Blumenberg denies rumors Calumet Township Assessor Booker Blumenberg says that reports that the states Department of Local Government Finance is taking over the duties of the assessor’s office are not true. Responding to the reports of a takeover he stated that he is not going anywhere, nor is his staff going anywhere. Blumenberg said that operation of the assessor’s office will not change and statements about the DLGF taking over are false and misleading. Blumenberg and DLGF commissioner Timothy Rushenberg have been at odds over a statistical ratio study that Rushenberg claims was done incorrectly by Blumenberg’s staff. He also said that Blumenberg failed to comply with IAAO and DLGF standards. Blumenberg said he did voluntarily complete the ratio study in compliance with the standards and any statement to the contrary is false. Rushenberg said that incorrect information from the study would result in property tax statements for Calumet Township residents arriving late. In a letter to Rushenberg, Blumenberg set out in detail his position on the issue. He stated that it is the duty of the DLGF to conduct a Ratio Study and not the Township Assessor. Blumenberg noted that state law requires the DLGF and the

County Assessor to conduct a ratio study and not township assessors. “For Mr. Rushenberg to claim he is doing Mr. Blumenberg’s job is incorrect,” wrote Blumenberg. “He is doing his own job

which is to perform a ratio study entirety (sic) of Lake County, Indiana and every county in the State.” Blumenberg said that his office did not conduct the ratio study last year or the year

before that or in any year. He said his office has not conducted a general reassessment since 1995 due to a change in the law to grant huge tax breaks for U.S. Steel. (Continued on page 2)

NAACP holds forum to address city’s home invasion problems By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray The need to address the increasing number of home invasions throughout Northwest Indiana’s communities has caught the attention of the local branch NAACP to address the situation. Recently the NAACP and several members of the Gary Police Department held a forum with concerned citizens to discuss how to make communities a safer place. Several residents in attendance shared their stories of how they have been victims of home invasions and robberies throughout their communities and the increasing rash of crimes continually being reported unsolved. Members of the Gary Police Department Commander Mallot and Officers Trevino and Hammady told the audience they believe it is the same people committing the

burglaries and not just in Gary, but throughout the Northwest Indiana communities. One resident said she believes it is the same group of young men as well burglarizing the Griffith area. She said, “These young men are good at what they do. It’s like they are making robbing Northwest Indiana their jobs.” Commander Mallot responded, “It’s our job to get them caught.” Another family attending the forum told how the door to their home was kicked in while family members were at work. One member of the family said, “My neighbor told me a young man (was noticed) casing my house so he questioned him as to what he was doing. He told him he came by to give an estimate, which was a lie.” NAACP President Attorney Karen Pul(Continued on page 3)

New award honors Civic Rights Advocate from Gary VALPARAISO – A longtime civil rights advocate in Northwest Indiana was honored during Valparaiso University’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration as the first recipient of a new award honoring an individual whose contributions to racial equality and social justice have had a longterm positive impact throughout the region. Hilbert L. Bradley, a Gary attorney who recently retired after 60 years of legal practice, is the inaugural recipient of the University’s Andrew Schulze Award and was honored during MLK Day celebrations taking place January 18 on campus. The award was presented during a convocation in the Chapel of the Resurrection. The new award honors the legacy of the Reverend Schulze, a white Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastor who began his ministry serving Black mission churches in Springfield, Illinois, St. Louis and Chicago. As an early proponent of integration, he lived in the communities he served, fought to get Black students admitted to Lutheran schools, and in 1953, founded the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America (LHRAA), an influential group in the area of Lutheran race relations that was based at Valpo until 1980. In 1962, Reverend Schulze was one of several Northern white clergymen arrested in Albany, Ga., for participating in civilrights demonstrations. Throughout his life, Andrew Schulze led

by example through speaking, writing, teaching and taking action to fight racism and promote equality for Blacks in the church and beyond. In 1947, Bradley was the first African-American student admitted to the Valparaiso University School of Law and he became its first African-American graduate in 1950. At the time he began practicing law, no African-Americans in Indiana served in state or local elected office. In Gary, large numbers of African-Americans worked as laborers in the steel mills but were barred from management jobs there, and were prohibited from working in most other Gary businesses. In 1957, Bradley founded Fair Share, a civil rights organization that worked to establish the political base for the election of Blackpolitical officials, culminating in the election of Richard Hatcher as Gary mayor in 1967, the first African American mayor of a major city. By picketing banks, grocery stores, and department stores, Fair Sharemembers pushed private industry to hire some of the region’s first African American managers. In 1963, Bradley led the Gary contingent that marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in the historic March on Washington. One of Bradley’s greatest accomplishments was his role in en-

Randolph announces legislation for the 2010 Indiana General Assembly INDIANAPOLIS—The 2010 Indiana General Assembly has convened and senators have been busy preparing legislation to be heard in committees. State Senator Lonnie M. Randolph (D-East Chicago) has authored and coauthored several bills this year. Property Tax Provisions Senate Bill (SB) 121 would require the treasurer in a county with a population between 400,000 and 700,000 people to use provisional property tax statements for taxes based on the assessment date in 2009, or an earlier year, if the county auditor fails to deliver the abstract for that assessment date to the county treasurer before March 16 of the tax payment year. Currently, a county may elect to send out provisional tax statements to its taxpayers if the county abstract is not complete by March 16. If passed, the bill would retroactively take effect as of January 1, 2009. SB 333 would eliminate the law that freezes the maximum prop2

erty tax levies for civil taxing units in Lake County, unless a local option income tax for property tax relief is in effect in the county. Under current law, civil taxing units in Lake County cannot increase property tax levies for funds that are subject to the maximum levy limitation because the county has not adopted a local option income tax. Under this bill, beginning with taxes payable in 2011, civil unit levy limits would grow by the statewide levy growth factor. Qualifications for judges of city and town courts Randolph authored SB 122, which would require the judge of a city or town court to be an attorney in good standing admitted to the practice of law in Indiana. Under the bill, judges serving on or after June 30 who are not an attorney in good standing would be allowed to continue to serve only for the remainder of their term. Of the 75 city and town courts in 2008, 44 courts had judges who were not attorneys.

Texting While Driving SB 18 would make it illegal to transmit a text message or electronic mail message while operating a motor vehicle. The bill also expands the definition of “telecommunications device” to include a wireless telephone, personal digital assistant, pager and/or text messaging device. White House accepts Bayh recommendations to fill three federal court vacancies; Indiana’s first African-American federal judge is nominated INDIANAPOLIS – Senator Evan Bayh recently announced the nomination of three Hoosiers for lifetime appointments to the federal bench, breaking a major judicial barrier in Indiana on the Martin Luther King, Jr., federal holiday. At a press conference at the Birch Bayh Federal Building where he once served as a law clerk, Bayh announced that the White House had accepted his recommendation to submit for Senate approval three “outstanding, mainstream Hoosiers” to be-

Blumenberg denies rumors (Continued from page 1) Blumenberg asserts that Rushenberg and Governor Mitch Daniels both seek to discredit him and his staff because of his continued criticism of the Daniels Administration granting huge tax breaks to U.S. Steel and other steel mills and the oil refineries.

Blumenberg believes that a recent referendum aimed at eliminating the office of township assessor was meant to target him because of his stance against the steel and oil giants in the area. Blumenberg was one of eight township assessors to survive the referendum.

The nominees are Tanya Walton Pratt and Jane Magnus-Stinson for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and Jon DeGuilio for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. President Barack Obama will formally nominate each when the Senate reconvenes this week after its winter recess. “Today, we take a historic step in creating a more diverse federal judiciary in our state,” Bayh said. “These highly qualified individuals have impeccable records and rich backgrounds that will help move us closer to our goal of realizing equal justice under law.” (Continued on page 9)

EDITORIAL HAITI ANDTHE "H" WORD Once again, the eyes of the world are on a great tragedy that is unfolding and that involves mostly Black people. Haiti, considered one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, recently experienced a devastating earthquake that has taken many, many lives, with the count ranging from 150,000 to beyond 200,000, depending upon the source. The tragedy dwarfs the hurricane Katrina catastrophe by a great magnitude, and has been called the worst one to visit the western hemisphere. It is heartwarming to see the support and good will that is pouring in from all over the world. It is equally frustrating to see the hatred and shortsightedness demonstrated by a few very vocal, but widely influential bigmouths. Two cases in point are the loudmouthed, perennially agitated host of a WLS radio program that caters to the right wing, Rush Limbaugh, and the socalled "Christian" minister, Pat Robertson. Right after the Haitian tragedy struck, Limbaugh was quick to castigate President Barack Obama for responding so quickly and asking people to send aid to the beleaguered nation. He attributed Obama's actions to being motivated by a "political opportunity" to gain favor in the eyes of the public. Moreover, and incredibly, Limbaugh allegedly encouraged people to not send money to help the earthquake victims because Americans had "already paid their taxes." Rush Limbaugh is known for his insensitivity and bigotry, but he has plummeted to a new low in this regard. He compared Obama's third-day reaction to the would-be Christmas day bombing with the quick response to Haiti. For the record, no one was ultimately killed as a result of the bombing attempt, but thousands have lost their lives in Haiti, so how can Rush compare the two as equal, unless there is something radically wrong with his logic? Objective observers can give a name to his malady - it is called hatred. Rush Limbaugh is a hater. Another person of this ilk is the right wing cleric Pat Robertson. Robertson allegedly attributed the Haitian tragedy to the notion that Haiti had sold its soul to the devil in order to be freed from slavery. How preposterous - his skewed thinking is not able to wrap itself around the fact that slavery itself, especially as practiced by America, can be seen as the devil's domain. Furthermore, Robertson actually said that the Haitian tragedy could be a "blessing in disguise." Huh? This is idiocy so pure that Robertson should climb under a rock and hide for a decade. That won't happen, however, because Robertson's brand of Christianity, which blinds him, is fuelled by the antithesis of the love that is the foundation of true Christianity - hatred. Yes, Pat Robertson is a hater, and his venomous words can have a deleterious impact on a wide swath of people. He is, if anything, an influential hater, as is Limbaugh. It is sad that the mindset represented by Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson is so prevalent in America. The hatred that these men spew is more than enough for some onlookers to conclude that they have made pacts with the devil, and it is not inconceivable to think that some day in the future we might look back and realize that they were instrumental in the destabilization of America and the demise of decency. Let's hope that more reasonable souls prevail so that the Limbaughs and Robertsons of the world are outnumbered and neutralized, and that the aforementioned scenario does not play out! 4

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Indiana Chamber comments on proposed guns in workplace legislation Dear Editor As you’re well aware, guns in the workplace lead to tragic consequences and make the local news and front page all too frequently. Despite that reality, the Indiana General Assembly is again seriously considering legislation that would make it legal for employees to bring guns to work (technically, the legislation prevents employers from having a policy that bans the weapons from workplace property).

member companies employing some 800,000 workers, is greatly concerned by this legislation. We have sent each legislator a letter that details our concerns and outlines some of the horrible tragedies that have occurred, as well as testified in opposition to the current bills – and will continue to do so! Proponents of these bills emphasize an individual’s right to bear arms, but property owners certainly have the right –- and obligation – to provide a safe workplace for their employees. The consequences can become violent, often deadly, when guns and the workplace mix. Not to mention, an October 2009 study by University of Pennsylvania researchers shows that people in possession of a firearm are almost 4.5 times more likely to be shot in an assault than people who are not in possession of a firearm.

This marks the third straight year that such a bill has been introduced. THANKS KATIE The other day I happened to be watching C-Span and there was a panel discussion on the history of the King Holiday. Among the panelist was Congressman John Conyers one of the original authors of the MLK Holiday bill, and for the first time since the establishment of the holiday, Katie Hall was given credit for her role in getting the bill passed. Given Hall’s role getting the national holiday established, Nosey has always been surprised that she hadn’t been invited to speak at some of the celebrations taking place around the country. Nosey thought surely Coretta Scott King, knowing of Hall’s involvement in getting the bill passed, would have invited her to at least one of the celebrations that take place in Atlanta. Due to the numerous sales that take place on the King Holiday and the money that the stores rack in, seems some of the stores around here would invite Hall to take advantage of the sales and give her a discount on the discounts. Well even though these things haven’t happened Nosey takes pride in knowing that someone from right here in the city of Gary helped to make national history. Thanks Katie. - Nosey YOU’RE ANOTHER ONE Congressman Pete Visclosky has been encountering some hostile constituents at a number of his community forums recently. Issues like health care and the economy has raised the ire of many of his constituents causing them to call him a coward and to refer to President Obama as a Communist. This is clearly a departure from the norm from his usual meetings. In the past the congressman was able to give his spiel and the audience bought into it. Not anymore. Fuelled by the rhetoric of an emboldened right wing these people have no problem with new in your face politics. No doubt that’s why at one of the forums Visclosky was confronted by a man who had no problem with calling the conThe Gary Crusader

gressman a coward and then referring to President Obama as a Communist. Thanks to the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Riely and Glen Beck and Congressman Joe Wilson civil discourse has been thrown aside and vocal in your face protest is the order of the day. Can’t help but wonder if there is a tinge of racism involved in this new wave of protest. As bad as George Bush and Dick Cheney were, Bush never was disrespected during any speeches, surely not the state of the union the way Obama has been disrespected. Seems because that because a person of color occupies the White House it’s anything goes. Of course there should be noted that there have been some slip ups at the White House. The Secret Service and the White House Social Secretary appear to be lacking in their duties. Got all kind of uninvited guest showing up at White House events and getting in. Ain’t nothing wrong with launching an organized protest against the policies and position advocated by an elected representative. However, when it becomes hostile it’s time to draw the line.

Like we said he ain’t got but two years left on his term as governor, but he wants to make sure that he leaves a lasting legacy on the state. A jacked up legacy at that. Hope there are some folks in the legislature sane enough to stop him. Centier presents financial literacy programs to residents of Gary Manor Senior Housing Centier Bank recently hosted “Budgeting and Bingo” at Gary Manor Senior Housing as part of its ongoing partnership to bring financial literacy lessons to residents of the Gary community. Employees from Centier’s Gary Midtown branch hosted the program, which teaches lessons from the FDIC’s Money Smart financial literacy curriculum. Centier has an ongoing partnership with Gary Manor and visits the center

to teach financial literacy presentations every-other-month. The FDIC’s Money Smart program is used to provide financial education workshops on topics such as credit, checking accounts, lending, and budgeting. At the Gary Manor holiday event series, residents were provided information about budgeting on a limited income. Residents learned various budgeting tactics prepared especially for their financial

lifestyle. The financial lessons were incorporated with a game of bingo to keep residents engaged and to add an element of fun for the holiday season. “We really value the relationships that we have created with Gary Manor residents,” stated Dakita Jones, Gary Midtown

branch manager. “The seniors have made such an impression on my staff that employees even took a collection to purchase holiday gifts for the residents. We are grateful to be in a position where we can serve our community.” The Gary Midtown branch is

located at 1326 Broadway, in the Mid Towne Centre Shopping Plaza. For more information on financial literacy presentations available, please contact Dian Reyome, Centier Financial Literacy Coordinator, at dreyome@centier.com or 219-755-6140 x 1832.

Verlie Harris seeking to make WLTH a more viable radio station By Carmen M. Woodson-Wray WLTH station manager Verlie Harris has a job ahead of her every day. She has to start the day-to-day operations by assigning various program slots, act as station engineer, be a talk show host herself, and address the needs of other radio hosts in addition to make cof-

Verlie Harris 1370-AM WLTH Station Manager fee. In essence she says, “I’m the all around, go to person.” Harris accepted the position as station manager over six months ago eager to make one of Gary’s most listened to stations more vi-

able than ever since its 57 years of broadcasting history. No stranger to media broadcasting, Harris started in the business hosting a Hammond cable television show entitled “The Truth” with co-host Juan Andrade. Because of her gift to gab she was invited to sit in on the radio talk show of Robert Banks and Tony Walker during their morning show. That soon led to her becoming a talk show host. Harris says she loves being on the radio because she loves to talk. She said, “I don’t mind telling my business and sharing my personal life with my listening audience.” Harris said her being on the air every morning is not only her way of talking with her regular morning callers and discussing various issues, but it is helpful for those in her audience as well in more ways than one. She said, “Once a listener sent me a card thanking me for being on the air and said he misses me when I’m not on since he is blind. He said listening to me makes his day. That’s why I love radio. I enjoy (Continued on page 12)

Flight training for disabled will be offered by Purdue and Able Flight Purdue University’s Department of Aviation Technology and Able Flight, a nonprofit organization for people with physical disabilities, will offer an all-expensepaid flight training project next summer. Two to four Able Flight Scholarship recipients will live in university housing and be trained by instructors during an intensive one-month program to earn their sport pilot certificate. Able Flight will select the scholarship winners, with priority given to current and incoming Purdue students and rising seniors in Indiana high schools with physical disabilities such as spinal cord injuries, loss of limb or congenital birth defects. Current students will be able to earn course credit for the groundschool portion of the training, and other student pilots may qualify for continuing education credits. Able Flight will provide at least one specially adapted light sport airplane for the training project and will train university instructors in the plane. The Aviation Technology program at Purdue sees the collaboration with Able Flight as a unique opportunity to extend the

freedom of flight to individuals who might not be aware they can fly, said department head Brent Bowen. Purdue’s aviation program is world-class, and we need the best and brightest individuals. Able Flight will bring to us a new cadre of people who otherwise might not consider careers in aviation. Able Flight’s executive director, said, Purdue’s Department of Aviation Technology is not only one of the storied aviation programs in the country, it is an innovative leader in the training of pilots and aeronautical engineers. During their time there, our student pilots will be immersed in flying in a demanding but supportive setting and have the chance to explore opportunities for future undergraduate and graduate degrees in aviation. Interested students can download an application at the scholarship page of Able Flight’s Web site: http://www.ableflight.org. Early applicants will have the best chance for a scholarship. On-campus interviews are likely to be held as early as February, with scholarship winners named by early April. The program is expected to begin in late May or early June.

pansion team geographically in a great southern spot for the League -- and the fact that it is located in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains will offer fans additional entertainment options while taking in a Diamonds game.” “East Tennessee is known throughout the country for its support of women’s athletics through the Lady Vols and, of course, the legendary Pat Summitt. Ralph and Karen Weekly and their Lady Vols team introduced successful softball to the area and in turn, the fanbase has grown for the sport. This will be a great home for the Diamonds,” said Sarah Fekete, a former Maryville High School and University of Tennessee softball standout, who later played professionally for the Philadelphia Force, will be the general manager of the Tennessee Diamonds. Fekete, a native of Maryville, was instrumental in the tremendous 2006 Tennessee Lady Vols softball season. A Lady Vol softball center fielder, she was named a 2006 NFCA First-Team AllAmerican and led the nation in hitting with a staggering .500 (110-of-220) batting average. She was selected as the 2006 “Lady Vol Athlete of the Year” and was nominated for the SEC Female Athlete of the Year. During 2006, Fekete set a new SEC record for single-season hits (110) and completed her career as the all-time Tennessee leader in batting average, on-base percentage and stolen bases, while finishing second in all-time runs scored and hits. She went continued as a player for the NPF’s Philadelphia Force professional softball team for three seasons and in 2009 was named to ESPN’s “All-Decade Softball Team.” “Bringing professional softball to my hometown is amazing,” Fekete said. “Most people don’t realize that there are more young women playing softball in this country than there are young men who play Little League Baseball. “It’s a fantastic sport and it does great things for young athletes – having the Diamonds based here will do wonders for the sport and for local players and fans. It truly is a family-oriented, fan-based sport and a perfect fit for East Tennessee.” The Tennessee Diamonds’ franchise agreement with the National Pro Fastpitch League was finalized on Dec. 29, 2009. The team may have a permanent home in the Ripken baseball and softball complex, but will play its first season at a temporary facility in Blount County. With the franchise agreement,
