GOODBYE TO JOHN STROGER A Man Who Cared About The Poor By J. Coyden Palmer They came dressed in a variety of ways, some walked, some drove others took the bus, all said it was the least they could do for a man who meant so much to the African American community. Thousands came out for the funeral services of former Cook County Board President John Stroger at St. Felicita’s Church Jan. 23rd. The former leader of the third largest county in the United States died on Jan.

17th at the age of 78 from complications of a stroke he suffered nearly two years ago. Stroger will go down as the most powerful and influential Black politician in the history of the county and his work was shown in the people he touched who came out on a snowy, cold Chicago winter day. “I just felt I had to be here,” said Francine Wilcox, 22. “He gave me my first job when I was only 16 during a summer program the county sponsored. Many politicians wouldn’t give the time of day to a

young person like me who wasn’t eligible to vote at the time. But Mr. Stroger was different. He was a people person and he never forgot where he came from and did all he could to help young African Americans.” Wilcox was just one of many common people to attend the service along with the respective dignitaries representing, local county and federal government. Even those he disagreed with respected the man they just called John. “He could disagree without being disagreeable—John Stroger was somebody you liked whether you agreed with him or disagreed with him," said County Commissioner Forrest Claypool before entering (Continued on page 3)

To be respectful to myself, to my peers, and to my elders To have a positive impact on my friends To be a positive role model to everyone To avoid violence in any way possible To choose my friends wisely To think before I act To avoid gangs and getting into trouble To get involved with Youth Voices Against Violence The goal of Youth Voices Against Violence is to challenge young people to create a safe environment for themselves and those they love. “Through Our Eyes,” they state, “we can perceive peace and harmony in our schools and community.” Youth Voices Against Violence members are from Fenger High School, Julian High School, and local Roseland elementary schools. “We’re tired of losing our classmates, our family members and our friends,” says Youth Voices Against Violence member Damien Tyler, 18. “We want to express our concerns with many levels of government, businesses, and community leaders with the intent to secure more support for youth programs.” Member Taquita Johnson 14, points out that the group wants “to show

the community that many of us are working together in positive programs in our neighborhoods that are helping to end this crisis.” Other Youth Voices Against Violence activities include a DVD about how violence affects their lives and a You Tube production that can be viewed at http://youtube.com/watch?v=4F vidtCCw2U <http://youtube.com/watch?v=4FvidtCCw2U> . Another activity that is in the works is a statewide petition drive directed at state legislators. The DVD and You Tube productions include these sobering statistics from the U. S. Center for Disease Control: • In the U.S. youth homicide rates are more than 10 times that of other industrialized nations. • In the U.S. young people ages 10-14 are murdered on an average of 15 per day. • More young people in the U.S. have died from gun violence than the total number of young men and women fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq since those two wars began in 2003. Youth Voices Against Violence invites young people from Roseland and throughout Chicago and Illinois to take the pledge. “Not one more life to lose” …Young people from Youth Voices Against Violence— Through Our Eyes launched a Pledge Drive during a community luncheon on Martin Luther King’s Day, January 21, 2008 at First Corinthian Church, 11359 S. State St. in Chicago. The youth, members of the Greater Roseland Community Committee, an affiliate of Chicago Area Project, began working together in the summer of 2007 to develop activities that will help stem the violence that is taking the lives of their peers in Roseland and beyond. The motto of the group is “Not One More Life To Lose.” Plans are underway to expand the Youth Voices Against Violence Pledge Drive throughout Chicago and Illinois. Those who attended the luncheon signed the pledge and then stood, raised their hands and took it. The pledge states: I, _________________, pledge to be a non-violent person and to use my influence to promote non-violence in my home, my school, my community, and the world.

agents all of our lives. We don’t want our children to inherit the mess we are in now.” Obama, a graduate of Princeton and Harvard universities, spoke of her humble beginnings, and how despite the meager salary of her family, she was able to attend two of the best colleges in the world. The Harvard law graduate spoke of her experience traveling from city to city campaigning. She said she is campaigning not only for her husband, but for other Americans. “I’m campaigning on behalf of millions of people, like myself, who really want change,” she said. “Do you know what drives me and Obama? It’s our children and all the children in America and around the world who deserve better than what we offer today.” The mother of two girls reflected several times on the need to improve the economy, social change, health care, education, social security is driven by the future needs of her children, and those not born.

“We are the embodiment of sacrifice,” she said. “No other candidate can say this.” “Through my travels, I found out that no matter where I was or who the people were, regular Americans, Black and White, are struggling. We must put America back on its feet. This current form of politics is sucking the life out of wholesome Americans.” The public should stop asking the question of whether her husband can win the Democratic nomination or the White House, she said. “We can win this race if you vote for him to change the direction in which this country is going,” she said. Josh Stroman, student government president at Benedict College, was impressed by Obama’s speech. “She delivers the message of hope so plain and clear,” he said. “You can feel the Obama family living what they speak about. They make you want to work and strive for change. Their sacrifices make you want to do more to help others.”

NEWS

To support Barack Obama is to be on the right side of history To support Barack Obama is to be on the right side of history. The Roman statesman, Cicero, once stated, “To not know one’s history is to forever remain a child.” The potential of Barack Obama becoming the next President of the United States is a uniquely historical moment. The winds of change are blowing. This wind of change, my fellow citizens, is an opportunity for this nation to move forward in a positive direction. America and its liberties is at a crossroad. Today we are faced with enormous challenges in this great nation of ours. Mother Liberty beckons us to respond in this, still new, millennium. We as citizens must pick up the mantle of responsibility and move the agenda forward. Senator Barack Obama is the symbol but, we the people, must be the wings beneath his sail. This nation must move from a dangerous crossroad. It’s an interesting thing about a crossroad. It can lead one into many directions. So the question today becomes which direction is this great nation moving in. Citizenship is precious, and it bothers me when so many Americans do not understand the importance and the power of their citizenship. I am aware of the fact that many citizens are sick and tired of the two-party system, both Democrat and Republican. Both parties have been leading us down the cross roads

of stagnation and redundancy. Someone once wrote, “We are either makers of history or history will make us.” I cry out to you today, my fellow citizens, we have an opportunity to make history with the election of Senator Barack Obama. Some are trying to use the issue of race. But this is not about the color of skin, but as Dr. King would say, “The content of character.” This is a God moment, and if one has any spiritual awareness, the hand of God is moving. For God will have His way in the whirlwinds and in the storms, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. The winds of change is in the air, so thick that you can cut it with a knife. People, the average citizen is struggling to hold on. But I encourage all today, that change is on the way. It is up to you and I to educate our neighbors to the best of our ability and to emphasis the importance of this upcoming presidential election. This upcoming presidential election is bigger than Obama himself. It will determine the destiny and shaping of a nation and a world. The status quo is nervous, as well as the civil rights industrial complex, and I do not blame them for being nervous. For they have been eating at the trough of greed for a mighty long time. Let me say from my heart, that we all need each other, particularly in these desperate times. The old

guard is passing away, and a new vanguard is waiting in the wings. A drum beat of liberty is beating aloud. Can’t you hear it? Can’t you hear the drum beat? I hear the drum beat. I hear the echoes from the past singing “My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.” We cannot afford to let the

opportunity to have a defining moment in history in the presence of a Barack Obama and we laid down on the job. Let us send a message to the living, the unborn, and the dead, that we acted upon the winds of change that we stood in a moment in time and place in history and we gave support to a unique moment in the

Senator Barack Obama drum beats weaken, for future form of Senator Barack Obama. generations will ask the question It’s a wonderful thing when we that in the year 2008 we had an have a moment in history to be

the best that all of humanity can be. To the average citizen, I say, let this be your defining moment and let us be on the right side of history. This upcoming presidential race is bigger than Barack by himself. But he needs our help. Those of you who read my few frail words, let us pray for him. Those of you who can send resources, send resources. Those of you who can bring provisions, food, water, for campaign workers, help. For when we help Barack, we help ourselves, and we help our nation. There’s a beautiful song entitled “A better way written by a young man by the name of Ben Harper. My comments end with the words from his song, “I am a living sunset, lightening in my bones, push me to the edge but my will is stone. Fools will be fools and wise will be wise but I will look this world straight in the eyes. What good is a man who won’t take a stand? What good is a cynic with no better plan? Reality is sharp. It cuts at me like a knife. Everyone I know is in the fight of their life. Take your face out of your hands and clear your eyes, you have a right to dream and don’t be denied. I believe in a better way.” Sincerely, Rev. Anthony W. Williams President of the National Clergy and Laity Network

Marion Jones was batoned; the punishment didn’t fit the crime By Mel Reeves “Why do we add this on to her at a time when other athletes seem to be getting a bye,” asked Marion Jones cousin George Hulce, after U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas sentenced Jones to six months in prison. I couldn’t figure out why I too thought that Marion Jones sentence seemed harsh, after all she did cheat and she didn’t just cheat a little and she also helped a lover in check scam and then I remembered seeing this poor woman on TV crying and I realized that she is indeed penitent, you don’t see that much these days. “It is with a great amount of shame that I stand before you and tell you that I have betrayed your trust,” she said. “Making these false statements to federal agents was an incredibly stupid thing for me to do and I am responsible fully for my actions. I have no one to blame but myself for what I have done. I have been dishonest, and you have the right to be angry with me.” Shame, responsibility for your The Chicago Crusader

Marion Jones actions, acknowledgement of what she did wrong. That’s old school. And I suspect that she wasn’t completely to blame. I suspect that she was victimized partly by making bad choices in men. Her first husband, CJ Hunter a former Olympian (shot put) was caught doping. Her former boyfriend and father of her oldest

child Olympic sprinter pleaded guilty to a check fraud scheme. Even her coaches have been corrupt. Olympic champion and former coach Steve Riddick was also caught in the fraudulent check cashing scheme. Another former coach, Charlie Francis was said to have given drugs to Ben Johnson, the former Olympic 100 meter champion, who was stripped of his win and banned after he failed a drug test. Was she still responsible for her actions of course she was, but there were mitigating circumstances? Lance Armstrong didn’t go to jail and he may have won five Tour De France’s using steroids, Pete Rose didn’t go to jail and sports betting is illegal outside of Las Vegas, Mark McGuire didn’t go to jail and he admitted to using a performance enhancer that has since been banned. It’s clear that Marion Jones made bad choices, but she is not a hardened criminal and should not have been treated as such. Jones defense attorney asked US District Judge Kenneth Karas to,

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

“Look into your heart” But Karas had no heart, he couldn’t see that this woman could be his daughter, he simply saw a black woman who had done something wrong. When the lawyers made the point that Jones has a seven month old who is still nursing and a four year old that need their mother the judges’ response was, “she made the decision to have herself removed from her children.” Say what? No judge, she didn’t sentence herself, you did, and you chose to remove her from her children. She lost everything a person could lose, short of losing their life; her profession, her reputation, her money, her honor and a bit of her dignity (her public appeals made me want to say stop crying in front of these people, they don’t care about you). He accused Jones of affecting “the integrity of athletic competition.” Who is he kidding? “Integrity of athletic competition?” Where has he been? Bill Bellichek the coach of the most successful team in professional football team in recent memory was

Saturday, January 26, 2008

caught cheating on TV. Professional teams fudge their salary caps. Baseball pretends that it didn’t know that steroids were being used in the sport. Basketball referees have been caught cheating. Boxing matches are decided by the whim of judge more often that what goes on in the ring. College football is a sham. Athletes are treated like professionals but compensated as amateurs, while the schools they compete for line their pockets. So why place this woman in jail? Why make an example of her? I can’t think of any other reason beside the good old double standard that African Americans still face in this country. And I might add that her being a woman may not have helped either. Jones pleaded with the judge saying; “I ask you to be as merciful as a human being can be” He was indeed as merciful as he could be, where black humanity is concerned. Poor Marion got a taste of what it’s like if you are black and you run afoul of the law. 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL DEMOCRACY AND EDUCATION Some political and social concepts have feel-good fuzzies built into their framework. Such is the case with the word “democracy.” Americans, who are quick to want to export the American brand of democracy to other parts of the world very seldom stop to ask if what they are espousing will work for the culture in question. For example, if the majority of people in a so-called democracy believe in female castration or in burning people with differing religious beliefs alive, then that “democracy” would be as malevolent as the worst dictatorship. In the former case, however, the cretinized masses take the place of the dictator. The above is to illustrate the point that democracy does not come without a price. In order for it to work in its most enlightened form, the populace must be educated. They must be informed, and they must have evolved to a level of consciousness wherein they rise above petty, mindless thinking. If anything brings this home, it is the current static around the upcoming presidential elections. For the first time in history, a Black man has an opportunity to win the Democratic nomination for president. For the first time, a Black man has captured the broad spirit of the nation wherein many hunger for change. But change is a buzzword – just what does that mean? If the average American gets their “education” from American Idol or a slew of violent movies and/or sitcoms, then any candidate can promise anything, with the spoils going to the one with the best sound bytes or tailored clothing. Someone’s skin color or hairstyle should have nothing to do with whether or not they are elected to office, but in America, these trivial matters are routinely used for decision making. On a related note, Black people should be especially wary of the buzzword thrown around about Barack Obama – “inexperienced.” For one, the current debased state of America is the legacy of “experienced” politicians. In fact, because of the obscene amount of money that must be raised in order to even get one foot in the race, the process is already tainted. Just why is so much money needed? Because the candidate with the biggest bucks has an opportunity to spread the most propaganda far and wide, and it doesn’t take a lot to hoodwink a public whose head is in the make-believe world of television, video games and mindless consumerism. The top line is this: true democracy can’t work until people are really apprised of the issues and can understand the issues. Perhaps this is why so many legislators are loathe to spend real money in underprivileged schools. They don’t really want the “underclass” to become critical thinkers because, in an uninformed state, they are like so much cattle to be prodded in certain directions. Perhaps this is the height of cynicism, but the question remains – why are so many Americans, and especially Black Americans, willing to look the other way while those they elect wildly follow their own materialist ambitions while leaving the Black community in the dust? This critical question must be addressed. True change would require a refurbishing of the kind of education available to the populace so that they are informed enough to know lies and deceit when they see them. With this said, make sure you vote, and vote for your interests. The quality of your life will depend upon it. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To United States of America Presidential Candidates: Hillary Clinton John Edwards Rudy Giuliani Mike Huckabee Duncan Hunter Dennis Kucinich John McCain Barack Obama Ron Paul Mitt Romney Fred Thompson From Russell Simmons, Deepak Chopra, and Dr. Benjamin Chavis January 17, 2008 Dear Presidential Candidate: Millions of people across America and throughout the world are eager to hear and learn how you propose to provide effective leadership as the next President of the United States on the issues of overcoming poverty, addressing global warming and protecting the environment, promoting sustainable economic development, and striving to establish world

peace. We have six specific questions for you to answer. We know that you are aware we are living in a remarkable moment in human history when the vast masses of people on every continent are crying out for a higher standard and better quality of life. The rising consciousness of a growing critical mass of people at the grassroots level is being manifested in the unifying spirit of millions who are praying, demanding, seeking, struggling and working for a real, positive and redemptive change in their own lives and communities. There are millions who are making it abundantly clear that when given the opportunity to participate in the voting process, they will express their political and spiritual will as independent, young, new and conscious voters. BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Access the Power, Affect a Positive Change By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist I learned a very important lesson in 1971, 23 years of age, which seems to be so relevant today. I and over 200 other recent college graduates were fresh draftees

Harry C. Alford for the U.S. Army. We applied and were admitted into the Infantry Officers Candidate School. Upon completion of basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC, we would all go to Ft. Benning, GA

for 26 weeks of formal training. Upon graduation we would each receive an officer commission and become second lieutenants in the greatest army to walk this earth. Something went wrong. President Nixon began the massive pullout of Vietnam and the demand for new lieutenants extremely decreased. Thus, the powers that be decided that they would renege on our contracts. They informed us during our Ft. Jackson stint that they were cancelling the Officer Candidate School and we will have to become enlisted troops for the remainder of our tenure. It was shocking and economically devastating to each and every one of us. As we all sat down on the grass of an open field that evening discussing our hurt and outrage, something clicked in my mind. Private Hoage (hogee) informed me earlier that his mother was the personal secretary of Senator Barry Goldwater (Phoenix office). Barry Goldwater, the presidential candidate who was also a general in the U.S. Air Force National Guard and Chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services committee.

The Plan began. I approached Hoage and asked him to call his mother immediately and plead that the Army was about to ruin us unless Senator Goldwater used his power to stop them and correct the awful breech of contract. He called and his mother told him to call again in two hours after she contacted the Senator at his home. He called and came running onto the field to address us. He said, “My mother has a message from Senator Goldwater ‘Sleep well tonight – tomorrow morning I will stop them from this misdeed’. Many of our fellow troopers laughed in disbelief and chewed Hoage and me out. However, at 11:00 a.m. the next morning our battalion commander came to us and informed us that we were all going to Officers Candidate School after all. He claimed that he and the other officers worked it out with the Pentagon. One phone call and one marker pulled saved the future of over 200 young men. Today, each and every one of us have that Army commission on our resumes and it testifies proven managerial and leadership skills. It would not have happened unless there was a way to access power and then af-

fect a positive change. So here I was last week, waiting to testify before the US House of Representatives Small Business Committee about the lack or void of lending to Black businesses by the U.S. Export Import Bank. The EXIM Bank has been negligent in its outreach to minority owned businesses, particularly Black owned business. How do I get them to start paying some attention to our needs for capital access in the export/import game? I could complain and accuse but they might just ignore me or proclaim they are going to do better but nothing will happen. I thought about the Goldwater experience and how I can apply such strategy to this predicament. When my turn to testify came I let it rip! I showed my outrage and declared that no federal agency or office can go on with daily operations that exclude or show a glaring disparity against the African American population of this nation. It surprised them all when I shouted, “Congresswoman Clarke, I request that the Congressional Black Caucus get involved in this matter and if they conclude as I have that possible discrimination exists within this

taxpayer funded operation that they expunge their existence from the Federal Budget. If they can’t include us, they shouldn’t even exist.” Our sister from Brooklyn, the Honorable Yvette Clarke, agreed to take it up with members of the Congressional Black Caucus and encouraged the EXIM Bank to change their ways quickly. Within the same day, I received an email from two vice presidents of the EXIM Bank to set up a meeting and start a strategy to include African American businesses in their activity. It changed it all! The Congressional Black Caucus has matured into a leadership base of thinkers and doers with the confidence of David and the wisdom of Solomon. It wasn’t always like that, such as in the early 1990’s, but now, here in 2008, we have a bona fide and qualified team that will not be denied. The fight is on! I look forward to emulating the above whenever and wherever it is needed. MLK, the time is getting near. Harry Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. GLBT Communities Also Face 'Enormous Challenges' With HIV/AIDS By H. Alexander Robinson NNPA Special Commentary Like the rest of Black America, Black gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender (GLBT) communities face many challenges; the most urgent of these is the continuing enormous challenge of the AIDS epidemic. The primary barrier is homophobia and an unwillingness to talk openly and honestly about sex. Until we can tell the truth about our sex lives, we will continue to have statistics showing half of the HIV-infected Black men who have sex with men do not know their status. In addition, we face the enormous challenges faced by other parts of Black communities and institutions: poverty and under employment, drug and alcohol abuse, poor access to health care and an epidemic of homelessness particularly among Black gay youth. Our AIDS messages have to compete for time and attention. Black people have made the most progress in the treatment of AIDS. Like our non-Black counterparts, access to treatment has meant fewer deaths and improved quality of life for those who are in care. However, more

The Chicago Crusader

H. Alexander Robinson Black men and women are living with HIV and AIDS than any other group. HIV is prevalent among Black women at rates that far outpace their non-Black sisters. Moreover, statistically Black people living with HIV progress to full-blown AIDS and die sooner than our white and Latino brothers and sisters. African-Americans have made the least progress in sexual attitudes and behaviors. Here we continue to see misinformation and prejudice offered up as fact. Sex is still taboo and homosexuality is still in the closet. There is a mistaken notion that HIV is reserved to certain subpopulations, to homosexual men, their part-

ners and drug users. This is largely because of the reality that HIV continues to disproportionately affect Black gay and bisexual men. We have made a great deal of political progress in some parts of the country, but we still have major barriers in many Southern states. Activism must play a role in combating HIV. However, the activism needed to address HIV and AIDS in Black communities is broader than what was needed in non-black communities. For example, the fact that so many African-Americans still lack access to primary health care and mental health services means we show up not only with HIV infection but with other serious health conditions which have gone undetected and untreated. This requires more than an AIDS clinic—we need comprehensive community health centers. A Democratic Congress certainly offers an opportunity for progress and change. The Democrat’s political ideology supports the kind of policies that could make a difference for our community. The Congress and the administration have done a great deal of damage to our efforts to address

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

AIDS, poverty and to educate our youth. It will take much more than a change of political leadership in the White House or in Congress for our community to have adequate access to quality health care, opportunities for higher education and protection in our workplaces, homes, and neighborhoods. The focus of the National Black Justice Coalition’s AIDS advocacy is on raising awareness of the impact of the epidemic, and the need for greater activism from Black civil rights, social justice, and healthcare advocates. In addition, I personally have a commitment to developing more comprehensive, holistic HIV prevention strategies that address Black gay and same-gender-loving men. HIV activism for Black communities must include gay activism, social justice activism and finishing the job of securing justice, equality and civil rights for all Americans. In working with African-American organizations and community leaders, our discussions about HIV/AIDS are often the portal to real conversations about the impact that homophobia has on the lives of Black homosexuals. However, we risk stigmatiz-

ing Black same-gender-loving men if we only discuss our lives in terms of the impact of HIV/AIDS. At this point in the epidemic, HIV/AIDS and the condition of Black same-gender loving community are inseparable so the conversations must happen simultaneously. Our job is to make sure that we don’t stop there and that we also discuss the need for respect for our families, protection in the workplace and reclaiming our rightful place as leaders in African American community. More people living with HIV need to come out. We cannot afford to continue to fall behind. We must use AIDS as a wake-up call to push for universal access to (Continued on page 16)

Carruthers, Jr. several significant events have taken place to keep his contributions and his memory alive. The first occurred on November 18, 2004, when upon the recom-

Dr. Conrad Worrill mendation of Northeastern Illinois University President, Salme Harju Steinberg, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to rename the Center for Inner City Studies, in honor of our great intellectual warrior, the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies. The community came together on January 18, 2005 to publicly acknowledge this renaming project at a community tribute and ribbon cutting ceremony. The second event took place on December 2, 2005 at the Carruthers Center, located at 700 East Oakwood Boulevard, when a monument created by Master Artist, Professor Ausbra Ford was unveiled. This beautiful monument entitled, “Maa Kherew,” which means “True of Voice” was created in honor of Dr. Carruthers. It is a four sided structure that stands over 10 feet tall with a pyramid at its crown. Each side reflects those ideas and concepts that Baba Jake promoted and lived by. The unveiling ceremony was hosted by the Kemetic Institute and the Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies. Members of the Dr. Carruthers’ family were in attendance at this historic event along with some 250 members of the community. It was an occasion that was truly reflective of the man, his ideas, and his 6

works. The third and fourth events compliment each other and occur in February around Dr. Carruthers’ birthday. The Chicago Council on Black Studies hosts a lecture in commemoration of Baba Jake’s birthday each year on his birthday, February 15th. This year the lecture will take place on a Friday, February, 2008 in the Kemetic Institute Suite at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies, 700 East Oakwood Boulevard from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The keynote speaker for this event will be Mrs. Ifé Carruthers. On Saturday, February 16th from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. the Kemetic Institute will host its Third Annual Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers Conference at CCICS in the Kemetic Institute Suite. The theme for this year’s conference is “Intellectual Warfare: Building on the Tradition.” Presentations will be made by such scholars as Dr. Anderson Thompson of CCICS, Dr. Mario Beatty from Chicago State University, Larry F. Crowe from the HistoryMakers, and others who are continuing the work and ideas of Dr. Carruthers. Admission to both events is free and lunch will be available for purchase at the conference on Saturday. The weekend of events culminates on Sunday, February 17, 2008 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a special annual

gravesite ritual at Oak Woods Cemetery in remembrance and celebration of the life of Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers, Jr. It was on Sunday, January 4, 2004 at 9:55 a.m. the African World Community lost one of its greatest scholars, educator, activist, and “Deep Thinker,” Dr. Jacob Hudson Carruthers, Jr. In memory of, in honor of, and in tribute to Baba Jake, I encourage all those who loved and appreciated his outstanding contributions to the African world to read or reread his classic work, Intellectual Warfare. We are still challenged today to create an educational climate that inspires African youth in America to understand that the purpose of education is to develop the skills and historical understanding of the past as it relates to the present and future in preparation for working for self and the liberation of African people. Our challenge of the twentyfirst-century is to defeat the one hundred year tradition established by white educational leaders who created curriculums for Africans in America designed to prepare them to work for white folks. We should all read or reread Dr. Carruthers’ profound book, Intellectual Warfare, especially as African American History Month approaches. African American History Month is a (Continued on page 16)

Maurice A. Clayton far too long it has been nothing but a game of the “haves” and the “have-nots”. Those who are in the glow of the political powerful, who go on to anoint whomever they want, to be able to have a powerful hand inside the police department for their personal benefit for self and friends. That’s how Alfonse Capone able to outwit the local and county law enforcement agencies. In years past quality candidates for promotions throughout the ranks have been overlooked. It was understood that there was a constant juggle to alter the finalists to assure those who were in the bed of the powerful would end up in front of the line of those to be promoted so that they

can slide quickly into the system in the most powerful units like IAD (Internal Affairs Division), VICE, Investigational Division as a white shirt, etc., etc., etc. The morale within the patrol division is low because of the lack of a true ability to get promoted upward. Often times it is the alderpersons who have commanders relieved and their pick is expected to replace those districts. In past years it was the “Top Cop” who would get the word from the fifth floor of city hall as to who gets jacked up or out. Remember that the “Top Cop” is the one who has to move aside the mayor’s wishes and it is the mayor who would have to get the heat regardless or the heat if necessary…but don’t forget it will be you who will suffer the slings and arrows of the social climate when it comes to crime in Chicago and the well being of the citizens of this world class city and those who traverse to and from it. On the streets of Chicago lives among criminals who recruit and train our children to do their dirty work and dispense with any slip of the rules of the game of crime. Children are fearful of their leaders who resort to strict retribution called “Beat Down”. No law enforcement agency attempting to separate our children from the gang leaders. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) on how to protect, nurture and respect the sacred balance and equilibrium of the environment, the catastrophic consequences of global warming will become a certain destructive inevitability for future generations. (3.) How will you use the office of President of the United States to work with the United Nations and other bodies to respond to the issue of global warming and to protect, nurture and respect the environment? The latest statistical 2007 report from the U.S. Census Bureau on Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States documents the persistence of poverty, income disparities and inadequate health insurance coverage for millions of people. They are suffering from the consequences of the lack of effective

governmental leadership on the issue of poverty. (4.) Specifically, what is your plan of action to eliminate poverty in America? The 2008 U.S. Presidential Election is one of the most important elections in our lifetime. Calls for a real change in leadership, direction, public policy and governmental action are growing daily. The election results from the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Primary reveal the core of concern not only for the need for change domestically, but there is also a growing transformation in the conscience of Americans concerning the issues of war and peace. The war in Iraq should be brought to an end as soon as possible. (5.) What do you intend to do to end the war in Iraq? Most recently, some have unad-

visedly attempted to interject the race card into the Presidential campaign. There are many in the political sphere from time to time that make a reference to the dream and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. One of the important characteristics today about the growing awareness and participation of the “hip-hop generation” of young voters is their transcendent state of mind on the issue of race. In fact, Dr. King believed in “the beloved community” where all human beings are treated equally with mutual respect, justice and love. (6.) As President of the United States, how will you exemplify leadership domestically and internationally toward the fulfillment of “the beloved community”? REST WELL…

EVERY SEAT TAKEN

Ima sends her condolences to two political giants in Illinois politics, John H. Stroger, Jr., and Eugene Sawyer. Both men fought for what they believed in and took the heat for stuff the community didn’t believe in. GET LOST Tony Peracia and Forest Claypool need to go somewhere and set down and shut up. Both of these white boys have been doing all they can to destroy the legacy of John Stroger and derail the leadership of his midget son, Todd. Now that this political giant has gone home, here they come giving quotes to the media like they loved the very ground Stroger walked on. Didn’t Claypool insinuate that John Stroger was ‘faking’ his illness at one point? And Claypool talked until he was KKK-purple about the man’s so-called patronage hiring system, etc. Yeah, yeah. Blah. Blah. Oh shut up—-you two losers. Its okay when white folk hire their nephews and give their sons county and city contracts, but soon as Black folk get a little juice you want to run in the hallway and denounce somebody. Peracia and Claypool are two sore losers who need to go somewhere and set down! TEN EMPTY SEATS

Ima wasn’t surprised to see that every piece of the facility where Marse Daley held a secret Martin Luther King banquet was taken up by every boot-licking, cowtowing, brown-nosing, spineless Negro preacher in the town. Say when they run out of chairs, these old jack legs got to laying all on the floor—-some even had tin cups in their hands. Two or three of them tried to sing a hip hop version of “Dixie.” Given ole boss Daley got the worse record as a public servant this side of Georgia, Ima can’t understand for the life of me, how come these preachers won’t stand up for people, and stand up for issues, rather than scrape and bow at the plantation door? Daley and them don’t even serve bacon no more—they jus fry up a few chickens and them Negroes will be there. If Dr. King was around he’d slap every one of them down with a nonviolent two by four. Here this great man done died fighting against evil policies, and his brethren done all but sold out everything King did for a chance to be invited to a dinner or stand with Ole Boss at a stupid ribbon cutting. Ima hear that next year Daley serving chitlings and grape Kool Aid. Why was Ima there? I like chitlings and grape kool aid—plus where Daley be, the money and jobs be. Ima be too old to work, but she ain’t too old to pocket a few hundred thousand minority setaside money. I’m old not stupid.

of his pants. It will be Coleman’s job to tell Jackson how dire economic situations are for Black folk who live near the League. Given he, himself, is in a dire economic situation, he accepted the job for a whopping $22.17 a week—plus breakfast at Hard Times. SLOW DOWN Folk say the reason a South Side business man done took to talking fast, is because he’s on his way to the Big House and he practicing how to stay alive. You know when you soft, like he is, you got to eat fast, shower fast, talk fast, and pray real fast—otherwise you be caught in a compromising position. Ima hears it won’t be the wire taps that did him in—it’ll be his habit of lying to a federal grand jury—that, and the fact that his significant other told more than she should’ve in Springfield. STILL BLACK? You know Ima was wondering how long it was gonna take Bill Clinton to pull that white sheet over his head and scream out YEE HAW while on the campaign trial for his wife. The former president ain’t pulling no shorts when it comes to Barack Obama. He done talked about the boy so bad, I was sure some of that Black was finally going to come out of Obama and he was

It was very telling that in the packed ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel where Operation PUSH held its MLK scholarship breakfast that there was only one empty table in the entire room and it belonged to Ald. Howard Brookins—the man who would be Cook County State’s Attorney. Nearly 2,000 people put on their Monday’s best and got all teary eyed about helping needy Black chillens go to school. After I got my colostomy bag unstuck from the elevator doors, I hobbled into the ballroom looking for a place to set down. There was only table in the room, No. 119 and it was glowing. Said it belong to Ald. Brookins. No one sat there so Ima didn’t either. Don’t know what was wrong with it—-but it must have been haunted by the ghost of “Not a Snowball’s Chance In Hell of Being Elected

In yet another really smart move, media darling Cheryle Jackson , head of the Chicago Urban League, is about to name former child star and security guard Gary Coleman as vice president of dire economic situations. gonna step to Bill and beat him down like a two dollar trick cheating a five dollar hoe. Instead, Obama went on Good Morning America and suggested he was going to have to go “directly” at the former president— whom Black folk said was Black, despite him letting Rwanda happen. Now that Billy done put on his white, we’re hoping Obama finally removes that gray and don some black for a while. PREDICTION: Hilary will become the first female president in U.S. history after once again Black votes are stolen, miscounted and disregarded. Obama will go into the convention as number two, join Edwards in a ‘unity thang’ and throw his support to Hilary and claim he wants take America back for the Democrats. Black folk will be mad; some will go into complete political apathy; Negro youth under 25 won’t even vote; and Republican white folk (and Roland Martin) will be cracking up—only because you really thought they had ‘changed’ didn’t you. PREDICITION Britney Spears will hook up with Bishop Don Juan who will drop James Brown’s white nonwidow quicker than Cub outfielder in the 7th inning stretch with two months left on his contract. Britney may be out of control and might’ve had a case of public lice once or twice, but she’s

a rich white woman out of control who might have had a case of public lice—and nothing can set her right ‘cept a big, Negro man who can rare back and slap the taste out yo’ mouth before you open it up one time. Ima will be the first to wish the happy couple many good solid years. ROLL OUT? Is there any truth to the rumor that TV personality/news commentator/know-it-all Roland Martin, who is also the host of the worst talk show in WVON history, is on his way out? Sources say no, because if she tries to fire him he’ll sue the boxers off his boss. Contrary to popular view, Ms. Spann seems to enjoy Martin’s belligerent, self-serving rants that serve as news commentary. To each is own. But sources in H Town claim he is this/close to closing a deal with a satellite radio network that will feature a similar show also under his overstated name. Given every chance he gets to promote himself, his show on CNN, how many nieces and nephews he got, what he ate for breakfast, how many nose hairs he had this morning, is it any surprised that Roland would use WVON as yet another stepping stone to media mega-stardom? After all he pimped the name of the Defender to the point he even had right-minded folk claiming he had turned the (Continued on page 16)

It has the largest “crush zone,” the area around which the car collapses in collision. *** Passengers sitting there were 86 percent more likely to survive than those in the front and 25 percent more likely to survive than those in other rear seats.

The law department of the Chicago Police Department sends down very serious points of law but the officers on the street usually don’t ever get a chance to intake what has been researched. I predict that in the near future the police department will be sued by some slick lawyer will prance into a courtroom and become the advocate of children’s rights by Illinois Chapter 35 and win a class action suit. The city will loose millions before it’s all over. If the department begins a vigilant attack against leaders of organized leaders of our street gangsta on every level of the upper echelon of these social misfits who think they are brilliant and overpowering on the public scene. Anytime gang leaders who are in the company of our children, especially those who are not involved in criminal activity are within the proximity of the violation of the law by the criminality of the gang member(s) who fit the violation of laws within the Illinois Chapter 35. The 1st Deputy Superintendent(s) must be persons of such a quality of officer who present programs of actions that should be presented to the “Top Cop” for review who should transfer it to the Department of Research and Development…which I say has sat idle for decades and staffed by the powerful and political. The state of Illinois has on its law book the ammunition to cripple the street gangs by removing the children from them and reduce crime by 50% but the Gang Crimes Unit should be able to compile a list of the leaders of all the street gangs leaders and go after them with the laws in both hands. The detective division should do the investigation work regarding cold cases that are still on the books. The responsibility of preparing to take these cases to court and prosecution.

EDUCATION Chicagoland Teachers to Benefit from BP Grant and Scholarship Program A+ for Energy Program to Honor Innovative Educators Pre-K to high school educators in the seven-county Chicagoland area will be awarded $750,000 in grants and scholarships through the 2008 A+ for Energy program, which recognizes innovative energy education programs in the classroom. In addition to receiving cash grants of $5,000 or $10,000 to implement their programs, teachers will be awarded a full scholarship to attend a threeday Energy Educator Training Conference as well as a Science of Energy kit and other classroom materials valued at $500. BP, a global energy provider, sponsors this unique program designed to empower teachers with resources and tools to implement creative projects that excite and educate students about energy and energy conservation. The Chicagoland A+ for Energy program is pleased to continue its partnership with the Chicago Urban League, Museum of Science and Industry, Network of Hispanic Administrators in Education, Quad County Urban League and ABC 7 Chicago/WLS-TV. The A+ for Energy program is available to any PreK to high school classroom teacher in an accredited or licensed public or private school within Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties in Illinois. Winners are recognized for developing creative and student-focused classroom, afterschool, extra-curricular, or summer programs. While these programs must be centered on energy or energy conservation, they can move beyond science to incorporate reading, mathematics, history, geography, the arts and more. 2008 A+ for Energy winners will join the ranks of 94 Chicago area teachers that were awarded grants and scholarships in 2007. Last year’s winners are encouraged to apply for a Sustainability grant if they are interested in enhancing their current A+ for Energy project in 2008. A+ for Energy has enjoyed unprecedented success since beginning in California in 2004, having grown to 9 locations across North America and impacting more than 411,000 students and

13,470 teachers. “It’s encouraging to know that the program is meeting its key objective, which is to impact students in a very personal way by getting them to understand that energy is a vital part of everyday life,” said Irene Brown, BP America’s National Director of the A+ for Energy program. “We want to help students make the connection from the classroom to the real world. Partnering with teachers is essential to making this happen.” “We are excited to recognize teachers who spark creativity in their students,” said Doris Salomón Chagin, Community Affairs Director for the Chicagoland area. “The more we educate children about various energy options and energy conservation, the more they see their potential to make changes in the world around them. NATIONAL TREASURE begins literally and figurative with a bang, at the Ford’s theatre the night President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Who shot him? Is part of the mystery we begin to explore? Benjamin Franklin Gates (NICHOLAS CAGE) is considered an expert regarding several mysteries. One in particular has been about the Knights of Templar Treasure. Since he was 8 years old, Ben has searched for clues that might lead he or member of his family, his father (JON VOGHT) to The Lost City of Gold a treasure considered too great for a government to own. Yet, the treasure has significant relationship to the Declaration of Independence and many of the clues have only been shared with Presidents of the U.S. There are others (HARVEY KEITEL, ED HARRIS and DIANE KRUGEL who have searched for years with the same goal in mind, to find the treasure, and have run into a blank wall determine to trick Gates in working to uncover where the clues lead to. In the White House, under the President desk; Taking a scene from James Bond, Gates wears his tuxedo under a wet suit as he takes a boat to the entrance of a party for the President His objective is to kidnap the president and hold him long enough for him to get an answer about a clue that can only be answered by the President. From Washington, to Paris and back to Washington to open heavily guarded books in the Library of Congress that contain secret codes leading to additional chess. If only you enjoy mysteries NATIONAL TREASURE keeps you guessing and looking with Ben Gates. One of the most intriguing scenes is when the entire group of treasure hunters relies the latest clues lead to Mount Rushmore where the heads of the Founding Fathers have been carved. The brave hunters find entrances on the mountain to a very unusual cave leading to a more that unusual floor balanced as a puzzle by geneses, to keep hunter s from the gold NATIONAL TREASURE is entertainment and enjoyable.

Schubertiade Chicago 2008 MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC

An all-day festival of Franz Schubert’s music on February 2nd, 2008 presented by the PianoForte Foundation It has long been a tradition throughout Europe to celebrate the genius of Franz Schubert on the anniversary of his birth, January 31, 1797. The PiFoundation has anoForte brought this tradition to Chicago for the past 3 years, and each year has received an enthusiastic response from the artists and audience alike. This year’s event, on February 2nd, promises a marathon day of music making from a variety of chamber ensembles and soloists in the intimate PianoForte studio. Also returning this year is the “Schubert Café” in an adjacent studio which will feature Viennese coffee and pastries furnished once again by Julius Meinl! Guests are invited to attend a performance, take a break

to visit the café or one of the many galleries in the Fine Arts Building, and then come back to the salon between performances for more live music. Inspired by Schubert’s own famed musical soireés, PianoForte seeks to create the same intimate space where musicians and music lovers alike can relax and savor the company of their peers. The size and acoustics of the PianoForte studio are suited to just such an event. Musicians from the CSO and other professionals have been attracted by this casual musicmaking atmosphere, which encourages inspired performances of string quartets, piano trios, duets, four-hand piano, solo piano, and Lieder. Among others, this year’s line-up will in-

WFMT 98.7 FM has agreed to produce a radio program using live recordings from the Schubertiade Chicago 2008. Such a program will be compiled

after the festival and is slated to include interviews of performers and organizers. We are delighted about this collaboration, which will help distribute this wonderful event to a wider audience and will fuel our plans to broaden the scope of the festival in years to come. Since its 2004 debut, PianoForte Chicago, and now the PianoForte Foundation, have been contributing to the rich musical life of Chicago with a variety of salon concerts in their beautiful Fazioli piano showroom. In addition to weekly Friday broadcasts at 12:15 on WFMT, the PianoForte Foundation presents three different concert series on Saturdays at 3 pm, encompassing

solo piano, chamber music, and a very popular jazz series. PianoForte is located on the eighth floor of the historic Fine Arts Building, just blocks from Symphony Center, the Art Institute, and Millennium Park. The beautiful salon setting, a first-class piano, and amazing talents have all contributed to the success of the PianoForte concert series. This is a unique opportunity for music lovers in Chicago. We would like to thank our sponsors, which to-date are: the Austrian Consulate General, the Austrian Trade Commission, The Julius Meinl Group, Josef Manner & Co, Blue Plate/Rhapsody Restaurant, and Hilton Hotels/The Drake.

GOODBYE TO JOHN STROGER (Continued from page 1) the church. “He was a gentleman. I think we are going to miss him. That type of civility in politics is missing too often.” Stroger was born May 19, 1929 to Ella and John Stroger, Sr. in Helena, Arkansas. He attended an all black elementary school and high school at Eliza Miller High School, earning his diploma in 1949. Stroger attended Xavier University in New Orleans earning a B.S. degree in business administration. He came to Chicago and immediately took an interest in politics and the Democratic Party. After earning a law degree from DePaul University, Stroger was elected as the 8th Ward Committeeman. He was elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners in 1970 and during his tenure

headed every major committee before he was elected President of the Board in 1994 making him the first African American to do so. During his time as president, Stroger was able to see a lifelong dream fulfilled, the completion of the new county hospital that has been named in his honor. Healthcare for the destitute was his top priority and main reason for getting into politics said his son Todd, who now serves as the board president. The issue was close to the elder Stroger’s heart because during the days of Jim Crow laws in the south, he lost a brother while in route to the local Black hospital when hospital that wouldn’t treat him turned them away. Mayor Daley, who was a longtime ally of Stroger’s called him a

“groundbreaker” in Chicago politics that will be truly missed. His voice wavering at times with emotion, Daley said Stroger could be defiant and often laughed when others didn’t like what he was doing or how he did it. He said Stroger was one of the most decent people you will ever meet in the world of politics. “John could dig-in with the best of them on an issue, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t willing to compromise to get a deal done,” Daley said. “Not only did he care about the people in his community, or those who were poor, he cared about all of Chicago and all of Cook County.” After the 2-½ hour funeral, a long procession of cars escorted by Cook County Sheriff ’s Police and various municipal agencies, proceeded down 87th Street

though the Avalon Park community Stroger lived in until his death. Many residents along the route bowed the heads; men removed their hats in honor of a man many of them knew personally. Some overcome with emotion, told reporters stories of how they came to know Stroger and fear what his loss will mean to the community. “He always looked out for the common man and I’m not sure if his son or others really understand that,” said Andrew Smith, a local bar owner. “This man hired a lot of African Americans to political jobs they would have never gotten. In my view he is the godfather of Black politics in Chicago.” State Rep. Marlow Colvin (DChicago) is one of Stroger’s disciples. He began working for Stroger in the 8th Ward before he

went on to get a degree from Chicago State University. He has seen Stroger’s personal touch with the people first-hand. “We’d be at a baseball game, and someone would come up and say, ‘Mr. President, I want to thank you for what you did for my son. You helped get him into law school,’” Colvin recalled. “Or, ‘You got my son at Merrill Lynch his first bond deal.’ When they'd leave, he’d say, ‘I don't know that lady from Adam, but sometimes you help people because you have the capacity to do so.’” In addition to his wife of nearly 50 years Yonnie, Stroger is survived by his son; Todd, daughter; Yonnie Lynn and two grandchildren. Stroger was buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park. The Chicago Crusader

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

Energy, passion, electric, grabbing, jaw dropping artistry Aaron Sledge is the guy that goes on before the last act leaving people saying “He’s the one that should’ve closed out the show!” According to those who know him well he was born into a life of greatness as the son of Richard and Peggy Sledge. Aaron had music in his D.N.A. right from the start. As a young boy Aaron was raised in the Washington Heights community in the vicinity of 92nd and Vincennes on the city’s south side. Aaron says, “Music has always been in my life!” The Prayer Band General Assembly Church was where you would find young Aaron on Sundays. The youngster would fill his days learning and playing as a student at his neighborhood school, Mahalia Jackson Elementary. As he entered Percy L. Julian High School as a freshman, Aaron worked very hard securing two part-time jobs first as a parking attendant with GEO Parking followed by a stint as a bagger at a local Jewel’s Foods Store. Sledge continued to work while in high school as he finished and completed his designated curriculum to obtain his diploma. This talented trendsetter is a proven writer, singer, arranger, performer, and producer as seen through one of his endeavors as the minister of music for at the House of Peace Church where Reverend and Senator James T. Meeks is the pastor. Aaron’s vision has been to unveil a new face in the music industry. While

Aaron Sledge preparing to release his first solo project, he desires to open doors for other artists who just need an opportunity. Aaron has appeared on The Jay Leno Show with artists such as Nelly, Avant, Akon, and Jazzy Pha. He’s worked with Smokie Norful on the Celebration of Gospel and appeared on Yolanda Adams’ “Day by Day” DVD recording. As a songwriter, Aaron has been

featured on Mario’s multi-platinum “Turning Point” album for the single titled, “Here I Go Again”. He has worked and gleaned from such great writers and producers as Warryn Campbell, Harold Lilly, Ramsey Lewis, Nephew, Tyrese, Michelle Williams, Eric Dawkins, and Making the Band 4 just to name a few. Nothing makes a better lead or solo singer than being a strong

background singer, and if you follow Aaron’s career you will find him in every genre of music today by having worked with the likes of Christine Aguilera, Smokie Norful, Yolanda Adams, Kevin Vasser, and Bridgett Campbell whose music run the gambit. Aaron believes that his music is a breath of fresh air, and others would agree using terms like “refreshing” and “easy listening” to describe what they’ve heard. “Hold On”, the soon to be released (February 12) single is proof of that. The smooth melodious sound accompanied by the lyrics that remind you to simply hold on encourage one during times of reflection. The sign of true musicianship is that of one who can create not a new sound, but a culture of music that is non-exclusive and yet consistent with the times. Aaron is at the forefront of making sure it does just that. The music of Aaron Sledge has a unique and definitive purpose, and though it entails much it can be summed up in just a short brief statement. The mission of the music is to RESCUE and RECOVER those who are lost, those who have been wounded, and those who feel that they have exhausted every avenue in changing their lives. “The sound of the music could be referred to as oxygen music giving life or giving breathe to a new genre of music giving hope. Three years after he graduated

from Percy L. Julian, Aaron went through a stage of homelessness. It was through this stage of his life that he truly found the courage to hold on and the strength to lift his head up as he set out to build a great music empire, which has now enabled him to become not only a great songwriter, arranger and producer accruing numerous amounts of accolades worldwide including awards for platinum selling records, but also an artist on the Sky High Entertainment which is releasing his debut release titled “Da Light” scheduled to hit stores February 12th. When Aaron has time to leisure, he plays basketball, watches movies, and enjoys creating more great music. “Da Light” is very uplifting and speaks out to those who need a message of hope and empowerment. The great chemistry between this release and purpose is that the music delivers the positive message with the kinds of beats and melodic form that can be heard anywhere. Aaron’s mission is to rescue and recover those who have been lost and ridiculed by cynics who say there is no hope for Generation X and this project is the project to make a difference.

ter said her father loved Chicago and the people he served as alderman and mayor. She said he was stung by the heap of criticisms that came from the Black community, who often called him a “sellout” or “Uncle Tom.” “Since he came here from Alabama he was in the 6th Ward and Park Manor,” said daughter Sharon McGill. “He loved that community. I want people to remember my father for being a kind man who loved the city and its residents and not just for him being the replacement to Mayor Washington.” Although he was primarily supported by white aldermen like Dick Mell and others who fought against Washington, Sawyer turned out not to be the politician they thought he was. He wasn’t controllable as they thought he might be. Sawyer, during his brief time in office, managed to get passed many of the programs Washington had unsuccessfully tried to get

through, including a comprehensive gay rights ordinance. Friends and family say many took his quiet demeanor the wrong way. They say because he was non-confrontational didn’t mean he didn’t have a thought on a particular issue or wouldn’t stand up for what he believed in. Sawyer often joked with reporters after they started calling him “Mayor Mumbles.” He told them he still managed to get things done without being as boisterous and flamboyant as many of his mayoral predecessors. Sawyer’s death came just days after another longtime political icon’s death. Former Cook County Board President John Stroger, who was a fraternity brother of Sawyer’s and who was alderman of the 8th Ward adjacent to Sawyer, also died after complications from a stroke he suffered nearly two years ago. The irony in the two deaths had many longtime Chatham residents shaking their heads in amazements.

Former Mayor Eugene Sawyer dies By J. Coyden Palmer

After suffering from numerous health problems caused by a series of strokes, former Mayor Eugene Sawyer died in a suburban hospital Jan.19. Sawyer, who replaced the city’s first African American mayor Harold Washington after his unexpected death in 1987, was 71. After losing to Mayor Daley in the 1989 election, Sawyer left politics and kept a low-profile as he went into private business. “Eugene was not the kind to go out and seek the limelight,” his brother said. “He was very quiet but very intelligent and astute at getting things done.” John Sawyer, Sawyer’s brother and family spokesman, said the former mayor had been in poor health since December, following surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for a perforated esophagus. He suffered a series of strokes over the past month while receiving care at a hospice facility The Chicago Crusader

in Hinsdale and fell into cardiac arrest while at the center, John Sawyer said. He was taken to Hinsdale Hospital, where he died. Sawyer’s reign as mayor took place during a turbulent time in Chicago politics. Washington had just been reelected and many in the African American community felt his second term held lots of promise as he had begun to make progress with the City Council that often wouldn’t vote for his proposals. Many felt it was blatant racism on the council’s part. Washington died in November of 1987 from a heart attack and Sawyer, who was alderman of the 6th Ward, was voted by the council 29-19 to serve out the remainder of his term. But many African Americans felt he was being used as a political puppet by the same adversaries who made Washington’s job difficult. Instead, a number of African Americans supported Ald. Tim Evans (2nd) who had served as

Eugene Sawyer Washington’s floor leader. But in the end, nearly a dozen Black aldermen combined with others in the council selected Sawyer as their leader. Despite their disagreements, Evans said the two maintained a friendship. “Gene and I were friends before Washington’s death and we remained friends afterwards despite our political disagreements,” Evans said. Despite his infamy in Chicago political history, Sawyer’s daugh-

After running around the town like he was some kind of Walter Winchell of the ghetto, Roland hooked up with the publisher of the Blue paper and Ms. Spann, despite the fact that he was being protested almost every day

by community leaders. Then Roland run up in Meeks church and got cover there. Then he run up under folk in state government and got some credibility there. Ran up in all the Negro establishment joints and got cover there—-and now he’s run up in WVON where he can heckle every last one of them from his silver microphone—under the guise of

being an independent thinker. How is a Negro who used to run with Pat Buchanan and Thomas Sowell be considered an independent thinker. Last time Ima looked those two fools were playing for the wrong team—-a team that Rolly Roll seemed all too happy to be affiliated with. Well, Ima just hope that whatever deal Martin gets it comes with head-shrink-

ing potion. You ever seen that boy’s noggin? Head so big Ima surprised his neck aint snapped from the weight. Aint got no forehead, he got an eight head. VERSE WHAT? Ima was standing in the lobby of a senior center when she happened upon two local preachers who were visiting their mem-

bers in the lunchroom. One called the other a word that rhymed with “other-trucker” and then that one turned around and called the first preacher a “donkey’s hollowed out place.” Well, the female human parent copulator then told the sturdy and domesticated animal inlet that he would thrash him within a very small degree

of his period of existence. Said he would plummet his devoid of light posterior. That’s when Ima opened up her bible and tried to see if she could find any of those words between Genesis and Revelation. Do you know that sh*t wasn’t in there. Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.

In the first chapter, Dr. Carruthers instructs us by pointing out, “Thus, those who have been waging the long war to liberate African history and culture have been fighting the following two battles: (1) an international war against the European intellectuals and (2) a civil war against the colonized African spokespersons who are trained by Europeans to undermine African independence. The war is truly, as Anderson Thompson says, a battle for the African mind, or as Asa Hilliard and the First World Alliance put it, a battle to free the African mind.” Those who believe in the just cause of the long war to liberate African history and culture must read and reread and study Dr. Carruthers’ most insightful observations, wisdom, and his

As the founding President of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), Dr. Carruthers helped shape an organizational format for African Centered scholars, teachers, students, and the overall African Community to have a collective vehicle in which to pursue the building of the African Centered Education Movement. His leadership, in this regard, has been monumental and inspiring to hundreds of scholars, teachers, and students throughout the African World Community. In this connection, Dr. Carruthers book, Intellectual Warfare, prepares us to function in the twenty-

first-century with a sharper understanding of our challenges as an African people. The book is organized into five sections. Part I: The Nature of the War; Part II: Defenders of Western Civilization; Part III: Intellectual Civil War; Part IV: The Champions of African Centered Thought; and Part V: Toward the Restoration of African Civilizations. In the preface of Intellectual Warfare, Dr. Carruthers explains, “These essays reflect the thought of the ‘Chicago group’ and the ‘African Community of Chicago.’ I was simply a vehicle through whom ideas flowed. Even the mistakes are our mistakes rather than mine alone. The conceptualization of our work as Intellectual Warfare emerged out of the actual battles in which we were engaged.”

HEALTH

Diabetics have help in fighting depression Access program will screen 10,000 patients A recent study revealed that a good percentage of diabetic patients would rather die 10 years sooner than maintain a healthier diet and workout regimen. The reasons for their decision were that taking a variety of prescriptions or not being able to eat their favorite foods was too great an undertaking. Consequently, according to the study, diabetics would rather eat as they pleased, forego taking insulin shots and medications, and enjoy life as they had in the past, even though their lives may be shortened. The study conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also revealed that for many diabetics the discomfort of treatments was as bad as the complications that could result from non-treatment. Some experts say, however, that sentiments such as these can lead to depression. “It’s a two-way street, and the combination of having an incurable, potentially life threatening disease that decreases quality of life, and that requires so much personal, emotional and financial investment to maintain health is overwhelming,” said Dr. Hugo Alvarez, Access Community Health Network Deputy Medical Officer. “These conditions can render patients hopeless about their conditions; and at the same time these feelings can lead to less adherence with treatment, diet, medications and follow up.” Access Community Health Network and the Aetna Foundation are working together to address this issue. The Foundation has awarded ACCESS $25,000 to sponsor a

program that looks at depression in patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes. The irony of it is that with less attention to the condition, uncontrolled diabetes starts to take its toll over time, and this can compound complications, with patients losing even more hope, Dr. Alvarez said. “They feel that whatever investment they have made has been useless, and they find themselves only making half an effort.” The Aetna Foundation grant will help ACCESS develop a program that incorporates culturally-appropriate depression screening and treatment as part of primary care treatment, so that depression can be treated and patients can remain committed to controlling their diabetes and avoid long term disabilities. The aim of the program is to eliminate barriers for low-income patients, while helping to improve their mental and physical health. ACCESS health centers in the Little Village and Des Plaines areas are part of the pilot program, because of the number of diabetics receiving care at these two locations. These health centers have culturally competent staffs to serve diverse populations. “Reducing disparities in health care has always been an important issue for Aetna,” said Martin R. Castro, Vice President of External Affairs for Aetna’s Diverse Markets Strategy in Chicago, who oversaw the grant-making process. “We are pleased to fund ACCESS’ effort to support the creation of medical homes for patients and build a model bilingual, bicultural program focused on the intersection of

depression and diabetes. The American Dream is premised on a healthy community--we are pleased to do what we can to help

MRS. DONNA HARPER, an avid WVON radio listener responded to Dr. Payne’s call for 100 women to come to his office for a free clinical breast examination during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Despite Chicago’s first winter snow storm December 5, 2007, she came to the Department of Public Health Roseland Neighborhood Health Center, for her follow-up mammogram as scheduled. She is to be congratulated for her participation in the fight against Breast Cancer. Dr. Payne now issues the “10,000 Clinical Breast Exam Challenge.” Ten thousand women are encouraged to immediately seek examinations from their health care providers and overcome the fear of self examination. Regular exams and early detection saves lives.
