics jumped to 6.9 percent up from 5.5 percent in April 2007. And the African American unemployment rate is nearly double the white jobless rate at 8.6 per-
cent. The Labor Department has reported that new applications filed for unemployment increased by 4,000 to 372,000 last month. The increase left claims higher than the 370,000 level that many economists had forecasted. An even more telling indicator of our country’s economic condition is the unemployment rate among “discouraged workers”, those workers who have exhausted unemployment benefits. In Milwaukee, for example, the unemployment rate among discouraged workers approaches 50 percent. In economic terms, when America suffers from a cold, the African American community gets the flu. Right now America is in the midst of a recession and the African American community is in the midst of a depression. When nationwide the number of African American discouraged workers is nearly 40%, we as a community must aggressively work towards employing those men and women who want to work.
BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY
So what can we do? Within the last two months, the House has passed legislation that would provide an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits for all workers and provide an additional 13 weeks for workers in high-unemployment states. Additionally, Congress recently completed action on a highway bill that will provide funding for the completion of desperately needed infrastructure improvement and the creation of 40,000 good-paying jobs. Furthermore, as a result of direct Congressional action, the President recently announced that he would reverse his previous decision to continue buying oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve which increases demand for oil and bids up the price of gas even further. Now that he has finally stopped this, it will free up 70,000 barrels of oil a day on the global oil market, all in an effort to lower the price we are currently paying at the pump. In addition, the work the Congressional Black Caucus is doing to address our country’s econom-

ic condition is tremendous. In an effort to address the issue of our youth and unemployment, the Congressional Black Caucus unanimously signed a letter encouraging the creation of a summer jobs program for our youth. If we can help provide opportunities to alleviate the burden many parents face when their children are out of school during the summer, we may be able to affect the economic condition of many families. Finally, as a result of efforts made by my colleague and fellow CBC member Congresswoman Maxine Waters, we were able to pass a comprehensive housing crisis bill that will help states and localities purchase foreclosed properties, thereby helping to stabilize our urban communities. Through the actions of everyday citizens, efforts of the Congressional Black Caucus and our colleagues in Congress we can make a difference to help working families in these difficult times and get our country back on course towards peace and prosperity. 5

In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in America, it is important that we understand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for economic independence.
Dr. Conrad Worrill We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance. One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self-reliant and selfsufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world, we find one glaring problem— African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for 6
food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book Race First, which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civil-rights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house. Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and

no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact is, this is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man . . . Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”
We’ve accomplished only onethird of the expected progress that was to be done by now. Yeah, it’s true that the weather has hampered our gross expectations. Even the House of Representatives has not accomplished tasks in every venture that was expected, with the war of Iraq, domestic agendas at every level, with the
Maurice A. Clayton Congress at both Houses. Well, the weather is the true director of the fate of us all since the beginning and more than likely the end of this year and the beginning of 2009. The killings that have gone on so far on the streets of Chicago will continue into next year while the Chicago Police Department still has no clue as to how to curb the killings that has taken the lives of every-
day citizens who happen to be in the way of these animals. Of course there is a way to stop the killing that has gone unabated so far. There are ways but no one has become attentive to the laws that have been on the books for decades called the “Omnibus Crime Act.” There is an abundance of laws on federal and state books that have been around for years but have not been resurrected. It will be the people who come to the forefront to push law enforcement and lawmakers in every state house in the union. It will be the will of the people pushing forward to make the lawmakers and enforcers of those laws to the best of their abilities to end street gangs. The gang bangers do not have the constitutional right to conduct criminal activity upon our streets. Conversely the people have the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. They have been the ones left out of the process of the constitutional safeguards and left by the wayside in America. The U.S. Congress is the culprit in the case of the street gangs throughout America not making a single move towards our ability to cease the rampant rage of street thugs. We have the ability to take back our streets at anytime. God Bless America.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) quest to elect the first African American as President of the United States. Each time I see a Black woman leader seemingly rejoicing in being against Senator Obama, I want to cry, because I know the wrong impression is being portrayed. I would hate to have it said that Black women leaders were on the wrong side of this historic race without countering it. If we don’t counter the image that Black Women are not supporting Barack Obama, we run the risk of having Black men taking what looks like our absence of support personally; thus, reinforcing that "we can go it alone", or are “man-haters” – images that mainstream media
seem to enjoy promoting of Black women. Last September, I witnessed the pride hundreds of Black women had in Michelle Obama when she addressed the members and guests of the National Congress of Black Women; so now is the time to show that as women, we are proud of what Michelle has accomplished professionally, and in her contributions to her husband’s campaign. I invite you to join with me to develop a LONG list of Black women who are supporting Barack Obama for President. SLAP THAT NEGRO PLEASE
The voice of a Negro is back! The only reason Ima was accidentally listening to W.V.O.N. this Saturday was the knob fell off my transmitter and she couldn’t change the damn thing to nothing else. Not even the screwdriver worked. Just as Ima was ‘bout to pull the cord out the wall, this fool Charles BUTT-ler comes over the air and calls Black mothers and their children monkeys— as in chimps, apes and orangutans. At first Ima thought she was hearing thangs, so she kept on listening to this ignorant excuse for a talk show man that W.V.O.N obviously found on the top floor of Jackson’s Park Hospital’s psychiatric ward. Not only was this mug-ugly fool’s comments out of order, he repeated them a couple of times, including to a well known rabble rouser named Eddie Read. Ima sorta laughed though when Lu Palmer’s protégé’ demanded to know if BUTT-ler knew who he was and what he did and this ignoramus said “I don’t care.” What’s even sadder about this entire incident is despite gun-toting BUTT-ler’s admission that he wasn’t high on crack and indeed felt poor, Black women with more than one children look like monkeys when they walk down the street, was that not one brick went flying through W.V.O.N’s window. Now when that white werewolf named Imus called our children ‘nappy headed hoes’ everybody went crazy, including that Black Santa Claus who does the weather on NBC’s Today Show. But here is some illiterate, poor excuse for a human being, Negro man on the open air calling Black women monkeys and nobody does nothing. Well, Ima tried to do something but by the time she made it down to W.V.O.N. on her walker, wasn’t nobody there—not even the primate that runs the station named Melody, who should have immediately pulled this fool off the air. The Chicago Crusader
And Ima means that literally, somebody should’ve walked in that transmitting building and yanked that n*gga off the microphone and beat him with a bunch of bananas. Bet Toby BUTT-ler got a white woman cooking his grits, because no Black man with a Black wife and Black children would ever open their mouth to call no sister a monkey on the radio and not get no hot grits throwed on him when he got home. Obviously, ASS-ler and his boss haven’t looked in the mirror lately. Both got some nerve attacking Black women and their children—no matter how poor they are or uneducated. Have you seen this punk’s still-picture? He look like a smiling gorilla posing for a Polaroid and W.V.O.N’s leader’s face is so flat it looks like a monkey hit her with a Boston cream pie. Since W.V.O.N sold out to UNClear Channel it has gotten worse and worse and it was only a matter of time before they shoved right-wing idiots down our throats. We already got to put up with that coon show that comes on M-F at seven in the evening. They put that bloated, pompous Roland Martin on in the morning and moved the only Negro you could half way stand to listen to on that station in the afternoons. Got rid of John Daye because he was too militant and they got Jesse’s daughter on there trying to be Oprah Winfrey. Now here comes Charlie ASS-ler who calls Black women monkeys and gets away with it. Guess if he was a white man, we’d be making up some signs right now. Have we no insult-level no more? Are all of the “community leaders” on DUH MAYOR and GUVnor Black-ohjo-whatever-it-is’s payroll? Where’s dem Black preachers who grew up po’ and all they had was their dear old mama’s to wipe they behinds? Was they mamas monkeys too? But I guess er’body
is full of chitlins and malt liquor and they got the “itis” so bad, they too sleepy to do nothing no more. Maybe they scared of ASSler who Ima hears got a medal from the Boy Scouts in the highest karate kick. Now Ima got to thankin’ and realize that maybe the voice of the Negro is so cash strapped that they think putting a Negro Republican on the radio to spout foolishness and racist comments will get them some attention. For all dem folk who say W.V.O.N is the only thang we got left in this town—-Ima asks, ‘says who.’ W.V.O.N ain’t nothing but a bit-off Oreo cookie (broke and Black on the outside and UNClear Channel white on the inside.) Just turn it off. – Ima – THOUGHT IT WAS COCAINE
He offered her a sniff and she did it but didn’t get high. He didn’t understand because he bought a cap full in the bathroom of the Glass House on Halsted for $20. Maybe if he’d asked what was in the cap he would have realized baby powder does not have a buzz. – Ima –

WHO IS WHO
Ima hears Reverend Mike Pfleger has denied he is secretly working for the Clinton Campaign after being criticized for making outlandish statements about Hillary in the pulpit of Trinity United Church last week. Now either he’s dumb as all get out or he was high off the communion wine. You tellin’ me that this white preacher didn’t know that his standing where Jeremiah stood and making retarded statements about that crazy white woman and her husband—AND he is on Obama’s campaign committee—would cause an uproar? Bull-doo doo. Ima know them St. Sabina cult members believe anything Pfleger says, but don’t try shoving that stuff down everybody else’s throat. The good news is the priest immediately resigned from the campaign and Obama immediately resigned from Trinity and the Negro intellegensia immediately resigned to a bottle of White Port that they keep under their $2,300 mattresses. What’s next, Trinity gonna have a Black Panther rally instead of Sunday School? Father Mike, who also apologized, knows we’re trying to get that Oreo elected to the White House to see if he can get Flavor Flav off the TV set. Please don’t mess that
up Michael Pfleger or Obama may get mad and put Hee Haw back on just to mess with you. One more thing… Ima now hears the Father’s Day speaker at Trinity will be the president of Iran. – Ima – QUICK QUESTION
Why is Bruce Crosby still trying to be a king maker in Chicago when he couldn’t get a poodle elected dog catcher in Cook County; and why does Bill Doc Walls, who doesn’t quite know exactly what office he should run for in Cook County, listen to everything he says?

Gates Millennium Scholarships awarded to CPS scholars CPS RECENTLY HONORED Gates Scholars during a breakfast ceremony at the Marriott Chicago. Since CPS’ Post secondary Education department began tracking them, the district’s number of Gates Millennium Scholars has increased each year. This year, CPS boasts 27 from 22 high schools – 20 of them non-selective enrollment schools. “This is not a gift. This to me is an extraordinary investment—in your talent, in your work ethic, in your own ability to take your education very, very seriously,” says Arne Duncan, CPS, CEO. Students were also greeted by Mary Williams, Director of Communications and Administration for the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program. “You come to the Gates Millennium Scholars as the leaders for America’s future,” Williams told the group of aspiring academicians. The Gates Millennium Scholarship covers students’ financial needs through the ascertainment of a bachelor’s degree as well as postgraduate study, for as long as the student maintains a good academic standing. 10
Chauncey Harrison, who will be graduating from John Hope and attending University of Chicago stated, “I’ll never forget this. This is something I can pass on to my children. I’ve set a paradigm for my family and future generations. This scholarship is so big, you don’t want it to just impact you.” Scholarships were awarded to 1,000 low-income minority
students nationwide this year. Each of the Millennium Scholars also received a $100 gift card to Office Depot for school supplies. The program was established in 1999. Duncan urged students to come back and visit their high schools and communities. “You guys are living a dream, and there are so many people who are going to be watching you.” A R N E D U N C A N C P S C E O a n d M a r y W i l l i a m s f r om t h e G a t e s M i l l e n n i u m S c h ol a r s h i p P r o g r a m p r e se n t a w a r d t o Courtnie Akande of Morgan Park H.S.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN The second film reflecting the story of NARNI A, a secret land where the people, NARNAIANS, have been hiding from persecution because they are darker people and designed to look wilder than the others which sets the space for a war. In Narnia, CASPIAN, a Telmarine Prince is waken by his professor, Dr. Cornelius. The professor informs him that his aunt, Queen Susan has just given birth to a son and that the prince’s life is now in danger. Knowing that his uncle, Miraz, would kill him in order to be king Caspian flees. Chased by several Telemarine soldiers Caspian falls off his horse and encounters two NARNIAN dwarves and a talking badger in the woods. SEX AND THE CITY As a Darren Star series on HBO, Sex and the City may have come in tidy half hours, but what those sparkling and fizzy episodes added up to, in spirit, was the great chick flick of our time. The show was that rare thing, a fairy tale you could believe in. Carrie Bradshaw (SSARAH JESSICA PARKER), the lovelorn singlegirl newspaper columnist, and her devoted trio of BFFs — randy Samantha (KIM CATTRALL), wide-eyed Charlotte (KRISTIN DAVIS), and neurotic taskmaster Miranda (CYNTHIA NIXON) — all took the fruits of feminism for granted: independence, equality, the right to sleep around, etc. Yet what they found was a new kind of liberation. High on their pink drinks and showpiece handbags, literally high on their designer heels (and on the prospect of turning the search for a mate into another form of shopping), they embraced the holy right to be cosmetic, acquisitive, and — yes! — superficial. Former Chicagoan Stacy Stewart Smith presents Ascension in the Resurrection Series showcasing abstractrealist aerial views from the Eiffel Tower Stacy Stewart Smith utilizes his passion, talent and experience to develop a spiritual voyage that delves to artistic levels of consciousness. The journey began in 1999, with Revelations in Red while the second series was entitled Sanctuary. In 2007, an excursion to Paris, one of the art meccas of the world, enabled these elements to come to fruition. The research manifested the creation of Ascension with multiple themes integrated for the human eye to absorb, appreciate and embrace. The concept of weightlessness is explored in this view from the moving glass elevator of the famous Eiffel Tower. This encounter in the elevator brought forth the spiritual relevance of this magnificent oil on canvas. “I thought about a scripture that tells of a dream that Jacob had about angels coming and going from heaven to earth. And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it (Gen 28:12),” Smith reflects. While post-modern landscapes are a focus of his work, in Resurrection, Smith blended ideas of abstracted bitmaps and pixels. Throughout the series he sprinkles small color spaces of brushed on pigment through stencils. These intrusions represent concepts of transition of time and space. “They convey the struggle of both good and evil.” The correlation which best examples this enigma would be the distortion of a DVD’s projection of scattered images. These tiny squares provide the transition between real and imagined. In essence, this is the integration of abstract and realism. Stacy’s interpretation of Ascension delivers a myriad of techniques that challenge the mind and instill the foundations of art. Smith uses a combination of painting techniques and spared none them in Ascension. The general ground of the fairly large work is flat combining a warm and cool palette of oil with glazes and cold wax. Impressionist techniques, particularly pointillism are employed. Smith does not desire to compete for realism but to The Chicago Crusader

About Stacy Stewart Smith: One of the art world’s emerging fine artists with experience in the local arts community. This Chicago born and New York City resident has used many facets of the arts including fashion design, photography, illustration drawing and personal revelation to his advantage making him an abstractrealist. This art form creates an imaginary construct where the elements of time and motion give meaning to selective mental montage. It occurs in movement and is achieved through memory by glancing.

Ossie’s play, the People of Clarendon County, gives life to a pivotal and little known chapter in Civil Rights history. We meet the Rev. Joseph DeLaine and other courageous African American parents in South Carolina, in their 1950s fight against racial inequality in education. The play was written in celebration of the Supreme Court’s momentous decision, Brown v. Board of Education, outlawing school segregation. It was read once in 1955 by Ossie, Ruby and Sidney Poitier. The reading is directed by Hilda Willis. The three will perform on Saturday, June 21, 2008, at King College Preparatory High School; 4445 S. WORLD OF MUSIC By Dr. Barbara Wright-Pryor ‘Up close and personal’ with Riccardo Muti Newly-appointed CSO music director meets with the press As soon as the news was announced on May 5, 2008 that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra had signed Italian conductor Riccardo Muti as its tenth music director effective 2010, telephone calls and emails began to flow in from around the world offering congratulations. The announcement was made May 5 following the meeting of the CSO’s Board of Trustees where the contract was approved by a unanimous vote. On Monday, June 2, members of the press were invited to meet Maestro Muti. Remarks were given by William Osborn, Board Chairman, who read a letter of welcome from Mayor Richard M. Daley; CSO Association President Deborah R. Card; and Stephen Lester, bassist and chairman of the Orchestra Members Committee. The music director-designate was welcomed by thunderous applause lasting at least one-full minute. Riccardo Muti spelled out why at the age of 66 he chose to accept CSO’s offer. “I could have made music with this great orchestra as a guest conductor,” he stated but after conducting the orchestra for its
Riccardo Muti Opening Night concert in 2007 and taking the orchestra on tour, the chemistry between him and the musicians was readily apparent. Muti paid tribute to the CSO as one of the greatest orchestras of the world, one that performs music at the highest artistic level and one with whom he wishes to make music accessible to the community, to people of different cultures and religions, regardless of their ability to
pay the price of admission. “We must make the message of music as an element of getting together more and more.” This “world-class orchestra and this world-class city” are what influenced his decision. Muti’s musical goals for the orchestra are expansion of its already comprehensive repertoire including music ranging from baroque to contemporary composers, and not just American composers of contemporary works. The greatest conductors and soloists will be engaged. He remarked that the CSO’s standards are very high and that was a tremendous attraction to him. “At my age, to serve the orchestra and city and leave them better is my artistic goal.” Riccardo Muti made it quite plain that he concurs with the community engagement and diversity goals previously embraced by the orchestra and the CSO Association. “The CSO is the cultural ambassador of Chicago, and as such, we shall visit schools and hospitals and prisons.” He added “I come from a place where music is supported by the state” but inasmuch as that is not the case in the United States, he is
Handel’s ‘Orlando’ at Chicago Opera Theater By George M. Williams While many know of Orlando as a city in Florida, the name is derived from an historical figure, Roland (Orlando in Italian), who died while protecting the Christendom of Charlemagne from the heathen. In George Frideric Händel’s opera seria (psychodrama) in three acts, the title role character, Orlando (Tim Mead), is depicted as a tortured hero who loses it when he discovers his true love, Angelica (Kate Mangiameli), is actually in love with another man. In Orlando, as with many of Handel’s operas, roles are written for countertenors, male singers who have the vocal range that we today associate with the alto or mezzo-soprano voice. The roles of the hero, Orlando, and Medoro (David Trudgen), employ the use of such voices. In Chicago Opera Theater’s outstanding production utilizing two harpsichords and a baroque organ, both singers had firm vocal control with great ability to project over the baroque style orchestra led by Raymond Leppard, who conducted from one of the harpsichords. The most charming part of the evening was reserved for soprano Andriana Chuchman effectively cast as Dorinda, also in love with Medoro. Ms. Chuchman possesses a glorious voice and is certainly 14

Anyway, if the food is good, why not?” he quipped. When asked what was on his iPod, Muti responded, “What is an iPod? The root word ‘pod’ refers to horse in Italian,” he continued. “Is that a big horse? I don’t know what an iPod is,” drawing guffaws of laughter from all present. As music director designate, beginning January 2009, Maestro Muti is expected to oversee audi-

Near North Health Service Corporation sponsors Men’s Health Week outcomes. We also urge family and friends to encourage the men in their lives to take part in this week of health activities that could save the lives of those they love.
Whether it’s asking for driving directions or advice on fixing things around the house, many men don’t like to ask for help. But that do-it-yourself attitude can have more drastic consequences than getting lost on family vacations. When men don’t ask for help with their health, their lives could be in danger. During the past 15 years, Near North Health Service Corporation has sponsored Men’s Health Week, which is designed to bring to light the silent health crisis that is facing men all across America, especially men in the African-American and Latino communities. NNHSC encourages men of all ages and races to take advantage of this week of activities dedicated to empowering them to develop healthy lifestyle choices, and to avoid poor health
