Frontrunner still unclear in Clinton/Obama race By J. Coyden Palmer There is still too much controversy hovering about to determine just who leads in the race for the White House in the Democratic Party. Obama’s impressive showing on Feb. 5 sent a strong message to those who have doubted his candidacy; he’s in it to win it. Obama’s attempt to become the country’s first African American President took a big step forward with big wins in Georgia and Illinois. Here in his home state, Obama beat Clinton by doubling the amount of votes of his competitor. The numbers were pretty much the same in Georgia, where a large African American voter turnout pushed him well past Clinton. But even more importantly than the popular vote, Obama leads Clinton in the amount of delegates. At Crusader press time Obama had 838 to Clinton’s 834 delegates. In order to secure the party’s nomination, Obama will need to garner 2,025 delegates. “By winning a majority of delegates and a majority of the states, Barrack Obama won an important Super Tuesday victory over Sen. Clinton in the closest thing we have to a national primary,” said Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe. “From Colorado and Utah in the West to Georgia and Alabama in the South to Sen. Clinton’s backyard in Connecticut, Obama showed that he can win the support of Americans of every race, gender and political party in every region of the country,” Plouffe said. “That’s why he’s on track to win the Democratic nomination, and that’s why he’s the best candidate to defeat John McCain in November.”

McCain has established himself as the frontrunner in the Republican Party as he now has well over 700 delegates. Other Republican candidates Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney aren’t doing well and Romney is considering leaving the race after meeting with staffers on Feb. 6.

In the meantime Obama told his supporters gathered downtown at the Hyatt Regency on Super Tuesday that the work that put them in this position must continue. His supporters say the fact he raised $34 million last month in contributions compared to $14 million for Clinton

The crowd, which consisted mostly of Caucasian, Latino and other non-Blacks gathered together indicating that their support for the candidate was based upon the issues and policies he represents. Brookins loses bid in State’s Attorney’s race By J. Coyden Palmer In a hotly contested race, Ald. Howard Brookins (21st) finished third in his bid to become the Democratic nominee for Cook County State’s Attorney. Brookins, who was endorsed by the Crusader, finished

behind Ald. Tom Allen and Anita Alvarez, who won the nomination. She made history becoming the first woman and first Hispanic to win the Party’s nomination in a State’s Attorney’s race. She will face Tony Peraica in the general election. Peraica ran unopposed on the Republican ticket.

Larry Suffredin (13th) trailed Brookins with 109,637 votes, according to the official totals made available on the County’s Board of Elections website. First Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Milan, who was endorsed by the retiring Dick Devine and defense attorney Tommy Brewer, finished with 27,311 and 21,126 votes, respectively. Brookins entered the race as the frontrunner because of the strong support in the African American community. But none of the major newspapers endorsed him and his challengers brought up the fact he once had to be brought into child support court because of a money dispute with the mother of a child he fathered. The complexities of our American society have created enormous strains on American citizens. Regardless of what the experts say, America is in need of a healing. This cannot be a band-aid approach. In this young nation of ours, just over 200 year, the moral compass finds itself still pointing in the wrong direction. The remedy is moral penicillin that is sorely needed to be injected into the psyche of this nation. We have an opportunity as citizens to individually and collectively change the moral order of America in this upcoming fall presidential election. Dr. Martin Luther King once wrote a sermon entitled, “A Knock at Midnight,” where he described that it was midnight in the moral, social, psychological, and spiritual psyche of his current generation. This generation has been given an opportunity to heal itself. I challenge us all to inject ourselves with the penicillin of a new hope, faith, and love, realizing that God is able to conquer the evil’s of history, and His control is never usurped. It’s time to heal ourselves, our homes, and our communities. All of us must move beyond our own selfishness. The election of a Barack Obama for President gives us an opportunity for the voices of the masses to be heard regardless of race, color, or gender. If you’ve

ever been sick before, sick to the point that you were so weak you didn’t know whether you were going to live or die, and the doctor prescribed the proper medication and within a period of time you felt stronger and vibrant again, then the election of Barack Obama is the medication that this country has long needed. This does not mean that all of our problems will go away, but we as American citizens have an opportunity to be heard, and the remedies can be applied to the pressing issues that face us as a nation. There are those in this nation who benefit from the sickness that goes on in our nation. When our institutions are not performing to the best of their abilities for the American people, there are those who govern this nation and say, “All that is needed is a band-aid approach.” That is malpractice to the highest degree. In closing, this message is written to encourage this generation to seek a higher ground of understanding. And for a season, let us put our differences aside and begin the process of healing ourselves and this nation. The poet James Russell Lowell was right when he wrote,

He was on his way back to D.C. for an important vote in the Senate and would also meet with voters in the District as he gets back to campaigning. Before leaving he urged his supporters to continue the fight. “Not only did we play to a draw — we won more delegates, we won more states,” Obama said. “We are in a fierce competition and we have many more rounds to fight.” With at least another month and a half worth of primaries around the country, Obama said he hopes to have the nomination wrapped up by the time the Democratic Convention takes place. The Clinton campaign said it

Their candidate believes in the end she will be the nominee. While Obama won more states on Super Tuesday, it was Clinton who won large states like California and New York. Her supporters believe that will be the difference in the race, but acknowledged that at this point there is no telling who is going to win.

Obama recognizes that he is still the underdog in the race. He won’t deny that Clinton has more political experience than he does, but he doesn’t believe that should be the only factor in the race. He also said having former President Bill Clinton and older Black politicians supporting Clinton in

Black Consumer Report Boosts Power of the Black Press By Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief LAS VEGAS (NNPA) – Black consumers, with an annual worth of nearly $750 billion in buying power, are disrespected on a daily basis by merchants across the nation. Now, Black-owned newspapers - which regularly endure discrimination in ad sales and publish weekly news stories of racial profiling, false accusations and disparate arrests of customers in retail stores, shops and businesses have a new tool by which to empower those local and national reports of injustices by disclosing the worth of African-American consumers. “Every time you do a story about a grocer who disrespected a customer and that customer calls and says, ‘They do this stuff all the time…And that customer calls and says, ‘I want you to write them up because I’m going to sue them,’ when you do the story, just put in, ‘According to Target Market News, Black Households in Philadelphia [for example] spent $25 million on tires, on gasoline, on groceries,” says Ken Smikle, president of Target Market News, which annually releases “The Buying Power of Black America.” Smikle encouraged Black publishers convening in Las Vegas last week, “Put the number in there so that people will get a sense of their value and their power. Nobody else is going to do this. And if you do it, I guarantee you that you will have power unimagined.” The meeting room at the glitzy Luxor Hotel, packed with member publishers of the National Newspaper Publishers Associa-

tion(NNPA), the Black Press of America, responded with excitement, some ordering two of the reports for sales and editorial departments. ''This data will help you to improve your bottom line,'' NNPA Chairman John B. Smith Sr., told the publishers. ''And for those of you who are already doing well, it will show us how to do even better collectively.'' Among the figures in the report – which lists incomes as well as expenditures: Total earned income among African-Americans has risen from $719 billion in 2005 to $744.1 billion in 2006, a 3.5 percent increase. It also shows a nearly 90 percent increase in earned income among AfricanAmericans over the past decade, from $392 billion in 1997. It also reports that AfricanAmericans spend $3.5 billion on consumer electronics a year, among the highest level of expenditures. That includes $1 billion on TVS, VCRs and related equipment. The figures also show Black women spending $143 million on shoes annually while men spend $139 million. They spend even more for their children, the report shows - $251 million for girls footwear and $269 million for boys. Parents in the audience, including Washington Informer publisher Denise Rolark Barnes, who has two sons, concluded that the purchase of pricey athletic shoes might account for the higher dollar amount spent on boys footwear. “Every shoe manufacturer in the world, from Nike to Florsheim, should be doing business with us,” Smikle says. The report, available for order

at www.targetmarketnews.com, lists annual purchases of everything from wigs and hair care products to groceries and condiments. A former editor with the New York Amsterdam News, Smikle drew chuckles from the audience when he said he considers himself to be “an honorary member” of the NNPA. He articulated the tribulations of the Black Press.

“Give yourself some power by giving your readers their power,” he says. Smikle says the report, which gives both local and national configurations of Black buying power, is also a powerful tool for advertising sales for the Black Press, which is often a target of discrimination by local merchants and major corporations. “It really would be nice if Black

newspaper sales folks were the ones to come in to say, ‘I’ve got something new for you that nobody else has,’” Smikle told the group. Using the Barack Obama presidential campaign as an example of the energy that could come about with new information, he said, “It’s time for us to energize our base...We must engage this country in a conversation.”

Brookins loses bid in State’s Attorney’s race though the situation was quickly resolved, Alvarez and others implied that Brookins would be soft on enforcing the state’s child support laws. Brookins wasn’t moved by the negative campaigning and focused more on righting the wrongs of a State’s Attorney’s office that has allowed dozens of innocent African American men to be wrongly convicted for years. “I want to thank each and every one of my supporters for backing me and being out there in the cold, rain and snow, on our continued quest for justice,” Brookins told his supporters at the Parkway Ballroom on 44th The Chicago Crusader

and King Drive Tuesday night. “We put up a good fight and came up just short.” Brookins said the negative campaigning along with limited resources had an effect on his campaign. He continues to stress the need for justice to be served equally and fairly throughout the county. child was raped, choked and poisoned with roach spray. Alvarez said she is committed to helping victims of crime get the justice they deserve no matter the race of the defendant. She said she also committed to prosecuting police officers, politicians and others in positions of power who may commit a crime. Her opponents attempted to categorize her as a status quo candidate with ties to much of what was wrong with the State’s Attorney’s office over the last 20 years. (D-1st) defeated William Walls III in his congressional race. In the 26th State Representative District where there were five candidates vying for the right to represent the Democratic Party William D. “Will” Burns beat out Jesse Jackson, Jr.’s choice, Kenny Johnson by more than 5 percentage points. Incumbent Elga Jeffries lost to all candidates having received only 11.92% of 27,269 votes cast on Super Tuesday. Jeffries had stood in the face of adversity when she voted on behalf of her constituents against the ComEd rate hike in the Fall of 2007. Other winners included Jesse Jackson Jr., (D-2nd) and Danny Davis (8th) and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. 3

EDITORIAL SUPER DUPER DREAM TEAM These are exciting times. That great sporting event Super Bowl Sunday 2008 just captured the imaginations of a lot of Americans. Following closely on the heels of that great sporting event is another one, only the stakes in this game are much higher. As Americans wield their voting power, the results will ultimately determine the quality of life for many people in this country for years to come. Just look at how things have changed during the past eight years – the poor have certainly gotten poorer and the wealthy fat cats are reaping bonanzas from tax breaks that are favoring them. As we have pointed out in past editorials, this is an historic election. The buzzword is change, and with the Democratic candidates being Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, whoever gets the nomination will certainly be a first for America. The Democrats have an opportunity to nominate the first African American or the first woman. Both candidates are smart, and they certainly couldn’t be less astute than the current head of state. Upon closer examination, though both candidates would represent a change in direction for America, a Barack Obama nomination would represent even greater change. After all, if you think about it, the same two families have dominated politics in America for the last twenty years. First, we had George H.W. Bush, who served one term before losing to William Jefferson Clinton. After eight years of President Clinton, we ended up with George W. Bush, who is currently in his eighth year at the helm of the country. The Clinton and Bush families, therefore, have been the big names in American politics for a solid two decades. If we consider the fact that George H.W. Bush served as vice president under Ronald Reagan, the years stretch even further back. It is almost as though America has slipped into a quasi-monarchial state. So when Hillary Clinton talks about change, it would probably be more symbolic than substantive. A Barack Obama candidacy, on the other hand, if successful, would represent a real departure from the status quo. A win on his part would represent a maturing of America, and would send a signal to the shadow monarchy that the American people want something different, something new. It would be a huge change. Whatever the case, the American people stand to win or lose depending upon the outcome of the 2008 presidential election. Ideally, if this were a perfect world, and if the candidates were really for the country and not for themselves, the Democratic candidates would unify in order to guarantee a win. We must remember that there is no guarantee that the Democrats will win, because America still has a very strong Republican constituency. The Dream Team, therefore, if egos could be pushed aside, would be an Obama/Clinton or a Clinton/Obama ticket, depending upon who wins the Democratic nomination for president. That would almost guarantee a Democratic victory and would be the harbinger of real change. Now think on that! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Give a shoe box gift Dear Editor: Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors in Chicago, many children around the world have something to smile about. Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project, collected 18,884 gift-filled shoe boxes from local residents during last year’s collection season. These gifts from right here in our community are now on their way to children who are hurting around the world. With the donations of shoe box gifts from churches, individuals, businesses, and community groups, Operation Christmas Child will be able to hand-deliver over 7.6 million gifts to children in more than 100 countries. Many of these distributions are taking place right now. On behalf of our community, I would like to thank all the local collection sites for providing locations for collecting the gifts and all the volunteers who served with this amazing project for children. To everyone in the Chicago area who packed a shoe box gift, please be encouraged by the fact that these simple gifts will serve as powerful messages of joy and hope to needy children around

Katrina Judge to Victims: Get a Better President! By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist It all seemed pretty simple. It was evident to all that the US Army Corps of Engineers had practiced malfeasance in the stewardship of levees in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Harry C. Alford They had done it since its beginning in 1928 and up to the roar of Katrina they had neglected their duties in establishing and updating a levy system that would withstand the harshest hurricanes and floods.

So there they were, this team of litigators representing over 489,000 Katrina victims in a class action lawsuit against the federal government and its Corps of Engineers division. The judge was sympathetic. Clearly, he stated, the federal government neglected its duty and was at fault. Millions of people suffered because of the malfeasance. However, he went on, the law as it was written in 1928 exempts them (federal government, Corps of Engineers, etc.) from damages and the plaintiffs cannot be awarded a penny. That’s the way it goes. If you want to improve this condition you need to elect a President who will order his administration to conduct itself in a responsible manner and adequately protect its citizens. This doesn’t shock me. It is the same legal reasoning when it comes to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It is the duty of the U.S. Attorney General to enforce this law. Any discrimination in the business practices of a federal agency or an entity receiving federal funding or benefiting from federal regulation must be dealt with by the US Attorney General’s office.

A citizen or a collective group cannot sue to enforce it. If you don’t like what the Attorney General is doing then you need to replace him. The logical way to do that is have our President fire him or we fire the President through the electoral process. Thus, we have a harsh reality. We must get totally involved in the political process if we are to hold the federal government accountable. The only big chance we get comes every four years and we need to prepare for it in a very open and complete way. As we elect a president and he assembles his administration we must be certain that we have very competent people working in that administration and the President himself must have the strength and commitment to enforce all civil rights laws and to ensure that the people are protected. So far in this upcoming presidential election has anyone brought up the enforcement of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act or the mandate that the US Army Corps of Engineers must become accountable and ensure excellence in their duty? We overlook it and let them off the “hook”. It reminds me of when the state of California was shutting down

their minority business programs during the 1990’s even those that were receiving federal money. We asked the Clinton Administration to step in and force them to reopen the diversity programs for highway construction. They sent their boy out there to face Caltrans and make them back down. As a Los Angeles Times reporter informed me, it was very embarrassing to see a federal official get verbally whipped by a state official who conditionally receives federal money. In the end it was apparent. We did not have a President who had the resolve to enforce Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and Californians of color have been suffering ever since. I guess Clinton said to himself so what, they still love me. Yes, the poor coloreds do. Until we and all Americans get the resolve to hold a President accountable to all the people, we will have more Katrina disasters. There will be more wholesale and illegal discrimination by state and local governments. Our population will not be proportional to our share of the economy. Mandated services afforded to the general public will continue to miss our neighborhoods. We won’t get healthcare

and decent educational opportunities for our children. Corrupt police and lazy stewards of our environment will be allowed to continue their existence. If you have noticed, not one question has asked how any of the current candidates will prevent another Katrina disaster. They don’t have a clue and will never be able to prevent it until we demand that they start considering. Why can’t we begin to demand resolutions and accountability during this election cycle? Let’s make a great president by writing the “script” right now. We should not stop until we find one who can do the job. Something tells me that we might just have such a person. But it won’t happen unless we create the job description up front. “This is what must be done!! Can you do it? How? We will be watching you every step of the way. If you fail, you must go on the next round. We won’t stop until we get the right one.” Until then, it’s business as usual. Early on in my writing career, if a charity or AIDS service organization asked, I would appear, and not charge a fee or charge a reduced fee. AIDS was considered the “gay disease.” Then we heard other people had it, then we would hear the terrible stories about what [sicknesses] people got who had it. It really hit home in the early 1990s when I began to lose some close friends. It spurred me to write, not knowing what else to do. I admit I’m a very squeamish person, and I didn’t like being around illness. I didn’t feel like I could be around someone who was very sick. It scared me, and I didn’t know what to do. So, I would write letters to my friends who were ill. Still, I couldn’t let them pass away without them knowing how I felt about them. So I wrote. That’s what I could do. One of those friends told me I had a gift and made me look at what I could do with my writing. I eventually went to see the friend and the whole experience made me grow up. ber how hard it hit me when I read in a national newspaper for the first time that one of the fastest growing groups of people with HIV are urban Black youth. Somehow we’re not getting the message to young people. I hope through my writing I can help make people more sympathetic, more aware. They can see examples—good and bad—that my characters set. I hope they can especially learn from the good examples of my characters, when they help each other. Maybe people will read about them and do some of those ‘giving things.’ E. Dr. Conrad Worrill Up until recent years, there had been a scholarly debate among European intellectuals, joined by some Blacks, on what they referred to as the peopling of ancient Egypt. What this question really posed was, “Who were the ancient Egyptians?” Were they Black, white, or mulatto, etc? This issue has been at the core of European history or better yet European historiography (the science of how history is written) for more than two hundred years. This framework of European hegemony over the history of the world has had a devastating impact on African people and on the African mind. It is in this context that we understand the intellectual devastation of the European conceptualization of the world order. We should understand this in relation to our movement for an African Centered Education and our Reparations Movement that are aimed at helping our people come out from beneath this European intellectual assault and educate and repair ourselves. Let me use renowned African deep thinker and scholar, Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers, to help clarify this 6

subject by revisiting a paper he wrote entitled, “Race of Ancient Egyptians.” This paper gives us the insights we need to understand this dilemma. Dr. Carruthers observed that, “The doctrine of white supremacy was launched by philosophers like David Hume who asserted in 1749, ‘I am apt to suspect the Negroes to be naturally inferior to the whites.’ This position was expressed in a different context by Montesquieu about the same time.” We are guided by Dr. Carruthers when he explains, “In the Spirit of the Laws, Montesquieu asserted, ‘it is impossible for us to suppose these creatures to be men, because allowing them to be men, a suspicion would follow that we ourselves are not Christians.’ Montesquieu was justifying the enslavement of Africans which was one of the major reasons for inventing the doctrine of white supremacy.” Upon further examination, Dr. Carruthers reveals— “Obviously the emerging doctrine could not gain credibility among those who were familiar with the traditional wisdom among Europeans that the ancient Africans of Egypt had achieved a very high level of civilization and had transmitted to the ancient Greeks many of the major ideas considered a part of Greek civilization.” Dr. Carruthers explains, “Several decades after the founding of the concept of white supremacy George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel supplied the solution of this latter difficulty when at the beginning of the 19th century, he asserted that Africa was ‘not a historical part of the world.’” Finally, Dr. Carruthers quotes Hegel to demonstrate the ultimate in European intellectual arrogance— Hegel stated, “Historical movement in it— that is in its northern part— belongs to the Asiatic or European world… Egypt will be considered in reference to its western phase, but it does not belong to the African spirit.” Through this conceptualization Dr. Carruthers reveals, “Thus, Hegel took Egypt out of Africa and Africans out of Egypt. He also removed Africans from history.” As an outgrowth of this kind of thinking by European scholars, the field of Egyptology began to emerge. Egyptology as a field of study is the creation of the European mentality, which seeks to

gather evidence (artifacts and antiquities) that supports the idea of the European origin of civilization. Egyptologist have literally attempted to remove Egypt from the geographical confines of Africa and reposited it within the geographical domain of Asia, in an area that is even now referred to as the “Middle East.” The removal of Egypt from Africa serves a twofold purpose. First, it leads to the obvious idea that Egypt is not a part of Africa therefore its population could not have been Black. Secondly, it serves the purpose of implying that civilization did not begin with the Black race. Fortunately, we have always had Black scholars among us who did not get trapped in the European conception of the world. It started with men like Hosea Easton, Henry Highland Garnett, and Dr. Martin R. Delany who “took the biblical myth of Ham and used it to establish Blacks as the authors of the great Nile Valley civilizations.” Also, “They… used ancient European works such as Herodotus, Diodorus, and whatever modem works they could find. This tradition has been an honorable endeavor and has taught us much.” The old scrappers, according to Dr. Carruthers, “are still among us slugging it our as per our beloved Professor John G. Jackson.” Through the works of Senegalese scholar, Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop, Dr. Théophile Obenga, Dr. Yosef ben Jochannan, Chancellor Williams, and others, the origin of the ancient Egyptians should never, ever be a question for African people. This question has been resolved. We should be clear that ancient Egypt or Kemet (as the people who lived in this area called it. Kemet means the city or community of the Blacks) and the ancient Egyptians, or more properly, the Kemetic people were BLACK. Diop points out that Herodotus “after relating his eyewitness account informing us that the Egyptians were Blacks, then demonstrated, with rare honesty (for a Greek), that Greece borrowed from Egypt all elements of her civilization even the cult of gods, and that Egypt was the cradle of civilization.” Our scholars, deep thinkers, and researchers should never again raise the question of who were the ancient Egyptians. This question has been resolved. Clearly the people of ancient Egypt / Kemet, were Black people!

I’m quite sure that all or most of you have looked into the Bible about some of the things I have written. Again I’m going to give you a hint about the book that is

I suggest that you seek out the origin of the Bible and how it was constituted and by who and when. The only clue I will give you is that it was in the year 312 AD and in the world where fragments scattered all over the Christian world and a single person though it would be meaningful that the writings of the Apostles acts and writing should be incorporated in that book along with the letters of the Apostles alone with other information that could be seen as meaningful. In the beginning of the birth of the bible there were only 50 copies initiated and put into the best text writing. All of the previous was done after the conference at Nicea where all of the members of the hierarchy agreed to the written word of the beginning of Christianity. There was no consistency about its beginnings, etc. etc. How go fourth and discover the truth about the Holy Book . . . all of the truth. A well quest for your vote. A whole slew of old, bloated politicians didn’t need no Viagara Tuesday night after watching the election returns come in. Ima was sure they were so happy they were up all night. Everybody from Jesse White to Emil Jones and Mike Madigan were skinning and grinning after having their candidates run and win various seats around the state. The biggest upset was the little midget, Will Burns, beating a bigger midget, Kenny Johnson, in a controversial race for the seat formerly held by the late, great Lou Jones. Congressman Junior backed his former staff member and party promoter, Johnson, while Jones backed Obama’s former staff member and vertically challenged Burns. More money was pumped in that district than either one of those guys would have ever stood to earn in ten years. The people’s candidate, Phil Jackson and long-time district workhorse Elga Jefferies were blown out of the race. Nobody thought Phil Chada had a chance, given it was rumored he was actually put in the race by Jones to be a stalking horse. All Ima wants to know is how Eddie Read plans to spend the half a million dollars he allegedly got from Jones and them to renege on helping Elga to help Burns? Another question, so now that Madigan is openly backing Black folk again—making him the ultimate King Maker over Jones,, it stands to wonder which one of them hogs got the biggest cahones? When Emil put a rival up against Monique, she ran to Marse Madigan and begged him to keep them yanks away from her The Chicago Crusader

Well, our dummy lost the State’s Attorney’s race. Ima is actually breathing a sigh of relief, given folks had been telling me all this time that Brookins’ entire campaign was a sham operation. Some say the boy was put in the race by ole’ Marse Daley himself to siphon off the Black vote. Is this how a no-name Hispanic woman with a very unpleasant face emerged as the Democratic nominee for Cook County State’s Attorney? I mean she was Devine’s candidate. And given, that office has a responsibility to investigate the 5th floor and everybody else in the town, are you surprised that a deal could have been made to keep a Daleyite in that seat? You know Brookins’ campaign started in his daddy’s funeral home. Isn’t that the perfect setting for a dead campaign? My question is, again, what did Madigan have to do with it and why would he send his top aide to be Brookins’ campaign manager? You folk know this is still Illinois and in this state and in this town we got some strange politics. Why would an alderman who fought so hard to keep his seat just a year ago, turn around and run for a county-wide office knowing he didn’t have the money or infrastructure in the first place? Why would an alderman who is working on all this economic development—to the point where his own wife (who aint that easy on the eyes either) has major real estate deals pending—-give that up to run a losing campaing? Where did Brookins’ campaign? Did you see any TV ads? Radio ads? Anything other than those goofy emails showing him standing on a CTA Train platform looking for loose change? It was a sham yah’ll—but Ima didn’t want to burst yah’ll’s bubble before election day. Now that it’s over, you think Brookins going to Hawaii or Miami with the money?

Tillman, who supposedly ran around the ward endorsing Dunkin, is the new kiss of death on the Black political scene. It’s a shame too—because Tillman used to be the man, I mean woman, in terms of Black agitation politics in the town. Then she went up on that 5th floor and kissed that ring and that was the end of her. But back to Dunkin and Dowell, which sounds like a good name for a law firm: These two cozy politicos should kiss and make up

Annazette Collins (10th - District) addressed students on Saturday, January 26, from Austin, Bronzeville and Humboldt Park at the sevenmonth Exelon Stay in School Mentoring Workshops. Adler, ComEd challenge students to Shoot for the Moon with essay contest

Eighth-graders learn about careers in space exploration, enter for chance to win a trip to Space Camp and other prizes.

ComEd and the Adler Planetarium recently announced the second annual Shoot for the Moon essay contest to expose eighth-graders to space exploration careers. The winner will receive a week-long trip to Space Camp in Alabama. ComEd sponsors the Adler’s permanent exhibition, Shoot for the Moon, which features the Gemini 12 spacecraft and tells the thrilling stories of American space exploration. As an extension of the sponsorship, ComEd is encouraging eighth grade students throughout its service territory to consider the variety of jobs it takes to complete a space mission, and draft a 200word essay about how their lessons in science classes and everyday life would help them with a career in space exploration. The writers strike should end on a positive note very soon so that the 2008 ACADEMY AWARDS can proceed to choose the best in each film category. One of the best film nominations includes NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN a critically acclaimed, award winning 2007 film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy. Written and directed by JOEL and ETHAN COEN the film features TOMMY LEE JONES, JOSH BROLIN, and JAVIER BARDEN. Faithfully adapted from the well-received novel, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN draws heavily on McCarthy’s themes of chance and fate. It tells the story of a drug deal gone very wrong and the ensuing cat-and-mouse drama as three men crisscross each other’s paths in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas. Chicago Music Association (CMA) Branch No. 1 of NANM (National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc.) will present its 10th annual Dr. Theodore Charles Stone Black Heritage Concert Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 4:00 pm in the Paul Robeson Theater of South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 South Shore Drive, Chicago. The concert is presented in partnership with the Advisory Council of South Shore Cultural Center, Raymond N. Davis, President. The annual concert was begun by Dr. Stone during his 42-year tenure as president of CMA and, by tradition, features music by Black composers whose works are seldom heard in the classical music programming offered by major

cultural organizations of the city. In addition, outstanding musicians are periodically honored at

the concert for their outstanding contributions to the world of music. Past honorees include the late international baritone William Warfield; Etta Moten Barnett, mezzo-contralto; (the late) Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Howard Savage, and Dr. Lena McLin, composers; and Dr. Earl Calloway; tenor and music journalist. Guest artists for the 2008 event are nine-year-old CMA Junior Branch member, vocalist Lila Grant; the FAQtet Ensemble, also known as Connoisseur Musica, members of the string section of the Chicago Sinfonietta Orchestra; CMA member George Cooper, concert pianist; and the Classic Act Choral Ensemble, Fabienne C. Chicago Sinfonietta to join Sphinx Commissioning Consortium The Chicago Sinfonietta, the nation’s most diverse orchestra, has committed to joining the newly formed Sphinx Commissioning Consortium (SCC), a new initiative, developed by the famed Sphinx Organization, aimed to bringing more music by AfricanAmerican and Latino composers to concert halls across America. The Chicago Sinfonietta is pleased to be part of such a noble endeavor with such a talented group of organizations. “As an orchestra that has devoted itself to promoting diversity and inclusiveness in the classical music field for over 21 years, the Chicago Sinfonietta is pleased to see other orchestras and organizations join us in our efforts to get this music heard,” notes Sinfonietta Executive Director Jim Hirsch. “The work of the SCC is important and we are delighted to be a part of this nationwide effort to promote the works of composers

of color.” The Sphinx Organization, the national non-profit organization dedicated to building diversity in classical music, has announced a new initiative aimed at bringing more music by Black and Latino composers to the concert hall. Sphinx will administer the new initiative, which is called the Sphinx Commissioning Consortium (SCC), and will partner with fourteen prominent orchestras. Currently, compositions by Black and Latino composers account for less than 1% of classical music performed each year. As a group, the SCC will commission a new orchestral work from a Black or Latino composer annually. Each member orchestra will perform the commissioned piece during the concert season following its completion. Through their joint financial commitments, the SCC will have resources exceeding $70,000 each year to cover com-

missioning fees along with other costs associated with each new work. Aaron Dworkin, founder and president of the Sphinx Organization, announced the new initiative at the Sphinx Competition Finals Concert in Detroit on Sunday evening. “Sphinx is proud to partner with these leading organizations, which represent a broad cross-section of our field,” said Dworkin. “This collaboration is a truly historic undertaking.” In addition to Sphinx, the consortium includes fourteen orchestras from across the country. Chicago Children’s Choir releases new recording of freedom songs Chicago Children’s Choir (CCC) released a new recording entitled Songs on the Road to Freedom during a private celebration at the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum, 445 N. Michigan Ave. on Thursday, February 7, 2008. The selections on the recording range from well-known songs used during the American civil rights movement, to recent works commissioned by Chicago Children’s Choir, to the anti-apartheid music of South Africa, where people similarly struggled for freedom and justice. Tiger Woods and professional golf SPORTS

By George M. Williams In the relatively benign world of professional golf there has been an interesting development. It began with a stupid remark by a female co-host on the golf channel. Kelly Tilghman made a statement, while trying to engage in

Tiger Woods some hyperbole, that the only way pro-golfers could beat Tiger Woods was to “lynch him in a back alley.” The firestorm over this comment provoked the publicity seeking Rev. Al Sharpton to demand that Tilghman be fired. Woods and the PGA got Tilghman suspended for two weeks after she gave an extensive apology. To compound the problem Golf Week magazine even went as far as to place a noose on its cover. The editor who approved this dumb move was unceremoniously fired. Some felt that Woods should have been more active in his reaction to Tilghman’s idiotic remark. However this writer believes he handled it very well. He won the tour event (his first event after a long layoff ) at Torrey Pines in California decisively by eight shots. During an interview after the tournament Golf World magazine reported the following

comments. “I am socially active every day of my life,” Woods said, referring to his foundation and educational complex. “Did you see those kids here from our learning center? They were coming all week. Most of them have never been to a golf course. That means more to me than talking about that thing with Kelly, which got completely out of hand.” Woods is not oblivious to racial slights. When he went to one new school as a child in elementary grades some of his childish classmates tied him to a tree. That is something he will never forget. A number the PGA players thought he was arrogant when he first started on tour and some of the hostility of the crowds was palpable. “Can you feel it Dad? Can you feel it?” he said to his father at one event. Things changed when people started coming in out big numbers to watch him. TV ratings went way up and the “Tiger effect” has made billions for the golf industry. The Tiger Woods era, fueled by lucrative TV contracts, particularly the one negotiated after Woods’ first Masters victory, saw the first place prize money increase 510 percent. The other players on the tour have made millions because of the increase in prize money that Tiger has caused. Some relatively unknown players live quite lavishly. First time major championship winners can collect a bonus ranging from $100,000 to $1 million for their efforts. Most importantly the PGA tour players have the best retirement plan in all sports. A 25 year old player receiving $200,000 in deferred income for 15 years would, at age 52 (the age at which PGA Tour players can access their deferred income by special congressional exemption) have $9.4 mil-

lion if it grew at a very conservative rate of 6 percent. At 12 percent the total available would be more than $29 million. Gold World estimates Tiger’s total earnings at $769 million in his 12 years on the tour. In 2007 he received $23 million in prize

money. Recently Tiger reportedly received $3,000,000 in Dubai just to show up. The prize money was extra. He won the event in spectacular fashion making it a perfect record of 2 for 2 thus far in 2008. He has won the last four tournaments he entered and has

6 wins for the last 7 tournaments in which he played. Golf World estimates his total earnings at $769 million in his 12 years on the tour. Thus far he is scandal free and is on his way to becoming the first billion dollar athlete. Go Tiger!

USA Wrestling and World Sport Chicago celebrate International Sportsmanship at Second Annual Chicago Cup Wrestling Competition Showcased U.S. Men’s and Women’s Wrestling Team, Bulgaria and Poland In the spirit of international competition, USA Wrestling and World Sport Chicago wrapped up a successful second staging of the Chicago Cup, a wrestling event featuring men’s and women’s athletes from Bulgaria, Poland and the United States. The 2008 Chicago Cup featured the 2007 world champion U.S. Greco-Roman men’s team competing against a very strong team from Bulgaria. Daley. "We hope these talented athletes have a great competition and will get a chance to enjoy all the wonderful things Chicago has to offer." Chicago Cup fans were treated to a number of activities at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena prior to the competition. An autograph session included members of Team USA and past Olympic wrestlers.

Team USA coaches Steve Fraser and Terry Steiner also facilitated a youth clinic, in which members of the men’s and women’s teams demonstrated Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling techniques. “We were happy to have the opportunity to showcase our world championship squad to our Chicago fans,” said Steve Fraser, head coach of the U.S. men’s Greco-Roman team. “We’re also grateful for the opportunity to compete against this Bulgarian team, who proved to be formidable opponents.” The competition began with a parade of athletes, who entered the arena holding flags from their countries as vocalists performed each country’s national anthem.

D e L a Sa ll e B ow lin g Tea m concludes successful Season De La Salle Institute proudly announces that its bowling team recently concluded its season with its fifth consecutive appearance in the Illinois High School Association’s state finals, held this year at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon, IL.

lanes this season were seniors Alexander Garcia (Bridgeport) and Richard Kaczynski (Garfield Ridge), Cortese (McKinley Park) and sophomores Richard Barnotes (Canaryville), Mike Ginger (Berwyn) and Gary Young (Bridgeport).

The Meteors, who were coached by Ray Garcia, finished 22nd as a team with a total pinfall of 5,742. Individually, junior Matt Cortese placed 65th, averaging 200.1 over 12 games.
