Ministers call school boycott Effort to show school funding disparities By La Risa Lynch A coalition of Black and Latino ministers wants Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students to skip the first day of school. Instead, the ministers urged parents to enroll their children into schools in more affluent suburbs like Winnetka’s New Trier High School. State Senator Rev. James Meeks said the action is to protest the disparities in school funding between urban and suburban school districts. “Since funding is our problem here in Chicago … then we might as well go to another part of the state where funding is not a problem,” Meeks said. Meeks held a press conference last week along with 30 ministers on the steps of Gage Park High School to announce the effort. On September 2, the ministers want parents to enroll their children in Winnetka’s elementary and high schools instead of attending their regular public schools in Chicago’s school district. The ministers plan to provide bus transportation for the students, many of whom
will come from the ministers’ churches. Citing a recently released study by Educational Trust, a Washington D.C. thinktank, Meeks said Illinois leads the nation in a funding gap between affluent and low income schools. He noted that New Trier spends $18,000 on each student compared to CPS’ $10,000. Additionally, 80 percent of New Trier’s teachers have master degrees compared to 24 percent in the public schools. New Trier’s average ACT score is 27 compared to 13 for CPS schools, Meeks noted. “…Why are the school districts of Winnetka, Barrington more financially prepared than the school district in Chicago,” he asked. School funding inequity comes from the state’s reliance on property taxes to fund schools, Meeks contends. Such a system creates a funding gap, an achievement gap and “a gap between the haves and the have nots,” he added. Rev. Albert Tyson III supports the boycott. The West Side pastor of St. Stephens AME Church contends urban students should not be discriminated based on home values. “We are going to exercise our option for civil disobedience, if necessary, in order to ensure the welfare of our children,” he said. However, reporters took Meeks to task
on his efforts to pass school funding reforms legislation. Meeks said he proposed several legislations, including Senate Bill 750, Senate Bill 755 and Senate Bill 2288
— all seeking to shift school funding from property tax to income tax. His efforts, he said went nowhere in the General Assem(Continued on page 2)

Hundreds attend survivors of violence picnic on South Side By J. Coyden Palmer Dozens of survivors of violent crimes along with their families and friends shared
in fellowship at Hayes Park on July 20th during an all-day picnic. The event was organized by the Hip Hope Project founded by Ervin “Magic” Johnson. Participants
were treated to music, card games, food and were able to share their stories with other survivors. Joseph Strickland, founder of Metropolitan Area Group for Uniting Civilization was one of the event organizers. He was pleased with the large turnout and said it just shows how many survivors there are in the city. He wants the public to not forget the victims of violence who fortunately didn’t lose their lives. “There’s a lot of publicity around violence and the death of young people, but we also need to recognize the survivors of violence,” Strickland said. “There are people whose lives are affected in dramatic ways; they are paralyzed or mentally traumatized from being shot or shot at. We
need to pay attention to them too because they are still here with us.” Strickland said survivors’ pain can be excruciating for many people. To rehab from the physical injuries of a gunshot, knife wound or being hit with a blunt object is no easy task. He said many survivors also suffer from a variety of mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress syndrome or in cases where someone they were close to was killed in front of them, survivor’s guilt. “People who are paralyzed often go unnoticed in our community,” said Strickland with a sigh. “They have to go through a very serious regimen just to go outside, take a shower or put on their clothes. The mental anguish, financial burden and (Continued on page 3)

Howard U. raises funds for new John H. Johnson School of Communications By La Risa Lynch Howard University has embarked upon an aggressive fundraising campaign to raise $75 million to build a new home for the John H. Johnson School of Communications. The storied journalism school is housed in a converted hospital built after the Civil War. University officials want a modern facility that will give students a competitive edge in today’s changing media market. The current facility is not flexible to keep up with the department’s changing technology needs. The historically Black university recently launched the John H. Johnson Legacy campaign to secure funding for the new facility. University officials announced its

Dates, Ph.D., the school’s communication dean. But the Internet, Dates noted, has changed the industry. Print and broadcast journalism were separate entities, but now there is a convergence among them. Today’s journalist, she added, must have skills in each industries. And a building that centralizes all those genres gives Howard’s students a level playing field, Dates added. “The building that we have right now is designed for a hospital

The announcement coincided with the largest gathering of minority journalists at the quadrennial Unity: Journalist of Color convention. Linda Johnson Rice, Johnson Publication’s President and CEO, was pleased that the university initiated the campaign in her father’s name. Johnson, who founded Ebony magazine in 1945, died in 2005. The new facility, Rice noted, is an extension of her father’s mission to foster Black entrepreneurship. “The whole premise of our building is entrepreneurship combined with journalism…,” said Rice, who hosted a media reception for the school’s alumni during the convention that attracted 7,000 journalists nationwide. “Those are the types of degrees they are going to have when they graduate from the John H. (and) it has six separate wings,” she explained. “All the departments are separated from each other. In an area where there is convergence of technology, for us to be separated as if radio/TV/film is different from journalism is not helpful.” The D.C. - based university wants to construct a $50 million state-of-the-art five-story building. An additional $25 million will be used to outfit the school with smart classrooms, digital labs, and production facilities. Technology is key in equipping young journalists for tomorrow’s job, said Barbara Bealor Hines, Ph.D., professor and director of the department’s Graduate Studies. “You can have all the talent in the word, but if you don’t have the technology to make sure that students are competitive you are not doing them a service with their education,” she said. lishers Association Foundation’s Chair, Dorothy R. Leavell was represented at the reception and is an integral part of the fundraising efforts. The NNPA Foundation has agreed to raise funds to support an NNPA Wing in the new John H. Johnson School of Communications. This wing will represent the “Black Press of America” by providing an enlarged and expanded Converged Lab, now presently operating at the Communications School, NNPA executive offices, reception area, and other multiple use rooms. The department will reach out to university board members, corporate sponsors and alumni to raise funds. The school wants to raise $10 million in initial monies by 2010. They have raised nearly $4 million in pledges and actual money so far. But Attorney Cornell L. Moore, who sits on the Board of Visitors of the Johnson School of Communications, admits the depressed economy may hinder fundraising efforts. “The times we live in right now is extremely hard to raise money because everybody is short; everybody is looking for something and nobody has any money,” Moore said. But the school is banking on Johnson’s legacy to draw big funders. “I’m not a journalist,” Moore said. “I’m just a poor country lawyer. But I recognize the need for good journalism to tell both sides of the story.” The School of Communications already has support from Johnson Publications, former basketball star Magic Johnson, Time Warner and the McCormick Tribune Foundation. Eli Lilly and Co., which co-sponsored the reception, supports the endeavor. The pharmaceutical company also recognized the school’s success. Deirdre Connelly, President of Lilly USA, noted that PR Week ranked Howard among the top schools to recruit job candidates for the public relation industry. Also, the National Association of Black Journalists recognized the university as the number one journalism school. “I have no doubts that the talent, hard work and perseverance will thrive at the John H. Johnson School of Communications where teachers and mentors encourage success at the highest level,” Connelly said. Aisha Chaney, a 2004 graduate, owes her success to the school. Reporters also questioned Meeks if his plan may impact the CPS ability to get state general aid. Meeks debunked a widely held belief that CPS gets funding based on the first school day’s attendance record. “That is an urban legend that we all thought,” he said. “We researched to make sure that we would not be causing harm to the very thing that we are going to help.” Citing a letter from the Illinois State Board of Education’s chief financial officer, Meeks said the first day of school “does not weigh heavier than any other day.” CPS spokesperson Mike Vaughn explained that district funding is based on the average daily attendance from the last school year. The state takes the highest three attendance months to determine next year’s funding, he explained. “We know traditionally that September is one of our highest months of attendance (so) practically speaking the first day of attendance does have a direct impact on our funding for the next

school year,” Vaughn said. A spokesperson for Illinois State Board of Education confirmed that CPS highest attendance months are September, October and November. Those months are used to calculate the district’s funding. For the 2005-2006 school year, CPS received $900 million. However, Phillip Jackson, founder of the Black Star Project, was critical of Meeks’ plan. The Black Star Project is an advocacy group that promotes parent involvement in their children’s education. Annually, the project sponsors the Million Father March, where Black men walk their children to school on the first day. Jackson applauded Meeks’ effort to spotlight the state’s funding disparity. But improving inner city schools goes deeper then a funding issue. He noted that Evanston Township High School spends $17,000 on all it students, but only 35 percent of Black students can read at grade level. “I understand why Rev. Meeks wants to ask kids not to go to public schools, but it won’t produce the outcome we need,” Jackson said. “…We need a comprehensive education plan that includes funding, parental involvement and empowering young people …to want to do well in school.” The Chicago Crusader

But for others the costs can go into the hundreds of thousands and even reach a million. At the time of his injury, he didn’t know there was financial assistance available for those in wheelchairs who needed their homes modified with a ramp or monies to pay for in-home rehabilitation visits. Strickland said getting that information out is a task his organization is taking on. “The purpose of the Hip Hope Project is to help connect minorities who need assistance to the proper local agencies that can give them the financial assistance they need,” Strickland said. “We’re trying to get people back in the race; connect them to where the services are, whether it’s healthcare, getting them employed or something to do with vocational or educational training.” Anthony Cannon attended the event with his nephew and other family members. A former gang member, Cannon said the lifestyle that left him paralyzed is often glorified in today’s culture. Cannon is encouraging others not to walk his path and believes his injury woke him up to the realities of who he could depend on. “People say this is a lost generation and I think they are a generation that we need to speak to more,” he said. “Put a bunch of little kids in these rooms and show them the stuff people with disabilities have to go through day in and day out just to function…this event shouldn’t be just one day but every three months so we can show kids what’s happening. The mascot for Luther High School South is the Braves. And true to their mascot’s warrior mentality, the South Side high school rose to the occasion in the midst of a fight for its very existence. Delegates voted on Wednesday night 23-6 in favor of keeping the school open despite the school’s own Board of Directors voting to close the school that opened in 1951, in early July. Now the hard work will really begin for the school and its nearly 250 students, said triumphant school principal Anthony Rainey. When the results of the vote were announced, parents, students, alumni and other supporters of the school went wild inside the gymnasium. Before the vote nearly 400 people sweated it out through the meeting in which ar-
guments were made for and against closing the school, which is one of only two Lutheran high schools in the country that has a total student population comprised of only African Americans. It was that fact and plea from supporters that was mostly heard as the delegates went into voting. For the past month the school had attempted to rally its nearly 7,000 alumni and past friends together in a last ditch effort to save the school from closing. Another important fact that came out in the meeting prior to the vote came from Dennis Ehrman, who is working with the school on the selling of land that could bring Luther South a windfall of cash. “The one thing that needs to be said here tonight is that while the school might not have cash, they are rich in land,” Ehrman said. “I’ve invested nearly $200,000

what their kids are doing.” Cannon was shot nine times and he said surviving it was the toughest thing he’s ever had to do in his life. He said he no longer is in a gang, but doesn’t see gangs themselves as a major problem. What bothers him is the actions they are taking, being inconsiderate of innocent people caught in the middle. He said he left the lifestyle after realizing it wasn’t all people were making it out to be in terms of loyalty. “When you were gangbanging you had about 800 people saying they would go to jail or hell for you,” he began. “But after I
got shot you could probably count on less than 10 people who would be there for you consistently. I have my good days and bad days, but it’s hard not being able to pick your kids up in the air, or go to events without pre-planning everything.” Despite the obstacles Cannon said he is happy to still be alive. physical injury all together at once really are taxing on survivors and their families.” Eric Wilkins knows first-hand what survivors have to go through because he is one himself. He was shot in May of 1999 while attending a picnic in memory of a deceased friend on 107th and Michigan. Shot in the back and legs with a Mac-10 machine gun, Wilkins spent over six months in Christ Hospital recovering. He had over a dozen blood transfusions, had part of his back cut out and lost a toe that had to be amputated due to bed sores. He is paralyzed from the waist down but is able to walk with assistance from a cane. Wilkins founded the Broken Winggz organization, which is committed to helping paralyzed victims walk again by providing the support needed to overcome their injuries. “It’s important to let other victims know that just because you’ve been shot or even paralyzed that life isn’t over,” he said. “There are other things out here that you can be a part of.” A big part of Wilkins’ activities includes wheelchair sports on a competitive level. He has played all over the world. He said the majority of the African Americans in the leagues were paralyzed due to gun violence while many of the white players were injured in job-related or social activities. He said it’s a sobering reality check for those who don’t think crime is out of control in Black communities around the nation. “We are really chopping each other down and we are hurting ourselves,” Wilkins said. “When you can get all the guys together you can see the reality of the situation.” Wilkins said the financial bur-

One parent said for the $7,500 she’s paying in tuition, she wants to see an upgrade in the infrastructure, especially the athletic fields. An alumnus during the question and answer session criticized Rainey for not informing alumni of the dire financial situation sooner. Earlier in the meeting Rainey apologized for not getting that information out to people sooner. “The lesson that I learned in all of this is that you can’t be too embarrassed to ask for help like I was,” he said. “It proved to be an obstacle.” But for now all is forgiven as students are set to begin classes on August 21. In the meantime the adults and others responsible for keeping the school alive and improving its situation will have a lot of work to do in the coming months, Rainey said. He is looking at this time in the school’s history as a challenge and said it’s time to rally all the past alumni and donors of the school to get it out of its current financial doldrums. “Through all of this I’ve found that I’ve got a lot of people who love and are willing to help this school,” Rainey said. “We will soon be announcing a major plan that will encompass bringing together all of our vast resources.” 3

CLOSURE ON FORECLOSURES The United States is in the grip of a foreclosure crisis which is threatening to topple financial giants. It is said that over 1 million families have loss their homes due to questionable lending practices centering on sub prime loans. This is a devastating turn of events, especially considering the fact that home ownership is a staple of “The American Dream.” Home ownership is the biggest expense that most people will take on. Lending giants are suffering because of this debacle, and the government is moving in the direction of baling them out. This is angering some people, since many feel that the government should also help those individuals who are losing, or have lost, their homes. Actually, the real problem lurking behind this crisis is greed – companies lending money to people that they know will not be able to pay back the debt. This is dishonesty at its best (or worst) and lends great testimony to one of the pitfalls of capitalism, the tendency to find loopholes in order to profit, often at any cost (pun intended). The repercussions of this situation are having dire consequences, and coupled with burgeoning gas prices is bringing Americans to the brink of despair. America is devolving, not evolving, and all because those people with the economic wherewithal have demonstrated little concern for those other than themselves. There are plenty of resources in America, supposedly the richest country in the world. Since that is the case, it would stand to reason that American citizens would be taken care of; that there would be real safeguards to protect people from financial predators. But as we have seen over the past few years, this is definitely not the case, with wickedness at high levels. Remember Enron? Unfortunately, as in too many other cases, it is said that minorities, i.e., people of color, especially Black people, are disproportionately impacted by this mortgage meltdown. Same old story, different words. This is not surprising, since African Americans have been at the bottom of society for so long. Even though great strides are being made, it seems as though you take one step forward only to take two steps backward. The mortgage crisis is certainly two steps, if not more than that, backward. What is not often discussed about this situation is the impact on the personal lives of the people caught up in this situation. Some are actually becoming homeless, and this includes children. In a rich country like the U.S., it is a travesty to have the number of homeless people that we do, and this mortgage crisis will only exacerbate the problem. Republicans are often screaming about “less government” and this is all well and good if the government is doing an effective job protecting its citizens, but since citizens were not shielded from these high level predators, it stands to reason that the government should play a significant role in developing a real solution. Let’s hope that the latest bail out of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will positively impact homeowners rather than just stockholders. Bring some closure to these foreclosures – encourage the government to bail out our citizens in the same way that they are doing with big business! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR American Medical Association clears up an argument Dear Editor: It was refreshing to read that the American Medical Association apologized for the exclusion of Black doctors, for more than a century, from participation into its organization although it was publicly acknowledged more than 40 years ago. The article referred to racist policies that dated back to the 1800s. We should commend the present leadership for this public statement of acknowledgement. We should appreciate the gesture in which it was made and continue to hope that those members of our society pursue through understanding the need for a level playing field that racial or any discrimination impedes. Later the article mentions the lack of African-American doctors in the country out of a population of at least 13% AfricanAmericans there is less than 3% of this nation’s doctors, a statistic given to us by the mostly AfricanAmerican, the National Medical Association. This is why one could question the Chicago area medical schools: Loyola, the University of Chicago, Northwestern, the University of Illinois Cir-
cle, and Rush. They created hospitals that cater to many AfricanAmerican patients. Yet, they show very low number of African-Americans in their medical schools and residencies, the American Medical Association should research. BEYOND THE RHETORIC
When Al Bell Saved America By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist The maturation of the Civil Rights Movement, television and other fast communication vehicles started to change the attitudes and tolerances of most Americans. The second generation of the participants in the great migra-

tion (Southern Blacks to northern and western cities for work in industrials plants), was resolved not to take the abuses of segregation and de facto discrimination. The apartheid that our parents
went through was about to end because we decided to make a stand, a final stand. This nation was going to change or we were going to tear it down. The horrors of the Emmett Teal massacre, Mississippi Burning and the bludgeoning of freedom riders and protesters in Selma, Birmingham, etc. came into our living rooms through network news. It was horrific and terrifying. For me and my crew, the anger simmered and started to fester and mold our attitudes. This nation was messed up and we weren’t going to stand for it any longer. We became very, very angry Black young men. If a dirty cop was going to beat us, he would be dealt with. Revenge was justifiable. As I reflect back on those days that started in the 1960’s, a type of hatred was brewing inside me and all of my peers. We became capable of anything violent. When the Watts Riot erupted in August of 1965, we cheered the brothers on. My football coach approached me as school went into session and said, “Alford, you guys burned down 30% of Los Angeles.” I replied, “30 percent down and
70 percent to go. Wait until next year coach.” Later came Detroit and others and when the system killed Dr. Martin Luther King the whole nation was torched. The term “Get Whitey” filled the streets of this nation and the security of the United States was in jeopardy. Adding to the above was the very evil and ill thought Vietnam War. No level headed Americans, particularly Blacks, would voluntarily join in this conflict. So the so called leaders picked up the pace of the military draft. The draft was pointed at poor whites and every Black and Hispanic male they could find. Over 30 percent of the combat troops in Vietnam and an equal number of the deaths came from a Black population of 12 percent. Every week they were sending back 500 body bags from Vietnam. Five Hundred deaths per week for the Military Industrial Complex and no freedom or dignity for a Black population that was less than free. Let us not forget that the people of Vietnam lost over 2 million citizens – mostly civilians. It was shameful and this coupled with the apartheid that still existed made a young man – who would be drafted – a very
angry and incensed individual. Demonstrations, riots, sit-ins and serious other examples of conflict filled this land. White college students recognized the inequities and started teaming up with African Americans. The Black Panther Party was raising $2 million per week and recruiting Vietnam combat tested vets. The Nation of Islam was lobbying for complete separation for four states from the United States and held more than 1 million members. The Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) was fomenting chaos on all of the major college campuses. This nation was about to crumble. But a strange phenomenon took place. Replicating that old African tradition of putting the messages in the “drums”, aka music, a man by the name of Al Bell started a new addition to the music industry. He started it right in Memphis, TN where Dr. King would eventually be assassinated. Money he made from his growing industry supported the efforts of Dr. King. The musicians he brought on would become folk heroes to the angry Black men roaming this nation and to all others as well. Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett,
Solomon Burke, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Sam & Dave, the Staple Singers, the Dramatics, the Emotions and so many others. The music that came out of Stax Records would become legendary. The music and genre promoted love, unity and togetherness. It brought our thought process into a healing phase. Black owned radio stations prospered from this product that was hitting the streets. Apartheid soon withered and the silly war was finally ended by the courage of President Gerald Ford and the admission of a “system” that had gone way too far in its greed and abuses. We angry young men would mellow and become a part of this mainstream with the intent of changing it and we were successful. This week the National Black Chamber of Commerce gave Al Bell its Lifetime Achievement Award. Quite deserving and I am so glad that we did it while he is well and alive. He is indeed an American Hero. Harry Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Website: www.nationalbcc.org.
Black in America misses the ‘why’ Editor’s note: CNN devoted two nights of coverage July 23-24 to being Black in America. The news coverage was the subject of discussion and writing done by young participants in Youth Speak South Shore, a Chicago-based media literacy and writing program. The pieces were edited by program director and founder Richard Muhammad. Read more at www.youthspeaksouthshore.blogspot.com. By Stephen Gardner The cable television program “Black in America” focused on several different socio-economic issues that affect African-Americans in today’s society. Aired on CNN, host Soledad O’Brien takes the viewer on a journey through various neighborhoods; effectively shedding light on dark issues that have plagued Black America for some time. Issues such as education, marriage, pregnancy, and violence in different communities throughout the country were highlighted, giving the viewer insight into a plight that only the Black community often feels. While O’Brien did a fantastic job telling the stories of various individuals she interviewed, little emphasis was placed on the story behind the story. Not much focus was The Chicago Crusader
given to the “why” in these particular scenarios. In a country where racism is still alive, it is important for White America not only to see, but also to understand our story as well. For too long only a partial testament has been given to the adversity that affects millions of our people on a daily basis. Take an inner-city Houston education scenario as one example: An effort put forth by the community to try (to) enroll dropouts in school is a fantastic effort; one which O’Brien brings to the forefront of her program with adept ease. Here she is with television crews, interviewers, and community activists petitioning at a doorstep for a boy to come back and enroll in school. However, we fail to analyze the context in which this Black boy is placed. A 17-year-old male stands outside with no shirt on, gawked at not only by several people at his doorstep, but also interviewers, television crews and producers as well as the millions of Americans who will watch him through their television screens. And that is exactly how they see him – a young shirtless male, with an apparent disinterest in returning to school, emphasized by the fact that he turns immedi-
ately on his heels and walks back into his house. Now readers please ask yourself this question – how would you react if complete strangers and showed up at your house in the afternoon, bombarding you with pleas to return to your job? Under the gaze of television cameras and reporters that just so happened to be there as well? Most likely you would walk back into the sheltered safety of your humble abode. Why wouldn’t you? It’s safe from prying eyes, is it not? No one can intrude on your personal space there, broadcasting all of your personal business on the public airwaves for millions to see. Of course we do not consider this, with just the mere fact that the boy is finally persuaded to (1) put a shirt on (2) return to school and enroll a full month late and (3) finally as his story closes, we see that after only a day in school, he drops out once again. Surely if only his persistence to drop out were as strong as his desire to learn, he would definitely be at the top of his class right? What could it be that would cause him to drop out not only once, but twice? It is these questions that O’Brien should have been asking the boy before his image was faded to black, written

off as nothing more than a typical failure. To quote O’Brien and CNN, “Almost 50% of Black males do not graduate from high school and only 3% graduate from college.” The only thing this statistic makes me think about is why we are not asking these youth, “why do you want to give up?” It is not enough to show an interest in a perceived failure. More focus must be put on the facts so he is not misunderstood. And better yet, someone should take the time to find the “why.” It is this question that millions of people never ask. And with a television program whose audience must surely constitute a sizable number of White viewers, it is key that this question and its answer be provided. It is not simply that all people are narrow-minded; many are just ignorant of the plight of the Black race. Just think, if the same program were aired in Portuguese, would you be able to relate to it without subtitles? The concept is not far from the same here. An argument can be made that there are completely different schools of thought coming from Blacks and Whites alike regarding issues such as education, healthcare, wealth, and pregnancy. Surely there are a percentage

of Whites who feel the same socio-economic effects as Blacks do in impoverished areas, but still they are missing a key factor, and sadly enough it is the color of their skin. It is not just that they deal with these same issues, but more the perception of those who see them. Surely everyone in this economy has been hit hard by its recent stagnation, but how many Whites actually ever had to consider leaving their own neighborhood to buy fresh produce? These are the kinds of things that tie in directly to the worsening socio-economic condition of Black people all across the country. Not every school is the same. Those schools that lack resources in poor inner-city urban areas cannot produce as many graduates as the magnet school across the river without adequate staffing and funding. But these are the kinds of schools we find in most inner-city urban Black areas. In a world full of choices, not enough emphasis is put on the reasoning behind them. Everyone has a reason for the choices they make, but if no one ever bothers to find out, we lose a key aspect in finding a solution to an overwhelmingly large problem. And that is the answer to the question (Continued on page 19) 5

This is the month we pay tribute to the legacy of one of our greatest organizers and leaders who served the African World Community―
Dr. Conrad Worrill the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Marcus Garvey was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. The organization he founded, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, in Kingston, Jamaica, 1914 will again pay tribute this month to the great legacy of this giant in our struggle. In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in America, it is important that we understand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for economic independence. We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic selfreliance. One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association 6
(UNIA) in the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self-reliant and self-sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world, we find one glaring problem— African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book Race First, which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civil-rights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house. Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United

States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact is, this is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man... Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

MARTIN TAKES ISSUE WITH IMA The man with the gigantic cranium didn’t like Ima telling his business so he took issue with an item that appeared last week about him being passed over for syndication opportunities because of the overall low ratings of his unpopular radio show on W.V.O.N. Apparently Rolly wants our readers to know that it was HIM that passed down “two” syndication offers “last year” and that he has no plans (right now) to turn his Roland S. Martin Report into a syndicated radio show on another station with more listeners and more wattage. After spouting off how he apparently believes everything he reads in a gossip column as truth (“GOSSIP COLUMNS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE TRUE!!!!!!”) …he then mouthed off about all that he was doing including his right-wing newspaper column that shares space with Pat Buchanan and a bunch of other right-wing nut jobs. Talking 100 miles per minute, Roland S. –and the “S” stands for “STUCK UP”…he then threatened to use his low-rated W.V.O.N. radio show to bash the Cr usader publisher Dorothy Leavell—not realizing that Ima don’t mind the publicity, given his rants might even drive one of his three national listeners to the publication. The despised, exDefender editor also rattled off a list of his current media projects but left out a secret radio show he is planning in another city, of which the NNPA is involved. out, now would he? Again, Ima salutes Tom Joyner’s Reach Media for ignoring his supporters (or was it him) who lobbyied hard for him to be the next Tavis Smiley. Big head can’t get enough of himself and neither can the people who actually listen to his show because ninety percent of it is self-promotion, while the other 5 percent is based on what he thinks about somebody else’s shameless self-promotion. You think he can talk himself into the Obama White House? It’s too late to ignore Martin’s Black mass media appeal—he’s controllable, very opinionated, self-righteous, condescending and not afraid to do the white man’s bidding. Look for his new venture to include attacks on Black elected officials— just “to prove he ain’t bias” and “can’t be bought.” Ima wishes Rolly all the best with his media ventures and hopes he makes enough money to move to the moon—because pretty soon earth’s gravity won’t be able to keep his big head up on his neck. With all that said, Ima likes Roland S. Martin –and the “S” stands for STUCK UP. He’s got big dangly thangs. Chicago was the best thing he could have did after fleeing Houston. After all he quickly mastered what others in this town take years to learn— and that’s play the game. He moved to Chicago, aligned himself with the power players; joined the right church; kissed the right preacher’s ashy behind, gained credibility without actually doing anything except put bougie Negroes needing publicity on the cover of the Defe nde r; created an illusion of accomplishment with the Defender; attacked popular and powerful Black icons—and George Bush— to show how tough he is and then he quickly leap-frogged himself into something better and more powerful like CNN, and as backup: TV One; thus leaving a failed newspaper, disgruntled employees and any protestors behind. He even managed to bamboozle his boss, whose street Negro mentality should have taught her better. Martin did it all without making promises, and kept his so-called ‘integrity’ and got paid. Big ups to ole’ big head. Yah’ll be careful—-he might be mayor after a while. You know we stupid enough to prop this Negro up and cast a ballot for him. We accept anything and anybody that comes to the town that smells like a new car. It ain’t until after the car breaks down, you realize you got a lemon. He is the prefect case study for why brothers and sisters in South Africa got special necklaces when nobody was looking. After a
time, people get tired of people using them while pretending to be a Christian and humble and upright. God don’t like ugly and how the wicked do fall. Keep up the good work Roland. -ImaONE MORE FOR ROLAND

The most powerful preacher in Chicago will become Leon Finney—-and all of that money will have to go through him before you Negroes get any of it—and the retired Bishop Brazier will have to sign off on it. They have done an outstanding chess maneuver on you. Your friends and allies became your enemies—and when you wake and realize you went for the okie doke, it will be too late. You have been cut out of the City dollars, you are getting very few County dollars from Todd, Madigan is messing with your state money and now you got to go through Leon’s Barbecue to get federal money. Now you have no leverage and no POWER. Not even Farrakhan can save you. Everything you bring to them from here on out will be made to sound like you are either jealous, out of touch, petty or retarded. And any coalition you build will implode because you won’t truly know who the Axlerod spy is among your clan. Moves are already being made to cut Jesse’s legs out from under him for good using his sworn enemies in Chicago and New York. They think if they help “contain” or “destroy” the country preacher they will become the “Man.” Think again. They call this fattening frogs for snakes where Ima come from. After you all unite to take down that rhyming hot mic man all you little Negro rabble rousers will be stamped out like roaches. The people will get nothing but their Black messiah—until they turn to the book of Revelation and read the warning about deception. It’s been 50 years since we did that..wow! The Parker High School class of 1958 reunion committee will host the 50th anniversary reunion at the Matteson Holiday Inn the weekend of Friday, September 19th and 20th. The reunion weekend festivities will bring back old memories and be the setting for the creation of new ones. Member, Lafredta Lusk is excited to be preparing to meet with former classmates and their friends and loved ones. “We have hosted this event several times. We always have many attending who did not graduate with us but they always have a great time when we get together.”
The original reunion committee consisted of twenty members and was formed in 1967 in preparation for the 10th year reunion. More than 60 girls explore summer tech camp Auto mechanics, welding, robotics and animation classes enticed and stirred the minds of 68 sixth-through ninth-grade girls during the first Girls Tech Summer Camp at Moraine Valley Community College held July 16-18 at the college. The free summer camp allowed girls to explore professions traditionally held by men, which also included law enforcement and computer networking. Moraine Valley students guided the girls around campus and in class while instructors from the college gave them hands-on experience in the classroom. Girls programmed robots, explored under the hood of a car and used computers in a scavenger hunt. In order to plant the seed in the
girls about classes and professions they are typically not exposed to, Moraine Valley acquired two grants totalling $10,000 to start the camp, said Debbie Wills, Moraine Valley admissions recruiter and Girls Tech Camp coordinator. Girls were divided into six teams and spent 2 ½ hours in each session. When camp ended the girls took home a computer flash drive emblazoned with the camp logo. “It was tremendously successful, everyone liked it and some girls wanted it to last a month,” Wills said. “It’s coming back next year. There was a lot of positive feedback from parents and the girls, and everyone surveyed said they would come back again next year.”

The Dark Knight
Julie Walters, Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski in "Mamma Mia!"
A Review by Bonnie DeShong Hello everyone. My name is Bonnie DeShong and, I don’t know if I can say it, I am an ABBA-a-holic. Yes, I have ABBA’s greatest hits in my car and I know all the words to “Dancing Queen’. As I bought my ticket at my favorite neighborhood theater, got my popcorn (you all know how I do it) I was certain that I would have my choice of seats in the theater. I mean, who in my neighborhood would actually want to sit though a show filled with songs by a group of Swedish blond haired folks. I was happy to see that I had to actually look for a seat. Mamma Mia is a story about a single mom named Donna (Meryl Streep), living in Greece, whose daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is twenty years old and getting married. The thing is, Donna has never told Sophie who her father was and after finding an old diary, Sophie realizes that her dad could be on of three men Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth), or Bill (Stellan Skarsgard). Of course Sophie has to invite all three to the wedding (without her mothers knowledge) so she can have her dad walk her down the aisle. To add to the fun, Donna used to be in a girl group and her back up singers and best friends; Tanya (Christine Baranski) and Rosie (Julie Walters) come to the isles for the wedding. Now when you think of Meryl Streep, Pierce Bronson, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters and Stellan Skarsgard, it is not in the context of running around singing ABBA songs. I was really impressed by Meryl Streep because she made it look conversational, fun and her voice isn’t bad. On the other hand, Pierce Bronson looked as if he was in total pain and out of his element. The theater audience, we had a ball. We were all trying very had not to sing the songs out loud (you know how I hate when people talk back to the screen) but when the credits rolled on the screen we couldn’t hold it back any longer. The audience broke into Waterloo and came just short of dancing in the aisle. Since most of us were over 50, dancing in our seats had to do. I had fun. It’s been a while when I have had just plain fun watching a film. The setting was beautiful and romantic, the movie was fun because none of the actors took themselves seriously and I love the music of ABBA. I say SPEND THE MONEY and have some fun. Laughing at Pierce Brosnan trying to sing is worth the price.

The Dark Knight begins its sepia trend as a movable deck of cards filled with as many “jokers” as could be seen robbing banks, threatening and killing those who refused to bend to his vicious will. The opening waits for the perfect moment for audiences to respond to what makes “The Joker” a strange and fearsome character. The deeply creepy clown make-up splattered all over HEATH LEDGER’S face. The star’s death adds a tragic resonance to a turn that nobody could have anticipated. The DARK KNIGHT has fulfilled its intention to be one of Summer 2008’s biggest sequels. To date the film has grossed $300 million and still counting considering this is its third week running. Somehow this BATMAN has to its credit millions of youthful fans that see a horrifying face and persona as evil and beyond and love it. Often said to be one of the best comic book superhero films since the very first SUPERMAN MOVIE with the late CHRISTOPHER REEVE. Once again CHRISTIAN BALE stars as the brooding caped Crusader, with MICHAEL CAINE returning as butler, Alfred, MORGAN FREEMAN, as inventor LUCIUS FOX, and GARY

ENTERTAINMENT Eric Benet is coming to Chicago Grammy nominee comes to Chicago for the Dedry Jones’ experience Interview, mini-performance and autograph signing August 7th 2008 Grammy nominee, Eric Benet, comes to Chicago on August 7th at 7 PM for “The Experience” hosted by Dedry Jones at the DuSable Museum. Eric Benet and Dedry Jones will sit down for an intimate interview which will explore Eric’s entire musical career. The Experience is the quintessential event selected to celebrate the release of Eric Benet’s upcoming studio album Love and Life. Following the interview there will be a meet and greet and autograph signing. They say home is where the heart is, and Eric returned to his Milwaukee, Wisconsin roots to record his Friday/Reprise/Warner Bros. Records CD Love & Life. Collaborating with his longtime production partner Demonte Posey and writer/producer/ cousin George Nash, Jr., Eric completely opened his heart and soul with this decidedly organic production, exercising complete creative control for the first time in his career. Co-writing and producing eleven of the twelve tracks with his partners, “musically and creatively, it’s just as I envisioned it. I wanted to make a record that was a good feeling R&B record, and some of the best R&B for me
Eric Benet growing up had a dash of gospel, a couple dashes of jazz. You
could feel the social consciousness and you could feel where the
artist was in their life. Whatever challenges, victories, blessings that I’m presently experiencing and the fruit of all that, are the songs that I write.” Having fun through the entire process, Eric’s sustained motivation from experiencing love and living life can be heard skillfully weaved throughout every album track. We fell in love with Eric Benet on his 1999 debut “True to Myself ” featuring the Grammy nominated “Spend My Life With You” along with hits including “femininity”, “Spritual Thang” and “Let’s Stay Together. We weathered the storm with him on his 2004 album Hurricane. Now, Love & Life reflects the Eric Benet that feels confident and celebratory about his approach toward happy living. “There’s an energy and feeling that you get from the whole record. The journey is mine but there’s no one who can’t relate.” The Experience is the perfect opportunity for fans of Eric Benet to not only meet the artist but to discover who the artist is and how he approaches the creation of his music. This event is as Will Downing states, “truly an Experience”.

CYO-Chicago Comets-MDYF Reunion honors Olympiad Barbara Jones-Slater Crusader Staff Reporter The program went by many different names, but it had one common goal — it produced great athletes, many of whom went on to compete in the Olympics. Members of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), the Chicago Comets (CC) and Mayor Daley’s Youth Foundation (MDYF) Track and Field teams recently reunited to remember the program that launched their athletic and professional careers. Nearly 40 former members for the first time since the last race was run in 1978 met at a reception held at Chicago State University recently.

White, who was recognized posthumously, was the only athlete from the program to compete in five Olympics: 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972. “They were exceptional,” Hill said of the women. “Either they made the Olympics or they did something so outstanding like Donnis (Thompson).” Thompson, she noted, was the former athletic director who singlehandedly revived the University of Hawaii’s athletic program and co-au-
She captured the gold and broke the world record in the 4 x 100-meter relay with her teammates. She struck gold again at the Pan American Games in 1955 and at the 1960 Rome Olympics. “She represents what we all stand for,” Hill said, noting that JonesSlater was the first person to beat Wilma Rudolph “before there was a Marion Jones and Flo Jo (Florence Griffith Joyner).”
Jones-Slater also received a special award from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. The U.S. Department of Human Services Region V presented the award. Tony Amico, Regional Resource Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a former student of Jones-Slater presented the Olympiad with a medal at the recognition celebration. To help promote track and field,
members of the reunion committee adopted Simeon High School’s girls’ track and field team. Hill noted that even without a proper facility, the team went from 117 to number five in the state —using only the school’s hallway to practice. The reunion committee hopes to establish a multi-use athletic center on the South Side to better promote the sport.

OCTOBER SURPRISE Yah’ll invest in some bomb shelters because Ima was sippin’ pot likker out a mason jar when she overhear that somebody somewhere is planning something real big to disrupt this November’s presidential election. Now the only reason that may happen is because Bush and Cheney ain’t stole enough money yet and they need more time to stick all that money up under they mattresses. But could some type of crazy plot go into affect, thus causing widespread fear and distrust in the inevitable President Barack Obama that white folks will go nuts and vote for John “what’s wrong with his neck” McCain?
